- 0:24Speaker 1: are needed in sending this little book out into the world.
- 0:28Speaker 1: It is the fourth of a series of manuals designed
- 0:30Speaker 1: to meet the public demand for a simple exposition of
- 0:33Speaker 1: Theosophical teachings. Some have complained that our literature is at
- 0:38Speaker 1: once too abstruse, too technical, and too expensive for the
- 0:42Speaker 1: ordinary reader, and it is our hope that the present
- 0:45Speaker 1: series may succeed in supplying what is a very real want.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Theosophy is not only for the learned, it is for all.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Perhaps among those who, in these little books catch their
- 0:57Speaker 1: first glimpse of its teachings, there may be a few
- 1:00Speaker 1: who will be led by them to penetrate more deeply
- 1:03Speaker 1: into its philosophy, its science, and its religion. Facing its
- 1:07Speaker 1: abstruser problems with the students zeal and the neophyte's ardor
- 1:13Speaker 1: But these manuals are not written for the eager student,
- 1:16Speaker 1: whom no initial difficulties can daunt. They are written for
- 1:19Speaker 1: the busy men and women of the workaday world, and
- 1:22Speaker 1: seek to make plains some of the great truths that
- 1:25Speaker 1: render life easier to bear and death easier to face.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Written by servants of the Masters, who are the elder
- 1:33Speaker 1: brothers of our race. They can have no other object
- 1:36Speaker 1: than to serve our fellow men Karma. Every thought of man,
- 1:45Speaker 1: upon being evolved, passes into the inner world and becomes
- 1:49Speaker 1: an active entity. By associating itself coalescing, we might term
- 1:54Speaker 1: it with an elemental that is to say, with one
- 1:57Speaker 1: of the semi intelligent forces of the kingdoms. It survives
- 2:01Speaker 1: as an active intelligence, a creature of the mind, sp
- 2:05Speaker 1: getting for a longer or shorter period proportionate with the
- 2:08Speaker 1: original intensity of the cerebral action which generated it. Thus,
- 2:13Speaker 1: a good thought is perpetuated as an active beneficent power,
- 2:17Speaker 1: an evil one as a moleficent demon. And so man
- 2:21Speaker 1: is continually peopling his current in space with a world
- 2:24Speaker 1: of his own, crowded with the offspring of his fancies, desires, impulses,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and passions. A current which reacts upon any sensitive or
- 2:33Speaker 1: nervous organization which comes in contact with it in proportion
- 2:37Speaker 1: to its dynamic intensity. The Buddhist calls it his skanda.
- 2:43Speaker 1: The Hindu gives it the name of Karma. The adept
- 2:46Speaker 1: evolves these shapes consciously. Other men throw them off unconsciously
- 2:53Speaker 1: from the occult world. Page eighty nine, ninety fourth Edition.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Poor graphic picture of the essential nature of Karma has
- 3:03Speaker 1: ever been given than in these words, taken from one
- 3:06Speaker 1: of the early letters of Master k h. If these
- 3:10Speaker 1: are clearly understood, with all their implications, the perplexities which
- 3:15Speaker 1: surround the subject will for the most part disappear, and
- 3:19Speaker 1: the main principal underlying karmic action will be grasped. They
- 3:24Speaker 1: will therefore be taken as indicating the best line of study,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and we shall begin by considering the creative powers of man.
- 3:32Speaker 1: All we need as preface is a clear conception of
- 3:35Speaker 1: the invariability of law and of the great plains in nature.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Chapter one. The invariability of law, that we live in
- 3:48Speaker 1: a realm of law, that we are surrounded by laws
- 3:51Speaker 1: that we cannot break. This is a truism. Yet, when
- 3:55Speaker 1: the fact is recognized in a real and vital way,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and when it is seen to be a fact in
- 4:01Speaker 1: the mental and moral world as much as in the
- 4:04Speaker 1: physical a certain sense of helplessness is apt to overpower us,
- 4:09Speaker 1: as though we felt ourselves in the grip of some
- 4:11Speaker 1: mighty power that, seizing us whirls us away whither it will.
- 4:17Speaker 1: The very reverse of this is, in reality the case,
- 4:21Speaker 1: for the mighty power, when it is understood, will obediently
- 4:25Speaker 1: carry us whither we will. All forces in nature can
- 4:30Speaker 1: be used in proportion as they are understood. Quote. Nature
- 4:34Speaker 1: is conquered by obedience end quote, and her resistless energies
- 4:39Speaker 1: are at our bidding. As soon as we by knowledge
- 4:42Speaker 1: to work with them and not against them. We can
- 4:45Speaker 1: choose out of her boundless stores the forces that serve
- 4:49Speaker 1: our purpose in momentum, in direction, and so on, and
- 4:53Speaker 1: their very invariability becomes the guarantee of our success. On
- 4:58Speaker 1: the invariability of life, law, depend the security of scientific experiment,
- 5:03Speaker 1: and all power of planning a result and of predicting
- 5:06Speaker 1: the future. On this, the chemist rests sure that nature
- 5:11Speaker 1: will ever respond in the same way. If he be
- 5:14Speaker 1: precise in putting his questions. A variation in his results
- 5:19Speaker 1: is taken by him as implying a change in his procedure,
- 5:22Speaker 1: not a change in nature. And so with all human
- 5:26Speaker 1: action the more it is based on knowledge, the more
- 5:29Speaker 1: secure it is in its forecastings. For all quote, accident
- 5:34Speaker 1: is the result of ignorance and is due to the
- 5:37Speaker 1: working of laws whose presence was unknown or overlooked. In
- 5:42Speaker 1: the mental and moral worlds, as much as in the physical,
- 5:45Speaker 1: results can be foreseen, planned for, calculated on nature never
- 5:51Speaker 1: betrays us. We are betrayed by our own blindness. In
- 5:55Speaker 1: all worlds, increasing knowledge means increasing power, and omniscience and
- 6:01Speaker 1: omnipotence are one That law should be as invariable in
- 6:07Speaker 1: the mental and moral worlds as in the physical is
- 6:10Speaker 1: to be expected, since the universe is the emanation of
- 6:13Speaker 1: the One, and what we call law is but the
- 6:16Speaker 1: expression of the divine nature. As there is one life
- 6:20Speaker 1: emanating all, so there is one law sustaining all the
- 6:25Speaker 1: world's rest on this rock of the divine Nature, as
- 6:29Speaker 1: on a secure, immutable foundation. End of preface and Section one,
- 6:41Speaker 1: Section two of Karma by Annie Bessant. This LibriVox recording
- 6:46Speaker 1: is in the public domain the planes of Nature. To
- 6:53Speaker 1: study the workings of Karma on the line suggested by
- 6:56Speaker 1: the Master, we must gain a clear conception of the
- 6:59Speaker 1: three lower place planes or regions of the universe and
- 7:02Speaker 1: of the principles related to them. The names given to
- 7:06Speaker 1: them indicate the state of the consciousness working on them.
- 7:10Speaker 1: In this a diagram may help us, showing the planes
- 7:13Speaker 1: with the principles related to them and the vehicles in
- 7:16Speaker 1: which a conscious entity may visit them. Diagram shashuptik plane principle,
- 7:24Speaker 1: booty vehicle, spiritual body, devachonic plane principle, manas vehicles one
- 7:35Speaker 1: mind body, two causal body, psychic or astral plane principles,
- 7:43Speaker 1: higher psychic comma, manas lower psychic comma vehicle, subtle body,
- 7:50Speaker 1: physical plane principle, linga, sharira stula, sharira vehicle, gross body,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and diagram. In practical occultism, the student learns to visit
- 8:05Speaker 1: these planes and by his own investigations to transform theory
- 8:10Speaker 1: into knowledge. The lowest vehicle, the gross body, serves the
- 8:15Speaker 1: consciousness for its work on the physical plane, and in
- 8:18Speaker 1: this the consciousness is limited within the capacities of the brain.
- 8:22Speaker 1: The term subtle body covers a variety of astrobodies, respectively,
- 8:27Speaker 1: suitable to the varying conditions of the very complicated region
- 8:30Speaker 1: indicated by the name psychic plane. On the deevichonic plane,
- 8:35Speaker 1: there are two well defined levels, the form level and
- 8:38Speaker 1: the formless level. On the lower consciousness uses an artificial body,
- 8:44Speaker 1: the Maya varupa, but the term mind body seems suitable
- 8:48Speaker 1: as indicating that the matter of which it is composed
- 8:50Speaker 1: belongs to the plane of Manas on the formless level,
- 8:54Speaker 1: the causal body must be used of the Buddhic plane.
- 8:58Speaker 1: It is needless to speak now the matter on these
- 9:03Speaker 1: plains is not the same, and speaking generally, the matter
- 9:07Speaker 1: of each plane is denser than that of the one
- 9:09Speaker 1: above it. This is according to the analogy of nature,
- 9:14Speaker 1: for evolution in its downward course, is from rare to dense,
- 9:18Speaker 1: from subtle to gross. Further, vast hierarchies of beings inhabit
- 9:24Speaker 1: these plains, ranging from the lofty intelligences of the spiritual
- 9:28Speaker 1: region to the lowest subconscious elementals of the physical world.
- 9:34Speaker 1: On every plane, spirit and matter are conjoined in every particle,
- 9:39Speaker 1: every particle having matter as its body, spirit as its life,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and all independent aggregations of particles. All separated forms of
- 9:48Speaker 1: every kind of every type are insold by these living beings,
- 9:53Speaker 1: varying in their grade. According to the grade of the form.
- 9:58Speaker 1: No form exists which is not and sold. But the
- 10:01Speaker 1: informing entity may be the loftiest intelligence, the lowest elemental,
- 10:06Speaker 1: or any of the countless hosts that range between. The
- 10:11Speaker 1: entities with which we shall presently be concerned, are chiefly
- 10:14Speaker 1: those of the psychic plane. For these give to man
- 10:17Speaker 1: his body of desire Comma rupa, his body of sensation,
- 10:22Speaker 1: as it is often called, are indeed built into its
- 10:25Speaker 1: astral matrix, and vivify his astral senses. They are, to
- 10:30Speaker 1: use the technical name the form elementals rupa devatas of
- 10:35Speaker 1: the animal world, and are the agents of the changes
- 10:38Speaker 1: which transmute vibrations into sensations. The most salient characteristic of
- 10:45Speaker 1: the comic elementals is sensation, the power of not only
- 10:48Speaker 1: answering to vibrations, but of feeling them. And the psychic
- 10:52Speaker 1: plane is crowded with these entities of varying degrees of consciousness,
- 10:56Speaker 1: who receive impacts of every kind and combine them into sensations.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Any being who possesses, then a body into which these
- 11:05Speaker 1: elementals are built, is capable of feeling, and man feels
- 11:09Speaker 1: through such a body. A man is not conscious in
- 11:12Speaker 1: the particles of his body, or even in its cells.
- 11:15Speaker 1: They have a consciousness of their own, and by this
- 11:18Speaker 1: carry on the various processes of his vegetative life. But
- 11:23Speaker 1: the man whose body they form does not share their consciousness,
- 11:27Speaker 1: does not consciously help or hinder them as they select, assimilate,
- 11:31Speaker 1: secrete builds up, and could not, at any moment so
- 11:35Speaker 1: put his consciousness into rapport with the consciousness of a
- 11:38Speaker 1: cell in his heart as to say exactly what it
- 11:40Speaker 1: was doing. His consciousness functions normally on the psychic plane,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and even in the higher psychic regions where mind is working,
- 11:49Speaker 1: it is mind intermingled with comma pure mind not functioning
- 11:53Speaker 1: on this astroplane. The astraplane is thronged with elementals, similar
- 11:59Speaker 1: to those which enter into the desire body of man,
- 12:02Speaker 1: and which also form the simpler desire body of the
- 12:05Speaker 1: lower animal. By this department of his nature, man comes
- 12:10Speaker 1: into immediate relations with these elementals, and by them he
- 12:14Speaker 1: forms links with all the objects around him that are
- 12:17Speaker 1: either attractive or repulsive to him. By his will, by
- 12:22Speaker 1: his emotions, by his desires, he influences these countless beings,
- 12:27Speaker 1: which sensitively respond to all the thrills of feeling that
- 12:30Speaker 1: he sends out in every direction. His own desire. Body
- 12:34Speaker 1: acts as the apparatus, and just as it combines the
- 12:37Speaker 1: vibrations that come from without into feelings, so does it
- 12:41Speaker 1: dissociate the feelings that arise within into vibrations. End of
- 12:47Speaker 1: Section two Section three of Karma by Annie Bessant. This
- 12:58Speaker 1: LibriVox recording in the public domain the generation of thought forms.
- 13:08Speaker 1: We are now in a position to more clearly understand
- 13:11Speaker 1: the master's words. The mind, working in its own region,
- 13:15Speaker 1: in the subtle matter of the higher psychic plane, generates
- 13:19Speaker 1: images thought forms. Imagination has very accurately been called the
- 13:24Speaker 1: creative faculty of the mind, and it is so in
- 13:27Speaker 1: a more literal sense than many may suppose who use
- 13:30Speaker 1: the phrase. This image making capacity is the characteristic power
- 13:35Speaker 1: of the mind, and a word is only a clumsy
- 13:38Speaker 1: attempt to partially represent a mental picture, an idea. A
- 13:43Speaker 1: mental image is a complicated thing and needs perhaps a
- 13:47Speaker 1: whole sentence to describe it accurately. So a salient incident
- 13:53Speaker 1: in it is seized, and the word naming this incident
- 13:56Speaker 1: imperfectly represents the whole. We say, try triangle, and the
- 14:00Speaker 1: word calls up in the hearer's mind a picture which
- 14:03Speaker 1: would need a long description if fully conveyed in words.
- 14:07Speaker 1: We do our best thinking in symbols, and then laboriously
- 14:11Speaker 1: and imperfectly summarize our symbols into words. In regions where
- 14:16Speaker 1: mind speaks to mind, there is perfect expression, far beyond
- 14:20Speaker 1: anything words may convey. Even in thought transference of a
- 14:24Speaker 1: limited kind. It is not words that are sent, but ideas.
- 14:28Speaker 1: A speaker puts into words such part of his mental
- 14:31Speaker 1: pictures as he can, and these words call up in
- 14:34Speaker 1: the hearer's mind pictures corresponding to those in the mind
- 14:37Speaker 1: of the speaker. The mind deals with the pictures, the images,
- 14:42Speaker 1: not with the words, and half the controversies and misunderstandings
- 14:46Speaker 1: that arise come about because people attach different images to
- 14:49Speaker 1: the same words, or use different words to represent the
- 14:53Speaker 1: same images. A thought form, then, is a mental image
- 14:59Speaker 1: created or molded by the mind out of the subtle
- 15:02Speaker 1: matter of the higher psychic plane in which, as above
- 15:06Speaker 1: said it works. This form, composed of the rapidly vibrating
- 15:11Speaker 1: atoms of the matter of that region, sets up vibrations
- 15:15Speaker 1: all around it. These vibrations will give rise to sensations
- 15:19Speaker 1: of sound and color in any entities adapted to translate them. Thus,
- 15:25Speaker 1: and as the thought form passes outward or sinks downward,
- 15:29Speaker 1: whichever expression may be preferred to express the transition into
- 15:33Speaker 1: the denser matter of the lower psychic regions. These vibrations
- 15:37Speaker 1: thrill out as a singing color in every direction and
- 15:41Speaker 1: call to the thought form. Whence they proceed the elementals
- 15:44Speaker 1: belonging to that color. All elementals, like all things else
- 15:49Speaker 1: in the universe, belong to one or other of the
- 15:52Speaker 1: seven primary rays, the seven primeval suns of light. The
- 15:57Speaker 1: white light breaks forth from the third lowe, the manifested
- 16:01Speaker 1: divine mind in the seven rays. The quote seven spirits
- 16:06Speaker 1: that are before the throne end quote. And each of
- 16:10Speaker 1: these rays has its seven subrays, and so onwards insequential subdivisions. Hence,
- 16:17Speaker 1: amid the endless differentiations that make up a universe, there
- 16:21Speaker 1: are elementals belonging to the various subdivisions, and they are
- 16:26Speaker 1: communicated with in a color language grounded on the color
- 16:30Speaker 1: to which they belong. This is why the real knowledge
- 16:33Speaker 1: of sounds and colors and numbers number underlying both sound
- 16:38Speaker 1: and color has ever been so carefully guarded, for the
- 16:41Speaker 1: will speaks to the elementals by these, and knowledge gives
- 16:46Speaker 1: power to control Master K. H. Speaks very plainly on
- 16:52Speaker 1: this color language. He says, quote, how could you make
- 16:57Speaker 1: yourself understood? Command? In fact, those semi intelligent forces whose
- 17:03Speaker 1: means of communicating with us are not through spoken words,
- 17:06Speaker 1: but through sounds and colors, in correlations between the vibrations
- 17:11Speaker 1: of the two. For sound, light and color are the
- 17:15Speaker 1: main factors informing those grades of intelligences, these beings of
- 17:20Speaker 1: whose very existence you have no conception, nor are you
- 17:23Speaker 1: allowed to believe in them. Atheists and Christians, materialists and spiritualists,
- 17:30Speaker 1: all bringing forward their respective arguments against such a belief,
- 17:34Speaker 1: Science objecting stronger than either of these, to such a
- 17:38Speaker 1: degrading superstition. End Occult World, page one hundred. Students of
- 17:46Speaker 1: the past may remember obscure allusions now and again made
- 17:50Speaker 1: to a language of colors. They may recall the fact
- 17:54Speaker 1: that in ancient Egypt, sacred manuscripts were written in colors,
- 17:59Speaker 1: and that mistake made in the copying were punished with death.
- 18:04Speaker 1: But I must not run down this fascinating byway. We
- 18:07Speaker 1: are only concerned with the fact that elementals are addressed
- 18:10Speaker 1: by colors, and that color words are as intelligible to
- 18:15Speaker 1: them as spoken words are to men. The hue of
- 18:20Speaker 1: the singing color depends on the nature of the motive
- 18:23Speaker 1: inspiring the generator of the thought form. If the motive
- 18:27Speaker 1: be pure, loving, beneficent in its character, the color produced
- 18:32Speaker 1: will summon to the thought form an elemental, which will
- 18:36Speaker 1: take on the characteristics impressed on the form by the
- 18:39Speaker 1: motive and act along the line thus traced. This elemental
- 18:43Speaker 1: enters into the thought form, playing to it the part
- 18:46Speaker 1: of a soul, and thus an independent entity is made
- 18:49Speaker 1: in the astral world, an entity of a beneficent character.
- 18:54Speaker 1: If the motive, on the other hand, be impure, revengeful,
- 18:58Speaker 1: moleficent in its character, the color produced will summon to
- 19:02Speaker 1: the thought form an elemental, which will equally take on
- 19:05Speaker 1: the characteristics impressed on the form by the motive and
- 19:09Speaker 1: act along the line thus traced. In this case, also
- 19:12Speaker 1: the elemental enters into the thought form, playing to it
- 19:16Speaker 1: the part of a soul, and thus making an independent
- 19:19Speaker 1: entity in the astral world an entity of a maleficent character.
- 19:24Speaker 1: For example, an angry thought will cause a flash of red,
- 19:29Speaker 1: the thought form vibrating so as to produce red. That
- 19:33Speaker 1: flash of red is a summons to the elementals, and
- 19:36Speaker 1: they sweep in the direction of the summoner, and one
- 19:39Speaker 1: of them enters into the thought form, which gives it
- 19:42Speaker 1: an independent activity of a destructive, disintegrating type. Men are
- 19:48Speaker 1: continually talking in this color language, quite unconsciously, and thus
- 19:53Speaker 1: calling round them these swarms of elementals, who take up
- 19:56Speaker 1: their abodes in the various thought forms provided. Thus it
- 20:00Speaker 1: is that a man peoples his current in space with
- 20:03Speaker 1: a world of his own, crowded with the offspring of
- 20:07Speaker 1: his fancies, desires, impulses and passions, Angels and demons of
- 20:12Speaker 1: our own, creating throng round us on every side, makers
- 20:17Speaker 1: of weal and woe to others, bringers of weal and
- 20:21Speaker 1: woe to ourselves. Verily, a karmic host. Clairvoyance can see
- 20:27Speaker 1: flashes of color constantly changing in the aura that surrounds
- 20:31Speaker 1: every person, each thought, each feeling, thus translating itself in
- 20:35Speaker 1: the astral world visible to the astral sight. Persons somewhat
- 20:41Speaker 1: more developed than the ordinary clairvoyant can also see the
- 20:44Speaker 1: thought forms and can see the effects produced by the
- 20:47Speaker 1: flashes of color among the hordes of elementals. End of
- 20:53Speaker 1: section three, Section four of Karma by Antibescent. This LibriVox
- 21:05Speaker 1: recording is in the public domain activity of thought forms.
- 21:13Speaker 1: The life period of these insult thought forms depends first
- 21:16Speaker 1: on their initial intensity, on the energy bestowed upon them
- 21:20Speaker 1: by their human progenitor, and secondly on the nutriment supplied
- 21:24Speaker 1: to them after their generation by the repetition of the thought,
- 21:28Speaker 1: either by him or by others. Their life may be
- 21:33Speaker 1: continually reinforced by this repetition, and a thought which is
- 21:38Speaker 1: brooded over which forms the subject of repeated meditation, acquires
- 21:43Speaker 1: great stability of form on the psychic plane. So again,
- 21:48Speaker 1: thought forms of a similar character are attracted to each
- 21:52Speaker 1: other and mutually strengthen each other, making a form of
- 21:56Speaker 1: great energy and intensity active. In this astral world, thought
- 22:02Speaker 1: forms are connected with their progenitor by what, for want
- 22:05Speaker 1: of a better phrase, we must call a magnetic tie.
- 22:09Speaker 1: They react upon him, producing an impression which leads to
- 22:13Speaker 1: their reproduction. And in the case mentioned above, where a
- 22:16Speaker 1: thought form is reinforced by repetition, a very definite habit
- 22:20Speaker 1: of thought may be set up. A mold may be
- 22:23Speaker 1: formed into which thought will readily flow, helpful if it
- 22:27Speaker 1: be of a very lofty character, as a noble ideal,
- 22:31Speaker 1: but for the most part cramping in a hindrance to
- 22:34Speaker 1: mental growth. We may pause for a moment on this
- 22:39Speaker 1: formation of habit, as it shows in miniature in a
- 22:42Speaker 1: very helpful way, the working of karma. Let us suppose
- 22:46Speaker 1: we could take ready made a mind with no past
- 22:49Speaker 1: activity behind it. An impossible thing, of course, but the
- 22:53Speaker 1: supposition will bring out the special point needed. Such a
- 22:57Speaker 1: mind might be imagined to work with perfect freedom and spontaneity,
- 23:02Speaker 1: and to produce a thought form. It proceeds to repeat
- 23:06Speaker 1: this many times until a habit of thought is made
- 23:09Speaker 1: a definite habit, so that the mind will unconsciously slip
- 23:12Speaker 1: into that thought. Its energies will flow into it without
- 23:16Speaker 1: any consciously selective action of the will. Let us further
- 23:21Speaker 1: suppose that the mind comes to disapprove this habit of
- 23:24Speaker 1: thought and finds it a clog on its progress. Originally
- 23:29Speaker 1: due to the spontaneous action of the mind and facilitating
- 23:32Speaker 1: the outpouring of mental energy by providing for it a
- 23:35Speaker 1: ready made channel, it has now become a limitation. But
- 23:39Speaker 1: if it is to be gotten rid of, it can
- 23:41Speaker 1: only be by the renewed spontaneous action of the mind
- 23:46Speaker 1: directed to the exhaustion and final destruction of this living fetter.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Here we have a little ideal karmic cycle rapidly run through.
- 23:57Speaker 1: The free mind makes a habit, and is then obliged
- 24:00Speaker 1: to work within that limitation. But it retains its freedom
- 24:04Speaker 1: within the limitation, and can work against it from within
- 24:07Speaker 1: till it wears it out. Of course, we never find
- 24:11Speaker 1: ourselves initially free, for we come into the world encumbered
- 24:15Speaker 1: with these fetters of our own past making. But the process,
- 24:18Speaker 1: as regards each separate fetter, runs the above round. The
- 24:23Speaker 1: mind forges it, wears it, and while wearing it, can
- 24:27Speaker 1: file it through. Thought forms may also be directed by
- 24:32Speaker 1: their progenitor towards particular persons who may be helped or
- 24:35Speaker 1: injured by them. According to the nature of the insoling elemental,
- 24:40Speaker 1: it is no mere poetic fancy that good wishes, prayers,
- 24:44Speaker 1: and loving thoughts are of value to those to whom
- 24:46Speaker 1: they are sent. They form a protective host, encircling the
- 24:50Speaker 1: beloved and ward off many an evil influence and danger.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Not only does a man generate and send forth his
- 24:59Speaker 1: own thought form, but he also serves as a magnet
- 25:02Speaker 1: to draw towards himself the thought forms of others from
- 25:05Speaker 1: the astroplane around him of the classes to which his
- 25:08Speaker 1: own and sold thought forms belong. He may thus attract
- 25:12Speaker 1: to himself large reinforcements of energy from outside, and it
- 25:16Speaker 1: lies within himself. Whether these forces that he draws into
- 25:20Speaker 1: his own being from the external world shall be of
- 25:23Speaker 1: a good or of an evil kind. If a man's
- 25:27Speaker 1: thoughts are pure and noble, he will attract around him
- 25:30Speaker 1: hosts of beneficent entities, and may sometimes wonder whence comes
- 25:34Speaker 1: to him the power for achievement that seems, and truly
- 25:37Speaker 1: seems to be so much beyond his own. Similarly, a
- 25:42Speaker 1: man of foul and base thoughts attracts to himself hosts
- 25:46Speaker 1: of maleficent entities, and by this added energy for evil
- 25:50Speaker 1: commits crimes that astonish him. In the retrospect. Some devil
- 25:55Speaker 1: must have tempted me, he will cry, And truly these
- 25:58Speaker 1: demoniac forces called to him by his own evil, adds
- 26:02Speaker 1: strength to it from without. The elementals in soling thought forms,
- 26:08Speaker 1: whether these be good or bad, link themselves to the
- 26:10Speaker 1: elementals in the man's desired body, into those in soling
- 26:14Speaker 1: his own thought forms, and thus work in him, though
- 26:18Speaker 1: coming from without. But for this they must find entities
- 26:22Speaker 1: of their own kind with which to link themselves, else
- 26:26Speaker 1: they can exercise no power, and further elementals in an
- 26:29Speaker 1: opposite kind of thought form will repel them, and the
- 26:33Speaker 1: good man will drive back by his very atmosphere, his aura,
- 26:37Speaker 1: all that is foul and cruel. It surrounds him as
- 26:41Speaker 1: a protective wall and keeps evil away from him. There
- 26:46Speaker 1: is another form of elemental activity that brings about widespread
- 26:49Speaker 1: results and cannot therefore be excluded from this preliminary survey
- 26:53Speaker 1: of the forces that go to make up karma, like
- 26:57Speaker 1: those just dealt with. This is included in the statement
- 27:00Speaker 1: that these thought forms people the current which reacts upon
- 27:04Speaker 1: any sensitive or nervous organization which comes in contact with it,
- 27:09Speaker 1: in proportion to its dynamic intensity, to some extent, it
- 27:13Speaker 1: must effect almost everyone, though the more sensitive the organization,
- 27:18Speaker 1: the greater the effect. Elementals have a tendency to be
- 27:21Speaker 1: attracted towards others of a similar kind, aggregating together in classes,
- 27:27Speaker 1: being in a sense gregarious on their own account. And
- 27:30Speaker 1: when a man sends out a thought form, it not
- 27:33Speaker 1: only keeps up a magnetic link with him, but is
- 27:36Speaker 1: drawn towards other thought forms of a similar type, and
- 27:39Speaker 1: these congregating together on the astroplane form a good or
- 27:43Speaker 1: evil force, as the case, may be embodied in a
- 27:47Speaker 1: kind of collective entity to These aggregations of similar thought
- 27:52Speaker 1: forms are due to characteristics often strongly marked of family, local,
- 27:57Speaker 1: and national opinion, form a kind of astral atmosphere through
- 28:02Speaker 1: which everything is seen and which colors that to which
- 28:05Speaker 1: the gaze is directed, and they react on the desire
- 28:08Speaker 1: bodies of the persons included in the group concerned, setting
- 28:12Speaker 1: up in them responsive vibrations. Such family, local, or national
- 28:17Speaker 1: karmic surroundings largely modify the individual's activity and limit, to
- 28:22Speaker 1: a very great extent, his power of expressing the capacities
- 28:26Speaker 1: he may possess. Suppose an idea should be presented to him,
- 28:31Speaker 1: he can only see it through this atmosphere that surrounds him,
- 28:34Speaker 1: which must color it and may seriously distort. Here, then
- 28:39Speaker 1: are karmic limitations of a far reaching kind that will
- 28:42Speaker 1: need further consideration. The influence of these congregated elementals is
- 28:48Speaker 1: not confined to that which they exercise over men through
- 28:51Speaker 1: their desire bodies. When this collective entity, as I have
- 28:56Speaker 1: called it, is made up of thought forms of a
- 28:58Speaker 1: destructive type, the elementals in soling These act as a
- 29:02Speaker 1: disruptive energy, and they often work much havoc on the
- 29:05Speaker 1: physical plane, a vortex of disintegrating energies. They are the
- 29:11Speaker 1: fruitful sources of quote unquote accidents of natural convulsions, of storms, cyclones, hurricanes, earthquakes, bloods.
- 29:22Speaker 1: These karmic results will also need some further consideration. End
- 29:28Speaker 1: of section four, Section five of Karma by anibscent. This
- 29:38Speaker 1: LibriVox recording is in the public domain the making of
- 29:43Speaker 1: karma in principle. Having thus realized the relation between man
- 29:48Speaker 1: and the elemental kingdom and the molding energies of the
- 29:52Speaker 1: mind verily creative energies in that they call into being
- 29:56Speaker 1: these living forms that have been described, we are in
- 29:59Speaker 1: a position to at LEAs please partially understand something of
- 30:01Speaker 1: the generation and working out of karma during a single
- 30:04Speaker 1: life period. A life period I say, rather than a life,
- 30:09Speaker 1: because a life means too little if it be used
- 30:12Speaker 1: in the ordinary sense of a single incarnation, and it
- 30:16Speaker 1: means too much if it be used for the whole life,
- 30:19Speaker 1: made up of many stages in the physical body and
- 30:21Speaker 1: of many stages without it. By life period I mean
- 30:25Speaker 1: a little cycle of human existence with its physical astral
- 30:29Speaker 1: and devotonic experiences, including its return to the threshold of
- 30:34Speaker 1: the physical the four distinct stages through which the soul
- 30:37Speaker 1: passes in order to complete its cycle. These stages are
- 30:41Speaker 1: retrodden over and over again during the journey of the
- 30:45Speaker 1: eternal pilgrim through our present humanity, and however much the
- 30:49Speaker 1: experiences in each such period may vary both as to
- 30:53Speaker 1: quantity and quality, the period will include these four stages
- 30:57Speaker 1: for the average human being and none. It is important
- 31:03Speaker 1: to realize that the residence outside the physical body is
- 31:06Speaker 1: far more prolonged than the residence in it, and the
- 31:10Speaker 1: workings of karmic law will be but poorly understood unless
- 31:14Speaker 1: the activity of the soul in the non physical condition
- 31:17Speaker 1: be studied. Let us recall the words of a master
- 31:21Speaker 1: pointing out that the life out of the body is
- 31:24Speaker 1: the real one quote the vedantins acknowledging two kinds of
- 31:29Speaker 1: conscious existence, the terrestrial and the spiritual, point only to
- 31:33Speaker 1: the latter as an undoubted actuality. As to the terrestrial life,
- 31:39Speaker 1: owing to its changeability and shortness, it is nothing but
- 31:42Speaker 1: an illusion of our senses. Our life and the spiritual
- 31:46Speaker 1: spheres must be thought in actuality because it is there
- 31:49Speaker 1: that lives our endless, never changing immortal eye, the Sutratma.
- 31:56Speaker 1: This is why we call the posthumous life the only
- 31:59Speaker 1: reality and the terrestrial one, including the personality itself only
- 32:04Speaker 1: imaginary Lucifer, October eighteen ninety two. Life and death during
- 32:13Speaker 1: earth life. The activity of the soul is most directly
- 32:16Speaker 1: manifested in the creation of the thought forms already described.
- 32:21Speaker 1: But in order to follow out with any approach to
- 32:24Speaker 1: exactitude the workings of karma, we must now analyze further
- 32:28Speaker 1: the term thought form and add some considerations necessarily omitted
- 32:33Speaker 1: in the general conception first presented. The soul working as
- 32:39Speaker 1: mind creates a mental image, the primary thought form. Let
- 32:44Speaker 1: us take the term mental image to mean exclusively this
- 32:48Speaker 1: immediate creation of the mind, and henceforth restrict this term
- 32:52Speaker 1: to this initial stage of what is generally and broadly
- 32:55Speaker 1: spoken of as a thought form. This mental image means
- 33:00Speaker 1: attached to its creator, part of the content of his consciousness.
- 33:05Speaker 1: It is a living, vibrating form of subtle matter, the
- 33:09Speaker 1: word thought but not yet spoken, conceived but not yet
- 33:14Speaker 1: made flesh. Let the reader concentrate his mind for a
- 33:19Speaker 1: few moments on this mental image and obtain a distinct
- 33:23Speaker 1: notion of it, isolated from all else, apart from all
- 33:27Speaker 1: the results it is going to produce on other planes
- 33:30Speaker 1: than its own. It forms, as just said, part of
- 33:34Speaker 1: the content of the consciousness of its creator, part of
- 33:37Speaker 1: his inalienable property. It cannot be separated from him. He
- 33:42Speaker 1: carries it with him during his earthly life, carries it
- 33:46Speaker 1: with him through the gateway of death, carries it with
- 33:49Speaker 1: him in the regions beyond death. And if during his
- 33:52Speaker 1: upward traveling through those regions he himself passes into air
- 33:57Speaker 1: too rarefied for it to endure behind the denser matter
- 34:01Speaker 1: built into it, carrying on the mental matrix the essential form.
- 34:06Speaker 1: On his return to the grosser region, the matter of
- 34:10Speaker 1: that plane is again built into the mental matrix, and
- 34:13Speaker 1: the appropriate denser form is reproduced. This mental image may
- 34:19Speaker 1: remain sleeping as it were for long periods, but it
- 34:22Speaker 1: may be reawakened and revivified every fresh impulse from its
- 34:27Speaker 1: creator from its progeny dealt with below from entities of
- 34:32Speaker 1: the same type. As its progeny increases its life energy
- 34:36Speaker 1: and modifies its form, it evolves, as we shall see,
- 34:42Speaker 1: according to definite laws and the aggregation of these mental
- 34:45Speaker 1: images makes the character the outer mirrors the inner, and
- 34:51Speaker 1: as cells aggregate into the tissues of the body and
- 34:54Speaker 1: are often much modified in the process, so do these
- 34:57Speaker 1: mental images aggregate into the characteristic of the mind and
- 35:01Speaker 1: often undergo much modification. The study of the working out
- 35:06Speaker 1: of karma will throw much light on these changes. Many
- 35:11Speaker 1: materials may enter into the making of these mental images
- 35:14Speaker 1: by the creative powers of the soul. It may be
- 35:17Speaker 1: stimulated into activity by desire comma, and may shape the
- 35:22Speaker 1: image according to the promptings of passion or of appetite.
- 35:26Speaker 1: It may be self motivated to a noble ideal and
- 35:29Speaker 1: mold the image accordingly. It may be led by purely
- 35:33Speaker 1: intellectual concepts and form the image thereafter. But lofty or base,
- 35:39Speaker 1: intellectual or passional, serviceable or mischievous, divine or beast steal.
- 35:45Speaker 1: It is always in man a mental image the product
- 35:49Speaker 1: of the creative soul, and on its existence, individual karma depends.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Without this mental image, there can be no individual karma
- 36:00Speaker 1: linking life period to life period. The monostic quality must
- 36:05Speaker 1: be present to afford the permanent element in which individual
- 36:08Speaker 1: karma can Inhere, the non presence of manus in the mineral,
- 36:14Speaker 1: vegetable and animal kingdoms has as its corollary the non
- 36:18Speaker 1: generation of individual karma, stretching through death to rebirth. Let
- 36:26Speaker 1: us now consider the primary thought form in relation to
- 36:29Speaker 1: the secondary thought form, the thought form pure and simple,
- 36:33Speaker 1: in relation to the insoled thought form, the mental image
- 36:37Speaker 1: in relation to the astro mental image, or the thought
- 36:41Speaker 1: form in the lower astral plane. How is this produced
- 36:45Speaker 1: and what is it? To use the symbol employed above,
- 36:49Speaker 1: It is produced by the word thought becoming the word outspoken.
- 36:54Speaker 1: The soul breathes out the thought, and the sound makes
- 36:57Speaker 1: form in astral matter. As the ideas in the universal
- 37:02Speaker 1: mind become the manifested universe when they are outbreathed, so
- 37:06Speaker 1: do these mental images in the human mind, when outbreathed,
- 37:11Speaker 1: become the manifested universe of their creator. He peoples his
- 37:16Speaker 1: current in space with a world of his own. The
- 37:20Speaker 1: vibrations of the mental image set up similar vibrations in
- 37:25Speaker 1: the denser astral matter, and these cause the secondary thought form,
- 37:29Speaker 1: what I have called the astro mental image. The mental
- 37:34Speaker 1: image itself remains, as has been already said, in the
- 37:37Speaker 1: consciousness of its creator, but its vibrations passing outside that
- 37:42Speaker 1: consciousness reproduce its form in the denser matter of the
- 37:46Speaker 1: lower astral plane. This is the form that affords the
- 37:50Speaker 1: casing for a portion of elemental energy, specializing it for
- 37:54Speaker 1: the time that the form persists. Since the manassic element
- 37:59Speaker 1: in the form gives a touch of individuality to that
- 38:02Speaker 1: which insuls it, how marvelous and how illuminating are the
- 38:06Speaker 1: correspondences in nature. This is the active entity spoken of
- 38:12Speaker 1: in the Master's description, and it is this astro mental
- 38:16Speaker 1: image that ranges over the astral plane, keeping up with
- 38:20Speaker 1: its progenitor, the magnetic tie spoken of, reacting on its parent,
- 38:26Speaker 1: the mental image, and acting also on others. The life
- 38:30Speaker 1: period of an astromenttal image may be long or short
- 38:34Speaker 1: according to circumstances, and its perishing does not affect the
- 38:38Speaker 1: persistence of its parent. Any fresh impulse given to the
- 38:42Speaker 1: latter will cause it to generate afresh its astral counterpart.
- 38:46Speaker 1: As each repetition of a word produces a new form.
- 38:52Speaker 1: The vibrations of the mental image do not only pass
- 38:55Speaker 1: downwards to the lower astral plane, but they pass upwards
- 38:59Speaker 1: also into the spiritual plane above it. Footnote these words
- 39:05Speaker 1: downwards and upwards are very misleading. The planes, of course,
- 39:09Speaker 1: interpenetrate each other end footnote. And as the vibrations cause
- 39:15Speaker 1: a denser form on the lower plane, so do they
- 39:18Speaker 1: generate a far subtler form. Dare I call it form?
- 39:22Speaker 1: It is no form to us on the higher In
- 39:25Speaker 1: the Akasha the world stuff emanated from the logos itself.
- 39:31Speaker 1: The Akasha is the storehouse of all forms, the treasure
- 39:35Speaker 1: house whereinto are poured from the infinite wealth of the
- 39:38Speaker 1: universal mind, the rich stores of all the ideas that
- 39:42Speaker 1: are to be bodied forth in a given cosmos. Therein
- 39:47Speaker 1: too also enter the vibrations from the cosmos, from all
- 39:51Speaker 1: the thoughts of all intelligences, from all the desires of
- 39:54Speaker 1: all comic entities, from all the actions performed on every
- 39:59Speaker 1: plane by all all these make their respective impressions be
- 40:04Speaker 1: to us formless, but to lofty spiritual intelligences the formed
- 40:09Speaker 1: images of all happenings. And these akashak images, as we
- 40:14Speaker 1: will henceforth call them, abide forevermore and are the true
- 40:18Speaker 1: Karmic records, the book of the Lapeika that may be
- 40:23Speaker 1: read by any who possess the quote opened eye of
- 40:27Speaker 1: Dongma secret doctrine. It is the reflection of these acacic
- 40:33Speaker 1: images that may be thrown upon the screen of astral
- 40:36Speaker 1: matter by the action of the trained attention, as a
- 40:40Speaker 1: picture may be thrown on a screen from a slide
- 40:42Speaker 1: in a magic lantern, so that a scene from the
- 40:45Speaker 1: past may be reproduced in all its living reality, correct
- 40:49Speaker 1: in every detail of its far off happening. For in
- 40:53Speaker 1: the akashak records it exists imprinted there once for all,
- 40:57Speaker 1: and a fleeting living picture of any page of these
- 41:00Speaker 1: records can be made at pleasure, dramatized on the astral plane,
- 41:05Speaker 1: and lived in by the trained seer. If this imperfect
- 41:09Speaker 1: description be followed by the reader, he will be able
- 41:12Speaker 1: to form for himself some faint idea of karma in
- 41:16Speaker 1: its aspect. As cause in the Akasha will be pictured
- 41:21Speaker 1: the mental image created by a soul inseparable from it,
- 41:25Speaker 1: then the astromntal image produced by it, the active and
- 41:29Speaker 1: souled creature, ranging the astroplane and producing innumerable effects, all
- 41:35Speaker 1: accurately pictured in connection with it, and therefore traceable to
- 41:39Speaker 1: it and through it to its parent. Each such thread
- 41:43Speaker 1: spun as it were, out of its own substance by
- 41:46Speaker 1: the astro mental image, as a spider spins its web,
- 41:50Speaker 1: being recognizable by its own shade of color. And however
- 41:54Speaker 1: many such threads may be woven into an effect, each
- 41:58Speaker 1: thread is distinguishable and is traceable to its original fourth giver,
- 42:03Speaker 1: the soul that generated the mental image. Thus, for our clumsy,
- 42:09Speaker 1: earth bound intelligences in miserably inadequate language, we may figure
- 42:14Speaker 1: forth the way in which individual responsibility is seen at
- 42:18Speaker 1: a glance by the great lords of Karma, the administrators
- 42:22Speaker 1: of karmic law, the full responsibility of the soul for
- 42:25Speaker 1: the mental image it creates, and the partial responsibility for
- 42:29Speaker 1: its far reaching effects, greater or less as each effect
- 42:33Speaker 1: has other karmic threads entering into its causation. Thus also
- 42:39Speaker 1: may be understand why motive plays a part so predominant
- 42:43Speaker 1: in the working out of karma, and why actions are
- 42:46Speaker 1: so relatively subordinate in their generative energy. Why karma works
- 42:51Speaker 1: out on each plane according to its constituents, and yet
- 42:55Speaker 1: links the planes together by the continuity of its thread.
- 43:00Speaker 1: When the illuminating concepts of the Wisdom religion shed their
- 43:04Speaker 1: flood of light over the world, dispersing its obscurity and
- 43:08Speaker 1: revealing the absolute justice which is working under all the
- 43:12Speaker 1: apparent incongruities, inequalities, and accidents of life. Is it any
- 43:17Speaker 1: wonder that our hearts should go out in gratitude unspeakable
- 43:21Speaker 1: to the great ones. Blessed be they who hold up
- 43:25Speaker 1: the torch of truth in the murky darkness and free
- 43:28Speaker 1: us from the tension that was straining us to breaking point,
- 43:32Speaker 1: the helpless agony of witnessing wrongs that seemed irremediable, the
- 43:37Speaker 1: hopelessness of justice, the despair of love. Ye are not bound.
- 43:45Speaker 1: The soul of things is sweet. The heart of being
- 43:48Speaker 1: is celestial rest. Stronger than woe is will. That which
- 43:53Speaker 1: was good doth pass to better best. Such is the
- 43:58Speaker 1: law which moves to righteousness, which none at last can
- 44:02Speaker 1: turn aside or stay. The heart of it is love,
- 44:06Speaker 1: The end of it is peace and consummation sweet obey.
- 44:14Speaker 1: We may perhaps gain in clearness if we tabulate the
- 44:17Speaker 1: threefold results of the activity of the soul that go
- 44:20Speaker 1: to the making up of karma as cause regarded in
- 44:24Speaker 1: principle rather than in detail. Thus we have during a
- 44:28Speaker 1: life period table man creates on spiritual plane material akasha
- 44:38Speaker 1: result acacic images forming karmic record. Man creates on psychic
- 44:45Speaker 1: plane material higher astral result mental images remaining in creator's
- 44:52Speaker 1: consciousness material lower astral result, astro mental images, active entities
- 45:01Speaker 1: on psychic plane. End table. The results of these will
- 45:07Speaker 1: be tendencies, capacities, activities, opportunities, environment, etc. Chiefly in future
- 45:15Speaker 1: life periods worked out in accordance with definite laws. End
- 45:22Speaker 1: of Section five. Section six of Karma by Anni Bessant.
- 45:33Speaker 1: The LibriVox recording is in the public domain the making
- 45:38Speaker 1: of Karma in detail, the soul in men, the ago.
- 45:44Speaker 1: The maker of Karma must be recognized by the student
- 45:47Speaker 1: as a growing entity, a living individual who increases in
- 45:52Speaker 1: wisdom and in mental stature as he treads the path
- 45:55Speaker 1: of his Aonian evolution. And the fundamental identity of the
- 46:00Speaker 1: higher and lower manas must be constantly kept in mind.
- 46:05Speaker 1: For convenience sake, we distinguish between them, but the difference
- 46:09Speaker 1: is a difference of functioning activity, and not of nature.
- 46:14Speaker 1: The higher manas is Manus working on the spiritual plane,
- 46:18Speaker 1: in possession of its full consciousness of its own past.
- 46:22Speaker 1: The lower monas is manus working on the psychic or
- 46:25Speaker 1: astral plane, veiled in astral matter, vehicled in comma, and
- 46:31Speaker 1: with all its activities intermingled with and colored by the
- 46:35Speaker 1: desired nature. It is to a great extent blinded by
- 46:39Speaker 1: the astral matter that veils it, and is in possession
- 46:42Speaker 1: only of a portion of the total monostic consciousness, this
- 46:47Speaker 1: portion consisting for the vast majority of a limited selection
- 46:52Speaker 1: from the more striking experiences of the One incarnation than
- 46:56Speaker 1: in progress for the practical pers purposes of life. As
- 47:01Speaker 1: seen by most people, the lower Manas is the eye
- 47:05Speaker 1: and is what we term the personal Ago. The voice
- 47:09Speaker 1: of conscience, vaguely and confusedly regarded as supernatural as the
- 47:15Speaker 1: voice of God, is for them the only manifestation of
- 47:19Speaker 1: the Higher Manus on the psychic plane, and they quite
- 47:22Speaker 1: rightly regard it as authoritative. However mistaken they may be
- 47:26Speaker 1: as to its nature. But the student must realize that
- 47:30Speaker 1: the lower Manas is one with the Higher, as the
- 47:33Speaker 1: ray is one with its sun. The sun Manus shines
- 47:37Speaker 1: ever in the heaven of the spiritual plane. The ray
- 47:41Speaker 1: Manas penetrates the psychic plane. But if they be regarded
- 47:45Speaker 1: as two otherwise than for convenience in distinguishing their functioning,
- 47:50Speaker 1: hopeless confusion will arise. The Ago, then, is a growing
- 47:57Speaker 1: entity and increasing quantity. The ray sent down is like
- 48:01Speaker 1: a hand plunged into water to seize some object, and
- 48:05Speaker 1: then withdrawn, holding the object in its grasp. The increase
- 48:11Speaker 1: in the ago depends on the value of the objects
- 48:13Speaker 1: gathered by its outstretched hand, and the importance of all
- 48:17Speaker 1: its work. When the ray is withdrawn is limited and
- 48:20Speaker 1: conditioned by the experience is gathered while that ray has
- 48:23Speaker 1: been functioning on the psychic plane. It is as though
- 48:28Speaker 1: a laborer when out into a field, toiling in rain
- 48:31Speaker 1: and in sunshine, in cold and in heat, returning home
- 48:35Speaker 1: at night. But the laborer is also the proprietor, and
- 48:40Speaker 1: all the results of his labor fill his own granaries
- 48:43Speaker 1: and enriches own store. Each personal ago is the immediately
- 48:48Speaker 1: effective part of the continuing or individual ago, representing it
- 48:54Speaker 1: in the lower world, and necessarily more or less developed
- 48:57Speaker 1: according to the stage at which the ago as a
- 49:00Speaker 1: totality or an individual has arrived. If this be clearly understood,
- 49:07Speaker 1: the sense of injustice to the personal ago in its
- 49:10Speaker 1: succession to its karmic inheritance, often felt as a difficulty
- 49:15Speaker 1: by the young student of theosophy, will disappear, for it
- 49:19Speaker 1: will be realized that the ago that makes the karma
- 49:22Speaker 1: reaps the karma. The laborer that sowed the seed gathers
- 49:26Speaker 1: in the harvest. Though the clothes in which he worked
- 49:29Speaker 1: as sower may have worn out during the interval between
- 49:32Speaker 1: the sowing and the reaping. The AGO's astral garments have
- 49:37Speaker 1: also fallen to pieces between seed time and harvest, and
- 49:41Speaker 1: he reaps in a new suit of clothes. But it
- 49:44Speaker 1: is he who sowed and who reaps. And if he
- 49:48Speaker 1: sowed but little seed, or seed badly chosen, it is
- 49:52Speaker 1: he who will find but a poor harvest. When as
- 49:55Speaker 1: reaper he goeth forth in the early stages of the
- 49:59Speaker 1: a jago's growth, his progress will be extremely slow, for
- 50:04Speaker 1: he will be led hither and thither by desire following
- 50:07Speaker 1: attractions on the physical plane, the mental images he generates
- 50:12Speaker 1: will be mostly of the passional class, and hence the
- 50:15Speaker 1: astro mental images will be violent and short lived rather
- 50:20Speaker 1: than strong and far reaching. According as monostic elements enter
- 50:26Speaker 1: into the composition of the mental image, will be the
- 50:29Speaker 1: endurance of the astromenttal. Steady sustained thought will form clearly
- 50:35Speaker 1: defined mental images and correspondingly strong and enduring astro mental images,
- 50:41Speaker 1: and there will be a distinct purpose in the life,
- 50:44Speaker 1: a clearly recognized ideal to which the mind is constantly
- 50:48Speaker 1: recurring and on which it continually dwells. This mental image
- 50:54Speaker 1: will become a dominating influence in the mental life, and
- 50:57Speaker 1: the energies of the soul will be largely directed by it.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Let us now study the making of karma by way
- 51:05Speaker 1: of the mental image. During a man's life, he forms
- 51:09Speaker 1: an innumerable assemblage of mental images. Some are strong, clear,
- 51:15Speaker 1: continually reinforced by repeated mental impulses. Others are weak, vague,
- 51:21Speaker 1: just formed and then, as it were, forsaken by the mind.
- 51:25Speaker 1: At death, the soul finds it self possessed of myriads
- 51:29Speaker 1: of these mental images, and they vary in character as
- 51:32Speaker 1: well as in strength and definiteness. Some are of spiritual aspirations,
- 51:39Speaker 1: longings to be of service, gropings after knowledge, vows of
- 51:44Speaker 1: self dedication to the higher life. Some are purely intellectual,
- 51:49Speaker 1: clear gems of thought, receptacles of the results of deep study.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Some are emotional and passional breathing, love, compassion, tenderness, devotion, anger, ambition, pride, greed.
- 52:05Speaker 1: Some are from bodily appetites stimulated by uncurbed desire and
- 52:10Speaker 1: represent thoughts of gluttony, drunkenness, sensuality. Each soul has its
- 52:17Speaker 1: own consciousness crowded with these mental images. The outcome of
- 52:22Speaker 1: its mental life not one thought, however, fleeting, but is
- 52:26Speaker 1: there represented the astro mental images may in many cases
- 52:31Speaker 1: long have perished, may have had strength enough to endure
- 52:35Speaker 1: but for a few hours, but the mental images remain
- 52:39Speaker 1: among the possessions of the soul. Not one is lacking.
- 52:44Speaker 1: All these mental images the soul carries away with it
- 52:47Speaker 1: when it passes through death into the astral world. The
- 52:53Speaker 1: Kama loca or place of desire is divided into many strata,
- 52:58Speaker 1: as it were, and the soul just after death is
- 53:01Speaker 1: encumbered with its complete body of desire or comma rupa,
- 53:06Speaker 1: and all the mental images formed by comma manas that
- 53:10Speaker 1: are of a gross and animal nature are powerful. On
- 53:13Speaker 1: the lowest levels of this astral world. A poorly developed
- 53:18Speaker 1: soul will dwell on these images and act them out,
- 53:21Speaker 1: thus preparing itself to repeat them again physically in its
- 53:24Speaker 1: next life. A man who has dwelt on sensual thoughts
- 53:29Speaker 1: and made such mental images will not only be drawn
- 53:32Speaker 1: to earth scenes connected with sensual gratifications, but will constantly
- 53:37Speaker 1: be repeating them as actions in his mind, and so
- 53:40Speaker 1: setting up in his nature stronger and stronger impulses towards
- 53:44Speaker 1: the future commission of similar offenses. So with other mental
- 53:49Speaker 1: images formed from materials supplied by the desired nature that
- 53:53Speaker 1: belong to other levels in Kama Loca. As the soul
- 53:58Speaker 1: rises from the lower levels to the high, the mental
- 54:01Speaker 1: images built from the materials of the lower levels lose
- 54:04Speaker 1: these elements, thus becoming latent in consciousness or what H. P.
- 54:10Speaker 1: Bolvotsky used to call privations of matter capable of existing
- 54:15Speaker 1: but out of material manifestation. The coma rupic vesture is
- 54:20Speaker 1: purified of its grosser elements as the lower ago is
- 54:24Speaker 1: drawn upwards or inwards towards the devachonic region, each cast
- 54:30Speaker 1: off shell disintegrating in due course until the last is
- 54:34Speaker 1: doffed and the ray is completely withdrawn, free from all
- 54:38Speaker 1: astral encasement. On the return of the Ago towards earth life,
- 54:44Speaker 1: these latent images will be thrown outwards and will attract
- 54:48Speaker 1: to themselves the appropriate comic materials which make them capable
- 54:52Speaker 1: of manifestation on the astral plane, and they will become
- 54:56Speaker 1: the appetites, passions, and lower emotions of his decay desire
- 55:00Speaker 1: body for his new incarnation. We may remark in passing
- 55:06Speaker 1: that some of the mental images encircling the newly arrived
- 55:09Speaker 1: soul are the source of much trouble during the earlier
- 55:12Speaker 1: stages of the post mortem life. Superstitious beliefs presenting themselves
- 55:17Speaker 1: as mental images torture the soul with pictures of horrors
- 55:21Speaker 1: that have no place in its real surroundings. Footnote see Astrolplane, c. W. Leadbeater,
- 55:28Speaker 1: page twenty four to twenty five. All the mental images
- 55:33Speaker 1: formed from the passions and appetites are subjected to the
- 55:37Speaker 1: process above described to be re manifested by the ago
- 55:41Speaker 1: on its return to Earth life. And, as the writer
- 55:45Speaker 1: of the Astrolplane says, quote the Lapeika, the great karmic
- 55:50Speaker 1: deities of the cosmos weigh the deeds of each personality
- 55:54Speaker 1: when the final separation of its principles takes place in Kamuloca, give,
- 56:00Speaker 1: as it were, the molds of the Linga Sharira exactly
- 56:04Speaker 1: suitable to its karma for the man's next birth. Freed
- 56:10Speaker 1: for the time from these lower elements, the soul passes
- 56:13Speaker 1: on into Devachon, where it spends a time proportionate to
- 56:17Speaker 1: the wealth or poverty of its mental images, pure enough
- 56:21Speaker 1: to be carried into that region. Here it finds again
- 56:25Speaker 1: every one of its loftier efforts, however brief it may
- 56:28Speaker 1: have been, however fleeting, and here it works upon them,
- 56:33Speaker 1: building out of these materials powers for its coming lives.
- 56:40Speaker 1: The devachanic life is one of assimilation. The experiences collected
- 56:45Speaker 1: on Earth have to be worked into the texture of
- 56:48Speaker 1: the soul, and it is by these that the ago grows.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Its development depends on the number and variety of the
- 56:55Speaker 1: mental images it has formed during its earth life, and
- 56:59Speaker 1: transmits into their appropriate and more permanent types. Gathering together
- 57:05Speaker 1: all the mental images of a special class, it extracts
- 57:09Speaker 1: from them their essence. By meditation, it creates a mental
- 57:13Speaker 1: organ and pours into it as faculty the essence it
- 57:17Speaker 1: has extracted. For instance, a man has formed many mental
- 57:22Speaker 1: images out of aspirations for knowledge and efforts to understand
- 57:27Speaker 1: subtle and lofty reasonings. He casts off his body, his
- 57:32Speaker 1: mental powers, being of only average kind. In his devichan,
- 57:36Speaker 1: he works on all these mental images and evolves them
- 57:40Speaker 1: into capacity, so that his soul returns to Earth with
- 57:43Speaker 1: a higher mental apparatus than it before, possessed with much
- 57:47Speaker 1: increased intellectual powers, able to achieve tasks for which before
- 57:52Speaker 1: it was utterly inadequate. This is the transformation of the
- 57:56Speaker 1: mental images, by which, as mental images, they cease to exist.
- 58:01Speaker 1: If in later lives the soul would seek to see
- 58:04Speaker 1: again these as they were, it must seek them in
- 58:07Speaker 1: the Karmic records, where they remain forever as acaucic images.
- 58:12Speaker 1: By this transformation, they cease to be mental images created
- 58:16Speaker 1: and worked on by the soul, and become powers of
- 58:19Speaker 1: the soul, part of its very nature. If then a
- 58:23Speaker 1: man desires to possess higher mental faculties than he at
- 58:27Speaker 1: present and joys, he can ensure their development by deliberately
- 58:31Speaker 1: willing to acquire them, persistently keeping their acquirement in view.
- 58:36Speaker 1: For desire and aspiration in one life become faculty in another,
- 58:41Speaker 1: and the will to perform becomes the capacity to achieve.
- 58:46Speaker 1: But it must be remembered that the faculty thus builded
- 58:49Speaker 1: is strictly limited by the materials supplied to the architect.
- 58:54Speaker 1: There is no creation out of nothing. And if the
- 58:56Speaker 1: soul on earth fail to exercise its powers by sowing
- 59:00Speaker 1: the seed of aspiration and desire, the soul and devachan
- 59:04Speaker 1: will have but scanty harvest. Mental images which have been
- 59:10Speaker 1: constantly repeated, but are not of the aspiring character of
- 59:14Speaker 1: the longing to achieve more than the feeble powers of
- 59:17Speaker 1: the soul permit, become tendencies of thought, grooves into which
- 59:22Speaker 1: mental energy runs easily and readily. Hence the importance of
- 59:27Speaker 1: not letting the mind drift aimlessly among insignificant objects. Idly
- 59:32Speaker 1: creating trivial mental images and letting them dwell in the mind,
- 59:38Speaker 1: these will persist and form channels for future outpourings of
- 59:42Speaker 1: mental force, which will thus be led to meander about
- 59:46Speaker 1: on low levels, running into the accustomed grooves as the
- 59:50Speaker 1: paths of least resistance. The will or desire to perform
- 59:56Speaker 1: a certain action. Such will or desire, having been frustrated
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: not by want of ability, but by want of opportunity,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: or by circumstances forbidding accomplishment, will cause mental images, which,
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: if the action be of a high and pure nature,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: will be acted out in the thought on the devachanic plane,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: and will be precipitated as actions on returning to Earth.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: If the mental image was formed out of desire to
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: do beneficent actions, it would give rise to the mental
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: performance of these actions in Devachan, and this performance, the
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: reflection of the image itself, would leave it in the
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: ago as an intensified mental image of an action, which
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: would be thrown out onto the physical plane as a
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: physical act. The moment the touch of favorable opportunity precipitated
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: as crystallization of the thought into the act. The physical
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: act is inevitable when the mental image has been realized
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: as action on the devachanic plane. This same law applies
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: to mental images formed out of baser desires, though these
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: never pass into Devachan, but are subjected to the process
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: before described to be reformed on the way back to Earth.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Repeated covetous desires, for instance, out of which mental images
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: are formed, will crystallize out as acts of theft. When
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: circumstances are propitious, the causative karma is complete and the
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: physical act has become its inevitable effect when it has
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: reached the stage at which another repetition of the mental
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: image means its passing into action. It must not be
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: forgotten that repetition of an act tends to make the
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: act automatic, and this law works on planes other than
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: the physical. If then an action be constantly repeated on
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: the psychic plane, it will become automatic, and when opportunity offers,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: will automatically be imitated on the physical. How often is
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: it said after a crime it was done before I thought,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: or if I had thought for a moment, I would
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: never have done it. The speaker is quite right in
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: his plea that he was not then moved by a deliberate,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: thought out idea, and he is naturally ignorant as to
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: preceding thoughts the train of causes that led up to
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: the inevitable result. Thus, a saturated solution will solidify if
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: but one more crystal be dropped into it. At the
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: mere contact, the whole passes into the solid state. When
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: the aggregation of mental images has reached saturation point, the
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: addition of but one more solidifies them into an act.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: The act again is inevitable, for the freedom of choice
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: has been exhausted in choosing over and over again to
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: make the mental image, and the physical is constrained to
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: obey the mental impulsion. The desire to do in one
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: life reacts as compulsion to do in another, And it
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: seems as though the desire worked as a demand upon nature,
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: to which she responds by a affording the opportunity to
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: perform footnotes see the later section on the working out
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: of karma. The mental images stored up by the memory
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: as the experiences through which the soul has passed during
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: its earth life. The exact record of the action upon
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: it of the external world, must also be worked on
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: by the soul. By study of these, by meditation upon them,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: the soul learns to see their interrelations, their value, as
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: translations to it of the workings of the universal mind
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: in manifested nature. In a sentence, it extracts from them,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: by patient thought upon them all the lessons they have
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: to teach. Lessons of pleasure and pain, of pleasure breeding pain,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: and pain breeding pleasure, teaching the presence of inviolable laws
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: to which it must learn to conform itself. Lessons of
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: success and failure, of achievement and disappointment of fears, proving
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: groundless of hope's failing, realization of strength, collapsing under trial
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: of fancied knowledge, betraying itself as ignorance of patient endurance,
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: wresting victory from apparent defeat, of recklessness, changing into defeat
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: apparent victory. Over all these things, the soul ponders, and
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: by its own alchemy it changes all this mixture of
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: experiences into the gold of wisdom, so that it may
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: return to Earth as a wiser soul, bringing to bear
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: on the events which meet it in the new life.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: This result of the experiences of the old Here again
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: the mental images have been transmuted, and no longer exist
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: as mental images. They can only be recovered in their
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: old form from the karmic records. It is from the
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: mental images of experiences, and more especially from those which
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: tell how suffering has been caused by ignorance of law,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: that conscience is born and developed. The soul, during its
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: successive Earth lives is constantly led by desire to rush
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: headlong after some attractive object. In its pursuit, it dashes
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: itself against law and falls bruised and bleeding. Many such
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: experiences teach it that gratifications sought against law are but
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: wombs of pain. And when in some new Earth life
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: the desire body would fain carry the soul into enjoyment,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: which is evil, the memory of past experiences asserts itself
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: as conscience and cries aloud its forbiddence and reins in
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: the hurrying horses of the senses that would plunge heedlessly
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: after the objects of desire. At the present stage of evolution,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: all but the most backward souls have passed through sufficient
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: experiences to recognize the broad outlines of right and wrong,
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: i e. Of harmony with the divine nature and of discord.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: And on these main questions of ethics, a wide and
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: long experience enables the soul to speak clearly and definitely.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: But on many higher and subtler questions belonging to the
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: present stage of evolution and not to the stages that
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: lie behind us, experience is still so restricted and insufficient
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: that it has not yet been worked up into conscience,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: and the soul may err in its decision, however well intentioned.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Its effort to see clearly and to act rightly. Here
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: its will to obey sets it in line with the
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: divine nature on the higher planes, and its failure to
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: see how to obey on the lower plane will be
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: remedied for the future by the pain it feels as
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: it blunders up against the law. The suffering will teach
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: it what before it knew not, and its sorrowful experiences
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: will be worked into conscience to preserve it from similar
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: pain in the future, to give it the joy a
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: fuller knowledge of God in nature of self conscious accord
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: with the law of life of self conscious cooperation in
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: the work of evolution. Thus far we see as definite
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: principles of Karmic law working with mental images as causes
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: that aspirations and desires become capacities, repeated thoughts become tendencies,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: wills to perform become actions, experiences become wisdom, Painful experiences
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: become conscience. Karmic law working with astro mental images seems
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: better considered under the head of the working out of Karma,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: to which we will now turn. End of Section six.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: Section seven of Karma by Annie Bessant. The sleep Ze
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: Rockshire cording is in the public domain the working out
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: of Karma. When the soul has lived out its devachanic
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: life and has assimilated all that it can of the
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: material gathered during its last period on earth, it begins
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: to be drawn again towards Earth by the links of
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: desire that bind it to material existence. The last stage
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: of its life period now lies before it, the stage
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: during which it reclothes itself for another experience of earthly life,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: the stage that is closed by the gateway of birth.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: The soul steps over the threshold of Devachan into what
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: has been called the plane of reincarnation, bringing with it
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: the results small or great of its Devachanic work. If
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: it be but a young soul, it will have gained
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: but little progress. In the early stages of soul evolution
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: is slow to an extent scarcely realized by most students,
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: and during the babyhood of the soul, life day succeeds
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: life day in wearying succession, each earth life sowing but
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: little seed, each devachan ripening but little fruit. As faculties develop,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: growth quickens at an ever increasing rate, and the soul
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: that enters Devachan with a large store of material, comes
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: out of it with a large increase of faculty. Worked
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: out under the general laws before stated, it issues from Devachan,
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: clothed only in that body of the soul that endures
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: and grows throughout the manvantara, surrounded by the aura that
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: belongs to it as an individual, more or less glorious,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: many hued, luminous, definite, and extensive. According to the stage
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: of evolution reached by the soul. It has been wrought
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: in the heavenly fire and comes fourth as King Soma
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: note a mystic name full of meaning to the student
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: who understands the part played by Soma in some ancient mysteries.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Passing on to the astral plane on its earthword journey,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: it close itself anew in a body of desire, the
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: first result of the workings out of its past karma.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: The mental images formed during the past from materials supplied
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: by the desired nature that had become latent in consciousness
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: or what h. Po Bolvotsky used to call privations of
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: matter capable of existing but out of material manifestation, are
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: now thrown outwards by the soul and immediately attracted themselves
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: from the matter of the astral plane. The comic elements
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: congenial to their natures and become the appetites, passions, and
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: lower emotions of his the aego's desire body for his
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: new incarnation. When this work is accomplished, a work sometimes
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: very brief, sometimes one that causes long delay, the ago
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: stands in the karmic vesture he has prepared for himself,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: ready to be clothed upon to receive from the hands
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: of the agents of the great lords of Karma. The
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: etheric double note hitherto called the linga Sharira a nina
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: has given rise to much confusion built for him according
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: to the elements he has himself provided, after which shall
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: be shaped his physical body, the house which he must
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: inhabit during his coming physical life. The individual and the
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: personal ago are thus immediately self built, as it were
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: what he thought on that he has become, his qualities,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: his natural gifts. All these appertained to him as the
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: direct results of his thinkings. The man is, in very
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: truth self created, responsible in the fullest sense of the word,
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: for all that he is. But this man is to
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: have a physical and etheric body that will largely condition
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: the exercise of his faculties. He is to live in
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: some environment, and according to this will be his outward circumstances.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: He is to tread a path marked out by the
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: causes he has set going other than those which appear
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: as effects in his faculties. He has to meet events
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: joyful and sorrowful resulting from the forces he has generated.
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: Something more than his individual and personal nature seems here
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: to be needed. How is the field to be provided
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: for its energies. How are the conditioning instruments and the
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: reacting circumstances to be found and adapted. We approach a
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: region whereof little may be fitly said in that it
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: is the region of mighty spiritual intelligences, whose nature is
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: far beyond the scope of our very limited faculties, whose
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: existence may indeed be known, and whose workings may be traced,
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: but towards whom we stand much in the position occupied
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: by one of the least intelligent lower animals towards ourselves,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: and that it may know that we exist, but can
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: have no conception of the scope and workings of our consciousness.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: These great ones are spoken of as the Lapeka and
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: the four Maharajahs. How little we can know of the
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: Llupeka may be seen from the following quote the Lupeka,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: a description of whom is given in commentary six of
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: stands of four are the spirits of the universe. They
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: belong to the most occult portion of cosmogenesis, which cannot
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: be given here. Whether the adepts, even the highest know
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: this angelic order in the completeness of its triple degrees,
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: or only the lower one connected with the records of
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: our world is something which the writer is unprepared to say,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: and she would rather incline to the latter supposition of
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: its highest grade. One thing only is taught. The Lapeka
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: are connected with Karma, being its direct recorders secret doctrine.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: They are the second seven, and they keep the astral
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: records filled with the acacic images before spoken of. They
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: are connected quote with the destiny of every man and
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: the birth of every child. They give the mold of
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: the linga Sharira, which will serve as the type of
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: the physical body suited for the expression of the mental
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: and passional faculties evolved by the Ago, that is to
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: dwell therein. And they give it to the four to
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: the Maharajahs, who quote are the protectors of mankind and
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: also the agents of Karma on earth. Secret doctrine of
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: these h P. Bolvotsky writes further, quoting the fifth Stanza
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: of the Book of Jian, four winged wheels at each
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: corner for the four holy ones and their armies hosts.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: These are the four Maharajahs or great kings of the
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: Jian Chohans, the Devas who preside over each of the
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: four cardinal points. These beings are also connected with karma,
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: as the latter needs physical and material agents to carry
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: out its decrees. Receiving the mold once more the privation
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: of matter from the lapeka, the Maharajas choose for the
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: composition of the etheric double the elements suited to the
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: qualities that are to be expressed through it, and this
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: etheric double thus becomes a fitting karmic instrument for the Ago,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: giving it alike the basis for expression of the faculties
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: it has evolved and the limitations imposed upon it by
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: its own past failures and wasted opportunities. This is guided
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: by the Maharajas to the country, the race, the family,
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: the social surroundings which afford the most suitable field for
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: the working out of the karma allotted to the particular
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: life span in question, that which the Hindu calls the
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: Parabhda or beginning karma, i e. That which is to
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: be worked out in the opening life period. In no
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: one life can the accumulated karma of the past be
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: worked out, No one instrument could be formed, no surroundings
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: could be found suitable for the expression of all the
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: slowly evolved faculties of the ago, nor affording all the
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: circumstances necessary for reaping all the harvests sown in the past,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: for discharging all the obligations contracted towards other agoes with
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: whom the incarnating soul has come into contact in the
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: course of its long evolution. So much, then of the
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: total karma as can be arranged for in one life
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: period has a suitable etheric double provided for it, the
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: mold of that double being guided to a suitable field.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: It is placed where the ago may come into relations
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: with some of such agoes with whom it has been
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: related in its past, as are present in or are
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: coming into incarnation during its own life period. A country
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: is chosen where the religious, political, and social conditions can
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: be found which are suitable to some of its capacities
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: and afford the field for the occurrence of some of
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: the effects has generated. A race is selected, subject of course,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: to the wider laws affecting incarnation. In races into which
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: we cannot here enter, of which the characteristics resemble, some
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: of the faculties which are ripe for exercise, of which
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: the type befits the incoming soul, a family is found
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: in which physical heredity has evolved. The kind of physical
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: materials which built into the etheric double will adapt themselves
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: to its constitution. A family of which the general or
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: special physical organization will afford play to the mental and
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: passional natures of the Ago. Out of the manifold qualities
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: existing in the soul, and out of the manifold physical
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: types existing in the world, such can be selected, as
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: are adapted to each other. A suitable casing can be
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: built for the waiting Ago, an instrument and a field
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: in which some of his karma can be outworked. Fathomless
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: to our short plummet lines as may be that knowledge
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: and the power required for such adaptations, we can yet
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: dimly see that the adaptations can be made, and that
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: perfect justice can be done. The web of a man's
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: destiny may indeed be composed of threads that to us
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: are innumerable, and that may need to be woven into
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: a pattern of to us in conceivable complexity. A thread
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: may disappear it has only passed to the underside to
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: come to the surface again. Presently, a thread may suddenly appear,
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: it is only re emerged on the upper side after
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: a long transit underneath, seeing but a fragment of the web.
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: The pattern may to our short sight be indistinguishable. But
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: as was written by the sage Iamblicus, what appears to
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: us to be an accurate definition of justice does not
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: also appear to be so to the gods. For we,
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: looking to that which is most brief, direct our attention
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: to things present, and to this momentary life and the
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: manner in which it subsists. But the powers that are
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: superior to us know the whole life of the soul
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: and all its former lives on the mysteries. This assurance
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: that perfect justice rules the world finds support from the
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: increasing knowledge of the evolving soul. For as it advances
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: and begins to see on higher planes and to transmit
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: its knowledge to the waking consciousness, we learn with ever
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: growing certainty, and therefore with ever increasing joy, that the
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: good law is working with undeviating accuracy, that its agents
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: apply it everywhere with unerring insight, with unfailing strength, and
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: that all is therefore very well with the world and
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: with its struggling souls. Through the darkness rings out the
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: cry all is well from the watchman's souls who carry
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: the lamp of divine wisdom through the murky ways of
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: our human city. Some of the principles of the working
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: out of the law we can see, and in knowledge
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: of these will help us in the tracing out of
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: causes the understanding of effects. We have already seen that
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: thoughts build character. Let us next realize that actions make environment.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: Here we have to do with a general principle of
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: far reaching effect, and it will be well to work
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: it out a little into detail. By his actions, man
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: affects his neighbors on the physical plane. He spreads happiness
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: around him, or he causes distress, increasing or diminishing the
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: sum of human welfare. This increase or diminution of happiness
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: may be due to very different motives, good, bad, or mixed.
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: A man may do an act that gives widespread enjoyment
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: from sheer benevolence, from a longing to give happiness to
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: his fellow creatures. Let us say that from such a
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: motive he presents a park to a town for the
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: free use of its inhabitants. Another may do a similar
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: act from mere ostentation, from desire to attract attention from
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: those who can bestow social honors. Say he might give
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: it as a purchase money for a title. A third
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: may give a park from mixed motives, partly unselfish, partly selfish.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: The motives will severally effect these three men's characters in
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: their future incarnations, for improvement, for degradation, for small results.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: But the effect of the action in causing happiness to
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: large numbers of people does not depend on a motive
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: of the giver. The people enjoy the park equally, no
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: matter what may have prompted its gift, and this enjoyment,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: due to the action of the giver, establishes for him
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: a karmic claim on nature, a debt due to him
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: that will be scrupulously paid. He will receive a physically
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: comfortable or luxurious environment, as he has given widespread physical enjoyment,
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: and his sacrifice of physical wealth will bring him his
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: due reward, the karmic fruit of his action. This is
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: his right. But the use he makes of his position,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: the happiness he derives from his wealth and his surroundings,
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: will depend chiefly on his character. And here again the
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: just reward accrues to him. Each seed bearing its appropriate harvest,
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: service rendered to the full measure of opportunity in one
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: life will produce as effect enlarged opportunities of service in another. Thus,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: one who in a very limited sphere helped each who
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: came in the way would in a future life be
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: borne into a position where openings for giving effective help
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: were many in far reaching. Again, wasted opportunities reappear, transmuted
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: as limitations of the instrument and as misfortunes in the environment.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: For instance, the brain of the etheric double will be
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: built defectively, thus bringing about a defective physical brain. The
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: ago will plan, but will find itself lacking in executive ability,
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: or will grasp an idea but be unable to impress
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: it distinctly on the brain. The wasted opportunities are transformed
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: into frustrated longings, into desires which fail to find it
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: scns expression into yearnings to help, blocked by the absence
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: of power to render it, whether from defective capacity or
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: from lack of occasion. This same principle is often at
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: work in the cutting away from tender care of some
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: well loved child or idolized youth. If an ago treats
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: unkindly or neglects one to whom he owes affectionate duty
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: and protection or service, of any kind, he will, but
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: too likely again find himself born in close relationship with
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: the neglected one, and perhaps tenderly attached to him, only
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: for early death to snatch him away from the encircling arms.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: The despised poor relation may reappear as the much honored heir,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: the only son. And when the parents find their house
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: left unto them, desolate, they marvel at the unequal ways
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: of providence that deprive them of their only one, on
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: whom all their hopes have been set, and leave untied
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: the many children of their neighbor. Yet are the ways
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: of Karmi equal, though past finding out, save for those
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: whose eyes have been opened. Congenital defects result from a
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: defective etheric double, and are lifelong penalties for serious rebellions
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: against law or for injuries inflicted upon others. All such
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: arise from the working of the lords of Karma, and
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: are the physical manifestation of the deformities necessitated by the
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: errors of the Aego, by his excesses, and defects in
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: the mold of the etheric double made by them. So again,
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: from their just administration of the law come the inwrought
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: tendency to reproduce a family disease, the suitable configuration of
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: the etheric double, and the direction of it to a
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: family in which a given disease is hereditary, and which
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: affords the continuous plasm suitable to the development of the
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: appropriate germs. The development of artistic faculties to take another
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: type of qualities will be answered by the lords of
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: Karma by the provision of a mold for the etheric double,
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: after which a delicate nervous system can be physically built,
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: and often by the guiding of it to a family
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: in whose members the special faculty developed by the ago
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: has found expression, sometimes for many generations. For the expression
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: of such a faculty, as that of music, for instance,
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: a peculiar physical body is needed, a delicacy of physical
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: ear and a physical touch, And to such delicacy in
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: appropriate physical heredity would be most conducive. The rendering of
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: service to man collectively, as by some noble book or speech.
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: The spreading of elevating ideas by pen or tongue is
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: again a claim upon the law scrupulously discharged by its
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: mighty agents. Such help given comes back as help bestowed
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: on the giver, as mental and spiritual assistance, which is
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: his by right. We thus may grasp the broad principles
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: of karmic working, the respective parts played by the lords
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: of karma and by the Ago itself in the destiny
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: of the individual. The ago supplies all the materials, but
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: the materials are used by the lords or by the Ago, respectively,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: according to their nature. The latter builds up the character
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: gradually evolves itself. The former build the mold that limits,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: choose the environment, and generally adapt and adjust in order
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: that the good law may find its unerring expression despite
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: the clashing wills of men end of section seven Section
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: eight of Karma. By any vessant, this lib ervox recording
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: is in the public domain, facing karmic results. Sometimes people feel,
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: on first recognizing the existence of karma, that if all
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: be the working out of law, they are but helpless
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: slaves of destiny. Air Considering how the law may be
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: utilized for the control of destiny, let us study for
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: a few moments a typical case and see how necessity
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: and free will to use the accepted terms are both
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: at work and at work in harmony. A man comes
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: into the world with certain inborn mental faculties. Let us
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: say of an average type, with a passional nature that
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: shows definite characteristics, some good, some bad, with an etheric
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: double and physical body fairly well formed and healthy, but
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: of no specially splendid character. These are his limitations, clearly
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: marked out for him, and he finds himself when he
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: reaches manhood with this mental, passional, astral physical stock in hand,
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: and he has to do the best he can with it.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: There are many mental heights that he is definitely unable
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: to climb, mental conceptions which his powers do not permit
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: him to grasp. There are temptations to which his passional
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: nature yields, though he strives against them. There are triumphs
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: of physical strength and skill that he cannot achieve. In fact,
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: he finds that he can no more think as a
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: genius thinks, than he can be beautiful as an apollo.
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: He is within a limiting ring and cannot pass out
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: of it long as he may for liberty. Moreover, he
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: cannot avoid troubles of many kinds. They strike him, and
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: he can only bear his pain. He cannot escape from it.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: Now these things are so, the man is limited by
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: his past thoughts, by his wasted opportunities, by his mistaken choices,
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: by his foolish yieldings. He is bound by his forgotten
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: desires and chained by his errors of an earlier day.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: And yet he is not bound. The real man, he
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: who made the past that imprisons his present, can work
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: within the prison house and create a future of liberty. Nay,
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: let him know that he himself is free, and the
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: fetters will crumble away from his limbs, and according to
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: the measure of his knowledge, will be the illusoriness of
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: his bonds. But for the ordinary man, to whom the
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: knowledge will come as a spark, not as a flame,
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: the first step towards freedom will be to accept his
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: limitations as self made, and proceed to enlarge them. True,
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: he cannot think as a genius thinks just yet, But
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: he can think to the very best of his ability,
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: and by and by he will become a genius. He
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: can make power for the future, and he will. True,
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: he cannot get rid of his passional follies in a moment,
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: but he can fight against them, and when he has failed,
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: he can fight on certain that presently he will conquer. True,
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: he has astral and physical weaknesses and uglinesses, but as
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: his thoughts grow strong and pure and beautiful, and his
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: work beneficent. He is ensuring for himself more perfect forms
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: in days to come. He is always himself the free
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: soul in the midst of his prison house, and he
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: can hew down the walls he himself builded. He has
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: no jailer save himself. He can will his freedom, and
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: in willing it he will achieve. A trouble meets him.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: He is bereaved of a friend. He commits a serious fault.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: Be it so he sinned as thinker in the past.
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: He suffers as actor in the present. But his friend
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: is not lost. He will hold him fast by life,
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: and in the future he will find him again. Meanwhile,
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: there are others round him to whom he can give
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: the services he would have showered on his beloved, And
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: he will not again neglect the duties that are his,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: and so so seed for similar loss in future lives.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: He has committed an open wrong and suffers its penalty.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: But he thought it in the past, else could he
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: not have wrought it. Now? He will patiently endure the
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: penalty he purchased by his thought, and will so think
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: to day that his morrows shall be free from shame
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: into what was darkness has come a ray of light,
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: and the light is singing to him, Ho, ye who suffer, no,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: ye suffer from yourselves. None else compels. The law that
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: seemed to be fetters has become wings, and by it
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: he can rise to regions of which without it he
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: could only dream. End of Section eight, Section nine of Karma.
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: By any lessent, this LibriVox recording is in the public domain.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: Building the future. The crowds of souls drift onwards along
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: the sluggish current of time. As the earth rolls, it
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: carries them with it. As globe succeeds globe, they two
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: pass on. But the wisdom religion is a new proclaim
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: to the world, that all who choose may cease to
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: drift and may learn to outstrip the slow evolution of
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: the worlds. The student, when he grasps something of the
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: meaning of the law, of its absolute certainty, of its
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: unerring exactitude, begins to take himself in hand, an active
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: to superintend his own evolution. He scrutinizes his own character
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: and then proceeds to manipulate it, deliberately, practicing mental and
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: moral qualities, enlarging capacities, strengthening weaknesses, supplying deficiencies, removing excrescences,
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: knowing that he becomes that on which he meditates. He
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: deliberately and regularly meditates on a noble ideal, for he
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: understands why the great Christian Initiate Paul bade his disciples
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: think on the things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely,
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: and of good report. Daily. He will meditate on his
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: ideal daily, he will strive to live it. And he
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: will do this persistently and calmly, without haste, without rest,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: for he knows he is building on a sure foundation,
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: on the rock of the eternal law. He appeals to
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: the law. He takes refuge in the law. For such
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: a man failure exists. Not there is no power in
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: heaven or in Earth that can bar his way. During
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: earth life, he gathers his experiences, utilizing all that comes
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: in his way. During Devichan, he assimilates them and plans
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: out his future buildings. Herein lies the value of a
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: true theory of life, even while the theory rests on
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: the testimony of others and not on individual knowledge. When
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: a man accepts and partially understands the working of karma,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: he can at once begin this building of character, setting
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: each stone with deliberate care, knowing that he is building
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: for eternity. There is no longer hasty running up and
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: pulling down, working on one plan to day, on another, tomorrow,
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: on none at all the day after. But there is
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: a drafting of a well thought out scheme of character,
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: as it were, and then the building according to the scheme.
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: For the soul becomes an architect as well as a builder,
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: and wastes no more time in a board of beginnings.
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: Hence the speed with which the later stages of evolution
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: are accomplished, the striking, almost incredible advances made by the
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: strong soul in its manhood. End of section nine, Section
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: ten of Karma by any bessant, This LibriVox recording is
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: in the public domain. Molding Karma, the man who has
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: set himself deliberately to build the future will realize as
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: his knowledge increases, that he can do more than mold
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: his own character, thus making his future destiny. He begins
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: to understand that he is at the center of things
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: in a very real sense, a living, active, self determining being,
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: and that he can act upon circumstances as well as
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: upon himself. He has long been accustoming himself to follow
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: the great ethical laws laid down for the guidance of
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: humanity by the divine teachers who have been born from
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: age to age, And he now grasps the fact that
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: these laws are based on fundamental principles in nature, and
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: that morality is science applied to conduct. He sees that
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: in his daily life he can neutralize the ill results
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: that would follow from some ill deed by bringing to
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: bear upon the same point a corresponding force for good.
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: A man sends against him an evil thought, he might
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: meet it with another of its own kind, and then
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: the two thought forms, running together like two drops of water,
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: would be reinforce forced, strengthened each by each. But this
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: one against whom the evil thought is flying, is a
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: knower of karma, and he meets the malignant form with
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: the force of compassion and shatters it. The broken form
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: can no longer be insold with elemental life. The life
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: melts back to its own, the form disintegrates. Its power
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: for evil is thus destroyed by compassion, and hatred ceases
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: by love. Delusive forms of falsehood go forth into the
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: astral world. The man of knowledge sends against them forms
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: of truth. Purity breaks up foulness and charity selfish greed.
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: As knowledge increases, this action becomes direct and purposive. The
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: thought is aimed with definite intent, winged with potent will.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: Thus evil karma is checked in its very inception, and
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: naught is left to make a karmic tie between the
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: one who shot a shaft of injury and the one
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: who burned it up by pardon. The divine teachers, who
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: spake as men having authority on the duty of overcoming
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: evil with good, base their precepts on their knowledge of
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: the law. Their followers, who obey without fully seeing the
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: scientific foundation of the precept, lessen the heavy karma that
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: would be generated if they answered hate with hate. But
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: men of knowledge deliberately destroy the evil forms, understanding the
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: facts on which the teaching of the masters has ever
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: been based, and sterilizing the seed of evil, they prevent
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: a future harvest of pain at a stage which is
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: comparatively advanced in comparison with that of the slowly drifting
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: average humanity. A man will not only build his own
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: character and work with deliberate intent on the thoughtful that
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: come in his way, but he will begin to see
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: the past, and thus more accurately to gauge the present.
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: Tracing karmic causes onwards to their effects, he becomes able
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: to modify the future by consciously setting forces to work
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: designed to interact with others already in motion. Knowledge enables
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: him to utilize law with the same certainty with which
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: scientists utilize it in every department of nature. Let us
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: pause for a moment to consider the laws of motion.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: A body has been set in motion and is moving
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: along a definite line. If another force be brought to
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: bear upon it, differing in direction from the one that
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: gave it its initial impulse, the body will move along
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: another line, a line compounded of the two impulses. No
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: energy will be lost, but part of the force which
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: gave the initial impulse will be used up in partially
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: counteracting the new and the resultant direction along which the
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: body will move will be that neither of the first
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: force nor of the second, but of the interplay of
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: the two. A physicist can calculate exactly at what angle
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: he must strike a moving body in order to cause
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: it to move in a desired direction, And although the
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: body itself may be beyond his immediate reach, he can
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: send after it a force of calculated velocity to strike
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: it at a definite angle, thus deflecting it from its
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: previous course and impelling it along a new line. In
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: this there is no violation of law, no interference with law,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: only the utilization of law by knowledge, the bending of
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: natural forces to accomplish the purpose of the human will.
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: If we apply this principle to the molding of karma,
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: we shall readily see, apart from the fact that law
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: is inviolable, that there is no interference with karma. When
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: we modify its action by knowledge, we are using karmaic
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: force to affect karmic results, and once more we conquer
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: nature by obedience. Let us now suppose that the advanced student,
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: glancing backwards over the past, sees lines of past karma
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: converging to a point of action of an undesirable kind.
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: He can introduce a new force among these converging energies
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: and so modify the event, which must be the resultant
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: of all the forces concerned in its generation and ripening.
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: For such action, he requires knowledge, not only the power
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: to see the past and to trace the lines which
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: connect it with the present, but also to calculate exactly
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: the influence that the force he introduces will exercise as
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: modifying the resultant, and further the effects that will flow
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: from this resultant considered as cause. In this way he
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: may lessen or destroy the results of evil wrought by
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: himself in the past by the good forces he pours
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: forth into his karmic stream. He cannot undo the past,
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: he cannot destroy it, but so far as its effects
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: are still in the future, he can modify them or
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: reverse them by the new forces he brings to bear
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: as causes, taking part in their production. In all this
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: he is merely utilizing the law, and he works with
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: the certainty of the scientist who balances one force against another,
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: and unable to destroy a unit of energy, can yet
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: make a body move as he will by a calculation
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: of angles and of moments. Similarly, karma may be accelerated
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: or delayed, and thus again will undergo modification by the
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: action of the surroundings amid which it is worked out.
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: Let us put the same thing again a little differently,
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: For the conception is an important and a fruitful one.
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: As knowledge grows, it becomes easier and easier to get
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: rid of the karma of the past, inasmuch as causes
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: which are working out to their accomplishment all come within
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: the sight of the soul, which is approaching its liberation.
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: As it looks back over past lives, as it glances
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: down the vista of centuries along which it has been
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: slowly climbing, it is able to see there the way
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: in which its bonds were made, the causes which have
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: set in motion. It is able to see how many
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: of those causes have worked themselves out and are exhausted,
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: how many of those causes are still working themselves out.
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: It is able not only to look backwards, but also
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: to look forwards and see the effects these causes will produce,
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: so that glancing in front, the effects that will be
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: produced are seen, and glancing behind, the causes that will
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: bring about these effects are also visible. There is no
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: difficulty in the supposition that, just as you can find
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: in ordinary physical nature, that knowledge of certain laws enables
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: us to predict a result and to see the law
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: that brings that result about. So we can transfer this
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: idea onto a higher plane and can imagine a condition
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: of the developed soul in which it is able to
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: see the karmic causes that it has set going behind it,
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: and also the karmic effects through which it has to
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: work in the future. With such a knowledge of causes
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: and a vision of their working out, it is possible
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: to introduce fresh causes to neutralize these effects. And by
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: utilizing the law, and by relying absolutely on its unchanging
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: and unvarying character, and by a careful calculation of the
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: forces set going to make the effects in the future
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: those which we desire. That is a mere matter of calculation.
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: Suppose vibrations of hatred have been set going in the past.
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: We can deliberately set to work to quench these vibrations
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: and to prevent their working out into the present and future,
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: by setting up against them vibrations of love, just in
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: the same way as we can take a wave of
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: sound and then a second wave, in setting the two
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: going one slightly after the other, so that the vibrations
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: of the denser part of the one shall correspond to
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: the rarer part of the other, And thus out of
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: sounds we can make silence by interference. So in the
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: higher regions it is possible by love and hate vibrations
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: used by knowledge and controlled by will, to bring karmic
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: causes to an ending, and so to reach equilibrium, which
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: is another word for liberation. That knowledge is beyond the
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: reach of the enormous majority. What the majority can do
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: is this, if they choose to utilize the science of
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: the soul, they may take the evidence of experts on
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: this subject. They may take the moral precepts of the
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: great religious teachers of the world, and, by obedience to
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: these precepts to which their intuition responds, although they may
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: not understand the method of their working, they may affect
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: in the doing that which also may be affected by
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: distinct and deliberate knowledge. So devotion and obedience to a
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: teacher may work towards liberation as knowledge might otherwise do.
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: Applying these principles in every direction, the student will begin
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: to realize how man is handicapped by ignorance, and how
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: great is the part played by knowledge and human evolution.
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: Men drift because they do not know. They are helpless
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: because they are blind. The man who would finish his
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: course more rapidly than will the common mass of men,
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: who would leave the slothful crowd behind. As the racer
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: leaves the hack, he needs wisdom as well as love,
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: knowledge as well as devotion. There is no need for
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: him to wear out slowly the links of chains forged
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: long ago. He can file them swiftly through and be
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: rid of them as effectively as though they slowly rusted away,
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: to set him free. End of Section ten, Section eleven
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: of Karma. By any bessant, this LibriVox recording is in
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: the public domain the ceasing of karma. Karma brings us
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: ever back to rebirth, binds us to the wheel of
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: births and deaths. Good karma drags us back as relentlessly
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: as bad. And the chain which is wrought out of
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: our virtues holds us firmly and as closely as that
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: forged from our vices. How then, shall the weaving of
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: the chain be put an end to? Since man must
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: think and feel as long as he lives, and thought
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: and feelings are ever generating karma. The answer to this
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: is the great lesson of the Bagavagida, the lesson taught
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: to the warrior prince. Neither to hermit nor to student.
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: Was that lesson given but to the warrior striving for victory.
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: The prince immersed in the duties of his state, not
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: in action, but in desire not in action, but in
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: attachment to its fruit lies the binding force of action.
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: In action is performed with desire to enjoy its fruit.
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: A course is adopted with desire to obtain its results.
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: The soul is expectant and nature must reply to it.
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: It has demanded and nature must award to every cause.
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: Is bound its effect to every action, Its fruit and
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: desire is the cord that links them together, the thread
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: that runs between. If this could be burned up, the
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: connection would cease. And when all the bonds of the
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: heart are broken, the soul is free. Karma can then
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: no longer hold it. Karma can then no longer bind it.
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: The wheel of cause and effect may continue to turn,
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: but the soul has become the liberated life. Quote without attachment.
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: To constantly perform action, which is duty. For performing action
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: without attachment, man verily reaches the supreme bagavagita. To perform
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: this karma yoga yoga of action, as it is called,
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: man must perform every action merely as duty, doing all
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: in harmony with the law, seeking to conform to the
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: law on any plane of being on which he is busied.
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: He aims at becoming a force working with the divine
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: will for evolution, and yields a perfect obedience in every
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: phase of his activity. Thus, all his actions partake of
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: the nature of sacrifice, and are offered for the turning
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: of the wheel of the law, not for any fruit
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: that they may bring. The action is performed as duty.
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: The fruit is joyfully given for the helping of men.
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: He has no concern with it. It belongs to the law,
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: and to the law he leaves it for distribution. And
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: so we read quote. Whose works are all free from
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: the molding of desire, whose actions are burned up by
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: the fire of wisdom, he is called a sage by
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: the spiritually wise, having abandoned all attachment to the fruit
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: of action, always content seeking refuge in none. Although doing actions,
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: he is not doing anything free from desire, his thoughts
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: controlled by the self. Having abandoned all attachment, performing action
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: by by the body alone, he doth not commit sin.
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: Content with whatsoever he receiveth free from the pairs of opposites,
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: without envy, balanced in success and failure. Though he hath acted,
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: he is not bound for with attachment, dead harmonious, his
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: thoughts established in wisdom, his works sacrifices all his action
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: melts away end bagavad Gita. Body and mind work out
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: their full activities with the body all bodily. Action is
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: performed with the mind, all mental. But the self remains serene, untroubled,
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: lending not of its eternal essence to forge the chains
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: of time right. Action is never neglected, but is faithfully
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: performed to the limit of the available powers. Denunciation of
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: attachment to the fruit, not implying any sloth or carelessness
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: in acting. Quote. As the ignorant act from attachment to action,
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: oh barrata, so should the wise act without attachment, desiring
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: the maintenance of mankind. Let no wise man unsettle the
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: mind of ignorant people attached to action, but acting in
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: harmony with me. Let him render all action attractive en Bagavagita.
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: The man who reaches this state of inaction in action
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: has learned the secret of the ceasing of karma. He
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: destroys by knowledge the action he has generated in the past.
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: He burns up the action of the present by devotion.
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: Then it is that he attains the state spoken of
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: by John the divine in the real, in which the
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: man goeth no more out of the temple for the
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: soul goes out of the temple many and many a
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: time into the plains of life. But the time arrives
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: when he becomes a pillar, a pillar in the temple
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: of my God. That temple is the universe of liberated souls,
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: and only those who are bound to nothing for themselves
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: can be bound to everyone in the name of the
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: one life. These bonds of desire, then, of personal desire, nay,
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: of individual desire, must be broken. We can see how
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: the breaking will begin, and here comes in a mistake
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: which many young students are apt to fall into, a
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: mistake so natural and easy that it is constantly occurring.
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: We do not break the bonds of the heart by
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: trying to kill the heart. We do not break the
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: bonds of desire by trying to turn our into stones
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: or pieces of metal. Unable to feel, the disciple becomes
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: more sensitive, not less so as he nears his liberation,
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: he becomes more tender and not more hard. For the
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: perfect disciple, who is as the master, is the one
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: who answers to every thrill in the outside universe, who
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: is touched by and responds to everything, who feels and
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: answers to everything, who just because he desires nothing for
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: himself is able to give everything to all. Such a
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: one cannot be held by karma. He forges no bonds
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: to bind the soul. As the disciple becomes more and
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: more a channel of divine life to the world, he
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: asks nothing save to be a channel with wider and
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: wider bed along which the great life may flow. His
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: only wish is that he may become a larger vessel,
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: with less of obstacle in him, lid self to hinder
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: the outward pouring of the life, working for nothing save
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: to be of service. That is the life of discipleship,
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: in which the bonds that bind are broken. But there
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: is one bond that breaks not ever, the bond of
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: that real unity, which is no bond, for I cannot
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: be distinguished as separate that which unites the one to
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: the all, the disciple to the Master, the Master to
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: his disciple, the divine life which draws us ever onwards
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: and upwards, but binds us not to the wheel of
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: birth and death. We are drawn back to Earth, first
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: by desire for what we enjoy there, then by higher
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: and higher desires, which still have Earth for their region
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: of fulfillment, for spiritual knowledge, spiritual growth, spiritual devotion. What
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: is it when all is accomplished, that still binds the
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: masters to the world of men? Not anything that the
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: world can offer them. There is no knowledge on earth
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: they have not. There is no power on earth that
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: they willed not. There is no further experience that might
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: enrich their lives. There is nothing that the world can
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: give them that can draw them back to birth. And
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: yet they come because a divine compulsion that is from
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: within and not from without, sends them to the earth,
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: which otherwise they might leave forever to help their brethren
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: to labor century after century, millennium after millennium for the
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: joy and service that make their love and peace ineffable,
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: with nothing that the earth can give them, save the
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: joy of seeing other souls growing into their likeness, beginning
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: to share with them the conscious life of God. End
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: of Section eleven twelve and conclusion of Karma by any vessent.
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: This LibriVox recording is in the public domain. Collective karma,
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: the gathering together of souls into groups, forming families, castes, nations, races,
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: introduces a new element of perplexity into karmic results, and
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: it is here that room is found for what are
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: called accidents, as well as for the adjustments continually being
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: made by the lords of karma. It appears that while
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: nothing can befall a man that is not in his
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: karma as an individual, advantage may be taken of, say
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: a national or a seismic catastrophe, to enable him to
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: work off a piece of bad karma which would not
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: normally have fallen into the lifespan through which he is passing.
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: It appears I can only speak here on speculatively, not
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: having definite knowledge on this point, as though sudden death
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: could not strike off a man's body unless he owed
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: such a death to the law, no matter into what
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: whirl of catastrophic disaster he may be hurled, he would
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: be what is called miraculously preserved amid the death and
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: ruin that swept away his neighbors and emerge unharmed from
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: tempest or fiery outbreak. But if he owed a life
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: and were drawn by his national or family karma within
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: the area of such a disturbance, then although such sudden
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: death had not been woven into his linga sharira for
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: that special life, no active interference might be made for
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: his preservation. Special care would be taken of him afterwards,
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: that he might not suffer unduly from his sudden snatching
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: out of earth life, but he would be allowed to
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: pay his debt on the arising of such an opportunity
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: brought within his reach by the wider sweep of the law,
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: by the collective karma that involves him. Similarly, benefits may
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: accrue to him by this indirect action of the law,
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: as when he belongs to a nation that is enjoying
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: the fruit of some good national karma, and he may
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: thus receive some debt owed to him by nature, the
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: payment of which would not have fallen within his present
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: lot had only his individual karma been concerned. A man's
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: birth in a particular nation is influenced by certain general
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: principles of evolution, as well as by his immediate characteristics.
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: The soul, in its slow development, has not only to
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: pass through the seven root races of a globe I
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: deal with the normal evolution of humanity, but also through
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: the sub races. This necessity imposes certain conditions to which
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: the individual karma must adapt itself, and a nation belonging
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: to the sub race through which the soul has to
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: pass will offer the area within us which the more
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: special conditions needed must be found where a long series
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: of incarnations have been followed. It has been found that
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: some individuals progress from sub race to sub race very regularly,
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: whereas others are more erratic, taking repeated incarnations perhaps in
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: one sub race. Within the limits of the sub race,
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: the individual characteristics of the man will draw him towards
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: one nation or another, and we may notice dominant national
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: characteristics re emerging on the stage of history and block
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: after the normal interval of fifteen hundred years. Thus, crowds
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: of Romans reincarnate as Englishmen, the enterprising, colonizing, conquering, imperial
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: instincts reappearing as national attributes. A man in whom such
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: national characteristics were strongly marked, and whose time for rebirth
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: had come, would be drafted into the England nation by
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: his karma, and would then share the national destiny for
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: good or for evil, so far as that destiny affected
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: the fate of an individual. The family tie is naturally
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: of a more personal character than is the national and
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: those who weave bonds of close affection in one life
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: tend to be drawn together again as members of the
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: same family. Sometimes these ties recur very persistently life after life,
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: and the destinies of two individuals are very intimately interwoven
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: in successive incarnations, sometimes in consequence of the different lengths
- 2:02:40Speaker 1: of the devachans necessitated by differences of intellectual and spiritual
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: activity during the earth lives spent together, members of a
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: family may be scattered and may not meet again until
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: after several incarnations. Speaking generally, the more close the tie
- 2:02:57Speaker 1: in the higher regions of life, the greater the likelihood
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: of rebirth in a family group. Here again, the karma
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: of the individual is affected by the interlinked karmas of
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: his family, and he may enjoy or suffer through these
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: in a way not inherent in his own life karma,
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: and so receive or pay karmic debts out of date,
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: as we may say, so far as the personality is concerned,
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: this seems to bring with it a certain balancing up
- 2:03:25Speaker 1: or compensation in kama, loca and devachan, in order that
- 2:03:29Speaker 1: complete justice may be done even to the fleeting personality.
- 2:03:35Speaker 1: The working out in detail of collective karma would carry
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: us far beyond the limits of such an elementary work
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: as the present, and far beyond the knowledge of the writer.
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: Only these fragmentary hints can at present be offered to
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: the student. For precise understanding, a long study of individual
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: cases would be necessary, traced through many thousands of years.
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: Speculation on these matters is idle. It is patient observation
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: that is needed. There is, however, one other aspect of
- 2:04:07Speaker 1: collective karma, on which some word may fitly be said,
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: the relation between men's thoughts and deeds and the aspects
- 2:04:15Speaker 1: of external nature. On this obscure subject, Madame Blavotsky has
- 2:04:21Speaker 1: the following following Plato Aristotle explained that the term elements
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: was understood only as meaning the incorporeal principles placed at
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: each of the four great divisions of our cosmical world
- 2:04:39Speaker 1: to supervise them. Thus, no more than Christians to pagans
- 2:04:44Speaker 1: adore and worship the elements and the imaginary cardinal points,
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: but the gods that respectively rule over them. For the Church,
- 2:04:54Speaker 1: there are two kinds of sadeial beings, angels and devils.
- 2:04:59Speaker 1: For the kabba zaalist and the occultists there is one class,
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: and neither occultist nor cabalist makes any difference between the
- 2:05:07Speaker 1: rectors of light and the rectorous tenebraum or cosmocraturus, whom
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: the Roman Church imagines and discovers in the Rectors of Light.
- 2:05:19Speaker 1: As soon as any one of them is called by
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: another name than the one she addresses him by. It
- 2:05:25Speaker 1: is not the rector or Maharajah who punishes or rewards
- 2:05:31Speaker 1: with or without God's permission or order, but man himself,
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: his deeds or karma, attracting individually and collectively, as in
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: the case of whole nations. Sometimes every kind of evil
- 2:05:44Speaker 1: and calamity we produce causes, and these awaken the corresponding
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: powers in the sidereal world, which are magnetically and irresistibly
- 2:05:54Speaker 1: attracted to and react upon those who produce such causes,
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: whether such per since are practically the evildoers or simply
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: thinkers who brewed mischief. For thought is matter, we are
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: taught by modern science, and every particle of the existing
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: matter must be a register of all that has happened,
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: As Messrs Jevins and Babbage, in their Principles of Science
- 2:06:21Speaker 1: tell the profane, modern science is every day drawn more
- 2:06:25Speaker 1: into the maelstrom of occultism, unconsciously, no doubt, still, very sensibly,
- 2:06:33Speaker 1: thought is matter, not, of course, however, in the sense
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: of the German materialists Mahlshot, who assures us that thought
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: is the movement of matter, a statement of almost unparalleled absurdity.
- 2:06:48Speaker 1: Mental states and bodily states are utterly contrasted as such,
- 2:06:52Speaker 1: but that does not affect the position that every thought,
- 2:06:55Speaker 1: in addition to its physical accompaniment brain change, exist bibbets
- 2:07:00Speaker 1: in objective though to us superstensuously objective aspect on the
- 2:07:05Speaker 1: astral plane end the secret doctrine. It seems that when
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: men generate a large number of malignant thought forms of
- 2:07:18Speaker 1: a destructive character, and when these congregate in huge masses
- 2:07:22Speaker 1: on the astral plane, their energy may be and is
- 2:07:26Speaker 1: precipitated on the physical plane, stirring up wars, revolutions, and
- 2:07:31Speaker 1: social disturbances and upheavals of every kind, falling as collective
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: karma on their progenitors and affecting widespread ruin. Thus, then,
- 2:07:41Speaker 1: collectively also man is the master of his destiny, and
- 2:07:45Speaker 1: his world is molded by his creative action. Epidemics of
- 2:07:50Speaker 1: crime and disease cycles of accidents have a similar explanation.
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: Thought forms of anger aid in the perpetration of a murder.
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: These elementals are nourished by the crime and the result
- 2:08:04Speaker 1: of the crime. The hatred and the revengeful thoughts of
- 2:08:07Speaker 1: those who loved the victim, The fierce resentment of the criminal,
- 2:08:11Speaker 1: his baffled fury, when violently sent out of the world,
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: still further reinforce their host with many malignant forms. These,
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: again from the astral plane, impel an evil man to
- 2:08:23Speaker 1: fresh crime, and again the circle of new impulses is trodden,
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: and we have an epidemic of violent deeds. Diseases spread,
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: and the thoughts of fear which follow their progress act
- 2:08:37Speaker 1: directly as strengtheners of the power of the disease. Magnetic
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: disturbances are set up and propagated and react on the
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: magnetic spheres of people within the affected area in every direction.
- 2:08:50Speaker 1: In endless fashions do men's evil thoughts play havoc, as
- 2:08:55Speaker 1: he who should have been a divine co builder in
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: the universe, uses his creator of power to destroy conclusion.
- 2:09:06Speaker 1: Such is an outline of the great law of Karma
- 2:09:09Speaker 1: and of its workings. By a knowledge of which a
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: man may accelerate his evolution, by the utilization of which
- 2:09:17Speaker 1: a man may free himself from bondage and become long ere.
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: His race has trod in its course one of the
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: helpers and saviors of the world. A deep and steady
- 2:09:28Speaker 1: conviction of the truth of this law gives to life
- 2:09:31Speaker 1: in a movable serenity and a perfect fearlessness. Nothing can
- 2:09:36Speaker 1: touch us that we have not wrought, nothing can injure
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: us that we have not merited. And as everything that
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: we have sown must ripen into harvest in due season
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: and must be reaped, it is idle to lament over
- 2:09:50Speaker 1: the reaping. When it is painful. It may as well
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: be done now as at any future time, since it
- 2:09:57Speaker 1: cannot be evaded, and one once done, it cannot return
- 2:10:01Speaker 1: to trouble us again. Painful karma may therefore well be
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: faced with a joyful heart, as a thing to be
- 2:10:08Speaker 1: gladly worked through and done with. It is better to
- 2:10:12Speaker 1: have it behind us than before us, and every debt
- 2:10:15Speaker 1: paid leaves us with less to pay. Would that the
- 2:10:19Speaker 1: world knew and could feel the strength that comes from
- 2:10:22Speaker 1: this resting on the law. Unfortunately, to most in the
- 2:10:27Speaker 1: Western world it is a mere chimera, and even among Theosophists,
- 2:10:32Speaker 1: belief in karma is more an intellectual assent than a
- 2:10:35Speaker 1: living and fruitful conviction, in the light of which the
- 2:10:38Speaker 1: life is lived. The strength of a belief, says Professor Baine,
- 2:10:44Speaker 1: is measured by its influence on conduct and belief in
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: Karma ought to make the life pure, strong, serene, and glad.
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: Only our own deeds can hinder us. Only our own
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: will confetter us. Once let men recognize this truth, truth,
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: and the hour of their liberation has struck. Nature cannot
- 2:11:04Speaker 1: enslave the soul that by wisdom has gained power and
- 2:11:08Speaker 1: uses both in love. End of Section twelve and conclusion
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: End of Karma by Annie Bessant
