- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome in everybody to the Talking Tech Podcast, Powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGongal is here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Tristan, can you believe I nailed that in one go after a four-month hiatus from recording the pod?
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: Welcome to the Talking Tech Podcast, a sometimes Texas Tech Sports podcast.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Every once in a while.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: You did well, you did well.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: And I a huge apologies to the treasured listeners.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: I hope we still have y'all out there on the airwaves.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: We're definitely gonna need to get back into the swing of things here.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, every once in a while, just some guys need some breaks, and it's okay.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: We're just all having fun here.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Yes, what you've missed in the last four months, uh well, you guys haven't missed it because you're avid Texas Tech fans, but uh what we've missed is a beautiful basketball season.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Graham Castlin in year two has led the Red Raiders to a three-seed in the NTA tournament, a second place finish in the Big 12, and just an overall really, really nice basketball season.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: After a shaky start, to kind of say the least, I think we were all kind of down in the dumps after the UCF game.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, it was uh this is kind of a resilient team, what um we're figuring out because we've dealt with injuries, uh, we've dealt with you know uh really bad ejections, coaches getting ejected, JT Tobbin getting injected and still winning at Houston, um, and just a lot of adversity.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: And yet this team has really come out on top most of the time and provided a really, really fun and good season.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm really upset with us because we couldn't memorialize some of the greatest uh wins in Texas Tech basketball history.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: Obviously, that biggest one, like you said, the coach being thrown out of the game at Houston, where you you beat you beat the the number one team in the country.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: Um were they number one at the time?
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: I believe they were.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Uh they no, I don't think they were number one at the time, but they were definitely they were like top five or top six, yeah, something like that.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: Um, and but they had the longest home winning streak in the country, and you do it hobbled, yet you pull it off.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: So just just an incredible season, all in all.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: You know, you say you kind of got off to a rocky start, but I think that kind of shows how high the expect expectations were for this program going into uh this basketball season because you look back on it, it's really not that bad, you know, especially with the the teams that you lost to, especially in the early.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, you lost to March Madness teams.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: So uh outside of UCF.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: That one was that UCF was probably the toppest loss.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: And St.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: Joe's.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: St.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Joe's is a bad one.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: Well, I thought St.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: Joe's made the tournament, no?
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, no.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: They were not good.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: Wow, wow, well then.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: I am my my my sources are off, okay.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: Um, but that's um, but yeah, all in all, obviously the the biggest hit to the ego is Texas AM there as well.
- 3:29SPEAKER_03: But uh obviously we're not here to focus on the L's.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: We're here to focus on an incredible season for Grantman Castle and in year two, coming in second in the Big 12, um, with a what with what was not an outside shot to win the conference there for a bit towards the end of the season.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, Houston was a wagon, they were fantastic this year, they still are fantastic, and that's why they're a one-seed in the NCAA tournament.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: But your Red Raiders finish with a three seed in the Western division of the NCAA.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: All right, I'd like to protect myself here.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: I was thinking of St.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: John's.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: My apologies.
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: St.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Joseph's not St.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: John's.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: St.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: John's is in our bracket, though, and in our in our little division here.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: So uh excited, where do you want to start?
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: You want to start with the bracket?
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: You want to start with uh Texas Tex Draw?
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: What do you want to go?
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, we I think we might as well.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, I mean, I really wanted to hit you hit first with your Odyssey in KC, but do you want to postpone that then?
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: No, that's fine.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: We can talk about that.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: So I we we we sent we sent one of our reporters of Talking Tech Podcast, uh Steven Rodriguez, on site in Kansas City.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: Um, he had to pay uh we had we had we we we had the company pay for it, so it was all inclusive um trip true to Kansas City, beautiful Kansas City out there in the Midwest, out there on the plains.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: Uh Steven, give us uh give us uh a rundown with your own eyes.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: What'd you guys think?
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: So a little background.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Um I was there for work in my day job.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Uh this is your primary yeah, this is this is not my primary, so this is no source of income.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Uh no, uh my day job, luckily, one of our main clients uh decided to uh strike a deal with the Big 12 on a sponsorship.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: And so I had the privilege of being there for both the men's and the women's uh Big 12 basketball tournament this year in Kansas City.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: First time in Kansas City, so that was really cool to experience.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Um, some good food, some good barbecue, not as good as Texas, uh, not even close, to be honest.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Um but good beer, good beer, good people.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Uh the weather was all over the place, but um overall a really fun time.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: Uh Power and Light District in downtown Kansas City, right by the T-Mobile Center where the uh tournament is held at, is a really cool area, a lot of bars, a lot of like outdoor venues, and they kind of all meet in one separate opening, um, which is really cool, fun place to hang out.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Um, I think for me personally, I didn't attend the right tournament because honestly, if Kansas or Iowa State or Kansas State is not going forward in this tournament, it really takes takes a turn for the worst in terms of uh fan show out and kind of just the overall experience.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Those first couple days of the men's tournament were really fun, where Iowa State was playing, Kansas was playing, Kansas State was playing, and I mean there were just droves of people.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: It was really cool, it's really fun to experience.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Um, but if those three teams are not going far in this tournament, it uh it's a real downer.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, what do you expect though?
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, you I don't think you expect everybody to drop everything and and clear the calendar to go to Kansas City for uh the Big 12 tournament.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think that's that's that's fine.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's fun if you can make it, you know, and but it's just obviously the people you're seeing are the people that live there.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: So you know, it's just it's a short drive from Lawrence and Manhattan, so uh, and and not too far from Ames either.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: Uh obviously there has to be a big alumni base as well.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: You know, it that that kind of proves the point that moving it to Las Vegas is probably not a great move, you know, because you don't get that for any fan base.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: Nobody, nobody's that close to Las Vegas.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, I guess you could maybe make an argument that there's sort of substantial alumni base of the mountain schools there, but that's probably not it's probably not quite the same as Kansas City.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, look, it's uh it makes less sense for Vegas because you're gonna get less of the loyal fan base and you're really gonna get people.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: We've seen these things where they throw tournaments.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, look at like the NBA Cup this past year, where uh it was in Vegas and no one cared because no one was near it.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, it just it's Vegas is cool in in like uh what you would hope it uh to be.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna land quite like Kansas City does with those loyal fan bases.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Now, I've seen some people talk about Dallas.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: I think Dallas would be cool, and you can get a lot of tech fans there, but you know, TCU fans are lacking.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, even if it's right there in their backyard, they would be lacking.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: Baylor fans are lacking, U of H fans lack.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's just not ideal, real, really.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: And it's been in Kansas City for so long.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: I'm cool with just keeping the tradition alive.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: And um, for the Big 12's sake, they really just hope that uh that Iowa State or Kansas goes far in this tournament.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, their reality, like the Big 12 standpoint, they would have Kansas and Iowa State in that championship game every year because it just brings in a ton of people and it's really fun.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Um, but T Mobile Center's cool.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, the court, I I know a lot of people were complaining about the court, it didn't look nearly as bad in person as it did on television, and I do agree, it looked pretty bad on TV.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Like, I think it was distracting the the having the 12 and Roman numerals all across the entire design, but um they put on a heck of a show, it was fun.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, got to meet Brett Yormark, which was a really cool uh experience for me personally.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, and see all the guys up close in the semifinals in the game that we lost to Arizona.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, we got to sit second row.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Uh, we were in a sweep for the championship game.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: So overall, just a really fun and cool experience.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Kansas City uh would definitely go back.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, I caught your ugly mug on the TV for our game.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: So um I was there, but uh, you know, so when are we gonna get bread on the pod?
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: I was in the elevator with him.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, it was crazy.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: We were staying at the same hotel that the most of the uh Big 12 people and the personnel and the teams and everything were staying at.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: And it was after the uh the day before the semifinal, so the quarterfinals, where I headed back and I just I noticed him and I like did a double take, and I'm like, what?
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: Uh like I've never seen you like more than just on TV or on Twitter or something.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: He's you know, he's as political as you can get.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Very nice guy.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, good to see you.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: Glad you came out.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Glad you know, good to see the Texas Tech One because clearly I'm wearing my tech stuff.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: And uh no, yeah, I mean the 22nd elevator ride, he'll always remember it.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: I'll always remember it.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was a great time.
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, I saw that.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: You know, it's really cool that you got to work with the conference, and it's really cool.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: You're you're probably you're working like a really rejuvenated conference team as well.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: You know, this is not the this is not your dad's Big 12 uh conference team anymore.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: So you got these guys that are really trying really hard to make it make the conference really pop.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: And that really showed with uh whenever you sent me that uh that text that made me agreeing with envy, whenever you sent that jacket, that Big 12 jacket.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: That thing is sick, dude.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they yeah, they handed that to all the all the sponsors that were helping sponsor the event.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: They put on some really cool stuff.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, they put like a a whiskey distillery tour on for us on the on the uh that's really cool semifinal day.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, it was really cool.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: The Big 12 puts on a great show.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: They're they're really trying hard to uh make us stand out as a conference and kind of uh you know make sure that their sponsors keep coming back, which so uh yeah, no complaints on that end.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: I think working with the Big 12 was really cool.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, if you don't wear that jacket, you know, here you are sitting in your podcast studio, you can frame it and hang it.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: That'd be awesome.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I'm definitely gonna wear the heck out of that.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: It's cool.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, dude, uh, you know, just I know I know we kind of got a little distant from it at this point, but I just kind of want to circle back real quick.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: I think, you know, you said it's great to have it in KC.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: I'm sure you all are kind of ready to move on.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: I'll make it quick.
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: Um, that uh the only argument that gets it would be in Dallas.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: But I do think that perhaps you probably do get a bigger crowd in Dallas than KC in the sense that you might okay, bigger is probably not the right word.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: You get a probably a more mixed, because I guarantee you that there's probably a good amount of KU, K-State, OSU uh alumni in the DFW area.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: So uh you probably do get a pretty good mixed crowd, but keep it in KC, you know, just for the sake of tradition, you don't have to change everything, you know, not everything has to be in Dallas for the Big 12.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: So yeah, absolutely.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I think we do need to kind of you know keep our mark there in football.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: I know the SEC is trying to move into that territory a little more with the within Atlanta, keep it over there.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: They're they're moving Media Day and everything like that.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, I like I I and they're it's gonna stay in KC no matter what.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: I think they signed a deal till 2031 or something like that.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: So I mean, there there's no reason bitching about it.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: You just kind of you're never I hate those people that like post the crowds and they're like, oh, Arizona Houston leave it out of Kansas.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: It's like, no shit, it's like that.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: It would have been like that in Vegas if it was West Virginia UCF.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, come on.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: So it it is what it is.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: People are always gonna complain that are on the West Coast schools, they're always gonna complain the teams on the East Coast, so it just is what it is.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: I'm cool with it.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm always pro-KC.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: Gives give some love to the Midwest.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: It doesn't get enough in general, especially that part of the country, like smack dab in the middle, not just like the traditional Midwest of Ohio and stuff.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: Um, all right.
- 12:40SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, dude, let's go ahead and move on.
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: Let's go ahead and move on.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, a pretty good tournament run, you know.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: Uh I was hoping to maybe make a better seed stand there, but uh, whenever we talk about the bracket, it's hard to argue, it's hard to be complaining about the role we got, I think.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I think Texas Tech uh was definitely the highest three seed um here in the NCAA tournament.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: I think overall, you know, some people are uh there's mixed reviews on our draw.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: I think you know, getting Florida, who's probably the hottest team in the country right now, looks really, really good.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: Probably the best team in college basketball over the last month or so.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Um, UConn is always scary to have in your bracket.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: They just are.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, Memphis is playing pretty good uh before Tyrese Hunter got hurt.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: Maryland, um, and then obviously, you know, you got your blue bloods and your coaches right here in the bottom of our west bracket here with with Kansas playing Arkansas, Calipari versus Bill Self, and then Rick Patino right below them, waiting on the winner, unless Omaha just somehow pulls off a huge upset there uh at the 15-2 matchup.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: But um, and then you know, I think what I think what's kind of killer here is you know, tech gets UNC Wilmington.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: We'll talk about that matchup here in a second.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: But if you move on, you're in Wichita, you're in Kansas, and you're gonna play the winner of Missouri and Drake, who are both in that area, not too far.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: So uh especially if it's Mizu, you're gonna, you know, be fighting some home field advantage.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: So I think that's the biggest thing complaint I have about it, but overall I'm pretty happy with where Tech ended up.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, I I totally get you know, the uh not wanting to get that roll against that next game, but dude, Wichita is not exactly on the like right there for Missouri.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: Wichita is like south central Kansas.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: I imagine there's a good amount of Missouri alum that live there.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're not talking about a metropolis here, but I get it.
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: I I I I just I don't I don't think we're uh I I don't think it it's necessarily enough to make a huge difference.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: Um but uh you know, like like you're saying, dude, I I think this is a great role for us.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: And it seems uh all the uh all the media I've been reading here seems to be really friendly to you, of to us, at you, I mean us.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: Um because whenever I'm looking at this, uh the athletic here is giving Texas Tech a one in ten chance to make it to the final four.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: And those odds are very nice.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: Those are very that's a very that's a very good, uh, very spicy odd there.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: And I mean, I like our first role here, our first matchup.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, you always like seeing a four-letter school first, you know?
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: So uh that's that's that's excellent.
- 15:20SPEAKER_03: Um and I'm not worried about Drake being a home field advantage either next round.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: I'm more I'm more worried about the coach there than anything, but let's talk about UNC Wilmington because you got to beat them before you move on.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: And we saw last year uh Grant McCastlin and his team got upset by an 11 seed.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Um, granted, it was an 11 seed that went to the final four and got hot at the right time, but you still got upset, and so you can't overlook anybody in this tournament.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: We've seen too many upsets in the history of this tournament to overlook anybody.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Um, but what I look for when you see like a 314 or a 215 or a 512, you really just look for like what does that lower seed?
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Do they have like a guy?
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Do they have somebody that stands out?
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: Because there's always somebody in the tournament on one of those upset teams that just stands out, whether he's goofy looking, whether he just makes every three-pointer in the world, whether he's good at like one individual thing, or he's just like a massive human.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: And UNC Wilmington doesn't have any of that.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Like, honestly, they don't have like somebody that like is they're gonna run with a story, you know what I'm saying?
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: So as stupid as that sounds, it it gives me a little relief that we're not playing a team that is just gonna be the net next big March Madness story.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: NC State was absolutely that team last year.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, it's funny that you say the the stupid, you know, as stupid as it sounds, but March Madness is a as stupid as it sounds tournament.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, you know, it's why it's so great.
- 16:57SPEAKER_03: It's the most beautiful American sports tournament in the world.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: So uh like like the college football playoff wishes it was March Madness.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: Um, it would never ever be March Madness, no matter what you do with it.
- 17:09SPEAKER_03: Um, so but I I I I'm with you.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: You know, obviously there's there's there's not much here to assume that uh where we're looking at a uh University of Maryland, uh what's it Baltimore County?
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: I mean uh UNBC maybe the golden retrievers.
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: I don't think we're dealing with a situation like that.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: I think we're uh we're safely uh looking at round two in which yeah.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh every time you're filling out a bracket, right?
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: You have to pick upsets, and there's always going to be upsets.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: There just always is.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: It's never chalk.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Now, some years are more chalk than others, and a lot of the experts are thinking like this is gonna be one of those years where it's a little more chalk because they say that every year.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Well, some guys say that every year, but also I I have this theory that like the national media guys they have to say that because then they'll look really stupid if they like plant their flag on some team that just like loses by 20.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of like a give and take a little bit with those guys.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: So I this is a crapshoot.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: The NTA tournament is a crapshoot, filling out your brackets a crapshoot.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, you could be the dumbest person and not watch any college basketball at all.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: And like you could be you could be like my grandma and fill out the fill out the bracket, and she would do better than me who watches way too much college basketball.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: It just it just is what it is, and that's what makes it so fun and so great.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, I always do appreciate the post of like my girlfriend picked filled out a gra uh a bracket based on colors or mascots or something like that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: Based on the mascots fighting each other, that's always a good one.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: That's that's a good one.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: So uh no, I'm with you, man.
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: And uh you were a smart dude.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: You are a smart man.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: You uh took off time, you took uh took some a couple days off with us, didn't you?
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: Uh I actually I had the best of both worlds because I got to go on site in Kansas City, but that also means that I get a couple comp days uh that I can use in the next coming days to take off.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: And this happens to be the week that March Madness kicks off.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: So I took off Thursday, Friday.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be posted up in the living room.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have probably my laptop, the and maybe two televisions going just to watch all the games at one time, and it's gonna be magical.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: And a cooler of beer, right?
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: So 100%.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Cheers to that, brother.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Cheers to that.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: But everybody should be able to watch the Texas Tech game.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: It's a good and a bad thing, right?
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: So we have a we have a nine o'clock, I think it's like 9.10 or 9.15 tip off uh central time, which uh it's the last game of the day on Thursday.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: It's ideal for everybody that works for a living and you know, come gets to come home and actually watch Texas Tech play.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: It's not the first game of the day when everyone's at work or whatever, you got to get away and try to sneak something on your phone or something.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: So at least everybody can watch it.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I'm sure we'll have a good amount of fans that make it up to Wichita, but I I you know, I I'm you're playing all and a sneaky, a sneaky good thing about playing that late on the first day is that you get to enjoy March Madness pretty much the entire first day of March Madness without having your phone worked out.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, like the possibility of your heart is not there.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: So, like last year when we lost NC State, it's like, well, shit.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: 1000%.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, I love the tournament as much as the next guy, but both you and me are kind of like this.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Whenever tech loses, it's like uh I'm losing interest.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: It's such a bummer.
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, explain like like in football season, you know, like if you win at 11 a.m., that this day's gonna rule.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: You lose at 11 a.m.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: All right, what are we doing today, babe?
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, what do you want?
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: What do you want to go do?
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Fine.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Please get me away from this.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: Let's go to the pumpkin patch.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: Let's go and see king.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, man.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: I think there's uh this is gonna be a really fun tournament.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's gonna be nearly as chalk as what people are saying.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: Uh the one seeds are the one seeds are good.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Don't get me wrong.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: The one seeds are really good.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Auburn, though, has lost three of the last four.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: U of H looks really, really good.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Florida looks really, really good.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Duke lost Cooper Flag.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: Um, he should be back for the tournament, but he might be playing a little or injured.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Same deal with Houston with uh Juwan Roberts.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: He got hurt, kind of twisted up in the Big 12 tournament.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: So you never know if he's gonna be back to like 100%.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: But I don't know, man.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: There's just a lot of fun teams.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Like you see, San Diego in their first year of Division I making the NCAA tournament is awesome.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: They're playing uh Michigan, which is really fun.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, they just won the Big Ten tournament.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: Um you know, Arizona playing Akron who shoots the heck out of the ball.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: Like, I it's just there's gonna be so many fun games.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: Akron's the fight in LeBron James is right.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the fighting the fighting zips.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Love to see it.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, so uh the the the Big 12 representation uh Uh pretty strong.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, I you look at these teams and you say, like, you know, they they absolutely have a fighting chance in every every game you're looking at.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, it does look like we have many what low seeds at all.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: It's it appears like nearly every Big 12 team is a single digit.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: Like you don't can you are there any that are double digit seeds?
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: Any of them?
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: No, no, and that's not normal to really have like a power four level team as a double-digit seed.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's very like North.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: I know North Carolina and Texas snuck in uh Arkansas.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: No, I know.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Don't uh I get it.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: The SEC had its own weird thing this year, but I think Baylor's our lowest seed at nine.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, and then you had like Arizona at four, BYU at six, tech at three, Iowa State's a three, he's got a few.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I mean you had yeah, it's it was pitiful that they left out West Virginia and put in Texas and North Carolina.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: It was ridiculous.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: Xavier needs to bind God and go on a crusade against UT.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, you like UT's talented, they've been talented the entire year, but they're not well coached and they don't win games.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: Like they're you there should be a rule that if you don't go 500 in your conference, you can't make 100 unless you win your unless you win your conference tournament.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: Like that's the auto bid.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: We totally understand that.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: But the love that the SEC got this year was so overdone and so overhyped, and these teams are good.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm not trying to like I'm not trying to say they're not good.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: Steven, can you can you can you put your your tinpoil hat on real quick?
- 23:37SPEAKER_03: Do you think this was Astroturfed?
- 23:39SPEAKER_03: Do you think this was like a campaign to make this happen?
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: No, I I really don't because I think some years it's just the narrative starts early and it they just roll with that narrative from the beginning of the year.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: And that was the case with the SEC.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: Like you had a lot of teams that and they did really well in the non-conference.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Uh give them that.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Like they beat a lot of teams in other conferences and everything.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Auburn, Alabama, you know, the top of the top are really good.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Do not get me wrong.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Florida is a really, really good team.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Tennessee, really, really good team.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Auburn, Alabama, really, really good teams.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: But I just think because the teams a tier below them got a couple wins over those top-tier teams, they just automatically got overhyped.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: You know, like A, like I think the AM, Ole Miss, Mississippi State tier, just they're thinking those teams are like incredible and they're just not.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but that that that's always a negative whenever you look at other conferences.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: Whenever they obviously one of the lower guys, they whenever they jump up and beat a bet a a higher guy, most likely what you're gonna hear is perhaps this team isn't as good as you thought, or perhaps this the the top half of this conference isn't as good as we once believed.
- 24:51SPEAKER_03: Um but I I just you know it's it's hard to ignore how 14 of the 16 teams are in March Madness.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, has there ever been a conference that's ever gotten that sort of benefit of the doubt?
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, 14 teams is the most of any conference ever.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: Obviously, but we have to think about ratio.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: I'm not I'm not talking about sheer numbers here.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: Oh, sure.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: Has because I has the Big 12 ever because the equal, I guess the what the equal would be nine out of 10 of the old Big 12.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I think I think there's been years.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: I think there's been years where we got like eight.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: I think there's been years where we have like eight of the still that's still not quite as no, but it's still pretty, it's still pretty high.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: And I mean, before this year, the Big 12 was getting some serious love from national media.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I I think this is just I I really do.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: I think this is a one-off year that they just think that the SEC is is unbelievable.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: And they were really good, they were the best conference in college basketball.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: I'm not trying to say they weren't, but plenty of teams were more deserving of Arkansas, Texas, and OU spot than than they got.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: It would so I'm I'm just gonna stand by that.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: I thought West Virginia should have got the spot over them.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: I thought Ohio State potentially should have got the spot over them.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Um, it just it uh they were they were definitely overhyped.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: I don't want to sound like a blining or anything like that.
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: And I I don't want to ever to me to make it sound like I don't think that teams deserve to be in, deserve to be in.
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: If they deserve to be in, so be it.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: I I just you you you just kind of worry, you kind of suddenly jump towards uh, you know, the ST the STC has the ESBN sports machine behind it and can really help push their product, you know, because they're paying a lot of money to show these STC teams, so obviously they want the payback.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: Um you just hope that you don't see a reflection, a monopolization of attention towards the SEC because they already have it in football, for better or worse.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: And you don't want it to see the same thing happen in basketball.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: And I'm not here to say that's supposed to be the Big 12's crown.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: I'm not I'm not sitting here trying to say that.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: Um, because we added boo-boo teams like Utah.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: So but what I'm trying to say is the the the last vestige of you know even Kiel's all-out madness of college sports is still there in the NCAA run March Madness tournament.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: And I just don't want to see economic politics overtake this beautiful thing that we have where literally anybody who went to any size college that's D1 is invested in this.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: You know.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: So I I just I I I think, you know, obviously I have that natural rivalry and disdain towards the SEC, but I just really hope that this is truly a benefit of the talent and the the results more than anything that's asterturved, is my point.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you know, we'll see.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: I uh you look at the bottom two teams in the SEC right now who went six and twelve in conference.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: They let two teams from the SEC that went six and twelve in conference.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: They won one-third.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: That's so dumb.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: That's insane, dude.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: They won one-third of their conference game.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: And you're saying that you think they probably deserved it?
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: Now, you look at their non-con, OU went undefeated.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: They went like 13-0 to start off the year, and then Texas also had some major wins.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: I thought Texas should have been left out no matter what.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: That that that is the most egregious of all the SEC teams right here.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: But I now I don't think they should have gotten in over some of the other teams, but I do think that they're talented, and I do think that they could win a game or two here in the NCAA tournament.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: But I thought this whole thing, whenever it comes to postseason, is you gotta be hot at the right time.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: That and I think that played.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: But if you're just good at the beginning and then you completely fall off a cliff.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: This is this is the problem with the committee, is there's no like set guidelines.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: You know, some year and they do that on purpose, they do that so if they contradict themselves, you know, then they you know can't they they would get more shit for it.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: They already get shit for it, but it since they don't have these overarching guidelines of hey, if you win, you know, 75% of your games to end the year of your last 10 or whatever, then we take that into account.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: If you win your conference tournament, we take that and or if you go far in your conference tournament, if you did well in quad one games, they don't emphasize any of this.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: It's different every year of how they choose these teams, and really it's different of how it works in general, because you look at like North Carolina, North Carolina had one quad one win all year, they went one and ten in quad one wins, they played in the bum ACC that was terrible all year, has four tournament teams total, and two of them are meh.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Like, there's no guidelines and there's no like clearance of why they deserve to get in over a West Virginia.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: They said you know the committee went out and said that West Virginia, because their best player got hurt back in November, that that was something that mattered in the committee's decision to not include West Virginia.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: That's so ridiculous.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: They won the majority of their quad one games without their best player, but they still let North Carolina in.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: And then you see the commissioner or the the head of the NCAA selection committee is is the AD of North Carolina, and you're like, okay, I mean, this is ridiculous.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: You know, so there it's just egregious at times, and and leaving West Virginia out was an egregious choice and a really, really poor decision by the selection committee.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: And they did it because one, it's North Carolina, a blue butt of college basketball, and two is Texas one of the most money, you know, banking programs in college.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: How many uh Cole Pierce did Bob Huggins crush when he got that news?
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: I uh I think that whole situation is is so tough because Huggy Bear, the West Virginia fans still love him, and he still loves them.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: Why wouldn't they?
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: He just hates the administration, yeah.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: You know, like it's just it's a tough situation, but I I don't think I don't think he wishes, you know, West Virginia does bad.
- 31:16SPEAKER_03: I mean out of frustration, not not joy.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay, okay.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: I thought you were meaning like okay, I got fired from this place.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Screw no, no, yeah.
- 31:23SPEAKER_03: Like I mean out of frustration, not joy.
- 31:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, yeah, there's no reason for the fans they hate him.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: He just made a really dumb mistake, you know.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: That's uh it does feel like West Virginia is just getting ultimately screwed this year on what they're doing.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that was that was sad.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: But I I think all the Big 12 teams will make some noise.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be fun to see who advances, and you know, if the SEC, if it actually was very overrated and we start to hope it is.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, it'd be really funny to see them wash out immediately.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: It would be hilarious to see like four of the 13 advan or four of the 14 advance past the first round.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: Like it would be comical.
- 32:02SPEAKER_03: It'd be beautiful, man.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: But all right, man, you filled out a bracket right before this.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: I filled out two.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: Do you want to go down it?
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: I don't want to go down the entire bracket.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: I just want to point out who are some of your upsets, who can we, what are games that you're watching?
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: Uh all this fun stuff.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: But so do you fill out one bracket every year?
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: And that's just kind of what you do?
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: So my strategy is two, two brackets every year, one where tech wins, no matter what.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: I don't care.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be my tech bracket.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: That's the one I want to do best.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: I I'm gonna choose it, you know, normally, but with tech winning every game.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then one, I choose something I don't want to say more realistic because tech actually has a realistic shot this year.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: But there are some years where tech is like, you know, a kind of lower seed, it's kind of a longer shot.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Um, but go ahead.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: What what are some of the games?
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: What are some of your upsets that you have?
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, you go first.
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: I'm trying to pull up my bracket right now.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: So I'll go with my tech bracket because that's the one I'm gonna pay attention to the most.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: Um, I do have UC San Diego, that's a big upset pick.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Um, them winning 30 games this year, uh Michigan kind of being a little disappointing towards the end of the season.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: I know they won the Big Ten um tournament, but in regular season play, they were kind of teetering off a little bit.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Super turnover to uh heavy team.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then UC San Diego apparently.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: Um, I haven't watched a second of them this year, but apparently they cause a lot of turnovers.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: So you haven't watched San Diego?
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: You know, I haven't.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: I haven't watched uh watched UC San Diego much, but I have so let's just go down.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: I make this mistake every year with St.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Mary's.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: I always pick St.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: Mary's going far.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: I did too.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: I I do it every year.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: I don't know why I do it every year, but I do it every year.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: I have them going to the Elite Eight this year.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: Uh, and they're usually out first second round.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: It just is what it is.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Um, I have McNeese.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: I have Will Wade and McNeese in the Sweet 16 uh playing the Zags after the Zags upset Houston.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: Uh so that's a big one for me.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: I have New Mexico going to the Sweet 16, losing to Iowa State.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: I have Yale going to the Sweet 16, losing to Auburn.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: So I have a good amount of upsets this year.
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: As you should.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: As you should.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: So whenever I look at my first round, uh the first upset that comes comes to mind is the uh the nerd country boys, not nerd, but the country boys of Yale are beating AM.
- 34:30SPEAKER_03: Round one.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: 1000%.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I have it.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: I have it too.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: I have it too.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: I have Yale in the Sweet 16.
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: The the winner, the winner of uh San Diego State and uh UNC is going to be Chris Beard's oldness and Mark Adams' oldness as well.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: So that's happening.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: That is happening.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: Um next next is uh no sort of emotional tie to that pick at all.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: No, not at all.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: That's very that's very objection.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: Both of those are very objective takes.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: Um TexTech is playing Drake.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: Drake is beating Missouri.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: I love that too.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: Wow, we're really exciting for uh with our names.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Drake is fun.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: Drake is fun.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, I I have I have the Bilts, the inner built bilts, beating uh St.
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: Mary's.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: So inner built belts.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: I uh I got no no love for the for for us in that one.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: For the Gales, cool mascot.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: Um next up, uh any big, any after that, my big, my big upsets.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, after that, the the upsets kind of taper off.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: I have Duke losing to Oregon.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: And uh that might be a good call.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Well, that was a sweet 16, round of 32, my bad.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh, you know, outside of that, yeah, that's my next big upset.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: So do you have a do you have any 215 upsets?
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: 215 upsets, uh Michigan State Bryant, you got St.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: John's Omaha, you got Alabama Robert Morris, no Tennessee Wafford.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: I got I got no number twos being upset.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: I have Robert Morris upsetting the crimson tide of Alabama.
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm gonna do.
- 36:09SPEAKER_03: I have it.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: It's gonna happen.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: My my number twos losing next.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: It's not an upset.
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: Iowa State beating Michigan State, and um uh and then Oregon and Houston beating the respective or Alabama and Tennessee.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: So who's your final four?
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: My final four is it's going to be uh my final four is Iowa State, Texas Tech, Oregon, and Houston.
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: And looking at this now, no way Iowa State makes it that far.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Three Big 12 teams in the final four.
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, it's it wasn't really a bias.
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: I was just like, ah, okay, yeah, they could they get them here and there, you know.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: I think Iowa State could beat any team in the country on the right night.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: I really do.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: Iowa State is so good, yeah.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: They are exactly, but and obviously Houston is the real freaking deal.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: Uh I picked Texas Tech winning it all, obviously.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: But obviously, I think a smart man of all the teams that's not Texas Tech, I think Houston's the right call.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I have I like I said, I made two brackets.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Uh one I have Texas Tech winning it, but I have Auburn Tech, Arizona, and Tennessee in the Final Four for that one, with Texas Tech meeting Tennessee in the championship, and of course your Red Raiders winning it all.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: But in my other bracket, which you know, maybe I put a little more thought into, maybe I didn't.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Who knows?
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, I have Michigan State, BYU, Houston, and Yukon.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: I just think like you don't have us making it.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: No, we who are we dropping out of?
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: St.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: John's, the Patino in the Sweet 16.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: I think that's that's like my that's like my where I have tech losing in that version of the bracket.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: I think St.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: John's is scary, like they're just really good.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: Um, the Big East wasn't very good, but uh they just have the talent and the players to do it.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: And Patino, I mean, he's inevitable.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: He's tough to beat, man.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: He's just that he's one of those guys that just has that aura that you just do not want to play him when it comes to tournament time.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, I like honestly though.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Arkansas, Kansas to play St.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: John's, neither of those teams is beaten St.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: John's.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: No, Kansas is bad.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: Like you think they're bad?
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I think they're straight up bad.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: Like wow, man.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna lose to Arkansas.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna lose to Arkansas.
- 38:26SPEAKER_03: Do they still have um Lyola's coach?
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: Who?
- 38:30SPEAKER_03: Uh Arkansas.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: No, this is this is this Bill Self John Calapari matchup.
- 38:35SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh you hired the apologies.
- 38:40SPEAKER_03: Wrong darker red.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, OU's gonna get spanked by UConn.
- 38:46SPEAKER_03: I hope so.
- 38:46SPEAKER_03: One can only hope.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: I hope UConn just has their way with them.
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: You're right for the other uh whirlwind of UConn's joining the Big 12 after this March Madness, after that next inevitable run from the Huskies.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: Finally stopped.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: I don't think I think your mark has completely gone away from like this basketball only sort of thing.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: Once we added the tools, yeah.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: It was like, no.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: He's like, let me see the numbers on that.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, they're bringing no money in.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: No thank you.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: Liberty Biberty is always fun to have in the tournament.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: That is that school, I can't, I can't with my God.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: I can't do it.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: That's cool.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: That school's one of the funny that school is one of the single funniest stories in all of college athletics.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: Because it's a it's a pretty religious school, isn't it?
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: Like yeah, but it's like it's a total like televangelist thing.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: Like it's like a true, it's a true like it's the Joel Osteen University.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: I got it.
- 39:52SPEAKER_03: It's um obviously no disrespect to any anybody that finds finds uh their faith there, but um that that school is a mess.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, it's due to hiring convicts and horrible people as their head coaches.
- 40:06SPEAKER_03: Yes, and and their ADs.
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: They hired them as soon as the Baylor sex scandal guy was fired, like, all right, yeah, sure.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: Well, I think that first meeting is telling us that we have to kind of wrap it up here.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, but dude, just so excited for the tournament.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: I'm going to be posted up, like I said, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, watching just basketball.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: My wife is going to hate it.
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: Dude, I'm jealous.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: I gotta keep doing like moving into a new house crap.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: So I mean, it's a beautiful thing, but uh worse, worse timing.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: Congratulations.
- 40:42SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 40:42SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: Well, hey, you choose, you know, to do your personal things during tough sports times.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, you of course got married on week one of college football.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, you know, you're it's just poor choices.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying, do more stuff during baseball season.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: That's what you need to do.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: That's true, especially with the baseball team we have right now.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, yikes.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: We're not gonna get into that.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: We're no good.
- 41:05SPEAKER_03: We are no good.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: Softball though, pretty good.
- 41:08SPEAKER_03: Softball's good.
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: Baseball's is not good.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, not too good.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, but okay, just to finish her off here, Texas Tech, what do you think is their actual shot of reaching a final four this year?
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: Like, do you put us, do you put a good chance?
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: Do you believe in what Grand McCassin's doing?
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: Do you believe in the health of this team currently?
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: What are kind of your thoughts?
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: Dude, I think we have a really good chance.
- 41:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, if the whole team is healthy, I really think we could beat anybody.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: Uh, especially uh, even on a especially on like a coin flip game against a really good team.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: I really like our chances here.
- 41:43SPEAKER_03: Um, dude, I put our chances at 25%.
- 41:46SPEAKER_03: I think we have a really, really great shot of making the final four.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: Um, and I feel like it being in San Antonio, such a great driving distance for all tech alum makes it such a great, you know, destiny point.
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: Like, like we're with it's fate that we end up in San Antonio at the dome.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: So I think I think we have a pretty good shot, dude.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: What about you?
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: Look, man, I'm drinking an Alamo Golden Ale right now.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: I'm I live in this great city.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: I want this so bad.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: I want Texas Tech to go to the dome with everybody coming down here for that weekend to watch our Red Raiders play for another national championship.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: I want that so badly.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: I think there's a great opportunity.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: I think we have the right coaching staff underneath us.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: What I worry about is this team's health.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, it looks like we're gonna have a full roster going into game one.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: I think Darion's injury is more of a pain tolerance thing.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think chance should be pretty good to go from everything that I've seen, but um, you just never know, uh especially with you know guys sitting out of the Big 12 tournament and everything like that.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: So um if you have a healthy roster at Texas Tech, I think you can go very, very far.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: I think Grammy Castlin is a really, really good coach that has taken his teams very far in these tournaments before.
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: And I'm excited to see what these guys do.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: I think you have uh, you know, a pretty good draw overall.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: Um, could have been better, but it also could have been worse.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, getting Florida if you manage to get to that point um is going to be a really tough one to win.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: Um, same with St.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: John's, and but you can say that for every one and two seed this year.
- 43:25SPEAKER_03: So for some upsets against them.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, honestly.
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: We're really hoping.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: How about Norfolk State, baby?
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Why don't you just go to Florida?
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Spartans, right?
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: I maybe, I don't know.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: I I think they're green.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: That's all Spartans, dog.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: Right on.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: Go Spartans.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: Uh the fact of the matter is you got to beat good teams no matter what when you're in this tournament.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, just like we did in that 2019 run.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: You beat Michigan State, you beat Gonzaga, you beat Michigan.
- 43:48SPEAKER_01: You always have to go through these big programs that have won things before.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Um, and I'm just really excited, man.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: This is my one of my favorite times of the year having all this going on right now.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: It's it's freaking.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Awesome for college basketball fans.
- 44:01SPEAKER_03: One thousand percent, man.
- 44:03SPEAKER_03: And uh, like I said, dude, it's been too long.
- 44:06SPEAKER_03: It feels so good to be back on the mic.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: I wonder if we're a little rusty, you know, as we're going through this.
- 44:11SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, like we will definitely have to keep making this regular again.
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: So, but dude, especially I really hope that you and I have to keep hopping on the mic as we keep going deeper and deeper into the tournament.
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah, man.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: Vibes are high, beer is cold, weather is perfect down in the Lone Star State.
- 44:28SPEAKER_03: Um, and man, it's just a beautiful time to be alive and a beautiful, better time to be a Red Raider.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: Everybody, good luck on your brackets.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, if you're going up to Wichita, we salute you because that is awesome, and you guys are one of the reasons that Texas Tech is so highly respected because you're spending a lot of money and a lot of time to go up there for these games.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: So, shouts out to you guys.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: All right, man, let's end off with a song of the week.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: Dude, you know why we're drinking cold beer, especially on a day like today?
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: It is St.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: Patrick's Day, the patron saint of that island of Ireland.
- 45:02SPEAKER_03: All right, so we toast to him, and with that, I am going to go with a pub anthem over there in the Emerald Isles.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: The Gollway Girl by Josh Abbott Band and Shane Smith in the Saints, a collab.
- 45:18SPEAKER_03: The reason why I picked this is A, it's an Irish anthem, and B, just shows the root how deep the roots go when it comes to like our culture in America from the Irish.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: Um, and a lot of that's musical.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: And this really reflects that.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: And so I'm gonna drink a cold one, listen to Galloway Girl, and jam out.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: Love to see it.
- 45:47SPEAKER_01: Great choice.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: Um, my choice was a little more catered towards our current situation in the NCAA tournament.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: We are in the West bracket.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: I picked an RB group from California.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: I know we don't like that state a lot, but this is a really good group.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: Uh the fine, the Sweet 16 and the Elite Eight, if we make it, will be in San Francisco.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: I believe this band is from Fran San Francisco, but it's probably somebody that not a lot of you have heard of.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's a band called uh Proxima Parada.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: The song is called Musta Been a Ghost, and it is a jam.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: These guys are just vibe, they're just vibing, and it's good times, and it's smooth, easy listening.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: The the lyricism is fantastic, and it's just good RB rhythm and blues, man.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: That's what it's all about.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: So that's my song of the week.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: Proxima Parada must have been a ghost.
- 46:40SPEAKER_04: I guess it must have been a ghost.
- 46:42SPEAKER_04: I don't see no one.
- 46:46SPEAKER_04: Every time I get close, KB.
- 46:50SPEAKER_03: Man, it is rare to hear a band we have not heard of on this podcast.
- 46:55SPEAKER_03: I've not heard this group.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: Trying to switch it up a little bit, man.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: It's just some dudes that are vibing.
- 46:59SPEAKER_01: It's good stuff.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, very West Coast, very California, but Texas Tech is about to take over the West.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: So we out here.
