- 1:42fresh off this sub big election that happened not in West Virginia but in other
- 1:47areas Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, so on and so forth. We're going
- 1:52to talk about that coming up a little bit later on State Democratic Party Chair
- 1:56and Delegate Mike Pushkin wants to weigh in. He's got a bit of a
- 1:59victory life, at least to a certain extent. Going on this morning.
- 2:01I'm going to talk about that with pushing coming up. Also, doctor Katie
- 2:05Sackebridge Valley will be stopping by as well. It's my pleasure to welcome to
- 2:07the show now delegate and now candidate again for House of Delegates, Kayla Young.
- 2:12How are you. I'm doing well. Good morning, Dave, Good
- 2:15morning listeners. How are you ken? I just compliment you on these stickers.
- 2:17Now, I know you're not able to see these right now, but
- 2:21I'm gonna hold it, Jeff, if you could put the camera on the
- 2:23Oh, that's right, we don't have a camera, but we have these.
- 2:25Nice Kayla Young. And I'm sure that you've got them posted on your
- 2:29social media. I actually saw them. I thought I saw that you posted
- 2:31these on the I posted somebody that had shared them. But I will be
- 2:36posting more information about the stickers and also koozies and how everyone can get one
- 2:40this afternoon. And they say reallect Kayla Young. And they're nice and glittery.
- 2:46They are just like me. Yes, nice, nice and glittery like
- 2:49you. Okay, So anyway, welcome to the show. Good morning.
- 2:53They've been on in a while, it's been a while. Yeah, I'm
- 2:54happy to be back. I feel very enthusiastic this morning. You came in
- 2:59like bubbling this morning always all I mean, well, no, not always.
- 3:02I mean, nobody's bubbling all the time, not during sessions. But
- 3:07but but you came in just like kind of bouncing off the walls one of
- 3:08you. Are you happy about what happened last night in the in the uh
- 3:14and and let's say Kentucky, for example, are you happy about that?
- 3:16Yeah, Kentucky was what I was expecting. I'm excited about Ohio. I
- 3:23have hope and what we can do in the future, and in terms of
- 3:25constitutional amendments and letting voters decide on big issues. And that's not necessarily the
- 3:31weight it's done in West Virginia to a certain extent. I mean, I
- 3:35want to get into a Civics lcenes, but there's a little bit of a
- 3:37difference between Ohio and Virginia. West Virginia. The weight it's done, is
- 3:39that right as far as I know, Yes, yeah, we don't have
- 3:43ballot measures in West Virginia, but we do have constitutional yeah yeah, yeah,
- 3:46we vote on those from time to time. We'll get into all that
- 3:47another show. I want to talk about your campaign. And by the way,
- 3:51I just want to say, I'm accused sometimes of being too right of
- 3:53center on the show. Let the record show it. On today's show,
- 3:57I have you in the opening segment. I've got delegate and say Democrat Party
- 4:00Chair Mike Pushkin of a last segment, I do have the nonpartisan doctor Casey
- 4:03Sackviebridge Valley as a buffer. So I just want to let everybody know that
- 4:09I'm equal opportunity here. You absolutely are. That's always been what I've found.
- 4:13I am am an equal opportunity offender, you know. I mean,
- 4:16you know, as I said, the conservative Sam too liberal liberal Sam.
- 4:18Two conservatives, So I must be doing something right, all right. So
- 4:21you had a big of that last night the Delegate Young where you announced no
- 4:26one surprise you'd be running for re election to House. I think he had
- 4:29already announced it at one point, but you did it in public there last
- 4:31night, and in the words of the late Great Mountain Their football coach Bill
- 4:34Stewart, to leave no doubts that you are running for reelection. I am.
- 4:39I'm running for reelection for my third term in the state legislature. I
- 4:42represent the fifty sixth district, which is half of South Hills, a little
- 4:46bit of South Charleston and a little bit of Saint Albans. So I want
- 4:49to talk about the difficulty being a Democrat in West Virginia right now. The
- 4:53difficulties have been well documented. Yeah, eighty three years that the Democrats controlled
- 4:58West Virginia. That change was made in the teens, and it looks like
- 5:01it's continuing to go that way, not only with voters changing their their party
- 5:06registration to either Republican or in many cases unaffiliated and independent, but also office
- 5:13holders that get in. We've had some high profile with Doug scaff you know,
- 5:16not long ago of being one of those. So with all that having
- 5:19means said, why do you remain a Democrat. I don't think you're going
- 5:25to be changing anytime soon. No, I don't intend to change my party
- 5:29anytime soon. I will say it used to be independent. I switched to
- 5:30Democrat to run for office just because those values align a little bit closer with
- 5:34my own values. But I really don't care so much about party. I
- 5:40work with everybody across the aisle. I am the only Democrat that got bills
- 5:44passed last year, and one of the only ones the two years prior to
- 5:46that. So I don't care so much about party affiliation. I think we
- 5:50spend a lot of time on it, but it's really about policy, and
- 5:54I find most people are somewhere in the middle. Anyways, The majority of
- 5:58things that get passed in the legislature in West Virginia, the ones that don't
- 6:00necessarily make the headlines because they aren't the sexy topics, are done along nonpartisan
- 6:06you know lot. I would say ninety percent of the bills that we pass
- 6:10are incredibly boring. They keep the government going, and they pass overwhelmingly with
- 6:15all of our support. Absolutely. So in your time in the House,
- 6:17and you said you'll be running for your third term. Is that right?
- 6:19So what are some of the things in the previous two that you have most
- 6:23been proud of that you have accomplished. I'm happy that you asked that.
- 6:26In the first year of twenty twenty one, so it was the first year
- 6:29after COVID, I worked to create a new form of unemployment that's voluntary for
- 6:33employers. It helps people not be laid off. It's called work sharing.
- 6:39I also my first bill that was signed into law was in West Virginia.
- 6:43Currently, veterans get business fees waived if they want to start a new business.
- 6:46We expanded that to active military as well as military spouses who have a
- 6:50very high unemployment rate. We change the definition of kidnapping, which was really
- 6:56important. I've worked on the alcohol laws. Somehow that's become one of my
- 7:00things, but I see it as economic development while also maintaining health and safety.
- 7:04In my second year, my biggest thing, and probably my biggest thing
- 7:06I've done so far, was working with leadership in both the House and the
- 7:10Senate to repeal the ban on nuclear energy. We talk a lot about energy
- 7:14security and energy and dependence. I want West Virginia to remain an energy leader
- 7:17in this country, and I think nuclear is one of the ways to do
- 7:19that, and I think it's completely safe. And then this last year,
- 7:24you probably all remember the child marriage band. That what made national news.
- 7:29So I worked a lot on that and just a lot of the bills that
- 7:31passed I have my hands on because I'm nosy. Well, you just want
- 7:35to you want to do good things. I did, all right, So
- 7:38let's talk about some of the major issues covered up here and there are all
- 7:41over the news headlines. You don't need me to tell you. Dhhr Ye,
- 7:44the prison crisis foster care. Do you feel Deli Young that Republicans haven't
- 7:49done enough in those areas? I would say so, yeah, we haven't
- 7:53had major, major foster care legislation since I've been there. I do think
- 7:56we did some good things with corrections during the special set this year that I
- 8:00was happy to support. I think there's a lot more work to be done.
- 8:03I don't know if you know, but I'm on TikTok and I like
- 8:05to explain the bills on TikTok because it's just a good way to teach people
- 8:09things. I try to do it in as nonpartisan as possible. If it's
- 8:13my opinion, I'll say so. But I realized during the crisis with the
- 8:16prisons that we kind of hurt the prison guards and the CEOs that have been
- 8:20there for a really long time. They kind of didn't get the great end
- 8:24of that deal. So I think there's a little bit more work to do
- 8:26there. And then what's been in the news lately with DHHR and with Homeland
- 8:30Security and the prisons is a big data crisis where we've been deleting people's data.
- 8:35People who are responsible for the lives of West Virginians their data is now
- 8:39gone because we don't have good data practices. And that's something I'm incredibly nerdy
- 8:43about, is data. I've introduced data bills all years that I've been in
- 8:46the legislature, and I'm going to keep doing it because it's really important to
- 8:48make sure that we keep these records because these are taxpayer dollars. Let's talk
- 8:52about Peia and I think Pushkin and how you want to talk about a little
- 8:56bit later on. But there's been a series of hearings held. I think
- 9:00there was already one held in Wheeling and Martinsburg, and by the way,
- 9:03Brad's get an in depth story about it at a wv metro news dot com.
- 9:05There are meetings upcoming. Your take on the issue with pie, because
- 9:11you know there's going to be some increases coming and it's typically typically the way
- 9:16it works in the world of politics. It's just the way it is.
- 9:18There's finger pointing. You know, if this person would have done this,
- 9:20that we wouldn't be here, and so on and so forth. Your take
- 9:24overall on the pie problem, because it's an issue. Yeah, it's absolutely
- 9:26an issue. And I came in at the tail end, right, and
- 9:30it seemed apparent that something had to be done. I did not support the
- 9:33bill that passed. I don't know the solution, though, and if I
- 9:37don't know, I'm happy to say I don't know, because I don't know
- 9:39the solution. I'm incredibly worried about people having to pay thirty percent more over
- 9:43the next three years and the spousal I saw the Finance report this last month,
- 9:48and all the numbers that they gave us originally when we were passing these
- 9:50bills were off by quite large margins, and so I'm concerned with what that's
- 9:56going to look like in terms of people having to pay way more for their
- 10:01insurance. I'm also concerned about utility bills going up. You know, going
- 10:05to the grocery store isn't easy for anybody right now. It's expensive, and
- 10:07so I'm worried about people's rising costs overall. I don't have the answer on
- 10:11Peia, but I'm just concerned for people. Well, and again, there's
- 10:16gonna be more hearings held and push can. I think we're going to talk
- 10:20about that a little bit later on. Let me I want to get back
- 10:20to your race for a moment in a time, dele get when the Democratic
- 10:26partly Party, mainly because of possibly the identity of the National Democratic Party.
- 10:31And let's face it, I mean, you're a realist, you know that.
- 10:33It's not very highly thought of in West Virginia, the identity of the
- 10:39National Party. When you're out campaigning door to door at different events and whatever,
- 10:45how do you combat that if somebody looks at you? And I know
- 10:46because they do it on the Republican side too. If you're a Republican,
- 10:50you're automatically a trumper yep. And if but when you're out, people are
- 10:52probably saying, well, Joe Biden this or Nancy Pelosi you know this,
- 10:58or AOC or whatever, how do you come or why do you address that?
- 11:01Yeah? Again, I try to talk about West Virginia and what's going
- 11:05on here. I don't feel too favorably about the National Party either, either
- 11:09one of them. Push Kit's probably gonna get mad at me for saying that,
- 11:11But I don't they say, you know, Democrats were in the state
- 11:15to the ground. I said, you're not completely wrong. It's a mess,
- 11:18and so they're not wrong. It's valid and I think we have a
- 11:22lot of work to do. I got involved because I care about helping West
- 11:24Virginia and I want to continue that and I just don't think the party matters
- 11:28that much. It's what people's values are and where they put their money.
- 11:33Well, this is not directly related to you, but I did kind of
- 11:35see if you wanted to weigh in on this last week, within last week
- 11:37and a half or so, Steve Williams, the mayor of Huntington, has
- 11:41announced that he is definitely going to be a candidate for governor. Done asking
- 11:48for an endorsement or anything like that, But your thoughts on Steve Williams.
- 11:52Steve has been wonderful as I've known him, which is not terribly well,
- 11:54but I think he's done a pretty good job at Huntington and he'll more than
- 11:58likely be the nominee. But you never never know what's going to happen,
- 12:03all right, So why should somebody give Kaylee Young another shot in the house.
- 12:05It's important to me because I think there's still a lot of work to
- 12:07be done. You know, we've lost four thousand students in Kennaugh County schools
- 12:11over the past month or the past ten years, sorry, not the past
- 12:16month. Four thousand students in Kennaugh County schools over the last ten years,
- 12:18we clearly aren't doing something right and we need to change things. We need
- 12:22to increase our workforce participation. I think I have great, reasonable ways to
- 12:26do all of these things. I'd be happy to talk to anybody about them
- 12:28anytime. But I just want to keep doing the work that I've been doing
- 12:31and keep working across the aisle and working for my constituents. Also, it's
- 12:35incredibly important to me to do constituent services. When people need help with DHHR
- 12:41or the DMV or whoever they need help with, I hope they call me.
- 12:43There was a road in my district that hadn't been paved in twenty years.
- 12:46Guess what it's paved now. I called my supervisor once a week to
- 12:50make sure that road got paved, and it finally did. It hadn't been
- 12:54paved in twenty years. It's Green Valley Road in Saint Albans. It's the
- 12:56state road and it had just been completely neglected. Well, I'm on it
- 13:00and I listen to people, and if we don't agree on issues, that's
- 13:03fine. I'm sure there is something we agree on. Do you have your
- 13:07website and for social media? I know you said you're on TikTok. So
- 13:11what else you have wor can people learn more about you? Five batch you?
- 13:13My website is Young for WV dot com and social media is Kayla Young

- 13:22a number of time or two on this it's public information. It's on the
- 13:26website. I'm happy to talk to anybody anytime, all right. And by
- 13:28the way, I think since the last time you were on the show,
- 13:31I think you got married? Did I did? I got married in September?
- 13:33Yes, congratulations? What day in September? It was September fifteenth.
- 13:37I was married by Elvis. Okay, would you like to tell that story?
- 13:41It was an Elvis wedding. It was in Las Vegas. We had
- 13:43a great time, all right. That's an a hunk of burning love for
- 13:46congratulations, Thank you, congratulations. I was married. The reason I asked
- 13:50about the day because what my anniversaries in September as well? But it's the
- 13:52nineteenth see I remembered, Oh god, you need you need to tell your
- 13:56guy to make sure that you remember the anniversary. It's very poor. You

- 18:03Great to be with you this morning. Thank you, Thank you for taking
- 18:06time out of your schedule to be And the last time you were here did
- 18:10Friday Funhouse you were my co host. Sorry, no fun, no dog
- 18:14adoption, no Chris Lawrence, and no ten questions today. Sorry, I
- 18:17know you're not going to be fun today at all. That's that's that's that
- 18:21hurt. That that hurt, Doctor sach Come on, all right, I
- 18:26have fun on Friday. I have fun. I live for fun. You
- 18:29great, You and I always have fun anyway when we hang out. All
- 18:32right, So I want to get to on Monday, you had a big
- 18:33announcement that came up. You had a press conference and different things went on
- 18:37to Montgomery on Monday. Talk about that doctor we did. We installed three
- 18:42CDL simulators in Montgomery. So it's for the commercial driver's license program. It
- 18:48also supports the alignment program because it turns out you have to have a CDL
- 18:52to be alignment. And so the simulators allow us to teach folks how to
- 18:56drive an eighteen wheeler without getting the wheel of an eighteen wheeler. Obviously you
- 19:02have to do both, but you need a lot of time. If you've
- 19:04never double clutched a shift of a stick shift before, you you'll burn out
- 19:11a clutch on a real truck if you're learning that for the first time.
- 19:14But the simulators allow you to learn it, and then we can put you
- 19:17behind the wheel of a real truck and really get you the hours you need
- 19:21so that you can test and get on the road. You know, It's
- 19:22kind of interesting because in the break there before, when we were transitioning from
- 19:26Delegate Young into you, she asked me, she said, what's doctor Sach's
- 19:30gonna talking about? And I said, well, And we had this announcement
- 19:33in Montgomery on Monday, and I talked about a little bit with her,
- 19:36and she said, we need to do what we can to make it easier
- 19:38to get a CDL license in the state of West Virginia. I don't know
- 19:42what goes into that, but it sounds like and I would think that would
- 19:45be a bipartisan thing. And that's what we're always trying to promote a little
- 19:48bit. I would think that I probably would agree with that. Yeah,
- 19:52I think anything we can do to get people into good paying jobs is a
- 19:56real win for the community. Right now, where we really need help is
- 20:03getting people interested in the program. And so if you're a person who's thinking
- 20:07this might be a good career for you, you can do your CDL training
- 20:10in as little as four weeks. It's not a huge time commitment in terms
- 20:14of training, but it can really be a great job that could change your
- 20:18life or could change your family's life. So it's worth checking out. And
- 20:21doctor Sachs, I think when people hear a CDL license, they automatically think,
- 20:23well, I'm gonna I'm going to go all bej and the Bear.
- 20:26There's an obscure reference for you, and I'm going to be driving across country.
- 20:30That's not exactly and there's some of that. Of course, that's not
- 20:33exactly what all folks that have a CDL license do on a day to day
- 20:38basis. Absolutely, and it's true you can do long hauls and some people
- 20:44really like those. They're a really good fit for some folks, But there
- 20:47are a lot of jobs that are just local that you need it. School
- 20:49bus drivers, for example, all need there is a desperate need in West
- 20:55Virginia maybe other states as well for school bus drivers right now. I mean
- 20:59they're really, really, really is yeah, And so that's local. You
- 21:02would get up and go to work at the same time that your kids go
- 21:03to school. You would work for the school district. Anybody who drives any
- 21:07of the city trucks. I know the city of Charleston desperately needs folks who
- 21:11have a CDL who can drive all kinds of different trucks for them. AEP
- 21:17hires people who are fixing the power lines, and to be able to get
- 21:22alignment job, you have to have that CDL. All of those trucks,
- 21:25every single bucket truck that fixes the electric wires around here, all those people
- 21:29need to have a CDL. Yeah, and I mean there's just such a
- 21:32needs for Again, we're talking with doctor Casey Sachs from a Bridge Valley.
- 21:34Last time we had you on the show. In addition to getting dogs adopted
- 21:37to attend questions, whatever, we also spent some time talking about some of
- 21:41the Taylor Made It training program that can help, as you say, play
- 21:48on words here bridge the skills gap. Talk about that a little bit more
- 21:51in case people may have missed another interview. Thank you. Yes, we
- 21:53design training programs to help really meet your business needs. And one of the
- 21:57things that we found in the commune is that everybody has IT needs. So
- 22:02you might have one IT person on your staff and they don't have the cybersecurity
- 22:07expertise that you realize that you need, and they're a great employee, they
- 22:10just need a few more classes to get them upskilled so that they can help
- 22:14with your cyber needs. Or you might have somebody who you know is a
- 22:17really good employee, but they need help figuring out how to do web design.
- 22:21And so what we do is we work with businesses to figure out what
- 22:26is it that you need, how do we create that opportunity for you,
- 22:29and then let's get people in those training programs. So it does we'd love
- 22:33for you to do an associate's degree in IT. That would be amazing,
- 22:36but it doesn't have to be a two year commitment. We have lots of
- 22:37short term certificates that are of real value to employers in the community. One
- 22:42of the things doctor Sachs will get into last time you were on the show
- 22:48is the fact that Bridge Valley is listening to employers as opposed to as it
- 22:52was years ago. When you just know you put people in not I mean
- 22:56Bridge Valley specifically, but no matter what the institution of higher learning is.
- 23:00You get people in the classroom and then you send them out into the workforce
- 23:02and say good luck. You're actually setting down with employers in the area,
- 23:07many of them from Toyota on down and saying, Okay, what is it
- 23:10that you need. How can we work with these students to get them better
- 23:15acclimated to be ready to go to work. That's right. We really value
- 23:18our employers. We can't do the work that we're doing without them, and
- 23:22so anything we can do to do more cost effective training or customized training.
- 23:26We have a grant program that we work with with employers. It's called Learn
- 23:30and Learn, and we jointly the college and the employer go together to the
- 23:33state to apply for money so that we can split wages for students. So
- 23:37that if you're an employer, lets you could do this, Dave. You
- 23:41might need somebody to do accounting for the radio station, then we could split
- 23:45wages and you could hire a student who's working on their book keeping and so
- 23:49they're not fully trained up yet. So you're taking a risk of the employer,
- 23:52but we're splitting the wages with you, and so you give students really
- 23:56authentic work experience and then people are more like to hire them in the long
- 24:00term. Well, and again, during the last time you were on the
- 24:03show, Doctor Sacks, you talked about that about how many of these people
- 24:06if you and use the radio station for example, we use somebody here,
- 24:10they kind of job waiting and they are they already know where the key to
- 24:11the loshroom is here, you know, so they're ready to go to work,
- 24:15and you already know you like them. You've had an opportunity to onboard
- 24:19them. And a lot of our students need that work experience because more and
- 24:23more we see in job postings, you know, you have to have a
- 24:26degree or you have to have the work experience, and if you don't have
- 24:30either, how do you break into that system? And so we make sure
- 24:33we're getting people that work experience alongside with the skills training that they need so
- 24:37that they're really prepared to work in the community. What's on the horizon since
- 24:41the last time we talked, what are you looking at. What are you
- 24:44working on? What do you got? We just this week submitted a grant
- 24:48to help support our manufacturing program. We're trying to do anything we can really
- 24:52to get people interested in advanced manufacturing technology. We are the education provider for
- 24:59West Virginia's only FAME chapter. So FAME is the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education,
- 25:04and it's a consortium of employers in manufacturing that are saying, we need
- 25:08students who have these AMP jobs and AMP skills, and so let's figure out
- 25:14how to get more students into the Bridge Valley program. So we're really looking
- 25:18at lots of ways that we can expand that and get more people interested in
- 25:21manufacturing. It's not quite as easy a job to pitch as commercial driver's license
- 25:26or nursing because people immediately know what those are. AMT sounds a little more
- 25:30foreign, but they're some of the best jobs in our community. You can
- 25:33start getting paid eighty thousand dollars a year with a two year degree. I've
- 25:38got some text here for you. Are you ready to go? This is
- 25:41not ten questions? These are legitimate now on something I didn't make cup.
- 25:45We do have a text here for the fruit pharmacy text line. It says,
- 25:48tell President Sachs, she's awesome. Ask where the funding for the CDL
- 25:52trainers come from? That thinks that's a great question, and thank you for
- 25:57the compliment. I sincerely appreciate it. I know that you could talk in
- 26:00text at the same time, but go ahead. Very funny. The CDL
- 26:06training dollars came from a congressional earmark. Senator Manson's office helped us get it.
- 26:11It actually went to the State Community College System office and then they were
- 26:15able to bring us the fund so that we could put those trainers in.
- 26:18All right, So I hope that answered the question where can people learn more
- 26:21about all the different exciting stuff you got going on at Bridge Valley, doctor
- 26:26Sacks. Certainly, our website is a great resource. It's Bridge Valley dot
- 26:30edu. If you're a company that's interested in doing any of the work based
- 26:33learning stuff that we mentioned today, try Bridge Valley dot edu forward slash Apprenticeships.
- 26:40And then, of course we have a Facebook page and an Instagram page,
- 26:42and you're welcome to contact us through those as well if that's the form
- 26:45of communication you like better. All right, Doctor Sachs, keep doing good
- 26:49stuff. We'll have you on again soon. I appreciate it. Thanks a
- 26:52lot, Thank you so much. Dave. Great to talk to you as
- 26:53well, Doctor Casey Sachs from Bridge Valley. It is twenty six minutes away
- 26:57from tan Hey. We're brought to you apart by General Hardware and Lumber of

- 27:15Lumber of Windfield. Let me not I got some text here going back to
- 27:18the show yesterday. Texas. Sure, Biden may be a bumbling old man,
- 27:22but Trump is psychotic and just as old and as senile as JB.
- 27:27According to a text. Okay, that's way too I appreciate when people send
- 27:34me these texts, but something I got to read off the air. I
- 27:37can't read something that is that long on the air. I will read the
- 27:41last part of it, though, Texas, David's despicable when the guy who's
- 27:45in the office does not respect the office Biden comes across as an angry old
- 27:48man. This is kind of going back to some of the things we talked
- 27:52about on the show yesterday, Texas, Dave, what I don't understand is
- 27:59in Potier or not, why would anyone choose Trump for anything? Americas are
- 28:03asking for trouble if mister Trump is elected again. I don't like Joe Biden
- 28:07a lot either, but he's a lot better than Trump. According to a
- 28:12texture text says Trump forgot he was in a courtroom on Monday and tried to
- 28:19do a rally. Trump forgot he was in the courtroom. I tried to
- 28:22do a maggot type rally. The judge had to remind him many times to
- 28:26stop giving speeches and just answer the questions. And it's going back on to
- 28:32Monday. All right, We're going to take a break. It is twenty

- 32:08every Wednesday at five Texas says Ohio and Virginia voters voted with some sense yesterday.
- 32:15Best wishes to them that the conservatives in their states don't screw up what
- 32:20they voted for, like what Virginia Republicans did with legal cannabis. Too bad
- 32:24us here in West Virginior SOCO politicians like Craig Blair, who wants to execute
- 32:28drug dealers, bam gay marriage, and institute Christian Sharia law Texas where it
- 32:34is Ohio, Republicans are going to attempt to overturn the voter choices on legal
- 32:37abortion in legal cannabis. So much for Republicans respecting and representing their voters choices.
- 32:42I guess voting doesn't matter in Republican states. Mister Michael Ari Pushkin,
- 32:51that that is my name day. What's your middle name? Alan? Oh?
- 32:54Okay, then what's your last name? You're confused. I'm just staying
- 32:58I know what your last time. I was just joking. I don't way
- 33:00to confuse your listeners. Yeah it's Dave. Anyway, voting does Collie,
- 33:06there's an obs reference we uh we yeah, we saw last night. The
- 33:12voting really does matter. And even in uh in states where there are Republican
- 33:16super majorities, Democrats can still pull off a huge win over in our our
- 33:22neighbor, Kentucky, which Kentucky is a barely read state, the state that
- 33:27brought you Rand Paul and the state that brought you Mitch McConnell just re elected
- 33:31a very good governor and and the reason Andy Basheer was re elected and by
- 33:36by such a pretty comfortable margin. Is because he's a good governor and people
- 33:39like him. He's done a good job. Why do I see you were
- 33:42out door knocking? I did, I do you know? Ashland's not too
- 33:45far from here, and I went over there on a weekend and uh and
- 33:47knocked on some doors for the entire republic, well for the entire democratics late
- 33:52hello, yeah, the percent democratics. The percentage was like I think fifty
- 33:58three to forty eight percent. And that comfortable, pretty comfortable margin. That's
- 34:01because that's that is, ah, you know, because of the job that
- 34:06he has done. And I noticed that even in in in eastern Kentucky where
- 34:10I went and some of the counties that were really ravaged by floods over the
- 34:15past several years. Uh, he did extremely well there. And I think
- 34:17it's because of of Governor Basher's response to crisis and his handling of floods and
- 34:23the damage to the by the floods. You know, Unlike you know,
- 34:27our governor where we had the problems with the Rise program, where the money
- 34:30wasn't getting where it needed to go. Andy Basher did a very good job
- 34:35with flood relief and that's what helped win him the election because he does his
- 34:38job one thing in Kentucky. That's but the I believe the widest margin of
- 34:46victory in any state wide race in Kentucky was I believe. His name is
- 34:50Michael Adams. He's a Republican Secretary of State. And what's remarkable about a
- 34:53Republican like Michael Adams, he's really pushed back against the Trump conspiracy, theorist
- 35:00that claimed the election was rigged, and he's really, as Secretary of State
- 35:02and chief election officer, he's pushed backed against that and he's told the truth
- 35:06and he was rewarded for it. He had the widest margin. I would
- 35:08say that our secretary of State might want to take some lessons from him.
- 35:13Tex says, women sent a big message to the GOP last night. You're
- 35:15not going to take their rights away and they're not going to be silenced in
- 35:20the workplace or the churches. Yeah. I agree. I think there was
- 35:23overwhelming victories in Ohio for the Constitutional Amendment, the ballot initiative that protected a
- 35:30woman's right to choose, and I think that I would like to see us
- 35:35put it on the ballot here in West Virginia. I've urged my Republican counterparts
- 35:39to let the people decide. I think that's what When Roe was overturned,
- 35:43there was a lot of talk by national Republican leaders, well, this should
- 35:45be decided by the states. Well, let's let West Virginians decide, like
- 35:49they did last night in Ohio. I don't think they want of course,
- 35:52of course they don't want that because they'll lose, just like in every single
- 35:53other state, even in Montana read Montana, when the voters had had their
- 36:00right to choose, to protect a woman's right to choose, they overwhelmingly won
- 36:04in Montana as well. They won in Kansas, they won in Michigan.
- 36:07I can go. There's any state where it's been on the ballot. People
- 36:10spoke up and they don't want a complete ban on a woman's right to choose,
- 36:15like the legislature did in West Virginia. And now people will say,
- 36:17oh, they voted in twenty eighteen. In twenty eighteen was a different question.
- 36:21Twenty eighteen involved Medicare fund, Medicaid funded. You're right, different question,
- 36:24you know, And did you say I was right? Yes? And
- 36:28I didn't say that you're not wrong. I don't disagree. No, no,
- 36:31no, no, you're right on that. I was talking this morning,
- 36:36Mike, to one of the leading Republicans of the legislature, and he
- 36:38asked not to be named because anything brow bows and courage. Well, he
- 36:44wants to get re elected at some point, and he asked, maybe should
- 36:47want to do his job. He asked me this morning. He and I
- 36:50were having a discussion this morning and he said, what do the results from
- 36:54last night and all have in common? I immediately said Trump. He said,
- 36:58no abortion, he said, and as a this was his take as
- 37:01a Republican. As you know, the Republican super duper majority copyright Dave.
- 37:06Now we have to get beyond that and realize that that's the common denominator in
- 37:12all It's not so. I thought it was a little more Trump. It's
- 37:15not. It's not just Trump your party, Dave. The Republican Party has
- 37:17been running on it for a year are well, But they've banned it in
- 37:23West Virginia. It's a the exceptions don't exist in reality. There are no
- 37:29exceptions that actually take place in reality. It's a complete ban in West Virginia.
- 37:32Now, even in Florida, they had a debate over whether it's a
- 37:36six week ban or a ten week ban. It's a zero week ban.
- 37:39In West Virginia. Women have absolutely no right to choose. Uh. It's
- 37:45not a decision left between them and their doctor. It was a decision that
- 37:47was made for them by really a bunch of old white guys in the legislature.
- 37:52I want to go to Ohio just for a moment, and we got
- 37:55some other things I want to get into as well. At Ohio, voters
- 37:59Mike overwhelming the past a constitutional amendment that keeps abortion legal up to twenty three
- 38:01weeks for pregnancy. We talked about that, but you can now smoke your
- 38:07weed in Ohio. Ohio becomes the twenty fourth state to legalize recreational marijuana.
- 38:12That vote fifty seven to forty three percent. Interesting fact, the referendum on
- 38:16abortion one outright in eighteen counties that Trump carried in twenty twenty. And I
- 38:22keep kind of going back to the abortion thing. But your thought on the
- 38:25recreational marijuana, I think I would say that Ohio voters spoke loudly on the
- 38:30side of freedom yesterday, freedom to choose and freedom for adults to make decisions
- 38:37for themselves. I'd say freedom won in Ohio. Now to Virginia the Democrats.
- 38:43Virginia, the Democrats flipped the House and kept control of the state Senate.
- 38:46Mainly according to people, but I was reading some papers and some whatnot
- 38:53from Virginia this morning, mainly because of abortion rights. I would say that
- 38:59has a lot to do with I think that the Republicans have gone way too
- 39:01far. They're the proverbial dog that catches the car. They've been running on
- 39:07this for years, and then you know, after President Trump was able to
- 39:10pack the courts and an overturn row and in many states so they've they've passed
- 39:17the Republicans have passed outright bands and other states where they were attempting to pass
- 39:23out right bands the voters. When the voters had a chance to speak up,
- 39:27they spoke up, and they spoke loudly. And I think really the
- 39:30last election in Virginia was an anomaly when Republicans briefly took back the House of
- 39:37Delegates. I think Virginia is trending more and more democratic. I think people
- 39:42like the results that they had back when they had the democratic governor with the
- 39:45Democratic legislature. They actually did some very good things in Virginia, and now
- 39:51you have a really good safeguard against some of the radical policies of their Republican
- 39:55governor Texas. Please ask mister Pushkin if it's possible to get an abortion and
- 40:00referendum on the ballot without going through the legislature. I don't think that's possible.
- 40:04It has to go through the legislature. But I'm we're going to draft
- 40:07one, and we think that the people should have a right to vote on
- 40:08it that How can you argue against that? Giving people the right to speak
- 40:15up and make these determinations for themselves. It should be on the ballot.
- 40:20Let's put it on the ballot. And I challenged my Republican colleagues in the
- 40:22legislature to simply let the people decide. What's wrong with that? So America
- 40:28Tech, says Governor basheer One, because of the great job he's done with
- 40:30being there during the disasters. Mike, you said that interesting how the other
- 40:35top officers went Republican, says a Text. Well, it's I mean they
- 40:38have there's a Republican supermajority in Kentucky. Kentucky as the state. I said
- 40:44before, it brought you Rand Paul, it brought you Thomas Massey. It's
- 40:47brought you, Mitch McConnell. It's a pretty Republican state. The fact that
- 40:52Andy Bsheer won Governor Basheer won and won by such a comfortable margin as really
- 40:58it speaks to the type of job that he does. And he's not a
- 41:00real political guy. If you can have a non political politician political politician,
- 41:06that's Andy Basheer. He just gets the job done, and that says you
- 41:08know what gives That tells me what we can do in West Virginia as well.
- 41:13Yes, we have a super majority in both houses of the legislature.
- 41:17We don't have any officeholders in the Board of Public Works. But we get
- 41:21the right person for the job and people who someone that people can trust and
- 41:24know we'll do a good job, then we can win some of these state
- 41:29wide races as well. I think that that election last night could bode well
- 41:34for my friend Mayor Williams from Huntington who's running for governor, and he could
- 41:37also bode well for Senator Mansion if he chooses to run for reelection. Tech
- 41:40says for Pushkin, please, I agree with the woman's right to control their
- 41:45own healthcare. However, I can't understand abortion, and we're the rights of
- 41:49the child. Explain, Please help me as a man understand, says a
- 41:52Texter. Well, I mean that for fifty years women have had a right
- 41:58to choose in this country, and generally people don't like when you take rights
- 42:01away from them. And that's what you're seeing now. It was a hypothetical
- 42:06for years when you had Roe protecting reproductive rights for years, and then the
- 42:10Trump courts took that away, and now it's no longer a hypothetical. We're
- 42:15talking about rights being taken away. And you know what I've heard in politics
- 42:20I think might have been Senator Bird said, people will forget what you did
- 42:23for him, but they'll never forget what you took away. And this Supreme
- 42:28Court and the Republican legislatures across the country and especially in West Virginia have taken
- 42:32rights away from women Texas. The Dobbs decision woke up the slumbering majority.
- 42:37It may just revive the Democratic Party. I doubt that was the intent of
- 42:40Trump, McConnell, etc. When they stole two Supreme Court seats. I
- 42:45agree, Tick says, don't overlook the Loudon County Virginia school board election.
- 42:50Democrats kept a majority because people hate book bands and attacks on LGBTQ lives with
- 42:55TikTok Heritage Foundation, et cetera, et cetera. They are a threat to
- 43:01democracy. Talking about young and youngin and some of the others there, I
- 43:05think people are generally good and want to stand up for basic human rights and
- 43:09generally push back against extreme policies. You know, for years the Democrats have
- 43:15been have let we've let ourselves be defined by Republicans as being too extreme and
- 43:20out of step with with with with regular folks here in America. And I
- 43:23say nothing is further from the truth. It's the Republican policies that are now
- 43:29being seen is so extreme. When you see complete absolute bans on abortion or
- 43:34or or book banning. Most people are not for censorship or or attacking people
- 43:39simply because of who they are, what they look like, or how they
- 43:42pray. Texas Pushkin's line, why don't you call him out on it?
- 43:45Don't let him get away with it. In West Virginia, you can still
- 43:47get an abortion to say the life of a mother, or in cases of
- 43:51rape and insects, yes you cannot. It's that the exceptions are in paper,
- 43:54but they don't exist in reality, I was there when the law was
- 43:58written. If they don't exist, Tech says, women have no right to
- 44:01choose to killing in us a baby, and I'm proud to be on the
- 44:04right side of that moral issue. We will all be judged by our creator
- 44:07one day. Pushkin can't speak the rights of the baby because it harms his
- 44:12argument. He avoids a question. I think that women have a right to
- 44:15make the decision early in a pregnancy. They have that right to make the
- 44:19decision, but with their healthcare professional and who should not be part of the
- 44:22equation politicians that should not be making decisions those types of personal decisions for people.
- 44:29Tech says, don't congratulate Ohioans yet on getting to freely consume cannabis.
- 44:32Republicans will try their best to screw themselves out of tax money and to show
- 44:37others what voting means to Republicans. You know you brought up earlier when you
- 44:42were talking to Delegate Young about PIA. So what is the solution? Well,
- 44:46Ohio might have found a possible solution. All right, Well, you're
- 44:50going to have some extra tax dollars coming in there, which as they have
- 44:52allowed adults to make that determination for themselves and legalize cannabis for adult use.
- 44:59That would be way to find a permanent funding stream for PIA so you don't
- 45:02have to keep raising it and putting the premium increases on the backs of our
- 45:07state workers who the governor promised he would not raise their premiums and he broke
- 45:12his prom. I want to talk about people talk about that. We're going

- 47:30with Pushkin. Old men who ain't got a dog in the hunt should not
- 47:35be making reproductive decisions for young women. No uterus, no vote, says
- 47:38a Texter. Let's talk about pea or you did a little bit there.
- 47:44As I mentioned earlier, there's been these hearings across the state of West Virginia.
- 47:47They were in Wheeling Monday night, in Martinsburg last night, Tomorrow night,
- 47:52Morgantown Monday. Here in Charleston Old Field Tuesday, and virtual hearing next
- 47:55Wednesay. Where's the one in Charleston Gonna be hell at the Culture Center Theater
- 47:59on the Appital Complex. Unfortunately they scheduled it while the Legislature will be in
- 48:02Wheeling for interims. And I always make it a point to attend those hearings,
- 48:07even as public hearings, even in years where there are no premium increases
- 48:12like in the past several years. But this year I believe it'll be much
- 48:15I believe it'll be well attended because there's quite a substantial premium increase on our
- 48:22on our public employees this year. And this is just you know, a
- 48:24couple of short years after the governor said in a press conference he would absolutely
- 48:30there would absolutely be no premium increases on his watch. He even said that
- 48:36a meteor would have to strike the Earth in order for him to sign a
- 48:40bill raising premiums on our on our state workers. Well, I missed it
- 48:45when the media hit because he signed it. The legislature pushed it and he
- 48:49signed it. Now people are starting to see they're getting paid less. And
- 48:52now the legislature did this to add insult to injury. The very same week
- 48:58that they voted to increase health costs on state workers, they voted to give
- 49:02themselves a significant pay raise. So they took money away from state workers and
- 49:07gave it to themselves. They're saying of arrogance. What a lot of the
- 49:12legislators are saying is that the current plan simply is not sustainable because of a
- 49:17lack of prior and I will answer the question, because of a lack of
- 49:21priorities, and they don't fund it. That's why, because you have to
- 49:25make tough decisions when you're in when you're in a position of power, and
- 49:29sometimes you have to you have to create permanent funding streams for something that's important,
- 49:35like taking care of the people who take care of us. You know,
- 49:37when you go into a job in the public sector, often you're told,
- 49:39you know what, the pay is not great. And you know why
- 49:42you're told that, Dave, because the pay is not great, but the
- 49:45benefits always made up for it. Now they don't. The benefits are not
- 49:47that great and the pay is not that great, And then we wonder why
- 49:51we have a shortage of teachers in this state. We wonder why we can't
- 49:53find people to work for child protective services taking care of the most vulnerable members
- 49:57of our society. We wonder why we can't find actional officers at our prisons.
- 50:00It's because we continue to treat them like this and instead of making tough
- 50:07decisions and creating a permanent funding stroom for Peia like Ohio might have done yesterday
- 50:14when the people spoke up and leed adults to legally purchased cannabis, that could
- 50:17be sales tax that could go to something like PIA. Right now, we
- 50:22charged for severance tax on natural gas. It's less than the sales tax that
- 50:28we charge people when they go buy clothes. It could be a slight increase
- 50:31of that. The consumer would never feel it, and you could take care
- 50:34of the people who take care of us our state work. We got a
- 50:36text here about Department Highways. It's something that you have talked about on the
- 50:38show in the past. Tell mister Pushkin. I called the DH to talk
- 50:42to an engineer that I know and found that he had left the Department of
- 50:44Highways. There won't be a Department of Highways soon. Your Texter is absolutely
- 50:49correct. A lot of engineers are leaving there in droves because of the mismanagement
- 50:52and the corruption at the top at the Department of Transportation, and we're hearing
- 50:55more and more about it each week. All right, So Texas for Pushkin,
- 51:00at what stage of pregnancy do you feel abortion should be banned? I
- 51:02feel that I'm not a medical professional. I'm an elected official, and I'd
- 51:07like for us to stay out of it and allow that to be a decision
- 51:09between a woman and her doctor, because there's a lot of other things that
- 51:14can go into It's not an easy decision that people make, but sometimes things
- 51:16go wrong in the pregnancy, and that should be a personal decision that's left
- 51:20between the woman and her doctor. Tex says our country was founded on Christian
- 51:25values and joyce sodom, I mean America. Why at last, tick talk
- 51:30TikTok. According into a texture, those who think abortions the sin should read
- 51:36numbers five eleven thirty one. According to a text or final text, it
- 51:39takes two people to make a baby. Why don't men have a saying abortion?
- 51:43I have a friend who was with a woman for years. She just
- 51:45went and got an abortion. Didn't tell him about it till it was too
- 51:47late. I think that the parents should have a say so, I said,
- 51:52who shouldn't have a say? So? Are are politicians? All right?
- 51:55What's on your agenda? What are you looking at it? You got
- 51:58interims next week? What do you get? I would love to be here
- 52:00for the public hearing. I would urge people to attend the public hearing.
- 52:04I believe the sign up for the speakers is at five o'clock. The public
- 52:07hearing starts at six and that's at the Culture Center theater next month on the
- 52:09Beautiful Capital Complex on the east end of Charleston. And that's next Monday at
- 52:15six o'clock. Is the here? All right? Mike ols A pleasure,
- 52:17Thank you so much. Thanks for having me on. Delegate Kaylee Young,
- 52:21I appreciate hering Doctor Casey Sachs as well. Coming up on the show tomorrow,
