- 0:00Speaker 1: This is where country music comes alive.
- 0:03Speaker 2: All right, you ready?
- 0:04Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 0:04Speaker 1: From Nashville's biggest headlines to country music's biggest headliners. Come on.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You're getting an inside look at the stories behind the
- 0:12Speaker 1: songs and the artists behind the music.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Let's go backstage and inside country. Stand by.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Two, one. Let's go.
- 0:20Speaker 2: With Wayne Dee.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Hey!
- 0:25Speaker 2: Uh, Dustin freaking Lynch, my boy. What's going down?
- 0:29Speaker 5: Man, not much. Sitting here loving life, getting to talk
- 0:32Speaker 5: about new music, hanging with y'all.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Dude, how have things been? Because it's been... I feel
- 0:37Speaker 3: like I haven't talked to you in years.
- 0:39Speaker 2: It has been a while.
- 0:41Speaker 4: Man, it's wonderful.
- 0:43Speaker 5: I'm packing a lot of adventure and life into the
- 0:47Speaker 5: short calendar year we are given.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Dude, I gotta ask, before I even dive into the music, uh,
- 0:54Speaker 3: a time we talked a couple of years ago, you
- 0:55Speaker 3: had brought up this big old property that you bought
- 0:58Speaker 3: and you were so proud of it. And it's like
- 1:00Speaker 3: your little piece of heaven. And it's kind of where
- 1:02Speaker 3: you would go to escape. Uh, what has you working
- 1:06Speaker 3: so hard when you could, you know, enjoy the hits
- 1:08Speaker 3: you got, put out a song here or there and
- 1:10Speaker 3: just enjoy the land.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Yeah, man, that's such a great question.
- 1:14Speaker 5: And something I've continued to wrestle with and balance, um,
- 1:20Speaker 5: I've just realized that as I go through life, saying
- 1:23Speaker 5: yes to opportunities is what makes me happy and good
- 1:27Speaker 5: things happen. And it brings me to new people and
- 1:31Speaker 5: new relationships, which equal new memories. And, you know, that's
- 1:35Speaker 5: all we can take with us is the fun and journey.
- 1:38Speaker 5: I'm still addicted to.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Great songs. I'm addicted to finding them. I'm addicted to
- 1:45Speaker 4: writing them.
- 1:46Speaker 5: And, you know, a great idea and trying to figure
- 1:49Speaker 5: out how to make it come to life in a
- 1:50Speaker 5: new way. And I think that's what really powers my
- 1:55Speaker 5: engine is just being a bit of an addict to
- 2:00Speaker 5: writing songs and writing country music and singing it.
- 2:03Speaker 3: The other thing I'll tell you, which might have never
- 2:05Speaker 3: been brought up in an interview with you before, from
- 2:08Speaker 3: the day I met you back when I worked in Vegas,
- 2:10Speaker 3: I feel like you haven't aged a day. And the
- 2:13Speaker 3: gray is so fierce on my beard. You're going to
- 2:14Speaker 3: have to give me some, some tips or something at
- 2:17Speaker 3: some point.
- 2:18Speaker 5: No, I feel like I have, dude, I'm starting to like, man,
- 2:21Speaker 5: bouncing back from workouts or surfing or anything like that is,
- 2:25Speaker 5: is definitely not as easy as it once was. You know,
- 2:28Speaker 5: there's more, there's more stiff necks in the morning than
- 2:31Speaker 5: there ever has been.
- 2:34Speaker 3: It's that old man thing. It creeps in whether you
- 2:36Speaker 3: want it to or not, man. Uh, you just said
- 2:39Speaker 3: an interesting word relationships. You were a guy who has
- 2:42Speaker 3: been very successful in Nashville for a lot of years.
- 2:45Speaker 2: And then you picked up the DJ work.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Um, and then we were doing the, we were doing the, uh,
- 2:51Speaker 3: the pool situation that was added to the, the wheel
- 2:54Speaker 3: that is Dustin Lynch. But you said relationships, what are
- 2:58Speaker 3: some ones two part questions, some ones that you hold
- 3:00Speaker 3: very close to you and which ones are surprised you'd like,
- 3:05Speaker 3: Oh wow. I'm really close with, and I don't even
- 3:07Speaker 3: need like a big old name, right? But what are
- 3:09Speaker 3: relationships that mean the most and which ones surprise you that, like, wow,
- 3:13Speaker 3: I can't believe I have a relationship with this person
- 3:16Speaker 3: because I wouldn't have?
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. The ones I keep close to me are
- 3:20Speaker 4: those that.
- 3:22Speaker 5: Can be honest with me and aren't yes men, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 5: can kind of check me when I need checking, which
- 3:32Speaker 5: is great. You know, I feel like the team I
- 3:34Speaker 5: have around me here in Nashville, we've.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Kind of gravitated towards those people. you know, it's good.
- 3:39Speaker 5: It's a team effort of like, can't always see every
- 3:43Speaker 5: angle of what we're doing and, and how we're, um,
- 3:46Speaker 5: you know, just how we're going about things.
- 3:48Speaker 4: So that's great.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Um, but, but more of like the close friend circle too, um,
- 3:53Speaker 5: which I have and I'm, and I keep, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 5: strategically tight and small. Um, and then like the, the unexpected,
- 4:01Speaker 5: it's just, you know, getting to do life, um, in
- 4:04Speaker 5: so many places because of country music and going on tour, Um,
- 4:08Speaker 5: it's put myself in different cities and I have friends
- 4:11Speaker 5: all over the country and, um, yeah, some are really famous. Um,
- 4:16Speaker 5: some aren't, but, uh, you know, it's, it's, that's the
- 4:20Speaker 5: blessing of getting to tour, um, at this level is,
- 4:23Speaker 5: is we've got to, we've got to go to towns
- 4:26Speaker 5: and cities that are not really on the menu of, Hey,
- 4:29Speaker 5: I would save up to go to vacation here for
- 4:31Speaker 5: a week. Um, and I've made some great lifelong friends
- 4:34Speaker 5: in those towns and places. And, um, And then, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 5: outside of music, my hunting adventures and fishing have taken
- 4:41Speaker 5: me to a lot of cool places.
- 4:42Speaker 4: And I've met a lot of cool people through that, too.
- 4:46Speaker 3: You talked about having people that aren't yes men in
- 4:49Speaker 3: your corner. With what you're doing, with what you do
- 4:55Speaker 3: being just as much art as anything else, you are
- 4:57Speaker 3: putting more feeling and emotion into what you create than
- 5:00Speaker 3: a lot of people just showing up to work every day.
- 5:03Speaker 3: who who's in that small circle and again doesn't need
- 5:06Speaker 3: to be names or anybody famous or it could be
- 5:08Speaker 3: you know family yeah who are the people in that
- 5:10Speaker 3: circle that can truly.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Tell you hey this isn't this isn't as awesome as you.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Think it is yeah yeah absolutely.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Uh and and you take that without it you know
- 5:21Speaker 3: maybe i don't want to say hurting your feelings but
- 5:23Speaker 3: for a lack of a better phrase you know rubbing
- 5:25Speaker 3: you wrong yeah i.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Think through the years of of creating in nashville um
- 5:31Speaker 5: that's who i end up and all of us artists,
- 5:33Speaker 5: I think end up working with because it is a
- 5:35Speaker 5: collaborative effort, you know, and, and for me, it's my producers,
- 5:39Speaker 5: my songwriters, you know, it's important in a songwriting room
- 5:43Speaker 5: to have a co-writer that's not like, Oh, that's great, dude.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Cause you know, they could, and obviously their goal is
- 5:49Speaker 5: to get a song recorded by you. Um, but the
- 5:52Speaker 5: greats aren't just agreeing to get a song that you like.
- 5:56Speaker 5: The greats are looking for a great song. Um, and
- 5:59Speaker 5: then my producers, like there's, You know, saying yes in
- 6:03Speaker 5: songs that end up on the album, just as important
- 6:07Speaker 5: as that is saying no for the right reasons. You know,
- 6:09Speaker 5: there's certain, you know, and I've watched very closely the
- 6:14Speaker 5: guys ahead of me in career that start with, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 5: the 90s guys all the way up now through guys
- 6:22Speaker 5: I've opened for and are touring and still touring. I watch,
- 6:27Speaker 5: you know, there's certain subject matter as we go through
- 6:30Speaker 5: life that, maybe it doesn't make sense, you know, whenever
- 6:33Speaker 5: you're approaching 50 years old, like some, you know, some
- 6:37Speaker 5: buddies I've toured with, they can't sing about what they
- 6:40Speaker 5: were singing about 10, 15 years ago.
- 6:41Speaker 4: And it feel organic, you know, and feel natural.
- 6:45Speaker 5: So, um, yeah, just having those, having those people on
- 6:49Speaker 5: your sideline, that's like, Hey, subject matter wise, you know,
- 6:52Speaker 5: we've kind of beat this subject matter up a lot
- 6:55Speaker 5: over the past 10 years.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Let's lean away from that. You know what I mean?
- 7:00Speaker 5: Without going into the weeds too deep, that's who I'm
- 7:02Speaker 5: talking about, you know? And, um, cause there's, there can
- 7:05Speaker 5: be a great song for somebody else that I've already sang,
- 7:09Speaker 5: you know?
- 7:10Speaker 4: And it's like, well, we could do that, but you know,
- 7:12Speaker 4: you have this one over here.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Um, so yeah, it's, uh, from that all the way
- 7:18Speaker 5: to like how we do music videos and present the
- 7:21Speaker 5: visuals on tour. Um, just as important as the songs too.
- 7:27Speaker 3: You bring up an interesting thing and, uh, about songs
- 7:31Speaker 3: that don't fit you and maybe you like, but it's like, no, that's,
- 7:37Speaker 3: that definitely doesn't feel like where I'm at now. And
- 7:39Speaker 3: I think that's such a hard thing. I'm listening at
- 7:41Speaker 3: the end of the day, I have no music ability.
- 7:43Speaker 3: I'm just a fan and I'm lucky enough to do
- 7:46Speaker 3: what I do, but to hear stories about songs and
- 7:49Speaker 3: to like almost be taken in the writer's room with,
- 7:51Speaker 3: with some of the stories we've heard, um, You mentioned
- 7:54Speaker 3: songs that you've ended up passing on or didn't fit,
- 7:59Speaker 3: so they went to somebody else. Some amazing stories have
- 8:02Speaker 3: come out of stuff like that. Like Jake Owen was
- 8:05Speaker 3: offered Big Green Tractor. It ended up being something he
- 8:08Speaker 3: passed on. That's like a Jason Eldeen staple now. Kenny
- 8:14Speaker 3: Chesney passed on Check Yes or No. And now that's,
- 8:18Speaker 3: you know, could you imagine somebody recording that other than
- 8:21Speaker 3: George Strait?
- 8:22Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 8:23Speaker 5: You know, songs, I think they're meant to be, their
- 8:26Speaker 5: timing is, you know, it's very divine, I think.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:32Speaker 5: When it comes to country music and songs finding not
- 8:37Speaker 5: only the artist, but finding an airwave when they do,
- 8:41Speaker 5: you know. And you think about how many, I think
- 8:44Speaker 5: about how many songs... have impacted my life as a
- 8:48Speaker 5: country music fan. I feel a little selfish just saying this,
- 8:51Speaker 5: but after Cowboys and Angels came out, I.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Was like, whoa, a song I wrote can do this.
- 8:58Speaker 5: You know, I like hearing the stories that meet and
- 9:00Speaker 5: greet and stuff still today of what that song has
- 9:02Speaker 5: meant to somebody.
- 9:03Speaker 4: It blows me away. And, and I don't take that.
- 9:06Speaker 5: I don't take that lightly with the timing of anything
- 9:09Speaker 5: that's happened in my career.
- 9:11Speaker 3: With that, before I jump into the album real quick,
- 9:13Speaker 3: what is a song that you have been like, this
- 9:16Speaker 3: ain't for me. This has got to be for somebody else.
- 9:19Speaker 3: But later you heard, and it took off for them.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Well, the first one that ever came to be that
- 9:27Speaker 5: I was like, oh, this is going to be my
- 9:29Speaker 5: first album.
- 9:29Speaker 4: It's crazy.
- 9:31Speaker 5: But I've always tried to push.
- 9:34Speaker 4: The envelope a little bit.
- 9:36Speaker 5: Um and not always made fans through that uh but
- 9:40Speaker 5: is uh but the one the first one that that
- 9:42Speaker 5: happened was red solo cup.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Toby keith oh wow.
- 9:47Speaker 5: And uh that went on to be double platinum just
- 9:49Speaker 5: boom i don't think it got much radio.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Airplay but dude whatever happened to that song.
- 9:54Speaker 5: Yeah so uh that was that was the first one
- 9:56Speaker 5: that's kind of like timeless in my opinion.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Dude but what, but again, right.
- 10:01Speaker 3: It didn't fit you at the time, but what a
- 10:02Speaker 3: bad-ass story that like is a part of who you
- 10:05Speaker 3: are forever now, even though you didn't record it. Right.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 5: And I would not have even got it close. You know,
- 10:11Speaker 5: Toby's Toby's delivery and the verses on that only Toby
- 10:14Speaker 5: Keith could do, you know, it was meant for him,
- 10:19Speaker 5: not me.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Clean Slate is the name of the album. It's going
- 10:23Speaker 2: to be here before you know it.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Clean Slate feels like there are titles, and there's something
- 10:30Speaker 3: about this that feels more of a statement.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Was that intentional?
- 10:34Speaker 4: It was, yeah.
- 10:35Speaker 5: I don't know if a statement was intentional, but there
- 10:38Speaker 5: is some weight behind this album title. Past album titles,
- 10:45Speaker 5: just trying to put a ribbon on what it is
- 10:48Speaker 5: of that chapter of music. But Clean Slate is It's
- 10:51Speaker 5: a very powerful song on this album, and it's what
- 10:56Speaker 5: I needed to hear, what I needed to get behind
- 11:00Speaker 5: and sing, and a message that I love. And that's
- 11:04Speaker 5: why I wanted to go with this title. And it's
- 11:08Speaker 5: forever going to remind me of this chapter of life
- 11:11Speaker 5: that was.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Exciting.
- 11:14Speaker 5: It was a little scary, but with a clean page
- 11:18Speaker 5: in front of me, I'm the author, and that's also
- 11:21Speaker 5: just awesome to have that. And I think we all
- 11:24Speaker 5: can take a moment each year or each month, however
- 11:27Speaker 5: you want to break your year down or your life
- 11:29Speaker 5: down and go, okay, that's behind me.
- 11:33Speaker 4: What's in front? Let's ride it. And that keeps me going.
- 11:36Speaker 4: It's fun.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I love the way you worded that, and that's something
- 11:40Speaker 3: that I fall short on. you know, 360 days.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Of the year. There's a couple of days where it
- 11:46Speaker 2: might work out, but at the end of the day,
- 11:48Speaker 2: you are your own author.
- 11:49Speaker 4: That's it.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Clean slate, blank page. Have you felt that way? Or
- 11:52Speaker 3: did you have to learn to think like that?
- 11:55Speaker 5: I've had to learn to think like that, man. I,
- 11:56Speaker 5: you know, as, as many decisions that, um, come along
- 12:00Speaker 5: with being an artist and a songwriter and, um, you know, and,
- 12:07Speaker 5: and there's a lot of, there's a lot of people
- 12:09Speaker 5: involved in my career and through the years, um, You
- 12:13Speaker 5: go through the ups and downs. I think everybody does,
- 12:16Speaker 5: but in the music industry, there's a lot of ups
- 12:18Speaker 5: and downs. It's just a rollercoaster ride.
- 12:20Speaker 4: All of us have it in this industry. It's why
- 12:22Speaker 4: we love it.
- 12:24Speaker 5: But I found myself getting stuck a little bit in
- 12:28Speaker 5: a rut of blaming other people and harping on the
- 12:33Speaker 5: past and a few different things.
- 12:37Speaker 4: It's like, nah, man. What's next, right?
- 12:41Speaker 5: You can't worry about the game that you lost last season.
- 12:47Speaker 5: I'm just speaking metaphorically, but.
- 12:50Speaker 4: What's exciting is what's coming. That's so cool. I'll tell
- 12:56Speaker 4: you right now, I'm really excited for what's to come.
- 12:59Speaker 5: I've not been this psyched up and full of creativity
- 13:03Speaker 5: and energy in a long time. I'm still writing and
- 13:06Speaker 5: recording right now, this week, so Uh, it's, it's just, it's, it's,
- 13:11Speaker 5: I'm loving life. I'm loving making music. I hope that
- 13:13Speaker 5: comes off on this album. Um, we had so much
- 13:16Speaker 5: fun making it and I hope, uh, hope everybody can
- 13:18Speaker 5: feel that.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I can tell, uh, in interacting with you and the
- 13:22Speaker 3: millions of times that we've probably caught up, there's something,
- 13:26Speaker 3: there's something different in the smile about this.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Music that you're giving us right now.
- 13:29Speaker 3: I can tell that this one's going to hit real
- 13:32Speaker 3: special for you once people get ahold of it, man.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Congrats to you for that.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Thank you so much.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Yeah, man. I, uh, you know, we've already released a
- 13:38Speaker 5: couple songs and, I've already seen them kind of pop
- 13:42Speaker 5: off on their own, so I'm stoked to get the
- 13:44Speaker 5: rest of it out there.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Listen, the success is well-deserved, man.
- 13:47Speaker 3: I hope you never deal with imposter syndrome because, man,
- 13:50Speaker 3: you've always been genuine.
- 13:51Speaker 2: You've always worked your ass off.
- 13:53Speaker 3: And from my side of the country music world, it's...
- 13:56Speaker 3: we could never have enough Dustin Lynch, man.
- 13:58Speaker 2: So keep, keep going.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Thank you, brother. I'll see, see you.
