Latest / Abbey the Podcast Lady / The Content Batch Strategy Every Podcaster Needs Before Cold and Flu Season
Transcript
- 0:00It may not look like it based on the backdrop
- 0:02of my podcast today, but it's cold and flu season
- 0:04in Minnesota. And if you're not batching your
- 0:06content, what are you doing? Hello and welcome
- 0:14to another episode of Happy the Podcast Lady,
- 0:17doing one of the last pontoon podcasts of the
- 0:20season, hanging out at the lake. It is a beautiful
- 0:22September day, blue skies, crystal clear water,
- 0:26lots of sunshine, but internally, I do not feel
- 0:30good. I'm actually feeling really bad. I don't
- 0:33know if you can tell in my voice or not. I'm
- 0:34really trying to push through it. I have a very
- 0:36sore throat. I have a runny nose. I'm sniffling.
- 0:39I'm coughing. It is bad. There was a major bug.
- 0:43that hit the area I live in right as school started
- 0:47back which I feel like is a thing like it's back
- 0:49to school season and everyone just automatically
- 0:51gets sick in the state I remember being a kid
- 0:53and I think it was my first day of middle school
- 0:55it must have been because I just it was terrible
- 0:57and I think I blocked out most of it but I remember
- 0:59being so sick my first week of going to a new
- 1:03middle school and like just being in a daze because
- 1:06I just felt horrible, just sinus -y and gross
- 1:09and what a wonderful thing to experience. What
- 1:11a time to be alive. Anyway, at the moment, I
- 1:14am battling the back -to -school crud that is
- 1:16going around. Lord knows what it is, but what
- 1:19I do know is that it is making talking not fun.
- 1:21I'm straight up not really having a good time
- 1:24with yapping and usually that's kind of my thing.
- 1:27That's kind of what I like to do. I'm Abby the
- 1:29podcast lady. I like talking and it's very hard
- 1:31for me today. It actually took me quite a bit
- 1:33of mustering up the chutzpah to be recording
- 1:37this right now i'm like i don't want to do my
- 1:39hair i don't want to move i just want to lay
- 1:41horizontal and let the sun bake whatever this
- 1:44is out of me and i'm like no i actually need
- 1:46to record this content because i didn't batch
- 1:48enough content. So I have to get this out ASAP.
- 1:53And this is proving to be a very good life lesson
- 1:56for me is always have something in the hopper.
- 1:59That's kind of the message for today. I might
- 2:01be getting ahead of myself because I'm again,
- 2:03not feeling great, but always have a backup podcast
- 2:06in your pocket, man, this is brutal. But I did
- 2:08just want to expound on the virtues of working
- 2:11ahead batching your content because cold and
- 2:13flu season is coming. My friend is a nurse and
- 2:17she's actually already been picking up extra
- 2:19shifts for the influx of cold and flu season
- 2:22patients that have been coming into the clinic
- 2:24she works at. And it's not fun. I have a couple
- 2:27of friends whose kids missed their first day
- 2:28of school because they were sick. Like it's nasty
- 2:31and life happens. Like cold and flu season is
- 2:34kind of the lesser of all evils of what can happen
- 2:38in life. There are bigger fish to fry. People
- 2:40have crises all the time. No one predicts a family
- 2:44emergency. So when that happens, you want to
- 2:46be ready for it. You want to have... things going
- 2:49as smoothly as possible on the back end so you
- 2:52aren't stuck not putting out content or not being
- 2:55prepared for something. You need to have episodes
- 2:58batched up, sitting in your back pocket, ready
- 3:00to be published when shit hits the fan, for lack
- 3:03of a better way to say it. I have luckily been
- 3:07pretty on top of things all summer. I haven't
- 3:10really scrambled to get a podcast out until now,
- 3:12and it's because life got a little busy and I
- 3:14didn't record ahead of time. And now I'm regretting
- 3:17it because now I'm sick. having to do it. So
- 3:18I just want this to be a life lesson for you
- 3:21to work ahead as much as you can. Now, how do
- 3:24you work ahead when things might feel a little
- 3:27tumultuous at times? Like I said, I'm not feeling
- 3:30great today, but I'm still batching some podcast
- 3:32episodes. I recorded one before this. It was
- 3:35an interview. I recorded another solo one. Like,
- 3:37I don't feel great, but this is the time I have
- 3:39on my calendar to do it, and I'm using it to
- 3:41its full advantage. Will I have a voice later?
- 3:44Probably not, but that's okay. I'll just sit
- 3:46quietly and suffer through that. But you want
- 3:50to be as prepared as possible because things
- 3:52can happen in the blink of an eye and being prepared
- 3:55is going to take you a long way. So the best
- 3:57way to always have something ready to record
- 4:00when you do have time to batch out that content
- 4:02is a good old -fashioned notebook. You can write
- 4:05down ideas for shows in it. You can always have
- 4:07a running note of different topics that you want
- 4:10to discuss, of different ideas that you may have
- 4:12come across in your online scrolling or in your
- 4:15travels or whatever you do on the internet or
- 4:17in real life. Have a running list of things that
- 4:19you could crank out a even five to 10 minute
- 4:22episode on. It's going to come in real handy
- 4:24when you do finally get a chance to create some
- 4:27things in bulk. If you're looking for a more
- 4:29specific way to do that, I do have my podcast
- 4:32planning journal, which I have been thriving
- 4:35with lately. I have just been cranking out ideas
- 4:38in mine left and right for a different show concept
- 4:41I've been working on. And it is so fantastic
- 4:44to be able to lay it all out with titles, with
- 4:46topics that you want to touch on. in the episode
- 4:49with guest tracking, all that sort of stuff.
- 4:52If you're looking for a podcast planning journal
- 4:54that is specific to that, where you can get your
- 4:56ideas down on paper to then turn into real life
- 4:59podcasts, you can check it out. We got the link
- 5:01in the show notes below for the Amazon version
- 5:05of that. It is super handy dandy and I've been
- 5:08getting a lot of great feedback on that too.
- 5:09So if you're one of the people who bought it
- 5:11and sent me some feedback on it, I really appreciate
- 5:13it. And I'm excited to see the shows that you
- 5:16guys crank out with it. Another thing you can
- 5:18do if you're not a pen and paper person, which
- 5:20I know some people just aren't, running note
- 5:22in your phone. of podcast ideas. Super great,
- 5:26super easy to reference. I know I have like six
- 5:28different ones. I should really organize them.
- 5:30It's a little brutal right now, but I've just
- 5:32been kind of jotting things down as they pop
- 5:34into my head. But it's so nice to have that because
- 5:36then you can just look at your calendar and say,
- 5:38I got 30 minutes. I'm going to crank out an episode
- 5:40or two right here, right now. Open up that note
- 5:43on your phone, hit record, do your episode, done.
- 5:46There you got a couple episodes sitting in your
- 5:47back pocket. Even if they're not fully edited,
- 5:49just having them recorded. Sometimes that's the
- 5:52biggest hurdle is just just like sitting down
- 5:54and pressing record, you can always edit them
- 5:56later. These ones that I'm recording right now
- 5:58for you, they're not going to get touched until
- 5:59probably next week at the earliest, but they're
- 6:03done. They're ready. They're waiting for me.
- 6:05And sometimes that's just the biggest thing is
- 6:08like mustering up the courage to sit down and
- 6:10record a show. So that works out super well.
- 6:13And if you really find yourself in a bind with
- 6:15batch recording, push comes to shove. You want
- 6:17to get an episode out, but you don't have an
- 6:19episode to put out. Look at the analytics of
- 6:22your show. and look at a show that you posted
- 6:24maybe a year ago, six months ago, something that
- 6:27you are really proud of, but you don't think
- 6:29it got the attention it deserved. You can see
- 6:32the download numbers. Maybe you posted an episode
- 6:34that you were just so proud of and it came out
- 6:36and it just wasn't the right time. There was
- 6:38some big news thing that happened this week and
- 6:40it just didn't get the attention you thought
- 6:41it deserved. Reduce, reuse, recycle, baby. Bring
- 6:44that thing back. Repost it. Put replay at the
- 6:47front or the back of the title on your RSS feed
- 6:49when you're uploading it and throw in the show
- 6:51notes that, hey, this is a replay episode. Honestly,
- 6:54you don't even need to explain yourself. You
- 6:56do not need to explain yourself. Chances are
- 6:57good your audience has not listened to every
- 6:59single one of your shows. So go ahead and post
- 7:02a replay episode. Tell them it's a replay episode
- 7:04and leave it at that. Sometimes just that extra
- 7:06week of wiggle room can save the day. So there's
- 7:09a thought. You can also do a best of episode.
- 7:11That's going to take way more work. I'm actually
- 7:12going to be doing an entire episode on best of
- 7:14episodes. That's actually what I need to record
- 7:16next after this. But just know that there are
- 7:19ways to get some content out, even if you got
- 7:22nothing in the hopper, but always try to have
- 7:24something in the hopper, man. It is going to
- 7:26come in handy from one girl battling cold and
- 7:29flu season. the next batch record your content
