Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: What if you were given a choice, a choice between
- 0:06Speaker 1: life and death, but choosing life would mean enduring pain
- 0:10Speaker 1: beyond comprehension. This is the survival story of Mary Vincent.
- 0:16Speaker 1: The odds were most certainly not her favor, but when
- 0:20Speaker 1: her attacker left her for dead after throwing her down
- 0:23Speaker 1: a thirty foot embankment, she made a choice, a choice
- 0:28Speaker 1: to choose life, a choice to not let evil prevail.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Good warning the following podcast the graphic content materials in
- 0:41Speaker 2: audience listener, just question. Hey guys, it's Nicole and this has.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Been and you are listening to Wicked and Grim, a
- 1:12Speaker 1: true crime podcast.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And just like that, we have a new intro boom
- 1:17Speaker 2: boom boom. That was pretty pretty slick, well done.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Oh shit, well I had to take a few takes.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie because you can't fumble on a
- 1:25Speaker 1: fucking intro like that.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Well, third times a charm, though you nailed it on
- 1:27Speaker 2: the third attempt. Yeah, there you go. It's kind of exciting. Actually,
- 1:30Speaker 2: I enjoyed that. Yeah. I think it's a little little
- 1:33Speaker 2: interesting way to give you guys a bit of a
- 1:35Speaker 2: feeler for what we're gonna be talking about today.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Instead of always being.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Like, hey, it's Nicoll. Yeah. So and then sifting through
- 1:41Speaker 2: our little bit of an intro of like yeapping and
- 1:43Speaker 2: catching guys up on stuff, which we're still gonna do totally,
- 1:45Speaker 2: but this way you at least get that understanding and what's.
- 1:48Speaker 1: To come, yeah, and it kind of gets your little
- 1:50Speaker 1: excitement of what's to come.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, the blood flowing, the thought's going, you know, and
- 1:55Speaker 2: the nerves and the hair in the back of your
- 1:57Speaker 2: next standing up because no one likes to hear that
- 1:58Speaker 2: kind of shit, because that's why you guys here listening.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I'm very excited. I was a little jelly of your
- 2:04Speaker 1: survival story, so I had to had to do one
- 2:06Speaker 1: of my am because it's kind of fun to research.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Actually, I think we should do some more survival stories.
- 2:10Speaker 1: When the outcome isn't super gram, it's kind of nice.
- 2:13Speaker 2: It was, and it was actually really awesome to talk
- 2:15Speaker 2: about someone who had strength like that and actually to
- 2:17Speaker 2: come out on top. Oh so powerful stuff, no kidding.
- 2:21Speaker 2: So yeah, we'll definitely be doing some more survival stories,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and you guys should send us a request on survival story.
- 2:26Speaker 2: If you guys have survival stories you want to hear specifically,
- 2:28Speaker 2: hit us up, whether it's an email or whether it's
- 2:31Speaker 2: an Instagram or something like that, just tell.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Us we did get a couple after the last one,
- 2:36Speaker 1: because I think people enjoyed it, so yeah, yes, a.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Little more uplifting than hearing well, and then they fucking
- 2:43Speaker 2: died and that sucks because that does fucking suck. Oh
- 2:47Speaker 2: my gosh, well that's one way. Well it does. It
- 2:50Speaker 2: fucking sucks here in that right, So yeah, over and over.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Yeah, And I just wanted to note before I forget.
- 2:56Speaker 1: So last week we put two episodes out, yes, and
- 3:01Speaker 1: the second one was the Lacy Peterson case, and that
- 3:04Speaker 1: one is actually showing up below. What was your case again, Alison?
- 3:10Speaker 2: I have fuck what's your last name? Oh no?
- 3:15Speaker 1: Oh no, Yeah, so that Alison one came out first,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and then Lacy Peterson, but it is showing in like
- 3:23Speaker 1: a reversed order, So don't be mad at us. We
- 3:25Speaker 1: did actually put two out there, just in that weird order.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and thank you for putting me on the spot there.
- 3:30Speaker 2: You know I'm fucking horrible with names.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah, well you do it to me all the fucking time.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Sorry, So I guess I got what's coming to me. Yeah,
- 3:41Speaker 2: I did want to touch on something else though. We've
- 3:43Speaker 2: had a lot of questions over the last month or
- 3:46Speaker 2: so about if we're going to be making an appearance
- 3:49Speaker 2: at Crime Con in Las Vegas coming up this week. Unfortunately,
- 3:54Speaker 2: we are not going to be in attendance at Crime con. However,
- 3:59Speaker 2: we're thinking that we might see if we can maybe
- 4:01Speaker 2: make an appearance next year. We're not guaranteeing anything because
- 4:04Speaker 2: I mean, being up here in Canada and having to
- 4:06Speaker 2: make the trip all the way down to Las Vegas,
- 4:08Speaker 2: and especially with how COVID is playing out, who knows
- 4:11Speaker 2: what it's going to be like next year. But we'll see,
- 4:14Speaker 2: we'll see if maybe next year it could be the
- 4:15Speaker 2: year that will make ourselves a little bit of public
- 4:18Speaker 2: appearance there.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah, well I love Vegas. Super funny though went completely
- 4:23Speaker 1: over my head because I know there was like some comments,
- 4:25Speaker 1: oh like will we be hope to see you in Vegas,
- 4:27Speaker 1: and I was like cool, Like that's so cool. I
- 4:29Speaker 1: want asking him to Vegas. Like, I just had no
- 4:31Speaker 1: idea what that meant.
- 4:33Speaker 2: So you filled me in. Yeah, there we go. It's
- 4:36Speaker 2: the Crime Convention. Yeah, that would be sweet. We totally
- 4:39Speaker 2: want to go so it's just a matter of we
- 4:40Speaker 2: got to make it happen. So yeah, if you guys
- 4:43Speaker 2: are going to be a crime con, make sure you
- 4:44Speaker 2: guys take lots of pictures. Tell us all about your
- 4:47Speaker 2: experience down there, because we want to hear all about it.
- 4:49Speaker 2: We're going to be living vicariously through you guys, so
- 4:51Speaker 2: hit us up, let us know what happens. Yeah, it's
- 4:53Speaker 2: probably amazing. Yeah, oh, you didn't inform me and where
- 4:57Speaker 2: we are in a patron's list, that's your job we're
- 4:59Speaker 2: supposed to doing before this. Who was our last patron?
- 5:02Speaker 2: Who signed up last when we left off, Christina, Christina, Christina,
- 5:07Speaker 2: thank you once again for signing up for you get
- 5:09Speaker 2: double thanks. If you guys want to be on the
- 5:10Speaker 2: list from people we thank for patrons, you can go
- 5:13Speaker 2: ahead and sign up on Patreon for just like all
- 5:16Speaker 2: these awesome people who get behind the scenes. And of
- 5:18Speaker 2: course they get an extra podcast episode from us every month.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah, the last day of every month, so there's going
- 5:24Speaker 1: to be one here on Saturday.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, an exclusive episode you can only find there, So
- 5:29Speaker 2: sign up for that all access and you can go
- 5:31Speaker 2: ahead and get that. But we have had a few
- 5:34Speaker 2: more people sign up. So, starting with Michelle Miller, thank
- 5:37Speaker 2: you very much for signing up. We appreciate your support.
- 5:40Speaker 2: We got Tabitha, we have Ashley Laussen Laosing last names
- 5:46Speaker 2: get me every time. There's always someone with an obscurely
- 5:50Speaker 2: weird pronounced name or I'm just overthinking it.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I know, well, I think it's very obvious that we
- 5:56Speaker 1: are not the best at the name pronunciation around here.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Not so much. We try, and it's not like it's
- 6:01Speaker 2: obscure names by any means. It's just it's a little
- 6:04Speaker 2: bit different, you know, a little unique or something like that,
- 6:07Speaker 2: and it throws me for a little.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Well, if you've never seen a word before, how the
- 6:10Speaker 1: hell did you supposed to just know right away how
- 6:12Speaker 1: to pronounce it?
- 6:12Speaker 2: Fair Enough, every time I see someone's name and I
- 6:15Speaker 2: don't want to pronounce it, I'm always just like, secretly
- 6:17Speaker 2: in the back of my head I before eat except after,
- 6:20Speaker 2: and that's the only one I can remember, so it
- 6:22Speaker 2: never does need any good awesome, But after Ashley, we
- 6:25Speaker 2: also have Kenny Thompson. So thank you very much for
- 6:28Speaker 2: signing up for Patreon and giving us all that amazing support.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Y'all are awesome. Y'all are incredible and wicked.
- 6:34Speaker 1: So I appreciate it more than you could ever know.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Oh, an incredible amount. So thank you, thank you, and
- 6:40Speaker 2: thank you. What else we got is that it? I think?
- 6:45Speaker 2: So yeah, I think we can move into this this
- 6:48Speaker 2: epic case here. Well, maybe we should put on our
- 6:51Speaker 2: listening caps and buckle our seatbelts and get into this
- 6:54Speaker 2: crank case that you got prepared for us. I know,
- 6:56Speaker 2: I'm actually kind of excited here. All right, we'll hit
- 6:59Speaker 2: us up. Kind of story.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Rejuvenated my true crime juices by doing a I like,
- 7:05Speaker 1: a good one.
- 7:05Speaker 2: A good one, A good one. Maybe not being sick
- 7:08Speaker 2: helps too.
- 7:09Speaker 1: That's actually very true. Not that like other ones aren't
- 7:13Speaker 1: good and stuff, but it's just like the outcome is
- 7:14Speaker 1: kind of nice.
- 7:15Speaker 2: It's nice.
- 7:15Speaker 1: It's a nice feeling. Okay, so let's dive in here,
- 7:18Speaker 1: let's hear it. So it was September twenty ninth, nineteen
- 7:22Speaker 1: seventy eight, when fifteen year old Mary Vincent decided to
- 7:27Speaker 1: run away from home.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Wow, fifteen, Hey, I know, that's so little. That's so little.
- 7:32Speaker 2: That's like a child. It is a child. I was
- 7:34Speaker 2: literally obsessed with Pokemon at fifteen and dragon ball Z.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I'm thirty four and I'm still obsessed with those things. Yeah, all,
- 7:40Speaker 2: you haven't changed, Yeah, never mind? Oh okay.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And speaking of Las Vegas, she was living in Las
- 7:46Speaker 1: Vegas at the time with her parents, who it was reported,
- 7:49Speaker 1: were going through a messy divorce. Mary was one of
- 7:52Speaker 1: seven children, and I think she had just had enough.
- 7:56Speaker 1: She decided she needed some time away and would hitchhike
- 7:59Speaker 1: to calif Wow, brave. She made it some way to Berkeley, California.
- 8:05Speaker 1: But her final destination was Oh, I wrote that wrong here, Sorry,
- 8:11Speaker 1: I'm already like.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Wellna, I just want to say that. I was all
- 8:16Speaker 2: like thinking final destination like the movies as soon as
- 8:18Speaker 2: you said that, so that's where my brain went. Oh okay, Yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 2: her final destination was there boom done, Just kidding what
- 8:28Speaker 2: that didn't make any sense. First of all, I was
- 8:30Speaker 2: trying to buy you time to look up when you're
- 8:33Speaker 2: talking about and you just stared at me the whole time.
- 8:36Speaker 2: And two, you clearly haven't seen Final Destination because the
- 8:39Speaker 2: movie you feel like I have.
- 8:40Speaker 1: We are, okay, we need to stop with this. Every
- 8:43Speaker 1: podcast where I'm in trouble for shit.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I haven't watched it.
- 8:46Speaker 1: So anyway, her final freaking destination was Corona, California, where
- 8:51Speaker 1: her grandfather lived.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Oh, Corona, California. Corona. Oh, when you said Corona, I
- 8:56Speaker 2: thought you were just like blaming COVID for some for
- 8:58Speaker 2: you to forget.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, I'm pretty sure it how you pronounce Corona.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Now I should mention though a lot of reports have
- 9:04Speaker 1: different variances of those events, and I freaking hate that
- 9:07Speaker 1: one researching so some said she was leaving her grandfather's
- 9:11Speaker 1: home and on route back to Las Vegas, rather than
- 9:15Speaker 1: like her going to California. But either way, it's not
- 9:18Speaker 1: super important because it does not change the trajectory of
- 9:21Speaker 1: what is to happen. But I just thought I should
- 9:25Speaker 1: knowe that.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:26Speaker 1: So Mary was standing on the side of the road
- 9:28Speaker 1: waiting for someone to stop and offer her a ride,
- 9:32Speaker 1: which is when Lawrence Singleton comes into the picture. He
- 9:36Speaker 1: slowed down his van. One report showed it is a
- 9:40Speaker 1: white van with no windows in the back, so basically
- 9:45Speaker 1: like a pedophile van. Like nowadays, that would just make
- 9:49Speaker 1: you run for the hills, But I don't know if
- 9:51Speaker 1: it would in the seventies.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Like I was just about to say, of course he's
- 9:54Speaker 2: driving a van and it's probably white too. Yeah, and yeah,
- 9:58Speaker 2: of course, Okay.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I also think hitchhiking was way more of a thing
- 10:03Speaker 1: in the seventies. Yeah, it was, But cases like this,
- 10:07Speaker 1: which is a big old hint for you, is what's
- 10:11Speaker 1: made it not quite as a desirable mode of transportation nowadays.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Okay, okay, Oh God.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Don't hitchhike, please, for the love of God, whatever you do,
- 10:21Speaker 1: don't hitchhike. Yeah, you never know who that is today's lesson.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:25Speaker 1: So, Lawrence was described as having a kind smile and
- 10:28Speaker 1: presented a family man demeanor. He was a merchant seaman
- 10:33Speaker 1: by trade, recently divorced by his second wife, and had
- 10:37Speaker 1: a daughter around Mary's age, which he promptly shared with Mary.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I'm sure making her feel pretty comfortable, right, Like, oh
- 10:45Speaker 1: my goodness, this guy is like a father figure. He
- 10:48Speaker 1: has a daughter the same age as me. Like, he's
- 10:50Speaker 1: obviously good.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Yeah, building up a report, building up relationship, seeming relatable,
- 10:55Speaker 2: you know.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Yeah, he was apparently heading to Reno, said he'd change.
- 11:01Speaker 1: He'd happily, happily change, of course, to take her to
- 11:04Speaker 1: the direction she was wanting to go, which I don't
- 11:07Speaker 1: think is often how hitchhiking works.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that's suspicious.
- 11:12Speaker 1: A little bit on the suspicious side.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, I'll just go ahead and give you a drive.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I mean, I'm sure there's people out there who are
- 11:19Speaker 2: willing to do that, but I don't think you should
- 11:23Speaker 2: trust them. No, if someone's willing to go that far
- 11:25Speaker 2: out of your way just off on a whim. When
- 11:27Speaker 2: they just pick you up on the side of the road,
- 11:31Speaker 2: there's probably ulterior motives, whether it's to murder you or
- 11:38Speaker 2: just maybe they are just extremely hitting on you, But
- 11:40Speaker 2: there's ulterior motives.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I would say, so, yes, yeah, But Mary unfortunately accepted
- 11:47Speaker 1: this and got into the van with Lawrence.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Damn.
- 11:51Speaker 1: The ride started off fine. Mary was being taken in
- 11:54Speaker 1: the direction she was going she wanted to go, and
- 11:56Speaker 1: all seemed, well, this is really messed up. Though it
- 12:01Speaker 1: wasn't until she sneezed that the first red flag would
- 12:05Speaker 1: be raised. I mean, there's already been kind of some
- 12:07Speaker 1: red flags. Mary apparently lit a cigarette, sneezed, and Lawrence
- 12:12Speaker 1: reached over to feel her neck area, asking if she
- 12:16Speaker 1: was sick.
- 12:17Speaker 2: What the fuck like that's kind of fucked up? Yeah, no, kidding,
- 12:21Speaker 2: kind of.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Weird, but maybe kind of if he thought she was sick,
- 12:26Speaker 1: he wouldn't have offered to give her a ride, Like,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I understand that I don't want to stick motherfucker in
- 12:31Speaker 1: my vehicle, right.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yeah, But why would someone's instinct be to reach over
- 12:36Speaker 2: and grab your neck area when you're sick. Okay, Well,
- 12:40Speaker 2: I wouldn't grab the neck, but i'd be like, are
- 12:41Speaker 2: you sick? Are you sick? Neck area? You said neck? Yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 2: like just like felt her neck, Okay, because I'm like,
- 12:47Speaker 2: when you said neck area, I'm thinking like kind of collarbone,
- 12:50Speaker 2: which could be like strangling. Well, if you're going for neck,
- 12:54Speaker 2: I'm thinking strangling. If you're going lower towards collarbone and
- 12:57Speaker 2: towards chest, I'm thinking So when you said neck area,
- 13:01Speaker 2: I'm thinking between those two areas. Okay.
- 13:03Speaker 1: No, it was like neck, Okay, like feel I don't
- 13:06Speaker 1: know what exactly he was feeling for, Okay, if someone
- 13:09Speaker 1: was sick, I guess your neck could be swollen.
- 13:11Speaker 2: But that's a little bit weird. Okay. So it was
- 13:13Speaker 2: a little more like aggressive than like a sensual Yeah.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, No, it was not like sensual. I would
- 13:19Speaker 1: not I'm not what I gathered.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 13:22Speaker 1: So this alarmed her. And as she didn't like physical contact, like,
- 13:26Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think anyone will like that. But
- 13:28Speaker 1: soon she was able to relax again, and she decided
- 13:31Speaker 1: to take a nap. Oh, don't take a nap.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Taking a nap in the stranger's white creepy van after
- 13:40Speaker 2: he just made a grabty neck. Okay, let's just keep
- 13:44Speaker 2: it wrong.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I know, I feel like I would do anything h
- 13:46Speaker 1: to stay awake in that moment.
- 13:48Speaker 2: But sometimes when you're tired, you're tired. Yeah, But if
- 13:51Speaker 2: you guys are ever finding yourself in a situation, don't
- 13:53Speaker 2: take the nap. Don't nap, don't nap. You're probably gonna
- 13:56Speaker 2: want to open the door, tuck and roll, or eat
- 13:57Speaker 2: a snack. When I had you should everything eat, that is.
- 14:03Speaker 1: But when I have trouble, like staying awake, like watching
- 14:05Speaker 1: a movie, I just need a snack.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay.
- 14:07Speaker 1: So when she woke up from her nap, she would
- 14:12Speaker 1: realize they were not continuing on the route she was expecting.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Them to travel. Should have had that snack, Yes.
- 14:20Speaker 1: She should have had that snack. This would put her
- 14:23Speaker 1: on the edge. Scared and angry. She found a sharp
- 14:27Speaker 1: stick in the car and pointed it at Lawrence demanding
- 14:31Speaker 1: he turned the van around and take her where she
- 14:33Speaker 1: was wanting to go for fifteen years old, though, I
- 14:36Speaker 1: honestly feel like that's quite impressive.
- 14:38Speaker 2: No kidding, balls on her, that's impressive. Yeah, good on you, girl.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Lawrence apparently calmly apologized and reassured Mary it was just
- 14:47Speaker 1: an honest mistake.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Just an honest mistake. Okay.
- 14:52Speaker 1: She believed him, and the ride continued.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Well, Devil's advocate here, even though I know I'm wrong,
- 14:59Speaker 2: I'm just trying to understand her point of view. Someone
- 15:03Speaker 2: you just met hopping in the vehicle. Maybe he misunderstood
- 15:06Speaker 2: the direction that you want to go. Maybe he thought
- 15:08Speaker 2: you said something and not another thing. Depending on how
- 15:10Speaker 2: much they discussed it, he could have honestly just taken
- 15:13Speaker 2: a wrong turn as well. Yeah, exactly.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Maybe he didn't know where the fuck he was going.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Yeah, So I'm not saying it's unreasonable for her to
- 15:23Speaker 2: trust him again after he says it's an honest mistake,
- 15:25Speaker 2: because it's very plausible that if this was not a
- 15:29Speaker 2: serial killer true crime podcast case, it could have been
- 15:33Speaker 2: an honest missake. It could have been, Yes, but it
- 15:36Speaker 2: was another red fleck. Yes, right of course.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And if that hadn't put her on edge enough to
- 15:44Speaker 1: somehow like if only that had put her on edge
- 15:46Speaker 1: story enough to have removed her from that situation, like
- 15:49Speaker 1: I just wish. At one point, Lawrence stopped the man
- 15:53Speaker 1: to go to the bathroom, so Mary decided to take
- 15:56Speaker 1: this opportunity as well to stretch her legs. She was
- 16:00Speaker 1: outside outside of the van stretching her legs. She noticed
- 16:03Speaker 1: that her shoe was untied, so she leaned down to
- 16:07Speaker 1: tie it back up.
- 16:08Speaker 2: He's coming up behind her, isn't he.
- 16:09Speaker 1: As she was doing this, Lawrence snuck up behind her
- 16:13Speaker 1: and stuck struck her across the head with a hammer.
- 16:16Speaker 2: With a hammer with a hammerly escalated that.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Alone could have killed her really, like getting hit on
- 16:24Speaker 1: the back of your head could kill you quite easily, okay.
- 16:28Speaker 1: He then forced his penis into her mouth and told
- 16:35Speaker 1: her to perform oral sex or else she would die.
- 16:39Speaker 2: This fucking skis bag like it real escalates here? Wow, okay, wow.
- 16:46Speaker 1: From here, it doesn't get any better much worse. Actually,
- 16:51Speaker 1: Lawrence drags Mary to the back of the van, where
- 16:54Speaker 1: he rapes her, telling her not to scream or he'll
- 16:58Speaker 1: kill her. He was making it very clear that she
- 17:01Speaker 1: must obey him if she wanted to leave. After bounding
- 17:06Speaker 1: Mary's hands behind her, Lawrence drives her a while before
- 17:11Speaker 1: eventually stopping and cuts Mary free in his van. We're
- 17:16Speaker 1: not particularly sure what it was, but Lawrence had some
- 17:20Speaker 1: sort of unknown drink in a plastic jug, probably alcohol,
- 17:25Speaker 1: but who knows if there was some sort of drug
- 17:27Speaker 1: in there as well, right, he forced Mary to drink it.
- 17:32Speaker 1: The drink made Mary woozy and confused. Lawrence then rapes
- 17:39Speaker 1: her once again, repeatedly, actually fuck until she passes out. Wow,
- 17:46Speaker 1: like a disgusting piece of trash.
- 17:51Speaker 2: There are so many levels of absolute fucking I don't
- 17:56Speaker 2: even know how to explain it to this.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Honestly, Okay, like the fact that like he's disgusting, like
- 18:03Speaker 1: just so disgusting. But also the fact that he has
- 18:06Speaker 1: like a daughter the same age as Mary almost like
- 18:10Speaker 1: brings this up a level.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Well, that's what I was going through my head there,
- 18:13Speaker 2: because it's not only that he's like, oh, you know
- 18:18Speaker 2: she's young and playing off maybe like oh I didn't
- 18:21Speaker 2: know how young she was. No, they have that conversation
- 18:24Speaker 2: of my daughters around your age. So he went into
- 18:27Speaker 2: this targeting that specifically.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Which is just beyond disgusting.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Yes, and then after that he goes on to do
- 18:37Speaker 2: all this fucking horrific shit to her. Yep, wow, yeah, wow,
- 18:42Speaker 2: Like he's a real winner.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Like just you freaking wait, by the end of this,
- 18:45Speaker 1: you're gonna despise him.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Yeah. We're probably just scratching the surface, aren't we. Yep,
- 18:50Speaker 2: all right.
- 18:51Speaker 1: When she regained consciousness sometime later, the terror was not
- 18:56Speaker 1: even close to being over. She pleaded, like pleaded with
- 19:01Speaker 1: Lawrence to set her free. He ordered her to lie
- 19:05Speaker 1: on the edge of the road. I should mention too,
- 19:07Speaker 1: I haven't mentioned this yet, but at this point, like
- 19:09Speaker 1: she's buck naked, like completely naked, I assumed. He then
- 19:13Speaker 1: begins to say, you want to be free, I'll set
- 19:17Speaker 1: you free, and heads over to the van to grab something.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Oh shit.
- 19:22Speaker 1: He returns with an axe and proceeds to hold Mary
- 19:27Speaker 1: down as she struggles, and chops her right arm off.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Fuck.
- 19:34Speaker 1: He then moves on to her other arm and chops
- 19:38Speaker 1: it off right.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Below the elbow.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Holy shit, that's like it's even tough to say, Like
- 19:45Speaker 1: I can't even believe that someone would do that. Like
- 19:47Speaker 1: Mary is literally living a horror movie.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Right now. I'm like, I'm only a fraction of mind you,
- 19:54Speaker 2: but I'm feeling like those hits as we're speaking right now,
- 19:58Speaker 2: Like I'm not feeling the pain, but I'm like the
- 20:00Speaker 2: discomfort of like, wow, okay, I.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Mean it wasn't like it's an axe, like so he
- 20:06Speaker 1: was chopping, like it wasn't like one hit and like
- 20:10Speaker 1: it's off. Yeah, Like I honestly the pain that that
- 20:15Speaker 1: that that would be Oh, I just I.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Just can't holy shit. Okay wow. He then throws, could
- 20:22Speaker 2: have warned us heavy, it's heavy. It's heavy. Yeah, no kidding,
- 20:27Speaker 2: everything we cover is heavy. Yeah. Yeah, you're right. You
- 20:31Speaker 2: have a warning at the beginning. Do you need me
- 20:33Speaker 2: to repeat it for you? No, No, you're right. There
- 20:35Speaker 2: is definitely a warning at the beginning. But I was
- 20:37Speaker 2: not prepared. Okay, I got my big boy pants on.
- 20:40Speaker 2: We can do.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I don't think I shared really anything of this case
- 20:43Speaker 1: with you, So no, I didn't. Sorry, I should have
- 20:46Speaker 1: warned you.
- 20:47Speaker 2: It's good, It's all good.
- 20:49Speaker 1: He then throws Mary's naked and battered body down a
- 20:53Speaker 1: thirty foot embankment and stuffs are into a concrete pipe, saying, okay,
- 21:00Speaker 1: you're free. What leaving her there to die. I'm sure
- 21:06Speaker 1: in his mind there was zero chance that she would survive. Yeah,
- 21:11Speaker 1: what he had done to her.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Well, clearly. If there's anything that we just learned from
- 21:15Speaker 2: Alice and BOTHA, people can survive some incredible things. People
- 21:19Speaker 2: are amazing. Yeah. And if there's anything I've ever learned
- 21:23Speaker 2: from cinema is if someone leaves someone to die, there
- 21:27Speaker 2: is a chance they will not die. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah,
- 21:31Speaker 2: So we've had that conversation on any moment. Oh, if
- 21:34Speaker 2: they don't show the person actually dying, they're not dead,
- 21:37Speaker 2: I know. And you remind me of that so often
- 21:40Speaker 2: because I'm like no, and I'm like, they didn't show
- 21:42Speaker 2: the death dead.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Okay, So now being that this is a badass victim
- 21:48Speaker 1: survival case, I have said that clearly. I have a
- 21:51Speaker 1: quote I wanted to share from Mary herself.
- 21:53Speaker 2: She's clearly the badass.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Of the day, right, more than the badass of the day. Yeah,
- 21:59Speaker 1: like whoa. She says, he threw me off a cliff.
- 22:03Speaker 1: I should have broken bones, I should have bled to death.
- 22:07Speaker 1: I didn't, and I never passed out. I remember everything.
- 22:11Speaker 1: I wanted to give up and go to sleep, but
- 22:13Speaker 1: I felt someone there with me a presence who wanted
- 22:17Speaker 1: me to survive, a voice that told me get up
- 22:20Speaker 1: and get help or someone else would die.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Wow. So she's not doing this for herself, no, no,
- 22:28Speaker 2: holy shit.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Her her fight to survive was basically so this monster
- 22:33Speaker 1: wouldn't do this to someone else, which is incredible.
- 22:38Speaker 2: That is beyond incredible. Like you're at your lowest of
- 22:41Speaker 2: your low and your.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Mindset is to like save someone, save someone else, like wow, wow, shit.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like a fifteen year old girl. Yeah oh yeah.
- 22:52Speaker 1: And that's the other thing that's mind blowing is that
- 22:54Speaker 1: she was fifteen.
- 22:55Speaker 2: I can't believe she didn't even pass out. Yeah. Wow,
- 22:58Speaker 2: I stubbed my toe and I'm like, kill me please.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I know. This just makes me feel like sometimes I
- 23:05Speaker 1: should just never complain about anything.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Yeah, no kidding, but wow, Okay, continue.
- 23:10Speaker 1: So I should mention too that the area Mary ended
- 23:14Speaker 1: up being in was Dell Porta Canyon. Okay, So Mary
- 23:19Speaker 1: miss mustered the strength to stand up and walk herself
- 23:23Speaker 1: out of this situation. Wow, and she had Okay, get this,
- 23:28Speaker 1: she had some amazing survival skills because she ended up
- 23:33Speaker 1: shoving the ends of her arms into mud to suppress
- 23:38Speaker 1: the bleeding.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Holy shit. Yeah, Wow, that is some good fucking instincts.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Because I don't I don't think that I would thought
- 23:45Speaker 1: of that.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I don't think I would have thought of that either, Like,
- 23:48Speaker 2: I like, that's just wow. Wow. H I would have
- 23:51Speaker 2: been like I would have been trying to stop the bleeding,
- 23:53Speaker 2: but I don't think I would have ever thought.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Yeah, like you would have elevated, Yeah, but I don't
- 23:56Speaker 1: know if you would like because like I mean, she
- 23:59Speaker 1: would have had to been like submerging them. Like it's
- 24:02Speaker 1: not like she can use her freaking hand to coat it.
- 24:04Speaker 2: And shaitaking a raw stop and grinding it into blood yep.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Holy fuck? Is she like Superwoman? I know? Right? Wow.
- 24:17Speaker 1: She then followed the sounds of the nearby freeway, all
- 24:22Speaker 1: while she was raising her arms as well above her
- 24:24Speaker 1: head to keep the blading to a minimum. From the
- 24:28Speaker 1: concrete pipe to her rescue. It was said she walked
- 24:31Speaker 1: a total of three miles in the state that she
- 24:34Speaker 1: was in. Shit like that is an eternity and let
- 24:39Speaker 1: me refresh your memory. Because she had been hit on
- 24:42Speaker 1: the back of the head initially repeatedly raped basically over
- 24:46Speaker 1: the span of the night, forced to drink some sort
- 24:49Speaker 1: of alcohol substance and had her arms chopped off with
- 24:52Speaker 1: an axe. Wow, I mean, I don't know. I I
- 24:58Speaker 1: honestly like I sepo, I think would be like I'm done,
- 25:02Speaker 1: I'm out right.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Yeah. Wow.
- 25:07Speaker 1: So I believe like the presence of someone must have
- 25:09Speaker 1: been with her, like she said, because that is impressive.
- 25:12Speaker 2: That's superhuman, That's what that is.
- 25:15Speaker 1: The first people she came across on the freeway, unfortunately,
- 25:19Speaker 1: after getting a glimpse of her, sped away in fear.
- 25:22Speaker 2: What the fuck?
- 25:24Speaker 1: I mean? She would have been a sight. She was
- 25:26Speaker 1: completely nude, covered in blood and mud, not to mention
- 25:30Speaker 1: what the severed limbs would look like. She would have
- 25:34Speaker 1: been like a terrifying site. And she even later says
- 25:37Speaker 1: she doesn't blame them.
- 25:39Speaker 2: She would have been a terrifying site, for sure. I
- 25:42Speaker 2: understand that. But someone who literally has their arms lopped off,
- 25:48Speaker 2: what are they going to do?
- 25:49Speaker 1: I know she would not have been of any threat
- 25:52Speaker 1: threat that's the word. But like maybe like she like
- 25:56Speaker 1: didn't even look human, really like she would have looked
- 25:58Speaker 1: like she was from like a scary movie.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Still, I don't know. So that they rove around her,
- 26:05Speaker 2: I know, nuts ship there's a few parallels to their stories.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Yeah, then she came across a couple who was traveling
- 26:14Speaker 1: on vacation, and they did stop to help her. The
- 26:18Speaker 1: saints that they were wrapped her in linens from their
- 26:21Speaker 1: car and drove to a nearby airport where they could
- 26:25Speaker 1: call an ambulance for help. At that point, all the
- 26:28Speaker 1: strength Mary could muster was to keep saying that he
- 26:31Speaker 1: raped me repeatedly.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Fuck poor girl. Holy shit.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Once Mary got to the hospital, her bad assery continued,
- 26:41Speaker 1: and she immediately started working with the police to help
- 26:45Speaker 1: and find her attacker, even postponing her sleep and rest
- 26:50Speaker 1: to get shit done. Wow, they drew a sketch. So
- 26:54Speaker 1: the sketch that was drawn of Lawrence was so detailed
- 26:57Speaker 1: that once it was released to the media. Yeah, he
- 27:01Speaker 1: was immediately recognized and reported to the police, really immediately.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Do we know who recognized him and reported him?
- 27:09Speaker 1: Some like, there's a lot of things that were reports
- 27:12Speaker 1: say different stuff, but the main one said that it
- 27:15Speaker 1: was his neighbor who was also like a friend of his. Okay, shit,
- 27:21Speaker 1: so I meant, I mean, at that point I think
- 27:24Speaker 1: it'd be friends off.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Well, imagine being like, oh shit, that's my neighbor and friend.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Imagine the fucking horror going through your head. You report them, though,
- 27:34Speaker 2: wuldn't you? Oh? Fuck yeah, yeah, report them? But I
- 27:38Speaker 2: would be like, I've been friends with this person, I've
- 27:41Speaker 2: been close with this person. What could they have done
- 27:43Speaker 2: to me? This person has a fifteen year old daughter,
- 27:45Speaker 2: same age as what he just did. This fucking unbelievable
- 27:50Speaker 2: shit to this person. What has he done to this family? Like,
- 27:53Speaker 2: oh my god?
- 27:54Speaker 1: Yeah yeah. Lawrence was then tracked down and arrested. There
- 28:01Speaker 1: isn't a ton of information in regards to his trial.
- 28:05Speaker 1: He claimed that Mary was a ten dollars a night whorer,
- 28:09Speaker 1: so a sex worker, and didn't take any responsibility for
- 28:14Speaker 1: the crime he committed, which honestly isn't really surprising.
- 28:17Speaker 2: No, he just got even lower and I didn't think
- 28:20Speaker 2: that was possible.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Oh oh, just you fucking wait. He also claimed there
- 28:25Speaker 1: had been someone else in the car, taking more blame
- 28:28Speaker 1: off himself. Despite everything Mary had been through, she testified
- 28:34Speaker 1: in court against Lawrence. Prior to court, she had been
- 28:38Speaker 1: fitted with prosthetics, so in court she pointed one of
- 28:42Speaker 1: her hooked prosthetic arms at Lawrence indicated who her attacker was.
- 28:48Speaker 1: She never once referred to him by name, but always
- 28:52Speaker 1: only as my attacker, which I do like. She never
- 28:55Speaker 1: gave him the dignity of having a name. Really, it
- 28:59Speaker 1: was just attack her.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Well, he's not a person, and I.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Even like hate saying his name.
- 29:05Speaker 2: It's like she's literally taking the humanity away from him,
- 29:08Speaker 2: which fucking shows even more strength on her. Like holy shit, yeap, wow,
- 29:13Speaker 2: this girl is fucking awesome.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Holy shit, love, she's amazing. After testifying, Mary quickly left
- 29:21Speaker 1: the courtroom. As she was leaving, Lawrence very quietly mentioned
- 29:25Speaker 1: something to her. He later admitted that what he said
- 29:29Speaker 1: to her was I'll finish this job if it takes
- 29:33Speaker 1: me the rest of my life.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Holy fuck, fuck this guy.
- 29:39Speaker 1: I know, I know, like I it's unbelievable, Like it's
- 29:44Speaker 1: almost unbelievable here. Lawrence was convicted of multiple charges, including kidnapping,
- 29:51Speaker 1: tempted murder, and rape, and was sentenced to the maximum
- 29:56Speaker 1: sentence of fourteen years.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Why.
- 30:01Speaker 1: The judge remarked that if they had the power, would
- 30:04Speaker 1: have sent him away for his whole life for that years.
- 30:09Speaker 1: That was at the time the maximum sentence he could
- 30:12Speaker 1: have received.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Rely, shit, and you said, he admitted to saying that
- 30:16Speaker 2: he's going to finish the job.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Yeah, holy fuck, it gets worsted. Just keep listening here.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Oh Okay.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Mary had a tough time. I mean, the age of
- 30:28Speaker 1: around fifteen is hard enough without having gone through what
- 30:32Speaker 1: she did. Yeah, like, you're kind of just learning who
- 30:34Speaker 1: the fuck you are really. She had trouble with her family,
- 30:38Speaker 1: a tough time at school, and felt isolated and attended
- 30:42Speaker 1: therapy for years. As soon as Mary graduated, she moved
- 30:46Speaker 1: from her home, but she was always very secretive about
- 30:50Speaker 1: her life and location and had trouble leaving her house.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Rightfully, so, especially when in fourteen years, this fucking slima
- 30:59Speaker 2: was going to be there probably after you. Yeah, I'm
- 31:03Speaker 2: waiting for it and I know what's going to be coming.
- 31:06Speaker 1: She had a lot of fear towards Lawrence, which got
- 31:09Speaker 1: real fresh once again when he was released from prison
- 31:14Speaker 1: after serving eight years fuck of his fourteen year sentence.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Now this is going to be basically part two of
- 31:22Speaker 2: her fucking horror story, because now she has a killer
- 31:24Speaker 2: chasing her the fuck down right.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Not to them, no, no, fuck, not quite. He was
- 31:30Speaker 1: released early for good behavior, what like, I honestly don't
- 31:35Speaker 1: care if he was an angel in there, no kidding,
- 31:39Speaker 1: There is no way he should have been released early,
- 31:41Speaker 1: considering what he did and what he had said to
- 31:45Speaker 1: Marry in the court room.
- 31:46Speaker 2: You were like, I'm so angry, I honestly missed. How
- 31:50Speaker 2: long did he actually serve? Eight years? Eight years? Eight years?
- 31:54Speaker 2: Eight years? Fuck? And once he was released, guess what
- 31:59Speaker 2: he did? Went and fucking chased her down.
- 32:01Speaker 1: No, this is this is wild, he sued Mary. What okay,
- 32:08Speaker 1: I shouldn't be laughing at your freaking we need to
- 32:11Speaker 1: be recording your face here. He felt he was the
- 32:16Speaker 1: victim in the attack against Mary, and sued her for
- 32:21Speaker 1: forcible kidnap for the purpose of robbery. He claimed he
- 32:27Speaker 1: considered the alleged events and knew he was not guilty,
- 32:31Speaker 1: saying he remembered Mary threatening to accuse him of rape
- 32:36Speaker 1: and that she had held a stick to him. He
- 32:39Speaker 1: felt that was the reason he had become violent.
- 32:43Speaker 2: So therefore that gives him the right to chop off
- 32:46Speaker 2: both her arms, kick her down a fucking cliff, and
- 32:49Speaker 2: store her in a culvert. Even if even if what
- 32:54Speaker 2: he says is true, now he has gone from self
- 32:57Speaker 2: defense to fucking attempted murderer. It's as simple as that.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Like, honestly, that blew my mind that he literally had
- 33:09Speaker 1: the audacity to turn this around and think he's the victim.
- 33:13Speaker 2: We've talked about some fucking, absolutely aroundous people on this podcast,
- 33:17Speaker 2: Absolutely fucking disgusting. I honestly think this is the worst
- 33:21Speaker 2: fucking excuse for a human being who's I've ever even
- 33:24Speaker 2: learned about.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Oh just yeah, wait till you see him. He just
- 33:27Speaker 1: is disgusting. He's disgusting.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Holy fuck.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Thankfully the suit never gained traction and the courts dismissed it. Yeah,
- 33:36Speaker 1: like it needed to have been a laughing matter.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Really, Oh god.
- 33:40Speaker 1: There were many people upset about Lawrence's release. No one
- 33:44Speaker 1: wanted him living in their town. Angry crowds would protest. Yeah,
- 33:50Speaker 1: they made it so he wasn't welcome to rejoin society
- 33:54Speaker 1: for his one year parole, and he had to live
- 33:56Speaker 1: in a trailer on the grounds of the San Quentin
- 34:00Speaker 1: Prison until his parole ended. His own daughter wanted him
- 34:06Speaker 1: to remain in bars, which says a lot a lot.
- 34:10Speaker 1: She she spoke at length about the nature of her
- 34:14Speaker 1: father and what he was like as a dad. Upon
- 34:17Speaker 1: his release, she had fled and hid an asked law
- 34:21Speaker 1: enforcement if there was any way they could keep him
- 34:24Speaker 1: behind bars for longer. This is a quote from his daughter.
- 34:29Speaker 1: I asked California prison personnel what could be done to
- 34:32Speaker 1: keep him in longer, and I was told there was nothing.
- 34:36Speaker 1: They suggested I obtain a restraining order at the time
- 34:40Speaker 1: of his release. Sorry, but I mean this quite sarcastically.
- 34:45Speaker 1: I tell you he is a danger. I said that
- 34:48Speaker 1: before the first crime. I've changed my name multiple times
- 34:52Speaker 1: and in moving across state lines, and you all suggest
- 34:55Speaker 1: a piece of paper that will tell him exactly where
- 34:58Speaker 1: I am, what my name is, and not to come
- 35:01Speaker 1: within the three hundred feet of me.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Wow, she's got a very strong argument there. Yeah.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Yeah, And you might have noticed in that quote it
- 35:11Speaker 1: says first crime, yeah, indicating there may be more.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Well, we'll get to that in a minute. I first
- 35:20Speaker 1: wanted to mention that due to the outrage and the
- 35:23Speaker 1: support from Mary, California passed a new bill in nineteen
- 35:27Speaker 1: eighty seven. It was called the Singleton Bill, which prevents
- 35:30Speaker 1: the early release of offenders who have committed a crime
- 35:34Speaker 1: with torture when torture is used, and carries a twenty
- 35:38Speaker 1: five year to life sentence.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Good fucking right.
- 35:42Speaker 1: But like, I almost have trouble with that because, like,
- 35:45Speaker 1: my god, if you have a bill like named and
- 35:48Speaker 1: passed because of a crime that you committed, does that
- 35:51Speaker 1: not mean that maybe you can be kept in prison,
- 35:54Speaker 1: you would think. So.
- 35:57Speaker 2: The problem is with something like that is like he's
- 36:00Speaker 2: gone through court, he's already had his trial, that's his
- 36:04Speaker 2: fair trial. Just because a law has changed afterwards doesn't
- 36:07Speaker 2: mean you can go back.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Yeah, but if it's changed because of him and his
- 36:12Speaker 1: Actually I totally get you.
- 36:14Speaker 2: I agree with you. I'm just arguing for the sake
- 36:17Speaker 2: of laws, sake on logistics, you know what I mean.
- 36:20Speaker 1: I know I know exactly what you're doing about it.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Just it blows my mind. Yeah, it's bullshit, And if
- 36:25Speaker 1: only they did. After Lawrence finished his parole, he returned
- 36:31Speaker 1: to Florida, where he was from, and in nineteen ninety
- 36:35Speaker 1: he was convicted twice a theft in which he served
- 36:38Speaker 1: time for. But that was nothing compared to what he
- 36:42Speaker 1: did upon his release of those crimes.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Oh shit.
- 36:46Speaker 1: In the spring of nineteen ninety seven, Lawrence was reported
- 36:50Speaker 1: as seen assaulting a woman in his home in Sulfur
- 36:54Speaker 1: Springs when police responded. Lawrence was covered in blood and
- 37:00Speaker 1: they found Roxanne Haines dead inside fuck off.
- 37:06Speaker 2: She had been.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Stabbed multiple times. Roxanne was a sex worker, but more importantly,
- 37:11Speaker 1: a mother of three and the provider for her family.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Holy shit. So someone who's literally just trying to make
- 37:18Speaker 2: ends meet for their family and he just yeap. Holy shit.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Okay, I mean it honestly, like I have goosebumps right now,
- 37:26Speaker 1: but like it was inevitable that he would reoffend.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Yeah, no kidding, Please please tell me then he's permanently
- 37:33Speaker 2: behind Bars's time.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Mary traveled from California to Tampa on the state's dime
- 37:39Speaker 1: to testify against Lawrence once again and had to share
- 37:43Speaker 1: the details of her attack and the toll is taken
- 37:47Speaker 1: on her life over the years. She was not obligated
- 37:49Speaker 1: to do that, but she was, like, I'm doing that.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Lawrence was sentenced to death, but died in two thousand
- 37:57Speaker 1: and one at the age of seventy one from cancer
- 38:00Speaker 1: or seventy four, sorry, from cancer.
- 38:03Speaker 2: He's dead. Good, Yeah, he's dead. I don't like, don't
- 38:07Speaker 2: get me wrong. I don't want to sit here and
- 38:09Speaker 2: wish death upon anyone. However, he deserves to fucking rot.
- 38:15Speaker 2: He does not deserve to be in fucking society. He does.
- 38:19Speaker 2: He got what he deserved. Period.
- 38:22Speaker 1: Some people like, I mean, I get rehabilitation, I get it,
- 38:25Speaker 1: I get it. And some people can be rehabilitated, but
- 38:28Speaker 1: then there are a lot of people that fucking cannot.
- 38:31Speaker 2: No, they can't. And there's there's actual studies on some
- 38:33Speaker 2: people with with severe mental issues, on things like who
- 38:38Speaker 2: aren't legit psychopaths, And there's documents or sorry, there's documentaries documentaries.
- 38:45Speaker 2: What's documentation documentaries? It just sounded really weird when I
- 38:50Speaker 2: said anyways, there's films on people who are behind bars
- 38:54Speaker 2: who've committed murders again and again and again, and they're like, yeah,
- 38:58Speaker 2: don't let me out because I will fucking kill again.
- 39:02Speaker 1: That's so bad, because I mean, honestly, if anyone was
- 39:06Speaker 1: to have any empathy to anyone, it would be like.
- 39:09Speaker 2: A father.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Against a kid, a girl kid the same age as
- 39:15Speaker 1: his own. Like that just shows to me, like how
- 39:19Speaker 1: much of a monster he is.
- 39:20Speaker 2: In my opinion, there's clearly some sort of chemical imbalance
- 39:23Speaker 2: or disconnect somewhere within his brain, like you'd have to
- 39:28Speaker 2: to be able to commit something so horrendous like.
- 39:33Speaker 1: That, And honestly, Mary needed that death like she needed
- 39:37Speaker 1: him to die, because that gave her some sense of closure.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Yeah right, she needed that. Well, she'd be living for
- 39:44Speaker 2: the rest of her life looking over her shoulder.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Today, Mary is a mother of two boys. Her life
- 39:50Speaker 1: has began to change for the better, and she has
- 39:53Speaker 1: begun to heal and establish close relationships as her new
- 39:57Speaker 1: family became her life. Along with being a victim's advocate
- 40:02Speaker 1: in support of victims' rights, Mary is also an artist.
- 40:07Speaker 1: As she described it, she's entering what she thinks of
- 40:11Speaker 1: as her third face. First she was a victim, then
- 40:15Speaker 1: a survivor, and now she's an artist. Being that she
- 40:19Speaker 1: has no hands though this is like quite a feat right.
- 40:24Speaker 1: She's used spare parts from broken down electronics to modify
- 40:28Speaker 1: her prosthetics into custom designs that work for her and
- 40:32Speaker 1: work for what she wants to do, which is amazing awesome.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Her focus as an artist is to paint powerfully upbeat women.
- 40:41Speaker 1: She creates her own version of female action figures. She
- 40:46Speaker 1: also takes individual portraits for commission. She's happy to be
- 40:51Speaker 1: moved past the label cast on her. While Lawrence was
- 40:54Speaker 1: still alive, most people know her today because of who
- 40:57Speaker 1: she is, not because of what happened to her her
- 41:00Speaker 1: and assumed she was born the way she is.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Wow.
- 41:06Speaker 1: So that's the story of Mary Vincent.
- 41:08Speaker 2: So she's officially moved on from from her past. She's
- 41:12Speaker 2: an artist now, she's a mother now, and she's she's Mary.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, because I mean, there that is something terrible
- 41:25Speaker 1: that happened to her. And I don't even think anyone
- 41:27Speaker 1: would judge if like her life took a different turn.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Oh yeah, rightfully. So, I mean something like that that's
- 41:34Speaker 2: gonna wear a lot of people down, and she's not
- 41:36Speaker 2: even letting it hear down anymore. So, but like you say,
- 41:40Speaker 2: his death probably was a big relief off her shoulder.
- 41:44Speaker 2: That probably set her free.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean, honestly, like it would he would
- 41:48Speaker 1: have just done more. Like I honestly think that he
- 41:52Speaker 1: might have even done more, probably just hasn't never been found.
- 41:56Speaker 2: There is some irony in that actually, because she wanted
- 42:00Speaker 2: to be let free and he's like, well now you're
- 42:02Speaker 2: free when he tried to kill her, but she was
- 42:05Speaker 2: actually freed in his death. Yeah, there's some in that, actually,
- 42:09Speaker 2: there is.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Yeah, But honestly, like an incredible, superhuman and it just
- 42:18Speaker 1: makes you feel like wow, like if you put your
- 42:21Speaker 1: mind to something, you can do some powerful shit.
- 42:24Speaker 2: No kidding, so wow, good on her for surviving. Mary.
- 42:29Speaker 2: I'm really not expecting you to listen, but if you
- 42:32Speaker 2: ever listen to this, holy shit, good on you. You're
- 42:35Speaker 2: an inspiration, inspiration, incredibly strong, keep keep being you. Wow,
