Latest / Now That We're A Family / 532: 50 Things We No Longer Buy For Our Family
Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: So today we're going to get down to the root of decluttering, and if you're decluttering, that's a red flag in my book.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_00]: That is just showing that we have a buying problem.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to talk about 50 things we know, longer by and our family, as a family of eight, all about to be nine, and how this is really eliminated at Alisha's and might need to declutter her home and get rid of stuff.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's probably something we do less than once a year.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_00]: and sometimes it's just helpful to see what someone's buying or what they're not buying.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_01]: Well, so you're saying that if you're decluttering, you're already wrong.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_01]: Are you allowed one declutter per year?
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think a whole house declutter is a wonderful place to start, but if you could make every quarter a new decluttering video, or if you're watching someone, make a new decluttering video every quarter, then there's a chance that buying is the issue.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: We shouldn't be having to declutter.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you picture mom, paw on their house back in the 1800s.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: They weren't decluttering.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: They did a spring cleaning, but you did not have all this stuff.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: You were throwing away.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: And so I know initially when we started decluttering,
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: I was really proud of how many bags of stuff I got rid of, and then I quickly realized I shouldn't have this many bags over and over and over, or there is an issue here.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just filling landfills and buying a ton of junk that I'm now having to manage and haul around my house.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: So again, an initial declutter, great pair of things down, maybe you take it in one phase or two or three phases, but then it shouldn't be this ongoing process that's always happening.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I would say the accumulation of things and stuff isn't always due to making the purchase.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: That's what we're going to be covering in this video.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: But we live in such a materialistically abundant country if you're in the United States of America, oftentimes you're given things by parents, by family members, by friends.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: And so I know that that's a whole other topic that a lot of our listeners have asked questions regarding this.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: How do you, if you've got a certain standard of,
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: for toys or for, you know, not electronic, you know, you don't want to do electronics, electronic devices or certain clothing items, but then you're gifted them over and over and over and over again.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: How do you, I guess, you know, respond to that.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: But that's another episode.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: We're just talking about things that we no longer purchase.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, things that are within our control to have enter into our home or otherwise.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and this is no judgment on anyone who finds themselves doing decluttering more often at all.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: This is just kind of a litmus test that we have in our home where if we are consistently decluttering, we kind of go, whoa, okay, pump the brakes.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: At one point, we bought most of this stuff.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: what are we spending our money on?
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: I do think that you will have the best idea for your home, if you're constantly decluttering, things that other people have given you.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's just something to look at the items and be like, did I purchase this or was this given to me because absolutely something's outside of our control?
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: And there's nothing wrong with, you know, don't be ashamed of your decoletteers, but it's just something to consider, I think, as address the root cause, which can be the buying.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: That said,
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: This is nothing to do with what I was just talking about, but Vogue music academy, we do have a discount code for you guys.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: If you're looking to learn a music is a family for piano, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, we just wrapped up the fall challenge.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: full contest.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: And it was so much fun.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: We're diving into the Jingle Jam Challenge here soon in November going into December.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's a really fun time of year to get just Christmas songs playing through your home, having your children enjoy those.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 3:52[SPEAKER_00]: with the jingle jam challenge everybody's winner.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: So it's a wonderful time to jump in if you're new, just starting to learn an instrument and have that community motivation.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: This is something that our kids are so motivated by when they see other families putting together songs or other individuals progressing on their instruments.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: they get very excited and they don't feel like they're just learning an isolation or mommy and daddy are just making them practice.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: They feel really motivated themselves.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_00]: So anyways, we have that discount code down for you guys below and we'd love for you guys to jump in this fall so you're ready for when we kick off that jingle jam challenge.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so jumping into today's episode when Katie, you know, kind of bounced this idea off of me and the title was something along the lines of 50 items we no longer buy or known purchase, um, I started thinking about things that I no longer purchased.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: and I can't think of anything because I've never been a big purchaser of items.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: I like spending money.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: I've stopped that I am against spending money.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: But in the history of our relationship, I've never really been to buy the things guy.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: uh... sometimes to your chagrin sometimes to your delight uh... but that's still kind of nice to be a fact so i'm not much of a purchaser but i will say this as we get going i do think be actually checking the bank statement i know people talk about that all the time you know look at your calendar look at your bank statement and that will actually tell you the truth
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: to what your priorities are, is becoming more and more helpful as our purchasing habits look different than they used to.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think that less people are going to the supermarket, less people are going to big box stores to do their shopping and they're doing it a lot more online.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so it might not feel like you're buying as much as you used to buy even though you are.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's just coming to your home via Amazon and it's coming in boxes.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: And so I still think it's always such a good practice, especially with your spouse getting on the same page and looking at the based bank statement and seeing where the resources are going.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, as you say that I'm laughing when we pulled up to our PO box and I just ordered a ton of school items and clothing items.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: I did a big fall like curriculum purchase and book purchase and clothing item purchase all the same time.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: We pulled up to our PO box and like she comes out to the car like Santa Claus with all these packages.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: We have 40 packages here.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like back in the day if this was like your mom's you would have just come home with like Grocery bags full of stuff, but it's all coming in separate packages through the mail I just feel a little defensive right now.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, we have okay truth be told we've had our fair share of marital Diff's over items purchased I think I mean most marriages can relate to that.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know where you're kind of like wait, why are you buying that thing or how many of those do we need?
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know, or how much was that?
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: That's it's not like a consistent point of conflict for Katie and me, but it's certainly showed up in our marriage.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's definitely happened.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so something to keep in mind that my mom always says is everything becomes a maintenance issue.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: So you think you're buying it to bring it into your home so it's going to make your life easier and that's what sales tells us is this is going to make your life easier but then it's something else to dust and wash and manage and put away and everything including your organizational items.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: So like your items used to organize the stuff that you have.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: So it's just something to consider is that everything is going and then almost everything today is going to become trash because
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: So, okay, should we go through children?
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we don't buy for the children.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's start with the kiddos.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, toys.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: We buy zero toys for our kids.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: Lego would be the exception when they finish a math book.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I'm trying to think objectively on this.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: We have been known.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: So when we went on our family vacation this last summer, each of the kids got to choose an item at that toy store.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: Do you remember that?
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: You're right.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_01]: And so one got like a board game, which is a pretty good choice.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: One got a pair of swimming goggles.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: So very useful.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: So good.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: Another child got,
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: What were the other things that were purchased there?
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: One, our daughter got like this magnet doll that you could like dress with different clothes.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: Were there any other bands?
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, rubber band gun.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: I think was the other thing.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, and a pair of sunglasses, I think.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: You're right.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: Because five, we got five.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_01]: We got it for the five kiddos.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: And so we did, we did push them twice in that instance.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: it's true.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: As you can tell, we know when that instance was.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: So anyways, but as a general rule, that's not something that we think to buy.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like I never go to the toy aisle if it's not to get a Lego set specifically.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: Other things like art kits, we don't get those, we don't buy holiday
- 9:00[SPEAKER_00]: That doesn't count a life should be seen.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: No, I'm not trying to make a game.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not trying to debunk.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not trying to debunk.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: He's here.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's the honesty, please.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: Well, no.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: We have things in our case.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: We have that in our house.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, oh, that's right.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_01]: That was given to us.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: And so this is your.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's so far, so good.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm trying to be some annoying fact.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's great.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: You're not a night.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: The fact checks are good.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: But holiday theme clothes, I think they just, they don't wear out fast enough.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: We don't buy more than a week's worth of clothes for children.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's what the wear through in a season.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: And holiday theme clothes, they don't wear out in the holiday.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: So then you have to throw them out or what?
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: You have Christmas pajamas that don't match when you're the next baby the next year.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: You wouldn't just say, but tell the next Christmas season.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they're all going to be a different size bigger.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, there's hand me down.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: No, I wouldn't say it for the next season.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's more stuff that you have to store in their way.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have extra bedding, so we have one sheet for each one of the children and one do they.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: Which is really impressive because not only do we not store those things, it's like when the laundry starts, you just finish it.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: Like you crank it out when you start washing.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: We start doing the limits.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: That's always very impressive.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it just helps, first of all.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: And then we have no extra coats.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I say that we have one extra coat, one.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_00]: And then the boys will share it between them if someone's missing a coat.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: We've only got one pair of boots for all the kids.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: For a kid, be a per child.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, they all share one pair of boots, so I'm just gonna cook all today.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I do have a fall clothing haul that I'll link because I do have a video explaining all of that.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: But basically for the kids, this is just stuff that we don't buy.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: We don't buy newer used clothes if it's a deal or a pair of shoes that are a great purchase because and save them for maybe when a child's gonna fit them because they're a great brand.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's just we don't, we don't bargain shop.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_00]: and that's just something that we don't do.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think it's been a huge blessing to the family, like as a, as a whole, the...
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: Again, I'm just a huge fan.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_01]: Katie has been so gracious to accommodate my desire to not have a lot of extra stuff lying around because it is something that kind of, it's definitely a preference of mine that I feel like you've gotten on board with, especially considering how many pairs of shoes you had when we got married and how you would have just kept going.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: You've really toned that down.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: I feel very honored.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_00]: I did spend a lot of money on shoes before I got married.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: That's funny.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's good.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: It is really nice that you aren't a stuff guy.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think for me.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_00]: That's a great.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, in terms of baby gear because we are, oh, you know what, one other thing on the kid category that we don't buy is character themed anything.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing's character themed.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: Again, Lego is the exception because you don't buy Lego really that's not character-themed, um, but I guess the creator kids.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that, um, there's a few reasons for this.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: But the one that has to do with the binding is that kids outgrow the characters, I think, and thinking that the character is cool.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: And so then you have this extra pair of sheets or you have all these clothes, you have all these action figures or something.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just not something that we want to keep around.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: So it's aesthetically, I don't love character type stuff and you don't really either, but it's just not something that we'll like really lean into if a child is thinking a certain character is cool.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the longevity piece isn't there, and I do think that, again, nothing lasts no item lasts forever.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: But going back to the bedding or to the sheets or to the clothing, those are all very, like, I would say, neutral if there's something very just kind of like timeless about the way all those things appear.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: And so it doesn't seem like any of them have a short-term expiration date.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's not like, oh, that's a little kid, you know, betting set, or that's such a girly bed, you know, bed set, they're all very neutral.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: So we just try to think longevity.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: OK, so we're going into Baby Gear because this is Baby Season 4 us.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: And we're about to have our seventh baby.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: So we have not purchased for our first lot of kids' cramps.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't purchase cramps.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: Um, we've just purchased pack in place because those were able to take down and hold that said I have a really cool vintage crib that I did get for this baby.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: So I can't really add that.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: But um, we don't have baby monitors.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have pacifiers.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have a diaper bag.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't have anything for bathing a baby.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_00]: No special soap, server mats, or brushes, or oils.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: No more than five outfits.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: We usually get like five onesies.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: And that's all we have for the baby.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: And no paraphernalia like electronic swings or no electronic stuff, I guess.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: You're the baby.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: We had, I mean, going back to our first child, and I think it was like a baby shower gift.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: We had that, that about, what do you call it?
- 14:14[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we actually had two things.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: We had like the Johnny jump up thing, but we never had a place to put that.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so that didn't work out.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: So we never, we didn't keep that, but then we had one of those things like, is tilted, you know, the hinges and springs up and down, it kind of has them sitting upright, like that bounce or thing.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: And we are, I think, given that at a baby shower, and we used it often on for, I think, our first child or two, and so we just got worn out, or we lost it in a move, but we never replaced it.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we liked that, that bouncer thing, for sure, and move that around.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: But that was kind of our one piece of baby gear.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: Some things that we do have, that's not on this list, but I do have a sleep sack, and we have a good stroller.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: Those are things that I would invest in.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_01]: Oh man, we were given this stroller for our first child, our first child, so this has been nearly 10 years ago because it was when you were pregnant and it has served us so well.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: And we've never wanted to do like the side-by-side double bob, this is a single bob stroller that we are given.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I love the narrow nature of the single Bob and we use it as a double Bob because I'm sure a lot of people do this.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's like you put the baby like you know strapped in and then whoever's the next oldest can sit on the front section there and it works as a double Bob.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, it's it's a lot more user friendly.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think than double Bob's anytime I've borrowed when the doubles are like how do you get around with this thing?
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's true.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's funny one of my friends was like, I quote you all the time.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: A single bob.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, every bob is a double bob.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just how we view it in our home.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_00]: So that said, we just don't buy the baby stuff.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_00]: And same thing with the baby monitor, it's like those panic me more than they help.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to see every time the baby rolls over, or see how close they are to the edge of the sheet.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_00]: It just stresses me out.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like, I'll hear if you cry.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, in the kitchen, we have no kitchen organization, like no kitchen organizers or things to organize stuff.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think that, like it just sits on the shelves, and I think that organizers can be a big area of clutter.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: Right, this is called the Collect.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: they do, they collect and they fit certain spaces and then you decide you want to change the arrangement of something or move the space or the colors don't go like I used to buy a lot of organizers and it just it didn't work out well for us.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like when you have one of those corner cabinets with one of those like lazy or not lazy to use and type things as if they're called things that likes to go around of them.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: Like that is that's where if you have one of those you are inevitably going to fill up with things that you will never see again in your life.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like they get to that back part of that and it's there you never know at ever again.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's true.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: We have to see it's just collect stuff is what I'm trying to say that and then you will buy another one she can't find, you can't find that you have it.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: You can't find the other stuff.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have any child specific dishes in our home, Coral makes great.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it doesn't chip and it rarely breaks.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I love Corel's stuff and then we have wood cups for the kids, but nothing is child-specific.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: Cippy cups, water bottles, oh, I mean, I say that.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: We have water bottles for the boys, but like specific like little kid, Cippy cups or bottles or something.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: Like, we go straight from a bottle
- 17:46[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no cippy cups.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: And this has actually been the first year that we've been really, uh, like, I guess, like intentional with getting the kids water bottles and it's because of how consistent they've been with their sports.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_01]: And they really like having their own and we don't have more than what we use for water bottles.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_00]: We have three child children who play sports and we have three water bottles for them.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: And it's funny because our other son is asking for a bottle
- 18:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because the thing is, of course, their water bottle gets left in a car or gets taken outside randomly and left out at a fort.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_01]: And so when they're getting ready to go to practice or go to class, and they can't find their water bottle, then they just go, they go find it.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_01]: They go figure out where it's at, and I think that if you've got multiple, then even more get lost than you buy another one, then more get lost, and so just having that standard has been really helpful.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're so right.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like we don't have a water bottle drawer.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like, hey, go get a water bottle.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's like, if you're missing yours, that's a bummer.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: You don't be dehydrated.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, then when it comes to, oh, one more thing with the kitchen is we have no single use kitchen gadgets.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: So everything serves multiple purposes.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: I have no like, oh, you slice the egg or the avocado with this.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's because Katie's skilled.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: And so you read like, remember that when you read that book?
- 19:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of like a technology.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_00]: The technological society.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_01]: And you're like, this is great.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: No wonder I'm like, so, you know, I guess, dexterously gifted or something.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: I've got such a big idea.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: That is not what I said.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: You're shocked.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: Because you're like, we've had such like, we've been so low tech.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: I've had to learn to use all these different kitchen or like these, this one kitchen knife.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: a hundred different uses and so uh... add to something's very inspiring yeah i've kind of romanticized the middle ages i think yeah more than it should we have pillars well we don't have a pillar what's funny is i had a pillar for a period of time and it's not like i wouldn't get a pillar again i don't know where it went and then what's funny is i've just been not peeling things and just watching them and anything's with a skin on and i don't i've liked that
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: And it's been great.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_01]: Things have been awesome.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's like the carrots still tastes good.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: No doubt.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: Sweet potato still tastes good, right?
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: Like, regular potatoes taste good.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_01]: Anything that you would feel.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: I hear there's a lot of nutrition.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: I meant to ask you about that if it was bothering you.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_01]: I've noticed it and I've actually enjoyed it.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_01]: And then with apples, unless you're maybe making an apple pie, but I'd be curious to see how like an apple pie or an apple crisp would taste with the...
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: I like them with peels on.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_01]: See, there's a go.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: You're missing out if you're peel-in-stop.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: So, anyways, it does save time, and there's a lot of nutrition in the peel.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: So there's that.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing is my mom came to my house.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: My goal was to not have a can opener, and to get used to pressure canning or beans and stuff like that, or buying tomato products that weren't in a can, and we're in a glass jar, I wasn't gonna grow all my own tomato products.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_00]: And then my mom came to my house and she bought a can opener.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_00]: And she was like, I cannot live without a can opener.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: You need a can opener.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_00]: So we do have that currently and you know, that's that would be a single use item.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_01]: But we don't really use it.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: But it's there if someone needs it, needs to open a can.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, a couple of other things, I don't buy purses, I don't buy bags, I have one purse, and that's the purse, until the purse breaks, and then I get another purse.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_00]: And again, no diaper bags, no stuff like that.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: For the laundry, we don't have dryer balls, dryer sheets, fabric softener.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: There's so much paraphernalia.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_00]: You go down like, I don't even know all the items in the store that are set aside for laundry.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and this is something that again, our kids might be like total reactionary, you know, adults, and they will want all the different items for different activities, who knows it's going to be their decision to make their very happy children now, believe it or not, okay, and I'll keep saying it so that people know how happy or children they're so happy.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_01]: But it's funny because I remember being a kid you want to like a gym bag You wanted like all the different items You know like your water bottle your sweat bands like the special socks for your shoes like the different braces that people would wear You know like the longs Stuff and like you could just go on and on and on with each sport having their own thing and this still is the case Like when we show up at jujitsu our boys have like the bare minimum like they've got
- 22:22[SPEAKER_00]: They want slides, they want, yes.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: They want all the things.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, in a lot of the kids show up with their like, jujitsu specific bag and all the paraphernalia that they go as long with it.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like, we don't do, again, maybe we'll regret this, but we don't do mouth guards.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_01]: We don't do with huna things that like everybody has.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_00]: Correct.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: Correct.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: Same with Lucy and jujitsu.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's, sorry, in gymnastics.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's like she just shows up with her lia tart and that's how we do it.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: Anyways, I appreciate it.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it does, especially when you have multiple kids doing sports, Tony, and down as much as you can.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I can't see depending on the sport, if that sport has a ton of gear to go with it, being like this is your bag and keep it all on your bag.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_00]: Might be a helpful thing we do down the road, but at this point, just flying.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: is low profile as we can, because even like the guise, there's a lot of stuff that goes with the jutsu gui, and we just keep it all on a bin.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, even going bare minimum with most sports, you do end up with a lot of gear or things.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_01]: But I just don't think we're into having a ton of extra.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_01]: You know, just kind of like those auxiliary items.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_00]: No, a clutter's of the laundry room, or the bedroom, or wherever it is.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of beauty products, I don't have hair products.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_00]: I have shampoo, a panting shampoo.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have jewelry.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: I wear all my jewelry.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_00]: I have my necklace, now my bracelet, so now my earrings.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I wear them till I lose them, and then I get another set.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't have different makeup.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_00]: So if I look the same all the time, that's why.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_00]: I've got one of everything.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_00]: And that's it.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_00]: Again, I'm just not artistic in this way, so I don't have extra eye shadows or different bronzers for different times the year or, you know, I just wear the same thing all year.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really curious, Katie, if you can reflect back to when we got married and who even who you were as a single person.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and relate that, I guess, compare that to who you are today, because it either you've adapted dramatically just for me, or maybe you've been this way all along, or I think that what my hope is is that we've really kind of grown in the same direction over the last 10 years.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: And that is something that hopefully most marriages can say, you know, after a time of being married, is that like your appetites and your desires and your
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: like your wish lists for things look very similar and that's kind of how I feel like we are.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's not that I would love to for you to buy whatever you want for yourself.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's just that I think what shows up my radar also shows up on your radar.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't know how you think about that.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like when you think about the jewelry thing or when you think about the makeup, thing is at the type of thing that you think you've made an intentional shift in from like 10 years ago or do you think it's been kind of who you've been all along?
- 25:07[SPEAKER_00]: That's a good question.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_00]: Only she's always so good with the questions.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: Since you're a question, because I'm wondering if I'm like depriving you or this is actually- Definitely not.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_01]: What you want?
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: No, definitely not.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think, um,
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like the overwhelm and I like to eliminate decisions.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: So I find that if I just have one of something, then the decision is simplified for me.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: I do think having more children has made that a more desirable process.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe when I was single, it sounded more fun to like, oh, let me try to do my hair this different way and it will take two hours and that's fine because I'm just killing time to like it to go out and be seen.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we're now, it's just like, I just need to get ready and I need to get the kids ready.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: And so it eliminates decision-making processes.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_00]: I know that you are down to purchase me anything my heart desires.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's how I feel.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: Because I do think me being not much of a stuff person, like a things person, is actually pretty, it's been there all along when I think back, even because one of my sons just wanted to start playing electric guitar,
- 26:13[SPEAKER_01]: and he was trying to make it sound like a certain recording, and he's getting, he's starting to become proficient on the guitar.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: So he's like, I wanted to sound like this on this recording.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, well, they've got like this distortion pedal on their senate through this delay.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: We don't have like, we just have an electric guitar in an amp.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_01]: And like, it's a pretty like clean sounding.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_01]: electric guitar sound and it just took me back to being like 1718 and 19 when I got an electric guitar and then quickly became disenchanted with a concept of being an electric guitar player because of all the gear.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: But you look at these guys, you know, pedalboard and you look at all the like extra accessories and I'm like, I just love my acoustic guitar.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: I love that I can take this thing out of the case and it sounds how I want it to sound and
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: My mandolin, and so I think I've always had this, I've always gravitated towards like very simple things.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: You still have the same instruments that you did have, like the electric guitar or son's playing as the one you have in your songs.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_00]: And absolutely mandolin.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's that they were asking me why I don't, I was in a wedding earlier this year, and the group's men were all gifted a watch, and which is great.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, wow, what a cool gift.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_01]: And like, why don't you wear your watch?
- 27:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, I've just never been an accessory guy.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_01]: And so I feel like this is kind of, I feel like I haven't had to compromise at all.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just trying to clear my conscience here.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_01]: Because I feel like I would feel bad if you felt like you compromised a lot, became less of a materialistic person because of me.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: Because I feel like this is just kind of how I've always been.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: No, I agree.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think we value the same things.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: We value experiences, we value investments.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like the music school, we don't value cars.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know, there's certain things that we've just both been really aligned on, which has been nice.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that too, I think there's some women who's husbands like to see them with more accessories.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_00]: or, you know, like variation or things like that.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I never feel like that's something that you're like, I'd love if you like mixed it up, you know?
- 28:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's like you're fine with me wearing the same stuff for.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_00]: So that's nice.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I could see how, I mean, I think I could get into different things because there are so many different acoustic guitars that have a different function.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm like, all this would be so nice.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be able to play.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: more jazz on this type of guitar or bluegrass on this type of guitar and like if I was doing more Celtic rhythm this would be great.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like the guitar I have now is a very good jack of old trades guitar and this probably why I keep playing it but there are some guys that just like the different variations of things too it's like they'll get three of a very similar firearm because they can and they know the nuances too but like you know I like having
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: one AR, one 9-millimeter pistol or I get there sometimes it's nice to have multiple of certain things but I just like the one thing that works.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're also just super generous and you buy step for our whole family and you just don't buy step for yourself because even as you're saying that I'm like, yeah, you probably would like other instruments, you just don't buy step for yourself.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like a lot of you just wear it wearing like the same
- 29:18[SPEAKER_00]: down jacket that you had when you were 14.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_00]: That was gifted you.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like when I married a life show all his clothes from when he was like, very young.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_00]: And as they've given way, he doesn't replace them.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: So then I have to kind of try to figure out how to get him clothes that he likes.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, you just don't buy stuff for yourself.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: You don't what's funny, though, is that we lost a bunch of clothing like the two years ago accident and I went and shopped for like the first time since being married and I came home and you did not like one thing I was wearing I didn't like it either, but I just didn't know how to shop.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's I like I didn't take it personally But you're like, what are you wearing?
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: Where did you get this?
- 29:59[SPEAKER_00]: It was like a different person like everything you was wearing
- 30:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I didn't, again, I didn't think it was like cool.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I didn't know where to go.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_01]: Like this is what the store had.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_00]: You would have made a great model for the store, but it just didn't look like my husband.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, this is another area where I think a light-shener aligned.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have extra exercise equipment.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like we have a big space for a home gym and we bought a bar.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_00]: What do you call those?
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like a barbell?
- 30:30[SPEAKER_00]: A barbell.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like a barbell and then squat.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_01]: You did get a squat, right?
- 30:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that was my purchase.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I should have been buying it for myself.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_00]: for a week or something, and then Elijah uses it every day, and I don't.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_00]: But we don't have rollers and mats and bands and extra weights and balls, and, you know, again, that's a whole other category, people get very into it.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_00]: And this isn't saying that there's anything wrong with getting into any one of these categories.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's just for us, we don't buy this stuff.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_00]: Like I have the one set of dumbbells, that's a good set of weights for me that I use.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_00]: Elijah is the barbell, and that's how we lift weights.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_00]: And again, maybe down the road one of our boys will get into it or whatever, but we just don't want to manage the stuff right now.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's zero judgment for any of these, like I actually like it when people buy stuff and use the stuff and have an appreciation for the stuff.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: And it's even more inspiring, inspiring when people buy the stuff and then are really generous with letting other people use the stuff as well, because there's a lot of people that we know that are like that.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_01]: They're very generous with their, you know, with their items.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I want to be generous with the stuff that we do have as well, but we don't I don't think to myself Oh, I need this for my home gym or I need that for you know camping is another area that like you can really start getting items And last year we did make a pretty big investment in a couple backpacks and then a tent and some sleeping bags to get the boys more equipped So now me and three of our boys are fully equipped for backpacking, which is really nice
- 31:56[SPEAKER_00]: you guys have water filtration and you have the little stones.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: And part of that was the lifeshad to get that gear for a like snow camping course or something that you did a few years ago and then so he had a lot of that for a course and then the boys.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_00]: you outfitted what a year ago or something, but again, I do think there are things that we've decided to outfit for, but once that for whatever reason we both have this quote of once the need is filled, we don't keep going back.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like once my kitchen was done, I don't buy dishes for my kitchen anymore.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's been a year and I haven't bought a new dish.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_00]: you know, or, or you with the backpacking stuff.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's like once the boys were outfitted, you don't keep going back to that outdoorsman store being like, oh, there's this rope biking kit.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_00]: And there's this cool other variation of water filtration or, you know, it's just kind of like, well, we have that item.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_00]: We're not going to continue buying.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we just like using things.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_01]: Like we really like using our instruments, the camping gear, the workout equipment, and so we're not usually waiting around for like the next items so that we can use it more.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad you're right up the camping thing, because that's another thing.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_00]: And again, there's so many cool gizmos and gadgets for every single one of these categories.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_00]: We just aren't the gizmos and gadgets stuff.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_00]: We just want the quota filled so we could do the activity.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: one area I would like to grow it and I know I keep derailing you here okay but I think an area that I like that I'm very motivated to grow and I would actually say if I if I made I have grown in the last couple of months since making the point to want to grow and that is having tools on hand
- 33:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's like having them organized, knowing where they're at, because again, I've never been a tool.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's like something breaks.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: I would like figured out, I have broken a lot of tools, misusing them.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so it's like, well, this might work.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see if I can crank it enough with this thing.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a lot of stripped, like screws, you know, in our house and like bolts.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_01]: But I have gotten better.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: and organizing the tools.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think that again, we don't have a lot of tools, but if you do tools can be very useful if you know where they're at and you take care of them.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I think now that I have boys, I feel like it's incumbent upon me to teach them how to steward things.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's why I got serious even with the camping gear.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_01]: Is it's like when we go out camping now, we always bring it out, drop, make sure everything's dried out, cleaned out, before we, because when you come home from a camping trip, you're usually wiped out, right?
- 34:29[SPEAKER_01]: And all the kids want to go do is just like,
- 34:31[SPEAKER_01]: Going on the couch or something, it was like, now we've got to clean out our gear, make sure everything's tidy and reorganizing and we hang up our backpacks, you know, where they were and I kind of want to have be able to have the same M.O.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_01]: with tools because right now it's like our boys, grab whatever tool they want they head out to the woods and it's then we never see that tool again or that has been, I should say, an M.O.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: But in this because we never had a place for them to return the tool to.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that is something that again, this is getting into more of an organizational thing.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: But I could see the accumulation of tools being helpful once we have a system for keeping them organized.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, you've done a lot better at that.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_00]: And just keeping our shop organized, you've been on top of that, looks so nice, knowing where everything is.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_00]: And yes, having a place for everything and everything in its place, that's really hard to do when you have more items than you need, because then you're just stuffing stuff places and you know piles versus like, this is the one hammer and it's right here.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then the one finishing hammer and it's right here.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_00]: And then it's very obvious when you look at the wall and it's missing, it's like who took the hammer.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I think you end up buying so many more things than what you need when you don't know where the things are at.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you just keep, I know I've done that count this times.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_01]: Where it's like we end up with another, you know, pair of wire cutters because I couldn't find the wire cutters that when I needed them.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_00]: So another thing we don't do subscription boxes, mystery boxes of any kind, like why would I sign up to have something show up at my house full of junk once a month?
- 36:06[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that just stresses me out.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_00]: Um, we don't do stocking stuffers for Christmas.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_00]: This is something that, um, when we started doing Christmas very early on, I would see people's, I was like, okay, how do you do Christmas now?
- 36:19[SPEAKER_00]: I never bought Christmas gifts.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_00]: And...
- 36:24[SPEAKER_00]: The stockings diver stress me out because it looked like people were just trying to find stuff to fill the sock with.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_00]: And so we do socks, like literal socks, and they usually get gum.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_00]: Elector lights and then maybe a flashlight or a pocket knife or like something that's not a stocking stuff or but it's a small gift and just want we kind of again going back to like little house in the prairie um they were excited to get their orange and their peppermint stick and their mittens or whatever it was and so that's kind of our expectation or kids expectation for the stocking as not like we're going to dump this out and see what starts flying everywhere it's going to be an
- 37:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think it makes it all the more meaningful.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_00]: Something else, something else we don't purchase, digital minimalism is a whole other thing.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_00]: Subscription Services, we pay for a ton of subscription services running online businesses.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_00]: So sometimes I'm like, what are we paying for?
- 37:23[SPEAKER_00]: I still feel that way, but it's more the business side of our life.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_00]: With the movie or the personal side, we don't have any digital subscriptions.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_00]: personally, like movie subscriptions or things like that.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_00]: We have an Amazon account, but the funny thing is, is most of the movies that we would like to watch.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: So that's four Amazon Prime, you know, ordering stuff, but then most of the videos we want to watch, we actually buy on YouTube.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_00]: And have them archived there, kind of like an old, like how you used to store, I guess.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the thing for telling it is as long as it is.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: We still buy movies sometimes.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_01]: We do family movie nights, but oftentimes we just go back to our archive.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_01]: We're like, oh, we want to watch follow me boys again.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_01]: We want to watch the sound of music.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_01]: And they're there.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_01]: The band of green cables, it's archived away.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so you don't really rent, like, it's rare we will rent a movie, a live show and I might rent a movie on YouTube.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_00]: But most of the time, we just purchased them on YouTube and just watched the same old, same old movies.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_00]: Um, holiday themed decor.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_00]: I don't buy holiday themed decor.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_00]: I did, again, our first couple years of celebrating Christmas.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_00]: I was like,
- 38:40[SPEAKER_01]: you're ready to do it.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_00]: I was ready to try it, you know, but now it's like we have the tree, we have the bowls, we've got more and a minutes I guess would be that one of the things we do, we store them, but sometimes we'll purchase some new ones too.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: And then now we live further out so we could do like real garlands or whatever and then I have one old garland that we've kept.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_00]: The couple things we do have, I guess we've kept from those first two years.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not like I go out holiday to course shopping.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_00]: for probably the last like four years.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, do you have that cool little like treasure like house?
- 39:18[SPEAKER_00]: I do like the little advent calendar.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_00]: I got that our first or second year of Christmas and we get that out every year.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_00]: So we do have a few traditional items we get out, which is fun, but it's not.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like I couldn't do holiday to core haul because I haven't holiday to core since our first couple of years that don't Christmas.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_00]: And again, we just so we do have a bin of seasonal decor for Christmas time.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_00]: that we get out.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_00]: I've talked about organizers.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_00]: We don't buy organizers anymore.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_00]: I do buy baskets.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: Baskets are very versatile, though, because you can put them in a lot of different places in your house.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not like they just fit one space.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_00]: You can give it away as a gift basket if you decide, you know, you're done with this basket.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_00]: It just brought a basket up that we used as an Easter basket and just put my daughters blankets in it.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like there are a lot more versatile than buying a specific organizer for your Tupperware Lids or something like that.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_00]: And then the other thing I was going to say, oh, as I don't buy Tupperware.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_00]: which I don't buy paper towels or paper napkins unless we have, um, you know, hosting a big party or something like that.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: I just like using cloth things, but with something I do buy that's very disposable that we go through a lot of our ziplock bags.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_01]: We do use a lot of ziplocks.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_00]: And that has been, so I used to have glass Tupperware, but that was really becoming a stressful maintenance issue for me trying to find the lids to go with the Tupperware and nothing ever fit the right size.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_00]: And again, that is just more sustainable, healthy, all these things.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_00]: So it might be something we go back to.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_00]: I can see it being something we go back to at some point when I have more bandwidth to manage the Tupperware or the Pyrex.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_00]: I should say, but our fridge does not have the capacity to store the amount of leftovers that we have in pyrachs containers.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_00]: So the Ziplock bags work so much better for leftovers in extras because they just kind of mash in there.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_00]: So it doesn't look as good and I'm not proud of the disposability of it.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, we could probably, as I'm talking this out, just get non-disposable.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's a porkbex.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_01]: There we go.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_01]: Now we're talking.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like nods at blocks, you know, just the plastic, healthy plastic bags, because I really feel like that just can fit so much more food in our fridge than the top of where or the pyrex.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_00]: And you don't have to find a matching lid.
- 41:58[SPEAKER_00]: As I'm saying, that's a great idea.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: Let's do it.
- 42:00[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_01]: Next purchase, see that's the thing.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_00]: It does become something else to manage.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: And in the case of disposable stuff, most of the time I am on the side of go for the non disposable item and learn how to manage it.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_00]: But there are seasons of life when that's not ideal.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like when we were living in our tent though, we did have until the last month in the winter.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't use any paper goods.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: We just used glass.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_00]: And I do think there's an element of using non-disposable items that makes the people around you feel cared for.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_00]: So that is, I think the primary reason why I love it, even though it's like great to eliminate waste and all those things too.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_00]: With home school, we don't have any home school manipulatives.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_00]: We used to have an abacus, and now we are just down to fingers.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_00]: Fingers work great, and my kids that have been taught on fingers have the same concept and grasp conceptual math that the kids that use the abacus.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I, you know, they need an extra visual grab some cups down from the shelf for stackables.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_00]: And you like, this is average.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_00]: This stack of three bowls, five bowls, four bowls.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_00]: You see this?
- 43:13[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_00]: Great.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_00]: Put a back on the counter.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_00]: They don't need special manipulatives or counting cubes or whatever.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's a classic like going from one child to seven or seventh child.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's so hard.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_01]: the first child, they have apricus or apricus, they're called, and then they would get, you know, a lot more paraphernalia, right?
- 43:33[SPEAKER_01]: They get all of the pieces.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_01]: And then by the time you get a child four, then five, then six, you're like, okay, what is necessary?
- 43:38[SPEAKER_00]: See these pencils I'm holding up, great, that makes sense.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_00]: There are, that is not to say, that, um,
- 43:48[SPEAKER_00]: We do not have a lot of a few things like we have five packing plates, we have nine white noises and we have a ton of books so there are things in our home like we host families and people need babies to be able to sleep places and so it's worth it to us to store those five packing plays and have them be ready and dark little spaces when we have a lot of guests.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_00]: So there are things that I'm not, and we aren't minimalists in terms of just trying to have the bare minimum of things.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_00]: There are things that really serve our life and are worth storing.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_00]: So for actively using items for a purpose, then we will keep them.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_01]: No doubt.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we've got like three folding tables that we don't always use.
- 44:35[SPEAKER_01]: They're stored.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_01]: but we want them.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like we have enough events throughout the year where we pull out those folding tables, it's very worth it for us to keep them.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_00]: So again, I do think the minimalist lifestyle I started to see could lead towards a more selfish lifestyle because then you don't have items to share.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_00]: And this is something that I realized when I went over to another woman's house and she goes, I'm a maximalist.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: And we were in a time where we didn't have a lot of stuff and she just had everything for us.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_00]: And it was such a way for her to extend hospitality.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I felt so blessed by it.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, you know what I went?
- 45:11[SPEAKER_00]: When people come to our home, I want them to feel that same hospitality.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, we have an extra baby seat.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_00]: So there are some things that, again, when guests come, we've got the extra thing.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_00]: We see it as a hospitality piece that we want to have in our home.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_00]: But I think the main thing is to not keep purchasing items
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: kind of going bigger and better on items like oh well I have that but this does that job better so all by this or you know just once the quote is filled let that item fall apart and then maybe go bigger better is kind of our our go to.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we usually only have one form of coffee making, right?
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: However, I do have an espresso machine downstairs, but it's rarely used right now.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_01]: At one point, that was my primary coffee device.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_01]: And it might become that again if we kind of rearrange things.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe in our bedroom, we don't want that in our kitchen counter.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_01]: Just doesn't quite fit the line.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_00]: We had it in our bedroom for a while.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's like giant, revel.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_01]: But right now we do, I think it's Breville, sounds good.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_01]: But right now, we just do pour over and we don't have like the French press, we don't have the curing, we don't have the arrow press, we don't have a bunch of options and so it is fun sometimes and you go to somebody's house and they're like, hey, you want French press, you want to spread so, you want pour over, you want drip coffee, you want it.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: like that that can be hospitality piece but at the same time for what we do it's like I offer coffee everybody but we do pour over right now that's what you get you know same with tea you know and same with boiling water we've got a kettle that we put on the on the stove top we don't have an electric
- 46:48[SPEAKER_01]: And we, again, if we felt like this was hindering us from being able to show hospitality and offer things to people, I would want to upgrade.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_01]: But I feel like, again, we want to be hospitable.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_01]: We want to be generous with, you know, any guests that come into our home.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't know if you always need a ton of variations of things in order to be hospitable.
- 47:08[SPEAKER_00]: yeah exactly like if you have one type of sparkling water to offer that can be enough instead of like five different drinks or something and I will say just on the linens note we do have a lot of gas bedding that sits down and a closet.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_00]: It is out of service unless guests arrive and then it's like we can sleep 20 people.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_00]: So, when I say linens, I don't have linens that are extra for the kids beds or our beds.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_00]: But for guests, we do have a lot of extra stuff that goes out on make shift beds and stuff like that.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_00]: So anyways, hopefully that gave you guys a few ideas.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_00]: I'd love to know what you currently not buy.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I do have walkthroughs of our pantry, how that's organized, or our kitchen, how that looks, and what dishes every single dish in our kitchen.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's all open shelving stuff like that on Substack.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: So for those of you who are curious on how this actually looks, it is pictured over there on Substack.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_01]: Awesome, talk to you next time everyone.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_01]: Bye-bye.
