- 0:13Well, good morning, everybody, and welcome to another edition of the ABA Coffee In The Park Podcast.
- 0:19My name is Cam Milliken, and I am here with my co-host extraordinaire, Jennifer Herrick, the executive director of the Acheson Business Association.
- 0:27Good morning, Jennifer.
- 0:29Good morning, Cam, how are you today?
- 0:31I'm doing great, it's a great day today.
- 0:33I am really excited about today.
- 0:35Well, looking outside, the leaves are falling.
- 0:39For those that live in Alberta, that live in Edmonton, fall is definitely here.
- 0:44Although today is going to be a lovely 21 degrees, and I think this might be our last official nice day.
- 0:49Yes, so, you know, I'm wearing the short sleeves today because I'm figuring I may as well enjoy this last day, but it is going to be a beautiful day today.
- 0:56And by the way, we're coming to you from the Wall Coffee Roasters in the heart of beautiful downtown Acheson.
- 1:04That's right.
- 1:05So if you hear some noise in the background, people talking or those coffee machines working, that kind of stuff, it's because we are right in the Wall Coffee Roaster.
- 1:13And Cam, I want to say something.
- 1:15I know we talked about this on the podcast a little bit last week, but we have merch.
- 1:19That's right.
- 1:20I'm so excited about our merch.
- 1:21I know.
- 1:22We have our beautiful downtown Acheson t-shirts, which are amazing.
- 1:27And we've always had our Coffee In The Park coffee mugs, which are awesome.
- 1:32And we introduced our merch at our gala.
- 1:35We did.
- 1:35And it flew off the shelf.
- 1:37Literally flew off the shelf.
- 1:39And we sold a whole bunch of it.
- 1:41And so how can people get our merch?
- 1:43Well, we are currently in the process of setting up an account on the ABA website.
- 1:49So people will be able to order it online.
- 1:52Yeah.
- 1:52And it's really awesome.
- 1:53Our t-shirts, I think, are awesome.
- 1:55Who wouldn't want a beautiful downtown Acheson t-shirt?
- 1:58I know.
- 1:59And so they did a good job of them.
- 2:02And they're nice to wear around.
- 2:03They're good quality, made in Canada, produced right here in Edmonton.
- 2:07So we're really excited about it.
- 2:08And so we'll let you know when that site is up and running.
- 2:11Should be soon.
- 2:12It should be soon.
- 2:13And then you can go and buy some of our merch.
- 2:15And the way it's selling right now, we're going to have to put another order pretty quick.
- 2:19And we have a little surprise.
- 2:21Well, we have t-shirts and mugs.
- 2:23Stay tuned for something else.
- 2:25That's right.
- 2:25For our merch department coming soon.
- 2:26That's right.
- 2:27We'll give you a little hint.
- 2:28It has to do with cold weather.
- 2:31That's all we're going to say.
- 2:31That's right.
- 2:32That's right.
- 2:32That's all we're going to say.
- 2:33We're not going to say anymore.
- 2:34So anyway, we're excited about that too.
- 2:35So hey, Jennifer, tell us about some people that make this happen.
- 2:39We would like to thank our gold corporate sponsors, which include the MyShak group of companies, Genics and Parkland County.
- 2:45These individual businesses do so much for the Acheson Business Association, and we really want to thank them for all their continued support.
- 2:52Yeah.
- 2:52Thank you so much.
- 2:53They do a great job.
- 2:54And like Jennifer said, we get to do this because of you.
- 2:57And you know, our numbers just keep growing.
- 3:00I really actually can't believe it.
- 3:01I know.
- 3:01It's kind of incredible, isn't it?
- 3:03Like we've said it before.
- 3:04I think when we started, we thought maybe like a few people would listen.
- 3:07Our families.
- 3:08Yeah, that's right.
- 3:09And now we got literally people all over the world.
- 3:12All over the world.
- 3:13We should tell them what we did at the gala for how we got people to engage in our podcast.
- 3:18Well, we did a tutorial.
- 3:20That's right, because a lot of people didn't know how to get a podcast.
- 3:23Well, we asked the people in the audience if they had listened to Coffee In The Park, and I'm sad to say the results were a little disappointing, Cam.
- 3:30I know, they were.
- 3:31But it's because they didn't know how to get a podcast.
- 3:33Honestly, they didn't know how to download the podcast.
- 3:35So we walked through that with them.
- 3:36We did.
- 3:37And we thank you, Mike Myshak, for bringing it to our attention, thinking that you could listen to this on CFCW.
- 3:44No, you can't listen to it on the radio, Mike.
- 3:48But everybody downloaded it, so now everybody knows how to listen to it.
- 3:52And speaking of the gala, what an event it was.
- 3:55Fantastic.
- 3:55And you know what?
- 3:56I actually just want to give a shout out to all of the nominees, but also the winners.
- 4:02Can I share who the winners were?
- 4:03Please do, because it was a great night.
- 4:05It was so much fun, and we have some great winners.
- 4:08Tell us who they are.
- 4:10So we had a number of categories, so bear with me everyone as I run through these categories.
- 4:15So we had Large Business Of The Year, which was the winner, Standard General here in Acheson.
- 4:20Yay, Standard General.
- 4:21Great business, great supporters of the ABA.
- 4:25Happy they one.
- 4:26Medium Business Of The Year was Nucor Environmental Solutions.
- 4:29Go Nucor.
- 4:30Small Business Of The Year was Rimex Supply Limited.
- 4:33Yeah, Rimex.
- 4:34Great people.
- 4:35Associate member of the year, ScotiaBank.
- 4:38ScotiaBank.
- 4:39They're good supporters of the ABA.
- 4:40They are great supporters of the ABA.
- 4:42The Innovation Award went to Northgate Modular.
- 4:45Yes.
- 4:46The Community Award.
- 4:47Now, we had these two individuals on our podcast.
- 4:50That's right.
- 4:51Mprint sign and printSolutions, Jan and Don.
- 4:54Yep, fantastic.
- 4:55And they are so deserving of that Community Award.
- 4:58They sure are.
- 4:58They do so much.
- 4:59They really do.
- 5:01We announced a new award.
- 5:03We did Podcast Guest Of The Year, Cam.
- 5:05That's right.
- 5:06It was so much fun.
- 5:08Podcast Guest Of The Year, and this year the winner was...
- 5:11Felix the Cat.
- 5:11Felix the Cat.
- 5:12Bushell Transport.
- 5:13Listen, if you have not listened to the Felix the Cat podcast, you need to download it because it's awesome, but we gave Felix the award.
- 5:21We did.
- 5:22Unfortunately, he was double booked.
- 5:24He was.
- 5:24So his social media manager, Cheryl Glattacker, aka owner of Bushnell Transport, accepted on his behalf.
- 5:30I think Felix was at another cat convention or something like that.
- 5:33He travels and does cat things.
- 5:35So yeah.
- 5:36So that's kind of cool.
- 5:36That was that was another very well deserving award.
- 5:39It was.
- 5:40This next one was, I know when the committee met to make the decision, it was so tough.
- 5:44And that's the Women in Leadership Award.
- 5:47You know, that is such a great award.
- 5:49And I love that the ABA, we are so connected in promoting and encouraging women in leadership.
- 5:55It's fantastic.
- 5:56And the winner is?
- 5:57Tamara Sanderson, RST.
- 6:00Another podcast guest.
- 6:02That's right.
- 6:02Funny how that happened.
- 6:04It was not, full disclosure, the ABA does not pick the winners.
- 6:09You're right.
- 6:10It's an independent panel.
- 6:11Independent panel.
- 6:12That's right.
- 6:12But I mean, it's just so cool that we've had them on as guests and they won and that's really awesome.
- 6:17And to top off the evening, the Lifetime Achievement Award to Mr.
- 6:20Wes Wall.
- 6:21Wes Wall.
- 6:21And it was great.
- 6:22That was a great evening.
- 6:23We had lots of fun, lots of people thanking Wes, lots of people paying tribute to Wes.
- 6:29Even the Premier of Alberta sent a great video for Wes.
- 6:34And so it was a great night.
- 6:35Jennifer, you did an amazing job of the gala and you always do an amazing job of our awards.
- 6:40And so folks, next year, you won't want to miss this event.
- 6:44You won't.
- 6:45And Cam, we even had some international guests join us at this gala.
- 6:49That's right.
- 6:49Crockett, Texas, the mayor of Crockett, Texas.
- 6:52That's right.
- 6:52We had a delegation from Crockett, Texas, led by their mayor, and they presented Wes with the key of the city, which was really cool.
- 7:00Do you think Wes is going to let me borrow that key when I want to go down to Crockett? To get into Crockett?
- 7:03I think he will.
- 7:04I think he's probably getting it cut right now to hand out to a bunch of people.
- 7:07But that was such an amazing event and a lot of fun.
- 7:11So that was cool.
- 7:12That was a lot of fun.
- 7:13Jennifer, we need to get into it today.
- 7:16And you know what?
- 7:17We don't have a guest.
- 7:18So, don't turn us off.
- 7:20No, don't turn us off.
- 7:21Because today is going to be our Thanksgiving show.
- 7:25Because this weekend, coming up, is Thanksgiving in Canada.
- 7:30That's right.
- 7:30That's right.
- 7:31And so, there's lots of things that build up to Thanksgiving.
- 7:35That's right.
- 7:36It is different than American Thanksgiving.
- 7:38And we're going to talk a little bit about that.
- 7:39Yeah.
- 7:39So, why don't we just talk about that for a second?
- 7:42Because most of us know about Plymouth Rock and, you know, that guy that came.
- 7:48What's that guy's name?
- 7:50Christopher Columbus came, and, you know, the people met him on the shore, and they had turkey and all that kind of stuff.
- 7:58And people often say, well, where did Thanksgiving start in Canada?
- 8:03I want to know.
- 8:03Okay.
- 8:04So, I'm going to tell you.
- 8:04I'll give you a brief history lesson here.
- 8:06The story goes that in 1758, an English explorer named Martin Frobisher.
- 8:13Now, that may sound familiar if you know your Canada junk.
- 8:16That's right.
- 8:17He landed, came in to the bay there, Frobisher Bay, and they wanted to celebrate.
- 8:22So, they had a really big celebration and a really big dinner, and they had salted beef and biscuits and mushy peas, and they gave thanks for arriving in what was now Canada safely.
- 8:36And that was considered sort of to be the first Thanksgiving in Canada.
- 8:41But then that wasn't the end of it.
- 8:42In 1606, Samuel Champlain, he held a huge Thanksgiving feast between the Mi'kmaq and the French in Eastern Canada.
- 8:55And they had a great big feast, just like we do now.
- 8:58And you know what the number one food was?
- 9:01Cranberries.
- 9:02Cranberries?
- 9:03That's right, because they used cranberries in those days that were rich in vitamin C, or are rich in vitamin C to help to avoid scurvy.
- 9:09And so to celebrate Thanksgiving, they had cranberries and turkey and all kinds of things.
- 9:15And it became this big thing that they did year after year after year.
- 9:18But here's the interesting part, Jennifer.
- 9:21In Canada, the Thanksgiving that we know, the Thanksgiving Monday that we know today in October, Parliament declared it to be a holiday on January 31, 1957.
- 9:34Wait a minute, 1957?
- 9:36I know.
- 9:36We went all the way from the 1750s to 1957.
- 9:41That seems a little late in my opinion.
- 9:42I know.
- 9:43We came to the table a little late on that one.
- 9:45So anyway, that's the history of Thanksgiving in Canada.
- 9:49And I don't know what your family does on Thanksgiving.
- 9:52I know our family gets together and we have a big celebration and we eat.
- 9:57That's what we do.
- 9:57You know what?
- 9:58I always say that Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.
- 10:00Yeah, me too.
- 10:01And there's a number of reasons, I think, because it's really the first big holiday.
- 10:05That's right.
- 10:06After the summer is done.
- 10:08Yeah.
- 10:08Family always gets together.
- 10:11And it's just a time to kind of reflect and take a break and give thanks for everything.
- 10:16Yeah.
- 10:16Because there's so much going on today in people's lives, in the world today, that I think it's good to pause and reflect and be thankful for what you have.
- 10:25Yep, I agree with that.
- 10:26But you know what?
- 10:26You know why I like Thanksgiving?
- 10:28Because it's the first official holiday of the year we get to eat turkey.
- 10:32And gravy and stuffing and mashed potatoes and all the stuff that goes with that.
- 10:38And man, I can hardly wait actually till Monday because that's when my family is getting together.
- 10:43Let's talk about turkey for a minute.
- 10:44Have you noticed the price of turkey has like...
- 10:46Turkeys have skyrocketed.
- 10:47Inflation in turkey is ridiculous.
- 10:49What's the deal with that?
- 10:50Because the turkey is eating the same thing he did like 20 years ago.
- 10:53I don't know what's going on.
- 10:54I don't understand.
- 10:55My turkeys have skyrocketed in cost.
- 10:58I say my turkeys because I usually buy my turkey for our family.
- 11:01But it's unbelievable what's happened.
- 11:04It really is.
- 11:05I mean, I remember going last year and buying the turkey thinking, I just spent what on a turkey?
- 11:09I know.
- 11:10It's incredible.
- 11:11I mean, turkey, everything's gone up.
- 11:12I mean, everything's gone up.
- 11:14Potatoes have gone up, all that kind of stuff.
- 11:15But the turkey, for some reason, I mean, that's becoming an expensive bird.
- 11:20Sure is.
- 11:20Yeah.
- 11:21I didn't know it would cost a lot to raise a turkey, but I guess it does.
- 11:25I don't even know what they, I mean, they feed them stuff, but I don't know what they feed.
- 11:27Any turkey farmers out there, send us an email.
- 11:30No kidding.
- 11:31What are you feeding them?
- 11:32You must be feeding them pretty expensive stuff.
- 11:34But anyway, I don't care.
- 11:35I'm going to pay it because it's good and I love turkey.
- 11:38And so there's a lot of things, there's a lot of issues around the Thanksgiving dinner that families have.
- 11:44For example, do you put the stuffing in the bird or do you make it out of the bird?
- 11:49Oh, that's controversial.
- 11:50I know.
- 11:51Yeah.
- 11:51It could cause- What does your family do?
- 11:52Debates.
- 11:53Oh, it's in the bird.
- 11:53Yeah, we're in the bird too.
- 11:54Yeah.
- 11:55Yeah.
- 11:55No, stuffing in the bird.
- 11:56Stuffing in the bird.
- 11:57I know.
- 11:57And there's a lot of people who say, no, no, they make it outside the bird.
- 11:59But I'm telling you right now, folks, stuffing in the bird is the way to go.
- 12:03I agree.
- 12:03It's the way to go.
- 12:04So, you know, that can become a family issue.
- 12:06Well, it could.
- 12:06Yeah, I know.
- 12:07Sometimes in family, and they change up.
- 12:09That's the other thing.
- 12:10When families start changing up traditional recipes.
- 12:13Leave it alone.
- 12:14No, I know.
- 12:15The new generation comes in, we're going to try something new.
- 12:17Don't do anything new.
- 12:19The way it was is the way it was.
- 12:21That's the way it's to be.
- 12:22It's written in the Thanksgiving law book.
- 12:24Stay with it.
- 12:25Stay with it.
- 12:26Try something new another holiday season.
- 12:28Make up a holiday.
- 12:30National gopher day or something like that and have new food.
- 12:33But not on Thanksgiving.
- 12:34Stick with the traditional stuff.
- 12:36That's what I say.
- 12:37So your family, do they have all the big deal?
- 12:40Yeah, we have.
- 12:41Everybody comes together and of course, it's the big traditional turkey and stuffing and potatoes.
- 12:48Usually my mom makes homemade buns, which is the best.
- 12:51Homemade buns?
- 12:52Homemade buns.
- 12:53Come on.
- 12:54Serious.
- 12:55It's fantastic.
- 12:57I'm coming to your house.
- 12:57If I show up, don't be, I'll sit in the corner.
- 13:00I'll sit at the kids' table.
- 13:01I'll bring you some if there's any left.
- 13:03Usually there's none left.
- 13:04Yeah, I was gonna say, how can there be any?
- 13:06I mean, we're, you know, ours are cobs, but they're good too, but I'm telling you, homemade buns, that's incredible.
- 13:12And do you have a big, long table that you all sit at?
- 13:14Well, there's usually a big, long table plus a folding table to fit that many people.
- 13:19Right.
- 13:19Yeah.
- 13:19Do you have a kids' table?
- 13:22Not really.
- 13:23No?
- 13:24Everybody kind of mish-mashes together, so it's okay.
- 13:27I mean, in our family, when I was little, we had a kids' table, but I had to sit at the kids' table, but it's okay.
- 13:32I didn't mind, as long as I got my food.
- 13:34And so let's talk about that for a minute, because our family too, we all get together.
- 13:37We got a whole bunch of us going a couple generations now.
- 13:40And you know, great conversation, but there's some things you should never talk about at the Thanksgiving table.
- 13:47Listen, folks, if you want to have a smooth Thanksgiving, you are right.
- 13:52So we're giving you a tip here, folks.
- 13:53This is our Thanksgiving tip to you for a successful Thanksgiving.
- 13:57What should you not talk about?
- 13:58Oh, number one, politics.
- 14:01Do not talk politics at the Thanksgiving table.
- 14:05I agree.
- 14:06Not the place to talk about politics.
- 14:08People get mad.
- 14:09It ends up in a food fight.
- 14:10It gets ugly.
- 14:11Potatoes going across the table.
- 14:13You know what I'm saying?
- 14:13People storm out of the room.
- 14:15Don't talk about it.
- 14:16No, no, there's lots of other stuff to talk about.
- 14:18You don't have to talk about politics.
- 14:20Anything else you shouldn't talk about at the table?
- 14:22Probably religion.
- 14:23Yeah, I agree with that.
- 14:24Yeah, these days, just avoid it.
- 14:27You know, you don't want to get into those kinds of arguments.
- 14:29And so you want to have fun.
- 14:31There's lots, and like I say, there's lots of good things to talk about.
- 14:34You don't have to talk about those kinds of things.
- 14:36No, no.
- 14:37But I love getting together with my family.
- 14:39It's always a blast.
- 14:40There's great conversation, great fun, and it's good to see everybody.
- 14:44And well, Jennifer, we have turkey, we have mashed potatoes, we have gravy, we have dressing, but then when that's all done...
- 14:54Pumpkin pie.
- 14:55Pumpkin pie.
- 14:56Pumpkin pie.
- 14:57And for our listeners today...
- 14:59All right.
- 15:00This is so exciting.
- 15:01We've never done this on our podcast.
- 15:03This is exciting.
- 15:04It is.
- 15:05Cam and I went out and sourced three different pumpkin pie.
- 15:10That's right.
- 15:11So we're going to do a pumpkin pie tasting.
- 15:13We are.
- 15:14We're going to tell you where we got these pumpkin pies from and share a little bit about, as we're eating the pumpkin pie, what we think.
- 15:22Right.
- 15:22So, okay, folks.
- 15:23So now I know we don't do a video.
- 15:26We just do a voice podcast.
- 15:28So you're going to have to use your imagination a little bit.
- 15:30So we're sitting here in the wall coffee roaster.
- 15:33We're sitting at our table where we always do our podcast.
- 15:36And in front of us, in front of Jennifer, and in front of myself, we have a plate with three pieces of pumpkin pie.
- 15:45Okay, now, and we've got whipped cream, Jennifer.
- 15:47So here, so we're going to put some whipped cream.
- 15:49So what we're going to do is we're going to taste the pie and give you our sort of impression of each piece of pie from each place.
- 15:56So we're just going to put a little whipped cream.
- 15:58Now hang in there.
- 16:00I don't know if you can hear that.
- 16:02We'll put a little bit on Jennifer's here.
- 16:04A little bit of what you got to have whipped cream on pumpkin pie.
- 16:06Of course you have to have whipped cream on pumpkin pie.
- 16:09There you go.
- 16:09Okay, there we go.
- 16:10Pumpkin pie.
- 16:10All right, so we're going to do a little bit of a critique here of the pumpkin pie.
- 16:16This is a taste test.
- 16:18Now, how do we want to do this, Cam?
- 16:20Because this is new for us.
- 16:21Do we want to go individually and then tell everybody where the pumpkin pie was from?
- 16:26Okay.
- 16:27Or do we just want to say, hey, here's where we got the pies from, and here we go?
- 16:32Well, you know what?
- 16:32Let's do that.
- 16:33Okay.
- 16:34So we got the pumpkin pies.
- 16:35Right.
- 16:36Number one, Costco.
- 16:38Costco.
- 16:39You can't go wrong.
- 16:40$6.99 is a deal for pie at Costco.
- 16:44I'm just telling you right now.
- 16:45And if you've got a giant family coming, Oh yeah.
- 16:48Seriously.
- 16:48I mean, really.
- 16:49I mean, $6.99, it's a giant pie.
- 16:51You can cut it into like 37 pieces, whatever you need.
- 16:55It's amazing.
- 16:55It really is.
- 16:56All right.
- 16:58Freson Brothers.
- 16:58Freson Brothers.
- 16:59Go to your grocery store and get a pumpkin pie.
- 17:02The cool thing about Freson's is you can get half pies.
- 17:05That's right.
- 17:06They have a deal.
- 17:07So say on your Thanksgiving, there's only like two of you or three of you, which is good, but you don't need the whole pie.
- 17:13You can get a half a pumpkin pie.
- 17:14Which is so cool.
- 17:15I know.
- 17:16So yeah.
- 17:17And for those who aren't in Alberta and aren't familiar, Freson Brothers is like a grocery store.
- 17:22Yeah, a locally owned grocery store.
- 17:23So yeah.
- 17:24And they do all Alberta products and stuff like that.
- 17:26They're really good.
- 17:28And they bake everything right there.
- 17:29It's really good.
- 17:29All right.
- 17:30The third one.
- 17:31The third one comes from our friends over at Gather Bakery.
- 17:35That's right.
- 17:36It's Spruce Grove.
- 17:37And were they not nominated for an award this year in our gala?
- 17:40They sure were.
- 17:40They were nominated for Associate Member of the Year.
- 17:43Now there's a story.
- 17:44We're going to have them on our podcast because they have a great story. We are.
- 17:47So yeah.
- 17:48So okay.
- 17:48So we've got a piece of pie from Costco.
- 17:50We've got a piece of pie from Freson Brothers, and we've got a piece of pie from Gather Bakery.
- 17:56So are we going to take a taste of each and give a little critique on each?
- 17:59Okay.
- 18:00Which one?
- 18:00Do we have to say which one we're doing first or no?
- 18:03No.
- 18:03Okay.
- 18:04Just go.
- 18:04Okay.
- 18:04I'm going to go with this one here.
- 18:06All right.
- 18:07All right.
- 18:07This one here.
- 18:08Here we go, folks.
- 18:09Now just imagine.
- 18:10All right.
- 18:10You're all getting really hungry.
- 18:11I know.
- 18:13Oh, man.
- 18:13That's good pie.
- 18:15That's really good pie.
- 18:18Oh, this one has a really nice creamy texture.
- 18:19That is really good pie.
- 18:21Which one did you have?
- 18:22I had the Costco.
- 18:24That, you know, silky smooth, you know, very good pumpkiny flavor.
- 18:29You know, do I sound like Bobby Flay yet?
- 18:31Silky smooth, very good pumpkiny flavor.
- 18:33You know, it's really good.
- 18:34Which one did you have?
- 18:38Freson Brothers.
- 18:38Freson Brothers.
- 18:39How was that?
- 18:40It's delicious.
- 18:41Yeah.
- 18:41Okay.
- 18:43It's different than the Costco.
- 18:44Yeah.
- 18:45I don't know if it's nutmeg, but there's something really good.
- 18:49I don't even know what they put in pumpkin pie.
- 18:52So I don't know whether it's nutmeg or cinnamon or, okay, I'm going to try the Freson Brothers.
- 18:57Outstanding.
- 18:58Oh.
- 18:59Oh yeah.
- 19:00Nutmeg, yeah.
- 19:01Oh yeah, nutmeg.
- 19:02There's something.
- 19:03It has hints of nutmeg roasted over an open fire.
- 19:07I don't know.
- 19:09It's really good though.
- 19:10So I've had Costco.
- 19:11I've had Freson's.
- 19:13Which one do you have?
- 19:15I've also had Costco's.
- 19:16Okay, so are we ready for the last one?
- 19:18Ready for Gather.
- 19:18This is Gather.
- 19:19This is Gather.
- 19:20Wait, I'm going to put more whipped cream on my Gather.
- 19:25I'm going to just put a little more whipped cream.
- 19:27Okay, there.
- 19:28Okay.
- 19:29All right.
- 19:30Ready?
- 19:30One, two, three.
- 19:31Oh, hang on, hang on.
- 19:32That's Gather, right?
- 19:33Yeah.
- 19:33Okay.
- 19:33Ready?
- 19:34One, two, three.
- 19:37Oh, that's very good.
- 19:40No, that's very good.
- 19:42Gather Bakery, you've outdone yourself.
- 19:43Yeah, pumpkin-y.
- 19:45Very pumpkin-y.
- 19:46Light.
- 19:47Light.
- 19:47refreshing.
- 19:48Fluffy.
- 19:48Fluffy.
- 19:50No, it is really light and fluffy.
- 19:51It honestly is.
- 19:52Oh, it is.
- 19:53I know that's silly for pie, but it is.
- 19:54Folks, this is amazing.
- 19:55I'm telling you right now, you would not go wrong with any of these.
- 19:59Oh, I agree.
- 20:00And so, you know, I'm just gonna, I just need another bite of this one here, if you don't mind.
- 20:03Just.
- 20:05Oh, my goodness.
- 20:07Unbelievable.
- 20:08That's incredible.
- 20:10Jennifer, we didn't get napkins.
- 20:12We did.
- 20:12Oh, you did.
- 20:13Good, good job.
- 20:13I'm glad.
- 20:14See, this is, man, this is why Jennifer's here.
- 20:16Okay, folks, now there you go.
- 20:18We had pumpkin pie from Gather Bakery, pumpkin pie from Costco, and pumpkin pie from Freson Brothers.
- 20:23And I'm just going to say, Jennifer, I think you wouldn't go wrong with any of those.
- 20:26I 100% agree with you, Cam.
- 20:28They are all very good.
- 20:29Fantastic pies all around.
- 20:31Kudos to all the pie makers.
- 20:32Absolutely.
- 20:33Gather Bakery, you did an excellent job of your pie.
- 20:36Folks, phone them up if you want one from there, because I think you have to order them ahead of time.
- 20:39I think you have to pre-order.
- 20:40Costco, you can just go down there.
- 20:42They put out about 9,000 pies every day.
- 20:44Because I think they're gone by the end of the day.
- 20:47And Freson Brothers, probably you'll want to get your pie there.
- 20:51And again, that's a good deal, because they do half pies.
- 20:53That's right.
- 20:54So if you need the half pie, you don't want the whole pie.
- 20:57But I would say all of those pies were excellent.
- 20:59Outstanding.
- 20:59Yeah.
- 21:00So a good way to end your Thanksgiving dinner.
- 21:02It is.
- 21:03Yeah.
- 21:03Pumpkin pie, whipped cream, any of those places.
- 21:06Support them.
- 21:07And I think that's really great.
- 21:08And you know what, and then you get to just, I don't know about you, Jennifer, but after I'm done eating, after I've had my turkey and my dessert and all that, I just need to find a place to crash.
- 21:18Sit on a couch.
- 21:19I know.
- 21:20And hopefully you're wearing stretchy pants.
- 21:21That's right.
- 21:22Because like, it's really important, people.
- 21:25Don't get dressed up for Thanksgiving dinner.
- 21:27Come in your sweatpants.
- 21:28That's totally acceptable.
- 21:29Yeah, come as you are and just eat.
- 21:31Yeah.
- 21:32And you know that tryptophan in the turkey?
- 21:35Man, oh man, oh man.
- 21:36Makes you a little sleepy.
- 21:37Knocks you out for a while.
- 21:38And so I know at our house after dinner, you look around everywhere and there's people find their, their chair or their sofa or whatever, and they're out.
- 21:46And that's Thanksgiving.
- 21:47And it's great.
- 21:48I absolutely love it.
- 21:49It's fantastic.
- 21:50No, I do too.
- 21:51It's just again, it's a great time to get together.
- 21:54And if you can't get together with family, that's OK, too.
- 21:58Yeah, that's right.
- 22:00If maybe your family is out of town or away and you're not able to get together with them, listen, you know what?
- 22:06Hey, just spend a day, find some friends, lots of people like that.
- 22:11That's right.
- 22:11Hang out together, go to a restaurant, do whatever.
- 22:13Lots of restaurants have Thanksgiving meals.
- 22:15Absolutely.
- 22:16And then go buy your pumpkin pie at one of these places and come back to your place and play a little cards and eat a little pumpkin pie.
- 22:22Exactly.
- 22:23It's fantastic.
- 22:24It is fantastic.
- 22:24You know, and it is.
- 22:26Thanksgiving and holidays like this are about people just getting together and hanging out.
- 22:30And maybe you know somebody who's doesn't have anywhere to go on Thanksgiving, why don't you invite them over and bring them over to your place?
- 22:38And you say, I don't know if I'd want them to meet my family.
- 22:40Hey, listen, it'll be the best time of their life.
- 22:42So bring them over.
- 22:43Bring them over.
- 22:43And they'll have a good time.
- 22:45And it's really cool.
- 22:47Jennifer, we always ask our guests a question, a final question on our podcast.
- 22:54And I think we have a good final question for you and me today.
- 22:57I think so.
- 22:58So I'm going to ask, can I ask you the final question first?
- 23:01Sure.
- 23:01And then you can ask me, but I'll ask you first.
- 23:03Jennifer, what are you most thankful for?
- 23:06Oh, what am I most thankful for?
- 23:08I'm thankful for a lot of things, Cam.
- 23:10But for me, I'm so thankful for my family.
- 23:15And whether, you know, my husband, my son, my parents, my siblings, I'm so thankful that everybody's around and everybody's healthy.
- 23:25I'm really, really thankful for that.
- 23:27Yeah.
- 23:28Yeah, you know, and that's the greatest answer you could ever give.
- 23:33It really is.
- 23:34And we are thankful for those people in our lives.
- 23:37Fantastic.
- 23:38And you?
- 23:39Well, like you, you know, I'm thankful for many, many things.
- 23:43And, you know, unfortunately, sometimes it takes Thanksgiving or holidays like this to actually take a step back and reflect.
- 23:54I am extremely thankful for my wife who puts up with me.
- 23:58That's amazing right there in itself.
- 24:01I'm so thankful for my daughter, who is just absolutely incredible and the light of my life, for sure.
- 24:08And I'm most amazingly thankful for my mom, who's 93 years old.
- 24:13You got to meet my mom.
- 24:15She came to the gala.
- 24:16She did.
- 24:17I love meeting your mom.
- 24:19What a lady.
- 24:19She had the best time.
- 24:20She went shopping for an outfit for a whole day to find the right outfit for the gala.
- 24:26And she's 93 years old and never really told the story.
- 24:30Maybe one day we'll tell our stories.
- 24:32But my mom is a single mom.
- 24:34My father died when I was two years old, and my mom raised me on her own.
- 24:38I'm an only child.
- 24:39Well, that says it all right there.
- 24:41But I'm an only child, and I'm so thankful for my mom.
- 24:45And I'm thankful for my friends.
- 24:47I'm thankful for my job.
- 24:49And you know what else?
- 24:50You know what I'm thankful for too?
- 24:52I'm thankful for you, Jennifer, because you and I get to do this and work together.
- 24:56And a year ago, I never ever would have dreamed that we were doing this.
- 25:02And I'm really thankful for you and that you put up with me and some of my crazy, stupid ideas.
- 25:07And so you know what?
- 25:09I think it's a great year to be thankful for a lot of things.
- 25:12I agree, yeah.
- 25:13Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:13We live in a great country.
- 25:15We live in a great province.
- 25:17We have family around us, thankful for our family, and never take them for granted ever.
- 25:22And so folks, I know this is a different one.
- 25:24We didn't have a guest.
- 25:26I guess our guest was Pumpkin Pie.
- 25:27Our guest was Pumpkin Pie.
- 25:28That's right, we had Pumpkin Pie as our guest.
- 25:30It was like a little food critique.
- 25:31That's right, we should do this more often.
- 25:33Maybe, so if you own a restaurant or something and you need somebody to do a critique.
- 25:37Hey, we're happy to give you a shout out.
- 25:38We'll come do a live, a live spot from your restaurant.
- 25:41Of course we will.
- 25:41And we would be happy.
- 25:43I thought we did a pretty good job of critiquing the Pumpkin Pie.
- 25:45I think so too.
- 25:47And so, yeah, that was our guest today.
- 25:48So everybody, thank you for listening.
- 25:51And thanks for tuning us in to our Thanksgiving special.
- 25:56It was great.
- 25:57Hey, Jennifer, we're done.
- 26:00We're done.
- 26:00But don't worry folks, we'll be back with another guest next week.
- 26:03We will have a guest next week.
- 26:04We promise.
- 26:05We're not going to make this a regular event of critiquing food.
- 26:09But we have a great guest next week.
- 26:11And so wherever you get your podcasts, we can download them.
- 26:14Bye.
- 26:15Oh, sorry, just saying, bye to some people walking out of the coffee shop here.
- 26:19Wherever you get your podcasts, or you can go to www.Achesonbusiness.com and you can download it off of there as well.
- 26:27And so thanks everybody.
- 26:29I hope you have a great Thanksgiving.
- 26:31Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
- 26:32Thanks for listening.
- 26:33See you next time.
- 26:34See you next week.
