- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Tuesday the 30th of
- 0:16January and here we are. I hope you are going well.
- 0:20The the summer is racing its way through, but you've only got a
- 0:24month left and then things start to change.
- 0:27The seasons come bring us some cool, some changing foliage and
- 0:31the trees. Unless you're in the other half
- 0:33of the world, in which case it's all reversed and oh that sounds
- 0:36lovely coming into summer again. But no, we are enjoying a
- 0:40gorgeous, gorgeous summer down here and the Tasmanian
- 0:44Southlands, if that's even a thing.
- 0:47We continue with this story of David and Saul and their ongoing
- 0:52battle, and we know which way it's going to go.
- 0:54But neither of these folks do. It is all pretty dicey as Saul
- 0:59becomes increasingly desperate and David wonders whether he's
- 1:02going to be able to survive. But he knows that he has God on
- 1:06his side and saw thus the desperation knows that he does
- 1:11not have God on his side. So let's see what happens in
- 1:15this next chapter as we read together.
- 1:17First Samuel, chapter 21, David went to the town of Knob
- 1:32to see Ahimelech. The priest Ahimelech trembled
- 1:35when he saw him. Why are you alone?
- 1:38He asked. Why is no one with you?
- 1:41The King has sent me on a private matter, David said.
- 1:45He told me not to tell anyone why I am here.
- 1:48I have told my men where to meet me later.
- 1:51Now what is there to eat? Give me 5 loaves of bread and
- 1:54anything else you have. We don't have any regular bread,
- 1:59the priest replied. But there is the holy bread,
- 2:02which you can have if you're young men have not slept with
- 2:05any women recently. Don't worry, David replied.
- 2:09I never allow my men to be with women when we are on a campaign.
- 2:13And since they stay clean even on ordinary trips, how much more
- 2:18on this one? Since there was no other food
- 2:21available, the priest gave him the holy bread, the bread of the
- 2:25Presence that was placed before the Lord and the Tabernacle.
- 2:28It had just been replaced that day with fresh bread.
- 2:32Now Doeg, the Edomite Saul's chief herdsman, was there that
- 2:36day, having been detained before the Lord David asked Ahimelech,
- 2:42Do you have a spear or sword? The King's business was so
- 2:46urgent that I didn't even have time to grab a weapon.
- 2:49I only have the sword of Goliath, the Philistine whom you
- 2:53killed in the valley of Elah, the priest replied.
- 2:56It is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod.
- 2:59Take it if you want it, for there is nothing else here.
- 3:03There is nothing like it, David replied.
- 3:06Give it to me. So David escaped from Saul and
- 3:10went to King Achish of Gath. But the offices of Akish were
- 3:14unhappy about his being there. Isn't this David the king of the
- 3:19land? They asked.
- 3:21Isn't he the one the people honour with dances singing soul
- 3:26has killed his thousands and David his ten thousands.
- 3:31David heard these comments and was very afraid of what King
- 3:34Achish of Gath might do to him, so he pretended to be insane,
- 3:38scratching on doors and drooling down his beard.
- 3:41Finally, King Akish said to his men, Must you bring me a madman?
- 3:46We already have enough of them around here.
- 3:49Why should I let someone like this?
- 3:51Be my guest? Jesus, you break open the doors
- 4:06and offer us access, unmediated, to God.
- 4:11To you, our triune God, thank you that you and your sacrifice
- 4:18is enough to present us before the throne, perfect and able to
- 4:24be in your presence, able to be in the presence of your Father
- 4:28and the Spirit. We certainly don't feel worthy
- 4:31or holy enough to stand before you as we pray to you right now,
- 4:35but that is your gift to us, and so we thank you.
- 4:41We just shake our heads in amazement at all you have done
- 4:46for us. Thank you for your love.
- 4:50Thank you for making your way so that we can be with you.
- 4:56We love you and we lift you up and place you above every other
- 5:00name. It's in your name that we pray
- 5:02Jesus. Amen.
