- 0:01Understanding the operation of the three gunas or qualities of
- 0:05nature, is an important part of understanding yogic psychology.
- 0:10The Bhagwad Gita devotes considerable effort to
- 0:13describing the gunas and their functionality.
- 0:17For most people, however, translating things like
- 0:20reactions, responses, attitudes, etcetera into the language of
- 0:25the gunas is a difficult task. This is particularly the case
- 0:30for Westerners who have no background or grounding in the
- 0:33yogic psychology and its terminology.
- 0:37Dr. Dalal has found a way to describe the action of the gunas
- 0:42as a type of attitude of response.
- 0:45He is essentially assigning the predominant quality of each guna
- 0:49to a specific aspect of the being.
- 0:52Thus the physical being is characterized primarily by
- 0:56Thomas, the vital being by rajas, and the mental being by
- 1:01Sattva in their purest and ideal forms.
- 1:05Of course, there is an intermixture at each level, so
- 1:09no one represents any guna solely, nor is any element of
- 1:14the complete Being free from the action and qualifying attitude
- 1:18of the other gunas. Dr. Dalal observes quote the
- 1:24differences among the parts of the outer being are illustrated
- 1:28in relation to attitude towards life, oneself and others, work
- 1:35and difficulties with respect to attitudes of the outer being
- 1:40towards life. The physical being exhibits
- 1:43aimlessness with life governed by habit and routine.
- 1:47The vital being fixates on pursuit of wealth, sex and
- 1:52power. Life governed by desire.
- 1:56The mental beings attitude is governed by pursuit of
- 1:58knowledge. Life governed by moral and
- 2:01mental principles with respect to oneself and others.
- 2:06The physical being focuses on identification with the body.
- 2:11The vital being identifies with impulses and emotions.
- 2:15The mental being focuses on identification with the mind.
- 2:20With respect to work, the physical being sees it as a
- 2:24chore, drudgery. The vital being looks upon work
- 2:28as a means of earning, exercising power and exhibiting
- 2:32one's skills and abilities. The mental being is concerned
- 2:37with performance of duty, rendering a service, means of
- 2:41self-expression and self improvement.
- 2:44Regarding difficulties, the physical being tends to respond
- 2:48with indifference, passive resignation, avoidance, or
- 2:52escapism. The vital being responds with
- 2:56struggle, anxiety and tension, irritability, and aggression.
- 3:02The mental being acts by focusing on dispassionate
- 3:05problem solving. Since all human beings have
- 3:09physical, vital, and mental components in the makeup of
- 3:13their personality, the attitudes pertaining to these parts of the
- 3:18being exist in everybody. The attitudes vary in different
- 3:22persons in the degree of their predominance, depending on the
- 3:26extent to which each of the three parts of the being is
- 3:30dominant in a person. End Quote Reference Sri
