- 1:49People tell your friends,
- 1:50tell your family all of that.
- 1:52They're Shanna.
- 1:54And we got Yuki, what?
- 1:57I think that is Denise Moore,
- 1:59and she has just changed her name.
- 2:04So, and with us today,
- 2:07we have Tristan Patrick, head coach,
- 2:10Ascend athlete.
- 2:13Yes.
- 2:14And good friend.
- 2:17We've been hanging out for the last couple
- 2:18of years at the games and different
- 2:20events.
- 2:21You are a coach of elite athletes.
- 2:25What's going on, brother?
- 2:27Living the life, dude.
- 2:28Qualifier season is in full swing,
- 2:30so people have been doing TFX qualifiers,
- 2:34Fittest of the Coast.
- 2:35Got Jacob getting ready to go to Crash
- 2:37this weekend and getting ready to go
- 2:41celebrate my wife and I's first wedding
- 2:43anniversary this weekend.
- 2:45So where are you heading?
- 2:46We're going to go out past Austin.
- 2:48We're going to go glamping.
- 2:52have you heard of glamping i am aware
- 2:54of yeah so never have secluded area half
- 3:00tent half uh modern amenities uh my wife
- 3:04very much likes having showers and air
- 3:06conditioning and those things but we're
- 3:08just gonna go get away for a couple
- 3:10days take the dog just relax
- 3:13Yeah,
- 3:14my wife and I tried camping one time,
- 3:17and she made it abundantly clear that that
- 3:20would be the last time we tried camping.
- 3:23Yeah, Courtney went camping with me once,
- 3:27and I grew up in northwestern New Mexico,
- 3:30so camping there is great.
- 3:32You go to Colorado, it's beautiful,
- 3:34it's cool, it's amazing.
- 3:36we went camping with some friends down
- 3:38here in east texas not so great not
- 3:42so cool lots of bugs uh wife was
- 3:46not thrilled but camping is not for the
- 3:50faint of heart yeah so i've i'm determined
- 3:54to eventually get her to go camping again
- 3:57but it'll be out in i'll take her
- 3:59to like new mexico or colorado or
- 4:01somewhere where it's good camping
- 4:03It's funny because my daughter moved to
- 4:05Montana earlier this year,
- 4:07and they go camping like every other
- 4:09weekend.
- 4:10Yeah, it's probably great.
- 4:11Right?
- 4:11They go into the mountains.
- 4:12They go by the lake.
- 4:14They go paddle boarding.
- 4:15They do all the stuff.
- 4:16They take the dogs,
- 4:18and they have a blast.
- 4:20But it has snowed twice there already.
- 4:23Dang.
- 4:25So it looks like the weekends of camping
- 4:28are all over.
- 4:28Yeah, probably.
- 4:30Yeah.
- 4:31Joseph says,
- 4:32all you need for camping is a good
- 4:34bottle of tequila.
- 4:37I mean,
- 4:37that definitely can make it a better
- 4:39experience.
- 4:40Yes, Corey, you're right.
- 4:41Glamping is camping for bougie people.
- 4:45I think what's happened is YouTube is
- 4:46trying this thing where they're showing
- 4:48your username instead of your real name
- 4:50now.
- 4:51Oh, maybe.
- 4:53Yeah.
- 4:53It happened on like a couple months ago,
- 4:56and now I'm getting hit by it.
- 4:58Interesting.
- 4:58That's why we have Yuki Zazie,
- 5:00and I don't have Joseph's first name up
- 5:02on the board.
- 5:03Now I'm going to have to remember
- 5:04everybody's name, which is crazy.
- 5:05Yeah, it'll be fun.
- 5:12I'm excited.
- 5:13Yeah, good times.
- 5:15So let's talk.
- 5:20Again,
- 5:20these friends with episodes are just us
- 5:23shooting the shit.
- 5:24We're just going to shoot the shit.
- 5:25But recently you made the news.
- 5:30Hattie Kenyo was on Glidden Things.
- 5:33And she announced that she had left your
- 5:37coaching expertise to try something new.
- 5:41You were in the chat at the time.
- 5:43You have a friend named Corey who's kind
- 5:45of an asshole.
- 5:48In the chat,
- 5:49he said that you were put in the
- 5:52friend zone.
- 5:54I mean, it kind of feels like that,
- 5:56right?
- 5:57No, it's kidding.
- 6:01To be clear,
- 6:02there was no romantic implications in that
- 6:06at all.
- 6:06And Corey wasn't making that implication.
- 6:09But it's got to feel at some point
- 6:11like you've worked with this individual
- 6:13for a long time.
- 6:15You finally get her to the CrossFit Games,
- 6:17and then she wants to try something new.
- 6:20It's got to be a gut punch at
- 6:22least a little bit.
- 6:23Sure.
- 6:24Yeah.
- 6:24I mean, it definitely, I mean,
- 6:27I didn't love it.
- 6:29Right.
- 6:30I think, I mean,
- 6:33you know me pretty well at this point.
- 6:35I'm pretty logical with most of my thought
- 6:39processes and things like that.
- 6:40And something I've actually said for
- 6:42years,
- 6:43I've joked with about with my wife before
- 6:46and our other coaches is every athlete you
- 6:49ever coach will fire you.
- 6:53For one reason or another,
- 6:54the day will come where...
- 6:56It could be for retirement.
- 6:58It could be for another coach.
- 7:00It could be whatever.
- 7:02And as a coach,
- 7:03I want it to be retirement.
- 7:06I want it to be I'm stepping away.
- 7:09I want it to be whatever.
- 7:11But it's an inevitable eventuality that at
- 7:17some point,
- 7:17it's going to be I think I need
- 7:19to go somewhere else to get what I
- 7:22need, right?
- 7:24uh so like it sucks but it was
- 7:26bound to happen eventually i think um
- 7:30obviously this is for me the kind of
- 7:32first time this has happened um but at
- 7:35the end of the day like and i
- 7:37told hattie this when we talked she needs
- 7:39to do what she thinks is best for
- 7:40her obviously i would have loved to
- 7:43continue to work with her and help her
- 7:46keep chasing down her games goals and
- 7:48things like that but
- 7:51I understand.
- 7:51Like, I get it.
- 7:52Right?
- 7:54So, kind of stinks for sure.
- 7:56But, I mean,
- 7:57I have nothing but love for Hattie.
- 7:59Like, we had a hell of a ride.
- 8:00I think...
- 8:02I don't have a ton of like, gee,
- 8:07I wish I would've like,
- 8:09of course you look back in hindsight and
- 8:11there's things you could have done better
- 8:13things you didn't know at the time,
- 8:15you know, whatnot, all of that stuff.
- 8:18But I'm super proud of the work that
- 8:22she was able to do.
- 8:24And we were able to do together.
- 8:27Um,
- 8:28and I hope that she has continued success.
- 8:32So there's some questions in the chat I
- 8:34want to bring up, but this one first.
- 8:37I'm not kind of,
- 8:39I am one hundred percent.
- 8:44So if people don't recall,
- 8:47you kind of got into individual coaching
- 8:50when Kelly Baker wanted to make a run.
- 8:53Yes.
- 8:54You got her to the games.
- 8:55Yes.
- 8:56She fires you because she wants to start
- 8:58a family.
- 8:59Selfish.
- 9:00Completely different reason.
- 9:02And in fact,
- 9:02she has been very successful in that
- 9:04endeavor.
- 9:05Yes, she has.
- 9:06Right.
- 9:07So now she's a mother and she's moved
- 9:09on with and it's and it's really cool.
- 9:12As you were working with Kelly,
- 9:13you had a group of athletes kind of
- 9:15come to you.
- 9:15And one of those was Hattie.
- 9:18Um,
- 9:18and so you started working with her and
- 9:20you get her to the games.
- 9:22Does it get any easier as you move
- 9:24forward or is it,
- 9:25is it tough every time an athlete's like,
- 9:28I need to take a step back?
- 9:32Oh, or is it different for each athlete?
- 9:38I think it's different for each athlete.
- 9:41like with kelly b it was i mean
- 9:45we did the thing like we we did
- 9:48the thing and the next chapter was always
- 9:52probably going to be different um with
- 9:56hattie it was like okay we got there
- 9:59and then we got there again after a
- 10:02rough and tumble kind of year.
- 10:05And I didn't necessarily expect that to
- 10:07end.
- 10:08Right.
- 10:09So a little bit different for sure.
- 10:12And I think it's different with,
- 10:13with all athletes,
- 10:14even athletes that I coach who are not
- 10:16games athletes and are semifinals athletes
- 10:19or quarterfinals athletes.
- 10:20And they decide to leave for one reason
- 10:23or they have to leave.
- 10:24I think it's different because each
- 10:26relationship with each athlete is
- 10:28different.
- 10:31So I know the answer to this,
- 10:32but I'm going to ask it for Jody.
- 10:34Did you coach her when she was in
- 10:35Bali?
- 10:36Yes.
- 10:37Yeah, the last time she was in Bali,
- 10:40I was coaching her.
- 10:44So I always ask you a question almost
- 10:47every time we talk.
- 10:48You're probably sick of me saying it.
- 10:51But in light of what's happened,
- 10:52I want to ask it again.
- 10:54I know what this question is.
- 10:57So...
- 10:59In management classes,
- 11:00they describe managers as two types of
- 11:02people.
- 11:03And that is,
- 11:05are you the person that likes to build
- 11:08the thing from scratch?
- 11:11Or are you the person that likes to
- 11:12polish the talent that's already there?
- 11:17And so I've asked you that question a
- 11:19million times.
- 11:20And I think it's been a fluid answer.
- 11:22I think it is, yeah.
- 11:24Depending on where you are.
- 11:25So at this point...
- 11:28Where do you put yourself as?
- 11:30Are you the builder of the talent or
- 11:33the polisher of the talent?
- 11:39I think I'm probably still better equipped
- 11:46to build the talent.
- 11:50I think if you look now, granted,
- 11:54I haven't.
- 11:55Like Hattie went to the games once she
- 11:57went was our year.
- 11:59It was obviously crazy.
- 12:00She made it back last year or this
- 12:02year.
- 12:03Placement wasn't quite as good as the year
- 12:05prior, all of those things.
- 12:08I think it's,
- 12:09I think you have to have a lot
- 12:12of time to continue to polish something
- 12:16almost, if that makes sense.
- 12:18Um,
- 12:21but I think my interpretation of just
- 12:24visually watching you over the years,
- 12:25right?
- 12:25Sure.
- 12:27I think you're really good at building it.
- 12:31You haven't had the opportunity to polish
- 12:32it.
- 12:34And that, and that may be true.
- 12:36I also even, and you could ask the,
- 12:39like the onsite athletes that we have down
- 12:40here in Houston,
- 12:41who I see train multiple times a week.
- 12:45And I mean, you could ask,
- 12:47you could get some good stories out of
- 12:48Jacob too.
- 12:50Uh,
- 12:51I think my disposition is probably
- 12:54naturally more of the kind of person who
- 12:58can build.
- 13:03I very much will try to pull it
- 13:09out of people in a positive way in
- 13:13training, but also in a direct way.
- 13:19And I think part of that comes from
- 13:20my time in the military and things like
- 13:23that.
- 13:26It's almost like the scene from Armageddon
- 13:32where they're all going to flight school
- 13:34and the pilot instructor is like,
- 13:37I'm going to twist you and I'm going
- 13:39to do whatever.
- 13:40That is a lot of how I operate.
- 13:45It's a very positive environment.
- 13:48but you're going to go through it.
- 13:50But I know that that's what you need
- 13:52to do to reach where you want to
- 13:54go.
- 13:55And I know what kind of hammers to
- 13:58use at what times for that kind of
- 14:01building or like forging process.
- 14:04I think it's also more fun.
- 14:08I mean,
- 14:10we had an athlete doing the TFX qualifiers
- 14:13who was a,
- 14:15he's been trying to make pro for a
- 14:16little while and they had an event,
- 14:18one of the workouts that ended on like,
- 14:21like a, like a, like a, like a,
- 14:22like a, like a, like a, like a,
- 14:25like a, like a, like a, like a,
- 14:27like a, like a, like a,
- 14:45Like, I don't care.
- 14:46Find a way to go faster.
- 14:48And one of my other athletes came up
- 14:50to me.
- 14:50It was like, you said that.
- 14:51And I was like, whoa.
- 14:53It was like, yeah,
- 14:55like I'm pulling it out of him.
- 14:57Find a way to go faster.
- 14:59It's a fifty pound dumbbell.
- 15:00You deadlift like six hundred pounds.
- 15:02Figure it out.
- 15:03Right.
- 15:04So I think my disposition might be
- 15:07naturally toward what you have kind of
- 15:09said from day one.
- 15:13But.
- 15:14I'd like to polish some more, right?
- 15:16Well,
- 15:17and I'm going to say this because I
- 15:19don't want you to have to make excuses,
- 15:20right?
- 15:21Sure.
- 15:23Kelly Baker's goal was to make it to
- 15:24the games.
- 15:26You did that.
- 15:28She then retires to become a mom,
- 15:31and you really never had the opportunity
- 15:32to take her a step further.
- 15:35She was on the brink of top twenty.
- 15:37Mm-hmm.
- 15:38Right.
- 15:39Truly,
- 15:39she was top twenty because someone
- 15:41withdrew and it just happened at a weird
- 15:44time.
- 15:44And yeah,
- 15:45but she didn't really get credit for it.
- 15:46Right.
- 15:47Right.
- 15:49And you never got the opportunity to
- 15:50polish it for the next season.
- 15:53Hattie, you have the wild,
- 15:56wacky Lazar death situation that isn't
- 15:59even – it makes it hard to even
- 16:02judge how that game's went.
- 16:04And then at Guadalupalooza,
- 16:06she injures herself,
- 16:07and you have no training time between then
- 16:11and this year's games,
- 16:13and you still get her back,
- 16:14but you didn't really get the chance to
- 16:16polish it.
- 16:17You were just in survival mode for the
- 16:20season.
- 16:21Very much so, no.
- 16:22And when I finished the second piece of
- 16:24the documentary,
- 16:25you'll see that is what was happening.
- 16:29This year's games turned into survival
- 16:31mode because of everything she'd been
- 16:34through throughout the year.
- 16:37And then people like Jacob,
- 16:39you haven't hit the first goal yet.
- 16:41You're still in the building process.
- 16:44You need to get him to the games.
- 16:48And so I don't think you've had the
- 16:50opportunity to polish.
- 16:53Yeah,
- 16:54and I think probably if we went back
- 16:56through all the different coaches' resumes
- 17:01or not resumes, but I guess just history,
- 17:04they probably had a time where they were
- 17:06building more than they were polishing.
- 17:08And then they got people there
- 17:10consistently and they figured out that
- 17:12kind of side of things.
- 17:13Or they came in super early and had
- 17:15an athlete make it and then continue to
- 17:18make it as the field got harder.
- 17:20So they were kind of polishing as they
- 17:21went.
- 17:22versus having to build an athlete in the
- 17:25modern era where it's a little,
- 17:28it's just more competitive, right?
- 17:31So I think it's probably a natural
- 17:33evolution.
- 17:36Dan Church,
- 17:37his knives keep getting stolen before he
- 17:39gets to sharpen them.
- 17:41That's funny.
- 17:44So on another note,
- 17:45we've hit that to death.
- 17:47Don't need to keep dwelling on it.
- 17:49WFP.
- 17:50WFP.
- 17:52If I am accurate,
- 17:55none of your athletes participated in WFP.
- 17:59No.
- 18:01Madison McElhaney did one of the
- 18:02qualifiers at the very beginning of the
- 18:03year.
- 18:05And that was it.
- 18:07Was that a strategic decision on your part
- 18:10or just circumstances led to that?
- 18:13She just wanted to give it a rip
- 18:14and see.
- 18:16Yeah,
- 18:16but your other athletes did not
- 18:17participate.
- 18:19Was it strategic or was it just...
- 18:21They have no interest.
- 18:26Okay.
- 18:29I'm not going to make them do something
- 18:31they don't want to do,
- 18:32especially if they have to do another
- 18:34qualifier on top of the qualifiers that
- 18:37are already required during that time of
- 18:39the year, training.
- 18:44Why would I...
- 18:46if you don't do the whole season,
- 18:47it's not a ton of a point as
- 18:50far as I understand it points wise and
- 18:53things like that.
- 18:54So I didn't really push anybody to do
- 18:58it if they didn't have interest already.
- 19:04You are knee deep in the semifinal level
- 19:07athletes.
- 19:07Um,
- 19:09you've taken them and you've built them to
- 19:11games athletes.
- 19:14Is there, is there, uh,
- 19:16a way of looking at WFP that you
- 19:19think is beneficial for those athletes?
- 19:21Or do you think because of the qualifiers
- 19:23and when they fall,
- 19:25it just isn't conducive for that level of
- 19:28athlete to use as a buildup?
- 19:37It's just at the wrong damn time of
- 19:38the year, man.
- 19:43It's logistics.
- 19:44Yeah, it's just logistics.
- 19:46It's good for athletes who are semifinals
- 19:49level or trying to breach semifinals
- 19:51level.
- 19:52to get off-season competition experience,
- 19:55get reps at things.
- 19:57That's why TFX, Fittest of the Coast,
- 19:59Wadapalooza,
- 19:59that's why those places get attendance
- 20:01from that level of athlete,
- 20:03and it's always kind of on the calendar.
- 20:05But their qualifier is just before or just
- 20:09after the Open,
- 20:10which will be right around...
- 20:13quarterfinals this year it's just
- 20:14logistically if it's not an athlete's
- 20:17number one it's not going to make sense
- 20:19for them to do logistically because you're
- 20:21going to have to put something else as
- 20:23a secondary priority right and
- 20:28I heard James Sprague talk about this on
- 20:33Boys Interrupted that because of the way
- 20:36the season went this year,
- 20:38he couldn't get a cycle in,
- 20:42like a strength cycle in that fit within
- 20:45the year because he was always competing.
- 20:48Mm-hmm.
- 20:50If this is maintained forward,
- 20:54are athletes going to fall apart because
- 20:57they don't have the time to build?
- 20:59It's just going to be sustained.
- 21:05Or am I just wrong?
- 21:06Like Carolyn Prevo would tell me,
- 21:08I don't train to build.
- 21:09I train to be fit all year round.
- 21:12But then you're not getting better.
- 21:16right so like that's the that's like the
- 21:20so you can you say i'm gonna do
- 21:24all these things and then you're basically
- 21:28just running from peak to peak or trying
- 21:31to hold a peak as long as you
- 21:32can so then you're you're not really
- 21:35training and then you're kind of at that
- 21:37like trying to hold a peak for a
- 21:38long time is where you get like the
- 21:40injury risk right
- 21:42Or you say, I'm just going to,
- 21:44I'm going to maintenance is what the
- 21:46programming talk is.
- 21:47I'm going to maintenance all year.
- 21:48I'm just going to hold my level of
- 21:49fitness and I'm going to maintenance and
- 21:53do all these competitions.
- 21:55Well, it's fine.
- 21:55You might get marginally fitter,
- 21:58but you're not going to make the forward
- 21:59progress that you could if you actually
- 22:00trained like training adaptation.
- 22:03Right.
- 22:04Um,
- 22:05And then the other response is, well,
- 22:07I need to train to get better,
- 22:09so I'm going to not do one of
- 22:11these things or X, Y,
- 22:12and Z of these things.
- 22:18It varies a little bit depending on,
- 22:19I guess,
- 22:20what the athlete needs to get better at,
- 22:22what they need for training,
- 22:25and how long it takes.
- 22:26Strength takes time.
- 22:28That's why James probably brought that up.
- 22:29Yeah.
- 22:30if you,
- 22:31you need time to move through a lifting
- 22:33cycle consistently to get progressive
- 22:36overload or to get the end result of
- 22:39the program, right.
- 22:42Endurance training.
- 22:43Yeah.
- 22:43It's similar,
- 22:44but like there's a little bit room for
- 22:46more room for variance and things like
- 22:48that.
- 22:49Um,
- 22:50Yeah, exactly, Corey.
- 22:53I just think it puts people in a
- 22:55subpar spot and you're just not going to
- 22:58have the training time to improve.
- 23:02well and James has always had like he
- 23:05has one big hole and it is strength
- 23:08right the rest of the stuff he has
- 23:11improved so tremendously and got to a
- 23:14great place that he's going to be
- 23:15competitive at every comp if he can negate
- 23:19the damage of the strength of it yeah
- 23:22and I mean there's ways to program where
- 23:25you can get
- 23:30I don't want this to be a programming
- 23:31show,
- 23:33but you can get marginal strength gains or
- 23:38strength improvements by doing low rep,
- 23:42high intensity lifting because you're just
- 23:44getting the CNS to adapt,
- 23:46which is what you would want to do
- 23:48to keep volume low if you're just going
- 23:49from competition to competition.
- 23:52But you're not getting...
- 23:55the raw strength adaptation of having
- 23:58eight weeks to go through five by five
- 24:01or, you know,
- 24:02like that's kind of the thing that he
- 24:04probably felt like he was missing.
- 24:08Because that stuff takes time and takes,
- 24:11you need to recover from it and things
- 24:13like that.
- 24:15Corey Leonard McElhaney,
- 24:16like the Tabasco people.
- 24:18No, it's a great analogy.
- 24:22If people don't know Madison story,
- 24:24like she is one of my favorite athletes
- 24:26in the space.
- 24:27She's great.
- 24:28She is a former UFC fighter who went
- 24:34undefeated in five attempts,
- 24:37broke her ankle in her final match and
- 24:40continued on with a broken ankle and
- 24:43She is such a badass.
- 24:46Such a badass.
- 24:48She's awesome.
- 24:48I love Maddie.
- 24:50Yeah.
- 24:52She's just one of my favorite people to
- 24:53watch.
- 24:53And she's so freaking strong with the
- 24:57Olympic lifts.
- 24:59And if you looked at her,
- 25:00you'd be like, nah.
- 25:04But yeah,
- 25:05she does so much with so little.
- 25:08That little body.
- 25:08Anyway.
- 25:09Yeah, I think the WFP thing, though,
- 25:11for most of my athletes has just been
- 25:14mainly a logistical thing.
- 25:15And then knowing, like,
- 25:17I go do one and then what?
- 25:19Right.
- 25:20Yeah.
- 25:22When I think like that first year,
- 25:24this first year has been such a debacle
- 25:27with the picking of the twenty.
- 25:30Like who got it, who didn't get it.
- 25:32Yeah.
- 25:33Yeah.
- 25:34Now,
- 25:34I think the ship will righten somewhat as
- 25:37now you're earning that spot in the top
- 25:39twenty.
- 25:39Sure.
- 25:41And then it gives you a goal to
- 25:43shoot for, but yeah.
- 25:46We don't have to talk about WFP for
- 25:48the whole thing.
- 25:50Any other thoughts on the CrossFit Games
- 25:53season coming up or that we just had
- 25:56that has been rattling around in that
- 25:59brain of yours?
- 26:02Um...
- 26:05This year was a lot.
- 26:07I think with the way semifinals was set
- 26:09up, um, just very not,
- 26:14I guess a little disjointed was the word
- 26:16probably.
- 26:17Um, the games was great.
- 26:20Um, I mean,
- 26:22Albany is not what I would call a
- 26:24destination, but, um, the games was great.
- 26:27It felt like the games, um,
- 26:30the vibe was really good.
- 26:32Um,
- 26:35I think the field was nice and competitive
- 26:39as well.
- 26:40Um,
- 26:40overall the men's men's race was obviously
- 26:43super entertaining to watch.
- 26:45Um, yeah,
- 26:47I'll be curious to see the direction they
- 26:49kind of go this next year.
- 26:50I think, um, I think it'll be good.
- 26:55I feel like we're going to get the
- 26:56semifinals kind of being outsourced again.
- 26:59Um,
- 27:00and we'll just kind of see what events
- 27:01they end up picking and things like that.
- 27:04Um,
- 27:07Yeah,
- 27:07I think it all depends on the partnership
- 27:10level.
- 27:11Right.
- 27:13So the one thing that has me optimistic
- 27:17is when you look at Wadapalooza SoCal and
- 27:20the entire games team being at Wadapalooza
- 27:23SoCal.
- 27:25Right?
- 27:26Yeah.
- 27:26Now you're talking to Dylan,
- 27:27you're talking to the organizers,
- 27:30and that becomes a partnership now as
- 27:32opposed to a competitor, right?
- 27:35right if crossfit is going to continue in
- 27:37this partnership mentality with these
- 27:40third party um semifinals then i think
- 27:44that we have a better shot at a
- 27:46better season moving forward yeah i agree
- 27:51hundred percent um
- 27:55Hold on.
- 27:56No one wanted to go to the warm
- 27:57welcoming.
- 27:58That is Albany.
- 28:00It was hot in Albany.
- 28:01It was toasty.
- 28:02Yeah.
- 28:03It wasn't about the weather.
- 28:05It was just about the surrounding area.
- 28:08Yeah, it was a little.
- 28:09Once you got in the venue,
- 28:11it was pretty good.
- 28:14Yeah, I liked the venue.
- 28:15The floor and the lighting and all that
- 28:18stuff were really good.
- 28:20I wish Vendor Village was closer.
- 28:23Yeah, I only went like once.
- 28:25Well,
- 28:27I went to the upstairs one a couple
- 28:30times,
- 28:30and then I went once to the one
- 28:32in the street.
- 28:34Well,
- 28:34the one in the street was closer for
- 28:35the spectators because they had to enter
- 28:39through that way to get into the venue.
- 28:43The one where the athletes were,
- 28:44which was convenient for us,
- 28:46that's where media and athletes were
- 28:48housed,
- 28:48that's the one I went to as well.
- 28:51But it just having it in a separate
- 28:53building was very weird.
- 28:55Yeah.
- 28:56I could see how that would be.
- 28:57Even the athletes in a separate building
- 28:58was weird.
- 29:00Yeah.
- 29:01We were kind of in our own little
- 29:03realm most of the weekend.
- 29:05Yeah.
- 29:07But again, back to the partnerships.
- 29:10If they continue with this partnership
- 29:11stuff, like NorCal Classic,
- 29:15if they get some partnering with the games
- 29:18team to say, hey,
- 29:19you can't do this event.
- 29:21There's no way it's going to be fair.
- 29:23Or just some expertise or some knowledge
- 29:26to say,
- 29:29Don't have a curved start line.
- 29:31Let's go with a straight start line.
- 29:36I think NorCal has a ton of potential,
- 29:38for sure.
- 29:40When I think about NorCal being there this
- 29:42year, it's like a fever dream.
- 29:44It was just so insane, dude.
- 29:47It was so insane.
- 29:49It has all the vibes of what you
- 29:50want to have a CrossFit competition to
- 29:52have.
- 29:53yeah it was great right it just the
- 29:57execution fell a bit short it was just
- 30:01it was it's definitely a comp i will
- 30:04never forget going to that's for sure but
- 30:08great vendor village vendor village was
- 30:10huge great community event yeah tons of
- 30:14people while they're watching
- 30:16yeah crowd crowd was lit too so all
- 30:20of that cool stuff if we could just
- 30:22clean up a little bit of the stuff
- 30:24on the floor yeah and all the stuff
- 30:26that was like the issues everybody made a
- 30:28big deal about it's very fixable right
- 30:33like very very fixable stuff so the gator
- 30:37push you had to know that there was
- 30:39going to be a problem with that from
- 30:40the start you had to know yeah the
- 30:44old gator push
- 30:46Well,
- 30:46they're switching it to a Gator Wrestling,
- 30:48apparently, to Dan Church.
- 30:51Gator Wrestling for an event this coming
- 30:53year.
- 30:54They can get some gators from Corey down
- 30:56in Louisiana, take them out there.
- 30:58The problem is they're going to have to
- 30:59get the exact same gators to wrestle so
- 31:02that everybody has a fair opportunity to
- 31:05pin and win.
- 31:08Same weight, same tooth length.
- 31:10Yeah.
- 31:10Right.
- 31:11Tooth length is important.
- 31:13Same bite force.
- 31:14That's probably important.
- 31:15Yeah.
- 31:17Yeah.
- 31:17Same age.
- 31:19You don't want a geriatric gator and then
- 31:21a young spry gator.
- 31:23Yeah.
- 31:24Yeah.
- 31:24Right.
- 31:26Yeah.
- 31:26I'm optimistic for this year though.
- 31:27I think, I mean,
- 31:30obviously the media has been in a really
- 31:32good direction.
- 31:33I feel like there's some momentum coming
- 31:35off the games.
- 31:35They've kept it through the last couple of
- 31:38months.
- 31:41Like to see the open,
- 31:42get really hyped up again, all that stuff.
- 31:47Of course is F that constantly varied
- 31:49Gator.
- 31:49Yeah.
- 31:55Well, you know,
- 31:57I do think they've been heading in the
- 31:58right direction.
- 31:59They had F the quick fix.
- 32:04Loved it.
- 32:05Right.
- 32:06That is dwindling down now.
- 32:08And Jenna just announced that their new
- 32:10campaign is starting October.
- 32:12Okay.
- 32:14So they have a new one coming out,
- 32:16which I find that that's cool.
- 32:19Now you're getting people excited about
- 32:21the next one before it even happens.
- 32:23Yep.
- 32:24Hopefully it lives up to the same thing.
- 32:25We the same level of what we've seen
- 32:28so far from Jenna and her team.
- 32:32I feel like it'll be great.
- 32:33I don't know if it'll hit as hard
- 32:35as fuck the quick fix did.
- 32:38Cause that was like,
- 32:40hadn't had anything like that in years you
- 32:43know yeah i mean i remember when i
- 32:44opened my phone and i saw that i
- 32:46was i was like yeah we're back so
- 32:50i do hope it is though kind of
- 32:53the attack on the glp ones and at
- 32:56least have that like one thing we can
- 32:59gather around and go against because
- 33:03that's what we've been missing yeah they
- 33:05haven't had a common enemy yeah
- 33:10Can you truly standardize a machine?
- 33:14I mean, yes, technically,
- 33:17but there's probably some variance at all
- 33:21the events between machine to machine.
- 33:27We've learned it's a lot easier to
- 33:28standardize a C-tube machine than an
- 33:31aerosol machine.
- 33:35Yeah, anything with a fan, though,
- 33:37is going to have a variance.
- 33:38Yeah.
- 33:41Yeah.
- 33:42And that is every machine.
- 33:44Yeah.
- 33:45You can't, I mean, even just the,
- 33:48the chain, the fan, the sensors, the,
- 33:52yeah.
- 33:54The C two stuff is usually close enough
- 33:57that it's not,
- 33:58it's not really throwing anybody for a
- 33:59loop though.
- 34:03Yeah.
- 34:03Cause we've even had trouble with the
- 34:04runners, right?
- 34:06Mm hmm.
- 34:08was it europe a couple years ago there
- 34:12was like that one lane it was the
- 34:13year kelly made the games there was like
- 34:16lane four lane eight something like that
- 34:18yeah yeah there was one of them at
- 34:21west uh at the the west regional that
- 34:24year that was i think if you went
- 34:25back and looked at the heat sheets like
- 34:28that lane was always a little slower yeah
- 34:31lane eight yeah
- 34:37favorite memory from that year was uh was
- 34:40kelly doing the tumble over the sandbag to
- 34:44finish has the game's position locked up
- 34:48trips and falls over the sandbag has to
- 34:50re-clean it and and i died inside and
- 34:58then them wait twenty five minutes to
- 35:00announce
- 35:04Yeah,
- 35:05that was probably the longest twenty five
- 35:07minutes of my life at that point.
- 35:10That was I also now that I'm a
- 35:14little bit away from that can appreciate
- 35:18how manic I probably looked in the coach's
- 35:21pit.
- 35:23like trying to do the math,
- 35:25not having enough times,
- 35:27not having enough,
- 35:29like not just trying to figure it out
- 35:32and then just being absolutely stressed
- 35:34out of my face.
- 35:36Um,
- 35:37it was like the first time I really
- 35:38interacted with Kiefer and I,
- 35:40I've always thought in the back of my
- 35:41head,
- 35:41he probably thought I was a psychopath
- 35:45cause I was freaking out,
- 35:47but
- 35:47Yeah,
- 35:48I think every coach is doing that in
- 35:50those moments.
- 35:51Dude, that was rough.
- 35:56Because the year before that was where,
- 35:58I think it was the year before that,
- 36:00at Syndicate,
- 36:01when Rebecca Fusile made it to the games,
- 36:04and it was one point between her and
- 36:06Brooke,
- 36:07one point between her and Kelly Clark.
- 36:10Yeah.
- 36:11So two points separated fourth to sixth.
- 36:15You imagine those coaches afterward?
- 36:17No.
- 36:19Stressed.
- 36:23Yeah.
- 36:23Trying to add everything in your head,
- 36:25trying to remember every time.
- 36:28Yeah.
- 36:29It's,
- 36:29it's so hard to keep track of it
- 36:31all too.
- 36:31And then like,
- 36:32you have to have the point table on
- 36:33hand trying to do math.
- 36:36Yeah.
- 36:36So how do you,
- 36:38do you have like a piece of paper
- 36:39and you're writing down people's times
- 36:41from other heats that may affect it?
- 36:43Are you a scout team dog?
- 36:46You are,
- 36:47you got to have a scout team.
- 36:48Oh,
- 36:51so you have someone there who writes down
- 36:54the time or score of every person and
- 36:56all the heats that go before my athletes.
- 36:59and then they reorder it for you and
- 37:01tell you... Well,
- 37:04I'll usually just have that with me,
- 37:06so then I can... Like,
- 37:09Jacob and I did that at TFX.
- 37:11He would be in the warm-up area,
- 37:13and we would be like, okay, cool, like...
- 37:14this is kind of the top time to
- 37:16start game plan.
- 37:17We should be fine.
- 37:18Like you're probably just going to be
- 37:19competitive with the guys in this heat.
- 37:21We shouldn't really have to worry about
- 37:23these guys from the previous heats.
- 37:24Right.
- 37:25Or, okay, this is a really good score.
- 37:26This might hold up like,
- 37:27cause this is kind of what we were
- 37:28mathing.
- 37:29So maybe that was a good event for
- 37:30that guy.
- 37:31If we don't know them, like,
- 37:32or know what they're capable of.
- 37:34Um,
- 37:35And then you can kind of,
- 37:36I'll reorder them in my phone on a
- 37:39note while my athletes are corralled to
- 37:44know the best time, second, third, fourth,
- 37:45fifth, et cetera.
- 37:47And then I'll get the time of when
- 37:50my athlete finished to then put them in
- 37:51that order to know what they got in
- 37:53the event before.
- 37:54So I won't necessarily know the points
- 37:56immediately,
- 37:57but I'll know the placing pretty quickly.
- 38:03Because that year with Kelly,
- 38:05Bailey came out of nowhere.
- 38:07She destroyed that event.
- 38:11And she qualified for the games on that
- 38:13event.
- 38:15And I wasn't even thinking of her as
- 38:18a factor,
- 38:19but she did so well in the event,
- 38:21she jumped everybody.
- 38:23It was wild.
- 38:25Yeah, she destroyed that event.
- 38:27And when they announced her,
- 38:28at that point, I thought Kelly was out.
- 38:30So did I.
- 38:32So did I.
- 38:33Kelly looked over at me at one point
- 38:35and she was like, what's up?
- 38:38And I told her, I said,
- 38:39I don't know.
- 38:40Like, I don't know.
- 38:42I had given up trying to do the
- 38:43math.
- 38:43I was like, I'm not going to know.
- 38:44I don't know.
- 38:45talked to her backstage right after and
- 38:47that was her exact i kept looking at
- 38:49tristan and he he's like i don't know
- 38:51i don't know i don't know i'm sorry
- 38:54i told her i don't know and then
- 38:56she looked away and i got her attention
- 38:58again and i was like it's okay like
- 39:02like don't it's just it's okay like it's
- 39:04gonna be what it's gonna be so yeah
- 39:08that was a wild
- 39:10That was a wild first semifinal coaching
- 39:13experience.
- 39:15I was at Granite Games the year before
- 39:17with a team,
- 39:17but having that many indies in a team
- 39:21was a lot.
- 39:24So what's up next for you?
- 39:29Some people are doing a local comp here
- 39:31in Houston in December,
- 39:34but I don't think I'm traveling anywhere
- 39:37until TFX.
- 39:42I don't know if I'll make it out
- 39:44to Fittest of the Coast this year.
- 39:47So should just be cruising until TFX.
- 39:51And then it'll be kind of batting down
- 39:53the hatches for the season because TFX is
- 39:55usually two to three weeks before the
- 39:57open.
- 39:58So then it'll be kind of get into
- 40:01all that.
- 40:03So no, sadly.
- 40:08So it's our,
- 40:10it's Corey and I's anniversary, Jenny.
- 40:12Our anniversary is the eighteenth.
- 40:15And not Corey Leonard.
- 40:17Yeah, not Corey Leonard.
- 40:20So we're going to go outside Austin.
- 40:24I wish...
- 40:25JR,
- 40:26if you watch this and you want to
- 40:28do me a favor,
- 40:28never have Crash on the eighteenth again.
- 40:31That would be great.
- 40:34So, can't make it this year.
- 40:36Thank you, Jenny.
- 40:38Won't be able to make it this year.
- 40:39I'm sure eventually I could probably
- 40:42convince my wife to go out there and
- 40:44we could do something for our anniversary
- 40:46a different weekend,
- 40:47but that was not a battle I was
- 40:50going to win for our one-year anniversary.
- 40:54What do you mean you didn't know?
- 40:57Well, let me tell you this.
- 40:58As someone who's been married almost
- 41:00thirty years, it's even still tricky.
- 41:05I'm sure.
- 41:07I'm sure.
- 41:09Yeah.
- 41:09It bums me out.
- 41:11I mean, I loved Crash when I went.
- 41:14I didn't get to go last year, obviously,
- 41:15because it was...
- 41:16I think the date of Crash was the
- 41:20week before our wedding.
- 41:23So I didn't go last year, obviously.
- 41:24And then now...
- 41:26Not going this year.
- 41:27So I haven't been since I went with
- 41:28Jamie that year.
- 41:30Nothing says romance like Spartanburg,
- 41:32South Carolina.
- 41:34Put that on a postcard.
- 41:38Yeah, he won.
- 41:39He won for revving up for Crash.
- 41:42Oh, she asked how Jacob will do.
- 41:46I think if Jacob executes well,
- 41:53that he will be on the podium.
- 41:58Do you feel,
- 41:59I've heard from people who will look at
- 42:01programming,
- 42:02that this seems a little heavy.
- 42:06And that would be Jacob's thing.
- 42:10Yeah.
- 42:11Yeah.
- 42:11I mean, JR flat out said, I think,
- 42:13in the spin when he announces the heaviest
- 42:15crash he's programmed.
- 42:19Which is why, like, as a coach,
- 42:22and I'm obviously biased...
- 42:24I have found some of the predictions a
- 42:26little funny.
- 42:28It's the heaviest crash ever.
- 42:31The one,
- 42:33the thing Jacob is the best at is
- 42:35picking up heavy objects.
- 42:38He's very strong.
- 42:39So obviously I'm confident that the work
- 42:42we've been doing in the off season has
- 42:45paid off as well on his fitness side.
- 42:47So I'm excited for him to just go
- 42:49and get after it though.
- 42:50He had a lot of fun at crash
- 42:51last year.
- 42:53I think he'll do well.
- 42:55I think he'll do very well.
- 42:56Cool.
- 42:58Yes.
- 42:59Yes.
- 42:59Colton smash for sure.
- 43:02Um, yeah.
- 43:04Crash is super cool.
- 43:04I'm really bummed that I won't be out
- 43:07there, but it is what it is.
- 43:10Yeah.
- 43:10When Jamie and I were looking at on
- 43:11Sunday night,
- 43:12like I think Reese Littlewood is one of
- 43:14the next big things to come down the
- 43:15pipe, but this is not her event.
- 43:19It's just too heavy for her.
- 43:21Yeah.
- 43:21Um,
- 43:24And so, to me, it's a Kyra,
- 43:26Caroline Stanley event.
- 43:30Yeah.
- 43:31I think those two are going to have
- 43:33a great weekend.
- 43:37So,
- 43:38it will be interesting to see him up
- 43:39against my guy, Jace.
- 43:41Jace will do well.
- 43:44There's not enough.
- 43:47Jace will do well on the machine event.
- 43:50And Jace will do well on probably the
- 43:53running and pulling event.
- 43:56Best event?
- 43:57Best event.
- 43:57Let me think.
- 44:15Corey, love your girls.
- 44:17Love talking to them.
- 44:18Think they're awesome.
- 44:20I don't think this weekend is for them
- 44:23in the podium area.
- 44:24Yeah.
- 44:26I think...
- 44:31I think his best event will probably be
- 44:35the flip sled strict.
- 44:40I'm trying to think of the other guys
- 44:41in the field a little bit too,
- 44:43like what can they do on some of
- 44:45these events.
- 44:52I think...
- 44:56I think that one will probably, yeah.
- 44:59Prestance.
- 45:00I think that will more than likely be
- 45:05his best event.
- 45:07I think he can do well in most
- 45:09of them.
- 45:11Um,
- 45:15I'm pretty confident in how he can do
- 45:17on open season,
- 45:18which is the front squat workout,
- 45:21but there's a lot that goes into that
- 45:24workout.
- 45:24And I don't know, you know,
- 45:27a hard thing with predicting where your
- 45:28athlete's going to fall is like,
- 45:29I'm not a full-time analyst, right?
- 45:31I don't know intimately the other guy's
- 45:34abilities.
- 45:35I know what some of these guys are
- 45:37good at and this, that, the other,
- 45:39but it's not my full-time job.
- 45:43Yeah.
- 45:44Yeah,
- 45:44you didn't make Media Hill last night.
- 45:46I did not make Media Hill at all.
- 45:51Nope.
- 45:51The Ascend Athlete podcast did not make
- 45:53Media Hill, sadly.
- 45:56Were you sad about that?
- 45:57Did you feel friend-zoned about that?
- 45:59I did not feel friend-zoned about that.
- 46:01we, I love doing our podcast.
- 46:03I I've done some episodes recently where
- 46:05I've had other coaches on and that's
- 46:06something I want to get back to after
- 46:07our, after my trip this weekend.
- 46:09But, uh, I, we are a coaching company,
- 46:14not a media company.
- 46:15So the media output on our podcast will
- 46:19always be at the mercy of how busy
- 46:21we are as coaches.
- 46:23Cause that's what we do is we coach
- 46:25athletes.
- 46:25Yeah.
- 46:25I, uh,
- 46:27I've just given you a shit anyway, but,
- 46:29um, uh,
- 46:32It was interesting, I will say that.
- 46:35It was nice to be mentioned.
- 46:38I may try to go listen to that
- 46:39just for funsies.
- 46:41I've listened to a couple of their
- 46:41episodes.
- 46:42I haven't listened to the whole till yet
- 46:43because the Bears were on last night and
- 46:46the Bears won and I was all about
- 46:48the Bears.
- 46:48And then I got,
- 46:49there was a last minute cancellation with
- 46:52a pulmonology person today and I took
- 46:55that.
- 46:55So I went up to a neighboring town
- 46:57for that and I've not been able to
- 46:59go back and watch the whole thing.
- 47:01I did cheat and go to where I
- 47:03was and see what was mentioned about me.
- 47:04Right.
- 47:06who i am yeah totally it's all about
- 47:09me and uh just saw that but i
- 47:12need to go back and see what they
- 47:13say about all the other media people in
- 47:15this space yeah i'll be curious what they
- 47:17say so wait there's an ascend podcast this
- 47:23is why i didn't know we had an
- 47:24anniversary i'm hearing of this yes sir we
- 47:29sure do cory i even knew that we
- 47:33sure do trying to do an episode a
- 47:35week
- 47:37This one that we did today was just
- 47:38going over the next cycle of programming
- 47:40for our Sugarwad program and kind of the
- 47:42time of year for one-on-ones.
- 47:45It's fun.
- 47:45Yeah.
- 47:46I do want to say publicly that Dallin
- 47:48Pepper is my favorite athlete.
- 47:53I think he's going to win the twenty
- 47:54six,
- 47:55the twenty seven and the twenty eight
- 47:57games.
- 47:59Just oh,
- 48:00and Shanna says Dallin Pepper had nice
- 48:02things to say about you.
- 48:03Oh, did he?
- 48:04Did he?
- 48:05No.
- 48:05What a coincidence.
- 48:08Didn't know.
- 48:09But yes,
- 48:10Dallin Pepper will win the next three
- 48:12CrossFit games.
- 48:13Handedly.
- 48:15It'll be a runaway win.
- 48:21The media list made just about as much
- 48:23sense as John's Mountain.
- 48:25I agree.
- 48:27I think it's all just...
- 48:29willy nilly, but to be mentioned that I,
- 48:31they even knew who I was,
- 48:33was a flattering enough for me to be
- 48:36in the runoff section of the mountain.
- 48:38Um, but at least I'm there.
- 48:41Yeah.
- 48:41Or not the mountain, the Hill,
- 48:43the runoff section.
- 48:44At least I wasn't kipping it real down
- 48:46in the trough where all the runoff ends
- 48:49up.
- 48:51John's games, mountain of episodes, uh,
- 48:57I just ignore any rational thought to how
- 49:02he picks.
- 49:02Because I'm not even concerned about that.
- 49:06I love listening to him and Tyler.
- 49:10Because Tyler just freaks out at some
- 49:12point.
- 49:13And it's so funny.
- 49:16Yeah.
- 49:18I...
- 49:22Here's what it is.
- 49:24I thought initially when he first did it,
- 49:25it was pretty creative.
- 49:27And I thought he did a pretty good
- 49:29job.
- 49:30I think now he's almost using it as
- 49:35leverage with the athletes.
- 49:38And if you hit his favorite,
- 49:41like Austin Hatfield,
- 49:44then up the mountain you go.
- 49:47Just to back what he's thinking.
- 49:49sure i mean it's hard to not have
- 49:53it's really hard to not have recency bias
- 49:57it's hard to not have confirmation by us
- 49:59bias when you like it's very difficult
- 50:03And what's funny about John,
- 50:05and we don't need to go on about
- 50:06him, but he'll be like,
- 50:09what have they done?
- 50:10What have they done?
- 50:11And that's why they're down at base camp.
- 50:14But Austin Hatfield will win the games.
- 50:18What has Austin Hatfield done?
- 50:20You just like him, so he's up there.
- 50:24He gets fired up about it.
- 50:25It's fun.
- 50:26The criteria is fluid at best.
- 50:30Yes.
- 50:32Yes.
- 50:34Yeah.
- 50:35But here's the thing.
- 50:36We all watch it.
- 50:38And we all talk about it.
- 50:41Yeah.
- 50:41It's super entertaining.
- 50:43So it's doing what they need to do.
- 50:46Corey, did I pronounce bias strange?
- 50:52I'm pronouncing it by ass from now on.
- 50:55Did I enunciate too much?
- 50:59Redundancy bias.
- 51:00Yeah.
- 51:03Corey, you need to come train.
- 51:05I know you don't live that far away.
- 51:10He's got small children, man.
- 51:13He's got to be in bed by six
- 51:14thirty p.m.
- 51:17He needs to eat his baby food at.
- 51:25I'm just giving him crap.
- 51:26Because that's why he can never come on
- 51:32the Sunday show or anything, because like,
- 51:34well,
- 51:34I've got to get my kid into bed
- 51:35and then that I have to be in
- 51:36bed at like six thirty and.
- 51:38Yeah.
- 51:42the Houston are you on the gym is
- 51:45just technically slightly on the west side
- 51:50but it's in the heights it's basically
- 51:51smack dab in the middle of the city
- 51:57because Houston is an hour away from
- 51:58Houston that's a fact Corey only has an
- 52:04alligator drawn carriage it doesn't get a
- 52:07ton of miles
- 52:14yeah I live in Houston and I drive
- 52:16like forty minutes to the gym excuse me
- 52:19yeah it's I hate to keep bringing up
- 52:22Kelly Baker but I would interview her
- 52:25during when we when we followed her
- 52:26through the season mm-hmm
- 52:29And she would say that too,
- 52:30that everything is an hour away in
- 52:32Houston.
- 52:33And so she would be in the car
- 52:34driving telling me how bad of a driver
- 52:37she is.
- 52:38And then like looking at the phone while
- 52:41she's driving to talk to me.
- 52:43And I'm like, I'm going to get a,
- 52:45like a crash live on air during this
- 52:50thing.
- 52:50Yeah.
- 52:51Yeah.
- 52:55Houston traffic is crazy too.
- 52:57I mean,
- 53:00jenny lives north side of houston i'm sure
- 53:03she can tell you too like she's still
- 53:05in the chat the houston houston traffic's
- 53:08wild people drive insane here sometimes
- 53:14most about myself uh dude i love to
- 53:17i'd love to i train mostly by myself
- 53:19but i may be getting a new training
- 53:20partner after next month nice training
- 53:25alone could be a grind
- 53:26Corey is actually old and he needs to
- 53:29go to bed that early.
- 53:32Fair.
- 53:33He needs to recover.
- 53:34He's working hard.
- 53:36Yeah.
- 53:38Well, man, it's been a blast,
- 53:40but probably time to get back to work.
- 53:43unfortunately i gotta head back you
- 53:45knuckleheads you get back to work as well
- 53:48and we'll see everybody and corey will be
- 53:50on here tomorrow to defend himself uh from
- 53:53all the hate and vitriol um and we
- 53:57will see him tomorrow with me on lunch
- 54:00with the glidesdale bye guys
