Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Well.
- 0:07Speaker 3: On the day that Yogi Barra helped close out the
- 0:11Speaker 3: old Yankee Stadium seventeen years ago, Yogi Barra Stadium made
- 0:17Speaker 3: some history of its own. Of course, Yogi bear Stadium,
- 0:21Speaker 3: Yogi Berra Museum, created many years ago in honor of Yogi,
- 0:26Speaker 3: who of course got to enjoy that museum up until
- 0:30Speaker 3: he passed in twenty fifteen, and this week marks ten
- 0:35Speaker 3: years since Lawrence Peter Bearra passed away, and Boyle Boy,
- 0:42Speaker 3: the likes of Lindsay Barra, Bob Costas and all the
- 0:45Speaker 3: greats that came through Willie Randolph, Lee Missilli, even a
- 0:50Speaker 3: former Tiger pitcher Jason Grilly and of course Rick Sarona
- 0:54Speaker 3: former catcher himself.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Just to name a few that continue.
- 0:59Speaker 3: The legacy of Yogi Berra by supporting the museum by
- 1:03Speaker 3: being at that field, and of course Yogi Berra Stadium
- 1:06Speaker 3: which was home to the Jackals now home to NJIT.
- 1:10Speaker 3: While we had a very special opportunity this past Sunday
- 1:14Speaker 3: to be.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Part of history and watching a Guinness.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Book of World Records record be broken, take a listen
- 1:24Speaker 3: to how it transpired on Sunday, September twenty one, twenty
- 1:28Speaker 3: twenty five at Yogi Bearra Stadium.
- 1:36Speaker 1: So hello again everyone, This was an official Guinness World
- 1:40Speaker 1: Records attempt for largest game of catch. The mark to
- 1:44Speaker 1: beat was set originally in twenty seventeen in Illinois. That
- 1:50Speaker 1: was nine hundred seventy two pairs. Now I know you
- 1:54Speaker 1: all laughed, but we did indeed have some deductions today.
- 2:01Speaker 1: So that said, I can now announce that today in
- 2:06Speaker 1: Little Falls, New Jersey, USA, you had a total of one.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Pairs.
- 2:18Speaker 1: It's a new Guinness World Record.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Sit play Frank, And they actually did play Frank Sinatra
- 2:28Speaker 3: a little later on, but I'll tell you what that
- 2:31Speaker 3: was special to be part of as Guinness World Records
- 2:33Speaker 3: announcing that those in participation were part of the biggest
- 2:37Speaker 3: catch ever. And I gotta give credit to Anna Seminu
- 2:42Speaker 3: and Rock and Robin and.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Who actually participated in the catch.
- 2:45Speaker 3: And of course for media there then of course Nathan
- 2:48Speaker 3: King of Pin Tripes, Twin Tripe reporters, Chris cave CALEBB
- 2:51Speaker 3: Nick Sing, Billy the Bad Boy, all of us were
- 2:54Speaker 3: there to watch history unfold, and of course coach Daniel McCartin.
- 2:59Speaker 2: But I mentioned Bob Costas and.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I feel like a fitting way to honor Yogi this
- 3:06Speaker 3: week is to play my interview, yes, my interview with
- 3:10Speaker 3: the legendary Bob Costas, who I've known since I was
- 3:13Speaker 3: a little kid, just a little kid.
- 3:20Speaker 2: In George Simon's suite and then at Belmont Park.
- 3:23Speaker 3: So to finally get this on tape and interview a
- 3:27Speaker 3: conversation with Bob Costas, it did mean the world to me,
- 3:33Speaker 3: and I'm proud to share it right now on one
- 3:35Speaker 3: Leg up Alex Garrett's network.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Or here with Bobs yourself. For a long time, what
- 3:44Speaker 2: to mean the record record was.
- 3:45Speaker 5: Bad like this, Well, it's kind of an esoteric record,
- 3:49Speaker 5: but as Yogi himself said, my record will stand until
- 3:55Speaker 5: it's broken, and all records are made to be broken,
- 3:58Speaker 5: even one of those that we didn't know existence. So
- 4:01Speaker 5: we broke that one today to witness this.
- 4:05Speaker 1: What that means would be.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Part of all.
- 4:07Speaker 5: It was fun and don't you know, I don't invest
- 4:10Speaker 5: any tremendous meaning in it except that it was fun
- 4:13Speaker 5: and anytime that you can in some sense celebrate Yogi
- 4:17Speaker 5: as a player and as a person and wealth a
- 4:19Speaker 5: beautiful Yogi Murray Museum. Such good feeling on the part
- 4:22Speaker 5: of everybody here, just a great day and you love baseball.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Take real quick, Well, I don't know that these are
- 4:32Speaker 5: original bots. They're very frustrating sometimes with their lack of
- 4:36Speaker 5: fundamentals in the field and on the basis, and the
- 4:39Speaker 5: bullpen is.
- 4:40Speaker 4: A big question.
- 4:42Speaker 5: I mean said that if Garrett Cole had been healthy
- 4:44Speaker 5: this year and you had Garrett Cole and Max Reed
- 4:47Speaker 5: as a one two, that would cover up any deficiencies.
- 4:51Speaker 5: And they do hit a lot of home runs, and
- 4:53Speaker 5: people say they're too dependent on homers, but you'd rather
- 4:55Speaker 5: have the homers than not.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Thank you, okay, Nat to see two about painting.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Well, that was special.
- 5:03Speaker 3: And of course getting to portray him in twenties eight
- 5:07Speaker 3: at the Viscardi Center alongside Scott Hamilton, who played Jim
- 5:11Speaker 3: Lampley as we did an Olympics theme show, and then
- 5:14Speaker 3: seventeen years later him setting sign me as I get
- 5:17Speaker 3: to interview him one of the people I've grown up really,
- 5:22Speaker 3: I guess you would say, idolizing and certainly working on.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Being, you know, working on my craft.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Watching him at work, whether it was the Olympics, whether
- 5:34Speaker 3: it was the World Series, whether it is him doing
- 5:36Speaker 3: playoff baseball or those interviews you know on the record
- 5:39Speaker 3: with Bob Costa, I mean, there were so many different
- 5:41Speaker 3: things he did that it would especially get a mom
- 5:44Speaker 3: for even a minute.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I'm going to look to get some.
- 5:49Speaker 3: More conversation with him down the road through his team.
- 5:52Speaker 3: But I want to thank Bob Costs personally for wanting
- 5:55Speaker 3: to bring me back to the bullpen area where they
- 5:57Speaker 3: were doing interviews and just a chance to catch up
- 6:01Speaker 3: and have those remarks.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Now.
- 6:03Speaker 3: It also was fitting that after I've talked about her
- 6:06Speaker 3: for many a time on this podcast, the granddaughter of
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yogi Barra, Lindsay Bearra, said, chure, let's do an interview
- 6:14Speaker 3: right now. Just prior to the record being made. She
- 6:18Speaker 3: talked about what it was what it means to have
- 6:21Speaker 3: that record happen right at Yogi bear Steady. All right,
- 6:28Speaker 3: I'm here with the granddaughter Yogi Bara, Lindsay Barra.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Firstly, Yogi's big cats. But I was here back in
- 6:34Speaker 2: two thousand and five for Bob Feller and Yogi Barra.
- 6:37Speaker 2: It's bringing me back right now. What's this mean to you, though, Lindsay.
- 6:41Speaker 4: I am something. First of all, you were here twenty
- 6:42Speaker 4: years ago, so his name has been here for twenty
- 6:44Speaker 4: five years. Twenty six years now, and it's just amazing.
- 6:47Speaker 4: I love that it's just still going so strong even
- 6:50Speaker 4: without Grandpa Yogi and his spirit lives on and it's
- 6:53Speaker 4: just so great to see people coming out to support.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Him today is amazing.
- 6:58Speaker 4: You know, we're gonna break a world record and I can't.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I mean, frost all come together.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Eve Shanean, our movieam director, just really wanted to do
- 7:06Speaker 4: something to commemorate Grandpa's hundredth birthday, you know, and he
- 7:11Speaker 4: was so able to say a lot connect with people
- 7:14Speaker 4: that like people he met and even people he didn't met.
- 7:17Speaker 4: And what better way to connect with people than over
- 7:19Speaker 4: a game of catch? So Eve had this great idea
- 7:22Speaker 4: to try to break this world record, and it's been
- 7:24Speaker 4: six months of planning and here we.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Are a lot of if you others, seventy years ago,
- 7:27Speaker 3: your grandfather was at home Plate and Yankee Stadium more history.
- 7:30Speaker 2: He maintained his honor about that. It's pretty cool.
- 7:33Speaker 4: We you know, again, his spirit lives on and he
- 7:37Speaker 4: inspires people to just do good things and it's it's terrific.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And by the way, his war experience is so well, No,
- 7:42Speaker 3: I mean, you've done that for many years I'm more
- 7:44Speaker 3: of that.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Talk about that as well.
- 7:46Speaker 4: So he volunteered to join the Navy when he turned
- 7:50Speaker 4: eighteen years old, before he had the chance to be drafted.
- 7:53Speaker 4: He knew he wanted to serve his country and you know,
- 7:56Speaker 4: only Grandpa Yogi could be bored in basic training. So
- 7:58Speaker 4: he volunteered for a secret mission ended up being the
- 8:01Speaker 4: rocket boats preparing for the amphibious assault on Normandy. He
- 8:05Speaker 4: was on an LCSs naming graft support small providing cover
- 8:09Speaker 4: fire for our troops going ashore during Indy Day invasion
- 8:11Speaker 4: and later in the invasion of Southern France, you know,
- 8:14Speaker 4: and unlike a lot of folks, he was lucky enough
- 8:17Speaker 4: to come home and go on and live without the
- 8:19Speaker 4: rest of his life.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And today we're going to have to see his plaque
- 8:21Speaker 3: as well.
- 8:22Speaker 2: That's so special, so cool.
- 8:23Speaker 4: It has never left the Hall of Fame since it's
- 8:25Speaker 4: been in there since nineteen seventy two, and it'll be
- 8:27Speaker 4: in the theater for folks to take pictures.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And that's really tools.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Well, Lindsay, welcome to history, right, congratulations, thanks.
- 8:32Speaker 4: You so much for coming, Thank you, thank you.
- 8:35Speaker 2: That was really cool.
- 8:36Speaker 3: And I'll tell you sabahaw he went on and to.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Survive and then go back to live his life.
- 8:41Speaker 5: You know.
- 8:42Speaker 3: He went on to also win ten World Series rings
- 8:45Speaker 3: with the Yankees, So in addition to serving his country,
- 8:47Speaker 3: he really served the New York community behind the plate
- 8:51Speaker 3: as an ambassador and as just an all around amazing
- 8:54Speaker 3: person of the game. Of course, ten World Series rings,
- 8:58Speaker 3: numerous All Star appearances.
- 9:01Speaker 6: And also has loved that Bob Costas cited Yogi's quotes
- 9:09Speaker 6: because you know, it's just that's that was the feel.
- 9:12Speaker 2: It was a historic day, and.
- 9:15Speaker 3: We'll better do it than on a field named for
- 9:18Speaker 3: a very historic person in Yogi bearra and May's legacy
- 9:22Speaker 3: always live on.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Through Lindsay, through Eve who is the executive director of
- 9:26Speaker 2: the Yogi.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Bear Museum, and through all of them, all thousands that
- 9:32Speaker 3: showed up to make the catch happen.
- 9:36Speaker 2: May it be for sure a way to continue Yogi
- 9:41Speaker 2: Bear's legacy.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Yogi's Big Catch a big success. I don't want to
- 9:46Speaker 3: think Billy the bat Boy again for encourage me.
- 9:48Speaker 2: To like reach out, see what we could do.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And sure enough we were there on Sunday as a network,
- 9:54Speaker 3: seeing all our media friends.
- 9:56Speaker 2: And catching up with one of the legends in the process.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Many legends, likely Mazillian and Williaman up.
- 10:02Speaker 3: But one of the broadcasting legends that I've always looked
- 10:05Speaker 3: up to for sure Bob Costs.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And yes he has inspired me to work.
- 10:08Speaker 3: At NBC Sports, and I'm fired up to see if
- 10:11Speaker 3: that's a possibility, especially after this interview. Kind of feel
- 10:15Speaker 3: inspired again. So we'll keep those over to that on
- 10:18Speaker 3: One look up Alex Sports.
- 10:20Speaker 2: But there it is ten years ago.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Yogi Bear passes away, but his legacy doesn't, his impact doesn't,
- 10:28Speaker 3: and for sure the history continues in Yogi's name. There's
- 10:34Speaker 3: nothing better than that in Montclair, New Jersey. One look
- 10:40Speaker 3: up Alex Sports. Yanks could clinch a playoff birth tonight.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Why not? Right? Why not do it again? Why not
- 10:46Speaker 2: make it to the playoffs again?
- 10:48Speaker 3: I think the Yanks have the division in their sites though,
- 10:51Speaker 3: and so we'll have to see how this week plays out.
- 10:53Speaker 3: But what a chance, what a chance this week to
- 10:56Speaker 3: not only get the playoff birth within the best and
- 11:00Speaker 3: I think still the best record in baseball.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And that kid who, as REGI said, that kid.
- 11:10Speaker 3: With the hat on me, little Alex, if you will,
- 11:14Speaker 3: would be as fired up as this adult Alex would
- 11:17Speaker 3: be if the Yanks were to go back and go
- 11:20Speaker 3: further and farther.
- 11:22Speaker 2: And I want to cite Johonnett.
- 11:24Speaker 3: You know she mentioned now it's incredible how they cut
- 11:26Speaker 3: DJ and then moved Jazz in the same week. That
- 11:30Speaker 3: week that the Yanks cut DJ and move Jazz a
- 11:33Speaker 3: second changed everything in the Bronx.
- 11:37Speaker 2: And that's a big credit to me.
- 11:39Speaker 3: That's a big credit to Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone's leadership.
- 11:44Speaker 3: I know you have issues with them, but let's be honest.
- 11:48Speaker 3: They made some drastic moves that have made changes for
- 11:51Speaker 3: the better. And Capilero at short, oh my god, what
- 11:55Speaker 3: an injection into the light up on an injection. Look,
- 11:58Speaker 3: we love both bee, but sometimes to alternate betwea Miccobeiro
- 12:04Speaker 3: just works.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And I don't know.
- 12:08Speaker 3: I think we're in the position to get more than
- 12:10Speaker 3: just a wild card berth Division and I think their
- 12:13Speaker 3: eyes should be set on the best record in the
- 12:16Speaker 3: American League.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Why didn't you like to see that?
- 12:19Speaker 3: After all we've been through this year, losing a seven
- 12:22Speaker 3: game lead in June only to come back strong at
- 12:25Speaker 3: the end.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And finish out how they started the season, which was
- 12:30Speaker 2: really strong.
- 12:32Speaker 3: I mean a nine home run weekend to begin the season,
- 12:37Speaker 3: then another nine home run game in August, and they're
- 12:42Speaker 3: getting their wins on doubles and hit singles too. So
- 12:50Speaker 3: let's see what happens and Benard the closer position. I
- 12:54Speaker 3: think Devin's more comfortable where he's at.
- 12:56Speaker 2: And made some changes.
- 12:59Speaker 3: All after Yogi's big catch. Let's have a big run
- 13:06Speaker 3: at this. If we're the Yankees a week, Let's be
- 13:08Speaker 3: inspired to make that run for only the wild card,
- 13:13Speaker 3: but then the American League East and then the best
- 13:15Speaker 3: record in the American League.
- 13:16Speaker 2: It's still in sights. It's still in our sights. I
- 13:19Speaker 2: feel it.
- 13:20Speaker 3: It is, as Aaron Boon says, right in front of us,
- 13:23Speaker 3: and to put a button on all of this, I
- 13:26Speaker 3: know my dad and Yogi we're looking down at all
- 13:29Speaker 3: of us watching in the sun splash Yogi Bear Stadium.
- 13:34Speaker 3: And I'll tell you why my dad and I felt
- 13:36Speaker 3: my dad's presence. Not only did we play catch and
- 13:39Speaker 3: he taught me how to, you know, play ball when
- 13:40Speaker 3: I was three years old, but he also brought me
- 13:45Speaker 3: to Montclair State University, brought me to Yogi Barry Museum
- 13:48Speaker 3: to meet Bob Feller.
- 13:49Speaker 2: About twenty years ago.
- 13:52Speaker 3: And that moment stuck with me, and watching the Jackals
- 13:56Speaker 3: play a little bit at the museum outside of the
- 13:59Speaker 3: museum next stuck with me. So to be on that
- 14:02Speaker 3: field twenty years later it felt full circle. It felt
- 14:08Speaker 3: like I was continuing the journey that my dad had
- 14:11Speaker 3: set for me when I was really young, and at
- 14:16Speaker 3: the same time blazing my own path, expanding my digital
- 14:22Speaker 3: footprint beyond just New York City but into New Jersey
- 14:27Speaker 3: and into multiple circles.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And to be recognized for that means a ton.
- 14:34Speaker 3: So Thanks Lindsey, Thanks Eve, Thanks Anna, Thanks Billy the
- 14:37Speaker 3: bat Boy, Thanks Robin, Thanks Nithan c. K. King of Pinstripes,
- 14:43Speaker 3: twins ripe Reporters, Coach McCartin for making me feel included
- 14:48Speaker 3: in this weekend's festivities.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Oh and Nick thing is well, how can I get
- 14:51Speaker 2: for it? Nixing as well.
- 14:54Speaker 3: A very special weekend at Yogi's Big Catch
