- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. When the shower of no's comes my way,
- 0:32Speaker 1: I will no longer take their ignorance as a personal
- 0:34Speaker 1: attack against my character, but will chalk it up to
- 0:38Speaker 1: their ignorant and clouded hearts. When the fear of alienation
- 0:43Speaker 1: arises in me, I will rest my mind and think
- 0:48Speaker 1: back on the words you spoke to Paul in Acts 18.
- 0:53Speaker 1: For in your word to him, you reassured him that
- 0:56Speaker 1: you have many people in the city of Corinth that
- 0:59Speaker 1: are yours. and who will rally around Paul when his
- 1:03Speaker 1: time of need would come. Right now, I receive that
- 1:08Speaker 1: word for myself. I gladly welcome the kingdom connections that
- 1:13Speaker 1: are appointed to me at just the right time. Thank you, Jesus,
- 1:19Speaker 1: that you are always looking out for me as I
- 1:22Speaker 1: walk out your purpose for my life. In Jesus' name, amen.

- 1:48Speaker 2: Paul in Corinth. In our last story, we were able
- 1:53Speaker 2: to read the letters written by Paul to the church
- 1:55Speaker 2: in Thessalonica. Paul encouraged them to continue in their pursuit
- 1:59Speaker 2: of a quiet and peaceful life that honors God. Now
- 2:03Speaker 2: we see a new church emerge in one of the
- 2:05Speaker 2: darkest cities in the known world, Corinth. The church in
- 2:10Speaker 2: Corinth would be birthed through struggle, so much so that
- 2:13Speaker 2: Paul would need to remain a year and a half
- 2:16Speaker 2: to train them.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Inspired by the book of Acts.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Hello, this is Jack Graham once again with today's episode
- 2:25Speaker 4: of the Bible in a Year podcast. At our last
- 2:28Speaker 4: time together, we heard how Paul and Silas planted a
- 2:31Speaker 4: church in Thessalonica and discipled new believers in order to
- 2:35Speaker 4: lead the church forward. They faced opposition and were forced
- 2:39Speaker 4: to flee undercover for a night in Berea, where they
- 2:43Speaker 4: found Jewish believers who were more open to reasoning through
- 2:46Speaker 4: the scriptures to determine what was truly God's Word. We
- 2:50Speaker 4: then heard how Paul went to Athens and shared the
- 2:53Speaker 4: gospel with Greeks in the public square, using relatable, relevant
- 2:57Speaker 4: language to introduce them to the God they'd never met.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Today we'll hear how Paul brought light into the dark
- 3:05Speaker 4: city of Corinth. He will meet fellow tent makers who
- 3:08Speaker 4: would become not only partners in the marketplace, but in
- 3:12Speaker 4: mission as well. Despite the sin that abounded in this place,
- 3:16Speaker 4: the gospel took hold Jesus came alive in the hearts
- 3:19Speaker 4: of those who received him, and Paul remained many months
- 3:23Speaker 4: in order to disciple these brand new Christians. Let's listen
- 3:27Speaker 4: now to this reading from the book of Acts.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Paul felt the ocean breeze caress his face as he
- 3:34Speaker 2: descended into the city of Corinth. This ancient port city
- 3:38Speaker 2: was bustling with culture and trade. It was Julius Caesar
- 3:41Speaker 2: who had restored the city to its former glory. Its
- 3:44Speaker 2: buildings were large and bright, gazing over the oceans. Its
- 3:48Speaker 2: streets were busy with trade and business, yet the city
- 3:51Speaker 2: was not for the weak-hearted. Many dangers lurked in the
- 3:54Speaker 2: city of Corinth. Its port made it a hub for
- 3:57Speaker 2: many dangerous people, and its temple to Aphrodite made it
- 4:00Speaker 2: a city fueled by carnal pleasures. Paul knew that Corinth's
- 4:04Speaker 2: outward beauty was not to be trusted. It was often
- 4:07Speaker 2: said that in order to survive Corinth, one must be
- 4:10Speaker 2: brave and unwavering. So Paul walked the city streets, looking
- 4:15Speaker 2: for any sign of familiar faces or buildings. He knew
- 4:18Speaker 2: the first step was to find like-minded people and seek
- 4:21Speaker 2: their protection. Paul walked past the temple of Aphrodite. Male
- 4:25Speaker 2: and female prostitutes lay on the temple steps, beckoning for
- 4:29Speaker 2: Paul to draw near. Paul looked away and fixed his
- 4:32Speaker 2: gaze towards the docks. There he saw a man thrown
- 4:35Speaker 2: overboard with a weight around his neck. The city would
- 4:38Speaker 2: take Paul's soul if he was not careful. After a
- 4:42Speaker 2: day of searching, Paul met a Jewish couple named Aquila
- 4:45Speaker 2: and Priscilla. Claudius had commanded that all Jews residing in
- 4:49Speaker 2: Rome be banished, so the two of them found themselves
- 4:52Speaker 2: living in Corinth with the other exiles. Paul and Aquila
- 4:56Speaker 2: became good friends, since both of them were tent makers
- 4:59Speaker 2: by trade. The two of them mended tents together and
- 5:02Speaker 2: preached in the nearby synagogues. Soon Silas and Timothy journeyed
- 5:06Speaker 2: to meet Paul. A few weeks had passed and Paul
- 5:09Speaker 2: was becoming well acquainted with some of the Corinthian Jews.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Daily he would speak of Jesus and preach the good
- 5:15Speaker 2: news of forgiveness. Yet they would deny him daily. Each
- 5:19Speaker 2: day they would mock him and mock Christ. They would
- 5:23Speaker 2: blaspheme against Jesus and curse him. However, the Gentiles were
- 5:27Speaker 2: receiving Christ with gladness. So Paul wiped the dust off
- 5:31Speaker 2: his robe and lifted his hands, saying, Your blood be
- 5:34Speaker 2: on your own heads. From now on I will turn
- 5:37Speaker 2: my attention to the Gentiles. As Paul continued in ministry,
- 5:42Speaker 2: many Corinthians came to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. prostitutes, sailors, thieves, craftsmen,
- 5:49Speaker 2: and Roman guards came together at the feet of Jesus
- 5:51Speaker 2: to worship. One night Paul was tossing and turning in
- 5:56Speaker 2: his bed. Sweat beat down his neck. Even the ocean
- 5:59Speaker 2: breeze could not cool him down. He was riddled with
- 6:02Speaker 2: anxious fear. Fear of the Jews. Fear of sinning with
- 6:06Speaker 2: the prostitutes. Fear of being stabbed or beaten. All of
- 6:10Speaker 2: these things rushed upon Paul with great force. So he
- 6:14Speaker 2: cried out to God, and whispered sweet hymns to comfort
- 6:17Speaker 2: him in the night. As Paul drifted off to sleep,
- 6:20Speaker 2: the Lord came to him in a dream, saying, Be
- 6:23Speaker 2: of good courage, Paul. Keep speaking and do not be silent.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I have gone before you, and I am with you.
- 6:30Speaker 2: No one will attack you, for there are many in
- 6:32Speaker 2: this city who belong to me. Calmed by the presence
- 6:36Speaker 2: of God, Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and
- 6:38Speaker 2: a half. He would teach the word of God and
- 6:41Speaker 2: build up leaders in the Corinthian church. However, there was
- 6:44Speaker 2: a dark force arising in the Jews of Corinth. They
- 6:48Speaker 2: made a united attack against Paul. As he was mending
- 6:51Speaker 2: tents near the marketplace, they ambushed him. Paul was once
- 6:55Speaker 2: again met with a fury of fists and feet to
- 6:57Speaker 2: his face and ribs. He was tackled to the floor
- 7:00Speaker 2: and bound. The Jews sacrificed the shalom peace of God
- 7:05Speaker 2: for the sake of violence against their brother. So they
- 7:08Speaker 2: brought him to the court, hoping to get him sentenced
- 7:11Speaker 2: to prison or banished. The Jews brought Paul before Galileo,
- 7:15Speaker 2: the pro-council of Achaia. They spat at Paul and pointed, saying,
- 7:20Speaker 2: This man is telling people to worship God apart from
- 7:23Speaker 2: our traditions. He ought to be punished. Galileo looked down
- 7:27Speaker 2: from his high platform. He leaned back from his desk
- 7:30Speaker 2: and laughed. Are you joking?
- 7:32Speaker 5: He scoffed.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I thought this was a matter of crime. but it
- 7:36Speaker 2: is just your petty Jewish law. Get out of my
- 7:38Speaker 2: sight and settle this among yourselves. Livid, the Jews brought
- 7:42Speaker 2: a man named Sustan before Gallio and beat him nearly
- 7:46Speaker 2: to death. Sustan was also a believer, so they wanted
- 7:49Speaker 2: to show Gallio the severity of their crimes. But Gallio
- 7:53Speaker 2: was a Roman and couldn't care less about the affairs
- 7:56Speaker 2: of the Jews. So the Corinthian church emerged from a
- 7:59Speaker 2: dark and wicked city. The church would have to be
- 8:02Speaker 2: on guard and alert if it was to survive. Paul
- 8:05Speaker 2: knew this and stayed a long time to ensure they
- 8:08Speaker 2: were taken care of. However, the Corinthian church would prove
- 8:11Speaker 2: to be difficult for Paul. When he left, they would
- 8:14Speaker 2: fall prey to different schemes of false teachers and corrupt practices.
- 8:18Speaker 2: It would only be through a stiff rebuke from Paul
- 8:21Speaker 2: that they would return to their relationship with Jesus.
- 8:28Speaker 4: As we begin today's reading, we find Paul in the
- 8:31Speaker 4: busy port town of Corinth. It was a place where
- 8:34Speaker 4: commerce abounded and so did sin, especially immorality, sexual sin.
- 8:40Speaker 4: This was where the temple of Aphrodite was located and
- 8:43Speaker 4: worshipers of this false god indulged in all manner of
- 8:47Speaker 4: sexual immorality. It pervaded and perversed the culture and would
- 8:52Speaker 4: be a battle the Christians in Corinth would have to
- 8:54Speaker 4: fight and be prepared against these temptations. Paul met two Jews,
- 9:00Speaker 4: a husband and wife named Aquila and Priscilla. They were
- 9:04Speaker 4: tent makers like him, and he soon joined them in
- 9:07Speaker 4: the marketplace to support his missionary efforts. As he did
- 9:11Speaker 4: in every city, Paul devoted time to sharing the good
- 9:14Speaker 4: news of Jesus with both Jews and Gentiles. He went
- 9:18Speaker 4: to the synagogue every Sabbath and reasoned through the scriptures
- 9:21Speaker 4: to show people who Jesus is and why his claims
- 9:25Speaker 4: could be believed. This was a common theme in Paul's ministry,
- 9:29Speaker 4: and it reminds us that our faith is not blind acceptance.
- 9:32Speaker 4: but reasonable based upon genuine, legitimate truth. God has given
- 9:38Speaker 4: us minds with which to reason, and He has revealed
- 9:40Speaker 4: Himself through His Word, the Bible, and we can have
- 9:43Speaker 4: confidence and trust the Bible and therefore believe and have
- 9:47Speaker 4: faith in God and the things that God says in
- 9:49Speaker 4: His Word. Soon Paul was joined by Silas and Timothy,
- 9:53Speaker 4: and together they continued to share the gospel. But it
- 9:57Speaker 4: was tiring work, and day after day Paul felt the
- 10:00Speaker 4: rejection and ridicule that came from religious people, until finally
- 10:04Speaker 4: he had had enough. He wrote them off in his mind,
- 10:07Speaker 4: resolving to speak only to Gentiles who were open to
- 10:11Speaker 4: the gospel. It's a relatable experience. Many times people who
- 10:16Speaker 4: are religious, even members of our own family, and closest
- 10:20Speaker 4: circles can frustrate us because they reject the truth of
- 10:23Speaker 4: Jesus Christ. But don't miss what happened to Paul as
- 10:27Speaker 4: we read in Acts 18 verse 9. One night, the
- 10:31Speaker 4: Lord spoke to Paul in a vision, Do not be afraid.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Keep on speaking. Do not be silent. This is great
- 10:39Speaker 4: encouragement for us today. We must not be silent, even
- 10:42Speaker 4: in the face of rejection. We can expect rejection and
- 10:47Speaker 4: move forward through it. It can be disheartening and disappointing,
- 10:51Speaker 4: but we must not be silent in our mission to
- 10:54Speaker 4: take the message of Jesus Christ to the world, beginning
- 10:57Speaker 4: with those nearby, closest to us, our neighbors, our family
- 11:01Speaker 4: and friends, and to the nations. So we heard then
- 11:05Speaker 4: that Paul listened to God's words to him and persevered.
- 11:08Speaker 4: He stayed in Corinth, teaching and preaching God's word. And
- 11:12Speaker 4: the church was growing there, but so was opposition. Finally,
- 11:17Speaker 4: the angry religious crowd in opposition to Paul, took him
- 11:21Speaker 4: before the Roman governor. They accused him of teaching about
- 11:24Speaker 4: a God that wasn't part of their religious traditions. This
- 11:28Speaker 4: Roman ruler wasn't interested, really. This wasn't a legal or
- 11:32Speaker 4: criminal matter. He sent them away, no doubt frustrated that
- 11:36Speaker 4: Paul was free to continue teaching about Jesus. It was
- 11:39Speaker 4: a victory, albeit a small one, and one that allowed
- 11:43Speaker 4: Paul to remain there, discipling believers and growing the church.
- 11:47Speaker 4: And this was such an important task. The darkness in
- 11:50Speaker 4: Corinth was strong, seeping into the society and threatening to
- 11:54Speaker 4: poison the burgeoning, growing church. Later, Paul would write two
- 11:59Speaker 4: letters to the church in Corinth, urging the believers to
- 12:02Speaker 4: turn back to Jesus and root out false teaching and
- 12:05Speaker 4: evil practices that had found their way into the church.
- 12:09Speaker 4: His words would serve as a reminder to us today
- 12:12Speaker 4: to always be vigilant in truth, rejecting the sin and
- 12:16Speaker 4: the culture that surrounds us and holding true to our
- 12:19Speaker 4: identity and our commitment to Christ. Let's pray. Dear God,
- 12:24Speaker 4: we thank you for today's reading and the reminder that
- 12:28Speaker 4: we must never be silent in the face of opposition
- 12:31Speaker 4: or rejection, but always speak the truth of your word.
- 12:34Speaker 4: May we boldly share the gospel of Jesus Christ to
- 12:37Speaker 4: our neighbors and to the nations. As long as we
- 12:40Speaker 4: have breath in our lungs, may we keep speaking the
- 12:43Speaker 4: name of Jesus and delivering his truth. Amen.
