- 0:28Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho. This

- 0:45Radio Detectives, and become one of our friends on Facebook, Facebook dot com
- 0:50slash Radio Detectives. Before we do get started, there are a couple of
- 0:55things I want to just a couple housekeeping items I want to address top of
- 0:59mind. First of all, I have received feedback from many listeners about the
- 1:03new microphone. I want to assure you that I'm working on it. It's
- 1:07getting used to the new distance with this new mic and just finding the right
- 1:12way. Previous mic was broken and always malfunctioning, so it had a different
- 1:22approach. This is functional, so it'll take a while to get used to,
- 1:25and I appreciate everyone's patience. A second thing that has been happening,
- 1:30and it's happened a few times, is listeners who have raised concerns about not
- 1:38receiving access to the premium side. In some cases, I'm not hearing about
- 1:42the fact that they haven't received it for weeks or months, So I just
- 1:47want to go ahead and address this. Generally the vast majority of the time,
- 1:52if you've donated to the show and you haven't received access to the premium
- 1:56side, it's because the message containing the demium side information went to your junk
- 2:02email or somehow got caught in your spam filter. If you donated the show
- 2:08recently, it should just be a matter of checking your spam filter. If
- 2:13you don't find it in your spam or junk mail folder, or if it's
- 2:17just been you know, quite a while, and you know, usually most
- 2:21people's computers will empty their spam folder every thirty days or so, then just
- 2:25drop me a line at Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net and I will
- 2:30happily get your access to the premium site to you. Well, with that
- 2:35out of the way, it's time for us to listen to Philip Marlowe.
- 2:39The original air date was April ninth, nineteen forty nine, and the title
- 2:44is the Name to Remember the Partner from Mexico City, the Stranger Dead in
- 2:49Nevada, and the Man with a cauliflower ear all added up to a copse
- 2:53on a concrete floor. But I couldn't figure why until I found out there
- 2:57was one name above all that had to be remembered. From the pen of
- 3:01Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his most famous character in
- 3:07the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. Now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe.
- 3:21We bring you tonight's exciting story. The name to remember the big clock at
- 3:36the far end of the Beverly Room cocktail lunge with the opaque glass ice cubes
- 3:39where they should have been numbers said. It was twenty after five that met
- 3:44my new client, Eddie Malette, was late, so sitting at an uncomfortable
- 3:47mushroom for two, I waited and worked on a long drink and stared down
- 3:52into the mirrored top of my table. I stopped staring when the reflection on
- 3:54the tabletop changed from red ceiling to gray hamburg and pale blue eyes in an
- 4:00almost friendly face. I looked up to find easy going Eddie Malette looking about
- 4:04as he had been a year ago, dapper and draped flannel, carnation attached,
- 4:09had a thin smile on thinner lips. He sat down, took off
- 4:13his hat and shook handshole in one quick motion, and I knew he was
- 4:15either in trouble or hurry or both. Mallow business business. You got to
- 4:19find another who's been following me for the last couple of days. He speak
- 4:24what a muscle under a T shirt? And I kind of checking like the
- 4:26Dodgers were when I'm warming up, You know what I mean. I can't
- 4:29figure out what this print's after. It bothers me all the time. He's
- 4:31like hanging around and if I go from me, run, So what I
- 4:35want you to do is you get next to him and the answer to this
- 4:40thing here fifty seventy eighty one hundred bucks and I feel enough. You know,
- 4:45Eddie, the law might do this for you for free. Yeah,
- 4:47for John Doe they might. But Eddie Mullett's another story model. You know
- 4:50what I mean? Today I got a respectable business war surplus, But the
- 4:55cops they only remember me is a guy who once did time for being careless
- 4:58with other people's stove. I'm in a hurry. My two partners, Lou
- 5:01Trip and Ruth Dunn. She's also my girl. They're coming back to town
- 5:04tonight. I like to spend some time with both of them without interruptions.
- 5:09What do you mean, girl, Addin, you and that pretty wife I've
- 5:11heard about split up. Yeah, I'm soon for divorce right now. Tina
- 5:14and I never should have been Mallow. I need someone who's soft and more
- 5:18honest than understanding, you know what I mean. I'll take this here,
- 5:21Rook, Can I think you sir? Huh oh yeah, Scotch No,
- 5:25budg make it a double else this root model, she's different, good ahead
- 5:29for business. We can get it at the same time. Like President's the
- 5:31letter I got from it today. She and lou were both in Mexico City.
- 5:34It's got all the dope on the dealer working un plus the fact she's
- 5:38worrying about me. That should bring us right back to T shirt. Remember
- 5:41where do I start at? He that's the only place I know of Marlow.
- 5:44Yesterday I kind of tended tables on this guy. Trailed him down to
- 5:46the corner of Wilsham Western, but he got away in the middle of a
- 5:48lot of traffic, you know what I mean, and a car huh car,
- 5:51Oh no, we're both walking. No. I figured from his bill
- 5:56in a T shirt he could work on one of these health clubs around it.
- 5:59You find out them come of my place on Hoover before right, huh
- 6:01By the way he's got black curly hair, and one is all banged up
- 6:05cauliflower like it ripe. One anything else? No, ay, I'll see
- 6:10you. You know what I mean. Huh. Two hours after I'd left
- 6:20Eddie Molett, I checked with a half a dozen hooray for health clubs in
- 6:24the neighborhood, smelled a lot of liniment, and came away with nothing more
- 6:26than this tended nostrils. So at seven thirty I pointed my car so at
- 6:30eighty four hundred North Hoover, and I hope that my client could give me
- 6:32something else to go on. And my let home was well groomed and sat
- 6:36sedately behind fifty rolling yards of carefully clipped age, and said the gardener must
- 6:42have gone to Barba's college. So when I leaned against the front door bell,
- 6:45I expected any and at least a silk lapel smoking jacket with slippers to
- 6:47match. When the door swung open, I got a surprise because I was
- 6:51greeted instead by a lot of white T shirt. And in front of that,
- 6:55and coming straight from my head, was a fist the size of a
- 6:58musk melon. Okay, privately checkedive hire by Eddie Letting the Beverly room.
- 7:03Gear up, No, no, so much as smiled, crooked or out
- 7:08twist your arm and two what is it you want? One thing? I
- 7:13chanced to bust you in the nose? What nerve? Eh? Listen,
- 7:17stupid. If I had the time, I'd tie your arm into the square
- 7:20knot, then rip it off at the hinges and throw it away. Right
- 7:24now, I've that's what I came for. I'm in a hurry. So
- 7:27you're real lucky about Edie my let muscles. How lucky is he? Very?
- 7:32He's inside resting, just like you're gonna be, mister. By the
- 7:43time I got back to my feet and had my right arm unscrewed the where
- 7:45I could reach across my chest and my shoulder holster, a T shirt was
- 7:47gone. So I started into the house, but I knew was going to
- 7:53be a slightly beat up client. When I turned on the lights and found
- 7:56nothing in the kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom, I began to worry a
- 7:59little more. I got to the den and saw that the drawers of a
- 8:01desk that were turned inside out, but I still no eddy. I opened
- 8:07a side door and started out to the patio, which went along the front
- 8:09of the house. Then at the shadow report of high heels coming up the
- 8:13flagstone path that led to the front door, I stopped and waited, and
- 8:16the lady, who was a quiet face and quiet clothes, came to a
- 8:18halt in the open doorway. He possible and called lady's name out loud.
- 8:22I figured this had to be roof done, girlfriend and partner out of Mexico
- 8:26City. So I walked back through the house in the living room. Dry
- 8:30It's room, Eddie Moletta, are you playing a game with me? Like?
- 8:35Who are you? What are you doing here? And Philip Marlon was
- 8:39done. I was hired by your boyfriend because I was worried about a bunch
- 8:43of muscles and a T shirt with curly black hair, a cauliflower ear,
- 8:46and a brain you could drop through a hole in a life. Save it
- 8:48meant anything to you? No, it doesn't. But where's Eddie? Mister
- 8:52marlone? Why are the front door opened like this? And why are all
- 8:56the lights on? In that order? I don't know where it is.
- 8:58Front doors opened because that's where a T shirt and I played Ben the private
- 9:01detective, and all the lights are on because I was looking for Eddie.
- 9:05He's not here any place, the bedroom, in the kitchen, so fine,
- 9:07No, come on in here see if his desk, and then adds
- 9:11for you. Maybe draws have been slightly re arranged by a very heavy hand.
- 9:16The incidentally, T Shirt was bragging about getting what he'd come for just
- 9:18as he collapsed me for the second time. So if you the letters gone?
- 9:24What letters? The ones I wrote to Eddie while I was on the
- 9:26road. He always kept them here in the bottom drawer. Well, business
- 9:30a pleasure business mostly, but I I did talk of other things too.
- 9:35Yeah, No, Eddie mentioned that when he told me about you and Lou
- 9:39tripping you back tonight. By the way, where is trip? Well,
- 9:41I don't know. He left me in Mexico City the day before yesterday and
- 9:45said he'd be here tonight at the latest. Surely, Marlin, you don't
- 9:50think that Lou had anything to do with it. Could be letters of part
- 9:52business and part love. So I'd say that the only person who could possibly
- 9:58be behind this is missus Mullett. Yes, And for the oldest and best
- 10:03reason in the world, Marlow jealousy Tina do anything to make Eddie and me
- 10:07unhappy. She could twist the innocent wording of those letters so that any divorced
- 10:13judge would see things her way. She's cool, mallow, isn't she Under
- 10:20that door there that leads to the garage. It's blood marks, stay over
- 10:26there, roof? Oh Eddie, Eddie, are you? Oh mollowey dear?
- 10:39Isn't he Yeah? I'm afraid he is dead, real dead. The
- 10:50right side of his head crushed him. Next two women on the edge of
- 10:54the epic pool of blood that had seeked under the door was the grease coated
- 10:56tire eye under turned Ruth away. And it wasn't until we were back in
- 11:01the living room and she'd stopped sobbing long enough to take the double shot of
- 11:03brandy that I had forced down at it. I started for the telephone and
- 11:07a call at the technical tenanty bar at Homicide, but before I could pick
- 11:11up the receiver, it went off, Hell, this is LIEUTENANTI Barr at
- 11:16Police headquot Bara A great conservace be this mollo. I was just gonna call
- 11:20you. Did I your office number? By mistake? No mistake, Lieutenant,
- 11:24I mean Eddie Mleett's have been working for him since this afternoon. What's
- 11:28up? Why they call a dead man? Aimed? Ellis Clay in a
- 11:31hotel outside of Carson City in Nevada Hill. Yeah, it looks like an
- 11:33accidental explosion of his room there and the best of shriff passed for identification other
- 11:37than his name. In the city Los Angeles, there's a blank sheet of
- 11:41letter had paper from Eddie Mallett's word surplus outfit. So I thought Milett might
- 11:45be able to help us out. Is he there? Yeah? And Daddy
- 11:48Barra murdered with a tire iron sometime in the last dog mm hmm. Any
- 11:52idea who did it? A muscleman in a T shirt maybe, but at
- 11:56the moment he borrow the motive seems to be a little mixed. Say wait
- 11:58a minute, I may be able to help you on that. Nevada guy,
- 12:01Ruth both, do you know anything about a man named Clay and Coston
- 12:05City? He had Eddi's address on him when he was killed in an accident
- 12:09in Nevada? No, No, I don't know. Hello e Barra.
- 12:15The girl here who is one of Eddie's partners, never heard of him,
- 12:18all right, But that's unimportant. Now. What I am interested in is
- 12:20Mallett's death. What's he address out there? And eighty four hundred North Hoover
- 12:26nor Hoover as in vacuum cleaner. But look, if it's all the same
- 12:30to you, we bar I'd like to move, and I think if I
- 12:31do it fast enough, I've got an even chance of catching up with this
- 12:33T shirt. Okay, all right, moll, but don't forget. We've
- 12:37got a couple of thousand policemen here in LA just in case you. Yeah,
- 12:41yeah, go bye, Barra, Ruth, Ruth, honey. Why
- 12:46it will be your own place, and try to take it easy. Huh.
- 12:48When I talked to Bora again, I'll tell him where you can be
- 12:50found, all right, So, but where are you going? The only
- 12:56place today is now, Tina Malitz, you know where it is? Yeah,
- 13:00a Cameo house and Rexbert driving Beverly Hills. Also, if it helps,
- 13:05she drives a new Queen colored Nash But Marlo, be careful. Tina
- 13:11maybe the one who'll hired that man in the T shirt. Yeah, no,
- 13:13Nat, honey, is exactly what I'm banking on. I'll call you
- 13:16after I got the vital statistics and where I could reach roofs. Later on,
- 13:24I piled into my car and headed for Beverly Hills in the cameo house,
- 13:28which was six stories of white stone and glass brick. Tina Malette managed
- 13:33to scrimp five with half the top floor and a couple of minutes later,
- 13:37when I got out of the old mirror elevator, walked to her door,
- 13:39rang and waited. I was wondering what kind of a reception I'd get.
- 13:43When the door opened, I stopped wondering and started concentrating. You you want
- 13:48something in something? The texture spun smoke. It stood five feet six inches
- 14:03over the threshold and must have weighed in it close to one hundred and twenty,
- 14:07with every inch a thing of beauty, and every palm just in the
- 14:11right place. I asked you if you wanted something, do you? Yeah?
- 14:18Oh? I mean the name's Philip Marlow, Missus Milette. I'm a
- 14:20private detective your husband hired this afternoon. Why don't you let me in like
- 14:24a good little girl, because that's something I'm not I get out of here
- 14:28before I call the police, probably on my way up here right now.
- 14:31Oh, your husband's dead. Missus Maletty was murdered, Eddie murdered. Yeah,
- 14:39how do you still mind if I come in? No? Of course,
- 14:43Now I don't know what to say. Oh, that's a right line.
- 14:48What was that? I said? You're acting and doing a bum job
- 14:50of it. I ought to slap your face. I'll call your boy with
- 14:52the muscles and have him go back to work on my arm for a while.
- 14:54What are you talking about? I let in a white T shirt who
- 14:56killed Eddie and then stole a bunch of letters that were going to help you
- 15:00lie your way through a counter suit for divorce would leave Eddie both broke and
- 15:03embarrassed. Here, don't make sense, bright buy Oh, first of all,
- 15:07I don't know who you're talking about. And second, if I were
- 15:09going to file such a countersuit, why would I want my husband killed?
- 15:11First? Maybe you didn't. We all make mistakes, Missus Millett, which
- 15:15is only one man's opinion. So why don't I just pick up my coat?
- 15:18Here? And that's the perfect gentleman has called me to the nearest police
- 15:22station. All right, it's a date. I see you bowl quite a
- 15:26bit, Tina, good enough to win that cup there from the Maplewood Alley's
- 15:28on Wilshire. There western Eddie figured a health club and I went right along.
- 15:33Never thought about the bowling Alley near there, and I you, Oh,
- 15:37yes, Marlow, you were saying something. Ay, yes, I
- 15:41was, But the little gun in your hand made me lose my place.
- 15:43Marlow. I don't believe that Eddie's dead, now do I believe that you
- 15:46work for him at all? For my money, you're just a not so
- 15:50smart boy who was hired by that Hussie Ruth's Dunn. She's going to need
- 15:54an army of private detectives before I get through. And I mean that.
- 15:58I'll back up through those doors and get out on the fire escape while you
- 16:00do what. Well, I find out exactly what's going on. I got
- 16:04out there. It's six long floors to the ground, Marlow, and I
- 16:08hope for the first step you'd take that your trip, fall all the way
- 16:11and break your neck. Goodbye, Private Detective. In just a moment,
- 16:29we will return to the second act of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. But
- 16:32first, just a little later on CBS tonight, you'll hear sing it Again's
- 16:36Master of Ceremonies, Dan Seymour, giving a perfect characterization of a man going
- 16:41crazy. The reason well, Dan's got the biggest hottest news in the history
- 16:45of quiz shows. Ready for announcement right after someone knocks off tonight's twenty five
- 16:49hundred dollars Phantom Boys mystery. So be sure to hear sing it again tonight
- 16:55when it comes to you at ten o'clock Eastern Time on most of these same
- 16:57CBS stations. And now with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the
- 17:03second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story The Name to Remember. When Tina
- 17:18Millett prodded me out under the fire escape through a pair of French doors,
- 17:21slammed them shut and snapped the lock. There was a cold look in her
- 17:25smoky eyes, and then wavering potential about the snubnosed gun clenched in her hand
- 17:29and pointed straight to my belt buckle. It melted all the gambler out of
- 17:32meat fast, So I watched quietly as she backed across the room the hall
- 17:36door and out. I knew my chances of climbing down six flights of iron
- 17:40fire escape in time to head her off was an idiot's dream, So I
- 17:44just kicked a panel out of one of the doors, reached through and finally
- 17:47got it down locked, and I went back inside of the phone. Vixen
- 17:52was on the prowl with a gun in her fist. I figured the least
- 17:53I could do was passed the word along Ruth. This is small old Oh
- 18:00Phil, have you found the letter? Not? Che had? But never
- 18:03mind that. Now you got something more important to worry about, because your
- 18:06guests on Eddie's ex wife Tina was right on the button. You mean she's
- 18:08the one who's really after the letter. Yeah? Yeah. That muscle man
- 18:11in a T shirt is just doing a heavy work for her, and I've
- 18:15got a good idea that he's connected with a maplewood bowling alley on Wilshire where
- 18:18you know, Phil and Tina's apartment alone. I just lost a small debate
- 18:22with her, and get this root, she hates you, and she's the
- 18:25type who hates hard. When she left here, she had a gun and
- 18:26the chances of at least fifty to fifty that she's coming your way, So
- 18:30keep your doors locked and stay away from windows, savvy. Yeah, oh,
- 18:33oh, one more thing before I she have off? Has my lett's
- 18:36partner a little trip shown yet? No least she hasn't called. But where
- 18:40are you going? Fill that bowling alley on Wilshire? Only this time I'm
- 18:44swinging first. Maplewood was a small and dusky combination six lane bowling alley,
- 18:53restaurant, bar, in magazine stand and cigar str all, slightly down at
- 18:57the heel and more than hungry for the business. Only two alleys were in
- 19:00use. In A lanky postgraduate delinquent with a mouthful of gum and a complexion
- 19:06one tone greener than his eye shade was the only houseman in sight. He
- 19:10looked up and watched me as I moved over to the bulletin board, where
- 19:11a bank of photographs were tacked up picturing the champions of the local league.
- 19:18Sure enough, they are in the top row and holding a bowling ball.
- 19:21That had more expression than his face was the pile of muscles and a T
- 19:25shirt which the caption tagged as one Sid Sawyer. So I walked over to
- 19:29the counter where the houseman sat and made like a one man fan club.
- 19:33What's your problem? Mac? I see Sid's up there with the champs.
- 19:40Is he around tonight? I wouldn't know. Why can I get in touch
- 19:45with him? I wouldn't have the faintest idea Mac he works here, doesn't
- 19:48he? Yeah? Off and on, but you don't know where he lives
- 19:52or what his phone number is. Eh, well, you're just beginning to
- 19:56get the id to take your hands off. You get the idea and get
- 20:00it fast, unless you want your teeth crammed down your throat. But that's
- 20:03how I live. And I'll wait a minute, mister, take it easy.
- 20:07I'll tell you he's got a room over on Shadow Street sixty three forty
- 20:15upstairs. You don't have no phone? All right? That's better? Is
- 20:18he? Then? Huh? I think so? But gee, I don't
- 20:21know why everybody is so interested in Sid Sawyer all of a sudden, who
- 20:25else is interested? Some babe called a couple of minutes ago an old friend.
- 20:29She said, that's the reason I give you the stall. Honest.
- 20:32You see, Sid don't like to be interrupted when he's entertaining an old friend.
- 20:36Is that so? Well, this is one party that's going to get
- 20:38crowded, whether he likes it or not. Sixty three forty Shadow Street was
- 20:45a top heavy tail gingerbread house left over from the days when Los Angeles was
- 20:49a stopover between Spanish missions. I got out of my car and started across
- 20:53the street toward the door. When I saw a Tinamalet's cream colored sedan sticking
- 20:56out through a tangle of overgrown brush in the driveway, which meant I was
- 21:00still in time for the big renion. So I went inside and up the
- 21:03steps of Sawyer's door. There's a light on and movement from no voices.
- 21:08I stuck my gun out of its holster, knocked lightly and stepped back,
- 21:11and the knob turned slowly and the dog cracked open. I kicked time.
- 21:17I don't move muscles. I'm returning your visit. Where's Tina? Oh,
- 21:21Tina? Look cars outside in the driveway. She's here after the letters,
- 21:25isn't she? What letters here? Nuts? I don't know what you're talking
- 21:27about it in these suitcases, you wouldn't be skipping town, would you listen?
- 21:30Shy miss? Your backing up the wrong tree. I don't know anything.
- 21:33Get me eh okay, Sawyer. If you insist, we'll do it
- 21:37the hard way. That squareses for that arm twisting job you gave me.
- 21:40Now I was taught all over again. Even get up, Come on,
- 21:42hud gun, I don't enjoy doing it. So the fast you talk the
- 21:45center, I'll stop. Where's Tina? I don't know what you do?
- 21:49And make it straight. I haven't got all night right, all right?
- 21:52No more, it's better. She came and picked up the letters, and
- 21:57she left again. I minute before you got here, five minutes you're lyon.
- 22:02Take a look out that window and tell me why your car is still
- 22:03outside. I don't know what where in the driveway next door? Holy smoke,
- 22:12it's gone all right, Sawyer. That means I can spare thirty seconds
- 22:15for the rest of the story, So make it fast. She told you
- 22:18little Letty Malett is dead. That's why you're blowing town, isn't. I'll
- 22:22wait a minute, Morrow kill him. I'll just knock him down, sure,
- 22:25on a concrete floor with a tire iron. No, I got it.
- 22:27It was Ladys. You got were written by Ruth? Done? Was
- 22:30Tina heading for Ruth once she left here? I don't know. Come on,
- 22:33sorry, I'm running out of time. Won't do any good to try
- 22:34to protect Tina. Now we'll see about that model. Why you op Tina
- 22:45was worth a broken jaw. Good night, muscles. It's a very close
- 22:52look at Sawyer to be sure he was down for the long count. And
- 22:55I stepped out the door and into a whispering circle of white eyed neighbors.
- 22:56Would hurt the fight, and I'd already called the police. I flashed my
- 23:00identification it should have battle order the three Huskies ones, and then ran down
- 23:03the stairs to my car. I made it from Shadow Street to roots Bonglow
- 23:06on Normaldy in something under five minutes, but still not fast enough, because
- 23:10when my ground was stop in front of the place, I saw that same
- 23:11clean colored sedan already there, close to a side door. I built up
- 23:17the walk and was half way to the house when I heard her lady's sick.
- 23:22Went up to a front window where the only light was burning, and
- 23:23looked in a room had been torn up. In the middle of it all
- 23:26face down on the tangled cappet was Tina Malette, and it was Ruth who
- 23:33was slumped in a chair, her face buried in her arms and sobbing hysterically.
- 23:36And still dangling from my hand was Tina snubnosed revolver. She looked up
- 23:40as I walked in. I killed her. I know, I know,
- 23:48come on, baby, take it easy, It's gonna be all right.
- 23:49She had this gun, she was crazy, was gonna killed me. I
- 23:56don't know what happened. I struggled with her and then I I realized I
- 24:00had to gut in my head. I shot her. I didn't even think.
- 24:06I just pulled it through, Honey, she did. Phil. Yeah,
- 24:12come on, Ruth, leave it alone, so I try to get
- 24:15hold of yourself. She brought the letters back there on the desk. She
- 24:19said that they didn't matter anymore, that she was mixed up in Eddie's murder
- 24:22and there was nothing left for her but to run. That she took the
- 24:26gun out of her person, said I drew in her whole life. Believe
- 24:30she was going to be sure I got what was coming to me before she
- 24:32left. That's when it happened. I was so scared, I went out
- 24:36of my head. I guess we better call it Bara. Honey. I
- 24:40think we can explain it all now, except except one thing. Ruth.
- 24:44Do you remember that guy Bara called us about the one I was killed in
- 24:47Nevada? Ellis Clay. Yeah, Yeah, that's it, Clay. I
- 24:55had the feeling all night that some way his death is tied up with all
- 24:59this. It's only a but something seems to be missing. What is it
- 25:03to what's missing? I don't know yet. Look, Honey, I want
- 25:07to take a look at these letters. You go call the police. We
- 25:10did. It was a long shot. While Ruth went down the hall to
- 25:15phone the police, I flipped through the bundle of arvelopes that had caused all
- 25:18the trouble, and a long shot began to pay off. I could hear
- 25:23Ruth talking to a desk sodynt as I picked Cap teena's revolver. I broke
- 25:26it open with Then a pair of headlights in a red spot of a police
- 25:29car flashed in the driveway, and I knew that he Borrow had figured out
- 25:32a few things for himself. I put the gun down on the table again,
- 25:34told Ruth to forget a call, and when the lieutenant came in,
- 25:37Ruth and I together explained everything that had happened right up to TENA Millett's body
- 25:41on the floor. Well, it's quite a mess, isn't it. Anyway,
- 25:45this part of it looks like a clear case of self defense, right,
- 25:48Marlon, exactly righty Borrow, It looks like self defense, Only there's
- 25:52something missing, something missing? What do you mean, Marla? At least
- 25:55three letters and that packet there, I think they're the last ones you wrote
- 25:57to Ddy. Ruth had gone, oh that's stranger. I don't understand.
- 26:02And another missing at him is Lou Trip, Eddie's partner. He didn't show
- 26:06up tonight because I think he's Nevada dead under the name of Clay. Marlow,
- 26:11you mean that Lou and that that Clay were really the same man.
- 26:15What are you getting out with all his theory, Marlo? You'll see bora
- 26:18Lou Trip was double crossing Eddie Mallette. Lou went to Mexico with Ruth here
- 26:22only he left early and flew in Nevada to close a big deal under the
- 26:23name of Clay. Meanwhile, some letters were written from Mexico to preserve the
- 26:29illusion that Lou Trip was still there. Understand what I mean, Ruth,
- 26:33Yes, I I think so. And then the unexpected happened. Lou,
- 26:37identified as Clay died accidentally in Nevada. That meant that sooner or later those
- 26:41letters would be exposed as lies, right rue, Marlow. That come of
- 26:45the tape of Watch too late, Lieutenant, I don't Moven't got a chance,
- 26:51Baby, Stay back, please, Bill. I don't want to kill
- 26:53you, but I will if you come one step closer. Stay back,
- 26:56Marlo. She means it, love Baby, It licked. Marlow was a
- 27:00good try you lost, stay back? Why not go out? Oh what
- 27:08difference doesn't make? No wow Malla when she cracks. She really went to
- 27:26pieces and told the whole story. Eh, and she and a little trip
- 27:30were working together all right when he died in the bottle of the light.
- 27:33She told him those letters put her in a tight jam with Eddie. See,
- 27:36so when she found Eddie unconscious in his garage, she finished him.
- 27:37But when she went for the letters, sid Sawyer scatter off is that it
- 27:42incidentally the state is going to give Sawyer a long vacation and one of that
- 27:45better institutions. What happened down at Sawyer's placy bar and her roof had a
- 27:51lot of nerve model. Yeah, she found Tina Milett's card Sawyer's, so
- 27:53she waited in the back seat until Tina came out with the letters. Then
- 27:57she sapped and drove the car to a house and fake that slick self defense
- 28:02setup. And she still doesn't know where she made the mistake that caught her.
- 28:06Where was it? Phil? Well? She was being real kg Bora.
- 28:08She decided it was too dangerous to write the name Clay down any place,
- 28:11so she made it a name to remember and she did that, so
- 28:15well, what do you mean, phil When I asked her for it,
- 28:18the first name Ellis popped out too. There was no legitimate way for her
- 28:22to know that. You gave me the full name over the phone, but
- 28:25I only gave her Clay. That was an opening, But I needed proof,
- 28:30so you needled her until she made a break. Then you walked into
- 28:33the gun she'd grabbed. You take some long chances, phil Oh, I'll
- 28:40do anything to see justice. Prevailely Bara, I smell a rat. You
- 28:44should I emptied the gun when she was phony. Good night till good morning,
- 28:49Evara. When I left police headquarters and walked my car, first gray
- 29:10streaks of a new day were breaking in the east. Should have given me
- 29:15a lift, but it didn't. And now it was time for me to
- 29:18go home and go to bed. But instead I sat in my car with
- 29:22the door open and smoked a cigarette while I watched the don come up.
- 29:26I couldn't help thinking what an odd trick nature plays on some of the most
- 29:33beautiful creatures, how most deadly. For instance, Ruth, how soft and
- 29:40sweet and lovely she was, Now hard she could swing a tire iron Adventures

- 31:41Broadcasting Systems Welcome back. I love the tontles of the Philip Marlow. They're
- 31:59so uh They just have such a way of grabbing your attention. You listen
- 32:02to a show like the Old Acquaintance or a Friend from Detroit, or a
- 32:07Name the Name to Remember, and it's just really has you anticipating a good
- 32:15story. We also, once again in this episode, do the Philip Marlow
- 32:20taking his hard boiled revenge on those who would go after him, And as
- 32:28we've talked about, that's one of the signatures of the hard boiled private eye.
- 32:32You don't get to just knock him silly without him settling the score.
- 32:38I also appreciated Lieutenant Ebara giving a little bit of pushback to Marlow's taking over
- 32:45police business, which is a good change compared to where Ebara seemed to be
- 32:51actively encouraging it. Leader earlier in the season. Well, that will do
- 32:55it for now. We will be back tomorrow with Nick Carter and coming back
