- 1:13Speaker 3: Brandon Vick. Brandon, how you doing today, my man.
- 1:15Speaker 2: It's been a long time, it.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Had well, technically it's only been a month.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20Speaker 3: We did an episode in January.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's true. That's true.
- 1:24Speaker 3: No, it's uh, but we recorded that in November.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Correct.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Now we're here at the end of January recording February's
- 1:31Speaker 3: episode of the Vick Flicks podcast, having been on practice
- 1:35Speaker 3: for like two months, which is really weird for us.
- 1:39Speaker 3: We've never done that before. Do you realize that, like
- 1:42Speaker 3: our holidays? Yeah, it used to be like two weeks, yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 3: right at Christmas to New Year's Yeah, I.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Would say we only actually did kind of when most
- 1:51Speaker 2: people take off, yeah, from their job. But yeah, it
- 1:55Speaker 2: was it was nice, and I don't know if it
- 1:57Speaker 2: was we started planning it obviously towards the end of
- 2:00Speaker 2: the year, but now we were talking like that's I
- 2:03Speaker 2: think that's kind of how we should do it from
- 2:05Speaker 2: here on out because it's it is nice because November
- 2:08Speaker 2: December and ship's tactic. Anyway.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Yeah, so we've we've technically this is the first episode
- 2:14Speaker 3: we've recorded since the week before Thanksgiving, so it's been.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Well, we have if we can pull back the curtain
- 2:23Speaker 2: a little bit, we've had conversations because honestly, I don't
- 2:27Speaker 2: even remember where we left off and what we even
- 2:29Speaker 2: did and where are we at this stage.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I don't remember how to do the intro, right.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I remember us bringing up this topic that we're going
- 2:38Speaker 2: to do today.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Yeah, but I was like, oh, yeah, that's right.
- 2:42Speaker 3: And then well, this was originally going to be a
- 2:44Speaker 3: Doctor Seuss podcast for February.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Yes, but has November yep.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So hey, maybe we can go ahead and record November's
- 2:53Speaker 3: episode next.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Why I really think that cat And by the way,
- 2:57Speaker 2: this is not about kat in the Hat, but that
- 3:00Speaker 2: might be my son's first movie. We might give it
- 3:02Speaker 2: a real shot in November.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Oh man, I think it looks awesome.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I think it's just right. Yeah, he'll be almost.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Four The Grinch too, so.
- 3:11Speaker 2: You mighty Benedict Cumberbatch. Oh buddy, he does. But I
- 3:17Speaker 2: will tell you he is gung ho on spider Man,
- 3:21Speaker 2: those Spidery Friends, whatever's on Disney Plus. Yeah, you want
- 3:25Speaker 2: to talk about spider Man, Ghost, Spidery, spin doc Oc, Rhino, Sandman, Electro.
- 3:31Speaker 3: He's got it, man, he's got to get into that age.
- 3:35Speaker 2: It's crazy. And let me tell you when sometimes when
- 3:38Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, what do you want for breakfast? I
- 3:39Speaker 2: just hear and he just has well.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw him over the weekend and that was
- 3:44Speaker 3: like the first thing he did to Yeah, he webbed me.
- 3:46Speaker 2: And let me tell you something pal, I fucking sell it.
- 3:49Speaker 3: I was about to say, you gotta sell it?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Yeah, like, oh god, what is that?
- 3:53Speaker 3: If a kid hits you with the Spider Man web slinging,
- 3:56Speaker 3: you gotta sell it.
- 3:57Speaker 2: But I expect him to sell when I do that
- 4:00Speaker 2: Kertz spin a rooney and do that scissor kit. He's
- 4:03Speaker 2: got to sell.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Sell that too. Well. We are here, by the way.
- 4:08Speaker 3: I also do want to mention that we do have
- 4:10Speaker 3: our Nashville Movie Dispatch movie annual covering the year in
- 4:15Speaker 3: film for twenty twenty five, available on Amazon. If you
- 4:19Speaker 3: just search Brandon's name, if you search my name, if
- 4:21Speaker 3: you search Nashville Movie Dispatch, it'll come up fifteen bucks
- 4:25Speaker 3: for gosh, over two hundred pages of movie reviews, movie rankings, features.
- 4:30Speaker 3: It's all kinds of stuff. There's a lot in that I.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Was reading over the holidays, just to kind of see
- 4:37Speaker 2: what like your top tien were you.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Were you surprised to see movie reviews pop up that
- 4:42Speaker 3: weren't even on Nashville Movie Dispatch throughout the year. Yes, yeah,
- 4:46Speaker 3: there were a few of those in the yeah that
- 4:47Speaker 3: I wrote, and it was just like, I'm not gonna
- 4:50Speaker 3: put it on the shade. Always you got to buy
- 4:51Speaker 3: the book for.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I always flip through and think he wrote that too,
- 4:57Speaker 2: and then your dedication to my letter box.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a weekly process.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Well I never yeah, well some stuff is like a sentence.
- 5:07Speaker 2: But still it's good for you to have to research that.
- 5:12Speaker 2: But yeah, I and I always like to see Brett's
- 5:15Speaker 2: top yeah, top films and stuff because that's something that
- 5:18Speaker 2: like we kind of sort of don't talk about, and
- 5:20Speaker 2: then we do, but it's already been published and so
- 5:24Speaker 2: we look through that.
- 5:25Speaker 3: But yeah, it's uh, I need to get Brett a
- 5:27Speaker 3: book now that I'm thinking about it. I just ordered
- 5:29Speaker 3: some new copies, so I have to mail him one
- 5:33Speaker 3: make sure that he gets it. I forgot to do that.
- 5:35Speaker 2: But yeah, we're pages.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Yeah, so it is. It's fifteen bucks. It's up on Amazon.
- 5:41Speaker 3: We still have the twenty twenty four movie Annual up
- 5:44Speaker 3: there available for sale as well.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Yeah. I think you need them all.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Yeah, you need them all.
- 5:50Speaker 2: It just doesn't make sense if you just have one.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Just go to Amazon search Nashville Movie Dispatch. The book
- 5:55Speaker 3: will pop up. We are here to talk about Gore
- 5:59Speaker 3: Verbinski because.
- 6:02Speaker 2: His name is a yeah, what a name.
- 6:07Speaker 3: His name is attached to some of the biggest movies
- 6:09Speaker 3: of the last twenty or so years that I don't think.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I don't think yeah, I don't think they He has
- 6:17Speaker 3: done some pretty good ship, he has done some pretty
- 6:20Speaker 3: popular ship, but you never hear him heralded in the
- 6:25Speaker 3: same conversation as some of the more revered directors filmmakers,
- 6:30Speaker 3: which you know, I don't know. Let's let's just start there.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Let's just get right in the reason we're talking about him.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Good luck, have fun, don't die. His newest effort is
- 6:40Speaker 3: is it out already? I'm trying to think of when
- 6:41Speaker 3: this is going to be released. It's coming out this weekend, Friday,
- 6:45Speaker 3: this Friday. Yeah, So we thought it'd be a good,
- 6:49Speaker 3: good opportunity to kind of look back through his filmography.
- 6:53Speaker 3: You've actually seen the film, so you'll provide a review
- 6:56Speaker 3: at the end of the episode today. But let's just
- 6:59Speaker 3: start with like, why is it do you think that
- 7:03Speaker 3: like he is not a more heralded filmmaker and in
- 7:06Speaker 3: the film community, film Twitter if you will, or letterbox, I.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Mean, honestly, I don't know. No, I think when we
- 7:13Speaker 2: kind of go like, he hasn't done an abundance of
- 7:18Speaker 2: movie you know he was, he was a music vide.
- 7:21Speaker 3: My best guess is like, yeah, like his good stuff
- 7:24Speaker 3: is spread out for so long that when something like
- 7:28Speaker 3: this does pop up, you're like, oh, yeah, oh no,
- 7:32Speaker 3: broke my knuckle on the table over here.
- 7:35Speaker 2: No your metal pinky fell off, or uh we're.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Out of practice. Uh oh what you doing, baby girl?
- 7:40Speaker 3: You can come in here. It's okay, it's just.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Uncle braindon my audience.
- 7:44Speaker 3: My kitten is trying to come into the studio and
- 7:48Speaker 3: she's typically afraid of people, but she sees this in
- 7:51Speaker 3: here and she wants to participate. So anyway after breaking
- 7:55Speaker 3: breaking my knuckle, is it just because like for his
- 7:59Speaker 3: stuff that is like truly great, not just a release
- 8:03Speaker 3: every couple of years, but the stuff that's really great,
- 8:06Speaker 3: there's so much time in between releases that by the
- 8:09Speaker 3: time something new comes out, you're like, oh, yeah, gor Verbinski,
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yeah he's done.
- 8:14Speaker 2: I yes, But I also feel like even though that,
- 8:17Speaker 2: I mean again, hell of a name, I don't think
- 8:21Speaker 2: people associate him with some of these blockbusters that he's done.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I mean, he's won in Oscar.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah, but which if you would have given me five
- 8:32Speaker 3: guesses as to which of his films one in Oscar,
- 8:35Speaker 3: I would not have guessed.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I did specifically remember the Oscar Hue. Yeah, I like
- 8:43Speaker 2: honed in because it was the peak Johnny Depp, right,
- 8:48Speaker 2: like you know, and I remember and also that film
- 8:51Speaker 2: was great, like I really do like it.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Ringo for those for those wondering, and.
- 8:55Speaker 2: The animation everything was so so well done.
- 8:58Speaker 3: But I saw that one, but I know it was.
- 9:01Speaker 3: It was well regarded.
- 9:02Speaker 2: It was, yeah, and it is good.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Maybe a future episode of movie review rewind.
- 9:05Speaker 2: You should you should. And I even rewatched a movie
- 9:09Speaker 2: for this specific episode because I've not seen it in
- 9:12Speaker 2: years and years.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Okay, we'll get to it.
- 9:15Speaker 2: But I don't know. I think he's kind of one
- 9:18Speaker 2: of those I don't know if I have a good
- 9:21Speaker 2: example of kind of one of those directors. It's always
- 9:23Speaker 2: been directing and you love the movies they do, but
- 9:27Speaker 2: you never know who's behind, Like you don't know, oh
- 9:30Speaker 2: he is, Oh he's the one who did it.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yeah. Does he have a signature style because some people
- 9:37Speaker 3: you watch and you're like, oh, I get it. These
- 9:40Speaker 3: kind of vibe together and I think you look at Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 3: I think that's part of it too, is that you
- 9:45Speaker 3: look at some of his projects and while they're good films,
- 9:49Speaker 3: it's almost like, you know, I don't I don't want
- 9:52Speaker 3: to say, oh, anybody could have done it, but I
- 9:54Speaker 3: don't think you watch it and you're like, that's a
- 9:55Speaker 3: Gore Vibinski film.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I think if there's one thing he kind of know
- 10:00Speaker 2: how to handle kind of the big budget yeah stuff
- 10:04Speaker 2: and to make something out of it. But as we
- 10:06Speaker 2: go through, what I think I found most fascinating is
- 10:10Speaker 2: that there is not one genre he hasn't thrown himself into.
- 10:16Speaker 2: It's not like he's just kind of done these and
- 10:19Speaker 2: then he changed this, and then what he ended up
- 10:21Speaker 2: winning an Oscar for he had I don't I think
- 10:24Speaker 2: that was his only animated movie. So I applaud him
- 10:30Speaker 2: in the fact that there is no genre that he
- 10:32Speaker 2: is scared to kind of just dive into and whatever
- 10:37Speaker 2: the story may be and how to you know, how
- 10:40Speaker 2: to present it.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Well, let's just jump right into his filmography. Then we'll
- 10:43Speaker 3: go to nineteen ninety seven.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Let's start with that he really loves bad Religion.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 2: When I was looking, he did quite a few music
- 10:53Speaker 2: videos for Poe Religion.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I that's I'm off his page now, but there's
- 11:00Speaker 3: account of music videos that.
- 11:01Speaker 2: He here's a bunch.
- 11:02Speaker 3: It's but you know, it's impressive.
- 11:04Speaker 2: But I think I remember at a time that was
- 11:07Speaker 2: kind of the thing. Yeah, music video directors ended up
- 11:10Speaker 2: making that jump to film. And do you remember MTV's
- 11:12Speaker 2: making the video. Yes, a lot of them would go
- 11:15Speaker 2: on like f Gary Gray, like a lot of them
- 11:17Speaker 2: would make that jump because they did like the most
- 11:20Speaker 2: popular people's videos that would you know, rack up all
- 11:25Speaker 2: these MTV music awards and shit. And I think, I
- 11:28Speaker 2: mean Gore was kind of there in the in the
- 11:33Speaker 2: early mid nineties when he was there.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Let's go to his first full length feature, Yes, mouse
- 11:40Speaker 3: Hunts from Yees nineteen ninety seven. This Nathan Lane, Lee Evans,
- 11:45Speaker 3: Christopher Walking. The film follows two brothers in their struggle
- 11:48Speaker 3: against one small but crafty house mouse for possession of
- 11:51Speaker 3: a mansion which was willed to them by their father.
- 11:54Speaker 3: I never saw this one. It's his only it's his
- 11:58Speaker 3: only credit feature credit in the nineties. Did you see
- 12:04Speaker 3: mouse Hunt?
- 12:05Speaker 2: I have, I did not. I haven't seen it in
- 12:10Speaker 2: a very long time, but I remember it being like
- 12:13Speaker 2: a fun, cute Disney type movie where it was kind
- 12:17Speaker 2: of like all this high jeens and absurdity, and because
- 12:22Speaker 2: the mouse was doing this and this, and they were,
- 12:24Speaker 2: you know, kind of these greedy brothers that were trying
- 12:26Speaker 2: to sell this house. But it was fun it for
- 12:32Speaker 2: what it was. But I also it brings us mout
- 12:37Speaker 2: in my face because as we go along, I love
- 12:39Speaker 2: that this was his first movie.
- 12:41Speaker 3: It's the first one. Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:43Speaker 3: So then we get into the two thousands, and as
- 12:46Speaker 3: a director, this is quite a run. Quite a run.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Two thousand and one you had The Mexican. I'm just
- 12:53Speaker 3: realizing now that there's like some directors were like, oh,
- 12:56Speaker 3: this year he did this, this, and that next year
- 12:59Speaker 3: he did that another. This is just one movie a year.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Two thousand and one, two three, The Mexican, The Ring,
- 13:07Speaker 3: Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Like that's a and then you factor in two thousand
- 13:13Speaker 3: and five. He takes a year off in four. Yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 3: comes back in five with the weather Man. I mean,
- 13:20Speaker 3: I haven't watched The Mexican in a while. Yeah. We
- 13:24Speaker 3: recently did an episode of drinking with on the Ring,
- 13:27Speaker 3: and I do watch the Curse of the Black Pearl,
- 13:30Speaker 3: like every summer I think it's a good summer summertime movie.
- 13:34Speaker 3: The Weatherman a classic like that is a four movie
- 13:38Speaker 3: run that you could stack up with, like.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Oh, just based on pure entertainment value.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Yeah, which I think is probably to go back to
- 13:48Speaker 3: our conversation from earlier, if I were to put a
- 13:51Speaker 3: stamp on gor Verbinski's brand, that it would be entertaining.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I So The Mexican is the one
- 13:58Speaker 2: that I rewatched before this.
- 14:01Speaker 3: How does it hold up all these years.
- 14:03Speaker 2: It's not a great movie. Okay, it is peek Brad Pitt,
- 14:09Speaker 2: Julia Roberts star power. The movie is not that great.
- 14:13Speaker 2: It's a lot of hijinks on him being in Mexico
- 14:15Speaker 2: with his gun, and then the other side of it
- 14:18Speaker 2: is this girlfriend who they're not you know, they're she's
- 14:22Speaker 2: he's kind of lied to her, they're not on good terms.
- 14:25Speaker 2: And then there's a mistaken identity which brings in James Gandolfini.
- 14:29Speaker 2: I think the one thing I got out of this
- 14:31Speaker 2: is that James Gandalfini deserves a lot more credit.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I think for sure.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I think he's he is fantastic in this. I dare
- 14:37Speaker 2: say he's probably the best part about this but it,
- 14:41Speaker 2: but it kind of suits that early two thousand thing.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I'll be honest with you, when I think of either
- 14:50Speaker 2: Brad Pitt or Joia Roberts, I do not think of
- 14:53Speaker 2: this movie ever. But The Ring, Holy shit.
- 14:59Speaker 3: How do you go from mouse Hunt to the Mexican
- 15:02Speaker 3: to the Exactly and how do you parlay that into
- 15:05Speaker 3: getting the deal from Exactly?
- 15:08Speaker 2: I don't know, And that's what is. The way he's
- 15:11Speaker 2: able to pivot from one genre to the other is astounding.
- 15:16Speaker 2: But I The Ring is still one of the best
- 15:19Speaker 2: horror movies, and I don't think people realize what kind
- 15:23Speaker 2: of craze it started with this PG thirteen horror thing
- 15:30Speaker 2: and the Pirates of the Car. That first one can
- 15:32Speaker 2: never be beat. Yeah, it just can't be beat. We're
- 15:36Speaker 2: gonna talk about He does go on to do a
- 15:38Speaker 2: couple of others, but one of the best summer blockbusters
- 15:44Speaker 2: ever to be done. Johnny Depp as Captain Sparrow was
- 15:47Speaker 2: nominated for an Oscar. Yeah, that's how legit this whole
- 15:51Speaker 2: thing was. And then I don't think people really know
- 15:55Speaker 2: about The weather Man, but I'm gonna tell you it
- 15:58Speaker 2: is one of the best dry is when the last
- 16:01Speaker 2: time hilarious. I have not watched in a very long time,
- 16:04Speaker 2: but I recently got the Blu ray of it, and
- 16:06Speaker 2: I really want to do some episode about it.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Well, we got on the calendar.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I love like the milkshake thing. It's and Nicholas No, yeah,
- 16:18Speaker 2: Nicholas holds.
- 16:19Speaker 3: In that There's Somebody That's yeah right, yeah, we looked
- 16:23Speaker 3: it up recently.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Yeah. That and About a Boy Yeah in both yeah. Yeah,
- 16:27Speaker 2: So I I love that movie, even though it did
- 16:31Speaker 2: not get the credit it deserves.
- 16:33Speaker 3: So he wraps up the two thousand's with two Pirates movies,
- 16:38Speaker 3: Pirates of the Caribbean dead Man's Chest in two thousand
- 16:40Speaker 3: and six and Pirates of the Caribbean at World's End
- 16:43Speaker 3: two thousand and seven. How many Pirates movies have they made?
- 16:46Speaker 2: Oh?
- 16:46Speaker 3: Man, are they up to seven?
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah? So he did those.
- 16:51Speaker 3: He did the first three and then hopped off the bandwagon.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and then there was at World's End.
- 16:59Speaker 3: At World's End was seven. He did do that.
- 17:01Speaker 2: He did do that one, and what's dead Man's Chest?
- 17:04Speaker 3: That was the second one though.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Okay, so those and then there's a fourth one in there. Yeah,
- 17:11Speaker 2: there's a fourth Pirates that he did.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Not do I'm gonna have to look it up.
- 17:15Speaker 2: And I'm trying to think because Bill Nye was one
- 17:18Speaker 2: of the villains and Jeffrey Raw, Jeffrey Rush was phenomenally.
- 17:24Speaker 3: So much, so much.
- 17:26Speaker 2: And then there was talk because of.
- 17:28Speaker 3: On Stranger Tides in twenty eleven and then Dead Man
- 17:31Speaker 3: Tell Dead Men Tell Tales in twenty seventeen. Ye, I
- 17:35Speaker 3: never saw. I never saw the fourth or fifth one.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I mean, I would say, you're not missing much. The
- 17:43Speaker 2: Captain Sparrow character obviously does not doesn't excite or th
- 17:51Speaker 2: real like he like he used to. I do. And
- 17:55Speaker 2: then there was talk that they were gonna kind of
- 17:57Speaker 2: revamp it, but Margot Robbie was going to be the
- 18:00Speaker 2: Jack Sparrow like esque character because of all I could
- 18:05Speaker 2: Johnny Depp's troubles, But now that I don't think that's
- 18:08Speaker 2: happening anymore. And then the last time I read that
- 18:10Speaker 2: maybe he would be a part of Johnny Depp would
- 18:13Speaker 2: be a part of it because he's trying to make
- 18:14Speaker 2: a comeback now that him and his Amber Herd shit
- 18:16Speaker 2: has done. I'm not sure, but honestly, I don't know
- 18:19Speaker 2: what I mean. I don't know what you add to it.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Unless you just totally change it. But the thing is,
- 18:23Speaker 2: and it kind of is to the credit of Gore.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I mean, you can't beat Johnny Depp and Jeffrey Rush
- 18:32Speaker 2: and Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley. Like, I just don't
- 18:35Speaker 2: think you can beat that that set up.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's it.
- 18:41Speaker 2: And now you're talking about five six moos, you know,
- 18:43Speaker 2: talking about the seventh movie that doesn't I mean, that's
- 18:48Speaker 2: not gonna excite people the way that you're assumed.
- 18:50Speaker 3: You're talking about a lightning in a bottle sort of
- 18:54Speaker 3: situation with that first one, second one, okay, not as good,
- 18:59Speaker 3: third one probably not as good as that one. Like,
- 19:02Speaker 3: it's just a I mean, it happens to every franchise, right,
- 19:06Speaker 3: It's very rare that you can kind of keep that momentum.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Going when your peak is the first one. I don't
- 19:12Speaker 2: know if I recommend doing like seven of them.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, at that point it's just the IP
- 19:18Speaker 3: cash grabs, right, Yeah.
- 19:19Speaker 2: So and I see why Gore probably decided I'm not
- 19:22Speaker 2: gonna do it, but if they make money, I think
- 19:25Speaker 2: that's sort of what leads to his next film.
- 19:31Speaker 3: So, four years after the release of Pirates of the
- 19:36Speaker 3: Caribbean at World's End is Ringo, for which he wins
- 19:40Speaker 3: an Oscar the Best Animated Feature at the Oscars that year.
- 19:44Speaker 3: It is one of only a few of his movies
- 19:48Speaker 3: that I have not seen.
- 19:50Speaker 2: It's great, It really is good. What I recommend it?
- 19:54Speaker 3: What was it a So it wasn't a Pixar film?
- 20:00Speaker 3: Was there a Pixar film that it beat out that year?
- 20:03Speaker 3: Because I remember for a while, I don't know if
- 20:06Speaker 3: you know, off the top of your head, I remember
- 20:08Speaker 3: for a while like that award that category was basically
- 20:11Speaker 3: you might as well have named it the best Pixar
- 20:14Speaker 3: film of the year.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Yeah, let me see, hang on one sick.
- 20:22Speaker 3: I guess I could look it up too. We're just
- 20:25Speaker 3: sitting here stalling. It's a lizard cowboy.
- 20:29Speaker 2: It is a very it's a very funny.
- 20:33Speaker 3: And the voices which gor Verbinski actually was the voice
- 20:38Speaker 3: of Sergeant Turley whoever that is in Ringo.
- 20:42Speaker 2: So it won at the eighty fourth Academy Awards, breaking
- 20:48Speaker 2: a four year winning streak by Pixar.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Yeah, so it was.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it defeated A Cat in Paris, Chico and Rita
- 20:58Speaker 2: Puss in Boots in Kung Fu Panda two.
- 21:02Speaker 3: So that's not there's not a Pixar film even in that.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Nope.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:07Speaker 2: So it was the first non Pixar Disney film to
- 21:11Speaker 2: win the award since two thousand and six. It was
- 21:14Speaker 2: essentially by Paramount Pictures. It also won at the Baptist
- 21:22Speaker 2: and the Anti Awards, which is kind of the animated
- 21:25Speaker 2: oscars just praise for its offbeat, quirky tone, high quality animation.
- 21:33Speaker 3: So yeah, do you know what Pixar's release was in
- 21:36Speaker 3: twenty eleven, Um, it's Cars two.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Well that explains.
- 21:42Speaker 3: So there we go. We've gotten the bottom of that.
- 21:44Speaker 3: What was it about Ringo that you liked so much?
- 21:48Speaker 2: I mean, it is quirky, it is it. It is offbeat.
- 21:53Speaker 2: The animation is great, but I think it's a story
- 21:55Speaker 2: like it was. It's very much like an adult and
- 22:00Speaker 2: made a movie. Not that not that kids couldn't go
- 22:02Speaker 2: see it, but it kind of changed it up from
- 22:05Speaker 2: I think what we were kind of getting used to, yeah,
- 22:08Speaker 2: from Pixar dream work stuff like that, and so it
- 22:11Speaker 2: was it was very different. And you know, you know,
- 22:14Speaker 2: I mean, Johnny Depp has done like Corpse Bride for instance,
- 22:18Speaker 2: so as you know, he's not new to animation, but
- 22:21Speaker 2: it really works, and it really works with him, and
- 22:25Speaker 2: so it was it's it's funny, but it's not your
- 22:28Speaker 2: typical animated narrative story. You know, it's just not that case.
- 22:34Speaker 3: In twenty thirteen, he's he's back at it with with
- 22:37Speaker 3: Johnny Depp again for The Lone Ranger, which, man, it
- 22:42Speaker 3: had some potential and it just was was not not
- 22:46Speaker 3: very good.
- 22:47Speaker 2: No, that was one of the if not the biggest
- 22:50Speaker 2: flop of that year.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Had a budget of according to Wikipedia, two hundred and
- 22:55Speaker 3: twenty five to two hundred and fifty million dollars and
- 22:58Speaker 3: made two sixty So that is, you know, you're not
- 23:06Speaker 3: incredibly profitable there and didn't didn't really get good reviews either.
- 23:11Speaker 3: What do you think went wrong with The Lone Ranger.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Well, I think it's kind of where they're trying to
- 23:17Speaker 2: make Armie Hammer a movie star and they're still trying
- 23:24Speaker 2: to Johnny Depp is ride in this Pirate's Wave and
- 23:28Speaker 2: Ringo and he's still very much a a plus movie star. Yeah,
- 23:33Speaker 2: but I mean I kind of feel like I kind
- 23:35Speaker 2: of associate this When Will Smith thought Will wild West
- 23:38Speaker 2: was going to be a great idea, you can't deliver,
- 23:41Speaker 2: and the thing is Low Ranger is a very identifiable
- 23:46Speaker 2: property that people grew up with, sure, and trying to
- 23:49Speaker 2: update that and modernize it, you have to be careful.
- 23:53Speaker 2: And I think it was just a everything was just bloated,
- 23:59Speaker 2: like it was.
- 24:00Speaker 3: A very flat movie, as I recall, Yeah, it was
- 24:03Speaker 3: not just not having a lot of substance to.
- 24:07Speaker 2: It, right, And I yeah, I mean, you know, and
- 24:14Speaker 2: you kind of want that fun escapism And I'm not
- 24:16Speaker 2: saying it doesn't totally get it, and I didn't hate it,
- 24:19Speaker 2: but I do think it's one of those that's like
- 24:23Speaker 2: there is really nothing to it, and the fact that
- 24:28Speaker 2: you have put invested this much money to try and
- 24:30Speaker 2: make it, I feel like it was I feel like
- 24:33Speaker 2: it was maybe Gore's attempt to kind of start something
- 24:36Speaker 2: new off of the Pirates yea, you know, Glory, and
- 24:41Speaker 2: it didn't happen, and he was humbled very quickly.
- 24:45Speaker 3: He follows that up with twenty seventeen's psychological horror film
- 24:49Speaker 3: A Cure for Wellness Dane de Han Jason Isaac's Mia
- 24:53Speaker 3: goth In. That movie didn't perform that well at the
- 24:57Speaker 3: box office.
- 24:58Speaker 2: And it came out. This came out in February.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Really, yeah, I did. I see December is when it
- 25:06Speaker 3: hit Alamo Draft House. Oh wow, February seventeenth, twenty seventeen.
- 25:12Speaker 3: This is the other movie of his that I never saw.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I wanted to rewatch it, yeah, but I didn't get
- 25:17Speaker 2: a chance to. But I went back on the Sobros
- 25:20Speaker 2: Network and found that I gave it two and a
- 25:23Speaker 2: half out of five stars back then. And I say
- 25:27Speaker 2: that gor Verbinski can cox a slick psychological thriller, spreading
- 25:30Speaker 2: crazy suspicion and creepiness, and then the truth about the
- 25:34Speaker 2: cure sours the entire experience, wishing you never took a
- 25:37Speaker 2: sip of this twisted drink. It won't quench your thirst
- 25:40Speaker 2: for great mystery and suspense. And I sort of remember,
- 25:44Speaker 2: I really remember like the trailer of it, and it
- 25:47Speaker 2: did seem like it was going to be like, you know,
- 25:51Speaker 2: a night, like a psychological thriller. I mean, looking at
- 25:58Speaker 2: it now, I'm not sure what came before it, but
- 26:01Speaker 2: sort of like a Shutter Island kind of thing, like
- 26:04Speaker 2: as I think about it, even if Shorelan was after,
- 26:06Speaker 2: that's not the point, but it but yeah, it's one
- 26:10Speaker 2: of the because it's like a two and a half
- 26:11Speaker 2: hour movie. It's pretty long, but I it and and
- 26:18Speaker 2: I mean there's been so many movies before it, and
- 26:20Speaker 2: obviously I really remember so many movies after it where
- 26:25Speaker 2: once that mystery's out, there's nowhere to go.
- 26:28Speaker 3: It just it's like popping a balloon.
- 26:30Speaker 2: And I remember it being so consumed by atmosphere and
- 26:37Speaker 2: then nothing else, and I think Lone Ranger. And then
- 26:41Speaker 2: this movie made Gord walk away for a while, like
- 26:46Speaker 2: the coffin.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Yes, yes, well, I mean it's been I mean at
- 26:50Speaker 3: this point nine years. Yeah, yeah, that gets us to
- 26:56Speaker 3: good luck, have fun, don't die, which was the latest
- 26:59Speaker 3: moment where his name pops up and you're like, oh yeah,
- 27:02Speaker 3: gorgo and.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Like he's produced some stuff, but he hasn't produced anything
- 27:06Speaker 2: since twenty sixteen for a Cure for Wellness. He is
- 27:10Speaker 2: a producer for the Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Nothing
- 27:12Speaker 2: that that was, but yeah, and so I don't think
- 27:19Speaker 2: anything can really put into words that when we when
- 27:23Speaker 2: it was early two thousands and at the age we were,
- 27:26Speaker 2: when you can do something like The Ring and parts
- 27:30Speaker 2: of the Caribbean, you pretty much do whatever you want. Yeah,
- 27:35Speaker 2: those are huge money makers. And then Wether Man times. Yeah,
- 27:39Speaker 2: and I feel like The weather Man was and I
- 27:41Speaker 2: don't know this, but it does kind of feel like
- 27:43Speaker 2: and again, Nicholas Cage very much a superstar, which he'll
- 27:48Speaker 2: never not be a superstar, but I feel like he
- 27:52Speaker 2: made the money there and then he's decided, I'm going
- 27:56Speaker 2: to do something for me. Because Weatherman was not flashy.
- 27:58Speaker 2: It was not a big you know what I mean.
- 28:00Speaker 2: It wasn't a big release. I'm sure it didn't make
- 28:02Speaker 2: hardly any money. But he he could work within that
- 28:07Speaker 2: system until it bit him in the ass. And I
- 28:10Speaker 2: would say, when you go off from being an Oscar
- 28:13Speaker 2: winner and then you have flops like the Lone Ranger
- 28:15Speaker 2: and a Cure for Wellness, that's a big.
- 28:16Speaker 3: You're not prolific. So it's not like there's a blip
- 28:20Speaker 3: in the radar, not like it.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Says from gor Verbinski director like we see for some
- 28:25Speaker 2: of these those.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Are your only two films after the Oscar win, and
- 28:30Speaker 3: it's it kind of magnifies everything.
- 28:33Speaker 2: So it's almost like, oh, yeah, he he was a
- 28:36Speaker 2: Johnny Depp.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Yeah, so is gor Verbinski back with good Luck, Have Fun,
- 28:41Speaker 3: don't die.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I enjoy this movie. Okay, it is an absurdist comedy
- 28:48Speaker 2: of sorts. Absolutely, it has a lot to say about
- 28:54Speaker 2: AI has a lot to say about our our dependency
- 29:05Speaker 2: on technology. How so, how social media media influences our
- 29:12Speaker 2: every day thinking, our every you know doing. It's a
- 29:17Speaker 2: really sharp satire on that stuff. In case you don't know,
- 29:23Speaker 2: let me read this. This is from IMDb. A man
- 29:27Speaker 2: from the future arrives at a diner in la where
- 29:29Speaker 2: he must recruit the precise combination of disgruntled patrons to
- 29:34Speaker 2: join him on a one night quest to save the
- 29:36Speaker 2: world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence.
- 29:41Speaker 2: This has uh, Sam Rockwell as a Z beats Haley
- 29:46Speaker 2: Lou Richardson, Michael Penya, Juno Temple, Uh, great cast and
- 29:53Speaker 2: uh leading it to Sam Rockwell. His charm and charisma
- 29:58Speaker 2: is out on full force. I had read a thing
- 30:04Speaker 2: where I think it was something about Gore Verbinski and
- 30:08Speaker 2: kind of casting Sam Rockwill and he's quoted in the
- 30:10Speaker 2: saying basically, Sam Rockwell and the character he plays has
- 30:14Speaker 2: this fucket energy and it's very much required and highly
- 30:21Speaker 2: amusing when you see it on you know, on screen.
- 30:30Speaker 2: I will say, I think that as much as it
- 30:33Speaker 2: has to say about technology AI, you know, and just
- 30:39Speaker 2: kind of humanity in itself. A part of the story
- 30:43Speaker 2: kind of goes into kind of how did these people
- 30:45Speaker 2: get here? How did they get to the diner. I
- 30:48Speaker 2: think Michael Penya and Zazi Beats kind of get the
- 30:54Speaker 2: They kind of get the worst of the subplots. As
- 30:58Speaker 2: far as what brought them there, it's not as interesting.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I do think Haylu Lu Richardson Juno Temple get the best,
- 31:05Speaker 2: get the best out of it, and I think that's
- 31:08Speaker 2: where I think most of the kind of the emotion
- 31:11Speaker 2: comes from, because I think you can resonate with it
- 31:13Speaker 2: in some form or fashion as far and it's I
- 31:18Speaker 2: think even now, right now today is relatable even if
- 31:24Speaker 2: it hasn't happened to you. I don't think any of
- 31:26Speaker 2: this is too far fetched until we get towards the end,
- 31:31Speaker 2: when they start actually getting to the place that they
- 31:34Speaker 2: have to go to save the future, it gets a
- 31:39Speaker 2: little bit too off the rails. I feel like we
- 31:42Speaker 2: kind of do. We're kind of in over our head
- 31:44Speaker 2: on some stuff. I don't want to spoil anything because
- 31:47Speaker 2: again it is out on Friday, but there is some
- 31:50Speaker 2: some creative choices in there that I don't really sort
- 31:54Speaker 2: of takes away from that energy that in that momentum
- 31:57Speaker 2: that we're kind of that it's been working towards. Yeah,
- 32:00Speaker 2: for a solid you know, hour and forty five. Again,
- 32:03Speaker 2: this is if I'm not mistaken, it is a little
- 32:06Speaker 2: over two hours long. But I really and again I
- 32:12Speaker 2: think you know it when you see it. And some
- 32:14Speaker 2: of it is because it's a satire, it kind of
- 32:17Speaker 2: has allowed itself to be to kind of go a
- 32:21Speaker 2: little bit, kind of push the boundaries a bit. I
- 32:24Speaker 2: don't I wouldn't say it helps it, but I think
- 32:27Speaker 2: within that space it's not it's not as crazy. I
- 32:33Speaker 2: feel like we could have done something better or different.
- 32:36Speaker 2: But I really liked what it had to say, and
- 32:40Speaker 2: I really was quite fascinated in as far as this
- 32:45Speaker 2: way of kind of this time traveling. Like I said,
- 32:49Speaker 2: over the top of surtis comedy, but there's real heart
- 32:52Speaker 2: to it, and there is real significance to kind of
- 32:56Speaker 2: the world that we're living in right now. And and
- 33:00Speaker 2: I mean Sam Rockwell as our leader. Again, he's the
- 33:06Speaker 2: movie would not be as good without him. But it's
- 33:09Speaker 2: just that kind of attitude he brings that is I
- 33:14Speaker 2: mean it it fits perfectly. It really does. It's it's
- 33:19Speaker 2: it's I mean, no one should doubt Sam rockwell, but
- 33:23Speaker 2: even like from his get up to his delivery and
- 33:27Speaker 2: just kind of this attitude he has because this is
- 33:30Speaker 2: not his first attempt. I think it's he says, it's
- 33:33Speaker 2: like his one hundred and seventeenth time trying to do this.
- 33:36Speaker 2: It but and and it does add to a lot
- 33:38Speaker 2: of of of good humor, and so yeah, I enjoyed it.
- 33:45Speaker 2: It may not be for everyone, but I would my
- 33:48Speaker 2: vixfix rating is good be a three and a half
- 33:51Speaker 2: out of five. I feel like this is probably his
- 33:54Speaker 2: best since Raino.
- 33:55Speaker 3: I was about to say, it sounds like a bit
- 33:56Speaker 3: of a rebound, yes, his time away.
- 33:59Speaker 2: So yes, and I really like the last scene where
- 34:04Speaker 2: things are kind of figured out and it's not quite
- 34:07Speaker 2: what it's not the journey we thought we were on,
- 34:11Speaker 2: but it sort of reignites this one of Okay, now
- 34:16Speaker 2: I think we can do it. And so anyway, it's
- 34:19Speaker 2: well worth checking out. And I was pleasantly surprised and
- 34:26Speaker 2: very entertained by Gore's vision in this. And like I said,
- 34:32Speaker 2: the ensemble and stuff, it's really good.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Do you have a Gore Verbinsky, Mount Rushmore. Is it
- 34:39Speaker 3: as easy as The Ring Curse of the Black Pearl,
- 34:43Speaker 3: The weather Man and Ringo?
- 34:45Speaker 2: Uh?
- 34:46Speaker 3: Yes, it feels like there's a pretty clear cut divine Yeah.
- 34:50Speaker 2: But that's the beauty of Gore's filmography because if you
- 34:56Speaker 2: look at each of those films, they are totally different
- 35:00Speaker 2: in almost every way and almost every absolutely every every way.
- 35:06Speaker 2: And that's what when we first talked about doing this.
- 35:10Speaker 2: I really like that idea, because he has not felt
- 35:13Speaker 2: like he has been constraint in one genre, even when
- 35:20Speaker 2: the Pirates movies and Lone Ranger and stuff. I get.
- 35:23Speaker 2: But then okay, we'll do a cure for wellness, and
- 35:25Speaker 2: now we're and even this one, the good Luck, Have Fun,
- 35:29Speaker 2: Don't Die? Is that is like he's still kind of
- 35:34Speaker 2: doing it, Like I think that's obviously that's the kind
- 35:37Speaker 2: of filmmaker he is. I don't expect this to end
- 35:41Speaker 2: up making him, but I do. I do hope that
- 35:46Speaker 2: it kind of turns the page as far as kind
- 35:50Speaker 2: of these past however many years since Rango to appreciate
- 35:55Speaker 2: what he's been able to do. And I do think
- 35:58Speaker 2: that this film with a like I said, with a
- 36:02Speaker 2: very sensational Sam rockwell performance that this can get it
- 36:09Speaker 2: back on track and also make people take notice of
- 36:13Speaker 2: what he can do because he's done. If there's one
- 36:17Speaker 2: thing I hope people take away from this is that
- 36:18Speaker 2: he's done some really good shit.
- 36:20Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, that is a fitting place for us to
