- 0:16To love letters. Welcome to Love Letters from
- 1:05God. We have been reading some of
- 1:08David's psalms that he has written during all of the
- 1:13escapades in his life. We're not going to read any
- 1:18Psalms today, but we're going to read a little bit of the story
- 1:22about David toward the end of his life.
- 1:26He wanted to build a temple for God.
- 1:32He so much wanted to do that. And this is recorded in the book
- 1:40of First Chronicles, chapters 28 and 29.
- 1:48And turn with me there. And that's where we will begin
- 1:51reading now. David assembled at Jerusalem all
- 1:58the leaders of Israel, the officers of the tribes, the
- 2:06captains of the divisions who served the king, the captains
- 2:12over thousands and captains over hundreds, and the stewards over
- 2:18all the substance and possessions of the king and of
- 2:24his sons, with the officials, the valiant men, and all the
- 2:30mighty men of valor. Then King David rose to his
- 2:35feet, and he said, Hear me, my brethren and my people, I had it
- 2:43in my heart to build a House of rest for the ark of the covenant
- 2:49of the Lord and for the footstool of our God, and I had
- 2:54made preparations to build it. But God said to me, you shall
- 3:01not build a house for my name, because you have been a man of
- 3:06war and you've shed blood. However, the Lord God of Israel
- 3:13chose me above all the House of my Father, to be king over
- 3:18Israel forever. For He has chosen Judah to be
- 3:23the ruler, and of the House of Judah, the House of my father,
- 3:30and among the sons of my father. He was pleased with me to make
- 3:35me king over all of Israel and all of my sons, for the Lord has
- 3:43given me many sons. He has chosen my son Solomon to
- 3:50sit on the throne of the Kingdom of the Lord over Israel.
- 3:55Now he said to me, It is your son Solomon who shall build my
- 4:01house and my courts, and I will be his father.
- 4:06Moreover, I will establish His Kingdom forever if he is
- 4:11steadfast to observe My commandments and My judgments,
- 4:17as it is this day. Now, therefore, in the sight of
- 4:21all Israel, the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our
- 4:26God, be careful to seek out all the commandments of the Lord
- 4:32your God, that you may possess this good land and leave it as
- 4:38an inheritance for your children after you forever.
- 4:43As for you, my son Solomon, no, the God of your father, and
- 4:50serve him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind, For the
- 4:55Lord searches all the hearts and understands all the intents of
- 5:00the thoughts. If you seek Him, he will be
- 5:04found by you, but if you forsake him, you'll cast you off
- 5:09forever. Consider now, for the Lord has
- 5:13chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary.
- 5:19Be strong and do it. Then David gave his son Solomon
- 5:24the plans for the vestibule of its houses, its treasuries, its
- 5:30upper chambers, its inner chambers, and the place of the
- 5:34mercy seat, and the plans for all that he had by the spirit of
- 5:39the courts of the House of the Lord, of all the chambers all
- 5:44around, of the treasuries of the House of God, and of the
- 5:48treasuries for the dedicated things.
- 5:52Also for the division of the priests and the Levites, for all
- 5:57the work of the service of the House of the Lord, and for all
- 6:02the articles of service in the House of the Lord.
- 6:06He gave gold by weight for things of gold for all the
- 6:11articles used in every kind of service.
- 6:15Also silver for all the articles of silver by weight for all the
- 6:20articles used in every kind of service.
- 6:24The weight for the lampstands of gold.
- 6:27The lamps of gold by weight for each lampstand and its lamps,
- 6:33for the lampstands of silver, by weight for the lampstand and its
- 6:38lamps, according to the use of each lampstand and by weight.
- 6:43He gave gold for the tables of the showbread for each table,
- 6:48and silver for the tables of silver.
- 6:51Also pure gold for the forks, the basins, the pitchers of pure
- 6:57gold, and the golden bowls. He gave gold by weight for every
- 7:02bowl and for the silver bowls, silver by weight for every bowl,
- 7:07and refined gold by weight for the altar of incense, for the
- 7:13construction of the chariot, that is the gold cherubim that
- 7:18spread their wings and overshadowed the ark of the
- 7:22covenant of the Lord. All this said David, the Lord
- 7:28made me understand in writing by his hand upon me all the works
- 7:33of these plans. And David said to me, Son
- 7:37Solomon, be strong and of good courage, and do it.
- 7:43Do not fear nor be dismissed, for the Lord God, my God, will
- 7:49be with you. He will not leave you nor
- 7:52forsake you until you have finished all the work for the
- 7:57service of the House of the Lord.
- 8:00Here are the divisions of the priests and the Levites for all
- 8:05the service of the House of God, and every willing Craftsman will
- 8:10be with you for all matter of workmanship, for every kind of
- 8:15service. Also the leaders and all the
- 8:18people will be completely at your command.
- 8:22And that's First Chronicles chapter 28.
- 8:27Notice that Solomon or David, he's got everything prepared,
- 8:32all every detail is there and he's passing it on to his son
- 8:37Solomon. Let's go into chapter 29.
- 8:42Furthermore, King David said to all the assembly, My son
- 8:46Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, is young and
- 8:52inexperienced, and the work is great, because the temple is not
- 8:58for man, but for the Lord God. Now for the House of my God, I
- 9:05have prepared with all my might, gold for things to be made of
- 9:10gold, silver for things of silver, bronze for things of
- 9:16bronze, iron for things of iron, wood for things of wood, Onyx
- 9:23stones to be set, glistening stones of various colours, all
- 9:30kinds of precious stones, and marbled slabs in abundance.
- 9:36Moreover, because I have set my affection on the House of my
- 9:39God, I have given to the House of my God over.
- 9:44And above all that I have prepared for the Holy House my
- 9:50own special treasures of gold and silver. 3000 Talents of gold
- 9:58of the gold of over 7000 talents of refined silver to overlay the
- 10:04walls of the houses, the gold for things of gold, and silver
- 10:09for things of silver, and for all kinds of work to be done to
- 10:14the hands of Craftsman who then are willing to consecrate
- 10:20himself. The state of the Lord.
- 10:23Then the leaders of the Father's houses, leaders of the tribes of
- 10:29Israel, the captains of the thousands and of the hundreds,
- 10:34with the officers over the King's work offered willingly.
- 10:39They gave for the work of the House of God 5000 talents and
- 10:4610,000 derricks of gold, 10,000 talents of silver, 18,000
- 10:54talents of bronze, 100,000 talents of iron, and whoever had
- 11:01precious stones gave them to the treasury of the House of the
- 11:06Lord, into the hand of Jehiel the Gershenite.
- 11:12Then the people rejoiced, for they had offered willingly,
- 11:17because with a loyal heart they had offered willingly to the
- 11:22Lord. And King David also rejoiced
- 11:25greatly. Therefore, David bless the Lord
- 11:28before all the assembly. And he said, Blessed are you,
- 11:34Lord God of Israel, our Father, forever and ever.
- 11:39Yours, O Lord God, is the greatness, the power and the
- 11:45glory, the victory and the majesty, For all that is in
- 11:50heaven and in earth is yours. Yours is the Kingdom, O Lord,
- 11:57and you are exalted as head over all.
- 12:01Both riches and honor come from you, and you reign over all.
- 12:08In your hand is power and might, in your hand it is to make great
- 12:15and to give strength to all. Now therefore, our God, we thank
- 12:21you, and we praise your glorious name.
- 12:25But who am I and who are my people, that we should be able
- 12:31to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from You,
- 12:38and excuse me, and of your own we have given you.
- 12:46For we are aliens and pilgrims before you, as were all our
- 12:52fathers. Our days on earth are as a
- 12:55shadow and without hope. O Lord our God, all this
- 13:01abundance that we have prepared to build you a house, for your
- 13:04holy name is from your hand, and it is all your own.
- 13:11I know also, my God, that you test the heart and have pleasure
- 13:17in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of
- 13:22my heart I have willingly offered all these things, and
- 13:27now with joy I have seen your people who are present here to
- 13:32offer willingly to you, O Lord God of Abraham and of Isaac and
- 13:38of Israel, our fathers, keep this forever in the intent of
- 13:43the thoughts of the heart of your people, and fix their heart
- 13:49toward you. Give my son Solomon a loyal
- 13:53heart to keep your commandments and your testimonies and your
- 13:58statutes to do all these things and to build the temple for
- 14:02which I have made provision. Then David said to all the
- 14:07assembly, now bless the Lord your God.
- 14:13So all the assembly bless the Lord God of their fathers, and
- 14:17they bowed their heads and prostrated themselves before the
- 14:22Lord and the King, and they made sacrifices to the Lord, and they
- 14:27offered burnt offerings to the Lord on the next day. 1000
- 14:32bulls, 1000 Rams, 1000 lambs, with their drink, offerings and
- 14:39sacrifices and abundance for all Israel.
- 14:44So they ate, and they drank before the Lord with great
- 14:47gladness on that day. And they made Solomon the son of
- 14:51David king the second time, and anointed him before the Lord to
- 14:57be the leader, and Zadok to be the priest.
- 15:01Then Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king instead of
- 15:06David his father, and prospered, and all Israel obeyed him.
- 15:12All the leaders and the mighty men, and also all the sons of
- 15:16King David, submitted themselves to King Solomon.
- 15:21So the Lord exalted Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all
- 15:26Israel, and bestowed on him such royal majesty as had not been on
- 15:33any king before him in Israel. Thus David, the son of Jesse
- 15:40reigned over all Israel, and the period that he reigned over
- 15:44Israel was 40 years, Seven years he reigned in Hebron, 33 years
- 15:51he reigned in Jerusalem. So he died in a good old age,
- 15:57full of days and riches and honor.
- 16:00And Solomon his son reign in his place.
- 16:04Now the acts of King David 1st and the last, indeed they're
- 16:08written in the book of Samuel the Seer and the book of Nathan
- 16:12the prophet in the book of Gad the seer with all his rain and
- 16:17his might and the events that happened to him, to Israel and
- 16:22to all the Kingdom of the land. And so goes chapter 29.
- 16:32There's something there's something to note here,
- 16:36particularly in chapter 29, David made provision for the
- 16:48temple that Solomon would build. David knew that Solomon was
- 16:56young and inexperienced, and the work was very great.
- 17:07So the king gathered the people and all of the necessary things
- 17:14to do the building material. And after the collection of all
- 17:21these things, David offered 1000, or rather a beautiful
- 17:26prayer. And that prayer is what we read
- 17:30in First Chronicles 29. In that prayer he says, Yours, O
- 17:38Lord, is the greatness, the power, and the glory.
- 17:45Yours is the Kingdom, O Lord, and you are called as head over.
- 17:53All this should remind us maybe some of the Lord's Prayer.
- 18:01Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
- 18:06That's in what we call the Lord's Prayer.
- 18:09David recognized that his Kingdom really wasn't his, it
- 18:16was God's. And This is why, the chronicler
- 18:23said then Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king
- 18:30instead of David, his father. The throne wasn't Solomon's, it
- 18:37was God's. Peace comes to you and me when
- 18:42we recognize what belongs to God.
- 18:47We should acknowledge to the Lord that all we are and all we
- 18:54have are from Him. And with that kind of a spirit,
- 19:01we will find a greater reliance on the Lord and the presence and
- 19:08peace that comes from Him. Shall we pray?
- 19:13Our Father in heaven, we're so thankful for all you have given
- 19:19us. We're thankful for the abilities
- 19:22you give us. We're thankful for what we can
- 19:25do to pass on to those coming behind us.
- 19:29Help us to recognize that everything comes from You and
- 19:34you are so blessed that you grant us the time and the
- 19:39opportunity to be the influence on those that come after us.
- 19:45And we pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
