- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Spanish with Fexingo. Episode 28 — can you believe it? Luna: I know, right? I've been practicing the days of the week from last time. Hoy es lunes! Lucas: Exactly! And today we're going to dive into a super important verb: 'ser'. It means 'to be' — but for things that are more permanent. Luna: Oh, like 'I am' something? Lucas: Right. So for 'I am', in Spanish it's 'soy'. Repeat after me: soy. Luna: Soy. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if I want to say 'I am from the United States', I say 'Soy de Estados Unidos'. But let's start simple. Try saying 'I am Luna'. Luna: Soy Luna. Lucas: Exactly! Soy Luna. That's your first sentence. Now for 'you are' — when talking to one person casually, we say 'eres'. So 'You are Lucas' would be 'Eres Lucas'. Luna: Eres Lucas. That's easy. Lucas: Yeah. And for he, she, or it — we use 'es'. Like, 'He is a teacher' — 'Él es profesor.' Or 'She is a student' — 'Ella es estudiante.' Luna: So if I say 'Luna es estudiante'? Lucas: Perfect. Luna es estudiante. Let's practice all three. Repeat after me: soy. Luna: Soy. Lucas: Eres. Luna: Eres. Lucas: Es. Luna: Es. Lucas: Great. Now let's make a little scene. I'll be a new friend. You ask me where I'm from. Luna: Okay. ¿De dónde eres? Lucas: Soy de España. Now you say 'You are from Spain'. Luna: Eres de España. Lucas: Yes! And if I point at the microphone and say 'It is a microphone' — 'Es un micrófono.' Luna: Es un micrófono. So 'es' is for things too. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's practice all three in a quick dialogue. I'll say 'Soy Lucas.' Then you say 'Eres Lucas.' Then I'll say 'Él es Lucas.' Luna: Okay, go. Lucas: Soy Lucas. Luna: Eres Lucas. Lucas: Él es Lucas. Luna: That was smooth. I love that. Lucas: You're doing great. Now let's try with some adjectives. 'I am tall' — 'Soy alto.' Luna: Soy alto. Lucas: But careful — if you're a woman, you say 'Soy alta.' We'll cover gender later. For now, just practice the verb. Luna: Got it. So 'Soy alta' for me. Lucas: Yes. And 'Eres alta' — you are tall. Luna: Eres alta. But you're a guy, so 'Eres alto'? Lucas: Exactly. Now let's do a quick review. What does 'soy' mean? Luna: I am. Lucas: And 'eres'? Luna: You are — casual. Lucas: And 'es'? Luna: He, she, or it is. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do one more sentence. 'Lucas is a teacher' — 'Lucas es profesor.' Say it. Luna: Lucas es profesor. Lucas: And 'I am a student' — 'Soy estudiante.' Luna: Soy estudiante. Lucas: Excellent. You're building real sentences now. Let's take a break and then come back with a quick quiz. Luna: Sounds good. Lucas: Okay, quiz time. How do you say 'You are a friend'? Luna: Eres amigo. Lucas: Close. But 'friend' is 'amigo' for male, 'amiga' for female. So 'Eres amigo' works if I'm a male friend. Perfect grammar. Luna: Oh, right. So if I'm a female friend, 'Eres amiga'? Lucas: Exactly. Now say 'She is María'. Luna: Ella es María. Lucas: Or just 'Es María.' We often drop the pronoun. So 'Es María.' Luna: Es María. That's shorter. Lucas: Yes. Now one more: 'I am from Mexico'. Luna: Soy de México. Lucas: Perfect. You've got it. So today we learned three forms of 'ser': soy, eres, es. Practice these with your name, your origin, your job. Use them every day. Luna: I will. Thanks Lucas. This is really useful. Lucas: You're welcome. And listeners, keep practicing with Fexingo. We'll be back next time with more Spanish. ¡Hasta luego! Luna: ¡Hasta luego!
