- 0:03Speaker 1: I have to tell you like I mean I, I
- 0:06Speaker 1: loved it. I loved I lost train of thought. What
- 0:09Speaker 1: were we talking? We were talking about stranger things. Oh
- 0:11Speaker 1: my god, take that out. You know what, Rose, You
- 0:19Speaker 1: don't own me. I have never claimed to own you.
- 0:22Speaker 1: If there's one thing that the film First Wives Club
- 0:25Speaker 1: has taught me, it's that I am not owned by anyone.
- 0:28Speaker 1: In fact, I spend my days wearing white skirt suits
- 0:32Speaker 1: and um dancing with my girlfriends while getting revenge on
- 0:36Speaker 1: my ex husband. If there's one thing the film The
- 0:38Speaker 1: First Wives Club taught me, it's like you could never
- 0:41Speaker 1: have enough Jupiterman your lips. Absolutely, there is no maximum.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The limit does not exist. And today on the pod
- 0:48Speaker 1: we have Jack Francis, the artists formerly known as Jack
- 0:52Speaker 1: This Tripper. If you've ever followed her on Instagram, We're
- 0:56Speaker 1: so excited to talk to her about all things First
- 0:58Speaker 1: Wives Club, plus some tan in Son, Coyote, Ugly, and
- 1:02Speaker 1: other other faves of ours. Jack is an amazing artist
- 1:07Speaker 1: who is going on tour by the way, check out
- 1:09Speaker 1: her tour Divorced in Paradise on her website. And I
- 1:14Speaker 1: don't know if there's a better person to discuss a
- 1:17Speaker 1: truly queer cannon film. I mean not even queer canon.
- 1:21Speaker 1: It's like kind of bag cannon. I don't know if
- 1:23Speaker 1: that if that or maybe divorcee canon is what it
- 1:26Speaker 1: actually is. Um. I also think this film is lesbian
- 1:28Speaker 1: cannon because of its like iconic bar scene, and today
- 1:31Speaker 1: we're going to reclaim it for more than just sis gays,
- 1:33Speaker 1: because this is like a virgin the show where we
- 1:36Speaker 1: give yesterday's pop culture today's tapes. I'm Rose, damn you
- 1:39Speaker 1: and I'm Fran Toronto. Hi listen. We had a bit
- 1:46Speaker 1: of an ordeal setting up our microphone guard. I thought
- 1:50Speaker 1: that would never happen. Oh my god, Fire Island. You know,
- 1:54Speaker 1: we're on island time. We are on island time. That's
- 1:57Speaker 1: excuse everything that happens. No, but like what just happened.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I could do alone in my apartment extremely easily. But here,
- 2:07Speaker 1: it's just I was possible issue. It was a ten
- 2:10Speaker 1: minute or deal. Well, okay, so I we need to
- 2:13Speaker 1: set the scene for the Virgins in a couple of
- 2:15Speaker 1: different ways. So we are currently on vacation. Yes, we're
- 2:19Speaker 1: on Fire Island. And if you've heard of it, a
- 2:22Speaker 1: gorgeous transgender home yes, truly perfect. We're in a beautiful
- 2:27Speaker 1: vacation rental and we are recording, are you know the
- 2:32Speaker 1: opening of this week's podcast episode from Gay Paradise Gay Paradise,
- 2:38Speaker 1: We also do both happen to be very stone, which
- 2:44Speaker 1: was we decided that this is what we were Yes, well,
- 2:47Speaker 1: I had therapy right before this, and we decided to
- 2:50Speaker 1: use the fifteen minutes between ending therapy and starting this
- 2:53Speaker 1: podcast recording to get really really hot. Maybe a little
- 2:57Speaker 1: more than I anticipated, but I was not expecting this.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I only had like like three puffs three max. Yeah,
- 3:06Speaker 1: and I I don't know, I feel like but we're
- 3:09Speaker 1: in a good stay right now, and this has been
- 3:11Speaker 1: a wonderful vacation right yes, um we have listen, We've
- 3:14Speaker 1: been having so much fun. Um. The past week has
- 3:18Speaker 1: been amazing, not just because we've been on vacation, but
- 3:20Speaker 1: because we did our first ever live show. It was incredible.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I mean, like, the night was beyond the drag. Performers
- 3:29Speaker 1: and Honey were so good. They were amazing, but also
- 3:33Speaker 1: we were the stars of the show. Yeah, well know,
- 3:36Speaker 1: the real stars of the show were the virgins who
- 3:39Speaker 1: came out. It was that, I know, I know, it's corny,
- 3:43Speaker 1: but we know on this podcast that I do get
- 3:45Speaker 1: a little corny sometimes, and you know, listen, we record
- 3:50Speaker 1: this podcast, like obviously we're recording together each us on
- 3:54Speaker 1: Fire Island right now, but we mostly record this audience,
- 3:58Speaker 1: like the three of us either in a studio on
- 4:00Speaker 1: zoom and we have so much fun doing it. But
- 4:04Speaker 1: getting to do it in a room full of people,
- 4:06Speaker 1: with all those performers who were with us, like with
- 4:10Speaker 1: everyone who works on this podcast involved was so cool
- 4:14Speaker 1: and like it came to life in a way that
- 4:16Speaker 1: I was not prepared for but was really really excited
- 4:20Speaker 1: and moved by. Yeah, and it was also really nice
- 4:23Speaker 1: to like decompress with everyone after and to just like
- 4:26Speaker 1: meet all of you and yeah, I don't know, I
- 4:29Speaker 1: want to do more. Yes, I love the Virgins. The
- 4:32Speaker 1: Virgins are so cool. Everyone was really well dressed at
- 4:36Speaker 1: our show. The vibes were immaculated, were immaculate. So tell
- 4:40Speaker 1: us where you want us to come or bring you
- 4:42Speaker 1: want to go on tour, So like get your college
- 4:46Speaker 1: to bring up money. Um, we're downt We're available. Anyways,
- 4:53Speaker 1: we do have at least a little culture to catch
- 4:57Speaker 1: up on, because I mean, excuse me, I must coming
- 5:00Speaker 1: down with something. I think we have Minions fever rows.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Oh my god, someone got the doctor. We have Neither
- 5:10Speaker 1: Frand nor myself have ever seen a Minions movie, not
- 5:13Speaker 1: a single one. I don't I've never seen anything in
- 5:16Speaker 1: that even cinematic universe. I guess that they originate from
- 5:20Speaker 1: just Despicable Me. Okay, um, same, But it feels like
- 5:28Speaker 1: the name on everybody's lips is going to be Minions.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Minions for sure, And let me tell you, we need
- 5:34Speaker 1: to be sent more memes. We've been getting some memes
- 5:37Speaker 1: from y'all about Minions, but like, I feel like we
- 5:40Speaker 1: could be you know, I need so many more. And
- 5:43Speaker 1: I really appreciate everyone who's been tagging us in Minions memes.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Really appreciate the support. We love Minions memes, but there
- 5:50Speaker 1: needs to be more. I don't ever want to know
- 5:53Speaker 1: who the Minions are, what they do, what the context is. Like,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I don't think I'm going to see the movie. I
- 5:58Speaker 1: don't think I'm ever going to see any Minions content.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But it's that's not what it's about. It's about vibes. Yeah,
- 6:03Speaker 1: it really is, and it's about you know, let me
- 6:05Speaker 1: tell you this soundtrack was impeccable produced by Our King
- 6:10Speaker 1: and Jack Antonov, which like, I'm so glad he did it,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but he really needs a break. He should be in
- 6:17Speaker 1: Fire Island with us right now because the girls have
- 6:19Speaker 1: been running him ragged. But listen, girl, like this soundtrack
- 6:24Speaker 1: is Jack Antonov's best work since what his last Taylor
- 6:28Speaker 1: album Black, I don't even I feel like he really
- 6:30Speaker 1: popped off with this. Very well curated and produced. If
- 6:34Speaker 1: you haven't listened to it, It's lots of covers of
- 6:36Speaker 1: seventies songs like Carolaid, Polycheck does Bang Bang My Baby, Caliucus,
- 6:46Speaker 1: Diana Ross does a song with tam Impala which is insane.
- 6:49Speaker 1: St Vincent covering Funky Town that one, Oh, and um
- 6:53Speaker 1: Tierra Wag Tierra Whack is actually one of my favorite covers.
- 6:57Speaker 1: It really is a culture. We've been playing it on blasts.
- 7:00Speaker 1: We have been bumping the Minion soundtrack by the pool
- 7:04Speaker 1: at least once a day. I actually don't think we
- 7:06Speaker 1: listened to it yesterday, which does hurt my heart a
- 7:09Speaker 1: little bit. Yeah yeah, but we'll listen today. We'll listen today.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I have seen more Minion pussies this week then I
- 7:15Speaker 1: ever expected to in my life and I'm embracing that. Yeah. Yeah, look,
- 7:21Speaker 1: this is this is our culture. Now, this is this
- 7:24Speaker 1: is what we come to talk about. This is a
- 7:25Speaker 1: minion We are minions advocates. Yes, we are allies to
- 7:31Speaker 1: the minion community. It's l g B t q M
- 7:35Speaker 1: now truly. On this vacation, I have had taken I
- 7:47Speaker 1: have I've scooped my brain fully out of my skull
- 7:50Speaker 1: to just be no thoughts, had empty girl there and
- 7:54Speaker 1: that's been working really well. Oh yeah, oh yeah. We're
- 7:57Speaker 1: now on day fine of of a weeklong vacation and
- 8:02Speaker 1: you know it's out. Yes, very much. So different people
- 8:07Speaker 1: here today. Okay, there was something else you wanted to do.
- 8:11Speaker 1: We want to talk about Stranger Things a little bit.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I mean we've only watched the first episode. Yeah, we
- 8:19Speaker 1: watched episode eight. We still haven't watched episode nine because
- 8:23Speaker 1: it is the length of the movie Avatar. So long.
- 8:28Speaker 1: We'll get around to it, but so far, I really
- 8:31Speaker 1: liked the first part. Spoiler spoilers if you watch Stranger Things.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Spoiler I'm glad that Papa is dead. I also wish
- 8:40Speaker 1: we didn't have to call him Papa. It's really awkward.
- 8:44Speaker 1: It's really not right, but like the drama was kick
- 8:48Speaker 1: it like it was really like I loved every minute
- 8:51Speaker 1: of it. Yeah. I also loved when they were at
- 8:53Speaker 1: the guns store and everyone in town was just they're
- 8:56Speaker 1: buying the guns. You're like, there was the lesbian moment.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I hope that gets resolved to have a feeling that
- 9:03Speaker 1: and with an em is going to come back and
- 9:05Speaker 1: she does actually want to be with Robin. Also renew
- 9:08Speaker 1: and with an ease show my God on the records
- 9:12Speaker 1: saying and with an evening, I could say it now
- 9:15Speaker 1: on convergive. I really liked it. I'm so excited to
- 9:19Speaker 1: watch more. Um, I find the Russia plot very boring,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and every time we're there, I disagree. Let's say, back
- 9:26Speaker 1: to Hawkins, I don't know, you look great, but I'm
- 9:29Speaker 1: just not you know the I love Hopper, I love
- 9:32Speaker 1: his potline. I think the Russia thing is so off
- 9:34Speaker 1: the rails, and I think that's all. I think it's
- 9:36Speaker 1: amazing because I think it embraces how crazy it is.
- 9:39Speaker 1: But I was also going to say I prefer those
- 9:42Speaker 1: scenes over the gay scene that we got, Like what
- 9:46Speaker 1: did you think? My god? Okay, so it took like
- 9:49Speaker 1: I don't think everyone who were watching it with realize
- 9:51Speaker 1: that that was Will like confessing his feelings about Mike,
- 9:55Speaker 1: but using the language of talking about how Levin feels
- 9:58Speaker 1: about him, Like that's oh gay to be talking about
- 10:02Speaker 1: your feelings, but in a pretend way. Um, I don't
- 10:06Speaker 1: know if we're going to get more than that. Yeah,
- 10:10Speaker 1: I really, because where would it lead? You know, I
- 10:12Speaker 1: think he's going to die. No, who do you think
- 10:16Speaker 1: is going to die? Because obviously some people are gonna die.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I think, Okay, I don't think it's going to die,
- 10:20Speaker 1: but I think something about him being in the upside
- 10:24Speaker 1: down and like his connection the monster they was gonna
- 10:28Speaker 1: come back. They would kill the gay one. He's going
- 10:30Speaker 1: to turn because look, we already have one evil twin Vecna,
- 10:33Speaker 1: and now we need another. When we need there always
- 10:36Speaker 1: has to be too. It's like six in Star Wars.
- 10:38Speaker 1: There are always to master and apprentice, and one will
- 10:42Speaker 1: kill the other the rule of the two or hem rhins,
- 10:44Speaker 1: there's always too. Who else do you think is going
- 10:47Speaker 1: to die? I mean I don't. I didn't really predict,
- 10:49Speaker 1: to be honest, I think your prediction of Max I
- 10:51Speaker 1: think is also. Yeah, I think Max is she's going
- 10:55Speaker 1: to be running up that hill to make a deal
- 10:57Speaker 1: with God sooner rather than later. Yeah, or at least.
- 11:01Speaker 1: But the only thing is they're kind of setting it
- 11:02Speaker 1: up that way, so it might be too obvious. Well
- 11:04Speaker 1: that's how I feel about Steve dying, because everyone is
- 11:07Speaker 1: theorizing that Steve is going to die. But like the
- 11:10Speaker 1: Netflix literally put it on their billboard like Pratty for
- 11:13Speaker 1: Steve or something, so to me, that means he's not
- 11:15Speaker 1: gonna die, because they would not, like, I just don't
- 11:19Speaker 1: think it would be it's too obvious. But you know,
- 11:22Speaker 1: like the Duffer Brothers really like to play into tropes,
- 11:25Speaker 1: which which one Steve the main character. Steve's the with
- 11:28Speaker 1: the hair, the one who we saw at um at
- 11:32Speaker 1: Um fig Oh my god. One time we were having
- 11:36Speaker 1: dinner at Figro Bistro, which is where celebrities. It's a
- 11:41Speaker 1: restaurant you should go to if you either want to
- 11:43Speaker 1: like sit and people watch, or if you want to
- 11:46Speaker 1: if you need some like affirmation that you're wearing a
- 11:49Speaker 1: cute look you want to walk through everyone dyning, that's
- 11:52Speaker 1: a good place to go. Also, they have incredible steak tartar.
- 11:54Speaker 1: But we were having dinner there at one time, and um,
- 11:58Speaker 1: the guy who plays Steve was inside, um with some
- 12:01Speaker 1: hot girl. I honestly can never remember any of their names.
- 12:04Speaker 1: For me, it's always like will like Will to Billy, Billy,
- 12:09Speaker 1: Billy too, Yeah, this is the one with the one
- 12:12Speaker 1: with the long billy too, and then and then you
- 12:13Speaker 1: know that but he's not as hot as Billy Yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 1: And then there's Hopper guy, and then there's one writer
- 12:21Speaker 1: w is her character name. It should all just be
- 12:24Speaker 1: every Stranger Things character should be, not oneonah one, not
- 12:27Speaker 1: when I she's so good every time, I want her
- 12:32Speaker 1: to be in more things. Though. She made that m
- 12:36Speaker 1: rom com with Keanu Reeves a couple of years ago
- 12:40Speaker 1: that was like it was such because it was like
- 12:42Speaker 1: their back baby, and then literally no one including me
- 12:46Speaker 1: saw it. Oh that's so sad. Well, I mean I
- 12:49Speaker 1: would watch more Things if she would be more Things,
- 12:52Speaker 1: because I think she Stranger Things is amazing for her,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and I think Stranger Things is amazing because of her. Well,
- 12:58Speaker 1: that's definitely the reason it was put on everyone's radars. Yes,
- 13:02Speaker 1: because she lent her name to it and that, But
- 13:04Speaker 1: but I also feel like she doesn't need to be
- 13:07Speaker 1: entrapped to the stranger, Like I just need her in
- 13:09Speaker 1: more movies and and Prestige TV. You know what I mean.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I hope, I hope she's making a lot of money.
- 13:15Speaker 1: I'm sure. Yeah, I mean, I'm sure she is. I'm
- 13:17Speaker 1: sure she is there anything else? What has been your
- 13:21Speaker 1: favorite part of the trip so far? Rose? Hanging out
- 13:24Speaker 1: with everyone at the house, Like dinners together have been
- 13:27Speaker 1: really lovely. I think people when they think of Fire
- 13:29Speaker 1: Island and immediately obviously you think like parties, vodka, SODA's,
- 13:35Speaker 1: you know, going to tee, like a lot of sex
- 13:37Speaker 1: or like whatever. And like this trip has been I mean,
- 13:41Speaker 1: sorry to say, like so wholesome, Like it's been so
- 13:44Speaker 1: beautiful and so community driven, and it's been incredible in
- 13:48Speaker 1: a way that I have never experienced on this island
- 13:50Speaker 1: because you know, like this island is like really made
- 13:54Speaker 1: for very specific kind of queer people that don't include us,
- 13:58Speaker 1: that don't include us. And you know, I've always come
- 14:01Speaker 1: to this island like as a guest of other people
- 14:03Speaker 1: or like someone just like figuring it out, and that's
- 14:05Speaker 1: been amazing. But to come here and have a house
- 14:09Speaker 1: and like like Fran who really like put all this
- 14:13Speaker 1: together to have really curated it in such a way that,
- 14:16Speaker 1: you know, like making space for people who would not
- 14:19Speaker 1: usually have a space like this out here. All of
- 14:23Speaker 1: us doing it together has been so fun, Like I
- 14:26Speaker 1: love being the freak cows. Yeah, we are the freak
- 14:29Speaker 1: cows and the poppy juice houses out here too. They
- 14:31Speaker 1: always like cycle fun people through and we've been like
- 14:34Speaker 1: partying together and having late nights and cooking gorgeous dinners ribs.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Laurel is making lobster tonight. What yes fuck I got?
- 14:44Speaker 1: She brought lobster tail. Babe, It's gonna be well. I
- 14:48Speaker 1: made the eggs this morning. Um. France, okay, wait Rose
- 14:50Speaker 1: made a gorgeous pie yesterday. Um that you should maybe
- 14:54Speaker 1: we should start doing recipes. I won't, I won't. But
- 14:58Speaker 1: Fran made a peach basil and something blueberry pie yesterday.
- 15:03Speaker 1: It was chef's kiss and I stuck a bunch of
- 15:07Speaker 1: candles into it and surprised Rose with her on birthday
- 15:11Speaker 1: was my birthday pie A week early, A week early? Um?
- 15:16Speaker 1: What else has been nice? Um? You know yesterday we
- 15:19Speaker 1: were on the beach and I was sitting with two
- 15:21Speaker 1: other trans people have like very quickly we started talking
- 15:24Speaker 1: about trauma and you know, to be doing that next
- 15:27Speaker 1: to a body of water is I love it surrounded
- 15:30Speaker 1: by a bunch of a bunch of faggots, but like
- 15:32Speaker 1: a safe distance away. Yeah, it's been great. I love
- 15:36Speaker 1: Fire Island. I want to come back every summer forever.
- 15:39Speaker 1: It's just like the movie. And this house is like
- 15:41Speaker 1: Nancy Meyer's level. Caucasian is like so gorgeous. I I
- 15:46Speaker 1: put on matching linen set the other day and walked
- 15:49Speaker 1: around here while everyone was up the beach and definitely
- 15:52Speaker 1: felt like, you know, the protagonist and something's got to give,
- 15:57Speaker 1: and something's got to be giving. One of my favorite
- 15:59Speaker 1: part about the trip, honestly, Rose has been like putting
- 16:02Speaker 1: on cute little fits and walking to the pantry. Yeah,
- 16:05Speaker 1: you do it. You like always look adorable, so you
- 16:08Speaker 1: all you always come to start. Okay, you've start, You've
- 16:12Speaker 1: been serving, We have been, we have been. You're the
- 16:14Speaker 1: most popular girl, Well I'm I'm the most popular doll.
- 16:20Speaker 1: We're the most popular dolls in the pantry. I love
- 16:23Speaker 1: changing like five times a day. Yeah, it's been incredible,
- 16:26Speaker 1: just doing little variations on the same outfit to swim
- 16:30Speaker 1: suits today. Fran has been doing a lot of whale tales.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, a lot of a lot of you know,
- 16:35Speaker 1: thong in the afternoon and as you know, a more
- 16:39Speaker 1: modest speedo in the evening. I wonder if anyone is
- 16:43Speaker 1: currently like listening to our podcast somewhere on this island.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Probably not Alo on this island, you say, we've also
- 16:52Speaker 1: been Also, we've also discovered our mutual affection for the
- 16:58Speaker 1: Broadway musical Once on This Island done a particular line
- 17:01Speaker 1: from it, which like this, Oh find the tree, I'll
- 17:05Speaker 1: come back with an goes juicy fat and well bed
- 17:12Speaker 1: she's cutting us off. I hope you include this, TB.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I hope you include the way that you silenced again silent.
- 17:19Speaker 1: We will not be silent. Were you silent or were
- 17:21Speaker 1: you silent when it comes to Phoebe being our producer?
- 17:25Speaker 1: We were silent, and I swear to God you better
- 17:27Speaker 1: include all of this. CB. I want everyone to know.
- 17:41Speaker 1: For the audience you can't see me right now, I'm
- 17:43Speaker 1: wearing a Versaci inspired tennis skirt, forty four spray time
- 17:49Speaker 1: um yellow, a F one's a future for Sacchi coat
- 17:54Speaker 1: and diamond tennis bracelet. Yes, the diamond tennis aunt Janet,
- 18:00Speaker 1: Can I tell you the story about so my aunt?
- 18:04Speaker 1: Um she is. I'm inspired by her a lot. She's
- 18:08Speaker 1: really free spirited, super athletic, really artistic. I just wanted
- 18:11Speaker 1: to travel and see the world. She was in the
- 18:13Speaker 1: Las Vegas airport and she was running to catch her
- 18:15Speaker 1: flight and she was dragging her roly suitcase. But something
- 18:18Speaker 1: was stuck in her suitcase, and she was like, what
- 18:21Speaker 1: the funk is this? And she looks down and there's
- 18:23Speaker 1: a diamond tennis bracelet stuck in the wheel of her suitcase.
- 18:26Speaker 1: And she picks it up and she takes it to
- 18:28Speaker 1: airport security and she's like, hey, I found this, UM,
- 18:32Speaker 1: here's my phone number. If anybody calls looking for it,
- 18:34Speaker 1: I would like them to have it. And no one
- 18:36Speaker 1: ever called a family And she went skiing in the
- 18:41Speaker 1: sky seven years ago last week and uh I and
- 18:47Speaker 1: I got and I took this with me. So and
- 18:49Speaker 1: you know, it's crazy. I never started wearing it until
- 18:51Speaker 1: I moved to l A because I wasn't worth I was.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I struggle with worthiness a lot, and I was always
- 18:58Speaker 1: like saving the tennis bracelet for a special occasion or something,
- 19:01Speaker 1: and I was like, no, every day is a special
- 19:03Speaker 1: occasion put on that bracelet. That is the power of jewelry.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I do think very nicely leads us into what we're
- 19:11Speaker 1: talking about today, because this kind of bracelet, to you
- 19:14Speaker 1: is what the pearls are to the women of the
- 19:16Speaker 1: First wi The pearls which are kind, which are really
- 19:19Speaker 1: the inciting It's well, the inciting incident of the film
- 19:22Speaker 1: is soccer Channing committing suicide. But the pearls with with
- 19:27Speaker 1: the fantastic voice over acting. It was such an interesting
- 19:30Speaker 1: choice to read. But they used all of their voices
- 19:33Speaker 1: in the in the flashback. Yeah it is. It is
- 19:36Speaker 1: so for anyone who doesn't know. The First Wives Club
- 19:39Speaker 1: is a film about a bunch of women who have
- 19:41Speaker 1: been left by their husbands and decided to get revenge.
- 19:44Speaker 1: That is the basic cremise as played by Goldie Hawn,
- 19:47Speaker 1: Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and then the soccer channing soccer
- 19:52Speaker 1: the scene. But yeah, you're right, and that the prologue
- 19:55Speaker 1: of the movie where they're all you know, young when
- 19:58Speaker 1: they meet at college and form their lifelong friendships. Um,
- 20:01Speaker 1: the actresses do dub all the younger actors and it
- 20:04Speaker 1: is extremely uncanny. Yeah, it's it's it's an interesting choice.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Was this movie like important to your childhood? Um, like
- 20:14Speaker 1: when did it come into your life? Or like what
- 20:16Speaker 1: were the what are the formative elements of it? Honestly,
- 20:19Speaker 1: I love I've never really connected with romantic partnerships as
- 20:23Speaker 1: a plot line that I really was drawn to in
- 20:26Speaker 1: film and narrative. Like I I'm much more interested in
- 20:29Speaker 1: ambition and friendship as like things that drive a plot.
- 20:34Speaker 1: And this movie was all about like girlfriends coming together
- 20:37Speaker 1: to support each other, sisters are doing it for themselves. Yes,
- 20:40Speaker 1: and the wardrobes were great, and that they all went
- 20:43Speaker 1: off to do different things and then came back together.
- 20:45Speaker 1: That just seemed like a real fantasy to me. And um,
- 20:50Speaker 1: you know Eliza with Berkeley, isn't it as as a
- 20:52Speaker 1: new wife? I just I just I think just the
- 20:56Speaker 1: story of them all coming together and at the end
- 20:57Speaker 1: having their community center and then wearing power suits and
- 21:00Speaker 1: singing at the end, I was like, that's the happy
- 21:01Speaker 1: ending I wanted my life. My happy ending is friendship.
- 21:04Speaker 1: My happy ending is community and connecting with my girlfriends
- 21:09Speaker 1: and supporting each other. And that was honestly one of
- 21:13Speaker 1: the first movies where I saw that as an opportunity
- 21:17Speaker 1: as something that was possible as a happy ending where
- 21:20Speaker 1: they didn't drive off the cliff at the end. Yes,
- 21:24Speaker 1: one of my favorite movies. It's one of my favorite
- 21:27Speaker 1: movies as well. And I love the ending because I
- 21:30Speaker 1: think the ending was a really bold choice. But like
- 21:32Speaker 1: I like happy endings, yeah, me too. I also like similarly,
- 21:36Speaker 1: like I have a hard time latching onto like you know,
- 21:39Speaker 1: romance plot lines, and like for the engine of this
- 21:42Speaker 1: movie to be revenge is very like that is my tea. Honestly.
- 21:47Speaker 1: We were just talking about The Northman, that Nicole Kinman
- 21:49Speaker 1: movie that came out, and the whole the engine of
- 21:51Speaker 1: that entire movie is revenge, like Crystal Clear, and I
- 21:55Speaker 1: was just locked into a movie that I normally would
- 21:58Speaker 1: not be, you know, concerned with, because as revenge as
- 22:01Speaker 1: a concept I think is very amazing. But also in
- 22:04Speaker 1: revenge movies, like I think you eventually have to reckon
- 22:07Speaker 1: with what comes after revenge, which I think is very
- 22:11Speaker 1: much the end of this movie, because they realize, you know,
- 22:14Speaker 1: kind of at the last minute, that just getting revenge
- 22:18Speaker 1: on their husbands is not enough. They actually want to
- 22:20Speaker 1: do something that helps the world. They're paying it forward
- 22:25Speaker 1: and how it brought them together. You know, this challenge
- 22:28Speaker 1: that they were all facing, and they also they were
- 22:30Speaker 1: all suffering in silence, right, they were all getting together.
- 22:32Speaker 1: I mean like I'm fine, I'm fine. In reality, everybody
- 22:35Speaker 1: was really struggling and needed support and getting together with
- 22:39Speaker 1: your girlfriends and having a moment, a really staggering moment
- 22:44Speaker 1: two realize that, like, hey, I'm going to be vulnerable
- 22:47Speaker 1: and share something that I am not proud of or
- 22:49Speaker 1: that makes me uncomfortable or that I'm ashamed of. And
- 22:52Speaker 1: and then everybody share something similar. Well, that's one of
- 22:55Speaker 1: my favorite parts of the movie is you know, so
- 22:57Speaker 1: they go to the funual, they go to stoccer Chan
- 23:00Speaker 1: funeral and have brunch afterwards, and they're all kind of
- 23:02Speaker 1: telling these like spinning these bullshit you know, stories about
- 23:06Speaker 1: their lives, and you know, after a couple of Bloody Mary's,
- 23:09Speaker 1: the truth comes out and they realize they're all fucking
- 23:11Speaker 1: miserable and decide to team up and do something about it.
- 23:14Speaker 1: And who hasn't had that experience of like, you, even
- 23:17Speaker 1: even with the people you're closest to, you want to spin,
- 23:20Speaker 1: You want to present the best version of yourself. Um,
- 23:23Speaker 1: but usually when you finally let that guard down and
- 23:26Speaker 1: they're like, Okay, actually, everything fucking sucks right now. That
- 23:29Speaker 1: other person, if they're really a good judy, they usually
- 23:32Speaker 1: are going to meet you halfway and be like, yeah,
- 23:34Speaker 1: my life fucking sucks right now too. Yeah. And I
- 23:37Speaker 1: had a moment exactly like that that strengthened me to
- 23:40Speaker 1: make some really significant changes in my life. What was it?
- 23:42Speaker 1: I was um at dinner. It was like a COVID
- 23:45Speaker 1: dinner in New York outside coldest ship. We're all wearing
- 23:49Speaker 1: right and UM, a couple of and you know my
- 23:52Speaker 1: art camp collective. It was a couple of us and
- 23:54Speaker 1: we were getting ready to go wheat pasting. We like
- 23:56Speaker 1: go and put up art at night, like park. It's
- 23:59Speaker 1: fun do art, make crimes make Yeah, and U and
- 24:06Speaker 1: one of the girls was talking about UM, a challenge
- 24:09Speaker 1: she was having with this chick she was seeing, And
- 24:13Speaker 1: it turned out it was the same problem we were
- 24:15Speaker 1: all having, and we had never We've been friends for
- 24:18Speaker 1: two years and none of us knew that we all
- 24:20Speaker 1: had the same challenge with our partners. And now I'm
- 24:26Speaker 1: divorced and I hadn't I hadn't left my marriage yet.
- 24:29Speaker 1: So and like everybody has challenges, right, it doesn't really matter,
- 24:32Speaker 1: Like everybody has challenges, they're they're pretty normal. I think
- 24:36Speaker 1: normalizing our problems is really important and not stigmatizing them
- 24:39Speaker 1: and not blaming, just being like, yeah, this is a
- 24:41Speaker 1: challenge and like you can fight through it, or you
- 24:43Speaker 1: can you can remove yourself from the situation. You have options.
- 24:45Speaker 1: But it's it's nice to talk about the options with
- 24:47Speaker 1: your girls. I mean I exclusively have to workshop things
- 24:51Speaker 1: with my girls. There are things that like obviously my
- 24:53Speaker 1: therapists can help me with, but like it's like, no,
- 24:56Speaker 1: my girls are going to give me the real, real
- 24:57Speaker 1: because therapists, I mean I know that there are like
- 25:01Speaker 1: you know that that's actual professional reasons why you can't
- 25:04Speaker 1: just tell me what to do because but like therapists
- 25:07Speaker 1: just don't tell you what to do sometimes sometimes you
- 25:09Speaker 1: I need a therapist to be a little prescriptive. I
- 25:11Speaker 1: have a similar problem with mine and that she is
- 25:14Speaker 1: more of a sounding board. And like my therapist, my
- 25:17Speaker 1: therapist is really good at being that person who is saying,
- 25:21Speaker 1: I'm an objective voice telling you that the thing that
- 25:23Speaker 1: you're thinking about your life is not crazy, You're not
- 25:25Speaker 1: blowing it out of proportion, and I want to give
- 25:28Speaker 1: you the tools to deal with it, but sometimes I
- 25:31Speaker 1: want to say, like, can you just tell me what
- 25:33Speaker 1: I should do in this situation? Also, I need my friends,
- 25:37Speaker 1: and your friends can. But also I do find like
- 25:40Speaker 1: you have to find that balance with your friends because
- 25:42Speaker 1: I don't always want every conversation I have with my
- 25:44Speaker 1: friends to be processing to be talking about trauma. She's
- 25:47Speaker 1: talking about me. I have that girl I'm talking about
- 25:52Speaker 1: how I show up to our friendship. I don't always
- 25:55Speaker 1: want to show up to my friends and be like
- 25:57Speaker 1: I'm going to spend the next hour that we're talking
- 25:59Speaker 1: talking about everything that's going on in my life. You know,
- 26:01Speaker 1: we should, that should be part of it, but it
- 26:03Speaker 1: doesn't always need to. Well, there's also a very big
- 26:06Speaker 1: difference between coming to your friends because you want to
- 26:09Speaker 1: vent and coming to your friends because you want a
- 26:11Speaker 1: problem solve. Because like, if you come to me, I'm
- 26:15Speaker 1: not just gonna let you vent unless you tell me
- 26:18Speaker 1: that that's what you need. But like, if you come
- 26:20Speaker 1: to me to complain about something, I will hold space
- 26:23Speaker 1: for it very quickly, and then I'm gonna be like, Okay,
- 26:25Speaker 1: so what's the game plan let's do this. And I
- 26:29Speaker 1: not everyone wants that, you know, like not everyone. Sometimes
- 26:32Speaker 1: people just want to externally process and that's okay too.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Something I unfortunately have this like logic mechanism in my
- 26:38Speaker 1: brain that can't turn off. You do, but you can
- 26:40Speaker 1: turn it off. Can. I have this problem a lot
- 26:43Speaker 1: with my mother where I go to her and it
- 26:47Speaker 1: kind of is like maybe a little similar to Diane
- 26:49Speaker 1: Keaton's relationship with her mother in the movie. I go
- 26:52Speaker 1: to my mom and I want to vent about what's
- 26:54Speaker 1: going on with me, and what I want from her
- 26:57Speaker 1: is her to go, oh no, sweetie, that awful. I'm
- 27:01Speaker 1: so sorry. That sucks. But my mom is like, well,
- 27:04Speaker 1: here's what you should do, here's the plan. How do
- 27:06Speaker 1: we spend this? Like and I just sometimes have to
- 27:10Speaker 1: say to her, I, please don't do that to me
- 27:12Speaker 1: right now. I just want you to like do the whatever.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Like conversation version is of like stroking my hair and
- 27:19Speaker 1: it's all going to be okay, yeah, And I'm like you,
- 27:23Speaker 1: I like, I'm like, okay, we're going to mood board this. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:26Speaker 1: We're going to make our well for me. It's and
- 27:28Speaker 1: this is what First Wives Club about. It was like, yes,
- 27:30Speaker 1: you convent, but creativity is healing, having a project, a
- 27:34Speaker 1: thing to do. If it's revenge, but it's like it's
- 27:36Speaker 1: especially you know what's funny because I so not a
- 27:41Speaker 1: memory of like ruining their ex husbands lives through their
- 27:44Speaker 1: project to me, the remaining Like, yes, it was kind
- 27:47Speaker 1: of the initial motivation, but it was really all of
- 27:50Speaker 1: them finding purpose and work together. And they also knew
- 27:53Speaker 1: that their husbands were corrupt, Like they weren't doing something
- 28:00Speaker 1: showing who were just like fine, they were just giving
- 28:02Speaker 1: them a taste of the Yes, it's very satiated. One
- 28:06Speaker 1: of them was not cruel, it's just how it is.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I mean, one of them was sucking a teenager, one
- 28:11Speaker 1: of them was scamming people and like selling stolen property.
- 28:16Speaker 1: And then one of them was fucking there counselor, which
- 28:22Speaker 1: Sara Jessica Parker was with Morty who's the scamper. Oh
- 28:25Speaker 1: my god, she's so good enough, so sexy three Sex
- 28:30Speaker 1: in the City Sara Jessica Parker Sex in the City. Yeah,
- 28:33Speaker 1: I didn't know that. Wow, that's crazy. I mean, I yeah,
- 28:37Speaker 1: revenge is I think I think it gets a bad rap,
- 28:40Speaker 1: but I actually think it's a very productive motive sometimes,
- 28:45Speaker 1: Like I think there's something I think you were saying earlier,
- 28:48Speaker 1: like the way they paid it forward, Like I think
- 28:51Speaker 1: that is an effective way to kind of work through
- 28:54Speaker 1: something in a revenge like with the revenge path. Have
- 28:58Speaker 1: either of you ever gotten revenge on somebody, because I
- 29:02Speaker 1: think I have. I feel like of my success is
- 29:06Speaker 1: like a product of like revenge. Well, I do. I
- 29:08Speaker 1: do subscribe to the idea that living well is the
- 29:11Speaker 1: best revenge. I don't know that I've ever enacted vengeance
- 29:15Speaker 1: on someone. I certainly have let things play out in
- 29:20Speaker 1: a way where someone who did me wrong got what
- 29:23Speaker 1: was coming to them. And I also have let my
- 29:27Speaker 1: life play out in a way where my own success
- 29:30Speaker 1: has proven people who have done me wrong wrong, And
- 29:34Speaker 1: to me, that is the best kind of revenge. Yeah,
- 29:37Speaker 1: I'm going to echo that SENTI I definitely like I
- 29:44Speaker 1: I feel like I was like hustling my way through
- 29:47Speaker 1: my first like years in New York being like I'm
- 29:50Speaker 1: going to prove every single high school bully that I
- 29:54Speaker 1: ever had, like that I can be successful any person
- 29:56Speaker 1: that ever didn't believe in me or whatever. But beyond that,
- 29:59Speaker 1: I actually I mean, I'm going to be very vague
- 30:01Speaker 1: because I don't want this to get back to the person.
- 30:03Speaker 1: But one time I always seeing someone for a while,
- 30:07Speaker 1: Like I was super duber like in love with this person,
- 30:10Speaker 1: and we broke up in a way that was like
- 30:12Speaker 1: just not amicable, and they did something that was like
- 30:15Speaker 1: very shitty on the kind of quasi cheating level that
- 30:19Speaker 1: was just like very painful or whatever, and I forgot
- 30:20Speaker 1: about this person for like years. Good revenge, yes, yes, yes,
- 30:24Speaker 1: yes that the best revenge happens years later. And I
- 30:27Speaker 1: also yes, exactly exactly, And um, you know, I ended
- 30:34Speaker 1: up hooking up with this person years later in New
- 30:38Speaker 1: York while they were seeing someone else, So they were
- 30:40Speaker 1: cheating on their new partner while hooking up with me
- 30:43Speaker 1: on the side. I know, I'm not proud of it,
- 30:46Speaker 1: but I'm but I also don't care. Um. And one
- 30:49Speaker 1: time I got into an uberpool, remember uberpool, Like I
- 30:52Speaker 1: was getting home. Yeah, it's so fun to pay three
- 30:59Speaker 1: dollars and seven the sixth cents to to sit in
- 31:02Speaker 1: the backseat of a Toyota camera with two people who
- 31:06Speaker 1: are doing meth and trying to figure out if you
- 31:09Speaker 1: want to come home with them. So my god, You're like,
- 31:11Speaker 1: I'm just trying to get to the airport. Yeah. And
- 31:13Speaker 1: this was like an era of nightlife where like I
- 31:15Speaker 1: only took uber pools. It was all I could afford.
- 31:18Speaker 1: And like I got into an uber pool and sat
- 31:20Speaker 1: there for like three minutes and the woman next to
- 31:22Speaker 1: me goes like, are you fran or whatever? And I
- 31:25Speaker 1: was like, what, Okay, now I've had a conversation with
- 31:28Speaker 1: this person. And this person was like, oh, I would
- 31:30Speaker 1: have gotten out yeah, but this person was like, oh,
- 31:32Speaker 1: I'm mutual friends with blank, this person that I was,
- 31:36Speaker 1: this new person that I was hooking up with, and
- 31:38Speaker 1: they were like, oh, yeah, he seems like super happy.
- 31:41Speaker 1: I'm really good friends with him and his partner and
- 31:43Speaker 1: blah blah blah, they seem so happy or whatever. And
- 31:46Speaker 1: I think I was a little drunk and I was
- 31:49Speaker 1: I remember being like, you know, I have known blah
- 31:52Speaker 1: blah blah for a very long time, and I will
- 31:54Speaker 1: say like I don't think he's being true to his
- 31:58Speaker 1: partner or whatever. And I basically wanted a very small
- 32:01Speaker 1: seed that was just like I don't like this person
- 32:04Speaker 1: is kind of maybe cheating on your friend or whatever
- 32:07Speaker 1: with me, But like I didn't say that, but I
- 32:11Speaker 1: like and and then like I never saw that person again,
- 32:13Speaker 1: and like, I think we stopped talking up or whatever,
- 32:15Speaker 1: and I don't know if it ever got back to
- 32:16Speaker 1: that person, but if it did, it's like years later.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Revenge basically, you know what is part of all this?
- 32:32Speaker 1: Like living well, it's the best. Revenge is something that
- 32:34Speaker 1: I feel is very much a product of of knowing
- 32:37Speaker 1: that that is something that I am uh striving for.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Is when I go and look at who watches my
- 32:43Speaker 1: Instagram stories? Yeah, that it's like an intricate little like
- 32:50Speaker 1: vanity exercise, like or like I go and scroll through
- 32:54Speaker 1: my social media looking at it as if I am
- 32:58Speaker 1: a person who was looking at it from the outside
- 33:01Speaker 1: and trying to understand the story it tells. I do
- 33:04Speaker 1: think that social media, like by and large, is a
- 33:07Speaker 1: byproduct of that idea of wanting to, you know, stick
- 33:12Speaker 1: it to the people who have stuck it to you.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Try not to look at like my story views. But
- 33:17Speaker 1: I do often see my people that have sextually, you know,
- 33:22Speaker 1: ghosted me watching every story and I'm like, you can't
- 33:26Speaker 1: get enough. No, no, it's hot. You put on a
- 33:29Speaker 1: great show. I put on a great show, and that's appreciated.
- 33:34Speaker 1: And there's so much value in putting on a great show.
- 33:37Speaker 1: You know, entertainment has so much value people. It's really
- 33:40Speaker 1: vulnerable to put yourself out there and a lot of
- 33:43Speaker 1: people just can't do it. And like on topic, I
- 33:46Speaker 1: do have divorce energy, like I feel like a lot
- 33:49Speaker 1: of it. What does that mean to you? I think
- 33:51Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of like what I feel like,
- 33:54Speaker 1: I'm kind of like a very like I don't need
- 33:57Speaker 1: a man, like I'm just a solo queen or ever,
- 34:00Speaker 1: kind of like Eartha Kit Tracy Ellis Ross. I actually
- 34:07Speaker 1: think you have second wife energy. I think you're more
- 34:12Speaker 1: of the Sarah Jessica Parker would love in the situation.
- 34:15Speaker 1: And I'm too smart to be a trophy wife though,
- 34:17Speaker 1: but I would love to be. Wait, I'm going to
- 34:18Speaker 1: stop you right there. Yeah you're like if you are,
- 34:21Speaker 1: you are that's that's hor phobic. It is okay call me.
- 34:29Speaker 1: You are not too smart to be a trophy wive.
- 34:31Speaker 1: I've learned so much from trophy wives. A lot of
- 34:34Speaker 1: a lot of people I really care about love and
- 34:35Speaker 1: trust have taught me a lot about worthiness because I
- 34:39Speaker 1: think trophy wifery is just like full time sex work
- 34:43Speaker 1: kind of yeah, it's one client, and like you can
- 34:46Speaker 1: agree or disagree, but like somebody's taking care of you
- 34:49Speaker 1: and paying for your life and you can get your
- 34:52Speaker 1: nails done and all that stuff or whatever it means
- 34:54Speaker 1: to you. But I think it's just kind of owning
- 34:56Speaker 1: the job. It's like, I'm not apologizing. It's kind of
- 34:59Speaker 1: sex work that is legitimized by our social structure, right
- 35:05Speaker 1: because you've got a man, so you're legit now. And
- 35:07Speaker 1: it's also super problematic, right because like now, like the
- 35:09Speaker 1: trophy wife exit strategy is kind of like what a
- 35:12Speaker 1: lot of strippers want, being like a wife in a
- 35:16Speaker 1: heterosexual relationship. Even sometimes, like I think a lot about
- 35:19Speaker 1: that that Paris is Burning clip where that girl is
- 35:22Speaker 1: like that there's a sex worker in Paris is Burning
- 35:25Speaker 1: and she's kind of giving a spield to the camera
- 35:26Speaker 1: and she's like, why is what I do like any
- 35:29Speaker 1: different than the wife who really wants that washer and
- 35:33Speaker 1: dryer and the man her husband doesn't want to give
- 35:35Speaker 1: it to her, but she's going to give him what
- 35:37Speaker 1: he wants that evening and so the next morning he
- 35:40Speaker 1: buys the washer and dry or like, why is that
- 35:42Speaker 1: any different than what I do. Like, I think a
- 35:44Speaker 1: lot about that. Clean clothes are amazing. Do you ever
- 35:46Speaker 1: watch Real Houseyes of Beverly Hills. I don't, Okay, So
- 35:49Speaker 1: that is trophy whiffery to the like nth degree. Not all,
- 35:54Speaker 1: not all of them, because a lot of them the
- 35:56Speaker 1: women are are the ones who are bringing the capital
- 35:59Speaker 1: to the relationship, as in First Wives Club, Because you know,
- 36:02Speaker 1: you have Goldie Hawn, who is this Oscar winning actress
- 36:07Speaker 1: who is the one who made her director husband's career.
- 36:10Speaker 1: You have Bette Midler who says like she's the one
- 36:12Speaker 1: who supported her husband until he became successful, and once
- 36:16Speaker 1: he gained success, that's when he left her. And then
- 36:20Speaker 1: Diane Keaton who like, you know, we don't really know
- 36:22Speaker 1: what her deal is, but like she has a very
- 36:24Speaker 1: nice apartment, so she's still sleeping with her anymore and
- 36:29Speaker 1: ends up buying his advertising agency. I think because she
- 36:32Speaker 1: maybe got out of the business to have their child.
- 36:37Speaker 1: That's maybe what we're supposed to understand is like she
- 36:40Speaker 1: let him be the one who focused on his career
- 36:43Speaker 1: while she focused on more domestic pursuits. So raising a
- 36:47Speaker 1: lesbian yeah, raising, oh my god, iconic this is, And
- 36:52Speaker 1: I'm just thinking of like where what this movie meant
- 36:56Speaker 1: to me and the ways that I experienced it as
- 36:58Speaker 1: a child, like definitely younger than I should have. I
- 37:01Speaker 1: think I probably saw it for the first time on HBO.
- 37:04Speaker 1: It was definitely on HBO a lot when I was
- 37:07Speaker 1: a kid, and I think, like the things that I
- 37:09Speaker 1: responded to were these fabulous women. I think also because
- 37:15Speaker 1: I was a child of divorce, there was something in
- 37:19Speaker 1: it that I like. It was like like calling to
- 37:22Speaker 1: like um and then also all the gay stuff um
- 37:28Speaker 1: of the gay as revenge. I feel like gay is revenge.
- 37:33Speaker 1: You know. This is like I still struggle with my
- 37:35Speaker 1: like identity sexually, not struggle. I don't struggle with it more,
- 37:38Speaker 1: but but it's my who I want to fuck right
- 37:41Speaker 1: is basically is sexuality to me. It's also a personal expression.
- 37:44Speaker 1: But it's always changing. Yeah, it's always like who, what
- 37:46Speaker 1: I'm attracted to, what I want to call in who
- 37:48Speaker 1: I think is intriguing. It's it's changing because I'm an
- 37:51Speaker 1: Aquarius and I get bored, so I like to change.
- 37:54Speaker 1: So what does that mean with my sexual identity. I
- 37:56Speaker 1: don't know, but like the whole like gay as as
- 37:59Speaker 1: a revenge like daddy, I'm a lesbian, a big one,
- 38:02Speaker 1: you know, like as to funk with him. Like part
- 38:04Speaker 1: of me was like, that's fucking amazing, and part of
- 38:06Speaker 1: me was like, wait what it's because it's yeah, that's
- 38:10Speaker 1: the worst possible thing this man could hear is that? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
- 38:15Speaker 1: because if the yeah exactly, if the conflict is queerness,
- 38:19Speaker 1: like that is like right, it was a nineties movie,
- 38:25Speaker 1: and I still love the movie. Nothing's perfect. Things perfect,
- 38:29Speaker 1: There's plenty of things that aren't perfect about it, but
- 38:32Speaker 1: like it's very long, it's a little long. It's it's
- 38:36Speaker 1: a little long, is it. I loved every minute you
- 38:38Speaker 1: know what else is really long nine to five, which
- 38:40Speaker 1: is kind of in such a good movie. That's another
- 38:42Speaker 1: real I mean I enjoyed every minute of it. And
- 38:47Speaker 1: how they wrote that movie too, how it came together,
- 38:50Speaker 1: Like apparently I have I fan called really hard on
- 38:53Speaker 1: all of those actresses, right, so um, apparently they really
- 38:57Speaker 1: did all smoke pot and talk about the anses of
- 39:00Speaker 1: what they would do to their boss, and that's how
- 39:01Speaker 1: they wrote those scenes. No where, Yeah, I think they
- 39:04Speaker 1: were all smoking pot. Who is the Who's probably probably
- 39:08Speaker 1: with Jane Well they're all stone. Well, I think Lily
- 39:11Speaker 1: would be the one to bring it out, to bring
- 39:13Speaker 1: the weight. And apparently that was like a real they
- 39:15Speaker 1: really did interact and like have that moment, and that's
- 39:18Speaker 1: how they wrote it into the movie, which is how
- 39:19Speaker 1: I make my movies. Is I really just write what
- 39:22Speaker 1: really happened in real life. And then I hid and
- 39:25Speaker 1: Jane was like the engine that made that movie happen.
- 39:29Speaker 1: And I remember she brought in Lily because she was
- 39:31Speaker 1: because she was a lesbian. She was like Lily brings
- 39:35Speaker 1: that in factor. She know, she brings in a certain audience.
- 39:39Speaker 1: She's not your average woman, Like this is like perfect.
- 39:42Speaker 1: And then of course like she brought in Dolly. I
- 39:44Speaker 1: think they had already worked together or something, but like,
- 39:47Speaker 1: wasn't that Dolly's first acting person only still not only no,
- 39:50Speaker 1: no no, and she's no phenominal best little her house.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Yes she did. That's a good movie. Yeah yeah, um
- 39:59Speaker 1: I love also but yeah that that movie is so good.
- 40:02Speaker 1: And she I remember, didn't she like didn't Dolly write
- 40:05Speaker 1: the song? My she she didn't nails like like the
- 40:10Speaker 1: she I can do it right now? Yeah she did that,
- 40:14Speaker 1: she wrote it and she was like I got the
- 40:15Speaker 1: song idea and then she went up to Jane and
- 40:17Speaker 1: Lily it was like, what do you think? And she
- 40:18Speaker 1: sang it and did the rhythm with her nails and
- 40:20Speaker 1: they were like, they were like, it's a hit, yeah,
- 40:22Speaker 1: And it was. Honestly, it was the probably like an
- 40:26Speaker 1: imminent part of like what happens when you when a
- 40:29Speaker 1: song defines movie promotion or whatever, because that movie, that
- 40:32Speaker 1: song was everywhere along with the movie's promotion, and it
- 40:36Speaker 1: reminds me of like um Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga,
- 40:41Speaker 1: or I was going to say, um Survivor for Charlie's Angel.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Oh no, wait, was yea independent woman? Independent woman? Sorry?
- 40:49Speaker 1: Sorry sorry for that was like kind of the moment
- 40:53Speaker 1: Camerondi and Destiny. Yes, I also love that one. When
- 40:56Speaker 1: we when we emailed you and asked you about topics,
- 40:58Speaker 1: one of your alts was Coyote Ugly. Oh yeah, which
- 41:02Speaker 1: we got it. I would love to talk about Kyote
- 41:04Speaker 1: Ugly to me canonically, Kyoe Ugly. I don't know why
- 41:08Speaker 1: this is, but it's a Thanksgiving movie. I always watched
- 41:12Speaker 1: it on Thanksgiving and like, I don't know, there's just
- 41:15Speaker 1: something about it. But they're all sitting around the table
- 41:18Speaker 1: counting money together food movie about chosen family. It is
- 41:23Speaker 1: a movie about chosen family. That movie made me want
- 41:25Speaker 1: to be a stripper, hands down. Yeah. I mean it
- 41:28Speaker 1: was because remember that when tire Banks is like we
- 41:31Speaker 1: made three dollars tonight, and she had all this cash
- 41:33Speaker 1: and all these girls were sitting around the table. Romantic
- 41:36Speaker 1: plotline be gone, not that inc It was girls hanging
- 41:40Speaker 1: out together talking about money. And this is what I
- 41:42Speaker 1: like to do. I like to hang out with my girls,
- 41:44Speaker 1: and I like to talk about how we're going to
- 41:45Speaker 1: get money and that. And they all looked hot and
- 41:48Speaker 1: they were slutty, and I wanted all of those things.
- 41:51Speaker 1: And then some amazing music and she's an artist, she
- 41:55Speaker 1: becomes she does this job because she needs the gear
- 41:58Speaker 1: to make her music so that she can be songwriter.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Because being an artist costs money and time and time
- 42:06Speaker 1: to do it. So you take these jobs that are
- 42:08Speaker 1: higher paying so that you have the time and the
- 42:10Speaker 1: freedom to create your art. And I just saw her
- 42:12Speaker 1: doing that. I remember on her like Apple computer that
- 42:15Speaker 1: was like the new remember they came out and they
- 42:17Speaker 1: all had colors, and I was just like, I want
- 42:19Speaker 1: to be hanging out in my New York loft, like
- 42:21Speaker 1: making a bunch of cash and making art when she
- 42:24Speaker 1: gets robbed, and when she gets robbed, keeps the money
- 42:26Speaker 1: in the freezer and they find it. Yeah, but then
- 42:28Speaker 1: she rebuilds. Oh and also her best friend is played
- 42:31Speaker 1: by Melanie Lynskey, who who played those kinds of roles
- 42:35Speaker 1: for literally decades before. She's now getting her flowers and
- 42:39Speaker 1: yellow jackets. How when did you remember when you saw Okay,
- 42:42Speaker 1: Like how old you were or like I was probably like,
- 42:46Speaker 1: oh my god, well what year did it come out?
- 42:49Speaker 1: Two thousand? I turned fourteen. I was thirteen and fourteen,
- 42:53Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, like decade little did you know that?
- 42:55Speaker 1: Like a decade later or however long? It was literally
- 42:58Speaker 1: a decade later I became Mr bart three and like
- 43:02Speaker 1: and not just I mean like literally, like you are
- 43:03Speaker 1: sitting at home idolizing like strippers on Petty Ugly and
- 43:06Speaker 1: then like you know, years and years later j Lo
- 43:10Speaker 1: would be motor boating you and hustlers like truly, like
- 43:13Speaker 1: that is the full it is a full circle moment. Yeah. Yeah,
- 43:18Speaker 1: when you walk differently after Jlo feels you up, I
- 43:22Speaker 1: have to. I mean, I don't know if you. I mean,
- 43:24Speaker 1: we can take it out if you don't want to
- 43:25Speaker 1: talk about it. I would love to know more about
- 43:27Speaker 1: like just being on Hustlers. I remember after the movie,
- 43:30Speaker 1: shortly after the movie came out, you wrote a really long,
- 43:33Speaker 1: super thoughtful, like kind of Instagram story post just about
- 43:38Speaker 1: the nuances of like that movie's relationship to like sex work,
- 43:41Speaker 1: and like your relationship to it. Like what was the
- 43:43Speaker 1: story of like being a part of that movie. It
- 43:45Speaker 1: was amazing. It was my big break. Literally, I got
- 43:48Speaker 1: an email around my birthday, from my thirty first birthday,
- 43:52Speaker 1: I think, uh, saying, hey, do you want an audition
- 43:55Speaker 1: for Hustlers starring Jennifer Lopez? And I was like, and
- 43:57Speaker 1: also every other stars yes. And I remember I think
- 44:02Speaker 1: I was driving or something, and I was like, I'm
- 44:05Speaker 1: going to be in that fucking movie. I just said it.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I was like, I'm going to be in this fucking movie.
- 44:09Speaker 1: So I auditioned, and I meet Lorene Scafaria, the writer
- 44:11Speaker 1: and director who I really admire, who is a badass.
- 44:15Speaker 1: And I do the audition and then they offered me
- 44:18Speaker 1: the part and they're like, also, will you be the
- 44:20Speaker 1: intimacy coordinator? Yeah? Yeah, So I was like sure, we
- 44:26Speaker 1: called it stripper consultant, comfort consultant because there weren't sex scenes.
- 44:29Speaker 1: They weren't simulating sex, but like they needed help, you know,
- 44:33Speaker 1: making the stripper scenes real. And so I was there.
- 44:35Speaker 1: So j Low was like what would I say in
- 44:37Speaker 1: a situation like this? And like how would I move?
- 44:39Speaker 1: And like you know, what is this like? And like
- 44:41Speaker 1: what would I say to a guy in this? And
- 44:42Speaker 1: I just you know, she asked a lot of thoughtful
- 44:45Speaker 1: questions and she didn't need that much help. She's Jennifer
- 44:47Speaker 1: Lopez just called them all scum. Yeah. Well I was like,
- 44:51Speaker 1: I was like, well, I told her. She was like,
- 44:52Speaker 1: what would I say if Usher walked in the club?
- 44:54Speaker 1: And I was like, ask him his name? Yeah. The
- 44:59Speaker 1: movie that was The Couch, It's like what's your name?
- 45:02Speaker 1: Because that's what you have to do when there's somebody
- 45:04Speaker 1: who's big, you got to act like they're just a
- 45:06Speaker 1: regular person. And it was a great scene. It was
- 45:11Speaker 1: such a cool experience. I wouldn't have traded it for anything,
- 45:15Speaker 1: you know, because it I wanted. I've always wanted to
- 45:18Speaker 1: be in movies and make movies, and that was my opportunity.
- 45:20Speaker 1: And that's a pretty good one. Do you think do
- 45:22Speaker 1: you think it's a really like fair and thoughtful depiction
- 45:27Speaker 1: of that industry, of the industry experience. I did not
- 45:35Speaker 1: scam a bunch of guys out of that much money.
- 45:36Speaker 1: But let me tell you, I wish I did. I
- 45:39Speaker 1: wish I did because I remember when that cut article
- 45:41Speaker 1: came out and I was working in the clubs in Manhattan,
- 45:45Speaker 1: and look, stripping in Manhattan is the hardest ship I've
- 45:49Speaker 1: I've done a lot of hard things, but it's tough.
- 45:52Speaker 1: It is tough. I learned so much about myself. I
- 45:54Speaker 1: became so much stronger. But it's a really intense. It's
- 45:59Speaker 1: capitalism on steroids, right, It's like all of these people,
- 46:03Speaker 1: uh who work in New York and who can afford
- 46:06Speaker 1: New York City strip clubs, they're intense, intense. They want
- 46:10Speaker 1: your soul because they've sold theirs and they want yours,
- 46:15Speaker 1: you know. And I don't want to say all everyone,
- 46:17Speaker 1: but it's intense, and like, sometimes don't you just wish
- 46:20Speaker 1: they were fucking sleeping instead of trying to gnaw on
- 46:24Speaker 1: your nipples? Yeah, Like if I could give someone ketamine
- 46:29Speaker 1: to go have a nice nap instead of chewing on
- 46:32Speaker 1: my tits, go to sleep, go to sleep sleep. Yeah.
- 46:39Speaker 1: So so, look like I know what, I love a
- 46:42Speaker 1: movie about women doing bad things because I am not
- 46:45Speaker 1: a good person. This is why why we love I mean,
- 46:52Speaker 1: they were like, you know, catech good. I feel they were.
- 46:54Speaker 1: They were good. I mean, honestly, I think it's just
- 46:56Speaker 1: kind of like owning that, like a we all have
- 46:58Speaker 1: shadow sides, we all do things, we all do bad things. Yeah,
- 47:11Speaker 1: for so long, we only got one of these movies,
- 47:14Speaker 1: like a decade um and in In I think, like
- 47:18Speaker 1: other versions of them, the women were always punished. And
- 47:23Speaker 1: that's one great thing about these films is that the
- 47:25Speaker 1: women aren't punished for doing bad things or forgetting what
- 47:30Speaker 1: they want. I think now we're to place in media
- 47:32Speaker 1: where stories that center women doing bad things, like we
- 47:37Speaker 1: there's like an embarrassment of riches. We have a lot
- 47:39Speaker 1: of them, and the women don't have to be punished
- 47:42Speaker 1: at the end of them. Let us, let let us
- 47:44Speaker 1: learn the lesson, let us take the lesson and keep going. Yeah,
- 47:48Speaker 1: and I've got a new movie about strippers coming out
- 47:50Speaker 1: in the fall. Are you allowed to talk about it? Yeah?
- 47:53Speaker 1: I sure am, Yeah, it's my movie. I can do
- 47:55Speaker 1: whatever I wrote, directed, executive produced, co directed, and started
- 48:00Speaker 1: my first film. It's called Tuesdays with Brian so excited.
- 48:03Speaker 1: I had a character that I did a lot on
- 48:06Speaker 1: Instagram a couple of years ago. So it stars Brian
- 48:09Speaker 1: played by me, and it's a guy going to a
- 48:11Speaker 1: strip club. It's just into regular Tuesday, all of those,
- 48:13Speaker 1: all of that just there's so much fodder in that.
- 48:16Speaker 1: And the whole cast and crew is predominantly people who
- 48:19Speaker 1: are familiar with the industry have worked in it, so
- 48:22Speaker 1: it's told by people who have done the work, and
- 48:26Speaker 1: it's funny, I honestly think. I mean, in the array
- 48:29Speaker 1: of like sex worker movies that I can think of,
- 48:32Speaker 1: I feel like I have yet to see one that
- 48:35Speaker 1: feels like sex workers had like I played a super
- 48:39Speaker 1: meaningful part and like what was be made outside of hustlers.
- 48:41Speaker 1: I also think like Zola, like Zola like that that
- 48:46Speaker 1: kind of ye. So the way they portrayed um sex
- 48:51Speaker 1: work as like I'm just trying to work, just trying
- 48:55Speaker 1: to get the money, and you have to deal with
- 48:57Speaker 1: all of that sex works of like I'm just trying
- 49:04Speaker 1: to get twenty People think that the dancing is what
- 49:07Speaker 1: you get paid for when you're a stripper, right that
- 49:09Speaker 1: it's like the twenty lap dance, Like I had to
- 49:11Speaker 1: spend ten minutes talking to this guy to convince him
- 49:14Speaker 1: to buy one. That's the work. The three and a
- 49:17Speaker 1: half minutes where I'm dancing is where I can just
- 49:19Speaker 1: kind of move my body and breathe and just tune
- 49:21Speaker 1: it out and just do my It is a lot
- 49:23Speaker 1: of it is very anticlimactic, and so much of sex
- 49:25Speaker 1: work and my experience of it was waiting and just
- 49:29Speaker 1: kind of like getting ready being on call. Yeah, getting ready,
- 49:33Speaker 1: I mean ready is fun. Sometimes the waiting is not.
- 49:39Speaker 1: And then I always loved like the aftermath of like Okay,
- 49:43Speaker 1: now I'm going to order a burrito and just vibe.
- 49:47Speaker 1: It really helped me with valuing performance and art as
- 49:52Speaker 1: as work, because now as an artist, I treat my
- 49:55Speaker 1: creativity and my craft and my time and my body
- 49:58Speaker 1: with the same care, because it's really essential that I'm
- 50:00Speaker 1: in good health, that my hands work, that my voice works,
- 50:04Speaker 1: that my body is strong so that I can continue
- 50:06Speaker 1: to do the things that I need to do to
- 50:07Speaker 1: make a living. And that's really what stripping tommy and
- 50:10Speaker 1: that's how my performance as a comedian I know is
- 50:14Speaker 1: enhanced eight thousand times because of my work on stage
- 50:17Speaker 1: as a stripper and my ability to talk to people,
- 50:20Speaker 1: and most importantly, my comfort with asking for money, because
- 50:24Speaker 1: if you want to be an artist, you if you
- 50:26Speaker 1: want to fall in love with art, you have to
- 50:28Speaker 1: fall in love with asking for money all the time.
- 50:30Speaker 1: It's it's it's for I mean, it's I still ask
- 50:33Speaker 1: for money. Every single thing that I do to make
- 50:37Speaker 1: a living is eventually me asking for money. Yeah, occasionally,
- 50:41Speaker 1: occasionally people will offer me money, but it's very much
- 50:45Speaker 1: asking for it all the time. And um, it used
- 50:49Speaker 1: to be revengeful that, you know a man, Haiti. I
- 50:52Speaker 1: started stripping. I'm a survivor. I got into stripping and
- 50:55Speaker 1: I have really hated men, and I felt like that
- 50:58Speaker 1: was a place where I could take my power back
- 51:00Speaker 1: and get paid and be safe. And over many, many,
- 51:05Speaker 1: many years, I've sort of like healed parts of that.
- 51:08Speaker 1: And then money is a lot of things. It's sexy, Yeah,
- 51:12Speaker 1: it is sex. I love cash undeniably. I love them.
- 51:16Speaker 1: I love In First Wives Club, when Goldie Hahn takes
- 51:21Speaker 1: all of her ex husband's possessions and then sells them
- 51:24Speaker 1: at auction and gives him her cut of it, which
- 51:26Speaker 1: is yeah, whatever, Yes, the Lamborghini, the Liechtenstein, Yeah, that
- 51:34Speaker 1: Miller is so good, and that maybe she is Goldie
- 51:37Speaker 1: hand every day. That is literally I took that when
- 51:43Speaker 1: I the first time I got Fillers. I took that
- 51:45Speaker 1: photo with me and said, this is what I want.
- 51:47Speaker 1: I want. But she's in the chair and she's like more.
- 51:52Speaker 1: She is so Goldie. Hawn is one of the greats
- 51:56Speaker 1: of our lifetime, one of the greatest comedic actress is
- 52:00Speaker 1: And I think she is not thought of in that
- 52:02Speaker 1: way enough because I think, like because she is like
- 52:07Speaker 1: so beautiful and so glamorous, but she is a comedic genius.
- 52:11Speaker 1: We were actually just talking recently about I I just
- 52:14Speaker 1: saw a production of Into the Woods in New York,
- 52:16Speaker 1: the Steven Sonheim musical, and there was supposed to be
- 52:20Speaker 1: a movie version of it with her and Share and
- 52:23Speaker 1: Robin Williams. I'm so sad that we were robbed of that,
- 52:26Speaker 1: and I wish she was doing movies doing movies. Wasn't
- 52:29Speaker 1: the last movie she did? That movie with Amy Schumer.
- 52:33Speaker 1: My favorite of hers is The House Sitter. I've never
- 52:36Speaker 1: seen it. Oh my god, what is it about? Oh
- 52:38Speaker 1: my god? Steve Martin. Goldie Han is it's a squatting movie.
- 52:44Speaker 1: She starts squatting in Steve Martin's house and she's so
- 52:48Speaker 1: hot knit she wears her body suits in her jeans
- 52:51Speaker 1: and she's just like being amazing the premises. She meets
- 52:55Speaker 1: Steve Martin at a bar or something and she find
- 52:59Speaker 1: and he and he I don't know, and he has
- 53:01Speaker 1: like a beautiful house. He's an architect, but he's like
- 53:03Speaker 1: not living in it because I think he proposed to
- 53:05Speaker 1: his girlfriend and she was like it was such a
- 53:07Speaker 1: good scene. He builds this beautiful house for her and
- 53:09Speaker 1: he drives up in the converted to this beautiful house
- 53:12Speaker 1: and he's presenting the house and he's like, marry me
- 53:14Speaker 1: and this bitch I love her. She's like no. So
- 53:18Speaker 1: he's so bummed. Right, he goes drinking and he's like drawing,
- 53:21Speaker 1: Oh my god, I really ate so much to so
- 53:22Speaker 1: many parts of this movie. He's like drawing on a
- 53:25Speaker 1: cocktail napkin the house and Goldie Han finds it, and
- 53:28Speaker 1: she finds the house and she just starts living in
- 53:30Speaker 1: it because no one's there, and she's pretending that she's
- 53:32Speaker 1: his new girlfriend, but he doesn't know because he's not there.
- 53:36Speaker 1: It's such a good movie. It's such an inspiration. And
- 53:39Speaker 1: three of them are like the are great, they're amazing actresses.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Yan Keene is an amazing way. She's still she really
- 53:48Speaker 1: has showed kind of how much she sucks. But that year,
- 53:52Speaker 1: I'm sorry, this is this anatirist is probably told to death.
- 53:55Speaker 1: But like Bet the fact that Bett used to like
- 53:58Speaker 1: singing like gay bath houses, Like did you know that
- 54:02Speaker 1: she used to like she like used to do before
- 54:04Speaker 1: she was like famous famous, Her agent will book her
- 54:07Speaker 1: for like three dollars to like sing songs at like
- 54:10Speaker 1: gay bathhouses where there was like you know, back when
- 54:14Speaker 1: like you know, gay sex was criminalized. This is where
- 54:16Speaker 1: they were the origin. I love it. I love the
- 54:20Speaker 1: money you get to do weird Ship because it's a
- 54:23Speaker 1: gig my idea. A gig is a gig and they
- 54:26Speaker 1: are not all great, but they're all great stories. Could
- 54:29Speaker 1: you imagine Bette Midler performing to a room full of
- 54:31Speaker 1: wi yes, yes, yes, I I'm sure there's plenty of
- 54:38Speaker 1: gay men who still have sex while Bette Midler is
- 54:42Speaker 1: in the room in some way or another. Well, in
- 54:45Speaker 1: the Politician season two, there's so many different ways to
- 54:49Speaker 1: put on a show and share a story and be
- 54:51Speaker 1: a great entertainer. And these are the stories we talked
- 54:53Speaker 1: about thirty years later. You can put on a show
- 54:57Speaker 1: at your you know, women's shelter at the end of
- 55:00Speaker 1: the opening while no one is there. Yes, because it
- 55:06Speaker 1: just feels so good to do it. I'm just so
- 55:08Speaker 1: happy that that film had the self awareness to put
- 55:11Speaker 1: that scene at the end of them doing a number. Yeah,
- 55:15Speaker 1: it's going to end in a dance finale. It has
- 55:18Speaker 1: to end in the most celebratory way. Yes, I feel
- 55:24Speaker 1: like that movie is now like a beloved like gay film.
- 55:28Speaker 1: I think it's a beloved like lesbian film. I think
- 55:31Speaker 1: a lot of trans people love this film. And I
- 55:33Speaker 1: think that, like a lot of things that had mass
- 55:36Speaker 1: appeal when it came out in the nineties, have like
- 55:39Speaker 1: a cruden value to where we are now. And I
- 55:41Speaker 1: think like revenge and like powerful women like getting that
- 55:44Speaker 1: revenge to kind of suck the patriarchy. Like, it's amazing
- 55:48Speaker 1: how much that message has like just become even more
- 55:52Speaker 1: kind of resident also passes the back tol test because
- 55:54Speaker 1: like they start off talking about their husbands and then
- 55:57Speaker 1: the real drama becomes their relation chips with each other.
- 56:02Speaker 1: You know, there's the scene where she throws the golden globe.
- 56:07Speaker 1: I think when they all fight and when Goldie Hans
- 56:10Speaker 1: says one of her best lines ever, I have feelings.
- 56:13Speaker 1: I'm an actress. I have, all of them have. And
- 56:17Speaker 1: also you know, just like the the zane nous of it,
- 56:21Speaker 1: when they're in the scaffold, the window washing thing, and
- 56:25Speaker 1: it falls like that. They just don't make movies like
- 56:29Speaker 1: this anymore. They don't, They literally don't. But we can't. Well,
- 56:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna so I'm I'm moving into like much more
- 56:35Speaker 1: serious filmmaking. So rest assured, I'm going to be making
- 56:38Speaker 1: way more buddy comedies. All the rich people listening. If
- 56:44Speaker 1: you want to finance Queer, Fast and the Furious, you
