- 0:00Speaker 1: Coming up on this week's episode of Hip Hop Now Podcast,
- 0:05Speaker 1: Complex releases a hip hop media power ranking list.
- 0:12Speaker 2: I'm not on it.
- 0:15Speaker 1: My review of Azy's latest album Do Wade three and
- 0:21Speaker 1: did the Boomback Resurgence Peak a few years ago?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Let's do it. Welcome to jip Hop Now Pop. If
- 0:37Speaker 2: you from the future, you know what the STUDI show
- 0:39Speaker 2: as out of so disrespect the legs.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Like hip hop is said to stay.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Let's get rightful to the business. What up, y'all?
- 0:51Speaker 1: I A'm your host Vegas and this is hip Hop
- 0:54Speaker 1: Now Podcast podcast specifically designed to keep you caught up
- 0:59Speaker 1: on all things pop music and culture that happened through
- 1:02Speaker 1: the week. Big shout out to those who have been
- 1:05Speaker 1: listening in audio form for ten plus years. Obviously, twenty
- 1:14Speaker 1: twenty six is the ten year anniversary of Hip Hop
- 1:18Speaker 1: Now Podcast.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I'm kind of.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Making it that because technically it's been around a little
- 1:24Speaker 1: bit longer than that, probably closer to twelve or thirteen
- 1:29Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken. But what you have to understand
- 1:34Speaker 1: at that time, I was just doing it to do it,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and I didn't really know if I wanted to continue.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I was trying to make it like a series, right
- 1:45Speaker 1: like with seasons, and then I was just gonna be like,
- 1:48Speaker 1: all right enough. But at some point I started to
- 1:53Speaker 1: take it a little bit more serious and you know,
- 1:56Speaker 1: update equipment and blah blah blah. So I look at
- 1:59Speaker 1: that point in the podcast where content mattered to me,
- 2:07Speaker 1: and you know, I just started to refine things. So
- 2:09Speaker 1: I look at that as the like twenty sixteen, the
- 2:13Speaker 1: time being when I really really started to like do
- 2:17Speaker 1: this podcasting, because truth be told, I've been podcasting even
- 2:21Speaker 1: longer than that to my early podcast, you know what
- 2:25Speaker 1: I'm saying. So as you see the logo the background,
- 2:31Speaker 1: the merch all represents ten years of Hip Hop Now
- 2:35Speaker 1: podcasts and if you want to get any of that stuff,
- 2:39Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying.
- 2:40Speaker 2: The logo items go.
- 2:41Speaker 1: From T shirts to hoodies to hats, cups all I think,
- 2:45Speaker 1: iPhone cases or whatever everything, So check that out. The
- 2:52Speaker 1: link to my store is in the description of this episode,
- 2:56Speaker 1: I think, but it's Tea Public, So just look for
- 2:59Speaker 1: Vegas World and see on te Public and then you'll
- 3:02Speaker 1: find my store, including vintage logos. Right, I had a
- 3:06Speaker 1: couple of logos over time, and you know, some stuck,
- 3:11Speaker 1: others did you know, so there you have it. Also,
- 3:14Speaker 1: shout out to everybody watching on YouTube if you would
- 3:17Speaker 1: like to become a member of the channel and help
- 3:20Speaker 1: promote the channel, help like pour into the production. Trust me,
- 3:26Speaker 1: there are podcasters who you know, they get a lot
- 3:30Speaker 1: of support as far as members, so you know they
- 3:34Speaker 1: have full on studios and stuff like that. But for me,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I have what works, right. I got a four K camera,
- 3:40Speaker 1: now cool, I got a little mic. The mic will
- 3:42Speaker 1: be updated. But I'm combining your support with my money
- 3:50Speaker 1: in order to do bigger things. So bigger things are
- 3:54Speaker 1: around the corner. But again, if you would like to
- 3:57Speaker 1: become a member, it's in the description. You could be
- 4:00Speaker 1: a one off you know, here you go, he go
- 4:03Speaker 1: five hours, you know, put an ad up something like
- 4:06Speaker 1: that which is in the works. Or you can become
- 4:09Speaker 1: a sustaining member, where that means month to month you
- 4:13Speaker 1: donate to the podcast. And again, can't say it enough.
- 4:16Speaker 1: All proceeds that I receive have always gone back into
- 4:22Speaker 1: the production of the podcast. So if you like this
- 4:24Speaker 1: content and you would like to see it grow in
- 4:28Speaker 1: different ways and get different content and exclusive content which
- 4:31Speaker 1: is on the way, definitely, definitely think about becoming a member.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But that being said, a big shout out to hip
- 4:43Speaker 1: hopdx dot com, which I don't know if they still
- 4:47Speaker 1: kind of exist, but some of the things I've seen
- 4:50Speaker 1: on their site influenced some of my thoughts here and
- 4:53Speaker 1: also Complex and places like that where I get some
- 4:57Speaker 1: of my stories from Le's get right into the business,
- 5:01Speaker 1: same all right, off the top off the rip. Complex
- 5:09Speaker 1: put out a list. And I know when when you
- 5:12Speaker 1: say Complex put out a less man, it's like, it's
- 5:16Speaker 1: like who number one? Well, this list is different. It's
- 5:20Speaker 1: called the hip Hop Media Power Ranking, the twenty twenty
- 5:24Speaker 1: six edition. Now I don't follow Complex enough to know
- 5:30Speaker 1: who was last year's number one and all that, because honestly,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I don't care. Okay, I'm better than all put me
- 5:38Speaker 1: on their podcast, you'll see. I'm just saying, you put
- 5:43Speaker 1: me with Jada in Fat Joe. You can put me
- 5:46Speaker 1: in whatever that room or bunker. I don't even know
- 5:50Speaker 1: if I want to be there with academics again, but
- 5:56Speaker 1: we're going to We're going to talk about it, all right.
- 5:59Speaker 1: So Complex's complex fourth annual hip Hop Media Power Rankings
- 6:03Speaker 1: here and in the year with no dominant stars and
- 6:07Speaker 1: no breakout moments, the people shaping raps conversation matter more
- 6:13Speaker 1: than ever. I totally totally agree with that last part.
- 6:18Speaker 1: The people shaping raps conversation matter more than ever. And
- 6:22Speaker 1: you know why I say that because I feel like,
- 6:26Speaker 1: and old heads may not like this, but remember when
- 6:30Speaker 1: the DJ was the influencer.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Remember when.
- 6:35Speaker 1: The host on the radio show was the influencer because
- 6:38Speaker 1: they had the scoop on the music from your favorite artists,
- 6:41Speaker 1: on new artists and things like that. Now in this podcast,
- 6:48Speaker 1: hip hop media culture, specifically online, specifically video based, it's
- 6:55Speaker 1: sort of like those are the places you go to
- 6:59Speaker 1: stay updated, right, including this one. Right, Like, I know
- 7:03Speaker 1: there's people who watch me but also watch other content creators,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and I feel like that's almost more powerful than the
- 7:14Speaker 1: artists who are now capable of having a podcast or
- 7:20Speaker 1: doing a live stream. It just is, honestly, And not
- 7:25Speaker 1: to say that we can't just watch the artists, but
- 7:28Speaker 1: if you can go to a platform and get informed
- 7:31Speaker 1: on the things you care about from a hip hop perspective,
- 7:35Speaker 1: it's no longer the radio. It's online. So with that
- 7:39Speaker 1: being said, and radio is still around, but you know
- 7:42Speaker 1: it strolling. With that being said, this list so let's
- 7:46Speaker 1: let's say this real quick. I want to read so
- 7:49Speaker 1: we can have some context. I'm going to read their
- 7:52Speaker 1: complex's key takeaways. Real Quick Complexes twenty twenty six Hip
- 7:58Speaker 1: Hop Media Power ranking maps who really moves the conversation.
- 8:03Speaker 2: In a year where rap.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Has no dominant stars or over arching storylines, the media
- 8:08Speaker 1: figures matter the most. The list now ranks not just
- 8:13Speaker 1: individual personalities, but also platforms like the Art of Dialogue,
- 8:18Speaker 1: which I subscribe to that channel I started watching Vlad
- 8:22Speaker 1: a long time ago. The Art of Dialogue is the
- 8:26Speaker 1: same format as Flag gets the same people for the
- 8:31Speaker 1: most part, that Flag could get. But it's a brother. Okay,
- 8:36Speaker 1: so I'm just saying. A complex also added writers to
- 8:39Speaker 1: the mix. Okay, okay, writers Pulling up power here means
- 8:46Speaker 1: cultural influence who can spark and steer viral rap debates.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Everyone on the list was also asked to provide a
- 8:55Speaker 1: temperature check on the genre, what they love about rap
- 9:00Speaker 1: right now, and what they hate. Find their responses below
- 9:04Speaker 1: so you can go to the page and check all
- 9:06Speaker 1: that out. I just want to see who is in
- 9:11Speaker 1: the top five, because we don't got a lot of time. Man,
- 9:13Speaker 1: we going guys A lot of times. It's about thirty
- 9:16Speaker 1: five people on this list. So we're skipping through and
- 9:20Speaker 1: I've seen a couple of people who I think the
- 9:23Speaker 1: list is a little thorough, a couple of people who
- 9:25Speaker 1: I definitely watch as I continue to go. Wow, I
- 9:29Speaker 1: just scroll past Constana and I am not in the
- 9:32Speaker 1: top five. Now I'm really interested. Okay, brows too high.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I just saw him pass, but he's way too high. Okay, Okay,
- 9:40Speaker 1: this list is gonna be different. It's gonna be very different.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Starting at number five, Charlemagne, the God. Okay, well, I
- 9:52Speaker 1: will say this. Charlemagne does have a lot of influence,
- 9:59Speaker 1: but I really feel like it's faded. And I'm not
- 10:04Speaker 1: talking about whatever he does money wise. I know he
- 10:07Speaker 1: probably still making deals and all that. I'm just talking
- 10:09Speaker 1: about the cultural heartbeat. Like y'all watching Charlemagne like that,
- 10:15Speaker 1: I'm not.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Maybe it's just me. All right, let's go to number four. Wow.
- 10:23Speaker 1: This I did not anticipate Fat Joe and Jadakiss at
- 10:28Speaker 1: number four ahead. Now, I don't think they should be
- 10:31Speaker 1: ahead of Charlemagne. I think this is a popularity thing.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I think Charlomagne has more influence than Fat Joe and Jadakiss,
- 10:42Speaker 1: but I think people like their show. One thing I
- 10:46Speaker 1: do like about because I don't really watch, but one
- 10:50Speaker 1: thing I do based off of the clips I've seen.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I love the fact that when they bring somebody on
- 10:56Speaker 1: their previewing music, I love it.
- 11:00Speaker 2: It. It's like radio, right, It's like radio.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I just can't sit there and listen to Fat Yo
- 11:06Speaker 1: talk and lie the whole time, So it should have
- 11:09Speaker 1: been a Locks podcast. But I get it all right.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Number three DJ Vlad. You knew this was gonna happen.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Y'all still watching, y'all still subscribed, y'all still complaining, but
- 11:23Speaker 1: you're still watching. Flag should absolutely be in the top five.
- 11:28Speaker 1: You know why because all those i'm a boycott him,
- 11:32Speaker 1: I ain't listening. I did it, okay, because what am
- 11:34Speaker 1: I gonna lose? I don't care, right, But there's so
- 11:38Speaker 1: many people who still watch, even content creators that kind
- 11:42Speaker 1: of like was going at Vlad. They still check out
- 11:45Speaker 1: his stuff, And I don't care if you don't hit
- 11:47Speaker 1: subscribe button the minute you press play, chit ching, you're
- 11:52Speaker 1: supporting Vlad the minute you press play. Now, you can't
- 11:55Speaker 1: help if things is on your feed and they just
- 11:57Speaker 1: happen right or you get but you can so tell
- 12:01Speaker 1: them to mute DJ vladd. A lot of people just
- 12:04Speaker 1: don't do it because he's still getting content that they
- 12:08Speaker 1: want to see. So he should be in the top three.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Number two Joe Budden, Yeah, I could influence popularity.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Didn't miss a beat really.
- 12:23Speaker 1: When Rory Maul left the show and they're outside of
- 12:27Speaker 1: the top five by the way, Yeah, I can't argue this.
- 12:33Speaker 1: And I feel like Joe's only ahead of lad because
- 12:38Speaker 1: he doesn't have that you know, police thing would have
- 12:42Speaker 1: having people on the podcast, you know, rating on themselves
- 12:46Speaker 1: and other people. So yeah, but it's interesting who's number one?
- 12:52Speaker 1: And I think I know it is DJ Academics. I mean,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I'll say this, I don't subscribe to DJ Academics. I
- 13:06Speaker 1: don't instantly make him an adversary because of where he
- 13:11Speaker 1: fell within the battle and how much he claises Drake,
- 13:15Speaker 1: which is one thousand true. But when the battle was
- 13:19Speaker 1: going down and songs were popping up and stuff like that,
- 13:25Speaker 1: Academics was on it. Like I watched him at one point,
- 13:29Speaker 1: I was like, he he is the fastest on this joint,
- 13:34Speaker 1: Like whether he's getting things directly from Drake or or
- 13:39Speaker 1: even directly from Kendrick like it seemed like he was
- 13:43Speaker 1: the one. He was at the what do you call
- 13:47Speaker 1: like the apex. I don't know, he was at the
- 13:50Speaker 1: center of this battle as a hip hop media guy.
- 13:57Speaker 2: He just was.
- 13:59Speaker 1: We don't have to like them, but I could see
- 14:04Speaker 1: him being ahead of Lad. And what's crazy is excuse me.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Vlad's probably working a little harder than him because he's
- 14:14Speaker 1: you know, he's getting guessed.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Got to pay some of.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Them or all of them, you know, like he's doing.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Glad is doing more with his content. But DJ academics
- 14:28Speaker 1: like in his basement drinking with a chat open and
- 14:32Speaker 1: a phone and it's like, oh, such and such about
- 14:36Speaker 1: to send me. He gets it, he plays it, he
- 14:39Speaker 1: reacts to it like I am jealous. The easiest job
- 14:45Speaker 1: you get, you know what I'm saying, especially when you
- 14:47Speaker 1: have enough of a following to have rappers during the battle,
- 14:53Speaker 1: like Yo, I'm about to send you this stay alive
- 14:58Speaker 1: even though they're using you. I can't argue with the
- 15:02Speaker 1: number one. Now, I can't argue with the number one
- 15:05Speaker 1: based off of complexes context around this list. But if
- 15:11Speaker 1: you want to know my opinion in general, none of
- 15:15Speaker 1: these and words should be number one because in a
- 15:21Speaker 1: lot of ways, let's just go through real quick.
- 15:27Speaker 2: None of it.
- 15:28Speaker 1: None of the people Joe Budden right, maybe to a
- 15:32Speaker 1: certain extent. Definitely not Vlat, definitely not DJ Academics, Fat Joe,
- 15:37Speaker 1: and Jadakiss to a certain extent. But I feel like
- 15:41Speaker 1: they're rookies in this when I watch them as host.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Charlomagne Leaguard might be the only one who's looking at
- 15:50Speaker 1: culture as he creates and says things and blah blah blah.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Everything else is kind of hype. You know what I'm saying.
- 15:58Speaker 1: What can I say? How can I bads out? What
- 16:00Speaker 1: can I critique? What can I debate? And I know
- 16:04Speaker 1: there's an appetite for that stuff, so I can't hate
- 16:07Speaker 1: on it at all. There's definitely a huge appetite for
- 16:13Speaker 1: debates and lists and arguments and crashing out on podcasts
- 16:19Speaker 1: and stuff like that. And you got to feed the people, right,
- 16:24Speaker 1: Who cares if a bunch of people, nah man, I
- 16:27Speaker 1: want to know when Coumo d gonna get back into booth.
- 16:32Speaker 1: That's the hip hop I'm pulling up for it. Nobody
- 16:34Speaker 1: making that dog You make it, you know, why because
- 16:40Speaker 1: if it's not just general information like what I do
- 16:44Speaker 1: right with's some hip hop perspective, is what I do?
- 16:49Speaker 1: Then you crashing out or making a list or something
- 16:54Speaker 1: that everybody's doing. And that's kind of what this list
- 16:58Speaker 1: is about. That's why academics would be number one. Because
- 17:01Speaker 1: he again, I gotta tip my cap. This dude is
- 17:06Speaker 1: just up in the room like me, live every day,
- 17:10Speaker 1: just coming downstairs. Look like he got the same shirt
- 17:12Speaker 1: on every day. And so what because he cake it
- 17:17Speaker 1: off and he has a huge influence. And I know
- 17:21Speaker 1: when this Drake album dropped, even I'm gonna go over
- 17:25Speaker 1: here to see, like, let's see how much he lays
- 17:29Speaker 1: because that's what he did. Okay, next same. So recently
- 17:40Speaker 1: it was announced that A Z would be dropping a
- 17:46Speaker 1: third installment in the now Do a Dye series. A
- 17:54Speaker 1: few years ago, Do a Dye was thirty years old.
- 17:58Speaker 1: I think it's ninety five, made thirty years and I
- 18:02Speaker 1: believe to commemorate that, or at least before that, he
- 18:07Speaker 1: dropped maybe it was two years ago.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Before that, he dropped dou Dye Too.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Now, my review on Doodye Too was it wasn't that good, right,
- 18:18Speaker 1: But I and again as generalizing, it wasn't that good
- 18:23Speaker 1: because it was bloated to me, like the first four songs,
- 18:28Speaker 1: I was like, oh, this ain't it. But then the
- 18:30Speaker 1: fifth song I was like oh. And the sixth song,
- 18:32Speaker 1: oh oh oh, And then there was a couple of
- 18:35Speaker 1: more this ain't it, and it was like twenty four tracks.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Then I think he put out a deluxe or maybe
- 18:41Speaker 1: that was the Deluxe, and it just felt like they
- 18:44Speaker 1: recorded a bunch of songs for the album and they
- 18:47Speaker 1: just put probably all of them on there.
- 18:52Speaker 2: So there was no rhyme or reason.
- 18:54Speaker 1: It didn't feel like it was connected to the original
- 18:57Speaker 1: in any way but the name and album cover, and
- 19:02Speaker 1: so for most people it was made as a result
- 19:05Speaker 1: because some people can't get past the fact that I
- 19:08Speaker 1: got to skip four songs before I get to the
- 19:10Speaker 1: good songs on the album. That has damned their twenty
- 19:13Speaker 1: four songs. So then it was announced a couple of
- 19:16Speaker 1: weeks ago that AZ was putting out an album on
- 19:20Speaker 1: Massive Pill Records, which you know NAS is affiliated with,
- 19:24Speaker 1: and I was optimistic because I was like, well, considering
- 19:27Speaker 1: what they just did with these seven legends, where really
- 19:32Speaker 1: I only disliked one project and that wasn't even that bad.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I was like, this is probably a really good look
- 19:41Speaker 1: for AZ, But why do Word Died Part three? You
- 19:46Speaker 1: know when part two wasn't well received like that at
- 19:51Speaker 1: least overall definitely not about me. So Door Died three
- 19:57Speaker 1: is here now. It's out on Mass Appeal. It is
- 20:01Speaker 1: not twenty four tracks, it's only thirteen like the original.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Do U Die like a shorter album? That's what I
- 20:09Speaker 1: mean time wise? It is only thirty four minutes now.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I could just spoiler alert. Didn't feel like that felt
- 20:18Speaker 1: like an hour, and I don't know if that's a
- 20:20Speaker 1: good thing or bad thing. Guest features include Nas, Mike
- 20:25Speaker 1: and Keys, Mike and Keys on a couples Joints, Mumu Fresh,
- 20:29Speaker 1: Jada Kisses on this album but it's mostly asy now,
- 20:35Speaker 1: y'all know how I do when I review albums. It's
- 20:37Speaker 1: three listens, right, First listen is just to get my
- 20:41Speaker 1: initial impressions. Second listen, Now, I'm gonna listen a little
- 20:45Speaker 1: bit more intently. I'm gonna, you know.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Like.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Lock in on the themes that are being presented. Like everything,
- 20:54Speaker 1: I'm really listening closely to what this album is, especially
- 20:59Speaker 1: for things I might have missed. Just running through it
- 21:02Speaker 1: on my first listen and my last listen is just
- 21:04Speaker 1: to confirm my thoughts. And for those who need quick reviews,
- 21:07Speaker 1: like Nigga, what's the score.
- 21:10Speaker 2: I think it's good. I think it's good.
- 21:13Speaker 1: I think it's definitely better than Doworded Too, probably easily
- 21:18Speaker 1: and Door Died Too to me, isn't whack. It's just
- 21:21Speaker 1: bloated this album, you know, I like the shorter albums,
- 21:26Speaker 1: being shorter with thirteen tracks. He rapping on the intro,
- 21:30Speaker 1: in the outro, and it's really only I think one
- 21:34Speaker 1: skit what I like the most about this album because
- 21:40Speaker 1: as he ain't never stop being able to rap right,
- 21:44Speaker 1: like he never lost that ability to rap the same way.
- 21:48Speaker 2: He may be a little older and may not be as.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Aggressive as Asy was when he was younger, but everybody
- 21:57Speaker 1: was like that, right, he's not that young anymore.
- 22:01Speaker 2: But it's also not slow and boring.
- 22:05Speaker 1: And what puts this Door Did three ahead of DOADT
- 22:09Speaker 1: two for me is I don't have the complaint any
- 22:15Speaker 1: longer that ass picking the wrong beats. This album is
- 22:21Speaker 1: like this is the pocket. This is why we liked as.
- 22:25Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying this is why he sound
- 22:27Speaker 1: dope on Life's a Bitch and while he sound dope
- 22:30Speaker 1: on sugar Hill and more money more probably I mean
- 22:33Speaker 1: more money, more murder, more homicide. Right, Uh, damn, what's
- 22:37Speaker 1: gonna happen? Because I said that whatever you two, but.
- 22:41Speaker 2: You know what I mean. Like it was one of
- 22:42Speaker 2: those things where I was listening, I.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Was like, finally, like an easy album again where I'm
- 22:51Speaker 1: not questioning the production choices.
- 22:54Speaker 2: They all fit. They all fit.
- 22:59Speaker 1: One thing I would say that maybe I don't like,
- 23:05Speaker 1: but it's not a bad thing, you know what I'm saying,
- 23:08Speaker 1: And it doesn't keep me from enjoying the album is
- 23:13Speaker 1: all of the callbacks to the original album.
- 23:16Speaker 2: And I mean not him just saying that it would
- 23:20Speaker 2: die in the year came out. I mean like we using.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Sound bites from that album, and I don't know how
- 23:29Speaker 1: I feel about that. And then also like a bunch
- 23:32Speaker 1: of sequels right give Me or give Me right with
- 23:40Speaker 1: nas now give Me the World with Jadakiss singing the
- 23:46Speaker 1: same hook. Basically, Uniqueness is essentially this album sugar Hill,
- 23:57Speaker 1: what's the other one? Still Jackie? Remember Hole happy Jackie?
- 24:04Speaker 1: Well he returned and the beat flip is that beat
- 24:08Speaker 1: being flipped. But with all of that being said, I
- 24:14Speaker 1: still like all of it. I still like all of it.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Like I think, I'm just more relieved that AS's rapping
- 24:21Speaker 1: over beats that fit his style and not just taking
- 24:24Speaker 1: beats and he's rhyming the same, but the beat is
- 24:29Speaker 1: just it's too much for his flow, Like this is
- 24:33Speaker 1: not what Asy sounds best over. And that's and that's
- 24:37Speaker 1: like somebody who's been listening to his albums throughout his career,
- 24:41Speaker 1: not just you know, after Pieces of a Man, I
- 24:45Speaker 1: was out, like I was listening to it over his career.
- 24:47Speaker 1: And sometimes he'll have a song and I'm like, yeah,
- 24:50Speaker 1: this is the Asy I know. And then they'll have
- 24:53Speaker 1: another song where I'm like, well, this beat is for Mop.
- 24:57Speaker 1: You shouldn't be rhyming over this because it's not matching
- 25:00Speaker 1: your smooth flow and your words really like that, So
- 25:04Speaker 1: and I get it right, Like A Z's a hip
- 25:07Speaker 1: hop head, he might have felt certain beats and like, yeah,
- 25:10Speaker 1: I want to spit over that, but his approach needs
- 25:15Speaker 1: his always used to say this, he needed something like
- 25:23Speaker 1: like with Rick Ross, right that vibe. Rick Ross is
- 25:28Speaker 1: perfect beat picker because it matches his lyrics to a
- 25:32Speaker 1: t if everything is lush and you know sounds rich
- 25:37Speaker 1: before he start talking about being rich. That's how a
- 25:40Speaker 1: Z should be at all times. It should be some cool,
- 25:43Speaker 1: cool beats right, the most aggressive beat songs.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Like more Money, more Murder.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Mohamicide right slow so he could really get the word playoff.
- 25:59Speaker 1: So that's what I mean, man, I think this album
- 26:02Speaker 1: is a good album. I think if the last album
- 26:06Speaker 1: you heard from Az was Do or Die one, you
- 26:10Speaker 1: might like this for nostalgia purposes. But I feel like
- 26:14Speaker 1: it at least this album is a better sequel to
- 26:20Speaker 1: his debut than Part two was. Part two felt kind
- 26:25Speaker 1: of like everything in the kitchen sink and I'm gonna
- 26:28Speaker 1: just throw Do or Die two on it, And it
- 26:32Speaker 1: just wasn't an album that you know, worked for me.
- 26:34Speaker 1: And ahead of this review, I went back and listened
- 26:39Speaker 1: to Door Die one and two just to make sure
- 26:43Speaker 1: you know, it was fresh in my memory. So again,
- 26:47Speaker 1: hearing this new album was like, yeah, I kind of
- 26:50Speaker 1: this feels like you're adding on you know.
- 26:53Speaker 2: It may it may.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Be too many callbacks for some, but I feel like
- 26:57Speaker 1: it's a cool album dropped out of time, and AZ
- 27:01Speaker 1: deserves its props, So there you have it. And lastly,
- 27:08Speaker 1: so I'm gonna be quick with this because I've been
- 27:10Speaker 1: trying to make these episodes shorter, and this is not
- 27:13Speaker 1: one of these shorter episodes. But as a hip hop
- 27:20Speaker 1: as a part of hip hop media, I feel like
- 27:26Speaker 1: the boomback resurgence that gave us obviously Griselda and kind
- 27:32Speaker 1: of boosted Rock Marciano even though he was out there anyway.
- 27:36Speaker 1: But the wave, right, the wave that gave us all
- 27:40Speaker 1: these cats mac Hamie, like everybody you can think of,
- 27:44Speaker 1: you know, I'm talking about thirty eight Spash, like that
- 27:48Speaker 1: whole wave of boom back, coming back or coming back
- 27:53Speaker 1: to popularity, not necessarily coming back and dominating hip hop
- 28:00Speaker 1: us it because it never really did that, but at
- 28:02Speaker 1: least coming back to a respectable audience, not just a
- 28:08Speaker 1: bunch of curmudgeons with Jan Sports from the nineties, who
- 28:13Speaker 1: are the only ones that know this Now it got
- 28:15Speaker 1: to a point where everybody know it, like everybody know
- 28:18Speaker 1: Westside Gun and the ad libs and all that. But
- 28:22Speaker 1: it felt like it peaked a couple of years ago, right,
- 28:27Speaker 1: maybe two maybe more maybe two maybe two is safe.
- 28:33Speaker 1: And the reason why I say that is is because
- 28:36Speaker 1: right now, at the pace at which shout out to
- 28:41Speaker 1: Ransom also, but at the pace at which these boombab
- 28:47Speaker 1: artists have released music over time, I think they oversaturated
- 28:53Speaker 1: that market. And not that it's dead, right, not that
- 28:57Speaker 1: they still not that they're not putting out dope music,
- 29:02Speaker 1: but I think the audience has settled. Right, you checked
- 29:07Speaker 1: for who you like, or you may feel eh, all
- 29:13Speaker 1: of this sounds the same. I listened to the new
- 29:14Speaker 1: stuff and I'm like, it's not better than what happened
- 29:17Speaker 1: two years ago, right, It's not better than Tenne Talk three,
- 29:21Speaker 1: So I'm gonna just keep running back Tenna Talk three.
- 29:26Speaker 2: And I think what's also.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Kind of staggering the boombap ness that we witnessed over
- 29:35Speaker 1: the last couple of years is the fact that the
- 29:38Speaker 1: Clips dropped and Stove God got a real good look
- 29:44Speaker 1: on there, and I think he got a look that
- 29:46Speaker 1: was a crossover look, right, Like they are fans that
- 29:51Speaker 1: didn't know Stove God until that Clips album.
- 29:54Speaker 2: And were like, yo, who's he?
- 29:56Speaker 1: And everybody was talking about you know, I remember Cam
- 30:01Speaker 1: talking about him, you know what I'm saying, same thing
- 30:03Speaker 1: with Fat Joe, and it felt like Stove God is
- 30:07Speaker 1: about to just open the door wider for boom Bap
- 30:10Speaker 1: to just happen all over again. And in an ironic twist,
- 30:16Speaker 1: an underground label like Baby Grant is the one holding
- 30:19Speaker 1: it back. So I think in general, the saying boom
- 30:25Speaker 1: Bab's resurgence peaked two years ago. It's true, like when
- 30:33Speaker 1: Benny used to drop My Timeline was just everybody talking
- 30:38Speaker 1: about it. Now sometimes I feel like I'm the only
- 30:41Speaker 1: one listening it. Westside Gun may have the most buzz
- 30:48Speaker 1: around his releases because of how he doesn't and because
- 30:52Speaker 1: how he's more of a character. He's more of a
- 30:57Speaker 1: personality than his counterparts and Conway, everybody knows he's nice,
- 31:06Speaker 1: so when he releases something new, you just confirmed what
- 31:09Speaker 1: you already know. So it just feels like same thing
- 31:13Speaker 1: with Rock Marciano. I know Rock Marciano hardcore fans who
- 31:17Speaker 1: are like, yeah, this one.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Was all right. They tired, y'all, They're tired.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Stove Guy was the most interesting thing from that Boombap
- 31:29Speaker 1: situation that felt like it was going to like keep
- 31:33Speaker 1: it going, And as we got hyped and ready to
- 31:38Speaker 1: anticipate what we were going to hear, we just didn't
- 31:40Speaker 1: get it. So I don't think boom Bap has gone
- 31:44Speaker 1: back to excuse me, to where it was, where you know,
- 31:49Speaker 1: it didn't have like an industry eye on it. I
- 31:53Speaker 1: don't think that's happening. I just think that the guys
- 31:56Speaker 1: who do this on a regular basis, those are nicest
- 32:00Speaker 1: and we're a part of the wave. I just think like,
- 32:04Speaker 1: if you're a fan, you're probably checking for it or
- 32:09Speaker 1: their new release, but you're not as hyped as you
- 32:12Speaker 1: were a few years ago, mainly because we get so
- 32:16Speaker 1: much from them that and like, let's just say, within
- 32:20Speaker 1: the span of three years, it feels like we got
- 32:22Speaker 1: enough music for twenty years. So when you come to
- 32:27Speaker 1: twenty twenty six and you're like, y'all, I got three
- 32:28Speaker 1: projects dropping, it's like, no, you don't, man, I got
- 32:32Speaker 1: twenty five of your albums and I just started listening
- 32:38Speaker 1: to you two years ago. How you got more than nas?
- 32:43Speaker 1: Nobody wants to hear it, and it could be it
- 32:45Speaker 1: could be fired. So I don't know, what do you think?
- 32:47Speaker 1: Do you think the whole Boombab resurgence is still thriving
- 32:51Speaker 1: and going or do you feel like it's or you
- 32:54Speaker 1: feel like me, like you check for who you like
- 32:59Speaker 1: and that's pretty much it. The hype, the wave, the
- 33:02Speaker 1: looking to see what everybody else thinks about the album.
- 33:04Speaker 1: That's kind of overweight. Also, you know, what do you
- 33:08Speaker 1: think about hip hop mediating? You know what shows do
- 33:10Speaker 1: you watch to? Do you watch them for those reasons
- 33:13Speaker 1: to get the scoop on you know, hip hop or
- 33:16Speaker 1: just stay in to know leave your comments in a
