- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Episode number eighty three.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Of NHL Unscripted perhaps one of our most unpredictable ones,
- 0:26Speaker 1: as an absolutely shocking surprise, the Colorada Avalanche President Trophy
- 0:31Speaker 1: winners doused and swept. Overall, we'll get in all of
- 0:34Speaker 1: that involved in the Colorda Avalanche plus Hot to Trot's.
- 0:38Speaker 1: We'll get into that in our special guest, Cal Clutterbuck,
- 0:40Speaker 1: one of the all time great names in hockey history.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Stories from Cal which will be awfully entertaining.
- 0:45Speaker 1: We'll get to the heart attack in just a second,
- 0:47Speaker 1: But Jason Demursen Nate Thompson along for the ride as always, JD,
- 0:50Speaker 1: You're on NHL tonight last night, so you were forced
- 0:52Speaker 1: to watch that game, whether or not you wanted to
- 0:54Speaker 1: or not. As night fever, how's that for a headline?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Mitch Marner and the Vegas Golden Knights are heading to
- 0:58Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup Final. If you're a leaf hater, this
- 1:01Speaker 1: is great news as Martyr is now in the Cup Final,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and perhaps the Habs are in there too. God, that
- 1:05Speaker 1: would be great just to cause so much Shadden freud
- 1:08Speaker 1: towards leaves fans. I saw you talking about the game
- 1:11Speaker 1: and broadcasting it and saying, you know, the key really
- 1:13Speaker 1: was the pot battles.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Vegas wanted it more, they fought for it more. I
- 1:16Speaker 2: know Colorado was banged up.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I get it, McCart missed the first two games, mckinna
- 1:20Speaker 1: hurt in game three. But this is a stunning result.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I know, the President Trophy winners they lose. This happens
- 1:25Speaker 1: because it's a long no Ultimately, Vegas sweep shocking to me.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's it's hard to wrap my head around
- 1:33Speaker 3: it other than it's just more so. I keep drawing
- 1:36Speaker 3: comparisons to the twozenty twelve La Kings, where they kind
- 1:41Speaker 3: of came in, limped into the platte and limp into
- 1:43Speaker 3: the playoffs. They won their last like eight or nine.
- 1:45Speaker 3: I remember talking to Brad Richardson about it, and they
- 1:48Speaker 3: just rolled through the playoffs and everybody was like, who
- 1:51Speaker 3: the fuck is this team. They made a coaching change too,
- 1:54Speaker 3: Darryl Sutter came in, and you know, they've just owned
- 1:58Speaker 3: the middle of the ice number one. But you look
- 2:00Speaker 3: last night, they're just wave after wave.
- 2:02Speaker 4: They lean on you.
- 2:03Speaker 3: They're heavy and honestly they got a goaltender that peaked
- 2:08Speaker 3: at the right time.
- 2:09Speaker 4: You know, Carter Harten. Round one was just okay, but he's.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Gotten better and better, and he is like he is
- 2:14Speaker 3: painting his Picasso right now out there on the ice,
- 2:17Speaker 3: because you know, say what you want, but he's playing
- 2:21Speaker 3: one hell of a playoffs and Torts is pushing all
- 2:25Speaker 3: the right buttons. They've also gotten some luck with injuries,
- 2:28Speaker 3: and you know, versus the Colorado Avalanche that have not
- 2:32Speaker 3: had that same luck. But I just it's if I'm Colorado,
- 2:37Speaker 3: I'm kind of today, probably sitting with the guys having
- 2:41Speaker 3: drinks or something, and you're just like, what the what happened?
- 2:44Speaker 3: What happened in that series? We just couldn't get any
- 2:47Speaker 3: goal scoring from our secondary guys, get bad injuries, give
- 2:51Speaker 3: up one bad goal of game, and see it frickin later.
- 2:55Speaker 3: The Kings are dead. Long live the Kings, Long live
- 2:59Speaker 3: the Knights.
- 3:00Speaker 1: It's well said, and again the Torrella storyline is irresistible.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Nate nineteen four to one under Torts.
- 3:05Speaker 1: But you guys know, I mean, I respect the coach,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and I'm sure Torts has done a good job and
- 3:09Speaker 1: Cassidy probably wore these guys down, but all through the
- 3:11Speaker 1: players step up. So I'm with JD given props and
- 3:14Speaker 1: Mitch Marna and Carter Hart and the fact that against
- 3:16Speaker 1: the Avs he allowed only seven goals one hundred and
- 3:18Speaker 1: twenty five shots nine to forty four to st eight percentage.
- 3:20Speaker 1: You know him from the time of the Flyers, Nate.
- 3:22Speaker 1: But the more interesting aspect is indeed Colorado. I mean,
- 3:24Speaker 1: they have the best record in the league all season.
- 3:26Speaker 1: You get cadri walk cool like the deadline, you sweep LA,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you beat Minnesota in five, you look ready to go
- 3:31Speaker 1: against Vegas, and Nate just goes down returns in Game four.
- 3:34Speaker 2: You know, I get it. Chooskin banged up as well.
- 3:37Speaker 1: But once again the twenty twelve, twenty thirteen Blackhawks the
- 3:39Speaker 1: last President's Trophy winner to hoist the Stanley Cup. For Colorado,
- 3:43Speaker 1: it's a colossal disappointment. And where do you go from here?
- 3:46Speaker 1: I think always would agree Bednar is a good coach,
- 3:49Speaker 1: but this is like an incredibly disappointing result for them.
- 3:52Speaker 5: It is. It's it's shocking.
- 3:55Speaker 6: You know, we've expected to wake up today and probably
- 3:58Speaker 6: say Colorado swept the Vegas Golden Knights. If we were
- 4:01Speaker 6: going to initially guess that and now we're in this
- 4:03Speaker 6: position and took JD's credit. Like the defensive masterpiece that
- 4:09Speaker 6: Vegas has put on throughout this playoffs and especially against Colorado,
- 4:13Speaker 6: like they I think they had one shot over like
- 4:14Speaker 6: twenty five minutes in game four, and you're seeing how
- 4:19Speaker 6: good they are defensively, and I think for Colorado it's,
- 4:23Speaker 6: you know, it's literally what could.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Have gone wrong went wrong for them.
- 4:27Speaker 6: You know, I think Minnesota got a chunk out of
- 4:29Speaker 6: them a little bit, you could say, with yeah, mccar
- 4:32Speaker 6: getting hurt and some guys being banged up, and you're
- 4:35Speaker 6: just kind of seeing, I guess how important cale mccarr
- 4:38Speaker 6: was to color Avalanche because it was it happens quick,
- 4:42Speaker 6: it does unfortunately in these series sometimes where you go
- 4:45Speaker 6: down on one or two games and all of a sudden,
- 4:47Speaker 6: the series is over, and you know, you look at
- 4:49Speaker 6: it after game one, it was that was kind of it.
- 4:52Speaker 6: You know, they had this momentum Vegas has had in
- 4:55Speaker 6: this buzz saw that they've ran into, and I think
- 4:58Speaker 6: for Colorado moving forward, I mean, you have a bunch
- 5:00Speaker 6: of guys at the Calee mccar's twenty twenty eight sorry,
- 5:06Speaker 6: you know, McKinnon's thirty. I mean, these guys are getting
- 5:08Speaker 6: a little bit older, but they still have their core
- 5:10Speaker 6: group of guys. I don't know how much you can
- 5:11Speaker 6: really change because of how successful they were this year.
- 5:14Speaker 6: You still have your nucleus of players and guys that
- 5:17Speaker 6: you move, that you moved to get traded for, so
- 5:20Speaker 6: you know it is. It's a huge disappointment for calling
- 5:24Speaker 6: out knowing that it was cup or bust, But for Vegas, man, Vegas,
- 5:29Speaker 6: baby Vegas.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I think, I mean, I think that aging corps a
- 5:33Speaker 3: little bit with Landeskog and Kadre and Nelson, I mean
- 5:36Speaker 3: Nelson one goal in the playoffs. Marty Natchis probably is
- 5:40Speaker 3: the bigger disappointment over got paid a hefty sum, a
- 5:44Speaker 3: bag of money, only one goal in the playoffs. That's
- 5:48Speaker 3: not enough. You're not gonna win with that, regardless of
- 5:50Speaker 3: the cars in or out. You got to get scoring.
- 5:53Speaker 3: They got to step up. But I yeah, I just
- 5:55Speaker 3: think they're Vegas is just built very well. And I
- 6:00Speaker 3: think the return of William Carlson cannot be said enough
- 6:03Speaker 3: how it open opened up Tomash Hurtle, and it also
- 6:07Speaker 3: just it created such a deep center group and again,
- 6:12Speaker 3: they just that lasts like two minutes of the game
- 6:15Speaker 3: when they're just defending so hard. It's a they put
- 6:18Speaker 3: on a masterclass.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Jack Eichland, Mark Stone, who you know.
- 6:21Speaker 3: I think towards set of Jack Eikel's the best two
- 6:23Speaker 3: and or foot player in the game. And other than
- 6:25Speaker 3: Sasha Barkov, I think that's one spot on when he
- 6:29Speaker 3: wants to be he is fucking impossible to stop.
- 6:33Speaker 4: And yeah, it's it's it's.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Gonna be tough for I think Carolina might be the
- 6:37Speaker 3: only team that can do it with their style.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I think it. I just don't.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I think Montreal makes it through by some shape or
- 6:44Speaker 3: form ad the end that they're gonna get absolutely balked
- 6:47Speaker 3: like a dog against Vegas.
- 6:49Speaker 1: One last thought of this, Serason, We'll move on, JD.
- 6:51Speaker 1: If you're the Avalanche, would you make a change in
- 6:53Speaker 1: net or do you think Jared Bednar is in the
- 6:55Speaker 1: hot seat?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Either of those?
- 6:57Speaker 3: I mean, I think a little bit all of the above.
- 6:59Speaker 3: I think they're really going to look at again, they're
- 7:02Speaker 3: they're an organization that doesn't sit out, so I don't
- 7:05Speaker 3: think Look, Brent Burns is gone, Josh Manson's getting older,
- 7:08Speaker 3: and at times did not look great in the series.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Do you move those two big trees? Malinsky struggled mightily
- 7:15Speaker 3: in the in the in the third round, did not
- 7:18Speaker 3: play good whatsoever. The Wedgwood and Blackwood tandem, it was good,
- 7:24Speaker 3: but they gave up one soft one every game. So
- 7:27Speaker 3: and then I thought there was some moments that Bednar
- 7:30Speaker 3: did not make a good He didn't make a good decision.
- 7:34Speaker 3: The way he altered things, I don't know if there
- 7:36Speaker 3: was really an adjustment. I know they they did play
- 7:38Speaker 3: well in certain games and just couldn't get a bounce,
- 7:41Speaker 3: But I don't know, Like I think Bednar for sure
- 7:44Speaker 3: is going to.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Be on the hot seat.
- 7:45Speaker 3: But I think there's a lot of question more question
- 7:49Speaker 3: marks than I think people realize with Colorado, because I
- 7:52Speaker 3: heard Eric Johnson talking the other day and I don't
- 7:54Speaker 3: know if it was on McAfee or spitting chickens, but
- 7:57Speaker 3: he's like the windows open, but like it's slowly, they're
- 8:02Speaker 3: closing it slowly, So there's still on that window, but
- 8:05Speaker 3: it's next year is going to be uh, put up
- 8:08Speaker 3: or shut up for him?
- 8:09Speaker 5: All right?
- 8:09Speaker 1: So that's the story with the guards to Vegas. Meantime,
- 8:11Speaker 1: for Carolina are they legit or are they a fugazi?
- 8:14Speaker 4: Nate.
- 8:14Speaker 1: On the one hand, as a Wednesday morning, ten to
- 8:16Speaker 1: one in these playoffs, including four known overtime. They got
- 8:19Speaker 1: both of their wins in the East Final against Montreal
- 8:21Speaker 1: in OT and the Haves still don't have a shot
- 8:23Speaker 1: in overtime in the series. Carolina hasn't been this close
- 8:26Speaker 1: to the Cup finals since they won the whole damn
- 8:28Speaker 1: thing in six. On the other hand, they've been criticized
- 8:30Speaker 1: the level of competition they've faced in the playoffs so far,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and their top scorer Sebastianaho three goals andres Feeshta got
- 8:36Speaker 1: two goals, including the OT winning game three.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Seth Jarvis just two goals. So how about it, Nate.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Is Carolina a legit power or is this an overrated
- 8:44Speaker 1: team that needs over him to beat lesser opponents.
- 8:49Speaker 6: No, this is a legit team, and they've been really
- 8:52Speaker 6: they've been taking it to Montreal, and Montreal's teams seems
- 8:56Speaker 6: to keep finding ways. And I was at the game,
- 8:59Speaker 6: and you know it was it was obviously a close game,
- 9:03Speaker 6: but I mean for Montreal, I mean they didn't have
- 9:06Speaker 6: a shot for it was a long time, a really
- 9:10Speaker 6: long time, and granted, you know they had a couple
- 9:12Speaker 6: of shots in overtime one. You know, Nick Suzuki misses
- 9:15Speaker 6: the net, Mathison hits the post. But you know, Carolina,
- 9:19Speaker 6: the way they play their system, you know, they play
- 9:22Speaker 6: it to a t and I think it doesn't matter
- 9:24Speaker 6: who's in their lineup. And you mentioned the guy, especially
- 9:27Speaker 6: Craft Jarvis, these guys that only have a couple of goals.
- 9:29Speaker 6: I think that in its point right there shows how
- 9:32Speaker 6: good this team is and how they're getting different guys
- 9:35Speaker 6: to score, and how they play and how they're making
- 9:38Speaker 6: it hard in Montreal.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Like Montreal, they're.
- 9:40Speaker 6: Having a tough time breaking out at times because of
- 9:42Speaker 6: the over overpowering for check of Carolina and the way
- 9:46Speaker 6: they play on top of them. So Montreal, I mean,
- 9:48Speaker 6: they're gonna have to make some adjustments. I thought last
- 9:51Speaker 6: game that there's just too many times where they where
- 9:54Speaker 6: they would get the puck in their D zone and
- 9:55Speaker 6: try and find a different play, try to break the
- 9:57Speaker 6: puck out, tape to tape passes where sometimes against Carolina,
- 10:01Speaker 6: man you've got to live to fight another day and
- 10:04Speaker 6: you know, maybe get the pucking behind him and use
- 10:07Speaker 6: their game against them. I think Montreal for you know,
- 10:11Speaker 6: for a game, for the next game, you know, they're
- 10:13Speaker 6: gonna have to obviously in the big part of it,
- 10:15Speaker 6: they're gonna have to get more shots.
- 10:17Speaker 5: You know.
- 10:17Speaker 6: They're not a team that is like Carolina where they
- 10:19Speaker 6: have high shot volume. But for them to get chances,
- 10:23Speaker 6: to get looks, to make plays, they're gonna have to
- 10:25Speaker 6: establish a shot and they can't just get twelve a
- 10:27Speaker 6: game to be successful against Carolina.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Mistap smetch Nick on.
- 10:34Speaker 3: They're in trouble because that first line had their best
- 10:38Speaker 3: game of the playoffs, sketch Aho and Jarvis and he
- 10:44Speaker 3: especially Cops scores the game winner. No, I think Carolina
- 10:48Speaker 3: finally adjusted and they've kind of Rod's been, you know,
- 10:54Speaker 3: banging his head against the wall for years. Our system
- 10:56Speaker 3: will win eventually. But after Game one, when they were
- 11:00Speaker 3: pinching all over the ice, they made an adjustment that
- 11:02Speaker 3: no one's made against Montreal. And they've kept three guys
- 11:05Speaker 3: in the middle, not three guys in the middle. They've
- 11:07Speaker 3: kept their third guy high above the Montreal forwards while
- 11:11Speaker 3: they're still pinching with two guys pinching hard, and it's
- 11:15Speaker 3: created havoc for Montreal. Montreal can't break out clean. They're
- 11:18Speaker 3: a little bit because Montreal has been that classic counter
- 11:21Speaker 3: punch team and they just wait for you to kind
- 11:23Speaker 3: of overpressure them.
- 11:24Speaker 4: And they got so much skill.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Carolina took that away and it has been a tilting
- 11:30Speaker 3: of the momentum, like it's crazy. So Montreal's gonna have
- 11:36Speaker 3: to adjust right back. They've done it in every series,
- 11:39Speaker 3: so I expect to wrinkle out of Montreal tonight.
- 11:42Speaker 4: But I just don't know.
- 11:43Speaker 3: I think the only line that's been treading water has
- 11:45Speaker 3: been the top line. Every single other lines get absolutely
- 11:49Speaker 3: dominated statistically, analytically by Carolina in every fast and I
- 11:54Speaker 3: just think if that first line starts going for Carolina,
- 11:58Speaker 3: there are other three lines that played amazing hockey Eelers
- 12:02Speaker 3: is flying.
- 12:04Speaker 4: I mean, that Haull line is incredible.
- 12:05Speaker 3: That's their first line, and I just can't see it, man,
- 12:08Speaker 3: unless Freddy Anderson has a aneurysm and and starts playing
- 12:13Speaker 3: like Freddy from Toronto. But if he stays like this
- 12:16Speaker 3: at all, I think it's I think it might be
- 12:19Speaker 3: in five. My man might be in five for our
- 12:21Speaker 3: habby talents. I but I keep doubting these guys and
- 12:24Speaker 3: they keep proving me wrong, and I'm about to get
- 12:27Speaker 3: my citizenship revoked because of this from Canada. But I
- 12:31Speaker 3: just I want it to happen. I want to play
- 12:33Speaker 3: that song. I want to play that song again.
- 12:35Speaker 1: It is a great cham cal clo. And he's gonna
- 12:38Speaker 1: make a Tom Green reference to road Trip. Speaking of Freddy,
- 12:41Speaker 1: Freddy got fingered. Perhaps that'll be the.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Story Jesus finger banging, remember the move finger banging?
- 12:47Speaker 2: Tom Green movie? Yeah, Ripped Torn was great.
- 12:49Speaker 1: And let's talk further about Montreal JD and Lane Hudson
- 12:52Speaker 1: a huge piece for Montreal this season.
- 12:54Speaker 2: But how do you attack young defenseman?
- 12:56Speaker 1: You make it ugly, go physical at him, hit to
- 12:58Speaker 1: his leg from Taylor Hall and overtime in game two,
- 13:01Speaker 1: left limping efforts, didn't like to hit from home and
- 13:03Speaker 1: in Game three, high elbow from William Carryer moments later
- 13:06Speaker 1: giving up that puck to turn release to special the
- 13:08Speaker 1: cops ot winner. Hudson took the blame for the loss
- 13:11Speaker 1: after the game, though you could make the point he
- 13:13Speaker 1: wouldn't be an overtime let him and his goal tying
- 13:15Speaker 1: it for on the second. But as a young player
- 13:17Speaker 1: clearly being targeted, what does Hudson do how she react
- 13:20Speaker 1: to this.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Well, I think it's just it's more of a downscreen
- 13:24Speaker 3: from the forward group giving him some time, buy him
- 13:26Speaker 3: some time. You got to let him be able to move.
- 13:28Speaker 3: They've been all over him. I still think he's battled hard.
- 13:32Speaker 3: He's exceeded all expectations in the playoffs.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Lane.
- 13:35Speaker 4: I think Lane cannot hang his head one bit.
- 13:37Speaker 3: That was a big turnover. But I don't know where
- 13:40Speaker 3: slapcoff Ski was going on that play. He kind of
- 13:42Speaker 3: was just fading away from him, and I think Lane
- 13:46Speaker 3: was waiting for him to take the puck because Lane
- 13:47Speaker 3: had been on the ice for a long time and
- 13:49Speaker 3: he took a carrier William carrier forearm to the fucking
- 13:55Speaker 3: dome piece that got. That wasn't called Naton, that was
- 13:59Speaker 3: That was a penalty, even though you're not trying to
- 14:01Speaker 3: call penalties in the playoffs. In an overtime, that was
- 14:04Speaker 3: a two minute especially at that point. And then they
- 14:07Speaker 3: go and score after that. So I think he's been great.
- 14:11Speaker 3: He's got nothing to be sad about, you know. I
- 14:14Speaker 3: think the other guys and his team need to pick
- 14:17Speaker 3: it up big time.
- 14:18Speaker 5: I think the.
- 14:18Speaker 4: Dcors showed up pretty well for for Montreal.
- 14:21Speaker 3: In this series so far, Dobson struggled a bit, but
- 14:23Speaker 3: everyone else has showed up. But Nate, I think it's
- 14:25Speaker 3: got to be the the four lines up front.
- 14:28Speaker 4: They need to they need to go here. It needs
- 14:30Speaker 4: to be their time.
- 14:31Speaker 1: A glaring shot disparity as well, Nate, it should be said,
- 14:33Speaker 1: go ahead.
- 14:34Speaker 6: Yeah, No, He's right, it's got to be everyone. And
- 14:36Speaker 6: I do think no adopts this guy has to come
- 14:39Speaker 6: to the forefront a little bit more too. Yeah, he
- 14:41Speaker 6: made a good play last game. I got called back,
- 14:43Speaker 6: but he's he's another guy. Like being in the building,
- 14:46Speaker 6: you're seeing how much like every time they get a
- 14:49Speaker 6: chance to take a chunk out of lane, they do
- 14:50Speaker 6: it every time, whether it's whether it's a hit they
- 14:54Speaker 6: that's out of play, they're they're take they're taking a
- 14:56Speaker 6: hit on They're making it hard on him every single
- 14:58Speaker 6: time he's on the ice.
- 14:59Speaker 5: And he's fighting through it. He's having to.
- 15:01Speaker 6: And I thought last game was maybe the first time
- 15:04Speaker 6: that you know, in third period overtime that the Habs
- 15:07Speaker 6: looked a little ghasted. They look like they ran out
- 15:09Speaker 6: of they ran out of steam. And I think part
- 15:13Speaker 6: of that when when you run out of steam, the
- 15:15Speaker 6: brain goes and mistakes happen, and that's what happens. So
- 15:18Speaker 6: they're going to have to bounce back tonight or bounce forward.
- 15:20Speaker 6: Martine Saint Luis would.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Say, exactly what happen.
- 15:26Speaker 5: They need it, Yes, I want.
- 15:28Speaker 7: It, No fun.
- 15:40Speaker 2: First, JD. What's what he's saying?
- 15:42Speaker 4: Sorry, yeah, tell us you have a heart out?
- 15:45Speaker 2: Can you translate what that means? What the kids saying?
- 15:47Speaker 3: It's I couldn't like I could translate it, but it's
- 15:50Speaker 3: it's like kind of a random song, but it's just
- 15:53Speaker 3: about like it's about like hunting with family and stuff,
- 15:56Speaker 3: and it's it's just kind of a folks folksy song.
- 15:59Speaker 2: There.
- 15:59Speaker 3: There is a English translation going around on Twitter.
- 16:03Speaker 4: You can find it Cal. But the kid's name is like.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Jean Lejon there something like create just some French guy
- 16:11Speaker 3: from that Beau Samian Deep in the Woods makes it
- 16:15Speaker 3: even better.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Let's hopefully we'll hear more of that jam with the
- 16:17Speaker 1: bell Setter if the Haves try to bounce back in
- 16:20Speaker 1: game four. Coming up next, Cal Clutterbuck our special guest
- 16:23Speaker 1: Thomas Hickey, my friend in colleague on Amazon Prime. I asked
- 16:26Speaker 1: for a scouting report on Cal he said, clutter has
- 16:28Speaker 1: a dry sense of humor, very witty, very funny, very grumpy.
- 16:32Speaker 2: He was very good. He's coming up after this on
- 16:34Speaker 2: NHL in scripted.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Our next guest was drafted in the third round, seventy
- 16:51Speaker 1: second over brawl by the Minnesota While in the two
- 16:53Speaker 1: thousand and six NHL Draft. He would go in to
- 16:55Speaker 1: collect one hundred and forty three goals and two or
- 16:56Speaker 1: ninety three points in one thousand and sixty four career
- 16:59Speaker 1: games with the Wild and Islanders. He remains the all
- 17:02Speaker 1: time NHL leader in hits with Fourenty twenty nine, a
- 17:06Speaker 1: first ballot inductee in the Sports Mustache Hall of Fame,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and a riverside veteran.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Welcome, Cal Clutterbuck, great to see you.
- 17:12Speaker 8: Thanks for having me, fellas. It's gonna be fun.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Absolutely, we're gonna get into your career in all the
- 17:17Speaker 1: great stories that you have for us. But you've been
- 17:19Speaker 1: working on the media side since you're towering last year.
- 17:21Speaker 1: What'd you make of these Conference finals? The fact that
- 17:23Speaker 1: Vegas Golden Knights swept the Colorado.
- 17:26Speaker 8: Avalanche kind of a shocker, right, I mean, you know,
- 17:31Speaker 8: I think after watching Game one and then again in
- 17:34Speaker 8: Game two. I think I think I became a believer
- 17:38Speaker 8: in the Knights. I always felt like they were kind
- 17:40Speaker 8: of underachieving this year along the way. Obviously coaching change
- 17:44Speaker 8: late in the year controversial, obviously the right move. That
- 17:47Speaker 8: team just has the capability, they have, the horses, they
- 17:50Speaker 8: have the they have the pedigree. So it's all starting
- 17:53Speaker 8: to come out now. And I'm not sure they surprised
- 17:56Speaker 8: the Abs or not, but just the way that they
- 17:58Speaker 8: were playing so tight, weren't really given McKinnon and any
- 18:03Speaker 8: of those guys any room to breathe, and really it
- 18:06Speaker 8: was really suffocating. It was It was interesting to watch
- 18:09Speaker 8: a team like Colorado, you know, so adept offensively, so
- 18:14Speaker 8: adept at creating just kind of get shut down like that.
- 18:16Speaker 8: So really really interesting series for me.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean Vegas is kind of put in the
- 18:22Speaker 3: blueprint of how to win. And I think if you're
- 18:25Speaker 3: any organization, like you know, we work with the Islanders,
- 18:29Speaker 3: and you get to see Matthew Shaeffer and these guys
- 18:32Speaker 3: who's going to have a long career in the in
- 18:33Speaker 3: the finals, sorry, in the finals, in the playoffs. But
- 18:36Speaker 3: you know, I just wanted to ask you quickly about
- 18:38Speaker 3: Matthew Shaeffer, because you know, Jordan Schmaltz said famously on
- 18:42Speaker 3: NHL Network that he came into training camp, pulled his
- 18:45Speaker 3: wrench out and told all the guys jump on. So
- 18:49Speaker 3: seeing him up close with MSG like, is he that
- 18:54Speaker 3: big dick energy? You don't have to answer that, but
- 18:56Speaker 3: you can answer just how high is this kid ceiling?
- 19:02Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't know. I'll have to sneak into the
- 19:03Speaker 8: showers to get a look at his ranch. I haven't
- 19:05Speaker 8: been in a couple of years. I'm gonna have to
- 19:09Speaker 8: just pretend to have to go take a leak just
- 19:11Speaker 8: when he's in there, just to kind of take a feek.
- 19:16Speaker 8: But no, I mean, listen, it was that type of thing. Ironically, metaphorically,
- 19:21Speaker 8: it's probably correct. And he came in. You know, I'll
- 19:26Speaker 8: never forget. I was in the room getting something. I
- 19:29Speaker 8: think I was getting my skates sharpened or something to
- 19:31Speaker 8: go play Men's League and he was in there, a
- 19:33Speaker 8: rookie camp and I saw him from across the room
- 19:35Speaker 8: and he walked over and kind of dabbed me up
- 19:37Speaker 8: and was like, Hey, what's up? Man, can't wait to,
- 19:40Speaker 8: you know, hang out, And I was like, okay, you
- 19:44Speaker 8: know as an eighteen year old, like I would have
- 19:46Speaker 8: never done that, I don't think to a veteran. But
- 19:48Speaker 8: it was a good thing, you know, it was It
- 19:49Speaker 8: was good. He came over and and I just remember
- 19:52Speaker 8: feeling like this is different, and everyone kept saying he's different.
- 19:56Speaker 8: You didn't know how it was going to translate on
- 19:58Speaker 8: the ice. I honestly expected there to be some some
- 20:00Speaker 8: growing pains. Maybe maybe there were throughout the year, like
- 20:04Speaker 8: a little bit, but like on his standard, I mean,
- 20:07Speaker 8: the home opener was ridiculous. He I mean even the
- 20:10Speaker 8: first game in Pittsburgh he played great, but the home
- 20:12Speaker 8: opener when the place was kind of stale and you
- 20:14Speaker 8: kind of thought yourself, this is going to be the
- 20:15Speaker 8: same Islander team and the building's going to be dead
- 20:18Speaker 8: here for the whole year. And then he goes and
- 20:20Speaker 8: slides in on one knee and Pokes went in the
- 20:22Speaker 8: power play from the point like a spear fishing job,
- 20:24Speaker 8: and everyone went crazy and it was like all right,
- 20:26Speaker 8: he got up and like did the junior seally along
- 20:28Speaker 8: the glass, and you were like, okay, there's different. There's
- 20:31Speaker 8: a different energy to this place, and it only it
- 20:32Speaker 8: only got better.
- 20:34Speaker 5: Yeah, cal I mean this.
- 20:36Speaker 6: He is special for sure, and then you know, you
- 20:38Speaker 6: go to his do you think his buddy and your
- 20:40Speaker 6: old teammate, Matt Martin had something to do with some
- 20:43Speaker 6: of his success and was there any were there any
- 20:48Speaker 6: moments or scenarios that you have with Marty and Shafe
- 20:51Speaker 6: during the season.
- 20:53Speaker 8: I spent a lot of time with the two of
- 20:54Speaker 8: them throughout the year. Marty obviously a close friend of mine.
- 20:58Speaker 8: I think for Matthew, I think he's such a family
- 21:02Speaker 8: orientated kid that going into that scenario, and you got
- 21:06Speaker 8: to give him a lot of credit as much as
- 21:08Speaker 8: you've got to give them the Martins a lot of credit.
- 21:10Speaker 8: He just embraced it. I mean, they've got four kids
- 21:12Speaker 8: under five. He's at the rink all day. He's doing
- 21:16Speaker 8: you know the extra stuff that that phenoms do, you know,
- 21:18Speaker 8: the stuff that people don't see. Commercials, interviews, hospital visits.
- 21:22Speaker 8: You get to see clips of them. But he's busy
- 21:24Speaker 8: all day and then he gets home and and you
- 21:27Speaker 8: see those clips to him running around the kitchen with
- 21:29Speaker 8: with the girls and they've got, you know, twin boys
- 21:32Speaker 8: that are like eleven months old now, so that house
- 21:34Speaker 8: is full. But he's just that type of kid that
- 21:38Speaker 8: seems to seems to thrive in that environment. He just
- 21:41Speaker 8: I think he felt taken care of, and I think
- 21:43Speaker 8: in turn, he you know, he's you got to remember
- 21:46Speaker 8: he's he is just a kid. He was able to
- 21:47Speaker 8: be a kid in that house. I think it would
- 21:49Speaker 8: have been a different year for him had he been
- 21:51Speaker 8: going back to a to an apartment by himself sitting there.
- 21:55Speaker 8: You know, it just it's it's much different. And you know,
- 21:58Speaker 8: to the point where I don't know if he's gonna leave,
- 22:00Speaker 8: Like he might just live in the basement until he
- 22:02Speaker 8: has his own kids.
- 22:04Speaker 5: I would I.
- 22:06Speaker 4: Wouldn't either his girlfriend.
- 22:07Speaker 3: His girlfriend's gonna be like, two, you gotta get out.
- 22:09Speaker 3: He who We've been together for ten.
- 22:10Speaker 8: Years, dude, it's it is gonna be that situation. It's like,
- 22:13Speaker 8: at what point are we going to get our own place?
- 22:16Speaker 8: But no, he's Uh. They were great for him, obviously,
- 22:19Speaker 8: great family, good friend of mine Marty and Sid and
- 22:23Speaker 8: but again he needed that family environment and he really
- 22:25Speaker 8: thrived in it.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Cal you came from well and Ontario, famously gave us
- 22:30Speaker 1: other NHL players of Daniel Pie, Dan Girardi and the
- 22:33Speaker 1: great Paul Bissonett. What was it like coming up with
- 22:35Speaker 1: those guys in well and Ontario.
- 22:38Speaker 8: Ah, well, this was a little different than the rest obviously, No,
- 22:46Speaker 8: but believe it or not, he wasn't he was not
- 22:48Speaker 8: bus nasty back then. He was he was square, he
- 22:51Speaker 8: was shy, he was kind of a brown noser, so
- 22:55Speaker 8: you know, he was different. Uh and then he went
- 22:58Speaker 8: to Wheeling, West Virginia and everything changed, but uh, you
- 23:01Speaker 8: know he Uh, those guys were great. It was really
- 23:04Speaker 8: good for me because you could see those guys taking
- 23:06Speaker 8: steps in front of you, like three years in front
- 23:08Speaker 8: of me, two years in front of me, Matt Ellis
- 23:10Speaker 8: and Jamie tardterf a couple of guys who got close
- 23:12Speaker 8: as well Andre Debou. There was a big group of us.
- 23:15Speaker 8: You get to skate with them a little. You can
- 23:17Speaker 8: see how they train, and you can see it's possible.
- 23:20Speaker 8: So you see a guy that's going graduating at every
- 23:22Speaker 8: level that you're graduating, and so you try and just
- 23:24Speaker 8: keep yourself in line with those guys in order to
- 23:26Speaker 8: get to where you want to go. But you know,
- 23:29Speaker 8: it would have it would have been a lot more
- 23:30Speaker 8: difficult if I didn't have if I didn't have someone
- 23:33Speaker 8: to look at that was close to me in age
- 23:34Speaker 8: that that I kind of knew able to do it.
- 23:38Speaker 8: I think there's there's more doubt in your mind where
- 23:40Speaker 8: you don't know somebody or don't see somebody doing it
- 23:43Speaker 8: just a little bit older than you. So I have
- 23:44Speaker 8: a lot of give a lot of credit to those guys.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Yeah, Cal, you know, you've had such a great career,
- 23:49Speaker 3: and you know the sometimes the second career is the
- 23:52Speaker 3: hardest to define for an athlete. You know, you're trying
- 23:55Speaker 3: to figure it out. And I feel like you slid
- 23:57Speaker 3: nicely into into media.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Was there ever a struggle with that?
- 24:01Speaker 3: And you know, is there any has there been any
- 24:04Speaker 3: kind of things that surprised you a little bit with it?
- 24:08Speaker 3: Because it is tough once you retire to kind of
- 24:11Speaker 3: red like I said, redefine yourself.
- 24:13Speaker 4: And you've done a great job.
- 24:14Speaker 3: So it's it's what has kind of been the struggles
- 24:16Speaker 3: of that and and what has been like you felt
- 24:20Speaker 3: that's maybe went more smoothly for you than you thought.
- 24:25Speaker 8: I wasn't I wasn't really ever expecting to do it.
- 24:28Speaker 8: I was probably that guy who when I was playing
- 24:31Speaker 8: like would would have been like, you won't catch me
- 24:33Speaker 8: dad doing that? So I'm I'm definitely a hypocrite sitting
- 24:37Speaker 8: here today after doing it for a couple of years.
- 24:40Speaker 4: So many nerds in media look at that, and then
- 24:42Speaker 4: very nerds.
- 24:43Speaker 8: In media, and then look at me now sitting here
- 24:48Speaker 8: answering questions about being a member of the media. So,
- 24:52Speaker 8: you know what, though, it really was for me. The
- 24:55Speaker 8: easiest part for me was when I first started. I
- 24:57Speaker 8: started as a guest on a pregame show, and it
- 25:00Speaker 8: was no pressure. I just kind of treated it like
- 25:02Speaker 8: it was an interview or like it was a pod cast,
- 25:04Speaker 8: and you know it was. It went well because I've
- 25:09Speaker 8: done so many interviews and I've done things like that,
- 25:13Speaker 8: and cameras don't really bother me, you know, you know
- 25:15Speaker 8: how it is. JD and Nate like you guys, you're
- 25:17Speaker 8: used to the camera. You clear that hurdle before you
- 25:19Speaker 8: even start. I think for a lot of people not
- 25:21Speaker 8: being used to cameras, there's a certain amount of nerves
- 25:24Speaker 8: that comes with when those lights could turn on, and
- 25:26Speaker 8: I didn't really have that. That was the easy part,
- 25:30Speaker 8: and then the hard part was as you evolve from
- 25:32Speaker 8: a guest to a regular and then you go from
- 25:35Speaker 8: being a pregame show to between the benches guy, and
- 25:38Speaker 8: then you go sit in the first chair. So the
- 25:40Speaker 8: evolution of that requires just a little bit different cadence,
- 25:43Speaker 8: a little bit different timing, and probably for me, the
- 25:45Speaker 8: biggest one was my energy, so my sort of annunciation,
- 25:51Speaker 8: my pronunciation, especially between the benches, because it's a little
- 25:54Speaker 8: harder here because you're kind of mixed in with game sound.
- 25:57Speaker 8: You have to be emphatic when you make your calls
- 25:59Speaker 8: a little bit out of my comfort zone because I'm
- 26:01Speaker 8: a pretty monotone regular speed guys. So I had to
- 26:05Speaker 8: sort of learn how to add some inflection and get
- 26:09Speaker 8: excited about it. And that was the hardest part for
- 26:11Speaker 8: me at the beginning is you know, you're a player.
- 26:14Speaker 8: You know that there's a game that might be over,
- 26:17Speaker 8: but there's a play that happens. Let's say the Islanders
- 26:18Speaker 8: are down four to one or you know, three to one,
- 26:21Speaker 8: but you can see how the game's trending, and you're like,
- 26:23Speaker 8: this is an exciting for Islander fans. And then they
- 26:25Speaker 8: score one late to get in and Brendan Burk's like
- 26:28Speaker 8: and the Islanders come within one, and I'm like, yeah,
- 26:31Speaker 8: nice play by Horrorbat. And there's a couple of moments,
- 26:34Speaker 8: a couple of moments like that, you know, where I
- 26:36Speaker 8: was just like I kind of didn't I wasn't able
- 26:38Speaker 8: to sort of rise to the to the energy level.
- 26:42Speaker 8: But just a couple of quick notes from a producer
- 26:44Speaker 8: and then you know, you start to like just you
- 26:46Speaker 8: go over the top what I think is over the top,
- 26:48Speaker 8: and then I get a note say that's perfect. So
- 26:50Speaker 8: then you just kind of stick with that talk a
- 26:52Speaker 8: little louder and things like that. And just for me,
- 26:56Speaker 8: the amount of work, like doing the pregame show, the
- 27:00Speaker 8: between the benches, the intermissions, and the post game is
- 27:02Speaker 8: a lot of running around and it's a lot of
- 27:04Speaker 8: it's different styles, so you're mixing in a studio show,
- 27:07Speaker 8: running right to in game commentary, running up the stairs
- 27:10Speaker 8: to do you know studios. So a lot of a
- 27:14Speaker 8: lot of kind of switching gears. But it's been a
- 27:17Speaker 8: lot of fun, and I just continue to try and
- 27:19Speaker 8: get better. And uh, I've got a great team there
- 27:21Speaker 8: in New York of you know, Thomas and Brendan and
- 27:23Speaker 8: Channon do a really good job. So I was lucky.
- 27:27Speaker 8: I was lucky to uh, I've been lucky to be
- 27:30Speaker 8: able to work with them.
- 27:32Speaker 6: Yeah, cal This will follow up with that is is
- 27:34Speaker 6: there any analysts or guys that you watch just to
- 27:38Speaker 6: kind of go off of and and and why is
- 27:41Speaker 6: it not Biz?
- 27:43Speaker 8: One thing I will say about One thing I will
- 27:45Speaker 8: say about Biz is that he's worked really hard. And
- 27:49Speaker 8: if you watch him, aside from the the Tom foolery,
- 27:52Speaker 8: he's worked really hard at getting his hockey analysis. You know,
- 27:55Speaker 8: I think what he says, he says it in a
- 27:57Speaker 8: Biz way, but a lot of what he says, you know,
- 28:00Speaker 8: makes a lot of sense. I think he has good takes. Yeah,
- 28:03Speaker 8: And so I think he's at that. You know, I
- 28:05Speaker 8: think he watches hockey. I think he pays attention. I
- 28:08Speaker 8: think he genuinely asked questions to the guys he's working with.
- 28:11Speaker 8: I hear stories about him. When he was working with
- 28:12Speaker 8: Rick Taki, they would spend time talking about the game.
- 28:15Speaker 8: And so I have to give him a lot of
- 28:17Speaker 8: credit for that. And then you have to give him
- 28:19Speaker 8: credit for for letting his personality carry him. You know,
- 28:22Speaker 8: he's he does something different than everyone and that's why
- 28:25Speaker 8: he's in the position that he's in, and so you
- 28:28Speaker 8: got to give him give him credit on both sides
- 28:30Speaker 8: of that. But he does a good job of balancing that,
- 28:31Speaker 8: I think these days, but you know, I always liked
- 28:34Speaker 8: watching the older guys. I think Ray Ferraro is probably
- 28:37Speaker 8: the one that has a kind of perfect mix of
- 28:41Speaker 8: energy and passion for the game and knowledge of the players,
- 28:45Speaker 8: but also just calling the play as it is, but
- 28:49Speaker 8: but from a hockey players from a former player's, you know, mindset.
- 28:54Speaker 8: He does a really good job. I really like Eddie,
- 28:57Speaker 8: ol Chick and boush together, obviously for different reasons. I
- 29:02Speaker 8: think for for me, those two play off each other
- 29:05Speaker 8: very well, and Thomas and I obviously for the Islanders
- 29:08Speaker 8: are probably going to be in those two positions for
- 29:10Speaker 8: a couple of years. So just sort of learning from
- 29:14Speaker 8: from Boushe on when you know one to when to
- 29:17Speaker 8: come in, and then you know Eddie using them for
- 29:20Speaker 8: different things, different perspectives, and they're on nationally, so you watch,
- 29:24Speaker 8: you watch a lot of those guys, and you know
- 29:27Speaker 8: that come that kind of becomes the standard, right I mean,
- 29:29Speaker 8: you those guys have been doing it for so long.
- 29:31Speaker 8: They do a great joke.
- 29:33Speaker 1: I echo the positive thoughts for Thomas Sicky. Of course
- 29:35Speaker 1: my team at an Amazon Prime, so you guys are
- 29:36Speaker 1: definitely terrific together. Cal let's talk specifically about you your
- 29:40Speaker 1: port to Houston the HL as the youngest player on
- 29:42Speaker 1: the team. You score on your first shot on your
- 29:45Speaker 1: first shift in your first pro game, cockumust of felt easy.
- 29:50Speaker 5: Easy game.
- 29:52Speaker 8: Yeah, Well the problem was was the HL not the NHL,
- 29:54Speaker 8: so it didn't matter. I only scored.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Uh.
- 29:58Speaker 8: I think I only scored twelve times that year, So
- 30:00Speaker 8: it was uh. It was a fast and furious art
- 30:04Speaker 8: and some learning curves in the middle, but uh, yeah, no,
- 30:09Speaker 8: Houston was was good. That was kind of a shell shock.
- 30:12Speaker 8: That's you know, that's the first year where you're on
- 30:14Speaker 8: your own.
- 30:14Speaker 5: I was.
- 30:14Speaker 8: I was young enough coming out of junior and moving
- 30:18Speaker 8: out of a bill at home into Houston, Texas, one
- 30:20Speaker 8: of the biggest largest cities in America. Totally different, uh,
- 30:25Speaker 8: demographic than I was used to in Oshawa, Ontario. So
- 30:28Speaker 8: it was a fun year for me to get to
- 30:30Speaker 8: to experience the US and not only the US, you know,
- 30:33Speaker 8: the southern United States and and of course the travel
- 30:36Speaker 8: that comes along with playing in Houston in the h
- 30:38Speaker 8: L when all the teams you play against in your
- 30:41Speaker 8: division are based out of Chicago. So you know, it
- 30:43Speaker 8: was a lot of a lot of flying, a lot
- 30:46Speaker 8: of Delta miles, United miles, a lot of early bus rides,
- 30:49Speaker 8: a lot of late nights, but really good for sort
- 30:53Speaker 8: of getting you used to you know, long NHL seasons.
- 30:56Speaker 8: And you know, we we had an average team, but
- 30:59Speaker 8: it was a lot of fun and uh I had
- 31:01Speaker 8: I had a good time.
- 31:03Speaker 3: You had a nice cast the characters too, And and
- 31:06Speaker 3: I know we both played with Brent Burns and to
- 31:09Speaker 3: watch him still playing is just an absolute frickin marvel man.
- 31:13Speaker 3: And you know, did you ever expect to see him
- 31:17Speaker 3: get this far and be and kind of reinvent them
- 31:20Speaker 3: himself so many different times? I feel like as a player,
- 31:23Speaker 3: but you know what what's but and also as a personality,
- 31:27Speaker 3: like do you have a fond memory of Burnsy and
- 31:30Speaker 3: being around him and Minnie?
- 31:33Speaker 8: Yeah? I have a couple my wife that my I
- 31:39Speaker 8: was going to tell a story about my wife doing
- 31:41Speaker 8: a front flip off of his like nine foot rock
- 31:43Speaker 8: face in his pool and landing like face first in
- 31:46Speaker 8: front of one hundred people. So that's basically the story.
- 31:50Speaker 8: I basically had to swim to the bottom of the
- 31:52Speaker 8: pool the grabber because she was so embarrassed. She didn't
- 31:54Speaker 8: want to come up. She was just gonna stay down there,
- 31:57Speaker 8: but burns y.
- 31:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:59Speaker 8: The one I always tell people is is is the
- 32:02Speaker 8: snake story. He had like an eight foot you know,
- 32:05Speaker 8: a banana python in the basement. I would go over
- 32:08Speaker 8: there and hang out, and he asked me one time
- 32:10Speaker 8: if I wanted to feed the python because it was
- 32:12Speaker 8: feeding time, and you know, you could picture me like
- 32:16Speaker 8: like Tom Green and road trip, just like is it
- 32:18Speaker 8: time for the feeding yet? Is it time for the
- 32:20Speaker 8: So we go into the freezer. We grab like an
- 32:27Speaker 8: eight pound frozen rabbit. He goes and smacks it on
- 32:29Speaker 8: the concrete a couple of times, and I'm like, what
- 32:31Speaker 8: are you doing. He's like, gotta bloody it up a
- 32:33Speaker 8: little or he won't eat it. So he's like put
- 32:35Speaker 8: the glove on, and then you gotta shake it. You know,
- 32:37Speaker 8: you got to shake it in the cage because you
- 32:38Speaker 8: got to eat the snake's gotta think. He's like, you know,
- 32:40Speaker 8: chasing something that's alive. So I got my hand in
- 32:43Speaker 8: the cage shaking this eight pound rabbit, and the thing
- 32:47Speaker 8: like circles around and comes over slowly and then just
- 32:50Speaker 8: like wax it and then it starts just taking it down,
- 32:54Speaker 8: you know, the jaw on hinges, and this rabbit just disappears.
- 32:56Speaker 8: I'm sitting there watching and I was like, that's crazy,
- 33:00Speaker 8: and he's just like, yeah, he's good for like a
- 33:02Speaker 8: month and a half, six weeks, So it'll take him
- 33:04Speaker 8: to get through that thing and I'll feed him in
- 33:06Speaker 8: you know, another month. This is crazy. He had like
- 33:08Speaker 8: he had so many of them. They were in drawers.
- 33:10Speaker 8: That guy got out one time. They found him like
- 33:12Speaker 8: three days later, wrapped around the water heater. So interesting, yeah, interesting.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Time, my god. Yeah, yeah, for three days.
- 33:21Speaker 8: He didn't care. It was just like, oh, whatever, where
- 33:23Speaker 8: it'll be somewhere, we'll find it. Big dog just just
- 33:27Speaker 8: wrapped around the water here. Uh, he's done. He's He's
- 33:31Speaker 8: got so many cool quirky things. But to his to
- 33:34Speaker 8: his uh you know, his longevity, I think like this
- 33:37Speaker 8: strength in him and his and his youthful mind. And
- 33:39Speaker 8: I say youthful mind in a positive and negative way,
- 33:42Speaker 8: because he's like a nine year old, you know him, right,
- 33:44Speaker 8: He's yeah, he had but he has the energy of
- 33:47Speaker 8: the of a child. He doesn't have the same he
- 33:50Speaker 8: doesn't have the same issues that we all had as
- 33:52Speaker 8: we got older, like, oh my god, I gotta do
- 33:53Speaker 8: this again. He's just like he wakes up, bounces out
- 33:56Speaker 8: of bed, probably at six thirty like a you know,
- 33:59Speaker 8: like my eight year old son does. And he's just like,
- 34:01Speaker 8: do I have a hockey game today? Yeah, let's go,
- 34:03Speaker 8: you know. And he takes care of himself obviously strong
- 34:06Speaker 8: as an ox and uh has always taken good care
- 34:09Speaker 8: of himself, and obviously it's gone to another level over
- 34:12Speaker 8: the last couple of years with the backpack and all
- 34:14Speaker 8: the stuff. But I think it's his brain. I think
- 34:17Speaker 8: it's just his positive outlook on it and his his
- 34:20Speaker 8: sort of youthful exuberance that he's never allowed kind of
- 34:24Speaker 8: to leave him, which is the most impressive thing for me.
- 34:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think he's done either. I think he's
- 34:30Speaker 5: going to keep going.
- 34:32Speaker 3: The wife sus I don't know, kind of Susan's getting
- 34:36Speaker 3: close to the end of the road.
- 34:37Speaker 4: Yeah, Susan's definitely might squeak out one more.
- 34:41Speaker 5: But we'll see.
- 34:42Speaker 6: I guess you you know, when you get to the
- 34:44Speaker 6: Islanders cal you know, I was a fourth line guy
- 34:47Speaker 6: and you played with Matt Martin.
- 34:52Speaker 5: It was the best fourth line in the league.
- 34:54Speaker 6: You know, talk about your guys' chemistry and and how
- 34:57Speaker 6: fast it took you guys to be a force out there.
- 35:01Speaker 8: Yeah, I got traded there. I got there in twenty
- 35:05Speaker 8: thirteen in the summer. And that first year we didn't
- 35:09Speaker 8: play together. I think they were playing with Colin McDonald
- 35:12Speaker 8: at the time, so there was c mac. I was
- 35:15Speaker 8: playing kind of kind of on the third line. We
- 35:17Speaker 8: did not have a great year after they the Islanders
- 35:19Speaker 8: had made the playoffs in that shortened lockout season for
- 35:22Speaker 8: the first time in a long time, so there was
- 35:24Speaker 8: high expectations. We didn't make the playoffs that first year.
- 35:27Speaker 8: We came back the following year and we had some
- 35:31Speaker 8: younger guys. Ryan Strom was coming in brock Nelson's rookie
- 35:33Speaker 8: year andrews Lee as well, so the team kind of
- 35:36Speaker 8: took on a little different shape. And like Jack Capiano
- 35:41Speaker 8: came up to me one time and he's like, I
- 35:42Speaker 8: think I'm gonna try you with with Casey and Marty
- 35:45Speaker 8: and and I said, yeah, no problem. He said, if
- 35:50Speaker 8: it works out, I'm gonna use you guys more than
- 35:51Speaker 8: I typically would. So don't you know, just go and
- 35:53Speaker 8: do your thing. You know, I think you can. You
- 35:56Speaker 8: guys would be good together. We all had different sort
- 35:58Speaker 8: of skill sets, and we all had one sort of
- 36:00Speaker 8: constant theme. We all kind of played the game with
- 36:03Speaker 8: the same level of kind of pace at the time
- 36:07Speaker 8: in mindset. So we started and it just it went well.
- 36:11Speaker 8: You know, I think the first first game we had,
- 36:13Speaker 8: we kind of want to face off to start the game,
- 36:15Speaker 8: dumped it in. You know, we've seen the movie a
- 36:17Speaker 8: thousand times already, to go in get a hit. I'd
- 36:19Speaker 8: go to they go D to D. I'd go hit
- 36:20Speaker 8: the other defenseman in case you would get over top
- 36:23Speaker 8: a couple couple of point shots twenty five second shift,
- 36:26Speaker 8: the goalie would freeze the puck the coliseum, we'd be
- 36:29Speaker 8: going crazy. We'd skate off. We did our job, and
- 36:31Speaker 8: we just kind of kept going from there. But it
- 36:33Speaker 8: really evolved. We played together for so long, it really
- 36:36Speaker 8: evolved to the point where we could go out there
- 36:39Speaker 8: and play against other teams, like really top players, and
- 36:41Speaker 8: we did that, you know, kind of just chipping away
- 36:44Speaker 8: at their best defenseman, chipping away at their best forwards.
- 36:46Speaker 8: In this a couple of playoff series against Pittsburgh, we
- 36:48Speaker 8: played against it a lot. He didn't do a whole
- 36:50Speaker 8: lot so we really had the ability to go out
- 36:54Speaker 8: there and give our offensive guys to the freedom to
- 36:57Speaker 8: go out and play offense against you know, bottom bottom
- 37:02Speaker 8: six lines on the other team. I think it was
- 37:04Speaker 8: a big advantage for us. And obviously the physical element.
- 37:07Speaker 8: I think we were just really good at setting the tone.
- 37:09Speaker 8: You know, as they say in choresy, he's got to
- 37:11Speaker 8: set the tone. We would go out there for.
- 37:12Speaker 3: A shift to set very bulldogs that's right. So we
- 37:16Speaker 3: were really very bulldog line.
- 37:19Speaker 8: We were the gym's the gyms so good. Yeah, this
- 37:25Speaker 8: is the gym's.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Uh cal Loula Morella comes the Islanders, immediately imposes anti
- 37:32Speaker 1: facial hair rules and I have a great deal of
- 37:34Speaker 1: respect for lou always accomplished in hockey, but I never
- 37:36Speaker 1: really understood these types of rules. How rough was it
- 37:38Speaker 1: for you having to shave on the sweetest stashes in
- 37:40Speaker 1: the NHL?
- 37:42Speaker 8: It was a It was an adjustment period for me.
- 37:45Speaker 8: Even the beard liked. I like having a beard and
- 37:48Speaker 8: trying to be trying to be an intimidated, intimidating guy
- 37:51Speaker 8: out there. You know, I wasn't that intimidating for clean
- 37:57Speaker 8: shaven with a homet on. Honestly, look at the photos
- 37:59Speaker 8: of those seven or eight years and the young guys
- 38:01Speaker 8: who came in must have been like, man, what a pussy.
- 38:04Speaker 4: And with a neck crash too.
- 38:11Speaker 8: Yeah, just raspberry neck out there, just you know, chin
- 38:13Speaker 8: strap just irritating me every single morning. But it was,
- 38:17Speaker 8: you know, it's one of those rules where obviously our
- 38:20Speaker 8: team sort of took on, uh, you know, the the
- 38:23Speaker 8: ultimate Lou sort of aura that was kind of the Islanders.
- 38:26Speaker 8: We were so predictable but very hard to beat. And
- 38:31Speaker 8: you know, we we had some good years with Low
- 38:33Speaker 8: and he really does know how to instill, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 8: a culture in a group of guys with not that
- 38:38Speaker 8: we really needed it, but we needed it. We needed
- 38:41Speaker 8: a boost and a reminder constantly. And he's he keeps
- 38:43Speaker 8: the standard. You know, we kind of had a standard
- 38:45Speaker 8: for ourselves and he elevated it just a little bit.
- 38:47Speaker 8: And then he brought Barry in, so things went from
- 38:49Speaker 8: being slightly less professional on Long Island to very legit,
- 38:55Speaker 8: very professional, very very structured.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Yeah, Like, what is it about Lou?
- 39:00Speaker 3: Is it the fact that he's there every day and
- 39:02Speaker 3: you just always see him and he's on the road
- 39:04Speaker 3: and or is it just the because there are guys
- 39:08Speaker 3: that like him, and I think most guys that have
- 39:11Speaker 3: had that have played for him or under him. Is
- 39:15Speaker 3: kind of has some positive things to say at times.
- 39:18Speaker 3: And I don't know if it's just he's misunderstood, but
- 39:21Speaker 3: I know the hard ass side of him is really
- 39:24Speaker 3: one of those things that it's you have to be
- 39:27Speaker 3: a part of the organization to really see what he
- 39:29Speaker 3: does day in and day out.
- 39:32Speaker 8: Yeah, it looks hard. It looks like a hard ass
- 39:35Speaker 8: from the outside. I even thought the same thing before
- 39:37Speaker 8: he came. I was like, Oh, it's just it's gonna
- 39:39Speaker 8: be more difficult, like we're gonna have somebody you know,
- 39:42Speaker 8: up your ass all the time. And it's really not
- 39:44Speaker 8: like that. It's like the rules. He doesn't really have rules.
- 39:47Speaker 8: It's just like be a good teammate, be a good
- 39:50Speaker 8: human being, be on time, like all the things, and
- 39:54Speaker 8: shake your face and it's just it's just a self
- 39:58Speaker 8: respect thing. And I think for for pros who are pros,
- 40:01Speaker 8: like you know, you do TV and you're like, this
- 40:03Speaker 8: guy's been a pros pro for a long time. Whether
- 40:05Speaker 8: he has to shave or he doesn't shave, he's going
- 40:07Speaker 8: to do it because that's just who a pro is.
- 40:09Speaker 8: I think he does it for the guys who are
- 40:10Speaker 8: learning to be pros. It's just another thing, it's another checkbox.
- 40:14Speaker 8: It's like to make your bed situation. You know, you
- 40:17Speaker 8: hear a lot of these former special Ops guys and
- 40:19Speaker 8: it starts with a very minute, basic task. But if
- 40:22Speaker 8: you do it consistently every day, your day starts off
- 40:25Speaker 8: in a positive way. So that's that's that was the
- 40:28Speaker 8: impetus behind that. But for lou what's great about louis
- 40:31Speaker 8: you're always taken care of and you have to worry
- 40:33Speaker 8: about nothing but playing hockey. So like you know, a
- 40:36Speaker 8: lot of teams will have casino knights and they'll have
- 40:40Speaker 8: you know, uh, season ticket holder events, and not that
- 40:42Speaker 8: those aren't great, but when you're in the middle of
- 40:45Speaker 8: a season and you come off an eight game road
- 40:47Speaker 8: trip and you've got a Monday off and you have
- 40:48Speaker 8: to go be a you know, casino night at six pm,
- 40:52Speaker 8: it's difficult. We just played hockey and the fans didn't
- 40:56Speaker 8: like it, but it was the best thing for us
- 40:58Speaker 8: at the time. We were such so focused as a
- 41:01Speaker 8: group and it was one of those things where he
- 41:03Speaker 8: is always there. He's he's always around, even when you're
- 41:06Speaker 8: chit chatting about something and then you get the eyeballs
- 41:09Speaker 8: from your teammate who's sitting on the trainer's table, like
- 41:11Speaker 8: looking at you, like he's standing round. Yeah, he's standing
- 41:14Speaker 8: over your shoulder. So it was he always is around.
- 41:19Speaker 8: And so the good thing about that is that you
- 41:21Speaker 8: know that he's the first guy there in the morning
- 41:23Speaker 8: and he's the last guy to leave, so he's working
- 41:25Speaker 8: more than anyone else is working. So he upholds that
- 41:28Speaker 8: standard first, so nobody can say anything to him about that.
- 41:31Speaker 8: And then he really takes care of you like he
- 41:34Speaker 8: you know, if he says, you know, if you get
- 41:36Speaker 8: yourself in trouble, come to me first. I don't want
- 41:39Speaker 8: you to lie. That's that's the big one. Just don't
- 41:41Speaker 8: lie to me, tell me what happened, and we'll figure
- 41:42Speaker 8: it out. But you know, his uh, he really took
- 41:47Speaker 8: care of us. And you realize once you play for
- 41:49Speaker 8: him that that's why people love him. Things are taken
- 41:52Speaker 8: care of. You get your opportunities if if, if you
- 41:55Speaker 8: earn them, and and you don't have to worry about
- 41:58Speaker 8: anything but playing hockey.
- 42:01Speaker 6: How often would you get a warning about your facial hair?
- 42:03Speaker 6: Did he ever tell you hey, like it's it's just
- 42:05Speaker 6: that you to bring it down a little bit.
- 42:08Speaker 8: Never got a Warner, never.
- 42:10Speaker 5: Got pros pro.
- 42:12Speaker 4: Keep it to the wood, pros pro, keep.
- 42:14Speaker 8: It to the wood, keep it down to the Randy Wood.
- 42:18Speaker 5: Cal you were. You were a guy.
- 42:19Speaker 6: You were known for, you know, your physicality, but also
- 42:23Speaker 6: being able to chirp your opponents. And I know I
- 42:25Speaker 6: was chirped a few times by you. Was it was
- 42:27Speaker 6: that part of your game. Was that something that you
- 42:29Speaker 6: know got you into the game and and you know
- 42:31Speaker 6: made you uh, like I said, dialed into the game.
- 42:37Speaker 8: Yeah, I was. I mean, especially early in my career,
- 42:40Speaker 8: was like, I uh, I don't know, That's just how
- 42:44Speaker 8: I played. I was very competitive. It's part of my competitiveness.
- 42:46Speaker 8: And I just always liked I like talking a lot.
- 42:51Speaker 8: Later in my career, there was really no one to
- 42:53Speaker 8: talk to because you know, guys wouldn't be able to respond.
- 42:56Speaker 8: You like, you used to have a couple of guys
- 42:58Speaker 8: in every team you could have some fun with. Later
- 43:00Speaker 8: in there weren't a lot There weren't a lot of
- 43:05Speaker 8: guys really to have a conversation with out there and
- 43:07Speaker 8: so and then a lot of guys you played against
- 43:09Speaker 8: for so long that it's like we can't just keep
- 43:12Speaker 8: doing the same song and dance. So you just go
- 43:14Speaker 8: play the game hard and something comes up. Something comes up.
- 43:16Speaker 8: But back in the day, I would say my years
- 43:19Speaker 8: in Minnesota, in my first three or four years, and
- 43:21Speaker 8: in uh in New York, It's just it was like
- 43:24Speaker 8: part of it getting me into the game and get
- 43:26Speaker 8: me engaged and getting getting kind of everyone else involved,
- 43:28Speaker 8: and I just, uh, you know, I would always try
- 43:32Speaker 8: and make my teammates laugh with my trip. So you know,
- 43:34Speaker 8: it was like guys would come by, and guys would
- 43:36Speaker 8: be annoying on the other team, So I'd come up
- 43:37Speaker 8: with something clever and and wait till he was in
- 43:40Speaker 8: front of our bench, and so everybody could hear it,
- 43:41Speaker 8: and I'd say it loud enough for everybody.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I like, I like, wait until the guy
- 43:50Speaker 3: gets by his bench, and then just say, dude, guys
- 43:54Speaker 3: are telling me you're like the fucking worst teammate ever.
- 43:57Speaker 3: And he's like, I fuck you, man, And then I
- 44:00Speaker 3: know he's on the bench being like, who said it.
- 44:05Speaker 8: I used to do that all the time. I used
- 44:07Speaker 8: to do that all the time. When you used to
- 44:09Speaker 8: line up as a right winger. You'd line up in
- 44:10Speaker 8: front of the other team's bench and then somebody from
- 44:13Speaker 8: the bench over your shoulder would be chirping you. Before
- 44:15Speaker 8: the puck drops, you would say that exact thing. You
- 44:17Speaker 8: turn around and be like, bro, we all know that
- 44:19Speaker 8: nobody on this bench likes you. Like what are you
- 44:22Speaker 8: even doing?
- 44:23Speaker 4: You can't say anything, it's like and.
- 44:26Speaker 8: Then he's just like who on my team did he
- 44:28Speaker 8: play with before? Like who does he know? Who was
- 44:30Speaker 8: it to send it?
- 44:30Speaker 1: Like?
- 44:30Speaker 8: Who doesn't like me? He spends the rest of the
- 44:32Speaker 8: game thinking about it.
- 44:34Speaker 3: I used to do it when I knew, like I
- 44:35Speaker 3: had a great buddy on the other team, so like
- 44:38Speaker 3: I'd be like one of my best buddies and I
- 44:39Speaker 3: go to a guy like next to Vick, Dude, I
- 44:42Speaker 3: heard you're just the worst. And then I know after
- 44:44Speaker 3: the game, my buddy's like why the fuck He's in
- 44:46Speaker 3: the room asking me would you guys say something?
- 44:51Speaker 8: It's always the best because I would always be laughing
- 44:54Speaker 8: on the bench because I know exactly why and how
- 44:56Speaker 8: it's how it's done. There are a few guys where
- 44:58Speaker 8: like it was always true, but everyone knew it, and
- 44:59Speaker 8: then they probably hurt it every game, so it was
- 45:01Speaker 8: just like whatever, but one of those mid guys just
- 45:06Speaker 8: would be like what wait who you know it was?
- 45:10Speaker 8: It was one of the best because like it's it
- 45:12Speaker 8: just ruminates for a period and a half, creates dissension
- 45:15Speaker 8: in the locker room and again you do it, you
- 45:17Speaker 8: do it in front of the whole bench. So he's
- 45:18Speaker 8: just sitting there like he thinks he's got you with one.
- 45:20Speaker 8: Ah yeah, Clari, you pussy. Was just like nobody likes you.
- 45:24Speaker 8: Bro talk to these guys all the time. What are
- 45:26Speaker 8: you talking about? And then the whole bench has to
- 45:29Speaker 8: laugh at him. He's just like nice one.
- 45:30Speaker 5: You know. Wait.
- 45:32Speaker 8: I would always wait for like I would come up
- 45:34Speaker 8: with one for for every guy, and I would just
- 45:35Speaker 8: kind of wait for that situation when I was standing
- 45:37Speaker 8: in front of their bench, and inevitably they would say
- 45:39Speaker 8: something to me. But I had one in the chamber
- 45:40Speaker 8: loaded ready to go, like a pretty good one. I
- 45:43Speaker 8: was always big about attacking physical features like you know,
- 45:46Speaker 8: big noses, bad visors, yeah, you know, terrible style like
- 45:50Speaker 8: all that stuff, you know.
- 45:53Speaker 5: Oh yeah, bad breath.

- 46:31Speaker 1: fil and sixty on Withering Heights. That was the film
- 46:34Speaker 1: starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Alordie. It was a modest

- 47:20Speaker 1: hopefully for the guys.
- 47:21Speaker 2: A little, list little of.
- 47:23Speaker 1: That and so the scene that really starts to switch things,
- 47:26Speaker 1: around because early on they've kind of got this you,
- 47:28Speaker 1: know love hate. Relationship and then Eventually, heathcliff that's a lord's,
- 47:31Speaker 1: character has emotions and feelings For Margaret robbie and he catches.
- 47:35Speaker 1: Her this is like after she spotted a couple doing
- 47:39Speaker 1: it and he was, like oh you can't watch. This it's,
- 47:40Speaker 1: like oh my, gosh she's titilated by, it you, know early,
- 47:43Speaker 1: twenties let's. Say and then he goes like in this
- 47:45Speaker 1: remote valley and he finds her just in set of cave,

- 47:52Speaker 1: so embarrassed and ashamed and disgusted and wants to run
- 47:54Speaker 1: away and a, lordie WHICH i can't imagine a man
- 47:57Speaker 1: doing this in today's day and. Age this is the

- 49:58Speaker 6: CONCERNED i, mean it's been this long you think you've
- 50:01Speaker 6: named someone. Already BUT i GUESS i understand part of
- 50:03Speaker 6: it where you're waiting for other teams to finish and
- 50:06Speaker 6: you want to scoop it up another. Guy but you,
- 50:09Speaker 6: KNOW i think with the draft coming up and free

- 50:13Speaker 6: get this short up pretty.
- 50:14Speaker 5: QUICKLY. Jd.
- 50:15Speaker 3: YEAH i think the only, reason the only UNDERSTANDING i

- 50:20Speaker 3: still in the. Playoffs it's somebody within that organization and
- 50:24Speaker 3: they just can't announce it because it's. Distracting and but
- 50:28Speaker 3: it's going to be one of those. Guys AND i
- 50:30Speaker 3: THINK i heard McFarland's name come up a few, times
- 50:32Speaker 3: so he'd be a great, pickup great ad would hurt For.
- 50:35Speaker 3: Colorado BUT i think it's got to be one of
- 50:38Speaker 3: those guys from some somewhere in the. Organizations it's one of,
- 50:42Speaker 3: them all.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Right and Now gatton no a petition from locals In

- 51:56Speaker 6: before the, GAME i was talking one of the fans
- 51:57Speaker 6: and literally one of these fans drove hours just to
- 52:01Speaker 6: be outside The Bell center and watch from the.
