- 1:55Carter. We had three lost episodes between last week's show and this week's,
- 2:00but here now from January twenty seventh, nineteen forty six. Is the Body
- 2:07in the Oss Nick Corner. That's their detectives. This is the story of
- 2:23a man's own the world over as one of the most ring and resourceful characters
- 2:29in the history of detective ictionis a man whose name has become a symbol of
- 2:32the triumph of right and justice over the sinister source of crime as well as
- 2:37men. Nick Conner, that's the detectives. There is a flighting case,
- 2:49Nick, search for the murderer who played that on Hitler's brands on the jaw
- 2:53of a dead man. The Body in the ice have many strange customs throughout
- 3:00the world, but perhaps the strangest is that of the Arctic clubs. You've
- 3:05seen the Arctic plot in action in movies, newspapers and magazines. When there's
- 3:08the members John bathing suits and go for a swim. This morning, the
- 3:14mercury hovering around ten of US zero, A shifting group of newspaper men gathers
- 3:17on the snow crossed beach to report the strange activities of the actual k Okay,
- 3:23that's a good mom. Want to come and they like you just good
- 3:37a joy just like they're enjoying. We are enjoying it. The healthest part
- 3:44in the world. It wore popley. Okay, flap that ever one on
- 3:50the rests I tell you coming about the club, all of my close up
- 3:59to come at all the show you're not part of thought, Okay, just
- 4:03talking to the smartphone. Mister literally would wiggling with two in everybody they're friend
- 4:13and me started to guard in Tateen. Now the fifties is every month rail
- 4:18we meet and take a dip in the health skipping waters from the ocean as
- 4:23easy in the summertime, but in the wood like now. But it's yellow
- 4:27peason. He can take plenty of intentional part of it. And darly,
- 4:30swimming the winter is your best way to right off, cause pneumonia is swimming
- 4:42up. Mister a big glea idle with two n propaty for the different reason.
- 4:47It's not enough, Okay, come on by last fighting the right nay
- 4:51driving when you end the water. Now I have to break through the ice
- 4:57by can get it, and you're gonna shining that old gold looking at the
- 4:59lar yeah, yeah, yeah, not to have them guys run into the
- 5:03water all over again. That camera wasn't threading. Okay, okay, I'm
- 5:08going back in. They gotta break through that ice first anyway, and they
- 5:12getting clear of I don't know, say come on, because you don't think
- 5:17want someone press them around in the ice. So I don't know. I
- 5:21was just wondering, what we just phone something to the ice? Look,
- 5:30holy jumping would look at that? Sorry, Joel was at the cobaby.
- 5:36It's funny they tied it off the Sason going steaking. Where are you won?
- 5:55Though you would touch it quite early this morning, minute one and one?
- 6:01All right, and were my character and let's get the right well it
- 6:15was going by on your character, all understand. He was going in for
- 6:27a moment street when it's about him and all the way and I'll go right
- 6:46over at the first last time. It's down like a past jump too,
- 7:06and that excusing world planning the body. It doesn't make sense that door.
- 7:20You want to even the water, all right, I know we're gonna turn
- 7:25around, you know, boy, you don't know how glad I am to
- 7:30cheat. Hi went on with about world of planning across You're not serious water
- 7:40I get three features. It's a demonstration of the stupid accum the line of
- 7:44talk. I'm being free to turn the cage which I could play. I've
- 7:49been twenty four hours. All right, all right, well now you're on
- 7:53the rest investment going home. Yeah, you're going to clear a blow bills.
- 7:59Why are you just gotta keep you hanging around here making home calls?
- 8:01If I reallysort to a miss stuff in this, I just wanted to get
- 8:05Nick house here? Why are you card online? Never mind? Was afraid
- 8:09of that? Why love pathy? Blackmail my old grandmother to get Nick got?
- 8:16In this case? It's a thinker. I'm on the beach. Is
- 8:20take a look at the bottle? O. We gonna let Maddy put up
- 8:24into the take on now, Pa, actually just round, you might as
- 8:28well take a look, and I credit this the next time we have a
- 8:30running with Maddy's all right, this is it? Nick. We just tall
- 8:43at the little way up onto the beach and as a body right now broad
- 8:46and started in the trunk of brown rice? What kind of ice? Brown?
- 8:50I I wasn't on asanchorized. You can tell the god the granular of
- 8:54course, seeing visually cold weather I sometimes pawns in the bottom of the sea
- 8:56becomes thick enough to draw a large job into the surfacesten some time ships could
- 9:01have been acted had the actress spoke to the service in the business a mile
- 9:05you mean that's what happened at this I do you start? It was ding
- 9:07on the origin, bound held down by that light, run his way what
- 9:11that means? He was words? Finally was on the bottom ground ice formed
- 9:16and finally, boy, do what do you know of that that big ex
- 9:20medic crack? All the ices can off the body, melt the rest.
- 9:22So we can just see what happened here on next time would be a long
- 9:28cat well madding thank about it? There enough now? But what happened?
- 9:45Oh say? Able to look at the right side of that guy because smashing
- 9:50death must have been into and tire temporary load smashed. Yeah, it must
- 9:58have been quite a fight time. Very what's this bruise on the side of
- 10:03the chin. Oh, naturally you must have been slogged there because Joe's book
- 10:07and could take a close look at that BRUI swat that what under the impression
- 10:15of a ring? Mad He would tell me, who is not the ring
- 10:18in this country? Well it maybe like soldier Sway, Yeah, yeah,
- 10:30the any identification of it. Here's something Carnis Coach met with a name in
- 10:37it, the way it came off the ocean bottom with him that I could
- 10:39flat up a lobster. Bout to me, let's just lock the letters on
- 10:46his hands turned on pretty crudely as the fisherman was marking his lobster. But
- 10:52and he he now was about two hundreds of the night and hell yeah see
- 11:05na doctor risk. Oh yeah, he's of course Belgrade all time, about
- 11:09twenty miles up the coast. It is thirty miles I do. I'll right
- 11:13matic very packed. I'm identified man with chilled in the bike by someone wearing
- 11:18a not to ring, waited down and down from the d there Beldrade round
- 11:20Pikes voted him up and down. Here your cage, come on, pat
- 11:24ye, now up, Nick, you're not walking down on me. Believe
- 11:28we would get smiss certainly man, but it's murdered. They you can't just
- 11:31go home. And I can't say anything about going home, I say,
- 11:33and I are going up to Belgrade and not who wears not two rings?
- 11:46Yeah, that's in the flash lit here and that's your phone. My secretary
- 11:52don't knows I recollect today. It never meant I detective am. I gonna
- 11:56ask you some questions about what I think someone anything missing from belt right and
- 12:01I think I've founded listened manmade him here heavy let your part. Charlie Hall
- 12:09already and the police Monday Burger Day they wondered what happened to him in my
- 12:18shore Grendon's grocery store. Yeah, support yourself by the shore stands upgrade.
- 12:22How long has Howl been missing? About two weeks? I thought he was
- 12:26out on a binge. He said he want a Friday night to make deliveries
- 12:30in the truck. He never showed up Saturday. Did the truck? Yeah?
- 12:33I guess he brought it back to the garage before he went wherever he
- 12:37went. Did it never occurred to him that the killer might have brought it
- 12:39back. No, never occurred to mc kelly. Was killed. He's gonna
- 12:41have fast before anyone complaining about non delivered grocery that day and how was killed?
- 12:48After Benn would Chapter was killed another shop. I have a list of
- 12:54Powell delivery said little, but that's Friday. Don't see why you should.
- 12:56I think this is a murder case. Do you want to care man with
- 13:01you too? Mister Parker, my name is corn all right, as far
- 13:05as I see, would you be any relationship sim Carter who brought up William
- 13:11bankas was my father? Your father he was? Why didn't you say so
- 13:15before? I'm glad to meet your Carter's shake? Your father was a great
- 13:20detective. Charlie's going to be slayers. You get, you get anything we've
- 13:24got in this top world that for a while I thought all I was going
- 13:28to get was a roll color. It does make I think it's going to
- 13:43snow. How many work stuffs do we have to make those eleven delivery nice?
- 13:48So I think we've covered nine. I went by the name of tan
- 13:52On that shooting club. Bel Gray would had a shoeing for the little town.
- 13:56Doesn't look like a resource to have shooting hanging out. But I don't
- 14:01take it very rarely playing anything out. Do you think how it might have
- 14:05been killed if one of these last and places they found out that they made
- 14:09the other two the other nine? Did I raised some person? Maybe the
- 14:13last two. I flind that way someone might be lying a question. M
- 14:18hm, we don't know. Through power fill. It was time r than
- 14:24the last name sounds the same the original murderer. Pray box. That's kind
- 14:52of like a milk Everybody off another, shut the hail, let's see oh
- 15:05rare stars got away shooting ourself is and tame so the record and one who
- 15:11doesn't want to hold Jake follows. I dominate the killer off the guy who
- 15:16the splashes lee he went located. I think doctor for him, snow in
- 15:22the ground. Frak fo this month. The first warmhouse replied, you want
- 15:28to be a freezing night. We can't sit here on a long way back
- 15:31rode with two flat cars and wait for out look down the road a little
- 15:33bit. The last I think I can real life. Yeah, I see
- 15:39ahead and refracts the street. But I want to make it half an hour,
- 15:43half an hour. This will the way here in his office club drove
- 15:50us into this row hoptably. I think that what I wanted to fire.
- 16:11M hm, the answer, right answer. Maybe they didn't hear it.

- 17:27From the time, I'm sorry, I didn't give anything. I was
- 17:32in the rear of the club. My name is Adam, secretary of the
- 17:36Ormagic. You're the famous nick cart that aren't you? Yes? And this
- 17:41lady that's wrong? What kind of a club is business? To Adam?
- 17:45Why does everyone ignore us? It's something of a paradoxys and it's a new
- 17:49idea decently populated. This is a club or anti social men at acomb precises
- 17:57all our members and then desire the important advantages of the club. But Tina
- 18:02the social prod it formed its organization. There's a six club rule against all
- 18:07complications after entertainments, and I'm sorry to say against leave Adams. I came
- 18:15here to ask you some quite if you would have taken appointment tomorrow. Actually
- 18:18hate nice to leave now, can you lease as every telephone for help?
- 18:26There is no telephone this way all the mean thing. I'm sure you understand
- 18:32my position with my cutter and just but this doesn't mean anything. I've got
- 18:38them. Oh what are we doing now? What will look up the corner
- 18:48clubhouse? Are those telephone wires? Yeah, punch Adams applying about the phone.
- 18:53I know we were lying about that on the back of the house.
- 18:57What are you talking about here? You know, one of those so called
- 19:02social class that's what's there? Your shore plans on the shooting tract, the
- 19:07past enough factor that what that story is just awesome? Yeah? Why can
- 19:36I graduated? Please? Your hands and when you're und cat up DNA just
- 19:44ago, our hands are rough, Adams? Pick that flash right? All
- 19:47right? Deductions were correct. I had a little more hope that my hate
- 19:52making content story would That's why I waited to hear for your second thanks.
- 19:57I had to hope you would be killed in the crowd. It's unfortunately you
- 20:02are not. I don't think so, but I do. Indeed, I'm
- 20:07afraid I shall have to kill both of you all over again. X ouck.
- 20:26You've been all night? Yeah, and they was very kill us in
- 20:30me? Why what? In? Why not it tortious? Don't some way
- 20:37out? These remained even in the year of experience and probably how to carry
- 20:51a load of play in one hand. Those convenient woman would carry a loaded
- 20:55gun in the other. Yeah, we're not, I assure you the tool
- 21:02is not. Okay, what's the game of play? We're in an extraordinary
- 21:07position to kata as we already guess. This is a depo for escapes in
- 21:12the war and intend to pay in progress downstairs is a vice. One school
- 21:18of thought advocates your death immediately. Yes, spirited opposition, which is to
- 21:22use you as hostages to ensure they transport back to the mother country. You
- 21:26haven't made up your mind yet. I'm going down now. I have friends
- 21:32who returned with the final verte in the meantime, I had right, I
- 21:38was going wrong with that. I very well they have back. Yes,
- 21:48be sure to say the last two for the extre moment. I'll show you
- 22:03why you can and make sure you's name. All the ashes take a lot
- 22:07of cry, can't you. There's no way to climb down the telephone.
- 22:22Then a strong over the house jumped alongside their windows. Cigare bit the yeah
- 22:38right, I'm gone, No, definitely part whether there's a phone on,
- 22:51there's a line or not contacted to the set walk there's kind of cutting two
- 22:56bare wires together, so I switch. Then they have for her the host
- 23:04question. Yes, oh yeah, mum. The gentleman below had reached the
- 23:33decision and what they decid debating it has been decided to give you a once
- 23:41not waiting in the seventh they wait there right, not being gotten out.
- 23:45I'm more or less I expected it. I'm as for them. I've taken
- 23:49your advice, my last figure save for the execution, so happy to receive
- 23:56the news of the magnificent. In the coda, I assure you was that
- 23:59I gotta come come on back down. The time for us a complicate the
- 24:06process. Why we can't play makes our taking our grades of the cellar.
- 24:08We're going out into the cold world, all right, all right and stopping
- 24:26the brush. We're out in the house. I'm not out of danger yet.
- 24:32We're going to got one gun. I at least twelve them with a
- 24:33whole art. Oh why do we do? We've gotta get Captain bout with
- 24:37a until the summer sponsor. As a way we had likely not to kill
- 24:41us, and we can't lose contact. They've got to puld on like m
- 24:44re enforcement. How we played Hatten down the pitch and they're not half frozen
- 24:48slushingly. We're hung fo We're want to leave a trail they can pot bay
- 24:56follows trail. Alright, Why didn't take Adams with us? I want him
- 25:00to leave the chase? Which way you're going to let them chase us?
- 25:03Heading back to our car which comes to work and helps them to get to
- 25:07in time. Let's try to make it round two flat tires got back to
- 25:12town the following people, I can leave them behind us pay back at the
- 25:19house walking no more, no line like Indians. Yeah that's clever, all
- 25:26right, that's the hunting float turning away. That was like shooting. Why
- 25:30the sea and the rest backing make yes? Okay, anyone happens the time
- 25:36on the road. I won't think anything. Form wan't realize human things are
- 25:40being hunted. That they can probably a hundreds that out after game, it's
- 25:45come on thro this tupe of which you don't think the spot of the I
- 25:49g shooting to set the scene. How can we got to catch sight of
- 25:55us? I don't know that you're wherever the people please say your past come
- 26:03on. Yeah, I else to thank Adam see us. Yes, yes,
- 26:12it's fun of us. Wants to sit away. Now keep bunny.
- 26:17You gotta make the car, make you can find Yill you want to chat
- 26:26him that Wait wait wait, okay, slending coming. I got that thing
- 26:36I wanna passed back by on the road and let me pick up the way
- 26:37or great wives are being pleasant. Way. I have to pacify the car,
- 26:44the long pickle. I think I can take it. You would have
- 26:47cost to the dance bank of my car. I was gone a place,
- 26:48but I don't want to be able to car. I stand by. I'm
- 26:57not stopping for back the game, not the reinforcement for Adam's club members are
- 27:03really going to be at a telsial from now hung back in a prisoner of
- 27:06war. Captain. Yeah, I'm sorry. You won't borrow a car.
- 27:21You get a hold mister Carr to go Jean knight Lett and hold him Carys
- 27:25shut him take the train. But that's right, all right, Lennam.
- 27:26Thanks anyway, But they offer many nights of you giving me all the credit
- 27:30for granted that Ganga the w you deserve you've got your home case coat.
- 27:36Arlie Howell might hurt some up about the dad when he was taking his last
- 27:38smitter to the club, got the fishes and before he drove away and was
- 27:42discovered, but up a pipe and look killed. Adam come to his body
- 27:47and tail great bay when he drove the truck back to the garage. But
- 27:49why did I Adam sitting in our continent? I don't know we were home.
- 27:53I'll bet the must have been a mister Glenham's grocer for when we were
- 27:56going over Howe delivery schedules. Real, I didn't do it on the trail
- 28:00I stopped. He sure didn't put the carter and you sure put the share
- 28:06of of Belgrade on the bathroom. And as far as Patty and I might
- 28:08have been off the prominently, you hadn't bath my s os againstant the Bone
- 28:12company reported, Well what happened back at the country, brother Alad oh Man?
- 28:18Why Patsy would Adam run away by smoking eleven cigarettes and have an off?
- 28:23Oh, that don't make sense or hale it was an all drink my
- 28:27pots on him. I took the ashes from the cigarette Patty smoked and packed
- 28:32the under the paper cigarette Q and then when I pretended to start smoking my
- 28:36last execution figure, I simply blew the ashes the rect claim to Adam's eyes.
- 28:41Fine the man, so I could take a gun away and knock him
- 28:42out. Oh that was it what I'm bot to work for here, And
- 28:47I've stricken every pocket and a hundred up in leave. Mister Carter, I
- 28:51got an apology to lak to. I alould have said you were the son
- 28:53of the pain, which sim Carter, well, I take it back,
- 28:56Sim Carter's the photos the pain, which Nick welcome back. A lot to
- 29:12talk about in this particular episode. First of all, I think that the
- 29:18whole idea of leaving a complex insignia such as a swastika by paunching someone with
- 29:26a ring on something I think the MythBusters debunked several years ago. I think
- 29:33they found that, and they were it was around superheroes, but they found
- 29:36that in order to actually leave that sort of impression, it just wouldn't happen.
- 29:42You would come up with enough force to actually destroy the skull before you'd
- 29:48leave some sort of mark on there. But it is a literary trope,
- 29:52so I guess we have to allow it. The same thing goes for blowing
- 29:56up the car by firing at the gas but no expert on nineteen forties car
- 30:03it might have worked, And of course it did work because it was Nick
- 30:07Carter doing it. Perhaps most interesting, though, was this thing that you'll
- 30:11hear in a lot of post war material early First War is a concern about
- 30:21these escape Nazis. It's not just a desire for justice, it's a fear
- 30:33of them coming back and then being able to rebuild these things. I think
- 30:41that, particularly when you compare the thought that the First World War had been
- 30:48a war to end all wars, and then less than twenty five years later
- 30:55American sons and daughters again went off to war with Germany, there's less of
- 31:02a feeling of security that the Nazis wouldn't somehow be back, that they hadn't
- 31:08used all of the Fifth Columnist connections and other connections around the world, that
- 31:15this would all rare rear its ugly head sooner or later. And we saw
- 31:22this not just in Nick Carter, but certainly in the Superman programs from late
- 31:30nineteen forty five early nineteen forty six, dealing with the Adamman, a former
- 31:38undercover Nazi who is engineered by a Nazi scientist to be a able of practically
- 31:48killing Superman. You might think that, as this program aired in nineteen forty
- 31:53six that a story about Nazi villains that'd be a bit dated, But the
- 32:00real concern about Nazis coming back in some form or another really fueled this sort
- 32:06of program, and it continued on for years and even decades in one form
- 32:13or another. I remember an episode of the nineteen nineties TV series Lewis and
- 32:17Clark The New Adventures of Superman in which a Nazi sleeper cell with genetically engineered
- 32:25Aryan specimenspose to take over the country. And again this was in the nineteen
- 32:31nineties. I will say that for Nazis trying to escape, they certainly went
- 32:37about it in a funny way, particularly with the swastika ring, because if
- 32:45your goal is to get out of the United States and back to Germany,
- 32:49you'd want to be inconspicuous. But as Nick pointed out, there weren't too
- 32:53many people who belonged to the United States who would be wearing a swasticka ring.
- 33:00Anybody who saw that would have to be dealt with, and that just
- 33:02got messy. And you know, if it hadn't been so obvious that they
- 33:08were up to something, they might have actually gotten away with it. All
- 33:13right. Well, now some listener comments and feedback, and David shares a
- 33:17good remark. I've noticed that the past couple of episodes of Nick Carter were
- 33:22written by Alfred Bester, most famous as a sci fi writer. I wonder
- 33:27if the return to the pulpy field that you noted in this episode is his
- 33:31influence. I think certainly that could be the case. And sometimes I do
- 33:37think old time radio fans or fans of classic entertainment will often give too much
- 33:44credit to the actors for settying the shape of the series. Certainly, actors
- 33:52are important, but it's going to more often or not be the creative team,
- 33:58the writer, the the directors, the producers who are going to set
- 34:05the direction for this and really define a lot of what goes on on the
