- 0:47This episode of The Boundary Corner podcast is dedicated to
- 0:51the memory of our friend and hokey, Brian Wilkerson.
- 0:55We lost Bride on Tuesday of last week.
- 0:57And we both spent Saturday gathered amongst his many family
- 1:01and friends, remembering the good times and morning the
- 1:03thought of not being able to make more of them with them.
- 1:08Well, Brian spirit and our memories of him will never fade.
- 1:12Whether it was taking laps around our hometown, and it's
- 1:14Tahoe one times at Longwood. Although he never claimed, he
- 1:18went to Longwood. When the great times in
- 1:21Blacksburg, whether it be at hokey football games tailgates.
- 1:26Just roaming around. Fox Ridge.
- 1:29And I was lucky enough to have the pleasure of playing with
- 1:32them for five years. Playing football together, both
- 1:35in middle school and high school.
- 1:37Sometimes words just don't do a thing justice.
- 1:40So if you'll bear with us we're going to share a tribute from
- 1:44our good buddy. Jason long to a friend.
- 1:46He'd known since elementary school going to miss you be
- 1:49well. Now, back to the regular show
- 4:56Ryan, you got another pass interference call as Jason was
- 5:01playing at tribute to Brian Colts.
- 5:04Get another call. Y'all are in the, isn't that me?
- 5:07Say this one might be a zesty win tonight because we got the
- 5:09Colts in the Niners play in here.
- 5:11Yeah, Carson's made well questionable.
- 5:14Decisions to bank. So the only way The only one I
- 5:20disagree. We've ran the ball up and down
- 5:22the field on you. Draw, the Taylor's pushing 100
- 5:26yards, man. Well, he's just every the
- 5:31feelings I have is every time I looked up, it's a yellow flag
- 5:34for us but let's let's jump off that because we're going to
- 5:41probably interrupt enough of our things to my congratulations.
- 5:44Your Braves. Yeah.
- 5:46Bravo's World Series. Let's do this first time since
- 5:50you were how old I was 16. Yeah.
- 5:57I'm like that 1650 actually 50. Take that back 15.
- 6:01You're right now? Yeah, yeah.
- 6:04The first century, the Brave and he battles like how old was I 99
- 6:101699 was a great year and I tell you what those jerseys look
- 6:17dope. Yeah that would tissue.
- 6:22I mean I know I'm not, I'm not I'm preaching to the choir here
- 6:24but petition to make those and then a white version of those.
- 6:30Full-time uniforms and then we can have alternate space based
- 6:34off that whatever we want to do. It's true in some people.
- 6:38And I saw some people out there saying, nah, but you need to
- 6:41have innovate and I like, listen, you need Basics and you
- 6:45need to throw in the alternates, the up-to-date looks and stuff
- 6:48like that, you know, every now and then, but that was such a
- 6:53clean look. The orange number on the side,
- 6:57the block lettering, the maroon the right shade of maroon, no
- 7:02Stripes. Yeah, I said, I think that's the
- 7:04thing is that, you know, a lot of what was done then, I mean
- 7:09it's kind of the turn now, right?
- 7:12Like that clean. Look, I mean, that's coming
- 7:15back, it's not a flashy, you know, there's times for that,
- 7:20but I think the clean look is what's really really playing
- 7:24well right now and I think that that was as clean as it gets,
- 7:28man. Let me bounce.
- 7:29This idea off of you. If you had people who are out
- 7:31there like what you got to do something different, what about
- 7:34if the numbers were ho Keystone like keep them white, but get
- 7:39that outline of the Hokey Stones where we find with that, I'd be
- 7:43fine with that everything everything else keep the same.
- 7:47The I mean, the Hokey Stone numbers were the thing.
- 7:49I like the most about the current Jersey.
- 7:50So I guess, you know, if you, if that's the one thing you want to
- 7:54squabble about that, One thing I'm not going to push back on.
- 7:57That's what I'd say do when you pack do that with the letters
- 8:01and then get the white versions and essentially I would what
- 8:05would you say? Maroon maroon numbers, white
- 8:07jersey maroon numbers. Yeah, I mean tell Callie wants
- 8:14orange numbers we reached a liette tally ones orange
- 8:19numbers. At least he's not going to have
- 8:20a white and orange could pull my knowledge will look fine.
- 8:24And then make the Seven maroon seven, the number on the side of
- 8:27the maroon. Yeah.
- 8:29Make that maroon in those uniforms.
- 8:31I'm fine with that. Now, let's just say this, the
- 8:34team that took the field Saturday was the not the
- 8:38nineteen ninety, nineteen and man, lot going on yesterday with
- 8:43us. But we found, we had the
- 8:45opposite of the miracle and Morgantown.
- 8:48We had the blasphemy and black Suburbans, what we had.
- 8:52And, you know, everybody is probably going to to say you
- 8:55guys always crap on the offense. Ya'll say you prese defense.
- 8:59No. Yesterday was the defense's
- 9:03failure. If you told us that we got 34
- 9:08points because I'm going to, I'm going to give the defense there
- 9:11too, right? Give them there because that was
- 9:14a heck of a play that was primarily defensive starters out
- 9:17there. If you told us we got 34 points
- 9:20yesterday from the offense, defense chipped in a safety.
- 9:24We win this game. If you told me, we got 4 and 24
- 9:28touchdowns. Two field goals.
- 9:30Out of felt really good about our chances to win that football
- 9:33game. And it wasn't enough.
- 9:37And you know, as me and Brian were on the road, we were
- 9:40listening to the radio broadcast pretty much from Richmond all
- 9:44the way back to our hometown and Brian.
- 9:48It sounded like to me like, the defensive line was in trouble.
- 9:53They were making mistakes. And, you know, you mentioned
- 9:57you, what? I watch the tape.
- 9:59My eyes aren't the best. To me, it looks like, you know,
- 10:01they did have some troubles, he got pushed around some and they
- 10:04work. Fishing tackles for losses, in
- 10:05sacks. But you looked a little deeper
- 10:08looked at more than I look to condensed.
- 10:10I know you got a little deeper and found the full version.
- 10:12What did you see? Because you said it wasn't as
- 10:14bad as you thought it was going to be.
- 10:17It wasn't as bad as it sounded initially.
- 10:19It was still not not, they're definitely not their best
- 10:22effort. Probably one of the worst
- 10:23efforts of the year, but it wasn't the the clown show.
- 10:27I was anticipating, they did get pushed out of their gaps, a
- 10:31good, a good amount that did result in.
- 10:34Bigger Rush, Lanes, making it harder for the linebackers,
- 10:38making it harder for the safety's coming up in their
- 10:39fields, but they did a better job of getting after the
- 10:43quarterback, you know, a lot of what, you know, we did miss some
- 10:46tackles and that's something you got to clean up.
- 10:48But a lot of what happened is that Schrader just did a really
- 10:53good job of Getting through the pass rush Lanes.
- 10:58So, kind of creeping outside underneath the, the outside guy
- 11:03getting escaping the pocket and then just making plays with his
- 11:06legs. A lot of times on some of those
- 11:07pass plays that broke down and I think more than anything, it
- 11:12wasn't so much getting physically dominated.
- 11:14It was that over the course of this game.
- 11:17We saw depth show up again, right?
- 11:19We saw dep show up again and by the time we were kind of getting
- 11:24towards the end of Game that defensive line had had played a
- 11:28bunch of snaps and they just weren't quite bringing it the
- 11:30same way they were even though on the the ultimate touchdown
- 11:33play, we did have a big hit on the quarterback just before the
- 11:37ball went out there and Dorian strong Mystic by.
- 11:41Yeah I mean that was just that was just a bang-bang play in
- 11:45Dorian had some other when we will talk about during a little
- 11:47bit he had some other places where he probably didn't do his
- 11:51best effort but you know he was he was running step for step.
- 11:55Up there was just a well-thrown ball and yeah but you did the
- 12:00what you did. The one thing in man coverage
- 12:02you can't do I mean you let him get a little bit further behind
- 12:05you then you want yeah let's talk about the flask 342.
- 12:09We were going to do that a little later on this rundown but
- 12:11since you kind of brought it up and brought up the point they
- 12:14scored 14 points in the last you know and basically three minutes
- 12:17and 42 seconds and it was only about 40 for left on the clock.
- 12:22Yeah it was the depth and it Then we went back to last week
- 12:26about roster management about recruiting and bar.
- 12:32No, and Garbutt are good. Some of the guys on a defensive
- 12:35inside are good. Probably a few guys could be
- 12:41would be more of the third rotation, not the second
- 12:43rotation but since we're not that deep they're only they're
- 12:46up in the second rotation so you know you sit there and it's like
- 12:51those last three minutes what they With a nine-point lead,
- 12:56they go in just a couple minutes drive down, get it within 5, and
- 13:00then in about 45 seconds scored, including 45-yard bomb.
- 13:05And that's now the second time it's happened in the last every
- 13:09weeks and it's showing the depth and it's showing where we aren't
- 13:14haven't had the time to develop more defensive end and the three
- 13:18guys that could be potentially playing this year.
- 13:20All gone. Yeah, I think that's, that's the
- 13:24bigger thing is that, you know, you took a problem issue, and
- 13:27then, you can pounded it with with the three guys that had to
- 13:30transfer out for, you know, University related situation
- 13:35there. So it's very unfortunate.
- 13:38Like I said, it was a situation that we had already made pretty
- 13:42rough by the fact that we had Essentially one, I mean, in
- 13:48theory, we were coming into this year, you know, bar, no, not
- 13:53completely knocking it out of the park with one veteran
- 13:57defensive end. Yep.
- 13:59And a guy that changed positions and then a bunch of red shirt
- 14:03will technically going to be freshman, but he's a second year
- 14:07freshman, that was The Game Plan before these guys transferred
- 14:11out. And now Cole Nelson, who's a
- 14:13true freshman, it It's Jalen. It's Adams who had Barry got
- 14:19many steps in his career and there's no depth at that spot.
- 14:23And in those last those last four drives of the two games
- 14:27we've lost on last plays. You could see there wasn't it
- 14:32wasn't there. And that was a lot to go into,
- 14:35don't get me wrong. I mean you know, Syracuse even
- 14:39up to that point still had shredded us all day.
- 14:43I mean. Yeah.
- 14:44And the big thing, I say the other thing Beeline struggle
- 14:46with upfront was some of that setting the edge, especially on
- 14:51back side. There was a lot of cutbacks for
- 14:55Tucker. He had especially the one, not
- 14:59the one that went for the touchdown but but the other long
- 15:02run, he had was just a bad contain on the back side by the
- 15:05defensive end. So that's got to get better.
- 15:09You know, you got to understand your responsibilities there in
- 15:11the run and not over-pursue where they have those Lanes.
- 15:15To cut back and that was consistent throughout the day.
- 15:19There was drives where we did better with that and were able
- 15:23to force them off the field and there were some drives where we
- 15:25just couldn't and it's a yo-yo, right?
- 15:27It's a big-time yo-yo it was a yo-yo.
- 15:32We're not we're not used to it being quite as much of a yo-yo
- 15:35on defense this week. So this week we the defense was
- 15:38a yo-yo. We're used to the offense being
- 15:39somewhat of a yo-yo. Yes, we are.
- 15:42They still were not. They still were Our alert you
- 15:46guys watch the game, but we're not used to the defense doing
- 15:52this. And this was one where the the
- 15:54offense had picked them up most of the game, and they weren't
- 15:57able to do it late. And I think the defense that was
- 16:00just gassed. And, you know, that's not an
- 16:03excuse that the staff should have been preparing them for
- 16:07those situations. I mean, at some point, you've
- 16:09got to figure out. I've got to have the legs and
- 16:12the bodies and the opening to get this done at the end of
- 16:17games. It's true.
- 16:19Brian something you talked about, is you talk about time of
- 16:22possession on Wednesday night and that was pretty.
- 16:24Fair 31 to 28 pretty much. It was almost a 31:29 type thing
- 16:30so that was kept in contained. But we just look up and down.
- 16:33I mean the stats I mean, on third and fourth down they went
- 16:3711 of 20. They went over 50% because they
- 16:40were converting in 444 on forth which weird Dreadful 12:15 for
- 16:45the You're awful dog. Shit.
- 16:48What doggy and then just in general, 550 total yards.
- 16:55They averaged seven, a carry Garrett Schrader.
- 16:58Put over to 36 where he had been averaging, like, 170.
- 17:03We didn't force any turnovers, you know.
- 17:07It's it was literally the worst game, the defensive played all
- 17:10year and wasn't it was we'd probably say what a see game.
- 17:16And up into the last few minutes and then it went from a c to a
- 17:20d-minus. But just a few days and I know
- 17:23something you were telling me a little bit earlier that you were
- 17:26assuming to see the defensive line, have their struggles, but
- 17:30we looked at the safety stats and it was like well seem like
- 17:32just a few were cleaning up. The messes not the case between
- 17:35the safety and the linebackers worse or better than a defensive
- 17:39line. For the years, I'd say
- 17:41linebackers about what I expected when I looked at the
- 17:44tackles a lot of Apps lot of not really seeing where the ball was
- 17:51going and this kind of the same with safeties.
- 17:55Let's take a look at Sean Tucker's big 4th and 1
- 17:59touchdown. Run Nasir people's jumps inside
- 18:02and he didn't need to 2 ax head that Gap.
- 18:04But yeah, he's hanging around inside and all of a sudden, cut
- 18:08back Lanes, there, nobody's outside and it goes for six.
- 18:12You know what that looked like that looked like Carolina last
- 18:15year. Yeah, when he couldn't find the
- 18:17right gaps, and they were just hitting the wide open gaps from
- 18:20massive gains, and that backside of below-average game, Tisdale
- 18:26had had a pretty, he had his day was very up and down, he was
- 18:29either making a play or he was completely out of position.
- 18:32And again reminds you a little bit of last year and we hadn't
- 18:36seen a game like that from this defensive unit in the second and
- 18:40third level until this week. And I don't know if it was
- 18:44having the Out rushing attack from both the running back and
- 18:48the quarterback had did it or the fact that offensive line.
- 18:54Sorry fact, that the offensive line wasn't sorry.
- 18:56The running game wasn't just a product of the talent in the
- 18:59backfield but also from the offensive line that was a solid
- 19:02offensive line combined with the fact, they had a very talented
- 19:06running back combined with the fact they had a quarterback that
- 19:08could run the ball well, and did he 174 on the ground?
- 19:12For great Shader, he almost average a to carry Tucker did
- 19:15what Because Tucker kept them around in the first half, and
- 19:20then, Schrader completely took over the second half.
- 19:23Yeah, I told you the other day, I feel for Tucker, having this
- 19:27type of season, his sophomore here, not his junior year
- 19:32because if he would put up these numbers and it was next year,
- 19:35people would be talking about him in at least the first three
- 19:38rounds in. Hopefully, for that kid, you
- 19:41know, even though he is at a different school, I hope that he
- 19:43continues to success this year. In the next year.
- 19:47But we played with this point, he can do whatever he wants to
- 19:49now exactly thing, buddy. I'll just run something, we
- 19:53thought that we wouldn't see it all now he was just under 50%,
- 19:58please put 236 yards up and you know quite a few of those yards
- 20:03came in the last few drives when we needed the pass rush and even
- 20:08a couple of the passing touchdowns earlier our Corners
- 20:12just didn't look right and I do not have a wall or out.
- 20:14There is a big thing. Especially and this is what you
- 20:17call a good offensive coordinator.
- 20:20As we were driving down the road yesterday.
- 20:22How many times brine in? Just the course of about 15
- 20:26minutes? Did we hear all they're going
- 20:28for wide here? Essentially, we can run the
- 20:31ball. We're going to stretch you out
- 20:33and even though they passed and we broke up a couple of those
- 20:35plays later in the game. When they were going for Five
- 20:38Wives to play catch-up no Waller there, we had to put them in
- 20:43experienced guys, playing Corner putting Jamari out on the island
- 20:46and Corner Corners had what up. I mean, average.
- 20:52It wasn't great. No, it was, it was it was very
- 20:55much yo-yo. There was either they were doing
- 20:58100% what they needed to do or they just kind of look a little
- 21:02lost. There was times when Connor was
- 21:04out of out of position and coverage was late, kind of
- 21:09reading what the what the receiver is doing in man, not
- 21:12just not getting there on time, there was a couple times where
- 21:15Armani Chapman was kind of laid on the break.
- 21:18There was one. There was like a A deep come
- 21:22back, that was throw away outside and it hung out there
- 21:26and I was like, surely that's going to be a pig but Chapman
- 21:29was about half a second late and didn't get his paw in there and
- 21:33it ended up being a good completion for a first down.
- 21:37And that was kind of indicative of how the, how the passing game
- 21:39went for them. It was balls that were sometimes
- 21:43questionable but they got there. And then there was balls that
- 21:46were very much 50/50 and we just weren't winning the battles.
- 21:49And sometimes, It was the corner, just not getting their
- 21:51head around. Even when they were in position
- 21:53and sometimes it was just not one in enough.
- 21:56It seemed like. And then, of course, we had the
- 22:00one that broke the broke the camel's back there at the end,
- 22:02which I mean, we were up. We want to cover one, but you
- 22:06made it a point to me when I hit you up earlier.
- 22:09And you just kind of said where they were on the field and how
- 22:13they were moving the ball either.
- 22:15They were going to in the time they had left, you said either
- 22:19they're going To nickel and dime you, if you play zone, they're
- 22:23going to be able to run, they're going to be able to pass short
- 22:25passes. Or you're going to have to play
- 22:30covers one cover 0, give them nothing put a smile on a
- 22:34quarterback and say you're not getting past here because you
- 22:38can't kick a field goal. Past here.
- 22:42And that's what it was. It was the yet you watching.
- 22:45It wasn't if it says eight-point game if your hand is like Nickel
- 22:50Dime has but instead you have to go to that because of the
- 22:54situation. Well it's the failure on the
- 22:57third and fourth down to get them off the field and then the
- 22:59failure on the next play to contain the screen to Tucker
- 23:03that went for another long first down that kind of set things up
- 23:07in motion, right? So if you're if you're able to
- 23:10get off the field, Field there, you're able to let them keep the
- 23:13clock running if you're a like if you just do some of those
- 23:16little things that either bleeds more clock or gets them off the
- 23:21field and you don't get into that situation.
- 23:23But once you're at the 45-yard line because that's when it gets
- 23:27difficult to call the defense because they do have just enough
- 23:31time where if they get a first down, they can clock.
- 23:34If they still got a chance to kick it, you get a little
- 23:37aggressive and you say, all right, we're going to try to Or
- 23:40that a little bit, bring a little noise and it doesn't get
- 23:45home in time. And their receiver has about a
- 23:49half step on our corner and that's all it takes.
- 23:53That is all it took to essentially finish the game
- 23:57because with 20 seconds left, it was, it was not going to happen.
- 24:01I mean, we somehow got a bomb into the end zone to just have a
- 24:05prayer there at the end. I mean, that was a, it was a
- 24:08big, big nut throw by by Bragg's.
- 24:10In this side, the 15 to kind of get us in a position there.
- 24:16We could at least take a shot but you know all you don't want
- 24:21in the situation where you're up nine with under four minutes
- 24:25left, you shouldn't be in a situation where you're throwing
- 24:28Hail Marys at the end of the game to even have a chance.
- 24:31It's true. Well, even, even let's go back
- 24:33to earlier. The probably the biggest one,
- 24:37that kind of kept them in this game is And we'll talk about the
- 24:41offenses failures on this, but Peter more kicks a wedge that
- 24:46thing flips back to the 3-yard line.
- 24:50The safety false start gets them back to the 1.
- 24:54And then they go on a 98 11, play a 98-yard, 11 plays for a
- 25:00touchdown even though yes we did block the kick and they did not
- 25:04tie it. But at that point in time as
- 25:08we're listening and hearing the game Flow me and you immediately
- 25:11say if we get to 21 They can't run the ball anymore.
- 25:18They can't run the ball effectively.
- 25:22The essentially you're able to sit in your zones and say, you
- 25:25know, if you run you're going to get four yards.
- 25:27If you pass, you're going to have to hit your spots.
- 25:30And essentially, we're going to make this game longer because
- 25:32we're up and eventually straighter probably would have
- 25:35made a mistake. But when you have that drive
- 25:37happening, get them right back in the game.
- 25:39You know, we did get them down on but you felt like there were
- 25:44times just watching it right now.
- 25:46Ron, we could have been up 14:21 without blinking.
- 25:51Yeah, we Yeah, it seemed like the the defense just couldn't
- 25:56make enough plays to to get us in that situation and then when
- 26:01the offense did have some opportunities with short fields,
- 26:04we just failed to capitalize even though the offense overall
- 26:08had some really good drives in this game.
- 26:10Yeah. Sometimes when they were gifted
- 26:12short Fields they didn't do a whole lot with them.
- 26:14Well, they were there were really in the beginning of the
- 26:17game. There were two, right?
- 26:20One is immediately after Hey. Immediately after the touchdown,
- 26:28we Fort, they Defense Forces, one of the three and outs and
- 26:33then we get it down to the tech. You know?
- 26:36We break it down to the Syracuse 45.
- 26:41It was the play where they tried the double reverse to Trey.
- 26:45That completely screwed that in. I'm sure Brian.
- 26:48Remember the plate? We were sitting here.
- 26:49Like what the bleep did you do that for?
- 26:52Like, why would you like, you know, it's second down and it's
- 26:568:00, you're moving the ball with not doing any sort of
- 26:59trickeration, right? Yep.
- 27:02And then they do that. Get way backed up.
- 27:04We blow the opportunity there to that was right after lectures.
- 27:09Big screen where you kind of picked it up off the turf almost
- 27:12and yeah, took it 30 yards. Exactly turn around on second
- 27:17down and eight especially the way we were running the ball
- 27:20pretty consistently there. Yeah, it made no sense to do
- 27:25that. If you had all of the month,
- 27:28when you watch that play today, it was a QB lead playwright with
- 27:32the with the with essentially rotten and then going and then
- 27:35flipping it. If you looked at that and you
- 27:37look at that angle today, There were there were holes.
- 27:41Yeah. If that's where you know it's a
- 27:44trick play because if that's a read and he didn't see that
- 27:47pulled the kid out but then Braun, we defense holds again,
- 27:51it's another three and out this time again we get the ball like
- 27:56near Midfield lose. Two yards on again that set up
- 28:01the 98-yard play you had two drives Midfield nowhere to go
- 28:06you stall you wrote it was another one where you had a good
- 28:09First down play, and then you negated it with the negative
- 28:13second down play. Then he had the sack on third
- 28:15that puts you in negative yardage for the drive there, it
- 28:20just it it's those little things.
- 28:22And again we're not going to hammer the offense.
- 28:24The offense especially the running game overall was better
- 28:30as good as we've seen all year. This is what we kind of expected
- 28:34from day one. So I'm not going to give them
- 28:35too much of a clap on the back. This is what we should have been
- 28:38experiencing all. Year, especially against this
- 28:41defense and they had a pretty ever pretty good running.
- 28:43Run rush defense but you know, I'm glad that we've had a
- 28:47commitment to the Run. We should have had a commitment
- 28:49to the run. When we have a quarterback that
- 28:52has some of the limitations that Braixen has, if you're not
- 28:54committing to the run, you are doing him a disservice, you're
- 28:58doing an absolute disservice and then you have malachite Thomas
- 29:03Freshman who comes in and goes for over 150 yards, close to
- 29:12close to 200. Actually, 200 all-purpose yards,
- 29:16well over that. And two big runs 11 went for a
- 29:20touchdown, but you still sit here, Brian and it's got to be
- 29:24questioned because of this coaching staff, right?
- 29:27It happened with Hendon, hooker in 2019, And in the press
- 29:31conference, we listen to his like, well, he had done some
- 29:34good things in practice. If he's doing things like that
- 29:36in practice, he should have been the starting running back
- 29:40Carolina, not six games into the season.
- 29:44Yeah. So again it's this I mean in he
- 29:50runs hard, he has Vision right there were a couple times.
- 29:54You can see him in those things. He was waiting.
- 29:57Developing a whole found the whole, hit it.
- 29:59Now and what Herbert? Yeah, but did you notice how
- 30:06much more we're running inside? The tackles in this game?
- 30:10It was much less of the outside Zone, a lot more inside, a lot
- 30:16more counter inside counter a lot more power, a lot more trap.
- 30:22I'll be there, were there were a bunch of bunch of things going
- 30:24on inside that we haven't seen a whole lot of all year.
- 30:28So getting that, Out there was nice because I feel like the
- 30:32strength of how we would our running game is now in the
- 30:35interior. So finally focusing on that is I
- 30:40think what paid part of the dividends now.
- 30:41There were still some, some questionable things on the
- 30:44offensive line this week. You know, past Pro was not
- 30:49great, Braixen didn't have a whole lot of time.
- 30:53Tackles are still very hit-or-miss in pass Pro.
- 30:56Luke 2 Nu du is Is looking better but still is having some
- 31:04of the same types of things that we've seen you know, last season
- 31:09where they would be the snap. Sorry just whatever reason it
- 31:14sole situation, right? Yep.
- 31:18So we're still dealing with that and that that's obviously not
- 31:21helping Braxton as much as it could.
- 31:24But this was a much better overall game from the offensive
- 31:27line than we've seen in the last few weeks.
- 31:30And some of that was actually because the calls played into
- 31:34their strengths. Let me ask this Braun.
- 31:36Did you when you were watching, did you notice what were the
- 31:39combos looking like yesterday? Like what was it was?
- 31:44It always Luke. Let it gets Brock Caton stylist.
- 31:48Or do we do we pick some things up on the line.
- 31:52It was, It was kind of mixed up throughout the game.
- 31:54They did, they did some different things and I've seen
- 31:57but it was kind of A little bit of there was more pulling
- 32:03interior than kind of the the pull and wrap that we've seen
- 32:07with some of the offense that we've seen from the from the
- 32:11previous week. So I think that was a little bit
- 32:15of a change and it kind of, I think it helped them out a
- 32:17little bit with getting up inside the tackles there.
- 32:21Got you. Also yesterday, Raheem
- 32:24Blackshear goes over 100, all-purpose with the big screen
- 32:28catch, and then average and 7.8 on the ground for 78 yards.
- 32:32Still not using them the way we, you really want to use some but
- 32:35at least getting involved in things that he does better.
- 32:42Yeah, I don't know what they're challenging here.
- 32:44Like we threw the red flag, but y'all recovered ahead of the
- 32:48first down. So what's the point?
- 32:50I don't know what he was. I don't we don't have the volume
- 32:56on with that we be explaining but you know but to see them
- 33:00again using Rahim in the screen game and some of the other
- 33:03things they do with him yesterday, you felt a little
- 33:07better. You still don't feel 100%
- 33:09because you feel like it's Talent, you've said it numerous
- 33:12times to me and other people Rutgers is getting more out.
- 33:16Got more out of this guy with a terrible staff that got fired,
- 33:19maybe that maybe the staff is worse and that's why they can't
- 33:22do it. Yeah, I mean, that's the point
- 33:25that I like to make is that, you know, you saw some of the things
- 33:27that we're hearing Blackshear did in 2018, right?
- 33:34PE only played four games in. 19.
- 33:39And in those games he did a lot of you did a lot from the slot,
- 33:42he had a if you extrapolated his stats from those four games out,
- 33:47over a full 12 game slot you know he'd be just under 1,000
- 33:51yards, receiving so when you think about that and then you
- 33:57think about how we're using. I'm not saying I want him in the
- 33:59slot all the time but I do think that we need to do more with him
- 34:02in the passing game then just what two Targets.
- 34:05One. 30 yards? Yeah, absolutely.
- 34:11They you don't Someone doesn't quite understand how to use
- 34:16them. Now, something that was said and
- 34:20you tell me how big of an impact, this would have said in
- 34:23the interview went day and maybe this is why the defense didn't
- 34:27play good and the offense played better, but went day.
- 34:32Did not run the scout team offense this week against the
- 34:34defense. He ran, he was, he had a lot
- 34:38more time in the meeting rooms with the offense in general.
- 34:42Could you see some of the plays especially like, how they were
- 34:45reusing the HVAC a little bit more pudding, Gallo in, but just
- 34:49watching some of the place today, I feel like it was
- 34:54something different and I don't know how big of an impact.
- 34:57The head coaching come in for one week and make that big of a
- 35:01difference. Well, I think when you when it
- 35:05comes to the game planning side of things of how initially out
- 35:09the gate, they're they're planning on attacking the
- 35:12defense. I think that's where it makes
- 35:14the most. And I think when you talk about
- 35:16practice, I think some of that is the Intensity and attention
- 35:22to detail that probably Fuente brings to.
- 35:24It that seems like Brad cornelison does not really grasp
- 35:28and that attention to detail matters.
- 35:32That attention to detail matters.
- 35:35I mean there were there were times that I mean, I in college,
- 35:40I had a head coach that ran the offense.
- 35:41So I never experienced this. Well, I had my head coach was,
- 35:47was blowing the whistle. Do it again?
- 35:51My head coach was calling us a clown show, if we screwed it up
- 35:55and we were running it until we got it fucking right, and then
- 35:59we'd run it another time to make sure that we got it right.
- 36:03And that reflected on Gameday, we knew what the hell we were
- 36:06doing. We executed and we put up a
- 36:11bunch of fucking points show did.
- 36:14And at some point, I mean, again, the deficiency is either
- 36:18you didn't get, you haven't recruited the right players and
- 36:20develop them enough to run what you're trying to do or you're
- 36:24not scheming properly, to put them in the right positions to
- 36:27make those plays. Again, execution is a one-off.
- 36:32Excuse execution is not a weekly fucking thing.
- 36:35All right, let me ask this Prime.
- 36:37Do you if you are If you are, if you're just in for Wednesday.
- 36:49Do you continue to do what you did this week?
- 36:51Where you're defense played less?
- 36:53Because you're not running the scout team again.
- 36:54It's a pension detail, right? Or do you say the defense has
- 37:00enough Playmakers? If I put the often situations
- 37:03and get them to score, we can win a few games from here.
- 37:08Out. What do you want?
- 37:09I'm going to ask the question. Why does my head coach have to
- 37:12be on a field for us to have success?
- 37:14Whether it's offense or defense? Well that's why we created this
- 37:19scenario. Why we created a scenario where
- 37:22you are reliant upon the head coach for practice field to
- 37:27function as it needs to week-to-week.
- 37:30Yeah, it went talked about it last week with the staff.
- 37:37And six years in, it should be a, heck of a lot better guys
- 37:41should be moving on to bigger and better things and they're
- 37:45not the guy's a Marlin, Max citing Marlin.
- 37:49Matt, couple years gave you that fantasy pick up.
- 37:51People had to have. All right, Ryan will continue to
- 37:56say this and watching some of the Tennessee Alabama game.
- 38:01When I got home last night and seeing hinted hooker have a very
- 38:05good game. Alabama in Tuscaloosa against
- 38:09the saving defense. I've probably the most
- 38:11competitive Tennessee had been since Lanes game where Mount
- 38:16Cody blocked, the final second field goal to win it even though
- 38:21the Reflection In the End doesn't go that way because
- 38:24Tennessee start pulling their feet off.
- 38:26But bb10 420, I mean, he didn't break 200 yards, his big throws
- 38:33great there today, on the sidelines, that was his biggest
- 38:36third day. It wasn't a great throw, it was
- 38:38focused tables and his backside it was it was a decent through
- 38:43it. Got it was the best throw that
- 38:46he could make without It getting intercept.
- 38:51Yep, what I mean let's just say what he is.
- 38:54He's at best average how they game planned up until this week
- 38:59makes him below average. Where I got to believe you.
- 39:06Got to believe passing lies hidden.
- 39:07Would be much better in this offense.
- 39:12Yeah, and we've seen it right. We've seen him in.
- 39:16Be better in this offense. So I'm just I'm confused.
- 39:22I'm not so much confused of You know, why you made a play to
- 39:26keep Braxton? I'm more confused that you did.
- 39:30Make a bigger play to keep Hendon.
- 39:32Yeah. Like there wasn't a situation
- 39:36where you were out there doing everything you could to keep
- 39:39that guy in the building. Yep.
- 39:40It's true. Regardless, what happens, the
- 39:44stories that have come out like that guy had talent and it's
- 39:48showing you just don't go down at us.
- 39:51Clues against the saving defense regardless, if it's great or
- 39:54not, great in do what he did, especially in the first half and
- 39:58then keeping them in that game in the second half.
- 40:00So, Again, it goes back to our last week if you guys have not
- 40:06listened to last week's episode. If you can skip through the pit
- 40:09part and get to our assessment of the Five Pillars, you'll

- 40:55Now back to the episode All right, so guys, what we're going
- 41:00to do for the rest of the episode tonight is, we're going
- 41:02to give our staff evaluations by all means.
- 41:05If you want to chime in, feel free, to give your grade will
- 41:08say who it is and be grateful, throw it up on here, and we'll
- 41:12throw it up. So, here showing off of the
- 41:14world. Exactly.
- 41:15But let's start. Brian.
- 41:17I want to start with J Hamm and I'm going to jump on this one
- 41:21first. Because, okay, yesterday's game.
- 41:24I was bordering on b-plus. First year, first year of having
- 41:30it, the defensive played well, definitely depth is a concern
- 41:35but overall the defense was playing well I'm not going to go
- 41:38full letter grade back but now it's on the be - so he's
- 41:41probably sitting on the 8281 versus the 88 to 89 for me.
- 41:48After that game especially here in after the head coach was not
- 41:52run on the scout team, which, which was probably given him
- 41:55some help to be a young coordinator.
- 41:59Yeah, I won't be - and but before yesterday it was B+, what
- 42:02about you? Yeah, I'm going to give him a.
- 42:06I'm gonna go see. Plus I will like they dropped a
- 42:10full letter. I'd say overall we've done a
- 42:16really good job this year especially up until recently
- 42:20kind of slowing down the pass game for them for the other
- 42:23team. But I'm a little suspect on the
- 42:27The Rush defense and we're going to see more heavy rushing
- 42:31attacks with better offensive lines as we kind of close out
- 42:34the year here. Not that they're necessarily
- 42:37High Caliber in terms of the Elite Talent like a Notre Dame
- 42:40has at the running back position but I Take the whole workings of
- 42:45the team on offense might give us some problems, so that's
- 42:49going to be something to watch out for.
- 42:52And if we have another game, you know, a few more games like we
- 42:56had on Saturday, you know, that gray could go down a little bit
- 43:00more but Saturday kind of made me a little wary, just because
- 43:05I'd seen a little bit of that before this game, especially
- 43:10against pit when I was like they shouldn't be getting the edge
- 43:13like that. Shouldn't be getting the edge.
- 43:16Yeah. And then we saw some more stuff
- 43:17like that. This week, it's kind of trending
- 43:20in a direction. I'm not comfortable with long
- 43:24term and I'm hoping that we can, we can do some, do some things
- 43:28here to kind of change that up and get that going back in the
- 43:30right direction. All right, let's move to the
- 43:34other side of the balls coordinator and let's go to Brad
- 43:36cornelison. Brian.
- 43:38What grade are you giving him seven games into the season?
- 43:42This game, he moves up to a flat.
- 43:44I told e - he all he got out of the F into a d-minus for this
- 43:51week's effort, only but d-minus to me is still you need to get
- 43:55the fuck out of here. Yeah.
- 43:57Right because I mean, absolutely, you're going to be
- 43:59on academic probation and then you're going to be out of school
- 44:02if you just drop and he's all over the place, right?
- 44:07So, that's where we're at. D-minus for corn.
- 44:13And it really just goes back to the inconsistency in situational
- 44:17football and the inability to adequately.
- 44:23Get the players ready to execute week in week out and see Braun.
- 44:30I was at a d-minus before I wasn't going to fit.
- 44:33Well, I'm going to fail it yet. Well I'm going to fail it yet.
- 44:38It was trending that way, but I was going to move into D + until
- 44:44we heard the interview that basically Fuente was in the
- 44:46offensive room all week. And I I'm going to stick it a
- 44:52d-minus. I beg them near.
- 44:54Gave it an F because literally you had to pull the head coach
- 44:58in there to put this sort of game plan to again, you said it
- 45:03attention to details and things like that.
- 45:08All I can say is this if we continue to play like we did
- 45:13authentically, put up points, good drives more good than bad
- 45:17drives, less three and outs. I'm just going to go ahead and
- 45:22rack it up that 20 is in the room the whole time.
- 45:26And he is basically putting everything together and more
- 45:33than likely, it's more him than it is brass.
- 45:36Just Brad calling the plays, okay?
- 45:39All right, d - that is, you know, be miles across the board.
- 45:46All right, Brian? I'm gonna go Jack, Tyler next in
- 45:50the linebacker play, has been just okay.
- 45:52This year. Not great.
- 45:55Not Dreadful horrible. Last year when Tracy claeys was
- 45:59on an island trying to coach. I'm back to play any kind.
- 46:04Yeah. But I'm gonna give him just a
- 46:08just to see first year, a lot of different things he's having to
- 46:13go through even more. So the outside noise even more.
- 46:17So with the second year really true first year coordinator.
- 46:22So, you know, like you said, it's up and down.
- 46:26There's been times of linebackers have played really
- 46:28good, there's been times, there's been yuck moments.
- 46:31So all it all balances out to me to see.
- 46:35Yeah, I'm kind of I'm right there with you.
- 46:38I'm with the C-4 Jack as well and he's done some good things
- 46:42on the recruiting Trail early return so far too.
- 46:44Right, so I think the combination of that I think the
- 46:47combination of seeing some improvement especially some
- 46:50improvement. I know Tracy, claeys had never
- 46:54coached linebackers before but he was also a extremely veteran
- 46:57defensive coach. So I think, you know, he
- 47:00understood understood conceptually what that would
- 47:03take but Jack is And it seems an upgrade so far and I'm hoping
- 47:12that we continue to Trend in that direction.
- 47:15That's my hope. So, it's a good Trend but it's
- 47:18still not where it needs to be yet.
- 47:21Now we're upload. Just put it on the ground at
- 47:23Midfield. You guys got the ball up a
- 47:25point. So yeah, y'all get y'all get a
- 47:31touchdown here. This is pretty much game over.
- 47:37Let's go to. I like them Berg next run
- 47:38because this isn't okay, because you feel like yesterday might
- 47:42have turned a little bit. But what are you given?
- 47:46Atom, like, Timber go up to this point.
- 47:49I'm going to give him a C+ and a lot of that is tied to off the
- 47:56field stuff. I think, I don't know how much
- 48:00credit to give him for Khalil Herbert other than getting him
- 48:02in the building. But that's not because I mean,
- 48:08we saw what he did last year, we see that he's tearing it up in
- 48:11the NFL already. Now these got an opportunity the
- 48:13last two weeks. And really two and a half weeks
- 48:17going back to the previous game where he came in and it just
- 48:22seems like I'm not really sure how much his coaching is
- 48:28impacting the on-field product. But I know that he's getting
- 48:34some of the right players in the building to be successful.
- 48:39And I'm not sure who was holding back Malachi, Thomas you from
- 48:43getting on the field more stamps, whether it was him or
- 48:46whether it was Brad cornelison, or whether it was Justin Fuente,
- 48:50okay? So I'm not sure whether to ding
- 48:51him for not getting Thomas More carries earlier in the year or
- 48:55not. So right now, I'll stick with
- 48:58c-plus You're going to stick with C plus on it.
- 49:01Okay, I'm going to give him a beat - again.
- 49:05A lot of its the off-field stuff. you know I think without
- 49:10a doubt that is probably one of the bigger things, he is a good
- 49:14recruiter, he does have a good eye for talent, you know, he was
- 49:19a secondary on Malachi last year he brought in Herbert, he saw
- 49:22that tape so We're idiots in the back end now.
- 49:33Okay. Um, but also with Herbert, it
- 49:38was a year of consistency. We had seen Herbert's tape when
- 49:42you he could blow up, what it is like Timber got the consistency
- 49:47out of and that's why we're seeing it up there, whatever he
- 49:50said to him. The piece that I'm interested in
- 49:53is just what you are. If Malachi Thomas, who we heard,
- 49:57he had done some good things, but he was missing this That.
- 50:01If you have a guy like that and he's missing.
- 50:03Well, he's missing some past Pros, you should be banging on
- 50:05the table saying when we should be running the damn ball.
- 50:09A lot more than we should be in past Pro even though it might
- 50:13give away when he's not in there that we're going to potentially
- 50:16have more of a pass. The kid comes out once against a
- 50:19good defense like that. To the tune of 150 yards on 24
- 50:25carries averaging. Almost six of carry.
- 50:30You should be stepping up, slamming your fist on the table
- 50:33and saying, see I told you that thing, if we had those running
- 50:37backs in the West Virginia or the Notre Dame game so I give
- 50:41them a b-minus, still wish they would use him, right?
- 50:45But I'm a little soft on Adam That I Used to Be.
- 50:49Okay, fair enough. All right.
- 50:52So where we going next, man? Let's go next to.
- 50:56This is going to be a good one because it is all over the place
- 51:00Vance. Vice.
- 51:02If we're if we're just talking this year, give me a see.
- 51:07Okay, well the I'd say this year and recruiting this year, you
- 51:11still sticking with the sea. Still sticking with the sea.
- 51:14Okay. Why, why why not?
- 51:21You know, why not lower with this year?
- 51:24Because clearly in the offseason, he made some serious
- 51:29mistakes that hurt our depth. Why not lower?
- 51:35The recruiting has still been there and I think he was dealt a
- 51:44bad hand that he had a hand in somewhat creating because this
- 51:49season was going to be a little bit of a work in progress before
- 51:57two guys. Got ran off into other ACC teams
- 52:03will not ACC teams but Power five teams and I think we look
- 52:11like we made some ground up there.
- 52:12When we were using our current running backs the way they
- 52:16should and playing to the strengths of this offensive
- 52:19line. So you can't put as much on
- 52:21that. But I think that he's done a
- 52:24poor job with the rotations. He's that that's that's that's
- 52:28that's the one thing that I'm still frustrated with is that he
- 52:31has not figured out who is best 5r and you ran off to good
- 52:36players and we have been inconsistent at best both in the
- 52:41Run game, which I I'd expect and in the past game, which I 100%
- 52:45did expect, All right, I'm going to be a little harsher on him
- 52:50and I'm going to go with the D+ because running off to guys, who
- 52:55would have been key to depth would have significantly.
- 53:01Help this offensive line I think Doug Nestor would have started
- 53:04it right tackle I think Silas tansy would have started it
- 53:06Right Guard. I think Brian Hudson would have
- 53:08been your swing guy inside. Right, that that's that's that's
- 53:13accurate. That's one big strike that, that
- 53:16to me, where it takes him from like, potentially a C+.
- 53:19Or now you're down to a seat. The next one is, I still don't
- 53:25think he's putting the best five out there because my reality if
- 53:29you want to make the best file, especially running the ball.
- 53:31Johnny Jordan should be playing probably Center in Brock Hoffman
- 53:35should be at Right Guard. But again, Back to the other
- 53:40point. Why he, ran guys off is probably
- 53:43the same reason with this, and the whole goal should be get
- 53:48your best five out there. We know, Brock and plague.
- 53:51Our, we know we've done, Johnny complete, Margo your mixing, and
- 53:55your mixing and that's fine. I get you might need to give
- 53:58guys a breathers but give it a chance like this.
- 54:05Give that a chance and give that a chance in Fall Camp versus
- 54:12early. Do I think Kaden more is a nasty
- 54:14guy guard. Yes he is.
- 54:16Yes he is but he has some deficiencies because he is a
- 54:20freshman dip and you know it's one of those things to it's like
- 54:26dude you playing for your job this year.
- 54:29Well, what if he gets mad and I lose the line?
- 54:32What if you lose the line, you're probably going to be
- 54:34gone. Going anyway, if you don't put
- 54:35your best five out there. Yeah, and I've played in a
- 54:39situation where, you know, I've been one of the Swing guys in a
- 54:46six-man rotation. I know that sometimes you ride
- 54:52the hot hand and then sometimes it's a tree rotation and then
- 54:55sometimes it's a play to your strengths.
- 54:57So I get that aspect of it, but I'd like to see them play to the
- 55:01strengths of what's happening in the flow of the game.
- 55:04Mmmmm. Then just getting guys out there
- 55:08to get guys out there. Yeah, that's very true.
- 55:13All right, bro, we're going to pair these next two guys
- 55:15together because they essentially run the same line
- 55:18and that's JC price and beer, bill, till Nick and I'm going to
- 55:22give JC and Bill a solid be. Like you said, earlier, The Edge
- 55:28stuff with the rush defense, has not been the greatest.
- 55:31They are also working with the very limit They're also working
- 55:35with limitations on the outside because of depth but overall the
- 55:38defensive line has played well this year, not unbelievable but
- 55:43it's not been the true detriment to the defense.
- 55:47Even though yesterday they had their issues and on the last
- 55:51couple drives of several games, they've had their issues.
- 55:55But overall, this is also the second year of it.
- 56:00Yep, guys. They'd recruited to the system.
- 56:02Three on the defensive end. Left.
- 56:05So, you know, if you asked me today, I would want at least JC
- 56:14price to be on the next staff as one, you know, it usually
- 56:18happens. Usually don't see a complete
- 56:20gutting and everybody leaves. Usually one or two guys has
- 56:23remains on staff. I think if what's going to
- 56:26happen what we assume is going to happen, I'd like to see JC
- 56:29price stick around Yeah, I'd like to see JC price stick
- 56:33around and, and bills harder because Bill cost more and Bill
- 56:36doesn't give you as much on the recruiting Trail.
- 56:39True. So JC is the easier.
- 56:43Keep their, I'm going to give them a C+.
- 56:47Probably I could go be - I'm really kind of going between the
- 56:51two. I think given the limitations of
- 56:53their depth that is really nothing to do with them.
- 57:00I think they've done a really good job overall, they're still
- 57:03dealing with a their most elite player is a guy that switch
- 57:08positions and is, you know, more of a freak athlete than a true
- 57:14defensive Edge Presence at this point, but they're still getting
- 57:16a good amount out of him. He had a, he was a, he had an
- 57:19active game. The play that impressed me.
- 57:21Most is one of the one Schrader took off and he's walking him
- 57:26down from the back side. Yeah and yards downfield that's
- 57:31impressive and he doesn't give up on plays.
- 57:36He's always going that's a big thing for me and Garbutt has
- 57:40really turned into a really solid overall player at the
- 57:46defensive end position. And if we can clean up, just
- 57:48some of those technical things that we're seeing those two guys
- 57:53could really be, you know, some of the the top two out there in
- 57:58the ACC. So I think they're turning a
- 58:01corner a little bit but they're not quite there overall.
- 58:04Just the depth is killing them and that's hurting them.
- 58:07So I'm trying not to give them give that too much of a not for
- 58:11him. So I'll still go see plus like I
- 58:13said, I could go be - but they're kind of right there.
- 58:17Got it. All right, here's the next one
- 58:19for you. Brian.
- 58:20And this is going to be the really interesting one Jafar.
- 58:30I don't want to fail him but I might have to fail him.
- 58:35I might have to fail him. We just we haven't seen enough
- 58:40of the guys, he's bringing in. Take some steps.
- 58:45Most of the guys that are doing well, we're either already
- 58:50recruited before he was hired or we're already playing before he
- 58:53was hired very true. You know, we still have Tay and
- 58:58tray that are out there doing their thing.
- 59:00I haven't seen Significant jumps in game from, from Trey, from
- 59:072018 to. Now he's been just steady Eddie
- 59:10consistent. He was good at the gate and he's
- 59:13continued to be pretty good the whole way through.
- 59:16So, and the only thing I can say is that Jafar has that wide
- 59:22receiver core blocking, like a motherfucker.
- 59:28They are some good ass blocking wide receivers they are.
- 59:32They are they are. He definitely could be a
- 59:34consultant for the rest of his life making.
- 59:38I don't know, hundred thousand dollars a year.
- 59:40Just going around to Tween spring practice and fall camps.
- 59:45Just teaching wide receivers to block.
- 59:46I'm I'm giving him enough. Plus I'll give them a plus block
- 59:51the bonus but it's just, it's nothing.
- 59:54There you're not seeing like we're not seeing you made the
- 1:00:00point would pray and say they do their thing and they're about
- 1:00:04where they were when they got here, right?
- 1:00:08Yeah, that way when they got here, wide receiver was We've
- 1:00:11not seen Lofton, pay you Jones the other any other guy you want
- 1:00:17to mention briefly, come on and start making it big.
- 1:00:21And this is the year three. This is the year, you usually
- 1:00:24see. So if you tell me at the end of
- 1:00:26the season, hey Robinson was 1,000-yard receiver.
- 1:00:30Trey Turner, had 1,000 all-purpose yards between 650,
- 1:00:34700 yards through the air, and using him on jet sweeps and
- 1:00:38things like that, okay? Great, you're doing your job.
- 1:00:41It's the same old. And you know what?
- 1:00:45We went from Harlem and Wiggins to him, is kind of crazy, right?
- 1:00:52Because Wiggins had Ford in them who had good Seasons.
- 1:00:57They were known Commodities when you that were very solid and
- 1:01:00they came in all three of those guys in 16 exploded.
- 1:01:04Cam comes back. The next year, builds upon again
- 1:01:07in an 18 with a bunch of young guys, guys, Flash.
- 1:01:11Ash you know. Yeah, gate an 18 so ever since
- 1:01:16he got here it's just been doesn't feel like he's done
- 1:01:19anything and you know That's just the feel I got to give the
- 1:01:25f+ so. Alright.
- 1:01:28Next guys this is one I think we're definitely going to differ
- 1:01:31on James shall best the tight ends and special teams coach
- 1:01:35that man gets an A minus in my book.
- 1:01:38Okay, tell me why well, okay, first of all.
- 1:01:43What, let's, let's start going after John Parker Roman fixed,
- 1:01:46his short kick issues. Rome has been banging them.
- 1:01:51He'd bang to 48-yarder yesterday.
- 1:01:53I saw that kid could have been good from 58, maybe 60, all
- 1:01:56right, kick return, game, Malachi and Keyshawn, getting
- 1:02:03good averages. If you kick it short to us, you
- 1:02:06can pay somewhere between the neighborhood of 28 to 35 yards.
- 1:02:10Every time if not more Right. Yep, punt return.
- 1:02:15I think Taylor Robinson is getting up there to being the
- 1:02:18absolute best in the country. A 40-yarder yesterday and a big
- 1:02:24run back helped us out. Peter Moores are freshman.
- 1:02:28Kicker five-star. Oh wait I'll store kicker.
- 1:02:32Plenty his ass off. And I know it's one of those
- 1:02:36things where you dwell you know, we don't want to be punting a
- 1:02:39lot. Everybody needs a good partner.
- 1:02:43Everybody needs a good if you don't have a good punter, look
- 1:02:45at Syracuse. How many times they set us up
- 1:02:47inside with bad kicks? The other we're taking advantage
- 1:02:51of them. It would have been blowing the
- 1:02:53doors off of them versus losing the game.
- 1:02:57And then just think about how gallo and Drake played
- 1:03:00yesterday. When they truly let Gallo get
- 1:03:03into the HVAC position. Running game was better.
- 1:03:06Drink, caught a touchdown pass. Need to see more of that.
- 1:03:11If those guys were truly producing at a great clip, I'd
- 1:03:14probably get in the neck but right now sign of stymied but we
- 1:03:19are especially Gallo plan that HVAC position.
- 1:03:22Definitely seeing the moves there.
- 1:03:25Now, how much lower you going to me?
- 1:03:27Because I know you're not going higher.
- 1:03:30I'm gonna go be. It could be higher if we'd seen
- 1:03:34more from the HVAC since James Mitchell has went down.
- 1:03:41I think overall that he does a probably one of the better
- 1:03:47special teams coaches in the ACC, definitely has kept the
- 1:03:53tradition going with, with Beamer ball, with special teams,
- 1:03:58being a focus outside of last year in punt, return situations.
- 1:04:04I really don't have a ton of negative things to say about the
- 1:04:07special team since he's been here.
- 1:04:09And looking at this year, same, same story other than the short
- 1:04:13kicking it Use that drop, John Parker Romo, had in the first
- 1:04:17three games. I don't really have a big
- 1:04:19problem with with the Special Teams this year, I'd like to see
- 1:04:25more out of guys, not named James Mitchell.
- 1:04:28Since he went down in the HVAC roll, it seems like some of that
- 1:04:34has been game Flow. Some of that has been calls, so
- 1:04:37it's not all on him. But those guys haven't went out
- 1:04:41there and flashed as much as I was expecting them to flash
- 1:04:45since James Mitchell's went down so that's what kind of brings it
- 1:04:48down. For me a little bit, got it.
- 1:04:50Alright. Alright then, let's hit this guy
- 1:04:53up. Ryan Smith where you put in Ron
- 1:04:56Smith that Ryan Smith gets a B+ I'm solid b-plus.
- 1:05:04He's done some good things with the young guys that have come
- 1:05:07in. Killing it on the recruiting
- 1:05:09Trail. When he's got his best guy out
- 1:05:13there, you can tell. Yes.
- 1:05:16So and but he's brought the other guys along the younger.
- 1:05:21Guys along both last year and into this year a little bit
- 1:05:24faster than we anticipated, much fat and short of a few snafus
- 1:05:30here and They've held up against some pretty solid competition
- 1:05:33this year. I think, you know, you could
- 1:05:37there is room for improvement there, that's why it's not an a
- 1:05:40it so it's not a - but overall I like what Ryan Smith is
- 1:05:45bringing, I think he's probably other than JC price.
- 1:05:47The only other coach that I think probably gets retained by
- 1:05:51whoever the next staff is absolutely.
- 1:05:54Absolutely. And I think Ryan Smith is
- 1:05:57probably the biggest no-brainer on that just because of his age
- 1:06:00and the position and unless whoever is coming in as a
- 1:06:02defensive guy that wants to coach corners and exactly.
- 1:06:06And there's not many of those guys that move on to DC /.
- 1:06:11Hate head, coach positions. I'm with you on a B+ also.
- 1:06:16Funny fact, me and Brian went to college with Ryan sister.
- 1:06:23We did not know this. Until a few weeks ago, I'm
- 1:06:26friends with her own social media.
- 1:06:28I think Brian you are too and yep, it's all Pop up and I
- 1:06:31messaged him like, is that Ron Smith?
- 1:06:34Oh yeah. He's my brother's.
- 1:06:35Like, how did we not know this season?
- 1:06:37She was like, oh, he's just, he was significantly younger.
- 1:06:39When we were all in college, I'll make sense.
- 1:06:42This girl, friends with salad. Basically, every day in college
- 1:06:45is really funny, but it's a lot of the point you made is to
- 1:06:48recruiting. It's the younger guys Walter
- 1:06:51before he got banged, was kept playing better and better each
- 1:06:55week Jermaine Waller. We saw in 2019 who was out in
- 1:06:582020 returned in 2021. And look even better.
- 1:07:03And the difference between 2019 and 2020.
- 1:07:06One is Ryan Smith, he is a good recruiter, he is a young guy, he
- 1:07:10is a rising star. He should be retained in some
- 1:07:14capacity with the next head coach.
- 1:07:19Well, JC and Ryan. If you're taking both of them,
- 1:07:21you can kind of hit the ground running with the recruiting
- 1:07:24footprint that they've started to build.
- 1:07:26Yes. Since they've come on staff.
- 1:07:28So that, at least helps you potentially Retain the class
- 1:07:32that you have and get you your boots on the ground as soon as
- 1:07:37the new stabbed gets in place. Exactly, exactly.
- 1:07:41Alright Braun. Well we've done everyone.
- 1:07:43So let's go to the head ball coach.
- 1:07:46Where are you with Justin Fuente?
- 1:07:52I mean it's got to be a d - right for me it's a d-minus in
- 1:07:58the big thing goes is that he's not making changes to make the
- 1:08:02team better know that that's my big thing.
- 1:08:05When we look at the struggles, we've had with Brad for Nelson.
- 1:08:09When we look at a lot of the game Flow things.
- 1:08:15If we look at just an inability to make changes during the game
- 1:08:21when he sees things aren't going the way they need to, when we
- 1:08:26look at how he is as a recruiter.
- 1:08:30Yeah he is not a recruiter he does.
- 1:08:34Well when he gets Recruiters on his staff, very true but he is
- 1:08:38not a guy that's going to he's not Mack Brown he's not going to
- 1:08:41go in the living room and and get you a kid.
- 1:08:45He's not Frank Beamer. He's not going to go and 757 and
- 1:08:48get you a kid. Nope he's not that type of
- 1:08:51coach. It's got to be pretty much a
- 1:08:55close done deal when it get when the player comes into his office
- 1:08:58to get that final. Yay, or nay exactly.
- 1:09:03And you know and even then sometimes it's not a it's not a
- 1:09:07closed up shop there. So, exactly.
- 1:09:11I'm going to go D, not the D- it least this week, he noted
- 1:09:15finally took five games in noticed issues and decided to
- 1:09:19move himself from one part of the game planning and to another
- 1:09:23part of the game planning. And we did pay dividends on that
- 1:09:29D should have been gone after yesterday.
- 1:09:35Yeah, I do believe that because you are a reflection of what
- 1:09:39your team does and numerous time this year in situations, he has
- 1:09:45essentially failed his team and I know everybody can say well
- 1:09:49there's offense and there's all this key is the reflection of
- 1:09:52the team. How they how they perform these.
- 1:09:57You because it is a trickle down, you tell the offensive
- 1:10:01coordinators. What you want you to other
- 1:10:03defensive coordinators with they won't?
- 1:10:04They go down to their guys. If you're giving the wrong,
- 1:10:07message the wrong signals, the drawing Vibes.
- 1:10:10That's why there have been so many failures this year.
- 1:10:13You can see what his body language a few weeks ago in a
- 1:10:16Monday Presser You can see it yesterday.
- 1:10:19He did not walk out on the interview yesterday for he did
- 1:10:22not like that. Last question that was asked, I
- 1:10:25think by David Cunningham with textile on, he answered it and
- 1:10:29he walked away slipped, he looking pissed.
- 1:10:32But if that's how you carry yourself and your team sees it
- 1:10:35or hears about it, they're going to be similar to it.
- 1:10:39So yeah. Yeah, and I think that's the big
- 1:10:43thing is that he, he's almost to even Keel, right?
- 1:10:49He's to even Keel. And I think, when you, when you
- 1:10:54get to the bad body language, the bad body language is the
- 1:10:59start of the week and it carries on into the post game, right?
- 1:11:03Yeah, can't have that. I'm sorry, I'm celebrating over
- 1:11:07here. It's okay, it's so cool.
- 1:11:09You didn't get the to. So we're still up dudes, we
- 1:11:12still score, but it was also a fantasy score to.
- 1:11:15So now, I've put my projection, let me, let me just say I am now
- 1:11:20up, almost 50 points on the guy I'm playing.
- 1:11:23Yeah, but every every time young score, your defense points, go
- 1:11:27down down down because you started the Colts defense.
- 1:11:30Here's the thing. I went from 19.3 On defense. 218
- 1:11:35Debo went from 10 to 18 fair enough so your netting out
- 1:11:42pretty good. There you got out there.
- 1:11:43Yeah as long as he's the guy burning, I'm good.
- 1:11:47So anyway there's our staff evaluations as long with minors,
- 1:11:51Colts, talk fantasy talks, what we do here that you kind of go
- 1:11:56through it. There's only a couple guys above
- 1:11:59average, a lot of guys below average numerous D's and F's and
- 1:12:05you see the way things are trending.
- 1:12:08And as this season goes along, we're going to have more
- 1:12:10segments like this on Sunday nights where we've got some
- 1:12:13other ideas in our heads. Yeah, these two crazy heads so
- 1:12:19definitely check this in now Brian, let's look at the
- 1:12:22pickles, also, Brian. Let me say this.
- 1:12:25You actually, you do not get the number, right?
- 1:12:29But you almost nailed the spread right on the game with the
- 1:12:32Syracuse by For, you know, essentially Syracuse, you know,
- 1:12:38does eventually win the game yet 4136 so slightly off there?
- 1:12:42So, you had a good read on that, just not that many points now.
- 1:12:45On Saturday, pick them's You gained some Down, The Back in
- 1:12:51the Saddle. Again, the big guys, Back in the
- 1:12:55Saddle. Again, the big guys, back over
- 1:12:57500 again, Brian's back to 42 and 40.
- 1:13:01After a seven and three week. Brian nailed, the army, weight
- 1:13:06game, the FSU UMass game, the Clemson pit game.
- 1:13:13The Bama Tennessee game, okey State you at Notre Dame and
- 1:13:18Oregon. So you know the only games you
- 1:13:21essentially Miss were the three ACC games BC Lewisville.
- 1:13:26NC State Miami which I don't think anybody saw that coming
- 1:13:30and then we detect. Got you again.
- 1:13:35Yeah they tend to do that. Any time I pick them it's like I
- 1:13:38get one and then they bite me the next three weeks if I go
- 1:13:41with them. So I gotta I gotta remember if I
- 1:13:43win one with them. I got to move off of him real
- 1:13:46quick and we'll also Jeff Collins going for to last night
- 1:13:49which made no logical sense. And the only thing you could say
- 1:13:54is inside, we were going to go and score.
- 1:13:58When the game we weren't going to tie it.
- 1:14:00I went six and four. You know, the one that got me
- 1:14:06probably, the biggest was laying 35 and a half points with UMass
- 1:14:10and not getting that I should follow my instinct.
- 1:14:14Well, they're bad team and I should have thought in some way
- 1:14:18FS you would get at least more than 35 and a half points then
- 1:14:22it but I tell you the one that really got both of us was in Sea
- 1:14:26State Miami. Yeah man.
- 1:14:28Well as we sit here we thought a couple weeks ago was just Duke
- 1:14:32and we saw Miami place like what we got a chance there now.
- 1:14:35It's like Miami went from being potential to not very popular.
- 1:14:41They're settled in at quarterback again and now
- 1:14:43they're starting to score some points again and that's helped
- 1:14:45their defense stay off the field as much.
- 1:14:49Yep. And so even though they still
- 1:14:50have some of the same problems on defense that they had three
- 1:14:53weeks ago, they've got some offense to go with that.
- 1:14:57So that's covered up a little those blemishes.
- 1:14:59Yeah absolutely freaking lutely brine so I think Think me and
- 1:15:04Brian. Probably going to be on this
- 1:15:07after we sign off in a couple minutes here and watching the
- 1:15:10end of this game because it's going to be a tight one.
- 1:15:12This could be a very big key Drive.
- 1:15:14Frying, anything breaking in the last nothing big man.
- 1:15:19I haven't seen anything come across my board and was going to
- 1:15:23do one more check. I'm not seeing anything either.
