- 0:53what's up sarah jody lynn
- 0:55ah good to have you all
- 0:56here good to be back home
- 0:58Good to be back home.
- 1:01Flew in from Montana yesterday.
- 1:05Had a layover in Denver.
- 1:07Man, insane.
- 1:10I had, it was a fifty minute layover.
- 1:13Gate to gate.
- 1:14It told me it was a twenty
- 1:15four minute walk.
- 1:18So I'm hustling through.
- 1:20missed a turn on the signs
- 1:22to get from um b to a um so
- 1:26did about an extra thirty
- 1:28gates of walking um then re
- 1:33redirected got over to my
- 1:35right gate I was the last
- 1:37one on the plane right
- 1:38before the door closed but
- 1:40thank god we made it and
- 1:42then when we landed in
- 1:43columbus I have never
- 1:45landed in a plane so hard in my life
- 1:48It hit the ground on the
- 1:49runway and all of the
- 1:51baggage compartments popped open.
- 1:55It landed so hard.
- 1:57It was completely insane.
- 2:03But so glad to be back here.
- 2:05Got to see my wife for the
- 2:06first time in five days.
- 2:10And it was good to be with her.
- 2:12She was really bummed she
- 2:12couldn't come with us on this trip.
- 2:16But yeah.
- 2:19Ken Walters is on a nine hour,
- 2:21ten and a half hour drive
- 2:22with stops this morning.
- 2:24I don't envy that after what
- 2:25I've just been through.
- 2:27Sarah Cooper,
- 2:27anything under an hour and a
- 2:29half layover is too risky for me.
- 2:31I agree.
- 2:32Because it was a fifty
- 2:33minute layover from the
- 2:35time I got off the plane to
- 2:36the time the plane took off.
- 2:38Not when it boarded, but when it took off.
- 2:41And I, like I said, I barely,
- 2:43barely made it.
- 2:44I was the last person on.
- 2:47was crazy but we're here
- 2:49we're home we're safe for
- 2:51sound it's all good um and
- 2:54glad that I got to spend
- 2:57some really quality time
- 2:58with my daughter um had
- 3:00some good talks on the trip
- 3:02which we haven't been able
- 3:03to do in a long time and
- 3:04she called last night
- 3:05yesterday was her first day
- 3:06of work at the new place
- 3:09and she's already doing
- 3:10awesome and uh which I knew
- 3:12she would so I'm so happy for her
- 3:16But the one thing that,
- 3:19this is one interesting
- 3:20fact that I learned.
- 3:22The population of the entire
- 3:24state of Montana is less
- 3:28than the population of the
- 3:29county where Columbus, Ohio is.
- 3:33So there's more people in Franklin County,
- 3:36Ohio, where Columbus is the center of,
- 3:39than there is in the entire
- 3:40state of Washington.
- 3:42Not Washington, Montana.
- 3:44Entire state of Montana.
- 3:46That is insane.
- 3:49So she's going from living
- 3:50in a pretty decent-sized
- 3:52city to a state with not
- 3:57very much population.
- 3:59So that is fun.
- 4:04What I wanted to get into today,
- 4:05and I am exhausted.
- 4:06I will...
- 4:08I've had a hard time keeping
- 4:09my eyes open at work this morning.
- 4:13Every time I do this,
- 4:14like these long trips, I'm like,
- 4:16I should take an extra day
- 4:17off just to chill.
- 4:19But I am really struggling
- 4:21to keep my eyes open today.
- 4:25Got to throw my dart.
- 4:26Got to be like Dave.
- 4:30Not too bad.
- 4:31Actually,
- 4:33maybe an inch and a half from the
- 4:34bullseye on the sixteen.
- 4:38so right height just need to
- 4:40go a little left little
- 4:42right little left right
- 4:44right so um yeah good shot
- 4:51good shot today um wow good
- 4:54question denise uh scott
- 4:57have you thought about
- 4:58retiring in a different state
- 5:00So I've lived in three states in my life.
- 5:02I lived in Pennsylvania growing up.
- 5:04I moved to Florida and
- 5:05worked there for four years.
- 5:07And then I've lived in Ohio
- 5:09the rest of my life.
- 5:11My wife and I have actually
- 5:12talked about it.
- 5:15But the current value of my
- 5:16home and what I owe on it
- 5:18were within ten years of retirement.
- 5:22If we sell off our home,
- 5:24we would have a lot of money to pay
- 5:29without any interest,
- 5:30without anything going on in the, in the,
- 5:33in its current state, um,
- 5:36we would have enough for
- 5:37about ten years of rent in
- 5:39a decent community.
- 5:43Um,
- 5:44And we have really nothing
- 5:45holding us here in Ohio.
- 5:48I love the people.
- 5:49I love my friends.
- 5:51But if my daughter is half a country away,
- 5:55I'd rather be closer to her
- 5:56than closer to, I don't know.
- 6:00I don't know.
- 6:02We've really thought about it.
- 6:03We have thought about moving
- 6:06closer to wherever my
- 6:07daughter kind of settles
- 6:10after retirement.
- 6:12my wife was thirty five when
- 6:13she had my daughter so we
- 6:15had kids later in life and
- 6:18um yeah I think that it's
- 6:21realistic that we will
- 6:23probably move after
- 6:25retirement uh ken says my
- 6:32attempt was invalid not in
- 6:33the video um yeah
- 6:38I do think I'm going to hook
- 6:38up a little camera to the dartboard, um,
- 6:41and bring it on for when I,
- 6:43when I throw my dart.
- 6:44Um,
- 6:45and then I can use it for other things
- 6:47too.
- 6:47Uh, but I gotta, I gotta figure that out.
- 6:51And I've been too busy with other things.
- 6:54Uh,
- 6:54this weekend at my mom's eightieth
- 6:56birthday is actually tomorrow.
- 6:58No, it's actually Thursday.
- 7:01My mom's eightieth birthday is Thursday.
- 7:04And, um,
- 7:07And then we're having an
- 7:07eightieth birthday party
- 7:09for her in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
- 7:11So I've got to hop in the car,
- 7:12drive four hours for that,
- 7:13drive four hours back.
- 7:14And then my wife is having
- 7:15her second knee surgery next Tuesday.
- 7:20So it's going to be a busy few weeks here.
- 7:24Denise,
- 7:24we're at a crossroads to California
- 7:27is too expensive right now.
- 7:28Yeah.
- 7:29See,
- 7:29we live in one of the best school
- 7:31districts in the country
- 7:32and we pay for that.
- 7:33The property taxes where I live are awful.
- 7:37maybe the same if not more
- 7:39than my mortgage payment.
- 7:42And so if we could get rid
- 7:44of that tax payment and pay
- 7:47rent somewhere after we sold the house,
- 7:52that is really realistic to move.
- 7:58So see ya.
- 8:04I'm with you.
- 8:06I am with you.
- 8:07So I watched Dave's Weekend
- 8:08Review this morning.
- 8:09I know it was yesterday,
- 8:11but I watched it this morning.
- 8:12And first,
- 8:13huge shout out to Kat yesterday
- 8:14for taking over the lunch show.
- 8:17I'm glad that she hopped on
- 8:18and kept it going.
- 8:19So we had one on Monday.
- 8:22I didn't think we would.
- 8:23But I think I'm going to start doing that,
- 8:25looking for guest hosts to
- 8:27pop on so we don't miss a
- 8:29day and have someone just
- 8:32take it over for the day.
- 8:35um rather than like just not
- 8:38have one so I I really
- 8:40liked it I watched it when
- 8:42I got off the plane last
- 8:44yesterday and she was
- 8:45awesome and if you have not
- 8:47been following her catching
- 8:49feelings um it was very
- 8:51much like that um and I
- 8:52thought she did an awesome
- 8:53job so let's get into
- 8:56dave's week in review
- 8:58A couple big highlights that
- 8:59came out of it for me.
- 9:01And again, I forgot my notes upstairs,
- 9:02so I'm doing this off memory.
- 9:05Dave announced in the weekend review,
- 9:09because of the smaller
- 9:11field of thirty and twenty,
- 9:14there will be less heats to
- 9:15get through during the day.
- 9:17And because of that,
- 9:18most likely there will not
- 9:19be cuts at the CrossFit Games.
- 9:23I am not a fan of the cuts.
- 9:25I think that there are
- 9:29people that can affect the
- 9:31scores and leaderboard from
- 9:33beginning to end.
- 9:34And when you cut,
- 9:35you mess that up and it
- 9:38makes the comeback nearly
- 9:40impossible later in the weekend.
- 9:43So I am glad that there are
- 9:45no cuts at the CrossFit Games.
- 9:47He did not say that was a
- 9:48one hundred percent certainty,
- 9:50but he said as of this moment,
- 9:51there will be no cuts at
- 9:53the CrossFit Games.
- 9:55He also talked about the
- 9:58programming being.
- 10:00Nope,
- 10:03the programming being eighty percent
- 10:05penciled in and that he's
- 10:06actually already started testing the.
- 10:12the workouts um and so he is
- 10:16probably going to dive more
- 10:17into the testing aspect of
- 10:18the workouts now that
- 10:20eighty percent is done uh
- 10:22getting ready for that and
- 10:25then he went into um denise
- 10:30says cut no cuts is good
- 10:32news andrew stan no no
- 10:34reason for cuts if there's
- 10:35only thirty people
- 10:37Yeah, I mean,
- 10:38he was doing the math kind of
- 10:39in his head during the week in review.
- 10:41When there's forty athletes,
- 10:43that's four heats.
- 10:45That's eight heats for the whole thing.
- 10:47And then and then you add in
- 10:50the three heats of teams.
- 10:52That's eleven heats per event.
- 10:55Now they're going to be down
- 10:56to eight heats per event.
- 10:59with um three three sets of
- 11:02ten times two and then the
- 11:04two heats for the the teams
- 11:08so he um there's no reason
- 11:12for the cuts you're right
- 11:14andrew completely I'm
- 11:18having this thing happen
- 11:19with my coffee cup where
- 11:21the heat from the coffee is
- 11:23so high it's popping my lid out
- 11:26And it has like a vent hole in there,
- 11:28but I don't.
- 11:30There it is.
- 11:30See,
- 11:31like it pops up in the back like that.
- 11:34And so I'm trying to have a sit,
- 11:38but it just keeps popping off.
- 11:44Sarah says,
- 11:45in affiliate semifinal workouts
- 11:46look painful.
- 11:49They do.
- 11:49Anything with a thirty minute AMRAP.
- 11:51I mean, my God.
- 11:53Yeah.
- 11:55That just looks brutal.
- 11:56But I've never been like a...
- 12:01a guy who completely
- 12:03understands the programming.
- 12:05I try to,
- 12:06but when I talk to like Carolyn and Jamie,
- 12:10they are so much better at
- 12:12looking at programming than
- 12:14I am that I'd really just
- 12:16defer to their expertise at this point.
- 12:20Lex is really good too, Carolyn's wife.
- 12:23She is so good at dissecting programming.
- 12:29But anyway,
- 12:33I think they're really good
- 12:34workouts I watched
- 12:35hillary's video today going
- 12:36through it all and how uh
- 12:40it it's really back to like
- 12:42a very good crossfit
- 12:45overall fitness type
- 12:46workout uh for these in
- 12:48affiliates and it's really
- 12:49going to determine uh who
- 12:51appropriate appropriately
- 12:53should be going to the games
- 12:58And again,
- 12:58I'm going to defer to the people
- 13:00who understand that much
- 13:01better than I do.
- 13:03I can look at it and see
- 13:04that it has a lot of variety.
- 13:06It has a lot of good tests.
- 13:11So I'm anxious to see what happens.
- 13:13I actually need to get into
- 13:14my Heat One app and make my
- 13:16picks as to who's going to
- 13:17qualify in those eleven positions.
- 13:20Now that I've had some time
- 13:22to kind of look at the workouts.
- 13:25And I highly encourage you
- 13:26guys to do the Heat One app.
- 13:27It's so much fun,
- 13:29and it gives us something
- 13:30to talk about on the show for sure.
- 13:32So if you're not already,
- 13:34go download Heat One app
- 13:36and pick your – I think
- 13:39there's a game that you
- 13:40pick the eleven people you
- 13:41think are going to qualify
- 13:43on the men's and women's side.
- 13:46So I haven't dove into that yet.
- 13:49Maybe we'll talk about that
- 13:50a little bit tomorrow with
- 13:51Corey because I know he
- 13:52plays along with that as well.
- 13:58So Dave did talk about the running.
- 14:01He called it experiment in
- 14:03the team series.
- 14:05And my only issue with what
- 14:10he was talking about is he
- 14:12talked about how you would
- 14:15hope that six people wouldn't cheat.
- 14:18And he went into depth about
- 14:20the cheating aspect of the
- 14:22run event for the teams.
- 14:26But nowhere in that
- 14:27conversation did he talk
- 14:28about the fairness and
- 14:31equity of the running
- 14:33workout in the teams.
- 14:35As Carolyn pointed out so
- 14:37well on Sunday night and
- 14:40probably the Sunday night before,
- 14:42is that if you're in the
- 14:43basement of an affiliate
- 14:45and have to run up the stairs,
- 14:47or if you're in the middle
- 14:48of a city and have to go
- 14:49out into traffic to do your run,
- 14:53Not everybody's eight
- 14:54hundred meters is going to be the same.
- 14:57If you're in Canada and it's
- 14:58still snowing.
- 14:59I mean,
- 15:00I was in Montana and there was
- 15:01still snow on the ground in
- 15:03parts of Montana.
- 15:05So I'm sure that if you're up in Canada,
- 15:07there are parts that are
- 15:08still snow covered.
- 15:11And then if you're in Florida,
- 15:12you have a nice,
- 15:13beautiful day to go run on.
- 15:16Or storms come in that
- 15:17weekend and you have to run in the rain.
- 15:20It just doesn't make it
- 15:21equitable for every team.
- 15:24Now,
- 15:24looking at the list of the twenty
- 15:26qualifiers at this point
- 15:28that's unofficial, it looks like,
- 15:31you know, the big dogs all got in.
- 15:37So, it doesn't look like it affected much.
- 15:40But who knows?
- 15:43The way it sounds,
- 15:44it's kind of convoluted
- 15:45that Boz says that at the
- 15:48conclusion of the event,
- 15:49the scores are official.
- 15:51And...
- 15:53That means unless CrossFit
- 15:55initiates a review by requesting a video,
- 15:59none of this is going to be
- 16:00viewed or reviewed.
- 16:03And the twenty that are
- 16:04there are the twenty that are getting in.
- 16:07So unless CrossFit initiates that.
- 16:13That review,
- 16:15nothing's going to happen with these.
- 16:18So
- 16:23I don't know.
- 16:25He did explain that the
- 16:26reason they did it with
- 16:27team is because it affects
- 16:29the least amount of people
- 16:30to run the experiment,
- 16:33which does make sense.
- 16:36And speaking of experiments,
- 16:39he talked about the online
- 16:40video review from the
- 16:41Masters and that they've
- 16:43already made changes based
- 16:44on suggestions.
- 16:46And with the affiliate
- 16:50qualifier this weekend for
- 16:51the individuals,
- 16:53if you review the video and
- 16:55you give it a thumbs down,
- 16:57you have to give a comment as to why.
- 17:02That will change everything.
- 17:07Um, and without a comment, the down,
- 17:12the debt thumbs down will not register.
- 17:15So you're going to have to
- 17:16give a comment as to why
- 17:18you are giving a thumbs
- 17:19down to a workout for it to take.
- 17:24Uh, Andrew, I don't,
- 17:31I think he said it's going
- 17:32to start with the individuals.
- 17:36Um,
- 17:37that they learned from the
- 17:40age groups that they need
- 17:41to have a comment section.
- 17:44So I think it's starting this, well,
- 17:47when they conclude on Sunday night,
- 17:51and then they start the review on Monday,
- 17:55you're going to have to
- 17:55have a comment in that
- 17:57section moving forward.
- 18:00I hope so.
- 18:02Because I think it's, if not with the,
- 18:07With these athletes,
- 18:08it's going to be a lot harder,
- 18:10and you're going to need the comment.
- 18:15Corey said, good,
- 18:15some common sense for once.
- 18:19Yeah.
- 18:22And if it does happen this week...
- 18:26then that is showing me that
- 18:27CrossFit is learning from
- 18:28past mistakes and making
- 18:30the corrections as soon as they can.
- 18:32This is not a correction in
- 18:35how fitness is tested.
- 18:36This is a correction on the
- 18:38process and making sure
- 18:40that they get it right.
- 18:41And it's not affecting
- 18:43anybody else but the individuals.
- 18:46So if you add that component to it,
- 18:47you're not...
- 18:48You're not hurting anybody
- 18:50else previously or anything like that.
- 18:54So I think if you can make the change now,
- 18:56make the change now.
- 19:00And I think they realized
- 19:03that they were reviewing a
- 19:04lot of the age groups that
- 19:06didn't need reviewed
- 19:07because they were getting
- 19:07downstroked and there was
- 19:09no reason for it.
- 19:12And so I think that they're
- 19:14looking at it as a savings in their time.
- 19:17When they go back to review these,
- 19:19they'll see the reasons why,
- 19:21and they can make a better
- 19:23determination as to what if
- 19:25they should or should not
- 19:26have to go further with the review.
- 19:31So I think that is awesome.
- 19:36speaking of some changes
- 19:37like in the week in review
- 19:38he announced that they
- 19:41might they it looks like
- 19:42they're going to be
- 19:43partnering with ruck race
- 19:45usa which I guess dave took
- 19:47part into an event um where
- 19:51you rocked as far as you
- 19:52could in an hour with
- 19:53twenty percent of your body
- 19:54weight in the ruck um and
- 19:57dave took part in that
- 19:59And their finals are going
- 20:01to be run at the CrossFit Games.
- 20:03They're working on a
- 20:03partnership with them to do that.
- 20:06I think that's awesome.
- 20:08Seeing these types of
- 20:08partnerships show me a
- 20:11change in the willingness
- 20:13to work with others.
- 20:15They've also announced,
- 20:17if you did not see...
- 20:20that they are partnering
- 20:21with mayhem to do the uh
- 20:26everyday heroes or what
- 20:28they call the occupational
- 20:29games um together as a
- 20:33cohesive unit and they're
- 20:35going to hold those uh in
- 20:37november december
- 20:39where you'll do an online
- 20:41part portion in your occupation.
- 20:43And then in December,
- 20:45the top athletes will be
- 20:46invited for a competition.
- 20:48And I believe that's gonna be at Mayhem.
- 20:54And so that includes firefighters,
- 20:57educators, first responders, police,
- 21:03and CrossFit and Mayhem are
- 21:05combining and partnering on that.
- 21:08And that to me shows some
- 21:10advancement in the thinking
- 21:12with CrossFit doing these
- 21:14partnerships as opposed to
- 21:15trying to do it all themselves.
- 21:21So, Howzit says,
- 21:26great move from CrossFit HQ
- 21:27for partnerships and no cuts.
- 21:30Amen to both.
- 21:32Jody Lynn says, oh, that's cool.
- 21:34It is, it is cool.
- 21:37Now mayhem in their version,
- 21:39and Carolyn and I were
- 21:40talking about this last night,
- 21:42mayhem in their version,
- 21:43they brought them in and
- 21:44they put like all the
- 21:45firefighters on one team,
- 21:47all the police officers on another team,
- 21:49all the medical on another team,
- 21:51and then they put them up
- 21:52against each other in a competition.
- 21:54What she's hoping for as an educator is,
- 21:58is that it becomes like just
- 21:59an overall competition for
- 22:02them to become the best of
- 22:03the best with some individual stuff.
- 22:08So we don't know the details
- 22:10of that because CrossFit was always,
- 22:15they named the fittest medical,
- 22:18the fittest police officer,
- 22:19the fittest military,
- 22:20the fittest whatever that might be.
- 22:25Mayhem always did this thing
- 22:27with a team competition at the end.
- 22:29So it's going to be
- 22:30interesting to see which
- 22:31direction they go in this
- 22:33partnership for the final.
- 22:38Dan Church,
- 22:39I'd love to make the occupational games.
- 22:41Just wish they had to show
- 22:42proof of employment.
- 22:44Well,
- 22:44now that it's an in-person competition,
- 22:46maybe they do.
- 22:51Yeah.
- 22:53And then he says, yeah,
- 22:54Indy would be more fun, I think.
- 22:57Yeah.
- 22:58Both of them have their, like,
- 23:00as a spectator,
- 23:01what I kind of want to see.
- 23:04Because I could see, like,
- 23:05police wanting to beat fire,
- 23:07fire wanting to beat police.
- 23:08That's a traditional rivalry
- 23:10that's as old as time, right?
- 23:15Um,
- 23:16so I think that there would be some fun
- 23:18in that,
- 23:19but when you're not really even
- 23:20meeting each other till you
- 23:21get there in the space,
- 23:23I think it'd be better if
- 23:26it was like an individual
- 23:27competition and maybe secondarily,
- 23:30you keep track of points
- 23:32and see how each individual
- 23:34occupation is doing,
- 23:35but you're competing individually.
- 23:39Because you're not made to be a team.
- 23:40You're not practicing as a team.
- 23:44It would make more sense to
- 23:45do it as individual athletes.
- 23:50But that's just me kind of
- 23:51spitballing off the top of my head.
- 23:56So.
- 23:58Well, we had.
- 24:02We had.
- 24:04We had a lot of comments
- 24:05from the Sunday night show.
- 24:07We had a lot of engagement
- 24:09and a lot of people watching Sunday night,
- 24:11which was awesome.
- 24:14But a couple of comments I
- 24:15just wanted to kind of address.
- 24:17And I'm getting a lot of
- 24:18these either through DMs or
- 24:20through YouTube comments
- 24:23that Lucy Campbell is going
- 24:24to win the CrossFit Games
- 24:26or that Lucy Campbell is going to podium.
- 24:31And I just want to put...
- 24:35I just want to put this out there.
- 24:37I love Lucy Campbell.
- 24:39If she won the games,
- 24:40I would not be heartbroken.
- 24:41I would be very, very excited.
- 24:44But one thing I've learned
- 24:45in watching this sport for
- 24:47all the years that I've
- 24:48watched this sport is the
- 24:49programming leading up to
- 24:51the games is very different
- 24:53than the programming at the games.
- 24:55The programming at other
- 24:56competitions like Guadalupe
- 24:58is very different than the
- 24:59CrossFit games.
- 25:04so just because lucy is
- 25:06having an awesome season by
- 25:08winning wadapalooza by
- 25:09winning wadland fest all of
- 25:12that stuff it's awesome it
- 25:16does not mean that she has
- 25:19closed all of her holes at
- 25:21the crossfit games now she
- 25:24is a former collegiate
- 25:25swimmer so the swimming
- 25:27aspects if they do that at
- 25:28the games she will be fine in but
- 25:32where her holes have always
- 25:33been is in pure strength.
- 25:36If they're odd object strength implements,
- 25:39she's probably going to
- 25:40struggle more than she has
- 25:42in other events leading up to the games.
- 25:47So,
- 25:50and she has been out of the sport for
- 25:52three years because of a wrist injury.
- 25:55So it's,
- 25:57how is she going to perform on the
- 25:58biggest stage with the
- 25:59brightest lights and
- 26:01Her first time back in three years.
- 26:03Now her first games three years ago,
- 26:04she won two events.
- 26:06So she does have the
- 26:07capability of doing some
- 26:09big things at the games.
- 26:10Winning them is another story.
- 26:14Cause I have fallen in love
- 26:15with athletes leading up to
- 26:17the games and then they get
- 26:19there and it's a struggle.
- 26:22So I'm just pumping the
- 26:24brakes a little bit on Lucy.
- 26:27I do think she's a great athlete.
- 26:29I do think she's going to be
- 26:30fun to watch and she'll
- 26:32probably win a few events,
- 26:35but to put it all together
- 26:36in one package on that
- 26:37weekend in a very wide open
- 26:40women's division is going
- 26:42to be going to be tough.
- 26:47And she's going to be
- 26:50competing against the best
- 26:51field she's ever competed against.
- 26:54Wadapalooza is a very
- 26:55stacked field generally,
- 26:57but it isn't the games.
- 26:59Wadland Fest had some good athletes in it.
- 27:02It is not the lineup at the games.
- 27:05And every second is going to
- 27:07matter during those times.
- 27:09So...
- 27:10could she do it sure just
- 27:12saying pump the brakes
- 27:14because I've seen a lot of
- 27:16people kill kill the lead
- 27:19up to the games and when
- 27:20they get there it's a
- 27:21completely different animal
- 27:24so just that um some other
- 27:28people make comments about um us kind of
- 27:35insinuating that we were
- 27:36ripping on Brian Friend for
- 27:40his coverage at Wadland Fest.
- 27:43In no way was I trying to
- 27:44rip on Brian for his coverage.
- 27:46I thought he did a great job
- 27:48as a one-man crew doing everything.
- 27:51And I was trying to point
- 27:52out that he was doing everything.
- 27:54He was camera operator.
- 27:55He was play-by-play.
- 27:57He was color commentating.
- 27:59He was producing.
- 28:01He was directing,
- 28:03like trying to do all that on his own.
- 28:04And he did a really nice job with it all.
- 28:08But all I was saying was,
- 28:11I don't want us to settle
- 28:13that that is what is
- 28:15acceptable moving forward for everything.
- 28:18I want the major events to
- 28:22have a handful of people
- 28:25doing this thing.
- 28:27And all I was saying is he
- 28:28said on Froning's podcast,
- 28:30he can do it for five grand.
- 28:32Well,
- 28:33maybe charge ten or fifteen grand and
- 28:36just add a few more people to the crew.
- 28:40just so you have a couple
- 28:41more camera angles and
- 28:42maybe a second voice.
- 28:44So it's not just one voice
- 28:45for the entire weekend.
- 28:47That was it.
- 28:48I'm not trying to rip on Brian.
- 28:50I think he did a great job
- 28:51and we got to watch it.
- 28:53And which lately there are a
- 28:57lot of competitions.
- 28:58We do not have to,
- 29:00we do not get the opportunity to watch.
- 29:04So take Brian's name out of it.
- 29:07I just think it needs to be
- 29:08a production with more than one person.
- 29:11So,
- 29:12and I've seen a lot of these
- 29:15competitions where I go to
- 29:16the competition and they
- 29:18spend so much money on
- 29:19things that don't matter like signage.
- 29:24If you're not streaming this
- 29:25thing and if you're not and
- 29:27nobody gets to see it,
- 29:28why are you wasting money on signage?
- 29:32when that money could be
- 29:33budgeted into like a ten or fifteen grand,
- 29:36give to Brian or give to
- 29:38Savon or give to Hiller or
- 29:41whoever wants to do this
- 29:43and let them do a broadcast
- 29:45of the event with a handful of people.
- 29:51Then when you start doing
- 29:53that and people start watching,
- 29:55then you can sell advertising,
- 29:56you can sell other things
- 29:57for this and then the signage matters.
- 30:02But if nobody is able to tune in and watch,
- 30:05having the coolest looking
- 30:06sign does not matter.
- 30:12So I'm digging more on the
- 30:13event coordinators and the
- 30:16way they're budgeting their
- 30:17money when the live stream is key,
- 30:20as Craig says.
- 30:24We have to keep live
- 30:26streaming in some way.
- 30:28And I was commending Brian
- 30:30for the job he did at
- 30:31Wildland Fest by himself.
- 30:35I just,
- 30:36I don't want to be just the five
- 30:38grand version, though,
- 30:40if you're qualifying for
- 30:41the CrossFit Games.
- 30:42If you're qualifying for the
- 30:43CrossFit Games,
- 30:45then we should go with a
- 30:46ten or fifteen grand
- 30:47version and have a handful
- 30:49of people doing it as opposed to one.
- 30:53Now, if it's just like, I don't know,
- 30:58met metcon rush right it's a
- 31:01a smaller comp we're not
- 31:02qualifying for the games if
- 31:05if brian did that
- 31:06production there then it
- 31:06would be super cool and I
- 31:08would be totally legit cory
- 31:26makes a great point
- 31:28kind of like legends trying
- 31:29to force us to wear their gear,
- 31:31even though there wasn't a live stream.
- 31:34That just seems ridiculous for me.
- 31:43So, exactly.
- 31:47And then,
- 31:49you probably don't get the
- 31:52partnership with the
- 31:55wear company the apparel
- 31:57company because you're not
- 31:58live streaming you could
- 32:02sell a you could sell them
- 32:03more on their sponsorship
- 32:06if you were streaming your
- 32:08competition with their and
- 32:11forcing the athletes to
- 32:12wear the gear then it makes
- 32:14sense and dan church says
- 32:18he is going to broadcast
- 32:19metconrush watch me on that
- 32:21one I definitely will dance
- 32:26Um,
- 32:28but that's what I'm trying to like for
- 32:30Metcon rush for these
- 32:33competitions that aren't, um,
- 32:35fittest to the coast.
- 32:37Like his, his footage for there was great.
- 32:40Um, but I use the example of like when he,
- 32:43when he went to Dubai,
- 32:45he actually had Lucy
- 32:46Campbell with him in Dubai
- 32:47and you got two voices.
- 32:49You got Lucy and him.
- 32:50It just changes things up.
- 32:52Dubai is a little bit bigger
- 32:54than Metcon rush.
- 32:55So it makes sense to bring
- 32:57in more people for that.
- 32:58Maybe charge a little bit
- 33:00more for that so that we
- 33:01can get a different coverage.
- 33:04That's all I was saying.
- 33:09Be nice if Monster Games had a stream.
- 33:13Again,
- 33:13Monster Games isn't qualifying
- 33:14anybody for the games.
- 33:16Like a five grand stream of
- 33:18Brian walking around with a
- 33:20gimbal is cool.
- 33:21At least we get to watch it.
- 33:27That is a viable option.
- 33:29But I've tried to do what Brian's done.
- 33:32We broadcast probably five
- 33:37to ten heats at the Green
- 33:39Beret Project event a few years ago,
- 33:42and I walked the floor with a gimbal.
- 33:44And Charlie and Amy were
- 33:46watching and trying to
- 33:48provide play by play and
- 33:50color while I was walking
- 33:51around on the floor.
- 33:53Cause I couldn't hear myself talk.
- 33:55It was so loud in there that
- 33:56I could not have provided
- 33:58any kind of commentary
- 33:59while I was walking.
- 34:00So the fact that he's able
- 34:01to do that with the
- 34:02equipment he has again,
- 34:05totally commend him for that.
- 34:10Cause I've tried, it is really,
- 34:11really hard.
- 34:15But I'll tell you,
- 34:16just with me walking around,
- 34:18a lot of families wrote
- 34:19into us and really
- 34:20appreciated that they got
- 34:21to see their kid or their
- 34:23sister or their wife or
- 34:24their husband compete when
- 34:27they weren't going to get
- 34:28that opportunity to make it
- 34:30to Delaware to watch them.
- 34:33So, yeah.
- 34:38Yeah.
- 34:40I just wanted to talk about
- 34:41that because I'm not digging on Brian,
- 34:44and I know that everybody's
- 34:45piling on Brian right now.
- 34:47I was trying not to on Sunday night.
- 34:50I didn't want to be part of the herd.
- 34:54I wanted to commend him for the job he did,
- 34:56but also say, hey, dude,
- 34:58ask for some more money and
- 34:59bring in somebody to help
- 35:00you on these bigger events.
- 35:05That's all.
- 35:12I think that's really all I
- 35:15had on my rundown.
- 35:18Um,
- 35:21I still want to look into all the
- 35:23things that met fix are offering.
- 35:25Um, so later this week,
- 35:27cause we talked about that Sunday night.
- 35:29Um, um,
- 35:36And because I did have like
- 35:37a mini rant on Sunday night
- 35:39about that we're ripping on
- 35:42WFP for competing against
- 35:43CrossFit when saying they weren't.
- 35:45When Metfix,
- 35:46when Greg was on Savan's show
- 35:48and said they weren't
- 35:49competing with CrossFit,
- 35:50they wanted to work in tandem with it.
- 35:52And now they're doing their
- 35:53own affiliates and doing a
- 35:55workout of the day and such.
- 35:57So I want to dig into that
- 35:58more now that I'm home and
- 36:01talk about that more this week.
- 36:02So maybe we'll get to that
- 36:03Thursday or Friday.
- 36:08again I am all for
- 36:09competition competition
- 36:11makes the world a better
- 36:12place because it forces
- 36:14everybody to do better when
- 36:17you have competition you
- 36:18have to be better so um so
- 36:24there uh jonathan ortega
- 36:27but if brian does a live
- 36:28stream everybody talks crap crazy sauce
- 36:33I really enjoyed his coverage.
- 36:35I was able to watch the
- 36:37event when in otherwise I
- 36:39would not be able to.
- 36:41So I was glad he had done it.
- 36:45All I'm saying is now we've
- 36:48learned how to do it in a
- 36:49really good way.
- 36:51Let's step it up to like a
- 36:52little bit more for the big events.
- 36:58the bigger events if you're
- 36:59qualifying people for the
- 37:00games people are going to
- 37:02tune in maybe have two
- 37:04voices and a couple extra
- 37:05cameras that's it but ask
- 37:07for more money um these if
- 37:10you're partnering with
- 37:11crossfit you should have to
- 37:13do a live stream and there
- 37:15needs to be a requirement
- 37:16that you do it and at least
- 37:18at this level and I think
- 37:24that crossfit should mandate that
- 37:33With that, that's really all I have today.
- 37:37Again,
- 37:38huge thank you to Kat for running
- 37:39the show yesterday.
- 37:41Actually, taking over the show yesterday.
- 37:43She did an awesome job.
- 37:46So glad she's having success
- 37:48with her show.
- 37:49And we'll keep having her come in,
- 37:53do some takeovers every now
- 37:55and then to talk to you guys about
- 38:04So Jenny jumps in Ortega.
- 38:08That's not true.
- 38:09We were very objective about
- 38:10Brian stream and said he did well.
- 38:12I think everybody said he did well.
- 38:17I think what all I was
- 38:19asking for is if you're again,
- 38:22I know I'm repeating myself
- 38:23over and over again.
- 38:24If you are qualifying people
- 38:26to the CrossFit games,
- 38:27let's take it one step up.
- 38:30That's all.
- 38:36yeah and jody clarifies the
- 38:39most upper in the chat
- 38:40sunday night was whether
- 38:41brian got paid or not that
- 38:42is correct nobody said
- 38:44anything about the actual
- 38:45production of his live
- 38:46stream there was just some
- 38:49comments in the chat about
- 38:51um about whether he got
- 38:55paid or not and I don't really care um
- 39:00Again,
- 39:01I've tried to do it at smaller
- 39:02competitions, what he does,
- 39:04and he should get paid
- 39:06something for doing that.
- 39:07It is very, very hard.
- 39:09And Jenny says, I agree.
- 39:10CrossFit should want to
- 39:11contribute to the stream success.
- 39:13They should.
- 39:14And I don't think they need
- 39:15to get intimately involved,
- 39:16but just require that you
- 39:17have to have this minimal
- 39:19level of stream if we're
- 39:20going to give you tickets
- 39:23to hand to people to the CrossFit Games.
- 39:28You need to meet this
- 39:29minimum level of streaming of your event.
- 39:39And we're going to see a
- 39:39couple options of that in
- 39:40the upcoming weeks.
- 39:41You know,
- 39:42we saw what Brian did as a solo person.
- 39:44We're going to see what the
- 39:45Savon group does with Syndicate Crown.
- 39:48And I think they're doing NorCal too.
- 39:51So we're going to get a
- 39:51couple different options of
- 39:53different streaming types and flavors.
- 39:58And I'm excited for it all.
- 40:00And I just want us to come
- 40:01up with the best options
- 40:02possible moving forward
- 40:05that are affordable because
- 40:06it is ridiculous that may
- 40:07have had to pay two hundred
- 40:08grand for their for their stream.
- 40:15That just was insane.
- 40:25So Vaughn is going to crush syndicate.
- 40:27He mentioned this morning, though,
- 40:28he may charge for the live stream.
- 40:32I don't have a problem with that,
- 40:33but I know a lot of people will.
- 40:37I look at it this way.
- 40:39If I go see a movie at the
- 40:41movie theater and I take my wife with me,
- 40:44I'm paying twenty bucks
- 40:46just for the movie.
- 40:48And then I'm going to if I
- 40:49get popcorn and a drink,
- 40:51I'm paying thirty five
- 40:52bucks for two hours of entertainment.
- 40:57if I joined Savant's channel
- 40:59to watch a behind the
- 41:00scenes or to watch a stream,
- 41:03I'm paying twenty bucks a
- 41:04month and I'm getting way
- 41:05more than the two hours of
- 41:07entertainment for a movie.
- 41:11And.
- 41:12You know,
- 41:13being a content creator in this
- 41:14space for the last five years,
- 41:16this doesn't come without
- 41:18work and hard work and.
- 41:23And so what
- 41:26I try to support channels
- 41:29financially that I can, that I watch,
- 41:32and that I use for content myself.
- 41:38So...
- 41:42And this is a good topic for
- 41:43later in the week.
- 41:44We'll probably talk about
- 41:45this later this week
- 41:47because I really believe
- 41:49that what Rogue did to have,
- 41:51they had a basic live
- 41:53stream for free and they
- 41:54had an enhanced live stream
- 41:56for twenty five bucks for the weekend.
- 41:58And I pay that twenty five
- 41:59dollars every year and I
- 42:01would do it every year
- 42:02because it is so good.
- 42:05What they put out is so good
- 42:06and so worth that twenty
- 42:07five bucks that and it's so
- 42:10innovative and they keep
- 42:11trying new things.
- 42:13I would pay that twenty five
- 42:14dollars every single time.
- 42:24Meredith says, just joining the convo,
- 42:26if they want this sport to
- 42:27become professional,
- 42:28it's in HQ's best interest
- 42:30to provide a stipend to
- 42:31each semi to at least have
- 42:33a baseline stream.
- 42:37Or if you want to play,
- 42:39you have to do this minimum level.
- 42:42Nobody's forcing these
- 42:43events to be the partner
- 42:45with the CrossFit Games.
- 42:50And
- 42:53And if it's just a base
- 42:55level stream and you can
- 42:57get Brian or Siobhan to
- 42:59come out and do it for X
- 43:00number of dollars, that's fine.
- 43:02If you're rich and you want
- 43:03to pay for the full
- 43:05production truck version,
- 43:07that's fine too.
- 43:08But there needs to be a
- 43:09minimum level of what it is.
- 43:16Aaron says he also said
- 43:17voluntary and Ken says it's
- 43:19only at one ninety nine.
- 43:26Jonathan says,
- 43:27do you think CrossFit
- 43:28doesn't provide that
- 43:28stipend because they would
- 43:29rather you show up in
- 43:31person and not be at home on your couch?
- 43:39I don't know.
- 43:41I don't know if that's the
- 43:42way to even think about it.
- 43:47The experience of watching a
- 43:48CrossFit event in person
- 43:50and the experience of
- 43:50watching on a couch are two
- 43:52different things.
- 43:54And there are going to be
- 43:54people that want to do one
- 43:56and maybe not the other and vice versa.
- 43:59So I don't think that just because, I mean,
- 44:02the NFL for years blacked
- 44:03out games because they
- 44:05wanted people to come to
- 44:06them as opposed to watch them.
- 44:08But where's all the money in the NFL now?
- 44:11The money in the NFL is not
- 44:12on ticket sales.
- 44:14The money in the NFL is in TV rights.
- 44:23That's how they make their money.
- 44:25Billions and billions and
- 44:26billions of dollars in TV rights,
- 44:29not in ticket sales to the games.
- 44:32That's just an added bonus at this point.
- 44:38So I think that if you're
- 44:40looking at it that way,
- 44:41it's short-sighted because
- 44:43if you look at the history
- 44:44of sports and blacking out games on TV,
- 44:48it has never really worked
- 44:50the way they wanted it to.
- 44:53I think you give people both
- 44:55options and you make both
- 44:57options attractive enough
- 44:59that the people that want
- 45:00to do one can do that and
- 45:02the people that want to do
- 45:03the other can do that.
- 45:06So.
- 45:11And tape delay.
- 45:13Those other sports have tried tape delay.
- 45:15It does not work.
- 45:16Live sports have to be
- 45:17watched live or it's not as entertaining.
- 45:25And Aaron, I don't think they care.
- 45:28I think Wilson Pack cares.
- 45:30I think Rich Froning cared.
- 45:32I think that the people at
- 45:33Wadland Fest cared.
- 45:36But I don't think CrossFit
- 45:37cares if people show up or not.
- 45:46And Meredith says, if that's the case,
- 45:47then HQ needs to be
- 45:48realistic about who can show up versus...
- 45:51Versus rather than watching on the couch.
- 45:53I live in California and
- 45:54going to Knoxville is not an option.
- 45:57Right.
- 45:59Again, I have,
- 46:04I've screamed from the
- 46:05mountaintop that CrossFit
- 46:07has never learned from other sports.
- 46:10And I know that they keep
- 46:11saying we're a niche sport
- 46:12and we're smaller and we're blah, blah,
- 46:14blah.
- 46:15But all these streams go out and there's,
- 46:18there's no advertising on it at all.
- 46:21That is a revenue stream
- 46:22that has never been tapped
- 46:23in the CrossFit space.
- 46:26I think Mayhem did it a
- 46:27little where they would do
- 46:30live shots from a booth in
- 46:31Vendor Village.
- 46:33And I thought that that was
- 46:34like a step forward in
- 46:36trying to get some revenue
- 46:38on a live stream.
- 46:39But again,
- 46:40I think you have to do both live
- 46:42and stream live.
- 46:45Because there are people
- 46:47that want both types.
- 46:49And Meredith is correct.
- 46:51There are people in Europe
- 46:52who want to watch Syndicate Crown.
- 46:55That's not realistic for
- 46:56them to fly into the United
- 46:58States to watch Syndicate Crown.
- 47:00It's not realistic for her
- 47:01to fly from California to watch it.
- 47:04Heck, with my budget this year,
- 47:06I have to be very limited
- 47:07in what I can get to.
- 47:10I can't fly to california I
- 47:12can't fly to tfx and do all
- 47:15this stuff at this back to
- 47:17back to back so ken walters
- 47:25major sports leagues tv
- 47:26rights and licensing is the
- 47:28money greg was for saving
- 47:30lives and turned down
- 47:31millions in both tv and
- 47:33merch license yeah they had
- 47:36their shot at major tv money in
- 47:41And that is when Greg
- 47:42stripped it down to what he
- 47:44wanted it to be.
- 47:46And that is the methodology
- 47:48and the videos on the couch
- 47:49with the blue jugs of water.
- 47:52And that's what we got.
- 47:58So.
- 48:04Aaron Frazier says,
- 48:05grow the affiliates and
- 48:07members to grow the sport.
- 48:10I think there's so many
- 48:10different ways to grow the sport.
- 48:12So many different ways.
- 48:14There's no one answer.
- 48:16There's no one answer,
- 48:18but these are topics for
- 48:20another day because I've
- 48:22got to get back to work guys.
- 48:24And so do you.
- 48:25So you knuckleheads get back to work.
- 48:28Lunchtime is over.
- 48:30I'll see everybody next time
- 48:32on Lunch with the Clydesdale.
- 48:34Bye, guys.
