Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Everyone's new favorite song, Where will Belly sign? Jim Bowden?
- 0:14Speaker 2: With this tweet this morning, Cody Bellinger is mulling over
- 0:17Speaker 2: multiple offers from multiple teams and is expected to make
- 0:21Speaker 2: a decision shortly. That does usually mean decision in the
- 0:26Speaker 2: next let's call it twenty four to seventy two hours,
- 0:31Speaker 2: right where there's a soft timeline on the player and
- 0:35Speaker 2: representation side. I don't want to say it always is
- 0:37Speaker 2: the case, but it is often the case.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 0:39Speaker 2: We started to hear the Kyle Tucker whispers last week,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and then within about twenty four to thirty six hours
- 0:47Speaker 2: the decision came. So I do think that we're going
- 0:49Speaker 2: to learn about Cody Bellinger's ultimate destination for the twenty
- 0:53Speaker 2: twenty six season in the next one to two days.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Mulling multiple offers to me aj and I know we've
- 1:02Speaker 2: talked about this a lot this week. This means I've
- 1:04Speaker 2: got the long term thing from the Yankees. I probably
- 1:08Speaker 2: have a short term offer from the Mets that is
- 1:11Speaker 2: at a higher yearly rate, and then a team like
- 1:15Speaker 2: the Blue Jays might fall in either category. My guess
- 1:19Speaker 2: is that they're in the longer term category and maybe
- 1:21Speaker 2: kind of a hybrid of both where they still give
- 1:23Speaker 2: you an opt out somewhere within that deal as well,
- 1:27Speaker 2: just naming three that I think they are likely in there.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Do we really think that they're in there?
- 1:32Speaker 3: No, I'm not saying that.
- 1:33Speaker 4: I'm just saying just as Susan Slusser, she said they
- 1:36Speaker 4: need a bat in the outfield that can play defense.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Really well, hm, that sounds like Cody Bellinger. Why not
- 1:44Speaker 4: do I said it kind of as a joke, but
- 1:46Speaker 4: why not do what they've done with Chapman and they
- 1:48Speaker 4: did it with Snell. I'll snow onto the Dodgers, But
- 1:50Speaker 4: the Dodgers have also done these short they just didn't
- 1:52Speaker 4: want to tucker right short term deal. The Mets did
- 1:55Speaker 4: it with Boba Schett. Why can't Why can't the Giants
- 1:57Speaker 4: go to Bellinger and be like, hey, we'll give you,
- 2:00Speaker 4: you know, four years one hundred and fifty with an
- 2:02Speaker 4: opt out after the first two years. I don't know,
- 2:05Speaker 4: just throwing random numbers out there to get them there though,
- 2:07Speaker 4: and get the fans excited.
- 2:08Speaker 2: They're also not near the luxury tax number as far
- 2:11Speaker 2: as I'm doing my math here, So I've got the
- 2:13Speaker 2: latest number pulled up there at two twelve. The luxury
- 2:17Speaker 2: tax number is I believe in the two forties. So
- 2:20Speaker 2: they're still well behind that number. And the point is
- 2:23Speaker 2: that's when you start to get taxed and some penalties
- 2:25Speaker 2: start to hit you. They're not even close to some
- 2:27Speaker 2: of the teams that are involved that end up paying
- 2:30Speaker 2: essentially double.
- 2:31Speaker 1: We go over this all the time, right.
- 2:32Speaker 2: The teams don't look at it as, hey, I sign
- 2:35Speaker 2: this player, I'm really putting double the money together against
- 2:39Speaker 2: my payroll. They spread it out right, Hey, this is
- 2:41Speaker 2: the responsibility of our whole payroll. But from a fan perspective,
- 2:44Speaker 2: that is how the money is laid out.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:46Speaker 2: If they go over that mark, right like the Mets,
- 2:48Speaker 2: for example, if they spend thirty five a year on Bellinger,
- 2:53Speaker 2: it's more like seventy five for this coming season.
- 2:56Speaker 1: The Giants don't have to deal with that.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Now.
- 2:58Speaker 2: The resources different rencheal is clearly there. Steve Cohen is
- 3:02Speaker 2: much more willing to spend. But it is a good
- 3:04Speaker 2: call for the sake of this exercise. I don't think
- 3:07Speaker 2: they're involved. So Kratz, what do you think if let's
- 3:11Speaker 2: say those are the three finalists, where do you think
- 3:14Speaker 2: Cody Goes? Does he go with the sexy new trend
- 3:16Speaker 2: of more money at a shorter term and still the guarantee.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Let's say it's three years, but he gets a lot
- 3:24Speaker 2: more on the average annual value like a Boba Schett gets.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Or does he go with.
- 3:28Speaker 2: The Bronx safe I mean one spot, I don't have
- 3:32Speaker 2: to worry about anything else. They'll probably give him a
- 3:34Speaker 2: no trade clause if he wants, and he doesn't have
- 3:36Speaker 2: to deal with these opt out contracts because he has
- 3:39Speaker 2: been a part of them in the past. He's made
- 3:41Speaker 2: good money off of them. So just curious where you
- 3:43Speaker 2: think he lands here.
- 3:45Speaker 5: I think it's I think it's the Yankees. I think
- 3:47Speaker 5: it's a Bronx. And I think the worst thing for
- 3:49Speaker 5: the Yankees would be if the Mets would be getting
- 3:52Speaker 5: in a bidding war with them and they said. The
- 3:54Speaker 5: Yankees have come out and said, we're not going to
- 3:56Speaker 5: get into bidding war. Our offer is our offer, and
- 3:58Speaker 5: it's a very good offer. So you can't lose. You
- 4:02Speaker 5: can't lose Juan Soto and Cody Bellinger in two back
- 4:05Speaker 5: to back years. I just think I don't think other
- 4:10Speaker 5: teams are gonna be willing to go the guaranteed amount
- 4:14Speaker 5: that he's getting from the Yankees. Now somebody steps in
- 4:17Speaker 5: and does that'd be great for Cody if to beat it,
- 4:21Speaker 5: you know, the blue Jays have to beat the Yankees.
- 4:23Speaker 5: The blue Jays have to beat the Yankees offer, in
- 4:25Speaker 5: my opinion, for him to go to a place where
- 4:27Speaker 5: he hasn't been yet. And it seems like all indications
- 4:32Speaker 5: seem like he really.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Liked playing in New York.
- 4:36Speaker 5: But the biggest thing for me is the fact that
- 4:39Speaker 5: I don't think there is I don't know any players
- 4:43Speaker 5: that are like, it's fine, I'll just continue to go
- 4:46Speaker 5: year for year. There was one guy who said I'm
- 4:48Speaker 5: going to go year to year forever, and he signed
- 4:50Speaker 5: a three year deal too. But like you can say
- 4:53Speaker 5: all you want, I just think Cody's been through it
- 4:55Speaker 5: so much that it seems like completely outsider's view and
- 4:59Speaker 5: I completely co completely wrong. I don't know Cody at all,
- 5:02Speaker 5: But it's time to not always be the guy that
- 5:06Speaker 5: has to prove it. There's there's some semblance of it's
- 5:10Speaker 5: a it's a free agent year. I got to prove
- 5:12Speaker 5: it as a guy who always had to prove it
- 5:15Speaker 5: in a different way, like I had to prove it
- 5:16Speaker 5: to stay on a roster. That part can get it
- 5:20Speaker 5: can get tiring, it can it can get like, Okay,
- 5:23Speaker 5: I got it.
- 5:24Speaker 3: It's got to be the next thing.
- 5:25Speaker 5: And it's like instead of getting like in a groove
- 5:27Speaker 5: that I think the Yankees deal is going to end
- 5:30Speaker 5: up being the best deal for him, and I think
- 5:32Speaker 5: that's what he wants in his career and he'll end
- 5:35Speaker 5: his career as a Yankee.
- 5:39Speaker 3: That guy who wanted one year deals, he's out of
- 5:40Speaker 3: baseball now too. Just definitely, people who don't know you
- 5:43Speaker 3: have to figure you have to figure out who that
- 5:45Speaker 3: person is. Huh.
- 5:46Speaker 1: You could say the name Voldemort, right, Voldemort.
- 5:50Speaker 3: That will not be named.
- 5:52Speaker 4: But anyway, I don't want to get I don't want
- 5:54Speaker 4: to get sued. I'm not saying it now you might.
- 5:58Speaker 4: That's so I didn't say it.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I don't care sue me.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Okay, But maybe Bellinger the Yankees just is what it's like,
- 6:05Speaker 4: it has to happen. It's like the one once when
- 6:07Speaker 4: the Yankees traded for one Soda that offseason. It was
- 6:10Speaker 4: it had to As soon as Ron Soda was put
- 6:12Speaker 4: out there, everyone's like, he has to go to the Yankees,
- 6:14Speaker 4: and it felt inevitable. Right, Well, that's what I feel like.
- 6:16Speaker 4: This Bellinger to the Yankees feels like it feels inevitable
- 6:20Speaker 4: because honestly, we've asked all the experts, Jim bow and
- 6:23Speaker 4: Ken Rosenthal, every expert we have on and nobody can
- 6:26Speaker 4: give us another team.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Yes they can, well, I mean Mets in Blue Jays.
- 6:29Speaker 4: But that we've actually heard as like the Yankees have said,
- 6:34Speaker 4: here's our offer, this is what we're giving them, and
- 6:38Speaker 4: the Blue Jays and the Mets. Yeah, but then the
- 6:40Speaker 4: Mets go signed, but Shet the blue Jays do some
- 6:42Speaker 4: other things.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Well what though, see that's the X factor.
- 6:45Speaker 3: I don't know. I just don't know.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Again, I'm not skull boards. I don't know.
- 6:50Speaker 1: That's my question.
- 6:51Speaker 2: So going back to another CBA thing, owners and the
- 6:56Speaker 2: league want as signing deadline, why because it was help
- 7:00Speaker 2: controls pricing and then baseb for two more months would
- 7:02Speaker 2: be what would were talking about today?
- 7:04Speaker 4: What did Eric just say on here, wait, but this
- 7:07Speaker 4: is when he goes you know, but listen, when he goes.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Year to year, they put pressure on me. So I
- 7:10Speaker 3: knew I had to perform. Can you imagine if there
- 7:12Speaker 3: was a signing deadline on January second.
- 7:14Speaker 4: How much pressure would be on the players and then
- 7:17Speaker 4: teams would just sit back and go, We're just gonna
- 7:19Speaker 4: offer every we your buddy one year five million, and
- 7:21Speaker 4: people are gonna have.
- 7:22Speaker 3: To take it.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Yeah, because you know what happened, because you know why,
- 7:25Speaker 4: because they have to sign by a January second and
- 7:27Speaker 4: they don't get to play this year.
- 7:29Speaker 3: So guys, it would be be unbelievably stupid.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Nobody likes a bloated cell phone bill. It can consume you,
- 7:37Speaker 2: it can take over, it can be very annoying. So
- 7:40Speaker 2: I know that twenty twenty five ended Crafts and that's
- 7:43Speaker 2: when you have your end of your sales, but there
- 7:45Speaker 2: actually is still one sale that is running until the
- 7:47Speaker 2: end of the month.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Mid Mobile, they still have their fifty percent off their
- 7:51Speaker 5: unlimited premium wireless offer that you got to go and
- 7:54Speaker 5: get and take advantage of it because it's not necessarily
- 7:57Speaker 5: going to.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Be around all the time.
- 7:59Speaker 2: An all plan to come with high speed data and
- 8:01Speaker 2: unlimited talk and text delivered on the nation's largest five
- 8:04Speaker 2: G network. Quit overspending on wireless with fifty percent off.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Unlimited Premium wireless plans start at fifteen bucks a month
- 8:11Speaker 2: at mintmobile dot com slash territory. That's mintmobile dot com
- 8:14Speaker 2: slash territory. Limited time offer upfront payment of forty five
- 8:17Speaker 2: dollars for three months, ninety dollars for six months, or
- 8:19Speaker 2: one hundred eighty dollars for twelve months. Plan required fifteen
- 8:22Speaker 2: dollars per month equivalent taxes and fees extra initial plan
- 8:25Speaker 2: term only. Over fifty gigabytes may slow a network is busy.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Capable device required, availability, speed and coverage varies see mintmobile
- 8:32Speaker 2: dot com. We could take a month off because nothing
- 8:34Speaker 2: would happen. It would be born. But anyway, the point
- 8:37Speaker 2: of me bringing this up is that, in addition to
- 8:40Speaker 2: all of the reasons why why, players and even fans
- 8:43Speaker 2: have listed that it would make sense. And I know
- 8:46Speaker 2: there are some people that are like, oh, I just
- 8:48Speaker 2: want to see the signings happen. Already they do happen.
- 8:50Speaker 2: They just trickle in. Owners change their minds. The Mets
- 8:54Speaker 2: can say whatever they want about Bobashet. They were not
- 8:56Speaker 2: super seriously into Bobashet until five seconds after they realized
- 9:00Speaker 2: they weren't getting Kyle Tucker. I could make the same
- 9:03Speaker 2: case for the Blue Jays and Cody Bellinger did we
- 9:06Speaker 2: hear them link to him, not much, all of a sudden,
- 9:09Speaker 2: I do think they're seriously involved in someone like Cody Bellinger. Right,
- 9:13Speaker 2: they are losing outfielders after this coming season, and Belly's
- 9:17Speaker 2: bat fits there. You know, They've created a really nice,
- 9:20Speaker 2: versatile lineup that they think depth wise, is going to
- 9:23Speaker 2: get them through the season. But one more piece really
- 9:25Speaker 2: puts them over the top. In my mind, they're already
- 9:28Speaker 2: I think the front runner in the American League East,
- 9:30Speaker 2: but this would really be the icing on the cake.
- 9:32Speaker 1: They were going for Kyle Tucker.
- 9:34Speaker 2: This is going to cost them less on a per
- 9:36Speaker 2: season basis for sure than Kyle Tucker. This crats is
- 9:40Speaker 2: why I think teams slash owners and front offices change
- 9:45Speaker 2: their mind or get involved in things very late in
- 9:47Speaker 2: an offseason. So if you take that away, then you
- 9:50Speaker 2: don't have that activity. Right if Bo had to signed
- 9:52Speaker 2: by whatever date, then the Mets aren't in on Bo.
- 9:55Speaker 2: So same concept here for the Blue Jays. All of
- 9:57Speaker 2: a sudden, he was more in like the here for
- 10:00Speaker 2: them in terms of interest, and I think he jumps
- 10:03Speaker 2: up and that's why it actually puts the Yankees in
- 10:05Speaker 2: a tougher spot for most of the off season. I
- 10:07Speaker 2: think the Yankees were like, we like you, we want you,
- 10:10Speaker 2: we think we have the best offer slash kind of
- 10:12Speaker 2: know we have the best offer, and then all of
- 10:14Speaker 2: a sudden, other teams emerge late and go, this is
- 10:17Speaker 2: the best guy available, and we didn't get someone in
- 10:19Speaker 2: Kyle Tucker who we really thought we had.
- 10:21Speaker 1: A good chance at.
- 10:22Speaker 2: So anyway, that's why I think the market changes and
- 10:26Speaker 2: we could get surprised.
- 10:27Speaker 1: The Blue Jays can easily beat the Yankees.
- 10:29Speaker 2: The one thing we've learned from these reports, unless they're
- 10:32Speaker 2: totally off, and I don't think they are, is that
- 10:34Speaker 2: the Yankees are sticking to their offer. They feel like
- 10:36Speaker 2: they've offered him something nice, and I agree with them
- 10:38Speaker 2: it is a nice offer. But that doesn't mean the
- 10:40Speaker 2: Blue Jays can't swoop in and say, cool, your best
- 10:43Speaker 2: offers five one sixty with some opt outs.
- 10:45Speaker 1: We'll give you six one point eighty five with more
- 10:49Speaker 1: opt outs.
- 10:50Speaker 2: And then he goes up there and says, hey, you
- 10:53Speaker 2: thought you were the only one dancing, but you're not.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Yeah, man, anytime you can have because situations change. Is
- 11:01Speaker 5: the biggest thing that you said, Scott, is the fact
- 11:03Speaker 5: that maybe the Blue Jays were like, oh, we made
- 11:06Speaker 5: a great offer to Kyle Tucker. No way he turns
- 11:10Speaker 5: down ten years, three hundred and fifty million. Well that
- 11:14Speaker 5: was less than a week ago. Now you got to change.
- 11:17Speaker 5: If we had a deadline, that deadline, that offer would
- 11:20Speaker 5: be made, he would sign, deadline would happen, and all
- 11:22Speaker 5: of a sudden, the Blue Jays wouldn't have a team.
- 11:25Speaker 5: So a deadline wouldn't help. Wouldn't help like you want to,
- 11:29Speaker 5: wouldn't help the teams who want to win because they
- 11:32Speaker 5: want to put the best players out there. And maybe
- 11:34Speaker 5: that's why Cody's like, you know what, I won't need
- 11:37Speaker 5: to make a decision. I'll just wait and see if
- 11:40Speaker 5: the Blue Jays who just missed out on the guy
- 11:42Speaker 5: who they thought was there one, I'll be there number
- 11:45Speaker 5: two choice, and maybe that offer that they originally made
- 11:50Speaker 5: goes up a little bit higher. It's a it's a
- 11:54Speaker 5: great it's a great dance. It's a great like you know,
- 11:57Speaker 5: back and forth.
- 11:58Speaker 3: And I come in the Blue.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Jays for being in on pretty much every top notch
- 12:06Speaker 5: free agent this offseason, and I command the Yankees for
- 12:10Speaker 5: not getting anything done this offseason but sticking to their guns.
- 12:14Speaker 5: On what they think is Cody Belly Cody Bellinger is worth.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Because there's a lot of teams that are like, well,
- 12:21Speaker 5: we'll do this, we'll do that. I know the Phillies,
- 12:24Speaker 5: they're like, hey, we're gonna give you market value. We're
- 12:28Speaker 5: gonna give you what you are worth. That's all fine
- 12:31Speaker 5: and dandy, as long as you're okay with not.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Losing him, not losing that player.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Here's my question, people that want to signing signing deadline. Okay,
- 12:42Speaker 4: let's say the signing deadlines January first. Who got hurt
- 12:46Speaker 4: yesterday or two days ago? Has on Kim? There's no
- 12:50Speaker 4: sign you can't sign anybody.
- 12:52Speaker 3: What do the Braves do? You have to make a trade.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's not easy. Teams are so annoying about
- 12:59Speaker 1: what we're saying that.
- 13:00Speaker 3: I wouldn't know what good does a signing deadline do.
- 13:02Speaker 4: If you that's your free agent, you sign him to
- 13:04Speaker 4: a free agent deal and he gets hurt after the
- 13:07Speaker 4: free or after the free agent deadline, what happens to
- 13:10Speaker 4: the guys who are after the free agent that I
- 13:12Speaker 4: have take the year off, They have to sign a
- 13:14Speaker 4: minor league deal, they have to sign what banana ball?
- 13:17Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Do you see like this is one of the because okay,
- 13:20Speaker 4: I'll say this, like, use I'll use Justin Verlander, Right,
- 13:23Speaker 4: I said, I saw him the other day and when
- 13:24Speaker 4: we talked to Ken, what he's waiting on somebody possibly
- 13:28Speaker 4: to get hurt. He doesn't want anyone to get hurt.
- 13:29Speaker 4: But let's say whoever, Like, I'll use Garrett Cole for example.
- 13:33Speaker 4: He got hurt in spring training last year.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:36Speaker 4: If someone like that gets hurt for the Yankees this year,
- 13:38Speaker 4: gets who they're gonna call? Justin Verlander? Hey, Justin, could
- 13:41Speaker 4: you be ready in three weeks to pitch in May
- 13:43Speaker 4: for us? Absolutely? Guys, Okay, boom, here you go. Here's
- 13:47Speaker 4: your one year whatever it is, ten, twelve, fifteen, whatever
- 13:49Speaker 4: they come to terms with.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Yeah, Pitchers should wait. Sometimes it hurts them. It hurts
- 13:54Speaker 2: many of them because they're not necessarily ready in spring training,
- 13:57Speaker 2: but we have so many arm injuries that it does
- 14:00Speaker 2: often benefit both sides to wait. Sometimes a team doesn't
- 14:04Speaker 2: have an opening, all of a sudden, they have an opening.
- 14:07Speaker 2: We oh my gosh, every time spring training starts up
- 14:09Speaker 2: and we get the TJ's, the TJ rush in the
- 14:12Speaker 2: first ten days this guy needs.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Once game start. They ran pp start. Oh yeah, that
- 14:17Speaker 3: was everybody.
- 14:19Speaker 5: I have one comment if you want to if you
- 14:20Speaker 5: want to suffice the fans who are saying, well, I want.
- 14:23Speaker 3: To know where they're going to go. Yeah, we all
- 14:25Speaker 3: want to know. But that's the exciting part of it.
- 14:28Speaker 5: If you want to, if you want to have a
- 14:30Speaker 5: deadline I would be in favor of a trade deadline
- 14:34Speaker 5: in the offseason. Your trades don't get done, then you
- 14:37Speaker 5: have to move on. You can't.
- 14:38Speaker 3: You can't trade to Freddy Parolta.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Now that could be a player's point of view, because
- 14:44Speaker 5: I think the ability to have somebody like if Trek
- 14:47Speaker 5: Scuba was out there, Freddy Peralta, who's a number one
- 14:51Speaker 5: like out there on the market. It's hurting Framber Valdez's
- 14:55Speaker 5: market may have even been hurting a little bit Rangers market. Well,
- 14:58Speaker 5: now Rangers signed, and the fact that they're under contracts
- 15:03Speaker 5: that are not negotiated in the free market like free agents,
- 15:07Speaker 5: teams view them as more valuable because free agents are
- 15:11Speaker 5: going to cost you more millions for more years. So
- 15:15Speaker 5: I'd be up for a trade deadline ending January tenth,
- 15:21Speaker 5: give a little bit of time after Christmas, no more
- 15:23Speaker 5: trades after January tenth. Then every team's like, okay, well,
- 15:28Speaker 5: we can't do any trades anymore.
- 15:29Speaker 4: We got to go after the guys who are left.
- 15:31Speaker 4: But when does the trade deadline en spring training starts?
- 15:34Speaker 4: That that that doesn't make any sense either, because okayns
- 15:36Speaker 4: January tenth, and then the first day of spring training,
- 15:38Speaker 4: you're allowed to trade because guys have opt outs, guys
- 15:41Speaker 4: that are out of options, guys have all so opening day, yeah,
- 15:47Speaker 4: April first, okay, so then what about the guys that
- 15:49Speaker 4: don't have options. They get traded at the end of
- 15:51Speaker 4: spring training because they they're out of options and they're like, oh,
- 15:54Speaker 4: we'll put We'll trade them to another team for an
- 15:56Speaker 4: a ball kid or something right like, that doesn't make
- 15:58Speaker 4: any Why do we want to put why do we
- 15:59Speaker 4: want to put trade deadline? Because also, hass On Kim
- 16:02Speaker 4: gets hurt. Yes, look at the list of free agent shortstops.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I can't find it.
- 16:08Speaker 4: I kf and Tim Anderson are on the MLB list. Okay,
- 16:11Speaker 4: so then they're not allowed to trade because he got hurt.
- 16:13Speaker 3: After that, it's dumb.
- 16:15Speaker 4: I'm sorry, this is we don't need deadlines. You know
- 16:19Speaker 4: what the deadline is when opening day hits most of
- 16:22Speaker 4: the time.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Right, because then you're rolling or about it.
- 16:25Speaker 4: It's usually about a week before opening day because they
- 16:27Speaker 4: want to get guys there before.
- 16:28Speaker 3: But I remember the Braves.
- 16:30Speaker 4: When I was on the Braves, we traded kick Craig
- 16:32Speaker 4: Kimberle like the day before opening day and we got
- 16:35Speaker 4: Camera Mayven and I forget who else we got from
- 16:37Speaker 4: the podres, but they traded him literally like the day
- 16:40Speaker 4: before the season started. We're breaking camp and also like
- 16:43Speaker 4: kim well got traded. Wait what didn't the season start tomorrow?
- 16:47Speaker 4: Something crazy like that, right, So I don't know how
- 16:48Speaker 4: you can't have deadlines, No, especially in the off season.
- 16:51Speaker 4: You can't have deadlines for baseball because it plays out
- 16:53Speaker 4: too much.
- 16:53Speaker 2: They want their winter meetings to be bigger. So I
- 16:56Speaker 2: was like, maybe you do a trade deadline for a month,
- 16:57Speaker 2: so I at least stop that for a little And
- 16:59Speaker 2: you say, hey, last day of winter meetings is when
- 17:01Speaker 2: you can make a trade for a little bit.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I get what you're saying. It's it's complicated.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Let's charge about Yeah, let's charge a mound and let's
- 17:09Speaker 2: talk about tire schooble first, So Evan Petzold, who covers
- 17:12Speaker 2: the Tigers on a daily basis, said Scott Boris says
- 17:15Speaker 2: he remains open to negotiating Schoobl's salary with the Tigers
- 17:18Speaker 2: before an arbitration hearing, using current comparable contracts, not outdated
- 17:24Speaker 2: benchmarks like David Price's nineteen point seventy five million in
- 17:28Speaker 2: twenty fifteen.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Quote from Boris, we are open to negotiate. It's funny, Krat.
- 17:36Speaker 2: You've probably seen this because you've got kids for this age,
- 17:40Speaker 2: but the twenty sixteen thing has been a thing over
- 17:44Speaker 2: the past week or two. No, you haven't seen this
- 17:46Speaker 2: where people are posting like, oh, here's what I was
- 17:49Speaker 2: doing in twenty sixteen.
- 17:51Speaker 5: No, seen it.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Oh wow, maybe it's maybe it's with my age group.
- 17:55Speaker 2: But everyone's like, this is the common post.
- 17:57Speaker 3: I'm doing it.
- 17:58Speaker 1: You saw it, right, it's Oliver. But I love this.
- 18:01Speaker 2: They go, well, since everyone's doing it, I have to.
- 18:05Speaker 2: That's like when the influencers go, I know, you're all
- 18:08Speaker 2: asking me about my skincare routine, and it's like, are
- 18:11Speaker 2: they or.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Do they care less about the twenty sixteen trend or
- 18:14Speaker 4: the Beckham thing that's happening.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Have you seen that that's we don't have time to
- 18:18Speaker 3: get into all that.
- 18:19Speaker 1: But wow, I mean, I don't know that I've seen that.
- 18:21Speaker 4: David Beckham and his son and his wife. It's a
- 18:24Speaker 4: whole trust me. I got the whole run down this
- 18:26Speaker 4: morning on it.
- 18:26Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 18:27Speaker 2: There is nothing more boring than a bad social media trend.
- 18:30Speaker 2: So anyway, I don't care what you're doing in twenty sixteen,
- 18:32Speaker 2: but in twenty fifteen, I do care that we're trying
- 18:36Speaker 2: to use the comp from back then. So anyway, Boris
- 18:39Speaker 2: took his little slight shot. Did you learn anything from
- 18:43Speaker 2: this quote? Do you think that there will be some
- 18:46Speaker 2: type of an agreement that goes down before we get
- 18:49Speaker 2: to the arbitration hearing? Or does the league which is
- 18:51Speaker 2: paired up with the Tigers on this one? Right, the
- 18:53Speaker 2: Labor Relations Board is working with them, so they have
- 18:56Speaker 2: a huge say. Do they feel like it's not worth
- 18:59Speaker 2: giving in and saying to Boris, all right, we're gonna
- 19:01Speaker 2: push this to twenty six, twenty seven to twenty eight
- 19:03Speaker 2: plus when the previous number is nineteen point seventy five.
- 19:08Speaker 5: It just depends on how far the Major League Baseball
- 19:12Speaker 5: wants to dig their feet in this isn't a Tigers
- 19:14Speaker 5: versus Scoobale thing. So any fans who are like, oh,
- 19:17Speaker 5: he's gonna be pissed off at the Tiger, this is
- 19:19Speaker 5: a Major League Baseball versus essentially the players Association or
- 19:24Speaker 5: the future of every really good pitcher that reaches arbitration
- 19:30Speaker 5: and has won. Cy Young's I mean, Terry scoubl Is
- 19:34Speaker 5: sitting there going, Paul Skeens, I'm just kind of trying
- 19:37Speaker 5: to help you out here. But it's a landmark arbitration case.
- 19:42Speaker 5: They're sitting there going, Okay. Scott Boris has done nothing
- 19:47Speaker 5: in his career more than growing the salaries for the
- 19:51Speaker 5: next player. He has always has it. Has it looked
- 19:55Speaker 5: Has it looked smooth to fans? No, it hasn't. Has
- 19:58Speaker 5: he done the best for his clients and his future
- 20:01Speaker 5: clients clients Enter Price still in high school right now
- 20:03Speaker 5: that he doesn't even know he has yet the next superstar.
- 20:06Speaker 5: Trek Scouble is the next superstar. So he's trying to
- 20:09Speaker 5: push that level of where the arbitration process is behind.
- 20:15Speaker 5: And if landmark players like Tarrek Scuble, like Juan Soto
- 20:20Speaker 5: a few years ago, don't push this number, then major
- 20:24Speaker 5: League Baseball wins in if we're looking at arbitration as
- 20:27Speaker 5: a case of winning and losing, and Major League Baseball
- 20:31Speaker 5: looks at it as if we don't win this, this
- 20:34Speaker 5: is gonna be I'm not gonna say catastrophic, but this
- 20:37Speaker 5: really moves the needle. Do you have to do incredible things? Yeah,
- 20:41Speaker 5: you got to win back to back Cy Young's. You
- 20:43Speaker 5: have to be the best pitcher in your respective league. Well,
- 20:48Speaker 5: they don't have to look too far over to the
- 20:50Speaker 5: National League and say.
- 20:53Speaker 3: We don't do this. What could Paul Schemes get?
- 20:55Speaker 5: So Major League Baseball is going to dig their feet in.
- 20:58Speaker 5: And I don't think there's a number that Scott Boris
- 21:03Speaker 5: says is fair that Major League Baseball also says is fair.
- 21:07Speaker 5: I think Major League Baseball knows that nineteen million is
- 21:11Speaker 5: definitely well short of where they should be, and I
- 21:14Speaker 5: think Scott Boris thinks thirty two million is a little
- 21:17Speaker 5: bit over where they should be. But I don't think
- 21:21Speaker 5: I don't think that happy medium is going to be
- 21:24Speaker 5: a happy medium. I think it truly is a landmark
- 21:26Speaker 5: case that if Boris continues down the path that he's
- 21:30Speaker 5: always been, I think they win this case. I think
- 21:33Speaker 5: they win it because of the fact that it's so
- 21:36Speaker 5: dated back to twenty fifteen, twenty sixteen of where that
- 21:42Speaker 5: quote price should be for him for Scooble.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Okay, well, there's a couple of things on this one.
- 21:51Speaker 4: The fact that we're using twenty sixteen is crazy. Okay.
- 21:54Speaker 4: Look at the way that salaries have gone up twenty fifteen. Sorry,
- 21:57Speaker 4: the way salaries have gone up. Okay, But it was
- 21:59Speaker 4: his twenty sixteen salary that they went, right, wasn't it.
- 22:02Speaker 4: I think twenty salary just over ten years ago. Yeah, okay,
- 22:06Speaker 4: so it's crazy. Also, Boris has a couple of things. One,
- 22:09Speaker 4: they can because he's in his sixth year, they can
- 22:12Speaker 4: use free agent contracts and that is a huge help
- 22:14Speaker 4: to Trek's school. Well, especially when young guys like Verlander
- 22:18Speaker 4: and Schuzer have signed like one year deals for thirty
- 22:20Speaker 4: forty million, these short term deals. Guess what that helps
- 22:24Speaker 4: the player in these negotiations. Now, MLB of course wants
- 22:27Speaker 4: to go low. I don't think that they thought that
- 22:29Speaker 4: that Boris was gonna go this big. I thought they
- 22:31Speaker 4: were like, oh, we'll go nineteen, Boris will go twenty five, right,
- 22:35Speaker 4: But he went thirty two. So now there was a
- 22:37Speaker 4: monster gap in between here the middles twenty five and
- 22:40Speaker 4: a half. So Boris is probably like, hey, you get
- 22:41Speaker 4: to twenty eight, I will think about it. But that
- 22:44Speaker 4: would be such a huge jump for the league to
- 22:48Speaker 4: go from nineteen to twenty eight, because then as soon
- 22:50Speaker 4: as if they say yes to twenty eight, then once
- 22:53Speaker 4: Skens gets to this spot or someone else down the road,
- 22:57Speaker 4: they're gonna be like, well, five years ago, Terrek School,
- 23:00Speaker 4: we got twenty eight. I have a Rookie of the Year,
- 23:02Speaker 4: maybe two or three Cy Youngs, this or that. I
- 23:05Speaker 4: should be thirty five, right, depending on how you know.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Everything goes with salaries. So that's why MLB's fighting so
- 23:11Speaker 4: hard for this now. The other thing is there's also
- 23:13Speaker 4: a third component in play here. The owners hate arbitration, okay,
- 23:18Speaker 4: because they don't want arbitrary. They've had one arbitration since
- 23:21Speaker 4: the player's got arbitration, Marvin Miller back how many ever
- 23:24Speaker 4: years ago, right, So if they can prove that Trek
- 23:27Speaker 4: School is not worth more than David Price was in
- 23:29Speaker 4: twenty fifteen, that's another chip they can put on their
- 23:32Speaker 4: negotiating table and say, look, guys, your best pitcher he
- 23:36Speaker 4: got screwed in arbitration. We don't like arbitration, maybe you
- 23:38Speaker 4: guys shouldn't like arbitration either, and they can try and
- 23:41Speaker 4: get rid of it. They could use that in the
- 23:42Speaker 4: CBA and say, one of your best players on the field,
- 23:46Speaker 4: could you know you got what a guy fifteen, you know,
- 23:48Speaker 4: almost twelve years ago less than what he got right,
- 23:52Speaker 4: And they can and then the Players Association is going
- 23:54Speaker 4: to go, well, you know, maybe we should look at
- 23:56Speaker 4: changing this. So again, there's a third thing in play.
- 23:59Speaker 4: And I know the overriding factor in all Major League
- 24:01Speaker 4: Baseball right now. It's just damn CBA. And I'm already
- 24:04Speaker 4: tired of talking about it. I got we got like
- 24:06Speaker 4: twelve more months to talk about it.
- 24:07Speaker 2: It's a factor in everything that happens right now. But
- 24:10Speaker 2: also here's another factor. The arbitration panel, unless stuff has changed,
- 24:15Speaker 2: is three humans, right, three humans, and they make their
- 24:19Speaker 2: case to each other on where they're going to vote. Right,
- 24:22Speaker 2: So even if you get one one side one the other,
- 24:24Speaker 2: there's going to be someone that splits this up. Every
- 24:27Speaker 2: once in a while there's a case where it seems
- 24:30Speaker 2: obvious that one side's going to win and the other
- 24:32Speaker 2: side wins. Why Because these people are not the most
- 24:35Speaker 2: educated on baseball and they want it to be that
- 24:37Speaker 2: way for some reason.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Right, Well, they want it because.
- 24:39Speaker 4: They're not supposed to be influenced whether they're like have
- 24:41Speaker 4: a team or whether they have something going on, right,
- 24:44Speaker 4: so they never they don't want that. And again, is
- 24:47Speaker 4: someone that's been through this problem. I've been in this process.
- 24:49Speaker 4: I've been in this room. I've been through this whole thing.
- 24:51Speaker 4: They don't tell you why you won. They don't tell
- 24:54Speaker 4: you why you won. They don't tell you what the
- 24:56Speaker 4: number was they came to a conclusion on. They just
- 24:58Speaker 4: give you a U win or you w. And there's
- 25:01Speaker 4: no explanation. This isn't like a law case right where
- 25:04Speaker 4: the law after the lawyer, the judge makes a decision,
- 25:07Speaker 4: then they write like a thing explaining why they made
- 25:10Speaker 4: this decision or why they're doing this, or like the
- 25:12Speaker 4: Supreme Court will we voted this way because of this
- 25:14Speaker 4: case back one hundred years ago, whatever it was. They
- 25:17Speaker 4: just say, hey, Scooba one the tigers. There is no explanation.
- 25:21Speaker 4: It's a you get one phone call from your age,
- 25:23Speaker 4: they call the union, They call the owners, and the
- 25:26Speaker 4: union calls you or your agent. They say you won,
- 25:28Speaker 4: you lost, and there's that's it. It's over and that's
- 25:31Speaker 4: what you get. But there's no explanation, there's nothing.
- 25:33Speaker 2: The problem with that is these people want to keep
- 25:36Speaker 2: their jobs, and this is the biggest case of all time.
- 25:39Speaker 2: So I do think they're going to be weighing which
- 25:41Speaker 2: side holds more influence in them keeping their jobs. They're
- 25:45Speaker 2: human beings, that's a part of it.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 25:47Speaker 2: They get compensated nicely to be able to handle this,
- 25:50Speaker 2: So they get a nice.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Vacation for two weeks in Arizona or Florida, depending on
- 25:53Speaker 3: this year, it's in Arizona, so they get a nice
- 25:56Speaker 3: little vacation.
- 25:57Speaker 1: There are factors at play.
- 25:58Speaker 2: It's like, you know one of those movies where both
- 26:01Speaker 2: sides are trying to pick the jury and it gets
- 26:03Speaker 2: all crazy.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Remember that one movie.
- 26:04Speaker 2: It was like you who is it, Gene Hackman, I
- 26:06Speaker 2: don't know, you know what I'm talking about. It's like
- 26:08Speaker 2: that where they're like figuring out is this person going
- 26:11Speaker 2: to be for us or against us? And obviously these
- 26:13Speaker 2: people have their jobs on the line if they get
- 26:15Speaker 2: fired for it, right, I mean, I'm saying if they
- 26:18Speaker 2: picked the wrong side, and then the other side's going
- 26:20Speaker 2: to try and fire them. All right, let's talk Hall
- 26:32Speaker 2: of Fame. Today's the day. The announcement is going to
- 26:36Speaker 2: come around six. I think that's when the show starts.
- 26:38Speaker 2: You'll probably get the announcement at like six forty five
- 26:40Speaker 2: or something. That's TV for you. They keep you there,
- 26:43Speaker 2: they give you the commercials. But anyway, eventually we'll find out.
- 26:46Speaker 4: You go through all one hundred candidates on the list
- 26:48Speaker 4: and explain why each one should be in the Hall
- 26:49Speaker 4: of Fame.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Yep, they do the whole song and dance, or you
- 26:52Speaker 2: can just check Twitter later on. But anyway, yeah, it'll
- 26:56Speaker 2: probably be close to seven people. No, it's a good show.
- 26:59Speaker 2: It's worth while and you get to hear from some
- 27:01Speaker 2: of the guys. But anyway, many people are going to
- 27:03Speaker 2: be watching this our show and listening to our show,
- 27:06Speaker 2: and we already have an answer. So what do you
- 27:08Speaker 2: think of Beltron probably getting in and Andrew Jones.
- 27:12Speaker 3: And Andrews last year. No, so he's got one more right.
- 27:16Speaker 1: But what I've been doing.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Is that if he doesn't get in this year, he's
- 27:19Speaker 2: a lock next year, which is I think.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Just because and this is not knocking to any of
- 27:27Speaker 4: the guys on the ballot, because you can say, oh,
- 27:29Speaker 4: you know, you didn't get any of that.
- 27:30Speaker 3: I was on a ballot. I got two votes.
- 27:31Speaker 5: Okay.
- 27:32Speaker 4: So before there's just not a surefire first ballot Hall
- 27:35Speaker 4: of Famer of the new guys that were added this year.
- 27:38Speaker 4: So that's how when they say, oh, guys give big
- 27:40Speaker 4: bumps and jumps and all this, it's because there's certain
- 27:43Speaker 4: people that are taking off the ballot bonds Clemens. Those
- 27:46Speaker 4: guys are now gone, and then the new group comes
- 27:49Speaker 4: in and there is not a lot of sure fire
- 27:51Speaker 4: Hall of Famer. I don't know if there's a there's
- 27:53Speaker 4: definitely not a first ballot Hall of Famer on this
- 27:55Speaker 4: new list. But I don't know there's a sure fire
- 27:57Speaker 4: Hall of Famer on this new ballot of list of guys.
- 28:01Speaker 4: So you'll see a bump for oddly Rawlins, Felix, Andrew Jones,
- 28:05Speaker 4: these guys, right, hopefully Burley Tory Hunter will get some bumps. Right,
- 28:10Speaker 4: it looked like Andrew Jones was a lock, but then
- 28:12Speaker 4: they always say, well, if he's at seventy percent or whatever,
- 28:15Speaker 4: eighty percent, then that falls because the people who don't
- 28:17Speaker 4: release their ballots it's not always, not always the number
- 28:21Speaker 4: that usually come in lower than what the people that
- 28:23Speaker 4: release them. So I'm pretty sure Beltron's going to get
- 28:26Speaker 4: in well deserved, and I'm pretty sure that Andrew Jones
- 28:29Speaker 4: is going to get in US, if not this year
- 28:31Speaker 4: then next year.
- 28:31Speaker 3: So well deserved.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Man, I mean, it's it's awesome, what an amazing achievement,
- 28:36Speaker 4: especially for those guys. And listen, if Andrew Jones gets
- 28:38Speaker 4: in from you know, Cirasol and down there, that's a
- 28:41Speaker 4: big thing for that island down there.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Oh.
- 28:44Speaker 2: I've been on the Andrew Jones train for a while
- 28:47Speaker 2: now because I think he's getting punished for the late
- 28:50Speaker 2: stages of his career. But I think he had enough
- 28:52Speaker 2: of a prime window, especially now with the way that
- 28:55Speaker 2: boating's going down, and I'm fine with it. We just
- 28:57Speaker 2: had this conversation on a different segment. The voting process
- 29:01Speaker 2: has to change because you're not going to hit some
- 29:03Speaker 2: of those milestone numbers and Andrew Jones actually put up,
- 29:06Speaker 2: like some of the counting stats are looking for, say
- 29:08Speaker 2: home runs.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Ye, he's the.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Best defensive center fielder, if not top three, of a
- 29:15Speaker 2: long period of time right of an era. One of
- 29:17Speaker 2: the best all time, the whole deal, like you had that,
- 29:20Speaker 2: and he wasn't a nothing on offense. He was a
- 29:23Speaker 2: very impactful offensive player for a good chunk of time,
- 29:26Speaker 2: and then he went through something that's natural, it's called
- 29:29Speaker 2: the aging process, but he still played for a bit
- 29:32Speaker 2: and that hurt his rate stats. So I think that
- 29:35Speaker 2: the crowd has been off on him for a while now,
- 29:37Speaker 2: and it appears as if it'll finally fix itself, either
- 29:41Speaker 2: this year or next year. I was also surprised to
- 29:43Speaker 2: see Beltron, I forgot, has already been on the ballot
- 29:46Speaker 2: for several years. I think this is his fourth run
- 29:48Speaker 2: at this point. But anyway, overall thoughts from your crats.
- 29:53Speaker 5: I mean, I think Beltron's the best switch hitter that
- 29:57Speaker 5: I ever saw alive. I mean, I saw Chip Jones
- 30:00Speaker 5: at the end of his career. I saw Beltro Beltron
- 30:03Speaker 5: a little bit closer to you know, a little bit
- 30:07Speaker 5: more closer to his prime because I think they played
- 30:10Speaker 5: like three or four more years after after Chipper Jones.
- 30:14Speaker 5: But those two guys, and I think, you know, I
- 30:16Speaker 5: think it's a he was probably one of the more
- 30:18Speaker 5: underrated players because he was in k C and nobody
- 30:22Speaker 5: really knew about him until he burst on the scene
- 30:24Speaker 5: in Houston. I think Andrew Jones, like obviously it's Hall
- 30:28Speaker 5: of Fame voting time and everything. Some of the stats
- 30:31Speaker 5: that are coming out there about his about his defense,
- 30:35Speaker 5: and like different guys that you would respect what they
- 30:38Speaker 5: said about the fact that I think Bobby Cox was
- 30:40Speaker 5: the one that said he's the second best altfaer he's
- 30:43Speaker 5: ever seen, behind Willie Mays. I just think it's I
- 30:49Speaker 5: think it's something. I hope both of them get in
- 30:51Speaker 5: and the whole like waiting the whole wait another year.
- 30:56Speaker 5: I think that would suck for Andrew, So I hope
- 30:59Speaker 5: he gets in this year. I hope he gets in
- 31:01Speaker 5: the skin of his teeth.
- 31:03Speaker 4: By the way, if Andrew does get in, which I
- 31:05Speaker 4: hope he does, again, I fought this fight Tory Hunter
- 31:08Speaker 4: and Jim Edmonds, he's not even on the ballot need
- 31:11Speaker 4: to be looked down more closely. I mean, Jim only
- 31:12Speaker 4: had eight gold gloves, but he's got you know, ops
- 31:16Speaker 4: plus a one to thirty two.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Andrew Jones ops plus is one eleven. I mean that's better, though.
- 31:22Speaker 3: That's what do you think is hurting? Okay, what do
- 31:24Speaker 3: you think is Torris.
- 31:25Speaker 4: Okay, but Tory Hunter. I'm gonna just this is just
- 31:27Speaker 4: Tory Hunter. We get Jim Vans, and obviously I have
- 31:29Speaker 4: a special place in my heart for Tory. We've played
- 31:31Speaker 4: together from the minor leagues all the way up. Gold
- 31:33Speaker 4: Gloves nine Andrew Jones ten. So nine years in a row,
- 31:37Speaker 4: Tory Hunter won the AO Gold Glove. Andrew Jones did
- 31:39Speaker 4: it ten years in a row. Tory Hunter two Silver Sluggers.
- 31:42Speaker 4: Andrew Jones won either won a World Series, five All
- 31:45Speaker 4: Star Games. Andrew Jones in two thousand and five did
- 31:48Speaker 4: win RBI total and a home run title. Okay, fine,
- 31:51Speaker 4: more games for Tory bet thirty three point higher batting
- 31:55Speaker 4: average for Tory. Now he's eighty home runs behind, so
- 31:58Speaker 4: that's fine. But more RBI's five hundred more hits, almost
- 32:03Speaker 4: one hundred more runs, almost over one hundred more doubles,
- 32:07Speaker 4: more triples, less strikeouts.
- 32:12Speaker 3: I got plugging for Center's.
- 32:13Speaker 4: Almost closed on base, almost close ops plus one eleven
- 32:18Speaker 4: to one, ten war sixty two point eight to fifty.
- 32:22Speaker 1: That's the big one.
- 32:23Speaker 4: That Okay, but if you look at the stats, play
- 32:25Speaker 4: should but explain to me how Andrew Jones has sixty
- 32:28Speaker 4: two point eight war and Tory Hunter has fifty war?
- 32:31Speaker 4: So was there twelve point eight war in that one?
- 32:33Speaker 4: Gold extra gold gloved Andrew one. That's what I don't understand,
- 32:37Speaker 4: because if you if I line their numbers up next
- 32:39Speaker 4: to each other, other than the home runs, okay, Tory
- 32:42Speaker 4: has them in almost every other category. So why is
- 32:46Speaker 4: Andrew like, oh that Andrew Jones asking I watched Tory
- 32:49Speaker 4: Hunter for a long time. He was the best center
- 32:51Speaker 4: fielder I ever saw on a daily basis, Jones, I
- 32:53Speaker 4: didn't see Andrew Jones on a daily base I saw
- 32:55Speaker 4: Tory Hunter play every day in centerfield.
- 32:57Speaker 3: I was catching.
- 32:58Speaker 4: I'm watching him play centerfield for year after year. This
- 33:01Speaker 4: dude was making catches and I never saw anybody come
- 33:03Speaker 4: close to.
- 33:04Speaker 5: Making Why do you think he's being held back. I
- 33:07Speaker 5: don't think that's being held back because he's They're both
- 33:10Speaker 5: great dudes. They're very I don't know, they're very affeable.
- 33:13Speaker 5: They've always been that guy. There's no controversy around him.
- 33:17Speaker 5: To me, there has to be a reason. I don't
- 33:22Speaker 5: think somebody just looks up and goes Tory Hunter. Yeah,
- 33:25Speaker 5: I thought he was a good player, But what was
- 33:27Speaker 5: his war? No sorry, never mind, Like you're talking about
- 33:30Speaker 5: a dude that has over three hundred home runs and
- 33:33Speaker 5: has nine gold gloves. Like to me, that takes that
- 33:37Speaker 5: takes effort then to go, okay, I have to I
- 33:40Speaker 5: have to rethink this.
- 33:43Speaker 2: I think some guys are getting punished for playing for
- 33:46Speaker 2: a long period of time from rat stats, so like
- 33:50Speaker 2: you can't figure out it's like, okay, so you played
- 33:52Speaker 2: too long or you didn't play long enough.
- 33:54Speaker 1: I agree with you. I just I think they both
- 33:55Speaker 1: should be in.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Jason Stark, who we have on the show often and
- 33:58Speaker 2: is looked at as one of the games history, and
- 34:00Speaker 2: voted for Tory Hunter this year.
- 34:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know anyways, that's just my that's my soapbox.
- 34:05Speaker 4: I'm on this year because I love Andrew. I played
- 34:08Speaker 4: with Andrew, I played with Tory. I think I think
- 34:13Speaker 4: it's kind of like if this guy gets in and
- 34:15Speaker 4: this guy has for me, It's like Andy Pettitt and
- 34:17Speaker 4: Mark Burley. If Andy Pettit gets in, the Mark Burley
- 34:19Speaker 4: has to be in right behind him because if you
- 34:21Speaker 4: look at their numbers and.
- 34:23Speaker 3: What now Pettitt.
- 34:24Speaker 4: The one thing Pettitt had, though, was he had the
- 34:26Speaker 4: postseason because he was on the Yankee so he got
- 34:28Speaker 4: the postseason, so everybody knew him a little bit more.
- 34:30Speaker 3: Right, That's kind of what happened with Andrew Jones.
- 34:32Speaker 4: And everyone goes, well, look at Andrew Jones, is like
- 34:34Speaker 4: those ten years when he was winning gold gloves. Okay, Well,
- 34:37Speaker 4: Tory Hunter had nine really unbelievable years too, and he
- 34:39Speaker 4: won those gold gloves, right, so he play longer. And
- 34:43Speaker 4: then we go like, we'll use Joe Maller an example.
- 34:45Speaker 4: Everyone's like, well, the six years Joe Maher caught, he
- 34:47Speaker 4: was so great, first ballot Hall of Famer, right, Well,
- 34:50Speaker 4: I mean if you pick anybody's six best years, if
- 34:53Speaker 4: they play long enough, you can make argument that a
- 34:56Speaker 4: lot of guys are Hall of Famers.
- 34:57Speaker 3: So I don't know it. It's this is why the
- 34:59Speaker 3: Hall of Fame is still polarizing.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's really tough to find center fielders that did
- 35:03Speaker 2: it all right.
- 35:04Speaker 1: We still have problems with that.
- 35:05Speaker 4: I mean Jim Edmonds still look at Jim NaN's numbers
- 35:07Speaker 4: and he won eight Gold Gloves, right, I mean he
- 35:10Speaker 4: wants he won championship. I mean there's there's you know,
- 35:12Speaker 4: Kenny Lofton is another one that's an interesting case. And
- 35:14Speaker 4: if as the numbers in the in the perspective changes,
- 35:17Speaker 4: it just opens it up to more arguments.
- 35:19Speaker 5: Do you feel like it's because Do you feel like
- 35:21Speaker 5: it's because Tory started his career a little bit later?
- 35:26Speaker 5: I mean by the time Tory was an everyday guy
- 35:29Speaker 5: cares then? I mean Andrew Jones was already in his
- 35:34Speaker 5: what fifth season?
- 35:36Speaker 3: Do you think it? Who cares when you start? Yeah,
- 35:40Speaker 3: I'm just saying.
- 35:41Speaker 4: Listen, Tory was a slower developer. He was gonna quit
- 35:43Speaker 4: and go play football. I mean, listen, I was there
- 35:45Speaker 4: for all that stuff. But toy, we've had him on
- 35:47Speaker 4: many times. He's one of the best dudes in the world.
- 35:49Speaker 4: And so for people to say, well, you can't do
- 35:51Speaker 4: you want to what do you want to?
- 35:52Speaker 3: Check?
- 35:52Speaker 4: His personality? He was awesome, right, He played all the time.
- 35:56Speaker 4: He never won, but he was on winners. Andrew Jones
- 35:58Speaker 4: never won a World Series to him, but he never
- 36:00Speaker 4: won him. He didn't win the one on the ninety
- 36:02Speaker 4: five team. Really, Oh, he was later than that.
- 36:04Speaker 3: He was he came up in ninety six, so he
- 36:06Speaker 3: never won and he went on the ninety five team, right.
- 36:09Speaker 4: I mean, there's a song ninety eight Braves, you know,
- 36:12Speaker 4: got out done by that Padre magic Morgan Wallen, Right, yep,
- 36:15Speaker 4: he was on that dam the Jones Boys. But I
- 36:18Speaker 4: don't know, it's just I don't know. We could argue
- 36:22Speaker 4: about this until we're blue in the face.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Yeah, they're both great. I'm just going through stats and
- 36:30Speaker 2: all that they both have my vote. That's all we
- 36:33Speaker 2: have time for now. But we can do any aftermath. Yeah,
- 36:37Speaker 2: we're gonna slap in a sec. We can do any
- 36:38Speaker 2: aftermath on what we end up seeing with who gets in.
- 36:42Speaker 2: But also I want us to do it today. Maybe
- 36:44Speaker 2: we'll do tomorrow in case there are any other stray
- 36:48Speaker 2: single vote getters.
- 36:50Speaker 1: I want to talk about that.
- 36:52Speaker 2: It's just a that's a fun show topic for a
- 36:54Speaker 2: few minutes. But anyway, let's lap. We're looking at case
- 37:10Speaker 2: case studies.
- 37:11Speaker 4: With Yeah, I'm looking at another team, Burley versus pettit
- 37:15Speaker 4: and I'm showing like it's tight. It's there's so much
- 37:18Speaker 4: you can put this and that It's like, Okay, so
- 37:21Speaker 4: Petti gets in because he had more postseason, but that's
- 37:23Speaker 4: not Burley's fault that we weren't as good as the
- 37:25Speaker 4: Yankees were for all, you know, So That's why I
- 37:28Speaker 4: have a hard time when listen when Burley pitched in
- 37:30Speaker 4: the postseason, he pitched well. He closed the game out
- 37:33Speaker 4: drunk one time. So anyways, whatever I see drunk stats
- 37:37Speaker 4: for each player. Yeah, I bet, I bet a birth
- 37:39Speaker 4: won wins. I can name you some other guys that
- 37:42Speaker 4: did some stuff too.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Yeah, that would be a fun segment.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Anyone want that last thing today besides Kratz hat, Let's
- 37:48Speaker 2: do that and then I'll load this up.
- 37:51Speaker 5: I really found my Minnesota Twins hat, and I'm not
- 37:53Speaker 5: sure they found the off season yet. So I feel
- 37:56Speaker 5: like if somebody needs a really good defensive outfielder that
- 37:59Speaker 5: also for power, Twins could make a huge splash by
- 38:06Speaker 5: trading someone who doesn't want to be traded in Byron Buxton.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Except you will at the trade deadline when they're terrible.
- 38:13Speaker 2: They signed Victor Caratini, which is nice. I didn't even
- 38:16Speaker 2: know that was the fit they needed. Because they have
- 38:17Speaker 2: Brian Jeffers, maybe they're going to trade him. I can't eat.
- 38:19Speaker 2: I don't want to get mad. It's only Tuesday Rangers Fest,
- 38:26Speaker 2: so they're not doing signings at the winter warm up appearances.
- 38:32Speaker 2: I think they're going to do signings at the fan fest.
- 38:36Speaker 2: But they're doing like their little stop by situation. It's
- 38:39Speaker 2: a long tweet. So they're saying that the autograph memorabilia
- 38:44Speaker 2: seekers that hagub all the time and they bring a
- 38:46Speaker 2: billion things are causing lines to get longer and other
- 38:50Speaker 2: fans to miss out on stuff. So there's back and
- 38:53Speaker 2: forth discussion on what that is. Can you also just
- 38:56Speaker 2: limit someone or if someone goes up there and be like, hey, dude,
- 38:58Speaker 2: you get one signature?
- 38:59Speaker 4: Yeah, you're supposed to do that, but then the problem
- 39:01Speaker 4: with that is Kratz knows, is if someone comes up
- 39:04Speaker 4: to you with five and then you're like, okay, I'm
- 39:06Speaker 4: only supposed to sign one. Then the guy's like, oh
- 39:08Speaker 4: but I waited in line for an hour, and then
- 39:10Speaker 4: there's the security guard there that you know, and then
- 39:12Speaker 4: it makes you feel bad.
- 39:13Speaker 3: So you just are like, I just sign them real
- 39:14Speaker 3: quick and get them the heck out of here.
- 39:15Speaker 1: What about one signature per person?
- 39:19Speaker 3: And you look yes, and then they say, but I
- 39:21Speaker 3: have two kids.
- 39:22Speaker 1: But they're saying I have two kids, no signatures, two kids?
- 39:25Speaker 1: They can share it, okay, teach them sharing.
- 39:29Speaker 5: I'm not again, I'm not about taking away from the fans,
- 39:33Speaker 5: like I love the fan experience the autograph. These events
- 39:37Speaker 5: get crushed by the autograph seekers. One autograph, these guys
- 39:42Speaker 5: will do it, will well, they'll do it. They'll put
- 39:46Speaker 5: on another jacket, they bring changes of clothes to get
- 39:49Speaker 5: back through the same line again. So it's it really
- 39:53Speaker 5: has gotten watered down for the people that the autographs
- 39:56Speaker 5: would matter. And I promise you, coming from a player,
- 40:00Speaker 5: we want to sign the autographs for the kids, for
- 40:03Speaker 5: the people who they're like, oh my gosh, I don't
- 40:06Speaker 5: even know who you are, our crats, but thank you
- 40:08Speaker 5: for signing it. Like that means a lot to the players,
- 40:14Speaker 5: not the dude that comes with the binder and is.
- 40:16Speaker 3: Like I've just got six, can you just do six?
- 40:19Speaker 5: And that's for me. Like the guys who are really
- 40:22Speaker 5: who are actually good players, they get crushed by stuff, crushed.
- 40:27Speaker 2: And then they pay the kids to get the rest
- 40:30Speaker 2: of them. I mean, that's a real thing I've heard. Yeah,
- 40:34Speaker 2: well I'll say this.
- 40:35Speaker 4: We had a thing, we had our twentieth anniversary with
- 40:37Speaker 4: the White Sox issue, right and they came and said, hey,
- 40:41Speaker 4: we want to do autograph stations for all the players,
- 40:44Speaker 4: and I said, well, do we get paid, because normally
- 40:46Speaker 4: when I do sign autographs, I get paid. And they're like, no,
- 40:49Speaker 4: this is just for the fans. I'm like, well, the
- 40:51Speaker 4: fans have to pay to stay in line and they
- 40:53Speaker 4: were like yeah. And I'm like, I'm not signing.
- 40:55Speaker 1: That doesn't make any sense.
- 40:56Speaker 4: And they said why not? And I said, well, where's
- 40:58Speaker 4: the money going. They're like, well, really, give me an answer.
- 41:00Speaker 4: And I was like, well, if the players aren't getting paid,
- 41:03Speaker 4: how about we I go, how about this, We'll just
- 41:04Speaker 4: do pictures.
- 41:05Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll do pictures like this.
- 41:08Speaker 4: And you know what, it's actually kind of cool because
- 41:10Speaker 4: everyone comes up, they're happy to see you, and they're like.
- 41:13Speaker 3: Hey, smile, they have a story for you. Right. Justin
- 41:16Speaker 3: Blasco is in the chat all the time.
- 41:18Speaker 4: He came up and man, I think it was Paul,
- 41:20Speaker 4: me and Jermaine and we were signing, and people could
- 41:23Speaker 4: go from one stage to the other and get their
- 41:24Speaker 4: picture with whoever their favorite players, and you had time
- 41:27Speaker 4: to make too write. It was cool because you actually
- 41:29Speaker 4: get to talk to the people and shake their hand
- 41:31Speaker 4: and meet them, as opposed to you're just looking down.
- 41:33Speaker 1: You're like, right, I'm a picture over autographing because it's
- 41:39Speaker 1: more of.
- 41:39Speaker 4: A personal experience than just the autograph line. I'm sorry
- 41:44Speaker 4: it is. And even for the players it's cool because
- 41:47Speaker 4: then the guy, the man or woman who ever comes
- 41:49Speaker 4: up to he says.
- 41:50Speaker 3: Hey man, this is my favorite you're my favorite player.
- 41:53Speaker 4: This is the memory I have or this is what
- 41:55Speaker 4: I and you're like, this is ridiculous, this is awesome.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 42:00Speaker 3: It's like excepting when you.
- 42:00Speaker 4: Get done, you're you're like, oh, I need hand sanitiz
- 42:03Speaker 4: or I gotta wash my hands like five times, because
- 42:04Speaker 4: you know, shaking everyone's hand and my hands get dirty.
- 42:08Speaker 3: Their hands are dirty, gets tiring.
- 42:11Speaker 2: But that's just so many no, I said, I'm saying it.
- 42:15Speaker 2: That's not fun physically either.
- 42:17Speaker 1: So this was fun. Thanks everyone.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Oh tomorrow, JJ Cooper, big day for Baseball America.
- 42:25Speaker 1: We'll talk about it tomorrow.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Cedric Mullins need Tampa Bay Ray outfielder and Derek Johnson
- 42:32Speaker 2: to talk pitching as well as anybody in the game.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Good guest list tomorrow. We'll see you then. And remember Saturday,
- 42:38Speaker 2: we have a show. Baseball Writers Association of America Awards
- 42:42Speaker 2: will be streaming live
