- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Well it's time I dropped this episode about
- 0:03Speaker 1: my visit to City and States Power one hundred reception
- 0:07Speaker 1: and Frank Morano, firstly, thank you for connecting me with
- 0:11Speaker 1: City and State eleven plus years ago. It's been quite
- 0:15Speaker 1: a run. And I love their updates in the morning
- 0:17Speaker 1: in the afternoon, and the fact they allow us as
- 0:20Speaker 1: an outlet to cover these events. And if you thought
- 0:23Speaker 1: I left that event empty handed, well I didn't. I
- 0:27Speaker 1: actually got an interview with a few of the Power
- 0:29Speaker 1: one hundred recipients at a very crucial time in New
- 0:33Speaker 1: York City. I mean, this city is in crisis. This
- 0:36Speaker 1: City and State Power one hundred comes to time with
- 0:39Speaker 1: our city and crisis, and the leaders of these communities,
- 0:44Speaker 1: more so than the politicians, are working to keep this
- 0:47Speaker 1: city going. One of those people is the Brooklyn Chamber
- 0:52Speaker 1: of Commerce CEO.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I'm here with Randy Pierce's presidency of a Brooklyn Chamber
- 0:57Speaker 2: of Commerce. Congratulations on being on this year. What's it
- 1:00Speaker 2: mean to you to be a leader in your community.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Well, first of all, I love my community. You know,
- 1:06Speaker 3: very few people can say that they live, work all
- 1:11Speaker 3: their career for their hometown. And Brooklyn's my pretty good hometown, definitely,
- 1:15Speaker 3: and that's what I've been able and blessed to do
- 1:17Speaker 3: all my life. You know, it's my first time on
- 1:20Speaker 3: the Power one hundred list for New York City. I'm
- 1:22Speaker 3: always on the Brooklyn list. So this is Brooklyn breaking
- 1:25Speaker 3: out a little bit. But the real heroes are mostly
- 1:29Speaker 3: everybody else on the list. I mean, people like Dan Garodnik,
- 1:32Speaker 3: for example. What he's been able to accomplish in terms
- 1:36Speaker 3: of the city of Yes, in terms of zoning reform,
- 1:38Speaker 3: are things that are going to have such a lasting
- 1:40Speaker 3: impact on the city. Moraud from New York City Immigration
- 1:45Speaker 3: Coalition right over there, my good friend. I mean, think
- 1:48Speaker 3: about what challenge is he's facing right now with his constituency.
- 1:53Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So there's a lot of great people on this list,
- 1:55Speaker 3: a lot of people I respect, a lot of people
- 1:57Speaker 3: I admire. There's someone I'm in good company.
- 2:00Speaker 2: There's so much focus on the national level, but all
- 2:02Speaker 2: these chambers of commerce are a life blood to the community,
- 2:05Speaker 2: aren't they.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Well, here's the thing, right, Chambers of commerce are really
- 2:10Speaker 3: set up to help small businesses, right, and that's why
- 2:12Speaker 3: you find them in any and every town in the USA.
- 2:17Speaker 3: And if you think about it, small businesses are really
- 2:19Speaker 3: what makes Brooklyn's neighborhood special. So you know, we're really
- 2:24Speaker 3: here to support the small business community. We've been doing
- 2:27Speaker 3: it for one hundred and seven years at in Brooklyn.
- 2:31Speaker 4: You know, Covid.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Enabled us to transform our service delivery model. Now we
- 2:37Speaker 3: do a lot directly in communities in neighborhood's, door to door.
- 2:41Speaker 3: You know, Colvid was tough on the small business community
- 2:44Speaker 3: and we had a different type of engagement strategy. But
- 2:46Speaker 3: the reality is chambers are always going to be relevant
- 2:48Speaker 3: as long as small businesses are relevant.
- 2:50Speaker 2: And that's why I preach out my podcast is it
- 2:52Speaker 2: came to the small business Saturday, Small business every day, right.
- 2:55Speaker 3: A hundred percent. Yeah, that's the other thing, right, you know,
- 2:57Speaker 3: we like to celebrate on small Business Saturday. We like
- 2:59Speaker 3: to celebrate do a ribbon cutting. We've been doing a
- 3:01Speaker 3: lot of ribbon cutting, a lot of new businesses that open.
- 3:03Speaker 1: So congratulations on that.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I just but I will say you're one hundred
- 3:06Speaker 3: percent right in that running a small business is the
- 3:09Speaker 3: three hundred and sixty five day year endeavor. So we
- 3:12Speaker 3: can't just look to support them, you know, one day
- 3:14Speaker 3: in time, but we have to support them every day.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Randy, thanks so much.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Joining appreciate you.
- 3:18Speaker 1: It is kind of neat to be able to bring
- 3:20Speaker 1: what I talk about in studio out on the road
- 3:23Speaker 1: with me to these different events, like the idea of
- 3:26Speaker 1: expanding the appreciation for small business not just on Small
- 3:30Speaker 1: Business Saturday, but small business every day. And I'm glad
- 3:34Speaker 1: Randy also agreed and does support his small businesses in Brooklyn. Now,
- 3:41Speaker 1: another big crisis going on is immigration, and actually immigration
- 3:47Speaker 1: was honored by the Power one hundred and we talked
- 3:52Speaker 1: with that honoree as well on Wednesday, February nineteenth.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Well, I've just referred to this gentleman heroes on the
- 4:03Speaker 2: Power one hundred dollars on.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Moron all the day.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Thanks so much for joining me on the one like
- 4:08Speaker 2: a network.
- 4:08Speaker 6: No, thank you for having me being a Power one hundred, but.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Lamely wants to me to be on this list and
- 4:14Speaker 2: to be a leader in your community. Thanks.
- 4:16Speaker 6: I think the Sydney and State continues to put out
- 4:19Speaker 6: really amazing lists and uplifting leaders whom across the city.
- 4:23Speaker 6: We're doing unique work for the betterment of the city
- 4:25Speaker 6: of New York and it's an honor to be honest.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Now handle, I'm a rachel. I understand this is a
- 4:31Speaker 2: very tough time. So what's your approach in this new
- 4:33Speaker 2: era we sort of find ourselfing.
- 4:35Speaker 6: I don't think we're in a new era. I think
- 4:37Speaker 6: that we're in the same era we've always been in,
- 4:39Speaker 6: where every wave of immigrants who has built the city
- 4:43Speaker 6: of the state continues to be scapegowdre. So it happens
- 4:46Speaker 6: to the Irish, happen to the Italians, It's happened to
- 4:48Speaker 6: every other generation after them. We just have to do
- 4:51Speaker 6: better as people to really be welcoming and help people
- 4:55Speaker 6: integrate and have the tools that they need to succeed here.
- 4:57Speaker 6: Because we know that there is no new work withoutimiers.
- 5:01Speaker 2: And obviously there's somebody in the community like yourself that
- 5:03Speaker 2: are doing things. But is there a time with you know,
- 5:06Speaker 2: relying on government if you will, Like.
- 5:08Speaker 1: How does that work? What are you hoping for?
- 5:10Speaker 6: Look, we have champions in government at every level of government,
- 5:12Speaker 6: So you know, we have good people in the city council,
- 5:16Speaker 6: we have great people in the state legislator, we have
- 5:19Speaker 6: some allies across the board. And the keys here is
- 5:22Speaker 6: that we want people.
- 5:22Speaker 4: To remember who.
- 5:24Speaker 6: They are, who their families are and that no one
- 5:27Speaker 6: should struggle simply for being someone different.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Absolutely, well, thanks for joining us here.
- 5:34Speaker 1: The work that mister Alwaday has is a cutout for
- 5:39Speaker 1: him because it does feel like these raids are happening
- 5:43Speaker 1: to not just the violent illegals, but a lot of
- 5:46Speaker 1: those who are undocumented, and that that needs to change
- 5:49Speaker 1: as well. So his work's cut out for them. And
- 5:52Speaker 1: I pray that those who are here rightfully so and
- 6:00Speaker 1: are contributing to society are indeed spared as these raids.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I also pray target those that are violent that are
- 6:14Speaker 1: not controlling the sidey in fact harming society. So it's
- 6:18Speaker 1: a fine line. And I admire President Awade for the
- 6:24Speaker 1: new immigration Collition for fighting the good fight on this
- 6:29Speaker 1: to try and protect those who deserve to stay here
- 6:34Speaker 1: and be here as a contributing member of society. Now,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I did happen to get the one hundredth person on
- 6:42Speaker 1: the list for even a brief second. On my podcast,
- 6:46Speaker 1: Sealyn the co executive director of Open Plans, about what
- 6:49Speaker 1: it means for her to be a leader in this community,
- 6:53Speaker 1: both city and state and locally in her own.
- 6:57Speaker 2: With another heavy hitter of per one Slyne, Congratulations tonight,
- 7:01Speaker 2: Thank you so much. What's the meaning to be honored
- 7:02Speaker 2: by City and State and to serve your community and
- 7:05Speaker 2: be a leader in your community. Well, honestly, I have
- 7:08Speaker 2: a great stuff at the organization I run with a plan,
- 7:11Speaker 2: so to me, this is really about all of.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Them and the amazing art we've been doing.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Together for many years. Well, hopefully I have it on
- 7:18Speaker 2: extended podcasts someday soon, so we'd love that. Thank you.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Now, I mentioned politicians were honored, and someone I've seen
- 7:28Speaker 1: around the parade roots and as the Manhattan Boro president
- 7:31Speaker 1: now in city council, Gail Brewer. I had the very
- 7:34Speaker 1: honor of welcoming her to the woodling Up Network.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I'm your city councilman, Gale Brewer, formerly booked Manhattan Boro President.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I've seen around town a lot. Nice to finally meet
- 7:45Speaker 2: you here and have you on my show. So talk
- 7:47Speaker 2: about you know this event City in State Powell went
- 7:50Speaker 2: undred talk about it and being on the list as well.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Well.
- 7:54Speaker 5: City and Date as a news organization is phenomenal. We
- 7:58Speaker 5: all read it in the morning and night and again
- 8:01Speaker 5: its denominal information that is great reporter. So to be
- 8:05Speaker 5: on the list with that kind of news organization is
- 8:08Speaker 5: an honor office and I'm a great lyrics.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Now there's a lot of price going on here. What's
- 8:14Speaker 2: your mester constituents? As we sit here tonight off February nineteenth,
- 8:17Speaker 2: how do you calm down your constituents? I might have
- 8:19Speaker 2: been reading everything going on.
- 8:20Speaker 5: Well, we have a great newsletter, l you probably should
- 8:22Speaker 5: gonna copy of the gave information at every single Monday,
- 8:26Speaker 5: Thursday and Saturday. And you know they know I've been
- 8:30Speaker 5: doing it in a long time. So for me, it's
- 8:32Speaker 5: all about making for the day house responsive to their question.
- 8:36Speaker 1: That's what I very honored to have the long time
- 8:41Speaker 1: legend Gail Brewer on this network through the City in
- 8:46Speaker 1: State Power one hundred. Now, I wanted to save this
- 8:49Speaker 1: part for last, Greg Bishop. We did an incredible job
- 8:52Speaker 1: as the MC a week ago read off the one
- 8:57Speaker 1: hundred names, and you know, City and State named the
- 9:01Speaker 1: three most powerful New Yorkers, ranking in at number one
- 9:10Speaker 1: was Governor Hokeel, number two was President Donald Trump, and
- 9:15Speaker 1: number three was Mayor Eric Adams. But here's the reaction
- 9:19Speaker 1: from fifty four East fifty fourth Street when Bishop, after
- 9:25Speaker 1: going through ninety seven names, reeled off the Big Three
- 9:31Speaker 1: to end the presentation, the President.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Of the United States, Donald Trump, the Mayor of New
- 9:39Speaker 4: York City, Eric Adams, and the number one Power one
- 9:43Speaker 4: Hunter of New York City, the Governor of New York State.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Athey Hogel that day, all one hundred around over fall.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And this is why I love City and State. It's
- 9:57Speaker 1: so in tune in New York City. It's so in
- 9:59Speaker 1: tune not just the political but the cultural scene of
- 10:03Speaker 1: the city. And I'm very honored that we got to
- 10:05Speaker 1: be part of that reception. Commissioner Tucker of the FDN
- 10:11Speaker 1: Y did a tremendous keynote address, and then Dan Garodnick
- 10:17Speaker 1: as well. I'm looking through photos here and I see
- 10:22Speaker 1: that they did find me in the background when Dan
- 10:27Speaker 1: Groodnick was speaking. So it was a fun event overall
- 10:31Speaker 1: and a very important one. I mean to highlight all
- 10:34Speaker 1: these influential New Yorkers, it's special and to be in
- 10:38Speaker 1: that same room with a lot of these influential New
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yorkers is just an honor. So I hope to do
- 10:46Speaker 1: it again. City and State, thanks for having me out
- 10:49Speaker 1: to cover the event, and we'll do more down the road.
- 10:53Speaker 1: In twenty twenty five, and beyond here on Alex Skerrett's
- 10:56Speaker 1: one Leg Up Network,
