- Lucas: Hello again, and welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Ready for another tiny lesson? I've been practicing my market phrases, and I actually used them last weekend. Lucas: Oh, that's so good! How did it go? Luna: I bought mandazi and vitumbua without any trouble. The seller even smiled. But then I realized I don't know how to get around town. So, taxis? Let's learn how to get a taxi. Lucas: Perfect timing. Today we're going to learn how to hail a taxi and tell the driver where you want to go. Let's start with the most basic phrase: 'Nataka teksi.' That means 'I want a taxi.' Let me say it slowly: na ta ka tek-si. Luna: Nataka teksi. Lucas: Yeah, that's it! You can also just call out 'Teksi!' to get their attention. But more politely, say 'Teksi, tafadhali!' — 'Taxi, please!' Let's hear it. Luna: Teksi, tafadhali! Lucas: Nice! Now, once the taxi stops, you need to tell the driver where to go. Use 'Nipeleke' — that means 'Take me.' Then add the place. For example, 'Nipeleke sokoni' — 'Take me to the market.' Listen: ni pe le ke so-ko-ni. Luna: Nipeleke sokoni! Lucas: Exactly! Or if you're going to the airport, say 'Nipeleke uwanja wa ndege.' That's 'Take me to the airport.' Repeat after me: uwanja wa ndege. Luna: Uwanja wa ndege. That's a mouthful! Lucas: Let's try the full phrase: 'Nipeleke uwanja wa ndege.' Luna: Nipeleke uwanja wa ndege. Lucas: Good! Now, before you get in, you might want to ask 'Gharama ngapi?' — that's 'How much does it cost?' Say it with me: gha ra ma n ga pi? Luna: Gharama ngapi? Lucas: Perfect. And after the ride, you say 'Asante sana' — 'Thank you very much.' Let's practice a whole conversation. I'll be the taxi driver, you be the passenger. Luna: Okay! Teksi, tafadhali! Lucas: Karibu! Where to? Luna: Nipeleke sokoni. Lucas: Sawa. Gharama elfu tatu. Luna: Gharama ngapi? Elfu tatu? Sawa. Lucas: Asante sana. Luna: Asante sana! Lucas: You did it! And that's exactly the kind of exchange you'll have. Let's review the key phrases. First: 'Nataka teksi.' Luna: Nataka teksi. Lucas: 'Teksi, tafadhali!' Luna: Teksi, tafadhali! Lucas: 'Nipeleke sokoni.' Luna: Nipeleke sokoni. Lucas: 'Nipeleke uwanja wa ndege.' Luna: Nipeleke uwanja wa ndege. Lucas: 'Gharama ngapi?' Luna: Gharama ngapi? Lucas: And 'Asante sana.' Luna: Asante sana. Lucas: You know, it's listeners like you who make this show possible. A few of our listeners support us through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that helps us keep making these lessons without any ads. So if you've been learning with us, that's a great way to keep the show going. Luna: Yeah, it really does make a difference. And we love hearing that our lessons are helping you actually use Swahili out there. Lucas: Absolutely. So keep practicing, and next time you're in a Swahili-speaking city, you'll know exactly what to say. Until then, practice 'Nataka teksi' and 'Nipeleke' with a place you'd like to go. Luna: I'm going to practice 'Nipeleke uwanja wa ndege' because I want to travel somewhere warm! Lucas: Good idea. See you next time!
