Transcript
- 0:22Speaker 1: What's going on everyone? Emily a body here. You're listening
- 0:25Speaker 1: to five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I cannot even begin
- 0:31Speaker 1: to tell you how necessary this week has been for me.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I have been off the grid since Tuesday. This is
- 0:40Speaker 1: a trip that I've been looking forward to for months now,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and finally it has been really rejuvenating to take a
- 0:51Speaker 1: step away, especially considering the events of the world right now,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and come back to myself. I know that when work
- 1:02Speaker 1: is busy, in life is busy, and my calendar is
- 1:04Speaker 1: jam packed, that I can be in a place where
- 1:08Speaker 1: I feel as though I am being successful and thriving.
- 1:12Speaker 1: But what I'm actually doing is allowing this noise to
- 1:15Speaker 1: prevent me from dealing with some of the things I
- 1:18Speaker 1: actually need to deal with, which more often than not
- 1:20Speaker 1: consist of my feelings and emotions period. And so to
- 1:27Speaker 1: take a step away from social media this week and
- 1:31Speaker 1: tend to my inbox only at certain times and lay
- 1:35Speaker 1: on the beach and be with myself has been really,
- 1:41Speaker 1: really special. I'll share a little bit more about the
- 1:45Speaker 1: details of this trip in the weekly Hurdle newsletters, so
- 1:48Speaker 1: if you are subscribed to that, it's absolutely free. Definitely
- 1:51Speaker 1: go and check that out. But something I've been thinking
- 1:54Speaker 1: about here this week is the noise. And I'm realizing
- 2:01Speaker 1: that oftentimes it's not until we step out of a
- 2:05Speaker 1: situation that we realize just how loud a noise can be.
- 2:10Speaker 1: For instance, you know, in New York City, right I
- 2:14Speaker 1: live on a high floor in a building, but there
- 2:17Speaker 1: is still the noise of the street and what not downstairs.
- 2:20Speaker 1: But when I am there, because I am so familiar
- 2:23Speaker 1: to this noise, because I have become so desensitized to
- 2:29Speaker 1: the noise, it doesn't feel all that loud. But what
- 2:32Speaker 1: happens when you step away, and you get away and
- 2:35Speaker 1: you realize, for me right now, as I sit in
- 2:39Speaker 1: this hotel room and talk to you about this noise,
- 2:43Speaker 1: that there is so much more quiet, that there is
- 2:46Speaker 1: so much more space to think. We become desensitized to
- 2:49Speaker 1: things that can be constant in our lives, but that
- 2:52Speaker 1: doesn't mean that they aren't impactful. I'll say that again.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Sometimes we can become desensitized to something that may not
- 2:59Speaker 1: be idea deal in our life, but that doesn't mean
- 3:02Speaker 1: that that thing is not uncomfortable. Let's liken this to
- 3:07Speaker 1: a relationship. So often we feel as though we cannot
- 3:12Speaker 1: go on without something that may not be ideal. We
- 3:15Speaker 1: embrace the struggle and something that hurts because it is
- 3:18Speaker 1: scary and unfamiliar to make a switch to get to
- 3:22Speaker 1: the other side of discomfort. But the reality is truly
- 3:27Speaker 1: that you liberate yourself when you step out of your
- 3:30Speaker 1: comfort zone in a situation where something isn't serving you.
- 3:34Speaker 1: You may have been dealing with some sort of ambient
- 3:37Speaker 1: noise in your personal life, some sort of disturbance, but
- 3:41Speaker 1: you've gotten to a place that is familiar, and thus
- 3:45Speaker 1: that noise doesn't feel as loud as it used to.
- 3:49Speaker 1: But what happens if you do yourself the favor to
- 3:52Speaker 1: step away? What happens if you get okay with being
- 3:54Speaker 1: uncomfortable and know that you are deserving of the stillness,
- 3:58Speaker 1: of the silence, of the opportunity to come back to self.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Our lives are bigger than one single thing, one single relationship,
- 4:07Speaker 1: one single chapter, And so often, even though there is
- 4:12Speaker 1: turbulence within a situation, we do not leave. We do
- 4:16Speaker 1: not do anything about it because we have found comfort
- 4:19Speaker 1: amidst to that chaos. But do an audit, right, do
- 4:22Speaker 1: an audit of the things that may be loud in
- 4:24Speaker 1: your life that are less than desirable and ask yourself,
- 4:27Speaker 1: what is it within your power that you can do
- 4:29Speaker 1: in this situation to get to a place of more stillness,
- 4:33Speaker 1: of a more sound way of being. And sometimes that step,
- 4:38Speaker 1: that question, that inquisition, is the thing that you need
- 4:42Speaker 1: to do, is the thing that you've been avoiding because
- 4:44Speaker 1: your calendar is hectic and it's easier to avoid it
- 4:47Speaker 1: than it is to sit with the feelings that come
- 4:49Speaker 1: up when you admit to yourself that something isn't going
- 4:53Speaker 1: in your favor. So I'm asking you what's turbulent in
- 4:57Speaker 1: your life? What do you want to change? What noise
- 5:01Speaker 1: can you cut out? Where can you find that next
- 5:04Speaker 1: good thing? And now a listener question.
- 5:08Speaker 2: How do you stay creative and get creative? You know,
- 5:12Speaker 2: season overseason there's always a different theme, different questions to
- 5:16Speaker 2: be asked to different people that you are interviewing. But
- 5:20Speaker 2: outside of that, how do you find the creativity, the
- 5:24Speaker 2: energy and the interest to continue on with those different
- 5:29Speaker 2: thematics in and out of UH when you're recording each season?
- 5:34Speaker 1: This is a good one. Thank you for this. How
- 5:38Speaker 1: do I get creative and stay creative? It's twofold. The
- 5:43Speaker 1: first part is allowing myself to play. And what I
- 5:46Speaker 1: mean by that is sometimes I just have to take
- 5:48Speaker 1: myself less seriously, I have to let myself think outside
- 5:53Speaker 1: the box and do things that may be unconventional instead
- 5:57Speaker 1: of sitting at my desk and forcing creative Maybe it's
- 6:01Speaker 1: going for a run randomly at eleven am, or walking
- 6:05Speaker 1: around and taking notes about the things that go through
- 6:08Speaker 1: my head. I believe that when I am not at
- 6:14Speaker 1: my desk, when I'm not being rigid with the parameters
- 6:18Speaker 1: that I place around my creativity, that is when I
- 6:22Speaker 1: find my best ideas. And the second part to this
- 6:27Speaker 1: would be I get creative with the help of my people.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I make sure to surround myself with people that not
- 6:34Speaker 1: only inspire me, but fill me up with and I
- 6:38Speaker 1: think that really leads to the part of the question,
- 6:40Speaker 1: how do you stay creative? For me, the people that
- 6:44Speaker 1: surround me inspire me, and their inspiration is what makes
- 6:48Speaker 1: me want to be a better person, a better host,
- 6:52Speaker 1: a better friend, a better human being. And my creativity
- 6:56Speaker 1: is nurtured by these relationships that nurture me. And so
- 7:00Speaker 1: as a new season comes, especially as a buzzy term
- 7:04Speaker 1: here solopreneur, it is so important to me to be
- 7:08Speaker 1: asking questions, looking for feedback, being open to the thoughts
- 7:12Speaker 1: and sentiments of people that I look up to, that
- 7:15Speaker 1: I respect. That's how I stay creative. I play, and
- 7:19Speaker 1: I surround myself with good people that motivate me to
- 7:21Speaker 1: be my best self. I'm always looking for listener questions,
- 7:24Speaker 1: you know the drill over in the show notes, click
- 7:28Speaker 1: leave me a voice message. I've got some New York
- 7:30Speaker 1: City marathon events. I'm going to announce them in both
- 7:33Speaker 1: the Hurdle Podcast story as well as my story over
- 7:36Speaker 1: on Socialists at Hurdle Podcast and at Emily a Body
- 7:40Speaker 1: Another Hurdle Conquered. Catch you guys next time.
