- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 7th of August. So glad you have tapped on play.
- 0:21Or maybe you even asked your personal assistant to just start
- 0:24playing your favourite. Listen to me getting a little
- 0:27presumptuous about favourite podcast being this one play this
- 0:31podcast. I don't know.
- 0:31That's how I played in my my car drive to work each morning.
- 0:34I asked very politely and my Irish Siri starts playing it for
- 0:39me. So clever.
- 0:41But wherever you are, no matter how you are playing this great
- 0:44to have your company as we continue to have this expose of
- 0:49all that was going wrong in the church in Corinth.
- 0:52And today we're going to hear about this chap named Apollos.
- 0:55No, this has got nothing to do with the Apollo 13 mission.
- 0:59You know, all those years ago, seated from there, Apollo was
- 1:04the Greek and Roman God of well, he was the God of a lot.
- 1:08He was the God of the sun, the God of archery, prophecy, poetry
- 1:13and music. And this God was, well, a
- 1:17central figure in life back then.
- 1:18And so people who believed in those religions named their
- 1:22children after them. Just if if you have got children
- 1:25or you have been named after some biblical character, same
- 1:28deal. Except they lived in a world
- 1:30where a very different religion was the dominant religion of the
- 1:33day. And in fact, the reason they
- 1:36called it the Apollo series of missions in space was because
- 1:40one of the NASA administrators was at home reading a
- 1:44mythological book and came across this image of Apollo
- 1:47riding his chariot across the sun and thought, cool, that's
- 1:51what we're going to do. So we named them the Apollo
- 1:54missions. But here we have a worldview
- 1:59which in some ways we still haven't moved all that far from
- 2:02where our world is, certainly not a world that lives in line
- 2:06with God's rulership of it. So we are going to hear about
- 2:10this chap who is part of that world but has converted and is
- 2:14indeed now becoming a force for good in God's Kingdom.
- 2:18So let us read together, friends.
- 2:21First Corinthians, chapter 2. Dear brothers and sisters, when
- 2:35I was with you, I couldn't talk to you as I would to spiritual
- 2:39people. I had to talk as though you
- 2:41belonged to this world or as though you were infants in
- 2:45Christ. I had to feed you with milk, not
- 2:49with solid food, because you weren't ready for anything
- 2:52stronger. And you still aren't ready, for
- 2:55you were still controlled by your sinful nature.
- 2:58You were jealous of one another and quarrel with each other.
- 3:02Doesn't that prove that you were controlled by your sinful
- 3:05nature? Aren't you living like people of
- 3:08the world? When one of you says I'm a
- 3:11follower of Paul and another says I follow Apollos, aren't
- 3:17you just acting like people of the world?
- 3:20After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul?
- 3:25We are only God's servants through whom you believed the
- 3:29good news. Each of us did the work the Lord
- 3:32gave us. I planted the seed in your
- 3:34hearts, and Apollos watered it. But it was God who made it grow.
- 3:40It's not important who does the planting or who does the
- 3:42watering. What's important is that God
- 3:46makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one
- 3:49who waters work together with the same purpose, and both will
- 3:54be rewarded for their own hard work.
- 3:57For we are both God's workers, and you are God's field.
- 4:02You are God's building. Because of God's grace to me,
- 4:07I've laid the foundation like an expert builder.
- 4:11Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this
- 4:15foundation must be very careful, for no one can lay any
- 4:20foundation other than the one we already have, Jesus Christ.
- 4:28Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of
- 4:31materials, gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay or straw.
- 4:37But on the Judgement Day, fire will reveal what kind of work
- 4:41each builder has done. The fire will show if a person's
- 4:45work has any value. If the work survives, that
- 4:49builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up,
- 4:54the builder will suffer great loss.
- 4:57The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping
- 5:01through a wall of flames, don't you realise that all of you
- 5:06together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives
- 5:11in you? God will destroy anyone who
- 5:14destroys this temple, for God's temple is holy, and you are that
- 5:20temple. Stop deceiving yourselves.
- 5:23If you think you are wise by this world's standards, you need
- 5:27to become a fool to be truly wise.
- 5:30For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God, as the
- 5:35Scriptures say. He traps the wise in the snare
- 5:39of their own cleverness. And again, the Lord knows the
- 5:44thoughts of the wise. He knows they are worthless.
- 5:48So don't boast about following a particular human leader.
- 5:52For everything belongs to you, whether Paul or Apollos or Peter
- 5:57or the world or life and death or the present and the future.
- 6:02Everything belongs to you and you belong to Christ and Christ
- 6:09belongs to God. Oh Jesus, it is not comfortable
- 6:23when we feel so foolish when we stand up for you or when we live
- 6:29according to your ways and it rubs up against our culture.
- 6:34We can be left flushed cheeked, embarrassed, heart beating fast
- 6:39thinking why am I in this situation where I feel so
- 6:44stupid? Jesus, continue to embolden us,
- 6:50continue to encourage us that looking foolish in the eyes of
- 6:53this world is not a bad thing, but staying true to you and your
- 6:58wisdom and your holy ways, that is what you want for us.
- 7:07So purify our heart through that fire that Paul wrote about, so
- 7:12that all that's left in US is what is eternal and lasting and
- 7:18of you. So that when the tribulations
- 7:22and trials that this world throws at us hit us, that we
- 7:27would stand firm for you, no matter how foolish it might look
- 7:31in the broken eyes of this fallen world.
- 7:35Because we love you and we choose you and to live our lives
- 7:40for you. Jesus.
- 7:41So embolden us to do that. We pray all of this in your
- 7:46wonderful, saving, loving and forgiving name, Jesus, Amen.
