Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Everybody, Welcome to parents Talk. I am Franci Juliene, otherwise
- 0:13Speaker 1: known as Princess Francie, who happens to be my inner
- 0:17Speaker 1: child and the main character of my children's book Sparkle
- 0:23Speaker 1: Feathers and Princess Franci the Magic Library. And you might
- 0:28Speaker 1: think my book is all about children reading in a library,
- 0:33Speaker 1: maybe just a little bit. It's really about meditation. Your
- 0:39Speaker 1: brain is the library, and we clean up that library,
- 0:42Speaker 1: make it all nice and neat when we teach children
- 0:46Speaker 1: how to meditate. I have a guest with me today.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Holly Filary is a mother of a swarmy seven year
- 0:54Speaker 1: old boy, and she's a children's book author who owns schools. So, Hollie,
- 1:02Speaker 1: I would love for you to give us a little
- 1:07Speaker 1: introduction about your book while I share on the screen
- 1:12Speaker 1: your color.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13Speaker 3: So, my book is called Your Homeschool Art, and it
- 1:18Speaker 3: shows the day in the life of Joey, my seven
- 1:23Speaker 3: year old, his homeschool day, and it shows that we're
- 1:28Speaker 3: not we're not weird. We do school like everybody else.
- 1:34Speaker 3: We are at the table doing bookwork, but we're also
- 1:38Speaker 3: playing outside and we go on all sorts of field
- 1:40Speaker 3: trips and we have all sorts of extra clubs and activities.
- 1:45Speaker 3: It breaks. It shows the stereotype that we're not weird.
- 1:51Speaker 3: We just do school different, not weird, just different.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I love that because that's like the basis for my
- 1:58Speaker 1: book is line's different. We need to be comfortable with
- 2:02Speaker 1: what makes us different.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Right exactly, it's it's not weird, we just do things
- 2:08Speaker 3: different than your typical school systems.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And what made you want to write this book?
- 2:15Speaker 2: So it we were actually at the lake and it
- 2:22Speaker 2: was kind of right after school had started and everyone's like, oh,
- 2:26Speaker 2: you don't have school today, and my son was like, no,
- 2:28Speaker 2: I'm homeschooled.
- 2:30Speaker 3: And it just got me thinking. There are a ton
- 2:33Speaker 3: of books for adults who are homeschooling, and there are
- 2:38Speaker 3: some for kids, but there's not enough children's books about
- 2:42Speaker 3: homeschooling for the kids to reassure them that it's okay,
- 2:46Speaker 3: it's pretty much the norm anymore. And it's it's not weird,
- 2:52Speaker 3: it's just it's awesome.
- 2:55Speaker 1: It sounds awesome. So why did you choose home schooling.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I know that you had an option between public school
- 3:04Speaker 1: or homeschooling. What made you choose it?
- 3:06Speaker 3: When my son was kindergarten age we actually lived in
- 3:11Speaker 3: the worst school district for our state. The school system
- 3:16Speaker 3: was not great, and it just it wasn't safe, and
- 3:19Speaker 3: there was just a lot of issues in the school
- 3:21Speaker 3: system at that time and there still are, but they
- 3:24Speaker 3: just was really bad at that particular time. And someone
- 3:28Speaker 3: mentioned to me about homeschooling, and I thought, surely I
- 3:31Speaker 3: can teach kindergarten at the very least. And once we started,
- 3:36Speaker 3: I just I loved it and I was learning with him,
- 3:39Speaker 3: watching him learn and grow, and I didn't want to stop.
- 3:42Speaker 3: And we're still doing it several years later.
- 3:45Speaker 1: It just sounds like so much fun. But now, never
- 3:51Speaker 1: having been involved with homeschooling, I have a friend who
- 3:54Speaker 1: does it, so I hear some of her stories. I
- 3:57Speaker 1: have a question for you, how do you inspire your
- 4:01Speaker 1: son to go past the curriculum. I know you have
- 4:04Speaker 1: the guidelines of what your state tells you you have
- 4:08Speaker 1: to teach, but how do you inspire your son to
- 4:11Speaker 1: really dig deeply into the subjects that matter to him.
- 4:16Speaker 3: So we were at a classical library about comic books
- 4:24Speaker 3: and how to write them and how to draw them,
- 4:27Speaker 3: and my son it kind of sparked a little interest,
- 4:29Speaker 3: I noticed, and we got and he wanted to check
- 4:32Speaker 3: out a comic book, and so he checked one out
- 4:35Speaker 3: from the library and he got home and he was
- 4:37Speaker 3: reading it. He goes, this is really cool, and I
- 4:40Speaker 3: found a little template online that it's like a kind
- 4:47Speaker 3: of has the background of a comic strip, and you
- 4:49Speaker 3: just fill it in what you want. And all day
- 4:52Speaker 3: he spent drawing the comic book character in the book
- 4:55Speaker 3: he was reading and making up his own stories and
- 4:57Speaker 3: diving deeper into it. And when he was doing that,
- 5:01Speaker 3: he was learning about art and language, about how comic
- 5:05Speaker 3: books are and just all sorts of stuff. And I
- 5:08Speaker 3: didn't shove it, you know. I didn't give him a like,
- 5:11Speaker 3: here do this. It was oh, look, here's something that
- 5:13Speaker 3: might interest you. I'll leave it here if you want
- 5:15Speaker 3: to do it. And he just latched onto it. And
- 5:17Speaker 3: we've done that with so many different subjects machines. Right now,
- 5:22Speaker 3: we're learning about Oxa Lottels, which are really popular. It's
- 5:25Speaker 3: a little salamander from Mexico that is really cute and interesting.
- 5:30Speaker 3: But he just if he hooks on, if I see
- 5:33Speaker 3: a little spark, I kind of leave stuff out for
- 5:37Speaker 3: him and I'm like, oh, look, here's a cool video
- 5:39Speaker 3: and see if he latches on and see how deep
- 5:41Speaker 3: he wants to go, and we just go down the
- 5:44Speaker 3: rabbit hole. As most people say.
- 5:47Speaker 1: That just really sparked something in me because I have
- 5:52Speaker 1: the online Confidence Club for kids, and my free newsletter
- 5:57Speaker 1: starts out with a little activity for the kids to
- 6:01Speaker 1: design their own superhero.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Oh nice, Yeah, that's exactly pretty much exactly what he
- 6:06Speaker 3: was doing. He just total rabbit hole on that one.
- 6:10Speaker 3: He's still still interested. Yay.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So if you are watching this, I am going to
- 6:15Speaker 1: drop the link and where you could get my newsletter
- 6:18Speaker 1: and get this activity for your kids and see how
- 6:22Speaker 1: you could spark their imagination and let them design their
- 6:26Speaker 1: own superhero and see what happens.
- 6:32Speaker 3: You never know what's going to happen. Especially with the
- 6:35Speaker 3: little kids that are made imagination is amazing. If you
- 6:38Speaker 3: just let them imagine, you never know what they're going
- 6:41Speaker 3: to come up with.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Well, and you know what, that's true for adults too.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I never ever imagine I'd be a children's book author.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I was an electrician.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Hi never in a million years like this happened. It
- 6:56Speaker 3: just was a little idea and I just it wouldn't
- 6:59Speaker 3: go away. It would not go away until I did it,
- 7:02Speaker 3: and then it just took off.
- 7:05Speaker 1: So if you're listening to this and you ever thought
- 7:08Speaker 1: about being a children book author, just take a little
- 7:12Speaker 1: comment below and let me know and we could talk.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yep, absolutely, just just do it. It's so much fun.
- 7:21Speaker 3: It's so much fun.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Is there something last comment? You want to make? Something
- 7:28Speaker 1: to leave the audience? Of course, we also want to
- 7:32Speaker 1: know how could they find you on Instagram? And how
- 7:35Speaker 1: can they get your book?
- 7:37Speaker 3: So on Instagram it's Freedom Farm Life because we are
- 7:42Speaker 3: on a twelve acre farm. And then my book is
- 7:45Speaker 3: on Amazon it's called Your Homeschool. I bet that's weird.
- 7:49Speaker 3: If you also look up my name Holly Joy Fillery,
- 7:52Speaker 3: you'll be able to find it that way as well
- 7:54Speaker 3: on Amazon, and I'll give you the link so you
- 7:57Speaker 3: can host.
- 7:57Speaker 1: It as well. And I definitely want to invite you
- 8:01Speaker 1: back to talk about your farm. Because in the Confidence
- 8:04Speaker 1: Club for Kids, we show little videos of different things
- 8:08Speaker 1: the kids might like to spark that interest in imagination.
- 8:12Speaker 3: And then oh yeah, I got so many little videos
- 8:15Speaker 3: of playing in the creek or with the chickens or
- 8:18Speaker 3: on the tires. I got tons of stuff.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Oh gosh, that well, we'll definitely have you back on everybody.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Please go to Amazon check out her book, and please
- 8:32Speaker 1: this is a public service announcement for all authors. We
- 8:36Speaker 1: love reviews. Please review books.
- 8:40Speaker 2: So excited.
- 8:41Speaker 3: I check Amazon several times a day, and anytime my
- 8:43Speaker 3: review jumps up one, I have to go and read
- 8:45Speaker 3: it because it's so exciting to see.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Yes, and if you leave a review with your name
- 8:51Speaker 1: on it, I will also make you famous on Facebook.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Absolutely.
