- Keenan: All right, y'all. Welcome back, day seven of our nine days to believe. So Keenan. This is Root and Real with Keenan. Like I said, day seven of our nine-day series. So the past week, we've talked about curiosity, belief, failure, obedience, success, And today gonna talk about growth. One of my favorite quotes. ⁓ Ted says this if you're comfortable, you're probably doing it wrong. At first, I heard that and I'm like, that sounds kind of backwards. That's kind of weird. Isn't comfort what we're all chasing, though? Comfortable job, comfortable income, comfortable life, comfortable couch, comfortable chair. If you follow Jesus for any length of time, you know he rarely, if ever, Calls people into comfortable situations. He calls them into faithful situations. So when I look back over my life, every season of growth had one thing in common. I didn't feel ready. Leaving FanDuel didn't feel comfortable. Starting grad school when my first child was being born didn't feel comfortable. Studying for the NCMHCE exam didn't feel comfortable. While having a second child come, it differently wasn't comfortable. Starting over wasn't comfortable. Going into counseling, into private practice wasn't comfortable. Even this podcast is not comfortable. Was not comfortable. If I had waited till I felt completely confident about anything, I'd still be waiting. Looking back, I realized something. God has done some of done some of his greatest work in my life through seasons I would have never chosen. There's a principle in psychology called the comfort zone model. Inside the comfort zone, things feel familiar and predictable. the comfort zone is the growth zone. That's where we learn new skills, build resilience, develop confidence, expand capacity. Notice something important there. Confidence usually ⁓ come action. Confidence Comes after repeated action. Waiting to feel ready is what gets people stuck. Healthy growth requires taking one small step before your emotions fully catch up. So what does the Bible say about this? Think about every ⁓ figure in the Bible. Moses stood before Pharaoh with fear and in self-doubt. Joshua stepped into leadership after Moses. Esther risked her life by approaching the king. Peter stepped out of the boat while the storm was still raging. None of them were called into comfort. They were called into obedience. James write this. Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that testing your faith produces perseverance. That's James 1, 2 through 3. God often develops us through the very things we would prefer to avoid. One of the most common things I hear is this. I just want to feel normal again. I just want to feel okay again. And I understand that. I get that. That's totally reasonable. But sometimes healing isn't about getting back to who you were. Sometimes it's about becoming someone you've never been. That's why growth feels uncomfortable. habits are familiar. ⁓ habits require intention. Healing asks us to practice what doesn't yet feel natural. Whether it's setting boundaries, speaking honestly, forgiving, asking for help, walking into it, excuse walking into counsel office for the first time. Growth almost always feels awkward before it feels rewarding. So here's what I'm still learning. I still have moments where I question myself. The imposter syndrome kicks in, I doubt myself. Even before recording an episode like this, sometimes I wonder will anybody ⁓ anybody hear this? Will anybody listen? Am I saying this well? What if I get it wrong? But then I remember something. God didn't call me to be perfect, He called me to be faithful. And faithfulness ⁓ requires taking the next step before ⁓ doubts disappear. So here's the challenge you can do. I want you to identify identify One area where you've become comfortable. Maybe you've stopped growing spiritually. Maybe you've stopped investing in your marriage. Maybe you've stopped taking care of your mental health. Maybe you've stopped pursuing the dream God placed on you. So ask yourself this: What is one uncomfortable step that would move me closer to the person God is calling me to become? Then take that step this week. Not because it's easy, not because I told you so, because growth rarely is easy. Growth is not easy. So let's pray this. thank you for loving us too much ⁓ leave us where we are. Give us courage to step beyond comfort and into obedience. Help us trust that even when growth feels uncomfortable, you are shaping us into the image of Christ. Teach us to fear complacency more than change. In Jesus' name. Amen. So tomorrow's day eight, and we're going to talk about one of the most important, beautiful things in Ted Lasso, second chances. We'll look at forgiveness, we'll look at grace, redemption, and why the gospel is at its heart the greatest second chance story ever told. may even be a twist that I throw in there for day eight. That you haven't seen. But then, ⁓ your comfort zone may feel safe, but your calling is usually waiting just outside of it. This is Rude and Real Akenan. Grace and peace. And see y'all tomorrow.
