- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Memorial Day. We're recording this today, Memorial Day. We
- 0:03Speaker 1: should be at a barbecue together.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Yeah, we should be eating ribs.
- 0:07Speaker 3: We should be Wait, are you really trying wait, hold on,
- 0:10Speaker 3: let me get this straight going.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Are you really trying not to eat meat nowadays?
- 0:14Speaker 1: I am a pescatarian. I'm trying that out.
- 0:17Speaker 2: When did you become a pescatarian?
- 0:20Speaker 1: I watched this documentary that really got me inspired about
- 0:24Speaker 1: stopping eating animals besides fish.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You sound like my dad. My dad is the same
- 0:30Speaker 2: way right now.
- 0:31Speaker 1: The documentary was it's called the Game Changers. Is that
- 0:35Speaker 1: what it's called? Yes, game changers. So, but I've never
- 0:39Speaker 1: done anything. I love burgers, I love I love all
- 0:41Speaker 1: this shit. We all have eaten our whole lives. But
- 0:44Speaker 1: we have all this time on our hands. Right, It's
- 0:46Speaker 1: like an experimentation time on every front, right, Like you
- 0:49Speaker 1: can experiment with you know, I've been experimenting with all
- 0:53Speaker 1: sorts of things in my life. Is I'm sure a
- 0:55Speaker 1: lot of people have. And one was like, okay, well
- 0:56Speaker 1: let me just try this this during this time to
- 0:59Speaker 1: only be a fish. And I do feel better, I
- 1:02Speaker 1: do feel healthier.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Well that's great, but I know you're I.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Know you're very meat passionate.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Donald.
- 1:08Speaker 3: You know, I'm trying to stay away from the red meat.
- 1:11Speaker 3: That's the hardest thing to stay away from. It's so tasty.
- 1:15Speaker 3: So I've been trying to figure out different ways to
- 1:17Speaker 3: cook a chicken, and I've been doing that a lot lately.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But yeah, you're right.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I do agree that too much meat is bad for you, obviously,
- 1:27Speaker 3: because you know, cholesterol says something about that, blood pressure
- 1:31Speaker 3: says something about that, heart disease, colorectal cancer says a
- 1:36Speaker 3: lot about that, you know what I mean, And that's
- 1:38Speaker 3: when you eat too much red meat, usually or processed foods.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I'm having a hard time getting off of all of
- 1:44Speaker 3: that stuff though.
- 1:44Speaker 2: That's the problem.
- 1:46Speaker 1: But I gotta tell you last night we had a
- 1:48Speaker 1: fake burger.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You had Beyond Burger.
- 1:51Speaker 1: It wasn't one of the fancy ones.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Beyond.
- 1:54Speaker 1: It wasn't beyond it impossible. It was the only two
- 1:56Speaker 1: names I know, and we just got it at a supermarket.
- 1:59Speaker 1: It was a nice a nice brand. I forgot the brand,
- 2:01Speaker 1: but it was amazing. I mean, once you put cheese
- 2:04Speaker 1: on it and all the fixens and your spices, it's great.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But once you put the cheese on it.
- 2:10Speaker 3: You're no longer prescytarian whatever it is that you're tresctarian.
- 2:13Speaker 1: That's yeah, I'm I can eat cheese. I'm just not
- 2:15Speaker 1: eating I'm not eating meat. I'm not eating I'm not
- 2:19Speaker 1: eating any form of meat other than fish.
- 2:20Speaker 2: All right, well should we sing?
- 2:23Speaker 1: You don't seem happy. I want you to get happy.
- 2:26Speaker 1: You seem very dumb if you can't sing unless you're happy.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Donald's very old.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Song, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 2:31Speaker 1: You just you have a furrowed brow.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I am very happy, first of all.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Okay, well let's let me see it. We're about to
- 2:38Speaker 1: bring on Randall Winston, one of the most exciting people.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I'm really excited, but I don't want him to see you.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Better turn that motherfucking bearded frown upside down.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I'm telling you something right now.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Randall Winston is responsible for some of the most happiest
- 2:51Speaker 3: moments of my life.
- 2:52Speaker 2: So I can't wait to have him on.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Okay, well, then count these motherfuckers in.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Five, six, seven, eight, motherfuckers.
- 2:58Speaker 5: Here's some story I'm not show. We made about a
- 3:03Speaker 5: bunch of tips and nurses.
- 3:07Speaker 6: He said he's a stormy neal, so Ganda around here,
- 3:15Speaker 6: Ganda around here.
- 3:17Speaker 7: Sweat me.
- 3:26Speaker 1: There he is? Why is he wearing like a gaming headset?
- 3:34Speaker 4: That's the only headset I can find.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Oh my god, you're so normal.
- 3:37Speaker 2: You're play an Xbox later, buddy.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Did we interrupt you from call of duty? Or are
- 3:44Speaker 1: you flying a chop? Are you flying a chopper anytimes too?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Oh my god, we're so excited to have you on
- 3:54Speaker 2: the show. Yeah, we hear you.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Just awesome. Yes, these are this is my son's gaming
- 3:58Speaker 4: heads I knew it.
- 4:00Speaker 1: By the way, this is gonna be I wish the
- 4:01Speaker 1: audience could see Randel is wearing a gaming headset. But
- 4:05Speaker 1: if you don't play games, picture a helicopter headset, right,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and he's in his beautiful garden and he's wearing his
- 4:13Speaker 1: kids gaming inset.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Well that literally is it? Literally is a game?
- 4:18Speaker 4: Lights up?
- 4:19Speaker 6: Oh?
- 4:19Speaker 2: I love it? I love it. How are you man?
- 4:22Speaker 1: How are you? Randy?
- 4:23Speaker 4: I am fantastic, I mean, of things considered, I'm great.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You know, congratulations on your pickup.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Yes we did.
- 4:32Speaker 3: We didn't get picked up, Randall, but.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I didn't know you didn't get picked up. I'm sorry,
- 4:39Speaker 1: It's all good.
- 4:40Speaker 3: ABC decided not to go further with Emergents, but better news,
- 4:43Speaker 3: ABC decided to go further with Mixed Dish, which is
- 4:47Speaker 3: Randall's show. Now, let me get this straight. Randal, you're
- 4:50Speaker 3: executive producer on the show.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Now that is correct.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Look at you man started.
- 4:56Speaker 1: At rand We gotta go back because Randall's career is
- 4:59Speaker 1: on FA and I think if for people that want
- 5:02Speaker 1: to go into Hollywood, Randall is a really exciting case
- 5:06Speaker 1: of someone that's on Fuego right now.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Well, not only is Antuego. I remember a video. I
- 5:11Speaker 3: don't know how I saw this video, but it was
- 5:13Speaker 3: a video of you pretty much manifesting your destiny, you
- 5:17Speaker 3: know what I mean, saying this is what I want
- 5:19Speaker 3: to do. I want to move to Hollywood. I want
- 5:21Speaker 3: to be a I want to be a big time producer.
- 5:23Speaker 3: And you know, and you're very young in this video too.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I don't know how I saw this video.
- 5:31Speaker 4: It was it was posted by a friend of mine.
- 5:34Speaker 4: It was we were like it was our twenty first
- 5:37Speaker 4: birthday or something like that. This is a girl who
- 5:40Speaker 4: I met on the journey to Los Angeles. We met
- 5:44Speaker 4: at a rest stop in Oklahoma and became life for friends.
- 5:47Speaker 4: We were on our way to come find our dreams.
- 5:50Speaker 4: And she was very into documenting everything and Donald, I
- 5:54Speaker 4: can't believe you saw that. That's that's crazy.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Donald and I are very into well I don't know, Donald,
- 5:59Speaker 1: I think you are, but I'm very pro right now
- 6:02Speaker 1: manifesting your shit and making everything happen. My friend, our friend,
- 6:06Speaker 1: Amanda is missed like whiteboard and writing everything down. And
- 6:10Speaker 1: actually I became friendly with John Legend's manager. I think
- 6:14Speaker 1: I've told you this story Donald, who said that everything
- 6:16Speaker 1: that John Legend has accomplished they put on a whiteboard
- 6:19Speaker 1: when they were kids, like out of out of college,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and they were like writing down, like they were laughing,
- 6:25Speaker 1: like I don't know this many Grammys and cover a
- 6:27Speaker 1: Time magazine and they were just like cracking each other up.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And She's like, every single thing we put on that
- 6:32Speaker 1: whiteboard happened.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, John Legend got an egot.
- 6:36Speaker 1: He's got well, Randall's gonna get a fucking egot, especially
- 6:40Speaker 1: for his acting skills.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Oh boy, here we go.
- 6:42Speaker 1: No, we had to get into it because Donald called
- 6:45Speaker 1: me out to Randall saying that I dissed his work
- 6:48Speaker 1: as Death in the show, and Randall texted me very
- 6:52Speaker 1: upset about his work is death being criticized?
- 6:57Speaker 4: I mean, I think I played the part that was
- 7:00Speaker 4: required of death. And I also, you know, death is
- 7:07Speaker 4: not the only role that they played on Scrubs. You know.
- 7:09Speaker 3: No, you also, well, we haven't gotten to the to
- 7:11Speaker 3: the security guard yet. He hasn't been introduced yet, the
- 7:14Speaker 3: hook the hook handed security guards.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Oh, I forgot that you were the hook handed security guard.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Leonard who had letter Letard, who had tens of fans?
- 7:28Speaker 1: Randall, how many episodes did Leonard do? Do you think?
- 7:31Speaker 4: I don't know exactly how many episodes he did, but
- 7:35Speaker 4: I will tell you this, all fans that wrote to me,
- 7:38Speaker 4: so many people from Men's prison got some sort of
- 7:43Speaker 4: treat assigned script or something from Scrubs.
- 7:46Speaker 3: So you are you aren't able to you weren't you
- 7:48Speaker 3: were able to do it and not get carport tunnel,
- 7:51Speaker 3: is what you're saying, because there's only like tens of them.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Exactly would you really give fan mail?
- 7:58Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, I got like not a.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Lot, but you got more fan mail Leonard or death.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Leonard? For sure?
- 8:11Speaker 2: All right, let's go back to the beginning.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Yes, let's start at the very beginning.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I tried to do that with you manifesting your destiny.
- 8:19Speaker 3: But at some point things changed for you, Like you
- 8:22Speaker 3: lived in New York for a little bit and then
- 8:24Speaker 3: you moved to Los Angeles. Can you just tell us
- 8:26Speaker 3: how it all started and how you got connected with Bill,
- 8:29Speaker 3: and how this became and how this all trans send
- 8:33Speaker 3: it into scrubs.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Yes, the truth is Bill and I met socially first.
- 8:39Speaker 4: As a matter of fact, on scrubs. We kept a
- 8:43Speaker 4: graduation photo in Turk and JD's apartment and told everybody
- 8:47Speaker 4: that was our graduation picture. But we really we met
- 8:52Speaker 4: on the basketball court. I had an I had an
- 8:54Speaker 4: old room, so I had I had driven out from
- 8:58Speaker 4: the Midwest, you know, I kind of trying to find
- 9:01Speaker 4: my dream, got to Los Angeles, snuck onto all the
- 9:05Speaker 4: lots in town, got myself a job, and I started
- 9:09Speaker 4: creating my circle, you know, your chosen family, your la family,
- 9:14Speaker 4: and a guy who was my best friend, who I
- 9:19Speaker 4: lived with, a guy named Greg Malon's who went on
- 9:21Speaker 4: to run friends, and how I met your mother, and
- 9:24Speaker 4: a bunch of other stuff. He and Bill had this
- 9:28Speaker 4: played in this Saturday game and invited me to play
- 9:32Speaker 4: a few times. And that's how that was how I
- 9:36Speaker 4: originally met met Bill. I went from working for a
- 9:42Speaker 4: guy named Gary Dave Goldberg. That was my very first job.
- 9:45Speaker 4: He's the guy who created Family Ties. Yeah. Yeah, he
- 9:49Speaker 4: was amazing. He was an amazing mentor and he had
- 9:52Speaker 4: taken Bill under his wing. So so Gary is in
- 9:57Speaker 4: some ways the reason that we started working together. And
- 10:00Speaker 4: the first show we did together was a show called Champs.
- 10:04Speaker 4: That was the first show we did together and Kevin
- 10:06Speaker 4: Neilan was in it and it was it was DreamWorks
- 10:10Speaker 4: very first TV show.
- 10:12Speaker 3: So that kind of okay, Just to so Kevin Nilan,
- 10:16Speaker 3: who Zach remembers being at the first party we ever
- 10:22Speaker 3: had in our scrubs up. That's why Kevin Nielan was there, Zach.
- 10:26Speaker 3: He wasn't there because he was a fan of the show.
- 10:28Speaker 3: He was there because he worked with Bill and Randall.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Okay, well he may have been a coincidence, but okay,
- 10:34Speaker 1: I'll hear you, okay. Randal v. Froz are you still there?
- 10:40Speaker 1: Oh boy?
- 10:41Speaker 2: And that was when we lost random.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Oh god, what are you drinking there?
- 10:45Speaker 2: Momosa, little Mimosa. Memorial Day, Yeah, buddy.
- 10:50Speaker 1: The think about Memorial Day is it's just another weekday
- 10:52Speaker 1: that you can rationalize it's okay to drink early. Yeah,
- 10:57Speaker 1: in this day and age, it doesn't feel any different.
- 10:59Speaker 1: My girlfriend was like, it's a memorial day. I'm like,
- 11:01Speaker 1: how is that going to be different from any other
- 11:03Speaker 1: day that we're living in hibernation right now?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Well, kids, we can drink. Yeah. The kids don't have
- 11:09Speaker 2: to get on zoom today.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Okay, if you have kids, they don't have to get
- 11:11Speaker 1: on their zoom things.
- 11:13Speaker 3: But but today is a is a day where you know,
- 11:17Speaker 3: my wife looked at me, it was like, you're drinking already,
- 11:19Speaker 3: and I was like, it's it's.
- 11:20Speaker 1: A memorial day.
- 11:23Speaker 2: It's a memorial day.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So did she then join you?
- 11:26Speaker 2: No, she did not. She was like, you're an alcoholic.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I was like, oh shit, be like, baby, it's a
- 11:31Speaker 1: Memorial Day.
- 11:32Speaker 3: And on that note, I'm going upstairs to do my podcast.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Randall says he's resetting the Wi Fi. Oh god, that's
- 11:42Speaker 3: that's that's unfortunate.
- 11:43Speaker 1: You know, we lost all the momentum of blowing this
- 11:45Speaker 1: guy up. We're gonna have to regenerate it.
- 11:47Speaker 2: We're gonna have to regenerate it.
- 11:48Speaker 1: We're gonna have to regenerate our Randall blow up.
- 11:51Speaker 2: He said, fucking Spectrum.
- 11:56Speaker 8: I just had my dad switch off of Spectrum for
- 11:58Speaker 8: the same reason that shit is do do.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Trum is bad. Dan, you don't support no, guys, I
- 12:03Speaker 1: want you to listen. This is a very very technical
- 12:05Speaker 1: man here, and he's saying fuck Spectrum. So if you're
- 12:08Speaker 1: choosing a provider, listen to Dan.
- 12:10Speaker 8: The only way that I found that you get good
- 12:13Speaker 8: internet service is if you just switched from provider to
- 12:16Speaker 8: provider every year or so. Because they don't reward loyalty.
- 12:19Speaker 8: There's no like your bill is reduced, your service is better.
- 12:22Speaker 8: It just gets worse and worse and worse, and they
- 12:24Speaker 8: want to keep getting new customers. So I have gigabit Internet,
- 12:27Speaker 8: a thousand megabytes up and down for seventy five bucks
- 12:30Speaker 8: a month, which is the cheapest Internet I've ever had.
- 12:32Speaker 2: And it's just because I switched.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I What are you using now, Dan? AT and A
- 12:38Speaker 1: T and T All right, Well, guys, you're hearing it
- 12:40Speaker 1: a year first that Dan really recommends AT and T.
- 12:44Speaker 1: It's really about you can work the companies against each other.
- 12:47Speaker 1: If you're constantly quitting one and saying no, fuck off,
- 12:50Speaker 1: you suck, and then they give you a better rate.
- 12:52Speaker 1: So if you have the time, which you do now,
- 12:54Speaker 1: you two can have fancy fast internet like Dan Randall
- 12:58Speaker 1: welcome back, blowing you up. And then you had to
- 13:02Speaker 1: do a Wi Fi problem.
- 13:04Speaker 2: All right, so let's get back into it.
- 13:05Speaker 1: So you let's just jump to in the spirit of time,
- 13:07Speaker 1: let's just keep this moving. You start work on Spin
- 13:10Speaker 1: City with Bill, and you hit it off. You become besties.
- 13:14Speaker 1: You're partying around the city. Your young men in Manhattan, go.
- 13:19Speaker 2: And make it from LA. How did you get from
- 13:21Speaker 2: LA to Manhattan? How did that happen?
- 13:23Speaker 1: Well, we're playing Donald no doubt.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Fuck you man the fight. If I could reach through
- 13:28Speaker 2: this screen right now.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Uh, you know what, it goes back to basketball. We
- 13:34Speaker 4: came off the basketball court one night playing and uh,
- 13:37Speaker 4: Gary and Bill pulled me aside and they said, you know,
- 13:41Speaker 4: we just wrote this pilot.
- 13:43Speaker 8: Uh.
- 13:43Speaker 4: We sent it to uh. We sent it to Michael J.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Fox and they said, there's a character. The mayor is
- 13:50Speaker 4: named after you. I think your mother would be very proud.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Mayor Randall Winston and uhlaid by the great Berry box
- 13:57Speaker 4: work and with the show Gut. We did the pilot,
- 14:01Speaker 4: but Michael was living in New York and said he
- 14:03Speaker 4: would only do this series if we took it to
- 14:05Speaker 4: New York. So that was the opportunity of a lifetime,
- 14:10Speaker 4: you know, change my life. I got the chance to
- 14:12Speaker 4: go to New York. Garry took a select group of
- 14:14Speaker 4: people and Donald you know Sebastians, Do you guys know
- 14:18Speaker 4: Sebastian gents. We moved. We all went to New York
- 14:21Speaker 4: with all excitement, like nobody was over anything. Everybody just
- 14:26Speaker 4: was into going to the city. You were, How old
- 14:30Speaker 4: were you I was? I think I was twenty nine.
- 14:35Speaker 4: I think I turned thirty that year. But Bill was.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Bill's like a year younger than me, and he had
- 14:44Speaker 4: like the first American Express black card, and he would say,
- 14:48Speaker 4: you know, Randall go out and find us in after
- 14:49Speaker 4: hours every Friday. So there'd be lines at these after
- 14:54Speaker 4: ours clubs and they're like, you know, absolutely, we don't
- 14:56Speaker 4: have any room. I'd be like, you got room now, motherfucker.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Now Now I say, I say, I need two cases
- 15:03Speaker 4: of champagne and a private room. And that was just
- 15:06Speaker 4: the beginning.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Right now, I got to tell you something.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Some of my favorite moments, some of the best moments
- 15:13Speaker 3: of my life I've shared with you. Rend you have
- 15:15Speaker 3: been present at some of the most special moments, some
- 15:19Speaker 3: of the most wildest moments, some of the craziest moments
- 15:23Speaker 3: of my life have been with you there.
- 15:27Speaker 4: I love that.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Everything, everything from partying in Vegas to marrying him and
- 15:32Speaker 1: his wife and everything in between, Randall has been there.
- 15:35Speaker 2: He has been there.
- 15:36Speaker 1: How many people have you married, Randall?
- 15:39Speaker 4: U seventeen successful couples? Donald? What I said? I said,
- 15:44Speaker 4: you got to be serious, because everybody I marry stays together?
- 15:47Speaker 2: Right? How many? How many people have gotten divorced?
- 15:50Speaker 4: Zero?
- 15:53Speaker 1: You got a good streak.
- 15:56Speaker 4: I don't have people messing with my streak up now.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Now, Randal, If I'm listening to this, I was preparing
- 16:04Speaker 1: for this, and I thought, if I'm listening to this
- 16:05Speaker 1: and I'm interested in production, but I don't know anything
- 16:08Speaker 1: about it. I see in the credits all the time
- 16:10Speaker 1: a line producer, but I see exec producer, I see
- 16:13Speaker 1: associate producer. I see all these titles. Could you explain
- 16:16Speaker 1: to people that have nothing to do with the business
- 16:17Speaker 1: what a line producer does?
- 16:20Speaker 4: Yes, yes, it is. It's true that the TV credits
- 16:23Speaker 4: are lousy with producers, and usually if the credit is
- 16:28Speaker 4: line producer or produced by that credit is reserved for
- 16:34Speaker 4: the person who is essentially responsible for keeping the train
- 16:38Speaker 4: running on time, making sure that you've got the right
- 16:41Speaker 4: group people in the right place, making sure that the
- 16:44Speaker 4: show is on budget, that it is getting delivered on time,
- 16:49Speaker 4: not just within the time concerts of your time slote,
- 16:51Speaker 4: but delivered the day that it's supposed to be delivered,
- 16:54Speaker 4: you know, sort of soup to nuts. That it starts
- 16:58Speaker 4: with the prep, which is, as it sounds, the paring
- 17:01Speaker 4: of the show. When you first get a little bit
- 17:03Speaker 4: of information about the about the series and each episode,
- 17:06Speaker 4: you know, you start to break it down with your team.
- 17:09Speaker 4: You know, how many actors are we going to need,
- 17:11Speaker 4: do we need to build sets? Are we going out anywhere?
- 17:14Speaker 4: And what is it going to take? And I think
- 17:17Speaker 4: that job at its best is a negotiator and a translator.
- 17:22Speaker 4: You know, that's somebody who you know, oftentimes it was
- 17:26Speaker 4: between I'm working between Bill on scrubs, between Bill who
- 17:32Speaker 4: created the show, and the studio and the network. So
- 17:35Speaker 4: everybody's getting what they need and even when they're not
- 17:40Speaker 4: speaking the same language, or figure out what the best
- 17:44Speaker 4: thing to accomplish what's in the script is can be
- 17:49Speaker 4: accomplished within the box that's been built.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and the line bruisers. Also, if you think about it,
- 17:55Speaker 1: the keeper of the purse in a sense that when
- 17:58Speaker 1: you're directing or show running, you will often think, oh,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I think we should I wrote this big scene. It'd
- 18:04Speaker 1: be great to shoot it in this amazing restaurant. And
- 18:06Speaker 1: then I want to get a crane outside that's gonna
- 18:08Speaker 1: come down here, and then it'd be cool if it
- 18:10Speaker 1: was raining outside. This is when the line producer starts
- 18:14Speaker 1: to sweat, when we start to go, wait, we need rain,
- 18:17Speaker 1: need rain, every every time.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Every time Zach got a directing assignment, before there was
- 18:23Speaker 4: even a script, he could come here and say, I
- 18:24Speaker 4: need a crane exactly exactly.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I don't even know what the fucking script says, but
- 18:29Speaker 1: I'm gonna need a big ass cran. But so it's
- 18:32Speaker 1: the line producer's job, almost like a parent, to be like, look,
- 18:35Speaker 1: you use the dollar and you got your candy bar.
- 18:38Speaker 1: You should have saved it and you could have gotten ice.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Cream, yes, right, you could have. You could have one
- 18:43Speaker 4: big thing or two little things right right.
- 18:47Speaker 1: And a lot of times it's negotiation, like you like, hey,
- 18:49Speaker 1: you know they're keeper of the money. But in terms
- 18:51Speaker 1: of the money, it's not just the camera gear, but
- 18:53Speaker 1: how many crew, how many extras are you're gonna be
- 18:55Speaker 1: able to afford? Are you gonna be able to do
- 18:57Speaker 1: any overtime on? All of that is off into the
- 19:00Speaker 1: releaseship I often have with the line producer. As they
- 19:02Speaker 1: say it, think of it like a Chinese food menu,
- 19:05Speaker 1: in that you're choosing from a myriad of things that
- 19:08Speaker 1: you can have, but you can't exceed that budget. So
- 19:11Speaker 1: if you do want a big ass crane, then maybe
- 19:13Speaker 1: you can't have as many background at the wedding.
- 19:17Speaker 4: It's so funny that you say that. I oftentimes it
- 19:20Speaker 4: crossed my career have literally made a Chinese menu for
- 19:23Speaker 4: directors and producers, you know, because you inevitably get to
- 19:27Speaker 4: a point and Bill and I used to have, you
- 19:29Speaker 4: know something back then it was like the thousand dollars deal,
- 19:34Speaker 4: which was once we had locked the budget, he was
- 19:38Speaker 4: not allowed to bring me any problems that cost more
- 19:41Speaker 4: than one thousand dollars. Like I could figure it out,
- 19:43Speaker 4: you know, if it was a thousand or under. But
- 19:46Speaker 4: you know, you can't be adding stuff once we're once
- 19:49Speaker 4: we started rolling.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Now on screen back in the day, we would do
- 19:52Speaker 1: a lot of overtime, which which now people don't really
- 19:55Speaker 1: do anymore, right, I mean, on your jobs now, are
- 19:58Speaker 1: people pretty much keeping it to twelve hours these days?
- 20:01Speaker 4: It depends, really, I mean for the for the most part, yes,
- 20:04Speaker 4: but a lot has changed. You know. We did for
- 20:06Speaker 4: a big chunk of that show a true single camera show,
- 20:09Speaker 4: which is almost all shows have more than one camera
- 20:12Speaker 4: rolling at the time now, so you can get more
- 20:14Speaker 4: work done within the hours you can get you know,
- 20:17Speaker 4: for those who do people know that just been single
- 20:20Speaker 4: and multi like usually on the single camera show, you're
- 20:23Speaker 4: getting one angle at a time, shooting one actors close up,
- 20:26Speaker 4: and then you turn around and get the other actor,
- 20:27Speaker 4: and the more actors in a scene, you know, the
- 20:29Speaker 4: more times you're turning, And if you have multiple cameras,
- 20:33Speaker 4: then you can get multiple shots. But on a show
- 20:37Speaker 4: like Mixed Dish, you know, or you know, American Housewife
- 20:42Speaker 4: or any show that's got a family, you know, family
- 20:44Speaker 4: show as opposed to community, you're up against kid hours.
- 20:47Speaker 4: So those shows in particular are held to a bricter standard. Hoowers.
- 20:51Speaker 3: I'm gonna be honest with you, I love it when
- 20:53Speaker 3: kids are on the show now and you're working the
- 20:54Speaker 3: show because you're not going past twelve hours. Dude, you
- 20:57Speaker 3: might not even do eight hours that day, you know
- 20:59Speaker 3: what I mean?
- 21:00Speaker 2: I love it.
- 21:01Speaker 3: I love so I did Emergence this uh this last
- 21:05Speaker 3: year didn't get picked up ABC.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 21:07Speaker 4: You were great in it.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Donald, by the way, you were great in that show.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I think we should pour some out for Emergence of Emergence.
- 21:15Speaker 3: But I remember we had two very young ladies on
- 21:18Speaker 3: the show and they were in school and once they
- 21:21Speaker 3: showed up to set, we had the clock was ticking.
- 21:24Speaker 3: We had eight hours to get them done or they
- 21:26Speaker 3: would they turned into a pumpkin yea, And so I
- 21:33Speaker 3: used to love that.
- 21:33Speaker 2: It would be like, are the kids working today? They'd
- 21:35Speaker 2: be like yeah, and I'd be like, great.
- 21:36Speaker 3: That means I'm done before you know, I'm done before
- 21:38Speaker 3: the sun goes down. Is when the kids weren't working
- 21:41Speaker 3: that you were like, oh my god, I'm gonna be
- 21:43Speaker 3: here forever.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Well, random, you see kids on.
- 21:46Speaker 3: There, you can make it right right, You'd be like,
- 21:48Speaker 3: I can make that eight o'clock movie tonight.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Randall, you and I always got along so well. You know,
- 21:53Speaker 1: sometimes the relationship between a director and a line producer
- 21:57Speaker 1: could be contentious because the director feels like, oh, you're
- 22:00Speaker 1: taken away. You're not you're not working with me, you're
- 22:01Speaker 1: not making it, you're not helping me realize all the
- 22:04Speaker 1: things I want to do. Of course, the line producer
- 22:06Speaker 1: has a stressful job. You're like, dude, you're killing me.
- 22:08Speaker 1: You're so over budget, what the hell are you talking about.
- 22:10Speaker 1: But but when the two are friends and they feel like, hey,
- 22:13Speaker 1: let's work it out, then then then it never gets contentious.
- 22:16Speaker 1: But of course sometimes when people don't get along, the
- 22:19Speaker 1: line producer and the director don't always like each other.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Well, I think that, uh, it has been to the
- 22:26Speaker 4: great benefit of my career in general. Part of it
- 22:28Speaker 4: is just I think the way that I like to
- 22:30Speaker 4: work is that the goal is to be symbiotic. Like
- 22:33Speaker 4: you know, when people think that it's contentious, it is contentious,
- 22:36Speaker 4: but you know, we're all rowing in the same direction.
- 22:38Speaker 4: You want, you want a great show, you want and
- 22:40Speaker 4: comedies in particular, you know, like I think about the episode,
- 22:44Speaker 4: not it's the episode to day, but your episode when
- 22:48Speaker 4: you when you go into the puddle and you see, uh,
- 22:52Speaker 4: what was.
- 22:55Speaker 1: A sea monster? Do you say? Sea monster? It was
- 22:58Speaker 1: not a sea monster random named Julian.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Julian.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I love that you said sea monsters. What was the
- 23:07Speaker 1: sea monster's name?
- 23:10Speaker 4: So that's a perfect example of that script had so
- 23:15Speaker 4: much in it. But that was the biggest joke in
- 23:18Speaker 4: the show. And you know, we had to call the
- 23:21Speaker 4: city and get Diggler and it was the first time
- 23:23Speaker 4: I got to use a jackhammer, and we're like digging
- 23:25Speaker 4: holes in the parking lot and creating a swimming pool
- 23:28Speaker 4: that we're gonna have to fill in. But but the
- 23:31Speaker 4: question was, you know, is this one of the funniest
- 23:35Speaker 4: things in the script? What what what are we gonna
- 23:37Speaker 4: give up or combined so that we can keep that
- 23:40Speaker 4: and that trusting relationship, you know, with with with the actor,
- 23:44Speaker 4: with the director, with the writers, you know, builds that
- 23:48Speaker 4: thing that you're.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Talking and Renald, you're the kind of person that was
- 23:51Speaker 1: like so on board. You'd be like, oh my god,
- 23:53Speaker 1: we have to figure it out.
- 23:54Speaker 2: We have to figure out a way.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I know because I think that I think that gag,
- 23:58Speaker 1: which involved building two different small swimming pools to code
- 24:02Speaker 1: because the city was not going to let anyone not
- 24:04Speaker 1: do it to code, was one of the most expensive
- 24:06Speaker 1: gags in Scrubs history.
- 24:07Speaker 4: As I recall, Yes it was, Yes, it was very expensive.
- 24:12Speaker 2: But that's you're right, Zach. That's a very important point.
- 24:16Speaker 3: If you have a line producer who's game, and it's like,
- 24:19Speaker 3: I can figure this out. If you work with me,
- 24:22Speaker 3: we can figure this out. You're gonna get some of
- 24:25Speaker 3: the best stuff, you know what I mean.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Of course, of course I was so weirried about Randall
- 24:28Speaker 1: was he wasn't you know some of these guys and
- 24:30Speaker 1: gals are sitting in office and they're rolling your eyes
- 24:32Speaker 1: when you walk in. Randon was out there with the
- 24:34Speaker 1: jackhammer being like, I can't believe o' building.
- 24:36Speaker 4: The tay totally true?
- 24:46Speaker 1: All right, should we get into the episode. Let's get
- 24:48Speaker 1: into the episode. So Randal, this one is supersized. Let's
- 24:52Speaker 1: talk about that. Very rare. Most episodes thus far in
- 24:55Speaker 1: the show are been twenty two minutes without commercials. This
- 24:58Speaker 1: one is twenty eight, which is a bit leap to supersize. Right.
- 25:02Speaker 4: It was a big It was a big issue at
- 25:03Speaker 4: the time the show with the pizza clock as we
- 25:07Speaker 4: as we called it. But the network was very contemptus
- 25:11Speaker 4: about this episode and they did not rerun it. Again
- 25:14Speaker 4: in certainly not that season, and I don't think for
- 25:18Speaker 4: years because being supersized and it's a it's a very
- 25:24Speaker 4: thoughtful episode, you know, very emotional goes inside where where
- 25:28Speaker 4: the characters are. And I think at the time, you know,
- 25:31Speaker 4: we were still in season one and they wanted it
- 25:33Speaker 4: to just to be you know, more JD falling.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, they were like, what are you doing this
- 25:40Speaker 1: weird documentary style interludes? I mean, where's JD running into
- 25:43Speaker 1: a wall? And you know, but it's a great episode.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I just want to say. Written by Gabrielle Allen and
- 25:50Speaker 1: directed by Lawrence Trilling, who became one of our favorites
- 25:54Speaker 1: early on. He then went on to do Pushing Daisies
- 25:58Speaker 1: and Parenthood and I just googled now that he's on Goliath.
- 26:03Speaker 1: But super talented guy.
- 26:05Speaker 2: I think Lawrence Trilling and I did Felicity together.
- 26:07Speaker 1: He did?
- 26:08Speaker 4: You did?
- 26:08Speaker 1: He did? Were we ever on Alias?
- 26:10Speaker 4: Done? No?
- 26:11Speaker 2: I was never on Alias?
- 26:12Speaker 1: Okay, well he also did Alias, but yeah, he directed
- 26:15Speaker 1: Young Donald Faison and Felicity.
- 26:17Speaker 4: He's a really great guy, really fun, good director. And
- 26:21Speaker 4: Gabby got I love her.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Good team, great team, and I just thought there's a
- 26:28Speaker 1: lot of style to this. So so there became this
- 26:30Speaker 1: convention a few conventions. There's the pizza clock thing if
- 26:33Speaker 1: you look down at the pizza guys, in case you
- 26:36Speaker 1: didn't notice, the idea was that it was mimicking a clock.
- 26:39Speaker 1: And so as the episode is cutting between that one
- 26:43Speaker 1: night of Saturn and I in bed and then back
- 26:45Speaker 1: to the few weeks that follow us trying to date,
- 26:49Speaker 1: whenever it cuts back, the pizza's trying to look like
- 26:52Speaker 1: a clock from that night. So there's that sort of gag,
- 26:56Speaker 1: the timeline shake up, and then there's these documentary stop
- 27:00Speaker 1: shaky cam, grainy film as though we're all being interviewed
- 27:04Speaker 1: for a psychologist project on why people become doctors?
- 27:09Speaker 3: Right, all right, okay, well that's not I thought that
- 27:13Speaker 3: was the next episode, but okay.
- 27:15Speaker 1: No, that's my bed banter. And beyond that's inter cutting
- 27:19Speaker 1: Saren I and our big epic fuck fest for lack
- 27:23Speaker 1: of a better term, I gotta.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Tell you something, man, no miss that.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Let's go back because are you said the word, and
- 27:30Speaker 3: now I'm gonna now we can talk about it. I
- 27:32Speaker 3: guess I missed those days. I missed the days when
- 27:35Speaker 3: it was just sex all day. You know before kids,
- 27:39Speaker 3: when you could just bone all day, then go out
- 27:43Speaker 3: to dinner that night and then bone some more. My
- 27:47Speaker 3: wife and I, you know what, we gotta make an
- 27:49Speaker 3: appointment now and it.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Sucks, isn't in your cow?
- 27:53Speaker 2: Dude, I'll be like it.
- 27:55Speaker 3: You think it's a joke, and a lot of stand
- 27:57Speaker 3: up comics have made this joke, but it's real.
- 27:59Speaker 2: You'll be like, how about sex Thursday? Can we do Thursday?
- 28:04Speaker 1: I'm having my hair.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Done right, No, no, no, no, no no. The kid's
- 28:07Speaker 3: got zoom all day. I'm gonna be exhausted by eight o'clock.
- 28:10Speaker 3: There's no way. And Ozark comes on. I gotta watch Ozark?
- 28:15Speaker 1: Okay, Well, Jason Bateman, Jason Bateman is stealing your sex night.
- 28:19Speaker 3: Jason Bateman is fucking it up for me right now.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Dude.
- 28:23Speaker 2: I hear the shows that the good looking man.
- 28:26Speaker 3: I hear the show's great, but damn you, Jason Bateman.
- 28:29Speaker 3: I just wish he would get through the show already.
- 28:31Speaker 3: I just missed those days. I missed the days where
- 28:34Speaker 3: it was like and not.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Granted.
- 28:35Speaker 3: I love my children and I love having them in
- 28:38Speaker 3: my life, but I just missed the days of freaking
- 28:41Speaker 3: waking up boning, going to Hugo's.
- 28:45Speaker 2: To get breakfast.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Or brunch, right, brunch, whatever it is, coming back home
- 28:52Speaker 3: and being like, well, what do you want to do?
- 28:54Speaker 2: Well, we haven't fucked in like five hours, we might
- 28:56Speaker 2: as well fuck again.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Perfect Donald, I am sitting outside looking longingly at my
- 29:03Speaker 4: blackout shutters, and how will you to use them? So
- 29:06Speaker 4: much more?
- 29:07Speaker 2: Right?
- 29:07Speaker 4: Just like crank it down, black out the bedroom and.
- 29:12Speaker 2: And do what you gotta do right them days is
- 29:15Speaker 2: over them? Days?
- 29:16Speaker 1: Is you guys are really doing a great ad for
- 29:19Speaker 1: having children right now?
- 29:21Speaker 2: No, you should do it. It's great, It's wonderful.
- 29:25Speaker 1: As you both drink your white claw.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Now.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Elliott has said in previous episodes that she's never had
- 29:32Speaker 1: an orgasm, and she said that she doesn't like sex.
- 29:35Speaker 1: So is JD the first person to not only bring
- 29:40Speaker 1: her to orgasm but show her the wondrous world of
- 29:43Speaker 1: epic sex days?
- 29:45Speaker 2: I'm sure you would like to think so, I think.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Yes, I'm not JD. Donald, I'm Zach Braff, but I'm
- 29:52Speaker 1: character of JD. Probably was good in bed.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Well, you know, in the beginning of it all, JD
- 29:58Speaker 3: was kind of a sucker when he's like he's almost
- 30:00Speaker 3: let her walk out of the house, and she was
- 30:03Speaker 3: obviously very much into jd.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Well, I don't know, dude, I disagree. I was watching
- 30:09Speaker 1: it with fresh eyes and I was thinking I couldn't
- 30:11Speaker 1: read where she was. Was she like, hey, I should go?
- 30:15Speaker 1: And then you know you know what that's like back
- 30:17Speaker 1: in the day.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Do I hate that shit? I hate that shit? Why
- 30:20Speaker 3: to test? Why I gotta be tested for? How come
- 30:23Speaker 3: you can't just be like, you know what, maybe, uh,
- 30:26Speaker 3: this was a mistake.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Was it a mistake though? Or did you know what
- 30:29Speaker 2: I mean?
- 30:30Speaker 3: Like I remember saying to my wife when she was
- 30:32Speaker 3: my girlfriend, like, you know, I don't know, I don't
- 30:35Speaker 3: know if this is if this is working out, you
- 30:38Speaker 3: know what I mean, and her being.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Like, you don't.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Wait a second, this is the best thing that's ever
- 30:46Speaker 3: happened to you. What do you mean you don't know
- 30:47Speaker 3: if this is working out? Like that was real talk.
- 30:50Speaker 3: The fact that Jad almost had her out the door
- 30:53Speaker 3: before he was before she turned around and was like, yo,
- 30:56Speaker 3: just say you want me to stay and stop being
- 30:58Speaker 3: a sucker, stop being a a little punk about this.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Just say you want me to stay, and I'll stay
- 31:04Speaker 3: and we can go have sex again, and then he's
- 31:06Speaker 3: finally like, will you stay? She's like, yeah, you gotta
- 31:09Speaker 3: pay for that though, because I almost will.
- 31:11Speaker 1: But don't you remember back in the day when you weren't,
- 31:13Speaker 1: when you weren't in such a long term relationship, when
- 31:16Speaker 1: something's new and you're kind of insecure about it, You're like,
- 31:19Speaker 1: did this person have as good of fun as I did?
- 31:21Speaker 1: I don't want to be the one who put I
- 31:23Speaker 1: don't want to put my one. I don't want to
- 31:24Speaker 1: be the one who puts myself out there and and
- 31:26Speaker 1: and gets dissed. Like you're you're You're in a very
- 31:29Speaker 1: vulnerable state. You're like, I kind of like this person,
- 31:31Speaker 1: do they like me?
- 31:32Speaker 2: You know?
- 31:33Speaker 4: Well did I? Ja? Do you? The character just wasn't
- 31:35Speaker 4: he in the friend zone a couple episodes before that? Yeah?
- 31:38Speaker 2: Yeah they were. They were friend zoned.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Yeah, like, uh, maybe seven episodes before he gets friend
- 31:44Speaker 3: zoned and.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Then he and then we gotta go to break. We'll
- 31:47Speaker 1: be right back with the legendary Randall Winster.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Random where instand is. We're very excited.
- 32:05Speaker 1: We're very excited Randall's here. We're talking about sex. JD
- 32:08Speaker 1: and Elliott have an epic epic twenty four hours of sex,
- 32:13Speaker 1: and it seems that JD has found a way to
- 32:16Speaker 1: bring Elliott all the way to the Promised Land because
- 32:19Speaker 1: she seems to be really enjoying sex.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Well, the fact that they have it like six or
- 32:23Speaker 3: seven times is ridiculous. And she even brings up, I'm
- 32:25Speaker 3: gonna need a vagina transport.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Yeah, she says, She's said you need a giant transplant,
- 32:28Speaker 1: which is a very funny fantasy cutting to the guys.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Running through Go Do Go Bucks box.
- 32:38Speaker 4: It's a cooler. Randall was that they should have done
- 32:42Speaker 4: the song vagainaa Bucks.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Randall was vagina transplant something that anyone was worried about
- 32:47Speaker 1: getting through the sensors, because it seems pretty pretty risque
- 32:50Speaker 1: to have a vagina in a box.
- 32:53Speaker 4: Yes, I remember there being like some conversation about I
- 32:58Speaker 4: can't remember whether it was whether it was a Chris
- 33:00Speaker 4: But the great thing about Scrubs was that there was
- 33:03Speaker 4: always something else to point at, like, you know, another
- 33:06Speaker 4: red herring. I was like, well, they have a vaian
- 33:08Speaker 4: in the box, but he says, dick three times two
- 33:11Speaker 4: pages later, we'll get rid of that and let us
- 33:13Speaker 4: keep a giant.
- 33:14Speaker 1: So part of Randall's job was was being Bill's liaison
- 33:17Speaker 1: to the studio. I mean, like, listen, guys, it's just
- 33:20Speaker 1: one vagina in a box. We're not gonna have vaginas
- 33:23Speaker 1: in boxes every week.
- 33:27Speaker 4: And and the and the great thing about about the
- 33:30Speaker 4: h the working with the person. There was a woman
- 33:35Speaker 4: I can't remember if this was Sandy Christmas, it was
- 33:37Speaker 4: this Sandy Christmas. It was this very sweet woman who
- 33:41Speaker 4: used to have these conversations with So I'd get on
- 33:43Speaker 4: the phone and she'd be like, now, Randall, I back
- 33:45Speaker 4: to vagina in the bull and you know, and then
- 33:51Speaker 4: you later say, penis you know, do we have to
- 33:54Speaker 4: have all of that in the show? Yeah?
- 33:56Speaker 1: And what's funny is they'll often give you they'll often
- 33:59Speaker 1: give you a sheet of all their objections and it's
- 34:01Speaker 1: a negotiation, and then even when you get it through,
- 34:04Speaker 1: they'd be like, Okay, we're fine with the vagina in
- 34:06Speaker 1: the box, please do not show a vagina in a box.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Like even shit, You're like, really, guys, you had to
- 34:14Speaker 1: write that on the paper, like you think we were
- 34:16Speaker 1: gonna cut to a vagina on for NBC in the box.
- 34:19Speaker 4: And sometimes they say sometimes they say stuff and you're thinking,
- 34:22Speaker 4: oh damn, you're weight dirtier than I thought. That is
- 34:26Speaker 4: not what we meant. This is a true story. We
- 34:32Speaker 4: had to go into the effects visual effects and adjust
- 34:37Speaker 4: Donald scrubs in a particular scene because they thought we're
- 34:39Speaker 4: seeing too much of a bob.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Oh, that is how we do, Dan, how about thunder
- 34:46Speaker 1: and we do. Let's have some thunders to plaster as
- 34:50Speaker 1: applause from my junk and then Dan, if you wouldn't
- 34:55Speaker 1: mind put them?
- 34:57Speaker 4: That was I used to do a Loma at the
- 34:59Speaker 4: t and most of my yes inspired me to just
- 35:02Speaker 4: go mm hm.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Whenever Nurse Roberts couldn't be at the table, read Randa
- 35:08Speaker 1: would would play her and his favorite part was doing her.
- 35:11Speaker 3: M speaking of speaking of Aloma, Holy cow, she's amazing
- 35:16Speaker 3: in this episode, very funny.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Every one of her lines lands hard.
- 35:21Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 35:22Speaker 2: White boys? Uh you mean it was a secret.
- 35:25Speaker 3: All of that stuff, everything that everything that she said
- 35:29Speaker 3: in this episode, I laughed out loud.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Now let's get rid of into it right away, you know.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Let's you know, the janitor sees Aloma and she sees him,
- 35:39Speaker 1: and she looks at him like, get the fuck out
- 35:42Speaker 1: of my way, and Randall. Bill is still hanging onto
- 35:45Speaker 1: his his his dream that the Janitor was only seen
- 35:49Speaker 1: by JD in season one, and we are Donald and
- 35:53Speaker 1: I are detectives that are quickly proving him wrong in
- 35:56Speaker 1: every other episode.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Yes, yes, I was. I never bought into that, that
- 36:00Speaker 4: that he was a figment of JD's imagination. It's mister snuff. Yeah, yeah,
- 36:06Speaker 4: I mean, and I remember he had because there's some
- 36:09Speaker 4: episodes later. I remember an episode I directed where he
- 36:12Speaker 4: has a group of benchmen played by our Grip team,
- 36:15Speaker 4: you know, and they are all in it.
- 36:19Speaker 3: With him, and isn't his his side He has two sidekicks,
- 36:24Speaker 3: Troy and Randall.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Right, yeah, Randall.
- 36:27Speaker 3: I remember Randall played by Martin, played by Martin.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Martin, who was also in Oz the Great and Powerful
- 36:33Speaker 1: with me, and he was also in Pirates of the Caribbean. Yes,
- 36:40Speaker 1: let's talk about Colleco Vision, which comes up at seven
- 36:42Speaker 1: twenty one. Did you have Collecovision either one of you?
- 36:45Speaker 2: I did not.
- 36:45Speaker 3: My friend had Calleco Vision, and I remember colleco Vision
- 36:48Speaker 3: being so awesome because the video games looked exactly like
- 36:51Speaker 3: they look in the arcade. So if you had Donkey
- 36:53Speaker 3: Kong it looked like Donkey Kong from the Arcade.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought that was you had first.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Do you remember that game?
- 37:00Speaker 2: I don't. I don't remember the Smurf Well, if.
- 37:02Speaker 1: You were interested in video games, please go. I'm sure
- 37:04Speaker 1: on YouTube they can play you the theme music from
- 37:08Speaker 1: Smurfs on Cleacovision. And that jam was fire?
- 37:11Speaker 2: Was it? La la la la la la la la
- 37:15Speaker 2: la la.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Come on?
- 37:16Speaker 9: That was the dope ship La la la la la
- 37:19Speaker 9: la la la la.
- 37:21Speaker 1: La la Ahead.
- 37:22Speaker 4: Let me.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Let's put it this way. If jay Z can make
- 37:25Speaker 3: a song from Hard Knock Life.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Yes, dude, do that again and I'll kick in my
- 37:30Speaker 1: beat box and we got a jam halfway there.
- 37:33Speaker 9: Hey, la la la la la la la la la
- 37:42Speaker 9: la la la la la la la la la la
- 37:46Speaker 9: la la.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Dam And you're gonna have to line that up with
- 37:50Speaker 1: some delay, but we I think it's fire, and I
- 37:52Speaker 1: think we can beat a Hard Knocked Life.
- 37:56Speaker 4: You you did me that donald On set you to
- 38:00Speaker 4: do Transformers as a dude.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Late Neil Diamond, Neil Diamond singing Transformers. I thought I
- 38:07Speaker 3: did it already, But if I haven't, if you missed
- 38:09Speaker 3: it to Transformers more.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Than meets the eye.
- 38:16Speaker 10: Keep going, keep going, bud face their battles to destroy
- 38:22Speaker 10: the evil forces of the Decepticons.
- 38:29Speaker 1: By meay Neil Diamond's your best impersonation. You also do
- 38:32Speaker 1: a pretty good uh, I don't know how much.
- 38:36Speaker 3: My Well, you do a better version of Aaron Neville
- 38:38Speaker 3: than I do. Mine's trash that maybe, yeahs is way
- 38:51Speaker 3: better than mine, way better than mine.
- 38:53Speaker 4: There you go.
- 38:54Speaker 1: That's the extent of our impressions. Gleco Vision great game system.
- 38:57Speaker 1: I felt like a baller because I had it, and
- 38:59Speaker 1: uh uh you know, I remember the control was like
- 39:02Speaker 1: it was like a long rectangle and then there was a.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Circle on the bottom. Yeah, not to be confused.
- 39:07Speaker 1: With in television, which I didn't have.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Or in television. Wow was it in television? It was Kalico.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Vision started with the Atari twenty six hundred. I remember
- 39:18Speaker 1: that everybody had that.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and then there was Vision.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Go ahead, Randall, I feel like the guy with the
- 39:24Speaker 1: gaming heads that you weigh in.
- 39:29Speaker 4: But this makes me said one hundred years old. I
- 39:31Speaker 4: am currently doing a puzzle during COVID that is all
- 39:36Speaker 4: of the original video games Atari and like, yeah, so it's.
- 39:41Speaker 1: I need that puzzle. We we got a Van Gos
- 39:45Speaker 1: Starry Night, and we're not even getting anywhere near to
- 39:47Speaker 1: starting it. But I feel like if it was the
- 39:48Speaker 1: old game consoles, we've had it done already.
- 39:51Speaker 4: I'm sending it to you.
- 39:52Speaker 2: There's an Alf mentioned in this show.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Alf.
- 39:56Speaker 2: I was a huge fan of Alf when I.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Too, Max, Right, what do you doing out?
- 40:03Speaker 3: The puppet from out of space who loved to eat cats?
- 40:07Speaker 1: I remember being a little kid and the trailer teaser
- 40:10Speaker 1: for ALF came on and I remember being a little kid,
- 40:12Speaker 1: my first film critic going that looks so stupid. Cut
- 40:16Speaker 1: to me loving Alf, like having alf stuffed animals?
- 40:20Speaker 4: What was not to love about ALF? I visited the
- 40:23Speaker 4: ALF set, you did, I remember? Yes?
- 40:25Speaker 1: That was it raised up so they could have a puppeteer.
- 40:28Speaker 4: Yes, And it was like it was. It wasn't at
- 40:30Speaker 4: a real stage. It was at uh an, a warehouse
- 40:33Speaker 4: in Culver City.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Is I pall? Max Wright, who was who played the father,
- 40:37Speaker 1: who was an accomplished theater actor and Shakespearean actor and
- 40:41Speaker 1: genius actor all around fucking hated it. I think that's
- 40:44Speaker 1: part of the lore, is that he absolutely hated doing
- 40:47Speaker 1: a puppet show.
- 40:51Speaker 4: Now, did you did you watch all the Alps were
- 40:54Speaker 4: religious ALF because there's.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Episodes, I Mitch, I mean, I'm not ready to do
- 40:57Speaker 1: the rewatch podcast.
- 40:58Speaker 4: But there's a there's a very special ALF where I
- 41:02Speaker 4: remember mostly is crying during alf. ALF wred to visit
- 41:05Speaker 4: the girl in the hospital. It was like, you know,
- 41:07Speaker 4: tonight on a very special ALF.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Do you remember when they would do you remember when
- 41:13Speaker 1: they would like back in the day, for those of
- 41:14Speaker 1: you who are too young, they when there was a
- 41:16Speaker 1: sad like on Scrubs. We had sad episodes all the time,
- 41:19Speaker 1: but on the old school sitcoms, they would always warn you,
- 41:22Speaker 1: like tonight on a very special silver Spoons, the ricker
- 41:27Speaker 1: will the ricker will kill a deer, we recommend and
- 41:31Speaker 1: they would go, we recommend parents watch with their children.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Do you remember that for sure?
- 41:35Speaker 4: But on Scrubs, if it was sad, we just would
- 41:38Speaker 4: play the theme song a little.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Yeah, so there was silver spoons when the wrecker killed
- 41:49Speaker 1: a deer, there was different strokes. When Dudley got molested
- 41:52Speaker 1: by the bike shop owner, remember that.
- 41:55Speaker 2: I do remember that, and everything happened to Dudley or Arnold.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and then I don't know what happened on ALF,
- 42:01Speaker 1: but I don't know if they made the announcement. It
- 42:02Speaker 1: must have been serious.
- 42:03Speaker 3: Tony special episode of Alf Alf learns to touch himself.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Oh boy, oh boy, but you can't handle it.
- 42:14Speaker 1: I used to have an alf stuffed animal and uh, well,
- 42:17Speaker 1: never mind that. Man, it sounds like I fucked the doll.
- 42:20Speaker 1: I didn't.
- 42:21Speaker 3: I just I just it did sound like you were
- 42:23Speaker 3: about to say it sounded like you were about to say, yeah.
- 42:26Speaker 2: I fucked the doll.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Did Alf have a tail?
- 42:30Speaker 2: I don't know. No, no, no, he did not.
- 42:32Speaker 4: I don't think so well.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Can you please look up with Alf had a tail?
- 42:34Speaker 2: Alf did not have a tail.
- 42:36Speaker 1: You're feeling really confident about that. You didn't see pretty
- 42:38Speaker 1: sure you didn't see Alf's ask that much.
- 42:41Speaker 3: Okay, let's talk about how well Johnny does in this episode.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Yeah, in the monologue, in the monologue section, everybody's great.
- 42:47Speaker 1: In the Oh, Joelle, what you look? Your face lit up?
- 42:51Speaker 2: Alf does have a tail?
- 42:57Speaker 1: Donald, You fucking liar.
- 43:00Speaker 2: I just don't remember after the long term.
- 43:03Speaker 1: No, it's like a dog's tail.
- 43:05Speaker 4: And it only because you can see him like he's
- 43:07Speaker 4: looking out the window in a single shot.
- 43:10Speaker 3: Listen, but I want to see if the album barely
- 43:12Speaker 3: remember episodes of Scrubs.
- 43:13Speaker 2: How am I supposed to remember Alf?
- 43:16Speaker 1: He does have a tail, so I am a memory.
- 43:19Speaker 1: I think what I was trying to say with the
- 43:20Speaker 1: stuff animals, I used to pull Alf's tail through his
- 43:24Speaker 1: legs to make it look like it was Alb's peenis.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 43:39Speaker 1: All right, all right, so is good in this episode? Yes,
- 43:42Speaker 1: not only that.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Before we do that, let's go back a little bit.
- 43:45Speaker 3: Uh, I didn't know that Kelso's actual name was Kelso
- 43:48Speaker 3: Kelso Kelsanovitch.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I don't think that comes up again. But
- 43:54Speaker 1: this is the first episode where he introduces his wife's name, Enid.
- 43:57Speaker 3: Right, and I thought that was just very interesting that,
- 44:01Speaker 3: you know, he changed his name to fit in to
- 44:03Speaker 3: be to sound more American, so instead of kel Sonovich,
- 44:07Speaker 3: it then became Kelso.
- 44:09Speaker 1: I think everybody did, including uh, Donald Faison and Judy
- 44:14Speaker 1: and Sarah. Everybody was great in these monologue sections. They were,
- 44:19Speaker 1: oh god, it was kind of a cool. It's funny
- 44:20Speaker 1: because that documentary style became very common in shows like
- 44:23Speaker 1: the Office and A Modern Family that were doing sort
- 44:27Speaker 1: of the shaky cam documentary style was not a style
- 44:30Speaker 1: we did on Scrubs. But because of this segment, I
- 44:33Speaker 1: don't know why the interviewer was so herky jerky with
- 44:35Speaker 1: the damn camera. I mean, put the fucking thing on
- 44:36Speaker 1: a tripod and calm down. But it was the interviewer
- 44:40Speaker 1: was making like his own shaky cam TV show. But
- 44:43Speaker 1: I thought everyone it seemed like the mandate was that
- 44:46Speaker 1: they were not going to have cuts in them. They
- 44:47Speaker 1: would all be long takes. And yeah, and I thought
- 44:50Speaker 1: everyone did a really nice job in those scenes.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Do you call it?
- 44:53Speaker 3: They prepared us for that, because the fact that I
- 44:55Speaker 3: knew my lines like that was very weird yourself. I'm
- 45:01Speaker 3: watching it, I'm like, they're gonna cut soon, because there's
- 45:03Speaker 3: no way I remember all of this.
- 45:06Speaker 4: We talked about it a lot, and we knew it
- 45:09Speaker 4: was gonna be one take. If I remember correctly, those
- 45:12Speaker 4: are half the monologues that we did. I mean, part
- 45:15Speaker 4: of the reason why the episode is so long is
- 45:17Speaker 4: because those chunks. And I remember Johnny C I feel
- 45:20Speaker 4: like he was disappointed because there was another long take.
- 45:25Speaker 4: You know. So even though this episode is what do
- 45:27Speaker 4: we Say? Twenty four eight, twenty eight, twenty eight, I
- 45:31Speaker 4: think the editor's cut was closer to forty.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Yeah, And there's a really cool section later on where
- 45:37Speaker 1: Donald and Judy are side by side and they're still
- 45:40Speaker 1: not cutting, so they were able to time out. I
- 45:42Speaker 1: don't know, was Judy in the room reading with you? Donald,
- 45:44Speaker 1: do you remember?
- 45:45Speaker 4: No? That was it.
- 45:46Speaker 2: They gave us earwigs, I think for that.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Because earwig, if for those who don't know, is a
- 45:52Speaker 1: tiny ear piece that goes in your ear that you
- 45:55Speaker 1: can't see, the camera can't see.
- 45:56Speaker 3: I remember rehearsing it with the voice track.
- 46:01Speaker 2: I think they recorded Judy first.
- 46:03Speaker 3: I could be wrong, though, I think they recorded Judy
- 46:05Speaker 3: first and then I went in after her to record.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Well, the timing of that was perfect because you you know,
- 46:12Speaker 1: you had to stall, so you were like thinking and
- 46:14Speaker 1: then you took a sip of your water and like
- 46:16Speaker 1: it totally looked natural, but it was. It was well
- 46:18Speaker 1: done by by Larry trilling trilling Man.
- 46:21Speaker 3: That was one of the That was one of the
- 46:22Speaker 3: highlights in my notes that I wrote. You know, this
- 46:27Speaker 3: was his first episode to direct for us, and we
- 46:29Speaker 3: gave him a pretty you know, you guys gave him
- 46:31Speaker 3: a big randall and you and Bill gave.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Him a pretty big episode to produce.
- 46:36Speaker 3: I wondered if it was ever, like, Yo, what money
- 46:39Speaker 3: do I get to make this go easier for me?
- 46:42Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 46:42Speaker 1: Like, I'm guessing he was told that it was going
- 46:45Speaker 1: to be a long one because right Randall or it
- 46:48Speaker 1: was decided after the fact.
- 46:51Speaker 4: It was decided after the fact. We didn't know it
- 46:52Speaker 4: was going to come out, but we knew from timing
- 46:55Speaker 4: the table read that we were up against it and
- 46:57Speaker 4: that we didn't want to make cuts in those you know,
- 47:01Speaker 4: soliloquy pieces, you know, directly to the camera. For some reason,
- 47:05Speaker 4: I feel like production wise, there was just a lot
- 47:08Speaker 4: of talk about the pizza clock, like getting the right
- 47:10Speaker 4: angle and how much beizza did it take out? And
- 47:13Speaker 4: you know, we were we were in that bedroom for
- 47:15Speaker 4: so long, which was a tight set.
- 47:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and Sarah and I, you know, we were friends
- 47:21Speaker 1: and we really loved each other. But that was a
- 47:24Speaker 1: very bizarre thing to have that much fake sex all
- 47:28Speaker 1: over one set for many days on end.
- 47:31Speaker 3: Well, yeah, not just that you guys were very much
- 47:33Speaker 3: in each other's face. I was going to ask you,
- 47:35Speaker 3: you guys made out a lot in this episode. Yeah,
- 47:38Speaker 3: how awkward was that for you?
- 47:41Speaker 1: I think it was you know, you always hear actors
- 47:45Speaker 1: talking about, oh it's you know, it's all very you know, choreographed,
- 47:48Speaker 1: and it's not weird at all.
- 47:49Speaker 4: It is weird.
- 47:50Speaker 1: You know, there's everyone standing around, you're making out with
- 47:52Speaker 1: your good friend. Uh, it's you know, it was. It
- 47:57Speaker 1: was bizarre. I remember being because also a lot of
- 47:59Speaker 1: most times like okay, there's a quick makeout scene. It's
- 48:01Speaker 1: a TV show, you know, that's that's all it ever is.
- 48:04Speaker 1: This was like, you know, wrestling around and groping each
- 48:07Speaker 1: other and for days, So it was.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Weird face to face and not only face to.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Fanaka Donald, you gotta have Banaka. We had a boom
- 48:18Speaker 1: man named Kevin. What was his last name? Ryandal do
- 48:21Speaker 1: you remember?
- 48:22Speaker 4: I can't figure it right now.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Also hires the whole crew everybody, so he should really
- 48:28Speaker 1: know Kevin's last name. But Kevin used to see that
- 48:31Speaker 1: we all used to have banaka. This is like back
- 48:33Speaker 1: in the day still that we had like spray the
- 48:35Speaker 1: aerosol banokam and uh. We made a joke like, oh,
- 48:38Speaker 1: it'd be great because the boom MIC's right over your head.
- 48:40Speaker 1: We were like, it'd be great if there was a
- 48:41Speaker 1: boom if there was banaka on the boom, because then
- 48:44Speaker 1: we can just reach up, pull the boom mic down
- 48:45Speaker 1: and grab it off. Next day we show up and
- 48:47Speaker 1: he had velcrowe a banaka to the end of the
- 48:50Speaker 1: boom mic not not the mic itself, the stick and
- 48:54Speaker 1: poll and Kevin santy, thank you and uh and and
- 48:58Speaker 1: literally he wasn't just a joke. He kept it up
- 49:00Speaker 1: there for like months. And whenever you need a banaka,
- 49:03Speaker 1: you just reach up, grab the boom pole, pull it
- 49:05Speaker 1: off to a spray. They'll crawl back and stick it up.
- 49:08Speaker 3: I used to go crazy with the banaka because I
- 49:10Speaker 3: felt like, maybe if I spray enough in my mouth
- 49:12Speaker 3: the aarosol and the freaking mint will get me high enough.
- 49:18Speaker 1: When your weed was wearing off. So Donald, this weed
- 49:21Speaker 1: had worn off and he was on set too long.
- 49:23Speaker 1: He's like, let me try and get high on baca.
- 49:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:25Speaker 2: I remember one day Randall came into the room.
- 49:27Speaker 3: Randal, tell me if you remember this, and you were
- 49:29Speaker 3: like Donald and we were on set.
- 49:31Speaker 2: You were like, Donald, wake up.
- 49:32Speaker 3: Do I need to splash cold water in your face
- 49:34Speaker 3: and something breake you ass up?
- 49:35Speaker 2: Where you high or something?
- 49:41Speaker 4: No?
- 49:42Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no no, No, But in my
- 49:44Speaker 3: mind I was like, they know, they know.
- 49:48Speaker 1: It's probably because you were taking too long to get
- 49:50Speaker 1: to set.
- 49:51Speaker 9: No.
- 49:52Speaker 3: The only time I took a long time to get
- 49:53Speaker 3: to set was when Grand Theft Auto Vice City came out.
- 49:56Speaker 3: And I remember one time they were trying to get
- 49:58Speaker 3: me the set and I was my way out the
- 50:00Speaker 3: door and Randall's pushing my door in as I'm pulling
- 50:03Speaker 3: it and I was like hi, and he was like,
- 50:07Speaker 3: get upstairs, random.
- 50:12Speaker 1: You had to be bad cop.
- 50:14Speaker 4: I had to get the grip. Yeah, grab people, steer them.
- 50:16Speaker 4: I remember sending a PA to your house one time, Zach.
- 50:20Speaker 4: Somebody had to climb over the fence to get you
- 50:22Speaker 4: to like, wait, it.
- 50:23Speaker 1: Was a really bad moment. No, what happened was the power.
- 50:25Speaker 1: What had happened was the power went out. The power
- 50:29Speaker 1: went out in my in my on my street or
- 50:31Speaker 1: my neighborhood, and so the alarms didn't go off and
- 50:35Speaker 1: and also the phones didn't work, and so I woke
- 50:38Speaker 1: up to a PA knocking on my window, and which
- 50:43Speaker 1: is the worst sight if you're an actor. It's like
- 50:45Speaker 1: the most horrible feeling. And I remember getting to set
- 50:48Speaker 1: really late, and Bill looked at me, and he's like, no, no,
- 50:50Speaker 1: don't worry, we'll split the fifty grand.
- 50:55Speaker 4: I think during scrubs I had a real moment of
- 50:58Speaker 4: peace about producing, which was I gave up on the
- 51:02Speaker 4: idea of everything being okay for more than five minutes
- 51:05Speaker 4: at a time, because nothing's ever always okay. It's like no,
- 51:10Speaker 4: and and nobody comes to my door to be like
- 51:15Speaker 4: everything's great. It's like, you know, somebody took my candy.
- 51:19Speaker 4: We don't have any film. You know, somebody's late.
- 51:22Speaker 3: Did we ever run out of film?
- 51:25Speaker 4: We came, We came close. We used to a lot
- 51:27Speaker 4: of short ends one particular week because part of the
- 51:29Speaker 4: reason that we were able to fly under the radar financially,
- 51:35Speaker 4: and one of the reasons that that show is one
- 51:37Speaker 4: of the last shows to be on film is because
- 51:41Speaker 4: we shot on sixteen. We shot Super sixteen, not thirty five,
- 51:44Speaker 4: So we cut our production costs, you know, by a lot.
- 51:47Speaker 4: But we made a great print. I mean we we
- 51:49Speaker 4: showed that show on a DJA in the GGA screening
- 51:53Speaker 4: room and held up.
- 51:55Speaker 1: So yeah, those of you who don't know, this was
- 51:57Speaker 1: one of the last shows still being shot on film,
- 52:00Speaker 1: especially sixteen millimeter film. Probably at the time. Probably nothing
- 52:04Speaker 1: is right now, I would guess unless it's like a
- 52:07Speaker 1: big budget feature on Netflix or something. But most people
- 52:11Speaker 1: don't do that anymore anyway, And it's one of the
- 52:13Speaker 1: reasons why people always ask how come there's no blu
- 52:16Speaker 1: ray and high resolution sixteen by nine version of the show.
- 52:22Speaker 1: It's because when we made it, we didn't and we
- 52:24Speaker 1: were done with it. No one anticipated all this streaming stuff,
- 52:27Speaker 1: so it was never like upres to be four K video.
- 52:31Speaker 4: Right, they didn't cut the film and then we do it,
- 52:34Speaker 4: and some of the film that we used you can't
- 52:36Speaker 4: even get anymore. A lot of the flashback scenes I think,
- 52:40Speaker 4: I think you'll see it in season one are shot
- 52:43Speaker 4: on something that was called reversal film, which was like
- 52:47Speaker 4: from the Vietnam War. It could had this look of yeah.
- 52:50Speaker 1: That's why they have a specific texture, though in fact
- 52:53Speaker 1: there's different clearly a different film stock being shot for
- 52:56Speaker 1: these interview sequences, because they're very grainy and have a
- 52:59Speaker 1: different color sort of palette than the show itself.
- 53:03Speaker 3: When did we switch When did we switch over to chip?
- 53:05Speaker 3: Then when did we switch over to digital?
- 53:07Speaker 1: Because I know, did you do it in season nine?
- 53:09Speaker 1: It would only be in season nine.
- 53:11Speaker 2: I think it was before season nine, to be honest
- 53:13Speaker 2: with you.
- 53:13Speaker 4: I don't think so. I mean because because it was
- 53:17Speaker 4: talked about so much shows, because NBC had made this
- 53:19Speaker 4: mandate that everybody was going digital. But then when they
- 53:22Speaker 4: looked at our numbers, they were like, hey, keep doing
- 53:23Speaker 4: what you're doing. Like I think, I think maybe in
- 53:27Speaker 4: that season nine we went digital, Like I honestly can't
- 53:29Speaker 4: remember us the top of my head.
- 53:30Speaker 2: I remember that.
- 53:31Speaker 3: I remember that that was very interesting when you would
- 53:33Speaker 3: see them changing mags or somebody getting the film ready
- 53:38Speaker 3: for the day and having to put the film in
- 53:40Speaker 3: a mag so that it could fit on the camera
- 53:44Speaker 3: and reaching into this like bag.
- 53:47Speaker 2: It looked like a bag, is what it looked like.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Well, it was a picture like a miniature camping tent
- 53:52Speaker 1: that like that would fit on a desktop, and it
- 53:54Speaker 1: was blacked out so that they could put their hands
- 53:57Speaker 1: in there and not expose the film while loading them
- 54:00Speaker 1: camera magazines.
- 54:01Speaker 4: Right.
- 54:01Speaker 3: I used to I used to be like, I remember
- 54:03Speaker 3: when we switched over to I guess it was season
- 54:06Speaker 3: nine where we switched over to CHIP and I remember
- 54:08Speaker 3: being like, this is the easiest thing in the world.
- 54:10Speaker 3: Why didn't we do this before, like we could do
- 54:13Speaker 3: takes for days and days and days. All I remember
- 54:18Speaker 3: all my fuck ups, every time I missed a line
- 54:21Speaker 3: or forgot a line and everything like that. I remember
- 54:23Speaker 3: being like, how much how much more room do we
- 54:26Speaker 3: have on the mag before? Before you know what I mean,
- 54:29Speaker 3: before we're out and we have to and we have
- 54:30Speaker 3: to change the mag again.
- 54:32Speaker 1: You'd have eleven you'd have about eleven minutes on a
- 54:34Speaker 1: sixty millimeter magazine and uh and and you'd be like
- 54:37Speaker 1: trying to trying to get it, be like, how much
- 54:39Speaker 1: how much more fun we got before you rolled out?
- 54:40Speaker 1: I got it? I got I got it. Let's go,
- 54:42Speaker 1: let's go go, you can go forever.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Now you'd be like, don't cut, don't cut. We gotta cut,
- 54:46Speaker 2: we gotta cut.
- 54:46Speaker 3: We only got like nineteen feet, all right, fine cut.
- 54:51Speaker 1: When I say to Sarah, we're gonna need a stool sample,
- 54:54Speaker 1: not for medical reasons, my robot needs food. I made that,
- 55:00Speaker 1: I'm proud to say, and Sarah cracked up at it.
- 55:02Speaker 1: And it's so random and weird, but I love it. Okay,
- 55:07Speaker 1: I gotta feed my robot yo pooh.
- 55:10Speaker 3: Yeah, nobody's pooh patient pooh patient poof for the rover.
- 55:15Speaker 4: It all comes down to pooh.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Everything comes And I laughed out loud when Sarah is
- 55:19Speaker 1: seventeen oh four. Sarah is making fun of my laugh
- 55:22Speaker 1: because she's like already over me, and she's.
- 55:23Speaker 4: Like, oh my god, that is so funny. That does
- 55:27Speaker 4: a funny impression of you, because I mean that laugh
- 55:31Speaker 4: has got a lot of genuine laughs with the silly
- 55:35Speaker 4: JD laugh all through the season. Yeah.
- 55:38Speaker 3: I feel like that's how every I think that's how
- 55:40Speaker 3: every relationship should be.
- 55:41Speaker 2: What you see is what you get, you know what
- 55:43Speaker 2: I mean.
- 55:44Speaker 3: Unfortunately, unfortunately what you see and what you get sometimes
- 55:49Speaker 3: you think you want it, and then eventually it makes
- 55:52Speaker 3: you want to kill the person what it turns out to,
- 55:54Speaker 3: which turns out to be with Elliott and JD. She
- 55:56Speaker 3: loved the laugh in the beginning. Oh I love it
- 55:59Speaker 3: so cute, and then at the end of the show
- 56:02Speaker 3: she's like, fuck that laugh, dude, laugh like that again
- 56:05Speaker 3: one more time, I dare you.
- 56:08Speaker 1: It's like, say what again?
- 56:09Speaker 2: Say again, motherfucker, say what one more time?
- 56:13Speaker 1: I know I hear you. Isn't that so sad?
- 56:15Speaker 4: Though?
- 56:15Speaker 1: When a relationship goes sour and all the things you
- 56:17Speaker 1: thought were so adorable you now just fucking hate.
- 56:20Speaker 3: Yeah, that was my life back in the day. Oh,
- 56:24Speaker 3: he's got such potential.
- 56:26Speaker 1: We have some guests here, Randall. So we have a
- 56:29Speaker 1: guest that come on the show. Randal, I know that
- 56:31Speaker 1: you don't listen to the podcast.
- 56:32Speaker 2: So Randall listens to the podcast.
- 56:35Speaker 1: He does, I don't. Yeah, he does.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Yeah, he does.
- 56:37Speaker 3: Because somebody was like, yo, they talked about you on
- 56:39Speaker 3: the podcast the other Yeah.
- 56:41Speaker 1: That means that means that Randall was told by someone
- 56:44Speaker 1: and he went and listened to one.
- 56:45Speaker 2: He was like, oh, they got a podcast. Check out.
- 56:49Speaker 5: Somebody's on the.
- 56:49Speaker 4: Podcast his real friends. I was like, oh nice.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Hey, yeah, I got shut out.
- 56:57Speaker 3: All right, we're gonna go to a break and when
- 56:58Speaker 3: we come back, we'll have our guests.
- 57:07Speaker 1: So Randall, when we do the commercial breaks and the
- 57:10Speaker 1: song comes back, it doesn't have them. A lot of
- 57:13Speaker 1: a lot of our fans like to add their own.
- 57:16Speaker 1: That's part of Barbara Robbie. Barbara and Robbie are twins.
- 57:26Speaker 2: One of your is a doctor.
- 57:27Speaker 1: My god, things are getting weird, you guys. Two different
- 57:30Speaker 1: women have entered and they appear to be identical twins
- 57:33Speaker 1: in different parts of the world where you guys call
- 57:35Speaker 1: it from.
- 57:36Speaker 11: I'm calling from UK, in the.
- 57:39Speaker 2: UK, and you're so you guys, are you a doctor?
- 57:47Speaker 11: Yes I am, Yes, I am, but I'm not working yet.
- 57:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 57:51Speaker 11: I had some problems for coronavirus which delayed some technical issues.
- 57:58Speaker 1: Okay, okay.
- 57:59Speaker 2: And then Robbie, what about you? Are you a doctor too? No?
- 58:03Speaker 12: No, I got doited in law last February.
- 58:07Speaker 2: So you've got a lawyer and a doctor. Your parents
- 58:09Speaker 2: will be very happy, very proud.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:13Speaker 12: And last time we saw each other was at the
- 58:16Speaker 12: beginning of March when I brought Bobby to the airport
- 58:21Speaker 12: to take her flight to go to the UK and
- 58:24Speaker 12: move there.
- 58:25Speaker 1: Oh, so you've been apart for a long time. I
- 58:27Speaker 1: just miss each.
- 58:27Speaker 11: Other, Yes, a lot. That's why I also asked you
- 58:32Speaker 11: to do this meeting in because I knew that it
- 58:36Speaker 11: was very important to her. It is important also for me.
- 58:39Speaker 11: But she had a very rough time, so oh well, we're.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Here to cheer her up. I'm so glad that you
- 58:44Speaker 1: called in because not only do you have the legendary
- 58:46Speaker 1: Donald Faison here and he's always funny, you have Randall Winston,
- 58:50Speaker 1: who was our line producer, but you may know him
- 58:53Speaker 1: as Leonard the security guard. And also he played Death
- 58:56Speaker 1: and you know, we've gotten a lot of questions for
- 58:59Speaker 1: Death on our Instagram pages. So finally you can ask
- 59:04Speaker 1: deaf any question you have.
- 59:06Speaker 11: Oh, that's wonderful.
- 59:08Speaker 3: Than played much mouth from the Yeah you did play
- 59:14Speaker 3: much mouth from Freaking the Fat Out Jump.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Yes, different, you had three different parts.
- 59:21Speaker 2: You had that big ass helmet on your head too.
- 59:26Speaker 2: All right, so let's.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Get ahead, ladies, ask a question.
- 59:29Speaker 12: I would like to start it because I am in
- 59:31Speaker 12: a theater company as well, so sometimes we argue about
- 59:36Speaker 12: the best ways to perform. You know, when you have
- 59:40Speaker 12: to feel in character and you have to feel what
- 59:45Speaker 12: your character is feeling in order to act. So I
- 59:50Speaker 12: was wondering whether sometimes you had some difficulties with that
- 59:55Speaker 12: and to make a very strange scene you couldn't really
- 1:00:00Speaker 12: feel what JD or Turk or.
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: Or Leonards.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Thank you, Bobby, thank you for including him.
- 1:00:11Speaker 12: My pleasure, So if you had to find some strange
- 1:00:15Speaker 12: way to perform. I thought about this question when I
- 1:00:19Speaker 12: was listening to your podcast last week, and Donald said
- 1:00:23Speaker 12: when he had to memorize the line you need the
- 1:00:27Speaker 12: surgical counsole, so you had to make a song about it.
- 1:00:32Speaker 12: So if if my question is not about memorizing things,
- 1:00:36Speaker 12: it's more about like acting the feeling.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Yeah, uh, you know, let Leonard go first.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: When I strapped on the arm.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Here's here's the thing. You you work hard.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: You work so hard to try to feel everything, and
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: that's what comes with being an actor. You're gonna work
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: hard hard and you've ever worked in your life to
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: try to feel it. But when the camera rolls and
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: you don't feel it, you better act the shit out
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: of it, you know what I mean, Because at the
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: end of the day, it still has to be made.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: So you're gonna work your hard is to try and
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: feel the emotion and find the emotion and pinpoint what
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: it is that you're you know, you'll make notes and
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: you'll do all of that stuff. But there comes a
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: time when you're doing it where all of that preparation
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: and stuff isn't helping, you know what I mean, And
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: so when it's not helping, it's time for you to
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: act the shit out of it.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: And that's just how it goes, you know what I mean.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I would say there's times when it's really just natural
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: and then there's times where it feels forced and you
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: don't feel present. You can see the cameraman and you
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: can see the crew, and your stomach's growling because you're hungry,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: and you know, you had an argument with someone in
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: your family, and all these things that happen in any job,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: and you and you're in your head and you're distracted,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: and the trick with acting is to always be as
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: present as possible. The good news about acting on film
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: and tell vision is you really only need to do
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: it in spurts because you're you're you're trying to shine
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: for your other actor, but also when the camera's on you,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: when it's on when you're no matter what the shot is.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: When you're doing a play, you have to maintain that
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: for for two hours and and scene real. But with
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: with film and TV acting, the real challenge is to
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: get it in spurts enough so that it will cut
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: together and be believable. But but yeah, it can be
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: really it can be really challenging, especially when you're there's
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: so much distraction. You know, there's phones ringing, and there's
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: a helicopter overhead, and and you're upset about something in
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: your private life. You know, it's it's it's a real
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: challenge to do everything you can to be present in
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: the moment.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: And when you can't be present, that's what that's what
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: acting is.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Then you fake it till you make it, fake it
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: till you make it. Now, Randall, when you were playing Leonard,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: did you did? You didn't? Didn't Leonard have a love interest?
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: By the way, Oh, yes, I had to miss it
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: was a scene.
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: Yes she was.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Uh And wasn't she a fellow security guarden?
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: No, no, she was. Maybe she was a candy striper
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: or something. I just.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Oh, Robbie, no, she was an old Yes, that was
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: I had to open mouth kissing her.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: That was specifically requested.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: By her? Was it in the script um?
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: That parts a little foggy, But you know, I think.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Robbie's question, how did you maintain being president in the
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: moment when you were kissing the senior citizen?
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: You know what, Robbie, I should have been listening, and
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: I've been listening to her.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you were listening to her mouth. Okay, ladies, good question, Yes,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: go ahead with another one. Donald left he was so
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: offended by that question he left.
- 1:04:04Speaker 11: Okay, So my question is we watched Scrubs a lot
- 1:04:08Speaker 11: of time, and the first time we watched it we
- 1:04:11Speaker 11: were just teenagers, and so we watched it in Italian.
- 1:04:15Speaker 11: So I wondered, have you ever listened to yourself dubbed
- 1:04:19Speaker 11: in other languages such as Alan or Spanish or Japanese. Yes.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I hate how they dubbed me in Spanish and
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: Italian and stuff like that. I never have a deep voice.
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: I'm always like, yeah, I prefer your voice.
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: It's funny is that in most countries, when you become
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: a known actor, they pick the same actor to always
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: do you. So if Donald's in one, if he's in
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Scrubs and then he goes off to do another film
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: that is not even to do with Scrubs, it's usually
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: the same actor being Donald.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: And I hate that.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: I hate that that one person is like, oh, oh no,
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: was he playing in this?
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: Oh, don't worry about it. I did him on Scrubs.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: I got this, So to Donald's to Donald's dismay, that
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: voice will always be his voice.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: That pisses me off, man, Yeah.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: I have. I've heard myself in almost so many voices.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: Traveling around, especially when the show was on NonStop, we
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: travel around the World and you turn on the TV
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: and there you were speaking German. It was very funny.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: I remember, Uh, then there was a thing where we
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: had Germans in the show Herman the German right with
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: the with the balloon things, none of that. And then
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: I remember in Germany they had to change where they
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: were from because it made no sense that their language
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: was different, like you know, so you know, like think
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: about it. If the show has a character that's speaking
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: of the language, and all of a sudden, the show's
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: dubbed into that language, they then have to switch that
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: person's language, so it doesn't what makes sense.
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: I think we made them Belgium.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Yes, I think you're right. N Randall, How do you
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: feel as being dubbed as Death and Leonard.
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: As long as my fan base all? Did you ever hear?
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Have you ever heard yourself dubbed in other languages?
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: Randall? I have not.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: The good thing about dubbing Death is that you don't
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: see his mouth moves, so it doesn't look bad exactly.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: I prefer subtitles, but they don't. They don't do that.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: A lot of countries just dub it.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: I don't prefer subtitles. I do not like subtitles.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: You know you'd rather be dubbed.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a I'm a very poor reader. So having
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: to read subtitles.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: Does your poor screen? Does your dyslexia. I've never asked
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: you this before, but does that make you less likely
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: to watch subtitled films?
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: No, you know, a good movie is a good movie,
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: no matter what, even with a learning disability, even if
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: it is written on the screen. My dyslexia isn't so
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: bad that I can't keep up right.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I just never asked you. I wondered if you if
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: you said, ah, fuck, it's be paying the asser for
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: me to read these subtitles.
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: Or no, I would though I would prefer not to read.
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: I'd prefer to listen to a dubbed mix.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Right, got it?
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Do you guys have another question?
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: You're giving them three? It must because they're separated sisters.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: They're separated sisters. This is the first time they've talked
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: to each other since March.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: Right, they're using us. They don't care about scrubs. They
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: just want to, you know, get on our zoom and
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: talk to each other.
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: Like I did a show back in a day called
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: Free to Be a Family, and we did a space
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: bridge to Russia and this is like our space bridge
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: between the UK and Italy.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: Was that like free to be? Was that like free
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: to be you and me?
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it was free to be you and me.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: We're gonna have to see free to be you and
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: me songs Monday.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: We're free to be I could say in a Russian
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: glee wee wheat e e t t e glee we
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: wheat nois sennoi.
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: Right, wow, We're free to be you and me, You
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: and me, We're free to be a family.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: I only know a little Russian from the Billy Joel
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: Coleopt album when he played and he said Milly Joe
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: and the crowd went crazy.
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: I know that because I got to wrap We're free
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: to be You and me with the Fat Boys. There
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: a lot of people don't remember the Fat Boys, but
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: one of them was an amazing beat boxer and he
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: beat boxed while I rapped.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: Anyway, So if you guys have enough, did you.
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: Ever answer any any any calls on the scrubs phone
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: that were from out of the country.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: No, I never answered any.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: When we did this episode with Call Turk and we
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: had cal Turk, we had to get a real phone line,
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: and Bill thought it would be I don't know if
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: it was you or Bill Randall, but said, you know,
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: rather than do a five five five number, let's get
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: a real number and have it all ring on a
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: cell phone. And so the cell phone was in the
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Scrubs production office and it would just ring all the time,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: and when you were randomly just walking through and you
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: had a minute to kill, you just answer it and
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: talk to fans because it would just ring NonStop.
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: Done stop for like five years. And we kept the
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: map and we put pins in it, you know, every
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: time we would get calls.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that was cool. It's all over the world, All right, ladies,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: one last question, go ahead.
- 1:09:12Speaker 12: That's the thing I started to reach. Watched the show
- 1:09:15Speaker 12: as well during this quarantine because my boyfriend was with
- 1:09:19Speaker 12: me and he never watched Scrubs before, so I wanted
- 1:09:22Speaker 12: to rewatch it with him, and we watched it.
- 1:09:24Speaker 11: On Amazon Prime.
- 1:09:26Speaker 12: And I noticed the thing that you mentioned sometimes in
- 1:09:30Speaker 12: the podcast that they changed a few songs, especially one
- 1:09:34Speaker 12: it really pissed me off they changed it. It was
- 1:09:36Speaker 12: the one in the second season when j D and
- 1:09:39Speaker 12: Elliott kiss again and they start again and it's dreaming
- 1:09:44Speaker 12: of you of the choral and I was so waiting
- 1:09:49Speaker 12: for that scene and when it arrived, the song was
- 1:09:53Speaker 12: a different one.
- 1:09:53Speaker 11: So I was so pissed off.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: And we are too.
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:09:58Speaker 12: So I it's wondering whether you have some one song
- 1:10:03Speaker 12: or two that you really really like and you're attached
- 1:10:07Speaker 12: to it, you know, in one sea of Scrubs, and
- 1:10:11Speaker 12: you would really be angry if someone changed.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: Good question.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: Well, you know, anytime Josh Rayden did music on the show,
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: if that got taken off of the show, I would
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: be very upset. One because Josh is a very close
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: body of mine. And two his songs it seems like
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: were made for the episodes.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: Of Scrubs, you know what I mean.
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: Like, I don't know if Zach and Josh had a
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: thing where Zach would be like, yo, I need you
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: to write a song about this, and he'd be like,
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: I got it.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: No.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: But I mean the example that comes to mind the
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: same thing with me is Robbie is Josh's song. Because
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: you know we've told this on the podcast before, but
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: when he wrote that song Winter that played at Benefaier's
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: characters funeral, it was the first song you'd ever written.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: But he didn't have. Everyone was like, oh my god,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: this is amazing. Where's your album? He's like, album, it's
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: the only time ever written. So that one was particularly
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: special to all of us because Josh was our friend.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: He started playing guitar late in life. He wasn't someone
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: who played as a kid, and all of a sudden,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: you know, with the thanks to Bill putting him in
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: the show, his career blew up and he traveled, you know,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: when the world is not under lockdown. He travels all
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: around the world, and you guy should see him when
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: he comes to Italy because you'll you'll recognize a lot
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: of his music that was in scrubs. Another person I
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: want to just mention was Colin Hay who was really
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: special for the show.
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: And we're trying.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: To get brandall. I need your help. By the way,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: the fans are all listening. Yes, I need to get
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: Colin's information because we'd like to have him on for
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: the episode he was on in season two.
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: Okay, I get you. Whatever I had is my last contact.
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: But Colin was a real friend of the show and
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: fun and funny and had a good sense of humor
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: about himself. There was a song I think it's in
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: this season, the Christmas episode in Donald you are running
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: and we play center Man. Yeah, that song fel was
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: super powerful in the episode. And and we were all
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: disappointed when songs got changed out, particularly in those first
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: couple of seasons, because we were sort of like the
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: bastard step child over there and like always held to
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: a very strict, low budget number. We licensed a lot
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: of songs not for forever. You know, when you license
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: a song may have something called in perpetuity and all
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: of the media that is now known or yet to
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: be figured out, and you can keep the song. And
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: so there's one and two. The music wasn't licensed that way,
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: so we had to make some of those decisions about
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: which they kill.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: But I always assumed it was that I didn't know.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: What you're implying is that as the seasons go on,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: you then did shot started doing contracts that would cover streaming,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: but no one knew what streaming was at.
- 1:12:51Speaker 13: The time, exactly exactly, So like the first couple of seasons,
- 1:12:56Speaker 13: the first couple of seasons, if the licensing has run
- 1:12:58Speaker 13: out and then and didn't renegotiate or sign on to
- 1:13:04Speaker 13: continue the licensing, the network automatically just changed the song.
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean I actually had to sit with music
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: editor of music Licensing for like, uh a week or
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: so after the seasons were over in the summertime to
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: figure out like what songs were. Oh.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I always wondered who was who was putting these songs
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: on We've we talked about that on the podcast that
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: you don't listen to. But we always wondered, what what
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: intern what intern somewhere is choosing these like second best songs.
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: It's it was an exercise and killing babies like everything.
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: It was great. But they're like, they're like, you absolutely
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: cannot have all of this. You know, what do you
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: want to say? Right?
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: You're not gonna have center Man forever. All right, ladies,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: we have to move on because death has to take
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: his kids swimming. And but thank you. I I'm sorry
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: that you're I feel sad that your two sisters that
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: are separated. That's horrible.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: Is there anything you want to say to each other?
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Yeah? Is there anything want to say to each other
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: while everyone's listening.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: It's a free call.
- 1:14:06Speaker 11: Yes, we actually rehearsed it before.
- 1:14:15Speaker 12: Can we take a picture with you?
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Yes, of course.
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: Let me just get fresh for you. Let me get fresh.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: Thank you, thank you.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: Thank you, lady so much, thank you be saying so much.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: Safe nineteen oh nine, in the Bowling Alley, two people
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: on the left side of the screen spike the lens
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: looked directly into the camera. I'm not sure.
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: Oh my god, the Bowling Alley. Is that not the
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: day when our prop man got stuck.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: Under Yes, it is.
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: It does to retrieve the ball that it reached it.
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: It was proper set.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Patrick, my name Patrick Bolton.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: No, it wasn't.
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: It wasn't because it was somebody who we laughed at
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: much longer before we helped him. It was Acu. The
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: thing came down on him and we thought it was hilarious.
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: It was like a cartoon. Just saw his legs kick it,
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: and then suddenly somebody was like, oh my god, we should.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: Probably take get him out of there.
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: I remember he wasn't with us very much longer after that,
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: either that.
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: He was.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Soon after he hid rowdy in the ceiling.
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: He went to that guy. No, that guy went to uh,
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: Jimmy Kimmel.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: Ah.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Okay, So anyway, two people at the bowling eye, look
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: right in the lens. If you're interested in your in
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: your new hobby of finding people who spiked the lens.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: Donald you say, my baby knows how to knock him down.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: That was funny.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: My baby does know not. That was a lot of
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: fun I don't remember.
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: Okay, like most episodes we've watched so far, when watching this,
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: I didn't remember any of it. And I thought that
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: was the cutest thing. I thought Turk and Carla was
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: so cute and so on point for the joke when
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: JD's like, you know, couples go through this, this is
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: what happens. Name show me a happy couple. And then
- 1:15:59Speaker 3: right away you see Turk and Carla enjoying themselves.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, that was wonderful, and they're so sweet together.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: I mean you just you just love them. And then
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: especially of course when you cut to the documentary footage
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: thing and they're you know, and they're being so adorable
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: and and and both saying how much they love each other.
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: No, and you're rooting for them yeah, yeah, yeah, and
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: not necessarily for Elliott and j D in this episode,
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: even though it starts offtware, you're rooting for them.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: You can tell.
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: Once it gets to the bad times, you're like, wow,
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: these guys really aren't good for each other.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: Went sour so quick though.
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: Very well, you only have a half an hour to
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: tell the story.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: No, I'm saying like in the world of the show,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: they dated for like in two weeks and then they
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: were like, this isn't working.
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: But I think that was a pit sision by Bill
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: because he wanted you know, he didn't want to have
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: that protracted will they yeah, they will, They want the
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: friends thing, you know.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Then he ended up doing it anyway.
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: Yes, well, but that's the works well even at the end, right,
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: but even at the end of the episode, you say,
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: you know that that there do I think it'll work?
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: I do.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: And JD's right. JD's right, it does work. It just
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: doesn't work at that moment in time. In the long run,
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: in the in the grand scheme of things, these two
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: are meant to be together.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: So sad though I was, I was sad watching it
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: that the two people who love each other who can't.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: I'm just a sucker for unrequited love and and love
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: that cannot be. And here's two people that we want
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: to be together but they can't.
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: But that's when Harry met Sally, Like you said, that's
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: it that's when Harry met Sally all over again, you
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: know what I mean, Like, that's such one of my
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: favorite that's first of all, one of my favorite movies
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: But that story is great.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: It reminds me of Fiona apple Lyric when she says,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: only kisses on the cheek from now on, and.
- 1:17:58Speaker 14: Only they have wave, no, no, all right, if I
- 1:18:07Speaker 14: need you, I'll just use your simple name.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Keep going. Finish it.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Only kisses on the cheek from now on, and in
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: a little while, we'll only have to wave.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: That's so fucked up. They only have to wave. Hey,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: how you doing?
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: Hey? I remember breaking up with someone and then going
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: to give them a kiss and they gave me the
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: cheek and being like, yeah, that's probably where what I should.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: We should probably gets.
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: On the cheek from one one oh yeah, and now
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: I just wave.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: The last thing I want to say is that when
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: I liked how Judy a her delivery and also the
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: writing when she she ends the documentary section and she
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: says he seems to like who I am and I
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: just thought that was so sweet, Like, you know, all
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: bullshit aside, It seems like he genuinely likes who I
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: genuinely am, and I just thought that was really pretty. Yeah, man, Randall,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: you've been a phenomenal guest.
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: Thank you for having me.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: I feel like we're one step away from getting in
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: your car with you, so we want to let you go.
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: We should you just promise us you'll come back?
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: And do you come back? Randall? I feel like you're
