Transcript
- 0:13Twenty four ninety five.
- 0:15That's the average hourly pay for aerospace work in Oklahoma City,
- 0:18according to ZipRecruiter data.
- 0:20And I keep picturing someone stuck at, say, sixteen an hour,
- 0:23scrolling right past that number and thinking, yeah, that's for engineers.
- 0:28Which is the assumption.
- 0:29Defense manufacturing means a degree.
- 0:31Right.
- 0:32Um, and the same ZipRecruiter data says most aerospace workers there land between
- 0:37seventeen twenty one and twenty eight sixty one an hour.
- 0:40So the, the floor isn't the basement.
- 0:42Okay, so what does the door actually look like?
- 0:45Last time we were in distribution warehouses.
- 0:47This is the next rung, southwest OKC.
- 0:50Kratos Unmanned Aerial Systems, zip code seven three one seven nine.
- 0:54The listing we're working from wants Aircraft Assemblers and Composite Assemblers,
- 0:58level one.
- 0:59High school diploma, basic tape measure skills, aptitude with hand tools and you're
- 1:03assembling jet powered unmanned aircraft.
- 1:07Jet powered.
- 1:08With a tape measure.
- 1:10I know.
- 1:11I had the same face.
- 1:12The schedule is what caught me.
- 1:15The Kratos posting says swing shift is 3:00 PM to 1:30 AM, Monday through Thursday.
- 1:20Hold on, that's, uh, ten and a half hours a day.
- 1:24Four days.
- 1:25Forty two a week, by my math.
- 1:27Your math holds.
- 1:28And the trade is, no Friday commute, so gas money stays in the tank,
- 1:33and you get three days in a row.
- 1:35Childcare, sleep, a side gig.
- 1:39But one thirty in the morning.
- 1:41I did mornings on the radio for years, and a weird body clock is,
- 1:45it's not nothing.
- 1:46Nights aren't free just because Fridays are.
- 1:49Fair.
- 1:50It's a trade, not a gift.
- 1:52Now here's the other thing about reading job boards.
- 1:55They show you the hourly wage and nothing else.
- 1:58Which is the number I'd look at.
- 2:00Sure.
- 2:00But the City of Oklahoma City's benefits page says its total compensation package,
- 2:05benefits and retirement, averages about twenty two thousand dollars per employee on
- 2:11top of your wages.
- 2:13Spread that over a full time year, roughly two thousand hours,
- 2:16and that's around eleven dollars an hour.
- 2:19My rough math, so don't quote me to the penny.
- 2:22Wait, so a city job posting with a lower wage could beat a higher one once you count
- 2:28the healthcare and retirement.
- 2:30That's the point.
- 2:31The city also reimburses tuition for full time employees on most pay plans,
- 2:36up to twelve fifty per semester.
- 2:38You apply at four twenty West Main Street or through okc dot gov slash careers.
- 2:43Okay, so say you get in the door.
- 2:46How do you climb past entry level without drowning in student loans?
- 2:50Moore Norman Technology Center.
- 2:52Franklin Road campus.
- 2:54Their admissions page lists tuition at two dollars and fifty cents per academic
- 2:59clock hour for in district students, and three dollars for out of district.
- 3:03Two fifty.
- 3:05Per hour.
- 3:06That's, that's a vending machine snack.
- 3:10Do the hypothetical.
- 3:11A program that ran a thousand clock hours would be twenty five hundred dollars in
- 3:15tuition.
- 3:16Hypothetical, so check the real program hours.
- 3:20The outline we're working from points to CNC Machining and Electrical Trades,
- 3:25aiming at twenty four to thirty dollars an hour.
- 3:28And that range is the target, not a promise.
- 3:31Right.
- 3:32Also, for eligible Native students, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation's NACTEP program
- 3:37is described as offering full tuition sponsorship and living stipends.
- 3:42Kourtney Jones manages it, four oh five, eight seven eight,
- 3:45three eight five four.
- 3:47Confirm eligibility with her.
- 3:49Alright, my turn.
- 3:50Cash flow while you're retraining.
- 3:53Thunder season, Paycom Center, one Myriad Gardens.
- 3:57The range we're working from says event attendants and guest crew work four to six
- 4:02hour evening shifts at fifteen to eighteen an hour.
- 4:06And that fits with the Kratos schedule how?
- 4:08Um, Kratos is Monday to Thursday, so weekends are open.
- 4:12Two or three shifts is about a hundred fifty to two fifty dollars.
- 4:16But, uh, weeknight home games would collide with a swing shift,
- 4:20so pick your nights.
- 4:21And confirm the pay with the venue.
- 4:23Numbers move.
- 4:24Yeah.
- 4:25Now the hard one.
- 4:27What if the car dies or the medical bill lands, and the rent is due Friday?
- 4:32A Heartline 211 listing describes NSO's Stay Housed program as providing eviction
- 4:39prevention services and legal advocacy for renters experiencing sudden financial
- 4:44crisis, such as medical bills or emergency car repair.
- 4:49The Tenant Advocacy Center is at thirteen eighteen Linwood Boulevard,
- 4:54phone four oh five, nine eight four, four two oh two.
- 4:59So call before it's a court date, not after.
- 5:02That's the idea.
- 5:03And here's the day one challenge.
- 5:06Before 5:00 PM today, do one thing.
- 5:09Submit an online profile on the Kratos Defense careers page,
- 5:13or call the Moore Norman Bursar at four oh five, eight zero one,
- 5:18five zero nine zero and ask about course start dates.
- 5:21One thing.
- 5:22Not a whole life plan.
- 5:26I can do a phone call.
- 5:28Then go do it.
- 5:29That's the show.
