- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 2: It is indeed.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Episode number eighty five of NHL Unscripted. Another Stanley Cup
- 0:25Speaker 1: Finals from Urkan Demurz, special guest Atompson along for the
- 0:28Speaker 1: ride and big news. By the way, you get a
- 0:29Speaker 1: hand of flowers to our own, Jason de Murz, I'll
- 0:32Speaker 1: explain why in a little blit. Plus our special guest
- 0:34Speaker 1: is Chris nilet Knuckles, a former HAVE great and tough
- 0:37Speaker 1: guy with stories about Whitey Bulger.
- 0:39Speaker 2: What yeah that depotted.
- 0:41Speaker 1: We'll get into all that one I I you not
- 0:44Speaker 1: a quol And that's a perfect interruption by Jason Demurs
- 0:48Speaker 1: because how about the chemistry exhibited an NHL Network on
- 0:50Speaker 1: media Day myself and Jason Demurz. All I said was
- 0:53Speaker 1: as Jon Favreau and Vince von Win's famously said, Vegas, Baby, Vegas.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I give a one sentence line, which gave gg enough
- 0:59Speaker 1: time to say their money.
- 1:00Speaker 2: They don't even know it.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I mean, there's so money, sweet honey, baby, sweet honey babies.
- 1:06Speaker 1: JD's probably gonna be off to Vegas soon. Nate and
- 1:08Speaker 1: I believe are just enjoying the Stanley Cup Final from
- 1:09Speaker 1: the comfort of.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Our homes, which will be fantastic.
- 1:11Speaker 1: But as far as the game home was concerned, Fellas,
- 1:13Speaker 1: this was about as as setting as it gets. I
- 1:15Speaker 1: don't want to be that guy. Like in baseball, there's
- 1:17Speaker 1: certain people like a pitcher's duel. I'm like, come on,
- 1:19Speaker 1: like who wants to watch two to one? Similarly in hockey,
- 1:21Speaker 1: like I want to see goals. I don't want to
- 1:22Speaker 1: see bad goals anything the entire series, to be clear,
- 1:24Speaker 1: But if you give me an exciting, back and forth
- 1:26Speaker 1: game like that Eiler scores twenty five seconds into the
- 1:28Speaker 1: game Hurricane to take a two to nothing lead, and
- 1:30Speaker 1: then Vegas comes roaring back and JD's boy Tomash Hurtle
- 1:33Speaker 1: scoring with three twenty four left in regulation. I mean, JD,
- 1:36Speaker 1: this is what I want from a game. One back
- 1:37Speaker 1: and forth, exciting hockey and Vegas wins.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I mean, Carolina did exactly what they're supposed to do.
- 1:44Speaker 3: They came out and they used the fan base that
- 1:47Speaker 3: third line is gonna be a matchup nightmare. Like we said,
- 1:50Speaker 3: who's gonna take down the stall line? They didn't really
- 1:52Speaker 3: find anybody that could because that stall line was great.
- 1:55Speaker 3: But the fear that we had with the first line
- 1:59Speaker 3: of Ajo and Sveechnakov not producing was kind of the difference,
- 2:02Speaker 3: and they gave up one, and you know that it
- 2:06Speaker 3: ended up being that bottom six that kind of was
- 2:11Speaker 3: this weird battle. I don't want to say bottom six
- 2:14Speaker 3: because Carlson that's their second line, but it was the
- 2:16Speaker 3: Carlson line in the hurdle line that just outmatched Aho.
- 2:19Speaker 3: So it's it's gonna be interesting. I think there were
- 2:22Speaker 3: some mistakes, some turnovers both ways, but I mean there
- 2:25Speaker 3: was a beautiful miked up moment where they're down two
- 2:28Speaker 3: nothing and John Tortorella, they had him on my he
- 2:31Speaker 3: was miked up and he's going stick to our game,
- 2:33Speaker 3: be patient. We can't go east west because they're gonna
- 2:36Speaker 3: kill us. So they've figured out something. They understand that
- 2:39Speaker 3: they have to allow Carolina to come to them and CounterPunch,
- 2:42Speaker 3: and I thought once they did that, they settled in
- 2:44Speaker 3: and Carolina kind of shot themselves in a foot in
- 2:46Speaker 3: the foot and maybe this is just the way they're
- 2:49Speaker 3: going to start the last two rounds. Is kind of
- 2:52Speaker 3: giving up one where Freddy's a little shaky, but yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 3: this is uh, this is gonna be a great matchup
- 2:57Speaker 3: as advertised. I'm excited to see the adjustments into game two.
- 3:01Speaker 3: But yeah, that my thoughts was that this is it's
- 3:04Speaker 3: a game of matchups here in the series.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Speaking of matchups, Nate Rob Brindemore was not shy when
- 3:09Speaker 1: asked Affords about his top one and he said, quote,
- 3:11Speaker 1: they had one good shift there in the third. You
- 3:13Speaker 1: saw the opportunity by Seth Jarvis. Thatsha otherwise because yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 1: they've got a step up.
- 3:16Speaker 2: He didn't blast him. I think it could have been
- 3:17Speaker 2: a lot harsher.
- 3:18Speaker 1: But at JD's point, Hurricanes are not winning unless that
- 3:21Speaker 1: top line plays immeasurably better.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Yeah, he's right, and I think moving forward for Carolina,
- 3:26Speaker 4: like that's a key key part of the series for Carolina,
- 3:29Speaker 4: moving for like, aho line has to be really good.
- 3:31Speaker 4: They have to be better for Carolina to get over
- 3:34Speaker 4: the hump against Vegas, because you saw the depth come
- 3:36Speaker 4: on display last night for Vegas.
- 3:39Speaker 5: And I think on.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Top of that, their power play like special teams for
- 3:42Speaker 4: them could be a difference maker for them against Vegas.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Just because we saw Vegas like they were, they looked
- 3:49Speaker 4: dangerous last night. I know they didn't score in the
- 3:50Speaker 4: power play, but the power play looked dangerous. They got
- 3:52Speaker 4: momentum from it, and I think for Carolina they're gonna
- 3:56Speaker 4: have to clean some things up for sure. But I
- 4:00Speaker 4: was really impressed with the way Vegas managed that game
- 4:03Speaker 4: last night. It was they got stronger as the game
- 4:05Speaker 4: went on. And to your point, JD, as soon as
- 4:08Speaker 4: Towards called that time out, their whole game changed. Their
- 4:11Speaker 4: whole game change and they kind of went back to
- 4:13Speaker 4: how they were in the previous series and just their
- 4:17Speaker 4: experience was on to play on display last night.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Another thought, JD, with reguards to Game one, I just
- 4:22Speaker 1: want to know how fair or foul is this Freddie Anderson.
- 4:24Speaker 1: The thought was didn't face a lot of vulcanized rubber right,
- 4:27Speaker 1: didn't have a lot of shots against Vegas a different
- 4:29Speaker 1: offensive attack. Is Freddie allowed to have one bad game
- 4:32Speaker 1: or is this a fact that he's gonna be facing
- 4:33Speaker 1: a much better offense.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, listen, he had a bad game in
- 4:37Speaker 3: Game one. I think, you know, I think the one
- 4:40Speaker 3: thing Vegas exploited and I you know, to do sit
- 4:45Speaker 3: down and do video and post because I want to
- 4:47Speaker 3: post it on Twitter is the Carlson goal. And then
- 4:50Speaker 3: The hurdle goal is because they and that's what Montreal
- 4:53Speaker 3: got to in Game one, because they played that one
- 4:56Speaker 3: on one style and.
- 4:57Speaker 6: They play very tight checking.
- 4:58Speaker 3: If you can get a give and go and get
- 5:01Speaker 3: off that first check that guy that's getting that pass,
- 5:04Speaker 3: you basically can make a no look blind into an
- 5:07Speaker 3: area and if you can just beat that defender. So
- 5:10Speaker 3: the Marner pass to Carlson was because they fucked up
- 5:14Speaker 3: coverage and two guys went on Howd and Howden wins
- 5:17Speaker 3: a battle, so Marner doesn't even need to look. He
- 5:19Speaker 3: just throws it to the middle. Carlson's alone. The hurdle
- 5:22Speaker 3: goal is the same thing. Hurdle beats his check, sists
- 5:25Speaker 3: and sees it. All he's got to do is throw
- 5:27Speaker 3: no look because that's the spot that's you expose him
- 5:30Speaker 3: because it's hard in that man on man style. If
- 5:33Speaker 3: there's a breakdown, a one on one breakdown, you just
- 5:35Speaker 3: got to get into an area and it's a scoring chance.
- 5:37Speaker 6: So I think they exposed that well.
- 5:39Speaker 3: So I think that, you know, I don't discredit Freddy
- 5:42Speaker 3: because they got to card Hart as well. A lot
- 5:44Speaker 3: on the blocker side. Uh and Marner makes that block
- 5:48Speaker 3: at the end of the game with otherwise, I think
- 5:49Speaker 3: that that shot for Nikisha was in.
- 5:52Speaker 6: But I think it's just a great hockey game.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Honestly, Well, mass is gonna be It's gonna be fucking fantastic.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Also, Nate, I want to ask you to play at
- 6:00Speaker 1: Brett Howden. I mean, you gotta have players who are
- 6:02Speaker 1: not necessarily the biggest stars. This is not Jack Eichele
- 6:04Speaker 1: take over. Mitch Marner Howden, who's not exactly an offensive
- 6:07Speaker 1: force terrific in the back.
- 6:08Speaker 4: End, Well, he's an offensive force now and I think
- 6:11Speaker 4: him playing with Carlson and Marner has definitely helped. But yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 4: this guy, he's just he hasn't been afraid to go
- 6:17Speaker 4: to the hard areas in the net. And I know that,
- 6:19Speaker 4: you know, we talk about that in the playoffs, but
- 6:21Speaker 4: he keeps doing that. Every time that there's pucking around
- 6:23Speaker 4: the net, around around Freddy Anderson, he's there. And it
- 6:27Speaker 4: was a hell of a play from you know, Schey
- 6:29Speaker 4: Theodore and gets back door and makes a good play.
- 6:32Speaker 4: So you know, if they can continue for him to
- 6:35Speaker 4: get the scoring he has been for Vegas Golden Knights,
- 6:38Speaker 4: it's it's looking really good for them with that, With
- 6:40Speaker 4: that balance that balance lineup.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and it feels like JD game to a must
- 6:45Speaker 1: win for Carolina or is that a reach?
- 6:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think it matters. I mean, listen, it
- 6:49Speaker 3: always matters, but it, you know, finals a lot more
- 6:54Speaker 3: buzz to it. I think Caroline is gonna take Game two.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I think they'll find a way either Freddie Anderson has
- 7:00Speaker 3: a big game, probably something from KeAndre Millet. You know,
- 7:04Speaker 3: like Slaven didn't play great yesterday either. He had he
- 7:06Speaker 3: had a bad turnover on I think the I think
- 7:10Speaker 3: it was the fuck whose goal was that? But Slaving
- 7:14Speaker 3: had a turnover on one of the one of the
- 7:16Speaker 3: goals and didn't play his best game. So I expect
- 7:19Speaker 3: him a good game. I just chalk it up to
- 7:22Speaker 3: they just a couple of mistakes and and Carolina has
- 7:24Speaker 3: done a good job of figuring teams out after game one.
- 7:27Speaker 3: So yeah, it's gonna be a lot of fun. But
- 7:30Speaker 3: I would bet my bottom dollar that Carolina wins tomorrow.
- 7:34Speaker 2: All right, tell wants us to move on from the
- 7:36Speaker 2: Cup file, so we will.
- 7:36Speaker 6: Let's move on to Yeah, what's in the news today?
- 7:40Speaker 2: Seven minutes a Cup final talk, that's enough, let's get Yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 6: That's it. Let's talk baseball the Blue Jays.
- 7:47Speaker 2: We'll talk a little Jay.
- 7:48Speaker 1: You have a lot of juniors are struggling right now,
- 7:50Speaker 1: Mac Daddy. A huge job in Nashville finally been filled
- 7:53Speaker 1: four months after general manager Berry Trotz announced it would
- 7:55Speaker 1: be stepping down, the Preds announcing Tuesday that Colorado GM
- 7:58Speaker 1: Chris mcfar on the new president general manager in Music City.
- 8:01Speaker 1: He joined the Abs in twenty fifteen as assistant general manager,
- 8:03Speaker 1: for going the top job in twenty twenty two. So
- 8:05Speaker 1: Joe Sakik, who is the current team president, will take
- 8:08Speaker 1: over as a GM in Colorado.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Your thoughts on the higher and eight overall?
- 8:11Speaker 1: This is a Nashville team that missed the playoffs the
- 8:14Speaker 1: last two seasons, hasn't won.
- 8:15Speaker 2: A playoffs service is twenty eighteen.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it's a good hire. You know.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Chris McFarland has definitely established has done a great job
- 8:22Speaker 4: in Colorado, has done it, I think, a really good
- 8:25Speaker 4: job at the trade deadline, free agency. So I mean
- 8:27Speaker 4: he's gonna have his his work cutout for him in Nashville.
- 8:31Speaker 4: And I guess the big question mark is what direction
- 8:33Speaker 4: is he going to go? What is he going to
- 8:35Speaker 4: do with guys like Stam Cooast and O'Reilly and these guys.
- 8:37Speaker 4: You know that they signed that Barry trot signed, so
- 8:40Speaker 4: you know, for Chris McFarland, I wonder, you know, And
- 8:43Speaker 4: I heard a rumor that he got a got a
- 8:45Speaker 4: nice bag, got a nice long term deal. So he's
- 8:47Speaker 4: going to have a runway to work with this team
- 8:50Speaker 4: money man. Ye, well.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Got the bag.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Uh yeah, I mean I'm surprised that Colorado let the
- 9:00Speaker 3: you know, Nashville, who's in the same division as them,
- 9:03Speaker 3: ye to McFarlane, and Vegas didn't let Cassidy talk to
- 9:08Speaker 3: the Oilers let him get it back too, So there's
- 9:13Speaker 3: a lot of love. They must have left on good terms.
- 9:16Speaker 3: But yeah, I think it's a good hire for Nashville.
- 9:17Speaker 3: I think we figured something would happen with them before
- 9:21Speaker 3: the draft, and I think they were just we had
- 9:23Speaker 3: talked about it.
- 9:24Speaker 6: I think early we're just waiting. They were waiting for.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Colorado to get knocked out of the playoffs or win
- 9:29Speaker 3: the Cup. So it's probably good that they got knocked
- 9:32Speaker 3: out against Vegas because if they go on to win,
- 9:35Speaker 3: I mean, McFarland only really has like three weeks to
- 9:41Speaker 3: get ready for the draft because I guaranteed the deal
- 9:44Speaker 3: was signed a month ago. Yeah, I'm sure, and they
- 9:48Speaker 3: just couldn't announce it. And I'm sure Colorado knew a
- 9:51Speaker 3: month ago or two months ago, and they're like, you
- 9:53Speaker 3: can't announce it until after. So he's sitting there being like,
- 9:56Speaker 3: do I want to win a Cup? And then I
- 9:58Speaker 3: have three weeks to get this predator's organization ready to
- 10:01Speaker 3: put my fingerprints all over it. So it's pretty funny,
- 10:03Speaker 3: but yeah, it's a good hire for them, great direction.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Who's the Manny big news in a Vancouver is Many
- 10:09Speaker 1: malhoach of the twenty third head coach in Vancouver Canucks history,
- 10:12Speaker 1: replacing Adam Foote after just one season. Malhocher was the
- 10:15Speaker 1: head coach of Vancouver's HL Teaman abbots Ford for the
- 10:18Speaker 1: past two seasons, winning the Calder Cup in twenty twenty five.
- 10:21Speaker 1: As a player, he played three of his seventeen NHL
- 10:24Speaker 1: seasons in Vancouver and also JD. Most importantly, Big Time
- 10:27Speaker 1: for Brown People. Sonny Meta now the GM of the
- 10:30Speaker 1: Devil's Many Mahoaches. Father's Indians and I'm a Pakistan descent
- 10:34Speaker 1: and I gets to do NHL in scripted.
- 10:35Speaker 2: So the brown people are taking over here.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Okay, so you're so you're asking a white man about
- 10:42Speaker 3: what I think the brown people in Vancouver's about what
- 10:45Speaker 3: I think of diversity hires, that's all you're asking me.
- 10:49Speaker 6: Heres a white man, what do I think about diversity? Diversity? Oh, okay, diversity,
- 10:57Speaker 6: that's up far ah. Yeah.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Manny Mault was my teammate and San Jose is the
- 11:02Speaker 3: smartest team and I've ever played the most intelligent what
- 11:06Speaker 3: a great hockey player and has established himself as just
- 11:10Speaker 3: an amazing coach, has a great mind for the game.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Is Vancouver in the running to get Caleb his son? Yeah,
- 11:17Speaker 3: so like he might have Papa Papa coaching his son.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Coleb McKenna goes first, one of your stars, pick a defenseman,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and then he picks his kid third and Stembrick falls
- 11:27Speaker 1: to four.
- 11:29Speaker 6: No, he's not going over step.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Was he was?
- 11:31Speaker 2: He?
- 11:31Speaker 5: Kind of? Is he is? He kind of like a
- 11:34Speaker 5: Rod Brindamore. You played with him like he might.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Many was a Manny I would probably say. Manny was
- 11:40Speaker 3: like a version of like Jordan Stall, Like he's like, uh,
- 11:44Speaker 3: he's a good third line center, unbelievable, great, great in.
- 11:48Speaker 6: The face off.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Had Skill was a great penalty killer and uh yeah,
- 11:54Speaker 3: just an intelligent hockey player.
- 11:56Speaker 6: Had he had he had an eye. He got hit
- 11:58Speaker 6: in the eye as well.
- 11:59Speaker 5: Right, that's right, yeah he did.
- 12:01Speaker 6: He got hit in the eye.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Was pretty crazy, absolutely shreded. Married Steve Nash's sister. So
- 12:08Speaker 3: I remember I went to his house and had dinner
- 12:11Speaker 3: with him and his wife, and I met Steve here
- 12:14Speaker 3: in Phoenix because he's around Phoenix a lot. So I
- 12:16Speaker 3: went up to Phoenix and said, I know your wife,
- 12:18Speaker 3: I know your sister Joanne and Manny and and uh yeah.
- 12:23Speaker 3: So just I just name dropped the fuck out of
- 12:26Speaker 3: that second.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Steve have been great, great guy.
- 12:29Speaker 6: Awesome guy.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a really good guy. But I just name
- 12:31Speaker 3: dropped the ship out of that. I'm gonna drop anymore.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Name Steve right, great to Nate, Steve Nash, I met him,
- 12:38Speaker 3: he knows my name.
- 12:39Speaker 1: But the idea of Caleb, I mean his son, I mean,
- 12:41Speaker 1: Bosh University commit one of the top rank players in
- 12:43Speaker 1: the draft.
- 12:44Speaker 2: It would just be crazy to me the imagine he's
- 12:46Speaker 2: not going. So there's no chance, no, because I don't know.
- 12:50Speaker 4: I mean, I've had one instance where I played with
- 12:53Speaker 4: Adam Lowry and his dad, Dave Lowry, was the assistant coach,
- 12:57Speaker 4: and I think he ended up I left the next
- 12:59Speaker 4: year and he ended up being the head coach and
- 13:02Speaker 4: coaching Adam. So that's the only I've know, what's the
- 13:05Speaker 4: only insince I've ever been a part of that with
- 13:07Speaker 4: the NHL.
- 13:07Speaker 5: So I don't know.
- 13:08Speaker 4: I don't know how that would turn out. I don't
- 13:11Speaker 4: think that he ends up there, just because of the
- 13:14Speaker 4: dynamic and being in Canada and your dad being the
- 13:16Speaker 4: head coach, the new head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.
- 13:18Speaker 4: It just seems like a lot.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a fun story to think about, but more
- 13:22Speaker 2: than one.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, still to come Chris Nylan, our special guest.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Does he talk about whitey ballser you'll find out anshell
- 13:29Speaker 1: and scripted after this, our next guest. Was drafted in
- 13:46Speaker 1: the nineteenth round Tour and thirty first overall by the
- 13:48Speaker 1: Montreal Canadians in the nineteen seventy NHL draft.
- 13:51Speaker 2: He collected one hundred and ten goals tour.
- 13:53Speaker 1: And twenty five points and three thousand and forty three
- 13:55Speaker 1: penalty minutes in six hundred and eighty eight career games.
- 13:58Speaker 1: The Habs, Rangers and Bruins, a Cup winner with Montreal
- 14:02Speaker 1: in nineteen eighty six.
- 14:03Speaker 2: It is Chris Nollen. Chris, it's great to see it.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Thanks so much. Welcome unscripted.
- 14:06Speaker 7: Yeah, thanks for having me. Guys.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I can't wait to get into all the stories from
- 14:10Speaker 1: your career. But first and foremost, you're active in the
- 14:12Speaker 1: media these days. What do you think of this Cup
- 14:14Speaker 1: final matchup and that game won as Vegas wins five four.
- 14:17Speaker 8: Well, you know, I thought, I thought, listen, I picked
- 14:21Speaker 8: Vegas at six, but I really they're a big team.
- 14:25Speaker 8: They're a talented team as opposed to what Carolina faced
- 14:30Speaker 8: against Montreal. You know, a fast team, a puck possession team,
- 14:35Speaker 8: transition team, you know, Vegas.
- 14:38Speaker 7: I just like this size, their ability to score.
- 14:43Speaker 8: You know, I love what Mana's doing, so yeah, you know,
- 14:46Speaker 8: looking at the first game then when it started he
- 14:49Speaker 8: was getting those two quickies, it was like, oh my god,
- 14:53Speaker 8: I kind of felt like, you know, I picked the
- 14:57Speaker 8: wrong team.
- 14:59Speaker 7: But it's only one game.
- 15:02Speaker 8: Like the Habs won the first game against Carolina and
- 15:05Speaker 8: you would have thought they were off set of races
- 15:07Speaker 8: and Carolina is gonna have a tough time, but they
- 15:11Speaker 8: made certainly made adjustments and finished them off pretty good.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Chris, you know you mentioned Marner and I was like asking,
- 15:20Speaker 3: you know, old school guys too, of what do you
- 15:23Speaker 3: make of you know, the Toronto media kind of constantly,
- 15:27Speaker 3: no matter how good he does outside of Toronto, they'll
- 15:29Speaker 3: always kind of bring it back to you know, why
- 15:31Speaker 3: wasn't he doing this here? And do you make any
- 15:35Speaker 3: comparables of like, yeah, it's it's because of the media
- 15:38Speaker 3: or is it just that Marner's got a better team
- 15:40Speaker 3: around him?
- 15:41Speaker 7: Well, a combination of both.
- 15:43Speaker 8: Listen, I think he was marginalized theres somewhat and you know,
- 15:48Speaker 8: he could never do anything wrong. I've seen him in
- 15:50Speaker 8: playoffs series there, blocking shots, given his best and listen,
- 15:54Speaker 8: playoff hockey's tough. It's different than the regular season. I
- 15:57Speaker 8: know one thing. Austin Matthews missed him when he left,
- 16:01Speaker 8: There's no question, and then everybody gave him a hot
- 16:03Speaker 8: time because he's asking too much money, blah blah blah.
- 16:06Speaker 8: You know they were never happy when they Honestly, I
- 16:10Speaker 8: felt bad for the kid. But you know, with the
- 16:13Speaker 8: with the big money comes, you know, the big expectations
- 16:19Speaker 8: and if you don't reach them, then you know you're
- 16:21Speaker 8: gonna get fan bases the media that are gonna shit
- 16:24Speaker 8: all over you. So you know, I'm real happy for him.
- 16:28Speaker 8: I think he's certainly with a better team. I mean,
- 16:31Speaker 8: come on, look at the defense as opposed to what
- 16:34Speaker 8: he had in Toronto and the depth they have this
- 16:38Speaker 8: So you know, I I love what he's doing. And
- 16:42Speaker 8: you know, yeah, he got dumped on there for sure,
- 16:45Speaker 8: and I'm glad he's doing well. I hope he goes
- 16:48Speaker 8: on and it just rips it up the rest of
- 16:50Speaker 8: away and wins the Consmike and a Stanley Cup.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Yeah, that would be nice, really nice, and I'm sure
- 16:56Speaker 4: the Toronto paperless fans would love that. You mentioned your
- 17:00Speaker 4: former team, the Montreal Canadians, and you know they just
- 17:02Speaker 4: went on this long playoff un and was there something
- 17:05Speaker 4: that really stuck out you impressed you about this group?
- 17:08Speaker 8: Well, their talent level, they got great talent. But one
- 17:12Speaker 8: I thought this all on a couple of things. I
- 17:14Speaker 8: thought from the beginning of the season, I saw it all. Yeah,
- 17:17Speaker 8: and listen, they've made great strides. I'm not taking anything
- 17:20Speaker 8: away from tremendous what they did in the playoffs, but
- 17:23Speaker 8: if you really dissect it all and look at it
- 17:26Speaker 8: they are, you know, and I said for the playoffs,
- 17:30Speaker 8: and I hate going back, but I did. I was
- 17:34Speaker 8: on a podcast and they asked me about the team,
- 17:36Speaker 8: and I said, listen, they're terrible in their own end.
- 17:40Speaker 8: They have a real difficult time in their own end.
- 17:43Speaker 8: And you know, if they can't get that skating game going,
- 17:48Speaker 8: they're gonna be in trouble. You can't rely on Dobeesh
- 17:51Speaker 8: to do it all. And certainly he did in the playoffs.
- 17:55Speaker 8: He's incredible what he did. And I think he eventually
- 17:58Speaker 8: tied it out, and so didn't they They're just they're
- 18:02Speaker 8: too small and you look at the back end, all right,
- 18:05Speaker 8: you get six D there, right. The only guy who's
- 18:08Speaker 8: really physical is Gholeye. The only guy that's really physical
- 18:13Speaker 8: is Gooleye. The Hudson for trying and he's smart playing
- 18:17Speaker 8: and all that, but they don't have a physical decour
- 18:19Speaker 8: at all.
- 18:20Speaker 7: And you know that's tough when you're in you know,
- 18:23Speaker 7: it's great.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Yeah, Arbor, but yeah, Arber's just not he's not He's yeah,
- 18:28Speaker 3: he's not in enough.
- 18:29Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, I don't I think I
- 18:33Speaker 8: don't think he's developed, you know, the way they probably
- 18:37Speaker 8: would have liked him.
- 18:38Speaker 7: But some of that's on them too, It's not all
- 18:41Speaker 7: on him.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I need those great habs offense.
- 18:43Speaker 1: And like my guy Chris Jella is Craig Ludwig obviously, Uh,
- 18:46Speaker 1: as far as your career is concerned, knuckles.
- 18:48Speaker 2: But in nineteen eighty eighty one and eighty seven eighty eight.
- 18:50Speaker 1: You and Dave Tiger Williams tied for the NHL E
- 18:53Speaker 1: two two hundred and twenty pelia minutes.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Jesus, you led the league in.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Eighty four eighty five with a three hundred and fifty
- 18:59Speaker 1: eight pelia minutes.
- 19:00Speaker 2: How vicious was the league back then? And it was
- 19:03Speaker 2: the toughest son of a bitch play against them?
- 19:05Speaker 8: No, they all the listen, all those guys that do that,
- 19:08Speaker 8: Drava tough, the toughest guy to play against.
- 19:10Speaker 7: They were all tough, no matter who you were up against.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Who fought Robert's a different tough.
- 19:16Speaker 9: No, Yeah, but probably yeah, probably I've give them that,
- 19:20Speaker 9: But don't put fucking words in my mouth. All right,
- 19:28Speaker 9: Just all the guys who do that Java tough, they
- 19:30Speaker 9: do you have to be to do that night in
- 19:32Speaker 9: the night out.
- 19:34Speaker 8: Uh, constantly be ready to fight constantly, be ready to
- 19:37Speaker 8: you know, stick up for teammate or something like that.
- 19:40Speaker 7: Yeah, it was a different game back then. Listen. I
- 19:43Speaker 7: loved it. I loved what I did. I enjoyed it.
- 19:47Speaker 7: It was tough.
- 19:48Speaker 8: It was tough on me, but I love sticking up
- 19:51Speaker 8: for my teammates. I didn't mind fighting. There were times
- 19:54Speaker 8: that it certainly graded on me at times, especially as
- 19:59Speaker 8: I got older, it got more difficult, but I still
- 20:02Speaker 8: did it and it did not get at any easier
- 20:05Speaker 8: when I hit the age at thirty four.
- 20:07Speaker 1: The three of us all work at HL Network, and
- 20:09Speaker 1: we work at the Great Steve Grimson.
- 20:10Speaker 2: What was it like fighting the Grim Reaper?
- 20:12Speaker 8: Well, the story on that is the end of my
- 20:17Speaker 8: last year when I was in Boston.
- 20:19Speaker 7: I'll never forget it.
- 20:21Speaker 8: I fought the Grim Reaper, and you know, he was like,
- 20:25Speaker 8: his arms are done, and his ankles.
- 20:27Speaker 7: And he's polling at the mouth. He's gonna fight me.
- 20:31Speaker 7: I ended up fighting. I remember I hung in there
- 20:35Speaker 7: with him.
- 20:35Speaker 8: But he had made some good punches and I remember
- 20:38Speaker 8: going the penalty box and I was like, WHOA.
- 20:40Speaker 7: This is getting tough.
- 20:41Speaker 8: And I already kind of questioned myself during the season.
- 20:45Speaker 8: I was kind of in my head, like you know,
- 20:47Speaker 8: I felt just and when you're in your head like that,
- 20:52Speaker 8: it's not good, you know. At thirty four years old,
- 20:54Speaker 8: I believe me. I really feel that's a cutoff point
- 20:57Speaker 8: for a forward for the most part, unless you're a
- 21:00Speaker 8: superstar and you can milk it a little longer. And
- 21:05Speaker 8: the next night I ended up fighting. And this is
- 21:08Speaker 8: funny story. I was in the Boston Garden and I
- 21:12Speaker 8: was taping my sticks out in the hall where we're
- 21:15Speaker 8: usually tape them outside the room, and.
- 21:20Speaker 7: Five whalers come walking up. How for whales? We were
- 21:24Speaker 7: playing and we're going to see them in the playoffs.
- 21:26Speaker 8: It's crazy anyway, They're walking up and Big Jim McKenzie's did.
- 21:31Speaker 7: And he's staring at me. He's staring at me, and
- 21:35Speaker 7: I looked back at him. I said, what the fuck
- 21:37Speaker 7: are you looking at? And he just kept walking right.
- 21:41Speaker 8: So all the guys I had him on my podcast
- 21:44Speaker 8: and he told the story. He said, after you say,
- 21:47Speaker 8: he said, Nook, I grew up as a habstream. I
- 21:50Speaker 8: was a big fan of yours. I was just looking
- 21:52Speaker 8: at you because the first time I saw you in person,
- 21:55Speaker 8: and he said, you said that to me, and then
- 21:57Speaker 8: everybody in the locker room started you better go after
- 22:00Speaker 8: him and I and sure enough he did, and he
- 22:03Speaker 8: laid the lump on my head and then I got
- 22:06Speaker 8: in the box again. I go, oh, this is getting tough,
- 22:09Speaker 8: and yeah those two fights there really well ones that
- 22:13Speaker 8: really let me know in up here that yeah, this
- 22:17Speaker 8: is really difficult to do, you know, twenty year old kid,
- 22:22Speaker 8: I'm thirty four. I remember being there with O'Reilly and
- 22:25Speaker 8: Jonathan and Sea Code and this one and that one
- 22:29Speaker 8: because I wanted to make a name. And now now
- 22:32Speaker 8: it's getting done to me. Not a lot of fun.
- 22:35Speaker 3: Well let's get I mean, let's get to the you know.
- 22:37Speaker 3: The fun part for me is you know, you're a
- 22:39Speaker 3: Boston guy, played at Northeastern and you go to Montreal,
- 22:42Speaker 3: my hometown. Like how was that arriving there in nineteen eighty,
- 22:45Speaker 3: Like what are your thoughts being there? Is it a
- 22:47Speaker 3: culture shock a little bit being going from Boston to Montreal?
- 22:52Speaker 3: Which is it huge rivalry in itself?
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 22:54Speaker 7: I drafted. I was drafted seventy eight, right, So I
- 22:57Speaker 7: stayed in school one more. Yeah, I wanted to leave
- 22:59Speaker 7: that year, but like my father wouldn't let me. He
- 23:01Speaker 7: was gonna kick my ass if I left school. So
- 23:04Speaker 7: I stayed in another year.
- 23:05Speaker 8: And I half asked it, and finally I said, I
- 23:09Speaker 8: got to leave. So I went in seventy nine in
- 23:11Speaker 8: my first camp, and I hated the Canadians. I hated
- 23:15Speaker 8: them growing up at Bruins fan. They broke our hearts
- 23:18Speaker 8: all the time, beat us all the time. And even
- 23:21Speaker 8: after I was drafted seventy that seventy eight to seventy nine,
- 23:25Speaker 8: the fourth in a row, I remember watching it and
- 23:28Speaker 8: just being devastated, even though I get drafted by them.
- 23:31Speaker 8: I'm like, I wanted the branch to win, and the
- 23:35Speaker 8: scores and then Lombia comes down and taps one in
- 23:39Speaker 8: and the game's over. Series over. They go on and
- 23:42Speaker 8: spank the Rangers. But you know I went to training camp.
- 23:46Speaker 8: You know I didn't. I can't say it didn't do much,
- 23:50Speaker 8: but you know I tried to hit I tried. It
- 23:53Speaker 8: was just a level for me to jump up. That
- 23:57Speaker 8: was difficult, you know. You know I went after guys
- 24:01Speaker 8: try to hit them, but I wasn't going there. I
- 24:03Speaker 8: think I'm going to fight anybody. I wasn't gonna take
- 24:05Speaker 8: any ship if it came my way. But I wasn't
- 24:08Speaker 8: going to look for a fight. I was looking to
- 24:10Speaker 8: play physical and uh if I could get you know,
- 24:13Speaker 8: score a goal off my ass and great.
- 24:16Speaker 7: But yeah it was different. I was intimidating a little
- 24:21Speaker 7: bit too.
- 24:23Speaker 6: By the city or just like the organization.
- 24:26Speaker 8: Like see all of a sudden out there, Gala Flur, Robinson,
- 24:30Speaker 8: all these search Sabad galer Point, the big three of
- 24:33Speaker 8: the you know shot. You know, Lamar had left and
- 24:37Speaker 8: Dryden had left, but there's still a rise. Bro Mario
- 24:42Speaker 8: tromlay Ton of guys was still there, and I'm like, man,
- 24:45Speaker 8: do I belong here?
- 24:47Speaker 3: You know who's the guy that kind of brought you
- 24:49Speaker 3: in and was like took It's like, hey, I'm gonna
- 24:50Speaker 3: take you under your my wing, kid and and show
- 24:52Speaker 3: you around.
- 24:53Speaker 8: Well, I got sent down and I had a five
- 24:56Speaker 8: game tryout with the Voyage Jersey for two hundred bucks
- 25:01Speaker 8: a game. They gave me a five game trial. I
- 25:03Speaker 8: was happy have me as a clam in the sand,
- 25:06Speaker 8: and I figured, oh, now I got a chance. And
- 25:11Speaker 8: Bert Templeton was the coach. Remember that junior team to
- 25:14Speaker 8: punch up in Pistony right and Russia and the Okay.
- 25:18Speaker 8: Burt was a coach and Bert coached at Subury and
- 25:21Speaker 8: he always had tough team. And I go to training
- 25:25Speaker 8: camp down there. He was also the GM and you know,
- 25:29Speaker 8: like he didn't like college kids, right, Tim Burke was
- 25:32Speaker 8: the guy. Really, Timmy Burke was head scout out at
- 25:36Speaker 8: San Jose for years.
- 25:37Speaker 6: He was my room.
- 25:38Speaker 7: I love Burkey. He's the best.
- 25:41Speaker 6: He's the best, right, and tell you.
- 25:43Speaker 7: Everything about anything.
- 25:45Speaker 8: And he were roommates me, him and Rick Maha.
- 25:50Speaker 7: But we got there and Burkey said, listen, this coach
- 25:54Speaker 7: he don't like college kids, so just get at the
- 25:56Speaker 7: end of the line and watch what happens and then
- 26:00Speaker 7: do the drill. But don't be first in the drill.
- 26:02Speaker 7: So I'm like, okay. So there's a kid from Merymack College,
- 26:06Speaker 7: Richie Costello, and rich was right at the front of
- 26:12Speaker 7: the line.
- 26:12Speaker 8: He wanted and pressed Burt, and he fucked the drill
- 26:14Speaker 8: up right, so Bert blows the whistle. He goes, Costello,
- 26:21Speaker 8: you dumb fuck. I thought you college kids were supposed
- 26:25Speaker 8: to be fucking smart. Get at the end of the
- 26:28Speaker 8: fucking line now, and poor rich like, forget about it.
- 26:33Speaker 8: He just melted into his skates, right, I felt so
- 26:36Speaker 8: bad for him. He was a nice kid.
- 26:39Speaker 7: Gone the next day, Gone Rich wasn't there.
- 26:44Speaker 8: So Bertie told me like, yeah, just this guy's different,
- 26:48Speaker 8: and sure enough that five game trial. I had one
- 26:53Speaker 8: fight in the preseason with the kids, so they kind
- 26:57Speaker 8: of kept me around and gave me that trial.
- 26:59Speaker 7: In the year.
- 27:00Speaker 8: Before, in the playoffs, the Voyag Druids lost four games
- 27:03Speaker 8: straight to Maine Phillies fon team and Glenn Cochran was
- 27:07Speaker 8: a raining heavyweight. So the first four games in Nova Scotia,
- 27:12Speaker 8: I don't play, and I sit in the stand. I mean,
- 27:16Speaker 8: what's going on in and I end up we end
- 27:22Speaker 8: up going to Maine to play the first game on
- 27:25Speaker 8: the road and I'm gonna play. And the first shift
- 27:30Speaker 8: I get on the ice, I ended up hitting Cochran.
- 27:32Speaker 8: I ran him and he turned around and slashed me.
- 27:35Speaker 7: Boom boom. We stopped fighting.
- 27:36Speaker 8: I cut him open really bad under his cheek and
- 27:40Speaker 8: I got kicked out of the game, both of us.
- 27:42Speaker 7: He went nuts, I went nuts. We get kicked out.
- 27:45Speaker 8: I thought I was gonna get sent to Flint because
- 27:47Speaker 8: I got kicked out. I thought I was in trouble, right.
- 27:49Speaker 8: I didn't know the pro hockey deal. I really didn't.
- 27:53Speaker 8: And the next morning I got a call from the coach. Hey,
- 27:57Speaker 8: come down my room.
- 27:57Speaker 7: I gotta talk to you.
- 27:58Speaker 8: I'm like, oh fuck, I'm gonna get sent down at Flint.
- 28:01Speaker 8: Fucking Flint all places right in the internationally.
- 28:06Speaker 7: And uh. I walked in the room and he puts
- 28:10Speaker 7: his hand out.
- 28:10Speaker 8: He goes, great job last night, and oh, thinks Shane
- 28:14Speaker 8: pretty quick in my mind.
- 28:15Speaker 7: He goes, listen, do you have an agent?
- 28:17Speaker 8: And I said no, I don't have an agent, like
- 28:20Speaker 8: fucking seventeen round, nineteen round pick don't have agents. And
- 28:25Speaker 8: he said, well you better final one. The Canadians want
- 28:28Speaker 8: to sign you a contract. I signed a contract that
- 28:31Speaker 8: week after one fight, one game, one fight.
- 28:35Speaker 7: It's crazy.
- 28:35Speaker 6: Wow, there's nuts.
- 28:38Speaker 5: That's that's incredible.
- 28:39Speaker 4: What a story, you know, just getting to play for
- 28:43Speaker 4: the Montreal Canadians and experiencing that. Next talk about you know,
- 28:46Speaker 4: nineteen eighty six and the experience of winning the Stanley
- 28:49Speaker 4: Cup in Montreal and what that was like.
- 28:51Speaker 8: Oh, it's incredible. You know what it's like playing in Montreal,
- 28:55Speaker 8: you do with it. You got a taste of that,
- 28:57Speaker 8: but to win, Uh, it's just a whole on the
- 29:01Speaker 8: level you know we had gone to before, to the
- 29:05Speaker 8: conference final against the Islanders, and we get up two
- 29:08Speaker 8: games to nothing and we're feeling good about ourselves, and
- 29:13Speaker 8: then they spanked us four straight.
- 29:15Speaker 7: We lost four two.
- 29:16Speaker 8: So we come back to the airport and you won't
- 29:19Speaker 8: believe all the people at the airport. We lost in
- 29:21Speaker 8: the conference final, and all these people at the airport.
- 29:24Speaker 8: I remember walking through with Rick Green. He said to me,
- 29:27Speaker 8: can you imagine if we ever won this thing? He had,
- 29:29Speaker 8: the people will go absolutely bomkers. Right, So, sure enough,
- 29:33Speaker 8: we get in the playoffs that next year, and you know,
- 29:37Speaker 8: we kind of had a shitty.
- 29:38Speaker 7: End of the season.
- 29:39Speaker 8: Things weren't good, and big search of OD came in
- 29:42Speaker 8: general manager with the president Ronald Corey, and they they
- 29:47Speaker 8: talked to us before the playoffs started, and I remember
- 29:50Speaker 8: mister Corey some of the things he said, motivating things.
- 29:54Speaker 8: He never played the game, but he certainly had some
- 29:56Speaker 8: motivating things to say.
- 29:58Speaker 7: And so didn't serve. So we we got going.
- 30:01Speaker 8: We beat Boston three games straight, and then we got
- 30:04Speaker 8: to Hotford and uh uh uh.
- 30:08Speaker 7: You know, God rest his soul clothes them.
- 30:10Speaker 8: You who I happened to be just with the other
- 30:14Speaker 8: night when he when he did his uh his torch
- 30:18Speaker 8: evening at the Bell Center. You know, everybody gives Patrick
- 30:24Speaker 8: was so much credit for that, and he deserved it.
- 30:27Speaker 8: He won the con Smike clod came in second.
- 30:31Speaker 7: But that year.
- 30:33Speaker 8: And I always say we we could have had Stevie
- 30:35Speaker 8: Wonder in that and we had such a good defensive team.
- 30:40Speaker 8: We won't We were the least goals against in the league.
- 30:42Speaker 8: We're big, yeah, and Patrick of rookie listen, he was unbelievable.
- 30:49Speaker 8: I'm not taking anything away from him. Maybe by that
- 30:51Speaker 8: previous statement I am a little bit.
- 30:53Speaker 5: But one like loth the.
- 30:57Speaker 8: Mewible ten goals is the rookie. You have five game winners,
- 31:02Speaker 8: two and over time and none. They then game seven
- 31:05Speaker 8: against Hotford, it was unbelievable. They scored with want less
- 31:09Speaker 8: than a minute left. Babbage scored on a slap shot
- 31:12Speaker 8: from the point. I was sitting there on the bench
- 31:15Speaker 8: and I see it just rising went right up into
- 31:17Speaker 8: the top corner on there, and the whole bench went.
- 31:22Speaker 8: You know, we had this thing. And then we're going
- 31:24Speaker 8: to the locker room and regroup. And Bob Gainey was
- 31:26Speaker 8: really good. Well some of the things he said, and
- 31:30Speaker 8: we got back out in the ice and lo and
- 31:32Speaker 8: behold the old pepster backhand up top over Leadud's shoulder,
- 31:38Speaker 8: and I just remember going crazy. And then it was
- 31:42Speaker 8: like after that, you know, the Rangers four to one,
- 31:45Speaker 8: we beat them, they you know, and then Calgary was
- 31:49Speaker 8: a big they were a tough team, and then we
- 31:51Speaker 8: beat them four games, so one it was incredible to
- 31:54Speaker 8: and then coming home and you know, we got to
- 31:56Speaker 8: the airport and it was crazy. We had to have
- 31:58Speaker 8: you know, police had to escort everybody. We had like
- 32:02Speaker 8: six corps around each guy. That the place was jammed.
- 32:07Speaker 8: And they originally were gonna get us on the bus
- 32:09Speaker 8: and we're gonna go out the back gate, but they
- 32:11Speaker 8: said we can't do that because if you do that,
- 32:13Speaker 8: they're going to destroy the airport. So they made us
- 32:17Speaker 8: march out through it, which was cool, but it was
- 32:20Speaker 8: like he couldn't move. And then it was off to
- 32:23Speaker 8: you know, City Hall that two days later, and the
- 32:26Speaker 8: parade was absolutely bunk as Saint Catherine Street the wrong.
- 32:31Speaker 8: It tooked like six and a half hours to go
- 32:34Speaker 8: from City Hall to the Forum, and then the forum
- 32:37Speaker 8: was full of people and they introduced each guy one
- 32:40Speaker 8: by one out in the state.
- 32:42Speaker 7: Was crazy.
- 32:43Speaker 8: It was absolutely it was what a memory forty years ago.
- 32:48Speaker 8: It's forty years ago. And in August, Yeah, in August,
- 32:52Speaker 8: Big Surge has his golf tournament every year and he
- 32:56Speaker 8: honors a different team every year, and he's gonna honor
- 32:58Speaker 8: us this year. His first Stanley Cup as a manager.
- 33:02Speaker 8: So it'd be good to see all those guys. Mine
- 33:05Speaker 8: was a few Tom Kervis who passed from cancer a
- 33:09Speaker 8: couple of years now, and then well recently Pep Lemieux.
- 33:14Speaker 7: It's just terrible, you know, terrible.
- 33:18Speaker 1: No question about it. I mean, obviously LEMI a terrific player.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Those memories are so vivid. I can tell for you.
- 33:23Speaker 1: You were connected for years Chris the infamous Boston gangster
- 33:26Speaker 1: Whitey Bulger. Then after he was arrested by the FBI
- 33:29Speaker 1: in twenty eleven, a nineteen eighty six Canadians cup ring,
- 33:32Speaker 1: which you're referring to, was found among his possessions. Did
- 33:34Speaker 1: the Feds come calling about that?
- 33:37Speaker 7: No, but people ask me about it. I listen.
- 33:40Speaker 8: I made Stanley cup ring for my mother in law,
- 33:43Speaker 8: my wife, my mother. I gave my father my Stanley
- 33:47Speaker 8: cup ring. Jim had that ring made for himself.
- 33:54Speaker 7: Yeah, so yeah, my connection there again, he was my.
- 34:00Speaker 8: Father in law, and yeah, I you know, he had
- 34:05Speaker 8: a different type of job.
- 34:07Speaker 7: You know.
- 34:09Speaker 8: You know a lot of people like how can you
- 34:11Speaker 8: talk to guys might following? What am I gonna do?
- 34:14Speaker 7: Right?
- 34:15Speaker 8: Yeah, you know he's around, and you know I got
- 34:19Speaker 8: along just fine with him. But I can certainly understand
- 34:22Speaker 8: when you're in that business. I certainly want I wouldn't
- 34:25Speaker 8: want to be against him.
- 34:26Speaker 1: He also reportedly came to Canada to watch the Bruins
- 34:29Speaker 1: from the Stailing Cup in Vancouver in twenty eleven.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Was he a bigger hockey fan that Vancouver? Apparently was
- 34:35Speaker 2: in Vancouver watching the Bruins won the Cup?
- 34:37Speaker 7: That's I doubt that he was. He was in you know,
- 34:44Speaker 7: if you follow it, he was in.
- 34:46Speaker 2: The big house.
- 34:47Speaker 7: No, what was twenty eleven? Yet twenty eleven he was
- 34:51Speaker 7: still on the run, wasn't he?
- 34:54Speaker 2: I guess reportedly he was on the run.
- 34:56Speaker 7: Yeah, people report a lot of shit, but point yeah, yeah,
- 35:04Speaker 7: he listen.
- 35:05Speaker 8: He used to come up and watch games, you know,
- 35:08Speaker 8: and he certainly he wanted to see my kids and
- 35:13Speaker 8: stuff and Karen, my ex wife, and yeah, so he
- 35:18Speaker 8: used to come up and go to games, and he
- 35:20Speaker 8: enjoyed it.
- 35:21Speaker 7: You know. I think he really enjoyed it because.
- 35:24Speaker 8: No one really knew who he was up there, you know,
- 35:27Speaker 8: and he could kind of, you know, maneuver around town
- 35:30Speaker 8: and just kind of not worry about, yeah, THEI being
- 35:35Speaker 8: up his ass.
- 35:36Speaker 6: Or yeah, someone shooting as the Yeah.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Do you have any idea Fuddy Bulger was a fan
- 35:43Speaker 1: of the movie that departed, the Great Scorsese movie.
- 35:45Speaker 7: I have no idea, and probably not though probably yeah,
- 35:49Speaker 7: probably not.
- 35:50Speaker 3: It was kind of Yeah, it was kind of hollywooded,
- 35:52Speaker 3: Hollywood eyed. Yeah, you'd say, right, Hollywood died knowing him.
- 35:57Speaker 7: Yeah, he didn't like any of that stuff.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Yeah, because they wanted to have you know, we mentioned
- 36:03Speaker 3: twenty eleven, but when you did that Last Gladiators Alex
- 36:06Speaker 3: Gibney's doc, it is tough at times to share about
- 36:13Speaker 3: struggles we have as athletes and things like that, but
- 36:15Speaker 3: also just talking and but I feel like it's something
- 36:18Speaker 3: that a lot of people need to hear, especially other athletes.
- 36:21Speaker 3: You know, what was the response for you after kind
- 36:23Speaker 3: of sharing a lot and how was that experience for you?
- 36:27Speaker 7: Yeah? That was, Yeah, it was cool, you know it
- 36:29Speaker 7: was kind of an extension of my I went to treatment.
- 36:35Speaker 8: And when I got out of treatment back then, someone
- 36:40Speaker 8: reached out to my daughter.
- 36:41Speaker 7: It was the producer, one of the producers.
- 36:44Speaker 8: Barie Reese, and he reached out to my daughter and
- 36:47Speaker 8: I called him and I ended up he ended up
- 36:51Speaker 8: kind of telling me what it was about.
- 36:52Speaker 7: Would you be willing to do it? I have really
- 36:54Speaker 7: nothing going.
- 36:55Speaker 8: Right at the time. I was trying to get back
- 36:58Speaker 8: on my feet, so I decided to do it. And
- 37:02Speaker 8: it was kind of extension know the therapy I had
- 37:05Speaker 8: been had gone through for the three months while I
- 37:09Speaker 8: was in there. It allowed me to kind of freed
- 37:12Speaker 8: me up to talk about some things that I normally
- 37:14Speaker 8: probably wouldn't have talked about.
- 37:16Speaker 7: And you know, it was a good stop for me
- 37:21Speaker 7: as far as on my road to recovery.
- 37:23Speaker 8: But you know, I've faulted in that about five four
- 37:30Speaker 8: years later. Uh, and then finally got back on the
- 37:35Speaker 8: horse and got going again. You know, I did a
- 37:38Speaker 8: thing in Montreal for I'm part of a mental health
- 37:41Speaker 8: foundation there called the laurens Any Mental Health Foundation, and
- 37:47Speaker 8: I did it.
- 37:50Speaker 7: Kind of.
- 37:52Speaker 8: Like a one man show, kind of like Tyson Mike
- 37:56Speaker 8: Tyson did but mine wasn't as comedic it was at times.
- 38:02Speaker 8: But I I talked about mental health. I talked about
- 38:07Speaker 8: growing up in Boston, how I grew up, my road
- 38:11Speaker 8: to the NHL, and then how I got addicted to
- 38:15Speaker 8: paying medication and how I turned my life around.
- 38:19Speaker 7: I did four of the five of those shows. I
- 38:22Speaker 7: did five.
- 38:23Speaker 8: It was two hours a night on stage, three hundred
- 38:27Speaker 8: people at night. It was a big corporate thing to
- 38:29Speaker 8: raise money, and we raised a ton of money. And yeah,
- 38:34Speaker 8: I was real. I was nervous as shit the first night. Like,
- 38:37Speaker 8: you know, it's funny. My my wife Jamie was saying,
- 38:40Speaker 8: I've never seen you like this. I know, because you know, like.
- 38:45Speaker 6: Going out there, it's a different muscle.
- 38:47Speaker 7: No, it's different, but different.
- 38:49Speaker 8: Honestly, I never felt that worried before a hockey game.
- 38:53Speaker 8: If I was in Philadelphia Boston. Of course, I was like,
- 38:57Speaker 8: I know, I'm fighting, I'm getting ready, but I was
- 39:00Speaker 8: actually scared shit.
- 39:03Speaker 7: And then when I get out there.
- 39:04Speaker 8: Uh, and I got going because I knew I know
- 39:07Speaker 8: my story and I know I can deliver it. But
- 39:12Speaker 8: once I got rolling, I felt pretty good about it.
- 39:14Speaker 8: I felt better, but each night it got a little
- 39:16Speaker 8: bit better. But I was nervous. It was a good
- 39:18Speaker 8: thing to be nervous before. But I got it all out.
- 39:22Speaker 8: So yeah, I'm used to doing it now I'm not.
- 39:26Speaker 8: I'm not ashamed of my life or what happened with me.
- 39:29Speaker 8: I got where I got. You know, when I was,
- 39:32Speaker 8: I was a willing participant, and at one point it
- 39:38Speaker 8: became I wasn't willing, but I had a difficult time
- 39:41Speaker 8: to get out of it.
- 39:43Speaker 3: It's part of the human experience. Yeah, at times.
- 39:48Speaker 4: I mean, before my next question, I gotta tell you
- 39:50Speaker 4: guys too, I mean, you Knox, were a huge part
- 39:53Speaker 4: of my recovery. I remember, I remember giving you a
- 39:57Speaker 4: call coming to Montreal and I was in a I
- 40:00Speaker 4: was in a bad spot, and you've been there kind
- 40:03Speaker 4: of every step of the way. So so I just
- 40:04Speaker 4: I got to say, you know how many guys you've helped. Uh,
- 40:07Speaker 4: It's it's been pretty remarkable and incredible. So you know,
- 40:12Speaker 4: it's it's it's heavy for me to talk about just
- 40:15Speaker 4: because of where I was, and then you talking about
- 40:17Speaker 4: it brings up a lot.
- 40:18Speaker 5: But you know, I want I want to talk.
- 40:21Speaker 4: About you know, Claude Lemieux and you know everyone knows
- 40:24Speaker 4: him as you know, this agitator and they remember him
- 40:27Speaker 4: as that player. What was he like in the locker
- 40:30Speaker 4: room and what kind of impact did he have on you?
- 40:32Speaker 8: Well, listen, Uh, he pissed me off, like a lot
- 40:37Speaker 8: of teammates.
- 40:39Speaker 7: And I love Clode, you know, he impressed the ship
- 40:43Speaker 7: out of me.
- 40:44Speaker 8: And I say that because like all guys, when you
- 40:49Speaker 8: come into the game, there's a certain immaturity level. Yeah, right,
- 40:54Speaker 8: you come in you've got to learn your way. You're
- 40:56Speaker 8: a young kid. These old the guys have been there done.
- 41:00Speaker 8: I got the T shirt, but you have that immature
- 41:04Speaker 8: way about you.
- 41:05Speaker 7: I know I did, and I know Pep did.
- 41:07Speaker 8: And and you know he's a kid who you know,
- 41:10Speaker 8: French kid, French speaking, picking up the language English, and
- 41:15Speaker 8: on the ice he would say some things to other
- 41:18Speaker 8: guys on other teams and do some things that were like, oh,
- 41:21Speaker 8: you know, it's just really it was maddening. You know,
- 41:26Speaker 8: he'd piss off the other team, but he pissed offs
- 41:28Speaker 8: off too. And then Pep, you know, after having that
- 41:32Speaker 8: playoff series and then watching him grow, you know, he
- 41:37Speaker 8: I still think this time.
- 41:39Speaker 7: In Montreal is you know, it took him a while mature.
- 41:42Speaker 8: And then he went off to the States the Devils
- 41:46Speaker 8: and and we know what he did, you know, the.
- 41:49Speaker 7: Forth Stanley Cup.
- 41:50Speaker 8: When I had talked to Claude later and I coached
- 41:53Speaker 8: him when I was in Jersey for a year and
- 41:55Speaker 8: Cloe was good to me.
- 41:56Speaker 7: You know.
- 41:57Speaker 8: I I struggled there a little bit as an assistant coach,
- 42:02Speaker 8: you know, I was handling a d and I had
- 42:05Speaker 8: some guys that just didn't want to fucking didn't like,
- 42:08Speaker 8: like Scottie Stevens fucking hated me, you know. And and Larry,
- 42:13Speaker 8: big Larry Robinson told me who I was gonna have
- 42:16Speaker 8: because he was there before he was leaving. But he
- 42:19Speaker 8: told me who I would have problems with, and I did.
- 42:23Speaker 1: But anyway, but wait, why did Scott Stevens hate you?
- 42:26Speaker 8: Well, we fought and you know the stupid ship, you know,
- 42:30Speaker 8: it's stuff on the ice. But Scotty like you can't
- 42:33Speaker 8: tell him anything. He knew everything, you know. And you know, uh,
- 42:38Speaker 8: if you didn't put him on the fucking first pop play,
- 42:41Speaker 8: fucking piss him on. But Lea May I La May.
- 42:44Speaker 8: I used to tell me I want him against the
- 42:48Speaker 8: top line. And he never goes first on the pop play,
- 42:53Speaker 8: only second near the end, you know, and then.
- 42:59Speaker 6: You gotta be you gotta be the one to tell
- 43:01Speaker 6: him that.
- 43:02Speaker 8: He fucking always stare at me and then Dan or
- 43:04Speaker 8: if I had to, you know, they looked at me like,
- 43:07Speaker 8: I'm I'm like the worst guy in the world, and
- 43:10Speaker 8: I get it.
- 43:11Speaker 7: Listen, here's the deal.
- 43:13Speaker 8: And I'll I fuck I tell the truth.
- 43:18Speaker 7: I don't give a fuck.
- 43:19Speaker 8: I am not a fucking assistant coach.
- 43:23Speaker 7: I never had.
- 43:24Speaker 8: And Jock brought me in because he knew I knew
- 43:27Speaker 8: his system and he he he knew I could get
- 43:32Speaker 8: it across the players. I knew how defenseman should play
- 43:35Speaker 8: in that system. I know how they should play down low,
- 43:38Speaker 8: how to kill penalties. I knew everything about jock system.
- 43:41Speaker 8: He really but I just wasn't a fucking as I'm
- 43:46Speaker 8: not a fanny patter. So the players thought they had
- 43:49Speaker 8: two head coaches, you know, they felt like they had to, which.
- 43:53Speaker 7: I get totally. So that's on me.
- 43:56Speaker 8: That's on me, and I kind of felt bad for Jock.
- 44:00Speaker 8: But Jock was cool. I love that guy. I got
- 44:04Speaker 8: a off track.
- 44:04Speaker 6: What was that your favorite?
- 44:09Speaker 8: Pet so Pete to go on and win those Stanley Cups,
- 44:14Speaker 8: and I mean anyway, and and talk to him.
- 44:17Speaker 7: Years later, I saw him speak at an event.
- 44:22Speaker 8: And I was blown away how the command he had
- 44:27Speaker 8: the English language, and how articulate he had become and worldly.
- 44:34Speaker 8: You know, he grew up in this little po dunk
- 44:36Speaker 8: town up in Quebec, and and then he got exposed
- 44:40Speaker 8: all that south of the border, and boy he took
- 44:42Speaker 8: advantage of it. And he really I freaking I came
- 44:46Speaker 8: to really, And not that I didn't love him as
- 44:48Speaker 8: a teammate. I did, but you know, he had whats
- 44:52Speaker 8: you know, like we all do it. You know, we
- 44:54Speaker 8: have things guys don't like about us. I don't care
- 44:56Speaker 8: what you say. We're a close team. And and Pep
- 45:00Speaker 8: really man, he really he came into his own and
- 45:07Speaker 8: certainly people really loved being around them. You know, he
- 45:12Speaker 8: had a good sense of humor with a good guy.
- 45:15Speaker 8: It's just terrible, you know. I was with him the
- 45:18Speaker 8: night of the torch and he asked me, said, I
- 45:20Speaker 8: was with his two sons, Chris and Mike, and they're
- 45:24Speaker 8: breaking huge.
- 45:25Speaker 7: Are like six' three sixty, four the two of.
- 45:27Speaker 8: Them AND i was telling how much the father meant
- 45:31Speaker 8: to me because OF i, said see this, RING i
- 45:34Speaker 8: have on my fingers thanks to your. FATHER i told the.
- 45:38Speaker 8: Story everybody, Said, Patrick, Patrick, patrick but your father Had
- 45:42Speaker 8: we never win A cup if he doesn't swore that
- 45:45Speaker 8: goal In game. Seven AND i was building them up
- 45:48Speaker 8: to his, kids and, fuck he looked. Shop he's dressed,
- 45:52Speaker 8: well he big. Smile you could never ever tell something
- 45:58Speaker 8: was going on with. HIM i JUST i was blown
- 46:00Speaker 8: away WHEN i found. Out but then he said to, me,
- 46:03Speaker 8: Nuts he, said how is. It he seemed a little
- 46:05Speaker 8: nervous about. GOING i, said just make sure you walk.
- 46:07Speaker 8: Slow they told me to walk. SLOW i, SAID i
- 46:09Speaker 8: went too. FAST i, SAID i went faster THAN i can.
- 46:12Speaker 8: Skate for price, SAKE i would. LIKE i couldn't wait
- 46:15Speaker 8: to get out, there and and HE i think it
- 46:19Speaker 8: was a little nervous about being back at the fan.
- 46:21Speaker 8: Base and then, YEAH i, Said, pep you're gonna walk out.
- 46:25Speaker 8: There they're going to see your name and, number and
- 46:27Speaker 8: they're going to see, you and that roof is going
- 46:29Speaker 8: to come out the.
- 46:30Speaker 7: Place and it. Did and then you, know two.
- 46:33Speaker 8: Days, Later i'm In toronto at an event speaking and
- 46:38Speaker 8: about twenty minutes BEFORE i went, on someone texted me and,
- 46:43Speaker 8: said so sorry to hear WHY i didn't knew nothing about.
- 46:46Speaker 8: IT i was just freaking blew me, away blew me,
- 46:50Speaker 8: away so, sad suffering in, silence, Right and you know
- 46:54Speaker 8: when we talk about mental, health you, know and, advocacy

- 47:36Speaker 8: Two it does take, Courage it takes strength to ask
- 47:41Speaker 8: somebody for, help and especially with someone who who's used,
