- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:09through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:19We made it to the end of the week and we are still about 1000
- 0:24subscribers off from 5000 subscribers.
- 0:27So please subscribe on YouTube. I'm going to count the end of
- 0:31the week as Sunday because that's the end of the technical
- 0:34week. And I feel like with our Part 2
- 0:36of the Tana Mojo deep dive tomorrow, that will hopefully
- 0:39gain some traction and we will hit my goal of 5000 subscribers
- 0:43by the end of the week. All right, I have two stories
- 0:47for you guys today and the first one is just a bit unhinged.
- 0:52So there is a rumoured Skippity Toilet movie and TV series in
- 0:58adaptation. So according to Variety,
- 1:01Skippity Toilet is in talks of being adapted into a film and TV
- 1:05franchise. Director Michael Bay, who
- 1:07actually directed the Transformers movies, and the
- 1:10president of Paramount, Adam Goodman sat for an interview
- 1:13with Variety's podcast Strictly Business.
- 1:16And they discussed this. They said we are absolutely in
- 1:19talks right now both on the television side and the earliest
- 1:22conversations right now on the film side, Goodman said.
- 1:25But it's not a be all end all for us.
- 1:28So when this came out, Taylor Lorenz, the Internet culture
- 1:31journalist of our generation, obviously had to cover this.
- 1:35So for The Washington Post, she wrote about how she thinks that
- 1:39if this adaptation is successful, it will provide a
- 1:42new business model for Hollywood, who is notoriously
- 1:45struggling or has been struggling to compete with
- 1:48social media platforms for attention.
- 1:50And she spoke with Adam for The Washington Post, and he said,
- 1:53quote, I think YouTube is one of the greatest breeding grounds of
- 1:55new IP. It's a business as significant
- 1:58financially as everything we've seen in the traditional
- 2:00entertainment business. It's just a little different.
- 2:03There's so much opportunity for people in Hollywood to jump into
- 2:06this space. I couldn't agree more.
- 2:09I think there is a big difference for sure between, you
- 2:12know, contracting someone like Mr. Beast, because I think he
- 2:15just got a deal with Netflix. No.
- 2:17Was a Netflix or Amazon one of those to create content for
- 2:22them, like TV for them? And I think there's a big
- 2:25difference between being a really good online creator and
- 2:29understanding what's going to hit online and in shorter form
- 2:32content like YouTube videos versus creating ATV series or
- 2:36like a movie cinematic universe. However, I think taking the IP
- 2:41like a Skippity toilet is the perfect kind of launchpad for
- 2:46that. And we've seen that with toys,
- 2:47obviously, right? Like Barbie, Michael Bay, he did
- 2:51Transformers, which was a toy. So they have experience doing
- 2:54that. I mean, I think that Skippity
- 2:56toilet is it like I think that this is going to be the biggest
- 3:00fucking thing. Like we're on the precipice of
- 3:02like the biggest thing this is going to be.
- 3:05I'm trying to think of like what I could compare it to.
- 3:07Like is this going to be like the new Marvel?
- 3:10I feel like it could be or like Star Wars, Star Wars.
- 3:14That's what it gives me. I'm going to call it.
- 3:17And if you guys haven't listened, you have to listen to
- 3:19my episode from a couple weeks back with Skippity toilet Expert
- 3:22Know Your Meme editor, Aiden Walker.
- 3:24I'm going to keep plugging it because it was such a good
- 3:27episode. Like I can't even tell you, OK,
- 3:31that was just a little tidbit, like just an unhinged fun little
- 3:34story for you guys to keep you in the know.
- 3:36The next story that I have. So I need need to talk about the
- 3:41new profile that just came out in The Times on Ballerina farm.
- 3:45So this article kind of exposes the reality behind Tik Tok's
- 3:49most famous trad wife, Ballerina Farm, AKA Hannah Neilman.
- 3:53The article is titled Meet the Queen of the Trad Wives and her
- 3:56eight children. It's written by Megan Agnew for
- 3:59The Times, like I said, and it is some of the most in depth
- 4:03reporting on trad wives that we have possibly ever seen.
- 4:08So Megan Agnew spent four hours with Hannah and the entire time
- 4:13her husband Daniel was seated right there answering questions
- 4:17alongside Hannah, even though the interview obviously was not
- 4:21about him. It was not for him.
- 4:23The only time it appeared that he left her side was when, like,
- 4:28for just a brief moment, they were talking about child birth
- 4:31because Hannah has had her eight children pain relief free.
- 4:37Except she then admitted to the journalist when Daniel was in
- 4:41another room that she did have an epidural for one of her
- 4:44children. And she called it amazing.
- 4:45And the journalist specifically notes, which, like is what makes
- 4:48this article so great because the journalist was so brutally
- 4:51honest, so cutting, so savage almost in how she reported on
- 4:55this story. And she says in the article
- 4:58that, like, Hannah, like, lowered her voice kind of
- 5:00insinuating that A, Daniel would be upset if she was talking
- 5:03about how she had an epidural and liked it, and B, possibly
- 5:08insinuating, reading between the lines, that Daniel is the one
- 5:11who wants her to have pain relief free births.
- 5:15So yeah, it was, I'm going to say this article in general was
- 5:19like quite dark. It was very difficult to get
- 5:22through. And I've seen a lot of people on
- 5:24social media say that they cried at certain points because the
- 5:27journalist does such a good job of depicting how trapped Hannah
- 5:32is and controlled, it appears, feels like she is possibly by
- 5:38her situation. And a lot of that obviously has
- 5:40to do with Daniel. So for example, to give you guys
- 5:44an example of a time that he, like interrupted her.
- 5:46So this is a direct quote from the article.
- 5:49Neilman is the most known trad wife despite having never
- 5:51attached herself to the movement or even used the term.
- 5:54How does she feel about it? Quote.
- 5:56We were already together doing what we were doing.
- 5:59Daniel replies instead. And then trad wife came along.
- 6:03We can't help it. This is what we are.
- 6:05If we're trad dad tried wife, so be it.
- 6:07Neilman, however, thinks otherwise.
- 6:09Quote, I don't necessarily identify with it, she says,
- 6:12because we are traditional in the sense that it's a man and a
- 6:14woman. We have children.
- 6:15But I do feel like we're paving a lot of paths that haven't been
- 6:18paved before. So there's just all these little
- 6:20moments like this where the journalist writes, Daniel
- 6:23interrupts or Daniel replies instead or whatever to like let
- 6:26you know what it was like being there, what their dynamic is
- 6:29like where he is just constantly, at least for the
- 6:32journalist, Like maybe it's not like that day-to-day, but maybe
- 6:34he feels very protective of their brand to the public.
- 6:38And he doesn't want Hannah, I don't know, to say something
- 6:42that's going to upset him. He wants to to be presented in a
- 6:44certain way. You know, it was very obvious
- 6:47from the way the journalist wrote this piece that he was
- 6:51trying to control the narrative. And Hannah was more so just
- 6:53trying to like, you know, do her interview and tell her story.
- 6:56The journalist also, like, presses them on their answers to
- 7:00different questions. So like, in one part, Hannah
- 7:02says that their first year of marriage, they had to sacrifice
- 7:05a lot. And the journalist is like, what
- 7:08did you have to sacrifice? And right before that, we had
- 7:10learned that Daniel's father owns JetBlue Airlines.
- 7:13So he's like, you know, they're like heirs to a billion dollar
- 7:16fortune. So kind of implying that what
- 7:20would you have to sacrifice? Most young couples, you know,
- 7:22they're financially unstable. It's a very difficult time.
- 7:25You're young, you don't have a lot of money, you know, and
- 7:28that, of course, wouldn't necessarily be the case for
- 7:30them. And she says, but we did have
- 7:33this vision, this dream. And Daniel interrupts.
- 7:36We still do. What kind of sacrifices?
- 7:38I ask her, Well, I gave up dance, which was hard.
- 7:41So if anybody didn't know, sorry, I should have said this.
- 7:43Hannah was a Juilliard trained ballerina.
- 7:48Let that sink in. You give up a piece of yourself.
- 7:50And Daniel gave up his career ambitions.
- 7:53And then the journalist says, I look out at the vastness and
- 7:56don't totally agree. Daniel wanted to live in the
- 7:58Great Western Wilds, so they did.
- 8:01He wanted to farm, so they do. He likes date nights once a
- 8:04week, so they go. They have a babysitter on those
- 8:07evenings. He didn't want nannies in the
- 8:08house, so there aren't any. The only space earmarked to be
- 8:12Neilman's own, a small barn she wanted to convert into a ballet
- 8:15studio, ended up becoming the kids school room.
- 8:19So on that note, they don't have nannies.
- 8:21You know, I think that was a big conversation or a big assumption
- 8:24that we had about a lot of these trad wife creators, especially
- 8:27the really wealthy ones, is like we're seeing what they put out
- 8:30there, but there's got to be a team behind them.
- 8:32So this was really interesting because she doesn't have any
- 8:35nannies. They do have a cleaner once a
- 8:37week. And in the article they do say
- 8:39that Daniel does the laundry. The article continues.
- 8:42The children appear to look after each other quite well too.
- 8:44There are so many that they seem to have become almost a
- 8:47self-sustaining entity. Still, Daniel says Neilman
- 8:50sometimes gets so I'll from exhaustion that she can't get
- 8:54out of bed for a week. So Hannah is out here being a
- 8:59full time content creator, one of the most famous creators on
- 9:02TikTok, arguably in terms of like being relevant in the
- 9:05cultural zeitgeist right now. She has so many followers.
- 9:08They run businesses on their farm.
- 9:10So she's like working these businesses on her farm.
- 9:12She's working the farm, She is working her content creator job
- 9:15and she is raising eight children.
- 9:18And I also believe she homeschools them.
- 9:20So she is doing like 100 different jobs and you know, as
- 9:25it says in this article, Daniel didn't want nannies.
- 9:27So she is doing it all herself to the point where she's working
- 9:30herself so hard that there's days for days on end where she
- 9:33can't get out of bed. So I want to read one of the
- 9:36final paragraphs before I get into how the Internet is
- 9:38perceiving this. So it reads.
- 9:41I can't, it seems, get an answer out of Neilman without her being
- 9:44corrected, interrupted, or answered for by either her
- 9:48husband or a child. Usually I am doing battle with
- 9:51steely Hollywood publicists. Today I am up against an army of
- 9:55toddlers who all want their mom and a husband who thinks he
- 9:59knows better. I love it.
- 10:02This is journalism like this is what it needs to be.
- 10:06And I'm very aware as someone who has interviewed a lot of
- 10:08famous people, like it's almost never like this, which is
- 10:11exactly why she pointed out the journalist pointed out like I
- 10:13usually you're battling publicist for like what you can
- 10:16and cannot ask them and things like that.
- 10:19The fact that this journalist wrote this in the article is so
- 10:22powerful and should be fair. Like it's because Hannah like
- 10:25ballerina farm is not, you know, a list enough famous enough that
- 10:29there's like all these parameters.
- 10:30It's because they are excited for the Times to interview them,
- 10:34not the other way around. So if there's just a power
- 10:37dynamic going on, that doesn't exist a lot of times when you
- 10:40are a journalist interviewing like an A list celebrity for
- 10:42example. But Oh my God, like this is how
- 10:46profiles used to be all the time before social media.
- 10:49Really. You know what kind of more
- 10:50democratized fame and what celebrities need the media for?
- 10:54This is so fucking good. So I feel like that really gives
- 10:57us a sense of what is going on behind the scenes at their home.
- 11:01So everyone is going nuts for this article, obviously, because
- 11:04it really shows a side to the trad wife creator discussion
- 11:07that I think a lot of us had not considered.
- 11:10Like I said, there was kind of this assumption that these huge
- 11:12trad wife creators, the ones that had millions of followers
- 11:14that would be making possibly millions of dollars themselves
- 11:18and where full time content creators had teams behind them
- 11:21or people helping them with their childcare or their cooking
- 11:23or whatever. Hannah cooks everything from
- 11:26scratch. She doesn't have childcare.
- 11:27Like I said, she's working all these jobs.
- 11:30So this profile really exposed like a more sinister truth, at
- 11:33least for Ballerina Farm herself.
- 11:35She's doing all of this all while having Daniel kind of keep
- 11:39her like, trapped, It appears, at least from this profile, in
- 11:42this like, weird trad wife like fetish.
- 11:45And this is more realistic to what the trad wife lifestyle
- 11:48actually is. And it's really sad.
- 11:50They talk about her ballet career like she went to
- 11:52Juilliard. And that's not to say that what
- 11:54you do in your life as a young person, like at university or
- 11:59school has to translate to, you know, what you end up doing as
- 12:03an adult. But Juilliard, like, that's not
- 12:06just getting some like regular, regular degree, you know, like
- 12:09getting accepted to Juilliard for dance, Like that's the
- 12:14pinnacle. That is what every dancer in the
- 12:17world who is taking dance seriously wants to do.
- 12:20So that is extreme talent, extreme discipline, that is
- 12:24extreme ambition, extreme dreams.
- 12:27And I'm not saying that she is not living out her dream in a
- 12:31different way, but I think this article has positioned how we
- 12:36see her dream and how we see what she ended up giving up for
- 12:39this trad wife life. So creator Caro Claire Burke,
- 12:43who has done a lot of content on kind of demystifying trad wives
- 12:46online, she said the real deception with this account now
- 12:50with the Ballerina farm account now is the.
- 12:51Appearance of everything being easy, breezy, beautiful, when in
- 12:54fact it seems like Hannah Neilman is slowly working
- 12:57herself to death to do multiple jobs, take care of these
- 13:00children, perform as an influencer online without any
- 13:04additional help. So not exactly a win for anyone
- 13:07there. And I think that really sums it
- 13:09up nicely. Definitely go with the article.
- 13:11It is worth a read. It is sad like it genuinely it's
- 13:16it's sad. And if you read it with a
- 13:18critical eye and you kind of read between the lines, you will
- 13:22feel very, I think emotional while you read it.
- 13:26Anyways guys, that's it for Mini Scroll today.
- 13:28Thank you so much for listening. This was such a good week.
- 13:32I had such a good time with you guys.
- 13:34And we are growing so fast on the YouTube, like I said.
- 13:36So please subscribe, please rate review and subscribe.
- 13:41I love you guys. And there will be Part 2 of the
- 13:44Tana Mojo Deep Dive tomorrow and then I will be back on Monday
- 13:47for mini scroll. OK, bye.
