Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome into the NFL Report, James Palmer, Steve Whites with you.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We're gonna be joined by one of the best young
- 0:11Speaker 1: running backs in all of football, Brian Robinson of the
- 0:14Speaker 1: Red Hot Washington Commanders.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Can't miss that interview coming up.
- 0:18Speaker 1: But we have to start, Steve with the big story
- 0:20Speaker 1: out of the Midwest. As you're sitting there, as I
- 0:22Speaker 1: see the backgrounds people listening can't see it.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Here in Santa Clara right.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Now as we do this, Yeah, Thursday night football, you know. Otherwise,
- 0:31Speaker 3: Notice the day after the meltdown in Chicago, we're gonna
- 0:36Speaker 3: have a lot on this. You know, we're gonna talk
- 0:37Speaker 3: about this. We're gonna have Brian Baldinger come in and
- 0:39Speaker 3: actually do some film breakdown to help us out with this.
- 0:42Speaker 4: But JP, you know, yesterday it was just an absolutely
- 0:46Speaker 4: you know, we've all had chaotic days in our journalistic careers,
- 0:49Speaker 4: but what went down in Chicago started with quarterback Justin
- 0:55Speaker 4: Fields at a news conference saying this about his erratic place.
- 1:00Speaker 5: You thus far, I felt like, you know, I wasn't
- 1:03Speaker 5: necessarily playing my game. I felt like I was kind
- 1:06Speaker 5: of robotic and you know, not just not not not
- 1:10Speaker 5: playing like myself. So you know, my goal this week
- 1:13Speaker 5: is just to you know, say effort and just go
- 1:15Speaker 5: out there and you know, play football. How I know
- 1:17Speaker 5: how to play football?
- 1:18Speaker 3: What do you say, thinking less?
- 1:19Speaker 6: What do you think was causing you to think so much?
- 1:22Speaker 3: Think much?
- 1:23Speaker 5: You know, coaching, I think. But you know, at the
- 1:27Speaker 5: end of the day, it makes it. You know, they're
- 1:30Speaker 5: doing their job when they're giving me, you know what
- 1:32Speaker 5: to look at when the game comes, it's you know,
- 1:35Speaker 5: it's it's it's time to play free at that point.
- 1:37Speaker 5: So you know, just thinking less and you know, playing more.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Oh boy, oh boy, the coaching, that's not working right.
- 1:47Speaker 4: But then the Bears went out to practice JP after
- 1:49Speaker 4: all of the chaos, after all of us were like,
- 1:51Speaker 4: what is justin Feel's doing.
- 1:53Speaker 3: You just rolled Luke gettius Oci under the bus and.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Then did this rarity as he reconvened the me in
- 2:00Speaker 4: the locker room post practice.
- 2:04Speaker 2: You guys' jobs are to get clicked.
- 2:05Speaker 7: So it's like when you take my quote out of context,
- 2:09Speaker 7: when you just say that, if you paint the picture
- 2:11Speaker 7: on the inside out, like y'all are trying to split
- 2:14Speaker 7: us up as a team at I'm not blaming anything
- 2:16Speaker 7: on the coaches. I'm never gonna blame anything on the coaches,
- 2:19Speaker 7: never gonna blame anything.
- 2:19Speaker 3: On my teammates.
- 2:21Speaker 7: I will take every whatever happens in the game, I
- 2:23Speaker 7: would take all the blame.
- 2:24Speaker 3: I don't care it's a drop pass, it should have
- 2:26Speaker 3: been a pass.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Put it on me. I need to play better.
- 2:29Speaker 3: That's it.
- 2:30Speaker 7: Point blame if y'all that's what I should have said
- 2:32Speaker 7: in the first place.
- 2:35Speaker 3: A whole lot to unpack here, JP, a whole lot.
- 2:37Speaker 4: And just to add to a general manager, Ryan Poles
- 2:40Speaker 4: came out Thursday and said, there's not one person in
- 2:42Speaker 4: the building, including the coaches, that think Justin Fields is
- 2:46Speaker 4: finger pointing. But let's take this from the top. The
- 2:50Speaker 4: initial thing. Look, we've seen Justin Fields. He has been
- 2:52Speaker 4: a erratic.
- 2:53Speaker 3: He is sometimes look.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Fantastic, other times just looked completely lost.
- 2:58Speaker 3: And when you hear the comments.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Too much information, too much going on, it could be
- 3:04Speaker 4: coaching take us, take us where your thoughts went, because
- 3:08Speaker 4: there is a lot to analyze and decompress here.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I think Steve the biggest part that I got
- 3:15Speaker 1: after that initial comment, and everybody just really clips that
- 3:19Speaker 1: first part off, right. I think coaching send that tweet out.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Send that tweet right away, and then we'll let Twitter explode.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I think later in the press conference when he was
- 3:28Speaker 1: talking about I'm trying to process so much information and
- 3:32Speaker 1: I'm just trying to simplify it in my head. To me,
- 3:36Speaker 1: that actually tells me he is taking the coaching right
- 3:39Speaker 1: because he's listening to all of this and he's trying
- 3:42Speaker 1: to process all of it. So to me, some people said, well,
- 3:45Speaker 1: he doesn't like the coaching, he's not coachable. I don't
- 3:49Speaker 1: think that's the case, because it sounds like he feels
- 3:51Speaker 1: overloaded to where he is taking all of this information,
- 3:55Speaker 1: and I think that's the part that he thinks is
- 3:58Speaker 1: not allowing him to play extremely fast on Sunday, because
- 4:01Speaker 1: you're right, we've seen him play really really good football
- 4:04Speaker 1: at times, and we've seen times where you're just wondering.
- 4:07Speaker 1: We'll talk to Brian Baldinger later in the show about
- 4:09Speaker 1: some of those plays that make you scratch your head.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Steve.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I think Ryan Poles on Thursday when he said, I
- 4:15Speaker 1: think Justin's trying to find that balance between last year
- 4:18Speaker 1: when we had a subpar lineup and a subpar roster
- 4:22Speaker 1: where he had to put this team on his back
- 4:23Speaker 1: at times and carry us. And now we may have
- 4:26Speaker 1: a better roster. We'd like him to play from the pocket,
- 4:28Speaker 1: do some more things like a quarterback. He's trying to
- 4:30Speaker 1: find that balance between the two. I think this is
- 4:33Speaker 1: all going on in Justin Field's head because he's trying
- 4:36Speaker 1: to grow in an aspect, but it's not actually clicking
- 4:39Speaker 1: early on.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, look, clearly something was lost in translation.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Not even so much with his message to the media,
- 4:46Speaker 4: but what's going on with lu Getzy, his play caller,
- 4:50Speaker 4: And that's where the communication probably should have said. You know,
- 4:52Speaker 4: he should have said, coach, you know, look, there's a
- 4:55Speaker 4: lot going on here.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Right and Luke getsy. He also spoke on Thursday.
- 4:59Speaker 4: He didn't come out and go Sean Payton say, you
- 5:01Speaker 4: know what, we're gonna work on some things to simplify it,
- 5:04Speaker 4: because maybe we are overloading him.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Maybe there are too many voices in his head. So
- 5:09Speaker 3: they still have some things to absolutely break through.
- 5:12Speaker 4: But whenever a player comes out and talks about coaching.
- 5:17Speaker 4: The bigger picture of this right now is this Bears
- 5:21Speaker 4: offense better come out and play well because Luke Getzy
- 5:23Speaker 4: automatically is gonna.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Yeah, they got the Chiefs, right.
- 5:27Speaker 4: They have the Chiefs this Sunday, So we have to
- 5:29Speaker 4: come out and ball out, right, we got we got
- 5:31Speaker 4: this guy to compare to Patrick Mahomes.
- 5:32Speaker 3: On the other side, our offense has to come.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Out and look good against the defense that's played really
- 5:37Speaker 4: well thus far. But again, when you come out and
- 5:40Speaker 4: you start cigning your coaches and you are the projected
- 5:43Speaker 4: franchise quarterback, that makes the coach say, well, honey, you
- 5:47Speaker 4: know this house we like here. We may we may
- 5:48Speaker 4: want to you know, we may be in a situation
- 5:51Speaker 4: where we might not be here next year, and then
- 5:53Speaker 4: whoever might come in might also have to say, like, well,
- 5:56Speaker 4: you know, we've got this quarterback, got one coach, let go.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I've got to find a way to make it happen,
- 6:01Speaker 4: because if they're committed to him, they're not committed to
- 6:04Speaker 4: us JP all right.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Also, on another note.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Since we're talking about quarterbacks, especially mobile quarterbacks learning a
- 6:11Speaker 4: new system, we have seen Lamar Jackson come under with
- 6:16Speaker 4: Todd Monkin the new offensive coordinator, and in two.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Games look really really good.
- 6:21Speaker 4: And also James by virtue of what happened Monday night,
- 6:25Speaker 4: the Ravens look like They're in a really good position
- 6:28Speaker 4: to jump out in the AFC North early on.
- 6:31Speaker 1: This is steve the toughest division in the NFL. And
- 6:35Speaker 1: when you start too and zero and you look at
- 6:37Speaker 1: the rest of the teams in the division in what
- 6:39Speaker 1: they're dealing with. We saw the devastating injury to Nick
- 6:42Speaker 1: Chubb on an offense that is based around his running
- 6:45Speaker 1: game is arguably the best I'll do. I'll lose arguably
- 6:48Speaker 1: the best running back in all of football. That changes
- 6:51Speaker 1: things for Cleveland. We know Cincinnati is zero and two,
- 6:53Speaker 1: oh by the way, oh and two in the division
- 6:55Speaker 1: and Joe Burrows still dealing with the calf injury to
- 6:58Speaker 1: When I talk to people in Cincinnati, they're not sure
- 7:00Speaker 1: how long that is going to.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Continue to nag him.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And this is still very early in Kenny Pickett's career
- 7:05Speaker 1: as a starting quarterback. So to jump out to a
- 7:07Speaker 1: zero and get that win against Cincinnati, And now that
- 7:11Speaker 1: you see this offense built the way it's built, we
- 7:14Speaker 1: know that it is built off of the run in
- 7:16Speaker 1: the past, and we know that it's been built off
- 7:18Speaker 1: of Mark Andrews. He has had a larger percentage of
- 7:21Speaker 1: any team in the NFL se even terms of a
- 7:24Speaker 1: tight end catching the largest percentage of their catches, their yards,
- 7:27Speaker 1: their receiving touchdowns. Now he has receivers on the outside
- 7:31Speaker 1: to help him. When I had a chance to talk
- 7:33Speaker 1: to him, every receiver goes, oh, great tight end helps
- 7:35Speaker 1: me out on the outside.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Flip it.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Great receivers in the outside make life even easier for
- 7:41Speaker 1: a better tight end in the middle to maybe one
- 7:43Speaker 1: of the best tight ends in football play even better.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And the part that jumps out at me the most
- 7:47Speaker 1: is this, with this passing game with more weapons, will
- 7:51Speaker 1: we see a healthier Lamar Jackson down the stretch if
- 7:55Speaker 1: they can play in this style of offense throwing the
- 7:57Speaker 1: football as accurately as he had in Injuries at the
- 8:00Speaker 1: end of the season have been an issue for Lamar
- 8:02Speaker 1: Jackson and the Ravens. Could this style of play there
- 8:04Speaker 1: in now Steve help them to have a healthier Lamar
- 8:07Speaker 1: Jackson at the end of the year if they're rolling this.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Early, Yeah, I mean it really could.
- 8:12Speaker 4: And look in the fact that they're rolling with a
- 8:14Speaker 4: lot two starting offensive linemen and they're starting running back JK.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Dobbins. That's got to be super encouraging. But JP just.
- 8:21Speaker 4: To bring it back because we're talking quarterbacks in this division.
- 8:24Speaker 4: To Shaun Watson, he has got more.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Pressure than ever. I mean, their contract is what it
- 8:28Speaker 3: is about Nick Chubb. He really has to deliver.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Especially with a team like the Ravens figuring it out
- 8:35Speaker 4: pretty quickly and evolving and the Browns looking like they're
- 8:39Speaker 4: somewhat stuck in mud a little bit, especially with not
- 8:42Speaker 4: having Nick Chubb.
- 8:44Speaker 2: That's huge.
- 8:45Speaker 1: And we know their defense is going to be better
- 8:47Speaker 1: than it was a season ago now that Jim Schwartz
- 8:49Speaker 1: is running that group. But you mentioned the injuries, and
- 8:51Speaker 1: you're right, Tyler Linderbaum their center, and Ronnie Staley, they're
- 8:55Speaker 1: going to be coming back. They didn't play a game
- 8:57Speaker 1: yet with Marlon Humphrey their number one on corner they
- 9:00Speaker 1: haven't played a game with yet, and their star safety,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and Marcus Williams has the peck injury. He is not
- 9:07Speaker 1: going to be done for the season. Might have to play.
- 9:09Speaker 1: You talk to me about it. Maybe with that harness
- 9:11Speaker 1: you know, in the middle of the field. But he's
- 9:12Speaker 1: head of the communication for this Ravens defense. And Juno
- 9:15Speaker 1: Stone comes in and plays in his place and plays great.
- 9:18Speaker 1: They haven't been healthy but they've been rolling early too.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And oh and that might give them a great advantage
- 9:23Speaker 1: early on in the toughest division in all of football.
- 9:27Speaker 1: There's another division. How about the NFC East Steve that
- 9:31Speaker 1: has three teams sitting at two and oh, one of
- 9:34Speaker 1: them being the Dallas Cowboys.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Listen to this, Hey, we can't want a message.
- 9:40Speaker 8: It's Captain Chew and we don't.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Capture the Cowboys special team is the first start here?
- 9:47Speaker 3: What perfect row here by Dad Prescott?
- 9:50Speaker 2: Right Martins, Martin's got it.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Right.
- 9:57Speaker 3: You do not run out of pools the champaign.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Tony Pollard walked the dog and scoring his second touchdown
- 10:06Speaker 1: of the night. The Cowboys win to shut out.
- 10:11Speaker 2: That was a beating, all right.
- 10:16Speaker 3: That was the video of the Cowboys Week one.
- 10:18Speaker 4: They come back week two against the Jets and they
- 10:21Speaker 4: stake further ownership in the state of New Jersey and
- 10:23Speaker 4: beat them thirty to ten.
- 10:24Speaker 3: JP.
- 10:24Speaker 4: They're allowing this defense five points a game, all right,
- 10:28Speaker 4: five points a.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Game out of the gate.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Oh and they've got the Arizona Cardinals this week.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Don't you think it's funny? We spent all off season.
- 10:37Speaker 4: On DAK is gonna be this DAK can't play those
- 10:39Speaker 4: too many interceptions. Yet the first two weeks of the season,
- 10:42Speaker 4: we're not talking about Dak.
- 10:44Speaker 3: We're talking about the side of the ball that starts
- 10:47Speaker 3: with D.
- 10:49Speaker 1: It starts with D and d Ware also told us
- 10:52Speaker 1: on this show that if Micah Parsons has the type
- 10:55Speaker 1: of season this season and several of them moving forward,
- 10:58Speaker 1: he's gonna break d ware all time Cowboys sack record.
- 11:02Speaker 1: And he said, if this d plays like this on
- 11:04Speaker 1: this show, the Cowboys are going to the Super Bowl.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Micah Parsons. When I took to Jets coaches after this
- 11:11Speaker 1: game during the week and then went over the film,
- 11:13Speaker 1: they said, Steve, he just did whatever he wanted to
- 11:15Speaker 1: on the field, like he could do whatever he wanted
- 11:17Speaker 1: to do and attack us however he wanted. He had
- 11:20Speaker 1: four tackles, three of them for a loss, two sacks,
- 11:22Speaker 1: four quarterback hits, a pass defense to forced fumble, a
- 11:25Speaker 1: fumble recovery. He really, sir, Popcorn, he did everything in
- 11:29Speaker 1: this entire game. And he's kind of the lynchpin of
- 11:32Speaker 1: this entire defense that is so deep, able to pressure
- 11:35Speaker 1: you from a variety of spots. And now that Dan
- 11:37Speaker 1: Quinn remember pull his name out of head coaching searches
- 11:40Speaker 1: each of the last two years been able to mold
- 11:43Speaker 1: this defense into exactly what he has wanted with a
- 11:46Speaker 1: rush and cover aspect to it. Don't forget Stefan gilmourrise
- 11:49Speaker 1: your number two corner Like this team is deep an
- 11:52Speaker 1: ability to do a lot of different things to you.
- 11:55Speaker 1: As a full defense, this might be the group that
- 11:58Speaker 1: carries him. And we'll see what Dak does playing second
- 12:01Speaker 1: fiddle in a sense to making sure that nothing hurts
- 12:04Speaker 1: this team in a sense changing their style offensively a
- 12:07Speaker 1: little bit.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Well, I mean, and look, JP, I love this defense,
- 12:11Speaker 4: I love the personnel, I love their depth, I love
- 12:13Speaker 4: what they're doing. But can we really sit here and
- 12:16Speaker 4: say they're the bosses? Because again they played the Giants
- 12:19Speaker 4: forty to nothing, they played the Jets, they played Arizona
- 12:22Speaker 4: this week, and then they played New.
- 12:23Speaker 3: England in Week four? Right? This always continue this trend
- 12:27Speaker 3: for too more?
- 12:28Speaker 4: Oh well, that's when things get really interesting, right, don't
- 12:31Speaker 4: they have the run.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Of the Niners, the Chargers, the Rams.
- 12:36Speaker 4: There's another one in there, another offensive team that we're
- 12:40Speaker 4: going to figure out.
- 12:41Speaker 3: I think the Eagles are in the mix as well.
- 12:43Speaker 4: So this is where We're really going to find out
- 12:46Speaker 4: about the defense, but they have two more games to
- 12:48Speaker 4: solidify themselves even further before staking their claim, possibly on
- 12:55Speaker 4: top of the NFC East, say Pe, you know.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Who's getting it done. The Miami Dolphins are getting it done.
- 13:03Speaker 4: And coming up next, Cameron Wolf is going to say
- 13:06Speaker 4: the key reason why has everything to do with the
- 13:10Speaker 4: backfield in motion.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Here on the NFL.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Report, our back of the NFL Report.
- 13:20Speaker 4: We're getting ready to head into Week three of the
- 13:23Speaker 4: NFL season. Steve White, James Palmer now joined by Cameron
- 13:26Speaker 4: Wolf and Cameron the Miami Dolphins. Their offense looks more
- 13:32Speaker 4: dynamic than ever the Tua Tyreek connection. Besides familiarity, what's
- 13:37Speaker 4: kind of the secret sauce brewing between these two?
- 13:41Speaker 6: Yes, Steve, they have the quickest time to throw and
- 13:44Speaker 6: the largest yards per attempt, which those are two stats
- 13:47Speaker 6: that don't typically go together. They're getting the ball quick
- 13:49Speaker 6: and they're throwing it deep and really a key core
- 13:52Speaker 6: that has been the Dolphins motion, and this week I
- 13:54Speaker 6: wanted to dive a little deeper into what makes that
- 13:57Speaker 6: motion go. And when you look at some of the
- 14:00Speaker 6: the elements they do, they adjust to what the defenses
- 14:03Speaker 6: give them the motion stuff is not new. They did
- 14:05Speaker 6: it a bunch last year, but this year teams crowded
- 14:08Speaker 6: the middle of the field where Tua loves to throw
- 14:10Speaker 6: the ball, and you've seen them, particularly with Tyreek Hill,
- 14:13Speaker 6: have a wheel route on the back of it. They've
- 14:15Speaker 6: had a short motion on the back of it. Anything
- 14:17Speaker 6: to get Tyreek in motion. And Frank Smith, their offensive coordinator,
- 14:22Speaker 6: told me every single motion they do has a purpose
- 14:25Speaker 6: and it's not like a lot of teams where they
- 14:26Speaker 6: do it as window dressing or to show if his
- 14:28Speaker 6: manners own, he says, no, we do things directly based
- 14:32Speaker 6: off of how they react to the motion. For example,
- 14:35Speaker 6: if their defense will crowd the middle of the field,
- 14:37Speaker 6: we'll throw that real wheel route on the back of things.
- 14:40Speaker 6: And so I think that's been a huge key to
- 14:42Speaker 6: while the Dolphins have been so successful. Tua also told
- 14:45Speaker 6: me they see the chaos on the field. They force
- 14:47Speaker 6: defenses to communicate to extreme and it makes mistakes and
- 14:51Speaker 6: they take advantage of it.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Well, love cam is the way they use motion is
- 14:57Speaker 1: it's not a guy just you know, running across the field.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Do you remember a good junior and Jerry Maguire coming
- 15:01Speaker 1: across with the two hands up, just.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Like real slow across the back. No.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I mean Tyreek Hill is moving in a lot of
- 15:09Speaker 1: these motions and he is really really moving. And Sean
- 15:13Speaker 1: Payton said an interesting thing this week when he stated
- 15:16Speaker 1: one of them underrated aspects that makes Tyreek Hill so
- 15:19Speaker 1: dynamic is his stamina. He can run for days and
- 15:22Speaker 1: this is kind of adding to it in a sense.
- 15:24Speaker 2: But how do they go about all of this work
- 15:27Speaker 2: within motion?
- 15:28Speaker 1: You talk about how they do it differently, what do
- 15:30Speaker 1: they do differently during the week to allow them to
- 15:33Speaker 1: have this success though.
- 15:35Speaker 6: Yeah, James, there's a lot of behind the scenes elements,
- 15:37Speaker 6: including their wide receivers and their running backs. Having specific
- 15:40Speaker 6: elements of their meeting focus solely on motion, they will
- 15:43Speaker 6: just have those still position groups who come together and say, hey,
- 15:47Speaker 6: these are elements that we want to focus on this week.
- 15:49Speaker 6: We're going to do a lot of short motion and
- 15:51Speaker 6: so we're going to spend fifteen to twenty minutes of
- 15:52Speaker 6: this meeting just focused on this motion and getting it
- 15:55Speaker 6: right because there are a lot of details that we
- 15:58Speaker 6: may not see in the finished product. I was talking
- 16:00Speaker 6: to Eric Judisville earlier today and somebody mentions to him
- 16:04Speaker 6: that it looks like the CFL with Tyreek Hill running,
- 16:07Speaker 6: and he's like, wait, wait, wait, it's not the CFL
- 16:09Speaker 6: because the CFL they move forward.
- 16:10Speaker 3: That's against the rules.
- 16:12Speaker 6: We follow the rules here, right, and so the rules
- 16:14Speaker 6: are element here because Tyreek's running fast across the field,
- 16:18Speaker 6: but he has to be careful not to go forward.
- 16:20Speaker 3: And so that's where the.
- 16:21Speaker 6: Track element comes in. They have a bunch of track
- 16:23Speaker 6: news on this team, including Tyreek and it's almost like
- 16:26Speaker 6: he's running a curve. He's running horizontal at line of
- 16:29Speaker 6: scrimmage and once the snap hit he goes vertical. And
- 16:32Speaker 6: it's hard enough to cover Tyreek Hill when he's stationary.
- 16:34Speaker 6: Imagine what it's like for defenders when he's already on
- 16:37Speaker 6: go fifteen sixteen miles per hour going towards the field.
- 16:41Speaker 4: Well, and Cam, there's also with this thing too, right,
- 16:44Speaker 4: Mike McDaniel comes from the Shanahan scheme. So when you
- 16:48Speaker 4: have someone like Tyreek Hill, right, they do two versions
- 16:50Speaker 4: of their emotions too, well, several, but you've got the
- 16:54Speaker 4: straight line across the center's butt all the way through
- 16:58Speaker 4: and then sometimes he bows behind the quarterback, especially if
- 17:02Speaker 4: Tua is in pistol. So what's the first thing the
- 17:04Speaker 4: defense is gonna guard against, especially someone that fast that
- 17:07Speaker 4: is the jet.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Sweep or when he does the bow, the quick toss
- 17:11Speaker 3: or the quick screen.
- 17:12Speaker 4: So the first thing that edge defender has to do
- 17:15Speaker 4: is guard the outside and that will be a tell
- 17:18Speaker 4: because if they don't, they're gonna pop that ball out there.
- 17:22Speaker 4: And if they do, then that's when the middle of
- 17:24Speaker 4: the field opens up because there's all kinds of strategic
- 17:26Speaker 4: ways with the ways they use their motion, whether it's
- 17:29Speaker 4: that straightway or kind of that Boeing way which leads
- 17:32Speaker 4: to the CFL kind of eye candy.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we cheating camp, They're trying. They're not cheating.
- 17:41Speaker 3: They're not cheating.
- 17:42Speaker 6: But I will tell you me and you were talking
- 17:43Speaker 6: about this, James. It kind of reminds me of Dwan
- 17:46Speaker 6: Taylor with the with the Chiefs earlier this year.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Were right.
- 17:51Speaker 6: On the line of what you're supposed to do. And
- 17:53Speaker 6: that's where that meetings and the practice comes in mind.
- 17:55Speaker 6: You have to do it right so that it's so
- 17:57Speaker 6: close that the rest won't call it, but that you
- 17:59Speaker 6: use every advantage. The coaches have told me all week
- 18:02Speaker 6: that is our advantage. So we're not going to give
- 18:04Speaker 6: you the secret sauce of how we teach them and why.
- 18:07Speaker 6: You know why the intricacies are so important, But these
- 18:09Speaker 6: guys are taught specifically when they can start to go
- 18:13Speaker 6: forward and it is on the line, James, it is.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I love it, camp I love it. Good stuff, but
- 18:20Speaker 2: good stuff.
- 18:20Speaker 1: See on TV on Sunday down there for Broncos and
- 18:26Speaker 1: Dolphins on NFL Network.
- 18:27Speaker 2: See you, buddy.
- 18:28Speaker 1: We're going to bring in somebody that was there for
- 18:32Speaker 1: the first time we saw this Dolphins offense explode, and
- 18:36Speaker 1: that's Bridget Conon, who was there for that Chargers Dolphins game.
- 18:39Speaker 1: It's interesting, Bridget. We know what Justin Herbert can do.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I saw this stat today that.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Blew my mind.
- 18:45Speaker 1: There the first team, Steve in the history of the
- 18:47Speaker 1: NFL to start zero to two with more than fifty
- 18:51Speaker 1: points scored and zero giveaways.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Has never happened in the NFL.
- 18:55Speaker 1: For a team to do that offensively, Bridget, what is
- 18:58Speaker 1: going on on the other side the ball?
- 19:00Speaker 9: Yeah, James, what's the problem. It's the defense. There's so
- 19:03Speaker 9: many layers to this. Let's get into it. The Chargers
- 19:07Speaker 9: defense is the worst in total defense right now, right
- 19:10Speaker 9: they've given up the most explosive plays of anybody. But
- 19:13Speaker 9: let's talk about this. I've covered this team for a
- 19:16Speaker 9: couple of seasons. Now they bring in Brandon Staley, who
- 19:18Speaker 9: is said to be this defensive guru. They signed Khalil Mack,
- 19:22Speaker 9: they signed J. Jackson. The Chargers are the only team
- 19:25Speaker 9: that have allocated more than one hundred million dollars of
- 19:29Speaker 9: twenty twenty three cap space to their defense, and taking
- 19:32Speaker 9: that further, they've allocated the third most cap space this
- 19:36Speaker 9: season to their secondary And that's the big issue. Right
- 19:39Speaker 9: They finally seem like the defensive line has started to
- 19:43Speaker 9: figure it out that was an issue last season with
- 19:45Speaker 9: all these injuries. They've stopped the run better this season
- 19:49Speaker 9: so far than last season. But they have four guys
- 19:52Speaker 9: that are rotating in and out of corner positions. Michael Davis, J. C. Jackson,
- 19:56Speaker 9: Jasir Taylor, and Asante Samuel Junior. Brandon Saley. He did
- 20:00Speaker 9: say yesterday that Jasir Taylor is now the new starter
- 20:02Speaker 9: at Star. But you have those three other guys rotating
- 20:05Speaker 9: in and out of that corner spot, you can't get confident,
- 20:08Speaker 9: you can't get a rhythm down. So I don't really
- 20:11Speaker 9: know what the plan is for Brandon Staley. You guys,
- 20:17Speaker 9: how I wonder if a little bit of this is
- 20:20Speaker 9: about j C. Jackson, Right, You signed this guy to
- 20:23Speaker 9: a five year deal eighty two million dollars. He gets
- 20:27Speaker 9: hurt or has ankle surgery at the beginning of the
- 20:29Speaker 9: last season, plays a couple of games, then has that
- 20:32Speaker 9: knee injury. Now this whole offseason is okay. JC Jackson's
- 20:36Speaker 9: got to get back better and be smarter, be faster.
- 20:40Speaker 9: He's not. And how much are they trying to make
- 20:44Speaker 9: that work versus just using Michael Davis and a Sante
- 20:47Speaker 9: Samuel Junior.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Well, that's an issue.
- 20:49Speaker 4: I mean, if you've got a player out there who
- 20:51Speaker 4: can't go and it's harming his team, and the fact
- 20:54Speaker 4: that they're trying to get him out there to justify
- 20:55Speaker 4: his signing, that's an issue. I don't know if that's
- 20:58Speaker 4: necessarily the case. I mean, could be the way that
- 21:00Speaker 4: they've schemed these teams, But the fact that they've given
- 21:03Speaker 4: up six pass plays for more than thirty yards, that's
- 21:06Speaker 4: second most in the NFL. That's something that they have
- 21:09Speaker 4: to fix because now teams are gonna start going over
- 21:11Speaker 4: the top.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Like you said, Bridget.
- 21:13Speaker 4: Some things upfront stopping the run have gotten better, but
- 21:16Speaker 4: they're not getting to the quarterback as much either.
- 21:18Speaker 3: So the fact that the quarterback.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Is having more time to sit back there and pat
- 21:21Speaker 4: the ball goes to show you that the coverage and
- 21:24Speaker 4: the rush up front aren't the issue.
- 21:26Speaker 3: And so this is another week.
- 21:27Speaker 4: They're playing in Minnesota Vikings this week, Bridget. Justin Jefferson
- 21:30Speaker 4: is the best wide receiver in the NFL, arguably other
- 21:32Speaker 4: than Tyreek Hill. What can they do to try to
- 21:36Speaker 4: keep Justin Jefferson from adding to those explosive pass plays.
- 21:40Speaker 9: I think it's gonna come with stability, and Derwin James
- 21:42Speaker 9: was asked about it. I mean a lot of these
- 21:43Speaker 9: guys were asked. I was in the locker room yesterday
- 21:45Speaker 9: about rotating in and out, and of course they're giving
- 21:48Speaker 9: us the answer like, oh no, I think because you know,
- 21:51Speaker 9: it's a good thing because we have depth and it
- 21:53Speaker 9: guys get fresh legs. But Michael Davis was more honest
- 21:56Speaker 9: Sunday after the game and said, I can't get in
- 21:58Speaker 9: a rhythm when I'm coming. You know, you're playing drives
- 22:00Speaker 9: and then you're out your bench for a little bit
- 22:02Speaker 9: and then you're coming back in and Darwin James was
- 22:03Speaker 9: asked about this yesterday, he kind of gave a smirk
- 22:05Speaker 9: and was like, we're figuring it out, so I anticipate
- 22:09Speaker 9: that they're gonna have more stability. And also this week
- 22:12Speaker 9: in practice, they've kind of been taking this scheme out
- 22:14Speaker 9: of it and getting back to the technique because something
- 22:17Speaker 9: isn't working. Something has to change, and whether whatever they're
- 22:20Speaker 9: doing is too complex for these players to maybe grasp
- 22:23Speaker 9: this early on in the season. They got to make
- 22:25Speaker 9: it a little simpler for them, right until they can
- 22:28Speaker 9: just get back to the basics and try and stop
- 22:31Speaker 9: some of these receivers, because yeah, it's Justin Jefferson this week,
- 22:33Speaker 9: then it's DeVante Adams next week. Then you could potentially
- 22:36Speaker 9: be zero and four going into a buye.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Yeah, JP real quick.
- 22:41Speaker 1: And it's not just it's just not Justin Jefferson, it's
- 22:44Speaker 1: also Jordan Edison who comes in as the first round pick.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Also, this steve really quickly.
- 22:48Speaker 1: When you pressure a guy like Ryan Tannehill on seventy
- 22:51Speaker 1: percent of his third downs and you have pressure and
- 22:54Speaker 1: you're still not slowing down Ryan Tannehill, that's an issue
- 22:57Speaker 1: in your secondary.
- 22:59Speaker 3: That's not good. That is not a good thing.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Kind an interesting theme here, some teams having to figure
- 23:03Speaker 4: out things schematically and some.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Teams like the Ravens figuring it out.
- 23:08Speaker 4: You know who else has figured it out, the Washington
- 23:11Speaker 4: Commanders in a lot of the questions about thefts have
- 23:14Speaker 4: been answered after the break. Brian Robinson, the standout running
- 23:19Speaker 4: back for the two and zero Commanders.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Joins JP and I on the NFL report.
- 23:29Speaker 8: As we got it rolling. You guys play to your
- 23:31Speaker 8: buildings and that's what you're capable of. That's the largest
- 23:34Speaker 8: road come back this organization.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Has ever happened on the road.
- 23:42Speaker 8: So understanding on the road. That's to help his job, guys.
- 23:46Speaker 2: And it's all on you guys.
- 23:47Speaker 3: But there's one guy in here. He's got one hundred wins.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Wha fifty coaches ever and like active coaches, Ryan Barra man.
- 24:06Speaker 8: Hey, thank you all for being part of this.
- 24:07Speaker 4: It's really special just knowing that you guys all help
- 24:09Speaker 4: me get to where I am today.
- 24:11Speaker 8: Thank you guys, thank you.
- 24:14Speaker 1: We're joined by now one of the one of the people,
- 24:15Speaker 1: Ron Rivera was thinking there saying thank you guys. That's
- 24:18Speaker 1: Brian Robinson, the star I'll say star running back for
- 24:21Speaker 1: the Washington Commander Steve joins the NFL report Right now
- 24:25Speaker 1: I'm seeing that room, Brian. What is the plane ride
- 24:28Speaker 1: home after the biggest comeback in franchise history?
- 24:31Speaker 2: What goes on on the plane ride back.
- 24:33Speaker 5: To d C?
- 24:34Speaker 10: Well, you know, guys like me, you know, play so
- 24:37Speaker 10: many snaps. I'm relaxing. I'm trying to you know, trying
- 24:40Speaker 10: to just you know, keep I'm sore and all types
- 24:42Speaker 10: of stuff. But more than anything, the image is just great.
- 24:46Speaker 10: You know, everybody happy, excited, you know, just want to
- 24:50Speaker 10: talk about, you know, the game and talk about you know,
- 24:52Speaker 10: how we can you know, play better, you know, so
- 24:54Speaker 10: that you know, we don't you know, end up at
- 24:57Speaker 10: games where we're trying to scratch and cloth and then
- 24:59Speaker 10: you know the whole second hal to get the win,
- 25:00Speaker 10: but appreciating the you know, the hard work that the
- 25:04Speaker 10: whole team put in to get the win, but also
- 25:07Speaker 10: you know, trying to already you know, get a step
- 25:09Speaker 10: ahead on what we can do, you know, to just
- 25:11Speaker 10: play better as a team overall.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Ran you ando the city, you know, I used to
- 25:16Speaker 4: live in d C. I know that fan bation, how
- 25:18Speaker 4: much they love that club. The city has sold out
- 25:21Speaker 4: another home game. Can you explain to everyone just what
- 25:26Speaker 4: the atmosphere is like now with this club that you
- 25:30Speaker 4: guys are off to this great start.
- 25:32Speaker 10: The atmosphere you know, just starting off has been electric,
- 25:35Speaker 10: you know, and uh, you know that's something that you know, us,
- 25:38Speaker 10: us in the locker room, we feed off of that,
- 25:41Speaker 10: you know, and we appreciate you know, everybody who you know,
- 25:45Speaker 10: you know stick behind us as you know as we
- 25:47Speaker 10: go out and compete every weekend. Uh, you know with that,
- 25:50Speaker 10: you know, with that atmosphere, you know that they bring
- 25:52Speaker 10: it to us right now. It's just it's exciting, you know,
- 25:54Speaker 10: it's give us, you know, more reasons to want to
- 25:56Speaker 10: play for them and more reasons to you know, want
- 25:58Speaker 10: to bring wins to this, you know, to this organization.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Let's talk about you personal a little bit because you
- 26:03Speaker 1: lead the team. I don't know if you know these stats.
- 26:04Speaker 1: You lead the team in scrimmage yards right now, you
- 26:07Speaker 1: lead the team in scrimmage touchdowns so far this season.
- 26:11Speaker 1: I know you talked a lot about this offseason. You're
- 26:13Speaker 1: not just a between the tackles power back. You can
- 26:16Speaker 1: do a lot more in this offense. We're only two
- 26:18Speaker 1: games in. But where where can we see you making
- 26:22Speaker 1: an impact that we maybe didn't see your rookie year
- 26:25Speaker 1: within this Eric Enemy offense.
- 26:28Speaker 10: Uh, Like I said, you know, we're just scratching the
- 26:32Speaker 10: surface right now, you know, especially me, you know, you know,
- 26:36Speaker 10: being able to show you know, the more I can do,
- 26:37Speaker 10: the more opportunities I get. And you know, being to me,
- 26:41Speaker 10: he knows, you know, he knows what type of player
- 26:43Speaker 10: I am. He knows what I can do, and he's
- 26:45Speaker 10: going to continue to give me opportunities to showcase my
- 26:48Speaker 10: skill set. And the more he does that, I continue
- 26:51Speaker 10: to show, you know, my ability. You know what all
- 26:54Speaker 10: I can do, you know compared to you know what
- 26:56Speaker 10: people think. You know that I can do, you know,
- 26:59Speaker 10: and and I'm excited, you know, to continue to put
- 27:02Speaker 10: it out on tape and you know, show that I'm
- 27:04Speaker 10: more than just a one dimensional player.
- 27:06Speaker 2: All that point.
- 27:07Speaker 4: You mentioned Eric b Enemy right, a former former running
- 27:09Speaker 4: back coach running back. He's been an offensive coordinator, not
- 27:12Speaker 4: but now he's in charge of designing it's gaming and
- 27:15Speaker 4: play calling. What is Eric B Enemy done to kind
- 27:19Speaker 4: of revamp this offense? From everything from helping develop Sam
- 27:23Speaker 4: Howell to helping enhance the run game.
- 27:26Speaker 10: Uh, you know he'd be he completely came in here
- 27:29Speaker 10: and flipped the script. You know, his energy is contagious.
- 27:32Speaker 10: You know, it's easily something to you know, you know,
- 27:35Speaker 10: I want to work for it and want to pick
- 27:36Speaker 10: up for it, like you know, if you're a winner,
- 27:38Speaker 10: what that type of mind sat it's easy to really
- 27:40Speaker 10: you know, listen to him and you know take the
- 27:42Speaker 10: tips and kids that he give you, you know, for success,
- 27:45Speaker 10: and uh, I appreciate you know, everything he's you know,
- 27:48Speaker 10: it's still in me since he's no gutten here, you know,
- 27:50Speaker 10: on and off the field, and you know, we're just
- 27:53Speaker 10: going to continue to make strives in the right direction
- 27:56Speaker 10: of building this thing up.
- 27:59Speaker 1: I want to kind of push that one step further, Brian,
- 28:01Speaker 1: because I've heard multiple players on this offense say he's
- 28:03Speaker 1: made them already this quickly smarter football players.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Is there something that stands out.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Early in a conversation maybe you've had with eb where
- 28:11Speaker 1: you're just like, oh, he knows running backs and I
- 28:14Speaker 1: didn't know this about the position already, this has made
- 28:16Speaker 1: me a better back.
- 28:18Speaker 10: Well, his mind set just so strong, you know, and uh,
- 28:22Speaker 10: he's just he's real big on you know, taking advantage of,
- 28:26Speaker 10: you know, the opportunities that you get, you know, because
- 28:28Speaker 10: you know, because of the short window in his game,
- 28:30Speaker 10: and then it's real and he made sure he give us,
- 28:34Speaker 10: you know, real tips and advice you know, to you know,
- 28:37Speaker 10: just the life of you know, this game, and just
- 28:39Speaker 10: making sure that we take advantage of, you know, every
- 28:43Speaker 10: single opportunity that we get. And uh, you know, I
- 28:45Speaker 10: just let that, you know, kind of stay in the
- 28:47Speaker 10: back of my head. You know, every time I get
- 28:49Speaker 10: an opportunity, I just want to make the most of it.
- 28:52Speaker 4: Brian, you tell you about short window of this game.
- 28:54Speaker 4: You know, you're running back, he plays position. I just
- 28:56Speaker 4: got to get your take on Nick Chubb and when
- 28:58Speaker 4: we saw Monday night and that injury.
- 29:03Speaker 10: Now, I'm a huge fan of Nick Chubb, been watching
- 29:05Speaker 10: him for years.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Uh.
- 29:07Speaker 10: Nick Chubb probably one of the very very few few guys,
- 29:11Speaker 10: especially running backs in the league that you know tape
- 29:14Speaker 10: I watched year round. So tremendous amount of respect for
- 29:19Speaker 10: Nick Chub. You know, I hate hated to see him
- 29:21Speaker 10: go through that. Uh, but you know, it's running back.
- 29:25Speaker 10: You know, running back is a very very scared position,
- 29:28Speaker 10: you know, and going, you know, watching the guy like
- 29:30Speaker 10: Nick Chubb go down with something like that so significant,
- 29:33Speaker 10: it's like, you know, you got so much respect for me.
- 29:36Speaker 10: You just want to see him on the field. You
- 29:37Speaker 10: want to see him be secure. You just want them
- 29:39Speaker 10: to have all the opportunities, you know, in the world.
- 29:41Speaker 10: And uh, I don't want to really get into, like,
- 29:44Speaker 10: you know, what's fair and unfair for the running back position,
- 29:47Speaker 10: because you know, you know, it's something that everybody is,
- 29:50Speaker 10: you know, kind of talking about. But uh, you know,
- 29:53Speaker 10: that's one guy that has a lot of respect for me,
- 29:55Speaker 10: and I wish you know he can you know, recover
- 29:57Speaker 10: and come back from this stronger than ever.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Well, I know your your organization likes to focus on
- 30:04Speaker 1: the run. That makes a running back happy. I think
- 30:05Speaker 1: you've rushed for more first downs than any player in
- 30:08Speaker 1: football so far.
- 30:09Speaker 2: But I want to talk about your quarterback real quick.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Take me inside the huddle during this comeback when Sam
- 30:16Speaker 1: Howe was making his first road start in the NFL.
- 30:19Speaker 2: You guys are down. What was going on in.
- 30:22Speaker 1: The huddle that stood about your stood out about your
- 30:24Speaker 1: young quarterback during this comeback in the second half?
- 30:28Speaker 10: Uh No, what stood out to me the most was.
- 30:30Speaker 10: You know, he never really got beside himself. He knew,
- 30:33Speaker 10: you know, what he needed to do, you know, personally,
- 30:37Speaker 10: you know, to just step up for this team. And uh,
- 30:40Speaker 10: you know, I'm pretty sure every guy in that huddle
- 30:42Speaker 10: was thinking, you know, what they needed to do personally
- 30:45Speaker 10: to you know, help you know, bring this team together.
- 30:47Speaker 10: And uh, you know, Sam, his poise is amazing. You know,
- 30:50Speaker 10: he never really you know, just put his head down,
- 30:53Speaker 10: and uh, he just continued to fight, continue to play.
- 30:56Speaker 10: You know what type of guys he have around him,
- 30:58Speaker 10: what type of play makes he had around him, And uh,
- 31:01Speaker 10: you know, we just stay on the same page, you.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Know, through it all.
- 31:04Speaker 10: You know, even when I'm back against the wall, we
- 31:06Speaker 10: just make sure we're on the same page. And uh,
- 31:08Speaker 10: he's a fighter and I just, you know, I just
- 31:11Speaker 10: love playing with him.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Ranie.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Have the Buffalo Bill's coming up this weekend, and a
- 31:16Speaker 4: lot of folks will probably say, Okay, this is gonna
- 31:18Speaker 4: be the measuring stick game for Washington so far. Tell
- 31:22Speaker 4: us tell us one if you think that's the case,
- 31:24Speaker 4: And two, what type of challenge they present for a
- 31:28Speaker 4: team that thinks, okay, we're really good right now?
- 31:33Speaker 10: Well, you know, They're gonna be real fast to say
- 31:36Speaker 10: it's a measure of stick for us, but it can
- 31:38Speaker 10: be a major of stick for them too. You know,
- 31:39Speaker 10: it's just another week for Yeah, we know you know
- 31:44Speaker 10: what type of team it is. You know, we know that,
- 31:46Speaker 10: you know they're a great team. You know, also, this
- 31:48Speaker 10: won't be the first time we line up against a
- 31:50Speaker 10: great team. So you know, we just gotta you know, prepare,
- 31:53Speaker 10: prepare to win, you know, prepare like you know, like champions.
- 31:56Speaker 10: And uh, I think once we take the field, you know,
- 31:59Speaker 10: we just gonna gonna take them like any other opponent
- 32:02Speaker 10: that we want to beat. And uh we we understand
- 32:04Speaker 10: that they are good. They're going to play hard, you know.
- 32:07Speaker 10: Uh they got some great players over there, and we
- 32:10Speaker 10: just got to play at the top of our game, all.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Right to close this out, Brown, I got a two parter.
- 32:16Speaker 1: You guys have a lot of great players on that
- 32:17Speaker 1: defensive line. You've gone again sitting in practice. We saw
- 32:21Speaker 1: the seven sacks in Denver this past week. Just describe
- 32:24Speaker 1: that group from an opposing offensive players mindset when you
- 32:29Speaker 1: see all of them healthy, all of them coming at you.
- 32:32Speaker 1: And the second part is is the Alabama dynasty over.
- 32:38Speaker 10: Well, I understand.
- 32:41Speaker 2: That front line we got right now.
- 32:43Speaker 10: They relentless, man, A whole bunch of dolls over there
- 32:46Speaker 10: that feed off each other. You know, they feed one
- 32:48Speaker 10: one person get a sack the other one one one
- 32:50Speaker 10: and uh that's a that's a strong group that you know,
- 32:53Speaker 10: easily feed off each other. So you know, I could
- 32:56Speaker 10: just if one word, like in one word, if I
- 32:58Speaker 10: had to describe them, I would just say relentless. Yeah,
- 33:00Speaker 10: our defensive and I love competing against them guys, man,
- 33:04Speaker 10: I love, you know, just practicing against them and just
- 33:06Speaker 10: polishing up my game and just going up against guys
- 33:09Speaker 10: of that caliber to just have me prepared for you know,
- 33:12Speaker 10: every Sunday Alabama.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, what's I feel like we're making up? Are
- 33:21Speaker 2: you nervous?
- 33:22Speaker 10: I'm not nervous at all.
- 33:23Speaker 7: Man.
- 33:24Speaker 2: I didn't like the game.
- 33:26Speaker 10: I lost the game in the season and still played
- 33:28Speaker 10: in the National Championship, you.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Know, Uh, okay, good point thinking over, I.
- 33:32Speaker 10: Just think we were struggling some you know, in some areas,
- 33:35Speaker 10: you know, which is common most you know, all teams struggle,
- 33:39Speaker 10: you know at some point you know where you have
- 33:41Speaker 10: a great team for so long and so many great
- 33:43Speaker 10: players in and out in and out, in and out.
- 33:46Speaker 10: You should expect, you know, at some point, you know
- 33:48Speaker 10: it's gonna kind of you know, hit a hit, a fall.
- 33:51Speaker 10: Like even my last two years in school, they were
- 33:53Speaker 10: saying that we were rebuilding, and I still ended up
- 33:57Speaker 10: playing and you know, two back to back national championships.
- 33:59Speaker 2: One one in a low well pretty good rebuild.
- 34:03Speaker 10: So you know, we could easily say, you know, it's
- 34:07Speaker 10: a rebuilding team again. But hey, if they playing in
- 34:10Speaker 10: the National Championship this year, then are we going to
- 34:12Speaker 10: continue to say, oh, that was just rebuilding. You know.
- 34:16Speaker 4: Hey hey, Brian, okay, hey hold up now, Brian, I'm glad,
- 34:19Speaker 4: I'm glad you. I'm glad you told James that because
- 34:22Speaker 4: you were James with the school Ohio State.
- 34:24Speaker 3: He's coming for you, right.
- 34:25Speaker 4: So he's barking about that buck Eye business, knowing at
- 34:28Speaker 4: the Crimson Tide been ruling the roost.
- 34:31Speaker 2: No, that's not the case. I'm just terrified about my
- 34:33Speaker 2: program right now.
- 34:34Speaker 1: We're not where I want to be either with the
- 34:36Speaker 1: buck Eyes, and we got Notre Dame on Saturday.
- 34:38Speaker 2: I'm nervous.
- 34:39Speaker 10: I think I'm undefeated against the buck guys, and last time, yeah,
- 34:43Speaker 10: you are the last time I played you are the
- 34:48Speaker 10: you know, I think I won that championship that year.
- 34:53Speaker 2: There we go, Brian, Yeah.
- 34:56Speaker 4: Yeah, perfect, beautiful way to close this out. Brian, We
- 34:59Speaker 4: thank you so much. We're joining us here at the
- 35:01Speaker 4: NFL Report. Good luck this weekend against the Bills.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Man, thank you. I appreciate so roasting my Buck. Guys,
- 35:09Speaker 2: that's all right.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Coming up in the NFL before, we're gonna talk about
- 35:11Speaker 1: another former Buck guye in Justin Fields. Brian Baldinger had
- 35:15Speaker 1: a video about him on Twitter that got millions abuse.
- 35:18Speaker 2: We're gonna break that down coming up on the NFL Report, the.
- 35:27Speaker 4: NFL Report giving you the latest, and James Palmer got
- 35:29Speaker 4: some news coming down. And Bryce Young, the Carolina Panthers
- 35:32Speaker 4: rookie quarterback, might not be playing Sunday's that problematic ankle
- 35:37Speaker 4: sneaks up so could be Andy Dalton, a veteran in
- 35:39Speaker 4: the quarterback sneak specialist, going for the Panthers on Sunday. Also,
- 35:43Speaker 4: Cowboys corner Trey Diggs was seeing on crutches after practice Thursday.
- 35:47Speaker 3: He's scheduled to have an MRI exam.
- 35:49Speaker 4: We'll be keeping an eye on his availability for Sunday
- 35:52Speaker 4: as well.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Yeah, let's hope he's all right. That defense is rolling.
- 35:56Speaker 1: And you know who is availability we have now, Steve,
- 35:58Speaker 1: we have Brian Baldinger. I think he lives in that room. Baldy,
- 36:01Speaker 1: I think you lived there, But you live on this
- 36:03Speaker 1: show on Thursdays. I know that you live in this
- 36:05Speaker 1: show on Thursdays. You're coming out with these Baldi breakdowns.
- 36:08Speaker 1: I watch them all and I'm not the only person
- 36:10Speaker 1: that watched the one on Justin Fields, Baldi. I mean,
- 36:13Speaker 1: it's got millions of views already. Steve and I talked
- 36:17Speaker 1: at length about Fields in the start of this show.
- 36:20Speaker 1: I need your take to take this a step further.
- 36:22Speaker 1: I guess my biggest question, Baldi is when you see this,
- 36:25Speaker 1: is it correctible or is it not correctable.
- 36:29Speaker 11: It's correctable, James, It's cricticable because all you have to
- 36:33Speaker 11: do is see the evidence of the opening drive, six plays,
- 36:36Speaker 11: seventy five yards touchdown. You know DJ Moore, Chase Claypool
- 36:40Speaker 11: in the end zone. You know fourth quarter eight plagues
- 36:43Speaker 11: ninety yards right down the field.
- 36:46Speaker 2: So it's correctable.
- 36:47Speaker 11: But what frustrated me and why I posted the video
- 36:51Speaker 11: was I just didn't understand look, that's the very end
- 36:54Speaker 11: of the game.
- 36:54Speaker 8: Shack Beart jumped up from the screen. That stuff can happen.
- 36:57Speaker 11: But what frustrated me he was, what is he What
- 37:02Speaker 11: doesn't he see when he's got great protection and the
- 37:06Speaker 11: Tampa Bay Buccaneers blow the protection and they're basically just
- 37:10Speaker 11: scheming to stop him from running and he should make
- 37:13Speaker 11: the throw because he can make the throw. And that's
- 37:16Speaker 11: what frustrated me. He took seven sacks the other day.
- 37:18Speaker 11: Three of them were on justin field, just holding the
- 37:20Speaker 11: ball and not really knowing what he was looking at.
- 37:23Speaker 11: I believe it's correctable, and I don't think it's just
- 37:27Speaker 11: I'm just gonna play my own style. Like this thing is.
- 37:31Speaker 11: This is precision offense. It's got to be precise. You know,
- 37:34Speaker 11: the defense dictates where you go with the ball, and
- 37:39Speaker 11: not every play that anybody ever calls is the perfect play.
- 37:42Speaker 11: Sometimes you got to make the play right. Sometimes you've
- 37:45Speaker 11: got to fix it at the line of scrimmage. I mean,
- 37:47Speaker 11: all those things are in the hands of a quarterback.
- 37:50Speaker 11: And so I've seen plenty of evidence of justin reading
- 37:53Speaker 11: the field, scanning the field, making the right throw, hitting
- 37:56Speaker 11: Dj Moore time after time, on Sunday with great throws.
- 38:00Speaker 11: We just have to see it more consistently, and we
- 38:02Speaker 11: can't see the freezing of the process behind the line
- 38:07Speaker 11: of spirits like we saw a couple times.
- 38:09Speaker 3: Yeah, balldly, real quick.
- 38:10Speaker 4: I mean just your experience as a player. You know,
- 38:13Speaker 4: you've been with a lot of different quarterbacks. He said
- 38:16Speaker 4: that there's sometimes just too much information and sometimes I
- 38:19Speaker 4: have to play off my instincts.
- 38:20Speaker 3: To go back to your point about instincts.
- 38:22Speaker 4: Can a quarterback get overloaded trying to process things instead
- 38:27Speaker 4: of being instinctial and just getting the ball out from
- 38:30Speaker 4: what he sees.
- 38:31Speaker 11: Oh, without a doubt, Steve, without a doubt. I've seen
- 38:34Speaker 11: plenty of quarterbacks that have had too many voices in
- 38:38Speaker 11: his ear, too many suggestions, too many coaching points. There's
- 38:42Speaker 11: no question it can be an overcoached position. But I
- 38:46Speaker 11: but you know, I see receivers that look awfully frustrated,
- 38:49Speaker 11: you know, when they get their hand in the air
- 38:50Speaker 11: like I'm open. Okay, not always, but sometimes and then
- 38:54Speaker 11: I'm watching like DJ Moore in the middle of the
- 38:57Speaker 11: field give a little clap like let's go, let's let's
- 38:59Speaker 11: get me the ball all And so you know, I
- 39:01Speaker 11: think it's you know, it's it's it's uh, it's it's
- 39:05Speaker 11: a collaboration really amongst players, the coaches and and and
- 39:09Speaker 11: justin and it's it's it's correctable.
- 39:12Speaker 3: It just is.
- 39:13Speaker 11: And so uh, if he feels like he needs to
- 39:17Speaker 11: kind of free himself up from a lot of people
- 39:19Speaker 11: in's ear or the coaching points, all right, but you
- 39:23Speaker 11: can't get too far away from design to plays and
- 39:26Speaker 11: where the ball should go and what the defense is
- 39:28Speaker 11: doing and understanding what the defense is going to dictate
- 39:32Speaker 11: where you go with the balls.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Agression right, go ahead.
- 39:39Speaker 1: I was just gonna say real quick, but there's a
- 39:41Speaker 1: progression of angry receivers. First there's the hand up, then
- 39:44Speaker 1: there's the hand wave, and then when they start jumping
- 39:47Speaker 1: that's when you know, there's massive frustrations that when they
- 39:50Speaker 1: when they start jumping up and down, that's that's that's
- 39:53Speaker 1: when they got to the X level.
- 39:56Speaker 4: You know this, Sunday, Hey and Bald, you know this.
- 40:00Speaker 4: No one could show more frustration than good old Joe
- 40:02Speaker 4: Horn when he.
- 40:03Speaker 3: Wasn't getting the ball real quick.
- 40:06Speaker 2: So let's move.
- 40:07Speaker 4: We're gonna move on where there's where there's no frustration
- 40:11Speaker 4: except for by us because you've got this question, Mark Baldi,
- 40:15Speaker 4: why aren't more teams following the Philadelphia Eagles push push
- 40:20Speaker 4: on short yardage situations where they surround the quarterback in
- 40:23Speaker 4: the cocoon and just push forward.
- 40:27Speaker 11: You know, Steve, I posted something last year when the
- 40:29Speaker 11: Eagles started perfecting this, and I said, every not just
- 40:33Speaker 11: the NFL, college, high school, like everybody should do this.
- 40:36Speaker 11: The rules legal We talked about it in the seminar
- 40:39Speaker 11: of the summer of what how they're officiating the play.
- 40:42Speaker 11: Not many people, not many quarterbacks get deadaloe six one
- 40:45Speaker 11: hundred and fifty pounds like Jalen Hurts does. Now, that
- 40:48Speaker 11: has that kind of power. But I was in Jacksonville
- 40:50Speaker 11: last year. Last week, Steve against Kansas City, first and
- 40:53Speaker 11: goal at the one, they lost four plays on a
- 40:56Speaker 11: silly pitch. On the first play, they never got the
- 40:58Speaker 11: Baldi end zone. Iver Lawrence should be pushed into the
- 41:02Speaker 11: end zone, get some tight ends behind him, get a
- 41:04Speaker 11: running back behind him, and you know, follow Brandon Sheriff
- 41:07Speaker 11: at right guard, Luke fort Nert center and put the
- 41:10Speaker 11: ball on the end zone. Stop fooling around, like everybody
- 41:13Speaker 11: should be doing this right now. The rules are made
- 41:15Speaker 11: for it. Take advantage of the rule. I see too
- 41:17Speaker 11: many teams right now across the board, Steve in short
- 41:21Speaker 11: yards and goal line situations, trying to outthink. I see
- 41:24Speaker 11: teams on fourth and one at the goal lines are
- 41:27Speaker 11: throwing the ball third and one at the goal line,
- 41:30Speaker 11: like get get on with the toush push.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Just take advantage of the rule.
- 41:35Speaker 1: So boy, I want to follow up on that because
- 41:36Speaker 1: it was interesting quote from Andy Reid this season. Already
- 41:40Speaker 1: in this season going, I'm watching all of these short
- 41:42Speaker 1: yardage plays and teams are not very good across the
- 41:45Speaker 1: board and third and one and fourth and one, and
- 41:47Speaker 1: Andy Reid's mind, he said, you know there are actually
- 41:49Speaker 1: one of the teams that has struggled.
- 41:50Speaker 2: With it as well.
- 41:51Speaker 1: We know I was at the game when Patrick Mahomes
- 41:53Speaker 1: dislocates his kneecap. That's just not in Andy Reid's playbook
- 41:56Speaker 1: right now. But when you have I bring him up
- 41:58Speaker 1: because when you have so many different creative offensive minds
- 42:00Speaker 1: across the league that can do so many different things
- 42:03Speaker 1: with their offense, when they see something that, as you're describing,
- 42:07Speaker 1: is so clear cut an advantage, do they just not
- 42:10Speaker 1: take advantage of it? Because of their personnel or they outthink.
- 42:15Speaker 11: Themselves day I'll take themselves, James. This is not this
- 42:19Speaker 11: is something honestly, that you can install on Friday and
- 42:23Speaker 11: operate on Sunday. It's just I mean, it is just
- 42:26Speaker 11: pack it in. You know, the quarterback gets it started,
- 42:29Speaker 11: he's he could give you the signal where he's going straight, right, left,
- 42:32Speaker 11: and then you just get behind him and you get
- 42:34Speaker 11: to keep the momentum going. Like it's just almost I've
- 42:37Speaker 11: talked to defensive coordinators James across the league, like how
- 42:40Speaker 11: difficult this thing is to stop, Like the only thing
- 42:43Speaker 11: you can do is get five guys to submarine below
- 42:47Speaker 11: the offensive lineman and get four guys coming over the top.
- 42:50Speaker 11: And honestly, it's not really a safe play diving over
- 42:53Speaker 11: the top of these piles to try and stop the quarterback.
- 42:57Speaker 11: You're just gonna get these midair collisions that you know,
- 42:59Speaker 11: somebody's probably gonna get hurt if you do it often enough.
- 43:03Speaker 11: We know players, you know, don't have fear about that stuff,
- 43:05Speaker 11: but you know from the outside, there's a fear factor
- 43:09Speaker 11: flying over the top to try to stop this. But
- 43:11Speaker 11: it's a very difficult play to stop. And I just
- 43:14Speaker 11: don't understand why if you're Tennessee with King Henry, like,
- 43:19Speaker 11: let's just have him push Tannehill him behind, like you're
- 43:23Speaker 11: gonna get in the end zone, you're gonna get the
- 43:24Speaker 11: first down.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Yeah, well, tight end Dallas got her to the eagle, said,
- 43:29Speaker 1: if you don't want us to do it, don't let
- 43:30Speaker 1: us have third and one or fourth and one.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Then we won't run the play. If you don't put
- 43:35Speaker 2: us in that situation.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Let's talk about you know, the Browns lose a back
- 43:38Speaker 1: that there's probably not even a need for a push
- 43:41Speaker 1: push on a third and one with Nick Chubb if
- 43:43Speaker 1: he's in your backfield, what do you see now moving
- 43:45Speaker 1: forward with Jerome Ford kind of running that backfield and
- 43:48Speaker 1: they bring in Cream Hunt behind him, Baldy.
- 43:51Speaker 11: You know, Jerome Ford was a fifth round pick last
- 43:54Speaker 11: year from Cincinnati, but he started at Alabama, like that's
- 43:57Speaker 11: where he started his college career and transferred to Cincinnati.
- 44:00Speaker 11: He went to the finals with him.
- 44:01Speaker 3: Like he's a talented back.
- 44:03Speaker 11: You saw him change direction right here and go you know,
- 44:06Speaker 11: basically seventy yards got stopped right at the six inch line.
- 44:10Speaker 11: You see the speed, But I saw him The only
- 44:13Speaker 11: thing I would say, is he took a couple of
- 44:16Speaker 11: plays where he went backwards to go forwards like on
- 44:19Speaker 11: that one. Sometimes that doesn't always work. But he catches
- 44:22Speaker 11: the ball well out of the backfield like he does here.
- 44:24Speaker 11: I'm just a little you know, Texas route hooked up
- 44:26Speaker 11: over the middle, but he pushes the pile like he
- 44:29Speaker 11: does here.
- 44:29Speaker 3: He runs with power.
- 44:31Speaker 11: I mean, I know they signed Kareem Hunt, but I
- 44:34Speaker 11: would say Jerome Ford should certainly get an opportunity to
- 44:37Speaker 11: be the starting back right now in Cleveland. You know
- 44:40Speaker 11: that's Kevin Stefanski's MO. They want to run the ball,
- 44:43Speaker 11: play action, pass off it. Like the lineup front is
- 44:46Speaker 11: really good, especially with Dwan Jones at right tackle. Right now,
- 44:50Speaker 11: they're pretty good up front. So I would expect Jerome
- 44:52Speaker 11: Ford to continue to be the starter and Kareem Hunt
- 44:56Speaker 11: come in and be that change of baseback the way
- 44:58Speaker 11: he was with Nick Chubb.
- 44:59Speaker 4: For Yeah, I believe that Baldi because in the AFC North,
- 45:04Speaker 4: I mean, with the weather and everything, you've got to
- 45:05Speaker 4: have that type of slugger that we saw Ford show
- 45:09Speaker 4: that he was in that game. Speaking of the AFC North,
- 45:12Speaker 4: and I guess the AFC South baldly, you said, and
- 45:15Speaker 4: it's a game match up this weekend the Ravens and
- 45:18Speaker 4: the Colts that Anthony Richardson has a ton of Lamar
- 45:22Speaker 4: in him, and Lamar said the same, listen to this.
- 45:26Speaker 10: You want me to be honest?
- 45:27Speaker 3: Right?
- 45:28Speaker 12: That made me feel old and I'm only twenty six.
- 45:31Speaker 12: Like comparing me himself at CAM it was like, I'm like, dang,
- 45:35Speaker 12: compare yourself to me, and I'm still, you know, young,
- 45:37Speaker 12: But you know, I appreciate stuff like that. And I
- 45:41Speaker 12: did see him a couple of times in college. He
- 45:43Speaker 12: played phenomenon and as his first two games he has to.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Paldi. Richardson's look good in his first two starts.
- 45:51Speaker 4: I mean for a rookie, and you've done some great
- 45:53Speaker 4: breakdowns of him. What have you seen, especially as it
- 45:57Speaker 4: is a kin to Lamar Jackson's.
- 46:00Speaker 11: Well, you know, he ran for two touchdowns in the
- 46:03Speaker 11: first six minutes of the game last week They're up
- 46:06Speaker 11: fourteen to nothing. I mean, like the design of what
- 46:09Speaker 11: Shane Stikeen is doing is beautiful. It's not what Jalen
- 46:11Speaker 11: Hurts has did. But there's an RPO game. I haven't
- 46:14Speaker 11: seen him get flustered yet. Steve like I see a
- 46:17Speaker 11: free hitter, I see a Lua Kwan coming right at
- 46:19Speaker 11: him as a free hitter. In the first week against
- 46:21Speaker 11: Jacksonville Man, he hit Josh downs like he'd been doing
- 46:25Speaker 11: it for the last six years, like nothing looks like
- 46:28Speaker 11: it surprises him, and he plays with incredible poise. I
- 46:31Speaker 11: was so I was disappointed that he only played eighteen
- 46:35Speaker 11: snaps last week because I loved him in Week one.
- 46:38Speaker 11: I love the way he started last week. The concussions,
- 46:40Speaker 11: the concussion Minshew played great. The Colts are. He's much
- 46:45Speaker 11: better at this point than I ever imagined imagining him
- 46:49Speaker 11: to be. Like he's He's played really, really well, and
- 46:52Speaker 11: I think there's a reason to be really optimistic going
- 46:55Speaker 11: forward in Indianapolis.
- 46:56Speaker 3: With Anthony Richardson, Yeah, have we.
- 46:59Speaker 4: All the good stuff up right there as usual. We're
- 47:01Speaker 4: going to see you next Thursday and on Sunday. We
- 47:05Speaker 4: might see more defensive trickery as we're seeing the two
- 47:10Speaker 4: point stance become something used not just on the edges,
- 47:15Speaker 4: but over the center and other places on the field.
- 47:18Speaker 3: James Palmer at more on that. We're back here at
- 47:20Speaker 3: the NFL Report.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Welcome back to the NFL Report.
- 47:28Speaker 1: James Palmer Steve Whitch with you, and Steve say, isn't
- 47:32Speaker 1: what you want to hear during a practice week.
- 47:34Speaker 2: We're taping this on a Thursday.
- 47:36Speaker 1: And Trayvon Diggs signs a big, almost one hundred million
- 47:39Speaker 1: dollar contract in the off season, ends up suffering an
- 47:42Speaker 1: ACL injury in practice, confirmed on the MRI by two
- 47:46Speaker 1: of our insiders, and Rappaport and Tom Pelasero, a massive
- 47:50Speaker 1: blow to a Cowboys defense that now appears will probably
- 47:53Speaker 1: lean even more heavily on that group up front to
- 47:57Speaker 1: give a secondary that's now a little bit thin with
- 47:59Speaker 1: one of the best corners in football a little less
- 48:02Speaker 1: time than they're going to have to cover on the
- 48:03Speaker 1: back end.
- 48:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I did, b Look, the one thing the Cowboys
- 48:07Speaker 4: do have a lot of depth, right, They have a
- 48:08Speaker 4: ton of depth in that secondary, But we know Tredy
- 48:10Speaker 4: Diggs one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
- 48:13Speaker 3: But like you said, what they're doing up front helps
- 48:16Speaker 3: on that back end. And you've done a little study.
- 48:19Speaker 4: On some of the things the trends that the Cowboys
- 48:21Speaker 4: are showing that's helping this defense function as the number
- 48:24Speaker 4: one defense in the NFL after two weeks.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Stee, we have these rare athletes up front. I had
- 48:31Speaker 1: a rare one a while ago when he played in Dallas.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Was DeMarcus Ware Remember when he was on this show
- 48:35Speaker 1: and he told us I'd have to change my game
- 48:38Speaker 1: if I played in today's NFL. Well, we're seeing some
- 48:40Speaker 1: of these guys with freak athletic ability, like Michael Parsons
- 48:44Speaker 1: or Miles Garrett lining up over the center where they
- 48:46Speaker 1: have a distinct advantage standing up. You saw Miles Garrett
- 48:50Speaker 1: crossing them up like AI trying to come and decide
- 48:53Speaker 1: which side he's going to go to and keep the
- 48:55Speaker 1: center guessing. It's reminded me of a conversation I had
- 48:59Speaker 1: back with Jenemi in twenty eighteen when he lost some
- 49:03Speaker 1: of that bend after his microfracture surgery and Romeo Crenell
- 49:05Speaker 1: started lining him up almost Steve with a running start.
- 49:09Speaker 1: He was a middle linebacker moving around finding those gaps
- 49:12Speaker 1: in the front, and it makes it so difficult on
- 49:14Speaker 1: the interior part of the defensive line. You saw Micah
- 49:17Speaker 1: Parsons do it against the Jets, and what did it
- 49:20Speaker 1: do with forced an interception? Because these guys can get
- 49:23Speaker 1: there like that with their athletic ability.
- 49:26Speaker 2: It's really really cool to watch.
- 49:28Speaker 4: Yeah, Jay, A lot of Eve's done that over the
- 49:30Speaker 4: years to take advantage of favorable mismatches. We've got a
- 49:33Speaker 4: favorable match right here with you and I and this
- 49:35Speaker 4: edition of the NFL Report will see you on Monday
- 49:39Speaker 4: after Week three.
