Latest / Birdland Territory / Orioles drop series to the Padres, Gunnar Henderson gets plunked
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Birdland not the end of the homestand the Orioles and
- 0:09Speaker 1: their fans wanted. They won Friday night, scored a big
- 0:13Speaker 1: number against the Padres and looked like maybe a big
- 0:16Speaker 1: weekend was ahead. It did not happen. San Diego came
- 0:20Speaker 1: to Oriel Park not playing great at all. In fact,
- 0:23Speaker 1: there were four and twelve their previous sixteen games, but
- 0:27Speaker 1: they won that series. So that's a disappointing weekend in Birdland.
- 0:31Speaker 1: We're here to talk about it with you, Steve Brad
- 0:33Speaker 1: and Tim on Birdland territory and guys runners in scoring
- 0:37Speaker 1: position got him again, bullpen a little bit got him again,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and it was just a disappointing end to the weekend.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I mean, the Oriols just can't seem to get beast
- 0:46Speaker 1: the three game winning streak hump, and that's been a
- 0:49Speaker 1: hurdle for this club this year.
- 0:51Speaker 2: And it was again, Yeah, it was again. You're right.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It was a great start to the weekend. Friday. You
- 0:57Speaker 2: thought there was gonna be some fireworks and a lot
- 0:59Speaker 2: of home runs here, and unfortunately it just kind of
- 1:02Speaker 2: ended up being a dout of a weekend. I think
- 1:04Speaker 2: Saturday's game really set up kind of the pressure of
- 1:06Speaker 2: today's game, knowing they didn't use their big arms in
- 1:09Speaker 2: the bullpen, knowing what the Padres had, and you could
- 1:11Speaker 2: kind of tell the way they use Walker Buller today
- 1:13Speaker 2: that they were ready to have their big arms through
- 1:16Speaker 2: multiple innings and you got to get a lead against
- 1:18Speaker 2: a team that has an elite bullpen like that, and
- 1:21Speaker 2: it just kind of just fell flat on them there
- 1:23Speaker 2: this weekend and kind of overall this homestand it was
- 1:26Speaker 2: they had a little three run game, their three game
- 1:30Speaker 2: run there in the middle, and it just didn't really
- 1:33Speaker 2: work out. It kind of just got back to the
- 1:35Speaker 2: same field that they've kind of been spinned their tires
- 1:37Speaker 2: with here. It seems so far to this point in
- 1:39Speaker 2: the season.
- 1:40Speaker 3: That's been the big thing, right, It's one step forward,
- 1:43Speaker 3: one step back, one step forward, two steps back. And
- 1:46Speaker 3: when we were doing the show last Sunday and the Orioles,
- 1:49Speaker 3: they just finished that three and three road trip and
- 1:52Speaker 3: we're like, Okay, they're back home. They're a much better
- 1:54Speaker 3: home team. But you knew the task in hand. The Mariners,
- 1:57Speaker 3: they're leading the American League West, and that was a
- 2:00Speaker 3: four game series, and then the Padres, who, like you said,
- 2:03Speaker 3: Steve really struggling coming in, but gosh, does that lineup
- 2:06Speaker 3: have stars up and down, and some of those guys
- 2:09Speaker 3: were really able to get going this weekend. Manny Machado
- 2:13Speaker 3: had a strong series. Jackson Merrill coming home, he had
- 2:16Speaker 3: a strong series. But Brad, you hit it with this
- 2:20Speaker 3: Padres team. Their superpower is that bullpen and Mason Miller
- 2:24Speaker 3: is absolutely ridiculous and the Orioles found that out firsthand
- 2:28Speaker 3: in the ninth inning. But it was a frustrating afternoon
- 2:32Speaker 3: right because Trevor Rodgers I felt like this was his
- 2:36Speaker 3: best start that we've seen in a while. I know
- 2:38Speaker 3: he gave up the two earned runs early on in
- 2:41Speaker 3: that game, and I was just unlucky. You had the
- 2:43Speaker 3: ball hit off second base and flew into the outfield
- 2:48Speaker 3: where that could have got him out of the inning
- 2:50Speaker 3: at that point. But they fell behind. The defense really
- 2:53Speaker 3: struggled late. They gave the Padres attack on run and
- 2:57Speaker 3: unfortunately it ended with the series loss for the Orioles.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I don't know what to make of the Oriols with
- 3:04Speaker 1: the runners in scoring position stat If fans probably think
- 3:09Speaker 1: they're among the worst in baseball, they are not, and
- 3:12Speaker 1: the reason for that is they have brief stretches where
- 3:15Speaker 1: they are very productive with runners in scoring position, but
- 3:19Speaker 1: it always changes. On my substack, I published like a
- 3:23Speaker 1: fifteen game run recently. Three games, Wow, it was great,
- 3:26Speaker 1: two games it was bad, two games it was great,
- 3:29Speaker 1: four games it was bad. And it was like a
- 3:31Speaker 1: roller coaster up and down, no middle ground. And we
- 3:35Speaker 1: just saw it again in the final two games against
- 3:37Speaker 1: Seattle they went seven for seventeen and they scored fourteen
- 3:42Speaker 1: runs in two games, but in the last three games
- 3:46Speaker 1: they went two for twenty two. Now they scored seven
- 3:49Speaker 1: runs on Friday night without a lot of runners in
- 3:52Speaker 1: scoring position. But it's this up and down. Now, here's
- 3:55Speaker 1: the yearly stats. They're eighteenth in batting average. Okay, that's
- 3:59Speaker 1: not great. Here's a surprising stat fans will be surprised by.
- 4:03Speaker 1: The Ores are a fifth in Major League Baseball and
- 4:05Speaker 1: slugging with runners in scoring position and seventh in ops.
- 4:10Speaker 1: So that shows you it's not a total zero. But
- 4:13Speaker 1: it can feel like it when you have a weekend
- 4:16Speaker 1: like they just had.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and it just kind of seems like you said, Steve,
- 4:20Speaker 2: it's they have really good stretches where it's like, Okay,
- 4:22Speaker 2: here comes the team. We kind of expected, here's a
- 4:24Speaker 2: lineup we want to see this season, and then you
- 4:27Speaker 2: have games like the last two and you're just kind
- 4:28Speaker 2: of like, it's just not really adding up. It's not
- 4:31Speaker 2: making sense that there is no middle ground there. You
- 4:33Speaker 2: would think at some point it will kind of just
- 4:35Speaker 2: level off, but it really really seems to be peaks
- 4:37Speaker 2: and valleys right now with runners in scoring position, and
- 4:40Speaker 2: it's just kind of a weird thing about baseball. Baseball stats,
- 4:44Speaker 2: to me, are just some of the weirdest in any
- 4:45Speaker 2: of the sports. Some of them don't make sense, some
- 4:47Speaker 2: of them make perfect sense. This is one of those
- 4:49Speaker 2: stats that to me, it's like you said, when you
- 4:51Speaker 2: watch the team, especially this weekend, you're thinking, they got
- 4:54Speaker 2: to be one of the worst in the league in
- 4:56Speaker 2: uh with runners in scoring position. But it's just not
- 4:58Speaker 2: the case. It's just a us a weird season so
- 5:01Speaker 2: far to this point, and it just can't it just
- 5:03Speaker 2: can't seem to find middle ground anywhere. When it comes
- 5:05Speaker 2: to kind of just getting to a certain point and
- 5:07Speaker 2: staying there, it kind of seems to get up and
- 5:09Speaker 2: then go down, and it's kind of just like kind
- 5:11Speaker 2: of like a stock market a little bit out there.
- 5:16Speaker 3: It's funny, Steven, and maybe we're just so prisoner of
- 5:19Speaker 3: the moment. And obviously it was a really rough day
- 5:21Speaker 3: with runners in scoring position today, But I am surprised
- 5:24Speaker 3: they're that high. I wonder if you could somehow split
- 5:27Speaker 3: that out to runners in scoring position when it's a
- 5:31Speaker 3: close game. It just seems like a lot of these
- 5:34Speaker 3: big time spots, like the sixth inning, for example, get
- 5:37Speaker 3: first and second, nobody out. Leody Taveres laid down another
- 5:41Speaker 3: perfect sack bunt that was his seventh of the season.
- 5:44Speaker 3: You have runners on second and third with one out
- 5:47Speaker 3: and Colton Kowser he struck out Jackson Holiday he ended
- 5:52Speaker 3: up pinch hitting for Jeremiah Jackson and he struck out.
- 5:55Speaker 3: So you weren't even able to put the ball in
- 5:57Speaker 3: play in such a critical moment of that game where
- 6:01Speaker 3: you were just trailing two to one.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And the Oriols is another surprising stat They have hit
- 6:07Speaker 1: twenty five homers with runners in scoring positions. Boy, it's
- 6:11Speaker 1: hard to remember a single one right now when the
- 6:14Speaker 1: recency bias is so bad, But the stats are there.
- 6:18Speaker 1: We'll tell you that, so I'm not selling the Oriols
- 6:21Speaker 1: is a great hitting team. Of runs in scoring position.
- 6:23Speaker 1: That's would be crazy, but that there's been enough good
- 6:26Speaker 1: that there's some stats there. They just haven't done it
- 6:31Speaker 1: with consistency, and they certainly didn't do it this weekend.
- 6:34Speaker 1: But glad you're with us today. I hope you'll subscribe

- 8:15Speaker 1: All right, thank you Tim. And one thing that happened
- 8:17Speaker 1: this weekend was a little interesting was a little beanball
- 8:21Speaker 1: incident of sorts. I guess here on the Saturday, when
- 8:25Speaker 1: Trey Gibson had one get away from him. Hits boguards
- 8:29Speaker 1: they seemingly throw at Gunner Henderson. We can't get in
- 8:32Speaker 1: their heads. In the seventh inning, two pitches didn't hit
- 8:35Speaker 1: him either time, then completely plunked him on Saturday in
- 8:39Speaker 1: the ninth inning, and you could see Gunner was not
- 8:43Speaker 1: pleased about that at all, and so Jake Rill sent
- 8:47Speaker 1: out via his Twitter from MLB dot com Craig Albernas
- 8:51Speaker 1: on the hit by pitch and ejections. There were two ejections.
- 8:54Speaker 1: The pitcher who hit Gunner, Merret Naccio, was tossed and
- 8:58Speaker 1: so was the Craig stamming the skip of the padres
- 9:01Speaker 1: Trey hit Bogarts in the head, and their Doug act
- 9:04Speaker 1: didn't like it at all. Obviously, it definitely wasn't intentional.
- 9:06Speaker 1: It was a two seam that slipped out of his hand.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I get there where they're mad. The ball hit him
- 9:12Speaker 1: in the head and he had to come out of
- 9:13Speaker 1: the game. I'm not saying the ball to Gunner was
- 9:15Speaker 1: on purpose, but it was done the right way and
- 9:18Speaker 1: that's why there were no gripes from us. And Gunner
- 9:21Speaker 1: was fine with it and just took first base. So
- 9:26Speaker 1: he didn't look completely fine to me. Actually, if I've
- 9:30Speaker 1: allowed to express my thought, and so, what do you
- 9:34Speaker 1: guys make of what happened Saturday? And we should say
- 9:37Speaker 1: there was no carryover. Really, I didn't think there was
- 9:40Speaker 1: anything to agregious. No one was hit on a Sunday's game. Brad,
- 9:45Speaker 1: What do you think about all of it?
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you know, when somebody gets in the
- 9:49Speaker 2: head and they have to come out of the game,
- 9:51Speaker 2: especially someone like Xander Bogart's who's been around a while,
- 9:54Speaker 2: you have to kind of imagine there's going to be
- 9:56Speaker 2: some kind of retaliation. And to me, there's kind of
- 10:00Speaker 2: an underten rule. You have one chance to get retaliation.
- 10:03Speaker 2: And I thought they tried to get Gunner earlier in
- 10:05Speaker 2: the game, missed them twice, two fast balls way in
- 10:08Speaker 2: off the plate. I mean, I think it was Arrigaz.
- 10:12Speaker 2: He throws a lot of stuff away he throw He's
- 10:14Speaker 2: a changeup dominant guy to the lefty. To me, that
- 10:16Speaker 2: was pretty obvious they were trying to go get Gunner
- 10:18Speaker 2: back for hitting Xander there and then in the ninth
- 10:21Speaker 2: inning there. I mean, when you hit a guy right
- 10:23Speaker 2: in the middle of the ribs, it's to me there
- 10:26Speaker 2: was intent there, and the manager can say whatever they want.
- 10:29Speaker 2: The pitcher's going to try to play it off like
- 10:30Speaker 2: he wasn't trying to do it. Whether he was told
- 10:32Speaker 2: by one of the team, his teammates or to me,
- 10:35Speaker 2: it just looked like somebody told him this needed to
- 10:37Speaker 2: be done. We need to get retribution for Xandergan have
- 10:40Speaker 2: to come out of the game. Regardless if it was
- 10:42Speaker 2: intentional or not. It's a scary thing when somebody gets
- 10:44Speaker 2: in the head like that.
- 10:46Speaker 3: But I think doesn't common sense need to take over
- 10:49Speaker 3: a bit, brad Like Trey Gibson walked five guys in
- 10:53Speaker 3: that game. You know, this wasn't a pinpoint command game
- 10:56Speaker 3: for Trey Gibson by any stretch. And I don't know,
- 10:59Speaker 3: I just kind of thought it was a little bs
- 11:02Speaker 3: to be honest. You throw it him twice in the
- 11:05Speaker 3: seventh inning and then you hit him right in his
- 11:07Speaker 3: ribs won out to go in that ball game, And
- 11:10Speaker 3: I thought Craig albern Has his comments were very interesting,
- 11:14Speaker 3: to say the least, did not too often do you
- 11:16Speaker 3: have the manager sort of taking up for how the
- 11:21Speaker 3: other team operated. And we all know what happened. I
- 11:24Speaker 3: know the Padres manager. He ended up coming out and
- 11:27Speaker 3: he ended up getting tossed, of course, but Gunner was upset.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Man Gunner was definitely very upset going down the first
- 11:33Speaker 3: base line. But Brett have you ever been put in
- 11:37Speaker 3: that sort of situation as a player, saying you got
- 11:40Speaker 3: to drill this guy.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it's actually funny. When I was my first ever
- 11:44Speaker 2: big league spring training in twenty eleven with the San
- 11:47Speaker 2: Diego Padres, I got sent down to minor league camp.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I wasn't on the roster, so I was able to
- 11:51Speaker 2: come still pitching the big league spring training games during
- 11:55Speaker 2: spring training. So I come up to face against the
- 11:58Speaker 2: Dodgers and I get done with my first inning, and
- 12:01Speaker 2: there was kind of some beef between Jonathan Broxton and
- 12:04Speaker 2: him hitting a few of the Padres guys in spring
- 12:06Speaker 2: training games. So the manager kind of sits down next
- 12:09Speaker 2: to me. He's like, hey, next inning, you know, I
- 12:11Speaker 2: want you to go inside on somebody. If you miss it,
- 12:14Speaker 2: you miss it, if you know what I mean. And
- 12:15Speaker 2: I'm like, he's telling me to hit somebody right now.
- 12:17Speaker 2: I've never been I've heard about these conversations, and this
- 12:19Speaker 2: is this is a while ago. Now, we're talking fifteen
- 12:22Speaker 2: years ago at this point, and so baseball was a
- 12:24Speaker 2: little different back then. But it came from the manager
- 12:26Speaker 2: and he told me I got two outs with nobody
- 12:30Speaker 2: on and hit the first batter first pitch on the
- 12:32Speaker 2: inside part of the plate, just threw it on the
- 12:35Speaker 2: inside and made sure that it didn't come back over
- 12:37Speaker 2: the plate, and it was It was a weird spot
- 12:39Speaker 2: to be put on, especially because I was ticketed for
- 12:40Speaker 2: double A and they told me I was going to
- 12:42Speaker 2: double A at that point. There was no plans for
- 12:45Speaker 2: me to be in the big leagues at any point soon,
- 12:47Speaker 2: at any point during that season. I end up getting
- 12:50Speaker 2: called up later on that season, but it was just
- 12:52Speaker 2: it was one of those things. It's a weird thing
- 12:54Speaker 2: that is done. And Tim, I agree with you with
- 12:57Speaker 2: what you said. It's kind of I don't know. The
- 13:00Speaker 2: place of it in today's game is just it's dangerous.
- 13:02Speaker 2: It's guys are throwing one hundred miles an hour. They're
- 13:04Speaker 2: throwing every single pitch max effort. Back when I first
- 13:07Speaker 2: got called up, I think the average fastball was eighty
- 13:09Speaker 2: eight eighty nine. So there's a big difference between eighty
- 13:12Speaker 2: eighty nine to every guy today throwing ninety four to
- 13:15Speaker 2: ninety seven. There's a lot more danger involved. They don't
- 13:18Speaker 2: have as much pinpoint control. It's more about it's kind
- 13:21Speaker 2: of your stuff that you're using as opposed to location
- 13:24Speaker 2: and back during then it was guys throwing eight eighty nine,
- 13:28Speaker 2: like I said, the starters, and you're hitting him right
- 13:30Speaker 2: in the butt. He's going to first base. They got
- 13:31Speaker 2: the point. The other team gets the point when we
- 13:33Speaker 2: move on today. It just kind of seems like you're
- 13:36Speaker 2: trying to hurt guys when you're doing that. And luckily
- 13:38Speaker 2: Gunner isn't hurt or he might have a bruise rib today,
- 13:41Speaker 2: but that's a dangerous spot to get hit as a hitter,
- 13:43Speaker 2: and I just think they had their shot. They missed
- 13:46Speaker 2: their chance to go back out there and do it again.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Was a little bit too much, in my opinion.
- 13:53Speaker 1: And maybe the first pitcher for the Padres did not
- 13:57Speaker 1: intend to hit gun I don't know, maybe because he
- 14:00Speaker 1: threw high and tight. I mean, even if they hit
- 14:03Speaker 1: your guy in the head, and you can't think that
- 14:05Speaker 1: was intentional. I mean, as you guys said, Trey Gibson
- 14:09Speaker 1: was struggling with his command, but the buzz the guy
- 14:12Speaker 1: high and tight. When they hit Gunner and finally got him,
- 14:15Speaker 1: at least it was in the ribs. Okay, I'm sure
- 14:17Speaker 1: that didn't exactly feel great, but wasn't head high the
- 14:21Speaker 1: earlier pitches seemed to be about there, So I'm not
- 14:24Speaker 1: sure what all was going on with San Diego and there,
- 14:28Speaker 1: but at least Sunday nothing got worse.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And I also think Steve, honestly, when you kind of
- 14:34Speaker 2: get told that, whether it was a teammate, whether it
- 14:37Speaker 2: was a coach, who ever told them, you get a
- 14:39Speaker 2: journal in rush big time, because if you hit somebody,
- 14:41Speaker 2: you don't know if they're going to come back out
- 14:43Speaker 2: at you. There's a real chance that that guy is
- 14:45Speaker 2: gonna come and charge the mound. So when you get
- 14:47Speaker 2: told that, and I can remember seeing back going a
- 14:50Speaker 2: Doug and I'm like, I'm not even on this team,
- 14:52Speaker 2: and if I hit one of their guys and I,
- 14:54Speaker 2: god forbid I hurt them, That's the last thing I
- 14:56Speaker 2: want to do. But this guy could come at me,
- 14:58Speaker 2: and now I gotta fight this like. It's just there's
- 15:00Speaker 2: a lot of X factor there that things can go
- 15:03Speaker 2: wrong really fast in the heat of the moment. And
- 15:05Speaker 2: that's why I just mess around with hit by pitch.
- 15:07Speaker 2: I just wish there was another way to take care
- 15:09Speaker 2: of this stuff if they feel like they needed to,
- 15:11Speaker 2: because the hitter is defenseless and you're as a pitcher.
- 15:14Speaker 2: You're in full control of what's going to happen in
- 15:17Speaker 2: that situation, not necessarily where you're going to hit them,
- 15:19Speaker 2: but you're in full control of where you're throwing that
- 15:21Speaker 2: baseball into me. It just it seems like things can
- 15:24Speaker 2: get really wrong, really fast in those situations.
- 15:27Speaker 3: It's definitely a great point. You're putting that picture at
- 15:30Speaker 3: risk because they didn't have anything to do with this
- 15:33Speaker 3: situation in the start of it, and heck, even Gunner
- 15:36Speaker 3: had nothing to do with it within the situation the
- 15:38Speaker 3: start of it too. When look, I know it's an
- 15:41Speaker 3: automatic ejection if you charge the mound, but that has
- 15:44Speaker 3: certainly not stopped people from charging the mound in the past.
- 15:47Speaker 3: It just ends up being a scary proposition.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Yeah, sure does. And so you know, back in the day,
- 15:54Speaker 1: pictures badded, but that has happened since nineteen seventy three,
- 15:58Speaker 1: so a long time. So now it feels like there's
- 16:02Speaker 1: an equivalent seat. If they hit our star, we've got
- 16:06Speaker 1: to hit their star. I don't think I don't think
- 16:09Speaker 1: they played utility infielder for utility infielder, but I mean,
- 16:12Speaker 1: Bogart's is a pretty prominent player, so obviously they weren't
- 16:15Speaker 1: gonna just hit just any oriole. They went for one
- 16:18Speaker 1: of the biggestorials and Gunner had to wear one. That's
- 16:22Speaker 1: got to be frustrating for a batter. I neverth you can
- 16:25Speaker 1: do with this and hew.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. And I always felt for guys that got
- 16:30Speaker 2: hit in these kinds of situations too, because they had
- 16:32Speaker 2: nothing to do with it. You're like, you just you
- 16:34Speaker 2: feel bad, as like Trey probably felt terrible. You know,
- 16:37Speaker 2: like he didn't mean to do it. Obviously, he lost
- 16:40Speaker 2: the pitch and it hit the guy in a very
- 16:41Speaker 2: scary place, but he must have felt terrible at the
- 16:44Speaker 2: end of that game when Gunner had to wear that
- 16:46Speaker 2: one of the ninth thing. But like again, it just
- 16:48Speaker 2: seems so unnecessary and like you had your chance, you
- 16:51Speaker 2: missed it. Just move on. Like I saw Carlos Quinin
- 16:53Speaker 2: get hit by Zach Gerenky one time. He ran out
- 16:56Speaker 2: and he broke Zach Grinky's collarable like Zach Grienky was out.
- 16:59Speaker 2: I don't know if he was out for the entire year,
- 17:01Speaker 2: but it's just you put it just became. Like I said,
- 17:04Speaker 2: it can just be a scary situation and you just
- 17:06Speaker 2: never know what's gonna happen. You don't know what the
- 17:08Speaker 2: hitters going through. You don't know what the picture's going through.
- 17:11Speaker 2: That guy could be having a really bad week at home.
- 17:13Speaker 2: He could. You just don't know how angry these guys
- 17:15Speaker 2: are when they do these things. And it's just things
- 17:17Speaker 2: can get blown out of proportion really fast, really quick,
- 17:19Speaker 2: and it's it can be dangerous.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Oh with Manny and town Manny charging the mound way
- 17:25Speaker 3: back when Heck, there was a clip that's been circulating
- 17:28Speaker 3: a lot recently. It might have even been the Royals
- 17:30Speaker 3: as well, where Chris Davis got beaned and he snaps
- 17:35Speaker 3: yes like a twig right on the ground and I
- 17:38Speaker 3: was like, dude, if Chris Davis is going to charge
- 17:40Speaker 3: the mound and I'm that picture like you've.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Been about it up the second base or center field,
- 17:46Speaker 2: I don't want.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Any parts of that.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Yeah, watching the game today and I'm half sort of
- 17:52Speaker 1: half watching, half reading something, and I see Tavares walking
- 17:57Speaker 1: tour back after making it out to a Duro dugout and.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Sheets is walking with him.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I'm like, what is the Padres player doing walking the
- 18:05Speaker 1: Oroo counpack to his own dugout? And then then later,
- 18:09Speaker 1: Masson played the replays that he was jawing with Walker Buehller.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Walker Bueller seemed quite agitated a couple of times today.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I don't know what was going on there.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. He's always been fiery. He's kind
- 18:21Speaker 2: of got that you know, kind of few mentality. There's
- 18:24Speaker 2: no I don't know how also like the other way
- 18:25Speaker 2: to say it, but it's just he kind of gets
- 18:27Speaker 2: fired up, and I think he had the kind of
- 18:29Speaker 2: the old school mentality, like why are you taking that
- 18:31Speaker 2: biggest swing on three to zero? But uh, he probably
- 18:34Speaker 2: said something or looked at him the wrong way, and
- 18:36Speaker 2: I think a little that was probably from yesterday. You know,
- 18:39Speaker 2: there probably were a little bit of tensions boiling over today,
- 18:42Speaker 2: but thankfully it didn't go any further than that. But it's, uh,
- 18:45Speaker 2: sometimes Pitcher's got to do things to motivate themselves, to
- 18:47Speaker 2: get themselves pissed off whatever. Maybe that's what it took.
- 18:50Speaker 2: A three zero swing out of fastball that he didn't
- 18:52Speaker 2: like or something.
- 18:54Speaker 1: And he was chirping at a couple oels today. I
- 18:56Speaker 1: was kind of hoping somebody would rock a three run
- 18:58Speaker 1: home or off him after that. But it didn't happen,
- 19:01Speaker 1: and the Padres left town with a series victory. So
- 19:05Speaker 1: Rico Garcia has had some struggles recently. This has kind
- 19:09Speaker 1: of come out of nowhere. I'm going to touch you
- 19:10Speaker 1: on that and a few more oriel topics coming up

- 20:15Speaker 1: Before we touch on Rico Garcia, I want to go
- 20:18Speaker 1: back to Mason Miller. You guys mentioned him earlier in
- 20:20Speaker 1: the show. This guy's ridiculous nineteen for nineteen and saves.
- 20:24Speaker 1: He's averaging average one oh one on his fastball. I
- 20:29Speaker 1: was looking at his statcast page. I've never seen a
- 20:32Speaker 1: statcast page like this. One hundred is top of scale.
- 20:36Speaker 1: That's the best you can get in a category. He
- 20:39Speaker 1: has eight one hundred scores, which means he is the
- 20:43Speaker 1: best in Major League Baseball in eight categories, ranging from
- 20:47Speaker 1: things like average exit velocity meaning they don't hit him hard,
- 20:51Speaker 1: to you know, velocity on his pitches to whiff rate.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I mean, it's he looks like on Hay On the
- 21:00Speaker 1: stat cast page, he looks like the perfect pitcher, and
- 21:04Speaker 1: on the field he looks pretty good too.
- 21:06Speaker 2: By the way, it's a pretty sickening when you can
- 21:09Speaker 2: throw one hundred and four and it's your second best
- 21:11Speaker 2: pitch like that's it just blows my mind when I
- 21:14Speaker 2: watch him. His stuff is just out of this world.
- 21:16Speaker 2: I remember watching the playoffs last year, he threw a
- 21:19Speaker 2: fastball in the absolute bottom dot down and away to
- 21:22Speaker 2: a lrighty. I still think about it. It was one
- 21:25Speaker 2: hundred and four dotted down and away, and it was
- 21:28Speaker 2: one of the nastiest pitches I've ever seen. But like
- 21:29Speaker 2: I said, that's the second best pitch. His slider is
- 21:32Speaker 2: literally unhittable. So this Padres team is just that back
- 21:37Speaker 2: end of the bullpen is just the stuff that they
- 21:39Speaker 2: feature is incredible, and Mason Miller is just the cherry
- 21:43Speaker 2: on top and it's incredible to watch. He's one of
- 21:46Speaker 2: those pitchers and there's few relievers I would say that
- 21:48Speaker 2: are must watch TV. But anytime he comes in the game,
- 21:51Speaker 2: you have to turn on the TV to see what
- 21:53Speaker 2: he's gonna do because there's a chance he has an
- 21:55Speaker 2: emmaculatedning every time he pitches.
- 21:57Speaker 1: I feel like, yeah, sure, sure is tim As you said,
- 22:00Speaker 1: a lot of star power in that lineup, And yeah,
- 22:03Speaker 1: they were playing pretty lousy for several weeks coming into Baltimore.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Maybe they got right at the Oriel's expense. They're probably
- 22:09Speaker 1: going to be around at the end somewhere. I don't
- 22:11Speaker 1: know they're going to catch the Dodgers who could do that,
- 22:13Speaker 1: but they might be around there somewhere.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Well. It's sort of the conversation that we've been having
- 22:19Speaker 3: a lot about some of these Orioles players, like Pete
- 22:22Speaker 3: at the beginning of the year when he was really struggling. Oh,
- 22:24Speaker 3: he's got to figure it out, like he's got that
- 22:26Speaker 3: track record. And Gunner. We still have those conversations. But
- 22:29Speaker 3: you look up and down that lineup and Fernando Tatis
- 22:32Speaker 3: Junior and Jackson Merrill was incredible. Manny Machado is going
- 22:37Speaker 3: to the Hall of Fame at one point, you know,
- 22:38Speaker 3: at some point, like they have so much star power
- 22:42Speaker 3: in that lineup for them entering this series, they were
- 22:46Speaker 3: thirtieth in batting average, thirtieth and on base thirtieth and
- 22:49Speaker 3: slug thirtieth in ops and thirtieth in runs. To have
- 22:54Speaker 3: that much talent and dead last in all of those categories,
- 22:59Speaker 3: it's really mind boggling.
- 23:02Speaker 1: We're not touched on Trevor Rodgers yet. What do you
- 23:05Speaker 1: guys think about him? Today? Was a quality start, two runs,
- 23:08Speaker 1: six innings, bad luck in the opening inning, ball hits
- 23:11Speaker 1: the bag wound up two runs, scoring could have got
- 23:13Speaker 1: out of there with nothing, and you know that was
- 23:16Speaker 1: a difference maker today because this is a close game throughout.
- 23:20Speaker 1: But his final box scored line looked pretty good.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought, I thought he looked really good. I
- 23:25Speaker 2: think I think it's is kind of continuation of putting
- 23:28Speaker 2: good stretches together, and it's it's the same kind of thing.
- 23:31Speaker 2: It's the it's the two outs runs that he's been
- 23:34Speaker 2: given up. I feel like that's the only runs he's
- 23:36Speaker 2: given up his last three or four starts here, and
- 23:38Speaker 2: it's I think he's back to the pitcher that we
- 23:41Speaker 2: have known to come or have come to know over
- 23:44Speaker 2: the last couple of seasons. I really see him turning,
- 23:48Speaker 2: turning it around, and just he's doing a good job.
- 23:50Speaker 2: He's getting ahead of guys, he's he's forcing the recontact.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Today was just kind of bad luck. He hit the bag.
- 23:55Speaker 2: That's an out. You know, that's an out ninety nine
- 23:57Speaker 2: out of one hundred times if it doesn't hit the bag.
- 23:58Speaker 2: So it's it was a fortunate there and really runs
- 24:01Speaker 2: right at premium today. So when the Potters got ahead,
- 24:03Speaker 2: you knew it was gonna be uphill climbing there for
- 24:05Speaker 2: for the Oriols today.
- 24:08Speaker 3: This was his first quality start since his third start
- 24:11Speaker 3: of the year. I think this was probably his best
- 24:14Speaker 3: start since that point. And you can even look now
- 24:18Speaker 3: he's got four starts. Now you go back his last
- 24:20Speaker 3: four three eight six, ERA one one six whip, you
- 24:24Speaker 3: will absolutely take that every single time. And Brad, you
- 24:28Speaker 3: mentioned that I texted you guys in that Seattle game,
- 24:32Speaker 3: the three run homer like that was his only punish.
- 24:34Speaker 3: That was two strikes and two outs. And all of
- 24:37Speaker 3: the hits he gave up in that last start the
- 24:40Speaker 3: Seattle start, six of them, all of them were with
- 24:42Speaker 3: two strikes. So it hasn't been perfect for Trevor, but
- 24:48Speaker 3: you can certainly pick a lot of good out of
- 24:52Speaker 3: these last four starts, and his trajectory is definitely up
- 24:56Speaker 3: right now.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Big West Coast trip coming up for the Orioles. We'll
- 25:00Speaker 1: touch on Rico Garcia and the West Coast trip coming
- 25:04Speaker 1: up on the show.
- 25:07Speaker 5: Big Bad Morning Show, Vinnie and Haney Inside Access Live
- 25:12Speaker 5: on YouTube weekdays six till six, Search Baltimore one O

- 25:18Speaker 5: your phone and never missed what you missed one five
- 25:22Speaker 5: seven The.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Fan, So when your relief pitcher with an O six
- 25:26Speaker 1: a eighty RA, it's gonna be hard to maintain that.
- 25:28Speaker 1: I guess unless your name is Zach Britton, then you
- 25:31Speaker 1: might be able to pull it off. But Rico Garcia
- 25:34Speaker 1: was at six to eighty a couple outings ago, and now,
- 25:37Speaker 1: guys has been scored on after today in three of
- 25:39Speaker 1: his last four games, and in fact, he's given up
- 25:42Speaker 1: three home runs in those four games, when he gave
- 25:45Speaker 1: up one in his first twenty eight games. So whether
- 25:49Speaker 1: it's location or something, I mean, tim, we got a
- 25:52Speaker 1: former major league pitcher on the set here, maybe we
- 25:55Speaker 1: should get his take on he's seeing something different from
- 25:58Speaker 1: Rico Garcia.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I think honestly, I think there's just more of
- 26:03Speaker 2: a book on him. But I don't really see a
- 26:05Speaker 2: ton being different today. His location was definitely off. I
- 26:08Speaker 2: think today was the first time I really know everything
- 26:10Speaker 2: being elevated. No matter what he threw, everything was kind
- 26:13Speaker 2: of middle of the zone to the top of the zone,
- 26:15Speaker 2: whereas before it was middle of the zone to the
- 26:17Speaker 2: bottom of his zone. So I really just think it's
- 26:19Speaker 2: kind of the life of a reliever. You go through
- 26:21Speaker 2: good stretches to go through bad stretches. His good stretch
- 26:24Speaker 2: just happened to be two and a half months. Like
- 26:26Speaker 2: the stretch he went on was unbelievable and it was
- 26:30Speaker 2: really fun to watch it. I think he's just making
- 26:32Speaker 2: you know, he's getting beat on his bad pitches, which
- 26:35Speaker 2: he wasn't getting beat on earlier in the season. I
- 26:37Speaker 2: really think that's the difference. It's kind of just how
- 26:39Speaker 2: it goes. It ebbs and flows as a reliever, and
- 26:42Speaker 2: I was always told that you need to have eight
- 26:44Speaker 2: out of ten scoreless outings, and that's kind of what
- 26:47Speaker 2: your season's going to go. When you give up runs,
- 26:49Speaker 2: hopefully it's a single run and you move on and
- 26:51Speaker 2: you just try to go out there and it's that
- 26:53Speaker 2: was part of the thing I love being a reliever
- 26:55Speaker 2: the most. Was just the challenge of six months of
- 26:58Speaker 2: a season and it's really difficult reliever. You go through
- 27:01Speaker 2: hot stretches that you try to run out as far
- 27:02Speaker 2: as you can. When you give up a run, he
- 27:04Speaker 2: try to go on another stretch and that's really only
- 27:06Speaker 2: he has to do here. I don't see a ton
- 27:08Speaker 2: different in his stuff. It's just going out there and
- 27:10Speaker 2: getting that zero and just kind of rolling with it.
- 27:11Speaker 3: After that, Yeah, I'm not hitting the panic button or
- 27:15Speaker 3: anything with Rico Garcia. I think Kevin Brown and Jim Palmer,
- 27:18Speaker 3: they were both joking about it and they were saying
- 27:21Speaker 3: the same thing you were, Brad, he was missing a
- 27:23Speaker 3: lot of his spots middle, middle, and it was getting hit.
- 27:26Speaker 3: But you know, I think Kevin Brown had the line,
- 27:29Speaker 3: like basically paraphrasing here, this is this is he's normal,
- 27:34Speaker 3: He's human like what he was on such a magic
- 27:36Speaker 3: carpet ride for so so long to begin his season
- 27:40Speaker 3: where he wasn't even giving up hits. You know, in
- 27:43Speaker 3: the first couple months of the season, I think he
- 27:45Speaker 3: only gave up two earned runs, where now three out
- 27:47Speaker 3: of his past four outings he's given up at least
- 27:50Speaker 3: one earned run. But I think this sort of just
- 27:53Speaker 3: points back to the fact Ryan Helsley should be back soon.
- 27:57Speaker 3: You would think he had two scoreless rehab out over
- 28:00Speaker 3: the weekend for Norfolk. I think he had five strikeouts
- 28:03Speaker 3: and two innings pitch. So you add that electric arm
- 28:07Speaker 3: and then it kind of just slots everyone else down
- 28:10Speaker 3: some so that that will be a big, big boost
- 28:12Speaker 3: to the bullpen when Hell's Lea's back.
- 28:15Speaker 1: So Albertaz has pitched Rico earlier in the game here
- 28:19Speaker 1: a couple of times. Recently, we didn't see that a lot.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Now we're seeing more of it. It was a matchups.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Do you think there's shuffling the order is all of
- 28:28Speaker 1: a sudden you have more confidence in Kittridge, Lade or something.
- 28:32Speaker 1: What are you guys seeing.
- 28:34Speaker 2: I kind of think today was to get him back
- 28:36Speaker 2: on track. I think he wanted to sot him against
- 28:38Speaker 2: the bottom of the order just to kind of get
- 28:40Speaker 2: him a clean out, and obviously didn't go that way.
- 28:42Speaker 2: But I've seen managers do that before. I'd been on
- 28:45Speaker 2: teams where they kind of you're scuffling a little bit, Hey,
- 28:48Speaker 2: let's let's get you seven, eight to nine here, as
- 28:49Speaker 2: opposed to having a face in the middle of the
- 28:51Speaker 2: order like you do every other time, just to kind
- 28:53Speaker 2: of get rolling again in the right direction. And I
- 28:56Speaker 2: think it's I think it was just more one of
- 28:58Speaker 2: those things. But like Tim was saying, I think it's
- 29:00Speaker 2: a great time Helsley's almost hopefully back for this bullpen
- 29:03Speaker 2: to just kind of slide everybody down. It's really hard
- 29:06Speaker 2: to close in the major leagues, and I felt like
- 29:08Speaker 2: I was a pretty good seventh and eighth inning guy.
- 29:11Speaker 2: When I got to the ninth inning, it was it's
- 29:13Speaker 2: just a different animal and it's a tough thing to
- 29:15Speaker 2: do for a long time. It gave me so much
- 29:17Speaker 2: respect for anybody who had to close games and was
- 29:19Speaker 2: able to do it for a long time, because it's
- 29:22Speaker 2: really difficult. That ninth inning guys just change everything they do.
- 29:25Speaker 2: They're willing to get a hit, they're willing to hit
- 29:27Speaker 2: the ball the other way. And Rica Garcia did a
- 29:29Speaker 2: great job at it for a little bit, and I
- 29:31Speaker 2: feel like it just kind of can catch up to
- 29:33Speaker 2: you where the stress can kind of mount and the
- 29:35Speaker 2: pressure kind of gets a little bit too much, and
- 29:38Speaker 2: then you have a couple of bad outings and then
- 29:40Speaker 2: it just kind of like bleeds into other things. So
- 29:42Speaker 2: I think today it was trying to get him out there,
- 29:45Speaker 2: get a clean inning, and just kind of get rolling
- 29:47Speaker 2: in the right direction.
- 29:48Speaker 3: It is really interesting seeing that, Brad, because you can
- 29:52Speaker 3: have fantastic, you know, all star caliber relievers that maybe
- 29:57Speaker 3: struggle with that ninth inning. And I've I always wonder
- 30:00Speaker 3: that is it the moment? Is it kind of like
- 30:02Speaker 3: what you were saying that the hitters just with a
- 30:05Speaker 3: different approach, knowing the games on the line and all
- 30:07Speaker 3: of the above.
- 30:09Speaker 2: I thought in the al Least, in particular, guys were
- 30:13Speaker 2: trying to hit their home run to the eighth inning.
- 30:15Speaker 2: When they got to the ninth inning, they've picked their spots,
- 30:18Speaker 2: but they were willing to change their approach just a
- 30:21Speaker 2: little bit. And for me, I love pitching the home
- 30:24Speaker 2: run hitters because I always felt like I with my
- 30:26Speaker 2: change up especially, I felt like I was not going
- 30:28Speaker 2: to give up a home run on that pitch. So
- 30:30Speaker 2: for me it was an advantage. And then when I
- 30:31Speaker 2: got to the ninth inning, I'm starting to throw these
- 30:33Speaker 2: change ups, lefties are hitting ball the other way. Ready's
- 30:36Speaker 2: are willing to, you know, hit the fastball to right field,
- 30:39Speaker 2: where before they're trying to hit you six timesred feet
- 30:41Speaker 2: to left center. So it was I think, in particular
- 30:44Speaker 2: in the Division especially, guys were willing to not try
- 30:48Speaker 2: to hit the home run of the ninth inning, and
- 30:50Speaker 2: it just makes it more difficult when I I had
- 30:52Speaker 2: were stats against in the nl WES and I did
- 30:54Speaker 2: the al Least, and that makes no sense. There was
- 30:56Speaker 2: a shortstop, usually lighter hitting shortstop hitting eighth with the
- 31:00Speaker 2: pitcher hitting ninth, and my number was probably three runs
- 31:03Speaker 2: higher in the n West, and it was al least
- 31:05Speaker 2: Maybe I just like pitching against guys. I like to
- 31:07Speaker 2: go home, try it a home run every time. I
- 31:08Speaker 2: don't know, but for some reason the ninth think it
- 31:10Speaker 2: just kind of felt like they were willing to take
- 31:12Speaker 2: their single, take their walk, and kind of just keep
- 31:14Speaker 2: the bus rolling in the right direction.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I think the oil bullpen could really become a weapon
- 31:20Speaker 1: if they get ellslie Back throwing like he was cano.
- 31:24Speaker 1: We didn't even mentioned him through some unbelievable splits in
- 31:27Speaker 1: recent outings. This splitter is just devastating, like in his
- 31:31Speaker 1: peak performance from earlier. You know, get those guys going.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Kittridge looks like he might be turning a corner. Got
- 31:38Speaker 1: to save the other night. Then you have Rico and Nuniezo,
- 31:41Speaker 1: by the way, the guys who are carrying them for
- 31:43Speaker 1: much of the year. That's five guys not even mentioning
- 31:46Speaker 1: some of the lefties that can help this bullpen. So
- 31:49Speaker 1: it could better days could be ahead here for the Oriels.
- 31:52Speaker 1: What's ahead is the West Coast trip. Three at Seattle,
- 31:55Speaker 1: three at the Dodgers, three at the Angels, it'll be
- 31:57Speaker 1: a long trip and we'll be here throughout it to
- 32:00Speaker 1: detail it for you, so be tuned in for that.
