- 0:14[SPEAKER_01]: I got my buddy here today.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_01]: Again, he's been on the podcast before.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_01]: and he also he fixed one of our chords for our mics so now we got three chords so after the last few episodes of when we've had three people here it's everybody's fighting for the mic and shit and oh so yeah you got some big favor yeah share in the mic ah sucks man no sucks yeah no shit back and forth and then somebody wants to say something well somebody else is talking that's pertinent and kind of important to here and you can't hear him you know what I mean
- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: We've had guests before for three of us.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_01]: So we're gonna try it and now we got the three of Mike.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's awesome I ended up getting to buy on this Mike.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a you're getting to see the first Use of this Mike The new you the new me the new me.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, maybe maybe it'll make me sound fucking better
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: I can't hide my voice, I couldn't even hide it from people, I've tried it, and it's like, no, they know it's me, so what can you do?
- 1:16[SPEAKER_01]: So thanks for fixing the court.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, some appreciate it.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, no worries, man.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I took it today because I knew he would be the man in the know because he used to work in the rock and roll industry.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: You should tell us your story about that, Dave.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: How you got into that?
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, it's an odd story for sure, right?
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: And oddly, I was working up in the high Arctic for a couple of years.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: Came back down and looking for a change of venue for something different to do.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: And a friend of mine said, hey, I know this rock and roll singer.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, yeah, he goes, no, no, he's feast pretty good, right?
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: And he goes, yeah, I talked to his manager.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a manager and everything.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: I went, no way.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, yeah.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, uh, that's the boy I got to meet this guy, and uh, because one of my older brothers, uh, he was in Bans, he was a drummer singer, you know, Larry, I'm not sure if you're met him.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if I left him.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's the pharmacist in the family.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, right.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: There's an albernate.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, a real farmer since there's some of that good, good at making drugs and selling him.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, he's real pharmacist and he's good at making money because in Canada, it's a very good business Yeah, for sure.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so I was kind of had an eye to music and so anyway, we went down to a pub a local watering hole and I met the manager and he seemed like he seemed like he might
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: know what's going on and uh... could you never know people yet yet yet in a few beers right and uh... so he offered to take me to meet the guy and see the band practicing right awesome right so if you did so later i got a call and uh... we go to this uh... and kind of an old rundown kind of uh... uh... like double wide trailer with a kind of a little shed building off the side here the boys wailing away and so we go on in and make the introductions and
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: Listen to them and by God he can sing yeah, yeah, and and really really well, you know, and he was only probably 17ish at the time 18ish at the time.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and yeah, so anyway Turns out they needed their bus worked on I happen to be a mechanic and Had nothing really going on and so I went and got their bus up and running for them and this is hey, yeah, you want to drive it
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: So I drove it to a couple of venues and he said, hey, you want to help us unload some gear and yell, yeah, sure.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: Why not, right?
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: So I unload some gear instead of a couple of PA's form and thought it was a pretty interesting thing to do, yeah.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: Beats pulling wrenches at 40 below for sure, right?
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, so
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I guess next thing they needed was some signs built and I said, well, I can do that right so I got my friend who introduced me to last year the manager at the time.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: So even now we built some big signs that said Hollywood North and
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: We stuck it up on mountain sides and hill sides and anywhere Like the other side they got it in Hollywood Exactly right just just trying to get some publicity and And so we did a lot of gigs locally and you know got a lot of interest, you know, and Some record labels came running.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: talk in whatever and uh so eventually uh he got a record deal yeah and I was like wow pretty cool right yeah that's a local the local guy from barks well super cool exactly right and yeah what's that say what is name oh yeah Paul Lane yeah Paul Lane so anybody parks will call looking me might remember Paul Lane specific of your our age for sure yeah yeah no he's still given her right still out there singing
- 4:58[SPEAKER_01]: Awesome.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't seen him in years.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: Well he actually used a front man for the band trooper.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: Also, he had to take it over trooper.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think you did tell me that, right?
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: And you worked for trooper for quite a few years after this first gig with Paul, wasn't it?
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, after uh, after uh, yeah, uh, I was pulling wrenches again.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: And uh, some guy goes, hey, uh, you know how to do lights?
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: I go, no.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: because you want to learn, I'm like, sure, so the band trooper hired me as a lighting guitar tech drum tech guy and I went out there for my first road trip, new fucking nothing about setting up lights and jails and scenes and, you know, plus I had to look after the guitars and the drums, you know, as well.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: So it was a pretty intense couple of tours.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, uh, you learned from, uh, well, no sort of, uh, uh, yeah, through the end of the bus just like get her done, did?
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they had a merch guy and he knew a little bit of a lights.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: And so he helped me quite a bit on the first couple of weeks, you know, because I was absolutely an idiot, right?
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: like seriously like an idiot.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: And so I actually introduced myself because we always rented gear like front of house and sound boards and shut like that.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: We brought our own stage gear.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: So there was usually a lighting tech on a lot of the bigger venues and I would just introduce myself and go hi there my name's Dave the world's prettiest light man.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: Any ideas?
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm in over my head, right?
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: I want to do a good show.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: Totally honest.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, upfront man, like you can't bullshit these guys.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: You don't as a tech guy.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: You don't put on airs.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: You know that's for the band members.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: That's that's their gig, right?
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: You're supposed to know what the fuck you're doing out there.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: Because without you there is no show oddly right without tech guys, right and I go way more than them than there are musicians on the stage usually you know what to make a show Oh yeah, oh for sure, yeah, you got the sound guys the late guys you got the yeah Well you got all the PA guys, you know, you got all the lecture you know the thetrusting and oh my god, you know this is like and to bigger the venue way more people right yeah for sure
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so anyway, that's what I got along with Trooper and that was interesting.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: Got to see all the Canada.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's cool.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: Right, because they're like Canada's premier party band.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're still, and they're still playing.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: Still going.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_01]: And so everybody's original, except Paul.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: They've had a bunch of shift change.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the whole band has changed.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, the whole band has changed.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_01]: But.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, Scott Brown on bass and Paul Gogo on keyboards right there from the island here.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: They were in Paul Lane's first band Hollywood Norris.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: And they've been in Trooper longer than the original guys have been in Trooper.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no shit.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: The original Trooper like these guys have beat out the original Trooper.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: No shit.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_01]: So how does that work of all the other band?
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: They just agreed to.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you guys keep going.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: Use the name and
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: Well, uh, the two owners, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: oh okay oh really yeah yeah I mean uh it's no different than like a lot of the uh the classic rock bands now the the guys are like 75 and 80 years old yeah there's no way they can sing anymore to bring in a young singer yeah yeah like take journey uh the band's journey yeah but that was a falling out with uh with uh that uh well uh Steven Perry the singer yeah they had a falling out didn't they somewhat but he wasn't the original singer
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, there was someone before Steve, I see I didn't know that right and he I did the first couple albums and they had a couple hits with them Yeah, then Perry comes along and then he decides not to well that that Arnell fellow from the Philippines from the Philippines.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: He's been singing longer than the other ones combined.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that right?
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they found him doing karaoke or something.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I actually I saw the That's huge in the Philippines, man.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: Oh
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I actually saw the documentary on him getting a job.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, really?
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: The first session didn't go well.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: They were really like, they were really like, they're real.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: But he just flown in.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: So he's jet lag.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_01]: And your voice is probably kind of crowded.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: And everybody wants to talk to you and you shouldn't talk if you're a lead singer.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like after a gig and you should just shut the fuck up, you know drink your hot hot tauties and put your towel around your neck and get on the bus, you know, like seriously.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like I just like you see when you work with these guys.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yeah, they're drinking hot tauties and like, yeah, like, you know, hot hot hot, you know, like lemon and, uh, you know, certain things that they take for their throat.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: But like I guess it's like their instrument, right?
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: It is like so, you know, like tuning your guitar.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: So they're on the bus real quick after the show was out right.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they don't want to be talking to the fans like the other band members talk Yeah, because the more you talk the less you can sing Yeah, it's a muscle.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: It needs to read oxygen needs to recuperate.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and you know a two-hour show That's a lot of fucking yeah, belt neuro.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're breathing and trying to sing and remember your lines and you know Sometimes you're playing guitar as well.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: How they do that play guitar and sing, but
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty amazing.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, it's a muscle memory for the guitar, but I suck at it.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: I pick it up, everyone's well-fuck around.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I saw a few chords, you know, and...
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: I suck.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I know.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: But yet, I got to make a career out of being a attack, and I didn't even play the goddamn instrument.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but you got a tour of the world under the country, yeah.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, but I could I could change a string and like less than a song Oh, is that right?
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's the break of all their plans.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I was with Trooper I was a lighting guy.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm about the front of house there doing my my lights whatever and I see Smitty right You know The guitar player breaks a string.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I just sent a scene.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: I run to the back of there I got a little guitar station already set up and I grabbed the guitar and I restring it and then I get it back to him before the songs over
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no shit.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: What does he do in the meantime?
- 11:04[SPEAKER_00]: Well, he has two guitars on stage.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_01]: So you see him break the string put the one down.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: He grabs the other one.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_01]: You run up.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_01]: You grab the other one.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: Get it exactly.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, like in your and like sometimes it's it's all obviously noisy because you're right there.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: The man's like, you know, and so you I got my tuner set up.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: I had to think of a strobe tuner.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, they're they're they're old, but they're awesome, right?
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: And so I would I could quickly stretch it get it on there back together To end it up right don't don't don't don't quickly yeah back on stage and he's like a big thumbs up because a lot of like there's signature songs There's a certain guitar sound.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so they want to
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so he need like the last fall maybe what you know for this, but they need the you know the Fender Stratford or something else right and you can tell as soon as they they change the guitar mid It's awesome.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, you can definitely tell right?
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so yeah, so I got pretty good at it All right, and see what you know change in like drum heads or whatever right drum stand breaks or quickly there little tool kit, you know
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes the drummers play in a way and I'm crawling under around them trying to get the pedal back on Oh, yeah, like it's live, right?
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the show must go on.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, I mean, I've had a like a lighting trust fall, you know
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, that was a earphone because you didn't set up.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I didn't check it, right, and that was I was still new to the gig Right, and my job is to make sure that all the shit is They call it spiked.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, sometimes it's a gas tape or a chain or a rope or wait I didn't check it in the thing
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: right thank god nobody was hurt yeah no kidding that didn't fire me right yeah no doubt because that's possibility yeah yeah see later today I don't know how you got no one but you are fucking fire you're some bus fare yeah thanks for coming out yeah love you to death buddy
- 12:53[SPEAKER_00]: that's fucking awesome dude yeah so so uh you went all across Canada with these guys which rooper yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah and then we uh we did a like you know doctor hook oh yeah yeah yeah we were in Hamilton no Sudbury we did doctor hook and uh that was pretty cool because uh uh the guy with the the hat and the one eye he was still with them oh yeah yeah we were in Hamilton no Sudbury we did doctor hook and uh that was pretty cool because uh uh uh uh the guy with the uh the hat and the one eye he was still with them oh
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, yeah, you know he's up there beating on the snare drum.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's putting thing in right Pretty cool, right?
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the box bust just reeks of fucking weed, right?
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, and they got they got busted at at the border And they were late getting there, right?
- 13:30[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, because they're from the States They were coming to Gabby.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, start their tour with us They won't put the door on my smoke pours.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, you're probably gonna get busted
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, so I, you know, I got to, you know, see some pretty cool acts of trooper, but because we are the headliner all the time.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: And right, right, you know, when I was with Paul, that's when I met more of the cool rock guys, you know, the later ones.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the current popular ones at the time, you know, like a calling James, let's say, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: Seattle like eight months ago.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oh cool.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she was good Matt.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: Billion Billion Billion, Billion, and Joan Jack got together to do this tour.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: We just said fuck dude, let's go.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: So Marion and her cousin Cam and her husband we all went down there and it was actually fucking good.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: Joan Jack was better than Billion.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_01]: They were both pretty good, but don't jet something, like 78 years old or something.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: You couldn't fucking tell.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_01]: She built it out all the songs you remember.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: Billy Idol, he went on for quite a while.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: He's in good shape, too.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, it was pretty interesting.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you got to meet her, too.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't get the moves on here anything.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, we wrote in Ontario, most in Park.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: And it was...
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: the day before the festival and so she uh i think she was like the headliner okay so she got like uh the choice uh how much time she needs on the stage and everybody works around them oh yeah yeah and i remember she was out there with her guitar going out into the you know area where people were gonna be uh hanging out and talk to the sound man right and i guess uh he wasn't given her what she wanted whatever
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: You know I'm fucking a wire less right she's standing out in the middle of the field playing right you know isn't right Yeah, and that so yeah, you got those little pp-wacked right.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, but one time with Paul we were in Can't knack run Ohio and We were the headliner down there just after his album came out and down there some DJ fell in love with it So it's playing is he is single at the time
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: And so we get off the plane, get our stuff all loaded up and it's weird because I'd never
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: This sounds racist.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_00]: I had never seen so many black guys wearing red caps at the fucking airport before.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: Like the really weird black guys wearing red caps, right?
- 16:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like the chauffeur kind of, you know, you're begging.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: That helped you with your luggage.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_00]: And they were actually wearing red.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: We're in the open.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: I saw that down in the States coming back from, I think Florida.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think when we stopped, didn't we stop on the way back again?
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: Damn, for no, I don't think it was Denver.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: It might have been when we went down to, I saw them too.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: And that was the first time I'd seen that, you know, like with a full outfit and everything, yeah, I was kind of interested.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, it's true.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a job.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: Me?
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, we get loaded up in myself and the sound guy, or no, myself, and the other technician at the time,
- 16:41[SPEAKER_00]: Had her own lighting guy wasn't me.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: It was the other fella another go go Lawrence go go he actually when Prime Minister Mourini was actually campaigning to be Prime Minister.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he was his lighting guy and and sound guy Lawrence go and he actually sort of looked like Prime Minister Mourini with a chin and
- 17:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and he actually kind of sounded like I'm a little bit, we need, you know, and just, right?
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, him and I, we load up the Q band, right, and we're driving, and we're, you know, back then you have maps.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_00]: There's no GPS cell phone shit, right?
- 17:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: You got like a phone card and stuff, you know?
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so we're, you know, we're getting out, you know, it's, it's no door festival, but it turns out it's quite a ways out of town, like, about 20 miles out of town.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_00]: And we go and then turn off and it's kind of lumpy bumpy and then we come to a gate and there's some guys there with their rifles I'm like, oh Welcome to America.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is getting serious.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and the guy pokes his head in and he goes Which one of you is Joel Van Dyke?
- 17:43[SPEAKER_00]: Oh fuck.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, uh, you're not here are road matters.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: You're going
- 17:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that guy, where is he, right?
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, probably back at the hotel.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, they were really, really angry with them.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: And anyway, so they let us in, unload our gear or whatever.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, I guess Joel had been very rude to these people on setting up for trying to get the gear arranged, you know, the PA, the soundboard, because everybody has a particular want or need, right?
- 18:14[SPEAKER_00]: And because it's a fly in, we needed amplifiers for the base player and the guitar players and stuff, right?
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: To keep on amps, all that shit, right monitors.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, I guess Joel had pissed these guys off.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: They wanted to shoot him dead.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no shit.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_00]: No shit.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_00]: They were so, and they were drunk.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, oh, these weren't like border guards even as it's some red now.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, they were the guys putting on I guess they were security for the show or they rock I don't know But they were mad they were drunk and they had fucking rifles and they wanted a shoot Joel Mandak Now oh, he should now he in hindsight
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: He was a prick.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: I got to say he we didn't treat me overly well when I was there But yeah, I got a story.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_00]: I could tell you about him, right?
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, it's a cool story.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so yeah, and they wanted to fucking blast him So anyway, the next day they have their powwow and I guess they get it sorted out But anyway, we're doing our show because we're the headliner oddly and Cause we're new out of the gate and all of a sudden a brawl breaks out in the crowd Holy shit and and and and then it just
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: escalates and everything had to be shut down.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: Oh really?
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a fucking riot.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah Oh yeah, it was a fucking awesome.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, it's dead.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: Hey alcohol and guns.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, I'll do it That fucking did they ever catch up with Van Dyke Well, he showed up there.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_00]: They must have worked it out.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they didn't shoot him And he didn't shoot him.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: They fucking wanted to totally fuck.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was a border guide you were talking Oh, no, no, it was a guy's putting on the venue
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: Holy shit, he was probably, yeah, I acted too much like a Prima Donner or something.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: So what's this other story about him?
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: Well, when Paul got his record deal
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: and uh... he was it looks like it was uh... going to happen anyway uh... he had actually two managers he had a female manager yet and he had less for and uh... he had his adopted mom right she took a man when uh... things were not good in his life right right anyway uh... so somebody really trusted exactly right and so uh... and he was franny franny adderson and uh... nice nice person anyway she posed me aside one day he goes you know date
- 20:23[SPEAKER_00]: now that he's you know going off like there's no there's no place for you here oh shit no shit actually you helped him to get up and she fucking was saying you got no no what what she said was you got no marketable skill in the business oh what the fuck happened you teach me by me what the hell
- 20:40[SPEAKER_00]: Well, and that's the other thing, right?
- 20:41[SPEAKER_00]: A story, but we can't teach you.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_00]: We need somebody who knows how to do it.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_00]: Because he's a rookie and he's a rookie, and we need some people who are professionals.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, fuck.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I was short under this thing, yeah.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: I was hardbroken, right?
- 20:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no doubt, man.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: So, I get a hold of, and by that time, a couple of our band members from Hollywood North, that they had joined a six-night-a-week club bands, right?
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: So, this band called Simon Chaos, which was probably the premier, six-night-a-week
- 21:23[SPEAKER_00]: probably as far west as like Saskatchewan Alberta they were huge right and back in the day uh... that was called uh... sand feldman associates he basically controlled all the bands and all the rooms okay and so you did six nights in a town like calgary or evident in a red deer right and they put you up in a bandhouse okay and then you would play monday to saturday and then you would tear down saturday and you'd load up in your drive on sunday to the next town or city
- 21:51[SPEAKER_00]: to do another six night.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_00]: And then you do another six night.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, just wait was.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking, we're talking 80s and 90s.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the way it was, right?
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: Six night or so anyway, I knew that Scotty Brown and Paul Goggle had started working with Simon K. Awesome, just for money, because the thing about trying to get a record deal, there's a lot of downtime.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_00]: Right because you're trying to do originals and nobody wants to hear original so they're on the radio They want to hear the stuff they want to hear exactly right so anyway There's not so we did sporadic gigs.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_00]: We'd promote the fuck out of home.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we'd we'd rant arenas We did all that and cost money and I I did my part, right?
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, showing out some dough and oh you old they would ask them to help the workers like we're fine No, no, no, no like I was more of a
- 22:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like I was an investor as well as a worker, I'd say, because I had access to a bit of money at the time.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I had skills that they needed at the time, like I could, you know, I could wire up a PA.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: If you invested in getting the money for the arena, you would get your money back in a little more.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_00]: Well, no, no, no, it was all put in the kitty, and then we're going to get it on the back end when something happens.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: Because we're trying to make something happen, right?
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: Just as a lot goes out.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you know you do a gig and you're an unknown one So you're gonna get like five grand.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, send you paid a PA and just a hired help on the stage There was your money.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not making Paul's not making anything either Like you know, everybody's doing it for the love of the game They only but the only eventually it's gonna happen
- 23:30[SPEAKER_00]: The only people getting paid are the backup band, the PA company, the lighting company, those guys.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_01]: Because you've got to keep them in your good books, you've got to do another gig there, and they're going to be like, dude, you didn't fucking pay us last time.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly, right?
- 23:42[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, so I was a good jack of all trades, but I had no skill, really, but you know, right?
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: And so anyway, I thought, hmm, so I called up Scotty Brown, the bass player, and who's still with Trooper now.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I said Scotty, man, I'm going to make you the deal of a century.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to come over.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm going to work for free and you're going to show me how to fucking run a rock show.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and this was the way you were going to learn exactly to get back in.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_00]: So he gets a hold of the singer and the guitar player, Kenny only or Kenny Chaos, right?
- 24:14[SPEAKER_00]: The stage name and Dorisito H. The singer really good.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: Good thing he went on to sing for Prism.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_00]: Right after they came back because Henry Small replaced Ron Tabat who died Then they went on hiatus anyway Darcy was a singer for a lot of years, right good guy awesome guy Anyway, so he agreed that I could work for free Doing six nighters.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_01]: Holy shit.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let me give you some food.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, it's my dime
- 24:44[SPEAKER_00]: Because they can't hire somebody like me because there's only so much money They've got to pay pay rentals every week.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: They've got to pay lighting rental every week That'll sound guy a lighting guy.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_00]: They've got to pay film and associates their cut, right?
- 24:59[SPEAKER_00]: For the booking, right?
- 25:00[SPEAKER_00]: So there's only so much money, right?
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, I would, you know, and of course I had to tell the girlfriend
- 25:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, oh yeah, she probably didn't like that much.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_01]: No, hence, you are singled to this day, dude.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: Could be something to that.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, yeah, so I go over there.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_00]: And Paul is living over there, and he's got an apartment with Scotty Brown.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: So this is based out of Vancouver.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think we're one East Broadway.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_00]: Right on East Broadway.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: I buy a Glory wagon, right?
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: A white one with six-cylinder automatic, right?
- 25:35[SPEAKER_00]: You can let down the back seat.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: You can sleep in there.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you can carry band gear.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, right, right.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_00]: You know, speakers, cabinets, drum kits.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, I do that.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_00]: And so I see one of his coach, right?
- 25:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_00]: And so I quit my job.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_00]: So I can get some pogey.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I had to live.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: So did they let you off?
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: You did not have to quit.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: They actually laid you off like that.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I was working with my brother-in-law at his refrigeration company.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I learned how to be a refrigerator repair man and wash your dryers still all that kind of shit, right?
- 26:12[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I like to learn.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, I said, hey, you know, I got this opportunity.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_00]: And so they made me off, right?
- 26:19[SPEAKER_00]: And so I got my pulleys stamps, right?
- 26:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I had a year, right?
- 26:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I went over there and slept on their couch, didn't my six nighters, right?
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: And then like we'd go to Prince George for a week, it's Fort St. John for a week.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: You go to Vernon for a week, cam loops, you know?
- 26:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like everywhere.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: A little small fucking towns.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone, and then you do an Abbott's Food for a week, or rocket 88, or club 88, or whatever the fuck was called, New West for a week, you know?
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway,
- 26:46[SPEAKER_00]: So when I was in town, I would say on sleep on their coach, right?
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: And Scotty Brown, the bass player, he always never had no money.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_00]: But so we'd go to the Sally Ammy by like stuff for costumes, you know, like stuff to cool stuff to wear, right, stage or whatever.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_00]: And he was good looking guy, I always talk to girlfriends, but no money, right?
- 27:06[SPEAKER_00]: He was in the band.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, that's why I had lots of girlfriends, right?
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: Good looking guy right and anyway, yeah, so that's kind of how I I learned to cable up a fucking rock show and What an amplifier was and you know how they all work and you know how we get tired drum kits and stuff right?
- 27:23[SPEAKER_00]: That's what the cool dude and so and so anyway time progresses and the deal is done and and so We're going to little mountain studios in Vancouver.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's famous.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_01]: I heard of that right.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_00]: I mean Richie Sambora bond joe B recorded there
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: Aerosmith.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_01]: One Joven came up to Vancouver and recorded there.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: Fuck man, I had Richie Sambor as fucking Stratocaster in my hand, toening it up so the rockstar could use it on one of his songs.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_00]: Oh really?
- 27:52[SPEAKER_00]: Cause through his fairburn, the world-class producer.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I heard his name, yeah.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_00]: Well, he didn't fucking everybody up until he passed away.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, quote.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: Because you know, Bancidity.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, anyway, so anyway, yeah, so I so we got total amount of studio there, and so I got to see how an album's recorded, right?
- 28:11[SPEAKER_00]: But you're like really professional people, right?
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_00]: And anyway, so the album's done.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's getting the camera getting ready to come out, right?
- 28:18[SPEAKER_01]: Real quick, this is Paul's album, which album is this?
- 28:20[SPEAKER_01]: Paul means album.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's very first album called Stick It In Your Year.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, my sister bought it.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_01]: It was fucking awesome.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: Awesome, dude.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_01]: Like I can't still house it.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think I just fucking played it the other day.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: I was Fucked there is some pretty good songs on here.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_01]: What's some good things on that fucking thing?
- 28:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, dude.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, he was talented man or he is down Yeah, I remember as a kid.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'll interrupt for one little story.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: I probably told you this.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a kid
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: The old Berkswell or Qualcomm middle school there was like the main school you went in the front doors here and then it was down quite a ways and then it had this little all cove where the gym was like you could go right through that door into the change rooms and then it kind of bump back out and then went down there where all the shops were.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we come around the corner, I can hear this fucking music.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_01]: And also, you just start to rip in this eruption from Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo on that.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, where the fuck is this?
- 29:12[SPEAKER_01]: We come around, and there's Paul just fucking given her on this.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_01]: And it was fucking awesome, man.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_01]: It sounded just like it.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember what was that teacher's name?
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: She was pretty young and good luck.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_01]: I really tall.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_01]: I was shit.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, fuck, I can't remember a fucking name off the top of my head.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: I always think of Miss Bob Ware from middle school.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: Really like this bubble.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: She was awesome, but the other girl she had the lady she came on and she was like that was really good But you can't because it was loud, right?
- 29:39[SPEAKER_01]: She's not a little piggy out but real loud one And he's just belted that out and I remember that's the first time I seen this guy on my who the fuck is this guy?
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's appalling on my buddy.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_01]: No, and So he's pretty fucking good man.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was pretty cool
- 29:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no he uh he was stuck in the uh talented guy right is is talented guy right?
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, not album was there was about five really good really good songs on that.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think I see my sister's got that CD.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to listen to it.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: I probably can sure you get it on Spotify.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's definitely on YouTube.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: I go there quite often.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'll check out what he's doing, right?
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: I want to go on the YouTube with some of his live troopers stuff from the old days and see if I can see you crawling around and running out and grabbing a guitar to take off.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I don't think there's anything with me to do a trooper on, yeah, I don't think so.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: Because you know what, they dub everything over a course of five or six.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: concerts if they were doing it.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know what song right I don't
- 30:40[SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple of things I saw myself with Paul Lane in his different bands or whatever, because you know he has a country thing going on, right?
- 30:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's like dark horse.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's called.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's still doing that because Well, the CD is still available.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_00]: You can get it online, right through like dark horse or Paul Lane.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, okay.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: And he's still got the band, the defiant.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_00]: They got that album called Drive.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, so he's been in with a number of different bands.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like the the latest one drive, a man of first three fucking songs on that CD, they kick fucking ass.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, if you like fucking rock and roll, yeah, big fucking guitars sound, big drum, big vocal.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: The first three songs are awesome.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_01]: And what does that album?
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's called Drive.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_01]: Drive by the fire.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, the defiant drive.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_01]: Defiant, I'll try and remember that.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_01]: Check it out.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's it's it's really really good stuff, right?
- 31:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, so get back to my story how how we went on the road.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, we do the album whatever and we're getting a tour lined up.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: And our first big tour is going to be we're playing most in park and in Toronto, we're flying out there and it's going to be in an out kind of a thing and Dave, you're not going.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_01]: What again?
- 32:03[SPEAKER_01]: What the fuck did you do?
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: You were working for free.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is the other manager.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_00]: No, this is Franny.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, she's a fucking bitch.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_00]: She had, there's a punchline coming.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna get to the punchline and then I'm gonna go, I get it.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, no, she was looking out for her boy, I was she should.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so I go to Joel Van Dyke and he's like, yeah, Dave, you're, you're can't, you can't go, man.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's, I need a real professional with me.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_00]: And you just ain't got it.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_00]: You've never done this before.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I really want to take one of Brian Adams guys, right?
- 32:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, he's five.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 32:40[SPEAKER_00]: And Mike.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: They really never give you a fucking chance.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't what?
- 32:42[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_00]: So I went awesome, right?
- 32:45[SPEAKER_00]: So you know, I go back.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_00]: I talked to Franny and you know, like, yeah, well, you know, he's the road manager.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: Because Joel Van Dyke had been our sound guide, the hired guy.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_00]: And every time we did a live show, when Paul was trying to get a record deal, we always hired Joel Van Dyke to do sound.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_00]: And he's a...
- 33:02[SPEAKER_00]: killer live sound guy right he was really really good you know I learned a bit you know what a ground lift is and stuff to get buzzes at a pH whatever you know you pick shit up and learn how to do monitors right you know get the right sound and the right monitor for the right guy right that's all Joel awesome thank you but anyway he said man you're just too green I can't I'm trying he's like no Dave you really no so I tell Paul right and he's like yeah well
- 33:30[SPEAKER_00]: And I didn't really want to put it on him because anyway, so I was at a club, a plane, whatever, and at the end of the night there in Vancouver, we're loading out on a sea jewel, walking to his car and the doors have hang on off kind of a thing, big thing on the hood.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_00]: I said, Joel, I'll make you a fucking deal.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_00]: There's a long weekend coming up.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: I'll take your car home on the weekend.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_00]: I'll paint it, fix the door, and I'll bring it back to you.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_00]: And if I do that, can I go to the first show?
- 34:00[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, no, no.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_00]: And he just, like, laughs, there's no fucking way.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_00]: I said, no, I'm serious man, right?
- 34:04[SPEAKER_01]: I can do it.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'll do it, right?
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: Cause you already had a bunch of bodywork experience at this point.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I, yeah, I, I, I dabble.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_01]: I dabble, let's say, right?
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_00]: I dabble.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so anyway, so he agrees.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_00]: So I call the girlfriend, say, listen, I'm coming back to the island, but I'm working.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm working 24-7 here.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_00]: I got to paint a car and fix some rust and I got to get it back to them Right, so I come back for IDN-8 and I borrow my my brother-in-law's little tiny shop Which is not a quick for this at all.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's dark and dreary and Homemade compressor and anyway I get it all fixed up.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_00]: I get it fucking painted right it's one of those celebrity front wheel drive 80 square body cars
- 34:43[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, drive it back over to him, the door opens and shuts and like, it goes like, well, I guess you're going.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_00]: Holy shit, so for the whole tour of the board.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_00]: We're just doing this one fly away and then coming back, right?
- 34:53[SPEAKER_00]: And, uh, but he goes, man, I, I really don't trust you, right?
- 34:58[SPEAKER_01]: He's just, I don't know where you're going to fix this fucking car.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly, so anyway, so I get on the plane, I get my little tool kit, whatever, and I don't know, I can't take it with me, I thought I'd check it in.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a rookie.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what the fuck I'm doing.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a young guy.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'm 28 years old or something Yeah, you know, I don't I've never flown with tools.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so it gets lost in transit So we get out there.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I'm on the plane.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm I'm sitting next to a Brian out of the sound guy.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_00]: Jody perfect Okay, I didn't call it him for years.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, Mary.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: Mary is that an uncle.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: No him pretty well.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right?
- 35:33[SPEAKER_01]: And he's in the song Jody quit or no
- 35:36[SPEAKER_01]: Jody got married Jody got married Exactly, right?
- 35:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, he did have an crawler come over up off back off the highway, kind of overlooking the water.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_00]: I've got a Jeep diva.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_00]: You can paint it.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, flying all the way, it's five fucking hours, right beside me, we won't see a fucking word to me.
- 35:54[UNKNOWN]: What?
- 35:54[SPEAKER_01]: I can't forget to ask you to fix the job.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, that was up to the Joel Van Dyne.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, he did, but that later he asked me about that.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_00]: But at the time, he was just bright and sound guy and I was a nobody.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't want to talk to you, right?
- 36:07[SPEAKER_00]: Because I want to ask questions, you know, because I'm nervous.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I don't know what I'm doing.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so we get up there.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_00]: You're right.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's our turn to go on, right?
- 36:17[SPEAKER_00]: And what a day forget the fucking dude that they start the banster.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's the opening, right?
- 36:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's called coming poll runs out their grabs the guitar and goes to strum it and Dave forgot to put on standby.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, they did the app to go.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_01]: Oh fuck oh shit, Dave.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_00]: This is not making you look good.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_00]: Talk about embarrassing.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_00]: Because, you know, all of a sudden they're just looking at me.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_00]: This is why we didn't want you to come.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_00]: It's one is biggest big moment ever, nothing comes out, no sponge, you know, whips around, fucking looks at me.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_00]: Hits the fucking button, right?
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it's so that was the button you had to do on the stage on that.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you turn everything on, right?
- 37:03[SPEAKER_00]: Everything warmed up to put it on standby.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_00]: He comes out grabs guitar, hits the switch, it's alive.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_00]: The other way, it's got to wait.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm in it for the tubes to warm up.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_01]: Warm up.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, so it wasn't on the standby.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_01]: So you had to hit the button and like, hello, I'm gonna be a minute.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, fuck.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_01]: So they sent you home.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_00]: Well, there's no way I'm going home without them paying for it.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_00]: I can't afford to fly back in Toronto.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's just too much.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's just too much.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_01]: So was it just the one gig?
- 37:32[SPEAKER_01]: So you couldn't make up for it or anything, it was awesome.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, it was it.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_00]: We don't want to off.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_00]: Bruce Allen was there.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, he's huge, yeah.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_00]: Well, because he was Paul's manager.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_00]: He got a good deal.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: He got Bruce Allen's manager.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_00]: He got Bruce Fairburn as the fucking producer.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_00]: Got a little mountain sound.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_01]: So he's right out there.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_00]: He got Brian Adams drummer.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_00]: Mickey Curry.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: So he quit Brian Adams to go.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, he just hired gun.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I see.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: I don't believe we need a drummer.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_01]: Me and a drummer, right?
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_00]: He was also hauling notes drummer.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_00]: Because a local drummer from here, Pat Stewart.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_00]: He filled in with the Adam's Summer of 69 to her because Mickey had a commitment with the whole of notes.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I see.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: We're way bigger at the time.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: And that's who he was started with, right?
- 38:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_00]: And so anyway, so Pat Stewart, he's in the Summer of 69 video.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_00]: Throw them away.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, cool.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: Right, but soon as Mickey came back, anyway, so because Pat Stewart was also our drummer for a while.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, shit, okay.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_00]: We did a tour with Canadian tour at Joe Satzriani.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_00]: A real amazing guitar guy.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I remember him.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_00]: So we did that tour and Pat was our drummer.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay, oh, cool.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_00]: But when we were coding, we had the base player from Tom Cochran and Red Rider.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_00]: And his lead rider, right?
- 38:50[SPEAKER_01]: And his lead.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_01]: Tom Cochran.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, Tom.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_01]: Not Red Rider was just Tom Cochran and then I see him.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because that's what later he just went out just to him, right?
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, the base player's wife and yet do charm.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_00]: She wrote that big hit for Tom Cochran.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_00]: Son of a little son.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_00]: Big leagues?
- 39:04[SPEAKER_00]: No, son going down.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's a kind of a bality song.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that the son go down.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: Something.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_00]: That's Elton John.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's right.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_00]: uh... yet anyway uh... you know she wrote a real big hit for him right and so he uh... he uh... website was our keyboard player in the studio to for the album okay uh... and uh... ready worst was the base player he had to some cool five string friend was base and he actually here at you know and then slide in the finger on it kind of pissed off the boys in the band
- 39:32[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, really?
- 39:32[SPEAKER_00]: Because he only got to play on a couple songs, right?
- 39:34[SPEAKER_00]: But once again, for expediency, right, cost money, you never recorded before, right?
- 39:41[SPEAKER_00]: And Fairburn, he always liked working with the same people.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_01]: So he brought him to studio artists to say, no, dude, you're not quite getting it.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to put the studio guy in.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's just quicker.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: They learn faster, because they had to learn Paul songs.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_00]: Of course they haven't been recorded right so you got to you got to work it up You know a lot of her it's what we read a I can't remember the name of the theater We were at in East Vancouver.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_00]: We were there for about I don't see a month right going through all the songs Recording them all and stuff or like you know doing like a board tape Yeah, yeah, so they guys could listen to their parts whatever and get better whatever Yeah, and then went pretty cool, right and
- 40:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so anyway, yeah, so we got the thing out and then we did the Saturday tour and then We did a bunch of other shows or whatever you got to stay on They didn't fire it because you fucked the boat the standby.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they didn't make any money No money.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_01]: No money.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the good cool life, but don't money.
- 40:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no money, right?
- 40:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's all good stories No, well, fine answer to my pocket, right, but that's kind of how I that's kind of how I've done my whole life
- 40:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, because I'm kind of curious guy right doing and learning for important in money Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 41:09[SPEAKER_00]: And, and it's kind of weird because we were over to Steve.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_01]: Do they have a falling out on some train or something?
- 41:15[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 41:38[SPEAKER_00]: And which is fine because Paul was kind of single, right?
- 41:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he wasn't like breaking anybody's heart or anything, right?
- 41:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_00]: And you should be single when you're starting out in this kind of... Oh, yeah.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, my gosh.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: The temptations are there.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_01]: They're throwing themselves out.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I could throw these.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_00]: There's a woman that when I was doing, I was doing the six nighters with Simon Chaos.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_00]: The guitar player, Kenny Chaos, or Kenny Only, who went on to do an amazing rod steward tribute thing on cruise cruise ships, big money, because he's a talented guy, right?
- 42:18[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, at some point he got a thing called something happening, something kind of dystonia in his hand here.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_01]: Oh shit.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, he couldn't
- 42:29[SPEAKER_00]: He couldn't finger-pick like he couldn't on the fretboard like he couldn't move his fingers and he wasn't wasn't happening for a while.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway yeah so anyway unfortunately things kind of ground to it all but before then he was just happening short little blonde guy yeah the girls loved him
- 42:50[SPEAKER_00]: He had so many girls waiting for him.
- 42:53[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, after this.
- 42:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like something.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_00]: Even during the show.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_00]: Because Kenny was a really good coscar player.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a lot of people.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_00]: Wanted to be guitar players, which show up and watch him.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_00]: And every now and again, he would pass his guitar to him during the set.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, yes.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_00]: And he would go back to you just one of the girls for a song or two.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_00]: and get later whatever exactly oh no kidding and then just give a guitar to someone in the crowd to cover for me and it'd be busy yeah and and the thing about Simon chaos it didn't learn any new songs oh really always yeah yeah it was the same lame old fucking songs the whole time I was with them oh is that right yeah they didn't like that's like a 12 year old aerosat long couldn't have something a little more current you know Janie's got a guns on the radio yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
- 43:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, they were mostly covered back.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, they had originals.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but they were They made felon and socials way more money by doing covers by doing the six night cover thing Right then they would have done their original music.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because you know, uh, it not not well known enough Well, exactly because you know Paul, you know even with all
- 44:00[SPEAKER_00]: the promotion behind him.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't have great album sales, you know, right?
- 44:04[SPEAKER_00]: We had like two videos on on MTV, whatever it's called, much music, right?
- 44:10[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, yeah, but there was something happened to the record company behind the scenes, which kind of
- 44:20[SPEAKER_00]: but oh Kenny chaos man he was amazing girls had come from far and why just to be with him and they knew about the other girls That wasn't an issue.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, obviously.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he would hand off the guitar and some one of you get up there and do a couple of songs right and then he come back Back to one of these dead okay, but one there was one guy wannabe who turned out to be I must say
- 44:43[SPEAKER_00]: And he was this short-haired guy.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_00]: You would never think yeah, right?
- 44:47[SPEAKER_00]: And he always showed up like we'd be up in Powell fucking river He got a fall in you guys around almost.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, his name is Norm right, okay, and unfortunately he's passed away recently.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_00]: Oh Right, you know
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: Awesome guy man.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, he just wanted to be a guitar player.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I always kind of snicker it a little bit right because he was one of many Always hangin watching Anyway, he turned out to be a somebody.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no shit.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he was getting really well known.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: He
- 45:16[SPEAKER_00]: Lot of name brand people were hiring them to go out and do really do tours.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's up.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, right?
- 45:21[SPEAKER_00]: Because most tour guys are hired guns.
- 45:23[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, is that right?
- 45:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if you yeah, like solo artists, it's all hired guns that they got right?
- 45:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they just like the themselves say.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, you know, you know, the higher the production to hire the people to play with them right?
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and then because they don't know when they're going out again.
- 45:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right?
- 45:37[SPEAKER_00]: Just on a band thing.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, everything everybody gets their cut and all right.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so anything he turned out to be a good guy, but yeah, oh Kenny, he was he was awesome, right?
- 45:46[SPEAKER_00]: And but he lost his ability to play.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_01]: Holy shit, that must have been devastating for like that.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_00]: So we ended up getting another guitar player for a while named Tim Porter out in the NIMO.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_00]: His dad was a music teacher.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't want to play rock and roll.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_00]: He wanted to play more R&B and he was a wicked wicked guitar player.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_00]: We got to sort of play with the bands playing.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, anyway, so we had an issue with our guitar player and then we had an issue with the record company.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_00]: We'd signed with a Wea Warner Electric Atlantic.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, right in can't earn a world wide in in Canada.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_00]: It was just we anyway something happened in the partnership between the labels win a way So the right and they the hierarchy change so there was nobody
- 46:32[SPEAKER_00]: that knew of this same people as I you got everybody was new to them kind of and it's like and they've written in their own people their own they got their own bands they want to write promotes and so anyway and we had just come out of white water studios where she had this really awesome stuff
- 46:50[SPEAKER_00]: that Lenny Kravitz did a couple years later that made Lenny Kravitz famous the same style genre.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_00]: It was fucking awesome.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like a timing timing, right?
- 47:00[SPEAKER_00]: And so Lenny, Lenny comes out and he sounds exactly, he's doing exactly the same music that Paul was doing two years previous.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think we still got
- 47:10[SPEAKER_00]: cassette tapes of the white water studio right yeah right we had issues with in with the with you all the sound guy by then it was getting pretty intense yeah yeah when you work with the people for a long amount of time people can get on each other's there and I think he had a little drug problem uh Joel the sound guy yeah what happens there right he got into the heavy stuff at the same drugs and rock and roll yeah that doesn't help when you're supposed to be working and you're not enough
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, it's when you're out there, man.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_00]: I tell you, anything you want, depending on who you're with, anything you want free.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, is that right?
- 47:44[SPEAKER_01]: They'll just get it for you.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like, yeah, like you come to you come to tell them on the third time.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_00]: They know exactly what you want.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_00]: They got it there for you already.
- 47:52[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_00]: And quite often you're not paying for it.
- 47:55[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, shit.
- 47:55[SPEAKER_01]: They're just like, I just let me in the show for free.
- 47:57[SPEAKER_01]: Here you go.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, no, I was saying, you know, girls are there.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, what do I do to get backstage?
- 48:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm the gatekeeper, so if I wanted to play the game that way, which I didn't, I never ever did that.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_00]: I never part took, you know, I didn't.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_00]: I was too busy doing my job.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_00]: If you're a tech guy and you want to do a good job, like I would show up at a venue if I say what
- 48:27[SPEAKER_00]: We would roll in the talent, say two o'clock in the afternoon, maybe three o'clock depending on how far we had to drive from the previous night.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_00]: And so we'd get to the venue, check it out quickly, we'd run to the hotel, we would check the band in, I had a time that there were way behind us, hours behind us.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_00]: We'd check them in and make sure the rooms are good.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: We'd throw our bags in our room and sound guy and I and the merch guy we head back to the venue, we'd unload all the stage gear,
- 48:56[SPEAKER_00]: You know, do you all up my lights if if I had to do it or if there's people on site.
- 49:00[SPEAKER_00]: We'd get my colors and get them everything aimed and focused whatever.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_00]: Then the band would come in, do their little thing.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_00]: See, hey, I'd stay at the venue the whole time because there was no insurance on our gear.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's case someone came and tried to steal some shit.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_00]: So I'd spend my whole my whole day there.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'd never leave.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_00]: But I had coffee and back then I had writers, cigarette writers.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_00]: cigarette riders.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_00]: Every place we played there was two packs of cigarettes for me.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, perfect.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_01]: So at least you got I had something.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_00]: Well with with trooper.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I couldn't got free boo is too.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, right.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_01]: But I've never been a drinker.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_00]: But I said, well, why don't we why don't
- 49:40[SPEAKER_00]: One person every week can have my share.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, right like if they get me a couple joints, you should accept Oh, I could I could have got as many joints as I want.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, I like that.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: Oh short as a part there.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_00]: There's no shorter to lead So yeah, no shorter to lead
- 49:57[SPEAKER_00]: But I was too busy.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_00]: No one's time I'd ever smoke a joint would have been after so wine down right, but it's two o'clock in the morning Yeah, so fuck right smoke one and go to fucking sleep.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's silly.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're back up at six.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah six dirty because depending on the distance we have to drive
- 50:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, no kidding.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_00]: They're doing every night in a different town, right?
- 50:15[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so sometimes we're up at 6 a.m., you know?
- 50:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but we're going to get to the next place.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, eat whatever you get going, right?
- 50:22[SPEAKER_00]: Drive there, do the same thing, right?
- 50:24[SPEAKER_00]: And it's always a different venue.
- 50:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's always different issues you're dealing with, different equipment, you know, different sound boards, lighting boards, different personnel, right?
- 50:33[SPEAKER_00]: So it's cool, man.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_00]: You should learn a lot.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_00]: And, uh,
- 50:36[SPEAKER_00]: Like I say, when you're out there on the third go around, they know you, they know exactly what you want in on all aspects, you know, and gear wise, girl wise, beer, whatever, right, you know, and if you're that way, you know, Yeah, you get it all.
- 50:49[SPEAKER_01]: You get it all right.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's a bad place for me, you know, if I'm when I was fucking young, I'd be doing it all, man.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if I if I wasn't trying to make a career out of it, yeah, I would have yeah, just yeah, but I always was trying to make a career out of it So I always wanted to be focused.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_00]: I always wanted to be alert.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_00]: I always wanted to be the guy and I and you know like the all thank me for it Like you were sad to see me leave when I left because like so finally you just said did boys.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_00]: I can't well the thing was it's just after what became a noteness.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I'm not taking anything away
- 51:19[SPEAKER_00]: But my paycheck.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like I'm not inviting.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not getting the free girls.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want them.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want the free booze Yeah, you know, I don't really want the free joints.
- 51:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's like it's so it's a lot of driving unpacking packing up fixing your gear, you know, doing the pairs
- 51:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just got to be monotonous dealing with, you know, belligerent people quite often.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_00]: But there were times when when I was first going out there, probably my third tour, because after my first tour, I said to everybody, so here, here's a deal.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want any help now.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 51:56[SPEAKER_00]: I want to do this all in my own.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_00]: Other than the, uh, the fellow that's supplying the gear, you know, to the venue.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_00]: I just want to,
- 52:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to see her sinkers swim on my own and so I learned real fast and I remember my first show I did where the crowd had an emotional response by my you know changing the color on the set.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_00]: that it was that a place called Lulu's in Kitchener, Ontario.
- 52:29[SPEAKER_00]: It was an old Walmart hill.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, like 40,000 square feet.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_00]: There's like five bars, restaurant in the venue, a huge fucking stage.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_00]: There's probably a thousand lights for me to work with.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_01]: That's pretty fun.
- 52:45[SPEAKER_00]: I had three guys.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_00]: they're the focus for me and y'all am up for me right as she was mouse if I just you're right anyway a big soundboard big lighting board anyway uh... i remember uh... we're there and uh... they're doing uh... all pretty lady and then you should need a two kind of ballad he songs right and coming into uh... they just come off like a rock and roll lively thingy right and uh... and so like i'm right on cue i got the spotlight and everything and hit the colors and and the crowd size
- 53:17[SPEAKER_00]: Literally, you can hear the crowd moan your sight, and the sound going whips over it me, and he's like, thumbs up.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like, wow man, you've got him.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_01]: That was pretty satisfying.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's going to knew I was a lighting guy.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: You got that figured out pretty fucking good.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_00]: I made the crowd do something involuntarily.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_00]: It did in plan.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's when he and I knew it.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_01]: I was doing something good going on.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_00]: To a guy named Lawrence, go go because he was their lighting god guitar tech for a lot of years, right, and it's funny Oh, yeah, and we stole my way from Trifor to do our Canadian Joe saturday tour Okay, and he never went back right, but but the folklore all Lawrence, go go, right?
- 54:04[SPEAKER_00]: So one day somewhere
- 54:08[SPEAKER_00]: at a restaurant and spitty slides in beside me, right?
- 54:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_00]: You always tease you.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_01]: You have base players on the car players, right?
- 54:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 54:18[SPEAKER_00]: And co-writer of their big hits, right?
- 54:19[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it really seems sky-like.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_00]: Keep played with like Paul Rogers from free and like...
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: serious Session guy, right?
- 54:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah anyway fucking slides in beside being and he goes, you know I just got to tell you man for years that Lawrence guy He was the fucking ticket yeah, but you
- 54:40[SPEAKER_00]: You're way beyond him.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_00]: I was just saying compliment.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_00]: Is that what?
- 54:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_00]: Because I was always a little idiot, because he was always a bit standoffish, right?
- 54:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, when he's slid in beside me and he's told me that, that I had beat the all-time guy.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 54:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't even know there's six months.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 54:57[SPEAKER_00]: And Laurench had worked his whole fucking life out of it.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so that wasn't made you feel pretty good.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so you got some good.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_00]: But the thing is, once you make it, what else is there?
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so you could do a good show every night and all of a sudden it's just like well Yeah, this is it got it kind of made got I've done it until I get more Stuff to work with I've done yeah, and and then we didn't always do like Feshial in the maritime's a lot of small venues.
- 55:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, and like one time We were in Irmath Irmath and we just did it for the meal, right?
- 55:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, yeah, and accommodations.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no shit.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, they're it
- 55:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like there's some tough times there like we're fucking hungry.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_00]: Let's do a short disperse and place the sleep before the two are starts.
- 55:40[SPEAKER_00]: You got to you got to pay Right because it was cost to fly out there about say the maritime Yeah, you got to rent the van and then you got to rent the back line it's called right That your amplifiers and all that kind of shit right the boys will bring your own guitars But there is a cost right and then there's obviously a fuel cost right truck rental cost, right
- 55:59[SPEAKER_00]: And you got to pay the band, hey, and you got to pay the text.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_00]: So we need to have a show every night.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_00]: For nothing else, and to get the free accommodations, and the free one meal.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just to keep going to the next time.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_01]: Make some money to pay them.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, wrote in fucking your myth.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, it's a fucking shit.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_00]: The fucking stage isn't bigger than this room, Ryan.
- 56:25[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no shit.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_00]: No shit.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_00]: I had 10.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_01]: Can't ten lights can light and yeah, so it knows this things about I think it's 14 feet long by 28 feet wide Yeah, it's pretty small stage.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I don't think it was this one to this wall like I'm taking the bench to here Oh, you're kidding.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_00]: I'm serious, but this hand 10 by third and yeah, and this depth because I drummer the bass keyboard Yeah, that's super tight anyway, and just like ten lights She'd supply with right and I got ten lights
- 57:00[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, I actually made a show out of it because the the the singer Ray McGuire cool guy very cool guy, right?
- 57:09[SPEAKER_00]: Very understanding man, right?
- 57:10[SPEAKER_00]: He comes up to me.
- 57:10[SPEAKER_00]: It was Dave.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_00]: That was fucking awesome.
- 57:12[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, right.
- 57:13[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe he made something out of that
- 57:16[SPEAKER_00]: Because most guys are with a sat down and smoke the cigarette all night.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a good one spot later.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, you're a little flicking and dicking and you know, right?
- 57:20[SPEAKER_00]: How did you something?
- 57:20[SPEAKER_01]: I couldn't just let them die.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_00]: Let's hear a response of all right?
- 57:22[SPEAKER_00]: You can pay the credit for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the show for the
- 57:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a lot of fun, right?
- 57:37[SPEAKER_01]: Back to that MTV training that girl over catch Paul was he was chasing me around.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_00]: Erika, I don't know what ever happened with Erika and him.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_00]: You'd have to ask him, right?
- 57:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it was a long time ago.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking 92.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_01]: It was Adam Curry there too, I wonder.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Adam Curry from MTV?
- 57:55[SPEAKER_00]: Nope.
- 57:56[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, he does the podcast, one of the podcast I really listen to is Noah Jenner.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I had a great he invented podcasts and he they call them the pod father It was his whole idea, but he was always a big long-haired guy.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_01]: He was on MTV for quite a few years Well, no, I did not.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, no, no, they have a good podcast him and John C to work But unfortunately John C to work.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_01]: He just died there like three weeks or a month ago Oh, I didn't know the blue man.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, he had heart surgery and then then yeah
- 58:33[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I just really like the John guy, but it's hard to listen to now.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_01]: They got a couple other guys cover and right until they get the thing done.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, he was big on that MTV.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_01]: He was on there too, I'll have to look that up, the MTV train.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean there's some interview.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_01]: Well, was that a bunch of bans just traveling across the country doing the show?
- 58:50[SPEAKER_01]: What was your something?
- 58:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they'd stop and they'd open up the side stage and they'd go do a couple of songs whatever and then go to the next town or whatever.
- 58:59[SPEAKER_00]: It was a big promotional stunt, you know?
- 59:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for MTV and the few bands, I guess.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, just whoever was ever.
- 59:06[SPEAKER_00]: I can't remember who was all on there back then.
- 59:08[SPEAKER_00]: Sas Jordan was probably on it back then.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_00]: Um, uh, before Atlantis Morisat for sure, unless it was her little pop song, which I had right before before she became a rock star.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, well she had the one album that was huge.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_01]: Jagged a little bit.
- 59:24[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah.
- 59:24[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then, uh, but did she do it?
- 59:27[SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember if she did another album that wasn't as good.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that album was so fucking huge.
- 59:32[SPEAKER_01]: We drove up.
- 59:32[SPEAKER_01]: We went skiing up at 8 back to Alpine up in Pentectin there.
- 59:36[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and we did this road trip and we listened that CD all the way up all the way back is this oh that's one of those albums that almost every song is fucking good
- 59:46[SPEAKER_01]: meant rare and never to be repeated yeah exactly you can't you can't it's almost a curse yeah you have such a good animal how do you and then everybody will expect another every song is awesome and it's never gonna happen the Eagles Hotel California yeah that whole album was pretty good and along around comes out and yeah pretty much all
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_00]: quarter the sales rumours comes out and then tusk a quarter the sales yeah yeah exactly that rumours too i had that see the as a oh over listen at the change i had it i had it in eight tracks yeah
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_00]: in my 73-old cutlist to our hard talk.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_00]: What song cut hope when it changed to one of the- I don't know, but I know on, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, what's, uh, dream stream streams, uh, lights in the valley, uh, chill a whack.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, California girl, uh, it changes in the middle of that song.
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_00]: I remember that, right?
- 1:00:41[SPEAKER_01]: I fucking, they hold the eight tracks, a path to people that are listed, but we don't know when to fucking eight tracks.
- 1:00:45[SPEAKER_01]: Well, look at that, we're no leave.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_00]: Look it up.
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, look it up.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_01]: But I remember as a kid, I had that.

- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's just bringing back memories, like, dockin' and boondovey, like, oh, a ship from my time, you know?
- 1:02:16[SPEAKER_01]: And a black Sabbath.
- 1:02:18[SPEAKER_01]: So very first cassette, every black Sabbath, black Sabbath, which was crazy on them.
- 1:02:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, it was the weird music, you know?
- 1:02:27[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I wouldn't call it heavy metal, it was, you know, it was like, it's like, hold that heavy rock.
- 1:02:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I got it in that heavy rock, and Ozzy, you know?
- 1:02:35[SPEAKER_01]: And then,
- 1:02:37[SPEAKER_01]: And then my first record I ever bought was before that cassette was Boston don't look back because I was about 7 and I'm in the Stenman's in Parksell and I go look it through the records because there was Grimm Grimm Grimm Grimm Grimm in records at the end of the were the like the kids, right?
- 1:02:52[SPEAKER_01]: The team the only light in Parksell, the only light in Parksell, the only light in the day, yeah.
- 1:02:57[SPEAKER_01]: People can't believe that now I counted the other day for all of them in Parksell to the other side of Parksell.
- 1:03:02[SPEAKER_01]: The last time I got it I think it was 18 or 19 lights now now they've added that one down by the Windsor plywood in French Creek So there's an extra one and that one got it boxed me up and it really slows the traffic down now I don't like it kind of needed it there though then that flashing red and flashing amber for fucking 34 years It's dangerous now there's a lot of people that live down and that's something vision.
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah
- 1:03:28[SPEAKER_00]: Hills of Columbia.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, it's like a lot.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I mean, Stamins, I'm just a little kid and I'm just looking at the records and then there's that Boston Don't look back with them.
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_01]: It looks like a UFO.
- 1:03:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's part of your home, but it's actually the guitar, right?
- 1:03:42[SPEAKER_01]: And you can see the neck.
- 1:03:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just a kid and I'm like
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm fucking cool looking.
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_01]: I have a little bit of money that I think of three bucks or something and I fucking go up and I buy this fucking out.
- 1:03:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm digging home.
- 1:03:52[SPEAKER_01]: My parents record blaring.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_01]: Holy fucking it.
- 1:03:55[SPEAKER_01]: I listen to that record so much, started skipping.
- 1:03:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I like to almost all the songs, both sides.
- 1:04:01[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm like playing this record and start to skip skip.
- 1:04:03[SPEAKER_01]: So then I go, oh, you know what?
- 1:04:04[SPEAKER_01]: And a little bit of weight on there.
- 1:04:06[SPEAKER_01]: I put a penny.
- 1:04:07[SPEAKER_01]: I remember, put a penny on the needle.
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_01]: And okay.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_01]: And then that would start to wear off a bit,
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_01]: Six panties and it still worked it, but it was like all of a sudden hit caught and it crossed the album On an angle and it was fucked because now you got a fucking crew.
- 1:04:28[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, you're done It was over so I could only listen to the other side, but I wore that fucker out I think I've still got the fucking album got because it was a double album cover So here a kid you can look at it for it.
- 1:04:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, all the guys playing the guitars and then the drums and shit and then it was cool And that brought dope that guy was unbelievable
- 1:04:44[SPEAKER_01]: like three octave range man like you try singing that uh... that song is see my marion walk it away you know and try and say it it's impossible like it i can do do octaves but that's three octave thing it's it's impossible i got caught by nine victoria the world ship base or a golfing down there we go down and play games at it and go out at night and just get all ripped up and then go from sunday and come home
- 1:05:07[SPEAKER_01]: and there's this guy just with a guitar and people are telling me to sing something when I said you play this Boston song and more than feeling that's the one and he's like, I didn't think he could do it and he's like okay fine and he fucking did it and I'm waiting for that part and he fucking hit it and I know that's pretty impressive
- 1:05:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's pretty impressive.
- 1:05:27[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah.
- 1:05:27[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah.
- 1:05:28[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of mental health issues in here.
- 1:05:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well he took his life.
- 1:05:34[SPEAKER_00]: So he took his life.
- 1:05:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's a shame.
- 1:05:36[SPEAKER_01]: He's a talented fucking guy.
- 1:05:38[SPEAKER_01]: But that's another guy that they found the new singer, the guy's kids, the guy that's the singer now.
- 1:05:45[SPEAKER_01]: Apparently he would be in the kitchen doing dishes or cooking and fucking around and he would be singing.
- 1:05:50[SPEAKER_01]: these Boston songs and he had the three Oscar frames you could hit them all wow they secretly recorded them his kids and maybe the wife and they wrote and they sent the sample to Boston and like here listen to this and they actually fucking they hired the guy wow that's crazy yeah yeah and he had no idea they did this all of a sudden he's getting these phone calls from Boston like what the band say yeah we want you to come home we want you to come home
- 1:06:21[SPEAKER_01]: different.
- 1:06:22[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 1:06:23[SPEAKER_01]: We fucking ate up that hour like a thousand man.
- 1:06:25[SPEAKER_01]: Holy fucking good story.
- 1:06:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's a good life story.
- 1:06:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I still got more.
- 1:06:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you'll come back again.
- 1:06:33[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, exactly.
- 1:06:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's cool too, though.
- 1:06:41[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah.
- 1:06:42[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let's go.
- 1:06:43[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully there's some rock fans out there they can listen to what we talked about tonight.
