- 0:00Speaker 1: It's a it's called a hummingbird cake.
- 0:04Speaker 2: How many hummingbirds are in it?
- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm not sure why they call it that. I think
- 0:07Speaker 1: it's because it's so sweet it we will hover around it.
- 0:11Speaker 1: So my my sister in law, Julie, who works at
- 0:15Speaker 1: the Humane Society, made that cake and brought out brought
- 0:19Speaker 1: over a big hunk of it for us. Let me
- 0:21Speaker 1: tell you what's in it. So this cake became popular
- 0:24Speaker 1: when they're A recipe for it was published in the
- 0:28Speaker 1: magazine's Southern Living back in the seventies. Apparently that's when
- 0:32Speaker 1: people sort of started making it. So it's it has
- 0:37Speaker 1: ripe mashed bananas, they have to be over ripe. It
- 0:42Speaker 1: has canned crushed pineapple with you got to keep the
- 0:46Speaker 1: juice too, toasted pecans or walnuts, and then a then cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and a thick cream cheese frosting. And it is the
- 1:00Speaker 1: most delicious cake I have ever eaten in my life. Idiots,
- 1:06Speaker 1: was so good. I couldn't I just couldn't believe it.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Now, that's a stock photo. That's not the.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Actual No, that's not the actual one, because that's that
- 1:13Speaker 1: looks like but it looked but but I'm telling you.
- 1:17Speaker 1: She the cake she brought over looked exactly like that.
- 1:20Speaker 4: That was it anybody's birthday or anything? Now, do you
- 1:23Speaker 4: just get cake? Because she likes that we should do cake?
- 1:27Speaker 1: Because yes, she she she she likes to bake, and
- 1:31Speaker 1: she's a very really good baker, and and she bakes
- 1:33Speaker 1: cakes and she's she's also really good at Humane Society,
- 1:37Speaker 1: Gene and I do everything because just because yeah, it
- 1:43Speaker 1: just huh man, it was I really even, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 1: like that wonderful burnt almond cake that we have have
- 1:54Speaker 1: had shipped in frantiles better than that. It was yep.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Absolutely, Well see, now you're throwing down a gauntlet telling
- 2:03Speaker 2: you why didn't you bring some in?
- 2:06Speaker 1: Because it's got it, It got it, it got it.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Her make another one?
- 2:12Speaker 1: Well, I said, I said this, I'm guessing this is
- 2:15Speaker 1: pretty hard to make, and she said yeah, it's really.
- 2:18Speaker 1: It's very time intensive and it is hard. But I
- 2:22Speaker 1: had good news from the Humane Society, so I think
- 2:28Speaker 1: it was the last time they were here they had rabbit, right, yes, yes,
- 2:32Speaker 1: And so when they when the Humane socigny, not when
- 2:36Speaker 1: they're coming back sometime once a month, I think, yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 1: sometime next week or something. But so they've they've brought
- 2:42Speaker 1: in kiddies, they brought in puppies, hamsters, hamsters, guinea pigs,
- 2:46Speaker 1: guinea pigs, and then they brought in a rabbit. And
- 2:50Speaker 1: rabbits are really hard to get adopted. Yeah. Uh, and
- 2:56Speaker 1: so every other time they've come here, uh, the animal
- 2:59Speaker 1: that has been adopted almost immediately they go back and
- 3:03Speaker 1: somebody calls me and says, I want that, yeah, but
- 3:06Speaker 1: the rabbit not so much. The rabbit no, And I've
- 3:09Speaker 1: made me feel bad. But then that was a while ago.
- 3:12Speaker 1: But then I talked to Julia last night when she
- 3:14Speaker 1: brought the cake over, and she said, oh, oh, by
- 3:16Speaker 1: the way, the rabbit thing, actually it was we had
- 3:21Speaker 1: ended up adopting out twenty rabbits. Oh and probably just
- 3:25Speaker 1: based on that that so the one that they brought
- 3:28Speaker 1: it didn't get adopted right away, but then all of
- 3:30Speaker 1: a sudden, boom boom, boom boom run. A few days later,
- 3:34Speaker 1: rabbits started getting adopt and we adopted out twenty, which
- 3:38Speaker 1: is a lot twenty rabbits. So way to go, interesting,
- 3:42Speaker 1: way to go. Listeners of the Radio from Hell show,
- 3:44Speaker 1: they're nice people.
- 3:46Speaker 2: The human Society'll be here on Thursday. Oh, parting to katies,
- 3:50Speaker 2: all right, and I don't know what they're bringing.
- 3:52Speaker 1: They're not bringing a hummingbird cake. I'm sure no. Oh man,
- 3:56Speaker 1: I was good. I could I just I was just
- 3:59Speaker 1: not doubt by how good it was. And it was
- 4:03Speaker 1: invented in Uh when did I read New Zealand where
- 4:08Speaker 1: they don't call hummingbirds hummingbirds, they call them doctor birds,
- 4:12Speaker 1: doctor birds.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Well then is it a doctor bird cake?
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yeah? There, but here it's a hummingbird cake. That just
- 4:18Speaker 1: don't make no sense because we have because we have
- 4:21Speaker 1: hummingbirds here, they have doctor birds. I'm confusing bird.
- 4:24Speaker 3: But what does it have to do with the cake?
- 4:26Speaker 1: Well, I think it's because it's just so, it's so sweet,
- 4:29Speaker 1: it's you know, it'll it will draw them.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Hummingbird cake is called that because it's so sweet and tropical.
- 4:39Speaker 3: And I said, to attract hummingbirds.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Attract hummingbirds.
- 4:44Speaker 2: When do the hummingbirds come back?
- 4:46Speaker 3: Well, they should be here by now, right, because the
- 4:49Speaker 3: spring is.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Spring usually I see the first one I put on.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I used to have a contest with Uncle Todd. We
- 4:56Speaker 1: would put up our hummingbird feeders and see who could
- 4:58Speaker 1: get the first hummingbird, and usually it's uh, you know,
- 5:04Speaker 1: it might be earlier this year because it's so warm.
- 5:06Speaker 1: It could be mid April, but are usually early May.
- 5:10Speaker 1: They show up, and you know people who say I
- 5:15Speaker 1: was talking to my my therapist and she said, uh, oh,
- 5:20Speaker 1: I just I thought. I started feeling really good about
- 5:24Speaker 1: the weather. I saw my first robin, big fat robin
- 5:28Speaker 1: in it, so it's going to be spring. And I said, well,
- 5:30Speaker 1: you know it's robins don't really they don't actually migrate.
- 5:35Speaker 3: They erect your therapist built.
- 5:38Speaker 1: They mostly hang out, hang out around. Sometimes they'll go
- 5:41Speaker 1: a little ways away if there's more food, but you know,
- 5:44Speaker 1: but generally they don't do long distance migrations. They just
- 5:47Speaker 1: sort of hang out. You just don't see them as
- 5:50Speaker 1: much because it's cold.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Someone says, I saw a hummingbird this weekend.
- 5:55Speaker 2: No, maybe, well, but where are they when you're texting?
- 6:00Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe you're in you're in Florida.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you list some context. Well, I'll put up my
- 6:07Speaker 1: feeder and see what happens.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Are we gonna get anymore snow or just fine? I
- 6:13Speaker 2: don't think so, you don't think so at all? Probably not. Well,
- 6:16Speaker 2: now I've got a whole bunch of gas for my snowblower.
- 6:20Speaker 1: What do I do with that?
- 6:22Speaker 3: Oh?
- 6:22Speaker 2: Like you have a because because both of our cars.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Are electric, so you could sell it. It's probably gonna
- 6:28Speaker 1: be worth a lot of money.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Yeah, carry that much in Bartertown. You're gonna be a popular.
- 6:33Speaker 1: You're gonna have to.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't keep it like till next year. It'll
- 6:37Speaker 3: go bad.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Well yeah, yeah I can't. Yeah, it sort of does
- 6:40Speaker 1: go bad if you Yeah, I think you should. I
- 6:44Speaker 1: think you should get a little red wagon and go
- 6:47Speaker 1: from door to door gas for sale, gas for sale.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I don't know what to do with it.
- 6:55Speaker 3: You have a gas powered snow blowing snowblower.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's the big, it's huge, it's a tank,
- 7:02Speaker 2: it's it's got treads.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'm not kidding.
- 7:04Speaker 3: You live up on Mount Dunes, Yeah, back.
- 7:06Speaker 1: When it used to snow. Now I could go. I've
- 7:10Speaker 1: told the story before.
- 7:11Speaker 2: And when we moved up there, we realized we're going
- 7:15Speaker 2: to have to get a snowblower.
- 7:16Speaker 1: So we went to went to Pennies.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Pennies you know where the lake where the lake is now?
- 7:24Speaker 2: And uh, the guy said thank you, and he says,
- 7:28Speaker 2: you know, here's the snowblowers. And I said, okay, we'll
- 7:30Speaker 2: just take that small one.
- 7:31Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:32Speaker 2: He says, well, where do you live? And I told
- 7:33Speaker 2: him and he goes, oh, you're gonna need something bigger
- 7:35Speaker 2: than that. And I'm like, yeah, you're trying up sell me,
- 7:38Speaker 2: aren't you. Yeah, well sure enough, he was right, you.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Need you need a heavy dude.
- 7:43Speaker 2: So then we got the heavy duty, the big Honda
- 7:45Speaker 2: with the treads, and everything was great until it stopped snowing.
- 7:50Speaker 2: And now I've got all this gas.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Maybe you could sell the snowblower to put fuel stabilizer
- 7:55Speaker 1: in the gas.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, is that a thing, and it'll keep
- 7:59Speaker 4: until next Yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 1: You just go to go to the you know, like
- 8:04Speaker 1: Ace Hardware or you know three pet the pet boys
- 8:08Speaker 1: go to Pet Boys and.
- 8:09Speaker 2: They have that. Yeah, use the gas for your lawnmower.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I have a guy. I don't have a lawnmower. Or
- 8:17Speaker 1: go up to uh, go up to the Ace Hardware.
- 8:20Speaker 1: They're on Ford, so South, I'll have it there.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Staybill is what it's called a stable and it will
- 8:28Speaker 2: stabilize it.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah mm hmm.
- 8:31Speaker 3: See we learned things here.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I didn't know that that was even a thing. I
- 8:35Speaker 1: had forgot about that until whoever was mentioned it went,
- 8:37Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 8:39Speaker 4: You know a lot of people are gonna want to
- 8:41Speaker 4: know how they can keep gas, like because of the prices.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Because of the.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Price is helpful.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I'm really I'm really good at getting gas, but I
- 8:50Speaker 1: don't know about keeping it.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Is it caked humming bird cake? Well see, now you
- 8:59Speaker 2: gotta bring some in.
- 9:01Speaker 3: You can store gasoline for one to.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Three years without stabilizing it. Well, it's his, it's his
- 9:08Speaker 1: ad stabilizer. Keep containers ninety full, store in a cool,
- 9:15Speaker 1: well ventilated area.
- 9:17Speaker 2: And Roberts Robert says, I should use it to make
- 9:19Speaker 2: a V for Vendetta symbol in the grocery store parking lot.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Set it on fire. Oh I had the ples cake
- 9:26Speaker 1: last night.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Oh yeah, Why did you just be caught because you
- 9:30Speaker 4: just ordered a cake?
- 9:32Speaker 1: We cut it up and put in the freezer.
- 9:34Speaker 3: No, but I mean you just said, hey, we should
- 9:36Speaker 3: get some cake. You can just do that?
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yes, you know why?
- 9:42Speaker 4: Why?
