- 1:18Speaker 3: Hi, Hi Catherine, Good morning, Chelsea, Good morning.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Are you skiing right now?
- 1:25Speaker 2: I am in Aspen. Yes, we're skiing. There's yes, the
- 1:28Speaker 2: conditions are well, it's beautiful here, so it doesn't even matter.
- 1:31Speaker 2: There's no snow anywhere in this world, I don't think anymore.
- 1:34Speaker 1: But yes, I was hosting a gala, a gala, oh
- 1:38Speaker 1: children's oncology like COSF in Aspen, where they were honoring
- 1:43Speaker 1: Goldiehan my mother, my illegitimate mother, and so I was
- 1:47Speaker 1: the host, and so I brought some friends and we
- 1:50Speaker 1: skied yesterday and we're going to ski today.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Then I have shows this weekend in Springfield, Massachusetts, and Portland,
- 1:58Speaker 2: do Main and Rhode Island. Oh my gosh, sorry, does
- 2:03Speaker 2: Goldie know about your private Benjamin fiasco?
- 2:06Speaker 5: Oh?
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, she knows about it. And I did it.
- 2:09Speaker 1: My own monologue was about my private Benjamin fiasco where
- 2:11Speaker 1: I pretended to be a Goldie, where I pretended I
- 2:14Speaker 1: was playing Goldie Hawn's.
- 2:15Speaker 6: Daughter in the sequel to Private Benjamin.
- 2:18Speaker 2: But there was never a sequel to Private Benjamin. So
- 2:21Speaker 2: but I needed people in third grade to respect me,
- 2:23Speaker 2: do you know what I mean? Absolutely?
- 2:26Speaker 7: Absolutely.
- 2:27Speaker 3: I spent the weekend going to San Diego to see
- 2:31Speaker 3: my sister and nephew because he's looking at schools there.
- 2:33Speaker 3: And I decided instead of driving the two hours, to
- 2:36Speaker 3: take the train for four hours.
- 2:38Speaker 6: And how did that go?
- 2:40Speaker 3: It was actually wonderful because it's the Surfliner. It goes
- 2:43Speaker 3: along the coast. I got to watch the sunset. I
- 2:46Speaker 3: added a little whimsy to my life.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I was very excited.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Oh nice whimsy. I like whimsy for a train.
- 2:52Speaker 1: You know, I'm a jew, so trains and I I
- 2:54Speaker 1: have an allergic reaction to trains.
- 2:56Speaker 2: It's intergenerational trauma.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Yes, that's totally fair.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Anyway, we have a very funny guest today. He's one
- 3:02Speaker 1: of my old friends and you'll know him from Chelsea Lately.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Among other things, he's on Platonic, he's been on Hacks.
- 3:09Speaker 1: He's very very funny writer, comedian. I wanted to just
- 3:14Speaker 1: have a nice time with an old friend. Please welcome
- 3:17Speaker 1: Guy Brannam. Radlet's dishovel today, he looks like something happens.
- 3:22Speaker 4: We're trying a new hairstyle.
- 3:23Speaker 2: We're trying, Oh I see, I see.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm really blow outa tell me like it.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I told that's a cowboy too.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I was like, how I had this hair where I
- 3:34Speaker 1: had like bangs and I was like, and I was
- 3:35Speaker 1: like pushing his hair back.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I'm like, you're gorgeous. Why do you have your hair?
- 3:39Speaker 4: You're like twelve seven. I love that for.
- 3:43Speaker 2: You, cowboy boy.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Yeah, didn't even know that, possibly, but I forgot it.
- 3:48Speaker 2: If you need a thirty seven year old, I can't
- 3:50Speaker 2: go older now I'm fifty one.
- 3:51Speaker 7: You need some life, You need some life.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I know you need somebody else to keep you up
- 3:55Speaker 1: to speed on things.
- 3:56Speaker 7: Also, and I said this to you before, but I
- 3:58Speaker 7: honestly feel like, if I I were a woman, I
- 4:00Speaker 7: would not want to date anyone who was raised in
- 4:04Speaker 7: the gender reality that we were raised in. You know,
- 4:06Speaker 7: I would want somebody with like a mom who was
- 4:09Speaker 7: a little more politicized.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Ok, That's exactly how I feel, exactly. Because we were
- 4:14Speaker 1: just talking about this, yeah getting the update, with yeah
- 4:16Speaker 1: getting the iPhone update. There are men that are over fifty,
- 4:18Speaker 1: that have not gotten the iPhone update where they don't
- 4:21Speaker 1: understand gender, they don't understand racism, they haven't actually taken
- 4:24Speaker 1: any steps to like disabuse all of the knowledge that
- 4:27Speaker 1: they have been falsely fed.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yes, and they don't get it.
- 4:31Speaker 1: So like younger is better because anyone under I was
- 4:34Speaker 1: trying to say, we were talking to Giton Madrazo from
- 4:37Speaker 1: Stranger Things, so he's twenty three, so he's with it.
- 4:40Speaker 1: But like I was trying to include Cowboy because he's
- 4:43Speaker 1: under forty, but it's really under thirty. Yes, that people
- 4:48Speaker 1: get it unless you're a person of color, or gay
- 4:51Speaker 1: or a part of the LGBT community, you know, like
- 4:54Speaker 1: all of any of those things.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But it's really.
- 4:57Speaker 7: And we all need our updates. They really are Like
- 5:00Speaker 7: as I get older, realizing it's like, oh, I do
- 5:03Speaker 7: have to just think about should I be seeing this differently?
- 5:05Speaker 7: And there are some things where the children I am like,
- 5:08Speaker 7: you're being idiots about this, but I will respect it.
- 5:10Speaker 7: And there are other things where they're right and it's like, Okay,
- 5:13Speaker 7: it's time to get with the program.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Yeah, like you know the R word, Okay, I'm not
- 5:17Speaker 1: going to say it here. I don't think it's the
- 5:18Speaker 1: most offensive word, but it doesn't matter what if I
- 5:20Speaker 1: think it's the most offensive word.
- 5:21Speaker 2: It's offensive to people.
- 5:23Speaker 7: The hilarious thing is is that like at shitty open
- 5:26Speaker 7: mics now, the Little Boy comics are doing like a
- 5:30Speaker 7: six minute walk to get a hilarious excuse to say
- 5:33Speaker 7: the R word the way that they used to with
- 5:36Speaker 7: f slurs or like you know, the N word back
- 5:39Speaker 7: in the day. And it is just sort of like
- 5:41Speaker 7: it's like it feels like progress that their bad boy
- 5:45Speaker 7: activity is.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Something like that, right, right, And they think they're being
- 5:49Speaker 3: so original, but with our word like yaminika do you
- 5:53Speaker 3: know yamanica?
- 5:53Speaker 7: Of course?
- 5:54Speaker 2: So she opens for me a lot.
- 5:55Speaker 1: On the road, right, and she's crazy, you know this, right,
- 5:58Speaker 1: she's something's wrong with her, hilarious and crazy and I.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Can physically take her down. I just want to say,
- 6:05Speaker 2: I do it every night. I fucking tackle her for somebody.
- 6:08Speaker 1: The other night, we were in Cleveland and we were
- 6:09Speaker 1: walking out of the car. She was staying at an
- 6:11Speaker 1: Airbnb or a brothel, who knows, and she literally the
- 6:16Speaker 1: wind was so intense in Cleveland that she literally couldn't
- 6:21Speaker 1: balance her. She could not stabilize her body. This woman
- 6:24Speaker 1: is one hundred pounds more than I weigh. Okay, I had.
- 6:26Speaker 2: To get out of the car because I saw the
- 6:28Speaker 2: look of fear in her eyes. I was like, oh
- 6:30Speaker 2: my god, she doesn't think she can do it. Make
- 6:32Speaker 2: the walk. It was like fifty yards.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I get out of the car, I grab her, I
- 6:35Speaker 1: stabilize her on her ballast, and we get her to
- 6:38Speaker 1: the door and she's.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Like, oh my god, that wind is so scary. And
- 6:41Speaker 2: then she's like, how the fuck are you so strong?
- 6:43Speaker 2: And I'm like, I don't know.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Do you feel your abs because like that's the center
- 6:47Speaker 1: of gravity.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I mean, it makes no sense.
- 6:49Speaker 1: We were trying to figure out actually what happens when
- 6:53Speaker 1: the wind blows that hard and doesn't knock you over
- 6:55Speaker 1: versus when it does.
- 6:56Speaker 7: I mean, is this an argument for chair pilates. Should
- 6:59Speaker 7: more of be doing chairpul possibly?
- 7:01Speaker 2: Possibly?
- 7:02Speaker 1: Or or because like even when I ski and the
- 7:05Speaker 1: wind is crazy, people aren't getting knocked over. What like
- 7:10Speaker 1: mile per hour wind do you need to actually be
- 7:12Speaker 1: knocked over as a person who is one hundred and
- 7:14Speaker 1: thirty pounds.
- 7:15Speaker 7: I mean, he's very exciting when you have a wind
- 7:17Speaker 7: that really does make you feel like, uh oh, yeah,
- 7:22Speaker 7: getting tossed around by a wave I love. But yeah,
- 7:25Speaker 7: I mean I think it's all about core. But like
- 7:27Speaker 7: you're you're a big fan of like the core strength sport.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm a big fan of being strong, Like I
- 7:33Speaker 1: love being strong, because otherwise what am I going to do?
- 7:36Speaker 2: Just you know what I mean.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I can't have people like her and thinking they can
- 7:39Speaker 1: fucking beat me up or.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Pake you up.
- 7:42Speaker 7: You've been going out on the road with Yamanika, You've
- 7:44Speaker 7: been having Megan Gaily time, You've been having a lovely
- 7:47Speaker 7: community of ladies around you. Yea, who else have you
- 7:50Speaker 7: been going out on the road with?
- 7:51Speaker 1: Rachel Feinstein has been opening for me a little bit,
- 7:54Speaker 1: Amina Amani, do you know? I mean, she's really funny.
- 7:57Speaker 1: She's out of New York. I'm gonna I'm about to
- 7:59Speaker 1: announce a new boutch to date, so I'm gonna give
- 8:02Speaker 1: her some too, because I can't put all my Yaminika
- 8:05Speaker 1: and I. She slept with me twice this weekend. She
- 8:08Speaker 1: double booked her hotels. She's so fucking disorganized, So I
- 8:11Speaker 1: was like, you can sleep in my room.
- 8:13Speaker 2: And after this weekend, I literally couldn't.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I was like, I feel like I haven't slept in
- 8:17Speaker 1: thirty six hours, so I can't put all my eggs
- 8:21Speaker 1: in one basket with Yaminika.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Do you know what I mean?
- 8:23Speaker 7: I also love having someone to chit chat with in
- 8:25Speaker 7: the hotel.
- 8:25Speaker 6: I do, I do?
- 8:26Speaker 2: I mean, I'm a girl, you know what I mean?
- 8:28Speaker 2: I love it. I love it? So okay, Guy Brandham.
- 8:31Speaker 1: We used to work together on Chelsea Lately and Chelsea
- 8:33Speaker 1: Lately Days. We worked for how I don't know how
- 8:35Speaker 1: many years together. Three years okay, it feels like more, yes,
- 8:39Speaker 1: but okay. So, and then we saw each other a
- 8:42Speaker 1: few weeks ago. We went out to dinner a couple
- 8:44Speaker 1: of weeks ago. I was on my way to do
- 8:46Speaker 1: some set I think at the improv. Yeah, So it
- 8:48Speaker 1: was really nice to catch up. And I was like, oh,
- 8:50Speaker 1: I thought it would be great to have you on
- 8:51Speaker 1: the podcast so we could shoot some shit. Yes, like
- 8:53Speaker 1: old times and and fucking gossip.
- 8:56Speaker 4: I'm a big fan of yours.
- 8:56Speaker 2: So I was very that's very sweet.
- 8:58Speaker 7: That's very sweet, Like I have such warm feelings. It
- 9:03Speaker 7: really was like a family in all of the best
- 9:05Speaker 7: and worst ways. But the best parts were like getting
- 9:09Speaker 7: to gossip and really like getting to tear apart. You
- 9:13Speaker 7: know when Jamie Lene Spears got pregnant when we all watch.
- 9:17Speaker 8: How's That Going, by the way, well she apparently was
- 9:21Speaker 8: like a little bit complicit in the keeping Britney Spears,
- 9:24Speaker 8: like under the conservatorship, I think, but that, and then
- 9:28Speaker 8: when we watched the Lifetime hand Job Prostitute TV movie together,
- 9:32Speaker 8: like really one of the highlights of my life.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Remind remind me the Lifetime hand Job movie.
- 9:37Speaker 7: Yes, it was like one of the girls from Party
- 9:39Speaker 7: of Five, not Lacy Shabert, the.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Other one Nev Campbell.
- 9:43Speaker 7: No, maybe it was Lacy Shabert.
- 9:45Speaker 2: The point I think it was.
- 9:46Speaker 7: The point is is it was like prostitute who worked
- 9:49Speaker 7: only with hand jobs. And I remember Sybil Shepherd played
- 9:51Speaker 7: the mom and it was coming on and we would
- 9:53Speaker 7: have to watch these things. It's also really funny, like
- 9:55Speaker 7: the first time I watched RuPaul's Drag Race was for
- 9:58Speaker 7: Chelsea Lately because like there's a new show, Oh, we
- 10:00Speaker 7: have to win. We watched reality shows and stuff, and
- 10:03Speaker 7: like it's been on for like eighteen years now.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Have you ever been on RuPaul's Drag Race?
- 10:06Speaker 4: No, well you should be time for you to guess, Judge.
- 10:09Speaker 7: I am I'm not allowed to talk about that right now. Okay,
- 10:13Speaker 7: Well I am going to be in the drag Race
- 10:16Speaker 7: movie that's coming out. Oh nice, yeah later this spring.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Oh cool.
- 10:20Speaker 1: And you've been You've been on a bunch of TV
- 10:22Speaker 1: shows so Chelsea lately.
- 10:23Speaker 7: Yes, I've been on Platonic, I've been on Hacks.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Platonic is a great show, underrated. I love fucking Roseburn.
- 10:30Speaker 1: She's so awesome.
- 10:30Speaker 7: Well, it was such an exciting night for Rose last night.
- 10:33Speaker 7: I mean, she's like, she has a real rich, interesting career,
- 10:37Speaker 7: but that doesn't always end up in like a wardsy thing.
- 10:39Speaker 7: She does funny things as well, But that she got
- 10:42Speaker 7: such respect for if I had, like I kick you
- 10:44Speaker 7: and I was really hoping for but Jesse Buckley was
- 10:46Speaker 7: gonna win.
- 10:48Speaker 2: What about Michael B.
- 10:49Speaker 6: Jordan?
- 10:50Speaker 2: And first of all, I'm so fucking happy Michael B.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Jordan one. And I'm so happy that Timothy Shalamy did not.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Yes, now listen, And I know that this is a
- 10:57Speaker 1: sensitive topic because we're saying I had to look up
- 11:00Speaker 1: when the voting ended for the Oscars. I looked that
- 11:02Speaker 1: up to find out it started on February twenty sixth,
- 11:05Speaker 1: and it ended on March tenth, So his comments, Timothy
- 11:08Speaker 1: Shalome's comments about the ballet and Opera had an impact
- 11:11Speaker 1: for sure, because I.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Thought, oh, maybe they voted on this month ago. Michael B.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Jordan deserves this definitely, hands down period period. He or
- 11:19Speaker 1: Leo I think were the two best performances. And I
- 11:21Speaker 1: would say Michael B. Jordan because he deserves it.
- 11:24Speaker 7: I mean he played two roles.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I played two Yes, he played two people.
- 11:27Speaker 1: That movie was so huge and such a blockbuster and
- 11:30Speaker 1: got not like a modicum of the respect it deserves
- 11:34Speaker 1: from the industry because the industry is so fucking racist.
- 11:37Speaker 1: But by saying that Timothy Shallo may blew it, it's
- 11:40Speaker 1: kind of taking away.
- 11:41Speaker 2: From Michael B. Jordan's deserving of the award.
- 11:44Speaker 7: But I think it's also interesting the way that we
- 11:45Speaker 7: were all like, it's Timmy's year, he gets nominated all
- 11:48Speaker 7: the time, this will be the one that he wins for,
- 11:50Speaker 7: and then we were all like is it? And I
- 11:53Speaker 7: really feel as much as the comments, I think people
- 11:55Speaker 7: just being like a little bit annoyed with Marty Supreme.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yeah, because he was acting like Martin Supreme in his interviews,
- 12:01Speaker 1: But that's is that Marty Supremer, is that Timothy Shalomey
- 12:04Speaker 1: is the question, Like, just it's just too much like
- 12:07Speaker 1: watching someone and I think I got I did.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I said something after the Critics' Choice Awards. I was like,
- 12:12Speaker 2: it's just really hard to watch somebody pump themselves up
- 12:15Speaker 2: like this so much. I'm pumped their own movie.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I understand your campaign to win an Oscar. We all
- 12:19Speaker 1: understand how it works. You have to campaign, you have
- 12:21Speaker 1: to do interviews, But to go out there when you're
- 12:23Speaker 1: competing against Leo DiCaprio, who fucking deserves an Oscar for
- 12:26Speaker 1: every single thing he does, when you're decreating competing against
- 12:30Speaker 1: Michael B. Jordan, who people who are older than you
- 12:32Speaker 1: and have been doing at this a long time, like
- 12:34Speaker 1: there should be a level of deference or humility. Like
- 12:38Speaker 1: I remember the one interview where he which is the
- 12:40Speaker 1: interview I had commented on, and my PR team was like, oh,
- 12:44Speaker 1: you kind of went after Timothy's Chalomey for no reason.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, I know, but he's annoying.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Was like, I've been delivering A plus performances for the
- 12:53Speaker 1: last seven to eight years of my life, or the
- 12:55Speaker 1: last seven eight years, I've been giving you A plus performances.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It doesn't get any better than this.
- 13:00Speaker 2: This is it. This is like a level and you're like, Okay,
- 13:03Speaker 2: that's annoying.
- 13:04Speaker 7: Yes, I mean the thing is like he's still young, Like.
- 13:08Speaker 4: You know, he's got time, Delroy.
- 13:10Speaker 7: Lindo, he's been out there doing the work for like decades,
- 13:13Speaker 7: and was it was a little entitled. And there's also
- 13:16Speaker 7: the way that like his brand pivot I don't think helped.
- 13:19Speaker 7: I mean, dating the Jenner girl and all of that
- 13:23Speaker 7: does make you wonder and like he's supposed to be
- 13:25Speaker 7: our little artie boy. He's supposed to be our call
- 13:28Speaker 7: me by your name boy. And then saying the thing
- 13:30Speaker 7: about the opera and ballet was just like, what are
- 13:34Speaker 7: you doing lou Manhattan boy?
- 13:35Speaker 1: Don't you think that part of his rebranding is gonna
- 13:37Speaker 1: be without Kylie Jenner? Yeah, she's gonna I don't think
- 13:41Speaker 1: that's gonna be a one together for so long.
- 13:43Speaker 2: But now he has to rebrand. He has to.
- 13:45Speaker 1: He's probably devastated that he didn't win, you know what
- 13:49Speaker 1: I mean, he knows he blew it. But I also
- 13:52Speaker 1: am very sensitive to the fact that that is that,
- 13:55Speaker 1: you know, Michael B. Jordan, I do think he deserves
- 13:57Speaker 1: an Oscar. He was fucking great in that movie. And
- 13:59Speaker 1: I also think Hollywood has to be more conscientious and
- 14:04Speaker 1: responsible to people of color, Like it's ridiculous.
- 14:07Speaker 7: The other thing that was cool the race that award, yes,
- 14:09Speaker 7: is that thus far, all of the guys who have
- 14:12Speaker 7: won for like black men who have won for Best
- 14:14Speaker 7: Actor won after a long career, like people winning in
- 14:19Speaker 7: their forties, and like having somebody who like, look, he's
- 14:23Speaker 7: been around since all my children and you know, Friday
- 14:26Speaker 7: Night Lights, but like Michael B. Jordan, being somebody whose
- 14:29Speaker 7: best stuff is still ahead of him and having an
- 14:31Speaker 7: Academy award is exciting.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Okay, did you see that Nicole Kidman came out publicly
- 14:36Speaker 1: with Simon Baker that they're together.
- 14:38Speaker 2: They've announced the in a relationship.
- 14:40Speaker 7: Good for her, but also like, this is a good
- 14:42Speaker 7: move for Simon Baker because I don't think he's in
- 14:44Speaker 7: the Devil Wears product too, And it's a great way
- 14:47Speaker 7: of saying, how dare you not put me in the
- 14:48Speaker 7: Devil Worst product too? See in the first one, he
- 14:50Speaker 7: was he played the like I'm pretty sure yeah, he
- 14:53Speaker 7: played this. Yes, he played the nefarious guy who she
- 14:55Speaker 7: was and Hathaway was tented by. But then like good
- 15:00Speaker 7: for Nicole kid n I mean ever since.
- 15:02Speaker 1: I think they must have replaced Simon Baker with Kara
- 15:04Speaker 1: Swisher because Kara Swisher keeps talking about being being in
- 15:08Speaker 1: a scene of The Devil Wars Brada I'm pretty sure.
- 15:10Speaker 7: I mean she is rakishly handsome.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Yeah, she is, she is. I love Kara, I love Cara.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I listened to that podcast every week. Do you listen
- 15:17Speaker 1: to Pivot with Scott and Kara Galloway?
- 15:19Speaker 7: I only listened to it sometimes. I only listen to
- 15:21Speaker 7: it sometimes.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I let's get my world updates from that.
- 15:24Speaker 1: But that's so anyway, Nicole Kidman obviously broke up with
- 15:28Speaker 1: Keith Urban or whatever happened in that relationship.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Which totally he is a divorce That's what I wrote.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Well, it seems like he relapsed, didn't it.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know obviously, so I can't say
- 15:37Speaker 1: that he really opts, but it seemed like he did.
- 15:39Speaker 1: It seemed pretty drastic and like unexpected.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:42Speaker 7: I like Simon Baker for her. I think having an
- 15:45Speaker 7: actor who is not as famous as you as somebody
- 15:48Speaker 7: to like accompany you two things who you know looks
- 15:51Speaker 7: very nice is a good answer. I think, you know,
- 15:54Speaker 7: being half of a country couple was always a hat
- 15:58Speaker 7: she was gonna wear, not like life, she was going
- 16:00Speaker 7: to lead.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Oh interesting, I like that. Did you practice that on
- 16:04Speaker 2: your way?
- 16:06Speaker 6: I think?
- 16:06Speaker 2: Oh, but this is a little bit of a sidebar.
- 16:10Speaker 2: But why are country musicians so many of them Australian?
- 16:14Speaker 4: That's a really good question.
- 16:15Speaker 2: What is that the outback?
- 16:16Speaker 7: It is really interesting. But also last night at the
- 16:18Speaker 7: Oscars thinking about like how many The great thing about
- 16:21Speaker 7: award shows is it lets Australians and Irish people use
- 16:25Speaker 7: their real access the only time. But it's like the
- 16:28Speaker 7: sheer number of our A list actors who are Australian.
- 16:31Speaker 7: And it's like I get that because they're tall and strong,
- 16:34Speaker 7: because all of the sunshine and you know, rugby. But
- 16:37Speaker 7: I did like, and.
- 16:38Speaker 2: I guess a lot are tall and strong.
- 16:41Speaker 7: Rich criminal genetics. Yes, but the country thing is so
- 16:45Speaker 7: weird culturally that it is the other places that like
- 16:49Speaker 7: country music really means something and connects. It's kind of strange.
- 16:53Speaker 3: And it's like they're not being country stars over there
- 16:55Speaker 3: the countries.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Here is their.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Country music in Australia as I kind of. I mean,
- 16:59Speaker 2: that's what we have to get to the bottom up.
- 17:00Speaker 7: My concern is, like, you're not getting a direct Sydney
- 17:03Speaker 7: to Nashville. You know, that's a lot of having to connect.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Yeah, right right, Well, I would like to know what
- 17:09Speaker 1: happened with that relationship.
- 17:10Speaker 2: It's too bad.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I'm not going to my friend's fiftieth birthday because Nicole
- 17:12Speaker 1: would be there. Where are you at with Blake Lively
- 17:19Speaker 1: and the Justin Baldoni scanmbal?
- 17:21Speaker 2: I want to know your stance.
- 17:22Speaker 7: Okay, it's fascinating you have a situation where everyone's terrible,
- 17:27Speaker 7: like there is something. The thing that makes me mad
- 17:29Speaker 7: about it, though, is it ends with us? Is like
- 17:31Speaker 7: one of the show real successes in film in the
- 17:34Speaker 7: last couple of years.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Like Yes, which has been ruined.
- 17:36Speaker 7: We need this town to not collapse and they fucking
- 17:39Speaker 7: destroyed it. But it really does. Every time I get
- 17:41Speaker 7: a little bit of information about it. I went to
- 17:43Speaker 7: a dinner party. Do you know John Marcos Serici? What
- 17:47Speaker 7: John Marco.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Serici, John Marcos Serisi.
- 17:49Speaker 7: Yeah, he's a very funny comic.
- 17:50Speaker 2: You would enjoy it, Okay, I don't think I know,
- 17:52Speaker 2: I was.
- 17:52Speaker 7: At like a shabbat where the only thing that was
- 17:55Speaker 7: being broken down was the story, and I got so
- 17:58Speaker 7: much information. But like every time I something where I'm like,
- 18:01Speaker 7: maybe he's right, it's like, no, they are both terrible,
- 18:05Speaker 7: and it really sounds like she and Ryan have been
- 18:08Speaker 7: calculating and playing this very very hard.
- 18:12Speaker 2: I agree with you.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I something's wrong with the two of them, and they
- 18:15Speaker 1: are like it doesn't like especially, It's like it's like
- 18:20Speaker 1: when a damn breaks and you're like, finally, you just
- 18:24Speaker 1: don't have to look away. Yeah, there's nothing that can
- 18:26Speaker 1: be done, and you're like, we have too much information.
- 18:29Speaker 7: But also I think there's something that's very interesting in
- 18:32Speaker 7: la of like when somebody fights so hard for control
- 18:36Speaker 7: of a project that they end up wrecking the project.
- 18:39Speaker 7: And then this is the rare situation where the project
- 18:43Speaker 7: was successful, but they have ruined that success by making
- 18:47Speaker 7: it impossible to profit from it from anyway.
- 18:49Speaker 1: And what do you think is the Taylor swift of
- 18:51Speaker 1: it all with regard to the status of their friendship.
- 18:54Speaker 7: Oh, I mean, like I don't know, Like I think
- 18:59Speaker 7: that she is maybe our greatest politician, and I think
- 19:03Speaker 7: that like she does a lot of presenting her her
- 19:07Speaker 7: friendships and relationships to us. But also I think she
- 19:10Speaker 7: goes away from controversy.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Yeah, well she doesn't have to. She doesn't have time
- 19:14Speaker 1: for that shit either, you know. I mean when you
- 19:16Speaker 1: spend so much time working as hard as like you know,
- 19:20Speaker 1: like she does on her image and like her like
- 19:23Speaker 1: what she's presenting, it's kind of like what you're saying,
- 19:25Speaker 1: and like she's so thoughtful planning things like three and
- 19:28Speaker 1: five years out. She's like, I didn't have time for
- 19:30Speaker 1: this lawsuit, Like this is not on my calendar and
- 19:33Speaker 1: I'm not going to participate in it.
- 19:34Speaker 3: But yet I feel like she's still been a really
- 19:36Speaker 3: good friend to Blake, Like those text messages that were yeah.
- 19:39Speaker 2: They were all very public, very nice. Yes, good friend texts.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:43Speaker 7: But the thing, like the thing is with some of
- 19:45Speaker 7: these people who are like our industries, like Taylor Swift
- 19:48Speaker 7: is an industry, Like who are the women who were
- 19:51Speaker 7: in the Mean Girl Mom group? There was like, uh
- 19:54Speaker 7: was it?
- 19:55Speaker 1: Oh that was Hillary Duff yes and Moore yes?
- 20:01Speaker 7: And it is just like Mandy Moore, one of Hollywood's
- 20:04Speaker 7: great survivors. But like that, she still makes the time
- 20:07Speaker 7: to be Incidentally, cruel to people around her. I think
- 20:10Speaker 7: reflects a balanced life, you know. And I just don't
- 20:13Speaker 7: imagine that Taylor has the time for like messy girl talk,
- 20:18Speaker 7: for you know, ganging up on people the way that
- 20:21Speaker 7: she used to, Uh did she used to?
- 20:24Speaker 3: Oh yeah, the whole you stole my dancers and the
- 20:26Speaker 3: Katie Perry thing and all of that.
- 20:28Speaker 7: I mean, the fucking track that she wrote about Charlie
- 20:30Speaker 7: XCX on the most recent album I think is delicious
- 20:33Speaker 7: by the.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Way I do too. Yeah, that is actually a great time.
- 20:36Speaker 7: I mean, the thing is is like, but it's also
- 20:38Speaker 7: like it's pettiness that is going to in the long
- 20:40Speaker 7: term make her a great deal of money and like that,
- 20:43Speaker 7: Like that that woman is like put focusing her pettiness
- 20:47Speaker 7: towards her greater brand. I'm like, if only I could.
- 20:50Speaker 1: You know, Like, when people have complaints about Taylor Swift,
- 20:54Speaker 1: it's usually in the vein that she doesn't let out
- 20:56Speaker 1: of their artists breathe or have the success that she does.
- 21:00Speaker 2: How she re releases things.
- 21:01Speaker 1: And I don't quite understand all of this because I
- 21:03Speaker 1: don't really understand music. But how she like you know,
- 21:06Speaker 1: has sixteen or seventeen different album covers and then it's like, okay,
- 21:09Speaker 1: this is available for a limited release, right or somebody
- 21:13Speaker 1: will drop like a Billie Eilish will drop its song
- 21:15Speaker 1: and then she'll drop one right.
- 21:17Speaker 2: After, so that Billie Eilish doesn't stay at number one.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Those are things that I've heard. Is that out there
- 21:22Speaker 1: in the Zeitgeis that that happens well?
- 21:24Speaker 3: Definitely, the like publishing a ton of different covers, so
- 21:27Speaker 3: like the girls who love her have to go by
- 21:29Speaker 3: nine or you know, twenty five different covers.
- 21:30Speaker 7: It definitely as a thing a man has never been
- 21:33Speaker 7: criticized for trying to be killing you know, and it
- 21:35Speaker 7: is like I think that so much.
- 21:37Speaker 2: That always kind of comes back to that.
- 21:38Speaker 7: Yeah, like our resentment is somebody who's like doing it
- 21:42Speaker 7: too well, who is too in control. And there's a
- 21:44Speaker 7: way that like we demand this kind of like messiness
- 21:48Speaker 7: and vulnerability from women, like oh, there's a there's a
- 21:51Speaker 7: great line. There was this British art critic who said,
- 21:55Speaker 7: men act, women appear. The notion that like men get
- 21:58Speaker 7: to be agents, but women are always like Jackson, I
- 22:00Speaker 7: think is artists we so frequently It's like with Lena Dunham,
- 22:03Speaker 7: we couldn't understand that she was an artist who was
- 22:05Speaker 7: creating something and not just the mess that was Hannah Horvatz.
- 22:08Speaker 7: And I think that that is something that we have
- 22:11Speaker 7: a hard time understanding that, like, you are an artist,
- 22:15Speaker 7: not just a human being sharing the messiness of your life.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Fill me in on this Rebel Wilson story.
- 22:20Speaker 3: So what you were saying about how a project can
- 22:23Speaker 3: be ruined by all of this like behind the scenes stuff.
- 22:26Speaker 3: So Rebel Wilson got basically in a pissing match with
- 22:29Speaker 3: her producer of her new movie, which is called The
- 22:31Speaker 3: deb It's like an Australian movie.
- 22:34Speaker 4: It's a musical. It's supposed to be this like light,
- 22:37Speaker 4: frothy fun thing.
- 22:38Speaker 3: But they've been in a legal battle over a credit
- 22:40Speaker 3: that Rebel Wilson wanted on the movie and you know
- 22:45Speaker 3: she supposedly didn't earn it, and so they've been in
- 22:47Speaker 3: this legal battle for like two years.
- 22:49Speaker 4: And now like she's using okay allegedly.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Because it's a little blake Lively.
- 22:54Speaker 3: It is very much so the crisis pr firm that
- 22:57Speaker 3: supposedly she is using and her team are doing the
- 23:01Speaker 3: same sort of smear campaigns online and these like websites
- 23:06Speaker 3: saying that this producer who is a woman, was like
- 23:09Speaker 3: sexually harassing someone on the shoot and like asking her
- 23:13Speaker 3: to sleep with her. That person has gone on the
- 23:16Speaker 3: record and said that didn't happen.
- 23:18Speaker 4: That is not real.
- 23:19Speaker 3: But it's the same same PR firm that Justin Baldoni used.
- 23:23Speaker 3: So it's very lively Jessein Baldoni.
- 23:25Speaker 2: But from the other angle.
- 23:26Speaker 7: Yes, I mean the ways that our industry is getting
- 23:30Speaker 7: wrecked by some of these I think, particularly publicists being
- 23:33Speaker 7: too good at their jobs. I think you.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Opening up a crisis PR firm what so you can
- 23:38Speaker 1: just deal with fucking acrimony.
- 23:40Speaker 4: And hate and legate it and stir it up.
- 23:42Speaker 2: And fighting all the time.
- 23:44Speaker 1: It's like, oh my god, how many crisis PR firms
- 23:47Speaker 1: are there?
- 23:47Speaker 7: It does lead to the best possible moment in entertainment,
- 23:50Speaker 7: which is when somebody's a publicist fires them, like there
- 23:53Speaker 7: is just sort of like there's no clearer sign that like, oh,
- 23:56Speaker 7: they're just impossible to work with. But it's like, you're
- 23:59Speaker 7: rebel Wilson, let your movie come out, like you don't
- 24:03Speaker 7: need something to be happening.
- 24:05Speaker 1: But also, we just saw this whole fucking thing for
- 24:08Speaker 1: the last two Yearslake Lively and justin BELLDONI so if
- 24:12Speaker 1: you learn anything, don't, yes, exactly, don't. Nobody wants this,
- 24:16Speaker 1: Like if this is true, you know, to actively go
- 24:19Speaker 1: after somebody to like ruin their reputation, even if that
- 24:23Speaker 1: person is a fucking idiot, you know what I mean,
- 24:26Speaker 1: even if that person sucks.
- 24:28Speaker 2: What is the point of doing that?
- 24:30Speaker 6: Right?
- 24:30Speaker 3: And like we don't know it was Rebel specifically pushing
- 24:33Speaker 3: for this, but there was audio leaked of her team
- 24:35Speaker 3: discussing these tactics to use against this person.
- 24:39Speaker 5: Ooops.
- 24:40Speaker 7: I mean, like it's just rough and you really have
- 24:42Speaker 7: to question, like where are you putting your energy? You know,
- 24:45Speaker 7: like you're like you're Rebel Wilson, do like do something creative,
- 24:51Speaker 7: like don't waste your time just being in a fight.
- 24:54Speaker 4: She got married a Disneyland. There's nothing creative happening Disneyland.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Oh god, I wish they would shut that place down.
- 25:00Speaker 2: I know how many people love it, but honestly I do.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Love it, but I would not get married there.
- 25:04Speaker 7: I do love it. I do think anyone who purchases
- 25:07Speaker 7: like that much of a packaged wedding right without doing
- 25:10Speaker 7: it hilariously is you know? I question?
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yeah, right, what else is in the news.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Well, you were just talking about Wendy West.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Yeah, friend, So yeah, tell us about your friend. She
- 25:20Speaker 2: just published a book. What's it called.
- 25:22Speaker 7: It's called Adult Braces, and it's a really good book
- 25:24Speaker 7: and it's about her sort of like coming to like
- 25:27Speaker 7: a midlife existential crisis. Do you remember the show Shrill
- 25:29Speaker 7: on Hulu? It was based on her book and sort
- 25:32Speaker 7: of like the weirdness of having her life processed through
- 25:35Speaker 7: a TV show something you would know nothing about, and
- 25:39Speaker 7: then sort of like having like miscommunicated, no miscommunication, but
- 25:43Speaker 7: like bad communication with her husband, which she had agreed
- 25:47Speaker 7: to be like open but wanted to not know about
- 25:50Speaker 7: the stuff that he did there was open, and then
- 25:52Speaker 7: he got a girlfriend and she had like uncertainty and
- 25:56Speaker 7: a lot of like questioning of herself about that. So
- 25:58Speaker 7: she goes on a van trip down to the Florida
- 26:00Speaker 7: Keys and back to sort of like get her head straight.
- 26:03Speaker 7: And there's just been a lot of people and I
- 26:04Speaker 7: was there for her book launch, and a lot of
- 26:06Speaker 7: people have been expressing a lot of opinions about her
- 26:09Speaker 7: relationship without having read the book, and you know, it's
- 26:13Speaker 7: very frustrating for her.
- 26:14Speaker 1: And like what kind of opinions are they expressing that
- 26:16Speaker 1: are hurtful to her.
- 26:17Speaker 7: Like they were saying that, like that's not a good
- 26:20Speaker 7: way of going into polyamory. And they were just sort
- 26:22Speaker 7: of saying like, oh, this is sad for you. You
- 26:24Speaker 7: don't actually want this, And she's like, no, I love this,
- 26:27Speaker 7: I love Roy and my girlfriend, like this is a
- 26:29Speaker 7: better situation that is more wholesome and healthy for all
- 26:32Speaker 7: of us. That's the point of the book. And people
- 26:34Speaker 7: are like, you can't have that opinion.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Interesting, Yes, I wish there were a way for people
- 26:39Speaker 1: to not care about the feedback they get when they
- 26:42Speaker 1: put out a piece of creative work.
- 26:45Speaker 7: It's really hard, though. And the thing is is like
- 26:47Speaker 7: you read the comments because you want the people who
- 26:49Speaker 7: say that you're great, but then you see the stuff
- 26:51Speaker 7: where people are critical. It is really hard. I wish
- 26:55Speaker 7: I could be one of those people. And also I
- 26:57Speaker 7: think all the people who say that they don't care
- 26:59Speaker 7: are lying.
- 27:00Speaker 1: No, but there's a level of caring about it. Like
- 27:03Speaker 1: I understand that you have to care. It's what you
- 27:05Speaker 1: put out. Like if I put a book out and
- 27:07Speaker 1: it didn't do well or if it you know, I
- 27:09Speaker 1: would care. Yeah, but I don't know that I would
- 27:12Speaker 1: get like, just like when you see ten comments in
- 27:15Speaker 1: a row telling you you're the greatest thing in the world,
- 27:17Speaker 1: that gets old pretty quickly too, Like it's nice, but
- 27:21Speaker 1: you're not going.
- 27:21Speaker 2: To bathe in that, Like that's not real. It's real.
- 27:24Speaker 1: It's your impact, which is really important, like you know,
- 27:27Speaker 1: the kind of I think. I always use the term
- 27:29Speaker 1: domino effect you have on people, you know, to leave
- 27:31Speaker 1: people like, you know, feeling good and like to actually
- 27:34Speaker 1: have an impact on them as important.
- 27:36Speaker 2: But just like you don't sit there and.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Read these glowing reviews about yourself, Like I'm not going
- 27:41Speaker 1: to sit there and read bad things about myself on
- 27:43Speaker 1: and on and on and on and like it's not necessary.
- 27:45Speaker 7: Two things. The first one is just I've never really
- 27:47Speaker 7: gotten to say it to you. But the number of
- 27:49Speaker 7: times that I've been in some situation and somebody reflected
- 27:53Speaker 7: back to me that's seeing me and Ross on your show,
- 27:56Speaker 7: like help them figure it out coming out out of
- 28:00Speaker 7: the closet or who they were always is so great.
- 28:03Speaker 7: But my question for you is one of the things
- 28:05Speaker 7: that's interesting about the book is Lindy talking about sort
- 28:07Speaker 7: of like the specter of her first book shrill and
- 28:10Speaker 7: the way that it made people like expect things out
- 28:12Speaker 7: of her as a fat person and as a feminist.
- 28:14Speaker 7: And I just wonder for you after, like, what's the
- 28:18Speaker 7: first book called horizontal horizontal life? Was it hard for you?
- 28:22Speaker 7: Was it weird for you? Sort of like the persona?
- 28:25Speaker 7: But I guess it's it was a reflection of your
- 28:27Speaker 7: stand up persona, which is like you know you were
- 28:30Speaker 7: used to handling that. But was there anything with any
- 28:32Speaker 7: of your books? Has there been anything weird about the
- 28:35Speaker 7: way it made people see you?
- 28:37Speaker 9: No?
- 28:37Speaker 1: I mean sometimes people would be disappointed, Like when I
- 28:40Speaker 1: got like when I got very deep with like my book,
- 28:43Speaker 1: what was it called Life Will Be the Death of Me?
- 28:46Speaker 1: I got really deep about my brother and a lot
- 28:48Speaker 1: of people. And when I did a tour, I didn't
- 28:50Speaker 1: do a stand up tour. I did like a talking
- 28:51Speaker 1: about the book tour, And I think I was just
- 28:54Speaker 1: testing the water to see if I wanted to get
- 28:55Speaker 1: back at a stand up.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Because I had taken such a long break.
- 28:57Speaker 1: But people were like definitely like disappointed that that wasn't
- 29:00Speaker 1: like the old Chelsea, like the funny, funny like ribolts
- 29:03Speaker 1: and like all that stuff.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Which is so funny that you say that, because we
- 29:06Speaker 3: still get emails all the time that were like that
- 29:08Speaker 3: book did so much for me, That book changed my life, Like,
- 29:11Speaker 3: thank you so much for sharing that. So it's like
- 29:13Speaker 3: it is totally different strokes for different folks.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Absolutely, and and so and yeah, and as do I
- 29:18Speaker 1: and I love that.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I love that feedback.
- 29:21Speaker 1: But I also like even when I put that out
- 29:23Speaker 1: and people and I got some of that feedback like wait,
- 29:27Speaker 1: this isn't the Chelsea we know in love and I'm like, yeah,
- 29:29Speaker 1: it's moving, like I'm moving.
- 29:30Speaker 7: Well, yeah. The thing is you have to evolve as
- 29:32Speaker 7: an artist. And we've all seen people who got kind
- 29:34Speaker 7: of trapped by just doing the thing that worked over
- 29:37Speaker 7: and over and over again. And I think if you
- 29:40Speaker 7: want to be somebody who is alive and has something
- 29:43Speaker 7: to say, you have to evolve what you're doing.
- 29:45Speaker 1: And you have to be representative and real about what
- 29:47Speaker 1: you're going through as an artist. Not every artist has
- 29:50Speaker 1: to do this, like an actor doesn't necessarily have to
- 29:52Speaker 1: share all of that, but as a comedian or as
- 29:55Speaker 1: somebody who is playing myself, yeah I'm myself, you know
- 29:58Speaker 1: what I mean, it's it's insincere and disingenuous for me
- 30:02Speaker 1: to act one way and be going through it in
- 30:05Speaker 1: another way, like I'm not faking it. I am actually
- 30:07Speaker 1: on whatever you're lack of a better word, yeah, I'm getting
- 30:11Speaker 1: an upgrade a and for lack of a better word, journey,
- 30:14Speaker 1: Like you've.
- 30:14Speaker 7: Been pretty transparent with social media, pretty transparent with comedy always,
- 30:18Speaker 7: and I think that makes it easier to just sort
- 30:20Speaker 7: of like keep these things flowing along. And I think
- 30:23Speaker 7: for some people who are pretty famous understanding what level
- 30:27Speaker 7: of transparency you know, understanding I think also when you
- 30:31Speaker 7: have kids and it's like, you know, because like that
- 30:34Speaker 7: weird thing of like this is my life, but also
- 30:36Speaker 7: like I don't want people kidnapping them.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, the kids, I get. I don't
- 30:40Speaker 1: have to deal with that problem of another great decision
- 30:42Speaker 1: by me.
- 30:44Speaker 7: But there's a really good passage in the end of
- 30:46Speaker 7: Lindy's book that is basically like a book isn't the truth.
- 30:50Speaker 7: A book is sort of like your representation of where
- 30:53Speaker 7: you are, and also just sort of like the idea
- 30:56Speaker 7: of what I'm saying right now may not be true
- 30:58Speaker 7: of me always, but I'm not going to sacrifice the
- 31:01Speaker 7: happiness that I have now in service of being right
- 31:04Speaker 7: three years from now.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Yes.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Right also, And it's important to know that if I
- 31:07Speaker 1: said something in that moment, I meant it, you know
- 31:10Speaker 1: what I mean. Like somebody was like, oh, I thought
- 31:12Speaker 1: you hate flowers. I'm like, well I did when they
- 31:14Speaker 1: were when I did, I did hate flowers at a
- 31:17Speaker 1: certain point in my life. I thought that was kind
- 31:18Speaker 1: of just like not pedantic, but just like ooh, I
- 31:21Speaker 1: don't need flowers.
- 31:22Speaker 7: I love cut flowers. I love getting flowers.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Roses. I don't want it roses. I want flowers. You
- 31:28Speaker 2: know what I mean?
- 31:29Speaker 1: Flowers. I'm interested in that. How's your dating life, by
- 31:32Speaker 1: the way.
- 31:32Speaker 7: I mean, it's decentralized as always. I was in New
- 31:37Speaker 7: York and I saw a guy who I see in
- 31:40Speaker 7: New York, And before that, I went to Quebec in February.
- 31:44Speaker 7: Never a great.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Choice must have been for some dick.
- 31:47Speaker 7: Yes, so that that kind of thing. Do you like that? Yes?
- 31:53Speaker 7: Like the number of people out there like I'm a
- 31:58Speaker 7: very specific person. I used to have joke about this.
- 32:00Speaker 7: I am the sexual equivalence of a left handed oyster
- 32:02Speaker 7: shucking glove. I'm not for everyone, but those who need
- 32:05Speaker 7: it will appreciate it, and so I did have a
- 32:09Speaker 7: long term relationship twenty sixteen to twenty nineteen. I've been
- 32:12Speaker 7: doing a solo show where I talk about the complexities
- 32:15Speaker 7: of it because I'd never really been in a relationship before.
- 32:17Speaker 7: But like, that was interesting. I think meeting somebody who
- 32:22Speaker 7: was a right person for me made me much clearer
- 32:26Speaker 7: about who isn't a right person for me? If that
- 32:28Speaker 7: makes sense.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Totally makes sense.
- 32:30Speaker 1: And how did how was it being in a relationship
- 32:32Speaker 1: for three years after not having had a relationship.
- 32:34Speaker 7: It was weird and it was scary, and I didn't
- 32:36Speaker 7: really know how to deal with it, and I didn't
- 32:40Speaker 7: always make the best of choices.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Neither did he.
- 32:43Speaker 7: But I learned a lot from it. And I think
- 32:45Speaker 7: just if he, like he was smart in the right
- 32:49Speaker 7: ways and kind in the right ways in ways that
- 32:51Speaker 7: like helped me grow up and it was good. He's
- 32:55Speaker 7: still a very good friend of hers.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Oh that's good.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Yes, And do you think you want another relationship? I
- 33:00Speaker 1: know because I kind of like what you're talking about,
- 33:03Speaker 1: you know what I mean? And that's my vibe is
- 33:05Speaker 1: like bounce around lots of different people.
- 33:07Speaker 2: You know, I'm not in that situation. Right now.
- 33:09Speaker 7: But I like that well, And I think for me
- 33:12Speaker 7: as somebody who like started out in a very gay way,
- 33:14Speaker 7: just sort of like hooking up and stuff, understanding what
- 33:18Speaker 7: emotions are appropriate and like really like letting myself treasure
- 33:22Speaker 7: someone and enjoy someone is like I think, learning many
- 33:26Speaker 7: different definitions of the word love is really really useful
- 33:30Speaker 7: and good for me. But also like my job and
- 33:33Speaker 7: my creative process and the things that I do go
- 33:36Speaker 7: in so many directions that like there is something nice
- 33:39Speaker 7: about just like having a nice time with someone and
- 33:42Speaker 7: going off and doing my own thing.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Right, Because I was just saying to Catherine in our
- 33:47Speaker 1: last episode, I was saying, like I when I work,
- 33:49Speaker 1: I want to be alone. I don't want anyone in
- 33:51Speaker 1: my house. And when I come back and I'm in
- 33:52Speaker 1: LA or wherever I am when i'm working, I need
- 33:55Speaker 1: to be on my own thing because.
- 33:57Speaker 4: I don't like the check in texts. I'm guessing, yeah,
- 34:00Speaker 4: check in.
- 34:00Speaker 2: We don't have to talk to your phone every day.
- 34:02Speaker 1: I mean communicate, but you know, I mean sometimes on
- 34:05Speaker 1: the phone fine if you're in the mood, but like,
- 34:07Speaker 1: there's no I don't like to be restrictive or be
- 34:11Speaker 1: feel tethered.
- 34:12Speaker 2: I need my space.
- 34:13Speaker 7: Well, I mean, in reference to Lindy's book, a line
- 34:16Speaker 7: of mind that I have been repeating a lot is,
- 34:18Speaker 7: to me, sexual fidelity is the least interesting kind of fidelity, Like,
- 34:21Speaker 7: there are so many other things that I want to
- 34:23Speaker 7: know that I'm the first person that you tell about
- 34:27Speaker 7: a very good restaurant that you read too, Like I
- 34:30Speaker 7: don't care for you're fucking but like you know those
- 34:32Speaker 7: things that like really do matter that somebody share those
- 34:36Speaker 7: things with you, Like it is other things that matter
- 34:39Speaker 7: to me.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, I like that. Are we going to take callers?
- 34:42Speaker 3: Oh, we sure are, And actually I have some questions
- 34:45Speaker 3: that align very much with what.
- 34:46Speaker 4: We've been talking about.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Okay, we're going to take a break and we're going
- 34:48Speaker 2: to be right back with Guy Brenham that we're back.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Well, our one drink question that we'll start off with is,
- 34:57Speaker 3: Dear Chelsea, my ex and I broke up a year
- 34:59Speaker 3: ag but we've maintained a friendship. Shortly after the breakup,
- 35:02Speaker 3: I found out he was hanging out with a certain guy,
- 35:05Speaker 3: the one I was told not to worry about. I
- 35:07Speaker 3: did some digging and found a tweet from that guy
- 35:10Speaker 3: posted while we had been together that said something like,
- 35:12Speaker 3: why do I always fall for guys two hundred miles away?
- 35:15Speaker 4: My ex is an NYC. That guy lives in DC.
- 35:18Speaker 3: We were in an open relationship, so physical stuff wasn't
- 35:20Speaker 3: the issue, but I realized he was probably emotionally cheating
- 35:23Speaker 3: on me while we were still together. Now, even as
- 35:26Speaker 3: just friends, every interaction brings that betrayal back up. I've
- 35:29Speaker 3: thought about having a conversation with him about it, but
- 35:31Speaker 3: I'm worried it might be too much. Do you think
- 35:33Speaker 3: talking about it would bring clarity or just reopen old wounds?
- 35:36Speaker 7: Gabe, I think you kind of need to talk to
- 35:39Speaker 7: him about it, like in most situations, Like you know,
- 35:44Speaker 7: I don't think you should reopen old wounds all the time.
- 35:46Speaker 7: I don't think you need to get into everything. But
- 35:48Speaker 7: it's like, if you want to be friends with this guy,
- 35:51Speaker 7: you're this is going to fester and you're going to
- 35:53Speaker 7: get annoyed and it's going to turn into something bad
- 35:55Speaker 7: or inappropriate. And I think, like we're mature, sophisticated gay
- 35:59Speaker 7: guys who able to have an open relationship, and I
- 36:01Speaker 7: think being able to have a lunch where it's like, well,
- 36:04Speaker 7: tell me what was going on just so I can know,
- 36:07Speaker 7: will let you decide how much you want to be
- 36:09Speaker 7: friends with these guys and like hopefully open you up
- 36:13Speaker 7: so that you can like and appreciate them on their
- 36:15Speaker 7: own terms and maybe have a three way eventually love.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Well, that's a nice spin. But the other conversely, like,
- 36:21Speaker 2: what are the chances this guy's going to be honest
- 36:23Speaker 2: about what he was doing when they were in a relationship,
- 36:25Speaker 2: knowing that's just going to stir up shit, you know
- 36:27Speaker 2: what I'm saying, Like you're gonna ask my ex boyfriend
- 36:29Speaker 2: asked me if I was cheating on him, and I
- 36:31Speaker 2: was like, what's the advantage of being you know what
- 36:33Speaker 2: I mean, I'd be like, that's just going to hurt him.
- 36:35Speaker 2: I'm going to keep that to myself.
- 36:36Speaker 1: And you're probably gonna get lied to anyway, I mean,
- 36:38Speaker 1: not one hundred percent.
- 36:39Speaker 2: I don't know these people well, I.
- 36:41Speaker 7: Mean, and that is the dangerous possibility is if this
- 36:43Speaker 7: person lies to you, then you like have to resent them,
- 36:46Speaker 7: you know, But.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Also you may never know that they're lying, Like you
- 36:50Speaker 1: may not really know, maybe they were just flirting or
- 36:52Speaker 1: who knows. My take on all of this shit, as
- 36:55Speaker 1: I've gotten older has changed and evolved, which is it
- 36:58Speaker 1: doesn't fucking matter, not with.
- 37:00Speaker 2: The person anymore. Whatever happened while you were with them
- 37:03Speaker 2: doesn't fucking matter. You know what I mean.
- 37:05Speaker 1: You were dating, you were in an open relationship, all
- 37:07Speaker 1: the things are there. Now you're gonna be upset that
- 37:09Speaker 1: he was an emotional cheater instead of a physical cheater.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Like the relationship's over, move on.
- 37:14Speaker 7: Well, and there's also something that we said for like
- 37:16Speaker 7: give it some space, give it some space, go. And
- 37:19Speaker 7: I think it's really hard after the end of a
- 37:20Speaker 7: relationship to like to you want to be focused on that,
- 37:23Speaker 7: but like give it some space and then go back
- 37:26Speaker 7: and then you can be friends on whatever terms those
- 37:28Speaker 7: are two years from now.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Yes, that's also good idea to give it to me.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Did he say he wants to remain friends with him?
- 37:34Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, the ad.
- 37:35Speaker 1: But I think that we always want to like control
- 37:38Speaker 1: the situation, and the situation's over. You didn't control it,
- 37:41Speaker 1: it's over, And like the idea of controlling the outcome
- 37:44Speaker 1: of something is very like it's a false motivation. You're
- 37:47Speaker 1: never going to be able to control. Plus it already
- 37:50Speaker 1: fucking happened. So I would say, get you know all.
- 37:53Speaker 4: Right, you have two pieces of advice.
- 37:55Speaker 2: You know what you go ye, let us know what
- 37:56Speaker 2: you go with and how that goes? All right?
- 37:59Speaker 3: Well, our first color today, Leah, She says, Dear Chelsea,
- 38:02Speaker 3: I'm an actress and comedian in LA and I would
- 38:04Speaker 3: love your advice on my current situation. After fifteen years
- 38:07Speaker 3: of building an online audience of forty K followers, my
- 38:09Speaker 3: Instagram at leahk an hour was disabled after I made
- 38:12Speaker 3: an anti Trump joke that went viral and a massive
- 38:15Speaker 3: Trumpers reported it. I now have to start a new
- 38:18Speaker 3: account at leak an hour XO from zero. I'm heartbroken
- 38:22Speaker 3: and angry. So long freedom of speech. I guess As
- 38:25Speaker 3: an up and coming actress and comedian, my social media
- 38:28Speaker 3: is obviously vital for promoting shows and booking gigs. As
- 38:31Speaker 3: you know, I feel like everything I've built has crashed
- 38:33Speaker 3: and burned at my feet and my.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Career is over. What do I do?
- 38:37Speaker 3: Have you ever experienced a major loss, professional or personal
- 38:40Speaker 3: that ended up being a blessing. I'd really appreciate your
- 38:42Speaker 3: insight and encouragement.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Leah.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Oh, I can't believe that they could do that. Hi, Leah,
- 38:48Speaker 1: Look we have Guy Brandham here today. He's another comedian.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Hi guy, Hi Chelsea, Hi, how are you.
- 38:54Speaker 6: I'm okay, I'm happy to be here.
- 38:56Speaker 5: I wish it was in different circumstances, but I'm really
- 38:59Speaker 5: looking forward to your advice.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Well, first of.
- 39:02Speaker 1: All, everything that every disaster that happens or kind of like,
- 39:06Speaker 1: I don't know how you want of how you're framing this,
- 39:08Speaker 1: but it's definitely I don't understand how they are able
- 39:11Speaker 1: to take.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Accounts down like that. What do they? I don't understand
- 39:14Speaker 2: how that works.
- 39:15Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't either. It's pretty crazy.
- 39:18Speaker 5: No, but apparently this happens to a lot of people
- 39:20Speaker 5: for all kinds of different reasons and sometimes no reason
- 39:23Speaker 5: at all.
- 39:24Speaker 6: And I'm actually speculating they never.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Told me what guideline, so they just cancel your ee.
- 39:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I just woke up one day and my account
- 39:30Speaker 5: was gone. They didn't specify what guideline I broke or
- 39:33Speaker 5: what post it was. But I'm speculating because I had
- 39:37Speaker 5: a very viral anti Trump post, so I'm like, maybe
- 39:40Speaker 5: that was it, and I think a lot of people
- 39:42Speaker 5: reported it and then it just was down and I
- 39:45Speaker 5: feel I'm like, yeah, I'm mad at myself.
- 39:48Speaker 6: I feel like I ruined everything. Chelsea.
- 39:50Speaker 5: I'm actually on a show with you tomorrow, so I'm
- 39:52Speaker 5: very excited to meet you in what show at the
- 39:55Speaker 5: Ice House?
- 39:57Speaker 1: Okay, well, I'll see you at the ice House. That's great,
- 39:58Speaker 1: I am performing there. I forgot I'm doing.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Great.
- 40:01Speaker 1: But everything that doesn't work out, there's always some blessing.
- 40:04Speaker 1: You may not find out about it in the next
- 40:07Speaker 1: week or two weeks or six months, but you'll find
- 40:09Speaker 1: out about it at some reason.
- 40:10Speaker 2: You'll have had.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Some stalker that was going to try and come over
- 40:14Speaker 1: to your house and stalk you or kill you, or
- 40:16Speaker 1: something terrible that you avoided or averted by not having.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Your social media account. So let's just assume that's true.
- 40:22Speaker 1: Okay, not the worst case scenario true, but just some
- 40:25Speaker 1: scenario within that. Let's assume that something like that is true,
- 40:28Speaker 1: and this was a blessing in disguise. Rebuilding something is
- 40:31Speaker 1: not nearly as difficult as you think it is. It
- 40:33Speaker 1: feels like that in the moment, forty thousand followers, I
- 40:36Speaker 1: know is a lot of people, But you can rebuild
- 40:39Speaker 1: that in a second.
- 40:39Speaker 2: You don't need like. The thing that I'm more concerned
- 40:43Speaker 2: about is.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Like you're freedom of speech and to be able to
- 40:46Speaker 1: talk about this, like you know, you may had something
- 40:49Speaker 1: go viral where you were anti Trump. You shouldn't stop
- 40:51Speaker 1: talking about how much of an asshole Trump is. So
- 40:54Speaker 1: I'm more concerned about now than muzzling you. So where
- 40:57Speaker 1: do you stand on that front?
- 40:59Speaker 6: Yeah, it is. I do feel scared now to speak up.
- 41:03Speaker 5: And that's why I wanted to ask you because you're
- 41:05Speaker 5: very vocal about politics and I admire you both for that.
- 41:09Speaker 5: But yeah, and now I'm scared.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Well, then that worked, do you know what I mean?
- 41:14Speaker 2: Like it worked. That's what they wanted you to to be.
- 41:16Speaker 2: They want you to be scared.
- 41:18Speaker 1: You are scared, and you're probably going to edit your
- 41:20Speaker 1: behavior in the future. So first and foremost, I would
- 41:22Speaker 1: say not to do that. I think there's probably certain
- 41:25Speaker 1: people that they target right that they know that they
- 41:28Speaker 1: could get away with it because you have smaller followings
- 41:31Speaker 1: or I mean even the forty thousand peoples a lot
- 41:33Speaker 1: of people. But I really don't think it's like it's
- 41:36Speaker 1: not as big of a mountain to climb as you
- 41:38Speaker 1: think it is. You know, you can like increase your
- 41:40Speaker 1: social media presence in weeks, you know what I mean?
- 41:43Speaker 2: Like it's going to happen. You just have to start again.
- 41:45Speaker 1: And actually maybe it shifted and not necessarily away from
- 41:48Speaker 1: being anti Trump. Wait until you've amassed more followers than
- 41:51Speaker 1: forty thousand before you start talking out against him, maybe
- 41:55Speaker 1: because they're less likely to erase that. But I think
- 41:58Speaker 1: you should look at it as an opportunit unity, like
- 42:00Speaker 1: now you have an opportunity to create something brand new,
- 42:03Speaker 1: instead of looking at it as a loss. When we
- 42:05Speaker 1: look at everything that we don't get as a loss,
- 42:08Speaker 1: it kind of alters your state of mind and the
- 42:10Speaker 1: framework within which you look at focus in something.
- 42:13Speaker 2: And I think really successful people have.
- 42:15Speaker 1: An ability to like, oh, you almost not that you're
- 42:20Speaker 1: welcoming this, because it's not something that you would welcome.
- 42:22Speaker 2: But it's almost like, oh, what a fun challenge.
- 42:25Speaker 1: I get to rebuild my forty thousand people, and you
- 42:27Speaker 1: guess what you're gonna double that.
- 42:28Speaker 2: You're going to be way more successful.
- 42:30Speaker 1: But just figure out how you want to change that
- 42:33Speaker 1: in the right way, you know what I mean, Make
- 42:36Speaker 1: some slight alteration, not towards being political, but make an
- 42:39Speaker 1: alteration about like how you see your future as a performer, right,
- 42:43Speaker 1: Like if you're talented then there's not much that's going
- 42:46Speaker 1: to get in your way.
- 42:47Speaker 3: And I also think that like talking about your story,
- 42:50Speaker 3: like I got banned from Instagram for saying something about Trump,
- 42:53Speaker 3: Like talking about that on TikTok, I think would go viral.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Also, yeah, tell your story, Yeah you can.
- 42:58Speaker 1: I mean that could be your opening video, Like Okay,
- 43:00Speaker 1: I was banned, so I'm rebuilding my social media and
- 43:04Speaker 1: then talk about other things so it's not totally centered
- 43:06Speaker 1: on around Trump, you know, but that story is worthwhile
- 43:09Speaker 1: because I'm sure there's millions of other people that are
- 43:11Speaker 1: experiencing the same stuff. Yeah, you know, and like maybe
- 43:14Speaker 1: there's something you good you can do together to make
- 43:17Speaker 1: sure that they're not allowed to do that to people.
- 43:19Speaker 1: You can't just take someone's count down. I don't understand
- 43:21Speaker 1: how that happens. So but I really just don't want
- 43:24Speaker 1: you to focus on the loss and focus on like
- 43:26Speaker 1: the actual creative process of starting anew You know, it's
- 43:30Speaker 1: not the end of the world.
- 43:31Speaker 2: I promise you, it's not the end of the world.
- 43:33Speaker 1: You can act like you've never been on social media
- 43:35Speaker 1: before and be like how do I how do I
- 43:37Speaker 1: work this thing? You could have a whole angle about it, guy,
- 43:40Speaker 1: what do you think.
- 43:41Speaker 7: I think comedians can lose too much energy when you
- 43:44Speaker 7: have bumps and bad things happen. I think that comedians
- 43:48Speaker 7: have so much opportunity with social media to control and
- 43:52Speaker 7: be able to like communicate with people directly, but also
- 43:54Speaker 7: we forget how much it is being filtered through these
- 43:56Speaker 7: corporations that like really have infinite power to decide. You know,
- 44:01Speaker 7: it's weird when you realize all of the speech restrictions
- 44:04Speaker 7: that we accept on TikTok. You know that like we
- 44:08Speaker 7: just sort of take them, and so you have to
- 44:10Speaker 7: take those two things hand in hand. But I think
- 44:12Speaker 7: what Chelsea is saying is is right. It will be
- 44:15Speaker 7: a whole lot easier to get another forty thousand back.
- 44:18Speaker 7: And I think one of the important things is, like,
- 44:20Speaker 7: as comedians, the most important thing that we have is
- 44:23Speaker 7: inside of you, skills that you have built, what you
- 44:26Speaker 7: have learned on this path to forty thousands. They can't
- 44:29Speaker 7: take that away from you.
- 44:31Speaker 6: Thank you so much.
- 44:32Speaker 5: I really it's very helpful to hear all of that
- 44:35Speaker 5: from both of you, So thank you.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Yeah, So just keep on trucking, okay, because you know
- 44:39Speaker 1: you're going to have to like survive much more than
- 44:41Speaker 1: this in the world of entertainment and in the world
- 44:44Speaker 1: of rejection or what you perceive to be failures.
- 44:47Speaker 2: But I really think the.
- 44:47Speaker 1: True sign of like a real powerful person is never
- 44:51Speaker 1: to look at failure as failure. It's like, great, I'm
- 44:53Speaker 1: glad I got that out of the way. Now on
- 44:54Speaker 1: one step closer to my next success.
- 44:56Speaker 4: Thank you all right, Lea, will you keep us posted
- 44:58Speaker 4: on what happens.
- 44:59Speaker 2: And I'll see you at the ice house.
- 45:01Speaker 6: I'll see you tomorrow.
- 45:02Speaker 2: I'll see you tomorrow.
- 45:04Speaker 3: Okay, thankfully, Bye bye bye. So our next question comes
- 45:08Speaker 3: from Stephen. Stephen says Chelsea, I love you, love the pod.
- 45:13Speaker 4: You're the best. Would love some advice. I'm a forty eight.
- 45:15Speaker 3: Year old gay dude who's never been in a relationship.
- 45:18Speaker 3: I grew up in New England and being out in
- 45:19Speaker 3: the nineties wasn't a thing yet. It was too unsafe
- 45:21Speaker 3: to date the boys, and I had no interest in
- 45:23Speaker 3: dating the girls in college. It just never seemed to happen.
- 45:26Speaker 3: I'm the happy, fat friend that everyone wants to be
- 45:28Speaker 3: friends with but not date. I look at someone like
- 45:30Speaker 3: Ross Matthews, who is dating Salvador for years when he
- 45:33Speaker 3: was heavier. He's now in a loving marriage with Wellington.
- 45:35Speaker 3: I see fat guys out there all the time who
- 45:37Speaker 3: have boyfriends. How am I so unlucky that it doesn't
- 45:39Speaker 3: happen to me? Everyone always says it will happen when
- 45:42Speaker 3: you least expect it. Well, I've been waiting for over
- 45:44Speaker 3: twenty five years now and it hasn't happened.
- 45:46Speaker 2: Yet because you're expecting it.
- 45:48Speaker 3: I see people on my six hundred pound life and
- 45:50Speaker 3: they're all in relationships, and I get so mad because
- 45:53Speaker 3: they're fat and they found someone. So if wade is
- 45:55Speaker 3: not an issue for them to find someone, what's so
- 45:57Speaker 3: wrong with me that I can't I firmly believe that
- 45:59Speaker 3: I won't find a man to day until i'm thin,
- 46:01Speaker 3: but that doesn't seem to be true for others. As
- 46:04Speaker 3: I'm knocking on the door of fifty, I just want
- 46:06Speaker 3: it to happen at least once in my life. I
- 46:08Speaker 3: want to know what it's like to be loved by
- 46:09Speaker 3: another person, not just my family and amazing friends. Never
- 46:12Speaker 3: having experienced romance before just drives me into a depth
- 46:15Speaker 3: of pain that is real and can last for days.
- 46:18Speaker 4: Feeling like damaged goods that no one wants.
- 46:20Speaker 3: There are chubby chasers out there who find me attractive,
- 46:23Speaker 3: but being fond attractive for the one thing that you
- 46:24Speaker 3: hate about yourself as a total mind fuck? How do
- 46:27Speaker 3: I break the fucking cycle and put myself out there more?
- 46:29Speaker 1: Stephen, how do you feel about chubby chasers? I feel
- 46:33Speaker 1: like is that a bad thing? I mean like it
- 46:36Speaker 1: can feel weird to be a fetish. It can feel
- 46:38Speaker 1: strange when that's the thing that somebody is primarily engaging with.
- 46:42Speaker 6: You know.
- 46:43Speaker 7: Also it can be hot if it's the right person,
- 46:45Speaker 7: But it is that thing of does this person like
- 46:48Speaker 7: me or are? And also sometimes there is like a
- 46:52Speaker 7: power dynamic to it that is like creepy and not
- 46:57Speaker 7: the most fun of being like I'm a regular gang
- 47:00Speaker 7: eye and you're a sad, fat guy, but I will
- 47:02Speaker 7: still be nice to you. And I was like, nobody
- 47:05Speaker 7: needs that. I understand far too well where Stephen is
- 47:09Speaker 7: and where he's coming from, and I think part of
- 47:12Speaker 7: it is just remembering how far we've come in our lifetimes.
- 47:15Speaker 7: That like, when guys like him and I were in
- 47:18Speaker 7: high school, there was no expectation that any of these
- 47:20Speaker 7: things would be possible, and you weren't treating them as
- 47:23Speaker 7: a reality, and I think, you know, and the guys
- 47:25Speaker 7: that were dating have a different understanding of what relationships
- 47:29Speaker 7: are and what they're looking for, and so I think
- 47:33Speaker 7: accepting that is really important, but also putting yourself in
- 47:37Speaker 7: the spaces where there are more people who will like you.
- 47:40Speaker 7: Going to bare Week at Provincetown if you live in
- 47:43Speaker 7: New England, you know, it's like, go there, and there
- 47:46Speaker 7: are way I think that immersion is a good thing.
- 47:50Speaker 7: Some of these things that may feel uncomfortable or weird,
- 47:53Speaker 7: like a Chevy chaser or like bear activities can feel weird,
- 47:57Speaker 7: but then once you're there, like you just you get
- 48:01Speaker 7: in the water and you realize it's.
- 48:03Speaker 2: Fine, yeah, and you can and then you're among more
- 48:05Speaker 2: of your people.
- 48:06Speaker 1: And also there's like all these you know, this is
- 48:08Speaker 1: true for single people and whatever your sexual preference is
- 48:11Speaker 1: or identity is, but like you can go online and
- 48:14Speaker 1: look for gay activities in your city and look for
- 48:17Speaker 1: people who are also looking for gay activities in your
- 48:20Speaker 1: city without it being you know.
- 48:21Speaker 7: But I think there's also a way that the way
- 48:23Speaker 7: we have talked to fat people about fatness for such
- 48:25Speaker 7: a long time is there will be a future time
- 48:27Speaker 7: when you get to lead your life and be happy,
- 48:29Speaker 7: and like, yes, releasing that and just sort of saying,
- 48:32Speaker 7: like what needs to happen needs to happen with this
- 48:35Speaker 7: me right here. And like I also think just doing
- 48:38Speaker 7: things to be embodied. Like in Lindy's books, she talks
- 48:42Speaker 7: about getting a tattoo and accepting that like this, like
- 48:45Speaker 7: I have ownership over my body, and I think like
- 48:49Speaker 7: letting yourself own and enjoy your own body is a
- 48:51Speaker 7: great way to like start accepting it. But also, and
- 48:55Speaker 7: I should be lecturing two women about this, but like
- 48:58Speaker 7: there's also a way that like, we live in a
- 49:00Speaker 7: society that has so many opinions about your body that
- 49:03Speaker 7: being able to divorce yourself from what society tells you
- 49:06Speaker 7: is kind of impossible.
- 49:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I do like what you say about you know, Lindy.
- 49:10Speaker 3: I think it's also helpful Stephen to start observing media
- 49:15Speaker 3: from like fat activists and storytellers and creatives, you know,
- 49:19Speaker 3: listen to the Maintenance Phase podcast and like put yourself
- 49:21Speaker 3: in spaces where like your body is being talked about
- 49:24Speaker 3: in a positive way and it can really help undo
- 49:26Speaker 3: some of the the trauma error.
- 49:28Speaker 1: But I do agree with you. I do think it's like,
- 49:29Speaker 1: I mean, I can relate to that so much. When
- 49:31Speaker 1: I was a kid and like, you know, dealing with
- 49:33Speaker 1: my weight or whatever. I was never fat, but I
- 49:36Speaker 1: thought I was, you know, like body dysmorphia, and I
- 49:38Speaker 1: was always like, oh, when I'm thin, when I'm thin,
- 49:41Speaker 1: when i'm thin, that's when things.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Will start to really kick off, you know what I mean.
- 49:45Speaker 1: So I can relate to the idea that like, one
- 49:47Speaker 1: day in the future you're gonna do but it is
- 49:50Speaker 1: I think it is really like when you don't accept yourself,
- 49:54Speaker 1: it's hard to get another person to accept you, Like
- 49:56Speaker 1: you have to start with self love. And as corny
- 49:58Speaker 1: as that may sound, seems to be the truth for
- 50:01Speaker 1: so many people.
- 50:01Speaker 7: Well and also except to acknowledge the fact that, like
- 50:05Speaker 7: other people do have messed up heads about these things.
- 50:08Speaker 7: And it's not about your failure. It's about a world
- 50:11Speaker 7: that isn't great, and I think going into it with
- 50:14Speaker 7: like understanding that that's part of the lay of the
- 50:17Speaker 7: land is good. We can't fix it all in our
- 50:20Speaker 7: own heads, you know.
- 50:21Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Okay, Steven, put yourself out there and check
- 50:25Speaker 3: in with us, okay, and look.
- 50:27Speaker 1: Up for some gay activities in the area that you live, Like,
- 50:29Speaker 1: what are gay guys doing besides hunting each other on grinder?
- 50:33Speaker 5: Like?
- 50:33Speaker 1: Actually, like stuff that you can do outside stuff or
- 50:36Speaker 1: stuff that you can like, you know, events that.
- 50:38Speaker 2: You can go to, ballroom dancing.
- 50:40Speaker 1: I don't know, whatever you're interested in, like hiking or Look.
- 50:43Speaker 7: Ten years ago, the gay dodgeball really was the meat
- 50:47Speaker 7: Marco West Hollywood. Now it's all about pickleball. It's all
- 50:50Speaker 7: about pickleball.
- 50:50Speaker 2: All right. I saw this.
- 50:52Speaker 1: I saw this Instagram post the other night, going how
- 50:54Speaker 1: much longer are we going to let white people dominate pickleball?
- 50:58Speaker 1: Get in there and fucking show them how it's done.
- 51:02Speaker 7: Somebody's doing the Winter Olympics. I forget who was like,
- 51:05Speaker 7: once black people enter speed skate age, it's over free.
- 51:12Speaker 3: Okay, Well, our last caller today is Amber, She says
- 51:17Speaker 3: high friends. So, I'm in my early thirties and I'm
- 51:19Speaker 3: ready to take the next step in my relationship with
- 51:21Speaker 3: my beautiful girlfriend. I'm finally at a point in my
- 51:23Speaker 3: life where I think it would be good to take
- 51:25Speaker 3: the next steps and propose within the next year or two.
- 51:27Speaker 3: I'm afraid because her family, specifically her parents, are not
- 51:30Speaker 3: supportive and She's a super family oriented person. She's someone
- 51:34Speaker 3: that would ask me if I got her parents' approval
- 51:36Speaker 3: before asking her. I feel so I'm at a crossroads here.
- 51:39Speaker 3: I'm not traditional by any means, and she definitely is traditional.
- 51:42Speaker 3: Any advice for how to move forward that way?
- 51:44Speaker 2: With love? Amber?
- 51:45Speaker 3: Hi?
- 51:46Speaker 6: Amber?
- 51:46Speaker 1: Our special guest is Guy Brandham today. Hello, Hi, Well,
- 51:51Speaker 1: so you have a relationship and a woman that you
- 51:53Speaker 1: love and that you want to propose to. That's exciting,
- 51:56Speaker 1: and have you discussed getting married with her?
- 51:59Speaker 3: Yes?
- 51:59Speaker 2: And she's very excited about it.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Okay, So do you think that she's expecting you to
- 52:07Speaker 1: go to her parents and ask for a permission?
- 52:10Speaker 9: I think that would be her idea.
- 52:12Speaker 7: How long have you guys been together?
- 52:14Speaker 2: Almost three years?
- 52:16Speaker 7: Okay, I don't know.
- 52:17Speaker 3: I think in all realms, asking the parents like permission
- 52:21Speaker 3: or approval feels so dated.
- 52:22Speaker 2: I agree.
- 52:23Speaker 1: I feel like that is just it's just not the
- 52:27Speaker 1: way the world should be working. Like if they're not
- 52:30Speaker 1: supportive of the relationship at best, you can get like
- 52:33Speaker 1: a tepid okay, and that's just like almost put sustain
- 52:38Speaker 1: on the like the whole process of proposing.
- 52:41Speaker 4: Now ever, what is your relationship like with her parents.
- 52:43Speaker 9: Have you met them, I've met them. They're cordial to me,
- 52:49Speaker 9: they let me in their house, but it's not they
- 52:57Speaker 9: definitely don't accept us.
- 52:58Speaker 3: Like it's not warm and invite and like they should
- 53:01Speaker 3: be with their daughter's partner.
- 53:03Speaker 9: No, I think they're in denial as well.
- 53:05Speaker 7: So that happens with parents. One of the things I'm
- 53:08Speaker 7: obsessed with is that we are the first generation of
- 53:10Speaker 7: queer people who get to have real legal marriages, and
- 53:13Speaker 7: that we get to build our own traditions along the way,
- 53:17Speaker 7: and so much of the time we can feel like
- 53:19Speaker 7: bound or constrained by the old school ways. And so
- 53:24Speaker 7: I would say, if you don't feel comfortable going and
- 53:27Speaker 7: asking her parents' permission, go to her best friend, go
- 53:30Speaker 7: to her sister, go to someone else who is like
- 53:34Speaker 7: a person who respects her and your relationship. So when
- 53:38Speaker 7: she does say did you ask my parents' permission, you
- 53:40Speaker 7: can be like, I didn't know how that will go.
- 53:42Speaker 7: So that's why I talked to Brian. You know, I
- 53:46Speaker 7: like that.
- 53:46Speaker 2: I think that's great.
- 53:47Speaker 9: I think I can go the sister out.
- 53:50Speaker 2: That would be good.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a great idea. Guy, that's really really good.
- 53:54Speaker 1: You're right, you get to that's kind of I'm glad
- 53:57Speaker 1: you said that that this is the first generation of
- 53:59Speaker 1: people who get to get married as gay people, and
- 54:02Speaker 1: you should set some new traditions because that is antiquated
- 54:05Speaker 1: asking a parent for permission. It's like, I wouldn't give
- 54:08Speaker 1: a shit what my parents said anyway.
- 54:10Speaker 7: Like I have been to a gay wedding where like
- 54:14Speaker 7: parents sat there annoyed the entire time or just weirded
- 54:17Speaker 7: out by it. But I still think it's important. I
- 54:20Speaker 7: think one of the things that a wedding is about
- 54:24Speaker 7: is showing your parents that you're a real adult who
- 54:26Speaker 7: gets to make real decisions on your own. So, you know,
- 54:30Speaker 7: I think invite them and let them be whatever kind
- 54:33Speaker 7: of pills they want to be, but also maybe don't
- 54:36Speaker 7: put them in the position of being able to gate
- 54:39Speaker 7: keep this relationship.
- 54:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I wonder what you also think the two of
- 54:42Speaker 3: you about. After you've proposed and it's a yes, and
- 54:46Speaker 3: everyone's excited, writing them a letter telling them how much
- 54:49Speaker 3: you love their daughter, You're going to take care of her,
- 54:52Speaker 3: You're so excited for this new step in your life.
- 54:55Speaker 3: How do you feel about that and engaging them in
- 54:57Speaker 3: that way? But it's sort of like you're giving it
- 54:58Speaker 3: to them and they can absorb.
- 55:00Speaker 1: I just kind of feel like, fuck you if parents
- 55:02Speaker 1: are like that, do you know what I mean? Like,
- 55:04Speaker 1: it's just not helpful. You're supposed to love your child
- 55:07Speaker 1: no matter what. How can you judge them based on
- 55:09Speaker 1: who they're attracted to.
- 55:11Speaker 7: But I also think that there's the way that like,
- 55:13Speaker 7: when you have somebody, like for so many queer people,
- 55:15Speaker 7: being able to hold these things in the same space
- 55:18Speaker 7: is really really hard. And when you have somebody who
- 55:21Speaker 7: is really close to their family but has never been
- 55:24Speaker 7: sort of like aggressive about saying like you need to
- 55:27Speaker 7: create this space for me, it can be really hard.
- 55:29Speaker 7: And you don't want that to be something that impairs
- 55:31Speaker 7: your marriage, where your partner has to feel like she
- 55:35Speaker 7: is to give something up to be in this relationship.
- 55:39Speaker 7: And so I do think like sending a letter and
- 55:43Speaker 7: keeping a door open isn't a terrible idea. But you know,
- 55:47Speaker 7: there is also a deep part of me that understands
- 55:49Speaker 7: and respects Chelsea's. If you don't like this, go fuck
- 55:52Speaker 7: yourself perspective.
- 55:53Speaker 1: It is nice to send a letter and say like
- 55:55Speaker 1: it within that letter to be like hey, listen, letting
- 55:58Speaker 1: them know what's happening, I ask, And also and just
- 56:02Speaker 1: saying I didn't come to you in a traditional way
- 56:04Speaker 1: because this isn't a traditional relationship and it's been you know,
- 56:07Speaker 1: clear that you guys.
- 56:09Speaker 2: You know, I think you should maybe.
- 56:10Speaker 1: Like not like call them out, but like I didn't
- 56:13Speaker 1: feel comfortable coming to you, you know, Like.
- 56:16Speaker 2: I hope that can change in the future.
- 56:17Speaker 1: I hope we can create a relationship or a foster
- 56:20Speaker 1: as some sort of relationship, Like if you wanted to
- 56:23Speaker 1: say that, I can understand wanting to say that. I
- 56:26Speaker 1: don't think it's fucking necessary, but I can understand if
- 56:29Speaker 1: you want to really respect her relationship with her family.
- 56:32Speaker 1: But I think asking the sister is a real great
- 56:36Speaker 1: Like I think that's just a great suggestion.
- 56:38Speaker 9: Yeah, I like, I like that suggestion. I don't think
- 56:41Speaker 9: either of our parents would attend, so I think the
- 56:45Speaker 9: letter would, if anything, would be just I don't know,
- 56:50Speaker 9: I don't know what that would look like. But I
- 56:52Speaker 9: think I want to respect that she is so close
- 56:56Speaker 9: to her family. But yeah, at the same time, I'm
- 56:59Speaker 9: not looking being for their approval of family erect Yeah,
- 57:02Speaker 9: for sure.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Well, I think you cover all your bases with asking
- 57:05Speaker 2: her sister.
- 57:06Speaker 6: Yeah, well that's true.
- 57:09Speaker 3: All right, Amber, will you send us pictures of the
- 57:11Speaker 3: engagement when it happens.
- 57:13Speaker 2: I will, all right. Congratulations, Yeah, it's really exciting. That's Amber.
- 57:18Speaker 9: Thank you, and thank you so much again.
- 57:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 57:21Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 57:25Speaker 1: I just want to remind you of the call that
- 57:27Speaker 1: we got like a couple of weeks ago, when they
- 57:29Speaker 1: were like, we have a guy at work that clears
- 57:32Speaker 1: his throat incessantly. I am that man, now, I mean
- 57:35Speaker 1: I've always been that man. All I do is go
- 57:37Speaker 1: like this, and I haven't even smoked weed.
- 57:40Speaker 2: I did.
- 57:41Speaker 1: I smoked smoking with Yaminika on Saturday, but what's today Tuesday?
- 57:46Speaker 7: I like, I was doing a bunch of colleges and
- 57:49Speaker 7: so I was listening obsessively to podcasts of college classes
- 57:55Speaker 7: and there was this man, like an amazing Greek historian
- 57:58Speaker 7: and it was the best class and he literally could
- 58:02Speaker 7: not go more than like he was like clearing his
- 58:04Speaker 7: throat every third syllable, and it was so annoyed. It's
- 58:09Speaker 7: so hard, I know, I know, I.
