- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast, and today we
- 0:07Speaker 1: have a legendary guest at twenty nineteen Pro Football Hall
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Fame inductee, one of the most dynamic and dominant
- 0:14Speaker 1: football players to ever play in the National Football League.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Fifteen seasons of domination at the cornerback position, twelve Pro Bowlers,
- 0:24Speaker 1: twelve Pro Bowls, seven All Pros, and a member of
- 0:28Speaker 1: the two thousands All Decade Team champ. Appreciate you joining me, brother.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Hey Man. Good to be in the presence of greatness. Man,
- 0:35Speaker 2: how you doing.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm great, I'm great. I'm great. I got you on
- 0:39Speaker 1: the show. I'm feeling good. It's a beautiful day for me,
- 0:43Speaker 1: so much great football to talk about.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Well, let's get to it, man.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Let's get to it. So we'll start it. We'll start
- 0:50Speaker 1: it with what was your welcome to the league? Bumbit?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Because I think people forget, you know, as great as
- 0:56Speaker 1: you are and as great as players are, everybody has
- 0:59Speaker 1: them that introduced him to the National Football League, where
- 1:02Speaker 1: you're like, oh, okay, they're real out here. You know.
- 1:06Speaker 3: The older I get, the more it becomes a season
- 1:08Speaker 3: instead of just one moment. It was more like Okay,
- 1:11Speaker 3: my whole rookie season. If I look at that body
- 1:13Speaker 3: of work and who I had to deal with, I
- 1:18Speaker 3: had to deal with some dogs. First game in my career,
- 1:22Speaker 3: Michael Irvin got it. Now, I haven't done anything in
- 1:26Speaker 3: the league at this point. Dal Green was the man
- 1:29Speaker 3: you know, on the Redskins at the time, and they
- 1:32Speaker 3: gave me the assignment, and I'm like, damn, okay. And
- 1:35Speaker 3: it was more about our size, right, I was bigger,
- 1:37Speaker 3: he was bigger. And now, look, Michael Irvin would do
- 1:42Speaker 3: this thing. Now he was good, really good. But now
- 1:45Speaker 3: if you know, he wasn't that fast, but he was
- 1:47Speaker 3: deceptive and he was strong, great blocker. And speaking of blocking,
- 1:54Speaker 3: he would do this thing where he would come off
- 1:56Speaker 3: the ball and just head butt you. So I think
- 2:00Speaker 3: back then, I'm seeing stars that ain't no concussion. You know,
- 2:04Speaker 3: that's just part of the game. So I had to
- 2:06Speaker 3: deal with that. So that was a welcome to the
- 2:10Speaker 3: league moment. Later in that year, I had Eric Moles.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Now a lot of people forget about Eric Moles, but
- 2:17Speaker 3: I always have to remind people, Man, this dude was
- 2:19Speaker 3: a straight dog country boy, stronger than odds, and I'll
- 2:24Speaker 3: never forget I don't know if he was mad at
- 2:26Speaker 3: me or what, but I locked up with him on
- 2:30Speaker 3: a run.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Play man.
- 2:31Speaker 3: That dude had me over that past the gatorade, like
- 2:34Speaker 3: I no, and I never The main thing I remember
- 2:39Speaker 3: about it is I tweaked my shoulder and that's really
- 2:42Speaker 3: what made me kind of go limp, and he just
- 2:43Speaker 3: took advantage of it. But man, my shoulder has not
- 2:47Speaker 3: been the same since. You gonna think that's rookie year.
- 2:52Speaker 3: And there was another moment earlier in the year where
- 2:57Speaker 3: I chased down somebody on a damn kick off return.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna kick off. I chased somebody down and then
- 3:03Speaker 2: we're we're at the Meadowlands.
- 3:06Speaker 3: And this was when they had that astral turf like
- 3:08Speaker 3: that that carpet and I and I stripped the ball,
- 3:12Speaker 3: Paul popped out. I stuck my other arm on his
- 3:16Speaker 3: waisted tackling, and boy, I drugged my arm on that turf,
- 3:20Speaker 3: and I just had rug burns like and you already know, man,
- 3:24Speaker 3: And it was in my like in my elbow, like
- 3:27Speaker 3: it was all in here. So every time I stretch
- 3:29Speaker 3: it out, oh my god. It was the worst. But anyway, man,
- 3:33Speaker 3: it's always a collection of moments, you know, I got
- 3:36Speaker 3: I gotta say I thought I was somebody, and then
- 3:40Speaker 3: you hit that rookie wall, and then you know, we
- 3:43Speaker 3: went on this little playoff. Well, we went on this
- 3:44Speaker 3: run to get in the playoffs, and we won our
- 3:47Speaker 3: division last game of the year against the forty nine ers. Man,
- 3:50Speaker 3: it was that was the only time I went to
- 3:52Speaker 3: the playoffs as a Redskin. But I'll never forget it
- 3:55Speaker 3: because it was an up and down season. Man, So
- 3:58Speaker 3: them boys taught me some lessons.
- 3:59Speaker 1: That right, That's that's exactly how rookie years go. I
- 4:04Speaker 1: remember I didn't start until the sixth game of the season,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and it was really because everybody else got hurt. It
- 4:09Speaker 1: wasn't because you know, I was I was a fifth
- 4:11Speaker 1: round draft pick, and everybody in front of me just
- 4:13Speaker 1: went down, dropped back flies, paying bang bang, And they
- 4:16Speaker 1: threw me in there against Cleveland and I'm wet behind
- 4:19Speaker 1: the ears. I'm just out there like hey, I'm pressing,
- 4:21Speaker 1: putting my hands on everybody, and I'm just gonna survive
- 4:23Speaker 1: and tackle everything moving. And I just remember, like even
- 4:29Speaker 1: the guys you don't even think about, like the fans,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I can't say we don't think I was good because
- 4:33Speaker 1: everybody in the National Football League is good, but the
- 4:35Speaker 1: fans don't think about as like, oh man, this guy's
- 4:38Speaker 1: gonna be a problem or problems like just because you
- 4:41Speaker 1: don't know them as big names, household names. Every receiver
- 4:44Speaker 1: in the National Football League has something dynamic about them.
- 4:46Speaker 1: There's something, there's a reason there there, and there's something
- 4:49Speaker 1: that's gonna give you trumple So my rookie year, I
- 4:51Speaker 1: just remember having so much respect for everybody at the
- 4:54Speaker 1: end of the season because I was.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Like everyone, Oh yeah, everybody's good.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Everybody's good.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Yeah, got it that you see on tape blocking all
- 5:02Speaker 3: the time. He wrote you up. They give him something.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Don't sleep but you can't sleep on anybody.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Nobody, nobody. But but like we were talking about earlier,
- 5:13Speaker 1: the game has so so evolved so much. Who's your
- 5:17Speaker 1: favorite dB in the league right now? Obviously you watching
- 5:20Speaker 1: pretty closely, and certain Is is still the top of
- 5:23Speaker 1: the class. I mean, Christian Gonzales put on the show
- 5:25Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl.
- 5:26Speaker 3: But those are the two right there, right and certain Is,
- 5:30Speaker 3: you know, hands down the best.
- 5:32Speaker 2: He's it's really his body of work.
- 5:34Speaker 3: You know, he's obviously good right now, but he's done
- 5:37Speaker 3: it for four or five years now, so to see
- 5:39Speaker 3: him be so consistent, and I mean, it's been amazing
- 5:43Speaker 3: to watch because I never see him. I never see
- 5:47Speaker 3: him get really tricked or just dominated like nobody's just
- 5:51Speaker 3: like we all had our moments with guys are just
- 5:53Speaker 3: catching the ball. You're like, yeah, dang, Like what am
- 5:55Speaker 3: I doing this dude? He really he really handles his
- 6:00Speaker 3: own on a consistent basis. And you mentioned Christian Gonzales. Yeah,
- 6:05Speaker 3: he popped up on my radar. I was when he
- 6:07Speaker 3: went to the Patriots. When he got drafted. I was like, Okay,
- 6:10Speaker 3: I don't really know this guy, but I like his side.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I like the way he moves, you know. Then he
- 6:15Speaker 3: had his rookie season and then they made this playoff
- 6:18Speaker 3: run and I really got to watch him. I'm like, Okay,
- 6:21Speaker 3: this kid could play, and I just like the fact
- 6:23Speaker 3: that he makes plays. But he's hungry enough to want
- 6:27Speaker 3: to match up and do all these other things that
- 6:30Speaker 3: they asked these high profile corners to do. And you know,
- 6:33Speaker 3: he's on my radar for sure now. And there's other
- 6:36Speaker 3: cats I like. I like my guy, Denzel Ward, like
- 6:41Speaker 3: he consistent, been doing it for a while. Aj Terrell,
- 6:45Speaker 3: I'm here in Atlanta, so I get to see him
- 6:46Speaker 3: a lot. So these dudes here, they're fighters. To me,
- 6:50Speaker 3: like they're not the biggest, but I mean they play
- 6:53Speaker 3: with the biggest and I love their game.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I love to watch them.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it's fun. It's been so much kind conversation about
- 7:00Speaker 1: the shadowing, the receiver and following and all that, and
- 7:04Speaker 1: I remember it was. It was big and prevalent during
- 7:06Speaker 1: that time I played, and people didn't try to give
- 7:08Speaker 1: me my just due because they're like, oh, you didn't
- 7:10Speaker 1: follow everybody, you didn't do this. And I'm like, bro,
- 7:12Speaker 1: I do what the coach tell me to do. If
- 7:14Speaker 1: you tell me to go get him, that's who I
- 7:15Speaker 1: go get. They tell me that way, it's covered, that's
- 7:17Speaker 1: what I play. I go to the coordinator to be like, hey,
- 7:19Speaker 1: can we play Man every place? Or they'll stop talking.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Guess what, he don't do.
- 7:23Speaker 3: It, you know, you know, And I was one of
- 7:26Speaker 3: those guys like I was like, damn, I wish you
- 7:28Speaker 3: would match up.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I wish they would let him match up.
- 7:31Speaker 3: You know, that's way because because to me, matching up
- 7:33Speaker 3: exposes you in different ways, like you can't just be
- 7:36Speaker 3: one thing. So it gives you the opportunity to display
- 7:39Speaker 3: your talents. And I never forget you matched up on
- 7:42Speaker 3: Antonio Brown one game and.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I was like, Okay, this is it.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And for some reason, I'm watching this game, like by
- 7:49Speaker 3: the time I retired, you know, I catch games here
- 7:51Speaker 3: and there, you know, but I watched that game and
- 7:54Speaker 3: I was like, oh man, And I knew Antonio Brown
- 7:57Speaker 3: has issues with long corners, so so for me, I
- 8:00Speaker 3: was like, this's gonna be a challenge for him, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 3: just once I noticed it and you held your own,
- 8:05Speaker 3: and you know, you got to think that dude was
- 8:06Speaker 3: on top of his.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Game that I think he had eighteen nineteen hundred that year.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Oh yeah, he was. He was doing it.
- 8:13Speaker 3: So every week you see that, you expect that to
- 8:15Speaker 3: happen against you.
- 8:17Speaker 2: You held it down. I give you a lot of
- 8:19Speaker 2: props for that one.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I appreciate that. But that was the thing about the
- 8:24Speaker 1: whole deal, because when you played, they would let you
- 8:27Speaker 1: guys do it, but the fans think, oh man, you
- 8:29Speaker 1: following You guys just run cover one the whole time.
- 8:31Speaker 1: It's like, nobody play cover one when they call it.
- 8:34Speaker 1: But you don't just play man, just because I travel
- 8:36Speaker 1: over there with you, No mean I'm in man to
- 8:37Speaker 1: man and at times it's it's a coverage identifier. It
- 8:42Speaker 1: exposes a defense if we do. Every time I move
- 8:44Speaker 1: around with him, we and man and I'm just giving
- 8:47Speaker 1: us away.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yes, And that's what I'm saying about.
- 8:50Speaker 3: How you can, you know, show how versatile you are,
- 8:53Speaker 3: because you can't just play one side match up with
- 8:57Speaker 3: somebody and not know how to play inside. Like you
- 9:00Speaker 3: got to know everything. And that's one thing I always
- 9:03Speaker 3: prided myself on. I want to know every position in
- 9:06Speaker 3: this room because if my guy goes over here and
- 9:09Speaker 3: I'm inside, I want to know what the nickel has
- 9:11Speaker 3: to do because I know we can't play man the
- 9:13Speaker 3: whole time. So if that's going to discourage you from
- 9:17Speaker 3: calling a zone play when I'm inside, then that's don't
- 9:21Speaker 3: mess up the whole game plan. So I gotta be versatile.
- 9:24Speaker 3: And I was just lucky enough that I always played
- 9:26Speaker 3: with coaches that allowed me to do it. I mean,
- 9:29Speaker 3: there was a few I had to kind of talk
- 9:31Speaker 3: into it right. Other than that, I mean, but I
- 9:34Speaker 3: had established my reputation at that time. But I came
- 9:36Speaker 3: out the gate Michael Irving buddy, Like, Okay, I just
- 9:41Speaker 3: took that challenge, man.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Right, I took it every time they called on it.
- 9:45Speaker 1: You know, there was a couple of times they called
- 9:47Speaker 1: me to do it with Julio Ajay. Yeah, Antonio. They
- 9:52Speaker 1: a lot of times in twenty thirteen, the year we
- 9:54Speaker 1: went to the Super Bowl. They would call it for
- 9:56Speaker 1: specific games, like we had An Kwan one year, and
- 9:59Speaker 1: it just made sense, like I'm I'm following a Quan,
- 10:01Speaker 1: I'm in the slide, I'm outside third down. They going
- 10:03Speaker 1: to him. That's where I'm gonna be Like me and
- 10:05Speaker 1: a Kuan. Let's let's let's dance. And Kuan was one
- 10:09Speaker 1: of the ones too that nobody gives no credit to.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I'm a straight, straight dog. Yeah.
- 10:15Speaker 3: I never had to deal with him much because when
- 10:17Speaker 3: he was in Arizona, I would I was on Fit Salot.
- 10:22Speaker 2: And yeah, right, another dog.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And then you know, when he got to Baltimore, they
- 10:28Speaker 3: put me on the speedier guy and Kuan, and I
- 10:31Speaker 3: think Chris Harris had him. I mean, this is the
- 10:33Speaker 3: back end of my career, but you know, he man,
- 10:36Speaker 3: that dude. Just watching him in college and all the
- 10:39Speaker 3: shit he did because he played against my brother, and
- 10:42Speaker 3: I think it was a sugar Bowl man. He just
- 10:45Speaker 3: dude was doing everything for Florida State. So when he
- 10:47Speaker 3: got to the league, I was really anxious to see
- 10:49Speaker 3: how they used him and or they did not disappoint
- 10:51Speaker 3: that dude was a straight dog man.
- 10:54Speaker 1: He was tough to deal, super strong. You talk about
- 10:57Speaker 1: the head butt release and all that. He was all
- 10:59Speaker 1: that and mean and mean. You know, some dudes out
- 11:02Speaker 1: there just seemed like they just got an attitude the
- 11:04Speaker 1: whole game. And you're like, hey, bro, I don't know
- 11:06Speaker 1: who did something to you, but hey, you ain't I'm
- 11:08Speaker 1: one of them. You ain't about to You ain't about
- 11:10Speaker 1: to be bullying me out here. I heard my hands
- 11:13Speaker 1: on you. But I had to deal with fits all
- 11:16Speaker 1: the time because he was in our division. So boy,
- 11:18Speaker 1: you talk about hard lessons my rookie year, I'll never forget.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I never forget Larry Fitzgerald. I'm pressed up. I'm like this,
- 11:26Speaker 1: Larry Fitzgerald, like, I'm about to make Mike a name
- 11:28Speaker 1: for myself. Last game of the season, I got him.
- 11:31Speaker 1: They threw one up. I almost picked it. I'm like, oh,
- 11:34Speaker 1: I'm strapping. And they always had him in this like
- 11:37Speaker 1: motion cut split like allowing him to be free. So
- 11:40Speaker 1: they forced you to back off. And that's how they
- 11:42Speaker 1: got me off of him. Boy, They backed me off.
- 11:45Speaker 1: That boy ran that spray release post got me one
- 11:50Speaker 1: hand over the middle, like I said, who, this boy's nasty.
- 11:55Speaker 1: And then I pressed him. Later in the game, we're
- 11:57Speaker 1: in ot and I'm pressing him and he the back
- 12:00Speaker 1: of my helmet like and then hook the back of
- 12:03Speaker 1: my helmet. Boy, And next thing you know, I'm chasing
- 12:06Speaker 1: elbows and said.
- 12:09Speaker 2: So so he got balue.
- 12:10Speaker 3: So he did that to me, they call OPI on
- 12:13Speaker 3: his ass's.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Because you was a legend. I was a philth Browner.
- 12:18Speaker 3: See what I would do though, I would go tell
- 12:20Speaker 3: the refs, like if I see stuff on film, I
- 12:22Speaker 3: go to the field judge and the back judge. I'm like, look,
- 12:25Speaker 3: this dude does this, this and this, Like you're gonna
- 12:28Speaker 3: think I'm holding him off the line, but he's grabbing
- 12:30Speaker 3: me first. I'm just trying to move my feet. Now
- 12:32Speaker 3: if I let him go, now, he's just gonna run
- 12:34Speaker 3: right by me. So I can't let him go. Damn,
- 12:37Speaker 3: he didn't throw that flag in the game. I'm telling you,
- 12:39Speaker 3: those little conversations used to help me every now and again,
- 12:42Speaker 3: so it was necessary.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I was telling I was telling Terry on Arnold Insertain
- 12:47Speaker 1: because they do this podcast together. Oh yeah, and I
- 12:49Speaker 1: was telling them boys, I said, get to know them refs,
- 12:52Speaker 1: them side judges in the back. Just know their name.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Just know their name. That'll go a long way in
- 12:58Speaker 1: these games.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Yeah, hey, John has a family. I mean whatever, Bro,
- 13:04Speaker 3: it's the relationships matter. I don't care where you are
- 13:07Speaker 3: in life.
- 13:09Speaker 1: I don't exactly I feel the same way. I feel
- 13:11Speaker 1: the same way. I wanted to talk about this because
- 13:14Speaker 1: you said so much of the game about the game,
- 13:16Speaker 1: and you mean so much to this game, and you're
- 13:19Speaker 1: such a legend, your your voice has such impact. Now
- 13:22Speaker 1: you said, at times, you feel like this game is
- 13:24Speaker 1: fixed by these refs and the things they do in
- 13:26Speaker 1: the flags. And sometimes the fans take that and they're like, yeah,
- 13:29Speaker 1: see I told you it's fixed, and it's like he
- 13:32Speaker 1: didn't mean it like that what And I want to
- 13:34Speaker 1: let you clarify it. But as somebody who played the game,
- 13:37Speaker 1: the only people who can affect the game in that
- 13:39Speaker 1: way or the rest like people are like the players,
- 13:42Speaker 1: like it ain't no players in this game, fixing his game.
- 13:44Speaker 3: No.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Never, it's impossible. It be damned too hard. You be
- 13:49Speaker 1: sitting your ass on a bench before you know it.
- 13:52Speaker 1: But if every time an offense has a big player
- 13:55Speaker 1: ref throws a flag, you can have a tremendous impact
- 13:58Speaker 1: on that game. It only takes two three sixty yard
- 14:02Speaker 1: touchdowns coming back that Hey might not score again.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, here's the thing.
- 14:09Speaker 3: I don't think there's some conspiracy or anything going on,
- 14:13Speaker 3: but that you know, the rests do affect the game.
- 14:16Speaker 2: I mean, one way or the other.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Now, I gotta tell you, since I've been retired, you know,
- 14:22Speaker 3: the more I have to convince people like, nah, it's
- 14:24Speaker 3: not fixed.
- 14:25Speaker 2: It's not fixed.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Now you see things happen and you wonder, but again,
- 14:31Speaker 3: like ref's are human, They're gonna make mistakes, they're not
- 14:34Speaker 3: gonna get it.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Right all the time.
- 14:36Speaker 3: I just always felt like there needs to be more
- 14:38Speaker 3: attention on the development of refs. And you know, even
- 14:43Speaker 3: some guys I know that play that are refing now
- 14:46Speaker 3: and it's funny watching them out there because I know
- 14:48Speaker 3: how they used to feel about the refs. I'm not
- 14:50Speaker 3: gonna name them, but but but you know, it was
- 14:54Speaker 3: always interesting.
- 14:55Speaker 2: You know who the refs are.
- 14:57Speaker 3: But I always made it a point, like I said,
- 15:00Speaker 3: to talk to the refs and build a relationship with
- 15:02Speaker 3: them because they are the judges. It's no different if
- 15:05Speaker 3: you in the courtroom who's making the decision to hit
- 15:08Speaker 3: them the person right in front of you, like, okay,
- 15:10Speaker 3: you better like you on some level in order to
- 15:13Speaker 3: get some calls to go to your way.
- 15:15Speaker 2: That was always the case.
- 15:17Speaker 3: I mean, it's you see it in basketball more than anything, right,
- 15:19Speaker 3: the superstar is gonna get the calls.
- 15:21Speaker 2: So it is what it is, and that comes with
- 15:24Speaker 2: anything you do in life.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Man. People are always gonna favor the ones that they've
- 15:28Speaker 3: seen do it over and over again.
- 15:30Speaker 2: That's just that's just how it is now.
- 15:32Speaker 3: I don't if I said that. I don't remember saying
- 15:36Speaker 3: that the game is fixed or the refs are fixing
- 15:39Speaker 3: the game.
- 15:39Speaker 2: I don't know. Maybe you didn't say it like that.
- 15:42Speaker 1: It was just it was just you were just like
- 15:44Speaker 1: I could see how people would feel that way.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Absolutely, I could get that, of course, especially when you're
- 15:50Speaker 3: on the losing it, you know. And I try to
- 15:52Speaker 3: be objective about what I see regardless because I'm a
- 15:55Speaker 3: big dog fan. Now there's no team I root for
- 15:59Speaker 3: harder than my bulldog. So whenever we have is I'm
- 16:03Speaker 3: sitting there yelling at the rest just like everybody else.
- 16:05Speaker 3: I'm sitting there saying, oh man, they must be for
- 16:07Speaker 3: Mississippi because old miss One.
- 16:09Speaker 1: You know.
- 16:09Speaker 2: So I'm the same way.
- 16:11Speaker 3: But then I, you know, I calm down, and I
- 16:13Speaker 3: you know, I get real with myself and just realized
- 16:15Speaker 3: we didn't play well enough.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Right right now? You set the standard for cornerbacks. I mean,
- 16:21Speaker 1: you got twelve Pro Bowls to your name, the most
- 16:23Speaker 1: of any corner corner in the National Football League's history.
- 16:26Speaker 1: You got two hundred and three PBUs during your Hall
- 16:30Speaker 1: of Fame career. Looking back, what do you think really
- 16:32Speaker 1: set you apart from everybody else?
- 16:36Speaker 3: Practice? You know, it's funny, like the two oh three breakups.
- 16:42Speaker 3: I mean, it's one of those things I'm really proud
- 16:44Speaker 3: about because it lets people know, like how many times
- 16:47Speaker 3: I got my hands on the ball right. But it
- 16:50Speaker 3: was the way I practiced, and it was it was nothing.
- 16:53Speaker 3: It was something that I thought about my first two years.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Or even worried about. It was just what I did.
- 17:00Speaker 3: And then I never forget Marty Schottenhammer was like, man,
- 17:04Speaker 3: I've never seen a guy get his hands on so
- 17:07Speaker 3: many balls in practice. And I'm like, just out here
- 17:12Speaker 3: doing what I do, like I'm still young. I'm twenty
- 17:14Speaker 3: three years old. I don't I mean, I don't know
- 17:16Speaker 3: what I'm doing. I'm just out here playing. This is
- 17:18Speaker 3: what I've been doing since I was eight years old.
- 17:21Speaker 3: This is this is who I am. But then when
- 17:23Speaker 3: I got to Denver and Mike Shanahan, I never forget.
- 17:28Speaker 3: I dislocated my shoulder my second year there, and Mike
- 17:31Speaker 3: Shanahan took some film and was just showing the team
- 17:36Speaker 3: because I came back to practice that Thursday. I didn't
- 17:39Speaker 3: miss I think I missed the Wednesday practice. Came back
- 17:41Speaker 3: Thursday and I was practicing out there with a harness on.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I ain't missed no.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Time, like because at that point in my career, I
- 17:47Speaker 3: hadn't missed a game, like I had missed no game
- 17:51Speaker 3: into my sixth season. And I came out there and
- 17:54Speaker 3: I got this thing on my arm and I'm practicing
- 17:56Speaker 3: hard and diving on the ground and breaking up balls.
- 17:58Speaker 3: And he took that film and showed the team and
- 18:01Speaker 3: he was like, this is how you practice, and that's
- 18:03Speaker 3: when it really like clicked, like.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Damn.
- 18:06Speaker 3: You know, I'm glad that I'm the guy that he's
- 18:10Speaker 3: pointing out. But I just never realized like how important
- 18:13Speaker 3: it was to be a great practice player. So I
- 18:16Speaker 3: always prided myself on making sure that I set the
- 18:19Speaker 3: example by what I did, right, I'm a leader at
- 18:22Speaker 3: this point, so the way you practice rubs off on people.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Here the question and to me, to be honest, Once
- 18:29Speaker 3: I got later in my career and the bumps and
- 18:31Speaker 3: bruises started catching up, and I wasn't able to practice,
- 18:34Speaker 3: my play decline, So now I'm not as good and
- 18:38Speaker 3: I contribute to all that, you know, decline to practice,
- 18:41Speaker 3: and obviously father time a little bit, but I wasn't
- 18:44Speaker 3: able to continue working at a high level in order
- 18:47Speaker 3: to stay sharp, you know, and get my skills and
- 18:51Speaker 3: make sure I'm prepared every week. Man, I would take
- 18:54Speaker 3: Wednesdays off, I mean because I was hurting. I was tired.
- 18:57Speaker 3: So that's really what forces a lot of guys the game.
- 19:00Speaker 3: And I just saw one of my favorite slaver tire
- 19:03Speaker 3: and then I'm like, damn boy, and Father Tom is undefeated.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Because he was in the of his game two years ago.
- 19:09Speaker 3: All right, So now you start seeing moves on the
- 19:11Speaker 3: Pittsburgh and then you just, man, look, it's nothing that
- 19:15Speaker 3: you could do about that. That clock ticking. It ain't
- 19:18Speaker 3: never stopping for nobody, nobody.
- 19:21Speaker 1: And that's such a great point because I think that's
- 19:23Speaker 1: lost on so many people in this nil era and
- 19:27Speaker 1: it's highlight and clip era is just consistency at practice.
- 19:31Speaker 1: I think that was what gave me the most confidence
- 19:34Speaker 1: when I was playing. It's I practiced really hard. I
- 19:37Speaker 1: knew what was coming, I knew what I would see,
- 19:39Speaker 1: I knew how my body will react. And then I
- 19:41Speaker 1: go into the game and I feel good. I'm like, hey,
- 19:43Speaker 1: I know I practiced and gave myself the best possible
- 19:46Speaker 1: chance I could go out here and let it hang.
- 19:48Speaker 1: But when you don't practice, I remember, I had a
- 19:49Speaker 1: couple of weeks where I got nick and you're like,
- 19:52Speaker 1: I don't feel as good today because I didn't go
- 19:54Speaker 1: out there and put my body through it and know that, hey,
- 19:57Speaker 1: I'm ready for this moment. I do this. I earned
- 19:59Speaker 1: the right to play the way I want to play,
- 20:01Speaker 1: and still I put up. I still played pretty well.
- 20:04Speaker 1: But as you said later in your career. The less
- 20:06Speaker 1: you practice unless you feel good, the more your game
- 20:08Speaker 1: feels like it's starting to slip.
- 20:12Speaker 2: It's inevitable, bro, It's inevitable.
- 20:15Speaker 1: It is. It is the game. The game is evolving
- 20:17Speaker 1: so much. And I remember watching you and and and
- 20:22Speaker 1: Dion and Charles and and all the great dbs that
- 20:26Speaker 1: came before, and watching y'all study the game and manipulate
- 20:30Speaker 1: the game and bake quarterbacks and take the football away
- 20:33Speaker 1: and the way that y'all did, And I remember like, oh, man,
- 20:36Speaker 1: I can't wait to get to the league and study.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I took so many nuggets from the things you guys
- 20:40Speaker 1: said in interviews and the things you guys did on
- 20:42Speaker 1: the field and the things you the way you played,
- 20:45Speaker 1: and I tried to put them into my game. But
- 20:48Speaker 1: then the game changed. Then the game changed. Then they
- 20:51Speaker 1: now they're protecting quarterbacks. Now, quarterbacks aren't aren't putting the
- 20:54Speaker 1: football up the way they used to. Now the routes
- 20:56Speaker 1: aren't the same. Now the game has evolved so much.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Talk about the game and how you see it now
- 21:01Speaker 1: compared to when you play.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, like I said, man, the quarterbacks are a
- 21:06Speaker 3: lot smarter.
- 21:07Speaker 2: They are highly protected.
- 21:09Speaker 3: I mean that is the prize on the field, so
- 21:12Speaker 3: to speak, Like, yeah, they have their moments when they're
- 21:15Speaker 3: not playing great, but quarterbacks quickly fix those issues. Now
- 21:20Speaker 3: I can contribute a lot of things to them understanding
- 21:24Speaker 3: the game better a lot sooner, you know, there's more information.
- 21:28Speaker 2: You know, there's.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Quarterbacks playing seven on seven at eight nine years old,
- 21:33Speaker 3: Like nobody really knew like who the quarterbacks.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Were when we were growing up.
- 21:36Speaker 3: It was more yeah he could sling it, but you
- 21:39Speaker 3: don't really notice that till like high school. Right then
- 21:42Speaker 3: you start, you know, people start watching you and now
- 21:45Speaker 3: you're developing. Man, they got quarterback coaches coming out the womb.
- 21:48Speaker 3: So it's one of those things. But you know, I
- 21:53Speaker 3: think the reason, you know, we made so many plays
- 21:58Speaker 3: back in the day compared to now is I just
- 22:01Speaker 3: feel like we had more versatility And it wasn't just
- 22:05Speaker 3: me myself, Charles Woodson, the bigger names.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I mean, you can think of a lot of guys that.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Are aren't in the Hall of Fame that used to
- 22:11Speaker 3: make play dre BLYI I mean Aaron Glenn, I mean
- 22:15Speaker 3: t Buck, Like these dudes were ballers, made a lot
- 22:20Speaker 3: of plays, right because I feel like they were more
- 22:25Speaker 3: rail rounded athletes as well, as the game was a
- 22:28Speaker 3: little different. You know, quarterbacks, you know, were running play action.
- 22:31Speaker 3: They trying to get the ball down the field. We're
- 22:33Speaker 3: picking it off quick game. It was easier to see.
- 22:36Speaker 3: So the game is a little more complex, was a
- 22:38Speaker 3: little more complex. It's a little more complex now than
- 22:41Speaker 3: it was back then. But I feel like the athletes
- 22:44Speaker 3: that played corner, like I didn't play corner until really
- 22:47Speaker 3: til I got to college. I didn't play corner until
- 22:51Speaker 3: I got to college. Even then, I didn't have a
- 22:54Speaker 3: coach teaching me technique. It was a technique that he
- 22:57Speaker 3: wanted for that defense, but it didn't translate to the NFL. Yeah,
- 23:00Speaker 3: I learned corner by that by sitting under Dale Green
- 23:03Speaker 3: and having him pulled me to the side. That's who
- 23:05Speaker 3: taught me really how to play corner. And you got
- 23:09Speaker 3: to think we had balls skills. I was playing offense.
- 23:12Speaker 3: I mean, Dia same thing. He played quarterback in high school,
- 23:14Speaker 3: and so did I. Dale Green just well rounded track athlete,
- 23:18Speaker 3: just one of those. Like so when you think about
- 23:21Speaker 3: all the different, you know, athletes that played corner, we
- 23:24Speaker 3: all did something else before we ever got outside the numbers,
- 23:28Speaker 3: Like it was just I felt like when you pull
- 23:31Speaker 3: that out, like when guys just start because all these corners,
- 23:34Speaker 3: like my son just went to this under armour camp
- 23:37Speaker 3: the other day. All these dudes been specializing in corner
- 23:41Speaker 3: since probably middle school, and I'm like, well, you can't
- 23:44Speaker 3: just be that, like, continue to work on your hands,
- 23:48Speaker 3: continue to understand the game from both sides, like, don't
- 23:50Speaker 3: just be one dimensional. So I often feel the game
- 23:54Speaker 3: has changed, but also the way corners approach the game
- 23:57Speaker 3: has changed as well.
- 24:00Speaker 1: I can agree with that. I think that was one
- 24:01Speaker 1: of my biggest assets, is playing receiver and recognizing and
- 24:05Speaker 1: understanding the route concepts, the combinations, knowing the West Coast
- 24:11Speaker 1: and how it's like foundationally, like what the what the
- 24:14Speaker 1: offense is thinking in these situations third and five, Hey
- 24:17Speaker 1: and a bunch, Like this is the quarterbacks progression. He's
- 24:20Speaker 1: going this hook, this snack route to the flat. If
- 24:23Speaker 1: you pull out and that corner sits on that, he
- 24:25Speaker 1: going to the seven. If you go back, he's going
- 24:27Speaker 1: to the flat. If he has man, he's going to
- 24:30Speaker 1: the front side to the to the ram concept, whereas
- 24:32Speaker 1: there's to sit and the drag. And I think that
- 24:36Speaker 1: helped me so much because, like you said, you you
- 24:39Speaker 1: didn't play till college. I didn't play U till I
- 24:41Speaker 1: was junior. I didn't play corner until I was a
- 24:43Speaker 1: junior in college, and nobody really taught me how to play.
- 24:47Speaker 1: So I just kind of use my knowledge of offense
- 24:50Speaker 1: to like put me in positions. But my pedal wasn't
- 24:52Speaker 1: great because I was never like a true like corner corner,
- 24:56Speaker 1: you know, so I couldn't really like I'm six three
- 24:58Speaker 1: with big feet, I'm not about to sit in this
- 25:01Speaker 1: pedal and be able to transition the way a six
- 25:04Speaker 1: foot five eleven corner is gonna be able to who's
- 25:07Speaker 1: play corner for the last ten years is gonna be
- 25:08Speaker 1: able to transition. But I want to get to the
- 25:10Speaker 1: same spots, So I would I would maneuver my body
- 25:13Speaker 1: in a way that I could put myself in position
- 25:16Speaker 1: to almost be a receiver at corner, Like hey, I'm
- 25:19Speaker 1: gonna put my body in a position where I'm about
- 25:22Speaker 1: to run this route for him, like I'm just gonna
- 25:23Speaker 1: bang get out of this break and then go get
- 25:25Speaker 1: the ball, because that's the way I can still get
- 25:28Speaker 1: it covered. And I think that's another reason why my
- 25:30Speaker 1: game is a little more unorthodox to people, and it
- 25:33Speaker 1: didn't just look right on tape to people because they're like, man,
- 25:35Speaker 1: I want to see, like certain is the most beautiful
- 25:38Speaker 1: tape you gonna see. That boy's pure that if you
- 25:44Speaker 1: put him in nineteen seventy or put him in twenty
- 25:47Speaker 1: fifty seven, like the most pure tape you're gonna see
- 25:49Speaker 1: at corner.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Yeah, And what I try to tell people too, is
- 25:52Speaker 3: there is no blueprint on how to play the cornerback position,
- 25:55Speaker 3: Like everybody has to make it their own. Like what
- 25:58Speaker 3: what you were good at, I probably wouldn't be as
- 26:00Speaker 3: good at. So you know, it's one of those It's
- 26:03Speaker 3: one of those positions where.
- 26:06Speaker 2: You almost like, this is what Daryl Green did to me.
- 26:08Speaker 3: He watched me practice I want to say, about a
- 26:11Speaker 3: week or two, and our coach would just tell us
- 26:14Speaker 3: to go over there and just talk and just you know,
- 26:17Speaker 3: just talk about stuff, go go through stuff. So he
- 26:19Speaker 3: the reason he watched me because he wanted to know
- 26:23Speaker 3: what how to teach me basically, like what what is
- 26:26Speaker 3: going to resonate with him to his game his length
- 26:29Speaker 3: because we were totally different body types. So he knew
- 26:33Speaker 3: that with my long arms it be it'd be beneficial
- 26:37Speaker 3: if I get my hands on people.
- 26:39Speaker 2: He was never that guy.
- 26:41Speaker 1: He was.
- 26:41Speaker 3: He was a guy that's gonna stay in your hip pocket,
- 26:44Speaker 3: stay on top of you. You can't run by him.
- 26:47Speaker 3: He's that guy. So he took that part of my game,
- 26:52Speaker 3: of of his game, and inserted into my game. So
- 26:55Speaker 3: that's when I learned, like understanding that hands are great
- 26:57Speaker 3: feet of better, Like if you start with your feet,
- 27:02Speaker 3: then your hands will come. So but he didn't know
- 27:04Speaker 3: that until he really watched me. He could have went
- 27:07Speaker 3: up there and tried to teach me how he knows it,
- 27:09Speaker 3: but that doesn't relate to me. Like, so every corner
- 27:12Speaker 3: got to figure out what works for them.
- 27:14Speaker 2: There is no book. Now, there's some things that are constant.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Your feet, your footwork that's always going to be important,
- 27:21Speaker 3: like how you move in your body position. I can't
- 27:24Speaker 3: teach you how to make picks, like you know, I'll
- 27:27Speaker 3: get you to the point where you're probably in position.
- 27:29Speaker 3: But when it's time to make me play on that ball,
- 27:31Speaker 3: that's you.
- 27:33Speaker 1: That's the moment of truth.
- 27:34Speaker 3: That's the moment of truth for sure. Like you either
- 27:36Speaker 3: make the player you don't. I don't care if you're
- 27:38Speaker 3: in a position, can you make the play? And that's
- 27:40Speaker 3: what you know, bottam blah.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Right. Thinking back to your days at Folkston and Georgia,
- 27:47Speaker 1: when did it hit you that you were you were?
- 27:49Speaker 1: You were better than most of the people around you.
- 27:51Speaker 1: You know what I mean, that you were the ones.
- 27:54Speaker 3: I'm a running back at heart, Like I played running
- 27:56Speaker 3: back all through high school, even in you know, my well,
- 28:00Speaker 3: I played quarterback, but we were more like a running
- 28:01Speaker 3: back at quarterback.
- 28:02Speaker 2: We didn't throw the ball.
- 28:03Speaker 3: So my first carried in my life sixty yard touchdown.
- 28:09Speaker 2: That's when I knew.
- 28:13Speaker 3: Seriously, hey, first touch sixty yards and I just really
- 28:19Speaker 3: I was always faster. I had an older brother three
- 28:22Speaker 3: years older. I was always faster than everybody, and I
- 28:26Speaker 3: saw my brother do it, so everything he did I
- 28:28Speaker 3: kind of wanted to do too. So I had that
- 28:31Speaker 3: impression upon me, you know, in my house, like he
- 28:33Speaker 3: inspired me to want to get out there.
- 28:35Speaker 2: But I also knew I was fast. I could run.
- 28:37Speaker 3: I wasn't the fastest, but I was one of the fastest.
- 28:42Speaker 3: But I was also tough, like so once I got
- 28:45Speaker 3: out there, man, and I just it was it was inevitable,
- 28:49Speaker 3: Like everybody just knew like, oh yeah, and then from
- 28:52Speaker 3: then on, when I was eight, I was probably the
- 28:55Speaker 3: most talked about athlete in my town all the way
- 28:58Speaker 3: through high school for the next eleven years, that's all
- 29:01Speaker 3: people talking to when dude, it was that's exactly. But
- 29:05Speaker 3: we were a football town, Like I'm talking about three
- 29:08Speaker 3: thousand people. You know, it's a very small town, so
- 29:11Speaker 3: everybody knows everybody and beneficial to me. That sort of
- 29:15Speaker 3: insulated me, like people protected me. So when I was
- 29:18Speaker 3: in the streets, it was, you know, I still found
- 29:21Speaker 3: ways to get in trouble, but at the same time,
- 29:23Speaker 3: it wasn't.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Too harsh because people fought for me. So you know.
- 29:28Speaker 3: So when I think back to that time, it's like, man,
- 29:31Speaker 3: I had the path laid out for me, but I
- 29:33Speaker 3: had to see my brother do it first. I think
- 29:36Speaker 3: if my brother didn't do it, I wouldn't be I
- 29:39Speaker 3: probably wouldn't be where I am now.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Like he kind of pulled me up, like pulled me up.
- 29:43Speaker 3: I was never going to be as fast as strong
- 29:45Speaker 3: as him until I became an adult.
- 29:47Speaker 2: We went to college together and started together all.
- 29:50Speaker 3: That, but still it wasn't until that point that I
- 29:53Speaker 3: knew I was bigger faster and stronger, and I had
- 29:55Speaker 3: a better a higher ceiling than he did. But again
- 29:58Speaker 3: I always put him on that pedestale because I mean
- 30:01Speaker 3: without him, I wasn't going nowhere.
- 30:04Speaker 1: That's crazy because I feel the same way about my brother,
- 30:06Speaker 1: and he's three years above me. Like everything he did,
- 30:09Speaker 1: I just wanted to be a little bit better at
- 30:11Speaker 1: what he did. Like I found myself. I wore the
- 30:14Speaker 1: number four because number four respectfully, like he was doing track.
- 30:19Speaker 1: We never ran track in our lives. He started doing
- 30:21Speaker 1: long jumping, triple jump. I get to call I mean
- 30:23Speaker 1: high school. I'm like, I'm about to break his long
- 30:25Speaker 1: jump records, triple jump record. I just whatever he wanted
- 30:28Speaker 1: to do. That's what I'm what I'm on. That's funny.
- 30:31Speaker 1: That's funny. When you were when you think about yourself
- 30:35Speaker 1: in your absolute prime and you you at the top
- 30:38Speaker 1: of your game, is there a certain game or play.
- 30:42Speaker 1: I mean, you got that hundred yard pick six against
- 30:44Speaker 1: the Patriots that that's one of those plays that I
- 30:46Speaker 1: want to ask you. That's Ben Watson's claim the fame.
- 30:55Speaker 1: But is there a play that sticks out in your
- 30:57Speaker 1: mind as like our game where you, like, man, I
- 30:59Speaker 1: was just in that zone. It just everything went right.
- 31:01Speaker 3: There, probably against Arizona.
- 31:07Speaker 2: It was just a game.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Man.
- 31:08Speaker 3: It felt like I was out there floating, like it
- 31:10Speaker 3: was just I just knew everything that was coming. I
- 31:12Speaker 3: think I had had two picks in that game. It
- 31:15Speaker 3: was maybe my first or second year in Denver. That
- 31:18Speaker 3: was just hot, like everything was sticking to me.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Ball come my way down. Pick. Yeah, it was either
- 31:26Speaker 2: ten or the eight.
- 31:27Speaker 3: It was back to back seasons, so it was either
- 31:29Speaker 3: five or six it was. I can't remember what year
- 31:32Speaker 3: it was, but I just remember that game because I
- 31:35Speaker 3: stole a pick from John Lynch. H I mean, I'm
- 31:39Speaker 3: I wasn't even supposed to be there and balls selling.
- 31:42Speaker 3: I think it was Matt Lioner or somebody throwing the ball,
- 31:44Speaker 3: I can't remember, and I just jumped up on it.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Lynches right there and he just he was so mad.
- 31:51Speaker 2: But it was just one of them.
- 31:53Speaker 3: I picked a slant right in front of An Kwan
- 31:55Speaker 3: like it was just one of those games. Man. I
- 31:57Speaker 3: just I was on fire, and that's there was a
- 32:00Speaker 3: few games like that. We played the Saints once and
- 32:03Speaker 3: Drew Brees let us up for about four to sixty.
- 32:07Speaker 3: I'll never forget because it was just bombs away. But
- 32:10Speaker 3: he didn't do anything against me. And I always knew
- 32:14Speaker 3: that when I played Drew Brees, he wasn't gonna try me.
- 32:17Speaker 3: He was just one of those like he is just
- 32:20Speaker 3: not going there, and he did not go there the
- 32:22Speaker 3: whole He threw one ball at me and I broke
- 32:24Speaker 3: it up and he never came back the rest of
- 32:26Speaker 3: the day.
- 32:27Speaker 2: But he ate us, He ate everybody else, So he
- 32:30Speaker 2: was killing us that day.
- 32:31Speaker 3: But we still won the game nevertheless, Right, But it
- 32:34Speaker 3: was just just moments. I'm sure there's more games, but
- 32:38Speaker 3: that those two seasons though, oh my god, like it
- 32:41Speaker 3: was just it wasn't easy, but it wasn't I made
- 32:46Speaker 3: it look easy.
- 32:49Speaker 1: I love that. That's how that's probably my twelve and
- 32:51Speaker 1: thirteen when because you had eighteen of those two, I
- 32:54Speaker 1: had sixteen. I had eight and eighty back to back,
- 32:56Speaker 1: and it just everything that you touched her in the gold.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I remember, I think I had a month where I
- 33:02Speaker 1: had six, like a November where I just I had
- 33:06Speaker 1: two picks, two picks, two picks. I was like, y'all
- 33:08Speaker 1: better stop playing with me. I figured it out.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I think there was you know, there was one
- 33:13Speaker 3: damn dog. Now you reminded me of stuff. There was
- 33:16Speaker 3: one stat where I had like five straight picks in
- 33:19Speaker 3: the red zone or something. Oh no, it was five
- 33:22Speaker 3: straight games with a pick to start the season, and
- 33:25Speaker 3: then I had like five in the red zone or something.
- 33:27Speaker 3: It was just weird, like that's never been done or something.
- 33:31Speaker 3: I'm like, damn, you know really, you know, I'm just
- 33:33Speaker 3: out there playing ball, Like I had no idea, but
- 33:36Speaker 3: I just felt like so on top of my game,
- 33:38Speaker 3: like you just couldn't fool me with anything. And you know,
- 33:42Speaker 3: I had Shanahan at the time, and he was just
- 33:44Speaker 3: a players coach, like really laid back but intense at
- 33:48Speaker 3: the same time, all about practice. So he favored everything
- 33:52Speaker 3: that I was good at practice, you know, being on time,
- 33:56Speaker 3: good teammate, you know, not very vocally, but a leader,
- 34:01Speaker 3: you know, like it's he he was. He was by
- 34:04Speaker 3: far my favorite coach because of how he allowed me
- 34:07Speaker 3: to be me.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Kyle. Kyle is very similar. Everything just got you. Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 1: We went to the Super Bowl in nineteen and I
- 34:17Speaker 1: had an all Pro season that season, and that was
- 34:19Speaker 1: that was late in the career after the achilles after
- 34:21Speaker 1: I tore my achilles and you talk about having a
- 34:23Speaker 1: gesture game, like after you look, I would I was five.
- 34:27Speaker 3: I don't know how you did that. I don't know
- 34:30Speaker 3: how you did that. I'm just like, oh, he's done.
- 34:33Speaker 3: What Achilles at corner.
- 34:37Speaker 2: I gotta give you a lot of credit for even
- 34:38Speaker 2: trying to come back.
- 34:40Speaker 1: God, I appreciate that. I appreciate that. It was it
- 34:42Speaker 1: was tough. It was tough, but it was just all
- 34:44Speaker 1: mental at that point, Like it was all like you
- 34:47Speaker 1: talk about knowing what's going on in front of you,
- 34:49Speaker 1: knowing what's coming, knowing where I could put myself in
- 34:52Speaker 1: positions I can be in, knowing stuff I can't get.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Look if he stutter his feet right here and it
- 34:57Speaker 1: ain't a curl. If I break, I'm done. So look,
- 35:03Speaker 1: I know that feeling. You got one, lad, you got one.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Guess you either gonna go deep or you stopping here.
- 35:10Speaker 2: It's not one of the other, it's not both. I'm
- 35:12Speaker 2: not from top. I know that feeling, man, I know
- 35:17Speaker 2: that feeling. That's how it was when I hurt my
- 35:19Speaker 2: foot and I came back.
- 35:21Speaker 3: I never get that first game I tried to come back,
- 35:23Speaker 3: I was like, oh no, I don't feel it like
- 35:25Speaker 3: I felt good working out during the week and I
- 35:28Speaker 3: tried to come back. Man, I missed two more games
- 35:30Speaker 3: after that. I was like, I'm not trying to step
- 35:32Speaker 3: on that field till my mind is right, Like I
- 35:35Speaker 3: have no confidence in my foot.
- 35:37Speaker 1: That shit is. It's crippling as a as a player
- 35:40Speaker 1: when you know your body can move a certain way
- 35:42Speaker 1: when you when you out there disabled and you ain't
- 35:44Speaker 1: got the explosiveness and the things that are usually at
- 35:48Speaker 1: your at your discretion.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Boy, Nah, it's nothing like when you get old and
- 35:55Speaker 3: then you get hurt, and then it's already bad enough
- 35:58Speaker 3: because I'm older now now I got to try to
- 36:00Speaker 3: fight through this injury. Man, that shit, it just hurts
- 36:03Speaker 3: your mind, Like how do I trick myself into being ready? Like,
- 36:07Speaker 3: I mean, think about it the year y'all want a
- 36:09Speaker 3: Super Bowl when y'all beat us, Dude.
- 36:12Speaker 2: I didn't feel it at the time.
- 36:15Speaker 3: But when I reflect on that game, that was the
- 36:18Speaker 3: last game of my career. But when I reflect on
- 36:21Speaker 3: that game, I was like I should not have been
- 36:23Speaker 3: out there, Like I shouldn't been starting.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Well, I probably could have played twenty snaps.
- 36:27Speaker 1: But not fifty.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Like there was no one like what am.
- 36:31Speaker 1: I doing, but the competitor in you.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I would never be real with myself because I
- 36:36Speaker 3: just not at the time, like now, I was like yeah,
- 36:40Speaker 3: But at the time, I'm just thinking like, yeah, I'm
- 36:42Speaker 3: pushing through this, this is I feel good. I'm hell no,
- 36:46Speaker 3: what am I doing? Chris Harris got hurt, it was over.
- 36:48Speaker 3: I was like, oh, damn. At the moment, I was like, damn, damn,
- 36:51Speaker 3: I can't damn. Chris got hurt at the wrong time
- 36:54Speaker 3: because it was the playoff game before the championship game,
- 36:57Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden, here am back in
- 37:00Speaker 3: the starting lineup. I'm like, man, I'm not equipped for
- 37:03Speaker 3: sixty plays anymore. It's just not me. Like twenty plays.
- 37:06Speaker 3: I got you, But no, I should not have been starting.
- 37:10Speaker 1: But you don't have it in you to quit. You
- 37:13Speaker 1: don't have it in you to say no.
- 37:14Speaker 3: It's and that's that's the good and the bad of it, right, Like,
- 37:20Speaker 3: you know, that's the reason I was who I was.
- 37:23Speaker 3: But man, you know people often asked, do I am
- 37:26Speaker 3: I mad? I never moved to safety. I'm like, not really,
- 37:30Speaker 3: because there's only a lot of a few of us
- 37:32Speaker 3: that can say we only did corner you know, it's
- 37:34Speaker 3: only a few, and I'm like, I'm one of them,
- 37:37Speaker 3: so I'm gonna I'm gonna be prideful about that.
- 37:39Speaker 2: And Darn Green's very good at reminding everybody. Yo, Yeah,
- 37:42Speaker 2: y'all suckers went and played safety.
- 37:45Speaker 3: You know, It's just one of them things we get
- 37:47Speaker 3: jab at the guys that prolonged their career by moving
- 37:49Speaker 3: like and I get it, like I saw D'Angelo Hall
- 37:52Speaker 3: do it.
- 37:52Speaker 2: I mean, Charles Woolson did it the best.
- 37:54Speaker 3: I mean, it's I wanted to do it, but I
- 37:58Speaker 3: just never did. Nobody put it in front of me,
- 38:00Speaker 3: nobody said it, and I never lobby before it.
- 38:03Speaker 1: So but I still think that's the reason the Woodson's
- 38:07Speaker 1: don't get. They just do at corner. I think that's
- 38:09Speaker 1: the biggest reason people don't give like when they say
- 38:11Speaker 1: the best corner to ever play. They you know, they
- 38:14Speaker 1: talk about you, they talk about Prime, they talk about
- 38:17Speaker 1: you know, all these guys. But Charles Woodson and Darrel Would,
- 38:20Speaker 1: I mean and Rod Woodson were in that conversation, but
- 38:24Speaker 1: they moved to safety and got so many picks and
- 38:26Speaker 1: became almost known for that kind of versatility that people
- 38:29Speaker 1: are like, oh, they just DB's they not just corners,
- 38:31Speaker 1: and it's like, Okay.
- 38:32Speaker 3: Here's my take on the young Woodson, Charles Woodson, and
- 38:36Speaker 3: you I would say Rod Woodson is right behind him.
- 38:40Speaker 3: Charles Woodson is the best d d's who ever played
- 38:42Speaker 3: the game. Like when you talk about top to bottom,
- 38:47Speaker 3: what it takes, tackling, taking the ball away, man, the man,
- 38:52Speaker 3: he did all that at a high cliff. I don't
- 38:55Speaker 3: care if he played safety, like, but when you talk
- 38:57Speaker 3: about his body of work and what he did, what did.
- 39:00Speaker 2: He played eighteen seasons? I mean the dude.
- 39:04Speaker 3: I mean he started his career. I think he was
- 39:08Speaker 3: in a holdout and I think he got hurt his
- 39:10Speaker 3: rookie year or something, maybe a second year somewhere down
- 39:13Speaker 3: the road he got hurt. So he's dealt with all
- 39:15Speaker 3: this stuff and still put the best dB campaign I've
- 39:19Speaker 3: ever seen on tape. Like he I mean, you got
- 39:22Speaker 3: to think I modeled mysel. I was a year behind him.
- 39:25Speaker 3: He played both ways in college, so did I. So
- 39:28Speaker 3: I tried to do everything better than him.
- 39:31Speaker 1: But it was to keep the dude.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Every week, Like the year he won Defensive Player.
- 39:37Speaker 3: Of the Year, he just just picked six picks, like God,
- 39:40Speaker 3: damn man. Next thing, you know, he's at sixty picks
- 39:43Speaker 3: and then I retire and he's still playing.
- 39:45Speaker 2: I'm like, well, god, like, come on, man, season, Oh
- 39:49Speaker 2: my god.
- 39:50Speaker 3: I mean the pick he had against the Broncos when
- 39:52Speaker 3: he jumped and it was right over Damaris Thomas and
- 39:57Speaker 3: and he landed on his back. I think it's one
- 39:59Speaker 3: of the sweet picks I've ever seen. And I'm like,
- 40:01Speaker 3: how was he doing that at ninety years old? Like
- 40:04Speaker 3: what is going on? The dude was just eating right, man?
- 40:08Speaker 3: And he's a football god, Like, I mean, I put
- 40:11Speaker 3: him on a pedestal, like hands down complete defensive back.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Charles Woodson The best album YEP.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Agreed, Agreed, not even a discussion, like it's just pure
- 40:25Speaker 1: you talk about just what you were talking about earlier
- 40:28Speaker 1: of just football players, Like he's just a football player.
- 40:31Speaker 1: You put him on the field, he's gonna play football.
- 40:33Speaker 1: He's gonna he's gonna make plays, he's gonna be around
- 40:35Speaker 1: the ball, he's gonna take it. He's gonna beat football players,
- 40:38Speaker 1: whether it's safety, corner. You really don't know what position
- 40:40Speaker 1: yet because he out there playing football.
- 40:42Speaker 3: But yeah, and you can't and you can't tell people
- 40:44Speaker 3: watch him, no, because the way he did it. I
- 40:49Speaker 3: remember when I started playing inside and he had been
- 40:51Speaker 3: playing inside for a while, and I'm like, man, this
- 40:55Speaker 3: ship is not as easy as he makes it look like.
- 40:59Speaker 3: I think he just is is mindset. And then he
- 41:02Speaker 3: just got this relentless attack to go get the ball.
- 41:04Speaker 3: It's like, I mean, come on, man.
- 41:07Speaker 1: I remember we went to the Pro Bowl together and
- 41:09Speaker 1: we were sitting there talking because he was my idol.
- 41:11Speaker 1: He was the one I was like, man, I got
- 41:12Speaker 1: to be like Charles Woodson. I want to do everything
- 41:14Speaker 1: he did. Like you said, it's way harder than it seems.
- 41:17Speaker 1: But he used to talk about like, hey, just make
- 41:19Speaker 1: the game easy for yourself. Make it like your corner
- 41:22Speaker 1: that has no athleticism. You just need to watch the game.
- 41:25Speaker 1: You need to understand every concept. You need to understand
- 41:27Speaker 1: what they're doing, like you got no athleticism and still
- 41:30Speaker 1: be able to make those plays. And that's the way
- 41:32Speaker 1: I played it. But he told me, he was like,
- 41:34Speaker 1: the way I attack the ball is when I'm going
- 41:36Speaker 1: to tackle, I know they not leaving without it. Yeah,
- 41:39Speaker 1: he said, So when I go in there, I'm grabbing
- 41:41Speaker 1: the ball, and if they leave without it, then it's
- 41:43Speaker 1: staying with me and you can go wherever you want
- 41:45Speaker 1: to go, but you're not leaving without the football. And
- 41:47Speaker 1: if I do that most times, that's four or five
- 41:51Speaker 1: force fumbles a year. That's two or three interceptions. That's
- 41:54Speaker 1: I said, Charles, you making that sound way easier than
- 41:57Speaker 1: it is. But that's a simple way.
- 42:01Speaker 3: And you sound like the typical young guy trying to
- 42:03Speaker 3: get some real nuggets. But you know, but on the
- 42:07Speaker 3: flip side, he can't explain how he's doing it. And
- 42:10Speaker 3: I remember young boy young corners used to ask me
- 42:13Speaker 3: all the time.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Like how do you drive on that dig? How you
- 42:16Speaker 2: do this? Do that? Like, Bro, it's just experience.
- 42:19Speaker 3: Like I can't really tell you what's gonna happen all
- 42:23Speaker 3: the time. I just I can watch film. I can
- 42:26Speaker 3: identify tendencies. But when I'm out there and I've got
- 42:30Speaker 3: the body of experience that I have behind me, that's
- 42:33Speaker 3: what enables me to break on this the way I
- 42:35Speaker 3: do and see things coming before it happens.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Like I can't, I can't really tell you.
- 42:40Speaker 3: Let's just be very good with what you know and
- 42:43Speaker 3: the hope you get enough experience to be great. You know,
- 42:46Speaker 3: when you really got that knowledge because it was just
- 42:50Speaker 3: I see young corners. Now, if you don't understand football,
- 42:54Speaker 3: it's harder for you. Like you, you gotta understand football,
- 42:58Speaker 3: and football is not a complicated game. We make it complicated,
- 43:02Speaker 3: we do because we're trying to trick one another. But
- 43:04Speaker 3: it's really not complicated. Like if you the corner, stay
- 43:07Speaker 3: outside the run, play, don't.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Cut it, make it cut back, you know what I mean?
- 43:11Speaker 3: But I see a lot of corners chasing from inside
- 43:13Speaker 3: out and it's it's it's it's weird because they need
- 43:17Speaker 3: to have that experience in order to then be good
- 43:21Speaker 3: know what they're doing.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's the only way you teach yourself.
- 43:25Speaker 1: What what? So I want to this is for young
- 43:27Speaker 1: guys out there. I want you to explain during your
- 43:29Speaker 1: prime and everything's going your way, this is Champ, Champ,
- 43:33Speaker 1: what did a week look like for you in your
- 43:36Speaker 1: prime as a number one corner and like how much film,
- 43:41Speaker 1: how much off the field stuff taking care of your
- 43:43Speaker 1: body or was it just natural ability?
- 43:46Speaker 2: I know you say you practiced, are ninety percent natural?
- 43:50Speaker 3: H Honestly, I didn't really start like doing extra stuff
- 43:55Speaker 3: like as far as you know, just just core and
- 43:57Speaker 3: things like that. Still, I started getting the soft tissue injuries.
- 44:02Speaker 3: I always, you know, dealt with something maybe an ankle
- 44:04Speaker 3: here or there. But like I said, I never missed
- 44:06Speaker 3: a game until my sixth year in the league. So
- 44:10Speaker 3: that's when that all kind of started coming about because
- 44:13Speaker 3: I used to watch John Letch do it. He was
- 44:15Speaker 3: on his way out the league, and he would do
- 44:17Speaker 3: all these little extra things, core, all this stuff, you know,
- 44:20Speaker 3: just just body maintenance. And I didn't adopt that until
- 44:23Speaker 3: after he left. Before that, like when those years when
- 44:28Speaker 3: I was really doing it, maybe from my fourth year,
- 44:31Speaker 3: maybe maybe my third year, all the way to about
- 44:33Speaker 3: my eighth and ninth year, it was just a lot
- 44:36Speaker 3: of film, you know. But I always practice hard, you know.
- 44:40Speaker 3: I never took days off. It was just one of
- 44:42Speaker 3: those things I prouded myself just being present, like just
- 44:46Speaker 3: being there, just making sure I keep putting in the work.
- 44:48Speaker 2: The film was the film.
- 44:49Speaker 3: We watched film in the meeting room, but I'm watching
- 44:54Speaker 3: twice as much at home, you know. So it's it
- 44:56Speaker 3: was always that I didn't do a lot of the
- 45:00Speaker 3: chiropractice and all that, Like I just didn't. I don't
- 45:03Speaker 3: know why I didn't take a lot of like supplements
- 45:07Speaker 3: or anything. For one, some guys would get popped for
- 45:09Speaker 3: supplements and I don't know if it was intentional or accident,
- 45:13Speaker 3: but they would say it was an accident.
- 45:15Speaker 2: So I was always afraid of it.
- 45:16Speaker 3: So and I proud of myself on not putting too
- 45:19Speaker 3: many toxins in my body. Yeah, I would have a
- 45:21Speaker 3: drink here and there, but other than that, I wouldn't
- 45:23Speaker 3: do a whole lot. So it was that's just who
- 45:26Speaker 3: I was. I was a football junkie, like I loved
- 45:29Speaker 3: the game, and I honestly think that mindset is what
- 45:33Speaker 3: translated on the field, and that's what you saw and
- 45:36Speaker 3: somebody who just loved being out there. You got to
- 45:38Speaker 3: think my whole life, I would never be on the
- 45:41Speaker 3: sideline until I got to college my first two years
- 45:43Speaker 3: and then I ended up playing more offense, and I
- 45:47Speaker 3: was never on the sideline again. Then I got to
- 45:49Speaker 3: the league and I had that same mindset. So I
- 45:51Speaker 3: played some offense in Washington, I played some in Denver.
- 45:54Speaker 3: So I always was just a football junkie. I wanted
- 45:58Speaker 3: to be on the field. That's what I knew. And
- 46:00Speaker 3: it didn't take a lot of extra stuff to get
- 46:02Speaker 3: me ready for a game.
- 46:05Speaker 2: And now when I look back, I wish I would
- 46:07Speaker 2: have done more.
- 46:07Speaker 3: Maybe I would have played eighteen nineteen instead of fifteen
- 46:11Speaker 3: fifteen is enough, don't get me wrong, especially right at corner.
- 46:17Speaker 3: But you know, that's just who I was. I didn't
- 46:20Speaker 3: try to overthink the process. And I saw guys doing
- 46:22Speaker 3: a lot, and you know a lot of them were
- 46:24Speaker 3: marginal players.
- 46:26Speaker 2: So I was like.
- 46:27Speaker 3: Thinking, like that might be what's keeping them here, you
- 46:29Speaker 3: know what I'm saying.
- 46:30Speaker 2: So it is what it is.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Man.
- 46:32Speaker 3: Everybody has to figure out what works for them. It's
- 46:35Speaker 3: no different from playing the game. We'll find out what
- 46:37Speaker 3: works for you. There's so much you can take from grades,
- 46:40Speaker 3: but it still has to work for you. And that's
- 46:44Speaker 3: just who I was.
- 46:46Speaker 1: It's so cool to hear you talk about the things
- 46:48Speaker 1: on the field because it is something about being on
- 46:51Speaker 1: that field on game day and certain things. It just
- 46:55Speaker 1: makes sense. It's like a puzzle piece is fitting together,
- 46:58Speaker 1: like when you at the line, like oh, his mannerisms,
- 47:01Speaker 1: Oh he's about to run a deep ball, Like oh,
- 47:03Speaker 1: he's way too excited right now, Like oh I could
- 47:06Speaker 1: this is I feel him. I feel where we're going
- 47:08Speaker 1: right now. I feel yeah, okay, let's go.
- 47:10Speaker 3: Let's dance then, Like when we used when we used
- 47:12Speaker 3: to play the Steelers, they had man, they used to
- 47:16Speaker 3: have so many tails, and it.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Was just it was basically because they had Ben.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Roethlisberger and he was just he just had a cannon
- 47:22Speaker 3: like he could fit balls in any any space. And
- 47:25Speaker 3: they kept their offense basic. Every time it was a
- 47:29Speaker 3: Mike Wallace. Every time he lined up inside, he's going deep.
- 47:33Speaker 3: So it was just like it was like so predictable,
- 47:37Speaker 3: but it was still hard to hell to stop. So
- 47:41Speaker 3: so it's just you know, you get a feel for
- 47:43Speaker 3: all that, and sometimes teams ain't trying to trick you,
- 47:45Speaker 3: so you just got to get a feel for it.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Like if it feel like if it walked like a duck,
- 47:54Speaker 1: quack like a duck, it's not a chicken, trusted, trusted, and.
- 47:59Speaker 2: They don't to trick themselves either, So it is what
- 48:02Speaker 2: it is.
- 48:03Speaker 1: That that was so and you talked about not getting
- 48:05Speaker 1: targeted with with with Drew Brees, That's how it was
- 48:07Speaker 1: with Aaron and Tom with me, like we get out
- 48:10Speaker 1: there and Aaron and everything he put me on, they
- 48:16Speaker 1: be on the backside, have a receiver he wouldn't even
- 48:17Speaker 1: signal a route to him. I'll be like, is he
- 48:19Speaker 1: gonna signal it to you? I'm waiting for it, because
- 48:21Speaker 1: it's either this, he's gonna wrap, scratch his back, he's
- 48:23Speaker 1: gonna scratch his face. He's gonna do with that. I
- 48:26Speaker 1: know the routes. He needs to signal you something, so
- 48:28Speaker 1: they just run jog or go route and I'll be like, okay.
- 48:30Speaker 2: So you just it's funny you say that.
- 48:32Speaker 3: You y'all were playing Green Bay, and I swear Aaron
- 48:34Speaker 3: Rodgers didn't look over that one time. He might have,
- 48:36Speaker 3: he might have peeked over there and went back the
- 48:38Speaker 3: other way, but he never looked over there one time.
- 48:41Speaker 3: And I never played against Aaron Rodgers except once in
- 48:44Speaker 3: the preseason, and he and he during the play, I
- 48:48Speaker 3: think they may have played it.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Walking down the field.
- 48:50Speaker 3: He was like, you think you're getting some balls today,
- 48:52Speaker 3: You're not getting nothing, you know, and basically just kind
- 48:54Speaker 3: of messing with me because he knows not the target there.
- 48:57Speaker 3: And I never get you played, Tom Brady. I mean,
- 49:01Speaker 3: you talking all kinds of ship during the game, pre game,
- 49:05Speaker 3: post game. I'm sure it was a lot of fire,
- 49:09Speaker 3: but I never get he threw that one up and
- 49:12Speaker 3: you picked it like damn, he got one ball.
- 49:16Speaker 2: And got a pick.
- 49:19Speaker 3: But no, that's but that's how when when you're on
- 49:22Speaker 3: top of your game, that's what happens. Man, and you
- 49:25Speaker 3: you it was just perfect because I was watching you closely,
- 49:27Speaker 3: because you were just making plays. I'm like, see what
- 49:30Speaker 3: this dude doing. Oh damn, Aaron Ros not even gonna
- 49:33Speaker 3: give him a chance. Next week, here go Tom Brady.
- 49:36Speaker 3: He don't even give you a chance, one chance, and
- 49:38Speaker 3: you pick him like, man, it's still the real deal.
- 49:41Speaker 1: It means so much that you watch me. Man, you
- 49:43Speaker 1: have no idea that means so much to me.
- 49:46Speaker 2: Come on, man, super Bowl champion.
- 49:50Speaker 1: You you the accolades, I mean, College Hall of Fame,
- 49:54Speaker 1: NFL Hall of Fame. Just one of the best and
- 49:56Speaker 1: most gifted to ever do it. And it's just like
- 49:59Speaker 1: when you I certain guys on tape, like you said,
- 50:02Speaker 1: everybody got their unique skill sets. I couldn't move like
- 50:04Speaker 1: you moved. You know what I mean if I wanted to,
- 50:07Speaker 1: I couldn't do with you different. Man, It's all different.
- 50:09Speaker 1: But I can make the plays. I can still get
- 50:11Speaker 1: my hands on the football. I could take it away
- 50:13Speaker 1: I can make the kind of impact that you were making.
- 50:16Speaker 1: And that's the way I try to factor it in
- 50:19Speaker 1: for myself, like, hey, I don't have to be like
- 50:21Speaker 1: them to make the plays that they're making. See what
- 50:25Speaker 1: they're seeing, recognize it, trigger like they're triggering, get to
- 50:28Speaker 1: the spot that they're getting to, and catch the football
- 50:31Speaker 1: when it gets in your hands. That's the big part
- 50:33Speaker 1: of this game that's changing. Like even these elite corners
- 50:36Speaker 1: that's getting paid all this money, there's so many of them,
- 50:38Speaker 1: and they're doing a great job. They're covering, they knocking
- 50:40Speaker 1: the ball down there in great position. But you look
- 50:43Speaker 1: at them. McDuffie just got paid thirty one million dollars
- 50:46Speaker 1: a year, three career picks, like Sauce got thirty million
- 50:51Speaker 1: dollars whatever he got, I think he got too. Yeah,
- 50:55Speaker 1: but they're just not catching like you were saying earlier,
- 50:57Speaker 1: Like they're just not catching. It's not like they're not
- 50:59Speaker 1: getting position, they're not making plays, they're playing great defense. Yeah,
- 51:02Speaker 1: they're just not catching them like they used to. And
- 51:04Speaker 1: then on top of that, these quarterbacks are risk averse.
- 51:07Speaker 1: They're worried about their efficiency numbers. They don't want to
- 51:09Speaker 1: be getting killed on Twitter because they back in the
- 51:12Speaker 1: day they throw five interceptions three touchdowns long as they
- 51:14Speaker 1: won the game. It's good. Now you throw five interceptions
- 51:18Speaker 1: three touchdowns, even if you win, they gonna they're gonna
- 51:20Speaker 1: be killing you talking about hey, you stink and you
- 51:22Speaker 1: bad and social media is gonna kill you.
- 51:24Speaker 2: So damn.
- 51:25Speaker 3: That's a whole other element that I didn't really think about. Yeah,
- 51:27Speaker 3: the criticism is there, and it's fast, it's nast.
- 51:31Speaker 1: And that's the part that I don't think gets enough
- 51:34Speaker 1: credit about just playing in this era with all the
- 51:37Speaker 1: analytics and all that. Like, people were scrutinizing my game
- 51:40Speaker 1: to the point where they're like, he gave up two
- 51:42Speaker 1: catches to this, and it gave up three catches to this.
- 51:45Speaker 1: And it's like you we watching every clip and every
- 51:49Speaker 1: posture and everything in my game, and then you look
- 51:51Speaker 1: up and it's like, for my career, I gave up
- 51:54Speaker 1: forty nine point eight percent of the pass its thrown
- 51:56Speaker 1: my way. I had thirty seven interceptions and gave up
- 51:59Speaker 1: sixteen touchdo It's like, yeah, that's what it is. You know,
- 52:02Speaker 1: it ain't.
- 52:04Speaker 2: You know anybody would live with those steps. Come on, you.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Gotta gotta live with them if you were, if you
- 52:10Speaker 1: were building a perfect dB. What are some non negotiable
- 52:14Speaker 1: What are three non negotiable traits? They gotta have.
- 52:18Speaker 2: One confidence.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Stream, confidence, athleticism and playmaking ability.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Uh.
- 52:30Speaker 3: You know, it's one thing to shut somebody down and
- 52:32Speaker 3: not let them catch it, but you gotta make plays.
- 52:34Speaker 3: Like I'm all about the playmaking, right, And you know,
- 52:39Speaker 3: I heard Sante Samuel talk about, you know, him making
- 52:42Speaker 3: a lot of plays.
- 52:45Speaker 2: I mean, I agree with him on one hand.
- 52:47Speaker 3: Man, Look, you got a lot of picks that's got
- 52:51Speaker 3: to be respected.
- 52:54Speaker 2: It's hard to take that ball away.
- 52:55Speaker 3: Now he's a little younger than me and he but
- 52:57Speaker 3: he played in my era and you know, it's definitely different.
- 53:02Speaker 3: But again, like I think he would still make plays
- 53:05Speaker 3: today if he was in his prime. So I give
- 53:07Speaker 3: him a lot of credit for bringing that up because
- 53:11Speaker 3: I don't want people to think, you know, that it's
- 53:16Speaker 3: all about picks. But at the same time, man, that
- 53:18Speaker 3: is highly important to me. Like, but without confidence and athleticism,
- 53:25Speaker 3: you ain't making no plays anyway. So give me that first,
- 53:29Speaker 3: and then the play making the ability to be a
- 53:31Speaker 3: close third.
- 53:33Speaker 1: I don't understand why they don't give it because why
- 53:35Speaker 1: they don't give him credit, don't I really don't understand that.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Like he got over fifty picks, he didn't give up
- 53:41Speaker 1: over twenty five touchdown. I think he might have gave
- 53:43Speaker 1: up twenty five twenty six. It wasn't like the way
- 53:45Speaker 1: they show his picture and the way they talked about
- 53:48Speaker 1: the Sante Samder, like he had fifty one interceptions and
- 53:50Speaker 1: he gave him fifty touchdowns like that.
- 53:52Speaker 3: That he's loud. It's just because he's loud. So I mean,
- 53:55Speaker 3: he says what he's what's on his mind. People don't
- 53:57Speaker 3: like that. You know, It's just it is what it is.
- 54:00Speaker 3: I mean, he had a great career. Now is he
- 54:02Speaker 3: better than Prome? No, I would say no. But you know,
- 54:04Speaker 3: at the same time, I'm gonna listen to his argument
- 54:07Speaker 3: because I know he was a high level corner, Like
- 54:10Speaker 3: the dude was one of the best, so you know,
- 54:12Speaker 3: so I'm gonna listen to what he gotta say and
- 54:14Speaker 3: give him that respect because what he did wasn't easy,
- 54:20Speaker 3: and you know, it's it's one of those things. Man,
- 54:23Speaker 3: he made his career off taking the ball away and
- 54:25Speaker 3: he was one of the best to do it.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. I agree with that, and I think
- 54:29Speaker 1: that's that's something that got to be valued. I would
- 54:32Speaker 1: like his name to be mentioned in the Hall of Fame,
- 54:34Speaker 1: you know, even if he get in fifteen years later.
- 54:36Speaker 1: I think, you know, during the time where it's hard
- 54:39Speaker 1: to take the ball away, he took it away and
- 54:41Speaker 1: he played that gambling game where he have two pick
- 54:44Speaker 1: sixes and give up a touchdown. And if you if
- 54:46Speaker 1: you're a corner, I'm living with that.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:49Speaker 1: If I didn't have two pick sixes and I gave
- 54:51Speaker 1: up one of the yeah.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Give me that.
- 54:53Speaker 3: I'll take that to take that all day.
- 54:56Speaker 1: Right. Who do you think during your time you played
- 54:59Speaker 1: against some of the greatest You talked about Mike Irvin,
- 55:01Speaker 1: who was the greatest receiver that you played against?
- 55:04Speaker 3: And it don't want to be a big name, oh man,
- 55:07Speaker 3: you know, well, it is a big name.
- 55:10Speaker 2: I would say Randy was the most talented.
- 55:16Speaker 3: To o right there nipping at his heels Marvin Harrison
- 55:19Speaker 3: because he had Peyton manning and he was still talented
- 55:22Speaker 3: as hell, but you know, Peyton made it even harder.
- 55:25Speaker 3: And I like to mention guys that you know, you
- 55:30Speaker 3: don't really think about, like Jimmy Smith, like straight dog
- 55:35Speaker 3: like he was. He's just one of those guys.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Man.
- 55:37Speaker 3: When it was third down and eight and they needed it,
- 55:40Speaker 3: he's getting the first down like and I thought I
- 55:43Speaker 3: could stop him, but I didn't. You know, from time
- 55:46Speaker 3: to time he catched that ball. But you know, it's
- 55:50Speaker 3: just he's just one of those guys that get you know,
- 55:53Speaker 3: sort of lost.
- 55:53Speaker 2: Steve Smith another good one, straight doll.
- 55:56Speaker 3: But it's hard to take my off Randy t O
- 56:02Speaker 3: Marvin because I saw him a lot and often and
- 56:05Speaker 3: they were problems, right.
- 56:07Speaker 1: That's that's how it was with me, Julio, some dogs,
- 56:13Speaker 1: Mega Tron, Mega Tron broj Oh my god. J don't
- 56:18Speaker 1: get enough credit. No, but when you get out there
- 56:21Speaker 1: with Megatron and you see some of the stuff that
- 56:23Speaker 1: he's putting on tape, you see three guys freaking guarding him,
- 56:26Speaker 1: he just up all three and you're like.
- 56:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I had to deal with him. I was a
- 56:31Speaker 3: little older, but he definitely got gave me problems. I'll
- 56:34Speaker 3: tell you that, because he's all six six, unning, all
- 56:39Speaker 3: the fast. I don't even know now, I don't even
- 56:43Speaker 3: know why he's a receiver. He should have been a quarterback,
- 56:48Speaker 3: tight end or something. I mean edge rusher coming up today,
- 56:52Speaker 3: he would have been an edge rusher, no doubt.
- 56:54Speaker 1: No doubt about. It would have been making one hundred
- 56:56Speaker 1: and fifty million dollars. It was illegal illegal, it's you.
- 57:00Speaker 1: You got to play with Peyton. Sorry, I just keep
- 57:02Speaker 1: you got to Peyton during that crazy year you played
- 57:04Speaker 1: against him as an opponent. How crazy was it to
- 57:07Speaker 1: watch him have that record set in season as part
- 57:09Speaker 1: of that team like that just it just looked like.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Especially it was unreal, bro, it was. It was just
- 57:16Speaker 2: crazy because he was just on point.
- 57:18Speaker 3: And people forget like we had weapons too, like E's Onou,
- 57:21Speaker 3: Wes Welker, Uh Thomas Jack Bubba Callwell Eric Decker, like
- 57:28Speaker 3: we had some some players, but you know, he was
- 57:33Speaker 3: just on point and they worked like he put the
- 57:36Speaker 3: work in. I think he was really hungry trying to
- 57:39Speaker 3: get that that next championship. But you know, unfortunately he
- 57:43Speaker 3: didn't have a defense to match that year. But they
- 57:46Speaker 3: had a historical offensive season. I mean it was just
- 57:49Speaker 3: one of those like they were just on point and
- 57:52Speaker 3: catching everybody off guard, and it was it was beautiful
- 57:55Speaker 3: to watch.
- 57:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember us watching it on tape preparing for
- 57:59Speaker 1: that game, and it was your It's like they were
- 58:00Speaker 1: running people off the field. They were literally running people
- 58:03Speaker 1: off the field every game, like corner. You know, people
- 58:06Speaker 1: getting up to the line, they don't they don't know
- 58:08Speaker 1: what play they run, and they can't communicate. And Peyton's
- 58:10Speaker 1: just in there, surgical.
- 58:13Speaker 3: Yeah, he'll outthink anybody. So you know, you got to
- 58:17Speaker 3: find a way to get to him. If you can
- 58:19Speaker 3: get to him, then then you can create problems for him.
- 58:21Speaker 3: But man, when he was on and he's in that
- 58:23Speaker 3: pocket clean, nobody's better, right, Look.
- 58:27Speaker 1: That look a couple of years later, they made up
- 58:30Speaker 1: for it when he won it his best that defense,
- 58:32Speaker 1: That defense carried him to a championship and deserved.
- 58:35Speaker 3: But that's that's what wins championship. Stops you get stops
- 58:39Speaker 3: you win, period. I don't care how many points you scored.
- 58:42Speaker 3: You gotta get stops. And if you can, if you
- 58:45Speaker 3: can create rek havoc on defense and create problems for
- 58:49Speaker 3: the offense, yeah, nobody's being yeah, because it's it's hard
- 58:52Speaker 3: as hell.
- 58:53Speaker 2: To stop people.
- 58:53Speaker 3: So when you do it, it's it's demoralizing.
- 58:56Speaker 1: It is, And then every year you see it, it's
- 58:58Speaker 1: some great defense should up in the Super Bowl. Beating
- 59:01Speaker 1: the hell out of somebody, and they're like, oh my god,
- 59:02Speaker 1: defense wins championship, Like y'all did not see Have y'all
- 59:05Speaker 1: not watched the history of this game? Y'all? Just like
- 59:08Speaker 1: seemed like every year y'all just realized that defense wins
- 59:10Speaker 1: championships In the Super.
- 59:11Speaker 3: Bowl, Yeah, that's all it is. I mean, I'll never
- 59:15Speaker 3: say anything different. You know, even though this league is
- 59:18Speaker 3: geared towards making the offenses great, it's all about defense.
- 59:22Speaker 3: It's and that's why the Broncos are gonna be a
- 59:24Speaker 3: problem for a while.
- 59:25Speaker 2: They keep that defense the way it is.
- 59:27Speaker 3: I don't care what they do on offense, they always
- 59:29Speaker 3: gonna have a shot and Seattle as well, your old
- 59:33Speaker 3: stomping ground.
- 59:33Speaker 2: Them boys are good man.
- 59:35Speaker 1: They play They play a solid Brandon defense. So did
- 59:37Speaker 1: you see that debate was having the best defense ever?
- 59:39Speaker 1: That no flies on leading the boom thing?
- 59:41Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, So who's who's.
- 59:44Speaker 1: Your best DP? The not just include those two, but
- 59:47Speaker 1: who's the best defense that you've ever seen play? Are
- 59:50Speaker 1: your top five? I guess?
- 59:51Speaker 2: Oh that Ravens defense in two thousand was stick, Now
- 59:56Speaker 2: I did? I am old enough to remember the eighty
- 59:59Speaker 2: five Bears. So so we will.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Say that you put them in there.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: It's hard to rank them, but I'll throw a few
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: in there. That Broncos defense for sure, y'all defense for
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: of course, in three.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: Or four years.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: I mean, Jesus Christ, it was a problem.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: Let me think, who am I missing? Hold on?
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Hold on that that that one. I can't ignore it.
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: They have some talent on that defense. You gotta think, like, yeah,
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: I ain't going that far back. I'm gonna try to
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: say it because only because I didn't see it. But
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: that two thousand Tampa defense, I mean, you got you're
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: talking about John Lynch, Rende Barber, Warren Sap, Derrick Brooks,
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: same and Rice I mean, Booger McFarland.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: I mean, come on, they were stacked.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: I mean, and that was I was pretty much raised
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: by them. They put us out the playoffs my rookie year.
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: But damn, I mean it's I would I would live
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: with that five I just mentioned. I mean, I'm sure
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: there's another one in there that I'm forgetting, but man,
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: it wasn't much better defense than that.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: And I wasn't part of any of them. So all good.
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: Man, Look, I had thirteen decoordinators in my career. So
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: I'll tell you, tell you what I was exposed to
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: for the most part.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: That's it's so tough to play great defense with all that. Like,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: how many different schemes did you play in?
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: I played three four four three, I mean, I mean everything, dog,
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: you name it.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: We played it like I was doing everything.
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: I mean, we played a lot of man, a lot
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: of song one year, like, I mean, it was just
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: it was everything. And I played with a lot of
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: greats too though, So you know, I got no complaints
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: about my career. It's just you know, I was never
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: on a great defense like I had. We had great moments,
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: but not as a as a whole. Nah.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: Never. Now to finish off, I gotta talk about your
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: off the field and your off the field passions. And
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: obviously you're in the film industry, Like after you got
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: done playing, what did your mind go to and how
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: did you end up getting into film?
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: Well, just through my connections, just so you know, the
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: writer director Glenn Owen as a Georgia guy.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: He played basketball at Georgia.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: He was a walk on there before I got there,
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: so a little older than me, and he just he
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: convinced me to get involved, and it was something that,
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: you know, if I was going to do something out
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: of the ordinary for myself, it had to be with
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: somebody I cared about it, somebody you know, I could
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: relate to, and he was one of those guys. So
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: I've been doing that. That's the first feature film I've done.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: I'm doing a lot of like consulting work, basically working
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: with companies. And I found myself at the damn State
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: Capitol a lot because of my bulldog connections. You know,
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: all the politicians bulldogs, right, So it's you know, it's
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: a different conversation when I walk in the room, you
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: know than the typical lobbyist walks in the room. So
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: you know, so I find myself doing that with this
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: medical cannabis company, peach State Health Plan, which is an
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: insurance company, and oakysinok Swamp Park, which is a park
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: by my hometown. So I do a lot of Georgia
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: based stuff because you know, that's one thing I wanted
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: to do is come back home and really tap into
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: this network. And it's been beautiful, man, and I just
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: kind of do deals. Now I will reveal something that
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: I missed out on. You probably not even aware, but.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: But maybe you are.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: So Prize Picks just sold for like a couple of
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: billion dollars, right, and the founder big bulldog fan. Right,
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: he gave me the opportunity to invest, and I missed
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: and I passed on it, and they just sold it.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, that's how I felt yesterday when.
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: Somebody told me. I was like, yea, and the guy
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: I love the guy like he was. He was a
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: great dude, like sharp about where he wanted to take
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: the company. And it wasn't until I saw those commercials
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: and I'm like, damn, I guess he took in big money.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: So and then a couple of years later, here he
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: is selling it for a couple of billion dollars.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: I'm like, man, come.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: On, when people approach you with deals like that is it?
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: And I'm don't mean to getting your finances, but I
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: just want to educate young dudes or young viewers that
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: might be watching about different ways you can approach endorsement deals.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Do they ask you to invest your capital or are
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: you selling like, hey, I endorse this with name and likeness,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: and you give me a certain amount of equity and
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: shares to be a part of this company.
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: Well, as you know, most people think it's money, right,
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: Most people want money, And I'm always like, well, I
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: like your brand, I like your company or whatever it is.
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: I can help you, but I ain't giving you money.
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: Like I bring value in other ways, Like I can
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: introduce you to people.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: I got a strong network.
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: I mean I could do this or that, but a
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: lot of times people need money, so that conversation can't
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: be ignored.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: But I can often help you get the money.
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: Right, like it doesn't always have to come out of
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: my bank account. And I had to kind of learn
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: that because you know, as you when you retire, you realize, damn,
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: I missed out on a lot. Yeah, so my mind
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: was never about anything outside of the game. You know,
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: I wish it was, but it wasn't. I wasn't raised
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: like that. I just focused on what I was doing.
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: But then now I realize my impact is much stronger
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: than what football tells you.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: Like, when you're playing, everybody.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: Sees you, so that's probably the most popular you're going
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: to be. But when you retire and kind of go
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: back into your and fall back into your like network,
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: you realize that value exists in a different kind of way.
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: And what matters now is how how I used to
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: treat people when I was in school. Like what matters
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: now is how I've treated people when I would come
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: back home to Georgia. Like because I live here now
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: now people can tell me about those experiences and it's
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: not a negative experience for them, And I'm like, damn, well,
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: that was just half the battle right now, I just
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: need to get smarter about what the hell I'm doing,
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: you know. So you know, your strong network and building
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: bridges is really what propelled me to get all these opportunities.
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: Now I'm looking at one or two deals every week,
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: like there's always something I'm I'm I got a good
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: group of people around me in different pockets.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: Everybody's good at something, you know.
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: So it's you know, I try to keep myself flexible
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: and not fill up my schedule too much. But at
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: the same time, I love what I'm doing because I'm
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: connecting people and I'm in rooms I want to be
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: in and things like that. But it wasn't it didn't
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: start out that way. I kind of had to get there.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: But yeah, when I look at deals, I'm trying to
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: figure out how to get in this deal without writing
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: a check first, But everybody coming they're already thinking about
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: how much I can write a check for, So right,
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: you gotta fight that battle a little bit.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: See, that's one thing I'll say in my career that
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: I was very cognizant of is using my brand as
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: my as my capital. And if I'm sitting here saying, hey,
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna endorse this young fledgling company, then hey, you
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: give me I don't know, fifty five thousand shares, which
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: is half a percent of your company, and I will
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: sit on the board and introduce you to all these
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: people I'm sitting in the meetings with you to get
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: you the capital that you desire because my name and
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: Mike gives you credibility, like having Champ Bailey associated with it,
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: having Richard Truman associated with it, gives you credibility to
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: get these rooms that you couldn't necessarily get into, these
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: conversations you couldn't necessarily get into without these names associated
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: with it. So that is value that's more than the
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: one hundred thousand dollars or one hundred fifty thousand dollars.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: And I'm gonna invest in your company. This is so
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: you give me those shares for me to make that impact.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: That's the same kind of impact. Appreciate you, Appreciate you, jamp.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: This went home. I'm sorry.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: I appreciated.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: I enjoyed this for you.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: Man anything, I appreciate what you've done for me.
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: Man, I reached out to you, and you ain't hesitate
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: one bit to reach back out and provide me what
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: I asked for. All I need now, all I need
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: now is my Richard Sherman jersey and we'll be good.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna send you a text. You send me the address,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: it'll be in the mail.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: Let's do it.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: Let's do it. I appreciate sending my champ. I want.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: I want the Denver one.
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: Don't worry when you when you send me my yoster,
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: you'll get yours.
