- 0:58SPEAKER_03: Indeed, indeed, indeed.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: For joining us Outdoor Journal Radio, the podcast imaginable by all of his Peter Bowman.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Hi.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: Thank you for coming.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: You're welcome.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: Uh today's show.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: We're going to talk about uh our last shoot where because we were not able to do an on the road again.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: We had a rain delay.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: We had a rain delay, and uh consequently, we had to move it into this time slot.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: And consequently, because of all of that, I got docked.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: I got docked a day's pay because I'm out of uniform today.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: So I don't think that should be my fault because this was not scheduled.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: True enough.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: True day.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because everything is scheduled.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: This was not scheduled.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: I come in this morning, Natalie attired, not ready to do the podcast, and now here I am getting docked because I don't have my uniform.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: I at McDonald's they don't do that.
- 1:52SPEAKER_04: Oh, they don't?
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Well, they send you home, wouldn't they?
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: You have to have your uniform on.
- 1:56SPEAKER_05: Okay, maybe they should send me home then.
- 1:57SPEAKER_05: I'll take that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_05: I'm out of here, Mofos.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: Uh yes, we were at Key Harbor all of last week.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: We're gonna talk to you about that.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: What a wonderful part of the uh province.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, very different.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: Like almost like a different world out there.
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: Maybe we'll get into it after, but it's pretty cool.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: That's on the shores of Georgian Bay, for those of you who don't know.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, Georgia Bay in itself is just a wonderful fishing anomaly.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it is the only way I can describe it.
- 2:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Um she's big water, buddy.
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: Oh, as we saw.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: Holy crap.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, so we will be talking about that here shortly.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: However, uh, in the meantime, the one of the reasons, one of the other reasons why I'm out of uniform, because I did come in without my uniform today.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Uh, I went into the store and I looked to see if I could uh mitigate the damages that I was gonna have to my my income by stealing a shirt.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: That makes a lot of sense.
- 2:54SPEAKER_05: That's why I went in there for the purposes of stealing a shirt.
- 2:58SPEAKER_05: Steal from yourself.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Dean, can you get security to get him out of here?
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: We can't be having people uh stealing from us.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: And I'm telling you, that is a poor excuse for a store right now.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: There is nothing there.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: Thank God that season 40 is well, well underway and performing nicely on Global Television Network coast to coast to coast, 8 a.m.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: uh across the nation, except the folks out there on the left side.
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: They are 10 to 10 30.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: That way.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: They're special.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: Actually, it's on the right side of us right now.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: Right there.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: Right there.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: I pointed there in the first place.
- 3:29SPEAKER_05: That's correct.
- 3:30SPEAKER_05: That would have been the right, my right.
- 3:32SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: Maybe in the TV it's left.
- 3:34SPEAKER_05: Maybe they got it reversed in the TV.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: Maybe you never know.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: Uh as well as uh on the fishing uh WFN World Fishing Network, and as well as on a sportsman's channel, and on our YouTube channel as well.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: And our YouTube channel.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: I keep forgetting that.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: I think that's it.
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: Don't forget that.
- 3:51SPEAKER_04: That's uh kind of a big deal right now.
- 3:54SPEAKER_04: That's the future right now.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: That's where all the people who are watching this are.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: We gotta talk to those people, see?
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Right on our people.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: I'm good.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: I'm good with that.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: Um, listener feedback.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: By the way, um.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: No.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: I'll get to that in a moment.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: We'll leave that one alone.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: These random thoughts come into my head, eh?
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: They just Oh, trust me.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: After four free, what, 30 something years?
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: Trust me.
- 4:21SPEAKER_04: I get it.
- 4:22SPEAKER_04: Trust me.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: Just random thoughts.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: Random interrupts everything.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: Boom.
- 4:27SPEAKER_04: Doesn't matter what he's doing.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: Running a topwater bait on there.
- 4:30SPEAKER_04: He's just about to get a hit.
- 4:31SPEAKER_04: Oh, by the way, Peter.
- 4:33SPEAKER_04: Oh, forget that.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: Listen, yes, yeah.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: My performance was not very good this past week.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: I want to talk about that.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: You mentioned it.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: I was I was off.
- 4:42SPEAKER_05: I'd gone off gone off a bit.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: Listener feedback in response uh to our video of Ange catching the smolly with a baby duck in its mouth.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 4:56SPEAKER_06: St.
- 4:56SPEAKER_06: Clair River.
- 4:57SPEAKER_06: St.
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: Clair River.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: Uh this is from at St.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: Lawrence River Guide via Instagram.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: Holy mackerel, we're getting them from everywhere.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: Instagram.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: That's good.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: We got some Instagram followers, buddy.
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: Says very cool, guys.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: I had a smallmouth spit up a mouse earlier this season.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: I also had a walleye cough up a perch and I tossed it back in the water and it swam away.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: That's sad.
- 5:23SPEAKER_04: That's a freshly caught, uh freshly eaten perch by that.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Pretty fresh, too.
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: I mean, it still had the It was dead, but it was it was fresh, barely dead.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: It was not dead.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: He's not dead yet.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: But he was definitely not uh swinging away.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: No, he wasn't crawling around in the net when we found him, that's for sure.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: That was cool.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: That was like we both were very surprised at that one because you don't know.
- 5:46SPEAKER_04: I mean, as many fish as we've caught, really, there's not a whole lot of surprises, right?
- 5:51SPEAKER_04: As a rule.
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: I mean, you see some pike with other pike in their mouth or a white fish or something like you had in Alberta.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: But it doesn't happen a whole whole lot, especially in the smaller lakes, like on uh you know the smaller northern lakes and that.
- 6:04SPEAKER_04: But you know, this is big water.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: St.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: Lawrence guide here, river guide, he's on big water, obviously.
- 6:10SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: It'd be uh I'm sure it happens more often than we know because you've seen it in the spring with the little uh ducklings following their parents around the water, and you'd look at him and say, My God, that is a perfect target when you think about it.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: A pike or a musky or bass or a bass in this case, right?
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: And I just noticed that fish has got a gut on him as well.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: He might have another one in there.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Well, I'm thinking that's possible now that I look at it, right?
- 6:38SPEAKER_04: Because that's out, but look.
- 6:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: Well, like I mean, he's eating a lot.
- 6:43SPEAKER_04: That fish is eating a ton, he or she.
- 6:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:46SPEAKER_04: It's a good one.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Anyways, thanks uh for allowing us to uh recall that moment.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was fun.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: That was very cool.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: Conservation corner.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: Not cool.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: This falls under the not cool, not so cool.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: Uh we're talking about invasive species like the grass carp.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: Uh we are in mid-season right now as far as being able to.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: I would think I would think right now would be the peak season for scouting around and finding these things in shells.
- 7:21SPEAKER_04: You'd think that that would be where they would be, you know, scouring the surface.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: I guess.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: Speaking of invasive species, see my mind.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: I knew there was a reason.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: It was going.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: We caught an invasive species this week.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Right, right, right.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Nick, we'll have to insert the footage here.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: We got some we got a great video of that.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Did we?
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we did.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Did we get a good only thing I successfully was able to hook all week?
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: Thank you, Daniel.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Um, we when I got there, I asked the um the lodge owner if they had Gobies there because we wanted to sort of figure out what we were gonna use for plastics and whatnot.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: And he said, I I don't think so.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: I but I don't know for sure.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: We haven't heard anything, but um we're not sure.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: And so with that in mind, we decided not to use Gobi plastics, anything that looked like Gobies if they weren't there.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: And lo and behold, on the second day, I caught a Gobi.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: Same size as your friggin' bait.
- 8:28SPEAKER_03: On a Ned.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's bringing it Gobi.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: So, anyways, yeah, so you proved it.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: You proved it to the world.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: Our Gobies in the um Key River area uh area.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: And we were aware of the process that you have to do because of websites like invasivescarp.ca.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: We disposed of it.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Um, there's a lot of things you have to know when you catch something like that, so it's good to be read up on it.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like knowing the regs.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: You can't put those back.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: You can't put invasive species.
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: It is illegal to put a gobi back if you catch it and bring it in the boat somehow.
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: Now, is that in all jurisdictions that have gobies?
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: All Ontario.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know about uh now I did just think of something.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: What's that?
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: We put it in a bag intending to throw it in the garbage.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Is that still in the boat?
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Yummy.
- 9:20SPEAKER_05: Yummy.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Where in boat should that be in the boat, Nick?
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Wait, I don't think it is.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: I went through the boat this morning.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, good.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: I may have I was in charge of disposing of the Gobi.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, so you disposed of it?
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: I believe I'm I I I think so.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: Should be nice and ripe by now.
- 9:37SPEAKER_03: Because we don't want to leave anything stinky in the in the bays, right?
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: Hell no.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: We don't want to like leave No one's ever done that before.
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: No, we don't want to do that and stick up the whole place.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: That's a law.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: A whole place or best had to run out because of the stinkiness.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: Something died.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: Something uh rat died or something, maybe back then.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was a rat, all right.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: It was all rat for me.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: It was all right.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:02SPEAKER_05: Do you want to tell that story?
- 10:04SPEAKER_05: Do I want to?
- 10:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 10:05SPEAKER_04: Sure, I'll do a quick story.
- 10:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, we've said it before in the podcast.
- 10:07SPEAKER_04: Well, that's time good again.
- 10:09SPEAKER_04: We're out on the on the road, and Ans and I, and I can't remember who was on the road, and we and Monique called Ans and something something died in this friggin' place.
- 10:16SPEAKER_04: I don't know what the hell happened, but there's something dead, and we can't find it.
- 10:19SPEAKER_04: And then then everybody was scouring.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: Dean was here too.
- 10:22SPEAKER_04: Because I don't know where you and I were, but uh anyways, uh we got back, long story short, I had parked my truck.
- 10:31SPEAKER_04: Rarely do I do it.
- 10:32SPEAKER_04: It's probably the only time I've done it.
- 10:34SPEAKER_04: I parked my truck in one of the bays because we took the boat out of the bays.
- 10:37SPEAKER_04: And uh and I had been fishing the weekend before, the week day but the day before.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: I had a nice old pike that I kept and threw the carcass in a garbage bag in the back of my truck, and lo and behold, the boys found that sitting there in the back of the truck in that inside there after a few days, and it was pretty rancid.
- 10:55SPEAKER_04: So, and I got shit for that one pretty good too.
- 10:59SPEAKER_05: I was supposed to go in the bin.
- 11:00SPEAKER_05: It didn't quite make it.
- 11:01SPEAKER_05: The bin's only 40 feet away.
- 11:03SPEAKER_05: It didn't make it.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: How long would that have remained in the back of your truck if if they hadn't discovered?
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: Because it was a couple of days already.
- 11:09SPEAKER_03: I wouldn't do it.
- 11:10SPEAKER_04: I would have smelled it at my house or something.
- 11:11SPEAKER_04: Well, you don't park your truck in your house.
- 11:13SPEAKER_04: But you smell outside, you still smell that as bad, right?
- 11:16SPEAKER_04: But they're not with no cover on the no tunnel cover, so it'd be just uh I'd I'd have dust uh I'd have found it.
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: So they're all frozen now.
- 11:23SPEAKER_04: Every time I get one, I freeze it.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: Uh if I can find room in the freezer, because my wife's a psycho for filling up fridges and freezers.
- 11:31SPEAKER_05: So yeah, I keep them pretty frozen now.
- 11:34SPEAKER_05: Anyways, that's all brought to you by the invasive species.
- 11:37SPEAKER_05: Invasive carp.ca.
- 11:39SPEAKER_05: Get your pike, your snotty pike stories there.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: No, seriously.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: Seriously, though.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: If you are out um and you're a shallow water fisherman, especially, and you're gonna be in those back pays, uh, arm yourself with all of the information you need to identify a grass carp and then let the authorities know immediately.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: All that information is available at invasivecarp.ca.
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: Download it, keep it with you, and uh be part of the team.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: In the news brought to you by J and B Cycle, the outdoor superstore.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, outboard motors and and and uh packages boats and you name it, they got it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: Wonderful place.
- 12:20SPEAKER_04: We had a nice little Princecraft this week, too, by the way.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: A second Princecraft.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: So a second Prince Craft.
- 12:26SPEAKER_04: Well, do tell.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: Well, uh, we'll talk about it on our Key Harbor talk, but we uh Key Harbor Lodge actually offered a nice, beautiful 16-foot uh Tilver Princecraft.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: So in the news, I mean it's been on our uh subject list here for the last few months.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: Um the what impact is F forward-facing sonar having on tournament fishing?
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: Because as you know, there's been all kinds of stories out there, there's been changes of rules because banning of it, banning of it, and then reducing the amount of it you can have, and only on days to start in a T and no ones it's crazy, yeah.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: Anyways, uh researchers did a study, and um they uh a study uh uh that that used LIS, which is live imaging sonar, so not just forward facing.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: This I'm I'm assuming would also be side scanning and everything like that.
- 13:24SPEAKER_05: That's not live though.
- 13:24SPEAKER_05: No, no, it's I think it's forward facing it.
- 13:27SPEAKER_05: Why why are they called LIS?
- 13:29SPEAKER_05: I don't know why they would do that.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Maybe maybe because it's not just forward facing now, it might be like the encompassing like the 360 stuff that Garmin has and the whole deal, maybe.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Maybe.
- 13:40SPEAKER_04: But I don't think they banned, I don't think they banned 360.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: No, but you're limited to the transducers, aren't you?
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: It's just the live scope, Hummingbird, and Laurent's all are forward facing is what they're stopping you to use it.
- 13:52SPEAKER_04: Everything else is a go-ahead.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: So they're still using 360.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Well, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 13:59SPEAKER_04: Because it's not see a 360 image is a a blip and then a still.
- 14:03SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 14:03SPEAKER_04: And then the blip and then a still.
- 14:05SPEAKER_04: So it's not live per se.
- 14:07SPEAKER_04: I don't I get I get you're saying you shouldn't be using it, but but are you sure about that?
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm 99.9, but I could be corrected.
- 14:14SPEAKER_04: I I I was wrong about a pike in the back of my trunk.
- 14:17SPEAKER_04: It wouldn't be the first time, my friend.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: Let me tell you right now.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: Stanky old Pike.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Anyways, during uh the 2025 Bass Pro Tour events, anglers were only allowed to use LIS uh during one of the days' three fishing periods, allowing comparisons between periods with and without this technology.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: Uh the study examined whether LIS increased the number of fish caught, the size of fish caught, and the habitats where it was most effective.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: Uh results showed that LIS, or what we know as forward-facing sonar, increased catch rates in some fisheries, sometimes substantially, but had no effect in others.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: Uh seven of the eight uh events studied saw no change in size of fish caught, suggesting that LIS did not provide professional anglers with an advantage in catching larger fish.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: That's interesting.
- 15:12SPEAKER_03: Uh fish caught using LAS were more likely to be found in deeper open water habitats that uh than around shallow uh complex cover such as vegetation or docks.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: Well, I think we kind of know that.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: That was an obvious.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: Uh the findings suggested that LAS may be more effective in deeper, less structured fisheries, while shallow water fisheries with more cover may reduce its advantage.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: Interesting.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: Yes, because even knowing that, and we know that, but we're still using it in shallow water.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: Oh, well, it's very effective.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: The perspective in shallow water is kind of crazy.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: So they're saying that they noticed no difference in in the uh shallow water.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: There was no advantage to using it in shallow water, according to the pros.
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: Uh the study conducted by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Major League Fishing provides baseline information on how LIS affects angler success across different fisheries.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: Researchers say the long-term effect of LIS on fish populations requires continued monitoring.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Findings uh may help fisheries managers develop regulations that balance technology innovation with sustainable fisheries management.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 16:31SPEAKER_04: So that kind of means that last little bit means that they might be making rules for forward-facing sonar on your boat versus somebody else without it, right?
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: Is that what that's saying?
- 16:39SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm I'm thinking.
- 16:40SPEAKER_04: I'm thinking about it.
- 16:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think they're probably you don't get to do this.
- 16:43SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: I think they're probably compiling this now.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, I didn't really think of that when they they banned it on certain days and not others.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: It does kind of give you the data to know exactly what like advantage it has.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: It is kind of nice in a way, like that they've done that.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: But I mean, uh so far so good in the sense of it's not really and these guys are the best of the best.
- 17:06SPEAKER_04: Okay, it doesn't let me they can fish both with and without it.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: So um well, then that being the case, and we let's say let's say that that is the case, then I would think that L I S or FFS, whatever you want to call it, uh would be more of an advantage to less experienced anglers.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: But experienced enough to understand how it works, how the technology works.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: I'm thinking.
- 17:37SPEAKER_04: These young guns coming up now, man, they're so good with it.
- 17:40SPEAKER_04: Like it's very scary.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: That's what I mean.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: It brings them up to speed quicker, probably, right?
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: The learning curve is yeah.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: The pros are the pros.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: The high elite top-end guys, you could take away all of this stuff and they're still going to figure out how to catch a fish.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, without a doubt.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: The the younger novice angler coming up the ranks, I think this technology is better served for them in terms of catching fish.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: That's what I meant by that.
- 18:12SPEAKER_04: Guy like, you know, like Trey McKinney is a perfect example, though.
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: Everybody's thinking, oh yeah, yeah, I guess this forward-facing sonar, and then the kid just kicks ass on as soon as you turn that machine off, he's just as good without it as with, right?
- 18:25SPEAKER_04: So I think some guys just are.
- 18:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh if they're growing up with a lot of tournament anglers, they grow up with tournament fishing, right?
- 18:32SPEAKER_04: Our Johnston butt brothers here.
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: Lynn, we fished against Lynn 20, 30 years ago, 40 years, and they they've always been in it.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: So they've fished from, you know, beating the banks when they're really, really young to to now doing the most uh uh technological advancement in fishing.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: So I think there are a lot of them get a lot of maybe don't get enough credit on their no forward-facing sonar fishing abilities because they are probably pretty good if they're making it to that level anyway.
- 18:56SPEAKER_04: Oh, no question about that.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: This episode is brought to you by Sale.

- 19:28SPEAKER_03: It's uh sitting at uh right now at fishingcanada.com if you want to read the whole story without us idiots kind of interrupting the thing.
- 19:37SPEAKER_04: Come on now.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: President included.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: Uh what do we got now?
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Sure, let's do that one.
- 19:46SPEAKER_04: I like that.
- 19:47SPEAKER_04: Submitted by Grant Party via email.
- 19:50SPEAKER_04: So there's no uh qualification here in the on the email up front of it.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: But that's I got a feeling we're we're we've got the it's a budgetary issue here.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: I think we're tightening the old belt on giving stuff away.
- 20:01SPEAKER_04: So Mr.
- 20:02SPEAKER_04: Dean's been told by somebody up front as to ease up on the YouTube.
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: I cannot confirm or deny.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: It's just that what makes you think this?
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: Well, it's too like every week now.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: It's by email, by smoke signal, by everything else, except you're smoking something, I'll tell you that right now.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Except that.
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: But that's okay.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm a team player.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: It's the same people on YouTube are who are writing in.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: We need some new some new people.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, people are gonna be like, there's gonna be people with a lot of merch that they haven't paid for, you know?
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: And I I went in there to get, I was gonna pay for it and I couldn't find any.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're saying they're out there wearing stuff that they haven't paid for.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: All right, I get it.
- 20:46SPEAKER_04: From Grant Party via email.
- 20:48SPEAKER_04: Hey guys, I fish out of a 16-foot aluminum boat with a 90-horse.
- 20:53SPEAKER_04: And I've always what's the meaning?
- 20:54SPEAKER_04: That's just a beautiful setup.
- 20:55SPEAKER_04: That's a big uh power plant for that six.
- 20:58SPEAKER_04: That goes good, doesn't it?
- 20:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, big old tiller boat, probably.
- 21:02SPEAKER_04: Wow, 16, maybe not a tiller, anyway.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: And I've always wanted to get out on the Great Lakes.
- 21:06SPEAKER_04: You guys are always talking about the incredible smallmouth fishing on Lake Ontario, and I hear about those giant muskies on Georgian Bay.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: It looks it and it looks unreal.
- 21:15SPEAKER_04: But honestly, I don't know if my boat is enough for water like that.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: Am I asking for trouble, or is it just a matter of picking up the right days and and areas?
- 21:23SPEAKER_04: I'd love to hear your advice for someone who's never fished big water before.
- 21:27SPEAKER_04: That's a good one.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: That's that's probably a big concern for a lot of people, right?
- 21:31SPEAKER_04: A lot of people own 16-foot boats or smaller.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: I think 16 is right at the that uh no no pun intended, the tipping point.
- 21:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the tipping point, mega death.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: I think that's kind of you know because you can pick your days, there's no doubt about it.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: But these big waters, like Lake Ontario or Georgia Bay, any of them uh here on Michigan, any of the big lakes, the the Great Lakes, they can turn on you it's a drop of a Real fast.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: They can get on real fast.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: Real fast.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: So meaning that if you decide to to venture out and you're and I don't care what the period is, but let's say you're a half hour from safety because it's a nice looking water out there.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: It's beautiful.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: It's flat.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Let's go, right?
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: So you're half you've done a half hour trip out to wherever you're going.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: It could, it's very conceivable that that water could turn ugly enough that you cannot make that half hour trip back in a 16-foot boat.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: They've never seen it in a in a 20-foot boat.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: So I would hate to give anybody advice or encouragement that it's okay if you pick your days.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: I think 16-foot is the cutoff point.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: It doesn't mean it's not a very fishable boat, doesn't mean you can't go out and venture out in water.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: But we're talking, we're talking here the big open water, the Great Lakes.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: I just don't think a 16-foot boat should wander.
- 23:03SPEAKER_03: I would say anywhere.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: Well, for sure you have to be you have to have visual contact with your shoreline.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: For sure, for sure.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: No doubt about it.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: But beyond that, I I just don't think it should be outside of bays.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: You shouldn't go into the body of this wave.
- 23:22SPEAKER_04: Like the open water of like the open water of Lake Ontario.
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: People have no idea, but it there's 10 foot plus waves there all the time.
- 23:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:30SPEAKER_04: And they're whitecapping.
- 23:31SPEAKER_04: Well, that's going to wipe out anything.
- 23:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, there's not just a small boat and all that.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: So you just get like we were just like we'll talk about in a minute here from Key Harbor.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: That's a great spot because we have another problem to worry about, but it's very well protected.
- 23:44SPEAKER_04: So you go down the Key River and it's all islands and everything.
- 23:46SPEAKER_04: So there's a very nice form of protection there.
- 23:49SPEAKER_04: Now you have to watch out for rocks.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: Now you have to know where you're, you know, the where you're going, the channels and all that stuff.
- 23:54SPEAKER_04: So um, so what I mean, maybe the weather apps, the windy apps are a are a big thing.
- 24:00SPEAKER_04: Because wind is the thing that's going to kill you.
- 24:02SPEAKER_04: Nothing else is going to kill you out there is the wind, right?
- 24:04SPEAKER_04: Um I'd say on on Lake Ontario, boys, maybe like a 15 steady would be really pushing it with a 16 foot 15k well.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: Were you two not in that scenario this past week?
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Out in the two, yeah.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: We were still sheltered and we were putting.
- 24:23SPEAKER_04: Like we were We were very smart about it in a sense of waves and rocks.
- 24:28SPEAKER_04: So we just didn't want to drive the boat fast.
- 24:30SPEAKER_04: So we just drove it at trolling basically a fast, a musky trolling speed sort of thing like that.
- 24:35SPEAKER_04: Um and we had to go a distance, but that was still not in the open part, too, right?
- 24:40SPEAKER_04: There was still some breaking of the waves, but these rock formations and all that stuff.
- 24:44SPEAKER_04: So but yeah, we had a 16-footer and uh and didn't feel threatened at all.
- 24:48SPEAKER_04: But if the water would have got big in a hurry, we would have been you know scared shit, less for sure on that one.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: So um 60 with a 16 with a 90.
- 24:57SPEAKER_04: It's a good boat, it's it's seaworthy, it does blah blah blah.
- 25:00SPEAKER_04: But as Ann said, Lake Ontario in the open water, Lake Simcoe in the open water, Lake Erie in the open water.
- 25:08SPEAKER_04: You better maybe pick your destination of upwind, knowing that the forecast is saying, okay, if something happens, I can at least drive trolling speed back towards with the wind, back towards my launching point, maybe.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: You know, that works sometimes.
- 25:21SPEAKER_04: I've done that before in the sense uh you can still somewhat make it back at a very slow speed if they're not breaking over top.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: Well, that's what I was gonna say.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: Sometimes it's worse when you've got that as a tailwind.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: Especially in the short boat, because it'll drive the nose of that boat.
- 25:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, I'm I'm saying trolling speed.
- 25:40SPEAKER_04: I'm just saying you just barely get up over that wave, and yeah, just be careful out there.
- 25:45SPEAKER_04: But don't deny if it's a calm day, never deny yourself of the eastern basin of Lake Ontario for walleye or smallmouth bass, ridiculously good fishing.
- 25:56SPEAKER_04: George and Bay, where we were, all species, fantastic fishing.
- 26:00SPEAKER_04: Lake Simcoe, smallmouth galore.
- 26:02SPEAKER_04: I mean, everything there's big water is good.
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: Just be very, very careful, cognizant of the winds.
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: That's all.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: Hopefully that answers your question.
- 26:11SPEAKER_03: Speaking of winds and open water and all kinds of fun, uh, we're gonna talk to you now about a key harbor lodge, place where we spent the last week uh shooting a fish in Canada show.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: And we were confronted with uh a bit of wind, we were confronted with a lot of rain, and we were confronted with a tremendous amount of sun.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: We had all three all jam-packed into three days.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:37SPEAKER_04: And let's add in the obstacles in the water.
- 26:41SPEAKER_04: There's hard, rock, hard granite obstacles.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you caress.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a little bit gentle, very gentle caress with one.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, and no doubt.
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: We we did two.
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: We just barely got on one, and then Dean just moved in the boat.
- 26:54SPEAKER_04: We just uh we just troller motored off of it.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: So very, very close to it.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: So um, what a place though.
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: If you've not been uh to Georgian Bay, I mean that that's just one the the key is just one um of the many areas um that are just fish attracting machines.
- 27:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, that whole bay is just everywhere you go.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: It's crazy.
- 27:16SPEAKER_03: And big fish, as a rule.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, musky anglers know I would I would say Georgian Bay is probably in the top five.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: When you talk to musky anglers, for sure, where would you want to go to catch a trophy uh muskie?
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: I think Georgian Bay would be in the top five.
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: But for smallmouth bass, for walleye, for pike, for just about any species, it is a fish factory.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: And I think in a lot of cases, uh pretty much ignored by most anglers.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:47SPEAKER_04: I'd have to say that a lot of people seem to avoid it.
- 27:49SPEAKER_04: I mean, I don't know.
- 27:51SPEAKER_04: It is intimidating.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: Like it is when you hear these like us talking right now about all the rocks, you better know your navigation and you better be staying close to the channels and all that kind of stuff.
- 27:59SPEAKER_04: So it is kind of intimidating, but but if you get beyond that intimidation factor, it is such a beautiful piece of water and fish-filled, again, says, but it's gorgeous up.
- 28:09SPEAKER_04: It's a different world when you're out in your boat on there.
- 28:11SPEAKER_04: You're looking around, just saying, Oh my god, this is that every every corner you go around is a new well, that spot you got the buddy took you to.
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: He said it was like paradise.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: It was like uh the Jurassic Park of fishing.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: It was that unique and different and and hidden.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: And nobody, I'm sure nobody, other than him and his buddy, I'm sure nobody would be going up there.
- 28:35SPEAKER_04: Interesting story about him, you told me, that he's been fishing for how many years?
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: 20, whatever.
- 28:41SPEAKER_04: And he knows it really well, and he still found a rock before.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: Oh, he found a beauty rock.
- 28:46SPEAKER_03: But he made no qualms about it.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: He says, I do know every rock in here because I've had at least one encounter with it.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: So as soon as we got in there, we heard kaboom.
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: Oh boy.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: And he and this guy's guiding me into this place.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, look out.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, hilarious.
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, but he had no or very limited electronics.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: None or very limited.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: No, no electric motor.
- 29:09SPEAKER_04: He had a kicker in the back.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: Because on the way up, we were running through some of these incredibly tight back channels, and I I'm there's all kinds of water.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: And yet he's got the motor all tilted up and and easy.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, really?
- 29:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:25SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: So he did all of this without without the uh use of electronics, obviously.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: But he found his way back into this world that has probably never seen other than him and his buddies, never seen anybody else.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: It's that west crazy, yeah.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: Like you and I would have never found it.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: Not in a million years.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: So wow.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: Anyways, that's just part of the allure of that whole Georgian Bay area, because every turn you make is is is uh for you, it'll be a unique experience, no doubt about it.
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: We we Dean and I did uh a run from if anybody knows the the area, we did a little 16-footer and we we did the run from Key Harbor Lodge out and then we went south and then went up into the Henve Inlet like to about 80% uh to the back end of that.
- 30:12SPEAKER_04: That was a beautiful run as well, just from from you know you know getting towards the open water, going through the main channel, then turning back into the east, and then start going through all the in like the stuff you were looking at right there.
- 30:23SPEAKER_04: It was just it's such a cool, a cool area.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: The the key about Georgian Bay and anything like that is they're very well marked.
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: The main channels are very well marked.
- 30:33SPEAKER_04: So if you know what you're doing and look at, you don't even need a GPS, although we would highly, highly recommend a GPS.
- 30:40SPEAKER_04: Um you can navigate through the channels and all that stuff.
- 30:43SPEAKER_04: The beauty of a GPS is you can run your tracks once, and if it's safe, then you can just stay on your tracks.
- 30:48SPEAKER_04: You don't have to worry about where the buoys are exactly, as long as you know it's a safe route.
- 30:52SPEAKER_04: And if you're going into a little area that's not marked, you you can you know run in really slow and then you'd have that mark mark, that track laid there.
- 31:00SPEAKER_04: So there's a very definite advantage to a GPS and an area like that, but it's it's well marked, well buoyed up and marked.
- 31:07SPEAKER_03: I think that's when you can really uh enjoy that fishery is with with with some kind of charting.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 31:15SPEAKER_04: It's rare in most boats, most boats now have them, right?
- 31:18SPEAKER_04: Most people have them nowadays.
- 31:19SPEAKER_04: So you should have it for sure.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: And we I don't know, in three days, I'm gonna probably say we saw ten boats.
- 31:29SPEAKER_04: Not a lot, eh?
- 31:31SPEAKER_04: Not a lot.
- 31:31SPEAKER_03: I'm thinking ten boats, maybe in three days, yeah, maximum.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: So you got this vast 30,000 islands they claim it has in that in that area.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: But um, you've got this vast body of water that does not get used as much as uh it should be.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: And it's a great opportunity because it's a short little what three and a half, four-hour drive from Toronto.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: From GTA, yeah.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: From the GTA area.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: So it's not like we're it's a million miles away.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: Very easy to access um and loaded with big fish.
- 32:02SPEAKER_03: Just loaded with big fish.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: Now, the place we were staying at was Key Harbor Lodge.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: What makes this one kind of unique for us is that um it's not a fly to, it's a boat to.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: So you you the only way you can access it, there is no road, no roadway, nothing, no backwoods, bush track, nothing to get there.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: You have to access it by water only, and it conveniently sits right at the mouth of the Key River.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: Like right at it's the last piece of property sitting on the key, which is kind of cool.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: Uh so you but your boat in um right uh right on Highway 69.
- 32:43SPEAKER_04: So right, you you literally you're driving up north and then boom, there's two marinas right there.
- 32:48SPEAKER_04: You put your out in the middle nowhere.
- 32:49SPEAKER_04: There's two marinas.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: You can go either side.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: That's the Key River.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: And then you're 10 kilometers away by boat to to where the lodge is.
- 32:56SPEAKER_04: And and if you don't have your own boat, the lodge rents boats and they leave them there for you.
- 33:01SPEAKER_04: So when you get there, you just park your vehicle, you pay for your parking, and you go down, pack the boat, start it up, and then go out to the lodge from there.
- 33:09SPEAKER_04: It's the lodge's boats.
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: So one thing I found kind of odd for that type of place is there was no live bait available.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: I didn't even notice that.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: I didn't either until I got thinking about it.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: Because every place we go, they've got minnows or worms or leeches or something.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: Something there.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: Especially marines.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: But there was no live bait available.
- 33:32SPEAKER_04: No kidding.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: I found that odd.
- 33:35SPEAKER_04: That's really odd.
- 33:36SPEAKER_04: Not just me.
- 33:36SPEAKER_04: Especially there's wall I there's the wall I there's.
- 33:38SPEAKER_03: Are you kidding me?
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: Ridiculous.
- 33:40SPEAKER_03: A minnow on a drop shot grid?
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: Are you kidding me?
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: I might have even got it.
- 33:45SPEAKER_04: You know what else wasn't available?
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: What's that?
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: Beer.
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: Make sure you get your beer before you get up there.
- 33:51SPEAKER_04: We found some, but I'll give you a little hint on that.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: When you got to go past Key River, go turn off to the Grundy Lake Provincial Park turn off, and there's a new little building in there.
- 33:59SPEAKER_04: They're the only ones that sell beer in that hole.
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: Like from the south, probably 20 kilometers south of that.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: Well, Perry Sound is the more last place you could get beer.
- 34:08SPEAKER_04: So just in case you don't bring your beer up, because we know we like our beer after a day on the water.
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: So that was a surprise to us.
- 34:14SPEAKER_04: We're starting to run around looking for beer.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: It was Panic City, wouldn't it?
- 34:18SPEAKER_04: Well, some of us brought beer.
- 34:19SPEAKER_04: Some of us were smart enough to bring beer.
- 34:22SPEAKER_04: But those are promo now.
- 34:23SPEAKER_04: Those are consummate professors are consummate pros, yes.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: But the lodge, Chris and uh Carol, they run the lodge.
- 34:30SPEAKER_04: Fantastic people.
- 34:32SPEAKER_04: They're just uh they're so down to earth.
- 34:34SPEAKER_04: Um, they run a great business.
- 34:37SPEAKER_04: Chris is a farmer.
- 34:38SPEAKER_04: He's he's Steve Nitswiki's junior or whatever.
- 34:41SPEAKER_04: He's a sheet metal mechanic, a farmer, and a lodge owner.
- 34:44SPEAKER_05: Well, that is exactly Stevie, right?
- 34:47SPEAKER_04: He wears the cupper alls around there.
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: Big of those tanks, those propane tanks, those big ones.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, they're huge.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: They're the like the like the big industrial ones.
- 34:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're he's walking down the dock, throws it in the boat.
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: He's gonna get a refill like that.
- 35:01SPEAKER_04: Just a big strong dude, but super nice people.
- 35:04SPEAKER_04: It was so it was uh it was great.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: And the cottage was gorgeous that we were in.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: So and uh they do have an American plan, although most of their guests uh they have five uh outbuildings, yeah uh cabins.
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: But one of them uh has apparently 14 beds.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was huge, two-story, yeah, massive.
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: So if you got a big group, this would be the place for you.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: And they they do offer American plan, although most of their guests bring their own food, and because all of the uh cabins have got all the requirements for cooking and whatnot.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh water is potable, uh hot and cold.
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, all the nice amenities that you would like from an experience like this, because like I said, you can't access it by road.
- 35:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so it's kind of out there in in terms of uh of accessing it.
- 35:54SPEAKER_04: They got a great little store there, too.
- 35:55SPEAKER_04: If you need any, if you forgot anything, there's uh you know, a tackle store and food and uh ice cream.
- 36:00SPEAKER_04: We had some ice cream.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say uh Nick, uh, what was your favorite part of that?
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: I'd have to say the uh the brownie with the scoop of ice cream on top.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: That brownie was just something extra.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: You guys did double chocolate, right?
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: You guys.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, Dino and I both double chocolate.
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: And I did the cherry, what was that cherry?
- 36:17SPEAKER_04: What's the one on the card?
- 36:19SPEAKER_04: I also really love black cherry on top of that.
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: Oh my god, on top of that brownie.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, I also really loved the turkey dinner we had.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was like, turkey dinner in July.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: I'm a big fan of that.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was awesome.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: But uh wonderful place if you're looking for now.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: I didn't uh I unfortunately I was I normally look at the price range, so I give you some heads up on pricing.
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: I did not look at this one.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: I actually didn't.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: But I have a feeling it's probably middle of the road in terms of pricing.
- 36:47SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: They don't uh seem the type that would uh gouge.
- 36:52SPEAKER_04: They seem the last they're the last people that would gouge, I think, to be honest with them.
- 36:56SPEAKER_03: So uh if you want to experience uh the Georgian Bay Area or or more importantly, um uh Key River, you gotta go to this place.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we caught walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass.
- 37:10SPEAKER_04: We didn't get any muskie or our largemouth.
- 37:12SPEAKER_04: Apparently there's largemouth in the river on the way out, too.
- 37:14SPEAKER_04: So they're all safe.
- 37:16SPEAKER_04: In the key itself.
- 37:17SPEAKER_04: In that Key River, yeah.
- 37:18SPEAKER_04: All of the city.
- 37:20SPEAKER_04: It was a beautiful looking.
- 37:21SPEAKER_04: Oh my god, the drive there is just so nice, eh?
- 37:23SPEAKER_04: That that boat ride out to the lodge.
- 37:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so good.
- 37:26SPEAKER_04: So but we got some nice smollies, you know, a couple of decent ones, and uh lots of fish.
- 37:29SPEAKER_04: There's definitely lots of fish there.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: We found so many schools and that rain day that Angela's talking about, we we could have at a podcast, but Angela and I said, let's get the rain gear on, let's go start, you know, discover some new water and all that.
- 37:40SPEAKER_04: So that was kind of fun too, that day going out there.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: Second time we've done second or third time we've done that, where we've gone out the whole day in uh downpour.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: But sometimes those are the best days because it uh allows you to think differently.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: The heat's not there, you know what I mean?
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: It was just uh yeah, it was fun.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: Uh a little bit of history of the quay.
- 37:59SPEAKER_03: Uh it is uh course nearby the legendary French river, uh not far from there.
- 38:05SPEAKER_03: But it was not part of the fur trade routing um for whatever reason, although I would think it would it would have been perfect.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: It only goes up to that small lake, uh Portage Lake, which is kind of weird when you see the river that it just ends there.
- 38:20SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, I don't think it it accesses a whole lot versus the Pickerel River, which is a lot longer, and then the French, which goes into Nippissing, right?
- 38:27SPEAKER_04: So those are a much longer, bigger body of water.
- 38:31SPEAKER_04: Well, the French was the big, the key, um, the key, I should say, the main fur trade route, wasn't it?
- 38:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, up in that area.
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: So it was wonderful place.
- 38:40SPEAKER_03: I highly recommend it if you're looking for something that you can access uh with your boat, not by car, because that makes it part of the fun there as well.
- 38:50SPEAKER_04: That's great, adventure.
- 38:51SPEAKER_03: And it's uh like I said, four-hour drive from most of the GTA.
- 38:55SPEAKER_03: So you really can't go wrong.
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: Great people, great place.
- 39:01SPEAKER_03: Uh do they have information on how we can uh get folks there?
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: Do we have that?
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: Key River Lodge.
- 39:07SPEAKER_04: Just look at just type in Key River Lodge on uh on Google and you will find their site.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: We'll put a link in the bio of this podcast too, so you'll be able to find it.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Um, did we miss anything, guys?
- 39:17SPEAKER_03: That you two were there as well.
- 39:19SPEAKER_03: I don't think anything too important.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: Well, did we did we want to get into the like the fishing?
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: How it was.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: I think we should save that one for the episode.
- 39:28SPEAKER_03: That are it.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: I think we've done that one.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: That one's done.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: Done and did.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: Uh don't forget fishingcanada.com, the gateway, the portal to your next fishing adventure.
- 39:40SPEAKER_03: We'll have information on this lodge there, I'm sure.
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: Uh it's probably a good place to go and start your uh if if you're planning on going.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: You know what I didn't ask.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: Uh we should have asked about the fall fishery there.
- 39:53SPEAKER_04: Oh, I bet you late fall.
- 39:55SPEAKER_04: It's got to be.
- 39:56SPEAKER_04: It's gotta be outstanding.
- 39:57SPEAKER_03: It'd be cold and windy and nasty, though.
- 39:59SPEAKER_04: It would, yeah, you're definitely gonna get that, but you're gonna get that anywhere for late fall, no matter what, right?
- 40:04SPEAKER_04: So, and again, you get the protection of all those rocks and islands and the formations.
- 40:09SPEAKER_04: So I I have a feeling it would be like the walleye fishing there.
- 40:12SPEAKER_04: I'll bet you it would be outstanding in the fall.
- 40:15SPEAKER_04: So, yeah.
- 40:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yes, sir, E Bobby.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: Uh, Key River, put it on your to-do list for short.
- 40:23SPEAKER_03: And Key River Lodge is the place to go.
- 40:26SPEAKER_03: And on that note, I want to thank you on behalf of the entire team.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: Uh, Mr.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: Nick EV over there.
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: He's in charge of the store, too, by the way.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Just in case I'm a multifaceted individual.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: In case you were wondering why the store is multi-faceted disgrace.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: Gotta give me some time to get back there and clean it up.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, Dean Taylor over there.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: Come on now.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: Two weeks.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: And you're going again.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: You guys.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: He's Peter Bowman.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: I'm Angela.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: Thanks for joining us.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: We'll talk to you soon.
- 41:03SPEAKER_03: This episode of Outdoor Journal Radio has been brought to you in part by the Invasive Species Center, protecting Canada's land and water from invasive species.
