- 0:14Jesse here and Travis. We are we're amateurs.
- 0:19We're novices first-timers noobs perhaps.
- 0:23We do people still use that. Yeah.
- 0:25Okay. Anyway, our audio quality isn't
- 0:28the best in episodes -1 and up. Good one, because we are still
- 0:32learning things, we sorted out a lot of those issues recording
- 0:36episode 2. So we just wanted everybody to
- 0:38know that the audio quality does get better.
- 0:40So if this absolutely greats your nerves on the first couple
- 0:44of episodes, you listen to Just know that we sort some stuff
- 0:47out. Please don't assume that it's
- 0:49going to be like this the whole time.
- 0:51Yeah, this right here is give us much more representative of what
- 0:53it's going to be like going forward.
- 0:54Yes. And it potentially will get even
- 0:57better as we learn more things. So just stick it out with this
- 1:00guy's. All right, thank you.
- 1:02We're at least favorite podcast. Hi, welcome to what's your least
- 1:09favorite scary movie. The podcast where we talk about
- 1:11our least favorite aspects and most obtainable opinions of our
- 1:14most favorite scary movies. My name is Jessie and my name is
- 1:17Travis and today I'm going to be explaining why Friday the 13th.
- 1:22The original is a classic and not only is it a good / removing
- 1:27but it deserves the respect that it has within the or community
- 1:30and it should be Diaries rights, especially by some people who
- 1:34happen to be right here to my son.
- 1:37AKA Travis is gatekeeping the horror genre, I got a runny nose
- 1:46right now, so yeah, it's a, it's winter, it's snowing.
- 1:50It was 60 degrees earlier this week.
- 1:53It's just kind of it's all kinds of crazy cats and I'm allergic
- 1:56to guess, right? That's neither here nor there
- 2:01anyway. Yeah, Friday the 13th.
- 2:03Okay, so the original released back in 1980 directed by Sean
- 2:09Cunningham and it was written by Victor Miller grab.
- 2:13But most importantly because I mean we all know and we all love
- 2:17them. It was featuring effects on
- 2:20savini Tom savini exactly and everybody knows who he is,
- 2:25everybody should know. He's part of one of the reasons
- 2:27why this movie is so good. It but also music by Harry
- 2:32manfredini who also brings a great squirt of the Smoothie.
- 2:36Yes, I learned that. He spent a long time in the
- 2:39hospital after the release of this movie, did it?
- 2:43Yes. He suffered a back injury, from
- 2:46carrying this whole movie. That you're seriously, is that
- 2:50what was that something in extras, that didn't cash.
- 2:54Okay, but yes, so this movie stars Adrian, King, as Alice.
- 2:59The final girl and also Betsy Palmer as Miss 40s.
- 3:04Who is the villain in this movie.
- 3:07It's not Jason. As you know, some people are
- 3:09probably disappointed, but, you know, a lot of people seem to
- 3:13misremember, you know, very, very famous moment in the first
- 3:17screen movie, where he asks, who's the killer in front of the
- 3:2113th? It's just Jason, Jason Jason, I
- 3:23saw that movie 20 goddamn times and I feel like that's a lot of
- 3:27people when they talk about this movie.
- 3:29But for you to take Jason, I mean the fridge has is Jason but
- 3:35you know, it starts with her, it's fine, she Palmer's of
- 3:40delight, she doesn't everything. We saw behind the scenes, she's
- 3:43just didn't seem super interested in having.
- 3:47I wouldn't seem super interested is an old lady, but she was
- 3:49really cute and just she wore for a little, a sweater sets to
- 3:53the con like she showed up took on.
- 3:56That's true. Okay.
- 3:58Okay, maybe at my standards are lower for old people being
- 4:02delightful. I think, okay, we'll call that a
- 4:06personal issue. Yeah, it's fine.
- 4:09So any also worth mentioning, I think this movie feature is
- 4:12Kevin Bacon. It's not his first movie like I
- 4:16originally thought, but it was four years before Phil loose, so
- 4:19it was before he got, was some feet.
- 4:22Yeah, it was, it was practicing kicking off his Sunday shoes
- 4:25because you He was doing and what's not in mood?
- 4:31Yeah, he was not going to his nose.
- 4:33He was knocking his Sunday shoes.
- 4:37Okay. So, surprisingly, Friday 13th,
- 4:42did not get good. Reception, from critics, at
- 4:45least from what I saw. I don't, I saw a couple of
- 4:48reviews from back in the day. I'm not sure if this was a mixed
- 4:51from my current reviews or dinner.
- 4:53Also, featuring old ones. I did see one but Yeah, I feel
- 4:58like this thing has kind of been carried by the audience.
- 5:03The reason why it's still a franchise to this day kind of
- 5:06feel like that's kind of true with a lot of horror movies.
- 5:09Yeah, it tends to be overlooked a lot by critics.
- 5:12I mean, we're going through a bit of a hoarder Renaissance,
- 5:14but we saw even God telling Colette was robbed.
- 5:19Well, we're off the thread is Harry.
- 5:20So I mean we still see some of these, you know, controversial
- 5:24critic opinions and it's just, it's So weird genre, that's why
- 5:28we're all here to talk about it together because, yeah, Nobody
- 5:32Does it. And it's not a phase Mom.
- 5:34This is who I am. You just don't understand.
- 5:37But I feel like it wasn't exactly respected back in the
- 5:39day, especially in the 80s. I mean, there was some good
- 5:42horror movie say, you know. Okay, sure.
- 5:45Yeah, but this wasn't one of them.
- 5:50So I'm going to go ahead and for those, this is our first
- 5:55episode. So, yes, we give our Can't tell
- 5:58from us. Finding our feet in here.
- 6:00We are not feeding footing, finding our footing fierros.
- 6:05Alright. Yeah.
- 6:05Our feet are very much tight maybe.
- 6:07Yeah. Our Sunday shoes are on their
- 6:09size too small and they're glued to the ground.
- 6:13But yeah we're not we're not Professionals in any way shape
- 6:16or form, or just nerds talking about this stuff.
- 6:19And hopefully as you listen along with us over the coming
- 6:22weeks, we will get a little bit better with this but one of the
- 6:25things we planned to do each week is You're going to give our
- 6:28personal ratings before our discussions and then our ratings
- 6:32after the discussions, to see if I we have suede each other's
- 6:35minds at all. Yes, is Wilson versus Wilson
- 6:39right here and it's knock-down drag-out, and this is how we
- 6:42spend most of our Saturday nights.
- 6:43It's so welcome to our lives. If you ever wanted to be a part
- 6:47of our marriage which most people do because we're amazing,
- 6:52this is what we're doing so trap.
- 6:54Okay, how would you rate this movie after we?
- 6:57Watched it. I would rate this a 7 ounce him.
- 7:01I think it's a good movie. I think it does a lot of things
- 7:04really. Well it definitely has some
- 7:06things that hold it back, but when it excels, I feel like it
- 7:10actually really like does it? Well so so before we watch the
- 7:17movie, I was fairly certain that my memory was going to tell me 3
- 7:21out of 10 and I did not want to start off our podcast giving
- 7:24Friday the 13th of three out of 10 because I feel like I'm gonna
- 7:27See enough unpopular things as it is, but it held up better on
- 7:32re-watch than I thought it would.
- 7:36And the story was not. Don't hate me.
- 7:41The story was not as boring as I remembered it being so I
- 7:45actually ended up giving it a six out of ten that is super
- 7:48surprising to me I know as much shit as I've talked about Friday
- 7:52the 13th just part one. I love the Jason movies and I
- 7:57and don't think that I dislike Betsy Palmer.
- 7:59I just called her. A nice old lady.
- 8:01Sorry. Betsy Palmer for calling you
- 8:03old. She's just she's just truth.
- 8:04Yeah, it was accurate. I can't wait to be able to but
- 8:09like I love Jay. Then as a character and I'm just
- 8:14going to go ahead and give my hot fucking take on this movie
- 8:18right now that a lot of people say they love Friday the 13th
- 8:24part one and consider it a classic, but they're just kind
- 8:28of blowing smoke up their own asses and it's really not a
- 8:32movie that they love and they loved the rest of the franchise.
- 8:36That is Jason Voorhees. Directly related.
- 8:43And that this is only considered a classic out of nostalgia.
- 8:47Yeah, that's just fucking disrespectful.
- 8:50Okay. Okay, here's what I'll go out
- 8:55and then I got let me defend myself right right off the bat,
- 8:59a big part of the problem I have with this.
- 9:01And we're going to get to the Jason Voorhees versus mrs.
- 9:06Voorhees issue later because I have a lot of opinions on that
- 9:10and they tie in a lot more to the end of the movie.
- 9:14Hey, I think we need to talk about the end of the movie.
- 9:15Up likes. Wait, wait.
- 9:19So we don't tell each other, like, everything we're gonna
- 9:22say, before we do this right now.
- 9:24I say that like we've been doing this a long time.
- 9:26This is our first episode. All right, internet But, you
- 9:31know, we kind of gave a general idea of what points we were
- 9:34planning to discuss. So that way we would have an
- 9:36idea of what direction the discussion was going to go.
- 9:39And, you know what? Kind of CounterPoint stab ready.
- 9:42Yeah, we took notes to. Yeah, we, yeah, we have multiple
- 9:45notes of things that we were noticing while we were watching
- 9:49the movie. It was kind of weird.
- 9:51I just got out of school and I was like, I'm doing it.
- 9:53I'm doing notes all over again as follows depending on you,
- 9:58even? Yeah, yeah, I enjoy this. yeah,
- 10:02it's fun in a different way, but I'm just gonna go ahead and say
- 10:06that one of my biggest problems that I have with this movie, is
- 10:10that I just like, I just don't care about the characters.
- 10:16I just don't, they're not well written enough.
- 10:19They they are very much, they very much two-dimensional, and I
- 10:27think that works better in the later movies.
- 10:31Because, you know, the special effects get more of a chance to
- 10:36shine here. But as it is even though like
- 10:40the story, it kind of keeps moving Pace.
- 10:42It works a lot better than my memories, hold me too.
- 10:46But I just like, I just did not give a shit about you is super
- 10:50two dimensional characters. I just didn't, let's see.
- 10:55Let's see what I've got right in my notes here.
- 10:57I was like it starts off. We've got the / to 1958 and
- 11:04they're singing Jesus songs by the fire.
- 11:06And I've got a whole running list in my notes trying to
- 11:11figure out if this is a standard summer camp, if it side, where
- 11:15is Crystal Lake supposed to be? I think it's 7th New Jersey, who
- 11:19was filmed in New Jersey. It was spelled a New Jersey
- 11:20versus was he such think it said New Jersey.
- 11:23Okay. Because I am.
- 11:26My big thing was trying to figure out what kind of a campus
- 11:28is, if it's a standard summer camp, if there's like a
- 11:31religious affiliation with it because they are definitely
- 11:33singing religious songs, they were singing.
- 11:39I didn't write down. I just wrote singing hymns
- 11:41question mark because they're talking about like the river and
- 11:44Jeremiah or something. I don't know.
- 11:46Something that's not a Biblical. Okay.
- 11:48I just thought that they were just doing General like a songs.
- 11:51No. But it really it really did
- 11:53sound like they were singing that and it kind of made me
- 11:54wonder like, is this a religious camp or is it in a religious
- 11:57town is definitely in a small town?
- 11:59Yeah, because everybody seems to know that he's business, so I
- 12:03just, I had some questions right off the bat there.
- 12:06Travis as, you know, listeners is you Don't our, I spent
- 12:10several summers at Jesus Camp growing up, and I think that
- 12:14kind of gives me a whole different perspective on this
- 12:16movie because there's this whole, you know, we talked about
- 12:19in horror movies, there's morality around having sex,
- 12:22right? It's seen as this like, it's
- 12:25this big thing because, yeah, yeah, this is the kiss of death
- 12:29and horror movies and in religion.
- 12:31It's, you know, it's supposed to do it before marriage and it's
- 12:35only for procreation and there's this and that I'm regardless of
- 12:40what your beliefs are. It definitely influences how sex
- 12:45is viewed in horror movies. And a lot of times it is, it is
- 12:48seen as a really bad thing and we see that right away because
- 12:51one of the camp counselors Claudette, I just wrote quote,
- 12:57Claudette Got Deep thirst. So she takes this other camp.
- 13:01Counselor up there who he's apparently into Marianne.
- 13:08Like he's got this half-assed attempt at romance is like, no,
- 13:11baby. I've only got eyes for you and
- 13:13she's like cool panties. Drop to the ground which
- 13:15whatever. Girl, get yours, I don't care.
- 13:18You're on the clock. So that's a little bit
- 13:20unprofessional. It's kids, but it is Gap.
- 13:23So it's like, when are you on the clock?
- 13:25You off the clock. I was very I feel like it is
- 13:28late at night but and there were clearly counselors.
- 13:30Now nursing in Jesus hands. Yes.
- 13:33They're all the kids are finally getting their Jesus guitar guy
- 13:36down there. Yeah.
- 13:40And but like so we don't really get a feel for these characters
- 13:44right away other than their at camp and there's like some
- 13:47relationship drama but they're gonna bone in this attic.
- 13:50That has so many potential weapons.
- 13:55Yes. Mrs. Voorhees comes in clearly.
- 13:58Ready to kill? Because she killed dude, bro,
- 14:01right away. Yeah, and then quad has like, no
- 14:04don't kill me. And she just runs around all of
- 14:07these boxes. And there's so many things out
- 14:09there that she could use to defend herself, dude, and even
- 14:12if you're not experienced in any kind of self-defense, that
- 14:16survival Instinct kicks in, and she all she did, was she threw
- 14:20an empty box at. This is for he's would, you
- 14:23didn't know those empty could have been Dylan, I say, I don't
- 14:26look at it with anything possibilities.
- 14:29There are so many potential weapons out there and this is
- 14:33this is a great that I have in a lot of horror movies.
- 14:35I do not like it when characters make bad decisions and I'm not
- 14:40saying like they have to make perfect decisions all the time
- 14:42because I get high stress situations.
- 14:46You've got fight flight or freeze, she will not doing any
- 14:49of those, she was playing duck. Duck goose around the cardboard
- 14:53boxes in the Attic. Like I just I want, I want
- 14:57something logical happening. And this kind of goes throughout
- 15:01the whole movie for me, is that all of these characters are
- 15:05making decisions that don't seem to really fully make sense
- 15:10because we don't get a sense of what the characters are.
- 15:12Okay. Now maybe Claudette maybe she's
- 15:15weak, maybe she's got, maybe she's anemic, I don't know and
- 15:18she can't she can't feel the weapon.
- 15:20I don't know. I don't know anything about
- 15:22Claudette. All I know is that she does not
- 15:24pay attention to her surroundings.
- 15:25Things. She doesn't care that her
- 15:27boyfriends. Got another girlfriend and
- 15:30Roman. Yeah.
- 15:31Like I don't think that that was that bad.
- 15:35Okay. Like it's a horror movie.
- 15:38And I know that, you know, people always say like yeah,
- 15:42horror movie characters just stupidly.
- 15:44It's I feel like it's easy to be on the other end of things and
- 15:48be like, no, you shouldn't be doing that.
- 15:49Like wow, that's so stupid. Unless you put in that scenario,
- 15:55like you don't know how you would react.
- 15:56That's true. Like, would you grab a fucking
- 16:00box and throw it at somebody? I mean if it's there I would but
- 16:03I've done I've done self-defense stuff, I would do more than
- 16:06through the empty box that I would be doing.
- 16:08I would be doing a lot more than that, Seattle.
- 16:09Your say I want something that I know how to throw a box.
- 16:12Yes, I do. Yes, exactly.
- 16:14They do tacos. Okay.
- 16:18But yeah, it just and then I think what?
- 16:20Really? What really That me about it was
- 16:23that both of these killers are off screen.
- 16:26So I don't care about these characters, I don't know if this
- 16:29is Jesus camp or regular Camp, don't know who the Killer is.
- 16:32Don't know their motive. All I know is these people
- 16:35probably got killed and this is my biggest gripe because it's
- 16:38such a waste of Tom savini. We get to see the after effects.
- 16:41And I know that not all of the kills are off screen in this
- 16:43movie but we just met and I guess it's so easy to come at
- 16:49it. From a 2021 perspective where we
- 16:51know, Tom is Caleb. Look without a first-name basis.
- 16:54Look at this point, I'm pretty sure easily.
- 16:58Well-known, like not like as well known as he is now but like
- 17:02he was recruited for this movie because of done of the Dead.
- 17:06Yeah, so I mean the obviously it's stuff is out there for
- 17:10display. Yeah.
- 17:11Really. But yeah, okay.
- 17:14Well, which Dawn of the Dead going back into the moralizing.
- 17:18It is this a religious basis? Is it not?
- 17:21And I mean, obviously at the end I know that it's supposedly all
- 17:23about her son, but I think she's gotten mixed motives here too,
- 17:26and I'm going to get to that later.
- 17:28The Dawn of the Dead was also a fairly controversial movie if I
- 17:31remember because there's a whole lot of socio-political
- 17:35commentary in it. Yeah.
- 17:36So it's not like Tom savini is afraid of being associated with
- 17:39that kind of thing. So when I'm sitting here and I'm
- 17:41like, is there a deeper message here, which we know from behind
- 17:44the scenes that Steve Miller? Is that his first name?
- 17:48No, Steve Miller is the fool. Who the writer?
- 17:53I erase that part of something. It is something like that.
- 17:58I think it's Steven Hiller. If not, if you give us because,
- 18:01you know, we don't have this stuff.
- 18:03Yeah. My notes are kind of all of my
- 18:06handwriting is atrocious. You guys, either way the killer
- 18:11sport. Oh no, no, no, Harry, never
- 18:13dini. Did you color store?
- 18:16Miller I'm just going to call him Miller.
- 18:18I know for a fact, this is awesome.
- 18:19I don't know his last name basis.
- 18:21Yes, we're an elastic. All right heat.
- 18:29Like he's straight up and then it's like, but it's meant to be
- 18:32a Halloween ripoff. Yeah.
- 18:33He, he phoned it in some but he found it in and all his are
- 18:37views and I feel like that's the energy he had while he was
- 18:40writing the movie. And listen, I'm not saying I
- 18:42could write a better movie than that.
- 18:44I've never written a movie. I'm acknowledging that 100%, he
- 18:48wrote a movie and plenty of people considered a classic.
- 18:51Even the person that I had chosen to spend the last decade
- 18:54with, I'm just saying it's not a labor of love with him and it
- 19:00definitely comes across. So that's true.
- 19:05Okay. Like in the commentary or we
- 19:08didn't listen to the commentary but we did some of the special
- 19:11features bass string a commentary.
- 19:13Yeah there's like you didn't work.
- 19:15There was comment. Terry, there's like two or three
- 19:17comma tubes. All right guys, I need you to
- 19:19know I love commentary. All of my favorite shows I have
- 19:22on DVD box set. So I listened to the commentary,
- 19:26I did not know. There was commentary for this
- 19:28movie or we would have listened to it.
- 19:29We did watch every other behind the scenes feature though.
- 19:32Yeah. Even the student.
- 19:33Yeah, even though weird like fan fiction or whatever it was, we
- 19:37can talk about that later. But I mean everybody accepts
- 19:42Sean coming in Cunningham, the director All them is that this
- 19:47was a ripoff of how we enough. This came out two years after
- 19:50Halloween candy. Okay, here's the thing.
- 19:52Halloween, the characters were so much more well fleshed out
- 19:55you actually cared about um even let's rename totally PJ, PJ
- 20:01something totally like you care about her like she's not just
- 20:06like a domed. It like she, you can see the
- 20:08relationship with her and Lori like, you and her and Bob, is it
- 20:14Bob? Yeah.
- 20:16Off the coast, my favorites. My favorite to love that movie,
- 20:21but you can see those relationships flushed out and
- 20:24these counselors that coming. I'm so confused about so many
- 20:28parts of these counselors like half I've got four pages of
- 20:33notes here and I'd say over half of that is me just going like,
- 20:37how old are these kids? Who is, who why do we care about
- 20:41them? But only one that I remember for
- 20:43sure is Ned because Ned's a fuck Dick, he's not enjoyable and
- 20:48it's not even like he's like a mean bully dick.
- 20:50Like it's like that. Hey, aren't I?
- 20:52So funny? It's really.
- 20:54Yeah, he's Reckless. He's got no safety awareness
- 20:57actually seems like in the movie like as it goes on like some of
- 21:01the Campers or the counselors to make yeah, we didn't get campers
- 21:05was or yeah, it's worth trying to keep the camp from opening as
- 21:10they're all disappearing. And everybody keeps asking like
- 21:13where everybody else has been nobody.
- 21:15The ER time asks, where's and then they're just like, and I do
- 21:18believe the worst one that's been gone missing, too.
- 21:20It's like obviously, nobody gave a shit about this, dude, they
- 21:24cared about Kevin Bacon more. Yes.
- 21:26Yeah. I mean like well and Kevin Bacon
- 21:28had it. I'm sorry if you guys are
- 21:30picking up my dog's tongue in your microphone, she is she's a
- 21:34part of the podcast, and we'll talk about her ratings for the
- 21:37movie later, but she also likes to be licking things at all
- 21:41times and we've gotten her a licking pad.
- 21:43We've got her Benadryl, we've gotten her allergy shots.
- 21:45Gotten her squeezy peanut butter.
- 21:47We've gotten all kinds of things for her.
- 21:49It's just who she is. She needs to because she needs
- 21:52to be showing love at all times. So I don't know how much sound a
- 21:56dog tongue picks up on a microphone but that's where it
- 21:59is. She is here she's clearly on my
- 22:01side because she came over to me and like my arm.
- 22:04Okay. And we'll talk about my notes
- 22:06for thalia's rating at the end. First of all, one of the things
- 22:09that we rate that we use her for as a gauge of, if she's
- 22:13interested in moving on is how Often she scratches to go
- 22:17outside during this and I need you guys to understand.
- 22:20We need you guys to understand me Travis and Talia need you to
- 22:23understand that we're not just saying this because we're
- 22:27obsessed with our dog and full disclosure.
- 22:30We are very obsessed with her. I think that's the first thing
- 22:34we tell people really. Hi.
- 22:35My name is Jesse. I have a dog named Tanya plank.
- 22:38Not that we don't love our cats, but like talia's, she's a very
- 22:41big personality and she wants people to know what the cats are
- 22:43like, give me some time, which is fair.
- 22:45They're introverts. Next year, but he really does
- 22:49pay attention to what's on the screen lesson?
- 22:53She loves baseball. For example, that's one of her
- 22:56favorite things and trying to abuse and she was very
- 23:01emotionally invested in and we're going to talk about that
- 23:03maybe later because I'm still mad three months later at Travis
- 23:06for making me watch that movie. I didn't know what we were about
- 23:10to watch. It was my first time watching
- 23:11the movie too. Yeah, dude, it was good for what
- 23:14it is but that's what That's, that's the whole thing is Talia.
- 23:17Talia house emotional reactions to things, including whether she
- 23:21wants to play for a movie or go outside to poop during the movie
- 23:24directors, she didn't go outside any, during this week, we're
- 23:27going to talk about that. I've got a margin full of notes
- 23:30about Talia. We'll talk about it later.
- 23:33I just wanted to, you know, start way if you guys knew
- 23:36didn't know what that sound was. That was coming through on my
- 23:38mic, it was Talia was looking my arm, and my arm is right next to
- 23:42my bike. I'm kind of loud.
- 23:43So my mind gets away from my face.
- 23:45So anyway so anyway, I have um so we're just going to go ahead
- 23:50and we're going to start with an e, she's going to be the cook,
- 23:53right? This is where I get some
- 23:56confusion right off the bat is this is present time.
- 24:00So we hear church bells on this small town, which is making me,
- 24:02which is part of why I was like, is this a religious camp or is
- 24:06it just a small religious Town? Yeah, and having gone through
- 24:09religious camps and having been from small religious towns, I
- 24:12could like a special command as well.
- 24:15Yeah. Well, You're from a small room.
- 24:22So I did not give pause for dog response, so I think I already
- 24:30hated Annie because she saw the doctor, he's like, hey, dog, and
- 24:34just walk past it, which is rude.
- 24:35I love that. Actually gave her directions
- 24:38though it was amazing. Like she, I asked the dog run
- 24:41ago and I don't know that they had some kind of connection.
- 24:44Just go should go this way, okay, thank you.
- 24:46That's Mommy. Why so fast, I'm back.
- 24:50She walks like, um, but yeah. She she so she goes to this
- 24:57Diner, and we've got Ralph there.
- 24:59Who everybody just writes off and I can't tell if it's because
- 25:02like they think he's crazy. I don't like the word crazy and
- 25:06we're gonna have a whole episode about mental health and burn.
- 25:11Hold on just a second tell you is trying to play with toys
- 25:13because she noticed giving everybody assumption But yeah,
- 25:20so Ralph is there and he's called at Camp blood and he's
- 25:23going on about how it is haunted and all this and that so right
- 25:26off the bat, you're like, is it a real killer or is a parent
- 25:29while you've got some of that ambiguity.
- 25:31So I'm going in early Autumn like that.
- 25:34So I likes my how the town fell. Okay.
- 25:38I liked how it kind of like, builds it up as like a the lake
- 25:43is like this ominous voice. I don't know.
- 25:46She goes into the diner and she asks, the people, I can't
- 25:49remember exactly like directions or yeah, she's asking for
- 25:53directions, Jimmy. It's the right and I wonder
- 25:57who's basically, there are basically giving like the brink.
- 26:01So they're giving like, little hints of like, what we're going
- 26:05to find out later. Like, some people pronounce some
- 26:08of the background about things that have happened.
- 26:10They're very rarely happens in this movie, too.
- 26:13Like, you barely get any information, About what is
- 26:18because, like, I feel like it's kind of setting it up as Ralph,
- 26:21is the killer was this a flat as a pancake?
- 26:27That was the two-dimensional character.
- 26:28Oh, is this the real life? Is this just fantasy.
- 26:31So we don't know, we don't know as this is, this paranormal, is
- 26:35this like a person within the data?
- 26:37I think that's cool. I think it kind of bit of
- 26:39uncertainty. There's a little bit of
- 26:41uncertainty but the thing is so we got Ralph out there calling
- 26:45it came But and all this and that and then the truck driver.
- 26:49I did not catch his name. I did not catch a lot of names
- 26:51in this movie. I don't know why it.
- 26:53Yeah, I relied a lot on some titles.
- 26:55Even with the counselors who were supposed to know who they
- 26:57are. I relied a lot on the side boys,
- 27:00and they do not really flesh out the characters in this movie.
- 27:02And, yes, that's my point. It's not necessary.
- 27:07Okay, it is in this movie, it's a slasher movie, okay?
- 27:12It's just a vehicle for like, They're all just kind of there
- 27:18to be killed. Yes.
- 27:19But we don't get to see most of the kills and this.
- 27:22Yeah. So so that's part.
- 27:24That's part of my problem with it.
- 27:26And here's the thing, the guy that's talking about, you know,
- 27:31Ralph gives this whole death curse feel, you know, he talks
- 27:34about it. You know, he's the prophecy guy.
- 27:37He's the Doom prophecy guys. Like that sound.
- 27:39Yes, he's got the arm endure and people don't take him seriously,
- 27:43but they also give some Credence to what he says.
- 27:45And, like I said, I want to go into a whole thing about mental
- 27:47health and horror movie and that's going to be a whole
- 27:49episode on its own, but the truck driver is driving driving
- 27:56her out there and really what he's talking about is nothing
- 27:59that sound Supernatural, you know?
- 28:01He just he talked about there were two kids murdered which
- 28:03presumably is caught it and her boys way, I did not catch his
- 28:08name. Either I caught his girlfriend's
- 28:11name Mary and I wrote very spot and Mary and I did not catch his
- 28:14name. There was a drowning they were
- 28:18fires and then in 1962, the water was bad.
- 28:22Presumably was like poison issue or something.
- 28:25It's never fully clarified, but it, none of that stuff sounds
- 28:29paranormal. And anyway, so it's not as kind
- 28:31of like they're like Ralph is blowing this out of proportion.
- 28:35Like it's just a string of bad luck but he's also a little
- 28:37superstitious that is like it just seems kind of curse but
- 28:40like the way you would be like, you know I would all this
- 28:43happened at the camp. Yes, all this happened.
- 28:46It became this is what the truck drivers telling Annie, and then,
- 28:49here's where I get really confused.
- 28:50Because did he drop her off early because she didn't believe
- 28:55him or did she ask to get out because she was getting weird
- 28:58vibes from him? I don't I don't fully understand
- 29:00what the explain because all of a sudden she's in the woods and
- 29:04being chased, she is hitchhiking again, I don't.
- 29:07Why is she hitchhiking again though?
- 29:09Because the camp is in the town and the guy said he was going to
- 29:11drive her. And I don't understand, I don't
- 29:13know if I missed something in this form.
- 29:15I think it's a dress. I think it's like just standing
- 29:19like hitchhikers stuff. Like I mean I'm very shy but
- 29:23usually you like I can take you this far.
- 29:26Like I'm not going to go all the way to Camp one because you know
- 29:28that shit is scary. But we see that several other
- 29:31types of the movie is that other people get rides to the camp.
- 29:35Yeah. It's just I don't know these
- 29:37people that are visiting Yammer. Coughs.
- 29:39Okay. And they're all looking for
- 29:40Ralph, that's true. Yeah, but yeah, so it was just,
- 29:45it was just kind of Too busy to me and he's like giving this
- 29:47whole back story which I think it was a decent enough way to
- 29:49do. Exposition you have a good.
- 29:51Yeah you have to their Exposition in there somewhere
- 29:53and it's really so yeah if you're not subtle but it feels
- 29:59natural feels organic well okay because if I'm hitchhiking which
- 30:03I'm not hitchhiking but if I'm hitchhiking and I'm like oh what
- 30:06did Ralph mean? When he said that this Camp is
- 30:08cursed and then he like explains it.
- 30:10That's a good way other than just being like, oh, so you're
- 30:13going to Camp Crystal Lake. Let me tell you about About
- 30:15every bad thing, you know what I mean?
- 30:17Like it's a decent way, is a decent vehicle for exposition.
- 30:20I just don't understand what happens that she got out of the
- 30:22car and was hitchhiking again. And gets picked up by this Jeep.
- 30:25Because apparently, everybody in this town drives a cheap.
- 30:30If the source for so much confusion and murder in this
- 30:34movie, that people see a Jeep and they're like, oh no, it's
- 30:36okay. It's a Jeep.
- 30:37I know the guy that drives a Jeep.
- 30:39It's my neighbor remain in my neighbor's neighbor or the guy,
- 30:41go to church looking for a movie.
- 30:44I don't know if he was he drunk. This is our keys was driving.
- 30:47A d-bag comes into play later. I know, that's what I'm saying.
- 30:50Like the whole thing like when she's hit driving a Jeep picks
- 30:54her up and she's like, thank God, you're here.
- 30:56I'm going to give a like and then she gets chased around the
- 30:59woods and then we actually get an on-screen show.
- 31:01So we get to see her and I've beat her her night, her night
- 31:04being slit by my life. Yeah, which is great.
- 31:08Yeah, those are first on screen:.
- 31:10Yeah. And and I believe that was good.
- 31:14It was good. And here's Here's my thing.
- 31:17I got, I had so many questions about all of this all the way
- 31:20through. So Annie is going to this Camp.
- 31:23She's going to be the cook. Which fine she looks really
- 31:26young. Has she been working in kitchens
- 31:28issue just an Enthusiast? How old is she?
- 31:31Like we never get a clear answer of how old she is?
- 31:33What her kitchen experiences. They make a comment about her
- 31:37supposedly being really good at cooking.
- 31:40Like they think that she's really well suited for this job.
- 31:43And she is telling the truck driver how much she loves kids.
- 31:46And she's like, I love to cook and I love kids and I don't cook
- 31:49the kids, which is really important quality in age Camp
- 31:53cook. But like she's just going on
- 31:57about how excited she is about this.
- 31:58So I know that the whole motivation is supposed to be
- 32:00that the camp doesn't open back up.
- 32:02But why is this kill going to be the person that was there?
- 32:05That's excited to be with the kids.
- 32:07I don't get that right away. I don't get how she is old
- 32:12enough to have this like view of.
- 32:14Like I want to make a positive difference in kids life and I'm
- 32:17a good enough cook that. I'm going to be a well-renowned
- 32:19amongst my peers as a camp cook and I love kids and And this is
- 32:25working. This is going to be like, yeah,
- 32:27I know. Okay, so I don't understand why
- 32:30she killed her. Okay.
- 32:32As far as her being like too young for this, I don't know it
- 32:36and they don't go into detail about that.
- 32:37She could just be somebody that will see young.
- 32:39Yeah, that's what but it's part of the character development
- 32:43problem, I have I think it's a big thing because when we
- 32:47consider characters, I mean there's different levels of
- 32:49tragedy, you know, if you're really young it and this is this
- 32:53is awful to say because I think Death is awful at any stage of
- 32:57life and I don't want anybody listening to think that I'm
- 33:01saying that it's worse to die young, but there is a certain
- 33:04tragedy that's associated. When you died really young and
- 33:08from a more practical standpoint, most Camp counselors
- 33:11are teenagers themselves which is probably why we got into this
- 33:15dilemma in the first place because teenagers are hella
- 33:17irresponsible. I don't think that they're
- 33:20teenagers, okay? And what not?
- 33:22We get y, clear answer, why? It's not really their adults.
- 33:27Okay. And they are adults.
- 33:30Yeah, how do you know? Well, I don't think of your
- 33:33work, okay? I don't think a movie would be
- 33:36having like the head. Counselor guy had a relationship
- 33:40with one of the counselors. If they were young also, I feel
- 33:43like that could avoid source is, it could be that and that's my
- 33:46other thing. It is like so explain is its I
- 33:49wasn't supposed to be at she's the final girl and we know that
- 33:52the final girl is supposed to be pure and wholesome.
- 33:55And whatever this right. No, but it came straight up
- 34:01ripped off Halloween. We've established this already.
- 34:04Right? And Lori is like, I think that
- 34:06he is killed, but no, don't tell him.
- 34:08I'm here, I'm Chase. And I'm not saying like Jamie
- 34:11Lee Curtis. I love you so much and I don't
- 34:13want you to think that. I don't want.
- 34:14I love the character of Lori and I can have a whole discourse
- 34:17about look great and we will, but um, but like her character
- 34:23was obviously meant to be very Yeah, and Alice is character is
- 34:27just so much more ambiguous, like, is she there to be a
- 34:30counselor, is she, what did I? Sexy gay Lumberjack is how I
- 34:36first wrote him when he when he appeared as because he was
- 34:39wearing like the short shorts and he had that he had the
- 34:42bandana around his neck, like an Ask, gotten him, a mustache
- 34:44like, oh, but all right. Get it.
- 34:47Like I felt it like it was cool. And then I was like, oh, so he's
- 34:50been sleeping with is this his girlfriend?
- 34:52But no, she supposed to be a counselor or she just hoping.
- 34:55So, About the cat. I didn't know what her role was
- 34:57supposed to be there. It was very unclear.
- 34:59So it was hard to tell how she was going to be interacting with
- 35:01everybody else. She likes that one guy that was
- 35:04also there. I wrote whose name down
- 35:06somewhere here too. I think I know your time.
- 35:10Yeah. But either way click clearly and
- 35:13like she doesn't want to be there.
- 35:15She's she said several times that she's not sure if she's
- 35:17staying or not and she's clearly not comfortable in the camp.
- 35:20Siding. Like she gets freaked out about
- 35:21the snake, which I'm sorry for going to be a camp counselor,
- 35:24you have to expect to see some snakes.
- 35:26It's just a thing. Like there's just there's so
- 35:32much about her. That doesn't I don't know what
- 35:34for will the supposed to be in the camp?
- 35:36Is she here? Kind of by mistake?
- 35:38Is she here out of love? Is she here?
- 35:40Because she wants to be a counselor but she's out of her
- 35:42element, I don't know. It kind of takes away from some
- 35:44of those like, what could be perceived as tragic, irony at
- 35:49the end, you know what I mean? So that that's one of those
- 35:53things that I have problems with m Also, I wrote suspenders, but
- 35:59shirtless bill. So bill is the guy that Alice
- 36:03likes and Alice apparently or Bill apparently likes
- 36:07suspenders. Even if he doesn't like to wear
- 36:09shirts. Yeah, that's what that's, that's
- 36:12his name. That's where I first paid
- 36:14attention to Bill. Okay.
- 36:16Okay, so for the record for the record season, I'm writing
- 36:20realistic characters because you know, you're saying that They
- 36:26don't have any motivation, and they're not sure they're not
- 36:30following the rules of the final girl.
- 36:32That was not really established at this point.
- 36:34Okay? Like this is very early on in
- 36:37like slasher history. Okay.
- 36:43I think it's kind of cool that house wasn't like she didn't fit
- 36:46the mold of my Jamie Lee Curtis and Halloween.
- 36:49I know it's like a blatant ripoff of.
- 36:51This is like one of the differences.
- 36:53Like she's a real person like She has a relationship with that
- 36:57guy. She's uncertain about you know,
- 37:00if she really wants to be there not her what she's wanting to do
- 37:03with her wife and she is like she plays like strip poker or
- 37:09whatever with them later. Like she's okay.
- 37:12She's not restricted to do something.
- 37:14It's not strip. Poker is strip Monopoly.
- 37:16That's right. Yeah so weird.
- 37:17Yeah what I loved about that scene is that the other two
- 37:21characters are down to like two items of clothing each and she
- 37:25is A full address. What?
- 37:27Yeah, so that's one of the things I get and I don't want
- 37:30anybody who comes slut shaming because no people should be able
- 37:33to have sex and not be afraid. Like, it shouldn't be a thing
- 37:36and it's this whole Trope in horror and that I was just
- 37:39saying because they're basing it off of Halloween.
- 37:41And there was clearly this element of period Purity that
- 37:43was associated with Lori. But with Alice is a little bit
- 37:47more ambiguous and there was even part of it that I was like
- 37:49because we don't know what her ages.
- 37:51So I'm like, is there a predatory element to?
- 37:54Yeah, they Lumberjack. Yeah, he kind of is And and I,
- 37:57that's just how I was writing it in my notes because he just
- 37:59like, and I loved the look, I really did at the time.
- 38:04Yeah. Like it wasn't like, it was a
- 38:05really great life, but that was just my shorthand for it.
- 38:08Because like I said, I couldn't remember any of these characters
- 38:10names because I just don't give a shit about any of them,
- 38:13besides Alex, like, so I had my shorthand until their names were
- 38:17clearly defined for me, gave up Kevin Bacon, he will you play a
- 38:20pretty good Kevin Bacon? You clearly didn't care about is
- 38:24getting faster. Okay, that's That point okay
- 38:27well okay first of all, I mean if you're watching one of these
- 38:31horror movies and you get like an actor like that, you're not
- 38:33going to call him. Like they're actually going to
- 38:36be like that's fucking Matthew McConaughey from Texas, Chainsaw
- 38:39Massacre and because that's such a weird thing like he'd seen
- 38:43these people in these ideas very early in their career but
- 38:46Jennifer Aniston and leprechaun, exactly yeah.
- 38:50So yeah, no II get it, I get what you're saying. but yeah,
- 38:58it's just, it's She has more complexity because we're putting
- 39:04more attention to her and that's fine, because she is the
- 39:07character that we're. She's our protagonist in this
- 39:10movie, you know? But we have so many other deaths
- 39:14before her and it's just like, what's the point?
- 39:18Especially, because we're not even seeing it.
- 39:19Like, in the later movie is it definitely becomes so
- 39:22outrageous. And that's part of what I love
- 39:25about it. I love special effects.
- 39:27I love Camp. I love over the top and those
- 39:30later movies too. Over it.
- 39:33But in this movie like we have the vehicle for the killings.
- 39:39Yeah. But we don't see the killings
- 39:41for the most part, I'll give you that.
- 39:42Okay, so so it's like what am I getting out of this movie?
- 39:46You know what I mean? I was really disappointed.
- 39:48It didn't a long time since I had watched this and I was
- 39:51explicitly because he has been with me for nine years and just
- 39:54every time he's like to do you want to watch Friday the 13th?
- 39:56I'm like, how about we watch Jason X or how about we watch?
- 40:00Jason Takes Manhattan. I Yes, yes, but yeah.
- 40:05Okay. You gotta remember all of the
- 40:08following Friday, the 13th movies because of how successful
- 40:11is one was with as how awesome everybody realize.
- 40:14This was, they had a bigger budget.
- 40:15Okay. So you've already pulled in Tom
- 40:17savini who clearly was like in high demand at this time so they
- 40:21were wanting to execute the kills and we don't get water on
- 40:26screen gills but we do get they are super effective.
- 40:31Well, I work and I'm not saying they're not.
- 40:33Not, but I'm saying like, you know, you're talking about these
- 40:35characters are flat because they're just vehicles for the
- 40:37kill. I think this movie is a whole is
- 40:39a flat because it's a vehicle for the franchise.
- 40:43You know what I mean? I know he's you don't care about
- 40:45the character. He even gets, you can kill in
- 40:48the story. He was surprised that they were
- 40:50going to do, see what? Yeah, he just all he wanted to
- 40:53do and I don't know, and then it was a little better second.
- 40:58All he wanted to do was a ripoff Halloween which that's probably
- 41:02admittedly Heh. Why I like this movie so much is
- 41:05because Halloween is my favorite movie of all time.
- 41:08Yes, I doubt that opening scene like that was straight about
- 41:13Halloween, rip off. Like first person view kind of
- 41:15going into the building getting the murder weapon going
- 41:18upstairs. Yeah, it was awesome.
- 41:20I mean it just it the only thing was it wasn't point post-coitus
- 41:23and there were no titties. I made a note about knows
- 41:25hideous. Yeah, I like oh no these this is
- 41:30early early. I'm just saying that there were
- 41:33no, there were no titties, I'm just are there any citizen who,
- 41:36you know, hey, it's kind of surprising.
- 41:40All right, like there were some moments see listen, uh I don't
- 41:47think there is any good either way.
- 41:51Okay, but yeah. So we've got we've got this cast
- 41:55of characters that we just can't really tell apart.
- 41:57One of them is Kevin Bacon. One of them's Ned who's a dick I
- 42:01wrote Ned, you ignorant slut because he just decides to shoot
- 42:05an arrow at somebody who is setting up the arrow targets?
- 42:08Which is just, you have to have a lot of confidence in yourself
- 42:14that your aim is on point according to.
- 42:18This does not seem Like he is that confident in himself that
- 42:23apparently it was Tom savini shooting.
- 42:25That's who according to him and believe that Tom savini.
- 42:28Is that comp do they truly? Do they read?
- 42:30Okay, this dude does make up really well.
- 42:32Like let's go ahead and shoot an arrow at me sitting right next
- 42:35to us. All something is a multi-faceted
- 42:37person Travis and I really wish you would not try and make him
- 42:40as two dimensional characters. In this movie, he kicks ass and
- 42:42make of but I would not trust anybody to shoot an arrow that
- 42:47close. Yeah but net.
- 42:51Okay, I understand what you're saying about him being like a
- 42:53really unlikable character and I feel like for movies like this,
- 42:59like you kind of need that one character that you made because
- 43:02when they get killed and makes it that much more satisfying,
- 43:06however, his is another Oscar. We don't see on screen.
- 43:10We don't even have a timeline for.
- 43:11Really when it happens. We thought it was like, when the
- 43:14sun's happening we have like a rough.
- 43:16Yeah. But the other thing is that like
- 43:19yeah, he's an online. Character.
- 43:21But his friends seem to like him, like they call him Eddie
- 43:23they didn't care about it when he went missing.
- 43:25I know that he cares. Nobody asked about like oh
- 43:28that's just nutty. Like that's not like I've had
- 43:32friends like that that are just total dicks.
- 43:34And yeah, I love them for who they are as people but I'm not
- 43:38like oh that's just Silly Willy. You know what I mean?
- 43:42Like I'm not gonna sit there and give like I'm not going to tell
- 43:45them that they're super cute. It's just, it's just weird.
- 43:49I have Our notes are sequential and we're not necessarily
- 43:53talking about these movies Beat by beat.
- 43:55But I just I really want to acknowledge some of the good
- 43:59directing choices that are in here as well because I feel like
- 44:01I'm I feel like it probably sounds like I'm being really
- 44:04harsh on this movie and I'm not I'm just curious.
- 44:11So before Annie gets killed when she still hitchhiking and she
- 44:14sees the random Jeep, I love the way it shots that you see the
- 44:17Jeep, coming up the street and it R Street.
- 44:20Road, it's a dirt road. You see it coming up the road
- 44:24and you can't tell who's driving, and I think that's such
- 44:26an effective shot because you don't really think much of it.
- 44:29Yeah. If the first time you're
- 44:30watching it cuz you just like oh somebody's gonna pick her up,
- 44:33she was hitchhiking. It makes sense.
- 44:35I think it's just such an effective way that it shot and
- 44:37like you said that heat comes back and is important later.
- 44:40Yeah. But I just, I thought that was a
- 44:44really nice touch. I think that there there are a
- 44:47lot of really good aspects of this movie.
- 44:50I think the soundtrack is amazing.
- 44:52I was really, really struck by or while we were watching it by
- 44:55the way. Always I made a note when we
- 44:57were okay. We have why it's in our quiz.
- 45:00So the way we haven't packed in go, so here the lights up to
- 45:03music and also a Christmas. I said, well, they were wild and
- 45:07out like so yes, there is no wheat.
- 45:09Yeah, we've got sound responsive lights throughout our Because
- 45:13we're generally spastic people, I guess it was worth it because
- 45:17it was kind of cool. It was really actually great.
- 45:19When we watch movies and we see that the lights are like, oh,
- 45:22this is the mood that we should be responding.
- 45:23As it's kind of like our own personal Applause sign in our
- 45:29but yeah. So we see, I kind of, I think
- 45:36the only character that got flushed out any more than Alice
- 45:39was Marcy. She was a lot was always wearing
- 45:42red. Yeah.
- 45:43And I know this because she was always wearing red and I was
- 45:45like, is this because you blend in with every other character in
- 45:48this movie, that isn't Alice. But she looked really hot when
- 45:53she was on the raft, I was like, she's got hips.
- 45:56That's really nice. Like it's good to see like a
- 45:58like, curvy figure. Um, good for her.
- 46:04She's on the rap and which one will she get?
- 46:07Okay. I know the one that was always
- 46:09wearing red. She I wrote Marci, you're a hot
- 46:11weirdo but I don't hate it and that's later on if after the
- 46:15strip coat, the strip Monopoly. So she said yes she's part of
- 46:19it, I remember her now. Okay, so I think she's the only
- 46:23other character that really gets any kind of Dimension and it's
- 46:26just barely like it's not enough.
- 46:28It's enough that I'm like your hot weirdo.
- 46:31But it's not in that like it's just enough for me to care about
- 46:35her death. And I wish like every character
- 46:36had a little bit more of that. But yeah.
- 46:40So they're all this raft and then Ned pretends that he's
- 46:43drowning and this should be, this is a whole thing because
- 46:48mrs. Voorhees motivation.
- 46:50Is that her son died because their Z Reckless teenagers that
- 46:54are in charge of children in the whole the whole camp.
- 46:59Set up is so insane. Um, and I mean teenagers and
- 47:04young adults, I guess it varies from which Camp you go to a
- 47:07Jesus Camp, it was teenagers. I know my roommate in college.
- 47:12She was a camp counselor and obviously we were seniors in
- 47:14college. So she was older but it's still
- 47:16like is just like insane to think about how young somebody
- 47:20can be to look after somebody else.
- 47:21That's so young, and that is in there and he's like, he's
- 47:25fucking around, he's pretending to drown.
- 47:26He's making his friends scared for him and like he really plays
- 47:30the bit. Really think that something
- 47:32happened so it's just like, he's just so reckless.
- 47:35How did he get this job in the first place?
- 47:37I don't understand. Background checks?
- 47:39Yes. No background checks, nothing.
- 47:41I just want Y is Ned. Why is that?
- 47:45Because that we see him after the snake thing that I was
- 47:48talking about earlier we're everybody freaks out about the
- 47:50snake. You're working in a camper in
- 47:51the wilderness. Like I don't know.
- 47:56I grew up. I grew up going to the lake,
- 47:58almost every weekend and I just You see a copperhead, you smash
- 48:03it with a log. I'm a vegetarian.
- 48:04And I want everybody know I love the animals right now but like
- 48:07it was just the thing. It was just a thing because my
- 48:08parents and my friends parents, which were my parents friends.
- 48:14Yeah. But they like they didn't want
- 48:18us to get bit by a copperhead because that is like incredibly
- 48:21dangerous like we would be out in the water and then we like,
- 48:24I'd be like, oh, there's my uncle with the with the lock and
- 48:28must be a corporate, you know what I mean?
- 48:30Like you just you And those things if you're out in the
- 48:32woods enough and I think I am, maybe I'm just an over pair that
- 48:37I think if I knew that I was going to be a camp counselor and
- 48:40that I was going to be out in the woods, I would want to know,
- 48:42a little something about the Flora and Fauna is on saying
- 48:47this K, but then we cut from the snakes in also during the snake
- 48:52scene but been just collapses when they jump off to it.
- 48:56So has the furniture been replaced, since the 50s, I
- 49:01forgot about that. Yeah.
- 49:02Yeah. How big of a Scenic?
- 49:04How big of an order to do? That one is a just destroying
- 49:07the whole cabin trying to just collapse, isn't it?
- 49:12Like what happens when you've got hyperactive children in
- 49:16there and they're jumping on the bed looking at something like,
- 49:21you know, I've been thinking. So I just think that Steve is
- 49:25that the can't Camp owner is named Eliza.
- 49:28Okay. One more Jack.
- 49:29Sure it was just Callin, Lumberjack, Lumberjack cover.
- 49:31Steve. Yeah, it just it seems like he
- 49:35was not prepared because all these counselors are here week
- 49:38early. And it's really in there.
- 49:40Yes, he's barely even there. And like they're all supposed to
- 49:43be responsible for getting the camp.
- 49:45Ready, they're putting up Alice is putting up gutters.
- 49:48I don't like I mean I know we don't get it to move over
- 49:50cleaning crews cleaning how much is put them up.
- 49:53There's like Hammer action involved it just he clearly
- 49:59wasn't ready for this. I don't think.
- 50:01You can pick the type of guy. He's got, he's got Big Ideas,
- 50:03he's got big plans, but he lacks on the follow-through.
- 50:07Yeah, well we don't really do much how don't get much of him,
- 50:10but that's kind of the impression that I get.
- 50:12We all know those type of people that wanted to mention during
- 50:16that whole scene though I can while they're out there at the
- 50:19weekend, he's pretending to drown.
- 50:21I thought it was really cool to have like that shot of like
- 50:23somebody like spying off in the distance because it kind of
- 50:27makes you think it's Ralph like they kind of like plant that
- 50:30seed early on Yeah, the Mickey D's in they do because we've got
- 50:34that scene and then we got the snake scene and then immediately
- 50:38we have the same were Ned is racist and wearing a shirt as a
- 50:42diaper. Yeah.
- 50:44Why do they have a headdress? Why is Ralph wearing it or
- 50:51graph? Y is Ned?
- 50:52Wearing it Y is Ned. Why isn't it?
- 50:55Why is Ned. He's wearing a shirt as like a
- 50:59diaper. I don't know if it's supposed to
- 51:01be. Turkey or funny, I don't know.
- 51:02He just comes across this incredibly immature but then
- 51:05this cop comes up in the club is so hostile.
- 51:09He's so fucking hot. Doesn't these kids?
- 51:12Which impacts on that? I might be hostile to him but
- 51:14he's so off to the all the rest of he's looking for Ralph and I
- 51:18gave, but it seems more like it's a welfare situation because
- 51:21they know that Ralph has these issues.
- 51:23It seems like he's got like some substance abuse history and this
- 51:26is my sister. Yeah, he's right looking for
- 51:28him. It and it seems like you get the
- 51:30impression that the All town and everybody knows Ned and they're
- 51:33just trying to like you know, locate him, make sure he's not
- 51:36getting into trouble. Make sure he's not hurting
- 51:38anyone. Make sure he's not hurting it
- 51:39himself. But this cop is so mean to these
- 51:44people, he doesn't even know. I think it's kind of par for the
- 51:47course for a pop. Okay.
- 51:50And maybe, but it doesn't hold up with the rest of the cops.
- 51:54We see in the rest of the Michigan State.
- 52:01Reason and it almost like is he meant to be a red herring.
- 52:05Are we supposed to suspect him? But at this point I think like
- 52:08you said, Ralph is meant to be the red herring because rho is
- 52:11missing real hits. The can you know, spying on the
- 52:14bullshit series just like I'm just left like the cop people
- 52:18needlessly mean and it just yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:31Oh okay my correction Marcy is not the one that wears red is
- 52:35Brenda that wears red Brenda wears red and then she wears
- 52:38nothing to go have sex with Kevin Bacon in the cabin when it
- 52:41starts to rain. That's right.
- 52:43That's right here. It's because of Kevin Bacon, by
- 52:46the way. I don't think we we don't see
- 52:48her dad, right? We see his stuff.
- 52:50Yes, it is. This is awesome.
- 52:53This is probably the best known of any because that's the one
- 52:56where he's like, just laying on the bunk bed and he's like,
- 52:59smoking weed and then off Like the arm comes out from
- 53:02underneath the bed and grab some just sections, the arrowhead and
- 53:06I right through the bed and right there is throat.
- 53:09Yes that's that's amazing. That's iconic that Punic Punic
- 53:12seen. And I think that is completely
- 53:14worth mentioning and it comes out of nowhere.
- 53:18Yeah, it runs out. You get the dead body, you get,
- 53:21you seen that isn't a bunk above them, like, they haven't noticed
- 53:24that of them. But yeah, like that just like
- 53:28it's been so long since I've seen that, like, seen as soon as
- 53:30a holy shit like that. That was awesome about.
- 53:33Yeah, I love it. Yeah, no, that's a great scene.
- 53:37I think a big part of the problem that I have with it is
- 53:40that all of a sudden Brenda's, like I'm gonna go to the
- 53:42bathroom, but she goes out there and just like her shirt and
- 53:45panties and it's raining and June's going on my God to that.
- 53:48It's like, we're the rest of your clothes.
- 53:50What's happening? Why are you, why are you going
- 53:54out in these elements? You know what I mean?
- 53:58Zipper Billy, I thought she was in the same building, she went
- 54:01out. She went out the building.
- 54:03I was, if we wrote these notes about a week ago, has been,
- 54:07we've been trying to get our equipment situation sorted out.
- 54:13But yeah, obviously it's a she yeah they're kind of just like a
- 54:19vehicle for this shit that happened.
- 54:21Okay. Yeah.
- 54:21I didn't like I get it. You do you do the sex and you
- 54:25don't always want to put sexy, you do the sex, you do the diet,
- 54:28you don't always want to put the pants back on in between and
- 54:31then stared. Yeah, well, I feel like they
- 54:33really couldn't go again but yeah, going outside and swarm
- 54:37and multiply, in other words, it is kind of says it just.
- 54:39It doesn't make any sense. And then like, cut in between
- 54:42the scene with Kevin Bacon Buying and Brenda not wearing
- 54:44pants. We have we have them playing
- 54:47strip Monopoly which we talked about earlier and illustrate the
- 54:50mean everybody always tripping game ever.
- 54:52And we touched on this in our introduction episode, which if
- 54:56you didn't listen to it, I don't blame you, don't feel the need
- 54:58to go back and listen to it. But my family, it's a great,
- 55:00it's incredibly competitive true and we're not allowed to play
- 55:06Monopoly anymore and so the whole time they're playing this,
- 55:10I'm just like, this is the worst idea because you're going to get
- 55:13Get into a fight with somebody and you did, he's gonna be out
- 55:16like, I just dislike the, let's look at that diffuses, all of my
- 55:20God, still dirty and that game. Like you're naked at the person
- 55:24is like it's like imagining like when your public speaking.
- 55:26Somebody with no clothes on? No.
- 55:28No. That'd be like the same thing
- 55:29applies. So I guess just not really your
- 55:30Out For Blood and clearly Alice was of the same mindset as me.
- 55:34She could probably hang with my family because she's yeah, I
- 55:37don't think she took off any clothes.
- 55:39Like maybe like a shirt. I don't know.
- 55:41But she's just, she's just buying up all Sorry she's
- 55:44getting their Grant. Like, she's she's
- 55:45unrealistically good and I think this is part of the moment where
- 55:48we start to really set her as the final girl because before,
- 55:51you know, we have all this ambiguity, we don't have a
- 55:53photonic character development for anyone other than like,
- 55:56Alice is in this relief. This ambiguous kind of
- 55:59relationship with Lumberjack, Steve leg.
- 56:01We don't we don't have a real feel for anybody's character at
- 56:06this point. Other than that, being a dick.
- 56:08And I think this is kind of part of it.
- 56:11She's like, I'm smart. You know what I mean?
- 56:14Like I feel like that's where that's coming in and then we see
- 56:19that like Steve's Jeep Saul's out.
- 56:23So he can't drive back to the camp.
- 56:25How does he get better? You, he ends up getting a ride
- 56:27with a cop. That's right.
- 56:29And he drops them off like halfway sticks and that's and
- 56:33that's the thing when Miller was talking about writing the
- 56:37writing the script, he's like, how do we get all of these teens
- 56:39together without any adults around?
- 56:41Which obviously means that To be teens, but it's not that that
- 56:45makes his relationship with ours.
- 56:46All the morning squeaky. What do we know his age?
- 56:49I mean he could be like okay our when I say like anybody he's
- 56:54obviously in a position of power.
- 56:55So yeah, should be doing this is such a sorry.
- 56:59Yeah, I don't know, it's just, it's I'm just uncomfortable with
- 57:04it. I don't.
- 57:04I need a little bit more clear lines to know how I feel about
- 57:08their relationship. But yeah, so he's just have
- 57:13always on his Steve his his Jeep just stalled out his seizure I
- 57:17said Steve because I was like Jeep stalls and we're also
- 57:20talking about a jack Steve. Yeah, but yeah, his Jeep just
- 57:25stalls out and we don't really have any reason why I don't, I
- 57:28don't drive a Jeep. So I don't know if this is a
- 57:30common problem with Jeeps but it just stalls out.
- 57:33So it just feels like very convenient, you know, it's like
- 57:35in my, like, in modern day for where they have to find a good
- 57:39reason for cell phones, not to be working because That's the
- 57:42thing that look, what are you? Just call for help.
- 57:44You always hope so phone service.
- 57:45You know what I mean? Like the strangers always like,
- 57:47smash their phones. And yeah, and your next, they
- 57:51put up the blocker like they make it very explicit.
- 57:53Why you cannot but the thing is he's okay.
- 57:56I feel like, the reason that that happens is one bike.
- 57:59You can't have his Jeep already there.
- 58:01When mrs. Ortiz like comes back, we're
- 58:04gonna have to make it think that it's him.
- 58:07That's there. I agree.
- 58:08And also he makes it back there on his own.
- 58:11Get back here. I just want to know why his Jeep
- 58:14start out, even if it had been one line.
- 58:17When he was like, I'm gonna go to town and like he had a false
- 58:20start with his Jeep and he like piece of shit.
- 58:22I need to replace the alternator or whatever.
- 58:24I don't know anything about cars.
- 58:25I don't know what causes and think this all out but you know
- 58:29if we have any kind of context is to like oh this could be a
- 58:31potential problem later, but we don't it's just like all of a
- 58:35sudden his car can view does not work.
- 58:37That's hands. So it slows him down, getting a
- 58:40ride back from the sheriff and It also means that when mrs.
- 58:43Voorhees Jeep pulls up, they think that it's Steve's.
- 58:45Yeah, which is all fine. And well to give the impression
- 58:48that it's Steve coming back but we don't really it just.
- 58:52It feels very convenient which means it feels a little lazy to
- 58:55me. Okay, I can see that.
- 58:58I mean they could have made that Roi go in that except just kind
- 59:03of magically comes up to you. And like if you got to do
- 59:05something you probably should like make like put some hints
- 59:09earlier on in the film. I mean kind of like that.
- 59:11It was like you know the boy drowning when the Annie is
- 59:16getting the ride from the truck driver whatever.
- 59:18You know. They're put, like they're laying
- 59:20the groundwork about what pick who the actual killer is like
- 59:24the reason the motivation behind it.
- 59:26But I mean, you know, which gets us to the point I guess Sporty's
- 59:32finally does show up. I don't know, it's so okay as a
- 59:38point, but Steve's Jeep. Stalled out shit.
- 59:41Going haywire back at the camp, right?
- 59:43Cause it's like, Kevin Bacon has been narrowed through the
- 59:46throat, Brenda has been murdered.
- 59:48Pantsless out in the rain, Ned died at some point and nobody
- 59:52cared and then there's a girl that goes out and goes to the
- 59:57archery range and I go out in this storm.
- 1:00:00She's the one that's in red, right?
- 1:00:02The yeah, that's Brenda. That's what I was saying.
- 1:00:04Quite as she leave her close-up. Yeah. yeah, we've got Where's my
- 1:00:12note about Mars City? Yeah.
- 1:00:16So Marcy had gone out after they finish their strip - strip
- 1:00:19Monopoly and she's she's out at Lake.
- 1:00:23Whatever they can't bathroom shower area.
- 1:00:26Whatever is all of this same. Yes.
- 1:00:28And it's not like she's just, she's making impressions in the
- 1:00:31mirror, she's quoting movies and like that.
- 1:00:33That's what I'm talking about. You get that tiny little bit of
- 1:00:35character development with her. Yeah, I was like oh cool.
- 1:00:38She talks to herself like that's kind of funny I kind of
- 1:00:40appreciate it very much. Was it right there?
- 1:00:42Yes. And like she's also I really
- 1:00:46appreciated also that she had like frizzy hair from the rain
- 1:00:50and because we don't often see realistic hair for trails and
- 1:00:53routes. Yeah, we watched wanted which
- 1:00:57was a great movie but I had a lot of complaints about the hair
- 1:01:01and makeup. Yeah.
- 1:01:02And they had the hair thing like they gave, they gave Marcy.
- 1:01:06Realistically frizzy hair. If you go out in the rain your
- 1:01:08hair is going to be really frizzy.
- 1:01:11And then that, so she gets killed in this bathroom that is
- 1:01:16Sarah, that was awesome. When you get to that shot and
- 1:01:19like into the shower and a PC, like the movement back there,
- 1:01:23I'll look, I feel like it could have been edited a little bit
- 1:01:25better because it So, like I was talking about earlier with the,
- 1:01:32with the fight flight or freeze, right?
- 1:01:34And it seemed like she was meant to freeze, but it didn't look
- 1:01:36like she was frozen. It looked like she was given a
- 1:01:39stage direction that like, you're going to see the Killer.
- 1:01:41And you're just going to wait for her to kill you, that was
- 1:01:44another one off screen, right? Yes.
- 1:01:46So, he didn't even show her like investigate, I did, she just say
- 1:01:50she's yeah, she's just in the bathrooms and then all of a
- 1:01:53sudden she turns around and the Killer's there and she just
- 1:01:56doesn't move. It's like a whole five seconds.
- 1:01:58Out of her that she just doesn't move and it's just like she
- 1:02:03could look more Frozen in fear, you know what I mean?
- 1:02:06Like I just feel like it, maybe it was not the best Direction
- 1:02:08given to her because it seemed like she was just told to like,
- 1:02:12Sauce when she's yeah, like just stop when she sees the killer,
- 1:02:16but it doesn't feel like she's stopping out of fear to me.
- 1:02:19It's just, she's like, oh, because especially, like in
- 1:02:23retrospect when you're watching the movie, you know, this is
- 1:02:26woman that's in like a turtleneck sweater like know
- 1:02:29this point, but she's holed, that's what I'm saying, that
- 1:02:31respect. Like, you know, that's what
- 1:02:34she's seeing. Yeah.
- 1:02:35But like this woman with this weapon and then the light goes
- 1:02:38out, but it's like, did the axe hit the light when she was
- 1:02:41swinging. It in which case that's load the
- 1:02:44momentum down and shouldn't have killed her right away.
- 1:02:47I just really over thought mercies death because it just,
- 1:02:50it didn't, it didn't flow, as neatly as I felt like it should
- 1:02:53have. I feel like that scene could
- 1:02:54have been cut by about 10 or 15 seconds and it would have been
- 1:02:56much more effective for me. Because I did, I did like Mercy.
- 1:03:00She was a heart weirdo. I thought it was nice.
- 1:03:02Yeah, I love this. Um, like I said, I like that
- 1:03:05whole set of how I cow like there.
- 1:03:07She's in there doing that and there's that moving in like the
- 1:03:11showers. And behind the curtain and you
- 1:03:13can like see the killer of actually really plays on our
- 1:03:16Primal fears. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:03:18Look, it's a very real thing. I mean, even in the mornings
- 1:03:21when I wake up before you to shower and I'm like, any the
- 1:03:24peak behind the shower, curtain before I get ya like before I
- 1:03:28get to talk about in here and pick on the shower, make sure
- 1:03:30that I'm not gonna get killed this is down but yeah it just it
- 1:03:36just becomes this whole thing and this is where shit is like
- 1:03:38hittin the fan across the camp. Like they're aware that
- 1:03:41something weird. Is going on like Alice is like,
- 1:03:43oh no things aren't right. And this is where I start to
- 1:03:46have a problem with Alice as a final girl because like I said
- 1:03:51we got some ambiguity. I don't know how I feel about
- 1:03:54her as a character yet and that's fine.
- 1:03:56Like maybe we'll get some more development and we do get some
- 1:03:58more development on her. But at this point, like she's
- 1:04:01calling Bill to come help her think she's like built.
- 1:04:05There's a scream at the archery range and now the lights are
- 1:04:08out. Can you go check it out and
- 1:04:09like, she's not doing anything herself and it stays Kind of
- 1:04:12like really frustrate me and then like the generator goes
- 1:04:15out. And then usually bill can you
- 1:04:18can fix the generator and he's like, go have a nap on the couch
- 1:04:22and it's just like what is she doing herself?
- 1:04:24I really want to have a strong female character to root for and
- 1:04:28I just don't feel like she is completely strong until the
- 1:04:31moment that she is forced to being strong.
- 1:04:33And it's kind of frustrating to me.
- 1:04:35I don't think there's anything wrong with character growth and
- 1:04:38like being like a Meek person and they halfway show, her being
- 1:04:42meek and unsure of herself with the Holy.
- 1:04:44I don't know if I'm going to stay at the camp or not.
- 1:04:46Not. But I just, it's not enough for
- 1:04:48me to feel that full character development from her.
- 1:04:51And it's just, it's frustrating because it's like, how do I root
- 1:04:54for somebody that has like, been asking other people to take care
- 1:04:58of things for her this whole time?
- 1:05:00You know what I mean? Maybe that's kind of part of
- 1:05:03like how like at the end when shit gets real and everybody's
- 1:05:08dead. She has to face these fears or
- 1:05:10so like Casey's issues buyers. So you know, I maybe that's part
- 1:05:15of the setup like Guess we don't see enough of that.
- 1:05:19They make this from her right from the beginning.
- 1:05:22We see a little bit of, you know, I'm sure.
- 1:05:24But it's not and just it doesn't feel like enough and it's not
- 1:05:27enough for me to root for her, you know what I mean?
- 1:05:30Yeah. Would you rather rude for Marcy
- 1:05:35or where anyone probably Marcy was at least like she's a little
- 1:05:39bit more interesting. Yeah.
- 1:05:45Then bill is out there checking out for archery and he gets up.
- 1:05:48He earned no he's not checking out the archery at this point
- 1:05:51Alice comes out of the cabin and she's that bill has been killed
- 1:05:54with arrows and I just wrote while I was building one killed
- 1:05:57with arrows. Why was it not Ned?
- 1:05:59Since he was willing to try and shoot his friends with are
- 1:06:02that's a good point. They should have done that.
- 1:06:04That would have been perfect. Yeah, that's like payback for
- 1:06:07being such an asshole. Yes, I just I thought that would
- 1:06:12have Made me feel a lot better. You guys.
- 1:06:16How you over here to this way? Yeah, we got we got tire has a
- 1:06:19crinkly toy that she's decided that she needs to bring out in
- 1:06:22the things I got moment because she knows, we're getting ready
- 1:06:24to talk to her rating on this movie, but we're not quite there
- 1:06:29yet. Pop, let us finish up rather the
- 1:06:33point where it's Alice versus yes, it's Alice versus mrs.
- 1:06:36Voorhees. And So she's figured out that
- 1:06:40the Jeep is not Steve and she goes back into the cabin and it
- 1:06:43was a smart idea for her to barricade.
- 1:06:45I will give her that like, she's like, tying the rope and all of
- 1:06:48this and that. So she put the door swings
- 1:06:51outward. So why was she putting?
- 1:06:53Why does she play so much time? And effort to put them are like
- 1:06:56his. I get that A Bear cake is slow
- 1:06:58somebody down but like the like the door swings out and then she
- 1:07:03decides that she's gonna leave the cabin because somebody's
- 1:07:07body gets thrown through the window, right?
- 1:07:08Start she decides. She's gonna run through the
- 1:07:10front door. She moves the barricade in like,
- 1:07:12five seconds. So, it wasn't even enough of a
- 1:07:14barricade to slow somebody down. No.
- 1:07:16Right. This is just, you know, it's
- 1:07:19like the beginning with the girl throwing the box.
- 1:07:21Like she's like shit. I got that.
- 1:07:23I throw shit bud or because that's what you do in this
- 1:07:25scenario. I mean I've got there was at
- 1:07:27least a little bit more of line of logic with that and I will I
- 1:07:32will give some credit to that but it just it's it was kind of
- 1:07:36like she made she made an okay dish.
- 1:07:38Decision. But I still wish it had been
- 1:07:41better, but then she then she goes to the Jeep and finds any
- 1:07:47is dead body in there and decides that, that means that
- 1:07:51she can't drive the Jeep. And I don't get that decision
- 1:07:55either because, yeah, it's really traumatic to see a dead
- 1:07:57body. But if you yourself do not want
- 1:07:59to be in a dead body, you know what I mean?
- 1:08:02Wait, I agree with you? And it's almost like, did mrs.
- 1:08:06Voorhees know this was gonna happen because she killed Any
- 1:08:09out in the woods up against the tree after Annie had ran bit.
- 1:08:13So does she carry any back to the Jeep?
- 1:08:15So for this exact moment you gotta like this supposed to have
- 1:08:19it in something like yeah, I don't know how really think that
- 1:08:24she is running with like a game plan here.
- 1:08:27She's just like oh, are you a camp, counselor?
- 1:08:29Okay, cool. I'm going to kill you like,
- 1:08:31that's it. Like this like the motivation
- 1:08:33here? It's very loose okay and she's
- 1:08:37just somebody who she snapped and she's the old people for
- 1:08:44being a camp. Counselor please.
- 1:08:45And then then this is this is where it comes down to.
- 1:08:49And Mrs. Voorhees gives Alice all of this explanation as to
- 1:08:58why she's doing the killing, which leads me.
- 1:09:01To wonder was mrs. Voorhees, given the script
- 1:09:04beforehand to be like, oh, this is the character get that gets
- 1:09:08the most development. This is the character.
- 1:09:10Get that gets to hear evil master plan?
- 1:09:13No, I'm talking about mrs. Voorhees, as a character, why
- 1:09:16did she decide that Alice gets to hear what her master plan is?
- 1:09:20Why did she decide that she's going to Snack Alice around a
- 1:09:23little bit before killing her. She's here she is.
- 1:09:26That's what I'm gonna do is, is dead right away.
- 1:09:29It's what I can do, why? Because she actually have a
- 1:09:32fire. She tried killing Alice first.
- 1:09:35Well, first of all, I mean, you kind of see it beginning like
- 1:09:38what she gives any the right. First of all, she doesn't know
- 1:09:43that a is again counseling. So I guess that's probably why
- 1:09:46she's saving her right in the first place.
- 1:09:48If she doesn't like kill her immediately, she fucks with her.
- 1:09:50Okay, she's just chases her. If she doesn't fuck with her
- 1:09:53that's kind of popping with her that she like she drops her.
- 1:09:55Okay. Do you not remember like she
- 1:09:58drops her off and then she like, I think I'm remembering this
- 1:10:02fight. She like backs up.
- 1:10:03Yeah, thanks back. To yeah, basically Amy forces.
- 1:10:06Her way out of the Jeep and then she like comes back and she is
- 1:10:09her, but she doesn't give her this whole back story about why
- 1:10:12she's doing it. It's only played it on this part
- 1:10:15of the movie, feel like finally, like make it a reveal.
- 1:10:19You don't know what's happened beforehand, like Owen.
- 1:10:22The ones that we few that we've seen on screen, which of those
- 1:10:25are quick. But, you know, it just, it just
- 1:10:29is so weird to me, and it's kind of part of the problem that I
- 1:10:32have with mrs. Voorhees is it tiller in this
- 1:10:34first movie? Because it feels like her
- 1:10:36motivation, is really unclear because the whole, the whole
- 1:10:41Friday, the 13th. If you ask why people get killed
- 1:10:44because they have sex, right? That's what we experience.
- 1:10:47Has no with the Friday, the 13th series as a whole.
- 1:10:52If you have sex, you die, that's the immediate Association.
- 1:10:55I think a lot of people have it's the immediate Association I
- 1:10:58have and it makes sense when Jason comes back because that's
- 1:11:01his hard-and-fast rule with it. And this is for he says that she
- 1:11:04wants to stop the camp from opening which makes sense.
- 1:11:07You know she's got the fires you know she's got the poison water.
- 1:11:10Like all of that makes sense. But then she's the first person
- 1:11:14she kills from this new season of campers and camping is any
- 1:11:19who says that she loves kids and she really wants to be there to
- 1:11:22take care. Them.
- 1:11:23So why isn't any the final girl? You know what I mean?
- 1:11:25I thought that she was going to be the final girl.
- 1:11:28Like it's been so long since I saw this is like oh is this her?
- 1:11:31Like I I kind of thought that that was cool.
- 1:11:35Okay. So it peel off.
- 1:11:36This person that you think it's going to be the final girl.
- 1:11:39I mean, I get what you're saying, you're making good
- 1:11:41points like it's kind of silly to just, you know, kill these
- 1:11:46people who don't have the same intentions as like pass cancers
- 1:11:50like, you don't know if this person is good.
- 1:11:52If she wanted to kill Ned, this phone.
- 1:11:59It might be a little bit harsh, but definitely you should have
- 1:12:02been fired. Like, it seems like he doesn't
- 1:12:03need to work at this Camp. That's one thing.
- 1:12:05Yeah. You know what I mean?
- 1:12:06And she's like, well, Kevin Bacon is like, taking off this
- 1:12:09Sunday shoes all the way that's cool.
- 1:12:11Like, I just her motivations, feel a little unclear and I
- 1:12:16think she's so far driven by grief and it's just like they
- 1:12:21try to give her this Reason of why she's doing this killing,
- 1:12:24but it's not really consistent in.
- 1:12:26This is what is going to bring me to probably the most
- 1:12:31controversial opinion. I will share tonight, which is
- 1:12:38that I do not like the ending of this movie that that is.
- 1:12:48So I'm sorry. I woke you but that is stupid
- 1:12:51like this. Such a good?
- 1:12:53Okay, I'll okay. That everything ended if we had
- 1:12:57ended with Alice decapitating mrs.
- 1:13:01Voorhees on the beach, I would say that there's there's a
- 1:13:04character Arc there, you know what I mean?
- 1:13:06Like, it's not, it's not great. It could be flushed out more.
- 1:13:09But like we see like, you know, shit from the beginning of the
- 1:13:12movie where she's like, I don't know if I'm gonna stay or not to
- 1:13:14like, you know, I'm going to kind of hit mrs.
- 1:13:17Voorhees when she's attacking me too.
- 1:13:19I'm going to straight up top of your de tete.
- 1:13:24Like that is that's a whole character Arc.
- 1:13:26If she, if it, it ended with that, I would accept that as an
- 1:13:30ending, right? Because we've had this whole
- 1:13:33thing of, is this a paranormal issue with this Camp?
- 1:13:37Is this a realistic issue? Is there somebody that's
- 1:13:39obvious. Sabotage it, and we've had this
- 1:13:41whole like past 15-20 minute, Chase of mrs.
- 1:13:44Voorhees following Alice around the camp explaining to her.
- 1:13:47Why she's been doing the things she's been doing so we're like,
- 1:13:50okay, this is firmly rooted in reality, she's upset and she's
- 1:13:54got a reason to be, you know, probably not the best way to
- 1:13:58react but it makes sense. Yeah, in its own way.
- 1:14:03If it follows horror movie logic, right?
- 1:14:06Yeah, but then, She knows that the killer has been decapitated
- 1:14:11because she just did and she gets into a canoe to go out into
- 1:14:15the middle of the lake. And then we've got the music and
- 1:14:20this is where I wrote the note about the music because I love
- 1:14:22the music throughout. I was great, just he did such a
- 1:14:26good job at the music. It felt so intentional because
- 1:14:29you don't have these random Cuts between music, you don't have
- 1:14:31random background music. Like you have, it's all very
- 1:14:34intentional and it feels very intentional and that's including
- 1:14:36when she was like floating on the lake and you see Cops
- 1:14:39coming. And even though this is the
- 1:14:40first instance of like peaceful music, non ominous music, you
- 1:14:44have kind of a sense that something more is coming, right?
- 1:14:48And even talked about it in the behind the scenes like he was
- 1:14:50talking about, you know, I want to do this like what would be
- 1:14:54seen as a closing credit Fade Out music and like you're just
- 1:14:56waiting for the credits to roll, you know.
- 1:14:59Yeah, he said, I have a friend like they like, okay uh, you
- 1:15:02know, somebody to give enough room for And it was it was
- 1:15:10really well done and I will give it any minute and that there
- 1:15:12that would be fine. Jason jumping up, did not do
- 1:15:15anything for me other than being a cheap scare because it didn't
- 1:15:19it didn't fall into The Narrative of the movie because
- 1:15:22all of a sudden we have this child who died.
- 1:15:26What like 20 years ago was a long time like he did but he's
- 1:15:31still alive and he's jumping out of the lake and it wasn't just
- 1:15:35his mom. Or was it just his mom?
- 1:15:37Did she not know that he's still alive?
- 1:15:38Because maybe she wouldn't be doing all this if he was still
- 1:15:40alive, and it just it ruins everything that we have built up
- 1:15:46until this point, okay? Ruins it for me and I know that
- 1:15:51this is seen as one of the best moments and Horror history, but
- 1:15:55I just am like the moment itself if you take the scene on its
- 1:15:58own. Cool, it's scary.
- 1:16:00Yeah, and that's fine. And they even talk it that is
- 1:16:06seen is also in and of itself a ripoff because they talk about
- 1:16:08how they ripped it off scary. Yeah.
- 1:16:11And that's the only reason it was added eggs.
- 1:16:13They felt like they needed one final jump scare and this, I
- 1:16:15think is part of her, you know, people just hate jump-scares
- 1:16:18because they don't always make sense within the context and
- 1:16:21story of a movie. And this is one of those that,
- 1:16:23it just doesn't make sense for me because we've got this whole,
- 1:16:28this whole story that's just happened, everything has wrapped
- 1:16:30up besides, you know, her getting her final girl, you
- 1:16:33know, like I am officially safe or am I you know what I mean?
- 1:16:37Yeah, then she get the the or a mine comes from this character
- 1:16:42that we've been told is dead and we've been told that this whole
- 1:16:45movie is based on reality but suddenly maybe it's paranormal.
- 1:16:48And we know from later movies, there's definitely a mom
- 1:16:50element. I don't know.
- 1:16:51It just no, really it ruined, the emotional impact of
- 1:16:54everything for me. It just it straight up ruined
- 1:16:59it, okay? Those are actually some good
- 1:17:02ones. Okay, I guess Hearing initially
- 1:17:05that you don't like the ending of this movie.
- 1:17:08Like that is crazy for me. Because I mean, despite what you
- 1:17:12say I was so it kind of just comes out of nowhere, like, I
- 1:17:17understand that it's a ripoff of carrying like that kind of
- 1:17:21cheapens it a little bit for me that's like, the what bothers me
- 1:17:24about it? Well, it bothers me a little bit
- 1:17:27but like, I don't know man. I love that stuff like anything.
- 1:17:30Unsaid unexpected like that. My mom's don't bother me because
- 1:17:33there's only like, Many stories on the wheel.
- 1:17:35You just have to do it well on your out.
- 1:17:37And I just feel like this movie didn't necessarily do everything
- 1:17:39well, and it's on. See, I disagree.
- 1:17:41I felt like it is the top one by one.
- 1:17:44I love. I love that kind of set up.
- 1:17:46Yeah, it's a great setup that I will thoroughly enjoy watching
- 1:17:49all the time. But if I'm going to look at it
- 1:17:51through this lens, no I don't think it's effective.
- 1:17:53I don't think it necessarily deserves to be considered a
- 1:17:56classic because it just isn't done as well as it could be.
- 1:18:00And same thing with this final jump-scare moment, it could be
- 1:18:03done really well. Well, at the end of the movie,
- 1:18:05regardless of what it's being ripped off or not, it's off from
- 1:18:08but it just doesn't fit the story.
- 1:18:10Oh, okay. To be fair at the end.
- 1:18:14When she's at the hospital, she's talking to the cop and
- 1:18:18she's like what about the boy is like we didn't see a boy like
- 1:18:24they didn't. I intend for that character to
- 1:18:26come back. This was like plan as a single
- 1:18:29movie. Okay, they did have the little
- 1:18:32or case they did. No not one.
- 1:18:34They have Amelia's where they like being a shy of the way.
- 1:18:38Can you see air bubbles? So, and Mike was like, another
- 1:18:42little bit of Doubt into it, but like it's not anything concrete,
- 1:18:46like it doesn't immediately like beer it into Supernatural.
- 1:18:50Shit. Like it's like, Really, what it
- 1:18:54is is it's a jump-scare at the end, and it's a really well
- 1:18:57done. One like our old think, it's a
- 1:18:59cheap jumps are at all. I think it's really well done,
- 1:19:02and it's just kind of also there to just kind of plan a little
- 1:19:07bit about like, was that real? Like, I don't know, I just, I
- 1:19:11feel like, I feel like it, ruins what little emotion we were able
- 1:19:15to build up throughout the movie.
- 1:19:17It completely negate said. Okay, that's yeah, that's fair.
- 1:19:21It kind of does like case of what you said.
- 1:19:23Did the movie was building until it's one of those movies that if
- 1:19:28you and I were watching and it came out in 2021 and we watched
- 1:19:32it and that ending happened. You would be pissed.
- 1:19:36I've seen you have reactions to movies that have like that, do
- 1:19:40that extra like it's all good. It was executed poorly than I
- 1:19:44would probably. Wait, I'll probably hate this
- 1:19:46one. I had to it was executed poorly,
- 1:19:48but it's all about the execution.
- 1:19:50With this right here, I feel like that's kind of like when it
- 1:19:53comes out. Down to it.
- 1:19:54That's the difference between you and me with this movie.
- 1:19:56Now, you care. A lot about what?
- 1:19:58It's like beneath the surface. Like kind of what drives the
- 1:20:02movie Scooby is All Surface though.
- 1:20:04Travis exactly. You're not getting the things.
- 1:20:09I like, kind of drive you to care for these things or like,
- 1:20:12Entertain You for me. I take it for what it is and I
- 1:20:18appreciate it for what it is. I don't think it's trying to
- 1:20:20like, be like anything to eat my hat.
- 1:20:23Is doing its just trying to be a scary movie.
- 1:20:27It's ripping off some of my previous successful, scary
- 1:20:31movies and it's doing a good job.
- 1:20:35Ripping those things off like it's doing the same except for
- 1:20:39things but it's doing enough different to like set it apart,
- 1:20:44but I don't think it's doing enough different but also doing
- 1:20:46enough different. Well, that's where we disagree
- 1:20:49because I feel like it's doing a great job of all.
- 1:20:52You everything that's Student. I mean, you've brought up a lot
- 1:20:55of points like it. Yeah.
- 1:20:57It's and here's the thing, when we're going to talk about all
- 1:21:00different is the 13th movies. We're not going to do them all
- 1:21:03in order because we are, I want a burger.
- 1:21:05I slept on casts and we're not going to do what?
- 1:21:12Well, there's 12 news that we're not going to do three straight
- 1:21:16months of Friday, the 13th and just because that's who wants
- 1:21:20that. Some people want that.
- 1:21:21I don't want that do that either.
- 1:21:23We're probably going to do about one of us.
- 1:21:25So, over the next year we'll go over them.
- 1:21:27And I think in later movies, I'm going to have much more
- 1:21:30favourable opinions because they're going to be a lot more
- 1:21:32aware of what they are. That's why I love Camp because
- 1:21:35it knows what it is and this movie.
- 1:21:37I feel like it has so many great almonds, but there were so many
- 1:21:40poor elements and they just competed in a way that was not
- 1:21:43compatible for me. Well, we've gone through
- 1:21:51basically the whole movie. Do you want to do final ratings?
- 1:21:56Let me see. Let me make sure I don't have
- 1:21:57any special notes from bahat. The behind-the-scenes stuff that
- 1:22:01we launched and basically all things at 8:00 Adrian, King,
- 1:22:06made a poster for the film. Wait, what?
- 1:22:08She? Yeah, that she, when we watch
- 1:22:10the little bit with Sean Cunningham because he's got the
- 1:22:13studio in his house, which I think is kind of cool.
- 1:22:15Like, you always, he never expected all this, to take off
- 1:22:18the way it did and apparently Adrienne King.
- 1:22:20She made it. She made a poster of the film
- 1:22:22and gifted it to him and I was like, that's pretty cool.
- 1:22:25She seems on all like a fun person but that all extra was
- 1:22:31she really didn't want to come back for the second one because
- 1:22:33she was having stocking issues. Which that's how it's scary.
- 1:22:37Um, but yeah, she's he like she seemed to just really enjoy the
- 1:22:41experience for what it was and she seems like she's got a whole
- 1:22:44lot going on, you know, like making the poster.
- 1:22:47I love, I love knowing that she did that.
- 1:22:50But I also thought it was really funny because we saw some
- 1:22:54footage from them at a Comic-Con or scared.
- 1:22:59Yeah, it convention. And she did, she did a scream
- 1:23:03because she knew she was known. What she was.
- 1:23:06She was known for her scream. That's how she got hired, and I
- 1:23:08just had flashbacks to the Halloween costume contest at our
- 1:23:13favorite local Brewery where I want a screaming contest.
- 1:23:17So Adrian, King Somewhere Out There, And you are listening and
- 1:23:21you want to scream together sometime, just let me know, make
- 1:23:25it happen. I would love some, you know, it
- 1:23:28scared us. Hopefully.
- 1:23:29Yeah. Sia the conventions that I also
- 1:23:39wrote that Tom savini Anna. Tom savini looks like Julian
- 1:23:42from Trailer Park Boys and I just want I want everybody else
- 1:23:45to have that same mental picture that I have.
- 1:23:47It's important to me because he's like, he's got the hair,
- 1:23:50he's got facial. Facial hair to about sweatshirt,
- 1:23:55like maybe I have in my head. Now, I might hand Cannon, is
- 1:24:00that they Julian off of Tom savini because I bet, I bet in
- 1:24:05an alternate Trailer Park, Boys timeline.
- 1:24:08They that Julian does special effects makeup like, for, for
- 1:24:12one of them. J.
- 1:24:17Rocs like wonderful. Yeah, like you guys, especially
- 1:24:20those that make up on a chair. Passport knows?
- 1:24:23Yeah, I guess you. Mmm.
- 1:24:27Yeah, I think. The Lost Tales of Camp Blood
- 1:24:32part one. That's what we're talking about.
- 1:24:34But weird. Oh then it's a I think it's kind
- 1:24:39of like a fan mean film. So I it's each part is like I
- 1:24:44think just put into each different discs of each movie.
- 1:24:48Okay. That one came with part one and
- 1:24:49then you get the other part says as it goes on it was really
- 1:24:53weird though. I don't That's a different
- 1:24:56thing. It's like yeah it was kind of
- 1:24:59like they have some cool kills in there, probably cooler than
- 1:25:01in the first actual. Okay.
- 1:25:05Not as cool effects. I'm just saying like cooler kill
- 1:25:08Concepts. I'm not, I'm not trying to say
- 1:25:10anybody's better than Tom savini.
- 1:25:12I'm good. I'm just so.
- 1:25:14Okay, okay, okay, so now that we've had a good thorough
- 1:25:17debate. Let's see if we've changed each
- 1:25:19other's minds any and give our final hour, doing ratings out of
- 1:25:2210 instead of out of the traditional 45, because Is I
- 1:25:26have my master of science and I believe insensitivity is scales
- 1:25:30to really try and understand. if change is actually occurred with
- 1:25:37it significant, Don't be expecting any p-values for me
- 1:25:41though, because I'm happy that all right, Travis, right?
- 1:25:45Your rating of how you feel about this movie after we've
- 1:25:48talked, Okay, I got mine. All right, what's yours?
- 1:25:59You've actually convinced me to lower it, just a tad.
- 1:26:01A six out of ten, it's not much, but you made some good points.
- 1:26:05It is kind of a very surface level movie and they have wax a
- 1:26:09lot of like oh no easily, they want to things like they could
- 1:26:14have laid the ground. Better for a lot of things.
- 1:26:19But also, I feel like that's kind of in certain areas like
- 1:26:23its strong point, like it doesn't Explain everything.
- 1:26:29So you don't really know what to expect.
- 1:26:31If I mean when you see this is more, he's at the end of the
- 1:26:34movie that kind of comes out of nowhere.
- 1:26:37Like they've barely laid the groundwork for that earlier in
- 1:26:39the movie, when like the truck driver is like explaining about
- 1:26:43like the incident back in the day, but you know, Yeah.
- 1:26:48Well my rain stayed the same and so six out of ten but my
- 1:26:52reasoning is different because it's not just like oh it's
- 1:26:55better than I remembered, it's that it's got some decent, some
- 1:26:59decent jumps, some decent moments.
- 1:27:01I just feel like it's lacking in a lot of things.
- 1:27:04So same score different reasoning but our average score
- 1:27:07went down from six point five to six point.
- 1:27:09Oh, so I think we're going to call this around.
- 1:27:11Jesse, Jesse Owens, just evens and then we're gonna Gonna go on
- 1:27:17to talia's rating because, like we said, normally the first
- 1:27:20thing tell you, doesn't we start to watch a movie.
- 1:27:22Is she scratches at their door to go out?
- 1:27:25We live in an apartment, so it's not as simple as just letting
- 1:27:27her out, into our backyard. We have to put her harness on
- 1:27:30her. Sometimes her sweater if it's
- 1:27:31cold out, it's a whole thing. But for this movie, Talia
- 1:27:37actually did not scratch any amount of time.
- 1:27:40String is moving. She actually watched it.
- 1:27:43Look, watch this. She watched the beginning.
- 1:27:45I wrote it down. I wrote it down.
- 1:27:46She Watch the beginning scene with Claudette.
- 1:27:51With Claudette and her boy toy. And then she watched the dog,
- 1:27:54and then, she went to sleep, I'm dog doesn't highlight using the
- 1:27:57dog, son. Yes.
- 1:27:58After the dog was when she was done.
- 1:27:59And she slept until the very end where she started barking in her
- 1:28:03sleep and then she farted herself awake.
- 1:28:05So I'm going to taking all of that into account, I'm going to
- 1:28:08say that Talia is probably an agreement with us that it's a 6
- 1:28:11out of 10, you know, not enough to go outside but you know maybe
- 1:28:15enough to think about going outside via the book gases
- 1:28:18Greener that going on. So yes, yes.
- 1:28:21Okay, that's fair. I think.
- 1:28:22That's right. Alright.
- 1:28:24And one final thing to discuss with this movie this week, which
- 1:28:30character did you relate to the most while you were watching
- 1:28:33this me, I feel like it's got to be Kevin Bacon.
- 1:28:43I remember his name, but sugar work, he was the most chill out
- 1:28:47of them. I don't know.
- 1:28:49He was the most Well, I don't think I'm in the head.
- 1:28:56I could say house because, you know, I feel like I share a lot
- 1:29:00of characteristics with her, but I don't know.
- 1:29:02I feel like Kevin Bacon was just he wasn't that nice.
- 1:29:05Good guy. He was just like a guy that is
- 1:29:09just hanging out there. You seem like a good.
- 1:29:10Look at it and really delve into his character that much, but he
- 1:29:15was there to teach kids how to do camp and You know, not who is
- 1:29:22escape. I think that I probably related
- 1:29:28the most to I'm going to say that I related the most to the
- 1:29:36snake. Okay.
- 1:29:38But they tried to kill yeah because they never actually did
- 1:29:41kill it and everybody was just completely overreacting to it
- 1:29:43and I was kind of mentally peacing out.
- 1:29:46We were leaving the time. No, I wasn't really mentally.
- 1:29:52You know, I saw the furniture, right?
- 1:29:53And I was like, yeah. No.
- 1:29:55This isn't a place. I want to be.
- 1:29:56Okay. That's right.
- 1:30:00Any final thoughts. Um, it's not, My favorite Friday
- 1:30:04the 13th movie. I think you're right about that.
- 1:30:08It's nobody's favorite Friday. The 13th movie.
- 1:30:10I firmly believe that. Anybody who says it's their
- 1:30:13favorite Friday, the 13th movie is kidding themselves, but it's
- 1:30:17might like, you, it's much better than I remembered.
- 1:30:20It is better than I remembered it.
- 1:30:22I avoided it for such a long time, because I remember where I
- 1:30:25have this. My parents bought me this movie
- 1:30:27when I was a kid, and I was expecting Jason and I watched
- 1:30:30it, but was all in first person. So no View.
- 1:30:33Parents of the very end and no Jason, which really
- 1:30:37disappointed. Travis, I think that's
- 1:30:39everybody. I think that's everybody when
- 1:30:40they watch this. They expect Jason, they don't
- 1:30:42get Jason and they're like, oh yeah, it's not.
- 1:30:44Actually this movie that I like people like the franchise.
- 1:30:46They don't necessarily like this maybe.
- 1:30:48But I feel like I'll before I would not have recommended you
- 1:30:53like watch this if you wanted to like get the essence of by
- 1:30:56Friday the 13th, but now I got would usually say like server
- 1:31:00part 2 but I would throw it in the, you know, I feel like it
- 1:31:03This, it's good like family's the groundwork for what, to
- 1:31:07expect for the franchise. Like it's a Halloween, rip off
- 1:31:09at heart and it's that way throughout the whole series
- 1:31:12really, is it it sets itself apart enough.
- 1:31:17But, you know, I would recommend it.
- 1:31:21Well, until next time, this is what's your least favorite scary
- 1:31:25movie. I'm Jesse.
- 1:31:26I'm truss. Thanks for listening, thanks.
