Latest / Strictly Business / The 5 o' Clock Shadow with Schalk Louw
Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05The JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the 5 o'clock
- 0:09shadow.
- 0:11And as always on a Wednesday, I speak to Skulk Lowe, Portfolio Manager at PSG
- 0:15Wealth Old Oak in Cape Town.
- 0:17Has it really been a week, Skulk?
- 0:19Seems to me like six months or something.
- 0:20The amount of stuff that's happened in the past week, quite extraordinary.
- 0:25No, no, no.
- 0:25Let's start.
- 0:26Let's get the elephant out of the room, man.
- 0:29Massive applause.
- 0:31I mean, we sat here exactly a week ago.
- 0:34You called a top more beautiful than,
- 0:39yeah.
- 0:41And you told me not to.
- 0:42You said there was a graveyard with people that called tops in it exclusively.
- 0:48And you said, don't do it.
- 0:49And I felt so strongly about this gap theory that I have, which is actually very
- 0:54well known.
- 0:56The exhaustion gap was, in fact, on the Thursday about...
- 0:59About 16 hours after I called the top in the gold market.
- 1:03But goodness me, it worked spectacularly well, Skunk.
- 1:07And I want to take this further because listeners don't know this.
- 1:11We actually had a conversation.
- 1:13I complimented Lindsay. I think it was Monday or yesterday morning.
- 1:17Complimented him and he said, I feel this is overdone.
- 1:23Sort of feels like the peg is pegged in again.
- 1:28And I went like, well, you...
- 1:29Gold, gold, you top so well.
- 1:31Why not do the buttons as well?
- 1:34And here we sit.
- 1:35Here we sit.
- 1:36What actually happened was I looked at the gold field's longer term share price
- 1:41action.
- 1:42And it was down 11.6% at the time.
- 1:45And I think that was Monday, Monday morning.
- 1:48And it was on a long term trend line support.
- 1:51And it was a simple analysis.
- 1:53I just said it's done enough.
- 1:55And whether that's a buy or a...
- 1:57a do-nothing recommendation, I don't know.
- 1:59But from then on, it's rallied quite sharply.
- 2:03Yeah.
- 2:04No, that was a great call.
- 2:06Great, great call.
- 2:09And now we see, because this is massive movements.
- 2:14I mean, we've had a few things happen.
- 2:16I mean, like you said, we've had that massive retracement and people are
- 2:23actually extremely nervous
- 2:25about this retracement.
- 2:27But, you know...
- 2:29I tend to feel why.
- 2:31I mean, yes, we saw a 10% or 20% in silver.
- 2:32We saw a massive retracement in these best metals on Friday.
- 2:38But I mean, when I did my update on markets on the 1st of February,
- 2:46it still showed that even with that, let's call it 10% retracement in the gold price,
- 2:52the gold price still did more than 16%
- 2:54in dollar terms in January alone.
- 2:56So, come on.
- 2:58If you're going to be nervous about a 10% retracement, why not ask the question,
- 3:00why did it run way over 20% and still more than 30%
- 3:06over the previous few days?
- 3:09This is volatility.
- 3:10And that's why they're saying, I can't remember who coined it.
- 3:14I mean, you told me the story.
- 3:15It was like gold, gold, it's making me old.
- 3:19That's most probably why.
- 3:21Well, it's made you old in a good way in the last year, and it will continue to do
- 3:24so.
- 3:25One thing that a technical analyst spoke to me about after the run-up and then the
- 3:32spectacular fall in 48
- 3:34hours, it fell nearly $1,200 an ounce, unprecedented stuff in dollar terms.
- 3:37But he said, okay, we've had the A, we'll get the B, which is the recovery, and then
- 3:44the C leg is down again.
- 3:46So whether that C leg, if he's correct, is lower.
- 3:48A lower low than the 44.50 or whatever it was that we got last week?
- 3:52I don't know.
- 3:53But it's interesting.
- 3:54I've just completed an interview with somebody much cleverer than me.
- 3:59He's probably as clever as you.
- 4:01And he's from 91 in London.
- 4:03You know 91 very well.
- 4:05And he's a gold mining investor.
- 4:08And he talked to me about why gold had done it, what he thinks is going to
- 4:15happen, and why the gold shares are going to continue to go.
- 4:17He said the gold shares...
- 4:19are up three times, sometimes four times internationally, but their margins have
- 4:21gone up fivefold.
- 4:23So he feels the shares are still lagging.
- 4:26Yeah, we had this conversation last week.
- 4:28I'm just going to talk about the profit margins again.
- 4:30I mean, it's true.
- 4:31I mean, at these $5,000 levels, these mines are, well,
- 4:37they've been printing money for the past three, four years.
- 4:41They're just, every day they're printing more.
- 4:44But it is important.
- 4:45thing to note i mean i did that uh cobe or chicago board of exchange gold
- 4:52volatility index on friday and that's an interesting one i mean it's just this
- 4:59shows us you need to be you just
- 5:01need to be careful um and when volatility starts there's a good
- 5:02reason why something like a uh uh uh warren buffett often referred to to
- 5:09volatility
- 5:11where he likes to buy uh at certain volatility levels and and we'll we'll get
- 5:16nervous at certain other
- 5:18volatility levels not to go into his strategy but you know when you look at the
- 5:23the cobe
- 5:25gold volatility index, it's been been hovering around that has got 15 odd levels
- 5:30for the past
- 5:3220 years.
- 5:34And it kicked up in COVID, during COVID.
- 5:38We remember that we had that massive spike.
- 5:40It kicked up over 30, which basically over 30% during COVID.
- 5:46But the highest it's actually been was that time where everybody thought that the
- 5:52US is...
- 5:54It's actually, it's bankrupt.
- 5:58They actually, the volatility index went over 50.
- 6:03And for good reason.
- 6:05I mean, there was a really, really good reason why that happened.
- 6:09Now, on Friday, that was the closest the gold volatility index got to that 50 mark,
- 6:15you know,
- 6:17since 2008.
- 6:19Does it tell us something?
- 6:21I'm not going to say it's going to tell us something about the future.
- 6:22All that I'm saying is that things were pretty cracked back in 2008 for it to have
- 6:29such a massive volatility spike.
- 6:32If we're going to start seeing these type of volatility spikes,
- 6:36I would just tell people to just be very, very careful.
- 6:40Be very careful.
- 6:41Be very careful.
- 6:42And this is where we're going to get to the behavioral science part of the
- 6:46podcast.
- 6:48And it would be a real example of investor behavior because you're going to tell me
- 6:53now
- 6:54what happened on Thursday and Friday.
- 6:56What happened to your telephone?
- 6:59Well, I had a few nervous calls.
- 7:01I'm not going to be lying to you.
- 7:03I mean, luckily, I always want to.
- 7:05I mean, we always have this conversation on gold and Lindsay and myself talk about
- 7:10it.
- 7:11And I've been in gold fairly early and I haven't really sold.
- 7:15But I just want to make it.
- 7:16very clear, I've never been a bet the farm type of guy.
- 7:20I've always been managing the risk part of the portfolio,
- 7:26not just the performance side of the portfolio.
- 7:31Even after massive retracement on Friday,
- 7:36portfolios were still fairly stable.
- 7:40It's just I had a long conversation with my dad last night.
- 7:44You know him as well.
- 7:45He's also...
- 7:47a well-known individual in the financial industry or investment industry.
- 7:52And we had a long conversation and sort of debating both
- 7:58sides.
- 8:00And I think the one thing that we got to is this could go either side.
- 8:06When you have a specific commodity or investment, that has gone from
- 8:12$1,000-odd levels and went over $5,000 levels.
- 8:15You need to be careful.
- 8:16But the problem is when you got something like that, if it's called gold, or called
- 8:22silver,
- 8:24or called something like a Bitcoin, if something make those type movement,
- 8:27you suddenly attract the interest of people that's not always knowledgeable.
- 8:31Yes.
- 8:33And they look at that and they've got a thing with the kids usually called FOMO.
- 8:37They've got the fear of missing out.
- 8:40And that's a very, very dangerous thing to be doing.
- 8:44in environments where something has gone up as it did.
- 8:48I still believe as an investment,
- 8:52gold and silver and other precious metals like platinum, palladium, rhodium,
- 8:57it's definitely looking attractive.
- 9:00I think these underlying mines are really, really profitable.
- 9:06And I think if the, let's call it these precious metals stay at these current
- 9:11levels.
- 9:12it's going to yield a really, really good return for investors.
- 9:15I can't see it going much below 4,500.
- 9:18I don't think that a market after the extraordinary 48-hour period that it
- 9:25suffered is going to recover.
- 9:27You can have a nasty injury, for example, and go to hospital and get it bandaged up,
- 9:33and the doctor says everything's fine now.
- 9:35It doesn't mean to say you're going to go out running again.
- 9:36So it's the same with a market like this.
- 9:39We did see a V-shaped recovery.
- 9:41after Liberation Day in the stock market.
- 9:43So there are V-shaped exceptions to the rule.
- 9:47But I think that we get the people that didn't get out the first time because it
- 9:53was too quick, if it rallies again,
- 9:55which it has done.
- 9:57I mean, it was 5,050 when I was conducting an interview with that chap from 91.
- 10:00That was only 45 minutes ago.
- 10:02It's now 49.93, the gold price.
- 10:05It's already $50 down.
- 10:06It's very volatile.
- 10:07So be careful.
- 10:09I think let it consolidate and then take it from there.
- 10:12Do you agree with me?
- 10:13I'm being rather sensible.
- 10:15Yeah, I think definitely, undoubtedly.
- 10:19But I think today we need to talk about other things.
- 10:23Because I think there's this...
- 10:25You know, over the past few days,
- 10:27we've also started seeing little cracks in these tech companies.
- 10:32Very much so.
- 10:33Yeah, and that's also a very,
- 10:37very interesting play because that's sort of an area in the market that's been
- 10:44keeping global markets,
- 10:46so to speak, positive.
- 10:46I looked at a fund the other day.
- 10:49Yeah, I wonder if I should I'd rather not call out the fund manager's name.
- 10:55It's not a local fund manager, but a well-known international one.
- 10:59Don't do it anyway.
- 11:00Someone might be listening.
- 11:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:03No, no, no, exactly.
- 11:04But it's not a, it's not a brain dump.
- 11:06They've got a, it's, the fund's name is
- 11:12Global Brands or Well-Known Brands or something.
- 11:14That's the fund's name.
- 11:16And it is.
- 11:18When you look at the companies that they're holding in this fund, It is the
- 11:25best of the best.
- 11:27This is the likes of, yes, they've got the Microsoft,
- 11:30but they're not really just focused on tech stocks.
- 11:34They've got the likes of the Nike and really, really well-known, the strongest
- 11:41brands in the world.
- 11:43What is interesting when you look at their performances over the past, I think it was
- 11:47three years,
- 11:49the annual performances in dollar.
- 11:52for the mci all country world in it which is their which is their benchmark yield a
- 11:59return of just over 21 percent per
- 12:01annum this specific fund only did seven percent per annum so so underperformed
- 12:06their benchmark by 14
- 12:08percent per annum and by no means can you look at these these the the the companies
- 12:13that they're holding inside the
- 12:15fund and think man this is a bad fund because i look at the fund and I said,
- 12:18this is great companies.
- 12:20Strong, well-run.
- 12:22profitable companies but they were just not the flavor the flavor was if you
- 12:28didn't have some
- 12:30ai or you know something like that you underperformed and and that's that's
- 12:35interesting and i
- 12:37don't know if you've seen that that thing about that the software companies are over
- 12:41the forest yes i've noticed i've noticed that this a
- 12:43software company is not going to become obsolete but getting their getting their
- 12:47products shunted
- 12:49aside because of AI, AI replacements.
- 12:51And your software companies have had a horrible time.
- 12:53And the other thing is you're getting to the point now where there's so many new
- 13:00entrants to the market that it's sort of diluting
- 13:02the trade a little bit.
- 13:04And people say, right, this is the new thing.
- 13:06And taking money out of a traditional, if there is such a thing, a traditional AI
- 13:10company, maybe a bit of that is happening.
- 13:12But also when you I had this conversation with a couple of chaps on a Thursday
- 13:16podcast.
- 13:18and I said there seems to be now a royalty of AI companies emerging.
- 13:22In other words, the AI equivalent of, say, Microsoft coming to the fore.
- 13:27And you think of NVIDIA.
- 13:29And so I always look at NVIDIA first on my tech board.
- 13:34And it's done nothing for a while.
- 13:36It went shooting up to 205.
- 13:38I think that was post-results.
- 13:41And it's now messing around at, what is it, about 180, something like that, Skalk,
- 13:47at the moment.
- 13:49It's really going nowhere.
- 13:51And I honestly believe that the amount of capex that's going into these companies
- 13:56that is consistently announced at
- 13:58their results presentations eventually is going to be a bit of a drag on those
- 14:03companies.
- 14:05And the easy money has been made by investors.
- 14:07So at best, the good ones go flat to slightly higher.
- 14:12At worst, they get replaced by newcomers.
- 14:14I don't know.
- 14:15It's just a simple analysis again.
- 14:17But I agree with you entirely.
- 14:18It's well worth watching what happens to the NASDAQ this year.
- 14:22Correct.
- 14:23I mean,
- 14:24you had a few points and really interesting ones about AI and software
- 14:31companies.
- 14:32Because you tend to think, and this way, the user got the same, that not all tech
- 14:38companies are created equal.
- 14:40You would think you've got a portfolio of great software companies.
- 14:43I'm not going to mention, again, names because there's so many.
- 14:46But if you just look at the S&P North American Software Index,
- 14:51this is the, let's call it major software.
- 14:56I mean, if somebody tells you, are you invested in tech?
- 14:58Yes, I'm invested in the S&P North American Software Index.
- 15:03That's my benchmark.
- 15:05When you look at the S&P 500 over the past 12 months, that's done close to 19%.
- 15:11That's until the 2nd of February.
- 15:1319% in dollar terms.
- 15:16Over the same period, this index did minus 10.2%.
- 15:22Again, look at the discrepancy.
- 15:23We're looking at close to 30% underperformances.
- 15:27You were invested in tech, but man, you weren't invested.
- 15:30Then secondly, you've got the likes of the NVIDIA.
- 15:33I was looking at upgrading one or two of my home,
- 15:41which I'm now talking to you on, my home PC, which I run my microphones and those
- 15:47kind of things off.
- 15:49Yes.
- 15:51And I went to my tech friend or tech specialist.
- 15:54and ask him we need to upgrade a few things on my my computer i need a bit more
- 16:01hard drive more space
- 16:03um and and maybe looking at a at a video card because maybe that's time to upgrade
- 16:09and this
- 16:11would look and when when when
- 16:13your mechanic or your doctor or any of those people go like or a sharpie and take
- 16:20a breath through their
- 16:22teeth that's the other one Ooh.
- 16:24I realized, okay, this is going to be big.
- 16:27And he went like, Scott, I mean, literally, October, he said September,
- 16:33October-ish, he wanted a quote for a specific hard drive.
- 16:39And he got a quote, and that quote was a thousand rand for that specific hard
- 16:43drive.
- 16:44And nobody should quote me.
- 16:46I may be using the wrong analogy.
- 16:47It could be an SSD or something like that.
- 16:50I'm still calling it a hard drive.
- 16:52But it was a thousand rand.
- 16:53He says, Skog, I kid you not, that exact same hard drive will cost you 3,000 Rand
- 16:59now.
- 16:59And that's the thing.
- 17:02There was such a massive, people, or at least, they're selling,
- 17:07there's such a massive demand for these hard drives because of cloud space,
- 17:14these cloud computers, which the AI will need to run.
- 17:18Also, you can't run AI without having a proper...
- 17:24video card or graphics card and that's just when the likes and the videos and
- 17:30those people i'm coming but what's going to be interesting when we
- 17:32see the result wait a second what are you doing you're making films at home or
- 17:37something i thought you were what are you using ai for why why do you
- 17:39you're not saying you need one of these video cards are you
- 17:41no no no i need i need video cards because if some things on on your computer tend
- 17:48when your computer
- 17:50starts running slower i've I actually found out back in the days when computers
- 17:53started running slow.
- 17:55I'll get the tech guy out and say, well, you just need more RAM or you need some
- 17:59more memory or something like that.
- 18:01You need a stronger computer.
- 18:03And then it's like, okay, get me a stronger computer.
- 18:03Nowadays, it's not just about the computer strength or, hey, now I'm going to sound
- 18:10CPU. It also needs to look at the GPU, which is the graphics side.
- 18:16But I'm not going to go into the IT side.
- 18:18What I'm going to get to is...
- 18:19And what I'm going to be focusing on when NVIDIA reports,
- 18:23because I think that's to a certain extent why we haven't seen any movement in NVIDIA
- 18:30since the last
- 18:32report.
- 18:34Because the one thing that stood out was the inventories.
- 18:36The inventories were showing an increase since the last time reported.
- 18:39Why are your inventories increasing when you're telling the whole world there's
- 18:46such a massive
- 18:48demand that there's not enough stock?
- 18:49for us to deliver and that's why my hard drive will go up from a thousand rand to
- 18:56three thousand rand i i think
- 18:58um i think we're sitting with something in in this let's call it global market that's
- 19:03that's also about to
- 19:05break that's the one thing i'm massively worried about on
- 19:07the i.t side that this this this called ai demand sort of created an artificial or or
- 19:14artificial, or sort of a manipulation of prices.
- 19:18Very good.
- 19:19Yes, it has run a bit too far.
- 19:21And the other thing about it is, just like Bitcoin, you say to someone, why are you
- 19:26buying Bitcoin?
- 19:28And they say, well, because it's going up.
- 19:30And it's the same thing with many investors when it comes to AI.
- 19:32No one really understands the deeper side of AI.
- 19:39I just saw one piece of, for example,
- 19:42legal software that has become obsolete because of AI analysis of legal matters.
- 19:47That was links to how you introduced this AI theme, you know, software companies
- 19:53coming under pressure.
- 19:55But there's a lot of misunderstanding.
- 19:56Same with cryptocurrencies.
- 19:59And we'll come to that in a second as well.
- 20:01It is the five o'clock shadow.
- 20:02We've got to look at the JSC.
- 20:04Fish and chickens doing well today.
- 20:08Vodacom doing nothing as usual as its utility.
- 20:12Give us a roundup of companies on the JSC that made announcements, if you've looked
- 20:18at them, if you've had time.
- 20:20Yeah, I did.
- 20:22I did.
- 20:24I mean, and actually, I mean, chickens, you're referring to rainbow chickens.
- 20:26Yeah, solid set of results, or let's call it a trading statement,
- 20:29stating that the headline earnings per share is going to be up anything between
- 20:3569.46 cents to 76.5.
- 20:39Now this is massive numbers, we're looking at 95% or under 15%.
- 20:43Now,
- 20:44I think nobody should be focused too much on those major numbers because when you
- 20:51look at chickens,
- 20:53the major cost input is naturally the food.
- 20:55And when you look at the yellow maize prices, that was trading, well, it's
- 21:01literally trading at about,
- 21:03let's call it 65, 70% of the levels it was trading, let's call it last year,
- 21:08this time around.
- 21:08So we've had a massive retracement in the food, so the input cost decreased.
- 21:13So it went from a perfect storm to a much better and a better environment.
- 21:19So that's just a great recovery.
- 21:22but also they did mention that
- 21:25the local demand for their products did increase as well.
- 21:29They call it robust demand.
- 21:31So that's looking good and that's a great, great...
- 21:35Good because it's been such a dog.
- 21:37I mean, it really has.
- 21:37I haven't looked at it for quite a while, but I remember the days when you couldn't
- 21:42give away those shares.
- 21:44So nice to see that recovering.
- 21:45Sea Harvest also doing well.
- 21:46You don't need to go into that, but also nice to see that one after a trading
- 21:51update.
- 21:53Vodacom trading update.
- 21:53Gosh, I don't know.
- 21:54When I think of Vodacom, and I can't even be bothered to read the results, it sounds
- 22:01nasty and dismissive, but it's really boring.
- 22:03Yeah, I think we've had, it was Vodacom,
- 22:10and also RCL Foods.
- 22:12How can we put this politely?
- 22:16It was a bitter, bitter, bitter update.
- 22:22Because, yeah, they say they're really struggling with the sugar market.
- 22:28It's giving them gray hair.
- 22:30And that saw a major retracement in the share price of the trading update.
- 22:36They're really struggling.
- 22:38And they said that the sugar tariffs didn't adequately shield them in local
- 22:45market currently with
- 22:47these imports.
- 22:49So the Vodacom one is an interesting one, Lindsay.
- 22:50Yeah, it's...
- 22:51It's interesting in the sense that it's also a company that's not really
- 22:58attracting my
- 23:00interest.
- 23:02I'm really worried.
- 23:04We've often had this conversation.
- 23:06They're selling a product, and not just Vodacom, I mean these telcos.
- 23:07They're selling a product in essence that people want for free.
- 23:11And I think and believe that eventually we'll get for free.
- 23:15I mean, that's just the harsh reality.
- 23:18I mean, they're selling things like...
- 23:22call, airtime, which people don't really often buy anymore,
- 23:28and they're selling data, which people want for free.
- 23:31And they get for free in certain instances, don't they?
- 23:33Exactly, exactly, exactly.
- 23:36And then also, you're sitting in an environment where we're sitting with a few
- 23:42providers.
- 23:44I mean, in a smallish country like South Africa, compared to the world,
- 23:47we've got quite a few providers.
- 23:50The competition in that market, I think, is going to be a tough one.
- 23:59I said this is going to be sort of a sweet and sour conversation.
- 24:04The sweet side is when we think of 2025,
- 24:09we tend to be focused on, oh, it was the year for gold.
- 24:14It was the year for the PGMs.
- 24:17But when you look at the top 15...
- 24:20you tend to forget that MTN was in the top 15, Telcom was in the top 15,
- 24:26Vodacom was in the top 15.
- 24:28So, yes, these companies did really, really well because they came from very,
- 24:34very distressed and called it deep, deep value levels.
- 24:39And they just did the basics right, got a few things right,
- 24:44and that saw them...
- 24:47actually improved.
- 24:48When you look at the likes of Vodacom, they're still trading at a forward P of 13
- 24:51times.
- 24:51So they're not really expensive.
- 24:55And when you look at this, it's called a trading update from them,
- 25:00it does sort of support why we've seen the recovery in the share price.
- 25:05So it's quietly going about its business when everyone else is focused on what
- 25:12we've been focused on for ages, and that is precious metals, other commodities,
- 25:14and also artificial intelligence and other associated tech companies.
- 25:16So well done.
- 25:17to those telcos that have quietly, well, certainly not been on my radar at all, and
- 25:23I must start looking at it again.
- 25:25I mustn't be so myopic, Skull, and I blame you in a certain sense for this.
- 25:29Exactly.
- 25:29I'm always talking about gold.
- 25:31I'm always talking about gold.
- 25:32I never focus on the important stuff of the other JSC companies.
- 25:37I just want to end off with a comment.
- 25:38I think the one thing that stood out for me, and I've often said this,
- 25:43there's selling a product which people don't want to pay for.
- 25:45We've already said that.
- 25:47And that's why when you look at the likes of I think it was David Shapiro today that
- 25:52mentioned it.
- 25:53When you look at the likes of a Pepco, they're selling products that people do
- 25:58like.
- 25:59They add in these telco products as well.
- 26:03So the problem is with Vodacom is they're selling a product eventually people want
- 26:08to get for free.
- 26:10What are they going to focus on?
- 26:12Now, this is where I actually like the trading up topic.
- 26:13So I already mentioned that the financial services side within Vodacom is now
- 26:19contributing
- 26:2113% of the group's revenue.
- 26:23It's showing you that those fintech type of products which… the likes of the
- 26:27Vodacom's, the MTN's, even Telcom's offer is now starting to kick in.
- 26:33Will it kick in quick enough while you've got a product that will eventually lose
- 26:39its profit margins?
- 26:41That'll be the big question.
- 26:43As I mentioned, it's not a company that I own, and most probably not a company that
- 26:46I will own anytime soon.
- 26:48Scott, let's have a look at some numbers now.
- 26:50The dollar round is 16.01.
- 26:52The British pound against the round, 21.90.
- 26:54The euro round, 18.90.
- 26:56Euro dollar.
- 26:57Again, they've cut off those last two numbers on my screen, but it's 1.18 and a
- 27:02bit, let's call it.
- 27:04Gold price now 49.56, which is up on the day, $17.
- 27:08But as the JSC closes, on its lows of the day, more or less, because it was 5,050,
- 27:15as I said,
- 27:17about an hour ago now.
- 27:19So it's fallen $100.
- 27:21But we're used to that.
- 27:23The platinum price is 2240, which is up 6.5%.
- 27:24Well done.
- 27:25Palladium 1791, which is up 5%.
- 27:28Gong for that one as well.
- 27:30Let's have a look at the other commodities.
- 27:32Looking at that CRB index the other day, we were talking about the all-time record
- 27:36high.
- 27:36Got close to it.
- 27:37Got to about 405, 406.
- 27:41No, closer, 407 actually, a couple of days ago.
- 27:44Now back down to 390.
- 27:46The oil price, a lot to do with that.
- 27:48Oil price now up 0.5% for West Texas at $63.54.
- 27:52And the Brent crude oil price, $67.66, up 0.5%.
- 27:55Copper is $5.98 per pound, and that's down 1.8%.
- 28:02Suddenly started to fall, as gold has started to fall as well.
- 28:06Silver, though, still up for $88.61 per barrel, up 4.2%.
- 28:12OK, what else have we got here?
- 28:15I want to go to the US 10-year Treasury bond yield, quietly doing its thing as I
- 28:21told you last year.
- 28:23Scalp 4.282% was 4.30 yesterday.
- 28:26The South African 10-year bond just couldn't get through 8% today, 8.055 on
- 28:32the close.
- 28:34S&P 500 futures 69.32, down very slightly, reversing earlier gains.
- 28:39And here's the one that has interested me, another call of ours, Scalp.
- 28:43Bitcoin, 74,800, down another 4.3% today.
- 28:50And it's now 40% lower than its peak in October.
- 28:54So a proper bear market for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Doge, the whole lot.
- 28:59Across the board, crypto is having a torrid time.
- 29:03Sorry, Donald.
- 29:05I won't get political about it, but I'd love to.
- 29:08Do we buy when it gets back to $6,000 this time around?
- 29:13It would be nice.
- 29:14I mean, even I could probably afford to, you know, with a couple of mates to buy
- 29:20one and just put it on the wall or something.
- 29:22And people would say, what is that there?
- 29:24Bit what?
- 29:26I'd say Bitcoin.
- 29:28That was a big thing when I was still a podcaster.
- 29:30Obsolete now, of course.
- 29:32Right.
- 29:34Now, what else have we got?
- 29:36Okay.
- 29:38The moves on the JSC today.
- 29:40I'll start with the uppers.
- 29:42Sasol.
- 29:44It was looking horrible a few days ago.
- 29:46Now up 6% on the day.
- 29:48114, round 75.
- 29:50South 32, up 4.2%.
- 29:52Anglo Gold, 4.2% as well.
- 29:54Alphamin up 4.4%.
- 29:56And Mondi coming in with a 4% gain.
- 29:58We didn't talk about Sappy's numbers today, Skulk, but don't worry about that.
- 30:00Process on the downside by 4.6%. Bytes a 4% loser.
- 30:02NASPERS down 3.2%.
- 30:04Italtile 3.2% as well.
- 30:07And three and a third percent down is Sun.
- 30:09Any others?
- 30:10Scott?
- 30:12No, not, not.
- 30:13It's just, while you were talking about the gold price now retracing,
- 30:19it's become sort of a common trend where you see the east in the morning.
- 30:24They sort of push these precious metals upward.
- 30:28And then you see as soon as the US starts opening, it starts dwindling downwards.
- 30:33It's definitely, definitely some east and west.
- 30:37competition here on trying to see who's going to keep the gold price and silver
- 30:44price up and who's going to be smashing it down
- 30:46with.
- 30:48Yeah, it's crazy times.
- 30:50But one of the things I'm not going to do, by the way, is predict anything else for
- 30:51the rest of the year.
- 30:53Not unless it's clear.
- 30:55If you go to a drinks party or something, Skulk, this is my tip here.
- 30:59And what happens at drinks parties is you get sort of groups of people, don't you?
- 31:02You get three or four standing around talking nonsense.
- 31:05They may be doctors, and then over there you've got the financial people like
- 31:09yourself all talking.
- 31:11If you make a joke and make people laugh uproariously, Skulk, just immediately,
- 31:15Say,
- 31:17I'm going to go to the bathroom and leave.
- 31:19Don't try and make another joke.
- 31:21It's the same with tipping markets.
- 31:23I'm not picking.
- 31:24You're not a comedian.
- 31:25You're not a comedian.
- 31:27You got lucky.
- 31:28I'm not picking exactly.
- 31:29I'm out of here.
- 31:31Just like my gold call.
- 31:33I'm going to take that tip.
- 31:36Well, that's a funny one.
- 31:41Skulklo is a portfolio manager at...
- 31:44PSG Wealth Old Oak in Cape Town and that was the five o'clock shadow.
