Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, we know it is going to be a massive
- 0:02Speaker 1: weekend of footy. Obviously the women playing in their grand finals,
- 0:07Speaker 1: some of the other grades as well throughout the afternoon
- 0:09Speaker 1: on Saturday, and then the men's Premier League Grand Final.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's going to be an absolute cracker. Saint Mary's taking
- 0:17Speaker 1: on war Retars. Now, these two teams, they're both right
- 0:20Speaker 1: up there as the league leaders throughout the season, but
- 0:23Speaker 1: we know there's war Retars. It's going to be their
- 0:25Speaker 1: first grand final since two thousand and eight. A bit
- 0:29Speaker 1: controversial last week I did reveal that I used to
- 0:32Speaker 1: cheer for the Nightcliff Tigers, but I'm definitely now converted
- 0:36Speaker 1: to Warritars. My little boy playing in the under tens
- 0:39Speaker 1: and they are a fantastic club. And joining me in
- 0:41Speaker 1: the studio this morning is the director of men's footy,
- 0:45Speaker 1: Chris Bryan. Good morning to you.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Chris, Good morning. How are you going today?
- 0:47Speaker 1: Yeah, really good. Lovely to have you in the studio.
- 0:50Speaker 1: And we've also got Joel Crocker, one of the players
- 0:52Speaker 1: with warro Task. Good morning to you, Joel.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Good morning to you. Also, thanks for having us.
- 0:56Speaker 1: It is fantastic to have you guys in the studio. Now, Chris,
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'm right to go to you first. Two thousand and eight,
- 1:03Speaker 1: the last grand final. When did we last win a premiership?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been a long time.
- 1:08Speaker 3: It was the season ninety nine, two thousand, so it's
- 1:11Speaker 3: been twenty two years since we've had success on the final.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Game of the year.
- 1:17Speaker 3: So it's pretty significant for the club really to be
- 1:21Speaker 3: back there in a Grand final. But we've given ourselves
- 1:25Speaker 3: a good chance to finally break that who doo, that
- 1:27Speaker 3: drought that we've been trying to do for so long now.
- 1:31Speaker 3: So it's going to be a big day. It's been
- 1:33Speaker 3: a big couple of weeks build up, you know, and
- 1:37Speaker 3: we're really excited. We can't wait to get it done.
- 1:39Speaker 1: What's the feeling like amongst some of those some of
- 1:42Speaker 1: those members of the club that have been there for
- 1:44Speaker 1: a long time and maybe we're even around last time
- 1:48Speaker 1: that you won the premiership.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I mean one of the supporters, Herbie who was the
- 1:53Speaker 3: last premiership captain there, he's been on the news today,
- 1:56Speaker 3: he's been on media Street, so he's been loving that.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But he's such a great guy and he's connected.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Like the group that we have this year's all come
- 2:04Speaker 3: from everywhere, so we're you know, we're a unique group.
- 2:07Speaker 3: We've all come in, but we've connected with these sort
- 2:09Speaker 3: of old timers that have been there and been at
- 2:13Speaker 3: the club forever. And obviously we all love Herbie. We
- 2:15Speaker 3: love having a drink with him after ours, Like he's
- 2:17Speaker 3: a really great guy. So were as playing group and
- 2:22Speaker 3: you know, the coaching stuff, we feel what they've gone through.
- 2:25Speaker 3: So that gives us a little bit extra motivation because
- 2:27Speaker 3: we're doing it for our mates too and our family.
- 2:29Speaker 3: You know, we say we're worried of one army. We're
- 2:31Speaker 3: a big family club in which we are and obviously
- 2:34Speaker 3: you know that now being involved and you look great
- 2:36Speaker 3: in your red.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Waratars polo shirt today, thank you.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So yeah, like we're actually doing it for everyone, you
- 2:44Speaker 3: know what I mean. So it's it's a really special
- 2:47Speaker 3: place and it's really exciting at the moment it is.
- 2:50Speaker 1: It's wonderful. It's a wonderful club and it's great to see.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I mean, Joel, what's it like for you then being
- 2:55Speaker 1: part of the team, this is your first season with Waratars.
- 2:57Speaker 1: What's it like for you coming into the side and
- 3:00Speaker 1: knowing that it's been such a long period since they
- 3:02Speaker 1: since they won the premiership and you know, getting out
- 3:05Speaker 1: there over the weekend and really wanting to do it
- 3:08Speaker 1: for them.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Well, as Chris said, you know, it's it's not just
- 3:11Speaker 4: us as players that we're doing it for.
- 3:13Speaker 2: It's more for.
- 3:14Speaker 4: The wider community and the wider club. You know, all
- 3:17Speaker 4: the people that have been involved at the club for
- 3:19Speaker 4: a really long time. We know how much it means
- 3:21Speaker 4: to them. Also, it means so much to us as
- 3:23Speaker 4: well to win a senior premiership, but knowing that the
- 3:27Speaker 4: footy club hasn't won a premiership for such a long time,
- 3:29Speaker 4: and how much it means to all the people involved,
- 3:33Speaker 4: like everyone at the footy club, all the juniors, all
- 3:36Speaker 4: the people that volunteers, everyone that helps out, and then
- 3:38Speaker 4: the players and supporters. We know how much it means
- 3:41Speaker 4: to everyone. We're very very family orientated club and yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 4: it's a it's going to be a very big occasion.
- 3:49Speaker 1: What's the feeling amongst the boys at the moment. How
- 3:51Speaker 1: is everybody you know, how's everybody been training together? And
- 3:55Speaker 1: obviously you're pumped for the weekend, But what's the feeling.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it's a it's a really good feeling. There's
- 4:01Speaker 4: a fair few nerves going around at the moment. But
- 4:04Speaker 4: I think we spoke about it last night. It's a
- 4:06Speaker 4: good thing to be nervous. You've got to embrace those
- 4:08Speaker 4: nerves because obviously it shows that it means something too
- 4:11Speaker 4: if you're nervous. So yeah, it's a really exciting time.
- 4:14Speaker 4: But I think that, you know, the boys just can't
- 4:17Speaker 4: wait to get out there. They just want the time
- 4:18Speaker 4: to fly from now tomorrow.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Nights and no doubt concentrating more on yourselves rather than
- 4:24Speaker 1: your oppositions at Mary's but I know that they you know,
- 4:27Speaker 1: going into it, they've won more premierships than anybody as
- 4:30Speaker 1: I understand, they certainly have that grand final experience, you know,
- 4:35Speaker 1: it's something like that sort of always in the back
- 4:37Speaker 1: of your mind. Or do you just concentrate on yourselves?
- 4:40Speaker 4: Obviously, Yeah, you've got to think about and make plans
- 4:42Speaker 4: for opposition, but at the same time, you're only in
- 4:45Speaker 4: control of what you can control. So yeah, we sort
- 4:49Speaker 4: of just trying to focus on ourselves. We'll come in
- 4:51Speaker 4: with a few tactics and plans going into the game,
- 4:54Speaker 4: but at the same time, yeah, you just got to
- 4:56Speaker 4: worry about yourselves and try and do what you can do, so.
- 4:59Speaker 3: I think it's all also like it is big, and
- 5:01Speaker 3: it's big for Saint Mary's too, I think, you know,
- 5:03Speaker 3: I read somewhere that they're on their longest ever Premiership
- 5:06Speaker 3: drought as well, so you know, losing the last two
- 5:09Speaker 3: Premier Grand Finals, you know they're under the pump as
- 5:12Speaker 3: well to get back. So it's going to be an
- 5:13Speaker 3: absolute cracker game. Like Joel said, we've put plans in place,
- 5:18Speaker 3: you know, to combat that, and we take care of
- 5:20Speaker 3: what we can take care of. You you know, we
- 5:23Speaker 3: feel confident in what we can.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Do, and it's it is also like, while there is
- 5:27Speaker 1: that pressure on all of the players when it comes
- 5:29Speaker 1: to a Grand Final, it's also such an exciting and
- 5:32Speaker 1: fun time. I know that you guys have got your
- 5:34Speaker 1: captains run. I believe tonight.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Yeah, captains run tonight. So the final training session for
- 5:40Speaker 3: the year. You know, we're lucky enough we've got some
- 5:43Speaker 3: Div One boys that are still sticking around, so we've
- 5:45Speaker 3: got some good numbers on the track. So we're asking
- 5:47Speaker 3: all supporters out there come on down and watch the
- 5:51Speaker 3: boys train tonight. The clubhouse will be open, grab yourself
- 5:54Speaker 3: a drink and watch the boys go through their final
- 5:56Speaker 3: paces before the big the big dance to night six thirty.
- 6:01Speaker 3: It's going to be exciting time. So everyone get down
- 6:03Speaker 3: there tonight.
- 6:04Speaker 2: It'd be great.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It's going to be so exciting. I've noticed as well,
- 6:06Speaker 1: there's streamers all around the place. I believe Sarah has
- 6:09Speaker 1: been out just hanging up streamers. Maybe Carly as well,
- 6:12Speaker 1: just popping them up here.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I dropped off a few pamphlets to all the sponsors
- 6:17Speaker 3: the other day and Carly's dry bar in town that's
- 6:21Speaker 3: fully red and wide and yeah, look it's great.
- 6:24Speaker 2: We just we want to paint the town red.
- 6:25Speaker 3: You know, not only today and tomorrow night, but you
- 6:28Speaker 3: know when we come away with the win and everyone's
- 6:30Speaker 3: celebrating in their red, it's going to be great.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Absolutely well, all the very best, Chris Bryan, of course,
- 6:36Speaker 1: the director of Meets Footy with Warrataz and Joel Crocker.
- 6:39Speaker 1: We really appreciate you coming in mate. I hope you
- 6:42Speaker 1: have a cracking game.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 6:43Speaker 1: We'll be there watching. Thank you votes so much for Youatie,
- 6:46Speaker 1: appreciate it.
