Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Wealth and Territory Government have announced that the magpie goose
- 0:03Speaker 1: bag limits are going to be increased. So essentially they've
- 0:06Speaker 1: said that in recognition of a larger magpie goose population
- 0:09Speaker 1: being identified during their survey, the daily bag limit has
- 0:13Speaker 1: been increased to seven. Now joining us on the line
- 0:16Speaker 1: to tell us what this means is is Bart Irwin,
- 0:19Speaker 1: who is indeed from Anty Field and Game Association. Good
- 0:23Speaker 1: morning to you.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Bart, Good morning Katie, Bart.
- 0:26Speaker 1: What do you reckon about this bag limit increase?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Anti Fielding Game, along with all waterfoil handers, are thrilled
- 0:34Speaker 2: with the increase in the bag limit to what we
- 0:36Speaker 2: should be believe should be the standard each year. ANTI
- 0:40Speaker 2: where Yeah, we're also pleased to answer your dialogue has
- 0:42Speaker 2: opened up with government since Minister Nicole Manison has taken
- 0:46Speaker 2: over Pairanger's portfolio, and we hope to be speaking with
- 0:50Speaker 2: Minister must in the very near future.
- 0:53Speaker 1: There you go. So it sounds sounds like there's been
- 0:56Speaker 1: a bit of a positive change, has there, Bart.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yes, the changes in the ministry were well received by
- 1:05Speaker 2: us at Anti Field and Game. I can tell you.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Yeah, right, And so you and I spoke a couple
- 1:10Speaker 1: of years back, you know, when they had actually announced
- 1:12Speaker 1: that these bag limits were going to be reduced, and
- 1:15Speaker 1: you'd spoken about the impact that that was going to
- 1:17Speaker 1: have when it came to hunters, particularly those that travel
- 1:21Speaker 1: from interstate, you know, to get out there and hunt
- 1:24Speaker 1: magpie geese. But with this increase to seven do you
- 1:28Speaker 1: think it's going to mean that, you know, we see
- 1:30Speaker 1: some of those visitors come back to hunt again.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Well yeah, after the estimates sessions put the population at
- 1:39Speaker 2: one point at six million. When I put that in
- 1:41Speaker 2: the column, knew it must have all been read down south,
- 1:46Speaker 2: because I started getting phone calls immediately from people saying
- 1:51Speaker 2: they were coming. When did I think the birds would
- 1:54Speaker 2: be in the reserves and where it would be the
- 1:56Speaker 2: best place to stay? They lot the stay and caravan
- 2:00Speaker 2: and parks at coolinga, Award Springs and Virginia there that
- 2:04Speaker 2: some of the favorites, as well as booking and the
- 2:09Speaker 2: homes for entire weeks. So yeah, I'm expecting a lot
- 2:14Speaker 2: of a lot of people to come. You know. Waterfowl
- 2:17Speaker 2: hunting provides twenty between twelve and twenty five million dollars
- 2:21Speaker 2: worth of economic benefit to the territory of the one
- 2:25Speaker 2: hundred million that hunting generates in the Northern Territory. So
- 2:30Speaker 2: it's big, it's big bucks. And these are all local,
- 2:36Speaker 2: well Australian visitors. You know, you don't have to talk
- 2:38Speaker 2: them into coming. They don't need big issues to get here.
- 2:44Speaker 2: They just jump in the car or jump on a
- 2:46Speaker 2: plane and hire a car. When they get here and start,
- 2:50Speaker 2: they has fun and take them take some beautiful mate
- 2:53Speaker 2: home to their families in Victoria.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Now, but I know as well that they said that. Obviously,
- 2:59Speaker 1: the the waterfowl hunting season is going to commence on
- 3:02Speaker 1: the twenty first of September, and it is indeed on
- 3:05Speaker 1: those designated hunting reserves, with hunters also entitled to a
- 3:09Speaker 1: daily bag limit of ten ducks. Is that a good
- 3:13Speaker 1: move as well?
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yes? Well, the the new Makepoint gooosee management program has
- 3:22Speaker 2: trigger points. We don't entirely agree with them at all.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Saying that seven birds seven geese per anum is our
- 3:29Speaker 2: seven geese each year would still be sustainable. And we
- 3:35Speaker 2: know that last year there must have been a mistake
- 3:37Speaker 2: because this year the count is one point eighty six
- 3:40Speaker 2: million with sixty four thousand nests. Those nests were still
- 3:44Speaker 2: in production during the aerial survey and lay at another
- 3:46Speaker 2: two one hundred and fifty thousand adult ease to the
- 3:50Speaker 2: population by the time the hunting season commences, because each
- 3:53Speaker 2: each nest produces four and a half additional make point
- 3:57Speaker 2: geese on average, so the population will be well over
- 4:00Speaker 2: two point one million when the season starts. But the
- 4:05Speaker 2: count had to be a mistake. They lost five hundred
- 4:07Speaker 2: thousand geese last year and the Aleric fisher said the
- 4:13Speaker 2: ness count last year was significantly down or this was
- 4:17Speaker 2: a significant increase this year up to sixty four thousand.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Had we end up with eight hundred and eighty thousand
- 4:25Speaker 2: more geese at the start of this year's season when
- 4:28Speaker 2: it consider only four and a half geese could have
- 4:31Speaker 2: been grown, So you know, they would have need to
- 4:35Speaker 2: produce fourteen geese from each and s last year to
- 4:38Speaker 2: get to this figure. So that's why we know we
- 4:43Speaker 2: are dubious about the aerial survey. I've been on them
- 4:46Speaker 2: a few times, feeling and been on them numerous times,
- 4:49Speaker 2: and yeah, what I see and what I read don't
- 4:55Speaker 2: often add up.
- 4:56Speaker 1: So interesting, very interesting. One last question, how do you
- 5:01Speaker 1: like to eat your magpie geese? Crystal, my new producer
- 5:05Speaker 1: was wondering what does it taste like, and she wants
- 5:08Speaker 1: to know the best recipe.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Well, like the breasts, I like grill, Yeah, the legs
- 5:17Speaker 2: I like the cast role and then and curry and
- 5:21Speaker 2: often I end up making pies with the leftovers from that.
- 5:26Speaker 2: It goes beautiful with a little gravy in a pie.
- 5:30Speaker 2: And lately friends of mine have been smoking and smoking
- 5:35Speaker 2: the meat and also making clami and things like that.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Say it so versatile. And with that, I also use
- 5:47Speaker 2: the giblets, the heart and liver and the main giblet
- 5:53Speaker 2: there that grinds their all their food, so all in
- 5:58Speaker 2: all fabulous culinary package that while I was overhead and
- 6:03Speaker 2: my dog enjoys picking up and bring them back to me.
- 6:06Speaker 1: There you go, But unlucky or apologies to any vegetarians
- 6:10Speaker 1: out there listening this morning. But Bart sounds like you
- 6:13Speaker 1: thoroughly enjoy your magpie geese, mate, and a good day
- 6:17Speaker 1: for you guys and for all the hunters of the
- 6:19Speaker 1: territory this morning.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Why it's why we live here, Katie, It's why we
- 6:25Speaker 2: live here.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Good on you, Bart, always enjoy a chat with you, mate,
- 6:28Speaker 1: Thanks so much for your time this morning.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Thanks Katie, Thank you
