- 1:09Speaker 1: how Stuff Works dot com. Hey, welcome to the podcast.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I'm Josh Clark. There's Charles W. Chuck Pryett, there's Jerry.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Guess what Jerry's doing. She's eating your lunch, which is
- 1:25Speaker 1: what she always does. So that makes this Stuff you
- 1:28Speaker 1: Should Know. Uh, just back from the road. Big grueling
- 1:32Speaker 1: to to city tour. It was kind of grueling because
- 1:36Speaker 1: I get really really nervous before d C shows in particular. Yeah,
- 1:40Speaker 1: so thank you to Boston, Massachusetts, the Commonwealth making it
- 1:44Speaker 1: nice and easy and relaxing the Commonwealth in the district
- 1:47Speaker 1: we didn't go to We didn't go to a state. No,
- 1:50Speaker 1: we didn't, did we. Yeah, you know those porschemos in
- 1:53Speaker 1: um in DC can't even they don't even have representation. Yeah,
- 1:57Speaker 1: but they can buy weed. Really, I didn't know that.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I don't know if it's I don't know if they
- 2:02Speaker 1: have shops, but I know that DC is one of
- 2:04Speaker 1: the places that supposedly voted it in, but he usually
- 2:07Speaker 1: takes years after to roll that out. It's a big thing.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I read a really really interesting article. I think I
- 2:13Speaker 1: was in The New Yorker years back when, right after
- 2:17Speaker 1: Washington and Oregon passed and they were the first pass
- 2:20Speaker 1: recreational right. And I can't remember who it profiled or
- 2:24Speaker 1: what state the guy was working for, but it was
- 2:26Speaker 1: this guy who basically was like, Okay, the voters voted
- 2:29Speaker 1: this in, go figure out how to do this, and like,
- 2:33Speaker 1: do it right so that we actually get rid of
- 2:35Speaker 1: illegal weed and organized crime and all that stuff. But also, um,
- 2:39Speaker 1: don't hurt the alcohol lobby. Like this guy had so
- 2:42Speaker 1: many interesting air or balls juggling in the air that
- 2:46Speaker 1: it was a really great article. Check it out. I
- 2:49Speaker 1: don't remember what it was called. I'm pretty sure it
- 2:51Speaker 1: was The New Yorker, No recollection of the year. Go wait,
- 2:57Speaker 1: I just left. So we're talking today, not about weed
- 3:01Speaker 1: or the New Yorker or anything like that, even Jerry's lunch, Chuck.
- 3:05Speaker 1: We're talking about Ferrari's one of the most beautiful cars,
- 3:11Speaker 1: car lines, one of the greatest automotive manufacturers of all time. Yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 1: it's funny dudes like you and I. Obviously there's one
- 3:21Speaker 1: Ferrari to us, although I have grown to appreciate other
- 3:24Speaker 1: Ferraris over the years, like the Ferres Bueller Ferrari and
- 3:28Speaker 1: some of those older cool ones. But for guys like us,
- 3:30Speaker 1: the Magnum p I Ferrari is the Ferrari to indel Ferraris.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Is that like the Yes, I think I don't even remember.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I just call it the Magnum. That's all you need
- 3:39Speaker 1: to call it. One of the greatest looking cars in
- 3:42Speaker 1: the history of cars. And I'm not even a sports
- 3:43Speaker 1: car guy, right, No, I'm not either, but that is
- 3:47Speaker 1: probably the greatest car ever made. It's dope, yea. So
- 3:50Speaker 1: Magnum could rock that thing, and if you watch him
- 3:53Speaker 1: get in and out of it, it's pretty funny. Just
- 3:55Speaker 1: that alone is like, Wow, it's a really well made car.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Well yeah, and you also like it's Tom Sell like
- 3:59Speaker 1: nine tall, Yeah, he kind of is. And are his
- 4:02Speaker 1: shorts that small? But that that Ferrari that I think
- 4:05Speaker 1: it's a Yes, it was, um, Yes, his shorts were
- 4:08Speaker 1: very small. Um a lot of thigh On that show,
- 4:11Speaker 1: it was like a clown car basically when he'd get
- 4:14Speaker 1: out of it. Yeah, you know, Higgins would come after
- 4:16Speaker 1: and wreck. Man, what a show. But that's not the
- 4:18Speaker 1: Ferrari that we're talking about today, and I want to say, so,
- 4:22Speaker 1: there's some numbers that are in here. I went and
- 4:24Speaker 1: looked up the real numbers. These are way way, way low.
- 4:30Speaker 1: But as far as value of the car, yeah, if
- 4:33Speaker 1: you want to get fascinated, everybody, even if you're not
- 4:35Speaker 1: into Ferraris, just type in some of the names of
- 4:39Speaker 1: the Ferraris that we're going to throw out there today
- 4:41Speaker 1: in the years and you will find an entire world
- 4:44Speaker 1: out there of breathtaking lee rich people who buy Greek
- 4:49Speaker 1: tycoons half a million dollar cars, you know, Yeah, I
- 4:54Speaker 1: mean people value different things. Obviously. I've never been a
- 4:59Speaker 1: guy that that thought, like a seventy five thousand dollar car.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I've probably just thought why would somebody spend that kind
- 5:06Speaker 1: of money. But some people, you know, they love their car,
- 5:09Speaker 1: so that's their jam. You know. That's kind of what
- 5:11Speaker 1: this episode is for. It's a car episode from two
- 5:14Speaker 1: guys who are not car guys, So dig in and
- 5:17Speaker 1: prepared to be outraged a moment after a moment. I've
- 5:20Speaker 1: got my kind of SUV that my brother thinks is
- 5:23Speaker 1: a minivan. It's a crossover. Is that what they're called now?
- 5:28Speaker 1: A crossover is like a car and suv. Yours is
- 5:32Speaker 1: a minivan in an suv crossover. Yeah, I drive a
- 5:35Speaker 1: Honda Pilot now, everybody, and the Pilot underwent a change
- 5:40Speaker 1: from looking like a four runner type of suv a
- 5:44Speaker 1: couple of years ago. I think then they kind of
- 5:46Speaker 1: shrunk it and squatted it to where it sort of
- 5:49Speaker 1: looks like their minivan, put a clown nose on the front.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I try to get a minivan and try to get
- 5:54Speaker 1: the Honda Odyssey and him, and it was like, no,
- 5:55Speaker 1: we're not getting a minivan. Well I saw it just
- 5:57Speaker 1: yesterday and I can tell you it's a fine looking
- 5:59Speaker 1: car ship and you're like, totally normal. Drive again. First
- 6:03Speaker 1: time I've ever had leather seats under my butt? That
- 6:05Speaker 1: is so nice. Here at forty seven years old, and
- 6:08Speaker 1: you're just like, fart, that's how you fired in a
- 6:13Speaker 1: leather seat classy like well, Plus, it doesn't absorb like
- 6:18Speaker 1: those class seats a little stinky. Oh they do, they do,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and like it accumulates over time, you know what I mean.
- 6:24Speaker 1: That's why if you're ever gonna buy a a used car, everybody,
- 6:27Speaker 1: which frankly, I think you always should smell the seat. No,
- 6:31Speaker 1: just do yourself a solid and splurge on the leather
- 6:34Speaker 1: because you can wipe those off, right, But I do.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Everyone take hard. It's still I'm true to my roots.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I have my pickup truck because it's paid for and
- 6:43Speaker 1: I still use it for hauling nice garbage. That's that's
- 6:46Speaker 1: my side job, is it. I didn't know that. Yeah,
- 6:50Speaker 1: that's cool. Good trash. Good to know. Do you have
- 6:52Speaker 1: a card? I know, you just flag me down. I'll
- 6:54Speaker 1: just drive around yelling out the window. It's a good idea.
- 6:58Speaker 1: You don't need a card. Why waste money on this? Exactly?
- 7:01Speaker 1: So we're talking Ferraris today, and we're talking specifically a
- 7:05Speaker 1: two year period in the nineteen seventies when not one,
- 7:09Speaker 1: but two Ferraris made the news for being buried kind
- 7:15Speaker 1: of not Yeah, if you if you want to um terrify,
- 7:19Speaker 1: horrify a Ferrari enthusiast talk about burying their their favorite car. Yeah,
- 7:26Speaker 1: especially how they did it the second way. All right,
- 7:30Speaker 1: should we start out with the first one? Yes? Alright,
- 7:35Speaker 1: Spring and Beverly Hills very lovely, I imagine, yeah, you know,
- 7:41Speaker 1: I mean it's always lovely out there in Beverly Hills. Yeah,
- 7:45Speaker 1: that's the slogan they put on the T shirts. That's right.
- 7:47Speaker 1: There was a socialite named and she was married to well,
- 7:51Speaker 1: the story is a little convoluted, but she was the
- 7:53Speaker 1: widow of a Texas oil tycoon named Mike West. And
- 7:57Speaker 1: these are this is the bare bones beginning. She was
- 7:59Speaker 1: married to this guy. He died and she had a
- 8:03Speaker 1: car that she loved, a Ferrari America American nineteen. And
- 8:11Speaker 1: her wish was to be buried in this thing. And
- 8:15Speaker 1: we'll go ahead and leap to the end and say
- 8:16Speaker 1: that did happen, And now we'll fill it in with
- 8:19Speaker 1: all the exciting details. Yeah, so this this lady, Sandra West,
- 8:23Speaker 1: She actually was born and raised in Beverly Hills. Her
- 8:27Speaker 1: parents owned a clothing store, and so she was like
- 8:30Speaker 1: middle class um, but she was a looker and she
- 8:33Speaker 1: started dating like hunky stars like Elvis. She was hot
- 8:37Speaker 1: to Trot and Sinatra. I think that's actually fair to say.
- 8:41Speaker 1: She was a fun loving person, but also a very
- 8:45Speaker 1: um lonely person, as we will see. So she she
- 8:50Speaker 1: um starts dating around and she ends up dating a
- 8:53Speaker 1: guy named Saul West. Yeah, a little weird how this
- 8:57Speaker 1: all happened. So Saul West was a tech this oil tycoon,
- 9:01Speaker 1: and um, he was actually he was actually well he
- 9:04Speaker 1: wasn't away, but he was actually a younger the younger
- 9:07Speaker 1: brother of I Quest. So Sandra West when she meets Saul,
- 9:11Speaker 1: she doesn't know that I Quests exist, and she's not
- 9:13Speaker 1: super happy with Saul. Apparently he ran around on her
- 9:16Speaker 1: and everything. Um, and she was like, wait a minute,
- 9:19Speaker 1: you haven't a brother, and he's an older brother and
- 9:22Speaker 1: we all know what that means. And he's the true
- 9:24Speaker 1: heir to the family fortune. Where is he do you say?
- 9:28Speaker 1: And Saul was like, oh, he's just a washed up loser.
- 9:31Speaker 1: He loves drugs and drinking. And the parents they they're
- 9:34Speaker 1: sick of them, so they sent him down to Mexico
- 9:36Speaker 1: to live with his bodyguard. Yeah, that's where you got
- 9:38Speaker 1: to clean up. That's another episode right there. We need
- 9:41Speaker 1: to go. I looked into Ike West. There's not a
- 9:43Speaker 1: lot about him online. Yeah, I wonder, I mean, we're
- 9:47Speaker 1: Is it disparaging to say that she was a gold digger. No,
- 9:51Speaker 1: yes it is. She undertook and carried out a project successfully,
- 9:58Speaker 1: which is very rich guy. Right, But here's the thing,
- 10:01Speaker 1: Like she could have married Saul West. He was rich.
- 10:03Speaker 1: It's not like he didn't have access to the family fortune.
- 10:05Speaker 1: He was the one of the I think two brothers
- 10:08Speaker 1: who was in the good graces of the family. Yeah,
- 10:10Speaker 1: so it's not like he didn't have an allowance, right.
- 10:13Speaker 1: She apparently wasn't really happy with Saul West, so she
- 10:15Speaker 1: went after I quest and it wasn't like just you know,
- 10:19Speaker 1: picking the lowest hanging fruit, like she had to work
- 10:21Speaker 1: for this, and she did. She like took this dude
- 10:23Speaker 1: who was down and out in Mexico, living with his
- 10:26Speaker 1: body gone down and out in Beverly Hills. No, that
- 10:28Speaker 1: was Nicknulty, Yes, because his family kicked him out of
- 10:32Speaker 1: the US to go live in Mexico and just basically
- 10:34Speaker 1: do whatever you're gonna do. God knows what this guy
- 10:37Speaker 1: did in Mexico. Yeah, but she went down there, like
- 10:39Speaker 1: you said, um, cleaned him up, I guess, got him
- 10:42Speaker 1: off drugs. And he must have thought, you know, this
- 10:45Speaker 1: is this is great. This lady came all the way
- 10:47Speaker 1: down here, My brother's girlfriend came all the way down
- 10:49Speaker 1: here right to take care of me. Well, she definitely did,
- 10:53Speaker 1: and he turned over a new leaf. He said, you
- 10:56Speaker 1: know what, I'm I'm gonna come back to the United States.
- 10:59Speaker 1: And I want to take the reins of this company
- 11:02Speaker 1: that is rightfully mine and this is my wife and
- 11:06Speaker 1: or my wife to be. I'm gonna ask her to
- 11:08Speaker 1: marry me. And they got married. Yeah, so she cleans
- 11:10Speaker 1: the dude up. They get married, and then first thing
- 11:13Speaker 1: is she's like, okay, now we're moving to Beverly Hills,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and I want a Ferrari And he bought her Ferrari,
- 11:17Speaker 1: bought her the nineteen sixty four Ferrari America three thirty
- 11:22Speaker 1: good car. And um, I looked and it's it was
- 11:25Speaker 1: the Ferrari three thirty S n what chuck five zero
- 11:30Speaker 1: five five? And I was like, what is S? And
- 11:33Speaker 1: I can't see it? Yes, so I looked. There are
- 11:37Speaker 1: so few of those made Ferraris, like these vintage Ferraris
- 11:41Speaker 1: that they'll actually put the serial number after it. And
- 11:43Speaker 1: the serial number is usually a very small number. It's
- 11:46Speaker 1: not like one of these ones that they ran out
- 11:48Speaker 1: of numbers, so they started using letters. It's like four
- 11:50Speaker 1: five numbers usually, right, like my Honda Pilot. When they
- 11:53Speaker 1: gave it to me, they were like, here's her Honda
- 11:54Speaker 1: pilot serial number right eight zero nine slash a J two. Right.
- 11:59Speaker 1: He just checked your wats in the middle of it. Yeah,
- 12:02Speaker 1: I was like, that's the one I want. So they
- 12:03Speaker 1: will actually like they they if you look, they'll look,
- 12:05Speaker 1: they'll add the serial number after the name of like
- 12:08Speaker 1: this specific car is what they're talking about. And they
- 12:10Speaker 1: can do that because this particular Ferrari America, the nineteen
- 12:13Speaker 1: sixty four that she had, was one of just fifty
- 12:16Speaker 1: ever made. So it was a hot car right out
- 12:19Speaker 1: of the gate. All right. So they're in Beverly Hills.
- 12:24Speaker 1: He has health problems because he had that history of
- 12:27Speaker 1: abusing his body. Um, he had some rapid weight fluctuations,
- 12:31Speaker 1: which is never great for your health, and he ended
- 12:34Speaker 1: up dying. Uh, in Las Vegas at the Flamingo Hotel.
- 12:37Speaker 1: What a way to go under what is labeled here
- 12:42Speaker 1: is mysterious circumstances. It's all it's labeled anywhere. I can't
- 12:45Speaker 1: find anything out about it. I wonder how many people
- 12:48Speaker 1: have died at the Flamingo Hotel under mysterious circumstances over
- 12:51Speaker 1: the years whose family successfully covered it up. So that's
- 12:54Speaker 1: a couple of shmows like us years and years later,
- 12:57Speaker 1: forty fifty years later, can't find out what happened. Right,
- 13:01Speaker 1: So how long were they married? Do you know when
- 13:03Speaker 1: what year they got married? So I believe in nineteen Okay,
- 13:08Speaker 1: so they were married a short four years. But nevertheless,
- 13:12Speaker 1: Sandrow West became heiress to that. Yeah, she got Ike's
- 13:19Speaker 1: claim to the to the company. His share went to
- 13:21Speaker 1: her after he died. Right, And that's the thing, like
- 13:24Speaker 1: you can you know, you can say what you will
- 13:25Speaker 1: about you know, her setting her sights on the true
- 13:28Speaker 1: heir him um living pretty fast, but they appeared to
- 13:34Speaker 1: very much love each other. He left her his share
- 13:36Speaker 1: of the family fortune. She took his last name. Um.
- 13:39Speaker 1: She said that she when she filled out a will,
- 13:42Speaker 1: she wanted to be buried in Texas next to her husband,
- 13:45Speaker 1: not in Beverly Hills, where she was born and raised
- 13:48Speaker 1: and spent most of her life. So they were like
- 13:50Speaker 1: an actual real couple. Um. So I have the impression
- 13:54Speaker 1: that when he died, like there was something missing for
- 13:56Speaker 1: sure in her life, especially considering that she is round
- 14:00Speaker 1: known as a fairly um, a lonely person. Yeah, it
- 14:03Speaker 1: was like me and Emily. I married her for her
- 14:05Speaker 1: dowry as the daughter of a Central Ohio um auto
- 14:11Speaker 1: glass magnate. Right, but it's real you know that's right,
- 14:16Speaker 1: So well maybe we should take what were you about
- 14:19Speaker 1: to say? He's laughing at Auto Glass Magnate. That's what
- 14:22Speaker 1: he does, Seneco glass. Everybody plug in father and lass company.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Nice job. You need someone to come out and you
- 14:29Speaker 1: had a tree fall on your window. Rick will take
- 14:31Speaker 1: care of you. That's nice. That is nice. Uh. Which
- 14:34Speaker 1: he's gonna be at our Cleveland show by the way,
- 14:36Speaker 1: which is great. He should be. It's like right there, yeah, um,
- 14:39Speaker 1: all right, maybe we should take a break because I
- 14:41Speaker 1: see the words Ingelbert humper Dink in front of me.
- 14:44Speaker 1: We'll come back and reveal the secret right after this?
- 15:09Speaker 1: What secret? Well, she dated Inclbert humperdnk Okay yeah, after
- 15:14Speaker 1: like West died, right, she basically made the scene. She
- 15:17Speaker 1: became a Hollywood socialite. Yes. And I went to see
- 15:20Speaker 1: him in concert when I was a little kid. Yeah.
- 15:23Speaker 1: It was one of those like I always say my
- 15:25Speaker 1: first concert was cheap trick because that was the first
- 15:28Speaker 1: one that I paid to go see. But my parents,
- 15:32Speaker 1: as much as they didn't like music, they weirdly took
- 15:34Speaker 1: me to see Kenney Rogers uh Inclbert Humper Dink and
- 15:40Speaker 1: I think Bobby Goldsboro. Those are the three shows that
- 15:45Speaker 1: I have some faint recollection of being in the b
- 15:49Speaker 1: Those are some good early shows. And my mom saw Elvis.
- 15:51Speaker 1: I didn't go, but yeah, I think you told me
- 15:53Speaker 1: that on that very last tour. I think that was
- 15:56Speaker 1: in the grace Land episode. Probably so so us Angelbert
- 16:00Speaker 1: Humperdink is one of the people she dated. She she
- 16:03Speaker 1: made a name for herself dressing up as the Texas
- 16:06Speaker 1: Rodeo Queen, wearing like fringe e stuff with Ryan stones
- 16:10Speaker 1: and a cowboy hat. She went out to Rodeo Drive
- 16:12Speaker 1: and we should we should say that she was like
- 16:14Speaker 1: a genuine, legitimate died in the wool car enthusiast. Not
- 16:18Speaker 1: only did she have that America three thirty, she also
- 16:21Speaker 1: had a GTS. Uh no, I'm sorry at three g
- 16:26Speaker 1: T and a Dino. Is it a Dino? Do you know?
- 16:29Speaker 1: I think it's probably Dino, Okay, and a Dino. She
- 16:32Speaker 1: had three Ferraris plus also a Stuts Blackhawk. If it
- 16:37Speaker 1: is so, Elvis like that car a lot. Actually it's
- 16:40Speaker 1: a It looks like a luxury land yacht married a
- 16:46Speaker 1: muscle car and that's what came out. You should look
- 16:49Speaker 1: at Elvis it's a neat, neat car, but apparently it
- 16:52Speaker 1: got like eight miles to the gallon. Well that's also
- 16:54Speaker 1: why I Alvis loved it, like two and a half tons.
- 16:58Speaker 1: I don't want an efficient car, and and that's pretty good.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Uh So, you know she would do crazy things like well,
- 17:05Speaker 1: I mean, this isn't super crazy, but she would bop
- 17:07Speaker 1: around town in that Ferrari and like go to the
- 17:10Speaker 1: uh Chasen's and Beverly Hills in order of Burger to
- 17:14Speaker 1: go and speed out of there in a Ferrari in
- 17:17Speaker 1: her rodeo outfit. So she was sort of well known
- 17:20Speaker 1: in town. Is a bit of an eccentric And by
- 17:23Speaker 1: that I think we mean she like pills a lot. Well, sure,
- 17:28Speaker 1: it's the seventies, so uh yeah, so she lived fast,
- 17:33Speaker 1: but she had fun. I guess it's the way to
- 17:35Speaker 1: put it right. The fast died young. She did die young.
- 17:38Speaker 1: So in her America, she got into a car wreck
- 17:41Speaker 1: and sustained some injuries and she seemed to be on
- 17:45Speaker 1: the men she was getting better, but she from what
- 17:48Speaker 1: I understand, she was given a nurse and a doctor
- 17:52Speaker 1: to oversee her the drugs that she was taking as
- 17:57Speaker 1: a result of the car wreck while she was mending um.
- 18:01Speaker 1: And then one night I guess she had taken too
- 18:03Speaker 1: much or else she got her hands on some mother
- 18:05Speaker 1: drugs and she overdosed, apparently on codeine and barbiturous from
- 18:09Speaker 1: what I saw, very sad. However, this is where the
- 18:13Speaker 1: story gets a little strange. That that was in seventy
- 18:16Speaker 1: seven when she passed, and in nineteen two, five years previous,
- 18:21Speaker 1: she actually thought ahead of time and said, I want
- 18:24Speaker 1: to be buried next to my husband. See in my
- 18:28Speaker 1: late night gown by Porter Loring. It was I guess,
- 18:33Speaker 1: just the the go to mortuary mortician, hot mortician in
- 18:38Speaker 1: San Antonio. Uh, and I want to be buried in
- 18:42Speaker 1: my ferrari with and this is a quote with a
- 18:44Speaker 1: seat slanted comfortably. Yeah. She didn't want to be sitting
- 18:48Speaker 1: straight up right for eternity, of course not. So here's
- 18:51Speaker 1: the thing for her will to be carried out. It
- 18:55Speaker 1: fell to her brother in law slash ex boyfriend, Saul West.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Saul was not very amused by the prospect of having
- 19:03Speaker 1: to do this. I'm sure he was like, are you
- 19:04Speaker 1: kidding me? So? Um? After all this, Yeah, because not
- 19:08Speaker 1: only is it bearing a ferrari, the other ferrars got
- 19:11Speaker 1: auctioned off for ridiculous amounts of money. Some of her
- 19:14Speaker 1: jewelry after her death was auctioned off for things when
- 19:17Speaker 1: I think one of them is like three fifty grand
- 19:19Speaker 1: in nineteen seventy seven dollars for one of her rings.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Another one's like a hundred and fifty grand for another ring,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and her ferraris were auctioned off. So her state was
- 19:28Speaker 1: being liquidated. The idea of burying one of these cars
- 19:33Speaker 1: with her, who I would guess he probably didn't like
- 19:36Speaker 1: very much. Um, that was bad enough, but on top
- 19:41Speaker 1: of it, this funeral was going to cost about fifteen
- 19:44Speaker 1: thousand dollars in nineteen seventy seven dollars. So he went
- 19:48Speaker 1: to a judge and said, this lady was wacko. There's
- 19:52Speaker 1: no way I should have to do this, judge now.
- 19:55Speaker 1: And the judge is like, all right, wait, we're gonna
- 19:57Speaker 1: put a hold on all this. Let's put Ms His
- 20:00Speaker 1: west on Ice in a mausoleum literally, and uh, we're
- 20:04Speaker 1: going to start all this out. So they did. Yeah,
- 20:07Speaker 1: So her position, Dr Raymond Weston Um had to testify
- 20:11Speaker 1: and says, well, she was a bizarre woman for sure.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Um and he described her as a psychotic with a
- 20:16Speaker 1: tendency towards paranoia and hallucination. But the judge was like,
- 20:20Speaker 1: you know, it really doesn't matter. If these were her wishes,
- 20:23Speaker 1: then it's legally we have to carry them out. So
- 20:27Speaker 1: the final ruling came down that yes, we are going
- 20:31Speaker 1: to bury this woman in her ferrari, right, and by we,
- 20:34Speaker 1: I mean you saw the judge was not so sol
- 20:38Speaker 1: did it. He hired Porter loring as um as Sandra
- 20:42Speaker 1: had had stipulated, and um they shipped the Ferrari out
- 20:47Speaker 1: from Beverly Hills, UH to be outfitted with Sandra, who
- 20:54Speaker 1: was wearing her lace nighty, put into the car and
- 20:59Speaker 1: then put into a casket, an enormous giant casket, and
- 21:04Speaker 1: then um taken by train out to the graveyard where
- 21:07Speaker 1: a crane was waiting to the ferrari was in a casket. Yeah,
- 21:10Speaker 1: they put the whole thing in a casket. Well I
- 21:13Speaker 1: guess that makes sense, Sure it does. It's a big
- 21:15Speaker 1: old casket, was it? The didn't Elon must send up?
- 21:19Speaker 1: Oh no, of course that was a tesla right. It
- 21:21Speaker 1: was like, wait a minute, wasn't there a ferrari in space? No,
- 21:23Speaker 1: it's a test Yeah, that would have not make it
- 21:25Speaker 1: any sense whatsoever. And it makes you wonder, like, who
- 21:28Speaker 1: really is Starman? Which of his enemies was unlucky enough
- 21:31Speaker 1: to be shot alive into space to die out there
- 21:33Speaker 1: while the whole world was watching, you know? And that's
- 21:36Speaker 1: because he's got a touch of super villain to him,
- 21:39Speaker 1: you think, Yeah, we're just all very fortunate that he's
- 21:42Speaker 1: not super villain because would be in big trouble if
- 21:44Speaker 1: he want keeps it all in check. Sure, so the
- 21:47Speaker 1: story very sadly sort of ended, although she got her wish,
- 21:51Speaker 1: she didn't she didn't have like a lot of friends,
- 21:53Speaker 1: like apparently the people that attended her funeral were her
- 21:56Speaker 1: attorneys and nurses and doctors and stuff like that. Uh.
- 22:00Speaker 1: So it was sort of a sad ending to this
- 22:04Speaker 1: lady's wacky life to be buried in a nineteen ft long,
- 22:08Speaker 1: ten ft wide, nine ft deep grave in her Ferrari right,
- 22:13Speaker 1: which they filled with cement around so nobody could try
- 22:16Speaker 1: to get or that nightgown. But she got her wish,
- 22:19Speaker 1: her wish came true. Yeah, so happy ending, Sure, sad
- 22:24Speaker 1: ending happy uh And apparently now there it is still
- 22:29Speaker 1: visited by people. Where is it san Antonio. People will
- 22:34Speaker 1: go by and see where this Ferrari is buried. Yes,
- 22:37Speaker 1: you to San Antonio? Did you go by there? I didn't,
- 22:39Speaker 1: And I knew about this, but I didn't realize she
- 22:41Speaker 1: was in San Antonio. We would have totally gone. It
- 22:44Speaker 1: sounds like something that you guys will put on your list. Well,
- 22:47Speaker 1: it's on the list now. I'll tell you that. Should
- 22:50Speaker 1: we take a break? No, should we barrel into the
- 22:53Speaker 1: second one? Then take a break? Yeah? All right, we
- 22:55Speaker 1: stay in California because that's where this kind of crazy
- 22:57Speaker 1: stuff happens. Well, we have to go back to California
- 23:00Speaker 1: because we were just in San Antonio. Good point. Watching
- 23:02Speaker 1: the three hundred spectators watched Sandra West get buried. It
- 23:06Speaker 1: was really weird, that's right. So we go to south
- 23:09Speaker 1: central Los Angeles, the West Athens part, and I didn't
- 23:12Speaker 1: know where West Athens was until I looked it up
- 23:16Speaker 1: nine Street roughly. Uh, it's sort of by the one
- 23:19Speaker 1: ten right, Yeah, it's kind of like east of Hawthorne. Um,
- 23:24Speaker 1: I have no idea what you're talking about. I just
- 23:26Speaker 1: made up that one tin thing. I looked it up
- 23:29Speaker 1: to though. I was like, because I had seen it
- 23:31Speaker 1: referred to the South Central, but then everything else said
- 23:33Speaker 1: west Athens and I'm like, what is that? So I
- 23:35Speaker 1: looked and then we're Beverly Hills in Hollywood are and
- 23:38Speaker 1: that's it, right, pretty pretty much in Venice the water,
- 23:42Speaker 1: but it is it's like in the south part of
- 23:45Speaker 1: South Central, the southwest part of South Central. I think
- 23:48Speaker 1: that seems about right near. Yes, okay, alright, so we're oriented,
- 23:54Speaker 1: and uh, there's a staff reporter from the l A
- 23:57Speaker 1: Times named Priscilla Paynton who's going to figure in because
- 24:01Speaker 1: she kind of covered the story and it is in depth,
- 24:04Speaker 1: and well, this story is a little weird. We're going
- 24:07Speaker 1: to tell you the story, but the story is not
- 24:09Speaker 1: quite accurate, but we're gonna We're gonna go and tell
- 24:12Speaker 1: it as it was originally written, which is what people
- 24:15Speaker 1: thought it was for decades and decades. That's right. So
- 24:18Speaker 1: there were some kids digging around in the dirt in
- 24:22Speaker 1: their neighborhood, which is what kids are or to do.
- 24:25Speaker 1: This probably a little horseplay. I'm sure one kid was
- 24:27Speaker 1: probably self conscious. There was a lot of kids stuff
- 24:31Speaker 1: going on, lots of kids stuff, and they were digging
- 24:34Speaker 1: around and they felt something not too deep that felt
- 24:37Speaker 1: hard and said this. You know, I guess they probably
- 24:40Speaker 1: brushed the dirt away and said, this looks like like
- 24:43Speaker 1: maybe the roof of a car. That's a weird thing
- 24:46Speaker 1: to find at nineteen Street, but it's kind of a
- 24:49Speaker 1: weird thing to find anywhere buried underground, you know. Yeah,
- 24:53Speaker 1: So they got a cop involved pretty quickly, which was,
- 24:56Speaker 1: you know, a great thing for these kids to do.
- 24:58Speaker 1: I wouldn't have done that. I would have gotten shovel
- 25:00Speaker 1: and seeing what was going on. Oh yeah, oh sure.
- 25:02Speaker 1: So okay, well these kids were a little a little
- 25:05Speaker 1: more do gooder than you, apparently, right, So they flagged
- 25:09Speaker 1: down a cop and then the next thing you know,
- 25:10Speaker 1: there's two detectives on the scene, Detective Joe Sabbaths and
- 25:14Speaker 1: Detective Dennis Carroll, who would become forever known around as
- 25:18Speaker 1: precinct as Lenny Carroll because Priscilla Painter Painting called him
- 25:23Speaker 1: that accidentally. She put down that was his name in
- 25:25Speaker 1: the story. Oh if only Joe had become Carl, yeah,
- 25:29Speaker 1: Carl and Lenney, that would have been so wonderful. So
- 25:32Speaker 1: Dennis Carroll and Joe Sabbath were working this thing when
- 25:35Speaker 1: Priscilla Painting comes out and she's watching this, this whole
- 25:39Speaker 1: thing goes going down and this is what she's seeing.
- 25:41Speaker 1: She sees all of a sudden, now there's a there's
- 25:43Speaker 1: an earth mover. There's a whole bunch of sheriff's deputies
- 25:47Speaker 1: with shovels, also earth movers, but different kinds, you know.
- 25:51Speaker 1: And they're digging around this car and they're they're getting
- 25:53Speaker 1: more and more dirt off of it. And um, Sabbath
- 25:56Speaker 1: and Carol see that there's a car under there, but
- 26:00Speaker 1: it's covered in like rugs and plastic. And somebody tried
- 26:03Speaker 1: to kind of intomb the car, mummify it, I guess,
- 26:07Speaker 1: is how one of the guys from gelop Nick put it.
- 26:10Speaker 1: And what it was was a Dino to six gts
- 26:15Speaker 1: and this also had a serial number, oh seven eight
- 26:18Speaker 1: six too, and uh, they kind of duck through the car.
- 26:23Speaker 1: They eventually got it out. They dug through the trunk.
- 26:26Speaker 1: There was no one buried in it. No, no drugs.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Are big suitcases of cash or something you might expect
- 26:32Speaker 1: to find in a buried ferrari. Yeah, you like, who
- 26:35Speaker 1: would just bury a ferrari? This became an actual, like
- 26:37Speaker 1: huge question. Well, they ran the plates and found pretty
- 26:41Speaker 1: quickly that it had been stolen, that it was listed
- 26:43Speaker 1: as stolen, and so they started digging into it, right
- 26:47Speaker 1: literally they did. That was that's a good catch. So
- 26:51Speaker 1: um they found that back in vour this eight in
- 26:58Speaker 1: four the car had been hearted stolen by the original owner,
- 27:03Speaker 1: a man named Rosando Cruise. And Rosando Cruise and his
- 27:09Speaker 1: wife had gone to dinner at the Brown Derby on Wilshire,
- 27:13Speaker 1: um for their anniversary. Yeah. Well we should point out though,
- 27:17Speaker 1: as originally reported, they said that it was in surprisingly
- 27:20Speaker 1: good condition. Okay, this is Priscilla Paynton saying that in
- 27:22Speaker 1: the Los Angeles time. Kind of an important uh key
- 27:26Speaker 1: little clue here, right Okay, So, um, at the brown
- 27:29Speaker 1: Derby Rosando Cruise and his wife for celebrating their um,
- 27:34Speaker 1: their anniversary. And he had just bought her recently a car,
- 27:38Speaker 1: I think for her birthday or something like that. Um,
- 27:41Speaker 1: and he was doing pretty well. Apparently he was a
- 27:43Speaker 1: plumber by trade. I would guess he owned his own company. Um.
- 27:46Speaker 1: But he had bought his wife a Ferrari that at
- 27:49Speaker 1: the time had cost about twenty two thousand dollars is
- 27:53Speaker 1: how much I had sent him back, which is well
- 27:57Speaker 1: over seventy thousand dollars in two thousand seventeen. Yeah, okay.
- 28:01Speaker 1: So he when they got there, he had noticed that
- 28:04Speaker 1: the valet was looking a little too anxious to get
- 28:07Speaker 1: the keys from him, and he's like, I'm not letting
- 28:09Speaker 1: these guys get Ferrest Bueller my car. His wife was like,
- 28:12Speaker 1: what does that mean. He's like, just give it a
- 28:15Speaker 1: decade or so and you'll see. So he decided to
- 28:19Speaker 1: just go parking himself on on Wilshire Boulevard much safer. Yeah,
- 28:22Speaker 1: good idea. And so when he came back, the car
- 28:26Speaker 1: was gone. That's right, the car was gone. Um. There
- 28:30Speaker 1: were no leads as to who took it. Uh, as
- 28:33Speaker 1: far as the detectives were concerned, and Farmer's Insurance group said,
- 28:37Speaker 1: you know what, we're gonna pay. We're gonna pay this
- 28:40Speaker 1: thing off at a loss of that uh dollar dollar
- 28:46Speaker 1: dollar dollars to the legal owner, um, which at this
- 28:51Speaker 1: point was the was the Bank of America, very very
- 28:55Speaker 1: big point as well. Okay, so so basically the what
- 28:59Speaker 1: you just said, the shot of it is they said, okay,
- 29:02Speaker 1: we looked into it. The car was stolen. It's gone. Uh,
- 29:05Speaker 1: Farmer's Insurance, you need to pay the owner of the car,
- 29:08Speaker 1: which is the bank, and it's all just done. This
- 29:10Speaker 1: is four years prior, right, So when the car turns up, um,
- 29:14Speaker 1: like you said Priscilla Paynton, Well you want to take
- 29:18Speaker 1: a break. Nice cliffhanger. Okay. I took nice cliffhanger as
- 29:43Speaker 1: a yes. You meant yes, right, yes, okay, good, Well
- 29:46Speaker 1: we're back so um like you said, Priscilla Payton had said,
- 29:51Speaker 1: the car seemed in surprisingly good condition. She patented a
- 29:55Speaker 1: good picture, she did, but un incorrect picture, that's right.
- 30:01Speaker 1: So basically she set off this huge frenzy among Ferrari enthusiasts.
- 30:05Speaker 1: A Dino Dino had been discovered underground, had been written
- 30:10Speaker 1: off by an insurance company, and it was in surprisingly
- 30:13Speaker 1: good condition. That meant that they could probably get a
- 30:17Speaker 1: pretty good deal on it. And everybody wanted it. And
- 30:19Speaker 1: everybody started lighting up the switchboard at Farmers Insurance. Yeah,
- 30:22Speaker 1: and I get the idea that not only could they
- 30:24Speaker 1: get this Ferrari and and do whatever little restoration it needed,
- 30:28Speaker 1: but there's also just the story behind it made it
- 30:31Speaker 1: kind of a cool thing. Yeah, this was the car
- 30:33Speaker 1: buried in south central Los Angeles. Yeah, and I look
- 30:36Speaker 1: at it now. This made national news it also is
- 30:39Speaker 1: Sandra wests burial made national news and that had just
- 30:42Speaker 1: been several months before. Um, so the you know, the
- 30:46Speaker 1: two were compared. It was buried Ferrari fever in the US.
- 30:49Speaker 1: And how close that was very close? Interesting, I mean
- 30:53Speaker 1: different years. But she was buried in May, and this
- 30:55Speaker 1: happened I think in um like the following year or
- 31:01Speaker 1: like less than a year later. Okay, all right, So
- 31:06Speaker 1: the car actually was not in good shape at all,
- 31:08Speaker 1: to say the least, they were, And boy, I love this.
- 31:11Speaker 1: This is why it's a Ferrari. Twenty one layers of paint,
- 31:15Speaker 1: fourteen layers of primary, seven layers of paint. Um they were.
- 31:19Speaker 1: It was in bad shape. The paint was freckled. It
- 31:22Speaker 1: was had white spots all over it. Rust. Of course,
- 31:26Speaker 1: you can't bury a Ferrari and cover it with rugs
- 31:29Speaker 1: and expect it to you know, that'll take care of it.
- 31:32Speaker 1: So rust it eaten through it through the body. Um.
- 31:36Speaker 1: The leather interior was in bad shape. What did the
- 31:39Speaker 1: thieves do with some towels? So they were smart enough
- 31:43Speaker 1: to stuff towels into the intake to keep dirt and
- 31:46Speaker 1: worms and stuff from getting into the engine. But they
- 31:49Speaker 1: neglected to do that in the exhaust pipe. They had
- 31:52Speaker 1: put some towels in between the window cracks, I think
- 32:00Speaker 1: dangle the towels over the outside, but then didn't roll
- 32:03Speaker 1: the windows all the way up. So they weren't doing
- 32:05Speaker 1: a very good job. But in their defense, they had
- 32:08Speaker 1: to bury Ferrari in the middle of Los Angeles. How
- 32:13Speaker 1: did this How did this not get noticed? I don't know.
- 32:15Speaker 1: But the cops when they canvass the area, the neighbors
- 32:18Speaker 1: were like, we have no idea. The residents of the
- 32:21Speaker 1: house were renters and they'd only lived there for three months.
- 32:25Speaker 1: They had no idea. So they the cops just basically
- 32:28Speaker 1: were like, well, it's a stolen car that was already
- 32:30Speaker 1: written off. It's a it's a done case. We're not
- 32:33Speaker 1: gonna break our backs trying to find out what happened here.
- 32:36Speaker 1: It's pretty obvious what happened here, So they sent it
- 32:40Speaker 1: off to Farmers. That's right in very bad shape. And
- 32:43Speaker 1: even pulling this thing out of the dirt, obviously the
- 32:46Speaker 1: engine compartment got crushed, uh, all scratched up and gouge.
- 32:50Speaker 1: The windshield was smashed, which Rick Sen a Bogan it's
- 32:54Speaker 1: in cod could have picked you right up, looks you're
- 32:58Speaker 1: right up in an afternoon. Actually probably not, because imagined
- 33:02Speaker 1: it for one shield like that is pretty hard to
- 33:03Speaker 1: come by. Um sorry, Rick, but uh, the idea that
- 33:09Speaker 1: someone could restore this thing was not true seemingly. Yeah,
- 33:15Speaker 1: and well, like Farmers was getting such um so many
- 33:19Speaker 1: calls and we're having to deal with the public on
- 33:22Speaker 1: such like a large scale that they decided to just
- 33:24Speaker 1: put it on display. So anybody who called in inquiring
- 33:27Speaker 1: about it, they said, well, here's the address. You can
- 33:30Speaker 1: actually go bid on it if you want it, and um,
- 33:32Speaker 1: people did, but they didn't really make too many serious bids.
- 33:36Speaker 1: They mostly just stripped the car as best they could.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Somebody took the dipstick. Even this Gelopnick article said, I
- 33:42Speaker 1: wonder if that was just let me get a piece
- 33:44Speaker 1: of this saying, or if it was like I can't
- 33:47Speaker 1: find a dipstick for mine, maybe both you know, or
- 33:50Speaker 1: eBay doesn't exist yet, but it will someday. I'm gonna
- 33:52Speaker 1: sell this thing for a million bucks. Yeah. So this
- 33:56Speaker 1: was a couple of weeks on display in Pasadena. Where
- 34:00Speaker 1: As this article says, everything that was not bolted down
- 34:03Speaker 1: was kind of nicked from it. I can't believe they
- 34:06Speaker 1: just didn't have security or something. Yeah, I don't. I
- 34:09Speaker 1: guess they weren't doing a very good time. I mean
- 34:11Speaker 1: it was a junk Ferrari so but still, I mean
- 34:13Speaker 1: they were taking bids on it. They didn't. It wasn't like,
- 34:16Speaker 1: you know, come come take what you want and say, Oh,
- 34:19Speaker 1: it's not like a starving artist sale at a hotel
- 34:21Speaker 1: conference room or something, you know. Alright, So the long
- 34:24Speaker 1: and short of it is, in the end, they did
- 34:26Speaker 1: take some bids after it had been scrapped and gouged
- 34:32Speaker 1: by onlookers. Right, So here's here's where the legend kind
- 34:36Speaker 1: of picks up again. Right, You've got this car that
- 34:39Speaker 1: has like a legendary status already, but it's also totally
- 34:43Speaker 1: tragic if you are a Ferrari enthusiast. This is a sad,
- 34:47Speaker 1: sad story. Um. But it's purchased by somebody, some unknown
- 34:53Speaker 1: person actually, like a mechanic I think who owned his
- 34:56Speaker 1: own garage in Burbank, tried to start it and like
- 35:00Speaker 1: for for something. For some time, there were some dispatches
- 35:03Speaker 1: coming out of this restoration project because the public apparently
- 35:07Speaker 1: knew that this guy had actually gotten it to start,
- 35:10Speaker 1: but then the engine just collapsed and it didn't look
- 35:14Speaker 1: very good. Right, Yeah, what do you pay? But like
- 35:17Speaker 1: between five and nine grand. Yeah, it's pretty good deal,
- 35:20Speaker 1: but it was in pretty bad shape. Right. So after that,
- 35:23Speaker 1: the Ferrari just kind of disappears for a little while.
- 35:27Speaker 1: And then somehow the Ferrari enthusiasts public could confirm that
- 35:34Speaker 1: the thing had been resurrected, it had been licensed, it
- 35:38Speaker 1: had been restored to its former beauty. They had a
- 35:40Speaker 1: new plate called dug Up, right, But then it just
- 35:44Speaker 1: is gone. It's not listed on any of the Ferrari
- 35:47Speaker 1: registries or the Dino registries or anything like that. It's
- 35:52Speaker 1: just they know it's out there, but they don't know
- 35:54Speaker 1: where it is. It just becomes like this phantom, which
- 35:57Speaker 1: makes it even cooler. And that's where the story ended. Originally,
- 36:02Speaker 1: there were there were a couple of Gelopnick articles and
- 36:06Speaker 1: it's a good website, It really is a great website.
- 36:09Speaker 1: And there was one Gelopnic writer in particular who was like,
- 36:12Speaker 1: that was a pretty good article, but I want to
- 36:15Speaker 1: know more about. His name was Mike Spinelli, and he
- 36:17Speaker 1: did a follow up he dig he dug in even
- 36:20Speaker 1: further to this legend. He wanted to find that Ferrari,
- 36:22Speaker 1: and he actually ultimately was successful. But what he turned up, Chuck,
- 36:26Speaker 1: was an even bigger twist to this story than digging
- 36:29Speaker 1: up a Ferrari in the middle of south central Los Angeles.
- 36:32Speaker 1: That's right. He ultimately found Dennis Carroll, that one of
- 36:35Speaker 1: the original lead detectives Lenny and Carl he was, and
- 36:41Speaker 1: he learned the true story, which was kids did not
- 36:44Speaker 1: find this thing playing in the dirt. That didn't happen
- 36:46Speaker 1: at all. It was actually discovered because of a tip
- 36:50Speaker 1: from a c I right, and if you've seen the wire,
- 36:52Speaker 1: you know what that stands for. It's a confidential informant.
- 36:56Speaker 1: He was a heroin addict and I want to say
- 36:59Speaker 1: he assume was guy for some reason. Yeah, it could
- 37:01Speaker 1: go either way. Yeah, I just hear a confidential informant
- 37:04Speaker 1: heroin addicted. I think, dude, not fair, ladies, I'm sorry, right, Yeah,
- 37:08Speaker 1: she'll leave us out of that circle. Uh. So he
- 37:12Speaker 1: and his partner had made Uh Lenny had had made
- 37:15Speaker 1: up that story about the kids finding it. I guess
- 37:20Speaker 1: because it was a police matter. It was a confidential informant,
- 37:23Speaker 1: so they had to cook up this fake story. They
- 37:25Speaker 1: I don't know if they had to, but they they
- 37:27Speaker 1: wanted to sniff painting off the case. Um so so
- 37:31Speaker 1: they Yeah, they just protected their source and said it
- 37:34Speaker 1: was kids playing, and that became how this car was
- 37:38Speaker 1: found for decades, that was the story. Any anyone you
- 37:41Speaker 1: heard that story from, unless you were probably the wife
- 37:46Speaker 1: of Joe Sabas or the wife of Dennis Carroll, they
- 37:50Speaker 1: would say they would start with some kids were playing
- 37:52Speaker 1: in a yard and found this car. Totally made up, right,
- 37:55Speaker 1: So that's twist number one that they found. Twist number
- 37:58Speaker 1: two is actually the fact that this was all a
- 38:01Speaker 1: set up job to begin with by the own Did
- 38:04Speaker 1: we say he was a plumber, Yeah, the plumber. Uh basically,
- 38:09Speaker 1: I mean what could he not afford it? So he
- 38:11Speaker 1: decided to have it professionally stolen to get an insurance claim.
- 38:16Speaker 1: That's my impression, that's what he did. We don't know
- 38:18Speaker 1: the reason behind it, I think for my interpretation, and
- 38:22Speaker 1: it's up for interpretation because he was never charged with
- 38:25Speaker 1: this crime. Oh really Yeah, it was written off as
- 38:29Speaker 1: a loss right which we all pay for it. Let's
- 38:32Speaker 1: be honest, right, Um, the the this is my this
- 38:37Speaker 1: is the Josh Clark interpretation of this crime. Rosando Cruz
- 38:42Speaker 1: very much loved his life his wife, so he bought
- 38:45Speaker 1: her a Ferrari that he couldn't afford. But did I
- 38:48Speaker 1: say he very much loved his wife, he didn't want
- 38:50Speaker 1: to tell her that he needed the ferrari back. He
- 38:54Speaker 1: arranged for it to be stolen and maybe make some
- 38:57Speaker 1: money on the side as well, and then he would
- 39:00Speaker 1: pretend to be mad that the ferrari was stolen, and
- 39:03Speaker 1: all of his problems would be solved, right, which is
- 39:05Speaker 1: why he cooked up the story about being wary of
- 39:07Speaker 1: the valet parkers. So this is why I need to
- 39:09Speaker 1: park it on Wilshire and that's where it was arranged,
- 39:13Speaker 1: pre arranged to be taken. And he he kind of
- 39:17Speaker 1: thought like, oh, you're gonna like strip it for parks
- 39:20Speaker 1: and then drive it into a ravine, Yes, which makes
- 39:23Speaker 1: sense in a weird way. Right, then you could fence
- 39:26Speaker 1: the parts so you get some extra money, and then
- 39:29Speaker 1: he would pay them out of the insurance claim. That's
- 39:32Speaker 1: not how it went down. He didn't say bury this
- 39:34Speaker 1: thing in south central l A right without stripping it
- 39:36Speaker 1: of basically any parts. I think they took the the
- 39:40Speaker 1: Ferrari logo off of the back of the car. But
- 39:43Speaker 1: everything else was points to the idea that the thieves
- 39:46Speaker 1: were gonna did Mike D's first necklace, but they they
- 39:50Speaker 1: every all of the way that the car was buried
- 39:53Speaker 1: points to the idea that the thieves were gonna come
- 39:56Speaker 1: back for it some day. There was an attempt to
- 39:59Speaker 1: preserve it. Let me throw some rugs on this, and
- 40:01Speaker 1: not only are we getting paid for steal on the Ferrari,
- 40:03Speaker 1: but we're going to dig it up and drive it
- 40:04Speaker 1: out of the whole one. Yeah yeah, wow, because it's
- 40:07Speaker 1: got all wheel drive probably that's pretty amazing. So um,
- 40:10Speaker 1: from what I understand, Rosander Cruiz was never charged with
- 40:13Speaker 1: this crime, even though the cops knew. Good for him,
- 40:16Speaker 1: I guess, um. But and that was just my interpretation.
- 40:20Speaker 1: I don't mean to cast any shade on him, but
- 40:22Speaker 1: just from my research. If that's not the case, my apologies,
- 40:26Speaker 1: But that that is what it looks like to me.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Here's the thing. He didn't get the check. The Bank
- 40:32Speaker 1: of America got this well. Yeah, so if that was
- 40:35Speaker 1: the point, he didn't think it through very well well,
- 40:37Speaker 1: but he was out from under those payments at least, right.
- 40:39Speaker 1: That's why I think he did it. He didn't have
- 40:41Speaker 1: to pay that like seven hundred dollars a month. I
- 40:44Speaker 1: can't imagine, though, I mean, like I think about it.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Just think about buying an eighty thousand dollar car. It's
- 40:49Speaker 1: a lot of dough dough, it's a lot chuck. But
- 40:52Speaker 1: now that car would be worth about three hundred thousand dollars.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Well it's still around though, right, yes it is. Sorry,
- 40:58Speaker 1: there's still more to the story. Yeah, guy named Brad
- 41:01Speaker 1: Howard actually owns this car that was buried and trashed underground,
- 41:06Speaker 1: which is a pretty amazing into this story is that
- 41:10Speaker 1: this thing is actually restored to its former glory and
- 41:13Speaker 1: still owned by a guy. Yeah, and the guy Mike
- 41:16Speaker 1: Spinelli makes this point that, um, when the Ferrari was found,
- 41:22Speaker 1: it was in pretty bad shape, despite what Priscilla Paynton
- 41:25Speaker 1: said in the article, But it could have been in way, way,
- 41:30Speaker 1: way worse shape. And the reason why it wasn't in
- 41:33Speaker 1: in worse shape than it was was because those years
- 41:37Speaker 1: seventy between ninety six seven and most of night there
- 41:44Speaker 1: was a huge drought in southern California, the same drought
- 41:47Speaker 1: that actually created skateboarding. Because nobody could fill up their pools.
- 41:52Speaker 1: So skaters started skating the Z Town Dogtown z boys.
- 41:56Speaker 1: There you go. They they started skape warding because of
- 42:00Speaker 1: this drought. That same drought preserved this car a little
- 42:03Speaker 1: bit underground, more than it would have been had it
- 42:06Speaker 1: rained a lot. Right, And that's the end of that chapter,
- 42:11Speaker 1: Paul Harvey style. So you got anything else? No? I mean,
- 42:17Speaker 1: I wonder if this has happened again, maybe we'll do
- 42:18Speaker 1: a whole suite on buried cars. I would love to
- 42:21Speaker 1: know that. Yeah, if somebody, if you know that there's
- 42:23Speaker 1: especially if somebody buried another Ferrari, let us know. We'll
- 42:27Speaker 1: add it and make it a hat trick. Please. Uh.
- 42:29Speaker 1: In the meantime, you can go look up buried Ferrari's
- 42:32Speaker 1: all over the internet and on gelot Nick in particular,
- 42:35Speaker 1: who did a great job of digging this story up.
- 42:38Speaker 1: That was unintentional. Uh. And since I said it was unintentional,
- 42:41Speaker 1: it's time for listener mail. I'm gonna call this another
- 42:46Speaker 1: teacher rights and we always like to feature teachers in
- 42:49Speaker 1: their classes. Hey guys, longtime listener, first time writer. Just
- 42:54Speaker 1: listen to How the Sun Works episode again and wanted
- 42:58Speaker 1: to thank you for selecting it as a stuff you
- 43:01Speaker 1: should know. Select did you do that? I did? Oh?
- 43:04Speaker 1: Why did you do that to it? I don't know.
- 43:07Speaker 1: I just thought it should be out there again because
- 43:09Speaker 1: it's a legendarily one of our most troublesome shows. She
- 43:13Speaker 1: said it brought back, brought back awesome memories. Though. How
- 43:16Speaker 1: the Sun Works was my very first episode that I
- 43:18Speaker 1: listened to, and it's the one that made me decide
- 43:20Speaker 1: to continue listening. How about to give you a second chance?
- 43:23Speaker 1: And she's like, are these guys for real? I think
- 43:26Speaker 1: it was your disclaimer that you were not professionals, wanted corrections,
- 43:29Speaker 1: and that you're continuing remarks for that we're badly screwing
- 43:32Speaker 1: this up, and it made me want to keep listening.
- 43:35Speaker 1: For the record, I thought you were charming, relatable and
- 43:37Speaker 1: delightfully human and wanted to hear more every time I
- 43:41Speaker 1: listened to the show. And here you mentioned the awful
- 43:43Speaker 1: sun podcast, and where I right in and tell you
- 43:45Speaker 1: that that's the one that actually started my eight year
- 43:47Speaker 1: and counting love affair. How about that? That's something Like
- 43:51Speaker 1: many others who have been listening, your show has become
- 43:53Speaker 1: very special to me, not only because it helped me
- 43:55Speaker 1: through many long card trips and intensive home projects. But
- 43:58Speaker 1: because I've listened, there's some very formative years in my life.
- 44:01Speaker 1: I started listening as a teenager, and I feel like
- 44:04Speaker 1: y'll are friends who have been with me through high school, college,
- 44:07Speaker 1: in my early married years. And now I am a teacher.
- 44:11Speaker 1: I teach seventh and eighth grade math, science, language, arts,
- 44:14Speaker 1: and social studies, and I feel like I'm constantly telling
- 44:17Speaker 1: my students facts and tidbits that I learned that week
- 44:20Speaker 1: from your show. And now I am middle aged and no,
- 44:22Speaker 1: I'm retired, now I'm dead. Uh, seriously, it never fails. Guys,
- 44:26Speaker 1: Thanks again for all you do. Looking forward to many
- 44:27Speaker 1: more years to come. That's from Hannah Barton and uh
- 44:32Speaker 1: Ms Barton or Mrs. I don't know which. It's probably
- 44:35Speaker 1: Miss Barton's class, right, yeah, Miss Barton and your class. Hello,
- 44:39Speaker 1: thank you for listening. Oh boy, thank you for giving
- 44:43Speaker 1: us a a second chance after that being your first episode. Yeah,
