Transcript
- 0:00Hey, this is Adelida from Magic Dirt and I'm kidding anyway. Awesome,
- 0:05So, yeah, you guys have just celebrated twenty five years of your album
- 0:09Young and Full of the Devil and decided to re release, which has the
- 0:12most beautiful vinyl color by the way, I've seen it, and I just
- 0:15went, oh, that is awesome. I love it. And you're in
- 0:18the midst of touring the album and it's a monster, So how is the
- 0:22tour going at the moment. Yeah, it is a bit of a monster,
- 0:26bib of a beast this record. Yeah, thanks for saying about the
- 0:30vinyl cart were really agonized about every single component of this release. So yeah,
- 0:39like I remember, yeah, looking through the cam organ so this nice
- 0:43translucent purple which kind of matches a bit of the color and the cover because
- 0:48it's quite a colorful looking record, Like the photos are really saturated and there's
- 0:54an artwork means a lot to us. We take great care with that sort
- 0:58of stuff. But yeah, the records, you know, great, Like
- 1:02we love this record. It's when Raoul first joined the band back in ninety
- 1:07ninety eight, so he was like our third guitarist and like our he's the
- 1:11one that stayed. And yeah, like we had a great time recording the
- 1:15album in the studio back in the late nineties. You know we were be
- 1:18young and you know, still evolving our songwriting and craft and just our studio
- 1:25time. We remember it very well. There was just one big party,
- 1:30like we were really partying a lot. But we worked really hard too,
- 1:34Like it was so much fun. And yeah, it's training glove years since
- 1:38it came out. It's on a double LP. It's like a high gloss
- 1:42finish on the artwork. It's great, great photos by a guy called Andy
- 1:48Mack, who's this really great photographer, and it's there's you know, there's
- 1:53a lot of attachment to the record from fans, and the songs are really
- 1:56huge, really heavy, and we're really loving playing the record. It's great
- 2:00to be great to be playing it to the fans. They're very excited.
- 2:05Yeah, yeah, that's awesome. I can't say. I got to see
- 2:07you guys play at Spring Loaded this year and just the energy, like you're
- 2:12absolute animals. I just I felt so excited watching you guys. Is that
- 2:16something that you typically expect to see from one of your shows and what people
- 2:20see on tour? Yeah, pretty much never animals. Yeah, all right,
- 2:27yeah, you know we love playing loud, love the roofs, you
- 2:30know, and just rocking out. You know, We've always been like that.
- 2:36And yeah, just the energy off the crowds awesome. And we love
- 2:39getting out on stage and just giving an arrow and the music really makes us,
- 2:45you know, sort of like really feel it and move around. And
- 2:47yeah, we just love it. So it's it's in our blood, you
- 2:51know. And yeah, the shows are pretty my energy. Yeah, thankfully
- 2:55we're still able to get the energy out now. Yeah, that was it's
- 3:00definitely still there. I was thoroughly impressed. I was like, holy shit,
- 3:04all right, just kicked it up and not so its space here,
- 3:09You're welcome. So it's setting the scene. It's spring of nineteen ninety seven.
- 3:14You've just walked into the recording studio and you see where you guys sitting
- 3:16there making this album. What advice would you give yourself or what would you
- 3:21say to yourself in that moment? Oh? Look, I think you know,
- 3:28it wouldn't change anything. I'd just say, do what are you're doing
- 3:30and have fun, just milk it and just get into it. And you
- 3:37know, just being in the moment you know, I think we were always
- 3:42you know, in the moment. Whenever we did anything, we didn't look
- 3:46back and we didn't think fault was it's about the future. We were just
- 3:52living fuggy in the moment. So we walked up to the studio. There
- 3:54was a pizza joint. No, it was a Turkish bread joint downstairs made
- 4:00the most amazing Like we'd get hot Turkish bed with like you know whatever on
- 4:04it that we all wanted and oh it was so and there's a bottle on
- 4:11its door as well. Get yeah, exactly, and least had the best
- 4:16time because like we were living in Melbourne for the first time when we were
- 4:20from the country, most of us, so living in the big smoke was
- 4:25cool and just discovering everything and being in your sort of men to late trainees
- 4:29and sort of being smack baby in the middle of this live music capital of
- 4:32Australia. You know, it was just an unreal time and we were we
- 4:39were just like maintaining it out with each other and we really we loved each
- 4:44other and still doing like a lot. So it was just the best scenario
- 4:48you could imagine, you know. So the advice would be there's probably no
- 4:54advice to give because we'd just be like to do your thing, and maybe
- 5:00I can give some advice from my youngest self and now saying thank you that
- 5:03you're worry about and being to be yourself, do what you want to do.
- 5:08Yeah, You're gonna re release this in twenty five years and people are
- 5:11still going to fucking love you. That's the hope. Yeah. Do you
- 5:18still resonate with the lyrics and the content to the album or do you sit
- 5:21back and listen to it together and go what was I saying? Well,
- 5:25what was I thinking in that moment? A bit of Bob guys. Definitely
- 5:30some of the lyrics about growing the sentiment as in I understand where it was
- 5:38coming from, whereas in them at the time, I was just very emotional
- 5:43and coming from a certain place. But now sort of, you know,
- 5:46in my early fifties, you know, mature and growing up a bit.
- 5:51So I feel like I'm looking back as a younger self and kind of,
- 5:57you know, it just it. You know, I get where I was
- 6:00coming from, and I totally it's totally valid. But I can like be
- 6:05the mother now, I can be that sort of nurturing ternally's sort of person
- 6:12that's sort of you know, just going, hey, this is cool then,
- 6:15so I feel I'm coming from it from a maturer perspective and holding space
- 6:19for it now, which is great. But suddenly lyrics I'm like, wow,
- 6:26I wouldn't have written that now they're pretty serial. I still write dark
- 6:30lyrics now. It's like, yeah, very a little bit different. It's
- 6:34from that space, but it's really good. Like I'm lovely playing the song.
- 6:39It's like, you know, because I can I'm older and wise,
- 6:44or I can take it on the board so much more. But it's really
- 6:47fun. I thought it. I didn't think it would be this fun,
- 6:51Like it's really it's actually really uplifting, even though it's very dark and heavy,
- 6:56but it's really fucking fun to place it would be. It would be
- 7:00so cool to have that as a tool reflection as well. It's like that's
- 7:03kind of like your heart and soul and your diary from that time. Then
- 7:06to be able to relive it all these years later through a different lens but
- 7:10you're still the same person. Like that's just got to be such an amazing
- 7:13thing. Yeah, it's it's good. It's unexpected in a way, you
- 7:17know, it's smoked really nice and yeah, you say, where you're going
- 7:20to grow alfable, what's going to happen? But here I am and it
- 7:24feels really good. It's like you just feels right, you know, Yeah,
- 7:28that's so cool. But mind me and my cat just jumped on my
- 7:30lap. So you guys are still very capable of pulling crowds these days.
- 7:38Im wi goodness? Sorry, no, so sorry. If that's known Eddie
- 7:46Eddie van Coombs after Eddie van Halen, Yeah, thinks he's pretty cool.
- 7:53I should have put him outside. I knew he was going to do this.
- 7:56Steals the show every time you guys have are you capable of like pulling
- 8:01crowds these days? At your gigs? Do you find that the crowd's kind
- 8:03of different to what it was in the nineties and naughties or is it much
- 8:07the same people just different shows. It's it's it feels like it's most of
- 8:15the same crowd. And we do know a few of the fans from way
- 8:20back who we've got, you know, we always see them and kind of
- 8:24become friends. So there's a lot of the people that we know in the
- 8:26same basis, which is awesome because I think we'd still be playing nouns.
- 8:31It's even awesome just to play and get a crowd. Yeah, but it's
- 8:37like it's pretty same crew, just old. We're like us. So when
- 8:41we would be out and then would ask, we're all just like relag going
- 8:45yea, it's been on a bit, you know, we've been through a
- 8:54fair bit in our lives. A lot of us, you know, but
- 9:00really young people to shows, like we get as certain as a certain continuous
- 9:07and they're in their early twenties, Like it's just you know, over the
- 9:11you know, because it's not under eighteens, but just as soon as eighteen
- 9:15eighteen they come to the show. So it's really awesome to see really a
- 9:18lot of younger faces and then new faces like the all different ages that the
- 9:24sprinkling they will come shows. I'm like, oh, I'm aout brand new
- 9:26fans. So yeah, we're still getting like brand new fans have never heard
- 9:31of us, and suddenly they're like, we've got these two guys. They're
- 9:33awesome, Pete and Craig, and they've just discovered the jive dirt and they're
- 9:39from Sunshine Coast and they've traveled to like so many shows of ours, like
- 9:46down to Victoria, Tasi, like New South Wales and they pop up nowhere
- 9:48there at the plant and they're awesome and they they yeah, so they only
- 9:52came on board like not that long ago. So we get screeny awesome fans.
- 9:58That's great, so cool. I love that. I'd live for that.
- 10:03But they are, Yeah, that's really cool. I love it.
- 10:09Oh so looking back over your career, you really did get that golden era
- 10:15of music in Australia, which is really cool. Like, what's a story
- 10:18that really stands back that you can share from back in the day? Oh,
- 10:24choir, so many story I'd love to pick your brain, but there's
- 10:31a caveat so many lost rain sales. This is very hard to recall.
- 10:37It's all this blur of wars. Yeah, being in the road like you
- 10:41know, well, yeah, being on the road a lot, traveling a
- 10:45lot, like the Golden Age was we were out on the road like most
- 10:48of the year, whereas it's different now it's a bit more strategic and not
- 10:56as hectic and just doing only festivals and then our shows. And it's just
- 11:03always blur of just the most amazing, incredible time to be alive and to
- 11:07be in a band with your mates trailing around. But you know, I
- 11:11think the classic I always go. I always go to the Big Day Out
- 11:16sort of memories, because it's pretty impressive, you know, a huge festival.
- 11:22You know, we met a lot of famous USOS artists, like Iggy
- 11:28Pop. You never meeting Iggy Pop. Briefly. He was sitting next to
- 11:33Texts Perkins, and I just went because I know text really well, and
- 11:37the text was like as and I came over, And as I came over,
- 11:41I was like, oh, fucking's Iggy Pops sitting right Texts like cool,
- 11:45like cool, like I think I just said hey Iggy, like do
- 11:50I call you egg? I don't know, while I said hey, lovely.
- 11:56And then one time backstage with Big Day Out, like we have these
- 12:00spar bars, like these big outdoors spars. H so you finish your show
- 12:05and you jump in the spars and I remember being in one with like grinspoons.
- 12:11You have a diametic dirt as a whole bunch of us made a ship
- 12:13you had. We were just sitting there and drinking whatever we were And then
- 12:18Joe Strummer from the Clash Walls class and ralgos Jo, how are you doing?
- 12:26And then Joe Strummer comes over and it just puts his elbow on the
- 12:28spar and goes, hey, guys, it's so nice. He was the
- 12:33nicest guys, dulous like that. Getting Shelley Man from Garbage and having a
- 12:39chat in her about here day Harvey, and it's like but it was more
- 12:41wow. It's kind of like you freak out because they are huge stars.
- 12:46But then when you it always happens. You meet them and they're so lovely
- 12:50and you just have a chat and you're like, hey, Sherley, you
- 12:52know, hey, hey, you know, just like what's the guy from
- 12:56the White Strub Snowe Jack White White? Yeah? You know. I remember
- 13:03once I met the lead sing of him cold Play, Chris Martin, and
- 13:07he was in a trailer and I got introduced to him and he was so
- 13:11nice. He's like, you know a lot of I don't want to say
- 13:16a lot of the stars because I just want to bother them, but I
- 13:20get introduced so much, you know, high and he was like, oh
- 13:24I had I had a chat with me. Yeah. So, and just
- 13:28a lot of funny shit like practical drugs we used to pull and you know,
- 13:31like Rizpuron at the Big Day out and round and our drama decided to
- 13:35go out completely naked. They would that would so not fly today, out
- 13:41there like that and it was funny. So it was great, So so
- 13:46many stories like have you got you know hours, really it was too good
- 13:54and it would just all blow into one and you're like, did that happen
- 13:56then all there or did that happen together? Yeah? Exactly, exactly.
- 14:01Yeah, so cool and just you know, lots of memory music, just
- 14:05hanging with fans, you know, some great off show parties and area shows
- 14:09and fans coming back to our poem and just some of the best parties you
- 14:15know. Yeah, yeah, that's so cool. Yeah. I couldn't even
- 14:18imagine, like you have just had a ball and there wasn't social media around,
- 14:22so you really could get away with some doing some shit. Oh my
- 14:26god. Yeah, like we shit, I'm so glad I went through the
- 14:31day of no phones, no social media. We used to drive around and
- 14:35guess where the venues were. We didn't even have Yeah, we didn't have
- 14:39maps, like, we didn't even have the street maps. We just guessed
- 14:41some you know, pre bats even we drew around. But it was so
- 14:46much more relaxed back then and yeah, we weren't living life rather than sort
- 14:50of you know, virtually a lot of the time. Yeah, yeah,
- 14:56yeah, but I think you know, we left no stone unturned in terms
- 15:00of doing what we love and giving it out all, like absolutely hundred thousand
- 15:05percent everything we have had personally, you know, privately, you know,
- 15:11and artistically you know, all our energy yep. And I can see you
- 15:16still do that to this day. So it's yeah, it's really cool.
- 15:18That's amazing we lived for Yeah. Do you indulge in year old like Channel
- 15:24Ving Recovery clips? I dived into them like last week. I had to
- 15:28look through them as soon as I got the email from you guys. I
- 15:31was like, oh, went back, had look. I was like,
- 15:33fuck, that's just so cool, isn't it. Do you sit there and
- 15:35go through someone N I don't know, but somehows I do when I have
- 15:41to do out for something. So I do come across that stuff. And
- 15:46I'm really proud when I see those things, like for sure, really grateful
- 15:50age and it's great to have those documents, especially Channel V we were really
- 15:54close with, like say, just really loved this, so then always is
- 15:58why list of things and we do their national toolers and things like that.
- 16:03So we do have a lot of goodish that they've got of us, which
- 16:07were really thankful for. Yeah, it looks really good, but yeah,
- 16:11I mean that was that was kind of smack bang in the middle of our
- 16:14major label time with so we looked really good. We had all clothes,
- 16:18we had a good haircrata. It was very glossy and it just but now,
- 16:22that's a really great time with that Channel B time that there was a
- 16:26real teak you know, real rold in age music team at Think and Channel
- 16:32B were a massive part of that. Are massive and that were such great
- 16:34people. Yeah, was like jabbered from Channel bab was a really good made
- 16:40and we used to do a lot of live interviews and things like that with
- 16:45him, and then of course Uni and Andrew Ye Fall crew. You know,
- 16:49so great, that's a great time. Yeah, but's so cool.
- 16:52It's so good to go back and look at it all. Just just even
- 16:56that the camera work everything, like it's just I don't know, it's such
- 16:59a time stay. Yeah, and then he's loved us. They'd be like,
- 17:03oh, we love you guys. Could you move around a lot?
- 17:06Like they love action shots? Yeah, We're like cool, that's what we
- 17:11do. Yeah. Do you have any Aussie bands that have caught your attention
- 17:15these days that you're kind of rooting for? Yeah, oh there's Yeah,
- 17:22there's a band called Loose Content from Byron. They're like a three peaks with
- 17:29a girl singer, bassed player and the guitarist is immaculate, the drummer is
- 17:33great, like Miller is the name of the girl. But yeah, it's
- 17:37Loose Content checker Man. Yeah, yeah, and I just love the folk.
- 17:47There's a folk duo in Melbourne. They're not heavy good so it might
- 17:51not suit this what he is, but they called the Charm of Finches.
- 17:56They're Manchu Pincher sisters. They're doing really big things at the moment. But
- 18:00there's a Sydney band also. Keith Hamlin who used to play Midget Get three
- 18:07piece really heavy band from Brisbane back in the day. Keith, the bass
- 18:11player from Bidget, is in a new band called No Cake. Okay,
- 18:15like like No Cake doing awesome stuff. They just started to come up down.
- 18:22They're releasing stuff and they're incredible. Grinding Eyes from Sydney or Gray Brisbane
- 18:30always churns out awesome music as well, Like and I like a bit of
- 18:34the Poppyer side of what's coming out of Brisbane, Like, oh, maybe
- 18:38we're not together anymore. I've got old brains that takes and they just rattled
- 18:45off five I'm depressed. There's also Kelly Lloyd from Scrapfeata Yeah, like screen
- 18:55food put out. I mean they're not new, but the Frisbee actually from
- 19:00spret London. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so they put out their record
- 19:04five Rings in the World, at which I love. And yeah, Kelly
- 19:08Lloyd does solar stuff. She's and miss but yeah, there's always good stuff
- 19:12pulling out open. I don't know what's in the water up there, but
- 19:17always something good. Yeah, that's why I've moved down here to get into
- 19:21it and immerse myself into it. It's not much going on in Cans,
- 19:22so it's yeah, it's been eye opening to say the least. Yeah,
- 19:27Cans it's its own little world up there, I'll tell you. Yeah,
- 19:33we've had to get up there. Actually we haven't got Cans on there too
- 19:37at the moment, but it is one place to go on now. We
- 19:38usually used to go up north yea, and thank you. I get up
- 19:41for Cans because we do get some requests from people out there. Then god,
- 19:45yeah, but yeah, don't go in summer, not the way you
- 19:48guys perform. It is hot. You know, I'm there, don't worry.
- 19:57Yeah, thank you. All right. So you guys have got Byron
- 20:03Bay coming up this coming weekend, so next week at the Northern and then
- 20:08you're heading up to Brisbane to play the second at the Zoo and then you're
- 20:11heading back down to the coast. So it's kind of chopping and changeing.
- 20:15Are you getting to do any of the nice coastal drives or you're doing flights
- 20:18all the way. We're driving some of the way. I make flyings,
- 20:22so I'm always putting my hand up to drive with you. Then it's the
- 20:26group. Yep. Yeah, there's a bit of flying and driving. Obviously
- 20:30we're not driving up to Brazzy in the Queensland. We'll get to drive to
- 20:36Byron will be nice and driving back there and we do a few little drivers
- 20:41as much as we can to see at the countryside and see the coast,
- 20:45so it will be nice. We're doing a long drive to Adelaide, so
- 20:48it was fun. It's pretty interesting terrain. Yeah, we're there. Really
- 20:52will be board to Byron because we haven't played there since the two thousands.
- 20:57Oh wow, like being over nearly Yeah, like definitely a decade since we've
- 21:03been there. And the well it used to be called the Great Northern but
- 21:07now it's called the Northern. Ye that was how that was our place.
- 21:11We've played there all the time. So I can't I cannot wait to get
- 21:14back there. Yeah, all of the stuff, get to stay upstairs,
- 21:19just play the gig and just run into bed perfect after a few drinks.
- 21:23You know, can't wait. And the Zoo is our spiritual home, like
- 21:30we pretty much they've always played the Zoo, you know, love it.
- 21:34We just cannot play like Queensland for me is one of my favorite places to
- 21:40play, especially Brizzy also that's good. Yeah there Zoo's a bloody good spot
- 21:45smack bang in the middle of everything as well. It's just yeah, it's
- 21:48a it's a great venue the first of time, yeah, I know.
- 21:52Yeah, it holds so many memories. And we've got our mate six foot
- 21:56here, who are kind of you know, doing a special gig support for
- 22:00us for this show because you know, they played much at the at the
- 22:04moment, so they're getting together for this and these contents are actually supporting us
- 22:10in Brisbane as well as Virons. Oh cool, so yeah said that's that's
- 22:15that's yeah, we love it. They're going to be great and also blushed
- 22:18just supporting us seen viron to all girl absolute that's awesome. I love that.
- 22:27So this is a silly one. I've obviously been watching you for quite
- 22:32a long time and I'm convinced that you're part vampire. I don't know if
- 22:36you age, and I need to know is there some secret that I need
- 22:38to know about or what is this? I just get I don't get it.
- 22:41Every time I say, I'm like, what that's very nice in you
- 22:48said I shortly. Don't worry. I think I've got a little bit left
- 22:55in the team. But I just got to the girl. But it can't
- 22:59be helped, and it's something that yeah, I don't know, like getting
- 23:03older and aging. It can be tough on the body and the mind.
- 23:08But I have to try and stay as positive as I can because it's all
- 23:12down hell from here, like there's no, there's no, it's not going
- 23:18to get any better like this is it. But you know, I'm interesting
- 23:22to see how things are going to go with how I look as I age
- 23:26and I do what I do because I can sometimes feel self conscious about you
- 23:33know, who looks and you know, everyone's God. But thanks for saying
- 23:37that. I would say it's a combination of maker good angle, but I
- 23:44don't. I don't some days I look, you know, like you know,
- 23:48we all have bandas. I reckon, you look bloody great if I
- 23:52can. If I get to your age and I'm still kicking and looking like
- 23:55that, I'll be happy. You're very fine. I love it all right.
- 24:02So I think that's pretty much all I've got. That people can jump
- 24:06onto magic dirt dot com to order a copy of your beautiful vinyl or CD,
- 24:10and you've got heaps of march on there as well, and grab some
- 24:12tickets and come see some of your shows. Yeah awesome. Oh it was
- 24:19so nice to me. Sure, I've been really looking forward to this.
- 24:22It's been awesome. YouTube qu alright,
