- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is a Monday.
- 0:16It is the 8th of January and you have joined me for another day
- 0:21in the glorious word of our glorious God in this chapter.
- 0:25A day podcast so good that you could find some time in your
- 0:30day. I don't know if like me, you are
- 0:33heading back into normal life to normal what is not.
- 0:36You are heading back into life as it was before the Christmas
- 0:39break. If you're with me, friend,
- 0:42welcome back to normality. But here we are, just for a
- 0:47moment, before normality takes over, we are going to do the
- 0:51other thing, the other thing which is part of our normal
- 0:53rhythm, which is read a chapter of God's word together.
- 0:56And this is the day when when we hear that actually God hears his
- 1:02people. This week is all about the
- 1:05people saying we want a king and God saying I don't want you to
- 1:08be like the other nations, I want to be your king, and the
- 1:11people saying no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:12We just want a king and God complying.
- 1:15And this week we will hear all about this journey with the
- 1:19people, and then their first king, and then him, leading into
- 1:24the early part of his reign, which was actually quite
- 1:26successful before it all turned to pot.
- 1:29But we will get to that in due course.
- 1:31Today we hear Israel tell God that they actually want a king.
- 1:37So let us put down the world that awaits us and read God's
- 1:42word together, reading First Samuel, chapter 8.
- 1:55As Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons to be judges over
- 2:00Israel. Joel and Abijah, his oldest
- 2:03sons, held court in Beersheba, but they were not like their
- 2:07father, for they were greedy for money.
- 2:10They accepted bribes and perverted justice.
- 2:14Finally, all the elders of Israel met at Rama to discuss
- 2:18the matter with Samuel. Look, they told him You are now
- 2:22old and your sons are not like you.
- 2:26Give us a king to judge us, like all the other nations have.
- 2:30Samuel was displeased with their request and went to the Lord for
- 2:34guidance. Do everything they say to you,
- 2:38the Lord replied. For they are rejecting me, not
- 2:41you. They don't want me to be like
- 2:44their king any longer. Ever since I brought them out of
- 2:48Egypt, they have continually abandoned me and followed other
- 2:52gods. And now they are giving you the
- 2:55same treatment. Do as they ask, but solemnly
- 3:00warn them about the way a king will reign over them.
- 3:04So Samuel passed on the Lord's warning to the people who are
- 3:07asking for a king. This is how a king will reign
- 3:10over you, Samuel said. The king will draft your sons
- 3:15and assign them to his Chariots and his charioteers, making them
- 3:19run before his Chariots. Some will be generals and
- 3:23captains in his army, Some will be forced to plow in his fields
- 3:27and harvest his crops, and some will make his weapons and
- 3:31chariot equipment. The king will take your
- 3:34daughters from you and force them to cook and bake and make
- 3:38perfumes for him. He will take the best of your
- 3:41fields and vineyards and olive Groves, and give them to his own
- 3:45officials. He will take a tenth of your
- 3:48grain and your grape harvest and distribute it among his officers
- 3:53and attendants. He will take your male and
- 3:56female slaves and demand the finest of your cattle and
- 4:00donkeys for his use. He will demand a tenth of your
- 4:04flocks, and you will be his slaves.
- 4:08When that day comes, you will beg for relief from this king
- 4:12you are demanding, but then the Lord will not help you.
- 4:16But the people refuse to listen to Samuel's warning.
- 4:20Even so, we still want a king, they said.
- 4:24We want to be like the nations around us.
- 4:27Our king will judge us and lead us into battle.
- 4:31So Samuel repeated to the Lord what the people had said, and
- 4:35the Lord replied, do as they say and give them a king.
- 4:42Then Samuel agreed and sent the people home.
- 4:55Ah, Lord, it so often feels like we know what's best.
- 4:59We know what is the best thing for us, and we want to see that
- 5:03happen. But you see far into the future,
- 5:08and you see the way things will unravel and unfold, and you love
- 5:13us and guide us away from those disasters.
- 5:18And sometimes we persist, and you allow us to do that in your
- 5:22grace, knowing that in the fullness of time we will be LED
- 5:26back to you. You are magnanimous and wise and
- 5:33all seeing and almighty, and we just praise you, our God.
- 5:37And we pray that you would give us some of your wisdom, that we
- 5:41would have the wisdom to listen to you and to heed your warnings
- 5:46as we read them in Scripture and feel Your Spirit prompting us.
- 5:52Thank you that you take an active part in our lives,
- 5:55leading us always back to you, because for a reason that is
- 6:01beyond us, you want to be with us.
- 6:03And so we thank you and we praise you, and we pray all
- 6:08these things in the name of Jesus.
- 6:11Amen.
