- 0:59Speaker 1: short week. How's the preparation going? According to rule not
- 1:04Speaker 1: much different? How about you, guys?
- 1:07Speaker 3: It was much shorter this week.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Personally, I don't know if I'm ready to take them
- 1:12Speaker 2: on Illinois.
- 1:14Speaker 3: No, I don't know.
- 1:15Speaker 2: My survivor pool picks were a little rushed. I kind
- 1:17Speaker 2: of messed up.
- 1:18Speaker 3: I had picked them all up for the whole year,
- 1:19Speaker 3: and then last week I called some audibles.
- 1:22Speaker 2: I had to shift some stuff around. It was stressful.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Yeah, we didn't have enough time prepared for this, and
- 1:27Speaker 4: my picks might be off, but we'll get him done.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Well. I will say this, one person is going a
- 1:36Speaker 1: very different route than the other two in our survivor pool.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Just looking at the routes and dak got being you.
- 1:43Speaker 1: You're taking a lot of favorites, big time favorites, which
- 1:47Speaker 1: might work out. Austin, I might slip up, but we
- 1:50Speaker 1: will see when we get to picks. At the end,
- 1:52Speaker 1: we are still alive. So that's the good news.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Dak.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Short week, Friday night game.
- 2:01Speaker 1: More excited for the Husker game or the Oklahoma game
- 2:03Speaker 1: this weekend.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Oklahoma, for sure, that's gonna be an absolute ass kicking.
- 2:08Speaker 4: And it'll be Oklahoma ass kicking Tennessee. All this top Okay,
- 2:12Speaker 4: can you want talk about calling game later and now?
- 2:14Speaker 1: No, let's do it now. You go ahead, Okay, do
- 2:17Speaker 1: your thing with your team that you know five players on.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Tennessee is doing all this talk about how good they are.
- 2:23Speaker 4: You know you haven't had a good season, and since
- 2:25Speaker 4: the Huskers are a good season, one good year, you
- 2:28Speaker 4: think you have well coming to Norman, you'll see what
- 2:29Speaker 4: happens night game, game day there.
- 2:31Speaker 5: We're gonna kick their ass.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I will say, Tennessee spread is one of my favorite
- 2:37Speaker 1: bets this week.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Old quarterbacks coming in town. Josh ipel I also like
- 2:45Speaker 4: the guy, but not this.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Week, Dak.
- 2:47Speaker 1: We might have to we might have to make a
- 2:51Speaker 1: little side bet here on this because I I I
- 2:55Speaker 1: just I just am not buying into Oklahoma so far
- 2:58Speaker 1: with what they've done, and Tennessee is ready to roll people.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And I love it. They're often they carried they on site,
- 3:07Speaker 1: kicked up thirty one nothing in the first quarter this week,
- 3:10Speaker 1: like come on, very scary and got it. Like you
- 3:14Speaker 1: want to talk about going for the kill shot like
- 3:16Speaker 1: Scott Frost. They actually got the kill shot.
- 3:21Speaker 5: I mean they haven't played anybody yet, but.
- 3:24Speaker 4: This is the best Oklahoma okam might not say this
- 3:27Speaker 4: on Sunday right now, the best Oklahoma defense they've had
- 3:29Speaker 4: in probably fifteen twenty years.
- 3:34Speaker 5: So we'll see. Come to Norman, you guys do.
- 3:40Speaker 3: The thing that Tennessee is next year they're increasing all
- 3:43Speaker 3: their tickets by ten percent for profit sharing.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I like it, and I I my.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Issue with it is they say it's profit sharing, but
- 3:54Speaker 3: they just increased the cost ten percent, and then they're
- 3:57Speaker 3: giving them that like they're not sharing the profit, just
- 4:00Speaker 3: they're charging more and then give it like, I don't know.
- 4:05Speaker 1: It's not the business definition of profit sharing that we're
- 4:08Speaker 1: using to know.
- 4:09Speaker 3: They weren't like, oh, here's not much money we're making,
- 4:11Speaker 3: we're actually gonna share it's no just revenue customer. Yeah,
- 4:15Speaker 3: it's just revenue share. We're gonna put the cost on
- 4:16Speaker 3: the customer and split it out before it even makes
- 4:19Speaker 3: it to the Yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Whatever, Now does it come come out? Ten years down
- 4:23Speaker 4: the road. There were scumbags about it and just kept themselves.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I mean, they're gonna keep aspects of it. There's gonna
- 4:31Speaker 3: be fees though, associated with the cost of tickets that
- 4:34Speaker 3: I'm sure in some way is gonna wake its way back.
- 4:36Speaker 3: You know, you increase ticket costs, some other things cost more.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And I don't know publicly you can put out and
- 4:42Speaker 1: say this is what you're doing. Not do it. But
- 4:45Speaker 1: maybe Dag, maybe you're right.
- 4:49Speaker 5: Ten years down the road, we'll talk about it.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Okay, Illinois talk big game, maybe the next new big
- 4:57Speaker 1: game for the Huskers. I heard this on another podcast
- 5:01Speaker 1: and I liked it, so I think it's worth talking
- 5:04Speaker 1: about here. We had a lot of conversation on resetting expectations,
- 5:11Speaker 1: new floor ceilings on Sunday. This game, I think is
- 5:16Speaker 1: a big deciding factor and where the season continues to go.
- 5:21Speaker 1: We've talked about potentially letdown spot what Huskers are used
- 5:25Speaker 1: to with the scar tissue and I really liked how
- 5:29Speaker 1: they broke this down. So they came up with three,
- 5:31Speaker 1: but I want to see if you guys can go
- 5:34Speaker 1: through and name these And I got a word the question, right,
- 5:36Speaker 1: So what has been the three overhanging things that have
- 5:41Speaker 1: plagued Nebraska football the past like five to ten years?
- 5:46Speaker 3: Turnovers?
- 5:47Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, we can say that one altogether.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Penal to ease, no, yes, but not I mean execution.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Is that how you want to?
- 6:01Speaker 1: Oh?
- 6:01Speaker 3: Maybe?
- 6:02Speaker 1: So the other two things, which said were close games,
- 6:07Speaker 1: one score games, like not being able to win one
- 6:11Speaker 1: score games. And then the last one was and this
- 6:13Speaker 1: is maybe over longer than a five to ten year period,
- 6:16Speaker 1: is winning big games.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Oh?
- 6:21Speaker 1: We like those are the three things that come to
- 6:24Speaker 1: mind where I'm like, okay, Nebraska football, like what has
- 6:28Speaker 1: just sucked over the past few years and has led
- 6:32Speaker 1: us to suck? Or what has just been hard to
- 6:34Speaker 1: be a Husker fans? Those three things, and I really
- 6:37Speaker 1: like that breakdowns and like, yeah, like that sums it up.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, you can throw penalties in there, you
- 6:42Speaker 1: can break down the why behind it.
- 6:45Speaker 2: But I just didn't realize it's such a as a
- 6:47Speaker 2: macro outlook on it.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I think that the turnovers we think we've maybe solved
- 6:53Speaker 1: or we've seen enough to maybe prove that we are
- 6:56Speaker 1: moving in the right direction. There big games, we got
- 7:01Speaker 1: one like that win against Colorado and that performance. I'm
- 7:05Speaker 1: not saying how good Colorado might be, but at the
- 7:08Speaker 1: same time, like it was a big game on a
- 7:10Speaker 1: big stage on national television.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Now wait time time out real quick, do you guys,
- 7:15Speaker 4: I'm guessing what your answer to be here. Do you
- 7:17Speaker 4: guys feel like this is this a bigger game or
- 7:19Speaker 4: the card game was bigger Colorado?
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Colorado definitely felt bigger, just as far as the
- 7:27Speaker 1: hype in the in the game.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Wanted to be Colorado way more than I want to
- 7:32Speaker 3: beat Illinois.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why it was number one most important on
- 7:36Speaker 1: all of our preseason.
- 7:38Speaker 3: That was interesting when you have that list. I was
- 7:40Speaker 3: curious where we had Illinois ranked because you.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Definite don't expect it being a ranked matchup.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I feel like it pretty high. I think I do
- 7:50Speaker 1: have it here. Maybe I feel like I was hired.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Originally thought it was going to be.
- 7:55Speaker 1: The last big thing is winning close games, and that
- 8:03Speaker 1: is still to be determined. We haven't had to have one,
- 8:09Speaker 1: even the ones we had last year. Guess what we
- 8:12Speaker 1: lost them. We are five and twenty four in one
- 8:17Speaker 1: score games in the last twenty nine.
- 8:20Speaker 3: That's so bad.
- 8:21Speaker 1: We might not have one this week. Like the pointspread
- 8:24Speaker 1: is not us by nine, so it's not projecting us there.
- 8:28Speaker 1: But at the same time, when we get in that situation,
- 8:33Speaker 1: Husker fans all want to see, can we put together
- 8:37Speaker 1: the drive that when we need to go downscore touchdown?
- 8:40Speaker 1: Can we get a stop when we need to get
- 8:41Speaker 1: a stop? Can we not turn the ball over? Can
- 8:43Speaker 1: we not have a stupid penalty? Can we punt the
- 8:45Speaker 1: ball the right way? Can we not on side kick it?
- 8:48Speaker 1: How else have we lost? There's been there's been a
- 8:53Speaker 1: lot like we need to see can we can we
- 8:56Speaker 1: win a close game? So, and that's not a secret,
- 8:59Speaker 1: that's pretty well known to the entire country. Basically the
- 9:05Speaker 1: Nebraska has not been able to come through in these
- 9:09Speaker 1: one score games. So I think that's what we need
- 9:12Speaker 1: to see. And I do believe whether it's this week
- 9:14Speaker 1: or in near weeks like we're we will have to
- 9:17Speaker 1: win some of these games to meet these expectations and
- 9:22Speaker 1: call them ceilings over the next few weeks.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Well, people must be throwing a lot of money Illinois
- 9:30Speaker 4: because now it's down seven and a half.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Really because I saw I saw nine. I saw nine
- 9:38Speaker 1: when I just checked about ten minutes ago.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Well, we got to battle the books here, but.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Seven and a half, the CBS still has it at nine.
- 9:47Speaker 1: So yeah, that I do think the line's high, just
- 9:51Speaker 1: at like it feels like a one score game to
- 9:54Speaker 1: me that I think we should win, but it feels
- 9:59Speaker 1: high to over a touchdown. I think Illinois is going
- 10:03Speaker 1: to be the best football team we've played so far
- 10:05Speaker 1: this year with what they have. And we'll get into
- 10:07Speaker 1: their personnel and here in a bit, but I do
- 10:11Speaker 1: think that the money, rightfully so could be going on Illinois.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I don't want to bet it, but.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I feel that nine's a lot. I'd probably put mine
- 10:26Speaker 3: in Illinois too. At nine.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Yeah, are you are you sure they're better in Colorado?
- 10:33Speaker 4: They haven't played anybody yet, They've the opponents they played
- 10:36Speaker 4: are three and six.
- 10:39Speaker 1: That's my thought just looking at them and what they got.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think they have the high end,
- 10:45Speaker 1: high end talent that Colorado had, but I think top
- 10:48Speaker 1: to bottom they're a better team. I think they're a
- 10:49Speaker 1: better coached football team. A lot of respect for Brett
- 10:53Speaker 1: Bilima and ruled us too, and he talked about that
- 10:57Speaker 1: at lengths in his press conference on Monday, speaking about
- 11:01Speaker 1: how Illinois is a mere image of what we try
- 11:06Speaker 1: to do as a program, and I think there's a
- 11:09Speaker 1: lot of truth in that. When I went out there
- 11:11Speaker 1: a few years ago and Beelim his first year and
- 11:14Speaker 1: just watching him how he manages and controls his team,
- 11:19Speaker 1: it's pretty impressive. Now he is in year four, I believe,
- 11:24Speaker 1: and at this point in a coach like that, at
- 11:27Speaker 1: a school like that, you start to figure out if
- 11:31Speaker 1: it's going to work here a long term, are you
- 11:34Speaker 1: able to sustain success and then take that next step
- 11:38Speaker 1: like Illinois has been right around what the six and six,
- 11:41Speaker 1: seven and five, five and seven mark the past few years,
- 11:45Speaker 1: which has been better than what they have had before.
- 11:48Speaker 1: They historically were one of the worst teams in the
- 11:52Speaker 1: Big Ten in the last twenty years, so they've gotten better.
- 11:54Speaker 1: But our guys continuing to buy into Illinois. There seems
- 11:58Speaker 1: to be some hype right now they're ranked. I think
- 12:01Speaker 1: they're a better football team, but it's gonna be a
- 12:04Speaker 1: test for them coming to Lincoln because we're in the
- 12:06Speaker 1: same boat. And we are actually in year two of
- 12:09Speaker 1: a coach that we really believe in right now, and
- 12:12Speaker 1: it's showing all signs of that.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I'll go Fordak, I don't.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Yeah, Brett Mielman, I do think is one of the
- 12:21Speaker 4: best coaches. I'd say prime in the nation.
- 12:26Speaker 5: I don't. I mean, I don't know if I go
- 12:28Speaker 5: that far. Big ten, Okay, we'll go big ten. First off,
- 12:32Speaker 5: all the restaurants stocked up enough for him to come
- 12:34Speaker 5: to town anyway.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Anyway, I don't know why Wisconsin ever got rid of him.
- 12:43Speaker 4: I was talking to somebody before this. Do you think
- 12:46Speaker 4: right now Wisconsin would take Luke Fickle or Brett Beilane
- 12:49Speaker 4: as their coach. I think he sets Wiscon's program better.
- 12:51Speaker 4: But I don't know what you guys think.
- 12:54Speaker 3: I think that they would take him back. Yep, not
- 12:56Speaker 3: tak him back. I mean, they're not going to fire
- 12:58Speaker 3: Fickle and then hire him back. But if they could
- 13:01Speaker 3: go back and undo the firing. Now, if I remember correctly,
- 13:03Speaker 3: it sounded like it was more of a power struggle.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Ad wanted too much say in the program. Belamo wasn't
- 13:10Speaker 3: letting Bilama spread his wings sort of things. Why he left.
- 13:13Speaker 2: So I don't think there was ever really any doubt
- 13:15Speaker 2: that it was gonna end in a little bit of
- 13:17Speaker 2: a divorce.
- 13:18Speaker 3: But I think Blamo has been better off serving in Wisconsin.
- 13:23Speaker 1: He went from Wisconsin to Arkansas where it did not
- 13:28Speaker 1: work out there, and then now at Illinois. I think
- 13:32Speaker 1: what happened at Wisconsin though it's kind of similar to
- 13:37Speaker 1: where his situation is here at Illinois where and it's
- 13:40Speaker 1: similar to bo Polini's situation too, where Wisconsin was good
- 13:47Speaker 1: and they had some pretty good years I would say,
- 13:49Speaker 1: maybe even better than Polini because they actually maybe they
- 13:52Speaker 1: didn't win one I don't know while he was there
- 13:54Speaker 1: at a conference title, but like he just got stagnant there,
- 13:59Speaker 1: Like they were successful, they were winning nine games a year,
- 14:02Speaker 1: but they weren't taking that next step and elevating themselves
- 14:06Speaker 1: to a national title contender. So I think there's that
- 14:11Speaker 1: story there as well. And similarly where he's out of Illinois,
- 14:14Speaker 1: I don't know what that means, Like how you read
- 14:16Speaker 1: into that is does that make you a bad coach
- 14:18Speaker 1: or a no? I think you're still a very solid
- 14:22Speaker 1: good coach, Like I think Bieloman leads programs very well
- 14:27Speaker 1: and in the right way, so it's going to be
- 14:31Speaker 1: a challenge. Friday Rule had an interesting comment too, talked
- 14:35Speaker 1: about us going from being the hunter to the hunted
- 14:43Speaker 1: once you start getting better and now that we're ranked.
- 14:48Speaker 1: What do you guys think of that comment?
- 14:54Speaker 3: Gosh, it's tough to say, because I always feel like
- 14:56Speaker 3: we've been a little bit the hunted just because we were.
- 14:59Speaker 3: I think we're one of the those programs that were
- 15:00Speaker 3: really good for a long time and now everyone kind
- 15:02Speaker 3: of hates us. I don't know if that's just the
- 15:04Speaker 3: Nebraska fan like US burst the world, because I don't
- 15:07Speaker 3: really think that's not how I think, but I do
- 15:10Speaker 3: think that there is probably a general disdain for the
- 15:12Speaker 3: brand of just like how you guys always think you're
- 15:15Speaker 3: good but you're not sort of energy. But I mean,
- 15:21Speaker 3: he's right, but that's more of like a player mentality
- 15:23Speaker 3: of hey, don't think you're better than you actually are.
- 15:26Speaker 3: That's when you start underestimating teams and then that's how
- 15:28Speaker 3: they get you off on a bad day.
- 15:32Speaker 4: That ranking or those numbers in front of your name
- 15:35Speaker 4: definitely makes you the hunted. When you come say come
- 15:37Speaker 4: for due next week, you're un ranked. It's not they
- 15:40Speaker 4: aren't inspired up. I feel like it makes teams like
- 15:44Speaker 4: and all those guys more fire playing ranked opponent, I
- 15:47Speaker 4: feel like it hypes everyone up more when you're ranked.
- 15:49Speaker 4: So yeah, I feel like you are the hunt Hunted Now.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily go to say we're, you know,
- 15:57Speaker 1: the biggest Hunted team out there. But at the same time, Austin,
- 16:02Speaker 1: I actually liked your comment because I think that gets
- 16:04Speaker 1: overlooked a lot. I do think opposing teams want to
- 16:07Speaker 1: be Nebraska because of the brand that we've had for years,
- 16:12Speaker 1: and there's no fault in that, I guess on our end.
- 16:15Speaker 1: But at the same time, it makes a little tougher
- 16:17Speaker 1: and then when you have Scott Frost thrown out comments,
- 16:19Speaker 1: it adds additional targets to make you even more of
- 16:22Speaker 1: the hunted. That doesn't help it all either, especially when
- 16:24Speaker 1: you're not very good and then you really don't win,
- 16:26Speaker 1: and then you really look like idiots. So I think
- 16:29Speaker 1: there's a big spiral effect there that made us a
- 16:32Speaker 1: little bit of a laughingstock for a while. I think
- 16:34Speaker 1: the respect is coming back, and so to rules comment,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I think the respected Hunted piece is getting there. I
- 16:43Speaker 1: wouldn't go to say we're there yet. But yeah, rankings,
- 16:46Speaker 1: I mean, it's funny they cut rankings off at twenty
- 16:48Speaker 1: five and then you really don't know anybody after that,
- 16:51Speaker 1: even just putting someone twenty four to Illinois and yeah,
- 16:56Speaker 1: putting Illinois in there, Like I wanted Illinois to be
- 16:58Speaker 1: ranked for that reason, Like I wanted our guys to
- 17:01Speaker 1: be like, Okay, Illinois, they're top twenty five team. Whether
- 17:05Speaker 1: they are quality wise or not, I don't know, but
- 17:08Speaker 1: it does open your eyes a little bit when that
- 17:10Speaker 1: numbers in front of your name. Hopefully we're here to
- 17:12Speaker 1: stay for a while.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Another another thing that makes you hunt, I feel like,
- 17:18Speaker 4: is when you have a top quarterback, like while people
- 17:22Speaker 4: want to people hear his name all the time and
- 17:24Speaker 4: it's all over the place, and that I feel like
- 17:26Speaker 4: that makes you more hunter too. When he comes into town,
- 17:29Speaker 4: which speaking of that later on episode, I want to
- 17:31Speaker 4: have a talk about him, but we'll keep going back
- 17:33Speaker 4: Illino way.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Well let's just do it now, I guess as we
- 17:36Speaker 1: start our Illinois talk. So Illinois mentioned three to OHO.
- 17:43Speaker 1: They are coached by Burt Brett Bielima. Twenty one to
- 17:47Speaker 1: nineteen is the record here. Illinois We'll start with their defense,
- 17:52Speaker 1: so they run very multiple style scheme. Defensive coordinators Aaron
- 18:01Speaker 1: Henry in his second year Illinois defense is really really
- 18:04Speaker 1: strong two years ago with Ryan Walters, who is now
- 18:07Speaker 1: at Purdue. I took a pretty big step back last
- 18:10Speaker 1: year and now they are said to be getting back
- 18:17Speaker 1: to where they were a couple of years ago. But
- 18:18Speaker 1: the way they're doing it is very complex, to say
- 18:23Speaker 1: the least. And Walter's in a very complex defense too.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Where they're they're playing in mixing and man and zone,
- 18:28Speaker 1: a lot of different alignments. Their base ish alignment is
- 18:33Speaker 1: like a three to four front, but we're gonna see
- 18:35Speaker 1: it all when we get out there. Their defense is
- 18:39Speaker 1: very experienced. They're out of their starting projected starting eleven
- 18:44Speaker 1: all juniors and seniors, but two guys. It's all upperclassmen.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Two guys in the secondary are sophomores. So I do
- 18:51Speaker 1: think that there are holes that we can poke in
- 18:54Speaker 1: this defense, but the question is how we are going
- 18:57Speaker 1: to do it. With their offense, we've seen more of
- 19:01Speaker 1: a past heavy focus. We've seen the run mixed in.
- 19:06Speaker 1: We don't know how much we've really wanted to show,
- 19:09Speaker 1: but regardless, it's all been led by the head guy
- 19:13Speaker 1: Dylan Royola, and he's looked good like he's looks solid
- 19:16Speaker 1: through three games and what we were hoping was more
- 19:20Speaker 1: of a field general game manager type approach, but still
- 19:23Speaker 1: has those opportunities for big time plays.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Dak, let's hear it.
- 19:30Speaker 3: I want to hear what you're built it out so.
- 19:34Speaker 5: Now better it has nothing, It has nothing to do
- 19:36Speaker 5: about ill that's fine.
- 19:38Speaker 1: I just talked about that's your lead.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Didn't go, Okay, here we go. So this has been
- 19:43Speaker 5: part of my takes.
- 19:44Speaker 4: It's based on every episode talk now about him acts
- 19:48Speaker 4: like mahomes and every everyone of them said screepy besides
- 19:53Speaker 4: one person, but that story behind that anyway, everyone says
- 19:56Speaker 4: it's creepy. What do you guys think about that? Like
- 19:59Speaker 4: he's he's trying like a spinning image of him, he's
- 20:02Speaker 4: trying to beat. I think it's a little creepy.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Why tell me the why behind it?
- 20:08Speaker 3: No one cares exact like MJ.
- 20:12Speaker 5: I think it's just fucking weird.
- 20:13Speaker 4: How everything he does exactly like him, like everything cut,
- 20:20Speaker 4: his haircut is all his game. Attari wears it's pregame war.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Everything's like him.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Now he did say, is he had his haircut a
- 20:29Speaker 1: long long time?
- 20:30Speaker 5: Yeah, Okay, so.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I don't care, you know, Like I said, no one
- 20:38Speaker 2: cared when Cobe emulated MJ.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Yeah. My take on it is, I mean, Mahomes is
- 20:43Speaker 1: obviously right now the greatest quarterback in the entire nation
- 20:50Speaker 1: right now, and if you want to mirror the guy,
- 20:54Speaker 1: like go ahead. I think the creepy part was getting
- 20:58Speaker 1: people as he's kind of doing it quietly, like he's
- 21:02Speaker 1: not really coming out in publicly saying like Mahomes is
- 21:05Speaker 1: my idol, like I'm you know, I'm trying to follow
- 21:09Speaker 1: the best quarterback in the world, you know he is.
- 21:12Speaker 1: There's like so many little things I don't know, like, yeah,
- 21:15Speaker 1: I think people have Probably the creepiness comes in as
- 21:19Speaker 1: they think he's like probably practicing pregame rituals in front
- 21:22Speaker 1: of you know, you know nobody he like you know
- 21:25Speaker 1: what I mean, Like that's where it might become the
- 21:27Speaker 1: creepy conversation if he is doing that. But as far
- 21:33Speaker 1: as the acting and the looking, like I if his
- 21:38Speaker 1: gameplay resembles even half of it, like I'm.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Happy, Yeah, I feel there is part of it, Like
- 21:48Speaker 3: you know, if he's doing all the exact same things,
- 21:50Speaker 3: but he's a like a black dude, like a black
- 21:53Speaker 3: black dude. Like no one's gonna be like, oh man,
- 21:56Speaker 3: this is kind of creepy. But it's because he looks
- 22:00Speaker 3: like Mahomes and that's kind of weird.
- 22:02Speaker 1: And so yeah, to that point, I don't know that
- 22:04Speaker 1: we need to talk about this forever. But is he
- 22:07Speaker 1: is he shaping his body like forming him in the
- 22:10Speaker 1: you know what I mean lifting weights? You know, is
- 22:13Speaker 1: he trying to look like my Homes in that sense too,
- 22:15Speaker 1: or is that just naturally how things are happening. He
- 22:22Speaker 1: I guess it doesn't talk like him yet, so that's good.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Mahomes does a very unique voice. So I think as
- 22:33Speaker 1: long you know, as as long as it he's performing
- 22:37Speaker 1: and playing well, Like I really, I think the second
- 22:40Speaker 1: that he starts, you know, message like looking like an idiot, like,
- 22:45Speaker 1: he's gonna look like an idiot because he's trying to
- 22:46Speaker 1: emulate the best quarterback that's out there. But as of
- 22:49Speaker 1: right now, it's a fun talking point. I think it's
- 22:51Speaker 1: going to continue. Like regardless of it's.
- 22:54Speaker 3: A blonde girlfriend named Brittany born Skylar, you know, that's
- 22:59Speaker 3: gonna start to get real weird.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Were we jokingly made the comparisons, I think back in
- 23:04Speaker 1: the spring and people kind of saw it. But it's good.
- 23:06Speaker 1: It's guys, it's going to continue to ramp up. And
- 23:08Speaker 1: it does sound like to Mahomes and him are at
- 23:11Speaker 1: least in conversation, like they've done workouts together. So it's
- 23:14Speaker 1: also not just some random dude that is doing to
- 23:18Speaker 1: try to get mahomes attention like that naturally is. But
- 23:21Speaker 1: he has a relationship with Mahomes two and he knows him,
- 23:25Speaker 1: so that also helps. Yeah, Now, Dak, tell me what
- 23:34Speaker 1: he has to do to beat Illinois.
- 23:38Speaker 4: Just manage the game. You beat him last year with
- 23:42Speaker 4: God damn was it? No, it's Hartburd you mean him
- 23:45Speaker 4: last year at Hartburg.
- 23:46Speaker 5: You gotta think.
- 23:47Speaker 4: All you gotta do is manage the game and not
- 23:49Speaker 4: be down with the ball. Just play it smart. I mean,
- 23:52Speaker 4: their quarterback will get into him, but he's way better.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Their offensive better.
- 23:55Speaker 5: But just manage the game. If you can be with Harburg,
- 23:57Speaker 5: you should be able to be in with all.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Don't throw much picks, just got their play smart, throw
- 24:03Speaker 4: the throws that are there for you, and don't force
- 24:05Speaker 4: the ball.
- 24:08Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure last year we just ran the ball
- 24:10Speaker 3: down their throats.
- 24:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I think.
- 24:14Speaker 3: You did.
- 24:15Speaker 5: But I think Harbor played decent though.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Harbar had a lot of runs, a lot of quarterback
- 24:20Speaker 1: designed runs and and we had some big plays last
- 24:24Speaker 1: year that really helped.
- 24:26Speaker 5: That was a Friday night too, it was on the road.
- 24:31Speaker 3: As far as like defensive, their defense against our offense,
- 24:36Speaker 3: I think it's gonna gotta be one again, kind of
- 24:39Speaker 3: like last year, where we just we want to control
- 24:42Speaker 3: the ball. We don't want to give them an opportunity
- 24:45Speaker 3: to set up offense. I'm not sad.
- 24:47Speaker 1: None of their.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Their defense is good. It's big, so I mean, they
- 24:56Speaker 3: could be issues, but I think I honestly think that
- 24:58Speaker 3: they they don't like match up well in the sense
- 25:00Speaker 3: of what they're good at is what we're good at
- 25:04Speaker 3: is just physically and talent level wise, across the board,
- 25:08Speaker 3: I feel like we're pretty similar except for we probably
- 25:10Speaker 3: have a little bit of a better our quarterbacks probably
- 25:13Speaker 3: better than their defensive unit.
- 25:15Speaker 2: As like a I'm trying to think of this as.
- 25:17Speaker 3: A scale, but our quarterback probably tipsed it a little
- 25:21Speaker 3: more in our favorite of our offense versus their defense.
- 25:24Speaker 1: So what I'm curious to see and I don't know
- 25:28Speaker 1: if it'll happen this game, but when we're faced with
- 25:31Speaker 1: a little bit of adversity, our offense has a couple possessions,
- 25:34Speaker 1: it stalls. And I know people might argue that that
- 25:36Speaker 1: happened in the second half of the past couple of games.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I think our approach was pretty set in stone. Given
- 25:42Speaker 1: the score. I want to know what style? What are
- 25:46Speaker 1: we running when the scores ten to seven in the
- 25:50Speaker 1: third quarter, right, what does our offense look like? And
- 25:56Speaker 1: again second half of Colorado better team. But once we
- 26:01Speaker 1: got up fourteen nothing. I don't want to say you
- 26:05Speaker 1: start playing not to lose, but your game plan and
- 26:08Speaker 1: your approach is to how you're attacking that Colorado defense
- 26:11Speaker 1: is very different than if that game is fourteen to
- 26:14Speaker 1: fourteen in the second quarter. So we don't know. Still
- 26:18Speaker 1: really against a more comparable opponent, what we're going to
- 26:23Speaker 1: run our first couple of drives and all of the
- 26:27Speaker 1: games have gone well. We have been very efficient offensively.
- 26:31Speaker 2: It's not been Listen, we haven't tried to be aggressive.
- 26:35Speaker 3: You're right, we've been. We haven't.
- 26:36Speaker 1: We haven't had to. It hasn't had to be flashy.
- 26:39Speaker 1: It just has been and maybe we don't ever need
- 26:41Speaker 1: to be and that would be great, but I want
- 26:43Speaker 1: to know how much of the run game is involved.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Can we get the run game involved in the third
- 26:49Speaker 1: quarter when we need to have a drive, you know,
- 26:52Speaker 1: if we're down by a touchdown or three points early
- 26:55Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter, Like, what does our offense look like?
- 26:57Speaker 1: How aggressive are we attacking the all down the field?
- 27:00Speaker 1: I mean, we don't know when.
- 27:02Speaker 3: We decided to be aggressive, Like I mean, the last
- 27:04Speaker 3: two games, two minute drills, end up game drives, we've
- 27:08Speaker 3: been able to move the ball when we're then in
- 27:11Speaker 3: those situations, we're actively like, hey, we're gonna be aggressed.
- 27:13Speaker 3: We try to get the ball downfield. And we have
- 27:15Speaker 3: successfully done that the last two games against Colorado we
- 27:18Speaker 3: did it twice, and then last week we did it
- 27:21Speaker 3: as well. So it gives you some hope that like, hey,
- 27:24Speaker 3: we have that in our pocket. We just haven't had
- 27:25Speaker 3: to do that. We're trying not to lose these games
- 27:27Speaker 3: for sure. Yeah, I mean we've been three for three
- 27:29Speaker 3: before halftime. That's been great.
- 27:30Speaker 1: So that's also what I wouldn't call your base offense either,
- 27:36Speaker 1: that's your your your hurry up packages. As rule was
- 27:40Speaker 1: going through and naming all the different ones they have.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I don't know what this is gonna look like. I'm
- 27:46Speaker 1: hopeful that our run game is gonna get going, and
- 27:50Speaker 1: if we can get on top of them early and
- 27:51Speaker 1: start strong again, we can just do the same thing
- 27:54Speaker 1: we've done so far this year, but be ready for
- 27:57Speaker 1: some adversity to hit and we'll see how we respond.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I think that will be the big question, and that's
- 28:04Speaker 1: what's kind of taken me back from my big nine
- 28:06Speaker 1: to three, ten and two talk from earlier this week,
- 28:11Speaker 1: is what will happen when we face adversity. One other
- 28:17Speaker 1: quick note on our offense. Michel Mazouk is not playing.
- 28:23Speaker 1: We don't know why.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Do you see he's listed as a second stringer on
- 28:28Speaker 3: the death chart.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Yes, but he's not playing.
- 28:31Speaker 2: He's not He's ideally he won't be needed to play.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Personal issues, So we don't know what that means. I
- 28:38Speaker 1: hope there's we hear more about.
- 28:40Speaker 5: We might not soil. He got in a little trouble.
- 28:42Speaker 5: That's kind of what it sounds like.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Well, yeah, and that I'm a little bit upset he's
- 28:46Speaker 1: not playing, like I think it better be something bad
- 28:49Speaker 1: and worthy in a game like this, to not play,
- 28:51Speaker 1: and we said, I mean, we talked about oh, Jamari
- 28:58Speaker 1: Butler not playing on the defense of side just because
- 29:01Speaker 1: of who the opponent was. I hope it's big flipping
- 29:04Speaker 1: over to the other side of the ball here. Luke
- 29:07Speaker 1: Altmeyer is their quarterback UH six and five junior. They
- 29:12Speaker 1: got two explosive guys on the end and Pat Bryant
- 29:15Speaker 1: and Zakari Franklin. Zakari Franklin transferred from Texas San Antonio
- 29:21Speaker 1: Tayden Svegan sixty three to two fifty. Those dimensions sound
- 29:25Speaker 1: pretty familiar to what we saw in Northern Iowa. He's
- 29:28Speaker 1: a running back averaging four point one yards of carry.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Offensive line, very veteran, all upperclassmen, juniors and seniors across
- 29:35Speaker 1: the board there. Luke Altmeyer can run a little bit.
- 29:40Speaker 1: They're very spread like offenses led by Barry Lunny junior
- 29:47Speaker 1: in his third season. Their offense should be better, Dak,
- 29:52Speaker 1: As you.
- 29:52Speaker 4: Mentioned, Altmeyer's improved a lot. I mean last year he
- 29:57Speaker 4: threw thirteen touchdowns, ten picks. He doesn't want to pick.
- 29:59Speaker 4: All year yet six touchdowns, no picks, and I didn't
- 30:03Speaker 4: think he's gonna can't leave.
- 30:03Speaker 5: They ran back with him this year. But he's improved
- 30:06Speaker 5: a lot. I'll give it to him.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Just I mean, I amn't playing anybody yet, but hell,
- 30:11Speaker 4: he's he's already almost halfway his touchdowns in zero picks
- 30:14Speaker 4: three games.
- 30:14Speaker 5: He's he's pretty good. Now.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean last year we beat them because we
- 30:23Speaker 3: stopped the run. They only ran it, let's see, nineteen times,
- 30:27Speaker 3: and so Altmyarer threw like basically fifty times last game,
- 30:31Speaker 3: and so we won because Altmeyer should be throwing the
- 30:33Speaker 3: ball fifty times. But it feels like they kind of
- 30:35Speaker 3: figured that out a little bit with their running back.
- 30:37Speaker 1: This year, and they were playing from behind last year.
- 30:39Speaker 1: That's the most important thing.
- 30:40Speaker 3: That's true, they were playing from behind. But I think
- 30:46Speaker 3: it's gonna be the same thing. If we can just
- 30:48Speaker 3: contain the run and make Almyer win, I think we
- 30:51Speaker 3: have a good chance.
- 30:53Speaker 2: He's improved, but not that improved.
- 30:57Speaker 5: The he's a quarterback you want playing from behind if
- 30:59Speaker 5: you're the opponent.
- 31:00Speaker 1: The big thing that I'm looking for is can we
- 31:03Speaker 1: force Altmeyer into a couple of turnovers or their offense
- 31:07Speaker 1: in general? They are plus eight and the turnover margin
- 31:10Speaker 1: it's second in the country right now. They did force
- 31:12Speaker 1: four turnovers in the Kansas game that helped them win.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Our defense has to continue to force turnovers at least
- 31:21Speaker 1: won a game in games like.
- 31:23Speaker 3: This, So.
- 31:25Speaker 1: We hope we can get some pressure back there on
- 31:28Speaker 1: pass plays. But I think stopping the run most importantly
- 31:31Speaker 1: early on is key. Like you said, Austin, that is
- 31:35Speaker 1: going to be very big if we don't do that,
- 31:39Speaker 1: and rule thinks it will be to it. It's going
- 31:41Speaker 1: to be a smash mouth type of game, back and forth,
- 31:44Speaker 1: probably low scoring. I think the spread or over unders
- 31:47Speaker 1: forty three and a half. If we win, it'll be
- 31:52Speaker 1: because we stop their run. It's like the number one
- 31:54Speaker 1: thing that I think we should be watching because, like
- 31:57Speaker 1: you said, Altmeyer's an okay passer, and I think he's
- 31:59Speaker 1: got some weapons outside, but Bert Bielima's identity is running
- 32:06Speaker 1: the football. That's what he wants to do. If they
- 32:08Speaker 1: get a lead on you, if they're up seventeen to ten,
- 32:11Speaker 1: you know exactly what's gonna happen if they can want
- 32:13Speaker 1: to run it. We don't want to be in that spot.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Yeah, but they're definitely they feel like a three piece offense.
- 32:19Speaker 3: They have a stead running back and two stud receivers.
- 32:22Speaker 3: And that's kind of it.
- 32:24Speaker 1: An offensive line sounds like we've heard that before Colorado.
- 32:29Speaker 2: That's true all right.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Time, Let's do Survivor picks first, real quick, we'll rattle
- 32:36Speaker 1: them off. We're all still alive. I'm a little bit
- 32:42Speaker 1: interested in if this is going to be too easy,
- 32:47Speaker 1: but I think Dak's gonna make it pretty hard on
- 32:48Speaker 1: himself with the teams he picked. So my four this week,
- 32:51Speaker 1: I took South Carolina against Akron, I took Indiana over Charlotte.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I took Iowa State over Arkansas State, and and taking
- 33:00Speaker 1: Pittsburgh over Youngstown State.
- 33:04Speaker 3: I also took Indiana and South Carolina. I went out
- 33:06Speaker 3: on a leven, took sam Houston over New Mexico State,
- 33:11Speaker 3: and Clumpson over m C State. I didn't really want
- 33:13Speaker 3: to take cumps in this early, but.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Whatever NC states looked bad, states looked bad.
- 33:20Speaker 4: I took LSU over uc LA, Missouri over Vanderbilt, and
- 33:26Speaker 4: then the other two an they played Penn State plays
- 33:28Speaker 4: somebody you know, Dan play Somebody oh No, Damn plays Miami, Ohio.
- 33:33Speaker 4: I'm I'm hoping that you guys drop out soon because
- 33:36Speaker 4: I'm running out of good teams.
- 33:37Speaker 5: Like that was my that's my strategy.
- 33:42Speaker 4: I mean, I still got some big dog left, but
- 33:43Speaker 4: it's going down to like I'm gonna say, start taking underdogs.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I think you'll be fine for a few weeks.
- 33:50Speaker 4: I got like, I got like three weeks left to
- 33:52Speaker 4: me until it's gonna hit.
- 33:53Speaker 5: This ship's gonna hit the fan.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Dak. We didn't mention it on Sunday. You had a
- 34:00Speaker 1: pretty stellar weekend, going ten and five in week three,
- 34:07Speaker 1: your overall, your twenty five and twenty and one, on
- 34:11Speaker 1: your way to that seventy percent. You did not give
- 34:13Speaker 1: me a lock last week, so we got to remember
- 34:15Speaker 1: to do that.
- 34:17Speaker 5: I did. I remember that Boston College was my lock.
- 34:21Speaker 1: All right, Well give it to you two and one
- 34:23Speaker 1: on your locks.
- 34:24Speaker 5: I was looking back at that. I was like I
- 34:26Speaker 5: thought I did, and I had it on here it
- 34:27Speaker 5: was Boston College.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Okay, Well you got thirty seconds speak clearly for the
- 34:33Speaker 1: people to hear.
- 34:36Speaker 4: All right, I'll put my nuts on table one of
- 34:37Speaker 4: these picks. You guys can guess which one. All right,
- 34:39Speaker 4: here we go. Ready, let's go. All right, my first
- 34:43Speaker 4: all start with the Locke Utah minus two Florida Mississippi State.
- 34:47Speaker 5: On under fifteen and a half, Kansas.
- 34:50Speaker 4: Plus two and a half, Utah State minus six and
- 34:53Speaker 4: a half, Temple is awful, USC mins five, Virginia Tech
- 34:56Speaker 4: mine three and a half, Miami minus sixteen and a half,
- 34:59Speaker 4: cal plus two and a half, Minnesota plus two and
- 35:01Speaker 4: a half, Boston College at minus six and a half,
- 35:04Speaker 4: Purdue plus four and a half, North Texas MIAs nine,
- 35:07Speaker 4: Oklahoma money line, Washington minus ten and a half, lived
- 35:11Speaker 4: In minus.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Six Oklahoma money line. There you go.
- 35:17Speaker 4: Yep, that's when I put my nuts on the table,
- 35:21Speaker 4: gut start the podcast talking, and then not say that.
- 35:24Speaker 1: I have a suggestion for you for future. Ain't it
- 35:26Speaker 1: in the future, say who they're playing because I don't.
- 35:29Speaker 1: I'm trying to listen. Yeah, don't know a lot of
- 35:31Speaker 1: these teams. Who they're playing.
- 35:33Speaker 5: Yeah, next thing, I'm gonna write that down, because.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Who's Purdue playing to only be a four point dog?
- 35:41Speaker 5: They are playing? They are playing Let's see here. You know,
- 35:48Speaker 5: I don't know on this, Oh, Michigan State.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I think Oregon State. They're at Oregon State.
- 35:53Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, and Oregon State is awful but produce pretty
- 35:56Speaker 4: bad too, So we'll see about.
- 35:57Speaker 5: The one I really love is Utah State.
- 36:00Speaker 4: Mind six half over Temple Hammer That Temple's one of.
- 36:06Speaker 5: The worst teams in Nyton.
- 36:07Speaker 1: So then why didn't you make that your lock?
- 36:09Speaker 5: Because cam Rising's back for each other, they're also gonna
