- 1:12was the end of the Amazing Mister Malone over American radio. In addition,
- 1:19there was a television series, but it didn't last long. However, Mister
- 1:23Malone would continue to appear on the radio, just not in the United States.
- 1:29Grace Gibson Radio Productions was one of Australia's biggest radio syndicators. They did
- 1:36quite a few original series, but they also would purchase scripts from American radio
- 1:42programs to be produced in Australian with Australian cast members and the series first appeared
- 1:49in syndication in nineteen fifty three and would continue from August twenty seventh to fifty
- 1:56three to August nineteenth of nineteen fifty It employed scraps from the ABC run of
- 2:04the series, which is good since all but four of those are missing or
- 2:08only half half the episode available. One notable change they did is that they
- 2:15moved the series from Chicago to New York. Not quite certain why they did
- 2:21it. They may have just had more Australian actors who were familiar with doing
- 2:25New York accents. Well, have more to say about the syndication, but
- 2:30this will be actually the first time we go ahead and play a full Australian
- 2:37episode. And we've got four of these episodes, so we'll take a listen
- 2:39to the first. This was the eleventh episode of the run aired in Australia
- 2:46originally November the fifth, nineteen fifty three, and the title is The Smoothie
- 2:53The Amazing Miss Them Alone Operator Give Me the Office of John J. Malone.
- 3:09We now present The Amazing Mister Malone, an exciting half hour of mystery
- 3:15and suspense starring John Saul as the lawyer who practiced before every type of bar
- 3:21has become a legend. Allo Carl is the city of New York, the
- 3:30time, the present, and the hero of these weekly adventures. The amazing
- 3:36mister Malone. Malone's the name, John J. Malone, Attorney and Counselorate
- 3:59Law. My collection of tried and true cliches is the oldie nothing venture,
- 4:03nothing gained. Peter Quinn had heard that one all his life, but being
- 4:08a timid little fellow, he took a long time to act on it.
- 4:10But when he did, he ventured in a big way. Only he didn't
- 4:14gain. He lost everything. But it was not the axiom that was at
- 4:18fault. It was the person with whom Quinn ventured, said person being Peter
- 4:23Dumont, a suave, shrewd operator who at the moment is leaning back in
- 4:28one of the overstuffed chairs of his lavishly furnished apartment and smiling pityingly at Quinn,
- 4:33who faces before him, squeaking his indignation. You are a thief,
- 4:38woman, that's what you are, Just an ordinary thief, a thief,
- 4:42perhaps ordinary neess, and you need try to be cute. You saw me
- 4:46fifteen thousand dollars worth of worthless stock. What are you going to do about
- 4:49nothing? I want my money. It's in much better hands now Quinn believes
- 4:54me to see that renworth youtu Now you would never have shown such tastes.
- 5:00Don't change the subject, not you swiddle me. Don't try it tonight.
- 5:03You led me to believe that all well would bring a big return. People
- 5:06so easily led deserves to be. It was our right fevery. You're repeating
- 5:12yourself. I want to know what you're going to do about the money.
- 5:15Now you're forcing me to repeat myself. The answer is still nothing. Then
- 5:19I'll I'll see you in court with no proof. There was nothing on paper.
- 5:26Well, if I can't get what's coming to me, at least I
- 5:30can exposure so you can't cheat anyone else. Huggins, Huggins, what me,
- 5:38mister Dumont, show mister Quinn out right, and when you get him
- 5:43outside, Huggins, convince him that it would be wiser not to cause us
- 5:46any inconvenience. Right, I get the idea good? Now see the Quinn
- 5:53does? Would you do, monsieur dam could you leave you right this way?
- 6:04See other gentlemen is already seated at your table as a gentleman. Gentlemen,
- 6:11gentlemen, I thought he was in your party. Nobody's in our party.

- 8:30Peter? Mike jon't say Peter Dumont? Go on, well, mister Stoner,
- 8:35he's been bothering Peter. I think he's against you. Does Peter say
- 8:37Stone is against her? He won't say anything about him, but I can
- 8:41see he's won. Well, well do you want me to though? Isn't
- 8:45there somewhere you can make mister Stoner leave Peter alone, stop bothering him.
- 8:50A court order or something depends on how he's bothering him. Is he threatened
- 8:52Peter? I don't know, great, but he up said Peter. How
- 8:58I don't know? He just does This would sound dandy in court. I'm
- 9:03afraid I can't help you, Miss Grandma. By the way, does Peter
- 9:07know you've come to me? Of course no. I beg him to do
- 9:11something about it, but he won't. He has a bodyguard, he says,
- 9:15that's all he needs. A bodyguard. Yeah, a man named hugging
- 9:20or horrible person. Peter sounds charming, he is, no doubt. Well,
- 9:24look, if he wants protection, he'll asks for it. The best
- 9:26thing for you to do is mind your own business. Peter is my business.
- 9:31We're going to be married. I meant that you would only have a
- 9:33talk with mister Stonner, find out what you really want. Look, Miss
- 9:37Grandba, call me at Alissa. Unless I'm very much mistaken. Peter's not
- 9:41going to like your budding in. Don't worry if you'll just do what I
- 9:46ask. I can handle, Peter, Yeah, I'll bet you can at
- 9:50that. Yeah, I'll be stoner. Yeah, I'm John Jay Malone.
- 10:05Should I be amazed? Give me time? May I come in? What
- 10:09forward? I'd like to talk to you while I buy? What does your
- 10:11mom? Who sends you? Does it matter? Maybe? Well let's talk
- 10:16it over and find out. Shall we? All right? Come in?
- 10:20Thanks? You working for Dumont? No? Oh, I told you Stoner.

- 10:48on? Is? I don't know? But he's duped. He's down there,
- 10:50and just get it all right? You better stop struggling mistead cover Okay,
- 10:56wow, mister Hagan, So this is Huggins, Hey, Dumont's boy.
- 11:01Yeah, he tried to shoot you, stoner. I heard a noise
- 11:05at the window. I looked. I saw him right outside raising the gun.
- 11:07So I tossed the lamp at him just in time too. It caught
- 11:11him and the shot went wild, and then I grabbed him before he recovered
- 11:13planted. Malone splanted and now will you put your hands up? Want me?
- 11:20Yeah? Go on, get him up. Oh that's gratitude. How
- 11:22handle is my way? I can get to see you wait them alone if
- 11:28I need to. Right now, I've got some pressing business with Huggins.
- 11:33Oh you better get going, Malone. But don't you want to? I
- 11:35told you what I want to settle with Huggins. All right, Malone,
- 11:41start walking. When a man plows a gun on you and says start walking,
- 11:50you walk, so do I. I walked away from Huggins and Stoner
- 11:54And that was the end of a very unsatisfactory conversation. I didn't think my
- 11:58client would be please. Well, she'd know where to find me if she
- 12:03wanted me. I was all set to make a shot that would really amazed
- 12:07Jolly. I studied the position, chucked the Q got sip. He started
- 12:15my stroke and hello, hey you, mister Malone. No, mister Malone,
- 12:22I must talk to you. Yes, it may be a master.
- 12:26Don't tell me life or death. How did you know I'm amazing. Who's
- 12:31this time? Who's what? Life or death? Mine? Huh, Well
- 12:35that's a swift anyway. And just who are you less to? Quinn?
- 12:37Quinn? All right, and I what's this danger you're in? Mister Dumon
- 12:43thinks I hired you to investigate him? I wanted to tell him. I
- 12:46didn't why because he's angry. There's no telling what he may do to me.
- 12:52I mean, what gives him the idea I'm working for you are actually
- 12:56working for somebody. I threatened to get a lawyer to tell her. Yeah,
- 13:01it made me change my mind, so naturally he wanted to sue him.
- 13:05Why. I'd rather not say what's the matter? Dumont wouldn't like it.
- 13:11He wouldn't have to know you told me he might find out. Well,
- 13:16if you won't tell me anything about Dumont, can you tell me anything
- 13:18about Stoner? I don't know anything about it. All right, thanks for
- 13:22nothing, Quinn, And now may I get back to my game? Well
- 13:26certainly, but you will tell Dumant I didn't engage you, won't you know
- 13:31what? But why not? It's my bargaining point. I'll make a deal.
- 13:35What kind of a deal. Tell me what I want to know about
- 13:37Dumont, and I'll tell him I'm not working for you, all right,
- 13:43Malon, you win? Good? Now, what's with Dumont? He's a
- 13:48swind last he told me fifteen thousand dollars worth of phony oil stock, so
- 13:54that's it. Yeah. When I fret to take him to courty, have
- 14:00his tug slapped me around and won me not to say anything. All right,
- 14:05thanks Gwinn. Now you will tell Doo much You're not working for me,
- 14:09all right, But of course you mustn't tell you I talk to you
- 14:11about it. It may not be easy to work both ends and left together,
- 14:16but I'll try. Thank you. Save it, Quen, save it
- 14:20till we see how I make out. Oh, Pierre, there's the other
- 14:31gentleman here again we misued you more. Well, that's all right this time
- 14:35I'm expected today right to be here. Thank you. How's a boy,
- 14:43Sam, I'm gonna tell you I wanted to have lunch with you. Yes,
- 14:48How is he feeling better? That's good? I guess I was a
- 14:52little rob on him. Did you know something to man? I take it
- 14:56personal when somebody tries to throw a slug at me. Of course he was
- 15:01acting under orders, conversational dexterity never was your strong suit. Stone. Well,
- 15:05that's dispensefulin you end nose and come right down to the point. But
- 15:09why did you ask me to have lunch with you today? What do you
- 15:11want with me? Buck Pallely? I followed you all the way from La
- 15:15on a kind of I like it as a team. I can handle the
- 15:18rough stuff. You're good with the smooth line. When we've got some rich
- 15:22baby we want to knock over. We're a natural. That doesn't answer my
- 15:26question, Sure it does. This is one partnership I don't like to see
- 15:30dissolved. You were not on me. I kind of bring you home.
- 15:35Ooh, you're determined to take me back. That's right, pal, you
- 15:41can't shake me. You might as well stop trying. Well, at least
- 15:46your persistence is flattering. Yeah, oh, how about it. I got
- 15:50reservations for two on the century, but tomorrow we use them for two.
- 15:56Yeah, Huggins desire, I'm taking no chances. I know you wouldn't have
- 16:02the nerve to pull a trigger yourself. I wasn't thinking of Huggins h a
- 16:07doll? Is that serious? Could have been? If I could have shaken
- 16:11Huggins in time, and if you hadn't shown up and I just wanted to
- 16:15do a few more jobs to get a little hit. Don't make me a
- 16:19laugh, but your taste it could never attire. The could always be some
- 16:26painting or a lousy antique. Well you know me, So check the babe
- 16:30and let's blow. I'll think about it. Well, thank god, because
- 16:36I'm getting tired of horse and rum. Either a comeback but popper or they

- 17:30think one of them is a shakedown on it. Don't you sorry to disappoint

- 18:00tell you in good time. You know, if you was trying to hold
- 18:04something back and I wanted to, I could make you talk. I could
- 18:10trust you in half. So easy to struggle with brute force, Huggins is
- 18:12that when it is not tempered by intelligence, it accomplishes very little. As
- 18:17witness last night. How I know Malone was going to be there. The
- 18:18point is he was there and you were unable to cope with the situation his
- 18:22presence created. You're not very bright, Huggins. I wouldn't advise you to
- 18:26cross me. Look if you want it now, there's the doorbell. Answer
- 18:30it. Okay, it's probably missus Granville. Here her into the study.
- 18:33I'll do with her in a minute. My dear, thank you ill.

- 19:03arrange a passage, we'll sail for honeymoon stock Oh, Peter, that sounds
- 19:07wonderful. Only why the great rush? Why not? Is it because of
- 19:12that person? What person, mister Sterney? What gave you that idea?
- 19:18The way you acted and the way he did? Am sure, my dear,
- 19:21I don't range matters ru like a wedding to suit Stoney. Well,
- 19:25you don't have to worry about him anyway. I'm delighted to hear it.
- 19:27And just what gave you the idea? I am worried about him? I
- 19:30can tell. Have I underestimated you? My dear? Is there a brain
- 19:34behind that? Lovely to say? Now, don't get angry. I never
- 19:37do. It's just that I love you so much. That's why I noticed,
- 19:41and that I that you what? Well? Nothing? That you what

- 19:56You talk to him? No, not I but yes, nothing, You're
- 20:02young. I'm not angry. I'm sorry, Peter. Wait a moment,
- 20:06Malone, he was at Stoner's. I thought that Quinn. Oh, so
- 20:11that's it. You hired Malone. I was worried about you. I thought
- 20:15that, he thought. I'm sorry, it's a little late for that.
- 20:18And listen, what are you going to do by leaving New York? As
- 20:21I plan? Good alone the depths of your stupidity and time. Put your
- 20:26hands off me. Don't be angry. I'm telling me I'm angry. Ask
- 20:33me what you made me do? I never struck a woman before in my
- 20:36life. Now get out of here. Oh my pet, I'm going,
- 20:56Hello Eliza, let them alone? Come in? Thanks? M hm.
- 21:03Yes, maybe I'm a little late late before for telling you what I found
- 21:07out. From the look of your eyes, you've found out yourself, and
- 21:11I found out Peter doesn't love me? Going away? Going away? When
- 21:18tonight? Well I have to see him first, I promise. Somebody,
- 21:19May I use your phone? What's the number on the pad? Oh?
- 21:26Yes, thanks? How come you found out about him? I told him

- 22:29thanks, Huggan. First door down that way. Thanks again. Yeah,
- 22:51he doesn't answer and the door's locked. All right, what's the idea?
- 22:56Wait a minute, I get someone in there. Yeah, come on,
- 23:00come on, open up, open in the window. You have a
- 23:06keep of this door. Oh well, maybe we can break it in.
- 23:08Come on, okay, no, good, come on once more. Okay,
- 23:15here we are. Yeah, there's Dumont where on the floor by the
- 23:21desk. No wonder he didn't enter the door. I'll cut he put a
- 23:25bullet in his head. Yeah, duman was dead. The window was open,
- 23:33and whoever had been there was gone. I gave the room a quick

- 24:33that's all. I didn't say anybody had been killed. I don't read that
- 24:41taken before anyone gets hurted. That's better. And now, Stoner, I
- 24:47think you're going to two months after all? Come on, I alatand I
- 24:56brought you a present, Lieutenant Sleet Harvey Stoner charm well, lieutenant, I

- 25:22Just before? Ruh, we got that call at three forty five.
- 25:26You're doing great, Malone. Why what's the matter? The mia says Demart
- 25:29was killed sometime around three. Well, Malone, I guess that lets me
- 25:33out. I'm not so fast, Stoner. You could have forgotten something and
- 25:36come back for it, prove it. Maybe he won't have to. You
- 25:38know, we got other leads. What Brooks? The girl for one thing?
- 25:41Malone, she was here around three, But I didn't do it.

- 25:56told me Demanda just come in, so he must have been alive there.
- 26:00And that was nearly three forty five. I was in the back of the
- 26:03apartment. I heard somebody come in. Actually I figured it was Dumont.
- 26:07I guess the stone Man satisfied Malone. All right, so Dumont was dead
- 26:14since three? Hey, now what there's one level man. We've all been
- 26:19overlooking Osa. Just a hunch, but it's worth checking. Where's the phone?

- 26:26through in there. All right, No, no, wait a minute,
- 26:30we'll make up your mind. Malone. Seems I'm wrong again. You know

- 26:41there. What do you meet, Malone? Just what I said? How
- 26:45can Hugh kill Dumont? And this time I'm not wrong? Well, Huggins
- 27:00talked and what he had on what Bruh admitted the whole thing. You were
- 27:03right, You're amazing, mister Malone. Well, I won't argue the point.
- 27:10Lieutenant Dumart was going to tie the can to Huggins, and Huggins got
- 27:12beats, so he plugged him. But Jumble Malone. Huggins pretended not to
- 27:18know anything about the murder until we broke into the study and found the body.
- 27:22Yeah, that's right, but I'd called Huggins about fifteen minutes before that.
- 27:26Until he might be over. So the call must have taken place somewhere
- 27:30around three thirty, when Dumont was already dead. Right. Well, when
- 27:34you told me the only phone in the apartment was in the study, I
- 27:38saw that Huggins was our boy, because when he answered my call, he
- 27:42must have seen the body, but he didn't say anything. M Well,
- 27:47huh, the body was in the study and the phone was in the study.
- 27:52Yeah, all right. If that doesn't Malon, I thought it would.
- 27:56There's only one thing I still don't understand. What's that you get mixed
- 28:00up in this case? In my first place, Alyssa asked me to and
- 28:03you saw what a beauty she was. But she was engaged to another man
- 28:07at the time. Yeah, so she was, but I could see she
- 28:12was the sort of woman men die for. I just took a chance he
- 28:17would. Good night, let him and now once again back to the Amazing
- 28:42mister Malone. I'll have another story for you next week, so why not
- 28:47pick me up in my office at the same time. I'll be waiting for
- 28:49you, and good night. The Amazing Mister Malone is a Grace Gibson production
- 29:02starring John Saul as John J. Malone. And directed by Lawrence a Cecil.
- 29:18Welcome back, well, very comparable to the American production. The one
- 29:22thing I didn't hear in the episode, and perhaps the biggest difference with the
- 29:26NBC run, was the chemistry between the actor John Sall and Hart maguire in
- 29:37the roles of Malone and Brooks versus the previous run that we just heard.
- 29:45But to be fair, Brooks wasn't in this episode a whole on, so
- 29:49we'll have to see how that develops. It's interesting to note we had a
- 29:55listener send in a question a while back asking if anyone went to Australia on
- 30:02Carter Brown to play to play roles on Australian radio, and I said,
- 30:10nothing I aware of. But according to the Digital la FTP which I've got
- 30:15the information on the Australian run for Hart McGuire, who was actually born in
- 30:21Tennessee, did play the role of Lieutenant Brooks in this series. All right,
- 30:27well, that will do it for today. Join us back here tomorrow
- 30:30as we continue on with Matter of Reasonable Doubt. In four weeks we'll be
- 30:37bringing you mister Chameleon. But in the meantime, join us next Tuesday for
- 30:44another episode of the amazing mister Malone from Boise, Idaho. This is your
- 30:48host, Adam Graham, Sign and off.
